• 2:14
Speaker 7: Thanks for having me, sir.
• 2:16
Speaker 5: Well, and I'm gonna go ahead. I didn't tell you
• 2:18
Speaker 5: this ahead of time. We're joined in studio by Steve
• 2:20
Speaker 5: Animal from ninety eight to seven the Mountain.
• 2:23
  Speaker 7: That's always a lively event.
• 2:25
Speaker 5: Yeah, so you know, we normally run a delay, you know,
• 2:28
Speaker 5: on the show anyway, and Ryan, our producers, so should
• 2:30
Speaker 5: I run double delay today? Said yes, I'm.
• 2:35
Speaker 7: Running live from my classroom. So I got I got
• 2:37
Speaker 7: seven kids sitting here listening in on our interview today.
• 2:40
Speaker 8: All right, we're family.
• 2:43
Speaker 5: Calm down, then, Steve, all right, two days away, mister
• 2:46
Speaker 5: Rucker from one of Saint Albans premiere events, is gonna
• 2:50
Speaker 5: be a whole lot of people. Their weather is going
• 2:51
Speaker 5: to be absolutely fantastic. Talk about where the proceeds go
• 2:55
Speaker 5: and just talk about the day in general.
• 2:58
Speaker 7: Proceeds are all sat all with Police Department Canine Unit
• 3:02
Speaker 7: Bonnie and the dog and the unit itself is where
• 3:07
Speaker 7: all of it initiated, and that's where our funds all
• 3:10
Speaker 7: started from the beginning, we've branched out and grown a
• 3:13
Speaker 7: little bit over the years. So now we're looking into
• 3:16
Speaker 7: assistant youth and education programs within Saint Albans Star Club
• 3:20
Speaker 7: Project graduations, you know, things that the schools need, the
• 3:24
Speaker 7: students need. Trying to fill in those voids and help
• 3:27
Speaker 7: out theirs as we can make sure that we have
• 3:30
Speaker 7: a safe community and educated youth coming up and a
• 3:33
Speaker 7: good future to lead our community in the years to come.
• 3:36
Speaker 7: And moving forward, the day itself again a whole lot
• 3:41
Speaker 7: of community coming together, building and with the whole purpose
• 3:45
Speaker 7: of giving back out to exactly what we just mentioned.
• 3:48
Speaker 7: But we do that by Chili Chili, Chilly Chili all
• 3:52
Speaker 7: over down the street, up the street, Fall Beest type
• 3:55
Speaker 7: of events attraction. The music will be there. We have
• 3:59
Speaker 7: live starts at twelve thirty. At twelve o'clock we kick
• 4:02
Speaker 7: off Mastery on Main Street where we recognize all of
• 4:05
Speaker 7: our kids who achieve Mastery on the standardized testing. At
• 4:09
Speaker 7: twelve thirty we have the heavy Hitter State State. At
• 4:12
Speaker 7: two o'clock Anderson road Band, and at four o'clock is
• 4:15
Speaker 7: the Groove Brothers who are an Alman Brothers tribute band,
• 4:19
Speaker 7: so very much a funk style music that'll be playing
• 4:22
Speaker 7: on Main Street lively, very much enjoyable, food vendors, all
• 4:27
  Speaker 7: the fun.
• 4:28
Speaker 8: Yeah, it'll be a riot too. And you like beer,
• 4:33
Speaker 8: you don't like I do. They'll be craft beer vendors,
• 4:36
Speaker 8: all sorts of vendors on the street. Steven Keith, the
• 4:39
Speaker 8: food Guy, one of our judges for the Chili Cookoff.
• 4:43
Speaker 8: If you are cooking five hundred bucks first place, which
• 4:46
Speaker 8: is pretty awesome, second place three hundred, third place two hundred,
• 4:50
Speaker 8: and the People's Choice award will also happen of course,
• 4:55
Speaker 8: ninety eight seven the Mountain. We'll be there, and I
• 4:58
Speaker 8: believe Diamond, Dave and Lan all his hair will be there,
• 5:01
Speaker 8: just not in your food.
• 5:02
Speaker 5: So yeah, looking forward to it, kind of avoid that,
• 5:06
Speaker 5: wouldn't miss it. And if somebody is listening right now,
• 5:09
Speaker 5: David and they are not a chili person, there's all
• 5:11
Speaker 5: kinds of other food there too, right.
