Latest / Halo Territory: A Los Angeles Angels Podcast / RAKING: Bottom of Angels order is the top of the heap in Freeway Series-salvaging win over Dodgers
Transcript
- 0:08Speaker 1: Blay Angel fans and welcome back to Halo territory. I
- 0:12Speaker 1: am Mike DiGiovanna, former La Times Baseball writer and host
- 0:15Speaker 1: of the show, joined by Mark Trumbull, the former Angels
- 0:19Speaker 1: slugger my regular co host. Well Mark, it Sunday afternoon.
- 0:23Speaker 1: We're taping The sun is out all as well in
- 0:28Speaker 1: Angels Land, at least for one day. How about that
- 0:32Speaker 1: game against the Dodgers today? These six through nine hitters
- 0:36Speaker 1: in the Angels lineup, Joe Adell, Nick Madrigal, Jose Siri
- 0:41Speaker 1: and Sebastian Rivero combined to go thirteen for fifteen with
- 0:46Speaker 1: ten runs, ten RBIs, a homer, and four walks in
- 0:51Speaker 1: Sundays thirteen to five win, which salvaged a three game
- 0:57Speaker 1: series Angels lost the first two games, and salvage one
- 0:59Speaker 1: win out of the six games against the Dodgers this year,
- 1:03Speaker 1: after the Angels, of course, famously went six and zero
- 1:08Speaker 1: against the Dodgers last year. Mark, what'd you see out
- 1:10Speaker 1: there today? And these at bats from the bottom of
- 1:13Speaker 1: the order and how they really carried this team today?
- 1:16Speaker 2: Magical, It was unbelievable. Everyone was hyped. If you didn't
- 1:21Speaker 2: feel the energy coming through your speakers, you weren't paying
- 1:25Speaker 2: attention these guys. You know what, this was a scrappy performance.
- 1:31Speaker 2: It's a different look. It's the guys that are trying
- 1:35Speaker 2: to do the opposite of maybe what the early season
- 1:38Speaker 2: strategy was, especially a guy like Madrigal. He single handedly,
- 1:43Speaker 2: I think, may have ran two pitchers out of that ballgame.
- 1:46Speaker 2: But you know, I'll tell you what had the toughest
- 1:49Speaker 2: day of them all. I think was homeplate umpire Dan
- 1:51Speaker 2: i Asonia. I'm not sure what if he wasn't getting
- 1:54Speaker 2: a good look. Yeah, what happened. He's a veteran, but
- 1:58Speaker 2: that that was not a good performance.
- 2:00Speaker 1: I didn't look at the box score. Did he miss?
- 2:02Speaker 1: Did he have like six or seven calls overturned? And
- 2:04Speaker 1: one of them I didn't. I think it was so
- 2:06Speaker 1: far outside they didn't even put the number of inches outside.
- 2:10Speaker 1: So yeah, he's going to look back on that one
- 2:12Speaker 1: and wonder what the heck happened. But the four bottom
- 2:17Speaker 1: of the order hitters for the Angels, We'll look it
- 2:19Speaker 1: back at this one quite fondly. Sebastian Rivero, the number
- 2:23Speaker 1: nine hitter, backup catcher, rarely plays. He entered today with
- 2:26Speaker 1: eight career RBIs he had five hits and six RBIs,
- 2:31Speaker 1: including really his first two hits were a pair of
- 2:34Speaker 1: two run singles, and granted both of them barely hit
- 2:38Speaker 1: the outfield grass, one with the infield in, but they
- 2:41Speaker 1: both came in the first four innings, which got the
- 2:43Speaker 1: Angels off to a good start. Adele went four to
- 2:46Speaker 1: five with a mammoth four hundred and thirty three foot
- 2:49Speaker 1: two run homer in the seventh, and at that time
- 2:52Speaker 1: it was six to five, so that pushed the Angels
- 2:54Speaker 1: lead to eight to five. And Magical, as you mentioned,
- 2:59Speaker 1: drew three walks and saw thirty seven pitches in the game,
- 3:03Speaker 1: fourteen during a second ending walk in which he challenged
- 3:06Speaker 1: two strike calls that were overturned, and twelve during a
- 3:11Speaker 1: fifth ending walk. And I did screenshot Madrigals at bat
- 3:16Speaker 1: in the second look at all those pitches. I think
- 3:19Speaker 1: he hit like eight. He fouled off eight two strike pitches. Mark,
- 3:25Speaker 1: you use the word scrappy, and yeah, I agree. Nothing
- 3:29Speaker 1: could be more apropos to describe today's offensive effort. I
- 3:34Speaker 1: didn't know much about Nick Madrigal other than that he
- 3:36Speaker 1: played most of his career in Chicago before this year.
- 3:40Speaker 1: I don't know how much playing time. He's going to
- 3:41Speaker 1: get moving forward, but he is. He's put a little
- 3:45Speaker 1: more grit into this lineup. We talked about, you know,
- 3:48Speaker 1: Mechler and some of the other guys doing the same.
