- 0:00Welcome back, men. This is Pastor Justin Dean with
- 0:02the Sacred Men YouTube channel. And I have been getting quite a
- 0:06few videos sent to me lately of people kind of revealing that
- 0:12their debt, their consumer debt, their personal debt.
- 0:16And that's how I'm going to start this video.
- 0:18I'm going to start with a little bit of a reaction video, one of
- 0:20these videos that was sent to me and then we're going to talk
- 0:23about it. All right, so let's let's go.
- 0:24Let's see what we got. We didn't have a crazy
- 0:27lifestyle, but normal life still turned into $216,000 of debt.
- 0:32And honestly, it happened in ways that felt pretty normal.
- 0:36Whoa. Normal life, normal lifestyle
- 0:44turned into $216,000 worth of debt.
- 0:51First, my first response is Ouch.
- 0:54My second response is if that's normal, then maybe we should not
- 1:00be normal. And my third response is if this
- 1:03is your wife, I'm sorry. OK, I'm sorry.
- 1:06And honestly, it happened in ways that felt pretty normal.
- 1:10It started with student loans. Started with student loans.
- 1:15Most of the time it does these days.
- 1:16I, I counsel a lot of people get married and many times they're
- 1:20having 100,000, even $200,000 in debt for student loans.
- 1:27Understandable. If you're going to be a doctor,
- 1:30If you're not going to be a doctor and you're not making a
- 1:32quarter million or more a year, then that is insane and you
- 1:36should be very wary of doing something like that.
- 1:40Then two car payments. We're already in student loan
- 1:47debt. She doesn't say how much and
- 1:51we're going to choose to finance 2 vehicles now this is just a
- 1:57dumb decision right off the bat. Whatever she's going to say
- 2:00next. This is a dumb decision to
- 2:01finance 2 vehicles. You can buy vehicles only she
- 2:07doesn't say how much she finances them, but she's showing
- 2:09a picture and they don't look very old, right?
- 2:14So but you can get a freaking car off of Facebook marketplace.
- 2:17You can drive a 4 or $5000 car to get you through to save money
- 2:23to pay cash for a better vehicle down the road.
- 2:27Why finance? You're already in a lot of debt.
- 2:29Why finance a car? It's a depreciating asset.
- 2:33It's a horrible investment. It's a waste of money.
- 2:37With the interest payments on this, by the time you're paying
- 2:39off the debt, more than likely it's going to be worth less
- 2:43than, well, it's, it's going to be worth almost nothing by the
- 2:47time you pay it off and you're going to pay a lot more for the
- 2:50car than you actually thought you're going to pay for the car.
- 2:53Financing, furniture, TV's and little things.
- 2:56We needed to set up life. OK, financing, furniture, TV's
- 3:11and little things we needed to set up life.
- 3:16None of those things are needs. Those are all wants.
- 3:21My wife and I, when we first got married, all of our furniture we
- 3:24found for free. I remember very clearly college
- 3:30going out of business and they were, they were giving away all
- 3:35of their furniture. And so, you know, those pleather
- 3:39chairs and all that kind of stuff that you see in colleges.
- 3:41And we went and picked them up, bunch of them up.
- 3:43My couch was from there, my chairs were from there.
- 3:46We had a little table. Everything we got was free, you
- 3:49know, and you, you don't need to finance furniture.
- 3:53That's a horrible decision. And TVSTVS are like $100 at
- 3:58Walmart. Why in the world would you need
- 4:01to finance ATV? And ATV of course is not a need
- 4:05as well. And it these are depreciating
- 4:07assets, ATV is going to be worth almost nothing a year from now
- 4:13and you're probably still paying on it.
- 4:16And little things we needed to set up life.
- 4:18These are not needs. These are wants.
- 4:21These are foolish decisions. These are getting something in
- 4:24the moment because I want it. I want to look rich.
- 4:27I want to look successful. I want to look like I have it
- 4:30all together and I don't actually want to be rich.
