- 0:00Speaker 1: Hello and welcome to may the review be with you
- 0:02Speaker 1: with nick and joe i'm joe.
- 0:04Speaker 2: And i'm nick and today we are talking about the
- 0:06Speaker 2: season one finale of lanterns.
- 0:11Speaker 3: Joe yeah nick i can't like you can't this is
- 0:14Speaker 3: what this show is it's incredible it's so good I
- 0:20Speaker 3: love this show.
- 0:22Speaker 2: Episode 8 of Lanterns, Dirt and Stars. Finally, we get
- 0:26Speaker 2: some answers that we've been looking for in this episode.
- 0:30Speaker 2: We find out who killed Hal Jordan. We find out
- 0:33Speaker 2: who broke out Sinestro. We find out.
- 0:35Speaker 3: Some things that are hiding in plain sight.
- 0:38Speaker 1: A weenie, if you will.
- 0:40Speaker 3: A weenie, if you will. Joe, kick us off. Give
- 0:43Speaker 3: me some thoughts.
- 0:44Speaker 1: Oh, my gosh. Well, I was wrong. I accused Noah.
- 0:48Speaker 1: And like the second Noah said it was me, I
- 0:50Speaker 1: was like, God damn it. It wasn't him. Damn it.
- 0:52Speaker 1: Like the show does this repeatedly.
- 0:55Speaker 2: But you were right about Noah being being a man,
- 0:58Speaker 2: being a manhunter.
- 0:59Speaker 3: Right.
- 1:00Speaker 1: So episode eight spoilers from here on out, y'all.
- 1:03Speaker 2: Yeah, you were correct about you did call that out,
- 1:07Speaker 2: that there was something, you know, sketchy about Noah.
- 1:11Speaker 3: I mean, so right. And it makes sense, right?
- 1:13Speaker 1: Well, no, I was just going to say, he just
- 1:17Speaker 1: seemed too innocent and too perfect. And given the attention
- 1:21Speaker 1: that Zoe would give him, it just seemed... It is Zoe, okay.
- 1:26Speaker 1: That Zoe would... I did it again. That Zoe would
- 1:28Speaker 1: give him... There we go. He just felt like a suspect, right?
- 1:35Speaker 1: Like a legitimate suspect. And I was trying to think
- 1:38Speaker 1: of reasons why he would kill Hal and discovering that
- 1:41Speaker 1: he was a manhunter felt like a good reason. But
- 1:44Speaker 1: what we did not take into consideration is that he,
- 1:47Speaker 1: Noah would actually be willing to save John or save
- 1:50Speaker 1: Hal and reveal his secret to him. Right. And what
- 1:55Speaker 1: happened next was a little bit more emotionally complicated. And Nick,
- 1:59Speaker 1: my immediate thoughts on this finale and why it stands
- 2:03Speaker 1: out to me versus so many other superhero shows or
- 2:06Speaker 1: comic book shows rather is is this didn't end with,
- 2:11Speaker 1: I thought for sure, like some kind of big battle, right?
- 2:14Speaker 1: Like the big moment happens, what, episode five of this season?
- 2:20Speaker 1: The big explosions, right? Whereas this was an emotional drama, right?
- 2:25Speaker 1: And I want to come back to this versus another
- 2:28Speaker 1: show later, but that's my first immediate takeaway is that
- 2:31Speaker 1: first and foremost, it ended the story on an emotional
- 2:35Speaker 1: high note and maybe some emotional low notes, but it
- 2:39Speaker 1: focused on that character arc rather than any sort of
- 2:42Speaker 1: green lantern action.
- 2:43Speaker 3: Yeah, that's great. It's such a great call out.
- 2:45Speaker 2: Like I was at the end when he, when Stuart
- 2:48Speaker 2: calls Guy Gardner and they have that conversation, I'm like,
- 2:52Speaker 2: are they going to.
- 2:53Speaker 3: Get after it right now? Are we going to see
- 2:55Speaker 3: a battle? And are we going to see John get
- 2:56Speaker 3: to use his new ring?
- 2:57Speaker 2: Like, or his new, you know, lantern, obviously same, same
- 3:00Speaker 2: ring from before, but, and then we didn't get that right.
- 3:02Speaker 3: It was just an emotional moment. And that whole episode
- 3:05Speaker 3: was like that.
- 3:06Speaker 2: And it's incredible how they were able to just make
- 3:09Speaker 2: the episode so intense through just the dialogue, right? There
- 3:13Speaker 2: was no like, I was on the edge of my
- 3:15Speaker 2: seat like the whole time, just like I was in
- 3:17Speaker 2: episode five for completely different reasons, right? Action versus just emotion.
- 3:22Speaker 1: Dialogue, emotion and dialogue.
- 3:24Speaker 2: It was just, it's really incredibly well done. And they
- 3:27Speaker 2: closed all these loops, which if you watch the after credits,
- 3:31Speaker 2: you watch the quick wrap-up HBO does, which is always
- 3:34Speaker 2: really appreciated. And you hear the producers and directors and
- 3:37Speaker 2: the writers talking about what they wanted. They specifically wanted
- 3:40Speaker 2: that for this show, right? They wanted a beginning, middle,
- 3:42Speaker 2: and end. And they wanted to have all the questions
- 3:44Speaker 2: answered when the season ended, which is, as a viewer, like,
- 3:48Speaker 2: thank you, right? We're not like, Left on some cliffhanger
- 3:52Speaker 2: where he was like, oh my God, like, yes, I
- 3:53Speaker 2: want season two.
- 3:54Speaker 3: To be tomorrow.
- 3:55Speaker 1: Damon Lindelof has had his own character journey since his
- 3:59Speaker 1: time in the writer's room of Lost. He has had
- 4:02Speaker 1: his own character growth and now believes in giving audience
- 4:04Speaker 1: members answers, satisfying answers. So thank you.
- 4:09Speaker 2: He's had plenty of time to leave audiences hanging. So
- 4:12Speaker 2: thank you, David, for learning from your mistakes.
