- 2:39three or four nine three five five zero zero away, want to welcome to
- 2:43the show. Canock County Commission President Kent Carper, Good morning, sir.
- 2:46How are you? I'm just fine, Dave, good morning, And before
- 2:50we get started, dislike to mention nine to eleven today. Today is a
- 2:54somber day for all first responders. So when you see a first responder,
- 3:00whether it's a Charles, the police officer, a Canall County depinuty, sheriff,
- 3:04a firefighter, a paramedic at nine one one telecommunicator. Remember them.
- 3:09They've risked their lives and they're well being every day to protect us. So
- 3:14nine to eleven is a day we should remember nine of the victims of nine
- 3:17to eleven. That's certainly our first responders who protect us twenty four. So
- 3:23I agree one of very well, said sir, I appreciate us saying that.
- 3:28So two weeks ago today, Commissioner, folks in areas like what's your
- 3:31Creek and several others were being hit with something almost almost like from another world
- 3:37with that epic rainfall that came through that area. The cleanup is continuing and
- 3:40they'll be cleaning up for some time. That was announced last week that the
- 3:44Accounty Commission at the County Commission meeting that more time was being given for those
- 3:47who were impacted by the flooding to have those damaged items picked up. That's
- 3:52been extended down through Friday. Talk about that, well, first of all,
- 3:57why is the Canall County Commission picking up flood debris? Well, no
- 4:00one else will do it. We have to date picked up four hundred tons
- 4:06of debris. That debris would have ended up in the creeks and the streams
- 4:11and the rivers and on private property and illegal dumps. It's much cheaper for
- 4:16taxpayers to clean it up as opposed to let someone throw it over the hill.
- 4:20But it's also flood prevention, you know, if we have another bad
- 4:24flood or another water event, we want that out of there, so we'll
- 4:29try to get reimbursed. The last event we have we did not get reimbursed,
- 4:32But the county Commissioner Wheeler Commissioner Slango and I carefully budget and we have
- 4:39a contingency fund, so we've used up most of it. We've probably incurred
- 4:44now between eighty to one hundred thousand dollars of costs. We've got hundreds of
- 4:49man hours, and I cannot say enough for the county employees who frankly are
- 4:55out there this weekend. They were kind of by themselves with a private contractors
- 5:01picking up his flood debris. Why did we do it over the weekend?
- 5:05Because people have already suffered enough and it's have to sit there in eighty to
- 5:10ninety degree weather with flood debris out in front of their house. And by
- 5:15the way, Dave, I hate to call it flood debris because these are
- 5:18treasures of the folks that flooded. But it just it has to be cleaned
- 5:25up, it has to be taken away, and that's something the county does.
- 5:29We've had a lot of homes damage, a lot of homes destroyed.
- 5:31I can go over the numbers. It's only real important number is when or
- 5:36not will receive a disaster dectoration from the Feds. We did not receive one
- 5:42the last flood event. I still don't understand that this time probably will get
- 5:46it. It's not a panacea, it's not a cure all, but it'll
- 5:50help. So when when, possibly, Commissioner, would we know something about
- 5:56whether we'll get that those funds coming in here or not. If you'd have
- 6:00asked me that five years ago, I could have told you probably within a
- 6:03day or two. Lately, I don't get it from the FEDS. We
- 6:10work with them. I have to work with them, but they set up
- 6:14their own rules and we'll just do what they let us know when we do
- 6:20what they tell us. Basically, they're in charge of the money. So
- 6:24what we operate on is we know exactly how to file the proper paperwork.
- 6:30We've had about I think one hundred and ninety people apply so far, so
- 6:34we're on top of that. We'll get the paperwork in on time. We
- 6:38stay on top of it, and let's just hope. I can't say enough
- 6:42good about Senator Mansion, Senator Capitau, and now our Congressman Miller. They're
- 6:46very supportive of this. So we'll hope we'll get a disaster declaration. And
- 6:50by the way, there's no way that any of this happens about the Governor
- 6:55Jim Justice, and I will have to say this, the roads are open.
- 7:00Governor Justice had bridges fixed, ditches cleared, trash Mood went up there
- 7:04himself. Governor Justice and his team performed brillyantly. So far. Our new
- 7:11Homeland Security Director Sorsa has done a great job, so kudos to him as
- 7:15well. And there have been I'm glad you brought that up. So there
- 7:18are various groups that have answered the call to help out, and I think
- 7:21VOAD was one of them. Of course, that stands for Voluntary Organizations Active
- 7:26in Disasters of West Virginia. Yes, VOAD has traditionally had a very good
- 7:32reputation. There's some concerns lately. We'll look into that, but the Commission
- 7:38is prepared to make direct payments for damage to certain property to VOAD. We're
- 7:46allowed to do that under the law. So we're working with VOAED very closely.
- 7:49They're the only game in town. When you have people loser bridge.
- 7:55The problem with the word bridge is most people assuming to hear the word bridge,
- 7:59it's a yeah. Many of these folks are trapped still trapped have to
- 8:03when I say trap, they can get in and out, but they have
- 8:07to walk through the woods, they have to walk through a creek. So
- 8:09these structures need to be replaced. And of course there's ways to do that.