- 4:32And there's a big difference. The proverbs talk about that.
- 4:35There's a guy who wants to look rich and, and so he dresses the
- 4:38part, he buys all the things, but in actuality, he's poor.
- 4:42And there's another guy who's wise with his money, and he
- 4:45might look poor on the outside. He might drive, you know, a 1015
- 4:49year old car, right? He might not have the latest
- 4:51fashion. He might not have a house that
- 4:54looks like Joanna Gaines decorated it or a closet that
- 4:58looks like some kind of influencer, right?
- 5:01He might not have all that, but he might be rich all right.
- 5:04Keep going. And a few credit cards we meant
- 5:06to pay down. A few credit cards we meant to
- 5:10pay down. Yeah, sure, I'm going to pay for
- 5:13it. Did you have a budget right?
- 5:15Did you have a budget? Did you know when you're going
- 5:17to pay this down? Did you know how long it was
- 5:18going to take? Credit cards are a scam if
- 5:21you're not a disciplined person. None of it felt extreme at the
- 5:24time, but one day we added everything up.
- 5:29None of this felt extreme. It felt normal, Yeah.
- 5:33It's normal for a consumeristic foolish society.
- 5:36It's normal for people who think debt is normal.
- 5:40And then she adds it up and it's $216,000 now.
- 5:46It's funny to me, 100,000 not extreme 125,000 not extreme
- 5:52175,000 Nah, no, we're good, we're good, 216,000 and now we
- 6:00need to do something. You needed to do something
- 6:04$200,000 ago right now. I know I've seen worse ones than
- 6:09these, right? You've sent me, I, I've, I've
- 6:11been sent videos guys, $1,000,000 in debt.
- 6:15And it's one thing if you're $1,000,000 in debt and you own a
- 6:17bunch of rental properties and those are one appreciating
- 6:20assets and they're also cash generating assets.
- 6:23But when you have consumer credit card debt that is like
- 6:27being thrown into the ocean with a 10 LB weight or a 20 LB weight
- 6:31or a 216,000 LB weight around your ankle.
- 6:36It is going to be incredibly difficult to get out of this
- 6:39kind of debt, but you can do it. And I've seen people who have
- 6:43done it. And so today on this video at
- 6:46Sacred Men, we're going to talk about how to treat debt, how to
- 6:49stay out of debt, how to get out of debt, what debt debt is from
- 6:53a biblical perspective, how we should look at it, how we should
- 6:56think about it, because I want you to be able to live free
- 7:00financially. All right, so let's get into the
- 7:02video. All right, dudes, thanks for
- 7:04sticking with me. I want you to do something right
- 7:07now. I want you to name the number,
- 7:14your total debt, every credit card, every car loan, every
- 7:19personal loan, every line of credit.
- 7:22Add it all up. What's your number Now, Most men
- 7:27that I know have never done that.
- 7:31I asked them. They know the minimum payments,
- 7:34they know roughly what they owe on one or two accounts.
- 7:38I don't know, it's around 15K or something like that, right?
- 7:41But they've never actually sat down, stared at the full number
- 7:46and let it land because that number can be terrifying.
- 7:52And shame tells us that if we don't actually look at it, then
- 7:57it's just it's not as real, but it is real and it's costing you
- 8:03more than money. See, debt, consumer debt cost
- 8:09you sleep. It cost you peace in your
- 8:12marriage. It cost you the freedom to say
- 8:15yes to God when He asks you to do something that requires
- 8:18financial risk. It cost you the ability to be
- 8:22generous. It cost you options.
- 8:26Debt does not just take your money.
- 8:29It steals your hope and it robs you of your future.
- 8:33Well, welcome back to Sacred men.
- 8:35Today we're going to be talking about something that affects the
- 8:37majority of men sitting in church across America.
- 8:42Debt, consumer debt in America is now over 17 trillion.
- 8:48I know that really doesn't register.