- 4:14Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 4:14Speaker 1: Yeah. David certainly has left many people hanging from from
- 4:19Speaker 1: loss who are still hanging. Some of us are still
- 4:21Speaker 1: hanging in there.
- 4:22Speaker 3: Yeah. Yeah.
- 4:22Speaker 2: Like anyway, this isn't a lost episode again, Joe, for
- 4:26Speaker 2: the 700th time on this podcast.
- 4:28Speaker 1: We should do a Lost episode, man.
- 4:30Speaker 3: We have to rewatch Lost to do that. Okay, here
- 4:32Speaker 3: we go.
- 4:33Speaker 1: Oh no, we have to go back.
- 4:34Speaker 3: Back on track. Speaking of going back to the Lanterns
- 4:38Speaker 3: episode that we're here to talk about. Okay, Noah's the Manhunter.
- 4:41Speaker 3: He saves Hal Jordan.
- 4:42Speaker 2: And even though he doesn't kill Hal Jordan, he uses
- 4:45Speaker 2: the fact that Hal now knows that he is the
- 4:47Speaker 2: Manhunter as the reason that he tells John that he
- 4:52Speaker 2: killed him, right? He was like, and then Hal wouldn't
- 4:54Speaker 2: let it go. Like he wouldn't let it go that
- 4:56Speaker 2: I was the Manhunter and he came looking And looking
- 4:58Speaker 2: for me and like wanted to see what I was
- 5:00Speaker 2: up to, which he did, we find out. But then
- 5:02Speaker 2: he uses that as the excuse to John to try
- 5:04Speaker 2: to convince John that he's the one that killed him, right?
- 5:06Speaker 2: Because he doesn't want John going after Carrie or he
- 5:08Speaker 2: doesn't want anything to happen to his mother.
- 5:09Speaker 1: Nature versus nurture. Nature versus nurture.
- 5:11Speaker 2: Which is a really awesome line from Sinestro during that episode.
- 5:14Speaker 2: And we'll get to that Sinestro scene. So Noah uses
- 5:17Speaker 2: all this, right? And he specifically mentions that Hal couldn't
- 5:20Speaker 2: let it go, which was true, right? Because we see
- 5:23Speaker 2: later in the episode when Hal and Carrie are having
- 5:25Speaker 2: a conversation on the bleachers.
- 5:27Speaker 3: That Hal actually couldn't let it go. He went to Carrie.
- 5:29Speaker 3: He was very upset. He's like, I know who Noah is.
- 5:32Speaker 2: He's planning something. We have to leave and figure out
- 5:34Speaker 2: how to stop him. Hal has always had this issue
- 5:37Speaker 2: where he can't let something go. He did it with Zoe.
- 5:41Speaker 3: Carrie warned him. He did it with Zoe. Hal has
- 5:43Speaker 3: not learned from his mistakes, basically.
- 5:45Speaker 1: Well, it's the baseball, right? He can't let go of
- 5:47Speaker 1: the baseball.
- 5:48Speaker 3: He can't let go of the baseball. Thank you. This
- 5:49Speaker 3: is a great analogy.
- 5:50Speaker 1: Right.
- 5:51Speaker 3: He can't let go of the baseball. And it, in turn,
- 5:54Speaker 3: is what gets him killed.
- 5:56Speaker 1: And.
- 5:56Speaker 2: it's not his fault. It's not Carrie's fault that she's
- 5:59Speaker 2: protecting her son. She's already, she's, she warned him already
- 6:02Speaker 2: with Zoe. So yeah, I, I found that to be.
- 6:06Speaker 1: There's, there's a great moment earlier in the episode where
- 6:09Speaker 1: we get to go back to 2016 when, when the
- 6:14Speaker 1: attacks are happening and we get to revisit that moment
- 6:18Speaker 1: that Hal is in the motel and And Carrie says,
- 6:22Speaker 1: you know, I'm sorry. And Hal reminds her, you told me,
- 6:26Speaker 1: you warned me that if I pursued this, it was
- 6:29Speaker 1: on me. Right. And like, that's exactly what happens in 2026. Right.
- 6:32Speaker 1: He pursues it. And what follows is on him.
- 6:35Speaker 3: Is on him.
- 6:36Speaker 2: Which is, I think, why John also like tells Carrie, like,
- 6:39Speaker 2: Hal wouldn't want you to turn yourself in.
- 6:41Speaker 3: Like, and that's exactly right. I love that moment. that
- 6:44Speaker 3: combo with them was awesome. Right?
- 6:46Speaker 2: Like John has this epiphany or he just knows in
- 6:49Speaker 2: his heart. He's just like, I watched my mom be
- 6:52Speaker 2: afraid my whole life that I wouldn't come home.
- 6:56Speaker 3: And I know how you feel with Noah. Right.
- 6:59Speaker 2: And it's just like this really cool reveal that John
- 7:02Speaker 2: knows more than a lot of people think that he does.
- 7:06Speaker 1: It was such a great way to wrap in his
- 7:10Speaker 1: relationship with his family and into the actual like plot
- 7:14Speaker 1: of this story which was something i was so curious
- 7:16Speaker 1: about like two episodes ago uh when we get to
- 7:18Speaker 1: see 2026 and we get to see how dysfunctional his
- 7:21Speaker 1: family has become how like fragmented they've become and was
- 7:25Speaker 1: really ready to see how why this was going to
- 7:27Speaker 1: be why they were telling us this right why did
- 7:29Speaker 1: this matter in 2026 and it all comes down to
- 7:33Speaker 1: john taking you know those fragments seeing how that journey
- 7:37Speaker 1: happened emotionally for his family and being able to relate
- 7:40Speaker 1: that to carrie and noah are going for are going
- 7:44Speaker 1: through and that's ultimately as you said what leads him
- 7:47Speaker 1: to this epiphany of what really happened who who really
- 7:50Speaker 1: killed uh hal and why and what he should do
- 7:54Speaker 1: next right most importantly what he should do next which
- 7:57Speaker 1: is something he really struggles with um And he even
- 8:01Speaker 1: asks Hal, like, Hal, what should I do? And Halogram
- 8:03Speaker 1: does not show up to tell him, which Halogram says
- 8:05Speaker 1: that that was John's subconscious. It was not letting him come,
- 8:09Speaker 1: which I thought was cute.