- 8:15And though adds a key essential ingredient for this. Yeah, and I
- 8:18think that's sometimes what we forget to a commissioner. I know you've got to
- 8:22run, but I think this is something that sometimes we forget. You know,
- 8:24we hear this was the big news a couple of weeks ago, and
- 8:28if it's not right in your yard or in your neighborhood, well life goes
- 8:31on. You start talking about other things. I'm guilty on this show.
- 8:35I haven't talked anything about it in a couple of days. But for these
- 8:37people that are living in that area. As you said, many cases with
- 8:43situations like this being in rural areas where you have to drive ten miles to
- 8:46be able ten miles out of your way to be able to get on the
- 8:48highway to go to work or to go to church or whatever. We have
- 8:52a tendency I think sometimes to forget that seven houses destroyed. I think these
- 8:56were numbers. I saw seven houses destroyed, twenty six suffer major damage,
- 9:00sixty one minor damage, which, Commissioner I, you've ever gone through anything
- 9:03like this? Nothing's minor in this overall about sixty houses impacted. Is that
- 9:07accurate? That's accurate. Twenty two bridges have been destroyed, sixty six homes
- 9:16with minor damage. You know what's minor damage means that means you've got a
- 9:20foot of mudd in your basement or your living room. That's not minor.
- 9:24But that's the terms that they use. Some folks refer to that as nuisance
- 9:28flooding. Trust me, I've been there, I've seen it. I've seen
- 9:31the look in these folks eyes. They're they're suffering, but they're good West
- 9:35Virginians. They're tough, they're resilient, they're working together. One thing I
- 9:41want to mention, and I'm very concerned about. We're seeing slippages on banks
- 9:46that I've never seen before in my twenty five plus years as a county commissioner.
- 9:50So we're looking at that ones Overseas or Grove. We're gonna have the
- 9:54Shaff's department to a fly over. And my last comment is I want to
- 9:58thank CWS Segment who worked his birthday it was attacked by a swarm of yellow
- 10:03jackets, and Rod Johnson for being out there making sure that these people were
- 10:09taken care of despite the fact it was a weekend. There was no weekend
- 10:13from CW. So happy birthday to Chief Segment. I hope he wasn't injured
- 10:18badly in that attack by the yellow jackets. Well, he was slotting around
- 10:24on him and he knocked his watch off, and then he had to go
- 10:26back. He said he wanted to lose a watch over. Its kind of
- 10:31funny. Now it wasn't too funny to time all right, uh kind of
- 10:35commissioner, President King Carper, I appreciate you taking time at your schedule to
- 10:39be here. We'll talk again soon. Thanks lot. It is a nine

- 14:26three five five zero zero. Well to welcome to the show. Now form
- 14:30remember I say former, Remember the West Virginia. How cidelegates, Doug scaff
- 14:33how are you man? Hey, good morning, Thanks for having me,
- 14:37Dave. It sounds weird to say former, it is. You know.
- 14:39I saw some boat the soccer fields on Saturday and they said, what do
- 14:41I call you now? Former for I say, what, former coach?
- 14:45Whatever? You want to call me. How about Doug, It's gonna be
- 14:46done. Let's go with that. So the news came on Friday that you'd
- 14:50be giving up your seat in the in the legislature overall, I mean,
- 14:52it's simple questions. What led to the decision? Doug? Well, you
- 14:56know, a month ago, almost exactly a month ago, I stepped down
- 14:58as minority leader, and and I contemplated just doing everything then, but he
- 15:01had a lot of unfinished business. I wanted to have a transition period.
- 15:03I wanted to help Dell get Sean Hornbuckle, who was going to be coming
- 15:07the new minority leader. And we had a lot of unfinished business. So
- 15:09I took the next thirty days really and you know, pack my office up,
- 15:11do things like that. But I've been thinking about this for a while.
- 15:15I think it's it's it's just time, you know, eleven years eleven
- 15:16years serving the great people of my district. It's been a great run.
- 15:20I enjoyed every moment of it. I've been on both sides. You know,
- 15:22I was there. I was first elected when I think seventies six Democrats
- 15:26twenty four Republicans, and now I'm leaving with ninety ten ratio, ninety Republicans
- 15:33and ten Democrats. Was the number or the disparit I guess the disparity between
- 15:39Republicans Zumocrats. The debt lead into your not at all, Not at all,
- 15:41you know. I mean, I don't get too caught up in the
- 15:43partisan thing Democrat, Republican. When we all worked together, we you know,
- 15:46we passed almost ninety percent of all the bills you know, by latter
- 15:50by bipartisans form. Anyway, So I've specifically left. There's there's no no
- 15:56other reason other than I just I just need to take a break, take
- 15:58a break, step back. Our businesses are rocking at HD Media. We
- 16:02just acquired another newspaper down in Pulaski, Virginia. We're working on that.
- 16:06We were streaming high school football games. We're doing a lot. So the
- 16:08business side of things, we have a lot going on this fall. I
- 16:11have three different kids, three different football teams, three three different basketball teams,
- 16:15three different soccer teams. We've got a lot going on, and I'm
- 16:18looking to just just take a breath over the next thirty days or so and
- 16:21just really focus and spend time with them. Well speaking, I'll get back
- 16:25to your I'm not gonna let you off that easy, but I'll get back
- 16:26to your political career in a moment. That transition was made, you know,
- 16:30now to the sat Sunday Morning paper, now the Saturday morning paper.