- 3:52Speaker 1: How do you foul? How do you foul off that
- 3:54Speaker 1: many pitches?
- 3:55Speaker 3: First of all? And what are those bats? Like? What's
- 3:58Speaker 3: the long Do you remember the longest that bat of
- 3:59Speaker 3: your career? No?
- 4:02Speaker 2: I don't. But Nidrigall was a first round pick. It's
- 4:06Speaker 2: not as if he was some unheralded he was a prospect.
- 4:11Speaker 2: He got to the big leagues very quickly, and his
- 4:14Speaker 2: game is exactly this. It's he's not a big guy.
- 4:18Speaker 2: I don't know if you've seen him in person.
- 4:19Speaker 1: But I have a very small guy five seven.
- 4:24Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean plenty of guys a small package can
- 4:27Speaker 2: really play Altuve and quite a few others. Mookie is
- 4:30Speaker 2: not a big guy either, so that that really isn't
- 4:33Speaker 2: the point. I think that he is doing what I
- 4:36Speaker 2: was talking about with Howie Kendrick. You saw a lot
- 4:38Speaker 2: of the foul balls. You saw a lot of the
- 4:40Speaker 2: foul balls go to the right side. So to me,
- 4:45Speaker 2: that's somebody who is trying to use the whole field.
- 4:49Speaker 2: I saw another player take a swing and I think
- 4:54Speaker 2: he almost tumbled and did a three sixty falling to
- 4:58Speaker 2: the ground. I can't remember who it was, but that
- 5:00Speaker 2: player didn't look like they were trying to use necessarily
- 5:03Speaker 2: the whole field. Argued with quite a few players today
- 5:05Speaker 2: too with the umpire and then got into a home
- 5:08Speaker 2: run and statuted it. So credit to him. Nice going, Bud.
- 5:12Speaker 2: But you know what I wanted to ask you, is
- 5:16Speaker 2: is Rivera? I mean, what a game for a guy
- 5:19Speaker 2: you described as a backup catcher. I mean, can you
- 5:22Speaker 2: afford to sit this guy?
- 5:24Speaker 1: I mean, I don't know that i'd start him, but
- 5:26Speaker 1: he certainly deserves a little more playing time for me,
- 5:30Speaker 1: just by on the fact of his defense is pretty solid.
- 5:34Speaker 1: He does seem to do a better job of blocking
- 5:37Speaker 1: balls in the dirt then the starting catcher. I will say,
- 5:40Speaker 1: Logan has made some really strong throws at second base,
- 5:43Speaker 1: caught a few guys stealing this past week. I heard
- 5:47Speaker 1: on the broadcast he's trying a new catching stance. Good
- 5:50Speaker 1: for him, hope it helps him. But at this point,
- 5:53Speaker 1: I'm not so sure you're going to get that much
- 5:55Speaker 1: less with the bat from Rivero now, today was obviously
- 5:58Speaker 1: a career day for the guy. You know, he's not
- 6:01Speaker 1: going to get multiple hits every game.
- 6:03Speaker 2: I'm just gonna ask because it sustainable or you don't
- 6:05Speaker 2: think you hate that word, but I do not think
- 6:08Speaker 2: this is sustainable.
- 6:10Speaker 1: However, I think you would benefit by, you know, maybe
- 6:13Speaker 1: by giving him some more bats. He does produce a
- 6:16Speaker 1: little at the plate, and you have to pace your
- 6:20Speaker 1: starting catcher. Your starting catcher cannot play five to six
- 6:22Speaker 1: games a week, no matter how good you are in
- 6:25Speaker 1: this league.
- 6:25Speaker 3: It's just too much of a grind physically.
- 6:27Speaker 1: I think he definitely earns some more playing time with
- 6:30Speaker 1: today's game, So we'll see what happens moving forward. Well,
- 6:33Speaker 1: it wouldn't be a day in Angels Land without some
- 6:37Speaker 1: questionable managerial moves and some strange things happening out there.
- 6:42Speaker 3: But I want to revert back to.
- 6:43Speaker 1: Something Joe Davis, the Dodgers broadcasters, said on Friday night's telecast.
- 6:48Speaker 1: It was a zero zero game. I think it was
- 6:51Speaker 1: either after the eighth they're going in the night, and
- 6:53Speaker 1: he said the Angels quote have used their best two
- 6:56Speaker 1: relievers and Chase Silseith and Sam Bachman already in the game.