- 8:10Speaker 3: Right.
- 8:13Speaker 2: And yeah, in that moment, I thought we might not
- 8:16Speaker 2: see the Halogram again. And then it was really cool
- 8:18Speaker 2: that they brought it back.
- 8:19Speaker 1: Yeah, I thought the same thing. I thought that that
- 8:21Speaker 1: was them like quietly killing him. But yeah, we get
- 8:24Speaker 1: a we get a more proper send off. at the end.
- 8:27Speaker 3: We do, which was very well done.
- 8:30Speaker 2: I'm telling them each other that they love each other, essentially,
- 8:34Speaker 2: if you will. And yeah, I, I have a question
- 8:38Speaker 2: about Sinestro. If you are ready to talk about the
- 8:42Speaker 2: Sinestro scene real quick.
- 8:44Speaker 1: I'm so ready to talk about the Sinestro scene. Cause
- 8:47Speaker 1: I just want to say how like weirdly refreshing, maybe
- 8:51Speaker 1: I'm alone on this mountain on this Island. I don't know.
- 8:56Speaker 1: How weirdly refreshing it is to have a major supervillain
- 9:01Speaker 1: in the lore of some comic book, right? And he's
- 9:06Speaker 1: not there to throw hands, right? He's not there for
- 9:10Speaker 1: this big CGI sequence. He's there for ideology. He's there
- 9:16Speaker 1: for dialogue. And he's trying to use his words to
- 9:19Speaker 1: manipulate the situation. This show.
- 9:22Speaker 3: did this super well.
- 9:23Speaker 2: This show did this so well where it just, it
- 9:25Speaker 2: used the ring so subtly and it was really.
- 9:29Speaker 3: A detective show.
- 9:31Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 9:31Speaker 3: And it was a drama and it's, it was so
- 9:34Speaker 3: perfectly done.
- 9:35Speaker 2: It's crazy. And it, but it's still a superhero show, right?
- 9:38Speaker 2: Like it's still that, but I would.
- 9:40Speaker 1: Call it a comic book show. It's definitely a comic
- 9:42Speaker 1: book show.
- 9:42Speaker 2: Yeah, definitely a comic book show, but it, and it's
- 9:44Speaker 2: done so well. Um, and I just really appreciate them
- 9:48Speaker 2: for how they did it.
- 9:49Speaker 3: Right.
- 9:49Speaker 2: Cause it, The lantern and the ring is such a
- 9:52Speaker 2: cool power and it couldn't get out of hand with
- 9:55Speaker 2: CGI as we've seen.
- 9:56Speaker 1: Yeah, we've seen.
- 9:59Speaker 3: Other things that we will not mention. The movie that
- 10:02Speaker 3: shall not be named.
- 10:04Speaker 1: Uh, and so that really, that really set Green Lantern
- 10:07Speaker 1: back quite a long, you know, thing. Right.
- 10:09Speaker 2: And, and, and it can get so out of hand
- 10:11Speaker 2: in the wrong ways. And they really, they really did
- 10:13Speaker 2: this well. So the scene with Sinestro, right. We, we
- 10:16Speaker 2: find out that Noah is the one who broke him
- 10:18Speaker 2: out and Noah broke him out because it was really
- 10:21Speaker 2: the nature version of Noah, right? The, the, the part
- 10:24Speaker 2: of Noah that is thinking of power and taking over
- 10:27Speaker 2: the world. And he's like, Oh, it could be easy.
- 10:29Speaker 2: I could go to Annapolis and be a football star.
- 10:31Speaker 2: And I could, be in politics. And then from there
- 10:34Speaker 2: I'm the president and all these things. And that side
- 10:36Speaker 2: of him is like, I can also get a ring
- 10:39Speaker 2: and have Sinestro make me a lantern. And then I
- 10:41Speaker 2: can defend myself against the lanterns this way.
- 10:44Speaker 3: And so he breaks.
- 10:45Speaker 2: Sinestro out, has him, has Sinestro make him a lantern.
- 10:49Speaker 2: Now Sinestro makes this lantern on Anton's planet, which obviously
- 10:54Speaker 2: has been decimated, but Anton's planet is full of this fear, right?
- 10:57Speaker 2: This like poison that Zoe had put into it. to,
- 11:01Speaker 2: you know, of course, like create this chaotic event. And
- 11:04Speaker 2: so this lantern has like these yellow streaks throughout it,
- 11:08Speaker 2: these yellow cracks, if you will. So my question is,
- 11:11Speaker 2: is this the yellow lantern thing you were talking about
- 11:13Speaker 2: earlier on the podcast?
- 11:15Speaker 3: Couple episodes ago.
- 11:16Speaker 1: Yeah it really felt like that this is what they
- 11:18Speaker 1: were leaning into when they first introduced this this do-it-yourself
- 11:22Speaker 1: uh lantern that sinestro had made it has these yellow
- 11:26Speaker 1: streaks john even calls it out when uh sinestro asks
- 11:29Speaker 1: tells him like tell me what you see like what
- 11:31Speaker 1: do you think it is right um and he says
- 11:33Speaker 1: i think it's fear and like this this feels like
- 11:36Speaker 1: such a cool origin for this universe to to give
- 11:40Speaker 1: birth to the yellow lanterns, which does not seem to
- 11:42Speaker 1: be a thing yet, based on who Sinestro is at
- 11:44Speaker 1: this current point in time, and based on what this prototype, perhaps,
- 11:49Speaker 1: yellow lantern is. I was surprised when it turned out
- 11:52Speaker 1: to be a green lantern at the end, but maybe
- 11:56Speaker 1: it's only a matter of time, because as Sinestro said,
- 11:58Speaker 1: fear is a more powerful weapon than you could possibly imagine.
- 12:01Speaker 2: So maybe it's possible it turns into a yellow lantern
- 12:04Speaker 2: over time, as Jon uses it.
- 12:05Speaker 1: Possibly, yeah.
