- 0:17Music. Good evening, everyone, and
- 0:22welcome back to the Easy Double Podcast episode 12, joined by
- 0:26Dean Menzies on this fan Monday evening.
- 0:30How are you doing, Dean? Good.
- 0:31Thanks, Mike. Yeah, Monday night doing well.
- 0:34How are you? Yeah, not so bad.
- 0:36Pretty tired to be honest. Bit of a chaosic weekend, but
- 0:40we'll get into that later on. Have you been in the office
- 0:43today? Yeah, I was in the office today.
- 0:46Pretty bit more laid back weekend by the sounds for me.
- 0:49So it was sort of some Mother's Day bits and pieces, but sort of
- 0:54just, yeah, bit more time spent at home, which was nice.
- 0:57It was good. Yeah, it was Mother's Day,
- 0:59wasn't it? Because obviously I'm still
- 1:02sticking to the traditional UK timings of Mother's Day, so
- 1:05they'd tax my mum, Happy Australian Mother's Day, but
- 1:09we'd already celebrated. I can't remember when, it was
- 1:12maybe a month or so ago. So did you get up to anything in
- 1:15particular for that? We saw House's parents on
- 1:19Saturday and then the the 20th sort of their first week at
- 1:25school. So they did a bit of Mother's
- 1:27Day craft and Aurora I think had a Mother's Day morning tea on
- 1:32the Friday. But we all sort of they had
- 1:34their bits and pieces that they'd made for mum and I topped
- 1:37it up with some bits and pieces. And so we just did that with
- 1:41some, some food on on Sunday. But yeah, it was pretty, pretty
- 1:48low key Sunday, which was nice. Went to the park and hung out
- 1:51together was good. Very nice.
- 1:53I think we were just chatting off there about potentially
- 1:56struggling for context. We were like, shit, what?
- 1:59What results has there been? What's been going on this past
- 2:02weekend? But we literally couldn't come
- 2:04up with anything, could we? So if if people are aware of any
- 2:08major results, you'll have to let us know.
- 2:09But yeah, the running news is quite like this week.
- 2:13Yeah, I think the only racing I saw some highlights of with
- 2:17those relay champion, you know, there was like those relay
- 2:20events that Australia seemed to do well up and we're talking 4
- 2:23by 104 by 400. So not really the sort of thing
- 2:27that typically gets us excited outside of the major
- 2:29championship, I would say. Actually, now you say, I did see
- 2:33something about that. It's a shame that Owen isn't
- 2:36here some sure the article that I seen was alluding to the fact
- 2:40that Ireland had missed out or something and may stand
- 2:43corrected. But yeah, he's he's not here to
- 2:45defend this nation, unfortunately.
- 2:47But it looks like they might have missed out.
- 2:49So it was qualifying for the world champs I think, wasn't it?
- 2:51Yeah, yeah. And I think the the Aussies got
- 2:54through in most of them, like I think most of them mixed, maybe
- 2:58all of them mixed 4 by fours. And then I think maybe it's
- 3:01either the men's or women's missed out and one of them.
- 3:03But but yeah, it looked like from the articles I saw some
- 3:07headlines of that the Aussies did pretty well, which is cool.
- 3:10Oh yeah, just looking now. So in the mixed 4 by 1, if it
- 3:14was 3 to qualify, well must have been for at least 4 to qualify
- 3:18because Australia were fourth in that.
- 3:21So there was Canada, Jamaica, Britain, Australia, Italy in the
- 3:25four by one mixed. And then in the 4x4 mixed was
- 3:31the US, Australia, Kenya, Britain and South Africa.
- 3:35So yeah, just looking at Australia's team there, there's
- 3:38some familiar names, but also some names that don't mean too
- 3:41much to me. So must have been some
- 3:44opportunities for a few people to get like their first vest and
- 3:47stuff there, which is good stuff.
- 3:49Yeah, probably talks pretty well to Australia's depth at the
- 3:52minute, which is good in terms of because I don't think like
- 3:56Gout, Gout was perhaps running. There's a few others that I
- 3:59don't know if they're lucky Kennedy was running.
- 4:00Like if those guys aren't running but they're still relay
- 4:03team still doing well, that's pretty cool.
- 4:05Yeah. And then also to just how,
- 4:06although this week was very light, but in general right now
- 4:10the schedule is just chaotic, isn't it?
- 4:12So like people will will be finding that they they have to
- 4:15start saying no to things and they can't do everything.
- 4:18So it gives gives a lot of other people an opportunity which is
- 4:21good. Probably on the topic of the
- 4:23world champs, not that there were results, but the I think
- 4:26the Australian marathon team was announced.
- 4:30Did you say that for the world champs?
- 4:32I I did so do you want a software?
- 4:34Yeah, maybe just briefly. I mean, it's the only real news
- 4:37sort of athletics that I caught a glimpse of.
- 4:39But I think in the in the men's it was Andy Buchanan, Liam
- 4:45Boudin and Tim Vincent. Yeah, so the two guys from
- 4:50Brisbane and and Andy, I think Andy's already said he's he came
- 4:55to race, which is cool because I think the around the same time
- 4:59is the the Sydney Marathon. So I think a few people are sort
- 5:04of you go to Sydney's the first time it's going to be a major
- 5:07and there's a lot of Australian athlete incentives for them to
- 5:11race there. But yeah, it'd be interesting to
- 5:13see if those guys go. I think it said like maybe Liam
- 5:16Burden's maybe not auto selected.
- 5:19Maybe there's like a maybe there's like a roll down process
- 5:21is maybe it's in the quota because they normally select
- 5:24because I think of the three on the Andes to run the auto
- 5:27standard, which was like 2/06/30, which is sort of fast.
- 5:31And then the other guys have run I think 2:09 and 2:10.
- 5:34So I suspect they're probably inside the quarter.
- 5:38But it's maybe a big conditional on when the window perhaps
- 5:42closes. I'm not sure.
- 5:44But I did see an Asterix I think next to his name.
- 5:46I think as well you're touching on obviously potentially A
- 5:50slight clashing agenda with people doing Sydney Marathon.
- 5:53I'm sure ahead. Is he saying a few weeks ago
- 5:58that she was weighing up doing Sydney as well?
- 6:01She definitely was weighing up well Sydney, but I wouldn't be
- 6:05surprised if knowing her that she chooses to do both anyway
- 6:09and she's gone. She's going to Europe, isn't she
- 6:11to pursue a track season. So incredible year of like just
- 6:16race after race and just getting involved with everything
- 6:20continues. And what would add to that is
- 6:24she's quite commercially minded as well, isn't she?
- 6:26So although she'd want the prestige of running in the world
- 6:30Champs, I think she'd she'd see the benefit of running Sydney as
- 6:34well. Yeah, exactly.
- 6:36I think it's really hard. I was listening to, you know,
- 6:39the four guys, you know, from it's like paywalled, but they
- 6:44Brett and Ryan Gregson sort of chat on a podcast through for
- 6:50the kudos and they were talking about what the funding situation
- 6:53is with AA for like a lot of the marathoners.
- 6:56And I think they said that no, no Australian marathoner other
- 6:59than Jess Stenson is getting any sort of financial support at the
- 7:03minute, which is, you know, a bit sad, but sort of where
- 7:08things are at. So if you're so there's just a
- 7:10reality that if you want to try and make marathoning your, you
- 7:13know, a more full time venture that you that's a real
- 7:17opportunity cost of turning down some substantial appearance fees
- 7:21and race prize money for these major championships.
- 7:24Because you don't get, I doubt you get anything unless you're
- 7:28finishing really high up in the world champs and finishing in
- 7:31the top ten in there. It's really hard.
- 7:32So yeah, it's a really tricky spot on.
- 7:35I'm sure you want to race for your country, but at the same
- 7:37time you probably need to make a living to keep doing what you
- 7:40want to do so. Well, that lends itself to that
- 7:44story. I don't know if we spoke about
- 7:45it on the part or in training when Ben Connor, the British
- 7:50guy, turned down the opportunity to run the European Road Running
- 7:54Championships because it would have had to been self funded.
- 7:58And I think he explained it was going to cost.
- 8:00I mean, doesn't really matter how much it was going to cost
- 8:02him because the fact it's costing him anything in the 1st
- 8:06place is the story. But I think it was about 1000 LB
- 8:10maybe to go and represent Great Britain basically.
- 8:14And he was kind of just making a stance there as if to say, this
- 8:17is obviously for for myself, but also for athletes further down
- 8:22the line, future generations as well.
- 8:24Like if this is one of the opportunities that potentially
- 8:27like young people and those getting their first Great
- 8:30Britain vest could be presented with.
- 8:33So even more so the case for a not so established athlete, if
- 8:37you like to ask them to cover their own costs is a little bit
- 8:40outrageous. And people were saying like the
- 8:44brands should cover it. So like the athlete sponsor, but
- 8:48not necessarily are they going to have a sponsorship deal.
