0:46
Speaker 3: All right, ladies and gentlemen. I'm here with Let's Talk
0:49
Speaker 3: and my crew. I gotta have Hollis Lewis and Odi Hello,
0:54
Speaker 3: and once again Lisa, our distinguished other co hosts.
1:02
Speaker 4: Hollis Lewis has some news.
1:06
Speaker 3: That he's gonna put out there and we will have
1:08
Speaker 3: a discussion after he kind of gives us a little
1:11
Speaker 3: bit of an update on the transfer. Okay, so basically
1:14
Speaker 3: what during the legislative session, We've had interims this week.
1:17
Speaker 3: Again it got a little disrupted because of the weather,
1:20
Speaker 3: and during the interims, the Joint Education Committee athletic directors
1:24
Speaker 3: and other interested parties, but particularly athletic directors came in
1:27
Speaker 3: and they talked to lawmakers again. And I just want
1:30
Speaker 3: to clarify during interests, when not actually passing laws anything
1:34
Speaker 3: like that, were actually sort of taking in information so
1:36
Speaker 3: that way, once the session actually officially starts, you know,
1:39
Speaker 3: we'll be able to move forward with bills and different
1:42
Speaker 3: things of that nature. But in essence, athletic directors from
1:46
Speaker 3: around the state they came and talked to lawmakers about
1:48
Speaker 3: their issues with the transfer rule. You know, most of
1:53
Speaker 3: the some of the law some of the athletic directors
1:56
Speaker 3: they were for, they liked the school choice, but I
1:58
Speaker 3: would say most of them took issue with it just
2:01
Speaker 3: causing disruption. They named things like far as irregular. And
2:06
Speaker 3: the thing that you know struck me the most is
2:09
Speaker 3: that they were particularly concerned about junior and seniors transferring.
2:15
Speaker 3: That's who they were concerned because I think number one
2:18
Speaker 3: they talked about that just the disruption as far as
2:20
Speaker 3: the community base, which you've talked about, as far as
2:23
Speaker 3: around the schools and talking about you know, you know,
2:26
Speaker 3: leaving those sophomores and freshmen behind, not being able to
2:31
Speaker 3: cultivate talent. And also they talked about the inequities as
2:34
Speaker 3: far as like which we'll talk about here in a second,
2:37
Speaker 3: the scoring, you know, those who are actually getting the
2:40
Speaker 3: kids or you know, they talked about the increased numbers
2:43
Speaker 3: of shortened games, and for those who don't know, in
2:45
Speaker 3: high school sports, once you're up by a certain amount
2:48
Speaker 3: in like I think the second half, it's a continual clock, right,
2:51
Speaker 3: you know, to the score comes back down to a
2:53
Speaker 3: specific number. I think once you're about thirty five, I
2:55
Speaker 3: think something like that. I think it's I want to
2:57
Speaker 3: say thirty five.
2:59
Speaker 5: Thirty five, Yep, it's got to be around thirty five.
3:01
Speaker 4: Yeah, I think it's thirty five.
3:02
Speaker 3: So basically, when you're about five touchdowns, it's just a
3:05
Speaker 3: continual o'clock.
3:06
Speaker 4: And that's crazy.
3:07
Speaker 3: And as far as the numbers before you say that,
3:10
Speaker 3: the numbers went from one fifty five and two thousand
3:13
Speaker 3: and three from shortened games to two fifty five in
3:17
Speaker 3: twenty twenty four, so it's been one hundred game increase
3:20
Speaker 3: in one year. And we've also seen it increased number
3:23
Speaker 3: of transfers. So and everybody's clear that I have I
3:30
Speaker 3: hate this like I hate every every part of it.
3:34
Speaker 3: And word, yeah, it is the right word. It is
3:39
Speaker 3: the right word for me specifically because what I don't understand,
3:44
Speaker 3: and I've said, you know, to the safety issue, just
3:48
Speaker 3: to the safety issue, when when that top player, those
3:52
Speaker 3: top players, those juniors and seniors leave, they force those
3:57
Speaker 3: sophomores and basic freshness who are who are ninth graders?
4:04
Speaker 3: You know, you start talking about ninth and tenth graders
4:07
Speaker 3: playing leading off against the team that's loaded with transfer kids.
4:14
Speaker 3: That's how you get those seventy You score seventy points
4:17
Speaker 3: against another team. The physicality of that is crazy to me.
4:24
Speaker 3: I mean, it makes no sense that you can you
4:29
Speaker 3: can see, I don't care how long you sit in
4:31
Speaker 3: a room. I don't care how long in what you
4:33
Speaker 3: say and how you try to justify it. It is
4:36
Speaker 3: not okay.
4:38
Speaker 4: It's just not for me. I just as a football
4:41
Speaker 4: player looking at it and trying.
4:44
Speaker 3: To say, okay, can I take a college Can I
4:48
Speaker 3: take a freshman sophomore college kid put him into into
4:54
Speaker 3: a practice in the NFL in physical contact, how's that
5:01
Speaker 3: gonna work? And just to put it in perspective. In
5:05
Speaker 3: twenty twenty three, statewide, there were approximately four hundred and
5:09
Speaker 3: thirty two transfers. That's across all fall sports, and in
5:14
Speaker 3: twenty twenty four there were four hundred and thirty three.
5:17
Speaker 3: So we're seeing annually at least for the last the
5:20
Speaker 3: sample size, about four hundred and thirty plus kids are
5:23
Speaker 3: transferring annually now for the last two years at least.
5:27
Speaker 5: And the problem with that too, Hollis and Carl, I
5:29
Speaker 5: think part of it is when this began, when this
5:31
Speaker 5: whole transfer portal issue began, it was a one time
5:35
Speaker 5: transfer deal.
5:36
Speaker 4: Am I correct?
5:37
Speaker 5: At the beginning when it was first introduced, it was
5:39
Speaker 5: a one time transfer and it was before their ninth
5:42
Speaker 5: grade year, right, and then.
5:43
Speaker 3: After that was like now, I think that's the original Reglar,
5:46
Speaker 3: original one, that's the original one probably would not have
5:49
Speaker 3: had the ramifications, and it didn't that it's growing into today,
5:54
Speaker 3: and I guess the changes that the legislatures made to
5:58
Speaker 3: the legislation over the years is is just grown into
6:01
Speaker 3: this monster now that that's really affected the whole landscape
6:05
Speaker 3: of high school football. Hallisten, I have a question for
6:08
Speaker 3: you to your point, what has what Okay, So let's
6:15
Speaker 3: say it's at point you know, point A, right, it's
6:19
Speaker 3: going to start at a and it's and it's kind
6:22
Speaker 3: of okay. You know, people can dislike it, people like
6:25
Speaker 3: me can dislike it. But it's but it's okay. It's
6:28
Speaker 3: a certain live with it.
6:29
Speaker 4: So you can live with it.
6:30
Speaker 3: You're living with it. And then by then you wait
6:33
Speaker 3: two more two more years, three more years, four more years,
6:36
Speaker 3: and then all of a sudden, it's completely out of control.
6:39
Speaker 3: Well how does that happen? It happens because of now
6:43
Speaker 3: you've implemented freedom of choice as far as schools. So
6:46
Speaker 3: when you have the Hope scholarship and now I can
6:48
Speaker 3: go to any school I want to, I can. You know,
6:51
Speaker 3: I don't have to go to school. I'm not bound
6:53
Speaker 3: by my district anymore. So if if again, and I'm saying,
6:57
Speaker 3: if you're a regular student, you can go to any
6:59
Speaker 3: school that you want to based on this whole scholarship,
7:01
Speaker 3: I can go to public school, private school, charge school,
7:03
Speaker 3: with anything I want. So by defect, by default, you
7:06
Speaker 3: cannot now tell me I can't play sports at the
7:09
Speaker 3: school now that I'm transferring to. So basically, when you
7:12
Speaker 3: implement the sort of the mindset and the strategy of
7:15
Speaker 3: saying freedom of choice as far as school is concerned.
7:18
Speaker 3: Then by default sports come with that, you know, so
7:22
Speaker 3: I think you almost can't have one without the other.
7:26
Speaker 3: You can't allow me to say I can go to
7:27
Speaker 3: any school I want, but I can't play I have
7:29
Speaker 3: to sit out a year and do all these extra
7:31
Speaker 3: things to play sports. So I think that you know,
7:35
Speaker 3: it's to me, it's sort of hard to walk it
7:38
Speaker 3: back as far as the transfers is concerned, because I
7:42
Speaker 3: still have freedom of choice in school and you cannot
7:45
Speaker 3: come back and say, well you, because I think some
7:48
Speaker 3: people will say, well, Okay, you can't transfer for athletic reasons,
7:51
Speaker 3: well you, And I know some people athletically as far
7:54
Speaker 3: as it's tied to school is just as much as academic.