- 12:07Speaker 3: And I think it's Sinestro who has it.
- 12:09Speaker 1: Maybe there will be more cracks in the lantern at
- 12:11Speaker 1: some point that reveal more fear, right?
- 12:13Speaker 2: And I think it's Sinestro that says this quote during
- 12:16Speaker 2: the episode, correct me if I'm wrong, but he says,
- 12:18Speaker 2: don't be afraid to be afraid.
- 12:19Speaker 1: Don't be afraid to be afraid. I think it's actually
- 12:21Speaker 1: Hal who says it. Hal says that.
- 12:23Speaker 3: I think you're right.
- 12:24Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 12:25Speaker 2: But it's such a great moment and a great quote, right?
- 12:28Speaker 2: For someone like Jon Stewart, who is brought up to
- 12:31Speaker 2: not be afraid at all, right? But now he's getting
- 12:33Speaker 2: this new lantern from Sinestro that has some fear embedded
- 12:37Speaker 2: into it, right?
- 12:38Speaker 3: So you have to embrace that.
- 12:41Speaker 1: Well, like what I what I love about this, this
- 12:43Speaker 1: is actually something you and I talked about in our
- 12:45Speaker 1: I think it was our second episode of covering lanterns.
- 12:49Speaker 1: And it was we were talking about John's story and
- 12:53Speaker 1: how it is so rooted in in trying to be fearless, right?
- 12:57Speaker 1: And the fear that came along with trying to be fearless.
- 13:01Speaker 1: And what we brought up about that then was there's
- 13:04Speaker 1: a very similar story about this already in Green Lanterns.
- 13:07Speaker 1: And it's about Jessica Cruz, who's this other Green Lantern
- 13:11Speaker 1: who is a very scared... She's the scared lantern. Right.
- 13:14Speaker 1: But it's it's in her ability to find courage. Right.
- 13:19Speaker 1: To overcome her fears that gives her power. Right. It's
- 13:22Speaker 1: not being fearless, but being courageous. And you can't be
- 13:26Speaker 1: courageous without facing your fears. And that's what that feels like.
- 13:30Speaker 1: That's what John is leaning into right now. I embrace
- 13:32Speaker 1: my fears. He's being courageous. He's being brave. And there's
- 13:35Speaker 1: a power in that. So I really think that there's
- 13:38Speaker 1: I really love the the nuance of that and the
- 13:41Speaker 1: wording that they choose of embracing fear. And I love
- 13:44Speaker 1: that that is kind of the climax of this episode.
- 13:47Speaker 1: And it's not this big CGI fight that we were
- 13:50Speaker 1: talking about. It's really just this exchange of ideas and
- 13:52Speaker 1: beliefs and ways of characters moving forward. And the reason
- 13:57Speaker 1: why I bring that up, Nick, and I really want
- 13:58Speaker 1: to stress that is, you know, earlier in this episode,
- 14:00Speaker 1: I was talking about how not all superhero shows do this.
- 14:04Speaker 1: And like, there are some really good superhero shows out
- 14:08Speaker 1: there that I think weigh themselves down by forcing themselves
- 14:12Speaker 1: to have this like big CGI fight climax that is
- 14:15Speaker 1: not always necessary. And I cannot think of a better example.
- 14:19Speaker 1: than wandavision uh i love wandavision i think wandavision is
- 14:23Speaker 1: a damn near perfect show i loved every episode of
- 14:27Speaker 1: it until the finale and i think if you love
- 14:30Speaker 1: the finale like that's i love that for you what
- 14:34Speaker 1: i don't like about.
- 14:34Speaker 2: The point i like the finale but now that you're
- 14:37Speaker 2: talking about i can see what you mean right because
- 14:39Speaker 2: that that finale comes out of nowhere.
- 14:42Speaker 1: And that's not what the show was it's not.
- 14:44Speaker 2: What the show was yeah you're right it it basically
- 14:47Speaker 2: like that but you know but.
- 14:50Speaker 3: So let me explain. The thing about WandaVision though.
- 14:52Speaker 2: Like it was suppressing, she was like suppressing her powers.
- 14:56Speaker 2: She was also kind of having her powers suppressed throughout
- 14:59Speaker 2: that whole show.
- 14:59Speaker 1: Yeah, sure.
- 15:00Speaker 2: So like that finale is almost like the cathartic, like
- 15:04Speaker 2: finally I realize what I've done and I'm free.
- 15:07Speaker 3: And so it makes sense, I think, but I get
- 15:10Speaker 3: what you're saying.
- 15:11Speaker 1: So like, let me fully explain the thought, right? So like, yes,
- 15:15Speaker 1: you're totally right about like, it's all out there now.
- 15:18Speaker 1: Now it's just chaos, right? But I think you can
- 15:20Speaker 1: still do that.
- 15:22Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 15:22Speaker 1: With emotional drama and words, you know, like I think
- 15:27Speaker 1: the idea of her losing her children at the end
- 15:30Speaker 1: is enough of an emotional weight and crux for that
- 15:34Speaker 1: episode to have a really good climax. I love the
- 15:36Speaker 1: final conversation that she has with her kids. and the
- 15:38Speaker 1: conversation she has with Vision at the end. It's really good,
- 15:41Speaker 1: it's really well written. You know what I don't like?
- 15:43Speaker 1: The Dragon Ball Z fight that happens with her and
- 15:47Speaker 1: Agatha that is just so unnecessary. The other fights that
- 15:51Speaker 1: are going on with the other characters, Vision versus Vision.
- 15:54Speaker 1: I don't know, it's a lot. It's a lot. And
- 15:57Speaker 1: that show did such a great job with mystery. OK,
- 16:01Speaker 1: you ready for this? With mystery, with characters and emotional drama.
- 16:05Speaker 1: What else? What other show did that really well without
- 16:08Speaker 1: a Dragon Ball Z fight at the end? Lanterns. Dude,
- 16:10Speaker 1: I'm just saying if that's what your whole show is
- 16:13Speaker 1: and then the fight comes out of nowhere at the end,
- 16:15Speaker 1: it feels a little forced. And I'm not saying it's bad.