- 16:33They didn't hang you over that, so I guess they want not be too
- 16:34upset, you know what with it's surprising, you know that I think the
- 16:37paper is a better product now. We increase the size of the paper.
- 16:41We delayed the press times when we run on Friday nights so we can get
- 16:45even more high school coverage into the Saturday morning paper. Yeah, you know
- 16:48what I talked about doing away with Sunday versus Saturday. Just think about this
- 16:52for a second. Everyone was mad because y'all gonna have a Wu and Marshall
- 16:53coverage in the Sunday paper. What happened these last couple of weeks, Well,
- 16:56we would not have had the WVU game in Sunday's paper because the game
- 17:00was delayed till well after into the wee hours of the night. Marshall game
- 17:03was delayed the last week before the Penn State game wasn't over till even o'clock,
- 17:07so that wouldn't have been in the Sunday paper. Anyways, the Pit
- 17:08game the upcoming week, so I think the decision. I stand by the
- 17:11decision to convert it and have a Saturday Sunday edition come out on Saturday rather
- 17:15than Sunday, because what we did was we enhanced our local high school sports
- 17:18coverage. And the fallout has not been that. I mean, we've had
- 17:21we've lost a few subscribers over but they've been coming back and they've been they've
- 17:23been signing up digitally. But the bottom line is, you know, as
- 17:26you know, the media industry is changing, constantly changing. We're on top
- 17:30of radio radio and you guys a wonderful job. You're streaming sports. It's
- 17:33stream different, it's all different now, it's a different world. The way
- 17:37that you consume media continues to evolve and change and we have to be a
- 17:40part of it. And wow, wow with respect to the traditional people,
- 17:42because I still love reading the print. I still love touching the paper.
- 17:45Everybody does, and it's just a different experience. I'll be I'll be your
- 17:48last subscriber problem. I'll be the last one left because I I keep that
- 17:52Logan banner as long as you chan do the online thing. But but I'm
- 17:56telling you, I just I like a hard copy of the newspaper. Normally
- 17:59I'll have one on a Monday because there's not one on Monday. But normally
- 18:02if the next to my coffee over here, there's a copy. And you
- 18:04know those weekly papers that come out once a week, there was really are
- 18:07I've said this before, those are in those news deserts. You know a
- 18:08lot of places we take for granted being in Charleston or Huntington, the big
- 18:11markets where you get a lot of media, but places like Logan and Boone
- 18:15County and Williamson Pulaski, Virginia. We're in Lebanon, Virginia. Now we're
- 18:18in Grundy, Virginia. So we're continuing to grow and look at those smaller
- 18:21markets. That's where people want their news on local sports. All right,
- 18:25let's get back to a lots of speculation about your future. You're a young
- 18:27guy relatively speaking for political purposes. Anyway, you're a young guy. I
- 18:33have a feeling, Doug, that your public service days aren't over you.
- 18:34You know, I love serving the public. I love It's a calling of
- 18:38mine. I enjoyed since ninth grade. Since ninth grade. I was class
- 18:41president, tenth grade class president. I took a break off eleventh grade.
- 18:45I thought I was gonna be a basketball star, so I played for you
- 18:47know, the Black Eagles, and I was too short, not tall enough.
- 18:49I couldn't shoot, I couldn't run very fast, so that was over.
- 18:52I was student buddy president in twelfth grade. I enjoyed just serving students
- 18:56at that time. Got the WVU, took a couple of years break,
- 18:59got to be a student, enjoyed life, got back in the public service
- 19:02being a student governor, and I ran for student body president and I was
- 19:06really blessed. And people say, why do you love it so much?
- 19:07When I was student body president, w I got a chance to work with
- 19:11legends like Senator Rockefeller, Senator Bird. I got to meet George Bush,
- 19:15President Bush at the time, we got to meet Bill Clinton. I just
- 19:18love service, and you know, the all thing that resonated is when you
- 19:21know you go to bed at night that you tried your best to make a
- 19:23difference in people's lives that would enhance their lives or make them more successful.
- 19:26That's a good feeling. It's just a calling of mine. I love it.
- 19:30I love it. People say, why you're beating your head against the
- 19:33wall, Why do you put so much time away to do that? Because
- 19:36I just love the state, I love the people. I love giving back
- 19:38wherever I am, whether it's in school, whether it's in college, whether
- 19:42it's at the state legislature or in some capacity, I will always be involved
- 19:45in giving back to the people. So continuing on with the speculation, there
- 19:51seems to be a prevalent opinion dog in many political circles that one of two
- 19:56things may happen, or both things may happen. Your continues to rumors that
- 20:00you may be looking at switching parties and perhaps a run for another office,
- 20:04perhaps Secretary of State. Care to address that, we'll all start backwards.
- 20:08The Secretary State Office has always intrigued me as an office, you know,
- 20:11safe, secure elections, business office of the state. You know, I
- 20:15deal a lot with the Secretary States Office, with all the different businesses I
- 20:18have. You know, we're renewing your business licenses and whatnot and make it
- 20:22easier for people to do business in West Virginia. That office has always intrigued
- 20:25me. I always was fascinated by it. Uh yeah, I'm not gonna
- 20:27lie. I've looked at that office. I'll continue to look at that office.