7:58
Speaker 4: That's what they're there to do.
7:59
Speaker 3: And then they'll you know, get their academics on the
8:01
Speaker 3: back end, or academics arise, you know, as they go
8:03
Speaker 3: through school. So it's going to be hard in my
8:06
Speaker 3: mind to walk this back because of that.
8:10
Speaker 5: So how do we fix this? I mean the legitimately, well,
8:16
Speaker 5: is there a fix? I don't know, but I mean
8:18
Speaker 5: what we're seeing in the fall for high school football
8:21
Speaker 5: is atrocious. I mean, we're seeing these these kids, the
8:25
Speaker 5: games aren't competitive. There's only what's happening is they all
8:29
Speaker 5: migrate to the one you know, the high schools that
8:31
Speaker 5: have the best athletic programs, and then those schools keep
8:35
Speaker 5: thriving and they keep attracting those those better athletes and
8:38
Speaker 5: the rest of the it's almost it's almost mirrors what's
8:43
Speaker 5: going on at the college level. It really does.
8:46
Speaker 3: And I would say, just my opinion, I would say
8:49
Speaker 3: you have to start with coaching. So number one, I again,
8:53
Speaker 3: I don't know where this money's coming from, because again
8:55
Speaker 3: that's what we all complaining about. We fight at the
8:57
Speaker 3: legislature every day. Will I would say, we have to
8:59
Speaker 3: pay our coaches more. And I almost think it should
9:04
Speaker 3: be like a separate position outside of school. I think
9:06
Speaker 3: it should be a salary position, and we need to
9:08
Speaker 3: demand from our coaches like, hey, we're gonna pay you
9:11
Speaker 3: a salary position to coach. It's like they doing Texas,
9:14
Speaker 3: just like they're doing Kentucky, South Carolina all over the country.
9:17
Speaker 3: This is a salary position to coach. Now, gain you
9:19
Speaker 3: might have some other responsibilities in the school, but your
9:21
Speaker 3: main job is to coach. This is what you're getting
9:24
Speaker 3: paid for. And I think that if we allow our
9:28
Speaker 3: coaches just to focus on coaching, then they could you know,
9:31
Speaker 3: rise their level and kids would be attracted to come
9:34
Speaker 3: to this school because they're going to get excellent coaching.
9:36
Speaker 3: So I think that to me, that's where it could
9:39
Speaker 3: be a fix at because again I don't know unless
9:42
Speaker 3: you're gonna say we're gonna change all this legislation, we
9:44
Speaker 3: want to stop hope scholarship and do all this stuff,
9:47
Speaker 3: and again we know that's probably not going to happen
9:49
Speaker 3: at least not none of these next couple of administrations. Right,
9:53
Speaker 3: So I think we got to allow our coaches to
9:56
Speaker 3: focus on coaching, so that way I can be a
9:58
Speaker 3: full time coach no matter i' to the Cameron. If
10:01
Speaker 3: I'm a South Charleston from a capital for Miss spring
10:03
Speaker 3: Mill and I can get I can dedicate my time
10:06
Speaker 3: to that. So so so let's say in my situation
10:10
Speaker 3: going to South Charleston, I know and I mean what
10:18
Speaker 3: I and I wasn't worried about the financial piece of it.
10:21
Speaker 3: But I'll say this, I cannot imagine someone who's not teaching,
10:26
Speaker 3: who's not doing something else in the school, either in
10:31
Speaker 3: the school or working somewhere else. You can't just coach.
10:36
Speaker 4: That's what I'm saying. I'm saying, pay you enough.
10:38
Speaker 3: Dolge, just so you can just coach, so you're not
10:42
Speaker 3: a supplement a salary, not a supplement a salary.
10:44
Speaker 4: That's exactly what I'm because you put it.
10:46
Speaker 3: I mean, I don't know if people understand the hours
10:51
Speaker 3: that coaching demand you.
10:54
Speaker 4: You don't understand it unless you've coached, you know, Yeah,
10:56
Speaker 4: I mean literally, you're there. You probably the first person there,
11:02
Speaker 4: you know, in the morning, and you're probably likely going
11:05
Speaker 4: to be the last person or you and a couple
11:08
Speaker 4: of coaches are going to be the last people leaving
11:11
Speaker 4: well past nine o'clock.
11:13
Speaker 3: And that's the thing, Like you can have actually an
11:15
Speaker 3: excellent coach who's filled with knowledge, who knows what they're doing.
11:19
Speaker 3: But because it's a supplement, they have family obligations, they
11:23
Speaker 3: have their other career obligations. They don't have the time
11:26
Speaker 3: to be invested to the point that they should be
11:30
Speaker 3: right because and again and again, you may have and
11:33
Speaker 3: that may be different for different schools who you know,
11:36
Speaker 3: operate a little different. But I say, make it a
11:39
Speaker 3: salary position where you are paid to coach, so that
11:42
Speaker 3: way you can invest all your time, and you can
11:44
Speaker 3: do everything you need to do in order to raise
11:48
Speaker 3: the level of your program.
11:49
Speaker 5: And how do you see that working? I mean your
11:51
Speaker 5: vision of that. Would it be like a teacher salary
11:54
Speaker 5: or because even that I think you know, being a teacher,
11:58
Speaker 5: that's hard to make it on I mean starting a supplement,
12:03
Speaker 5: but still I don't know if that's I think it
12:05
Speaker 5: will help.
12:06
Speaker 4: But then and to okay, to your point, so let's
12:10
Speaker 4: say that happens.
12:12
Speaker 3: I've got to have five six coaches who are gonna
12:16
Speaker 3: be there and going to be as active as I'm
12:18
Speaker 3: gonna be.
12:20
Speaker 4: What do we pay them?
12:21
Speaker 2: You know?
12:21
Speaker 4: And and again I'm not trying to I'm not trying.
12:23
Speaker 3: To make it, but just trying to make people see
12:27
Speaker 3: the expense, how expensive the coaching aspect of it is.
12:33
Speaker 3: And if you're not getting that, I just don't know how.
12:37
Speaker 3: I mean, again, in the offer, in the in the
12:39
Speaker 3: in the solution that I'm offering, I would even submit
12:43
Speaker 3: to you that it is probably not the best solution.
12:45
Speaker 3: I just don't know if there's another solution. If we're
12:49
Speaker 3: going to say you have freedom of choice as far
12:51
Speaker 3: as any school, you have the whole scholarship, you can
12:53
Speaker 3: do anything you want as far as your personal education.
12:56
Speaker 3: So so we're saying, so if it's going to be
12:59
Speaker 3: hard to restrict transferring based off that, then I think
13:03
Speaker 3: the answer is, say we're gonna pay coaches a comparable salary.
13:07
Speaker 3: We're gonna give maybe some increases for as supplements to
13:11
Speaker 3: a few assistant coaches. So maybe you have, you know,
13:15
Speaker 3: a head coach getting this, an assistant getting that. Then
13:17
Speaker 3: we're gonna supplement a couple more assistants. So that way,
13:22
Speaker 3: at the very least, these coaches could be dedicate one
13:24
Speaker 3: hundred percent of their time to that sport. Because what
13:28
Speaker 3: we know is that, you know, sports are just as
13:31
Speaker 3: important as academics to some kids, and this is some
13:34
Speaker 3: kids pathway not to NFL, but just to college, or
13:37
Speaker 3: not even to college.
13:38
Speaker 4: Maybe just to make it through high school. Yes, you
13:40
Speaker 4: know what I mean. So we know that.
13:41
Speaker 3: So if any listener could offer any other, you know, solution, please,
13:47
Speaker 3: I'm all ears because I just don't know if that's
13:50
Speaker 3: the only thing I could really think of, to be
13:52
Speaker 3: honest with you, and Lisa, you know, I think about
13:55
Speaker 3: myself and and I'm I was just ate up withall.
14:00
Speaker 3: I love sports, but football was the thing that I
14:04
Speaker 3: was trying to get.
14:06
Speaker 5: That was your goal, that was my goal, end goal.
14:09
Speaker 3: And I'm trying to figure out, like today, how does
14:17
Speaker 3: that coach, how does a coach coach me? How how
14:22
Speaker 3: do we manage how do we manage this situation here
14:26
Speaker 3: of either you having you're having a problem with transfers.
14:36
Speaker 3: You know, let's say I'm pretty good, I get pretty good.
14:38
Speaker 3: How does that coach now coach me.
14:42
Speaker 4: To keep me? How does he like what is he
14:44
Speaker 4: supposed to do?
14:45
Speaker 3: You know?