- 16:18Speaker 1: I'm just saying I personally think that that show could
- 16:21Speaker 1: have been a lot better without it. Yeah.
- 16:23Speaker 3: And Lanterns obviously like crushed it. They did phenomenally. And
- 16:27Speaker 3: I mean, the stream, the numbers show it.
- 16:29Speaker 2: Cause I saw a stat that I think the last episode,
- 16:32Speaker 2: like rivaled Game of Thrones finale or some like viewership wise,
- 16:35Speaker 2: like the viewership has been really strong and it honestly
- 16:39Speaker 2: deserves it. Cause the show's really well done. Speaking of
- 16:41Speaker 2: themes and fear and kind of like some callbacks, if
- 16:45Speaker 2: you will.
- 16:46Speaker 3: Hmm. what do you think about the scene with John
- 16:49Speaker 3: and Noah? Right.
- 16:50Speaker 2: John gets back from Anton's planet. Noah is like, Noah's essentially.
- 16:55Speaker 1: Like ready for him. He kicks the crap out of the.
- 16:57Speaker 3: Crap out of them.
- 16:57Speaker 2: But then he's like, can you drive? Can you drive
- 17:01Speaker 2: me to foot my football game, dad? And, but they
- 17:05Speaker 2: had this.
- 17:06Speaker 3: Conversation, right.
- 17:06Speaker 2: About John and Zoe and Noah and his nature versus
- 17:10Speaker 2: nurture and what he is and what he wants. And
- 17:14Speaker 2: Noah asked John, like, who he is and gives you
- 17:17Speaker 2: know they have this like really crazy heart to heart
- 17:19Speaker 2: and at the end of it all noah gives up
- 17:21Speaker 2: the ring like john gave up the.
- 17:23Speaker 1: Ring oh yeah yeah good reflection there yeah.
- 17:25Speaker 2: I just thought that that was really cool that the
- 17:28Speaker 2: show did that right like this ring has been tossed
- 17:31Speaker 2: around at this point between characters.
- 17:34Speaker 3: And who is gonna who's gonna take it who is
- 17:36Speaker 3: going to.
- 17:37Speaker 2: Choose it right and at the end of the show
- 17:40Speaker 2: of course john chooses the ring right it's not the
- 17:42Speaker 2: other way around anymore and not at least not in
- 17:44Speaker 2: this case he is choosing the ring and he's.
- 17:47Speaker 1: Choosing which to your point which is goes back to
- 17:51Speaker 1: that conversation that they were having about nature versus nurture
- 17:54Speaker 1: and john says you know i used to fight that
- 17:56Speaker 1: you know where does my programming begin where do i
- 17:59Speaker 1: end right and and he mentions uh the fact that
- 18:03Speaker 1: i can even ask that question shows that i am
- 18:07Speaker 1: me i am who i am beyond my programming right So, yeah, no,
- 18:11Speaker 1: you're so right for them to both have that moment
- 18:14Speaker 1: where he gives up the ring. He gives up the
- 18:16Speaker 1: idea of power and he chooses to just play football.
- 18:19Speaker 1: I just want to go play football with these with
- 18:22Speaker 1: these people that I like, these people that I love. Right.
- 18:25Speaker 2: And this moment, I think, is really important for John
- 18:27Speaker 2: to see Noah do, because even though Noah wants John
- 18:30Speaker 2: to kill him, John's choosing not to. John is going
- 18:32Speaker 2: to do the opposite of what Hal did. John's going
- 18:34Speaker 2: to actually give him a chance.
- 18:35Speaker 3: Right.
- 18:36Speaker 2: And, and he's going to get, he's going to give
- 18:38Speaker 2: him the opportunity to like, choose to like go against
- 18:41Speaker 2: his programming and be the human and be a human. Um,
- 18:45Speaker 2: one question I have is with, when, when Hal and
- 18:48Speaker 2: Carrie are having the conversation on the bleachers and Hal
- 18:53Speaker 2: says like, Noah's planning something big. We don't know what
- 18:56Speaker 2: that actually is. Or what did Hal just mean? Like, no,
- 19:02Speaker 2: Hal had seen some of, like Noah's planning for the
- 19:05Speaker 2: nature side.
- 19:06Speaker 1: Right.
- 19:06Speaker 3: Which is like the world domination side.
- 19:08Speaker 1: Like, I think it's more so that, okay. Um, I,
- 19:11Speaker 1: I think he, I, a, he's shocked to find out
- 19:14Speaker 1: that this kid is, is a man hunter. Right. So
- 19:17Speaker 1: he's already like on edge and on alert.
- 19:20Speaker 3: Sure.
- 19:20Speaker 1: Um, but then he sees something that he didn't even
- 19:23Speaker 1: know was going, was possible. Right. His former mentor, who
- 19:26Speaker 1: is a prisoner who's being forced to create a janky
- 19:29Speaker 1: do it yourself lantern. Right. Um, and, and, that this
- 19:33Speaker 1: is a grasp for not just power, but like ultimate power, right?
- 19:38Speaker 1: Like this kid will be unstoppable once he has this
- 19:41Speaker 1: ring and uses his charisma and other Manhunter attributes to
- 19:45Speaker 1: work his way through the chains of power on Earth, right?
- 19:48Speaker 1: So like he's seeing the problem. he's seeing uh the
- 19:51Speaker 1: path that noah's on and he's freaking out about it
- 19:54Speaker 1: at least that's what i took from it i don't
- 19:55Speaker 1: know if it was anything more specific than that.
- 19:57Speaker 2: No i think i think that's right i just wanted
- 19:59Speaker 2: to get your take on it too because i was
- 20:01Speaker 2: like are they leaving something kind of door open noah
- 20:03Speaker 2: wise but they i mean they are because anything can
- 20:06Speaker 2: happen with noah he has to continue to choose nurture
- 20:08Speaker 2: right he can't just It's not like he chooses it
- 20:11Speaker 2: once and it's fine. He's just he's going to have
- 20:12Speaker 2: this constant battle for a while until he gets to
- 20:15Speaker 2: the moment like John, where John is like officially not
- 20:18Speaker 2: thinking about his programming anymore. Right.