- 7:00Speaker 1: Then almost on cue, Kirby Yates leaves a ninth inning
- 7:04Speaker 1: fastball up to Freddy Freeman. Reddy does what he does,
- 7:07Speaker 1: crushes a walk off home run for a one nothing
- 7:11Speaker 1: Dodgers win. Now, setting aside the fact that no team
- 7:14Speaker 1: can survive with only two reliable relievers, it's clear that
- 7:19Speaker 1: manager kurtzuzuki Can has to be very judicious in his
- 7:22Speaker 1: use of Silseth and Bachman. So what the heck was
- 7:27Speaker 1: sil Seth doing entering the game in the eighth inning
- 7:30Speaker 1: Sunday with the Angels ahead twelve to five. And why
- 7:35Speaker 1: did Sam Bachman come in to face Otani in the
- 7:38Speaker 1: eighth when they had a left hander and Mitch Ferris
- 7:40Speaker 1: warming up. Now, Kurt was smart to not bring Bakman
- 7:44Speaker 1: back for the ninth after Sam through I think it
- 7:46Speaker 1: was eight pitches to retire Otani. But the Angels over
- 7:50Speaker 1: to opening a three game series against the Astros Monday night,
- 7:53Speaker 1: and one of their two best relievers might not be
- 7:56Speaker 1: available because they were used in a seven run game
- 7:59Speaker 1: on Sunday.
- 8:00Speaker 3: What is going on here? Mark?
- 8:04Speaker 2: I'm going to take a stab at it. I don't
- 8:06Speaker 2: have any inside information. What I do know is last
- 8:09Speaker 2: year there was at least one ultimatum made pick it
- 8:11Speaker 2: up or there'll be some changes, And this screams possibly
- 8:16Speaker 2: that find a way to win as much as possible
- 8:21Speaker 2: whenever possible. Logically, I have no clue why their two
- 8:27Speaker 2: highest leverage relievers or at least best performing relievers were
- 8:31Speaker 2: entering into a blowout game. Maybe we'll get an explanation after.
- 8:36Speaker 2: I'm not counting on one. However, they did their job
- 8:40Speaker 2: and the Angels won Salvage Day. Well, they got to win.
- 8:45Speaker 2: They lost another series. You wouldn't have known it, but
- 8:49Speaker 2: at least you know some positive news for the Angel
- 8:53Speaker 2: fans that want that kind of thing. Some guys out
- 8:57Speaker 2: there battling through injury. I think we can get to that,
- 9:00Speaker 2: laying it all on the line for their club and
- 9:02Speaker 2: some other guys that are injured, and it's kind of
- 9:04Speaker 2: a mixed bag. And the Astros are an improved club.
- 9:06Speaker 2: They got some guys playing well, so you're gonna need
- 9:09Speaker 2: all the arms. Grayson Rodriguez making the start tomorrow. He's
- 9:13Speaker 2: averaging four and a third inning so far. Maybe he's
- 9:17Speaker 2: able to go deeper. But I don't know how many
- 9:19Speaker 2: guys are going to have the green light next to
- 9:21Speaker 2: their name, if that's something you know they use those
- 9:23Speaker 2: types of things. He's good or he's not gonna need
- 9:26Speaker 2: everybody you can and used a lot today. Yeah, it
- 9:29Speaker 2: reachs a desperation to me. It's like every win is
- 9:32Speaker 2: so precious of this team because they just are not
- 9:35Speaker 2: that many. It's like you're using Chase Silset in a
- 9:39Speaker 2: seven run game. Now it was me, I would have
- 9:42Speaker 2: gone right to Ferris.
- 9:43Speaker 1: You know, say he gives up, walks a guy, guy
- 9:46Speaker 1: gets a hit, Otani goes deep.
- 9:50Speaker 3: It's a four run game.
- 9:51Speaker 1: Still at that point, you know, you still have plenty
- 9:53Speaker 1: of margin for air for if you want to bring
- 9:56Speaker 1: Silset in at that point. But as as we all know,
- 10:01Speaker 1: a big part of managing in this game and managing
- 10:03Speaker 1: a bullpen is managing two to three days ahead. You
- 10:08Speaker 1: don't just manage today's game. And maybe you know, I've
- 10:11Speaker 1: had years of covering a playoff World Series contending team
- 10:16Speaker 1: in the Dodgers, and that's been drummed into my head.
- 10:19Speaker 3: Dave Roberts will not, you know.
- 10:20Speaker 1: If he used the guys the last two nights and
- 10:23Speaker 1: there's a safe situation on that third night, he will
- 10:26Speaker 1: not use his closer that night, no matter what, because
- 10:29Speaker 1: they're playing for the you know, for the they're playing
- 10:31Speaker 1: the long game, and you know the Angels right now
- 10:34Speaker 1: are playing the short game. It's like every win is
- 10:36Speaker 1: so precious to them they're almost forced to make desperation moves.
- 10:41Speaker 3: Like today, we're gonna.
- 10:42Speaker 1: Take a quick break for a word from our sponsors,
- 10:46Speaker 1: and when we come back, we'll talk a little bit
- 10:48Speaker 1: about Mark Trumbo's favorite shortstop. And now it's time for
- 10:53Speaker 1: Daily Dingers, presented by Fandel.
- 11:02Speaker 3: Mike.
- 11:03Speaker 2: Last week, you nailed it with Joe Adell. We're gonna
- 11:06Speaker 2: need you to go to for two this week. What
- 11:08Speaker 2: do you got all right?