- 8:51So it should come from the the governing body like British
- 8:54Athletics in that instance. All these kind of races to fund
- 8:59athletes to go and represent the country should be in their
- 9:02budget for the year. Like they should obviously plan
- 9:04for these things. So they have a sorry state of
- 9:07affairs, really. Yeah, yeah, it's sad state of
- 9:10affairs. I should mention the other two
- 9:12athletes that were selected on the women's side were Leanne
- 9:16Pompiani and Vanessa Wilson. So I think Vanessa and Liam I
- 9:21think have been selected by a A, but they sort of, it's based on
- 9:25I think quite a roll down. So I think there needs to be a,
- 9:29the spots sort of need to open up for them based on the quote
- 9:32quota. So there's a limit, a cap on the
- 9:34number of people that can participate in the field.
- 9:37I think for the marathon, it used to be closer to 100 and and
- 9:40now if it's closer to 60, like they've reduced the field size
- 9:44for the marathon and then it's always capped at 3 per country.
- 9:48So it's the article that I'm looking at rates like the that
- 9:53those two athletes are waiting for for roll down before they
- 9:56get selected. So perhaps the periods ended and
- 10:00it's just based on a nomination and selection process, because I
- 10:03suppose that was a knock on a A some years ago, people would
- 10:08make the qualifying standard but wouldn't get selected, which is
- 10:12really disappointing. Whereas now it seems like a, A
- 10:15selectors at least are sort of doing their bit by selecting
- 10:18and, you know, selecting full teams and sending full teams,
- 10:21which is really good because I know like British Athletics and
- 10:24even New Zealand athletics, A guy that I've met a few times
- 10:29through, through some of these marathons, Caden Shields, he
- 10:32runs for New Zealand and he's sort of run some of these.
- 10:35I think he ran 212 recently. Is that the guy who moves his
- 10:40coaching? Yeah, yeah.
- 10:42So he was at the World Champs in Doha 2019, but I met him 2023 in
- 10:47Osaka and 2023 at the Gold Coast Marathon.
- 10:50He ran both of those marathons. I'm sort of chatting to him
- 10:53because he's sort of trying to run standards to get selected by
- 10:57New Zealand, New Zealand Athletics.
- 10:59I think he was in the quarter in 2023.
- 11:01I can't remember if this was it's probably Budapest world
- 11:04champs, but New Zealand Athletics I think had I think he
- 11:08knew he would nominate but be unsuccessful.
- 11:11They sort of wouldn't send unless I don't know if it's like
- 11:13podium particular. There's some real strict
- 11:15criteria that some countries have.
- 11:17So even though you're sort of which is just ridiculous, like
- 11:20you sort of World Athletics has created this point system.
- 11:24So that's so World Athletics sort of lifted the standards
- 11:27such that the auto qualifying times became really difficult to
- 11:30make. And that sort of meant that
- 11:31fields wouldn't get filled just by running the standard like
- 11:34they did Once Upon a time. And then you had these point
- 11:37system and the the beauty of the point system was it encouraged
- 11:40people to race like their area championships.
- 11:42So say, that's why Kaden rented went and raced Gold Coast
- 11:45because Gold Coast was Oceania champs and it had a heap of
- 11:48bonus points to help him in the in his quest to sort of get the
- 11:52points to be inside the World Athletics quota for the say, the
- 11:56top 60 ranked marathoners capped at three, you know, 3 per
- 12:01country. And so he sort of sat within
- 12:04that quota, but I think didn't get selected.
- 12:06And I know similar stories like when I think Moose ran to 14 for
- 12:10that Doha. I think Nikhil ran at the same
- 12:13time as him, but was running for British Athletics.
- 12:15And I think sort of knew that maybe he wouldn't be a chance to
- 12:18get selected because of the way British athletics were when it
- 12:21came to collecting athletes at the time.
- 12:23And Australia did used to be like that Once Upon a time, but
- 12:25it really seemingly moved away from it, which is really good.
- 12:28It's so bad, isn't it? Like, okay, fair enough, you
- 12:31want your athletes to do as well as they can, but like, how do
- 12:35you expect people to even get to be in a position to be trying to
- 12:38podium if they're if they're not being given the experience in
- 12:42the first place? Yeah, and like knocking that,
- 12:45knocking people out who have met the qualifying criteria when
- 12:48they're not even getting any money from you as the
- 12:51administrative body to begin with.
- 12:54Yes, it's sad side of where the sport's at, which is why sort of
- 12:57when you hear people racing say like choosing Sydney over it,
- 13:01you can sort of understand it because you're trying to fund
- 13:04yourself because the funding and support is not coming from
- 13:06anywhere else. When you compare it to other
- 13:09sports, like very rarely the people come from nowhere to be
- 13:13world class instantaneously. Like whether that be if you
- 13:17compare it to a team or like individuals, often it's like a
- 13:21journey, isn't it? And it takes years and years and
- 13:23years to kind of reach the highest level.
- 13:25So when you compare that to not being selected even though you
- 13:29can in the quota, but OK, you're not going to podium.
- 13:32It's just ridiculous, isn't it? You need a start and point.
- 13:35You need a base to work. From yeah, I doubt you just go
- 13:39straight from, you know, running your local fun run to winning a
- 13:42gold medal. OK, like Connor Manse has been
- 13:45very vocal and in the lead UPS of Boston wasn't either.
- 13:48He's basically saying now that if you want to be a major
- 13:51winner, then you have to start podium in for a while first and
- 13:55kind of put yourself in that position.
- 13:57And what's he been doing in the lead up to now is he's been
- 14:01finishing in the top ten and stuff.
- 14:03So it's it's a journey isn't it? Like you're not just going to
- 14:06enter a major and then win it. Yeah, yeah, short sighted.
- 14:10Anyway, there's there's the actually just before we move,
- 14:15move on from that, is that going to be him Vincents first vest or
- 14:20has he represents in Australia before?
- 14:22I think he, I recall him representing Australia at the
- 14:26world half marathon champ that would have been in 2023.
- 14:32So he's probably, I don't know if he's been on world cross team
- 14:36and stuff like that, but yeah. The first time a world champs in
- 14:41terms of like running the marathon or he hasn't been for
- 14:46the Olympics either. Yeah, I think I was, yeah, at
- 14:50the Gold Coast Marathon when I think, I think he debuted in
- 14:532023. So I think he's only pretty new
- 14:55to the marathon. And same for Liam Bouden.
- 14:57I think Liam Bouden's debut was at the Gold Coast the year
- 15:00later, 2024. So he's a lot younger guys that
- 15:03have that have both run fast over the half marathon that
- 15:07yeah, have converted their fast halves to fast marathons.
- 15:11Yeah. So big opportunities there.
- 15:13And I've just looked as well at the temperature in Tokyo in
- 15:16September because it just came to me because I know they do get
- 15:20really, really hot summers, don't they?
- 15:22And I think their summer is kind of usually that July, August
- 15:25time. So according to this, typical
- 15:30highs range can range from 26 to 28 in the daytime with
- 15:34occasional peaks of 32. So it sounds like it could be a
- 15:38warm one, which makes for interest in racing, doesn't it
- 15:41doesn't necessarily just mean that the fastest guy is going to
- 15:44win. So yeah, that should be
- 15:45something to look forward to the different dynamic.
- 15:48So shall we talk about the training that we've done this
- 15:51week because on the back of last week, hopefully it's we're going
- 15:54to have more to speak about and we've actually done some running
- 15:58this week and you can take us away first if you'd like.
- 16:01Yeah, yeah, can do. Yeah.
- 16:03So yeah, I think I'd run 20 KS I think the week before.
- 16:06So this week there's an improvement.
- 16:08So yeah, on Monday, just 2 easy easy runs.
- 16:16I was trying to work out where I was running from Monday morning.
- 16:19I remember school drop off, so 21st day of school then ran to
- 16:22the office and then yeah, ran home from the office.
- 16:26So just two easy runs on Monday. Trying to you're already before
- 16:34you before you get to like any of your sessions and stuff.
- 16:37I wanted to, if you go back to last week, you'd had like a bit
- 16:41of illness and stuff, hadn't you?
- 16:42And obviously you've done like barely any running.
- 16:45So what, what's kind of your mindset going into this week?
- 16:48What were you hoping for from it?
- 16:51Just to sort of take it a bit day-to-day.
- 16:53So I think my quads were still pretty a bit sore when I did go
- 16:58for a couple of jogs. I sort of, we'd had sort of
- 17:01gastro go through the house. So gastro is generally not too
- 17:04bad in terms of like, I mean, it's terrible when you've got
- 17:07it, but it's not too bad after, you know, once you're well.
- 17:10So. So yeah, I just sort of, I
- 17:13remember doing those jogs on Monday, just saw a bit of a dull
- 17:16ache in the quads. And then it was really just, you
- 17:19know, chatted to raft and we thought maybe I'd do a session
- 17:22on Thursday if I feel up to it. But I sort of just taking it
- 17:25each day and just seeing how I felt.
- 17:28I sort of jogged to and from work, so I was going to do that
- 17:31all being well, regardless of whether or not I did a session.
- 17:34But it was just more, hey, we're how do my legs feel?
- 17:37And the hope of the week was to maybe just return to some sort
- 17:41of training if I felt up to it. But if I didn't like, it's no
- 17:44big deal. If I miss a run, it's no big
- 17:45deal. It's sort of, yeah, I'm sort of,
- 17:48we'll we'll train if I can, but I sort of won't, won't force
- 17:51things like let's say if you're at the back end of a block, you
- 17:53want to tick all your boxes and ignore some discomfort.