- 8:50That's, that's a big number. And we're thinking about a whole
- 8:51country, but the average household is carrying roughly
- 8:56$21,000 in non mortgage debt alone.
- 9:01And in Christian households the numbers are not that much
- 9:04different. The church has largely failed to
- 9:08address this issue head on and men are suffering in silence
- 9:12because of it. So that's why I want to address
- 9:15it today. Now, here's what I want you to
- 9:17hear above everything else I'm going to say in this video.
- 9:20Hear this. Getting out of debt is not just
- 9:24a good financial goal, it's a spiritual duty.
- 9:29Hear that? It's a spiritual duty.
- 9:32You owe it to God. You owe it to yourself.
- 9:34You owe it to your family or your future family.
- 9:38It's an act of obedience. It's an act of faith, it's an
- 9:41act of worship. And God's Word has a lot to say
- 9:44about it. Well, today we're going to look
- 9:45at 3 biblical principles that if you actually apply them, will
- 9:49change the trajectory of your financial life. 3 foundational
- 9:53truths from Scripture that will reframe how you see debt, how
- 9:57you fight it, and how you get free to live free.
- 10:01Let's go principle number one. You have to confront the enemy.
- 10:07You cannot fight what you will not face.
- 10:11Every great military campaign in history began the same way with
- 10:14intelligence. Before a general could go plan
- 10:18an offensive, he had to understand the terrain.
- 10:21He had to know the enemy's positions.
- 10:23He had to count his own forces honestly, and theirs if he can.
- 10:27No general in his right mind marches his army into battle
- 10:32without proper intelligence. But that's exactly what most men
- 10:36do when they approach their debt.
- 10:38They have their eyes closed, their head down.
- 10:40They're paying the minimum payments and hoping it's going
- 10:42to get better somehow, hoping they're going to hit the lottery
- 10:45or get rich quick. It's just probably not going to
- 10:48happen. Well, God's word tells us to do
- 10:50something different. Listen to this proverb.
- 10:52It sounds like it's about farming.
- 10:54But stay with me, because there's a principle buried in
- 10:57there that's profoundly relevant to your financial life right
- 10:59now. Proverbs 2723 through 24 Know
- 11:03well the condition of your flocks and give attention to
- 11:08your herds. For riches do not last forever.
- 11:11And does a crown endure to all generations that principle
- 11:16there? Listen.
- 11:16Know well the condition of your flocks in the ancient world.
- 11:21Your flocks or your wealth. That's your financial security.
- 11:25That's your asset base. And God's saying something here
- 11:28through Solomon. He's saying pay attention to
- 11:31them. Know your numbers.
- 11:34Do not be passive about the state of what has been entrusted
- 11:38to you. So a man who does not know the
- 11:41condition of his flock will be more prone to lose his flock.
- 11:47And then Jesus says this in the middle of one of his famous
- 11:51teachings on counting the cost of discipleship.
- 11:53He says in Luke 1428 through 30, For which of you desiring to
- 11:59build a tower does not first sit down and count the cost, whether
- 12:04he is enough to complete it. Otherwise, when he's laid a
- 12:07foundation and is not able to finish, all who see it begin to
- 12:11mock him, saying this man began to build and was not able to
- 12:15finish. Why couldn't he finish?
- 12:17Why wasn't he able to build? Because he didn't sit down and
- 12:20caught. Count the cost.
- 12:23Counting the cost. That is wisdom.
- 12:27That's how a man is meant to operate.
- 12:30Not with his head in the sand, not with blind hope, not with a
- 12:33vague sense that he's going to work on it sometime in the
- 12:35future. A man sits down, counts the
- 12:38cost, counts his debts, adds them all up, faces the truth,
- 12:43even when the truth is painful to look at.
- 12:47And here's what the Apostle Paul says about debt.
- 12:49Owe no one anything except to love one another, for the one
- 12:54who loves another has fulfilled the law, owe no one anything.
- 12:59Now scholars debate the full scope of this verse.
- 13:01Does it mean you can never have a mortgage?