- 11:09Speaker 1: Well, the Houston Askers are coming to town for a
- 11:12Speaker 1: three game set against the Angels beginning Monday. I got
- 11:15Speaker 1: to go with the Jordan Alvarez. He's back to being
- 11:18Speaker 1: the Jordan Alvarez of old. Leads the American League with
- 11:21Speaker 1: twenty two homers, forty eight RBIs, and leads the major
- 11:24Speaker 1: leagues at least entering Sunday with a one point three OPS.
- 11:28Speaker 1: And he's been on a bit of a tear lately,
- 11:30Speaker 1: with seven homers and seventeen RBIs in his last thirteen games.
- 11:36Speaker 1: So Jordan Alvarez is my daily daily dinger pick for
- 11:40Speaker 1: Monday nights a game. Joining the action is easy. Just
- 11:44Speaker 1: make your free pick on who's hitting a home run
- 11:47Speaker 1: in their game, and if you're right, you'll get a

- 11:50Speaker 1: chance at extra winnings. It's just another reason why fan

- 12:32Speaker 1: Welcome back to Halo Territory with Mike Dgiovanna and Mark Trumbo.
- 12:36Speaker 1: Well Zach Netto hit a big three run home run
- 12:39Speaker 1: on the seventh inning Sunday to push a nine to
- 12:41Speaker 1: five lead to twelve five, but he committed his twelfth
- 12:45Speaker 1: ERA of the season in the sixth inning. Remember, Zach
- 12:49Speaker 1: committed eleven errors in all of twenty twenty five, and
- 12:53Speaker 1: Sunday's era was costly. With runner on first, Nettlefield at
- 12:56Speaker 1: Alex calls slow roller up the middle and had time
- 12:59Speaker 1: to flip to Oswald Parazza for the second out. Instead,
- 13:04Speaker 1: he throws to first base, wild throw that puts two on.
- 13:09Speaker 1: Dalton rushing hits a three run home run off Soriano
- 13:12Speaker 1: and Ryan Ward fallows with a solo shot, and all
- 13:15Speaker 1: of a sudden, the Dodgers pulled the winds within six
- 13:18Speaker 1: or five at that point. Now we're gonna show you
- 13:21Speaker 1: a picture. This is where Netto fielded the ball, and
- 13:26Speaker 1: you can see Parazza right on the second base bag,
- 13:29Speaker 1: and I forget who was running there, but it appears
- 13:32Speaker 1: he has plenty of time.
- 13:34Speaker 2: To kind of looks like Kyle Tucker.
- 13:36Speaker 3: But yeah, yeah, I was thinking it was Kyle Tucker.
- 13:38Speaker 3: I forgot to go back and look.
- 13:39Speaker 1: But Mark he had a similar play in that game
- 13:45Speaker 1: where he I guess it was in Tampa where he
- 13:48Speaker 1: went to touch second base and missed it and didn't
- 13:51Speaker 1: get it out at first either is this just another
- 13:56Speaker 1: there's a communication problems between him and Paraza. Is there
- 13:59Speaker 1: some kind of something is off here with Netto's defense.
- 14:04Speaker 1: I can't really put my finger on it, but man,
- 14:06Speaker 1: he just looked like he had an easy out at
- 14:08Speaker 1: second there and chose to make the tougher play at first.
- 14:12Speaker 2: That is what I saw on the broadcast I heard.
- 14:16Speaker 2: I think the same thing that you did. That Parrazza
- 14:19Speaker 2: may have been at fault to some degree, and the
- 14:22Speaker 2: other play that happened that was very similar, maybe the same.
- 14:27Speaker 2: I The picture there speaks for itself and for those
- 14:32Speaker 2: that are listening. Parraza is literally straddling as much as
- 14:36Speaker 2: anyone is going to, so he's available if needed. I think,
- 14:42Speaker 2: I don't know, and Zach is very talented, there's no
- 14:45Speaker 2: doubt about it. How much are we going to airtime,
- 14:49Speaker 2: you know, give to these topics. It's the fans can
- 14:52Speaker 2: decide for themselves that are still watching. If you're into it,
- 14:54Speaker 2: you know, he hit a home run down eight runs,
- 14:57Speaker 2: and I'm going to give him the benefit of it
- 14:59Speaker 2: out because it's, you know, the questionable fair foul, but
- 15:02Speaker 2: he just doesn't move out of the box down eight runs.
- 15:06Speaker 2: It's it's something. It's a look, it's it's not what
- 15:10Speaker 2: I would have done, but nobody cares what I would
- 15:12Speaker 2: have done. If he's having fun out there and he's
- 15:15Speaker 2: able to, you know, mix it up with Mookie at
- 15:18Speaker 2: second base when his team's just getting thrashed, that's that's
- 15:21Speaker 2: all good. Yeah, you know, if he plays well, I
- 15:26Speaker 2: will be the first one to give him, give him credit.