- 20:30I'm gonna take my time, Like I said, just relax, enjoy,
- 20:33you know, next weeks, months, whatever it takes to really just
- 20:36regroup focus. If I give back Secretary State's Office is office that I would
- 20:41consider running for it someday, someday, someday, someday, someday soon,
- 20:45I don't know. Like I said, we have a lot going on with
- 20:47our businesses right now, you know, we have a lot going on with
- 20:49our businesses we have. I got to get the media. I gotta get
- 20:52HD Media. We take care of I love that job. I love being
- 20:56president HD Media. It's a great gig. I love bringing news to people
- 20:59and every every facet possible. You know, And I've always know your next
- 21:03question. I've always been a conservative. I've always been a conservative. You
- 21:04know, let's talk about this for a second. Pro I'm a pro coal,
- 21:10pro business, pro life, pro pro everything guy for my whether GUARDSS.
- 21:15I was registered a Democrat or republic first election as a Republican in Morgantown
- 21:19in Monte County as a delegated that one of my first election as a Republican
- 21:22in Morgantown in Man County as a delegate. Unfortunately I had to lead the
- 21:29state and moved to Pittsburgh, so I couldn't serve and fulfill that term or
- 21:32to go into But the bottom line is this state is a conservative state.
- 21:37For years, it's never changed. We didn't have a big influx of people
- 21:40moving into our state. We didn't have all the registration has changed through the
- 21:42years, but it's those same people that were here. They just changed their
- 21:45party affiliation. So why is that for years people have been pro coal,
- 21:48pro gas, pro energy, pro guns, pro life, but they were
- 21:52registered Democrats. You know, the party of today is not the same as
- 21:56it was then. The national political scene, in my opinion, change that.
- 22:00We just can't relate to the national political scene, that national Democratic Party.
- 22:04You know, you can't defend them. There's no excuse for some of
- 22:07the things they do. And and I you know, quite frankly, times
- 22:11are changing and good leaders. They have to represent the people of their district.
- 22:15They have to represent the people of their state and their views and their
- 22:18values. So all those things that you mentioned, Doug, you know,
- 22:21you talked about pro life or pro call, pro energy, prograd they'll fly
- 22:25in the face of the Democratic Party at least on the national level, national
- 22:30level, but you know here so does not make it. I mean that
- 22:33kind of makes you an outcast or an outlier. You know, in the
- 22:37longest time we had Democrats, we had a good portion, maybe even half,
- 22:40the Democratic Party in West Virginia had all those same views. You see,
- 22:45they had those same as. They were called blue dog Democrats. They
- 22:48were the old fastients. They were the JFK Democrats that you know they they
- 22:52were. They were true and true. They were the Randolph Jennings Democrats.
- 22:55You know, they just don't exist anymore. The national political scene from the
- 22:57Democratic side has changed so much, and I think that's why you saw so
- 23:02much party affiliation change in West Virginia. Do you think that's the big reason.
- 23:06I mean, that's one of the reasons. One reason. Yeah.
- 23:07I mean I get it all the time, Doug. I get text to
- 23:10the show constantly, and I to you know, to be honest with there's
- 23:12a lot of people, but there aren't always thrilled there than going on the
- 23:17Republican Party, myself being one of those. But I get constant text at
- 23:19least through three or four times a week, people saying I used to be
- 23:22registered as a Democrat, the words of Reagan, paraphrasing the party left me.
- 23:29That's right, party left him. I mean, look at this.
- 23:30We have so many senators, delegates, commissioners, we have our current governor,
- 23:34hell even President Trump at one time, I mean everyone. At some
- 23:37point you chase them back to being a Democrat at one time. You know,
- 23:41everybody has seen the values and beliefs change. When you get far right
- 23:45far left, nobody wins. You got to come together. You got to
- 23:48come together, and we're different in West Virginia. And for the longest time,
- 23:51you look at Senator Joe Manchon, For the longest time, it didn't
- 23:53matter what your party affiliation was. But the national political scene has finally caught
- 23:57up to Joe Mansion. Now, of all people, everybody knows he's always
- 24:00on his you know, stands on his own and does this. But however,
- 24:03it's caught up to him. Now can no longer defend the national political
- 24:06scene. Do you think Joe and totally off the record, has nothing to
- 24:08do with you necessarily. I think Joe Manchin runs for Senate or do you
- 24:11can run for president? Or what? Do you think? I think one
- 24:14of those two things do I do? I don't think it'll run for senta
- 24:15because he gets if he runs for Senate, and you know he's a smart
- 24:18guy. Come on, Joe's I think he's a command He's very competitive.
- 24:22He's very competitive. He's not gonna lose whatever he does. He's going to
- 24:25make sure that he has a he has an advantage and a chance to win
- 24:27it. So I think he'll be very calculated. It's frustrating at times.
- 24:30You know, we come from a state form, but it's frustrating. It's
- 24:33frustrating at times. You know, we come from a state that's rare.