- 13:02No, I don't think so. Most scholars say no.
- 13:05Buying a home is an appreciating asset.
- 13:08And so that's not Paul's point here.
- 13:12There's the difference between good debt and bad debt.
- 13:15You know, you can buy a business and go in debt for that
- 13:17business, but that if that is a is a cash generating asset,
- 13:22that's probably a good debt, right?
- 13:23If it's an appreciating asset, it's probably a good debt.
- 13:26But the truth of this scripture is really crystal clear.
- 13:31Debt is not normal. Debt is not to meant meant to be
- 13:36the normal default condition of a man of God.
- 13:40It's something to be escaped from, not accommodated.
- 13:44It's something to get out of, not managed forever and left to
- 13:48your children to pay off. We have got to begin to see debt
- 13:53as an actual enemy. So here's what confronting the
- 13:57enemy looks like in practice. If you want to get out of debt,
- 14:01sit down with a piece of paper or a spreadsheet and list every
- 14:05single debt you owe. Write down the name of the
- 14:09creditor, the total balance, the minimum payment, the interest
- 14:13rate. Don't estimate.
- 14:14Go look at the actual statements, then write the total
- 14:17at the bottom. And then this is the part many
- 14:21men want to skip. Sit with that number.
- 14:25Look at it, think about it, meditate on it, then bring it
- 14:30before God. Pray over it.
- 14:34Say Lord, this is the hole I'm in.
- 14:37I've put myself in this hole. I'm accountable.
- 14:39I'm responsible for this hole. I'm not hiding it from myself or
- 14:43trying to hide it from you any longer.
- 14:46Help me fight to get my way out, right?
- 14:51You cannot kill what you will not name.
- 14:54Name the debt. Face the number.
- 14:57Own your battle. Now, there's something that
- 15:00happens in a man when he stops hiding and starts facing his
- 15:05enemy, starts facing his fears. The shame actually loses some of
- 15:09its power because you've named it, you've said it, and you're
- 15:12like, I'm set against this thing.
- 15:14This is an enemy, this is a foe, and I'm going to fight it now.
- 15:22You know what you owe now, right?
- 15:23So number one, name it, write it down, figure it out.
- 15:29Shame thrives in the dark. And now you've turned on the
- 15:33light. You've brought this enemy out
- 15:35into the light. Here's the second principle.
- 15:37Principle #2 write out a plan and then work the plan.
- 15:41Write out a plan and then work the plan.
- 15:44Strategy is not optional, right? It's obedience.
- 15:48We must be strategic. We must have a plan.
- 15:51So you face the number. You know what you owe.
- 15:54Now the enemy's visible good. Because Step 2 is where we get
- 15:58tactical. One of the things I love most
- 16:01about the Bible is that it's not just deeply spiritual, it's also
- 16:04deeply practical. Over and over again, Scripture
- 16:08connects deep theology to concrete, everyday action, and
- 16:13nowhere is that more true than when it comes to dealing with
- 16:15money. Proverbs 21 five says this.
- 16:18The plans of the diligent lead surely to abundance, but
- 16:24everyone who is hasty comes only to poverty.
- 16:27Hear that The plans of the diligent, not the intentions or
- 16:31the hopes or the dreams or the wishes of the diligent.
- 16:36No, the plans. A plan is specific.
- 16:39A plan is tactical. A plan has steps.
- 16:43A plan has a timeline. A plan has a goal.
- 16:47A plan can be followed and measured and adjusted on the fly
- 16:51as needed. And God connects that kind of
- 16:54planning directly to future abundance.
- 16:57If you plan well, the the plans of the diligent lead surely to
- 17:03abundance. Now contrast that with being
- 17:07hasty. Flying by the seat of your
- 17:09pants. The hasty person is reactive.
- 17:13He deals with debt by ignoring it until a collection call
- 17:17comes, then panicking and trying to make a minimum payment, then
- 17:20forgetting about it again until next month.