- 15:28Speaker 2: It's been inconsistent so far, and I'm not sure the
- 15:31Speaker 2: Angels are playing the best short stop at short stop
- 15:33Speaker 2: that they have on the rosters.
- 15:35Speaker 3: Yeah, at this point.
- 15:37Speaker 1: I mean, I don't know if they have so much
- 15:40Speaker 1: depth they can just afford to give zach netto days off.
- 15:43Speaker 1: But I wonder you know, he's had I think was
- 15:46Speaker 1: it one game? Well, he had the games where he
- 15:48Speaker 1: was heard where he had the neck whiplash, and he
- 15:51Speaker 1: set out three games that really he hasn't set out
- 15:54Speaker 1: any game because of a non injury this season is
- 15:57Speaker 1: I know we're only in early June. I don't know
- 16:00Speaker 1: if the grind of the season is wearing him down mentally, physically, both.
- 16:05Speaker 1: But you know, you have Piazza who can play shortstop.
- 16:08Speaker 1: You have you know, Madri goal, you have a Frasier,
- 16:12Speaker 1: who can play second? You got Donovan Walton still you
- 16:15Speaker 1: can play third? Would would would Zach benefit maybe from
- 16:19Speaker 1: at least a mental rest day here and now?
- 16:24Speaker 2: No, No, he's gonna play every day. He should play.
- 16:27Speaker 2: He's a young guy. I don't have any advice for him.
- 16:30Speaker 2: He doesn't want to hear it. If I did do
- 16:33Speaker 2: your thing, man, it's all good. Uh your career. I
- 16:38Speaker 2: have nothing left to offer on this topic.
- 16:42Speaker 1: All right, Well, as we said, the Dodgers won the
- 16:44Speaker 1: first two games of this series, one nothing Friday night
- 16:48Speaker 1: on Freddy's walkoff Homer, and Saturday Night included another brutal
- 16:53Speaker 1: start by Jack Honwitz. Got one out, gave up seven
- 16:59Speaker 1: runs on six hits, didn't make it out of the
- 17:03Speaker 1: first inning. And Mark, you know, we talked a lot
- 17:07Speaker 1: about this kid already, and let's let's take a look
- 17:09Speaker 1: at the numbers, and they're not pretty. Jack's first seven
- 17:12Speaker 1: starts of the year, he was actually really good, two
- 17:14Speaker 1: in one with a three point five e RA thirty strikeouts. Granted,
- 17:19Speaker 1: the walks were high twenty one in forty one in
- 17:22Speaker 1: the third innings. His last six starts zho to four
- 17:28Speaker 1: with an eleven point five to one era, seventeen strikeouts,
- 17:33Speaker 1: fifteen walks in twenty two and two thirds innings. Now,
- 17:41Speaker 1: we were expecting to, you know, have some speculation on
- 17:44Speaker 1: what you would do with Jackie Honowitz, but that was
- 17:46Speaker 1: pretty much cleared up before Sunday's game when young Jack
- 17:49Speaker 1: was placed on the injured list because of an inflamed elbow,
- 17:53Speaker 1: which I found kind of surprising because he was I
- 17:55Speaker 1: think he touched ninety nine and that start the other night.
- 17:58Speaker 3: Didn't he did? He not?
- 18:00Speaker 1: But surprisingly enough, Jack said the pain had been bothering
- 18:07Speaker 1: for like three stars, but it only seems to affect
- 18:09Speaker 1: him on change ups, which is not one of his
- 18:11Speaker 1: better pitches. So what's going on with Jack?
- 18:16Speaker 3: In your eyes? Why is he throwing a change up?
- 18:17Speaker 3: If one it hurts, and two it's probably your fourth
- 18:20Speaker 3: best pitch.
- 18:22Speaker 2: If anyone has been listening, I'll cover it yet again,
- 18:27Speaker 2: Jack change up. Statistically it is his worst pitch. It
- 18:32Speaker 2: has been for multiple years now. Coming up in twenty
- 18:37Speaker 2: twenty four, he was somewhere around seventy two seventy three
- 18:41Speaker 2: percent sinker primarily a sinker ball pitcher, and he has
- 18:46Speaker 2: a slider. His slider rates as positive. He never uses
- 18:49Speaker 2: his slider anymore. Jack is leaning on his change up
- 18:53Speaker 2: for about twenty five percent of the time or more.
- 18:56Speaker 2: I believe he tips his change up as well. Nearly
- 18:59Speaker 2: certain of it. Hitters will also let you know by
- 19:02Speaker 2: the fact that they're all almost never fooled on it either.
- 19:05Speaker 2: It generates a few whiffs, and that is what he's
- 19:08Speaker 2: sold out for. I think he's taken some advice. If
- 19:11Speaker 2: you were to do an Instagram search, it's pretty quick.