- 17:57If I was feeling a bit off, I just wouldn't do as much.
- 17:59So that was sort of the mindset. And so, yeah, Monday just to jog
- 18:05Tuesday yet Tuesday just your regular commutes to from the
- 18:10office. So nothing super special there
- 18:14again, I think. So they still weren't fantastic.
- 18:20I think this is what, 10 days after the marathon?
- 18:22They certainly weren't feeling amazing.
- 18:26But then on Wednesday, I worked from home on on Wednesday, put
- 18:31on a faster pair of shoes. I can't remember what I put on.
- 18:33I put on something a bit snappier, some probably with a
- 18:36plate in it and did a run and sort of started picking it up.
- 18:40That was like a little bit under an hour, an average 4 minute K
- 18:43pace. So I don't know if it was quite
- 18:45a steady run, but I was sort of got going and I just thought I'd
- 18:48see how my legs felt and actually didn't feel too bad.
- 18:51So I was like, oh, here we go. Like maybe I'm starting to turn
- 18:53the corner, which is good. And then so that was at lunch
- 18:58and then that night I got out just for an easy half hour.
- 19:02Had to nip to the shop to get a couple of bits and pieces so I
- 19:04threw a backpack on and did a jog on my way.
- 19:08Do you think alluding to how your legs were like that heavy
- 19:13and dull and stuff Monday, Tuesday still, that kind of
- 19:16shows the danger of jumping back into training a little bit too
- 19:20quickly, doesn't it? Because the fact that you're, I
- 19:23mean, in general, you're very well conditioned, like you're
- 19:27blocked. You, you run like incredibly
- 19:29high mileage and stuff for a long time.
- 19:31And then it shows that ten days after the race, your legs still
- 19:35aren't backed together in one piece.
- 19:38But you can kind of sometimes miss that sense in the week, the
- 19:43week after Kanye. And you can think you're OK
- 19:45because you've had three or four days easy.
- 19:48Then you jump into a workout and then all of a sudden you you're
- 19:51feeling worse than you were beforehand.
- 19:54Yeah, for sure. Like, yeah, I think it's, yeah,
- 19:56it's definitely individual. Like I like I've felt better and
- 20:00worse after different marathon blocks, but certainly after this
- 20:03one, like everything. And I know I've had some like
- 20:06hamstring. Issues in the past, sort of
- 20:09getting back into faster workouts soon after a marathon.
- 20:11But like, normally it's my quads and my quads felt pretty trashed
- 20:15after Ballarat, so it was really just waiting until they started
- 20:19to feel good. It's sort of been a bit of the
- 20:21waiting game. Everything else seems like it
- 20:24feels OK. But yeah, the problem is you're
- 20:26pretty fresh, like because you sort of freshen up a lot, you
- 20:31feel that freshness. And so you can, you sort of, and
- 20:34you haven't ripped something in a while.
- 20:35So there's definitely a temptation to want to get stuck
- 20:38in. But you sort of just, I don't
- 20:39know, got to give your body two or three weeks if you feel like
- 20:42you need it before you sort of get too carried away.
- 20:45So I remember last year after Gold Coast, I don't, I felt like
- 20:50I had a really good kind of like recovery afterwards because I'd
- 20:54done nothing on the Sunday, nothing on the Monday.
- 20:57I think swam Tuesday, cross trained Wednesday and then was
- 21:01running again Thursday. And then I remember I'd done
- 21:04park run on the Saturday and I went down with the intention of
- 21:08just like kind of jogging around and being so sure because few of
- 21:11the lads I'd trained with were there.
- 21:13And then because like you say, I felt so fresh.
- 21:17But because I hadn't done too much in that week, I ended up
- 21:21running like it really progressive.
- 21:23And the last couple of K was like almost flat out.
- 21:26And then afterwards and the next day I was like, I'm just back to
- 21:30square one. Like I feel awful again because
- 21:32you just can't handle that load. Well, I couldn't handle that
- 21:36load at the time. So we'll get to this with my
- 21:39training week. But that's why I'm glad that
- 21:42it's kind of been such a soft and slow approach in terms of
- 21:45getting back to it this time. Yeah, I think getting stuck in,
- 21:48you know, you often can do more harm than than good getting
- 21:52stuck in straight straight away. Right.
- 21:54So I was actually just trying to toggle back to you as you were
- 21:59talking through what you did. Reminded me of like 2023.
- 22:02I think I'd taken like done nothing for a week and then I
- 22:06just eased back into a session maybe the second week after what
- 22:10I was doing. And then the following Sunday or
- 22:13maybe I had two light weeks of jogging, got down to the track
- 22:16for the first time, which would be like us tomorrow night.
- 22:19And then the next day after doing this big track session and
- 22:21just, you know, just sort of getting back into it.
- 22:24I they released like all the some prize money for Perth and
- 22:27then by that Sunday I decided to do a marathon.
- 22:30So you never know what what's on the hook.
- 22:34So is is that a hint that you might be running a marathon on
- 22:37the? Weekend.
- 22:38I hope not, but you know you do some strange things from today.
- 22:42You know, there's no, because you can, there's multiple,
- 22:46multiple options, isn't there multiple ways to come back from
- 22:49a marathon? But for now, I think I'm just
- 22:51trying to get back into some training.
- 22:53At least that was my my thinking last week.
- 22:55That's the the accountancy talk, isn't it?
- 22:58Not into certainty. That's it.
- 23:00No, don't talk in absolutes. Rarely.
- 23:02And, and now that you're on a podcast and everything's
- 23:05recorded and people can call you out on it even more.
- 23:09So that's right. Never say never.
- 23:12Never say never, but yeah, so Thursday ran into the office and
- 23:17Thursday night jogged down to Lake Munger and there was a
- 23:22session was the Monofart Lake. So, yeah, there's a couple of
- 23:28guys there, Max and Tom Cross, They were both there and I think
- 23:36they had an idea of what sort of places they wanted to do.
- 23:39And RAF is on the bike. So we sort of rolled round
- 23:43together and did a did a monitor together.
- 23:47I was sort of at the back, at least for the first bit just to
- 23:50make sure that I wasn't going to injure myself and or you know,
- 23:54overage early sort of with that monitor that can sort of sting a
- 23:58bit. And the, you know, when once,
- 24:00you know, if you've gone too hard because those 32nd efforts,
- 24:03you're sort of not getting that change of pace that you want to
- 24:05get. But yeah, things felt, things
- 24:09felt all right. Actually, I didn't feel it was a
- 24:10beautiful night, sort of lakeside.
- 24:13Like it was very still sort of this recently hot during the
- 24:18day. We've had this lovely run of
- 24:20weather. But like, yeah, just a cracking
- 24:22night. And so, yeah, I felt pretty good
- 24:25getting around the track, getting around the level.
- 24:27How you've feeling at the prospect of doing a monitor on
- 24:30that Thursday? Because that's obviously very
- 24:32comparable to every other time you've done it, isn't it?
- 24:36Are you kind of like going into it thinking, well, I completely
- 24:40don't care kind of what distance I get from this and what paces
- 24:44I'm splitting or you kind of thinking, shit, I'm just on the
- 24:48back of a marathon, like I'm supposedly very fit.
- 24:51I would like to see this come out like quite favourably in in
- 24:55terms of other. Ones I didn't know it was going
- 24:58to be a modern until I got there.
- 24:59Like I didn't know what the workout was.
- 25:01And then when I heard it was a modern, I was a bit annoyed
- 25:04because I didn't want to get too carried away because it's, it's
- 25:07not the point. The point was more just to get
- 25:09down and do something. The point's not to get injured.
- 25:12So I was keen not to go too hard.
- 25:15But then the nice thing is if you have a couple of people that
- 25:18are prepared to chop out reps and sort of push you along and
- 25:22it's like so much more enjoyable than knocking it out by
- 25:25yourself. So once by the time I got there
- 25:27warmed up, I felt fine in my life strides and stuff.
- 25:30I thought I'll go with the guys and see what it was, but I
- 25:32didn't really have a time in mind.
- 25:34I just thought we'd do the ONS around 3 minutes and the floats
- 25:38around 3:20 so that would come out at whatever it came out at,
- 25:42but I sort of didn't. We ended up running a bit
- 25:44quicker than that, which was surprising.
- 25:48But yeah, that wasn't the point. And I normally find to be
- 25:50honest, I normally don't get too excited until maybe 8 weeks
- 25:53after a marathon. I find so like, I don't think
- 25:56I'll be, I don't think I'll be fully fit for another six weeks
- 26:00to be honest. So I'm not really, I don't
- 26:03really care about what my workouts are right now.
- 26:06And if they're good, then that's, that's great.
- 26:08That's I'm fitter than what I thought I would be.
- 26:10But I don't really, I'm sort of, yeah, if I'm to pick a race or
- 26:14something to probably train for, then I'd want to pick it for at
- 26:17least 8 weeks, maybe 10 weeks from now.
- 26:19So I'm sort of just more just at least these next couple of
- 26:22weeks. I just want to tick off some
- 26:23boxes of training. I mean, maybe there's some local
- 26:25races that you know, you get tempted to doing, but I
- 26:28certainly won't be doing them on the basis and I'm trying to
- 26:31produce produced my best optimal result I suppose is in, in terms
- 26:36of my own personal performance, you know.