- 17:23That cycle does not lead to freedom, it leads to poverty,
- 17:27both financial and spiritual poverty.
- 17:30God said a beautiful thing to Habakkuk as the prophet was
- 17:33overwhelmed by circumstances that he couldn't control.
- 17:36He said this in Habakkuk 2 too. The Lord answered me.
- 17:39Write the vision. Make it plain on tablets so he
- 17:44may run. Who reads it?
- 17:46Hear that right? Make the plan.
- 17:49Write the vision down. Make it plain so that you can
- 17:53run, so that you can execute it. That's God's instructions for
- 17:57someone who needs to move with purpose towards a future that
- 18:01doesn't yet exist. Write the vision down of your
- 18:05debt free life. Make the plan plain enough so
- 18:09that you can actually execute it and then run right, Do it.
- 18:14Get after it. Now here's where I want to get
- 18:16into some very practical territory.
- 18:19Because a principle without application is absolutely
- 18:24useless. Every effective debt elimination
- 18:28strategy has three components, and that because some financial
- 18:32guru invented them. But because they reflect the
- 18:35biblical wisdom that we've just been reading, here's the first
- 18:38component. A budget that actually works,
- 18:43right? Not a budget that you made once
- 18:44and forgot about. A written monthly budget where
- 18:48you tell every dollar that you bring in where it's going to go
- 18:53before the month ends, right? Every single dollar that I'm
- 18:57going to bring in this month, I'm telling it where it's going
- 19:01to go. And I'm doing that before the
- 19:02month even begins. Proverbs 2723.
- 19:06Again, know the condition of your flocks, know where your
- 19:10money's going, know where you're going to send it.
- 19:13You cannot know the condition of your flocks if you've got no
- 19:16idea where the flock is going, right?
- 19:18You've got to know where your money's going.
- 19:20A budget here is, it's not a punishment, right?
- 19:24A budget is a tool. It's a strategic tool in the
- 19:29hands of a, of a diligent man who plans.
- 19:32That's what it's, that's what it's there for.
- 19:33OK #2A focused attack. Once you have a budget, you
- 19:40identify the minimum payments on every single debt and then you
- 19:44find any extra money you can and you throw that extra money at
- 19:50one debt at a time. Now, how do you find extra
- 19:55money? You find extra money by selling
- 19:58everything you don't need. That's the first step.
- 20:00Sell everything that you don't need.
- 20:02If you got an extra car, sell it.
- 20:04If you got an extra bike, sell it.
- 20:05If you got a motorcycle, sell it.
- 20:07If you got a boat, sell it. Financial.
- 20:10You know, expert, let's say Dave Ramsey says at this stage you
- 20:14should sell so much stuff that your kids think they're next,
- 20:18right? Have a garage sale.
- 20:20Put stuff on Facebook Marketplace.
- 20:22Get rid of as much stuff as possible, take that money and
- 20:25then apply it to either the smallest credit card balance
- 20:30first, which will build momentum and you'll feel some quick wins,
- 20:35or apply it to the credit card that's got the highest interest
- 20:38rate first, which will eventually save, or in the long
- 20:42run will save the most money. Now, different experts disagree
- 20:46on which method is better mathematically.
- 20:50I'll tell you this, the method you actually stick to is the
- 20:54right one, right? Whatever 1 you can stick to,
- 20:57that's the best one. Pick one, commit and be a man of
- 21:01your word to yourself. Don't go back.
- 21:06Dave Ramsey also says that if you want to get out of debt
- 21:09fast, right, you've got to see debt as the enemy and you've got
- 21:13to sell as much stuff as possible, right?
- 21:16To apply it to that debt to get to sell that thing down, Sell,
- 21:21sell, sell. Just sell it, sell it, sell.
- 21:23OK, Component 3, The income and expense gap here is the math
- 21:30that cannot be avoided. The speed at which you can get
- 21:34out of debt is entirely determined by the gap between
- 21:37what you make and what you spend.