- 19:14Speaker 2: Type his name in and you'll see some of his
- 19:15Speaker 2: off season training. It's him doing what's trendy. And I'm
- 19:20Speaker 2: going to try and get the opinions of some pitchers
- 19:22Speaker 2: who know a lot better than me. But I see
- 19:25Speaker 2: what they're doing. They're hucking balls as hard as they
- 19:27Speaker 2: can in a velocity challenge. I highlighted some of the
- 19:31Speaker 2: hitting stuff I saw over the winner. I won't take
- 19:34Speaker 2: it back. I believe that, you know, I've seen enough
- 19:36Speaker 2: to know and Jack's change up per you know, his
- 19:40Speaker 2: training was the pitch they felt like he really needed
- 19:43Speaker 2: to lean into to generate whiffs. He's going for whiffs
- 19:47Speaker 2: and I don't. I mean, my opinion is he doesn't
- 19:51Speaker 2: need to do it. The analytics may say he would
- 19:54Speaker 2: benefit greatly from doing it, but I think he would
- 19:57Speaker 2: do a lot better off leaning into a more deceptive
- 20:00Speaker 2: delivery using his sinker. I see. I went back and
- 20:05Speaker 2: I tried to find as many articles as I could,
- 20:07Speaker 2: and all I keep saying is he can't get the feel.
- 20:10Speaker 2: It's the field the feel, and the feel's a big deal.
- 20:13Speaker 2: But why has the field gone away? I can only
- 20:16Speaker 2: surmise possibly because you are throwing. I think when he
- 20:19Speaker 2: came up in twenty four he was around ninety five
- 20:22Speaker 2: to ninety six miles an hour, and that's well above
- 20:27Speaker 2: you know, I don't know in today's world. To me,
- 20:29Speaker 2: it's well above average for a starting pitcher. Now he's
- 20:32Speaker 2: trying to light up the radar gun, but he doesn't
- 20:35Speaker 2: throw a heater that gets by anybody. He doesn't have
- 20:38Speaker 2: an explosive fastball. I faced many many pictures similar you know,
- 20:43Speaker 2: big radar gun numbers. But to the eyes, if you
- 20:46Speaker 2: don't have deception doesn't matter getting a good look at it.
- 20:48Speaker 2: And hitters are getting too good a look at him.
- 20:51Speaker 2: He throws that change up. It's hurting his arm too.
- 20:55Speaker 2: Get rid of it, man, I mean, you're probably I'm
- 20:58Speaker 2: almost certain his glove flare is giving information away to
- 21:01Speaker 2: the hitter. I see the grip in there. You can
- 21:03Speaker 2: see it from second base, so I'm assuming the hitters
- 21:06Speaker 2: and if a runners on second, they're relaying it. I
- 21:09Speaker 2: think he's got to take a take a deep breath
- 21:11Speaker 2: while he's on the aisle get get things right. But
- 21:14Speaker 2: I mean, sinker slider. The numbers kind of prove that out.
- 21:17Speaker 2: They don't. Kind of prove it out. They do. I'm
- 21:20Speaker 2: gonna get more opinions on this. There's my raw, unfiltered take.
- 21:25Speaker 2: I think he's got a lot of potential. I really do.
- 21:28Speaker 2: I don't think he's a lost cause, but he's got
- 21:30Speaker 2: He's got to get, you know, dive into something that's
- 21:33Speaker 2: gonna work for him, because so far it hasn't. Twenty
- 21:37Speaker 2: twenty four, he had a much better earned run average
- 21:39Speaker 2: and much different pitch mix.
- 21:42Speaker 1: Yeah, we're gonna take one more quick break for a
- 21:45Speaker 1: word from our sponsors, and we come back. We'll talk
- 21:47Speaker 1: about some of the options the Angels will have to
- 21:49Speaker 1: replace Jack Kay in irritation.
- 21:56Speaker 2: My dog Bella would do anything for a treat, and
- 21:59Speaker 2: I want to give her a treat that will take
- 22:01Speaker 2: care of her long.

- 22:54Speaker 1: Hey, welcome back to Hello Territory with Mike Dgivonna and
- 22:56Speaker 1: Mark Trumbo. Well the Angels did rep plays Jack on
- 23:00Speaker 1: the Roster with sam Aldengary on Sunday and the left
- 23:05Speaker 1: hander through five and third scoreless sittings in relief last week,
- 23:09Speaker 1: but Kurtzuzuki did not necessarily commit to him as a
- 23:13Speaker 1: replacement in the rotation. I think the options there are
- 23:17Speaker 1: Cayden Dana, who really struggled. I think he missed most
- 23:20Speaker 1: of the spring training with the was It mono and
- 23:24Speaker 1: is finally rounding.
- 23:25Speaker 3: In the form.
- 23:25Speaker 1: He's got a one point seventy six ERA in his
- 23:28Speaker 1: last four starts at Triple A. We've seen some of
- 23:31Speaker 1: George Klassan, who's one of their top pitching prospects. I
- 23:34Speaker 1: know Mark was high on Sammy Natara, who we first
- 23:37Speaker 1: got got a first look at this weekend. Who do
- 23:41Speaker 1: you like to replace Jack in the rotation at this point?
