- 0:03Speaker 1: It's the Happy Families podcast. It's the podcast for the
- 0:07Speaker 1: time poor parent who just wants answers now Well.
- 0:10Speaker 2: At school holidays in Brisbane, Kylie and I are doing
- 0:13Speaker 2: our best to spend some quality time with our kids
- 0:16Speaker 2: and we hope that you're getting to do the same.
- 0:18Speaker 2: The Happy Families podcast is going to continue to show
- 0:20Speaker 2: up in your feed during the holidays, but we are
- 0:22Speaker 2: kind of taking a break, which means that the content
- 0:24Speaker 2: is going to be light, simple and digestible. The idea
- 0:28Speaker 2: is that we're going to share with you one thought
- 0:31Speaker 2: that we reckon can make a difference in your family,
- 0:33Speaker 2: and then give you a challenge so that you can
- 0:35Speaker 2: practice it starting right now.
- 0:38Speaker 1: So what's our number one tip for the holidays?
- 0:40Speaker 2: I thought that we would start with my all time
- 0:42Speaker 2: favorite piece of advice. It's the pairing advice that I
- 0:44Speaker 2: give everybody all the time. So I'll often have parents
- 0:47Speaker 2: come to me there say I'm really struggling with my kids.
- 0:49Speaker 2: They're driving me crazy, especially during the school holidays. And
- 0:53Speaker 2: that might be because you're trying to juggle work and kids,
- 0:55Speaker 2: or you're working from home and trying to get emails
- 0:58Speaker 2: done while the kids are there, or whatever. It might be.
- 1:01Speaker 2: But my response every time is that I just said
- 1:04Speaker 2: to them, well, before we talk about anything that it
- 1:06Speaker 2: could be, just tell me about the last time that
- 1:08Speaker 2: you really spent good quality time with them, no interruptions,
- 1:14Speaker 2: no correction direction, just good quality time together or walk
- 1:18Speaker 2: in the park, maybe a camping trip, that kind of thing. Big,
- 1:21Speaker 2: little doesn't really matter. You know what most parents say
- 1:24Speaker 2: to me, they can't remember. No, they stay half an
- 1:27Speaker 2: hour ago. It's no, they do. They can't remember. They're like, oh, gee,
- 1:29Speaker 2: it's been a while, it's really been a while. When
- 1:33Speaker 2: I suggest that kids spell love t im and recommend
- 1:38Speaker 2: that those parents spend some time connecting, and then tell
- 1:40Speaker 2: them to email me and let me know how it goes, invariably,
- 1:44Speaker 2: within a pretty short time, I receive an update, and
- 1:46Speaker 2: it usually goes like this. We spend some time together
- 1:49Speaker 2: and it's made all the difference.
- 1:50Speaker 1: That reminds me of one of your quotables. Use it
- 1:52Speaker 1: all the time.
- 1:54Speaker 2: Yeah, Just like dollars of the currency of our economy,
- 1:57Speaker 2: connection is the currency of our relationships.
- 2:01Speaker 1: Yeah. I love that, and I love it because it
- 2:03Speaker 1: taps in beautifully with a quote that I read from
- 2:06Speaker 1: Brene Brown recently. She defines connection as the energy that
- 2:11Speaker 1: exists between people when they feel seen, heard, and valued.
- 2:15Speaker 1: And I just I love the visual that that provides
- 2:19Speaker 1: for me because you talk about connection and I know
- 2:22Speaker 1: what that kind of feels like. But when you actually
- 2:23Speaker 1: break it down into those three things that I actually
- 2:27Speaker 1: feel seen, I feel like you see me, you actually
- 2:30Speaker 1: see me, you hear me, and you value who I
- 2:34Speaker 1: am and the input that I give in day to
- 2:36Speaker 1: day life. That is so much more tangible for me.
- 2:40Speaker 2: And I think it's the secret of great relationships, either
- 2:42Speaker 2: in a couple relationship with your neighbors, with your colleagues
- 2:45Speaker 2: at work, but particularly with your kids. Connection is the
- 2:49Speaker 2: currency of your relationship. So our challenge for you on
- 2:53Speaker 2: day one of the Queensland school holidays. I hope that
- 2:55Speaker 2: you're on holidays too, regardless, our challenge for you today
- 2:59Speaker 2: is this.
- 3:00Speaker 1: We're challenging you to find one way to connect more
- 3:03Speaker 1: with your children.
- 3:04Speaker 2: Okay, so today, see them, hear them, value them, do
- 3:07Speaker 2: something with them, kids, spill love time. We really hope
- 3:10Speaker 2: that you enjoyed this quick little tip, this thought, this
- 3:13Speaker 2: provocation to help you to have a happier family during
- 3:16Speaker 2: the school holidays. The happy Families podcast, as always, is