- 21:40To get out of debt faster, you either spend less, earn more, or
- 21:46both. What does that mean?
- 21:48That means you have to make hard, disciplined choices.
- 21:53It means maybe the vacation has to wait.
- 21:58It means you may maybe you have to pick up extra work.
- 22:01Maybe you have to start a side hustle.
- 22:03Maybe you have to start working weekends and a few nights of the
- 22:06week. It might mean selling the car
- 22:09that has too much debt on it and buying something cheaper.
- 22:13Now. None of these decisions are fun
- 22:14decisions because they feel like failures to us, right?
- 22:17We're going to look like we're failing.
- 22:18We're going to look like we're, you know, not making as much
- 22:21money as we are, or we're going to look poor.
- 22:23We're going to look foolish. But what we have to think about
- 22:27is these decisions are meant to be temporary, right?
- 22:32The discipline we show now leads to freedom in the future.
- 22:36I want to try to live poor now so that I can live free later.
- 22:43The plan that we make, the plan to get out of debt, and the plan
- 22:47that we're going to execute. This plan is an act of faith.
- 22:50It says, I believe that obedient, consistent action
- 22:55under God's guidance can change my future.
- 23:01Write down the plan, make it plain, and then run your race.
- 23:05OK, principle three. If you want to get out of debt,
- 23:09you need to wage war in community.
- 23:13You were never meant to fight alone.
- 23:17Here's one of the most dangerous lies that debt tells us.
- 23:20It says you got to carry it alone.
- 23:23It says shame is the price of being in debt.
- 23:27That real men handle their own problems.
- 23:30That bringing someone else into your financial mess makes you
- 23:33weak or foolish. That lie will keep you broke and
- 23:37isolated for the rest of your life if you believe it now.
- 23:40Solomon knew this long before our modern debt crisis.
- 23:44He says this in Ecclesiastes. 49 through 12/2 are better than one
- 23:48because they have a good reward for the toil.
- 23:51For if they fall, one will lift up his fellow, but woe to him
- 23:55who is alone when he falls, and has not another to lift him up
- 23:58again. Again, if two lie together, they
- 24:00keep warm, but how can one keep one alone?
- 24:03And though a man might prevail against one who is alone, 2 will
- 24:07withstand him. A three fold cord is not easily
- 24:11or quickly broken. Now what does this mean?
- 24:15This means we need a band of brothers.
- 24:19We need a Fight Club. We need some dudes that can hold
- 24:23us accountable and help us when we're struggling.
- 24:25When you're fighting your way out of debt, there's going to be
- 24:28months where the car breaks down, the furnace goes out, and
- 24:32you're feeling like you're not making headway, You feel like
- 24:35you're losing. There's going to be moments of
- 24:36discouragement when the number doesn't seem to be moving in the
- 24:38right direction. There'll be temptations to give
- 24:41up and go back to swiping the card because you're tired and
- 24:45you just want to go see a movie, or you just want to go out to
- 24:47dinner, or you just want some kind of comfort right now in the
- 24:50moment. And in those moments, if you're
- 24:52fighting alone, the chances of quitting go up dramatically.
- 24:56Many of these videos that I've been sent, these people are kind
- 25:01of trying to hold themselves accountable by putting it on
- 25:03social media. And many of them are succeeding,
- 25:05right? They're posting a video every
- 25:07single day of paying off debt, paying off debt, being
- 25:10consistent month after month after month.
- 25:12But there's many people that just give up.
- 25:14There's many people that just quit.
- 25:15Why? Because the patterns of their
- 25:17old life are difficult to break. And they actually don't have
- 25:20real life community that can say, hey, bro is, are those new
- 25:24Golf clubs? Hey, bro, it, you know, is that
- 25:26a new, is that a new outfit? What's what's going on with
- 25:29that? Are you swiping again?
- 25:30Right? We need brothers to help us get
- 25:34out of debt. Proverbs 1522 says it like this.