14:46
Speaker 4: And if somebody saying, oh man, he's getting really good,
14:49
Speaker 4: and I'm thinking in my mind, you know, I might
14:52
Speaker 4: go you know, I may go to g W because
14:55
Speaker 4: Hollis is up there and they won a championship and
14:58
Speaker 4: we haven't won one. I might want to go there.
15:00
Speaker 4: If you're the coach, what's your what's your what's the
15:04
Speaker 4: things that you said to hold?
15:05
Speaker 5: I think it's just a fine line these coaches have
15:08
Speaker 5: to walk. I mean it used to be that, you know,
15:10
Speaker 5: the kids didn't have the option of being able to
15:13
Speaker 5: leave when they wanted to basically, and the coach had
15:17
Speaker 5: more more leeway. I guess the power that power in
15:23
Speaker 5: the way that they disciplined students or their student athletes
15:27
Speaker 5: in the way they they you know, practiced with those
15:30
Speaker 5: with those kids, how how they how they treated them
15:32
Speaker 5: in general. And now these kids know what their options
15:36
Speaker 5: are and they know if they don't like the way
15:38
Speaker 5: things are going at the school or the way the
15:39
Speaker 5: coach spoke to them today at practice, or you know,
15:43
Speaker 5: just maybe the the the way the path that the
15:47
Speaker 5: school's following as far as championships. You know, they know
15:50
Speaker 5: these things. They their social media that they see everything
15:52
Speaker 5: that it's crazy all of the outlets that they have
15:56
Speaker 5: and the information access they have way more than we had.
15:59
Speaker 4: Here's the thing.
16:00
Speaker 3: As a coach now, your job has changed. If you're
16:02
Speaker 3: a head coach, I would say, and I'm saying as
16:07
Speaker 3: a modern head coach, I don't know if your job
16:09
Speaker 3: is football now, and I would say that if you
16:13
Speaker 3: want to attract students, you want to track, you want
16:15
Speaker 3: to keep those athletes, number one, you gotta recruit your
16:17
Speaker 3: own locker room. And number two, you got to give
16:19
Speaker 3: them something. So for example, if you take like a
16:21
Speaker 3: Martinsburg coach, well, if you know you go, if you
16:23
Speaker 3: going to Martinsburg, it's a good chance that you're gonna
16:26
Speaker 3: win a state championship, so you can you can basically
16:29
Speaker 3: you can recruit me on that because then you have
16:31
Speaker 3: other coaches who you know, they're traveling the country. You
16:35
Speaker 3: take what Donnie Mays did a hurricane. He went to
16:37
Speaker 3: Detroit and played the game. Right, so now there's sort
16:40
Speaker 3: of that national exposure. I can go to Detroit and
16:42
Speaker 3: go to Ohio. I think they're gonna play They're gonna
16:45
Speaker 3: open up in Ohio or Kentucky next year. Right, So
16:48
Speaker 3: now it's like, and I'm talking abut hurricane here locally.
16:50
Speaker 3: So now I'm playing these regional and and sort of
16:53
Speaker 3: national games so I can get national exposure that way.
16:56
Speaker 3: You have other coaches who are you know, every year
16:58
Speaker 3: they putting kids in college. So you gotta have something.
17:01
Speaker 3: You gotta almost have a stick. Now I'm not saying
17:03
Speaker 3: a gimmick per se, but you gotta do have something
17:06
Speaker 3: that you do really really well. So you're not getting
17:09
Speaker 3: me unless you have something. You gotta do something that
17:12
Speaker 3: I care about. So that's either that's gonna be giving
17:15
Speaker 3: me national exposure through playing these national games or doing
17:19
Speaker 3: the seven h seven thing, or or I'm gonna win
17:22
Speaker 3: a championship or I'm gonna this is a hot bed.
17:24
Speaker 3: I'm gonna recruit. You have all these relationships, that's part
17:27
Speaker 3: of what you're working on. So it's got or for example,
17:30
Speaker 3: GW you're gonna get the balance of being in a
17:33
Speaker 3: good athletic program and an excellent academic program. So you
17:37
Speaker 3: have to have something as a coach that you can say, hey,
17:40
Speaker 3: this is what we do well and if you care
17:42
Speaker 3: about this, this is the place for you.
17:45
Speaker 4: So I think your days of just going out there and.
17:48
Speaker 3: Trying to kick butt and cut some people out and
17:50
Speaker 3: coach and just being on football discipline, them days are gone.
17:54
Speaker 3: You gotta have something that you do really, really well
17:57
Speaker 3: that's going to attract to this and some some programs.
17:59
Speaker 3: Hey you just I have the fly and best gear.
18:01
Speaker 3: We a Nike school. We got we got all the
18:04
Speaker 3: fresh new everything. So it's gotta be something. This is
18:07
Speaker 3: bigger than football. Now is your job as a as
18:10
Speaker 3: a football coach? Even and I'm saying that's at the
18:13
Speaker 3: high school level, college level.
18:14
Speaker 5: And even you know, but do you think these high
18:16
Speaker 5: school coaches realize that that?
18:20
Speaker 3: I think again, I think I like Donnie Maye realizes
18:24
Speaker 3: a lot of kids go to college and he's doing
18:26
Speaker 3: the thing where he's he's basically trying to travel to
18:29
Speaker 3: the region playing other teams do it.
18:31
Speaker 4: And I think that to your point, the folks who
18:34
Speaker 4: are who are out of touch are people like me.
18:38
Speaker 3: Who the old people like the old folks that are coaching,
18:42
Speaker 3: who are just like like we we just don't, we can't.
18:45
Speaker 4: It happened too fast, and it didn't. I wasn't part
18:48
Speaker 4: of that transition.
18:49
Speaker 3: I walked into that kind of a transition, and I'm
18:52
Speaker 3: like looking at this and thinking to myself, like, no,
18:55
Speaker 3: this is no, I'm not I'm not gonna recruit you.
18:58
Speaker 3: I had I had a couple of folks who were
19:01
Speaker 3: who were friends of mine, was like, you know, hey,
19:06
Speaker 3: you know we're willing to I said, look, if you
19:09
Speaker 3: want to come, come, I'm not I know, I'm not
19:13
Speaker 3: coming to you.
19:14
Speaker 4: I'm not offering you nothing. I'm not saying, I'm not kidding.
19:18
Speaker 3: I'm not gonna suggest to you to bring your son
19:23
Speaker 3: from Hollis's team just because I want to be the
19:26
Speaker 3: better team.
19:27
Speaker 4: I just that don't work for me. That just does
19:29
Speaker 4: not work for me. And I mean, but you got it.
19:32
Speaker 3: I know that's the way that is that I even
19:35
Speaker 3: if you look at like Saint Albans with coach Stotts,
19:37
Speaker 3: like you should have seen what he did with their
19:39
Speaker 3: locker room, their field out right, this is high school.
19:41
Speaker 3: They got the little drink stations, they got pool, they
19:43
Speaker 3: got PlayStation in there. It looked, it looks beautiful in there, right,
19:47
Speaker 3: And that's just something that you got to have to
19:50
Speaker 3: get kids coming.
19:51
Speaker 5: And to your point, Hollis and to yours, Carl, that
19:54
Speaker 5: probably what the smaller schools that are not on the
19:57
Speaker 5: levels of the Martinsburgs and the gw is maybe what
19:59
Speaker 5: they can bring to the table and offer is hey,
20:01
Speaker 5: playing time. Absolutely, and Martinsburg you come down here, you're
20:06
Speaker 5: gonna start for us. I mean they've got to They've
20:10
Speaker 5: got to figure out ways. They may not have the
20:12
Speaker 5: lucrative resources financially to be able to track these kids,
20:16
Speaker 5: but they can't attract them with playing time.
20:17
Speaker 3: And I'll say that too to your point, Lisa, that's
20:20
Speaker 3: another thing. As a head coach, you just again you
20:23
Speaker 3: can't spend all your time out there on the football field,
20:25
Speaker 3: think you just coaching. You gotta go talk to your community.
20:27
Speaker 3: You got to go talk to the to the big
20:29
Speaker 3: time lawyer, the car dealer, your friends, the alumni, and
20:33
Speaker 3: you gotta get that money up too. That's a part
20:35
Speaker 3: of this deal too. It amazes it just amazes me
20:39
Speaker 3: that we we just got here, especially in high school,
20:44
Speaker 3: we got here so fast.
20:47
Speaker 4: I don't know, though, I think we got here slow
20:49
Speaker 4: West Virginia. I think stuff like this been.
20:51
Speaker 3: Going on, comparing us to I'm not comparing us to
20:56
Speaker 3: other other states. I'm just just thinking it seemed like
21:00
Speaker 3: it started and we're already and we have already blew up.
21:04
Speaker 3: Like you know, right, it happened quicker than I think
21:07
Speaker 3: coaches got money.
