- 0:12Hello friends. Sean here.
- 0:15I hope you're going well. Thank you for tapping on play.
- 0:17Good to have your company as we are going to continue through
- 0:21the book of Isaiah today. Today we are up to Chapter 42.
- 0:27Chapter 42 is going to spend some time talking about God's
- 0:31chosen servant, and there is just pages and pages and pages
- 0:37of theories as to who the servant is.
- 0:39Is the servant. The nation of Israel is the
- 0:42servant. The Persian king coming down is
- 0:45the servant, the Messiah. Yet to come is the servant King
- 0:49David or Isaiah himself. Everyone has their own opinion,
- 0:53and in the end, commentators encourage you to see who you
- 0:58feel. The servant is not very helpful,
- 1:00is it? And then there will be a
- 1:03beautiful song of praise to God, and then talk of Israel's
- 1:07failure to listen. Yes, it sounds like a familiar
- 1:11theme, but Holy Spirit, open our hearts so that you would
- 1:16communicate freshly to us today with just the words that you
- 1:21need us to hear. All right, friends, it is alive
- 1:31and active, this word of God. Let us read it together.
- 1:34Isaiah chapter 42. Look at my servant whom I
- 1:44strengthen. He is my chosen one who pleases
- 1:48me. I've put my spirit upon him.
- 1:52He will bring justice to the nations.
- 1:55He will not shout or raise his voice in public.
- 1:59He will not crush the weakest Reed or put out a flickering
- 2:02candle. He will bring justice to all who
- 2:06have been wronged. He will not falter or lose heart
- 2:10until justice prevails throughout the earth.
- 2:13Even distant lands beyond the sea will wait for His
- 2:16instruction. God the Lord created the heavens
- 2:21and stretched them out. He created the earth and
- 2:25everything in it. He gives breath to everyone,
- 2:28life to everyone who walks the earth.
- 2:31And it is He who says I, the Lord, have called you to
- 2:36demonstrate my righteousness. I will take you by the hand and
- 2:41guard you, and I will give you to my people Israel, as a symbol
- 2:46of My covenant with them. And you will be a light to guide
- 2:50the nations. You will open the eyes of the
- 2:53blind. He will free the captives from
- 2:56prison, releasing those who sit in dark dungeons.
- 3:01I am the Lord that is my name. I will not give my glory to
- 3:06anyone else, nor share my praise with carved idols.
- 3:11Everything I prophesied has come true.
- 3:14And now I will prophecy again. I will tell you the future
- 3:18before it happens. Sing a new song to the Lord.
- 3:24Sing his praises from the ends of the earth.
- 3:28Sing all you who sail the seas, all you who live in distant
- 3:33coastlands. Join in the chorus you desert
- 3:36towns. Let the villages of Kedar
- 3:40rejoice. Let the peoples of Selah sing
- 3:43for joy. Shout praises from the mountain
- 3:46tops. Let the whole world glorify the
- 3:49Lord. Let it sing His praise.
- 3:53The Lord will March forth like a mighty hero.
- 3:56He will come out like a warrior full of fury.
- 4:01He will shout his battle, cry and crush all his enemies.
- 4:06He will say, I have long been silent.
- 4:10Yes, I have restrained myself, But now, like a woman in labour,
- 4:17I will cry and groan and pant. I will level the mountains and
- 4:22hills and blight all their greenery.
- 4:26I will turn the rivers into dry land and will dry up all the
- 4:31pools. I will lead blind Israel down a
- 4:35new path, guiding them along an unfamiliar way.
- 4:39I will brighten the darkness before them and smooth out the
- 4:43road ahead of them. Yes, I will indeed do these
- 4:47things. I will not forsake them, but
- 4:51those who trust in idols, who say you are our gods, will be
- 4:56turned away in shame. Listen, you who are deaf look
- 5:02and see you blind. Who is as blind as my own
- 5:06people. My servant, who is as deaf as my
- 5:10messenger, who is as blind as my chosen people, the servant of
- 5:16the Lord. You see and recognize what is
- 5:19right, but refuse to act on it. You hear with your ears, but you
- 5:24don't really listen because he is righteous.
- 5:28The Lord has exalted his glorious law, but his own people
- 5:32have been robbed and plundered and slaved, imprisoned and
- 5:36trapped. They are fair game for anyone
- 5:40and have no one to protect them, no one to take them back home.
- 5:45Who will hear these lessons from the past and see the ruin that
- 5:49awaits you in the future? Who allowed Israel to be robbed
- 5:54and hurt? It was the Lord against whom we
- 5:57sinned, for the people would not walk in his path, nor would they
- 6:03obey His law. Therefore he poured out his fury
- 6:08on them and destroyed them in battle.
- 6:11They were enveloped in flames, but they still refused to
- 6:16understand. They were consumed by fire.
- 6:23But they did not learn their lesson.
- 6:32Lord, often our part in your story can feel a little
- 6:36overwhelming, a little confusing and unclear as we cast our eyes
- 6:42across the enormity of you and your mission.
- 6:48When it all feels too hard, Lord, just help draw our focus
- 6:53to that very next step in obedience to you.
- 6:57That's all you ask us to do, is take that next step in obedience
- 7:02to you. So as we take these simple steps
- 7:07each moment of today, Lord, I pray for your confidence.
- 7:11I pray for your compassion that as we live our lives today, we
- 7:17would do that as your servant, bringing your Kingdom here in
- 7:23the world just as you want it to be.
- 7:27Thank you that you actually care about this world, that you, this
- 7:33incredibly almighty God, has your heart set on loving and
- 7:39drawing this world back into your embrace.
- 7:45Thank you and we pray all of these things in the name of
- 7:48Jesus. Amen.
