Speaker 1: Chapter thirty seven, in which it is shown that Phileas
• 0:03
Speaker 1: Fogg gained nothing by his tour around the world unless
• 0:07
Speaker 1: it were happiness. Yes, Phileas Fogg in person. The reader
• 0:17
Speaker 1: will remember that at five minutes passed eight in the evening,
• 0:20
Speaker 1: about five and twenty hours after the arrival of the
• 0:23
Speaker 1: travelers in London, Passepartout had been sent by his master
• 0:27
Speaker 1: to engage the services of the Reverend Samuel Wilson in
• 0:31
Speaker 1: a certain marriage ceremony which was to take place the
• 0:34
Speaker 1: next day. Pass Partout went on his errand enchanted, He
• 0:39
Speaker 1: soon reached the clergyman's house, but found him not at home.
• 0:42
Speaker 1: Pass Partout waited a good twenty minutes, and when he
• 0:45
Speaker 1: left the reverend gentleman it was thirty five minutes past eight.
• 0:49
Speaker 1: But in what a state he was, With his hair
• 0:52
Speaker 1: in disorder and without his hat. He ran along the
• 0:55
Speaker 1: street as never man was seen to run, before, over
• 0:59
Speaker 1: turning passers by rushing over the sidewalk like a water spout.
• 1:04
Speaker 1: In three minutes he was in Savle Row again and
• 1:07
Speaker 1: staggered back into mister Fogg's room. He could not speak.
• 1:12
Speaker 1: What is the matter, asked mister Fogg. Why Master gasped
• 1:18
Speaker 1: past Part two. Marriage impossible, impossible, impossible for tomorrow? Why
• 1:27
Speaker 1: so because tomorrow is Sunday, Monday, replied mister Fogg. No,
• 1:38
Speaker 1: today is Saturday, Saturday. Impossible. Yes, yes, yes, yes, cried
• 1:46
Speaker 1: past part two. You have made a mistake of one day.
• 1:50
Speaker 1: We arrived twenty four hours ahead of time, but there
• 1:54
Speaker 1: are only ten minutes left past Part two had seized
• 1:57
Speaker 1: his master by the collar and was dreagging him along
• 2:00
Speaker 1: with irresistible force. Phileas Fogg thus kidnapped, without having time
• 2:06
Speaker 1: to think, left his house, jumped into a cab, promised
• 2:10
Speaker 1: one hundred pounds to the cabman, and, having run over
• 2:13
Speaker 1: two dogs and overturned five carriages, reached the Reform Club.
• 2:18
Speaker 1: The clock indicated a quarter before nine when he appeared
• 2:22
Speaker 1: in the Great Saloon. Phileas Fogg had accomplished the journey
• 2:26
Speaker 1: round the world in eighty days. Phileas Fogg had won
• 2:31
Speaker 1: his wager of twenty thousand pounds. How was it that
• 2:36
Speaker 1: a man so exact and fastidious could have made this
• 2:39
Speaker 1: error of a day? How came he to think that
• 2:43
Speaker 1: he had arrived in London on Saturday, the twenty first
• 2:46
Speaker 1: day of December, When it was really Friday the twentieth,
• 2:49
Speaker 1: the seventy ninth day only from his departure. The cause
• 2:54
Speaker 1: of the error is very simple. Phileas Fogg had, without
• 2:58
Speaker 1: suspecting it, gained one day on his journey, and this
• 3:02
Speaker 1: merely because he had traveled constantly eastward. He would, on
• 3:06
Speaker 1: the contrary, have lost a day had he gone in
• 3:09
Speaker 1: the opposite direction, that is westward. In journeying eastward, he
• 3:14
Speaker 1: had gone towards the Sun, and the days therefore diminished
• 3:17
Speaker 1: for him as many times four minutes as he crossed
• 3:21
Speaker 1: degrees in this direction. There are three hundred and sixty
• 3:24
Speaker 1: degrees on the circumference of the Earth, and these three
• 3:28
Speaker 1: hundred and sixty degrees, multiplied by four minutes, gives precisely
• 3:33