21:09
Speaker 4: I think it.
21:10
Speaker 3: Happened quicker or all the benefits are are available to you,
21:15
Speaker 3: Like I don't. You're talking to me about something, man,
21:17
Speaker 3: and I ain't. I don't know yet that I can promise.
21:20
Speaker 5: You that you know and I know with me, But
21:29
Speaker 5: do you do you also think, guys, that this might
21:31
Speaker 5: deter a lot of promising coaches to not go into
21:36
Speaker 5: high school coaching just because of all the things that
21:39
Speaker 5: are being required of it now without compensation. I mean,
21:42
Speaker 5: I really think what you said makes the most sense
21:45
Speaker 5: is to find a way to salary these coaches because
21:47
Speaker 5: what they're doing on a supplement is not going to
21:49
Speaker 5: attract I mean unless they're just really, really really you know,
21:53
Speaker 5: in love with being a coach at the high school
21:56
Speaker 5: level and the supplements part is not, it's not going
21:59
Speaker 5: to cut it.
22:00
Speaker 3: I would to answer your question, and I was a
22:03
Speaker 3: high school, middle school, and youth level coach for about
22:05
Speaker 3: eight years, and there's no way at this point in
22:09
Speaker 3: my life i would step back into any coaching that
22:12
Speaker 3: I'm not looking at trying to make hundreds of thousands,
22:15
Speaker 3: if not millions of dollars. If I'm going to spend
22:17
Speaker 3: my time as a high school football coach. Number One,
22:20
Speaker 3: I want to be the head coach. I'm trying to
22:22
Speaker 3: rise to that level, right, So I want to rise
22:24
Speaker 3: to the level to be a head coach. And if
22:26
Speaker 3: I'm going to spend all that time because basically to
22:29
Speaker 3: what we just talked about, pretty much you're a small
22:31
Speaker 3: college collegiate coaches as far as time is concerned, right,
22:35
Speaker 3: and the things that you're now having to do. So
22:37
Speaker 3: if I'm going to do that, then I'm trying to
22:39
Speaker 3: get to Alabama. I'm trying to get to Florida State
22:41
Speaker 3: up Marshall, w I'm trying to get supplemented handsomely for
22:46
Speaker 3: what I'm doing. You're so, if I'm hearing you correctly,
22:51
Speaker 3: you're you're somewhat just like the parents and the kids are.
22:54
Speaker 3: They're looking for their best situation and I'm and you're
22:57
Speaker 3: looking for you know, not necessarily, but what I'm saying
23:01
Speaker 3: is like, I'm not going to spend all that time
23:03
Speaker 3: doing that too, to have and to deal with all
23:07
Speaker 3: the things that come with it. And then then I'm
23:10
Speaker 3: looking up and I'm not being supplemented in a way
23:13
Speaker 3: that's I think, you know what I mean. It's so
23:17
Speaker 3: if I'm gonna do this, then I'm I need to
23:18
Speaker 3: go to the collegiate route, or at least I can
23:21
Speaker 3: get paid.
23:21
Speaker 5: Right, because it's not like it used to be. It
23:23
Speaker 5: used to be a supplement was fine because basically the
23:25
Speaker 5: coach went out there that he you know, conducted practices,
23:29
Speaker 5: he took the team to games, went to a PEP assembly.
23:32
Speaker 5: I mean, there was wasn't like the things that it
23:35
Speaker 5: is involved now, or at the.
23:36
Speaker 4: Least you knew you had your guys. You knew that.
23:40
Speaker 3: At least like I knew that if I'm going to
23:43
Speaker 3: South Charleston Middle, Dunbar Middle, I know these are the
23:46
Speaker 3: kids that I'm getting.
23:47
Speaker 4: I'm probably gonna have a couple move in, pupple move out.
23:49
Speaker 4: But I know what I got. But now, shoot you,
23:53
Speaker 4: it's You's a battle. It's a battle. I want. I
23:58
Speaker 4: want to. I want to the middle schools a couple
24:02
Speaker 4: of times, two you know.
24:05
Speaker 3: Which which I was advised to because I would not
24:08
Speaker 3: have probably done it, but I was advised. I was
24:12
Speaker 3: not to the point when I say I wasn't thinking
24:16
Speaker 3: about necessarily doing it.
24:18
Speaker 4: I wasn't.
24:19
Speaker 3: I wasn't even really sure really where we were, you
24:22
Speaker 3: know what I'm saying, And so I would my first
24:25
Speaker 3: concern would have been given them something to see, right, Okay, okay,
24:30
Speaker 3: But so but I go to I go to to
24:33
Speaker 3: the middle school, and when I look like I'm looking
24:40
Speaker 3: and I'm talking to the kids like I don't see,
24:43
Speaker 3: like I don't see nobody that's really like locked in,
24:46
Speaker 3: focused in, want to hear what I gotta say. But
24:50
Speaker 3: then when I get back, it's the same thing. You know,
24:54
Speaker 3: when I come back to the school high school, I'm
24:57
Speaker 3: looking for that. I'm looking for you, who's listened to me,
25:00
Speaker 3: who's waiting on just something to motivate you? A step more,
25:06
Speaker 3: get more desired, just anything possible. And I'm not and
25:10
Speaker 3: I'm not speaking about any kids, and I'm not talking
25:13
Speaker 3: about the group of kids. I'm just saying but for
25:15
Speaker 3: me as the coach trying to try trying to get
25:18
Speaker 3: into to South Charleston and trying to get kids to
25:24
Speaker 3: stay focused or get focused, get prepared, try to go
25:31
Speaker 3: out and actually play and win some games. Man, it was,
25:36
Speaker 3: it was, it was so it was a challenge of
25:39
Speaker 3: even trying to find who was really interested in actually
25:44
Speaker 3: getting out on the field and really going after I mean,
25:47
Speaker 3: there were there were some, but again it wasn't their
25:51
Speaker 3: time yet. That's the problem that the kids who were
25:54
Speaker 3: supposed to be playing with the kids that were gone,
25:57
Speaker 3: and all of a sudden, now I've got a kid
25:59
Speaker 3: who who it's not developed, who's not ready yet, doesn't
26:02
Speaker 3: even know what he's supposed to be thinking or how
26:05
Speaker 3: he's supposed to be acting, what role he can play?
26:08
Speaker 4: Can he be the leader? You know, all of a sudden,
26:10
Speaker 4: you've been following, you know, a senior, a junior, a senior,
26:14
Speaker 4: and now they're gone, and now it's you.
26:17
Speaker 1: What do you do?
26:20
Speaker 4: Man? How do you even like? How do you even.
26:22
Speaker 5: I mean, the maturity levels between a freshman and a
26:25
Speaker 5: senior is night and day.
26:26
Speaker 4: Unbelieving, night and day unbelievable.
26:29
Speaker 3: But I think too, like again, and I could take
26:32
Speaker 3: myself like when I was a sophomore freshman man, if
26:34
Speaker 3: you I'm one on the field and like during my era,
26:38
Speaker 3: like we want on the field, like it don't matter, solveimore,
26:41
Speaker 3: kick that out the window right, put me and the
26:43
Speaker 3: game coach. And I just think that, like I said,
26:45
Speaker 3: it's just it's a it's a different time now, it's
26:47
Speaker 3: a different but see, motivations are different.
26:50
Speaker 4: Kids think.
26:51
Speaker 3: I think those kids think the same thing that we
26:53
Speaker 3: thought back then, like I can play, let me in,
26:55
Speaker 3: I want to go.
26:57
Speaker 4: But the problem with that is some of them have
27:00
Speaker 4: no idea yet what it really is.
27:03
Speaker 3: I mean I would agree with that, and I think
27:05
Speaker 3: that's always just you know, if you're new to something,
27:07
Speaker 3: then that's always going to be kind of the the
27:10
Speaker 3: the thing that you have to battle with, even within
27:12
Speaker 3: yourself or as a coach. But I think now again,
27:15
Speaker 3: I just think the motivations are different. I don't think,
27:17
Speaker 3: like I said, it's it's hard to just come in
27:19
Speaker 3: there with the Rob Rod speech it's hard to when
27:22
Speaker 3: there's nothing else being you know, offer when there's nothing
27:25
Speaker 3: else being promised, when there's nothing else being done outside
27:28
Speaker 3: of football, it's like you gotta do a lot of
27:30
Speaker 3: football plus stuff.
27:31
Speaker 4: Are there? Are there?
27:34
Speaker 3: Do you think there's as many solidified, believable work ethics.
27:40
Speaker 4: That are being put forth to want to go play
27:44
Speaker 4: college ball? One hundred percent? Do you think so percent?