- 26:38Did you see, you know, RAF done a reel from that session, didn't
- 26:41he? Yeah, yeah.
- 26:44Yeah. Did you see Jordan Donnelly
- 26:46commented on it and asked him, well, he just put Millimo
- 26:50question mark and I feel like it was a little bit of a loaded
- 26:54question as if to say like are you getting them working too
- 26:57hard for an inverted commas threshold?
- 27:00Yeah. Do you reckon that's what was
- 27:02being asked there? Yeah, and I've just gone back to
- 27:04it now because I wanted to, didn't want to miss quotes.
- 27:08And I've seen that Tommy Crafts has replied saying no .1 for me,
- 27:137.5 for the. Other two he's a dickhead given
- 27:21given we didn't finish together, I don't know if his was quite
- 27:24nought .1 so he was audibly complaining at my floats.
- 27:31He didn't. Yeah, it was floating a bit
- 27:33quicker than what it had in Training Peaks.
- 27:36And the rest of the marathon fitness.
- 27:38Yeah, yeah. I don't find, I generally find
- 27:41I've lost a bit of fitness at this point.
- 27:42You sort of had two weeks of tapering and then a couple weeks
- 27:45of not doing a lot. So but yeah, the model was good
- 27:48and my legs didn't feel too bad, which is which is a positive.
- 27:52But yeah, hopefully onwards and upwards.
- 27:55I was going to ask you about this when it comes to my week
- 27:58because it was something I was asking myself, but you've just
- 28:01kind of touched on it there. Do you think that during this
- 28:04week you have lost? Not during this week.
- 28:08So like by now you have lost a fair bit of fitness.
- 28:12And is that obviously it's physically, but is a lot of it
- 28:15mentally you think as well because you've kind of the race
- 28:18is out the way and you kind of just almost like let go of
- 28:22everything And then like the true feel kind of comes to the
- 28:26surface. And that rather than like,
- 28:29absolutely holding on to every last inch and squeezing out
- 28:32everything you can, it's just like, OK, let's just like, let
- 28:35it be what it is now. I just think you just lose
- 28:39fitness because you sort of like if you take the last seven
- 28:42weeks, so say like at the peak of your training block and let's
- 28:45say you've freshened up for a few days, but you've put in this
- 28:48really nice training block where you're under that progressive
- 28:51overload for like a month or two.
- 28:53And you're sort of you're sitting in that state of where
- 28:56you know that fatigue score is greater than your current
- 28:58fitness score as far as training peaks would illustrate it.
- 29:01When, and I think you're in that state, you, I think you're
- 29:04building fitness. And then what you do for a race
- 29:07is you remove that layer of fatigue.
- 29:10Your fitness maybe drops a a smidge, but you get so much from
- 29:14the taper that it, it, it sort of negates any sort of small
- 29:18fitness loss. Whereas and so that's what
- 29:20happens. And that's why you freshen up.
- 29:22That's why you do a big training block and then freshen up up and
- 29:24do a race. I just generally find like with
- 29:27the marathon, you, you do two or three weeks of sort of tapering
- 29:30into a marathon. The week after the marathon you
- 29:33don't really run and then you're only just sort of dipping into
- 29:36sessions now. Like if I looked at my training
- 29:39load right now, particularly for the last say 5 weeks, if I
- 29:42rolled back, say you know to about six or seven weeks ago
- 29:46when it was very high, I've sort of lost a chunk of training
- 29:50load. So I just don't think.
- 29:51And so my legs. And so whilst you sort of fairly
- 29:54fresh in a training load sense, that can't compensate for the
- 29:59fact that you've just lost a fair bit of your fitness by just
- 30:02not have you just not done that many in the last four or five
- 30:05weeks, I've done barely any workouts and done barely any
- 30:08volume comparatively that I can't expect my body to perform
- 30:12like it could even it though it's sort of relatively low the
- 30:15training load. Couple that with I think like I
- 30:18just find particularly the marathon, if you do an all out
- 30:20marathon effort, like my legs are wrecked and I don't find I
- 30:23get over that for three weeks. So I think you have AI think
- 30:29you've sort of D trained for one of a better term over that last
- 30:32month and you've absolutely minced your legs.
- 30:35Like I'm sort of like, oh, I need to in my mind.
- 30:39And like you say, maybe it's part mental as well, but I've
- 30:41worked a heart rate monitor on in the past, like and tried to
- 30:45RIP myself in workouts soon after I've come back.
- 30:47Like I can't produce the same results as what I could when I'm
- 30:51absolutely flying. So I don't and I don't expect to
- 30:55be able to. So I sort of just disconnect
- 30:57from any sort of PBS and running great workouts and all that sort
- 31:01of stuff for 6-8 weeks and, and I'll take stock then and
- 31:06hopefully by then I'll be running pretty well.
- 31:08The, do you remember that graph, the chart, the image, the RAF
- 31:13sensors in whilst we were tapering?
- 31:15And it was kind of like there was one line to represent
- 31:18fatigue, one to represent train and load, and one to represent
- 31:22performance and kind of how they interact with each other as you
- 31:27increase or decrease them. That is a really good visual
- 31:30representation of what you've just explained, isn't it?
- 31:33So I'll try and dig that out and put it on the story so that
- 31:36hopefully people can make sense of what we're saying.
- 31:39Yeah. And like Training Peaks has some
- 31:41great charts when you can sort of see the relationship between
- 31:44your fitness scores and your fatigue scores and freshness
- 31:47scores and you can like it. I know for me it sort of
- 31:50correlates when when my training loads high and then when I
- 31:53freshen up, generally run my, you know, sort of get the best
- 31:56out of myself. So yeah, I tend to follow that.
- 31:59And I can tell you what my CTO, my training load is today.
- 32:02I can tell you what it was four or five weeks ago.
- 32:05And yeah, it's not quite what it was, but yeah.
- 32:08So onto Friday again, the standard sort of two easy runs
- 32:13to and from the office. Yeah, legs were a little bit
- 32:16sore after the mono, but nothing too bad.
- 32:18So which meant that I thought I'll come down to the session on
- 32:22Saturday. And it was, it was crazy where
- 32:25it was at like Munga. And there's just people
- 32:27absolutely everywhere. I think a lot of people doing a
- 32:30workout ahead of the HBF run for a reason which is very popular
- 32:36412 or 21 K fund run in Perth. So yeah.
- 32:40So a lot of athletes either on like casual programs or or
- 32:43specific HBF run for a reason programs or are just our regular
- 32:48guys doing their session, sort of Ben, who takes a lot of the
- 32:51track guys. Some of those guys were down as
- 32:54well, as well as the regular sort of Saturday tempo guys.
- 32:58So it was very busy down at Lake Munga and we had two K reps so
- 33:03just five by two Ki think because the lake was so busy, we
- 33:07ended up doing these two K reps as an out and back.
- 33:09So it was like 1K out and then do AU turn and come back, which
- 33:12upset me quite a bit, but you sort of just do what you told.
- 33:16But I would have much preferred them to have been continuous
- 33:19rather than chucking AU turn each time.
- 33:22With a stand in recovery or did you jog through?
- 33:25Just a light, light jog, like it's like 9090 seconds, I think
- 33:29just a very slow jog. And yeah, there was a bit of a
- 33:32group of us, yeah, maybe about six of us sort of all rolling
- 33:36through. I think we're they're in about
- 33:39310 pace. And yeah, sort of tick them off.
- 33:43All felt everything felt OK, which was good.
- 33:48Yeah. Happy to have got a second
- 33:50workout in, sort of enjoyed doing it, enjoyed being with the
- 33:54group. I didn't feel amazing, but felt
- 33:57it felt completely fine. Didn't feel like it was too hard
- 33:59or anything, which was good. And then Sunday got out with
- 34:03Josh just for for 90 minutes. He was doing 90 minutes.
- 34:06I was maybe going to go a bit longer, but I thought I'd better
- 34:09get home and get stuck into Mother's Day.
- 34:12Yeah, nice. So what did that round out you?
- 34:14Weaker. I think it's like 130 something,
- 34:18133 it's. Just a slight improvement on
- 34:21last week. That's a little bit more than
- 34:23last week. People will say, weren't they
- 34:26like, well, some, some people will say like when you're
- 34:28building mileage, like add whatever formulas people work
- 34:32with like 5% weekly and stuff. But feel like when, when you've
- 34:36got so much mileage behind you, you're pretty safe to jump back
- 34:40to kind of like a pretty solid base, aren't you?
- 34:43Like you've done there. Yeah, I think I've averaged like
- 34:46close to 130 KS for like the last five years or something.
- 34:50So 100. And so sort of does it just
- 34:53feel, yeah, it's doesn't feel like too much.
- 34:56Yeah, it would. It wouldn't serve any purpose to
- 35:00run 80 K, then 100K, then 120 K Would that like it's not really
- 35:04going to do any favours for you as opposed to just running that
- 35:07130 K week? Yeah, I don't think, yeah, I
- 35:10mean, I could do that, but, and that would be very conservative,
- 35:16but yeah, I don't know. I'm to be honest, you know, I'm
- 35:19not going to be potentially able to be competitive forever.
- 35:23I'd rather try and see what I can do.
