- 0:09Hi,
- 0:09I'm Dr. Brenna Hicks,
- 0:10The Kid Counselor.
- 0:11This is the Play Therapy Parenting Podcast where I give you insight,
- 0:15awareness,
- 0:15and enlightenment about your parenting
- 0:17and your relationship with your kids.
- 0:20In today's episode,
- 0:20I am answering a question from Brianna,
- 0:23and this is about
- 0:25girls,
- 0:26siblings,
- 0:27daughters.
- 0:28And some of the behaviors
- 0:32that are struggles at home
- 0:33and just asking for some tips and strategies
- 0:36on how to navigate some of those difficulties.
- 0:39So Brianna,
- 0:40thank you so much for the email.
- 0:41I appreciate you reaching out.
- 0:43So let me read parts of what came in and then we'll dive in together.
- 0:47I'm a mom to a 9 and a 6 year old,
- 0:49and we're dealing with a lot of sass.
- 0:51Asking them to do chores or something else always turns into a fight.
- 0:55The girls fight constantly,
- 0:57and I'm struggling to manage it all.
- 0:58My 9 year old is smart but knows how to push my buttons,
- 1:01and I feel our relationship could be stronger.
- 1:04Maybe I'm too harsh.
- 1:05I push her to read and do math daily because I want her to succeed in school,
- 1:09unlike me.
- 1:10She's also very clingy,
- 1:12loves hugging kids and doesn't understand personal space.
- 1:15I've talked to her about respecting others' boundaries,
- 1:17but it's ongoing.
- 1:19She's also struggling with self-care.
- 1:20I'd appreciate some advice on how to tackle these issues.
- 1:24All right,
- 1:24so
- 1:25I know that probably Brianna to you feels like a whole bunch of
- 1:29very diverse and distinct issues.
- 1:33The interesting thing about
- 1:35perceiving kids' behavior in light of a funnel
- 1:38is you can almost funnel it down to one undercurrent,
- 1:42and what you're describing with your nine year old is power and control.
- 1:47So if we see everything through that lens,
- 1:49I think it will make this make a lot more sense and not feel so disjointed.
- 1:53So the fact that when you ask them to do something,
- 1:57you get sass,
- 1:58as you say,
- 1:58and it always turns into a fight,
- 2:00power and control grab.
- 2:02The fact that they're fighting with each other,
- 2:04power and control grab.
- 2:06The fact that she's pushing your buttons,
- 2:08power and control grab,
- 2:10the fact that she
- 2:11is clingy and doesn't understand personal space,
- 2:15power and control.
- 2:17And
- 2:18not wanting to do self-care routine
- 2:20and regimen,
- 2:21power and control.
- 2:23All right,
- 2:23so now let's
- 2:24tease this apart a little more.
- 2:26We know
- 2:27that kids only have control over 5 things.
- 2:31So
- 2:32when you're young.
- 2:34You really are told what,
- 2:36where,
- 2:36when,
- 2:36how,
- 2:37why
- 2:38to do everything.
- 2:40And so you can
- 2:42have some power,
- 2:43have some control
- 2:45with eating,
- 2:46sleeping,
- 2:47toileting,
- 2:49obeying.
- 2:51There's a limited set of options here and she's bringing all of them in.
- 2:56So,
- 2:57in light of that,
- 2:59one of the most important things that you can do is to give her lots of choices.
- 3:04Choice giving is going to be the antidote to the power struggle
- 3:07because if you consistently provide her with choices,
- 3:11you're OK
- 3:12with both choices that you offer.
- 3:15So you're this isn't carte blanche,
- 3:17she gets to do whatever she wants and she gets to rule the roost.
- 3:20That's the myth when parents hear about the choice giving concept,
- 3:23they're like,
- 3:24so kids just get to choose whatever they want to do all the time.
- 3:26No,
- 3:27it's within parameters and boundaries that you're comfortable with.
- 3:31So for example,
- 3:33if you ask her to
- 3:34do chores.
- 3:36And she doesn't want to.
- 3:37First,
- 3:37you're going to validate her feeling.