27:47
Speaker 3: You've seen like all the collegiate athletes that are in
27:50
Speaker 3: West like coming out of West Virginia, these kids are
27:53
Speaker 3: going D one, whether it's WVU type D one, big
27:56
Speaker 3: Power four now or they're going to the smaller levels.
27:58
Speaker 3: So it's a it's a lot of kids coming out
28:01
Speaker 3: here playing college foot well. Again, to Lisa's point, what's
28:03
Speaker 3: happening now is that the talent has going to one
28:07
Speaker 3: place now. Talents are getting consolidated because they're you know,
28:12
Speaker 3: there's going to you know, maybe one school or you
28:14
Speaker 3: may have five or six or ten college players at
28:18
Speaker 3: one school. I think we are having more players, which
28:24
Speaker 3: we've never had a ton. We've got more players now
28:28
Speaker 3: that are getting to that D one level and having
28:33
Speaker 3: an opportunity and getting opportunities to actually get there and
28:36
Speaker 3: play then we've probably ever had. Okay, but I'm not
28:41
Speaker 3: sure if those kids are just they're just they're just
28:45
Speaker 3: gifted in in in size, speed, determination and kids. Kids
28:51
Speaker 3: work hard. Now that's what I one thing I will
28:53
Speaker 3: say if you look at like because kids are doing
28:55
Speaker 3: like a lot of the summer stuff, they're going to
28:57
Speaker 3: private trainers. It's just a different type of work. It's
29:01
Speaker 3: not work that's being facilitated one hundred percent by the
29:04
Speaker 3: football program. Right, So a lot of that work is
29:08
Speaker 3: coming from private trainers. They're going to plan for different
29:12
Speaker 3: seven or seven or AAU teams, So they're going they're
29:14
Speaker 3: getting this work at a lot of different places. It's
29:17
Speaker 3: not like it was back in the day where there
29:20
Speaker 3: you're you as a coach, are seeing everything because you're
29:23
Speaker 3: facilitating all of it. And I think that's a that's
29:26
Speaker 3: a that's a bit of a problem. They're not a problem,
29:29
Speaker 3: but just a different take.
29:30
Speaker 5: Yeah, it's a different take. And to also say this,
29:33
Speaker 5: I when you think about some of your key skill
29:35
Speaker 5: players that are going to these bigger schools that have
29:39
Speaker 5: the they're laden with juniors and seniors. You've got a
29:42
Speaker 5: better offensive line, you've got a better defensive line, you're
29:44
Speaker 5: gonna better. You're going to better to be able to
29:46
Speaker 5: perform better just because you've got better people around you.
29:50
Speaker 5: So your your skill set's going to be able to shine.
29:52
Speaker 4: Are So are we?
29:53
Speaker 6: Are we?
29:54
Speaker 4: Yeah?
29:54
Speaker 1: Are we?
29:55
Speaker 3: Is there a problem? Is there a problem for me
30:00
Speaker 3: as the kid that needs to develop because those kids
30:05
Speaker 3: leave and now you leave me with a team that's
30:09
Speaker 3: possibly that that could be a problem because again, it's
30:12
Speaker 3: not like it's like the iron sharp and iron Like
30:14
Speaker 3: when I remember when Zaki Lawton and Exavier Bosley both
30:19
Speaker 3: Division one football players, when they were both at South
30:22
Speaker 3: Charles and they would you know, Zaki Lowton was a
30:24
Speaker 3: defensive line, Xavier Bosley was a e Zaki Lawton was
30:28
Speaker 3: a defensive linment and Xavier Bosley was an office line
30:31
Speaker 3: and they would go head up head in practice every day,
30:34
Speaker 3: right and they made.
30:35
Speaker 4: Both I was gonna say, and it paid.
30:37
Speaker 3: So again, that could be a problem because if you
30:39
Speaker 3: just had one of them there and they're going against
30:41
Speaker 3: way lesser talent in once they get in the game,
30:43
Speaker 3: that could be problematic because it's not like the again,
30:45
Speaker 3: the iron sharp and iron. All right, ladies and gentlemen,
30:48
Speaker 3: we're gonna take a quick break and we will be
30:50
Speaker 3: right back.

31:51
Speaker 2: the conversation.
31:52
Speaker 4: All right, ladies and gentlemen, we.
31:55
Speaker 3: Are done with I guess the fighting, the fighting of
32:01
Speaker 3: for now football and the transfer and.
32:05
Speaker 4: I think now we're going to go to basketball, you know,
32:10
Speaker 4: and the reality of NBA.
32:14
Speaker 3: And I've been I don't know why I keep hearing this,
32:18
Speaker 3: but you know, the obviously because it's true. The decline
32:23
Speaker 3: in basketball the NBA viewership, Yeah, has dropped drastically. It's
32:30
Speaker 3: a forty eight percent drop from twenty twelve to now
32:34
Speaker 3: in viewership in the NBA specifically, Wow, And you hear
32:39
Speaker 3: people talk about I don't know if I let me
32:42
Speaker 3: rephrase that, I hear people talk about basketball players. I
32:46
Speaker 3: don't know if I hear them talk about basketball as
32:49
Speaker 3: a whole as like a team per se. Has basketball
32:54
Speaker 3: lost its identity to individual players that you only watch
32:57
Speaker 3: those players? That's actually a good question, and I think
33:00
Speaker 3: basketball is It's kind of always been like that to
33:03
Speaker 3: a certain degree, but you had those sort of team
33:06
Speaker 3: makeups where you know, you would talk about like a
33:09
Speaker 3: Michael Jordan, but you're talking about the totality of the bulls.
33:12
Speaker 3: In my mind, I think what I would contribute to
33:14
Speaker 3: the decline is just the style of play. I think
33:18
Speaker 3: it's it's become too much reliant on the three point shot.
33:22
Speaker 3: And while I like positionless basketball, I don't like it because,
33:28
Speaker 3: like I don't want to see Wemby, you know, at
33:30
Speaker 3: the three point line all the time. I don't want
33:33
Speaker 3: to see a guy like Kevin Gard Kevin Durant, you know,
33:36
Speaker 3: he's a great skilled basketball player man getting the post.
33:39
Speaker 3: But where's the guys that nobody's playing back to the
33:43
Speaker 3: basket and give me them, you know, kim O Lajawan
33:46
Speaker 3: or Shack Moves, you know, where we can have those
33:49
Speaker 3: sort of different identities on the court.
33:52
Speaker 2: You know.
33:52
Speaker 3: So I think to me and and the last one
33:55
Speaker 3: I make is like I think they've adopted a euro
33:58
Speaker 3: style of basketball. And it's not the it's just it
34:01
Speaker 3: lacks umph, it lacks aggression. To me, it's too finesse.
34:05
Speaker 3: So NBA games are just unless it's the playoffs, is
34:08
Speaker 3: terrible to watch in mys And.
34:10
Speaker 5: That's exactly I'm going to add to his point because
34:13
Speaker 5: you know, I used to love the NBA whenever Michael Jordan.
34:16
Speaker 5: I'm dating myself and it's okay, But you know, when
34:18
Speaker 5: Michael Jordan, you had the Chicago Bulls, that era of
34:22
Speaker 5: basketball that was exciting to watch. They had that whole team,
34:24
Speaker 5: you knew all you know, the Pippin and all the players.
34:27
Speaker 5: I used to love it. And then, like you just said,
34:30
Speaker 5: it's gotten monotonous, like there's no emotion, there's no It's
34:34
Speaker 5: like they're just they're going through the motions of making
34:36
Speaker 5: three pointers and then they just go back and forth
34:38
Speaker 5: and you just don't see, like you said, the umph,
34:41
Speaker 5: I don't know, the attraction to me is not there anymore?
34:45
Speaker 4: Does that make?
34:47
Speaker 3: Are we making the case that the true identity of
34:51
Speaker 3: the big man down low is what we're losing, is
34:54
Speaker 3: what we've lost? And look, I would say that, but
34:57
Speaker 3: I also would say the little man right because now
35:00
Speaker 3: remember back in the day, like an Alan Everson, right,
35:03
Speaker 3: what made him so phenomenal? A special number when he's
35:06
Speaker 3: a tremendous athlete, he was quick, he would take you
35:09
Speaker 3: off the drivell then what he's not necessarily just gonna
35:11
Speaker 3: always settle for the three. He's going right to the rack,
35:15
Speaker 3: you know what I'm saying. So having the little man
35:16
Speaker 3: hands and throw off, so having a little so having
35:20
Speaker 3: the Isaiah Thomas is the Alan Everson's. The Stevie franchises,
35:24
Speaker 3: the Stefan Marberrys, you know, having those guys who were
35:27
Speaker 3: phenomenal athletes, maybe a bit undersized that but have the
35:31
Speaker 3: quickness and the savvy to take you off the drivel
35:34
Speaker 3: to you know, shoot it around, you shoot it over,
35:36
Speaker 3: you go over you, you know, the fancy driveling moves.