- 35:27And I sort of know this must be about my 10th marathon or
- 35:31thereabouts. I sort of know what is quite
- 35:34risky and what I can get away with.
- 35:36So sort of bearing that in mind, but yeah, that sort of weight
- 35:41didn't feel like it was too much.
- 35:42Good. Sounds like yeah, you're back
- 35:44and the wheels are in motion. And now as we sit here on Monday
- 35:48night, you're feeling pretty good.
- 35:49Ready to roll into this week? Yeah, hopefully again, like if
- 35:53something flares up I'll back off.
- 35:55But yeah, I'll all be and well be at the track tomorrow night.
- 35:58I was going to ask you this at the end maybe, but I'll ask you
- 36:01now. Any closer to being able to say
- 36:05what the next race might be? Did I mention I have an entry
- 36:10for Valencia? Did I mention that I.
- 36:12Think we spoke about it offline? I asked you if you'd sent the
- 36:15e-mail. Yeah, so I emailed Kieran
- 36:20Perkins. He's coaches Kieran or has coach
- 36:23Kieran in the past and he's he shared an e-mail with me last
- 36:29week and that must have been around the time that those
- 36:31entries open. So yeah, I sent an e-mail to
- 36:33that e-mail address and they confirmed that my times met the
- 36:39qualifying criteria. So whatever that means.
- 36:42And I think they said they'll be in touch with some sort of code
- 36:45or something where I can go in and register.
- 36:47So I'll do that. So that's an entry for Valencia.
- 36:50So that might be the main thing to focus on at the back end of
- 36:54the year is to try and crescendo towards that.
- 36:56Yeah, well, it's nice to know that the entry is there if you
- 36:59want it and if you're going to be able to be fit for it.
- 37:02Exactly. It's gives you something to
- 37:04softly focus on for now, doesn't it?
- 37:07Yeah, yeah, yeah. And there, yeah, there's heaps,
- 37:09there's so many good races. So yeah, in the very short term,
- 37:13just building fitness and then beyond that I'll start racing I.
- 37:17Mean it's kind of embarrassing, but it's funny.
- 37:19So I'll say it. I, I sent an e-mail to that
- 37:22Valencia thing as well, full fully knowing that I didn't hit
- 37:26the criteria, but I just thought I'll see if I can just kind of
- 37:29slip through the net. But they they told me that my
- 37:34World Athletics profile didn't quite stack.
- 37:37Open to to try the next ballot. Was it the, I forget the name,
- 37:42but there's some bloke who was like the main person, Marginal
- 37:47says. So we say, let let you down
- 37:49gently. Yeah, I didn't get as I didn't
- 37:51Scroll down as far as the best wishes, the Santiago sign off
- 37:58swipe the e-mail by then, but it was the criteria, the entry
- 38:01criteria was sub 220 or sub 66 for 1/2.
- 38:06OK. Yeah, I didn't know.
- 38:08OK. Yeah.
- 38:09Where did you? Was that on their website?
- 38:11Was it? Yeah, I think maybe Brady and
- 38:13Toby were speaking about it the other week.
- 38:15So then I kind of dug it out somewhere.
- 38:18It wasn't too clear that what the e-mail was, to be honest
- 38:21with you, and it was in broken English and stuff.
- 38:23But yeah, seemingly it landed in the right place.
- 38:25But they, they sent me on my way, which is fine.
- 38:28And I did text, you didn't. Would you?
- 38:29If you got an entry, would you still contemplate it?
- 38:33I mean, I've said all the way up until this point that like,
- 38:35because I'm going back to Europe in like 2 weeks now actually,
- 38:39that I wouldn't be going again this year.
- 38:41But it depends how my running mood is at that time.
- 38:45Clearly when I've sent this e-mail, I was thinking Europe in
- 38:49December again, sounds good. And I think I did briefly look
- 38:52at flights to kind of see whether that was a sensible
- 38:56thought or not. And maybe I was hoping to see
- 38:59like $3000 and that would kind of be the be the end of it.
- 39:03But they were pretty reasonable, to be honest.
- 39:05And a good, good kind of maybe I don't say this because people
- 39:08might book them out and then they'll be crap.
- 39:11But I mean, you can, you can tell me to remove it if you
- 39:14want. But I think it was like Tuesday
- 39:17to Tuesday with Qatar. So like you're getting in fairly
- 39:20decent amount of time ahead of the race.
- 39:22Maybe you'd want to go earlier and then you've got a day or so
- 39:26after to kind of celebrate, hopefully was $1700 return,
- 39:31yeah. That is pretty good and guitar
- 39:33is such a nice airline to travel with.
- 39:35Yeah, exactly. I think so.
- 39:36That was to maybe Madrid and then you would have to get a
- 39:39train to Valencia. Interesting.
- 39:41So that route will be sold out by this time tomorrow.
- 39:45So you might have to get them. In the morning.
- 39:49Like then, shall I tell you what I have and have not done this
- 39:53week? Please.
- 39:54So what that last week I done maybe 30 odd K and that was
- 40:00because I'd had like 3 complete days off, maybe 4 actually, and
- 40:04then just started to do some jogging towards the end of the
- 40:06week. And then so this week I seen
- 40:10that on my program on Monday was a double but.
- 40:14The double being a cross train. So I decided to do the cross
- 40:17train Monday morning and I was a little bit nervous because I
- 40:20didn't know in waking up on Monday morning what my
- 40:23motivation was going to be to go and jump on the cross trainer
- 40:26with the prospect of doing a double that day.
- 40:30But I cross trained fine and kind of quite enjoyed it.
- 40:33So afterwards I was pretty positive like OK, this is good.
- 40:37I'm happy to get back into like some sort of full training here.
- 40:41So Monday evening I got out from a double, if I can call it a
- 40:45double given that it was cross train.
- 40:47Well the first part was a cross train, so 45 minute run in the
- 40:51evening for about 9 K. And I should add that on Monday
- 40:56night my girlfriend's sister and her boyfriend had flown over to
- 41:01stay with us from the UK, so they're only 20 and 21 I think.
- 41:07So I was on the airport run, the 2:00 AM collection, which was
- 41:12wonderful given I was in the office on Tuesday morning when I
- 41:17went to get my coffee. Actually on the way into work.
- 41:19I always go to the same coffee shop and get the same order.
- 41:22And usually I'll order a regular, say, extra hot, as
- 41:26we've already discussed, controversially on On this day,
- 41:33because of the broken sleep, I asked for a large and she was
- 41:36like a large. And I was like, yeah,
- 41:40absolutely. So maiden anyway.
- 41:45And then after work, I think I had 60 minutes in the program on
- 41:49Tuesday. So again, no kind of intensity
- 41:53planned, just 60 minutes time on feet.
- 41:56But as Dean touched on with the freshness in the legs, this just
- 42:00came out as 4/20 per K, which is a lot faster than I was usually
- 42:04just jog for on a recovery room. But I'm not really looking at
- 42:07pace. I'm just having fun at this
- 42:09stage. So that was that.
- 42:11And then Wednesday I was picking up the visitors from Scarborough
- 42:17Beach. They went to watch sunset up
- 42:19there, so I thought I'd take the opportunity to go and run along
- 42:22the coast for change scenery, which was nice.
- 42:24Done 10 K, 427 per K. And then Thursday was the first
- 42:30planned bit of intensity since a week Sunday prior.
- 42:35So I was a little bit apprehensive as to how this will
- 42:39go. It was only 20 minutes steady
- 42:41and some strides, but Thursday was potentially unseasonably
- 42:47warm. Is it?
- 42:48Was the warm the heat last week unseasonable or?
- 42:51Yeah, yeah, okay, so Thursday was like 30° I think, wasn't it?
- 42:56Maybe it's peak. I'll tell you it was because I
- 43:01went out on my lunch break around midday.
- 43:04And it's normally like mid 20s. It's sort of, you know, 25 to 27
- 43:08by now. It's not not 3032 like it was on
- 43:11Thursday. So I'm trying to think.
- 43:15I think I had the Avios pro threes on for this and I thought
- 43:20I wouldn't really use. Usually I'd do a steady run by
- 43:23heart rate, but I thought I'm not going to use heart rate
- 43:26because it's 30° and my heart rate probably isn't going to
- 43:30reflect the fitness that it was a couple of weeks ago.
- 43:33So I'll just kind of do this to how a steady should feel, but I
- 43:38was looking at my heart rate throughout and then as it turns
- 43:42out, I was kind of laughing almost because I think the
- 43:46steady element was 346 is I think it was on average.
- 43:50But jeez, my heart rate was like, I think tempo was cutting
- 43:54it fine. It was closer to the threshold.
- 43:58It actually felt really good. Like, afterwards, I was so glad
- 44:03to have done it. And, you know, like, that first,
- 44:05that Thursday was the first one back for you as well.
- 44:08Like, you just go out to get it out the way and kind of feel
- 44:11like you've done a bit of a workout again, aren't you?
- 44:13And it doesn't really matter whether it was good or bad on
- 44:16paper. It's just like, OK, that's good
- 44:18because I've done it. Yeah.
- 44:20So that was exactly how this felt, like awful on paper.
- 44:23But I was just happy about it because it kind of draws a line
- 44:27in the sand. And then as you said, you can
- 44:29just kind of work from there. So this weekend we actually went
- 44:35down to Dunsborough for the weekend.