- 20:20Speaker 3: Yeah. Hopefully Noah gets to a point where that's the
- 20:22Speaker 3: case and John's going to give him that opportunity, which
- 20:24Speaker 3: is really.
- 20:24Speaker 1: I have a question for you that I think is
- 20:26Speaker 1: a fun question. So you're right. The ratings for the
- 20:29Speaker 1: show are pretty high. Um, and most of the people
- 20:33Speaker 1: that I talk about this show really have loved it.
- 20:35Speaker 1: I have loved this show. I've loved this. You and
- 20:37Speaker 1: I both like, since we both saw the first episode,
- 20:39Speaker 1: the end of episode one, we texted each other and
- 20:41Speaker 1: we were like, whole crap. This is on a different level.
- 20:44Speaker 1: This is really exciting.
- 20:45Speaker 3: This is cool.
- 20:46Speaker 1: Um, there, there's a discourse online that I think is
- 20:49Speaker 1: really interesting. And it's from a section of the green
- 20:53Speaker 1: lantern fandom. Right. Uh, and, uh, I think of the
- 20:57Speaker 1: more polite criticism that is put out there, there's some
- 21:01Speaker 1: really mean criticism, but of the more polite criticism that
- 21:04Speaker 1: is put out there from like hardcore Green Lantern fans
- 21:08Speaker 1: expressing disappointment about this show because in the comics, there's
- 21:14Speaker 1: so much more about space exploration, about seeing other aliens,
- 21:18Speaker 1: exploring the other emotional spectrum, right? There's this whole deep
- 21:22Speaker 1: lore of Green Lantern, right? that really does not get
- 21:26Speaker 1: explored in a tremendous way. And I wanted to bring
- 21:29Speaker 1: that to your attention here, Nick. I know you've seen
- 21:31Speaker 1: the comments. I know you know what I'm talking about,
- 21:33Speaker 1: but I wanted to get your take on this because
- 21:36Speaker 1: I think the show as a show is phenomenal. I
- 21:39Speaker 1: really do. A Green Lantern fan who's been a Green
- 21:42Speaker 1: Lantern fan their entire life and after the Ryan Reynolds
- 21:44Speaker 1: debacle from years ago, you get a James Gunn and
- 21:48Speaker 1: HBO funding. It's going to be a Sunday nine o'clock show.
- 21:52Speaker 1: That's very exciting. and you get a true detective version
- 21:57Speaker 1: of Green Lantern, what do you think about people's disappointment?
- 22:01Speaker 1: At least in this section of the fandom. What's your
- 22:05Speaker 1: take on that?
- 22:06Speaker 2: I mean, I get it, right? If you're a huge
- 22:09Speaker 2: Lantern comic book fan, you want that story and those stories,
- 22:14Speaker 2: and you want the lore and the details that go
- 22:18Speaker 2: with that. But I also think you have to think
- 22:20Speaker 2: about where we are in the world with superhero fatigue.
- 22:25Speaker 2: and there's a reason that disney and martin the mcu
- 22:28Speaker 2: backed off from 10 movies a year to like three
- 22:32Speaker 2: and from five shows to maybe one right and it's
- 22:36Speaker 2: too much was happening and there's a dc was in
- 22:41Speaker 2: a horrible horrible place like not half of their movies
- 22:45Speaker 2: were horrendous most of them were not great maybe one
- 22:48Speaker 2: or two hit right and like That's not a good
- 22:52Speaker 2: place to start if you're James Gunn, right? You come
- 22:54Speaker 2: from super successful Guardians films in the MCU, and now
- 22:59Speaker 2: you're in control of the DC Universe. You don't have
- 23:03Speaker 2: the time or the runway to put out anything bad, right?
- 23:10Speaker 2: Maybe you get one that's not good, right? I haven't
- 23:12Speaker 2: even seen Supergirl yet. I haven't heard great things, right?
- 23:15Speaker 2: Maybe Supergirl's the one mulligan you get that's not great, right?
- 23:19Speaker 1: It's okay. People were a little too harsh on it
- 23:21Speaker 1: when it came out.
- 23:22Speaker 3: Okay, cool.
- 23:23Speaker 1: That's my take.
- 23:24Speaker 3: No, I mean, it's probably fine. But you don't get.
- 23:27Speaker 2: He's not going to have runway to fail. And so
- 23:30Speaker 2: you have to do it right. And you also have
- 23:32Speaker 2: to do it right for the world that we currently
- 23:33Speaker 2: live in.
- 23:34Speaker 3: And what do people want?
- 23:36Speaker 2: And when you're talking about lanterns, and you're talking about
- 23:39Speaker 2: what people already know about lanterns who maybe haven't read the.
- 23:41Speaker 3: Comics, it's unfortunately.
- 23:44Speaker 2: that terrible Brian Reynolds movie that he still makes fun
- 23:46Speaker 2: of as an MCU character in Deadpool.
- 23:49Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah. So that's a problem.
- 23:50Speaker 3: So you have to beat that. And how do you
- 23:52Speaker 3: beat that?
- 23:53Speaker 2: You give people a show that is driven by characters
- 23:56Speaker 2: and writing that is not overdone on CGI with crazy,
- 24:01Speaker 2: powerful superhero battles, right? You get one big explosive one, right,
- 24:06Speaker 2: in episode five, but it's really more about a small
- 24:08Speaker 2: town defending their small town. There's not really a lot
- 24:10Speaker 2: of Green Lantern stuff there. So you have to do
- 24:14Speaker 2: it this way, I think. Now, you can build up
- 24:16Speaker 2: to what everyone wants to do.
- 24:18Speaker 1: Oh, I think they're gonna. Yeah, I think they're going to.
- 24:20Speaker 3: Obviously, right?
- 24:21Speaker 2: I mean, now we've got two lanterns. We've got one
- 24:23Speaker 2: for Earth or Dirt, and you've got one for the
- 24:26Speaker 2: stars and Guy Gardner. And now you can play. You
- 24:29Speaker 2: can pick and choose, right? Like, where do you go
- 24:31Speaker 2: next in season two, right? You can go both places
- 24:34Speaker 2: and you can.