35:39
Speaker 3: It made it so exciting because you got like a
35:42
Speaker 3: sort of a dichotomy of big and little, fast and slow,
35:45
Speaker 3: you know, sort of you know, quick and strong. So
35:48
Speaker 3: you got all those flavors within basketball. Now now everybody
35:53
Speaker 3: is like a white wall. They're just the same or
35:56
Speaker 3: the same color wall. Everybody's just the same.
35:57
Speaker 4: Do you do you do you blame? Do you blame
36:00
Speaker 4: Magic for that? Because he's that six to six point guard,
36:05
Speaker 4: one of the early.
36:05
Speaker 3: Guys to be able to six nine and being able
36:10
Speaker 3: to handle the ball bringing.
36:11
Speaker 4: It up the court. So all of a sudden, will
36:15
Speaker 4: we will not speak ill of Magic? John? No, I
36:20
Speaker 4: think he's great. I'm just saying so. Now everybody wanted
36:24
Speaker 4: to be him, so even the big guy. But let
36:26
Speaker 4: me ask you this, he was like, I don't want
36:28
Speaker 4: to go down there like work kareem up. But Magic
36:30
Speaker 4: did that. So during the rookie year, the first the
36:33
Speaker 4: Championship that he won the rookie year. Keeam was hurt.
36:36
Speaker 3: So what did they do?
36:37
Speaker 4: Magic gets your butt in the post and he's shooting
36:39
Speaker 4: hook shots. He is in the post and number.
36:41
Speaker 3: One and I think the second one match he played
36:43
Speaker 3: with Flair, right, so he's coming down the court, he's
36:46
Speaker 3: behind the back. No look all this it was. It
36:48
Speaker 3: was beautiful to watch. Now they don't have that sort
36:51
Speaker 3: of flair and that sort of joy playing the game.
36:54
Speaker 3: It's like, like I said, it seems like people just
36:56
Speaker 3: going through the motion.
36:57
Speaker 5: Yeah, and can I throw this out there. I'm not
36:59
Speaker 5: really sure if they could play a factor in it
37:01
Speaker 5: or not. But the reason that maybe the viewing the
37:04
Speaker 5: numbers have dropped is because there's a variety of other
37:07
Speaker 5: sports that are available to watch that are more exciting
37:09
Speaker 5: at that time. I mean, you've got now that you've
37:11
Speaker 5: got the college football Championships going on till what January twentieth, Now,
37:15
Speaker 5: that's got to take some viewers away. You've got you know,
37:20
Speaker 5: college basketball starts early, and so that's a competition for them.
37:24
Speaker 5: So it's it's not only the product that they're putting
37:26
Speaker 5: out there on the court, but it's the the other
37:28
Speaker 5: products that are available that they're probably more attractive to viewers.
37:33
Speaker 4: But I don't know, Well, I agree with that, but yeah,
37:36
Speaker 4: because I'm going to make the case. You know, you
37:39
Speaker 4: look at Caitlin.
37:39
Speaker 3: Clark like she's carrying she's she took some college viewership
37:47
Speaker 3: to the WNBA. So so, but I think the style
37:51
Speaker 3: of play for the WNBA, if you've been watching basketball
37:56
Speaker 3: for a lot a long time, it's just it's better.
37:58
Speaker 4: It is, you know what I'm saying.
38:00
Speaker 3: Again, They're playing exciting. Yeah, they're playing position basketball. You're
38:04
Speaker 3: gonna have a big, you're gonna have a small, you're
38:06
Speaker 3: gonna have dump it in the post. You're gonna have
38:07
Speaker 3: somebody playing with the back to the basket, I mean outside.
38:10
Speaker 3: If they could, you know, dunk or readily, I think
38:13
Speaker 3: it would just surpass the the NBA game or had
38:16
Speaker 3: the capacity to. I just think, like I said, it's
38:18
Speaker 3: just I would agree that there's a lot more viewing options,
38:22
Speaker 3: So I think that can contribute to some of the decline.
38:25
Speaker 3: But when you're talking about a fifty percent dip, that
38:29
Speaker 3: that's that's I would be alarmed by that, and I
38:31
Speaker 3: think they are. I think they are because they're doing
38:33
Speaker 3: like the player they're doing, like the playing tournaments and
38:36
Speaker 3: different things of that nature to try to up to
38:38
Speaker 3: try to make it more exciting. So I just think again,
38:41
Speaker 3: to me, I don't think it's a matter of anything
38:44
Speaker 3: other To me, it's just the style of play. When
38:46
Speaker 3: watching Michael Jordan, I would watch Michael Jordan or Kobe
38:49
Speaker 3: Brown or Shock. I'm watching them all season. I'm not
38:52
Speaker 3: just waiting to the playoffs. I'm watching Alan Iverson all season,
38:55
Speaker 3: and you could see them doing different things. They weren't
38:58
Speaker 3: just shooting. They you know, they were passing, they were
39:01
Speaker 3: playing defense, they were doing that. And now I don't
39:06
Speaker 3: see that hunger. I see a great skill set. I mean,
39:12
Speaker 3: everybody can shoot threes, but but if I'm Kareem, I'm not.
39:17
Speaker 3: I don't have to worry about shooting the three. I'm
39:18
Speaker 3: not ever gonna be out that far. If I'm out
39:21
Speaker 3: that far, I'm on my way to the bench. That's
39:23
Speaker 3: what I'm saying. Think of Kareem now, if Korea was
39:25
Speaker 3: playing now, he'd be in the three point Yeah he
39:27
Speaker 3: was shooting, right. I Mean, it's fun to watch for
39:29
Speaker 3: a while, but it's like, dang, well, you always a
39:31
Speaker 3: hook shot.
39:32
Speaker 5: And let's face it, don't you think the season is
39:34
Speaker 5: a bit lengthy?
39:35
Speaker 4: Would?
39:36
Speaker 5: Yeah? I mean I think it's just I think I
39:38
Speaker 5: think after a while, you know, unless you're a hometown
39:41
Speaker 5: fan of some of these teams, it's just it's the
39:43
Speaker 5: same stuff over and over, and there's so many games.
39:46
Speaker 5: And they start in November and they end in June.
39:48
Speaker 5: I mean, that's a long over season. What is it
39:51
Speaker 5: They start in October?
39:52
Speaker 3: I think they started October's I would have totally agree
39:57
Speaker 3: with that. I say started Christmas, yes, and in May. Well,
40:02
Speaker 3: I'm going to say this, I'm I'm totally against the
40:07
Speaker 3: crossover of sports. Like football should have it season, Basketball
40:13
Speaker 3: have it season, you know, just to allow folks an
40:16
Speaker 3: opportunity to to actually watch what they want because you
40:20
Speaker 3: got everything, like you there's there's a period of time
40:23
Speaker 3: where like everything is on television, Like you.
40:25
Speaker 4: Got basketball, you got baseball, you got football. Like, no,
40:28
Speaker 4: I don't want that. I don't want that.
40:32
Speaker 5: It's a nightmare. If you have ADHD.
40:36
Speaker 3: WHOA, I don't know what to do, you know, and
40:39
Speaker 3: I just I really don't think, you know, And again
40:43
Speaker 3: when you start talking about how many games, did you
40:45
Speaker 3: say basketball?
40:47
Speaker 5: How many money.
40:51
Speaker 4: A lot.
40:54
Speaker 5: I mean, really, we know it's money, but now that
40:57
Speaker 5: the decline is coming, you know, with the line of viewership,
41:00
Speaker 5: you've also got to decline in the you know, the
41:03
Speaker 5: financial part of it. So maybe they'll consider that.
41:06
Speaker 3: I don't know, I seriously, seriously doubt, but they would do.
41:12
Speaker 3: I think the last increase it. Yeah, the last thing
41:15
Speaker 3: they would do is I would think they would decrease
41:17
Speaker 3: the number of games. I mean when we talk about that,
41:20
Speaker 3: I mean I think that's even true for like the NFL.
41:22
Speaker 3: We don't need more games per se, but I would
41:25
Speaker 3: be for like sixty games. I think that would make
41:28
Speaker 3: it way more competitive. I think, you know, shortening that
41:31
Speaker 3: season would be Again, they're not going to do it.
41:33
Speaker 3: I mean I've seen one I forgot. I was looking
41:36
Speaker 3: on social media or something and I won't name a team,
41:39
Speaker 3: but they were just giving away Darner giving away the tickets,
41:42
Speaker 3: I mean tickets five bucks for decent you know, basketball tickets.