- 44:37So Friday morning, drove down really early and I was half
- 44:42planning on in my mind going to jog Friday evening.
- 44:46But then by the time it come to the evening and I was kind of
- 44:49losing motivation for it, but still battling with myself.
- 44:52Like, will you go? Will you not go?
- 44:54I'll go in half an hour. I'll go in half an hour.
- 44:57And then I eventually realized that it's Friday and it's the
- 45:00second week after the marathon. And so far I've ran Monday,
- 45:04Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday. So this is an ideal opportunity
- 45:08to take a rest day because I didn't want to kind of get back
- 45:11into that routine of not taking rest days unnecessarily.
- 45:15So I was fine to do that towards the end of the marathon block or
- 45:19go like once every every other week just to try and squeeze the
- 45:23mileage and that fatigue. But there's absolutely 0 point
- 45:26in doing that now. So I thought I'd freshen up
- 45:29because my heel was a little bit sore as well.
- 45:31So as soon as I'd made that decision, I was very happy about
- 45:34it and fine with it. It's a thought I'm down here for
- 45:38the weekend, so if I take take today off then I'll be able to
- 45:42enjoy a session on Saturday morning and hopefully a long run
- 45:46on Sunday morning and kind of enjoy running down in Dunsbra
- 45:50there. Change scenery.
- 45:51So the session on Saturday was in my program similar to D and I
- 45:56had four by two K, So it took the opportunity to do that as
- 46:01part of Dunsbra Park Run, which is down on.
- 46:04I don't know how many people would have been to Dunsbra,
- 46:07probably a few on the the coastal path there goes out one
- 46:12way for maybe a kilometer or 800 meters.
- 46:15You do AU turn and then you go back through the start and run
- 46:19another maybe mile out the other way, do AU turn, you come back
- 46:23to the start point. So I went down a little bit
- 46:26early. I planned to do the first two
- 46:29reps before Parker and started and then I would do the second
- 46:33two reps as Parker and because of not being so timely, I only
- 46:39managed to do 1 wrap before the start of Park Run.
- 46:42So I think for this one, I was wearing the Adidas Boston
- 46:49Twelves, which I picked up a couple of weeks prior and that
- 46:52this was the first time that I put these on.
- 46:54And he was feeling pretty good Saturday morning because it had
- 46:57Friday off. So it was nice and fresh.
- 47:00And then my first Rep was 3/26 average pace, which in the
- 47:07program it said 310 because that's what my threshold would
- 47:13have been in the past. But again, I was, I wasn't
- 47:17bothered about trying to hit it or get close to it.
- 47:20I just wanted to go off field and kind of do the session, not
- 47:23really care about what the pace was.
- 47:25I wasn't going to be over analyzing it afterwards and
- 47:27being like gutted because I was unfit or anything.
- 47:30It was just to do it. So after that first one at 326,
- 47:34I knew that it wasn't going to be a case of working down from
- 47:37there. The effort that was required to
- 47:40produce that was going to be pumping out some similar times.
- 47:44So then the first Rep John Park Run was 328, second Rep 327, and
- 47:50then I had to do a Rep afterwards which was 3/28.
- 47:54So it's quite funny because as I ran through the finish line, I
- 47:58was about 200 meters into the last Rep just with how it had
- 48:02fallen. That clearly wasn't so many
- 48:07people down at Duns Park Run either because I was the first
- 48:10finisher and I've kind of grabbed my token off the woman,
- 48:14but tried to like continue with my Rep and the volunteers.
- 48:18Like we're very confused with what was going on as this the
- 48:22first finisher park run that just ran straight through the
- 48:25finish line, collected this token and proceeded to stride on
- 48:29on the road. It was good fun.
- 48:33Did you explain when you came back I.
- 48:35Did yeah. So I kind of shouted I'll be
- 48:37back in 5 minutes as I as I ran off that probably confused them
- 48:41even more. So I was running the shop or
- 48:43something. But I did actually I want my
- 48:46heart rate monitor for this as well, which is interesting that
- 48:48I wanted to get the feedback from the data.
- 48:51So my heart rate for those reps is 1/6, probably 167 on average,
- 49:00168, which is probably about threshold effort really for me
- 49:04there. So yeah, just shows where that
- 49:08fitness has gone. But as quick as it goes, it
- 49:10comes back as long as you're able to kind of get that
- 49:13consistency and that routine back on track.
- 49:15So I'm not really too bothered, to be honest with you.
- 49:18It sounds like I'm being very defensive and justifying
- 49:20everything. Yeah, but actually I'm not
- 49:23bothered. Well, with your with your double
- 49:26trouble about excuses is that is that your?
- 49:29Yeah, I think maybe my double trouble is just going to unravel
- 49:33throughout my week because I did say I was going to, I was going
- 49:37to have a go at myself and I don't really know what I was
- 49:39going to have a go at myself for.
- 49:41But it's probably just having a battle with overthinking and
- 49:45under thinking everything at the same time.
- 49:49It's quite a bizarre mindset. But Becky did actually come down
- 49:52to park from with me as well. And then she she ran in very
- 49:57progressively. So I think at first K was she
- 50:00was maybe stuck in some traffic like 540 and then she settled
- 50:04into like some low 5 minute case.
- 50:07And then her last one. She was telling me afterwards
- 50:09like jeez, I was I was picking off so many people towards the
- 50:12end then and when when we looked at a split, I was like, have a
- 50:15look what your case were. So she's running like 5
- 50:19fifteens, 2-3 and four, and then the last K was like 428, yeah.
- 50:26He wins. That's all right.
- 50:27Yes, if she's just blown through the the Dunsburg pack.
- 50:30Might have. To, but that was gone.
- 50:33I'll Owen better watch out. He'll be getting getting kicked
- 50:37off. Yeah, I mean, it's it's ironic
- 50:39really, because I was taking the piss out of Owen's heart rate
- 50:42when he started going for a few jogs the other week.
- 50:44But here we are, calm against you.
- 50:48Maybe that heart rate monitor should stay in the drawer for a
- 50:51little while. I was going to say what didn't
- 50:53you? Wasn't it faulty?
- 50:54From Ballarat to Faulty. Yeah, it's definitely shown a
- 50:58few few too many beats than it has previously.
- 51:01So maybe I'll I'll send it back to core house for some some
- 51:04feedback inconsistency. But yeah, that was a nice way to
- 51:09start Saturday. And then we had kind of like a,
- 51:12a big, big day out there exploring, contrary to how a
- 51:18pair of 20 year olds would probably like to approach it,
- 51:22that I was kind of keen for being up and about and dragging
- 51:26them around everywhere. Like there's so much to see down
- 51:29there, isn't it? And you want to kind of, well, I
- 51:31wanted to get show the Margaret River as well.
- 51:33And then once you're Margaret River, you're close to Hamlin
- 51:36Bay, like the Stingrays and stuff.
- 51:38So cool to go and see. So I was conscious we had so
- 51:41much to do. And then these two are just
- 51:44like, yeah, we'll get ready soon.
- 51:46Like, let's just have some breakfast.
- 51:48Then it's half nine, it's 10:00, and I'm like, shit, let's get
- 51:52out of here. Come on.
- 51:54Coming back from Parker at 9:00 AM, like, right, Surely they're
- 51:57kind of showered and ready to go.
- 51:59And like the bedroom door hadn't even flinched.
- 52:07Margaret River is great, but it's like it's all it, it shuts
- 52:11off at like 5:00. So you need to, it's all daytime
- 52:15activities. You know, you need to be making
- 52:17the most of the wineries and stops for lunch and the
- 52:20breweries and that during the day and all the beautiful
- 52:22scenery and stuffs, all to be consumed during daylight.
- 52:26So yeah, they're missing it. Exactly.
- 52:28And this is what I was conscious of.
- 52:29I knew that the the day would come and go and it'd be pitch
- 52:33black before we knew it. So then on the Saturday we
- 52:35actually didn't even make it to any of the wineries, which was
- 52:38kind of one of the main things that they wanted to do,
- 52:41obviously. And I was like, well, it's
- 52:43certainly not my fault, but we got there on Sunday anyway.
- 52:51So on that Saturday evening, my heel was killing.
- 52:55To be honest. It's so annoying.
- 52:57I actually missed the fact that on Thursday I got a scan on it.
- 53:02I went for an MRI, which I didn't do too much reading into,
- 53:07like kind of what an MRI was or why you would need one.
- 53:12I just remember the day after Ballarat when like, I literally
- 53:16could hardly walk on it. I was, I just kept telling
- 53:19myself like, remember this feeling, remember this feeling
- 53:22because you know that as you rest and stuff, it will innovate
- 53:26the commas heal or like start to feel better.
- 53:29But unless I'm going to do something about it properly,
- 53:32it's not going to go away. So it's just, I wanted to like
- 53:35kind of just be honest with myself and make sure that I got
- 53:39I got it seen too. So I've kind of maybe gone over
- 53:42and above and just went right and got an MRI on it.
- 53:45So then on Thursday when I was actually looking into it, what,
- 53:49what why would need one and stuff, it was saying about an
- 53:52ultrasound. Like potentially you've got an
- 53:54ultrasound first. And an ultrasound is,
- 53:58unfortunately for me, a hell of a lot cheaper than an MRI.