- 24:35Speaker 1: Or if we're just going straight for a Green Lantern movie, man.
- 24:37Speaker 3: Or that. I mean, whatever. You can do it. You
- 24:39Speaker 3: can do it now. Right.
- 24:40Speaker 2: Because you kind of set it up and you've got
- 24:42Speaker 2: people invested in these characters and you can open it
- 24:45Speaker 2: up from here. But you have to start somewhere to
- 24:47Speaker 2: bring everybody in. And I think they did it super well.
- 24:51Speaker 2: So I think if you're a huge.
- 24:52Speaker 3: Comic book Green Lantern fan and you're like, I want more,
- 24:55Speaker 3: you're going to get more.
- 24:56Speaker 2: Because this show had insane viewership. Don't worry, it's not canceled.
- 25:00Speaker 2: So you're going to get more.
- 25:01Speaker 3: Just got to be a little bit more patient.
- 25:03Speaker 1: Yeah, that's how I agree. I think you're absolutely right.
- 25:06Speaker 1: I actually think you nailed it. You know, the only
- 25:09Speaker 1: other thing I would add is James Gunn clearly is
- 25:14Speaker 1: looking for DC projects that are coming across as very
- 25:18Speaker 1: creative and original ideas. I mean, like, look at what
- 25:21Speaker 1: the next movie is coming out. It's Clayface. Like, we
- 25:24Speaker 1: have a horror movie comic book representing the DC universe
- 25:27Speaker 1: coming out next, you know? Yeah. Yeah, wild. But exciting.
- 25:33Speaker 1: You know, it's a breath of fresh air. And Lantern's...
- 25:37Speaker 1: was that for me at least you know i can't
- 25:39Speaker 1: speak for everyone but like you know clearly this show
- 25:41Speaker 1: resonated with a healthy portion of the population um i
- 25:45Speaker 1: think that that mystery that intrigue and like the character
- 25:49Speaker 1: chemistry between hal and john what a great journey those
- 25:52Speaker 1: two got to go on you know it's gonna be
- 25:55Speaker 1: at each other's throats to saying i love you like
- 25:57Speaker 1: yeah awesome.
- 25:58Speaker 2: It's gonna be sad not to see him it would
- 26:00Speaker 2: be a nice surprise if somehow hologram ends up being
- 26:04Speaker 2: like stewart's sidekick.
- 26:05Speaker 1: Bro i was convinced Hal was coming back to life
- 26:09Speaker 1: in this episode. I was like, it's 100% happening.
- 26:12Speaker 3: There was a moment where I was like.
- 26:13Speaker 1: And it did not go there.
- 26:14Speaker 3: Sinestro mentioned they could bring Hal back to life, which
- 26:16Speaker 3: means he probably could still do that.
- 26:19Speaker 1: Yeah, definitely. If Hal still exists, right? If the hologram
- 26:23Speaker 1: still exists.
- 26:24Speaker 2: Right.
- 26:24Speaker 3: So.
- 26:26Speaker 2: I mean, who knows? I don't think that's where they're
- 26:28Speaker 2: going to go. But there was a moment right where
- 26:30Speaker 2: I was like, maybe they are going to bring him back.
- 26:32Speaker 2: I'm glad they didn't, at least not yet.
- 26:34Speaker 1: I am too. It ended perfectly between the two of them.
- 26:38Speaker 2: Yeah. And I think the way that it ended, it
- 26:39Speaker 2: would be almost a shame if they did bring him
- 26:41Speaker 2: back maybe now because it kind of maybe knocks back
- 26:44Speaker 2: the feeling on how it ended.
- 26:45Speaker 1: But I would only accept it in one way. And
- 26:48Speaker 1: that's if somehow Sinestro has access to a hologram and
- 26:54Speaker 1: and revives him and Hal is a yellow lantern. And
- 26:58Speaker 1: that's our big bad for John, right? John versus Hal again. Uh,
- 27:01Speaker 1: but this time they both got rings. They're both going
- 27:03Speaker 1: to have a round two. Um, that sounds awesome. I,
- 27:07Speaker 1: I doubt that's what we're doing, but like, man, I'm
- 27:10Speaker 1: on board.
- 27:10Speaker 3: If it is, that would be insane.
- 27:12Speaker 1: Um, see, that's the comic book nerd in me. I
- 27:14Speaker 1: want that. That sounds awesome. But the film version of
- 27:16Speaker 1: me loves this.
- 27:18Speaker 3: I love it. So, uh, We have to talk about
- 27:20Speaker 3: the oath before we get there.
- 27:21Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 27:21Speaker 3: I think we'll probably end at the oath. Cameo. There
- 27:24Speaker 3: was an insane cameo.
- 27:25Speaker 2: And I was like, when I saw the cameo, I
- 27:27Speaker 2: sat up like the Leonardo DiCaprio meme.
- 27:29Speaker 3: I was like, oh, this guy.
- 27:32Speaker 2: Did you get it?
- 27:32Speaker 3: No.
- 27:33Speaker 1: All right. So before the episode started, Nick asked me
- 27:35Speaker 1: if I saw anything in the football game. And I
- 27:38Speaker 1: was like, oh, the colors of the uniform. And he
- 27:40Speaker 1: laughed at me. And so I'm assuming that this is
- 27:42Speaker 1: what you're referring to. It was not the uniforms.
- 27:46Speaker 2: So Carrie's talking about all the college scouts that are
- 27:50Speaker 2: at the game. And she goes, Nebraska, head coach of
- 27:53Speaker 2: Nebraska is here. They cut to the head coach of Nebraska.
- 27:56Speaker 2: The actual head coach of the Nebraska Cornhuskers, Matt Ruhle,
- 28:00Speaker 2: is in the episode.
- 28:02Speaker 1: That's pretty cool.
- 28:04Speaker 3: They got, they got Matt rule to freaking do a cameo.