- 23:46Speaker 2: Natara is a reliever. I don't think he's stretched out
- 23:49Speaker 2: a left so great start for him. Very happy. Seems
- 23:52Speaker 2: like a very happy kid in a good way. I
- 23:56Speaker 2: would be too if I debuted the Dodger Stadium and
- 23:59Speaker 2: had six. Yes, but I do think he has great stuff.
- 24:02Speaker 2: Limiting the walks is going to be his thing. But
- 24:04Speaker 2: I wish him the best. I mean, it's that is
- 24:06Speaker 2: a great story. I think Ferris is probably the guy
- 24:12Speaker 2: that would compete against Alde Gary alder Gerry as the starter.
- 24:15Speaker 2: So I don't see any reason why you wouldn't give
- 24:17Speaker 2: him another look. Classen is the one I'm probably highest
- 24:21Speaker 2: on out of, you know, anybody that's close to major
- 24:25Speaker 2: league ready. I still think his stuff is tremendous and
- 24:28Speaker 2: I hope that he's the guy that's able to thrive eventually,
- 24:32Speaker 2: sooner than later. But as far as Caiten Dana, not
- 24:36Speaker 2: enough games I think yet. For that reason, he probably
- 24:39Speaker 2: will be the one that starts, because I've gotten most
- 24:42Speaker 2: everything wrong trying to predict with the club. But I
- 24:45Speaker 2: don't know, that's a question for somebody else. I guess
- 24:49Speaker 2: at the end of the day, we're.
- 24:50Speaker 1: Going to close the show talking about the first baseman,
- 24:53Speaker 1: Nolan shan Well. Now Nolan played, he was on the
- 24:58Speaker 1: IL played one rehab game at Rancho Class A Rancho
- 25:02Speaker 1: on was it Friday? Yeah, Friday, activated for Saturday's game,
- 25:08Speaker 1: despite saying his ankle was quote and these are his words,
- 25:11Speaker 1: super sore. After playing that one rehab game, he was
- 25:15Speaker 1: asked if he was concerned he could make it worse
- 25:17Speaker 1: by playing again. He said, I haven't really thought about it.
- 25:22Speaker 3: Mark what this was? This a bit of a head
- 25:24Speaker 3: scratching move for you the guys.
- 25:26Speaker 1: You know, it's not like we're talking, you know, Willis
- 25:28Speaker 1: Reid getting off the mat for Game seven here he's
- 25:32Speaker 1: you know, I'm not sure whatever eighty percent of Nolan
- 25:35Speaker 1: Shanwell is that is going to be better than another option.
- 25:40Speaker 1: And granted, you know they're kind of scrambling a first
- 25:42Speaker 1: base with von Grissom missed the whole Dodger series with
- 25:46Speaker 1: some kind of rib cage issue. Was this kind of
- 25:51Speaker 1: a head scratcher for you? I?
- 25:56Speaker 2: Yes, you've covered a lot of baseball. Those comments he made.
- 26:02Speaker 2: Have you seen a lot of guys that would describe,
- 26:04Speaker 2: you know, injuries and things like that. It stuck to me.
- 26:07Speaker 2: It seemed a little bit odd. I don't think it's
- 26:09Speaker 2: something I would have said, but it's possibly just a
- 26:13Speaker 2: more transparent version of what's going on. He was brutally.
- 26:16Speaker 2: I mean, what was the adjective they used? Super sore?
- 26:22Speaker 2: Super sore? What do you make of that?
- 26:25Speaker 3: I don't know, man.
- 26:27Speaker 1: I think there's a level of ego involved in every
- 26:30Speaker 1: Major League baseball player. I've always felt and said that
- 26:34Speaker 1: that's part of why these guys are major leaguers because
- 26:36Speaker 1: they think they're so damn good, and often they are.
- 26:39Speaker 1: And I've seen so many guys over the years let
- 26:42Speaker 1: that ego get in the way of They let their
- 26:46Speaker 1: ego dictate that they're going to play hurt because it's
- 26:49Speaker 1: a macho thing to do, and they think that seventy
- 26:52Speaker 1: five or eighty percent of them is going to be
- 26:54Speaker 1: better than some guy who could come off the bench.
- 26:56Speaker 1: And maybe in some cases that's true, but most more
- 27:00Speaker 1: often I think he comes back to bite him. I
- 27:05Speaker 1: don't know that there's a risk of a long term
- 27:07Speaker 1: injury with an ankle thing. Maybe he re injures it
- 27:10Speaker 1: and goes back in the iel, but maybe he just
- 27:13Speaker 1: felt a little pressure, given the Angel situation, their need
- 27:16Speaker 1: to win games and what their bench is really thin
- 27:19Speaker 1: right now, a little pressure to come back. But you know,
- 27:23Speaker 1: I saw him run out of ball a grounder Saturday night.