- 24:37You know, most Democrats in the state that were registered Democrats, they would
- 24:40not have been a Democrat in any other state. You know, you can't
- 24:42be a pro life, pro gun, pro conservative in other states. That
- 24:47but the people of West Virginia or West Virginian's first that party affiliation. Unfortunately,
- 24:52so many people want to put that label on you. But I'm the
- 24:53same Doug scaff that I've always been. I'm always going to stand up for
- 24:56what I believe in, stand up for being the energy depend you know,
- 25:00here in West Virginia and across the nation and across the world, we have
- 25:03a chance to be a leader in that. And that's different than our national
- 25:06party. Quick text here says, don't your views, Doug, fly in
- 25:11the face of the views of HD Media the editorial. I guess we're referring
- 25:14to the editorial. We just bought three of the most conservative newspapers in the
- 25:18state of Virginia, the Herald Dispatches of very moderate paper we own, the
- 25:22Logan ban Or. So HD media is such a broadturn. We have thirteen
- 25:25different papers that we own, thirteen different personalities, different different personalities, different
- 25:29editorial pages. They're probably referring to the Charleston Gazette mail Listen. I'm not
- 25:33involved in the news room, not involved in the day to day. I'm
- 25:34involved in the business side. The newsrooms are all do their own thing,
- 25:38and I love that. I think the different regions of the state, you
- 25:41have to produce a product that best fits your readership. Here in Charleston.
- 25:45You know, there's a lot more democrats here. It's the most democratic city
- 25:48in the state. The views and opinions expressed or more democratic. You get
- 25:52to Huntington, it's more of a pro business type paper. There's a lot
- 25:55of business and more conservative paper. You go down to Logan and Boom,
- 25:57they're gonna be talking more about coal related issues. You get down in the
- 26:00Williamson, different type of personality. You get down the Grundy, Virginia.
- 26:03Oh my gosh, they're they're they're one of the most conservative areas I've ever
- 26:07been in my state. We didn't go in there and change that paper.
- 26:08We didn't change the views and expressions. We buy these as a business as
- 26:12a business paper product to best represent that district. As a business manager,
- 26:18I'm gonna do whatever it takes to make these papers successful and provide news to
- 26:22the people in that district. Five aty Lie presented a part by Meeks Realty

- 26:30online Meeks dot Us for call three h four four four zero one zero one.
- 26:33I just I like to throw things out that you Doug because you're so
- 26:37easy to talk to, and I'd like to like to get your opinion,
- 26:38And I think, what do you think about the speaking of Huntington, the
- 26:41decision of Huntington mayor Steve Williams round for governor. What do you think?
- 26:44Yeah, that's a big deal on this. Steve's contemplated that for years.
- 26:45He's done a phenomenal job in Huntington. You know, this is his chance.
- 26:49You know, the Republican ticket to that side is pretty full. I
- 26:53think we have our four finalists there. The Democratic side is wide open.
- 26:57I see Steve Williams is a great He's a moderate conservative Democrat. He's one
- 27:00that I was just speaking about. He is one chance that the Democrats have
- 27:06that he gets it. He's a West Virginia Democrat, former house member.
- 27:10I don't know if the National Party, you know, would would would open
- 27:11him with open arms. They wouldn't open their arms to me, that's for
- 27:15sure. You know, I've always budded the party on numerous things. But
- 27:18the bottom line is, you got to be yourself in politics. Politics is
- 27:22local. You got to get to know those people. You got to be
- 27:26out there, whether you're at football games or high school games. W Games,
- 27:29Marshall Games, get to know the people that you represent and as a
- 27:32leader. Same thing with HD Media. That was a great texture that they
- 27:34said here is hey, maybe your views opinion. You're right, maybe they
- 27:37don't always line up with what's printed in one of our thirteen papers. But
- 27:41that's not my job. That's not up to me. It's what our readers
- 27:44want in that area. My job is to be a leader leader of a
- 27:48company to make sure we can print the paper every day, you receive the
- 27:49paper every day, to provide them news and resources. That's what a good
- 27:52leader is. So in politics, a good leader is one who can change,
- 27:57adapt bring people together regardless of their party affiliation, stand up for the
- 28:02people's views they believe in, and make a difference. So interims are going
- 28:07on now. Would your resignation like immediate on Friday or it was on Friday?
- 28:11And I thought it was important to do it before interims because I didn't
- 28:12want to go up during the false pretense and then you know, on Wednesday
- 28:15you sit through some meetings. We need to let the process play out.
- 28:18Uh. I was elected a Democrat. I thought the honorable thing to do
- 28:21was step down as a Democrat not too many people do that. I don't
- 28:23know if anybody's ever done that. You know, most people switch parties for
- 28:26personal gain while they're in office. I thought that was the right thing to
- 28:30do. I think there's there's there's some good candidates out there that will fill
- 28:34my spot and fill the district. To find the best person that will fill
- 28:37that district, it's going to be my guests would be another moderate conservative Democrat
- 28:41to fill that role. You do know that Mike Pushkin is over the state
- 28:45Democratic Party. I've heard that. I've heard that. I think he's been
- 28:48on your show once once or twice. Yeah, you know, he doesn't
- 28:49actually have control. That's the Canal County Democrat. They nominate three people out
- 28:53and goes to fifteen days. Now, will they reach out to you for
- 28:57your input on that? Or I mean just I mean, I mean,
- 29:00is that something that somebody with the Kanaka Candy Group would send you a text
- 29:03or call you and just say, hey, Doug, what do you think
- 29:04you have any input on? Yeah? I mean that's it. You know,
- 29:07I know the district pretty well. I've served in that district for a
- 29:10while. I even served in that district when it was a seven member district.