41:45
Speaker 3: Because again, when you're talking about these games in October, November, December, January, February,
41:50
Speaker 3: it's just like watching paint rite.
41:52
Speaker 4: It's not very good well and you don't and it
41:55
Speaker 4: doesn't even matter at that point. It doesn't even matter.
41:58
Speaker 4: It's not it.
41:59
Speaker 3: You don't even know who's gonna really truly be in
42:01
Speaker 3: the playoffs until literally it's like a month or so
42:05
Speaker 3: out and then people getting locked in.
42:09
Speaker 4: I'm not trying to I can't. I can't give you
42:12
Speaker 4: that every night. I just can't. I just gotta be
42:15
Speaker 4: like a super fan.
42:16
Speaker 3: And then you then you add college and god forbid
42:20
Speaker 3: if you if you watch how if you're in the community,
42:22
Speaker 3: you go to see your high school, you ain't got
42:25
Speaker 3: a chance to it.
42:26
Speaker 4: That's a lot of basketball, man, that's a lot about it.
42:29
Speaker 3: And I would say, like college basketball is, you know,
42:31
Speaker 3: it's it's generally always pretty good just because they're on
42:34
Speaker 3: a tighter time crush. But even that's kind of lost
42:37
Speaker 3: his mustard just because of the fluidity of the transfer situation.
42:41
Speaker 3: You don't have those guys like the Pittsnoggles right, who
42:44
Speaker 3: are saying you got to know the names and the
42:47
Speaker 3: personalities and kind of how they play. So now you
42:51
Speaker 3: I think what sports have done with transfer almost it
42:54
Speaker 3: forces you to be like an insider right where you
42:57
Speaker 3: got to like read all the news, you gotta you gotta,
43:00
Speaker 3: you know, be a yes being subscriber to the insider
43:02
Speaker 3: to figure out what's going on.
43:04
Speaker 4: And I don't.
43:05
Speaker 3: I don't don't have that type of time and energy
43:07
Speaker 3: to I don't know if most of the problem I'm
43:11
Speaker 3: going to say, I don't think most people do. And
43:13
Speaker 3: and I do think that it's part of that drop
43:18
Speaker 3: because so, I mean, yeah, you got so many games,
43:21
Speaker 3: So what if I miss this game? So what if
43:24
Speaker 3: I miss that game? We got months to go, you know,
43:29
Speaker 3: And I mean, really, football, you're thinking, Okay, you got
43:33
Speaker 3: sixteen weeks, you can miss a couple. You can you
43:36
Speaker 3: may can miss a couple games, but if it's your
43:38
Speaker 3: team and you love them, you trying to get to
43:40
Speaker 3: as many of those games because you only got a
43:42
Speaker 3: few TV games.
43:43
Speaker 4: Yeah.
43:44
Speaker 3: One of the things that you know, again that this
43:46
Speaker 3: isn't coming from me, but a lot of like the
43:49
Speaker 3: former NBA players, one of their complaints again their insiders,
43:53
Speaker 3: they're more closer to the game. But one of the
43:55
Speaker 3: things they said this is like it seems to be
43:57
Speaker 3: like a lack of caring about the games. I'm the
44:00
Speaker 3: current players. They gave one example where you know, Paul George,
44:03
Speaker 3: I think they say he has this a horrible game.
44:06
Speaker 3: They lost big and he's on the next night, he's
44:09
Speaker 3: like doing his podcast, you know, and just talking about
44:12
Speaker 3: just as far as the love and the intensity, the passion,
44:15
Speaker 3: as you mentioned, Lisa, about the game is sort of
44:18
Speaker 3: like that's coming from their perspective. So I think when
44:21
Speaker 3: you look at like a decline, it's you know, it's
44:23
Speaker 3: a bunch of different And I think, and I think
44:26
Speaker 3: you have to be careful when you start talking about, quote,
44:31
Speaker 3: getting into the media, why you're doing something, you.
44:34
Speaker 4: Know, like while you're playing the game.
44:36
Speaker 3: I don't because because that's not that's not really a
44:39
Speaker 3: good look, you know, big, big track, because are you
44:46
Speaker 3: worried about it?
44:47
Speaker 4: Are you worried about the game? Are you worried about it?
44:50
Speaker 3: But again, everybody's doing that now, everybody like all these podcasts,
44:54
Speaker 3: they have, the radio shows, some are on TV. It's
44:57
Speaker 3: just like again, it's almost like basketball now is like
45:02
Speaker 3: the you know, sort of the stepping stone to get
45:05
Speaker 3: to somewhere else, as opposed to back in the day
45:08
Speaker 3: it was the ultimate goal. Now, So I think again,
45:11
Speaker 3: I just think particularly with basketball players because they again
45:14
Speaker 3: they make a lot more money, they're a lot more visible,
45:17
Speaker 3: so their opportunities to do things in the media and
45:21
Speaker 3: or otherwise is greater probably than any other sport.
45:24
Speaker 4: Right, what what basketball? What's the best for you? Hollis?
45:34
Speaker 4: What's the when if you said you had to watch
45:36
Speaker 4: a basketball game, not not teams, but just you were
45:40
Speaker 4: going to watch a basketball game at what level?
45:42
Speaker 3: Would you want to watch it? From college all the
45:45
Speaker 3: way down? Let's say the high school? I'll probably if
45:48
Speaker 3: I had to. I mean that's kind of I mean,
45:50
Speaker 3: of course you always want to watch the NBA, right,
45:52
Speaker 3: but all things being equal, Like if I'm just looking
45:54
Speaker 3: at passion, intensity, drive, like high school would be for me?
46:00
Speaker 4: Or none?
46:00
Speaker 3: Like an elite high school like those those two elite
46:03
Speaker 3: high schools going Like if you had like the Oak
46:05
Speaker 3: Hills and the Honeyton Preps going to gainst your eyes
46:08
Speaker 3: in acadedy, y'all want to see one of that?
46:09
Speaker 4: That's why I want to do include like the high
46:11
Speaker 4: school a least? What would you?
46:12
Speaker 5: What do you think I like college?
46:13
Speaker 4: Like?
46:14
Speaker 5: Yeah, especially like marsh madness. That's my favorite time of year.
46:17
Speaker 5: That that's fun.
46:18
Speaker 4: And see, I would it was easy. It would be
46:20
Speaker 4: easy for me. It would be high school just simply
46:23
Speaker 4: because I like the idea of those kids out there
46:26
Speaker 4: actually trying to work to get to something, to make
46:30
Speaker 4: themselves into something, and which is now crazy because you
46:34
Speaker 4: start talking about high school, that's probably the least that's
46:36
Speaker 4: the least money maker money making sport. Then college and
46:43
Speaker 4: the pros.
46:44
Speaker 3: And then too, I would I would say definitely, that's
46:47
Speaker 3: just a close because I mean a lot of those
46:49
Speaker 3: that's a fun just time. You know, it's not like
46:51
Speaker 3: football where you're just sitting out march madness. Them guys
46:54
Speaker 3: ain't sitting out there playing, you know what I mean.
46:56
Speaker 5: And then there's a lot of upsets. You always have
46:57
Speaker 5: those Cinderella teams. That's fun to watch those. It's when
47:00
Speaker 5: they beat a you know, an elite team.
47:02
Speaker 3: Not to jump off off track, but I heard this,
47:04
Speaker 3: I think this is correct that that case the Chiefs,
47:09
Speaker 3: they sent all their players down.
47:12
Speaker 5: That's a problem.
47:14
Speaker 3: Yeah, what happened was because they lost, then the Bengals,
47:17
Speaker 3: who were on a five game winning streak they did
47:19
Speaker 3: they missed the playoffs. So I think if Kansas City
47:22
Speaker 3: would have won, then it would have propelled the Bengals
47:25
Speaker 3: into the playoffs because they so.
47:26
Speaker 4: Maybe that was why that conversation came up, and.
47:28
Speaker 5: How disappointing for Let's say a Kansas City chief fan
47:31
Speaker 5: lives in that area for the Denver game, and they
47:34
Speaker 5: go to that game to see the Chiefs play, and
47:36
Speaker 5: every single starter is out, Like, but.
47:41
Speaker 3: If you're a fan, though you want to, you don't
47:43
Speaker 3: want to see your guys get hurt. I had this conversation,
47:47
Speaker 3: you know, I mean, I had this conversation earlier, and
47:49
Speaker 3: I said the scenario was, Okay, so you you got
47:55
Speaker 3: your daughter and she's a die hard Mahmes fan, right,
47:59
Speaker 3: and you're driving to Kansas City to go see a game.
48:02
Speaker 3: You're driving there, You're gonna drive back just so she
48:04
Speaker 3: can see him play. Ain't Nobody said nothing that he
48:07
Speaker 3: ain't playing. And then all of a sudden you show up,
48:10
Speaker 3: you sitting, you to got front row seats.