- 25:38Without counsel, plans fail. But with many advisors, they
- 25:44succeed. Now that's not a suggestion,
- 25:48that's a warning. Your plan, no matter how good it
- 25:50is, has a higher chance of failing if you try to execute it
- 25:54without some brothers helping you, without accountability and
- 25:58community. God built us for a relationship.
- 26:01He said it's not good. That man should be alone, and
- 26:03that includes our financial battles, right?
- 26:06Iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.
- 26:10Now, let me talk specifically to married men here for a minute.
- 26:16Your spouse needs to be your partner in this fight, not your
- 26:21secret keeper and not someone you keep secrets from.
- 26:25One of the most damaging things that happens in marriages
- 26:27crushed by debt is the secrecy. One partner knows the full
- 26:32picture, the other one has been protected from it, or excluded
- 26:36from it, or deceived about it. That secrecy doesn't protect
- 26:40your marriage, it actually poisons it.
- 26:42It weakens it. Scripture is very clear about
- 26:46the unity of marriage, right? Two people come together, they
- 26:49become one flesh. That of course means one bank
- 26:53account, one set of goals, 1 battle plan.
- 26:56So what you owe your wife owes what your wife owes you owe when
- 27:04you pay off debt, your wife gets out of debt, right?
- 27:08You got you got to know this. Both of you win here.
- 27:12If you've been hiding debt from your wife, you need to speak.
- 27:15I need to speak directly to you here, the conversation that
- 27:20you're dreading. And I know nobody wants to talk
- 27:23about debt. Nobody wants to have this hard
- 27:25financial this, you know, discussion with your wife,
- 27:29right? It sucks, but that conversation
- 27:32is meant to be the beginning of your freedom.
- 27:36Not just your financial freedom, but freedom in your marriage.
- 27:42Tearing down the walls that are separating you.
- 27:44Because right now, the secret is just it's just a wall between
- 27:48you and your one of you is probably suffering in silence.
- 27:52Taking down that wall is going to be painful, but a marriage
- 27:55fighting together is infinitely stronger than one partner
- 27:58pretending that everything's fine.
- 28:02One of the best men in the Bible who knew how to confront an
- 28:08impossible situation and be a builder was Nehemiah.
- 28:12Nehemiah had a huge task ahead of him.
- 28:15He was called by God to rebuild the walls and rebuild the city
- 28:19of Jerusalem after years of destruction and neglect.
- 28:25And here's how he accomplished that mission.
- 28:27Nehemiah 217 through 18, He says, Then I said to them, you
- 28:31see the trouble we're in, right? Look at it, right?
- 28:34Look at the trouble we're in, how Jerusalem lies in ruins with
- 28:38its gates burned. This is years of neglect, right?
- 28:43The city is in a bad shape. And he says this, come, let us
- 28:46build the wall of Jerusalem that we may no longer suffer
- 28:51derision. Yes, we're in a shameful spot.
- 28:54Yes, people are mocking us. Yes, it really looks bad.
- 28:57Yes, it really is bad. But let's build it up, let's fix
- 29:01it, let's repair it, let's fight.
- 29:03And I told them of the hand of my God that was upon me.
- 29:07God, God's hand is upon you. If you're a Christian and he
- 29:09wants you to get out of debt, he's going to help you get out
- 29:11of debt. And also the words that the king
- 29:13has said to me and they said, let us rise up and build.
- 29:17So they strengthen their hands for the good work.
- 29:20You see here that that Nehemiah cast a vision, right?
- 29:24He cast a vision. We're going to get out of the
- 29:26trouble we're in. He says, let's, let's rebuild.
- 29:30Let's get to work. Let's get out of this debt.
- 29:33We're in a bad shape, but we can do it.
- 29:35Let us rise up and build. And because he cast that vision
- 29:40and he trusted his people with the truth, right?
- 29:43He didn't say, oh, no, it's not that.
- 29:45It's really not that big a deal. No, it's we're in bad shape, he
- 29:48said. But he trusted his people with
- 29:51the truth. He cast a compelling vision for
- 29:53the future. And then what did they do?