- 29:12Remember there were seven Democrats in that district covered the whole Canal Valley area
- 29:17pretty much. They want you got to find the right person. You can't
- 29:19just put any Democrat in that role. It has to be the right person
- 29:22that can relate to the people that district. South Charleston is kind of a
- 29:26very conservative modern district. They've had a Republican mayor for as long as I
- 29:30can remember. You have to find the right person in that role, so
- 29:33I think they will. Yeah, I've of course all all for my two
- 29:37cents, you know, because I want to leave that spot in the best
- 29:40hands possible for the people, not only that district, but for Westrin.
- 29:44And I think it's important that you have a good relationship with Speaker Hanshaw and
- 29:47the Republicans in there, because as one of ten, you have to work
- 29:51across the al. You have to put party politics aside to get anything accomplished.
- 29:56I mean there's names out there. I mean look at look you look
- 29:57at the past. There's people like Andrew Bird who served that district well,
- 30:00but in between my tenure, he was great. Look at him. You
- 30:03don't look at him as a as a crazy you know, left Democrat.
- 30:07He was a moderate conservative. I'm making any friends among the Democratic Party here
- 30:11today, Doug, you know that, right? You know what I love.
- 30:12I love friends on both sides of the house. I mean, the
- 30:15bottom line is, you have to be yourself. Okay, you have to
- 30:18be yourself. Yeah, you have to be yourself. It's no it's no
- 30:21secret to far left that didn't like me. It's no secret to far right
- 30:26won't like me. But that's okay because I do what's right for the people
- 30:29of that district. Final thoughts. You're a free agent now, and I
- 30:32know you're concentrating on family life and things with your with your career, with
- 30:36HD media no longer in the house. When can we expect, after you've
- 30:40had a little time on laying on the beach or doing whatever it is you
- 30:42do. I'm kidding about that, when can we expect that there may be
- 30:45some sort of announcement about your future or is it? Do you have a
- 30:48timeline? I'm no, I don't have a timeline. It's great to not
- 30:52be a candidate right now. It's great to just relax and enjoy life and
- 30:56work on focus on your businesses, and focus on your family and friends.
- 31:00I got a lot of great friends on both sides of the al. I
- 31:03mean, the bottom line is, it's not it's never partisan to me.
- 31:04I want to go out. I'll help people they reach out to me.
- 31:07I'll help in the next few months if there's legislators that need to help on
- 31:11either side of the OWL to help move their initiative forward. I'll continue to
- 31:14help with my businesses and stay focused here. I'm going to take the next
- 31:15however long it takes to just sit there reevaluate. One option is not do
- 31:18anything, focus on the businesses, continue to focus on my kids and my
- 31:22family life, and move forward. The bottom line here is I didn't I
- 31:26just resign because I thought it was time and I wanted to give the the
- 31:30group enough time to find a proper replacement because you, as you know,
- 31:34the election seasons coming up. Let everybody get their ducks in a row.
- 31:37All right. I appreciate you being on the show. You're always, You're
- 31:41always. I want to text you on Friday, I said you want to
- 31:45come in? You said, yep. You know. I love the show,
- 31:48Dave. You do a great job. You bring both sides together,
- 31:49you bring different perspectives, and I think that's what makes you, That's what

- 37:04You realize that right, I think you'll do just fine. Welcome back to
- 37:07the show. You are the Parking right Director for the City of Charleston.
- 37:10What do we get going on with Shawn? Oh? Wow? So we
- 37:13are just now starting to wind down a little bit, getting to the end
- 37:16of the summer. So we're finally seeing a little bit of breathing room from
- 37:21all the activities events that we've had this summer. But so right now,
- 37:25we had the opportunity to name one of our trails after a young lady who
- 37:30passed away. She was twenty five years old, had leukemia and she was
- 37:35actually one of our lifeguards years ago. She's an avid trail go where her
- 37:40family is as well. So we had the opportunity to rename one of our
- 37:45trails. Her name was Amanda Trail. Ironically, her last name is actually
- 37:50spelled and I remember that story and I remember thinking, now we're going to
- 37:53name it. It's I guess, not trying to make live the situation obviously,
- 37:57but it's going to be the Amuta Trail trail. Yeah, I guess
- 38:00exactly the amount of trail trail. And we also renamed her that trail after
- 38:06her on National Trail Mixed Day, which was not planned. So that that
- 38:10was pretty cool. Trails, can you have it one time? That's all
- 38:14good though, It's all good stuff. So so yeah, so that was
- 38:17something that I'm good that we were able to do. And we also have
- 38:21the dog swim event that's coming up. I had a text waiting on you
- 38:23when when you got here about about the dog swim yep. So we just
- 38:28had the one over at Canal City. So the next three are going to
- 38:30be at Martin Luther King, North Charleston and Cato. Next week or this
- 38:35week will be the Martin Luther King from six on Friday from six am to
- 38:38eight pm and Saturday from noon to four and then next week we'll be North
- 38:43Charleston same time, and Cato will be from five to seven on Friday and
- 38:47noon to four on Saturday. How do these dogs swims work? I know,
- 38:51dogs in a pool, I get that part, but I mean,
- 38:52but I mean more than that. How does logistically speaking, how does it
- 38:55work? I mean literally, people just come to the pool, they bring
- 38:59their dogs, and they just let their dogs come in and swim. We
- 39:01also have the opportunity to raise money for the Humane Society. So if anybody
- 39:07wants to bring in any dog treats, any dog equipment and toys for the
- 39:12dogs, we greatly appreciate. And what are those again? The dogs win?