- 3:39Oh,
- 3:39you really don't want to empty the dishwasher right now.
- 3:42Hey,
- 3:43she needs to feel heard and understood.
- 3:44She's not wrong for not wanting to empty the dishes.
- 3:47Who does really?
- 3:48I know there's like a few of you that really like emptying the dishwasher,
- 3:51but like
- 3:52most of us would rather not.
- 3:54So
- 3:55if she
- 3:57says,
- 3:57I don't want to do that,
- 3:59OK,
- 3:59that can be perceived assass and power,
- 4:02but it's also her expressing that
- 4:05she just doesn't really enjoy it.
- 4:07So we're going to validate that.
- 4:08You really wish you didn't have to do that.
- 4:10You don't really like emptying the dishwasher.
- 4:13OK,
- 4:13it's a neutral acknowledgement.
- 4:15She's not wrong for feeling that way.
- 4:17Then you can give her an empowerment choice.
- 4:19You really don't want to do that,
- 4:20so you can choose to do it in 5 minutes,
- 4:23or you can choose to do it in 10 minutes.
- 4:25Which do you choose?
- 4:27Now,
- 4:28you
- 4:28are
- 4:29hypothetically,
- 4:31I'm,
- 4:31I'm air quoting because I would assume you would be OK
- 4:34with her doing it in 5 or 10 minutes.
- 4:36I'm pretty sure the goal is that the dishes get emptied.
- 4:40So if
- 4:42it's going to be a fight otherwise.
- 4:45Would you really care if she does it in 5 or 10 minutes?
- 4:48I suspect not.
- 4:49So you are OK with the parameters of the choice.
- 4:53But now you've given her a measure of control.
- 4:55Does she want to do it in 5 minutes or does she want to do it in 10 minutes?
- 4:59Now all of a sudden she's not going to fight for so much power and control
- 5:03and say,
- 5:04no,
- 5:04I absolutely refuse.
- 5:05I don't want to,
- 5:06you're the worst mom ever.
- 5:07She's going to say,
- 5:08I choose to do it in 10 minutes.
- 5:11And the beauty of choice giving is when a child chooses.
- 5:16From two options
- 5:18there is automatic buy-in.
- 5:20There's automatic ownership.
- 5:22If she says I choose 10 minutes.
- 5:24When the 10 minutes are up,
- 5:26if she says anything other than,
- 5:29OK,
- 5:29I'll go do the dishes now,
- 5:31you're just going to say,
- 5:33You still don't want to do them,
- 5:34but you chose to do them in 10 minutes,
- 5:36and it's been 10 minutes.
- 5:39Yeah,
- 5:39but I just,
- 5:39I wanna keep doing this.
- 5:40You wish you could keep doing that,
- 5:42but it's been 10 minutes and you chose to do it in 10 minutes,
- 5:45so it's time to do the dishes now.
- 5:48So if you can continue to provide choices and then you fall back on the choice.
- 5:54There's going to be a natural ownership that comes
- 5:58from her making decisions and she has a measure of power,
- 6:01so she will not power struggle as much.
- 6:03Same thing with the hygiene and the self-care.
- 6:07You can choose to have me brush your hair,
- 6:09or you can choose to brush your hair,
- 6:10which do you choose?
- 6:12You can choose to use this toothpaste to brush your teeth,
- 6:15or you can choose to use this toothpaste to brush your teeth,
- 6:18which do you choose?
- 6:20You're just going to put choices in place as much as possible.
- 6:23It doesn't work if you don't say choose 3 times though.
- 6:27So if you say,
- 6:28do you want to use this toothpaste or this toothpaste?
- 6:31That's not a choice.
- 6:33It has to be very clear that you're giving her a choice,
- 6:35so you're gonna say the word choose 3 times.
- 6:38Do you choose to use this toothpaste or do you choose to use this toothpaste,
- 6:41which do you choose?
- 6:43And over time,
- 6:45she is going to realize she does not have to fight for so much power and control,
- 6:50because
- 6:50you're constantly giving her measures of power and control.