- 27:26Speaker 1: He barely made it the first base. He looks okay
- 27:30Speaker 1: defensively to me. But the thing I'm thinking of, and
- 27:33Speaker 1: you can address this way better as a big league hitter,
- 27:35Speaker 1: mark that back foot for a left handed hitter like
- 27:40Speaker 1: no one is huge. How does when you have an
- 27:42Speaker 1: ankle that is super sore. How does that can affect
- 27:46Speaker 1: your swing and your just your whole approach and effectiveness
- 27:50Speaker 1: in the box.
- 27:52Speaker 2: On defense, there was a play today where he it
- 27:54Speaker 2: was somewhat of an in between play and excellent range.
- 27:58Speaker 2: The throw was not the best, but Nolan essentially had
- 28:02Speaker 2: his back turned probably for the at least initial part,
- 28:06Speaker 2: and the ball got by him. Because of his limited mobility,
- 28:10Speaker 2: I saw a lot of winsing. It looked like a
- 28:13Speaker 2: little bit of hobbling, even walking back to the dugout after.
- 28:16Speaker 2: I think one of his strikeouts looked you know, it
- 28:19Speaker 2: wasn't wasn't his normal gait. As far as it goes
- 28:23Speaker 2: with the medical it's hard to say. I think the
- 28:26Speaker 2: players dictate a lot of what happens. He played one
- 28:30Speaker 2: game in Rancho Cucamonga, nine innings after you know what
- 28:34Speaker 2: he's describing as it's incredibly you know, irritated. I guess
- 28:40Speaker 2: his ankle and it's just a nine inning game and
- 28:43Speaker 2: he's right back in there at Dodger Stadium facing some
- 28:47Speaker 2: premium pitching. Was a Yamamoto was the first game Yamamoto Saturday,
- 28:51Speaker 2: and yeah, he wanted wanted a piece of him, and
- 28:55Speaker 2: he got it, but not not in the way that
- 28:57Speaker 2: we're talking about. I I honestly don't know. I know
- 29:02Speaker 2: I can. My first year, my rookie year, I probably
- 29:04Speaker 2: played at least a month and a half on a
- 29:07Speaker 2: broken foot. I only found out when we finally got
- 29:10Speaker 2: it imaged, and I remember doctor Yoakum was like, what
- 29:15Speaker 2: I did know was it? It was not comfortable, but
- 29:18Speaker 2: it was not at the point where I was unable.
- 29:21Speaker 1: Uh.
- 29:22Speaker 2: It just eventually something finally gave, probably the bone, but
- 29:26Speaker 2: three pfps in a row, and I remember telling the
- 29:29Speaker 2: trainer at the time, hey man, this isn't good. And
- 29:32Speaker 2: it was. It was a different time too, I mean
- 29:34Speaker 2: that was it wasn't cool to for, especially for a
- 29:39Speaker 2: younger player to miss any time. And once we saw that,
- 29:42Speaker 2: what could happen? I mean it was the navicular bone
- 29:44Speaker 2: took Yelming's career away and many others, so pretty serious thing.
- 29:49Speaker 2: The production though, I hadn't fallen off, and I think
- 29:52Speaker 2: that's why I continued to play. But I wonder and
- 29:55Speaker 2: worry a little bit. For Nolan, the Abbats haven't really
- 29:58Speaker 2: looked too good. He did draw a and also for
- 30:02Speaker 2: Logan on hope you've played through injury. If the statistics
- 30:06Speaker 2: start to take a nosedive, it's not good for you,
- 30:09Speaker 2: it's not good for the team. It's better just to
- 30:11Speaker 2: get it right. If it is as big an issue
- 30:13Speaker 2: and the backflip for a hitter, it's vital, It's incredibly vital.
- 30:18Speaker 2: It's where you get your balance from. It's where you
- 30:20Speaker 2: know some of the power is generated from. And if
- 30:22Speaker 2: that's compromised, what I expect to see is a swing
- 30:26Speaker 2: that starts to get out on the front side more
- 30:29Speaker 2: probably a whole lot of one arm finishes. I'm already
- 30:31Speaker 2: seen some of that. Doesn't look like his normal swing. Actually,
- 30:34Speaker 2: for a while now it hasn't looked like his normal swing.
- 30:37Speaker 2: I wondered if that was him trying to tap into
- 30:38Speaker 2: more power or if there's something going on. I think
- 30:41Speaker 2: we have our answer now, So I don't know. Hopefully
- 30:46Speaker 2: he's able to kind of get it right if he's
- 30:48Speaker 2: just gonna tape it incredibly tight and it's more of
- 30:53Speaker 2: a band it literally is a band aid. So my
- 30:55Speaker 2: advice would be, you know, take the time to get
- 30:59Speaker 2: it right. He's a nice ballplayer, and if you get
- 31:02Speaker 2: enough at that's where they're not going your way. You
- 31:04Speaker 2: can try, you know, the whole second half of the
- 31:06Speaker 2: seasons trying to get back to normal, and it's a
- 31:09Speaker 2: tough road, so hopefully he's able to take care of it.
- 31:12Speaker 2: Best wishes.
- 31:14Speaker 3: Yeah, all right.