48:13
Speaker 4: She's excited. They're all out on the field warming up.
48:17
Speaker 3: Then they come out for the first player on offense
48:20
Speaker 3: and the whole starting offense is on the side.
48:22
Speaker 4: Again, I get it.
48:24
Speaker 5: I got to be what do you say to you
48:26
Speaker 5: spent the money, you gotta bee.
48:29
Speaker 3: But you gotta be an ESPN insider and an analyst.
48:32
Speaker 3: And if you know that, you're gonna know that because
48:36
Speaker 3: that's what sports are now. You gotta gotta read everything,
48:39
Speaker 3: you gotta do everything. You gotta make a conscious decision.
48:42
Speaker 3: You just can't do spur of the moment stuff like that.
48:44
Speaker 3: No more so that don't work. Now, well do you think?
48:47
Speaker 4: Do you think?
48:48
Speaker 3: You know? But all in all serious, that sucks for fans.
48:50
Speaker 3: But really, if I'm a fan, though, but if I'm
48:53
Speaker 3: a fan, though, you're gonna stay with it. I'm almost
48:56
Speaker 3: I'm almost taking a view as a player. We're moving
48:59
Speaker 3: on to next week. We got bigger fist of Fry's
49:01
Speaker 3: kind of conversation.
49:02
Speaker 5: I never liked that approach though, I don't. I mean,
49:04
Speaker 5: even regardless of the fans. I think it's when when
49:06
Speaker 5: you set out the starters it made backfire. I mean,
49:09
Speaker 5: we've seen look what happened with the collegiate championships. There's
49:12
Speaker 5: got the four teams they got to buy. They they
49:15
Speaker 5: all lost. So sometimes it's not always the best thing.
49:18
Speaker 3: I can remember a couple of different times when we
49:21
Speaker 3: were toward the end, we knew we were going into
49:23
Speaker 3: the playoffs. You played like that, like a half or something,
49:28
Speaker 3: you know, but you wasn't like you weren't not going
49:31
Speaker 3: to play at all.
49:33
Speaker 4: You know, they weren't going to like put the whole
49:34
Speaker 4: second team in.
49:35
Speaker 5: That was not gonna I mean that happened the whole
49:37
Speaker 5: They never Mahome.
49:40
Speaker 4: I don't think.
49:41
Speaker 5: I forget.
49:42
Speaker 3: You got a Carson Wentz, I think that's his name. Yeah,
49:45
Speaker 3: he started the whole game. No wonder it was a
49:48
Speaker 3: quarterback if I got them wrong. Yeah, well, but but
49:51
Speaker 3: basically nobody else that nobody else playing, I don't think.
49:56
Speaker 4: I mean, and again you I mean, you got to
49:59
Speaker 4: do what you think it's best for your team, you know,
50:04
Speaker 4: But do you do But let me ask this question.
50:06
Speaker 5: You never know?
50:06
Speaker 4: Do you do you lose something? Or is that just
50:09
Speaker 4: like did you just call that about?
50:11
Speaker 3: I think I think a team like that who's been
50:13
Speaker 3: in the championship for the last four or five years,
50:16
Speaker 3: it doesn't matter to them. But I think maybe a
50:18
Speaker 3: new team, like if you're emerging to that level, you
50:21
Speaker 3: probably go ahead and play at least a half or
50:23
Speaker 3: something like that because you don't want to lose the momentum.
50:25
Speaker 3: But for like a Kansas City, they've been there, done that,
50:27
Speaker 3: they will before that.
50:28
Speaker 4: But have they have they ever done this before?
50:30
Speaker 3: I think that I mean that I don't remember. I
50:33
Speaker 3: don't know if they like set guys out totally. But
50:35
Speaker 3: I'm towards the end of the season, I'm sure they
50:37
Speaker 3: played like a half or something like that.
50:38
Speaker 5: And hasn't Mahome's been questionable like with his leg or
50:42
Speaker 5: something big up.
50:45
Speaker 3: They played a lot of ball games the last four
50:47
Speaker 3: or five years, so I don't I'm not mad at him.
50:49
Speaker 3: But again from a pan, perfective ain't great, see I think,
50:53
Speaker 3: and again you you you gotta do what you got
50:55
Speaker 3: to do to win. And but on the other side
50:58
Speaker 3: of it, you know, the fans themselves, they don't have
51:03
Speaker 3: to be they don't have to they're the losers.
51:05
Speaker 4: Yeah, you know.
51:08
Speaker 3: And we also got the NFL plaus We've got the
51:10
Speaker 3: collegiate playoffs coming up too.
51:12
Speaker 5: Oh yes, so that's that's the next exciting thing besides
51:15
Speaker 5: the weather we've had the past week or so. But anyway,
51:19
Speaker 5: I thought I would lead off with this because this
51:22
Speaker 5: is a famous Bear Bryant quote that I came across
51:25
Speaker 5: that offense sales tickets, but defense wins championships. I thought
51:29
Speaker 5: I have heard that, and I've heard that a lot
51:32
Speaker 5: of you because when you look at the final four,
51:34
Speaker 5: which is this is the final four of the college
51:36
Speaker 5: football world. Who are it is? Ohio State, Texas, Penn State,
51:41
Speaker 5: Notre Dame. Actually, Penn State Notre Dame play tomorrow evening
51:44
Speaker 5: at seven thirty, and then on Friday you have the
51:46
Speaker 5: Texas Ohio State matchup. But what was interesting that I
51:49
Speaker 5: came across was that all those teams were ranked among
51:52
Speaker 5: the top eight defenses nationally all season, which is unusual
51:57
Speaker 5: because we've talked about this, don't We feel like it's
51:59
Speaker 5: more the college play is more based on an offensive.
52:01
Speaker 4: Approach a couple of years for sure.
52:04
Speaker 5: So I thought that was pretty interesting. But yeah, so
52:08
Speaker 5: we're looking at the Buckeyes have the top total defense
52:12
Speaker 5: and scoring defense in college sports.
52:14
Speaker 4: So so what matchup are you most excited to to
52:18
Speaker 4: look at?
52:21
Speaker 3: I don't know.
52:21
Speaker 5: I mean I really think him again again, that you've
52:24
Speaker 5: got tomorrow evening's Notre Dame and Penn State, and so
52:28
Speaker 5: that that's uh. I think Penn State they shut down.
52:32
Speaker 5: I think Boise State. And then that's the Orange Bowl
52:35
Speaker 5: because you know how they've tied the big balls into this.
52:37
Speaker 4: It's in Florida, that's yes.
52:39
Speaker 5: And then the buck Eyes in Texas play on Friday,
52:42
Speaker 5: and that's a Cotton Bowl Texas.
52:45
Speaker 3: So weather won't be I see, I'm interested in that
52:47
Speaker 3: one because again, weather won't be a factor necessarily. I
52:50
Speaker 3: think it's going to be a little cooler in Texas,
52:53
Speaker 3: but Texas almost has home foot advantage in a little
52:56
Speaker 3: bit you can make that's be interesting in And like
53:00
Speaker 3: I said, I like how Ohio they bounced back from
53:02
Speaker 3: the Michigan lost earlier, which is always their super Bowl
53:04
Speaker 3: every year that game at least, so I'm in. I'm
53:08
Speaker 3: most inerrated interested in that matchup. Which one Texas and Ohio.
53:12
Speaker 5: Yeah, in Ohio state's dominating, dominating the playoffs.
53:17
Speaker 4: Ohio high on Texas take I want to I just
53:24
Speaker 4: want to make.
53:26
Speaker 3: Yeah in Ohio in Texas don't generally that's not two
53:30
Speaker 3: schools that play a lot of games between one another.
53:33
Speaker 3: Penn State not the game, Notre Dame. They played some games, yes,
53:36
Speaker 3: the who do you think? Who do you think is
53:38
Speaker 3: gonna win that? Penn State Notre Dame. I like it's
53:41
Speaker 3: gonna be tough. I like I like Notre Dame. I
53:43
Speaker 3: like the road that they're on, So I think they'll
53:45
Speaker 3: take that one.
53:47
Speaker 5: If we're looking at the ni O money, we're definitely.
53:50
Speaker 4: Hut there. I was gonna say that. I mean, you
53:56
Speaker 4: gotta go with that.
53:56
Speaker 5: Who got think?
53:58
Speaker 4: Maybe that's why you can basic win the off. Now,
54:03
Speaker 4: if I was gonna make a bet, I'm going on
54:04
Speaker 4: the nil. Who got the most? We got the most?
54:07
Speaker 4: All right, ladies and.
54:08
Speaker 3: Gentlemen, We're gonna get out of here. Anything hollis anything Lisa?