- 29:55They rallied around him, right? They were willing to join him in
- 29:59the fight to rebuild the city. See, that's what you have to do
- 30:05with your wife. You have to count the cost.
- 30:09You have to show her the number. You have to have the difficult
- 30:12conversation. You have to admit we're in a bad
- 30:14spot. And you know what?
- 30:15It's my fault we got here, right?
- 30:17I'm responsible for it. You have to own that.
- 30:20You have to say God wants to get us out of debt.
- 30:23And then you say, and God can get us out of debt.
- 30:25If we if we cast a vision and we execute and we write the plan
- 30:30and we execute the plan, we can do it.
- 30:34See, man, your wife, she has more personally at stake in the
- 30:42outcome of your plan than anyone else.
- 30:45You need her on board. You need to cast the vision.
- 30:48You need her on board. You need her behind it because
- 30:51she's going to have to Start Stop swiping right, swiping the
- 30:54credit card. You, you also need more than
- 30:57likely a Christian brother who's going to ask you the hard
- 31:00questions, right? Maybe you need to invite a
- 31:02pastor or a mentor into the situation that you trust.
- 31:05Maybe you need to get a financial counselor.
- 31:08You, you don't have to broadcast your debt on social media like
- 31:12so many people are doing right now, but you do need at least
- 31:15one or two people who know your number, who are in your corner.
- 31:18They know your plan and they have permission to ask you every
- 31:23month. Hey bro, how are you doing?
- 31:26Are you on track? What do you need?
- 31:30Accountability is not weakness, it's wisdom.
- 31:33More than likely, the man who fights alone, he's going to fall
- 31:35alone. The man who fights in community,
- 31:38he's going to finish and listen. Lastly, above all community,
- 31:44above all accountability. Your greatest resource in the
- 31:47fight is your God. Your God who promises to provide
- 31:52for you. The same God who parted, sees,
- 31:56and multiplied bread is not troubled by your debt.
- 32:01He's not looking at your balance and shaking his head.
- 32:04He's looking at you and asking you, do you trust me?
- 32:07Our God owns the cattle on 1000 hills, right?
- 32:10That means the whole earth is his all the wealth of it earth
- 32:14is his, and He can send you opportunities that you don't
- 32:18even know around the corner if you're willing to trust him
- 32:21right and to create the plan and to work the plan.
- 32:25Philippians 419 And my God will supply every need of yours
- 32:30according to his riches and glory in Christ Jesus, every
- 32:34need according to his riches, not according to your current
- 32:38paycheck, not according to your credit score, according to the
- 32:41riches of God who created every resource in the universe.
- 32:44This is who on your who, this is who is on your side.
- 32:47And we must remember it. All right, let me land the
- 32:50plane. Here you got 3 principles, 3
- 32:54weapons that God has given you to break the chains of debt and
- 32:58walk in financial freedom. Principle One.
- 33:01Confront the enemy. Face the number.
- 33:04Write down every debt. Bring it to God.
- 33:07Stop hiding from the truth, because the truth, even the
- 33:09painful truth, is the only ground that you can build a
- 33:12secure future on. Principle 2.
- 33:15Write the plan and work the plan.
- 33:17Build a real budget. Pick your debt and attack it
- 33:20with everything you've got. Identify the gap between your
- 33:22income and expenses and do the hard work of widening it.
- 33:26Be a diligent man, not a hasty one.
- 33:29Plans lead to abundance and the absence of a plan leads to
- 33:33poverty. Principle three.
- 33:35Wage war in community. Let your wife in.
- 33:38Find your Fight Club, get your band of brothers.
- 33:41Be accountable. Stop trying to carry this alone.
- 33:44God made you for a relationship and many times getting out of
- 33:48debt is on the other side of a honest conversation that you've
- 33:52been avoiding for years. So men, I hope this was a
- 33:57blessing to you. Hopefully it was helpful.