- 6:55And it will naturally reduce the power struggles.
- 6:57My final thought for you,
- 6:59Brianna,
- 6:59is you said
- 7:01I.
- 7:03I am constantly pushing her to read and do math.
- 7:06I want her to succeed.
- 7:07Maybe I'm too harsh.
- 7:09A lot of times we try to make up
- 7:12for things that we wish were different for ourselves
- 7:15in the way that we parent our kids we're
- 7:16trying to break a cycle we're trying to stop dysfunction
- 7:20we're trying to change the trajectory
- 7:23because we didn't like
- 7:24our childhood or what we experienced,
- 7:26so we're trying to change that for our kids
- 7:28and that's a noble pursuit.
- 7:31The balance
- 7:32is understanding adulthood bias.
- 7:35Kids are not rational.
- 7:37Kids are not cognitive.
- 7:39They don't have abstract reasoning.
- 7:42They're not going to think their way through anything.
- 7:46So one of the things that we need to do
- 7:49is understand that they are completely emotional and experiential.
- 7:53She's a big feeler.
- 7:54I can tell by what you're describing.
- 7:57She feels things deeply.
- 7:58She's sensitive.
- 8:00Adulthood bias wants her to think
- 8:03and use her brain
- 8:05and to be logical and to be rational and understand personal space
- 8:08and want to read and do math because it's good for her.
- 8:12She's not gonna be any of those things because she's not an adult.
- 8:15That's our adulthood bias kicking in.
- 8:18So one of the things that we need to do is make sure we reflect her feelings
- 8:22as much as possible.
- 8:23She's a sensitive emotional kid.
- 8:26Do that with both of your girls,
- 8:27but specifically your 9 year old.
- 8:30And then further,
- 8:32devote at least 15 minutes.
- 8:35To just spending time with her
- 8:37to build the relationship
- 8:39because if you're concerned that you're a little bit too harsh,
- 8:43the repair for that
- 8:44is unconditional love and acceptance and quality time
- 8:48where you focus on the relationship
- 8:50and nothing else
- 8:52so budget in 15 minutes where you just are with her.
- 8:56You just do what she wants to do for 15 minutes.
- 9:00And if she wants to tell you something,
- 9:02if she wants to paint,
- 9:03she wants to draw,
- 9:04she wants to sing,
- 9:05she wants to show you a dance move,
- 9:07she wants to do a puzzle with you,
- 9:10whatever,
- 9:10it's just quality time.
- 9:1315 minutes doesn't have to be long.
- 9:15But what you're communicating is,
- 9:17I unconditionally love and accept you,
- 9:19and kids naturally behave in more self enhancing ways
- 9:23when they feel unconditionally loved and when the relationship
- 9:27is at the heart of the connection.
- 9:30So
- 9:32that's what I recommend.
- 9:34Those three
- 9:35things,
- 9:36provide choices as much as possible.
- 9:39Make sure that you're giving her 15 minutes of
- 9:42no agenda.
- 9:43I just want to be with you and focus on the relationship time.
- 9:47And reflect her feelings because she's a sensitive kid,
- 9:50understanding how adulthood bias is getting in the way.
- 9:53She's not gonna to think her way through things,
- 9:55she's not gonna be rational.
- 9:57You can talk to her all day long about boundaries,
- 9:59it doesn't mean anything.
- 10:01She feels,
- 10:02and when she feels she wants to give hugs.
- 10:06She doesn't know any better because she's not thinking about it.
- 10:09It's not purposeful,
- 10:10it's not manipulative.
- 10:12She's just emotional,
- 10:13so she's going to show you
- 10:15that she cares.
- 10:16She's gonna show her friends that she loves them by hugging them.
- 10:20That's the way that she's going to behave.
- 10:22She will naturally sorted out
- 10:24as she matures,
- 10:25as she grows,
- 10:26as she starts to have more objectivity.
- 10:29But don't let adulthood bias get in the way of the connection.
- 10:32That's what's going to make the biggest change.
- 10:35So Brianna,
- 10:36thank you so much for the question.