- 39:17They are this weekend, next weekend, and the weekend out next three
- 39:22weeks, next three weekends. Okay, at the various places. So what
- 39:24else you got going on? So we got Halloween coming up, So we
- 39:28are in the process of planning our Halloween events. We typically try to have
- 39:31one big citywide event and this year I don't know if I should let the
- 39:36cat out of the bag, but I guess I will go. Well,
- 39:37sure you should. So We're gonna do a haunted trail this year up at
- 39:42Cato. I think it's been done years ago. And we're bringing it back.
- 39:45So that's gonna be on October twenty eighth Saturday, So we're still in
- 39:50the planning process. But then also the community centers will have their own smaller
- 39:54Halloween events that might encompass the trunk or tree or different activities that the kids
- 40:01can participate in, so we're still in the planning stage of those as well.
- 40:07We had a text here about the Vandalia Pool or the Vandalia poill be
- 40:09opening. So the Vandalia Pool is no longer a pool, So we have
- 40:14a community organization that does planting up there, so we fill the pool in
- 40:20and it's now a community guarding for that neighborhood up there. They came to
- 40:23us about a year or so ago and wanted to do something with that pool
- 40:28because that pool was not operational for several years, probably ten or more years.
- 40:31So we've repurposed it. It's a community garden. Okay. One of
- 40:35those things that always amazes me, and again we're talking with Rashaan Poor,
- 40:39who's the director of the Charleston Parks and rector Barbent here on five any Live.
- 40:45One of the things that always amazes me is that there's just always so
- 40:46many things going on. I get at the Charleston's West Virginia's biggest city that's
- 40:51going to happen, but not just in Charleston, but the surrounding areas and
- 40:53the way that you folks and South Charleston and Saint Alban's and Nitro and everybody
- 41:00tries to work together on these events because you just about have to exactly yeah,
- 41:04you don't want to try to overlap. You want to try to get
- 41:07the timing right. So we try to reach out to our you know,
- 41:09sister and brother cities to see what they have going on, and we try
- 41:13to we want to try to do something different as well, so that we
- 41:15can bring different things to the community. I'm excited about this Haunted Trail.
- 41:19I think this is gonna be gonna be a really big deal. And this
- 41:22is the type of things that people, you know, I'm I'm an old
- 41:27guy, and used to be Halloween was one night and it was you know,
- 41:30maybe an occasional haunted house would pop up here and there, but primarily
- 41:32it was you go out with a bag, you beg for candy from six
- 41:36to eight, and then you go home. But now it's all these other
- 41:38things. As you said trunk. You mentioned trunk retreats to everybody. We
- 41:42have our own with with woody woods, you know, and with trick or
- 41:45Beat going on. We have all these different things going on. It's all
- 41:47part of the Halloween is almost becoming like Christmas. Rashaun, It's becoming like
- 41:52a whole month of activity. It really is. It really is the last
- 41:54couple of years. So we try to do different, different big events every
- 41:59year. So the last two years we had the Haunted Halls over at Roosevelt
- 42:02Neighborhood Center, and then last year, which was really creative, we had
- 42:07the Haunted Streets of Safety City. So people got to experience the Safety City.
- 42:10A lot of people aren't familiar with Safety City, but it's where there's
- 42:15a firehouse. People get to learn fire safety there, and there's this little
- 42:19town with these little buildings and there's these little gold carts that kids can ride
- 42:22through, and so we walked the people through the town. Well, that's
- 42:25that's pretty cool stuff. Where can people learn more about all these activities?
- 42:29Because you've hit us with a lot of stuff today from me, So you
- 42:31guys can follow us on our Facebook page, which is Charleston, w V
- 42:36Parks and Recreation, and we also have our website which is get activewv dot
- 42:40com. All right, very good, Well, have you back again soon.