- 54:02But the good thing is an MRI is a lot more conclusive and like
- 54:07you can kind of see more from the images.
- 54:10So when I got that done on Thursday anyway, I'm still
- 54:12unfortunately waiting for the results as we sit here now.
- 54:15So can't tell you what's going on exactly, but that's kind of
- 54:18put me at ease, at least the fact that I'm going to find out.
- 54:22So then, yeah, when it was killing on Saturday evening, I
- 54:26wasn't, I was like, Oh, well, if it's this sore again in the
- 54:30morning, I'm not bothered about not running because I'm just,
- 54:33I'm waiting to kind of get it all fixed properly.
- 54:36Like I'm not going to force anything right now, which is why
- 54:39I woke up when it was sore. So I just went for a bike ride
- 54:42and. That was the bike ride.
- 54:44The bike ride was fun. So we stayed in this Airbnb and
- 54:49they had a big, a big house and in the shed there was kayaks,
- 54:54bikes, like all sorts of stuff that you could use as part of
- 54:57it, which was like so good. So on.
- 54:59On the Saturday we took the kayaks out, which was at first
- 55:03like 2 meters and then feeling incredibly uneasy and thinking
- 55:07about sharks come back. And then in 5 minutes time I'd
- 55:10go again, go for five meters. I eventually got out to like one
- 55:16of the boys, which is, I don't know, maybe only 20 meters
- 55:19offshore. But before I'd went out there,
- 55:22Becky was like a day years ago, goes to the boy.
- 55:25So then as I'm, as I'm paddling out there, she starts shouting
- 55:29like Ryan, what are you doing? Like she started getting scared
- 55:32for me and I was like, I'm just, I'm enjoying it now.
- 55:35To be fair, don't like put me on edge.
- 55:38I think she might have. Have you seen the Facebook page?
- 55:42It's like dorsal, like DOSDORSAL shark reports.
- 55:48Have you have you subscribed to that Facebook page?
- 55:51The the three of them. So Becky, your sister and her
- 55:54boyfriend this weekend have been getting right into it, Yeah.
- 55:57And have you seen like they're pretty regular the sightings
- 56:01like it's more regular than maybe what you bigger than what
- 56:04I realized in terms of shark sightings along the WA coast.
- 56:08So yeah, bit too much for me. Yeah, if you enjoy having a deck
- 56:12in the ocean, then I would recommend that you you don't
- 56:16start digging into that stuff. But if you're also conscious
- 56:19about your own safety, then maybe you should do it because
- 56:21there are plenty of shore sharks along the coast, extremely close
- 56:26to the shore seemingly. Yeah, that's it.
- 56:29Scary. Well, good to.
- 56:30Good to see you. I follow this page on X set
- 56:35Lifesaving WA and they they tweet when a shark has been
- 56:40spotted by a member of the public or by the helicopters
- 56:44that fly over. And also they have the tagged
- 56:47ones they ping off the receivers.
- 56:49So they do all of those alerts and there was one on there the
- 56:52other day and it was a 3M unknown species shark 3 meters
- 56:58offshore spotted by a member of the public.
- 57:00So and then it also said there is currently a man swimming out
- 57:05beyond the shark and people are unable to get his attention and
- 57:09it's just like, oh God yeah, swimming the shark Nets.
- 57:15Although the the one at Clotslow clearly wasn't up to purpose,
- 57:19was it when the the bronze whaler shark was stuck in there
- 57:22for two days a few months ago? Yeah, supposed to keep them out,
- 57:25not in. To shoot the beach for two days
- 57:30because the shark would swim around inside.
- 57:33But yeah, that did no shark in cancers for me fortunately.
- 57:37And then the bike ride was an hour 15.
- 57:41I actually wanted to go. I was prepared mentally to go
- 57:44for like two or three hours. Now this is probably just poor
- 57:48planning and me making assumptions based off being
- 57:52surrounded by a few triathletes at front runner and stuff and
- 57:55seeing them go on massive rides for hours and like just going
- 58:00over all these hills and stuff like that.
- 58:03But I had this crappy little mountain bike that the gears
- 58:07were falling off. It was just stuck in one gear,
- 58:09but you know, like the sun was shining.
- 58:11It was a nice, nice morning down in Dunsbrough, pretty flat.
- 58:15I thought, I'll just get up and down the coast, like I'll be out
- 58:17there for hours. This would be great.
- 58:19I'll stop off, have a coffee. And then then once I got to
- 58:22Dunsbruck, we're staying in Marybrook, which is just like
- 58:2510K up the road or 9K or something like that.
- 58:28Yeah. I noticed that the front tire
- 58:30was starting to feel a little bit more spongy than it did when
- 58:34I left. So I was like, gosh, yeah, I
- 58:36best start heading back. This could be a slow puncture.
- 58:39And then it was pretty apparent very quickly that it was a low
- 58:42puncture. So instead of cycling back along
- 58:45the coastal path, I decided to cycle back along the road in
- 58:48case I literally couldn't cycle because I was then on the rim.
- 58:53And I thought that all the like the youths going past, I'll be
- 58:57able to flag someone with like a bit of an open back cabin and he
- 59:00could just stick my bike in the back and take me up the road to
- 59:04Marybrook. But I stuck at it and I was
- 59:07cycling on not much of A tire at all and got all the way to
- 59:12within. I think I had to walk for 8
- 59:14minutes in the end, but the front tire was literally like a
- 59:18rim by this point. So that was a 27 K cycle I
- 59:23think, and a few lessons learned there.
- 59:26Stick to stick to the joggers. Exactly, stick to what you know.
- 59:30Stay in your lane buddy. Do I think that was for me maybe
- 59:3465 KS or something, which is an improvement on last week?
- 59:38I think last week was 30 K I'm in no rush because I don't know
- 59:43what's next. I just want to get these results
- 59:45and see what's going on and kind of take appropriate steps to
- 59:49address it properly. So yeah, that's that's it for
- 59:51me. Nice.
- 59:52Yeah, You know, good week. Hopefully nothing's too sinister
- 59:58with the heels, so onwards and upwards.
- 1:00:00Yeah, that's it. So training weeks out the way
- 1:00:04with running news is covered off.
- 1:00:06We have YouTube Diaries. Shall I talk about what I was
- 1:00:11going to mention? So I think it's a fairly new
- 1:00:14channel, to be fair. So Josh Kerr, who is the world
- 1:00:181500m champion, Yeah. So I think his channel is fairly
- 1:00:22new. He's only seems to have started
- 1:00:24putting out videos in the past year or so.
- 1:00:27I don't know if the reason behind it is kind of because he
- 1:00:30seems to get a little bit of criticism in like the media and
- 1:00:34storytelling and stuff. Because this rivalry between
- 1:00:38himself and Jacobin, Brickson and Brickson, people seem to go
- 1:00:43with the narrative of like Josh Kerr doesn't race very often and
- 1:00:46he kind of he dodges people and he only races when he's like
- 1:00:50100% fully fit and stuff. So I don't know, I get the
- 1:00:54impression that maybe he wanted to kind of tell his own version
- 1:00:57of that story and kind of bring people in onto the inside to
- 1:01:00show them what goes on in his camp.
- 1:01:03And it is very intrusive almost in terms of like behind the
- 1:01:08scenes, how it's set up. His wife's involved, his coach
- 1:01:12is involved and his manager, because I think the kind of work
- 1:01:15almost in in tangent, the guy called Danny, I think he's the
- 1:01:21actual coach from Brooks. And then I can't remember the
- 1:01:25other guy's name. He's almost like his manager.
- 1:01:29So we started doing some videos since Grand Slam as well.
- 1:01:33So it's really insightful to see not only like kind of how Josh
- 1:01:36cares training and his campus set up, but also kind of their
- 1:01:41their approach to Grand Slam and kind of peak throughout the year
- 1:01:45and plan. And because they're very
- 1:01:47revealing and in terms of like giving away, not necessarily
- 1:01:50strategy, but just all their thoughts around their approach
- 1:01:54to Josh's training and getting them ready for certain events.
- 1:01:57And Josh is very open as well, which you potentially wouldn't
- 1:02:01think. So one of the really good videos
- 1:02:03was after Kingston. He done like this Kingston Grand
- 1:02:07Slammy done behind the scenes there.
- 1:02:09And he obviously, in case you missed it, he didn't perform
- 1:02:13very well there. So it was really cool to see
- 1:02:16everything that went on and they followed it after the race as
- 1:02:21well. So you see him like his kind of
- 1:02:22raw reflections and how he like, was very pissed off with his
- 1:02:27performance. And I haven't actually seen the
- 1:02:30ones that have come out from Miami, but I imagine they'll be
- 1:02:33pretty good because he obviously done a hell of a lot better in
- 1:02:36Miami. Yeah.
- 1:02:38And there was 1 from. 1500. He won the 15 and then he was
- 1:02:43like fifth or something in the 8th, but that meant that he
- 1:02:46still ended up winning the whole category.
- 1:02:49There was one from Melrose Games, which I thought was
- 1:02:54pretty, pretty bold to put the video out because he ended up
- 1:02:57pulling out of Melrose like the day off or the day before.