- 28:07Speaker 2: And not even that he is on the field after
- 28:09Speaker 2: the game and hands Noah, the hat with the Nebraska
- 28:13Speaker 2: logo on it. And he puts the hat on and
- 28:15Speaker 2: he's like recruiting him live on this in the game.
- 28:17Speaker 3: Like after the game.
- 28:18Speaker 1: Oh yeah. That went right over my head. I had
- 28:20Speaker 1: no idea.
- 28:21Speaker 3: That was cool. I was like, Holy shit. They got
- 28:23Speaker 3: Matt rule to do this.
- 28:24Speaker 1: It's insane.
- 28:25Speaker 3: Shoot the show in Nebraska. Like it was easy for
- 28:28Speaker 3: him to come over. Like what are they doing?
- 28:30Speaker 1: Um, Yeah. Anything, anything football college football would have like
- 28:35Speaker 1: flown right over my head. Uh, thank you for catching this.
- 28:38Speaker 3: That was a cool cameo. I really appreciated that. Matt rules.
- 28:41Speaker 3: Awesome for doing that. That's like, I mean, it probably
- 28:43Speaker 3: helps him recruiting wise.
- 28:44Speaker 1: That's just, it's just cool. Maybe he's a fan. Maybe
- 28:48Speaker 1: he's a lantern fan.
- 28:49Speaker 3: Yeah, maybe whatever. That was an awesome cameo. So I
- 28:52Speaker 3: really appreciated that detail.
- 28:54Speaker 1: Um, I just thought it was cool that the uniforms
- 28:56Speaker 1: were green and yellow. Yeah. I didn't realize that until
- 29:01Speaker 1: this episode. I was like, Oh, look at that.
- 29:03Speaker 3: There you go. All right. John's oath. Do you have
- 29:09Speaker 3: anything else before we, before we end with this?
- 29:10Speaker 2: No, no, no.
- 29:11Speaker 1: Let's, let's go to John's oath, man. The custom oath.
- 29:14Speaker 2: So at first I thought we weren't going to get
- 29:17Speaker 2: the oath because they, they like, they showed him charging
- 29:20Speaker 2: up the ring and then they cut to him, like
- 29:22Speaker 2: seeing his family and coming back home and all this stuff.
- 29:25Speaker 2: And then at the very end of the episode, they
- 29:27Speaker 2: come back. And cause like, you kind of knew he
- 29:29Speaker 2: wasn't going to, he couldn't do the same oath. He
- 29:30Speaker 2: had to create his own, right? He had to create
- 29:33Speaker 2: his own version because he's an independent contractor and he's
- 29:35Speaker 2: choosing the ring, not the other way around. He's not
- 29:37Speaker 2: part of the Lantern Corps, right? And they say this
- 29:39Speaker 2: at the end Yeah, that was really cool. Which is
- 29:52Speaker 2: a really cool thing to think about. And so we
- 29:54Speaker 2: had to choose his own oath. And so we go
- 29:56Speaker 2: in his choices in brightest day and darkest night. I
- 29:59Speaker 2: embrace my fear. I'll do what's right. I choose this ring.
- 30:03Speaker 3: I choose this fight in service to this lantern's light.
- 30:07Speaker 1: Very cool. Yeah. And I mean, it goes right to
- 30:10Speaker 1: that lesson that he's learned of nature versus nurture. Right.
- 30:13Speaker 1: That this is who he is. This is who he
- 30:15Speaker 1: chooses to be. And he chooses this fight. Right. to
- 30:19Speaker 1: be Earth's defender as Green Lantern. This is something he
- 30:22Speaker 1: actually wants, right? There was that fear from episode seven
- 30:25Speaker 1: where he sees his inner child and his inner child says,
- 30:28Speaker 1: you're too afraid to admit you didn't want to be
- 30:30Speaker 1: the Green Lantern, right? You're scared about it. You can't
- 30:34Speaker 1: say it. And he screams at him that that's not true.
- 30:36Speaker 1: Maybe it was a little true. He was afraid to
- 30:38Speaker 1: be afraid, right? Don't be afraid to be afraid.
- 30:42Speaker 3: Yeah, don't be afraid to be afraid. Awesome. What a show.
- 30:45Speaker 3: If you haven't watched Lanterns yet and you just watched.
- 30:48Speaker 1: This episode- What a way to experience it.
- 30:50Speaker 3: What a way to experience it. We apologize for the spoilers.
- 30:54Speaker 3: It doesn't matter. You can still go back and watch
- 30:55Speaker 3: the show. It's awesome.
- 30:56Speaker 1: Oh, yeah. We didn't do it justice. It's amazing.
- 30:58Speaker 3: It's crazy. Any final thoughts?
- 31:00Speaker 1: No, man. I am just really, really glad that Earl
- 31:05Speaker 1: is okay.
- 31:06Speaker 3: Earl is okay. And you know what we look forward to?
- 31:09Speaker 3: We get to see... We haven't seen Jon Stewart in
- 31:11Speaker 3: a suit yet. So, suit it up. So true.
- 31:13Speaker 1: I'm actually shocked it didn't end that way. I was
- 31:16Speaker 1: waiting for that moment. So.
- 31:18Speaker 3: That's kind of fun, right? That's something to look forward to.
- 31:20Speaker 2: Like, what is his, you know, I mean, we have
- 31:21Speaker 2: an idea from comics what his suit's going to look like,
- 31:23Speaker 2: but obviously they'll give it something.
- 31:24Speaker 3: I mean, it's going to be different.
- 31:26Speaker 1: They'll give it something a little different. I mean, they
- 31:28Speaker 1: did with Guy Gardner. It was a little different.
- 31:30Speaker 3: So that'll be cool.
- 31:32Speaker 2: And it'll be interesting to see the next time we
- 31:33Speaker 2: see Guy Gardner, if he takes John's advice and takes
- 31:35Speaker 2: out the gold tooth or not.
- 31:36Speaker 1: It will be interesting. Wait for Man of Tomorrow for Superman.
- 31:42Speaker 1: See if we get Guy Gardner in there.
- 31:44Speaker 3: No gold tooth. Message received.
- 31:45Speaker 1: Yeah, gold toothless.