- 42:44I definitely want to have you on to talk about this Haunted Trail thing
- 42:46that you just unveiled to us here. I definitely want to have you on
- 42:49to talk about that and plus plenty more of the activities going on with Halloween
- 42:52as we head into the fall months. Charleston. Absolutely Rashaun Poor, the

- 45:49committee meetings are scheduled now. Over the weekend, they took a tour of
- 45:52the new Herbert Hoover High School and at the Capitol. Right now, they're
- 45:57meeting pretty much wherever they can because the chambers, especially in the sendors in
- 46:00the House, are under going in major renovation. They could always meet at
- 46:05the Governor's mansion, because no one's using that just saying there is a new
- 46:10candidate in the race for State Auditor of West Virginia. House Majority Leader Eric
- 46:15Householder making that announcement on Friday. Marsha Kavlik with the story post at wv

- 46:25Congressman Alex Mooney and officials from the NRA also were there. He was
- 46:30Householder first elected to the House in twenty ten. Delegate Caleb Hannah also has
- 46:36announced he's running for state auditor. The current Auditor J. B. Mccusky
- 46:42originally said he was going to run for governor, but now I was opting
- 46:45instead to run for Attorney General. Senators Mike Stewart and State Senator Mike Stewart
- 46:51and State Senator Ryan Weld also we'll be running for the AGS spot as well.
- 46:55The current A. G. Patrick Morrissey is now running for governor and
- 47:01all day. And I would be remiss if I didn't mention of course today,
- 47:07And I would be remiss if I didn't mention of course today, And
- 47:10I would be remiss if I didn't mention. This is the anniversary of nine
- 47:15to eleven, and commemorations are being planned across the country as well as in
- 47:19West Virginia, and and you know, it's it's become I think one of
- 47:24those where were you type moments in American history and in the discussion, so
- 47:35everybody else does theirs, I will give mine. I was on the air
- 47:38at w VW Radio and Logan uh doing the morning show there when the first
- 47:45strike happened. I was doing mornings and there was no one there for the
- 47:50most part in the early mornings because I started at five thirty am. Got
- 47:54in the building about you know, four thirty. There's somebody there for the
- 47:59most part in the mornings except for myself and UH and the news guy and
- 48:04our general manager, who for some reason came in at five am every morning.
- 48:09But so the office opened it around eight, so you'd start to see
- 48:14administrative staff coming in, followed by salespeople around eight eight thirty or so.
- 48:19And we had a small TV in the sales office, which was just down
- 48:23the hall from where our control room was. So by the time the sales
- 48:25team got there, us morning people were so hyped up on caffeine. We
- 48:30talked to anybody, even salespeople. So I grabbed you had another cup of
- 48:36coffee and headed down the hall to talk to him. And we had the
- 48:38TV on CNN in the office, and I remember when that first, the
- 48:45first announcement came over CNN, and I remember going back into the control room
- 48:50trying to make sense of everything that was going on. Of course, at
- 48:53that time, we had the old not really the old ticker tape thing like
- 48:58you see in the movies, but it was a more modern version of that
- 49:00that you actually fed the paper in, and then the old fashioned printers that
- 49:05printed the Associated Press news and I'm trying to monitor that myself and the news
- 49:08guy there, and I remember putting ABC News Radio on the air at the
- 49:13top of the hour, and like a lot of folks, you know,
- 49:15thinking is this It's the world coming to an end? And you know,
- 49:22I was thirty years old. I did the math. I was thirty years
- 49:24old when nine eleven happened, about to turn thirty one, and during my
- 49:30lifetime up to that point, there really wasn't a where were you type moment
- 49:37in my life. You know, everybody talks about older folks older than I
- 49:40will talk about where they were when John Kennedy was shot, or going back
- 49:45even further when they heard about Pearl Harbor. But other than maybe the Space
- 49:52Shuttle Challenger explosion in January of nineteen eighty six, there had really never been
- 50:00in my life one of those where were you type moments? But this was
- 50:04it for me at that age. And each year as nine to eleven starts
- 50:12to fade a little bit more from memory, and sadly so I think back
- 50:17to the days to September eleventh and the days there after. Chris Lawrence in
- 50:23the Morning News this morning played what is now that famous clip of President George
- 50:30W. Bush saying, if you remember, there were some audio issues as
- 50:34he was trying to speak into a megaphone there, and he said, paraphrasing,
- 50:40the people who knocked down these buildings are soon going to hear from all
- 50:44of us, And of course it got a credible round of applause, followed
- 50:47by Chance of USA USA. Now neither Bush, We're the greatest presidents of
- 50:53the world. But w was the right president in that month and was perfect,
- 51:00in my opinion, in that particular situation. And I just remember the
- 51:05sense of solidarity that the country had at that time. And I've mentioned this
- 51:10before on the show. Have you ever wondered what it would be like if
- 51:17a heaven forbid a nine to eleven type attack, that type of attack were
- 51:23to happen today, Because it was the world was a different place in two
- 51:30thousand and one, and of course it was changed by by the events of
- 51:34nine to eleven. But if it were happening today, you know, former
- 51:36President Trump would release statements about how weak President Biden is and it would have
- 51:40never happened on his watch. President Biden would ramble something totally incoherent and social
- 51:47media, which wasn't really a thing then at least what we know it as
- 51:51now would have exploded. Would blame towards the other side. Social media influencers
- 51:55would weigh in, we've had people doing duck self. He's describing their emotions,
- 52:00etcetera, etcetera. And I'll close with this. I can't take credit
- 52:04for this, but I heard someone say we should never forget September eleventh,
- 52:09but never forget September twelfth and the days thereafter. All right, my thanks
- 52:15to all the guests today, Hollywood, Jeff Petty, our excellent producer,
- 52:19thank you so much. Coming up tomorrow, we a lot of news to