- 1:03:02But the kind of what went into him pulling out was completely
- 1:03:06different to when I when I read the news article and you see in
- 1:03:10our Josh cares, the DNS, my first reaction is that narrative
- 1:03:14of like, oh, he's bottled it again, like because I think it
- 1:03:17was in Britain and the goose were on the start list.
- 1:03:20And it's like, fuck sake. Like, come on, just race them.
- 1:03:23Like you only ever race them once a year.
- 1:03:25And then on this video, you see almost how delusional he was in
- 1:03:29wanting to race. And they had to like he was
- 1:03:32throwing up all throughout the night and didn't sleep.
- 1:03:35And then he wakes up in the morning of the race and he's
- 1:03:37like, yeah, I think I'm feeling I can't, I can't start doing
- 1:03:40these impressions every week. Did he start saying that he's
- 1:03:45he's like, yeah, I'm feeling better.
- 1:03:47And they're like, Josh, you've literally haven't been able to
- 1:03:50stomach food for 36 hours. And he's like, yeah, let's try
- 1:03:54like, let's try some fruit. And let's just say give it a few
- 1:03:57more hours. And then they're like, there's
- 1:04:00no chance, Josh. But he's like at the moment, and
- 1:04:03then obviously when he takes a step back and they show this as
- 1:04:05well, once the race is kind of come and gone, he's like, yeah,
- 1:04:08I'm reflection. It's it's the right decision.
- 1:04:11But in that moment like that and you see, I would have done
- 1:04:14anything to race. So it's really good insight.
- 1:04:17Like this is one of the good things about YouTube, like you
- 1:04:20just getting to see all these things that you otherwise
- 1:04:22wouldn't. Yeah, I think, I think I
- 1:04:24remember when that video out there were the coffee cup got
- 1:04:29that were having a little bit of the of a laugh at his expense.
- 1:04:34Is he maybe footage of him actually throwing up?
- 1:04:37I think and they're like, oh God, is it 2 behind the scenes?
- 1:04:40Like, is that? Yeah, very transparent.
- 1:04:42Yeah, it's good stuff. So if anyone has watched the
- 1:04:46Miami one or does watch the Miami one, then let's know what
- 1:04:49you think if you're team Josh Kerr, team Jacob or team anyone
- 1:04:54else. Because I think that's what
- 1:04:57they're trying to create with that 1500, aren't they?
- 1:04:59They're trying to almost like get people to have their
- 1:05:01favourites and kind of follow along that way.
- 1:05:04Yeah, and Speaking of, and like so many popular like top tier
- 1:05:10athletes now have their own YouTube channel.
- 1:05:12It's sort of a way of like sort of, you know, paying, you know,
- 1:05:18giving a bit of a shout out to their sponsors and you know,
- 1:05:20some almost like necessary marketing, but also great
- 1:05:23insight for people that want to understand their, you know,
- 1:05:27understand them a bit more as people.
- 1:05:29So they're like running is a bit of a hard thing to follow, hard
- 1:05:32sport to follow. And some of these you'd like
- 1:05:34even Grand Slam track. I don't think they've done a
- 1:05:36great job of bringing the athlete like bringing the
- 1:05:41viewers along with like along the journey of building up the
- 1:05:45race and how the athletes feel. And you know, you're sort of not
- 1:05:49really sitting side by side with the athletes.
- 1:05:52You sort of it all feels a bit distant.
- 1:05:55And so whereas these YouTube channels, you sort of really,
- 1:05:58it's like when Clayton Young is sort of documenting his build up
- 1:06:02into a marathon, you sort of really get a real sense of what
- 1:06:05he's gone through to get there and what he's hoping for.
- 1:06:08And then you can sort of take that into your viewing of them
- 1:06:11for the race, which makes it so much more enjoyable.
- 1:06:16Why these guys doing that? Which just makes following their
- 1:06:19journey and their and the theatre that plays out in the
- 1:06:22race so much more exciting. I think something Jakub Inger
- 1:06:26Britson likes. He has his own YouTube channel
- 1:06:29and a video of his just popped up on my feed the other day as
- 1:06:31well. So I wonder, talk about that
- 1:06:33rivalry. Maybe they've taken the rivalry
- 1:06:35to YouTube. Maybe we we can unpack Jakub's
- 1:06:38channel next week because there's a few a few obscure
- 1:06:42videos on there as well I think. Cool stuff, yeah.
- 1:06:47Yeah, that was you just reminded me one of the things I wanted to
- 1:06:50say about Grand Slam as part of like Josh Cares Youtubers, they
- 1:06:55mentioned that like whilst the film that they're like, Oh yeah,
- 1:06:58you guys won't see this for for a week because of the embargo or
- 1:07:02something. So Grand Slam must have placed
- 1:07:05this embargo over like all the content, which my interpretation
- 1:07:10of that was that they're trying really hard to control the
- 1:07:13narrative. They don't want other people to
- 1:07:17kind of get their stories out and that be dictating our grand
- 1:07:21slams represented. They want to establish like
- 1:07:24Grand Slam are able to dictate the storyline and then that kind
- 1:07:29of establishes itself. And then a week later athletes
- 1:07:33videos will start coming out. But by then it's already like,
- 1:07:35Oh yeah, it's exactly how Grand Slam wanted to be seen.
- 1:07:39But they've done a shit job as far as bringing people so that's
- 1:07:42been a knock on it. I don't.
- 1:07:44If Grand did a great job of creating a great experience for
- 1:07:48people to watch, that stuff would have been fine, but they
- 1:07:51haven't. Yeah.
- 1:07:53And I think that shows that kind of they they were worried about
- 1:07:56that happening in advance. The fact that they tried to set
- 1:07:59these things up to control the narrative.
- 1:08:02It's unfortunately I did not because I've been preoccupied
- 1:08:06all weekend. We've kind of done this show off
- 1:08:07the cuff. There was no agenda, which meant
- 1:08:10that I didn't put any listener questions out.
- 1:08:12So apologies for that. We will be back and opening up
- 1:08:15the listener questions for next week.
- 1:08:17And my double trouble hopefully was unpacked throughout my very
- 1:08:21high, very low here, there and everywhere and unpacking of my
- 1:08:25training week. So like the the morals that come
- 1:08:28out of it is just to just be a bit more chill and then be so
- 1:08:33reactive to everything. So yeah, maybe throughout last
- 1:08:37week I was, I don't even know what it is.
- 1:08:40I just not not over analyzing, but then also not completely
- 1:08:45disengaging, like just allowing it to be what it is.
- 1:08:49I think I've got to that point with it because it's, it's easy
- 1:08:55to over analyse and then also when things, when you do that
- 1:08:59analysis and maybe it isn't what you want to see, then it's easy
- 1:09:02to completely flip and be like, right, fuck that.
- 1:09:05Like I'm I'm done with it or whatever, but just find that
- 1:09:08middle ground and just roll through it.
- 1:09:10Yeah, I find that like this time after the marathon is sort of
- 1:09:14like you're not training sessions don't have as much
- 1:09:17purpose because you're not doing them towards anything.
- 1:09:21Your fitness has evaporated a little bit, which is a bit cruel
- 1:09:24because you've just put in this huge block and then your body
- 1:09:27doesn't feel that good because it's just been beaten up.
- 1:09:29So it's sort of a bit of a tricky spot really.
- 1:09:32So it's sort of like, like you say, so you sort of know all
- 1:09:35those things. So therefore you're not fully
- 1:09:37committing to your sessions because you know you're not
- 1:09:39meant to. You need to sort of start to
- 1:09:41build some fitness to the extent you can.
- 1:09:44But then at the same time, you sort of want to chill out a bit
- 1:09:46because running doesn't need to mean everything all the time.
- 1:09:50And this is the time where if you've got social commitments
- 1:09:53and time with family, you sort of lean into that.
- 1:09:55And so if you miss some stuff, but then at the same time you're
- 1:09:58forever like trying to build that training fatigue up because
- 1:10:01you want to get fitter than ever.
- 1:10:03So yeah, a bit of an awkward stance, but it is holidays.
- 1:10:06And that's, I don't know if the right terminology is my problem,
- 1:10:11but when training isn't incredibly important, I kind of
- 1:10:16lean into that being the case. So like I will eat more than
- 1:10:20award that will drink more than award and stuff like that.
- 1:10:23But then I very much enjoy getting to a point where like
- 1:10:27I'm completely sick of not having a routine and not being
- 1:10:31fit and then I almost deliberately do it because then
- 1:10:34the process of building again and just getting fitter and
- 1:10:38fitter and fitter is just so enjoyable.
- 1:10:41So yeah, I think maybe I'll be chilling out for a little bit
- 1:10:45whilst I'm in Europe and stuff and then look to get serious
- 1:10:49with training again comes start of July.
- 1:10:52And hopefully the a goal right now is to just be in a position
- 1:10:56to be able to be serious with training in terms of getting
- 1:10:59this heel right. Exactly.
- 1:11:02Sounds good. Nice Dean, did you have any last
- 1:11:05words before we close it out? No, I just thought we did quite
- 1:11:08well given you know, we were had relatively light weeks and no,
- 1:11:12no talking, somehow we still nearly spoke for an hour and a
- 1:11:15half. Yeah, we've managed to wing it,
- 1:11:17so cheers for sticking with us guys.
- 1:11:19We'll see you next week. Happy training mate.
- 1:11:21See you mate.