Speaker 1: twenty four hours. That is the day unconsciously gained. In
• 3:38
Speaker 1: other words, while Phileas Fogg, going eastward, saw the Sun
• 3:42
Speaker 1: pass the meridian eighty times, his friends in London only
• 3:47
Speaker 1: saw it pass the meridian seventy nine times. This is
• 3:51
Speaker 1: why they awaited him at the Reform Club on Saturday
• 3:54
Speaker 1: and not Sunday as mister Fogg thought, and Passepartout's famous
• 3:59
Speaker 1: family Waku, which had always kept London. Time would have
• 4:03
Speaker 1: betrayed this fact if it had marked the days as
• 4:06
Speaker 1: well as the hours and the minutes. Phileas Fogg then
• 4:10
Speaker 1: had won the twenty thousand pounds, but as he had
• 4:13
Speaker 1: spent nearly nineteen thousand on the way, the pecuniary game
• 4:17
Speaker 1: was small. His object was, however, to be victorious, and
• 4:22
Speaker 1: not to win money. He divided the one thousand pounds
• 4:25
Speaker 1: that remained between Passepartout and the unfortunate fix, against whom
• 4:30
Speaker 1: he cherished no grudge. He deducted, however, from Passepartout's share,
• 4:35
Speaker 1: the cost of the gas which had burned in his
• 4:37
Speaker 1: room for nineteen hundred and twenty hours, for the sake
• 4:41
Speaker 1: of regularity. That evening, mister Fogg, as tranquil and phlegmatic
• 4:46
Speaker 1: as ever, said to Aouda, is our marriage still agreeable
• 4:51
Speaker 1: to you? Mister Fogg replied she, it is for me
• 4:56
Speaker 1: to ask that question. You were ruined, but now you
• 5:00
Speaker 1: are rich again. Pardon me, madam, My fortune belongs to you.
• 5:06
Speaker 1: If you had not suggested our marriage, my servant would
• 5:09
Speaker 1: not have gone to the Reverend Samuel Wilson's I should
• 5:12
Speaker 1: not have been apprized of my error, and dear mister Fogg,
• 5:17
Speaker 1: said the young woman, dear Aouda, replied Phileas Fogg. It
• 5:25
Speaker 1: need not be said that the marriage took place forty
• 5:28
Speaker 1: eight hours after and that Passepartout, blowing and dazzling, gave
• 5:33
Speaker 1: the bride away. Had he not saved her? And was
• 5:36
Speaker 1: he not entitled to this honor? The next day, as
• 5:40
Speaker 1: soon as it was light, Passepartout rapped vigorously at his
• 5:44
Speaker 1: master's door. Mister Fogg opened it and asked, what's the matter? Passpartout?
• 5:50
Speaker 1: What is it, sir? Why I've just this instant found
• 5:54
Speaker 1: out what that we might have made the two of
• 6:00
Speaker 1: the world in only seventy eight days. No doubt returned
• 6:05
Speaker 1: mister Fogg by not crossing India. But if I had
• 6:09
Speaker 1: not crossed India, I should not have saved Aouda. She
• 6:12
Speaker 1: would not have been my wife, and mister Fogg quietly
• 6:17
Speaker 1: shut the door. Phileas Fogg had won his wager and
• 6:21
Speaker 1: had made his journey around the world in eighty days.
• 6:25
Speaker 1: To do this, he had employed every means of conveyance steamers, railways, carriages, yachts,
• 6:31
Speaker 1: trading vessels, sledges, elephants. The eccentric gentleman had throughout displayed
• 6:38
Speaker 1: all his marvelous qualities of coolness and exactitude. But what, then,
• 6:43
Speaker 1: what had he really gained by all this trouble? What
• 6:46
Speaker 1: had he brought back from this long and weary journey? Nothing,
• 6:51
Speaker 1: say you, perhaps so, nothing but a charming woman who,
• 6:56
Speaker 1: strange as it may appear, made him the happiest of men. Truly,
• 7:02
Speaker 1: would you not, for less than that make the tour
• 7:05
Speaker 1: around the world? End of chapter and of story.