• 5:14
Speaker 7: Yeah, we have we have other food vendors that will
• 5:16
Speaker 7: be out on the street as well, just your regular
• 5:19
Speaker 7: type of food, truck style foods, and then we also
• 5:22
Speaker 7: have a ton of That's the other thing I love
• 5:24
Speaker 7: about this organization in this event it allows For example,
• 5:28
Speaker 7: Hayes Volleyball will be out there, Saint Albans Youth Football,
• 5:32
Speaker 7: Saint Alban's High School football, all these organizations will be
• 5:35
Speaker 7: out there doing their own little fundraisers, but contributing to
• 5:39
Speaker 7: our big event fundraiser. So they'll be out there with
• 5:42
Speaker 7: all the false flavors and those tastes, you know, Pepperoni
• 5:45
Speaker 7: rolls of course, but I think we got a few
• 5:47
Speaker 7: grilled cheese vendors out there. Who doesn't like a grilled
• 5:50
Speaker 7: cheese with their pottages? So yeah, there'll be food galore
• 5:55
Speaker 7: and stuff for kids. We got have some some attractions
• 5:58
Speaker 7: going on for them as well. It'll be a full
• 6:01
Speaker 7: family event all the way up and down the street.
• 6:03
Speaker 5: It always is, and it's always great because it's right
• 6:05
Speaker 5: there on Old Main. And I'm I'm legitimately saying, I mean,
• 6:08
Speaker 5: at any given time, especially with the weather as nice
• 6:11
Speaker 5: as it's going to be, Marshall's off this weekend. WVU
• 6:14
Speaker 5: plays on Friday night, so that that kind of worked
• 6:18
Speaker 5: out in your favor a little bit. I mean, there's
• 6:19
Speaker 5: legitimately five hundred thousand people there, I mean legit, Steve
• 6:23
Speaker 5: would do we agree with that?
• 6:24
Speaker 8: Yeah, it's going to be a packed street and if
• 6:25
Speaker 8: you're looking for some fun, just get out. The weather's
• 6:27
Speaker 8: going to be fabulous for the next five days. Saturday
• 6:30
Speaker 8: is going to be no exception. And Saint Albans actually
• 6:33
Speaker 8: offers a lot of other things for you to eat aresa.
• 6:37
Speaker 8: You know, we've got the Cafe, We've got Drummis, we
• 6:39
Speaker 8: have Shuckers, we have the Tap, we have Cole River Coffee,
• 6:42
Speaker 8: and we have Cosmeo Mexican restaurant, just some of the
• 6:45
Speaker 8: restaurants that are right there in the region.
• 6:47
Speaker 5: So, yeah, a lot of good stuff. Go ahead.
• 6:50
Speaker 7: Day shut down during these will be enjoyable as well.
• 6:56
Speaker 5: Yeah, that's a and so again, if chili is not
• 6:58
Speaker 5: your thing, you can you can dump in over to
• 7:01
Speaker 5: talk to Guy and the folks at Shuckers. Get some
• 7:03
Speaker 5: of those crab stuff mushrooms, go to the cafe and
• 7:06
Speaker 5: get you or get your wings dipped and grilled, which
• 7:08
Speaker 5: is the way to get them there at the Camfeg.
• 7:10
Speaker 8: And I'll be on tour on the street, so if
• 7:12
Speaker 8: you'd like to buy me a drink and all of
• 7:13
Speaker 8: these establish it, I'll be more than happy to join you.
• 7:16
Speaker 5: Yeah, he's easy that way. The Dave Island showing five
• 7:20
Speaker 5: Adylive is broad to you part by Morgan and Morgan
• 7:22
Speaker 5: with more than twenty billion dollars recovered. They believe that
• 7:24
Speaker 5: when you're injured, you deserve more. Morgan to Morgan, America's
• 7:26
Speaker 5: the largest injury law firm. All right now, if people
• 7:28
Speaker 5: want to enter the chili contest, is is it too
• 7:33
Speaker 5: late for that day?
• 7:34
Speaker 7: Well, if they are a chili cooker only, I would
• 7:38
Speaker 7: still find a spot. Our street is pretty full right now.
• 7:41
Speaker 7: But if you're cooking chili, I'll always find room to
• 7:44
Speaker 7: put a chili cooker somewhere on the street. We'll fit
• 7:47
Speaker 7: you in. We'll make the space because we're always looking
• 7:50
Speaker 7: for that. If you do want to register for a
• 7:52
Speaker 7: chili cooker so, you can go to fall y'all Chili
• 7:54
Speaker 7: Cookoff dot com or Saint Albans Fallyall Festival Chili Cookoff
• 7:58
Speaker 7: on Facebook and you can get to the link through
• 8:01
Speaker 7: there that will take you to the registration. Like I said,
• 8:05
Speaker 7: chili only. And also let me point out if you
• 8:08
Speaker 7: want to be a People's choice judge, you know when
• 8:11
Speaker 7: you come and taste the chili, it's one dollar a
• 8:13
Speaker 7: ticket to taste of each vendor one dollar per vendor.
• 8:19
Speaker 7: If you pay ten dollars, you'll get twelve tickets and
• 8:22
Speaker 7: you'll get two chips and the opportunity to be the
• 8:25
Speaker 7: judge one of the people's choice judges. You drop the
• 8:28
Speaker 7: chip in whichever one you like and you vote for
• 8:31
Speaker 7: them as your faith. So you can also have fun
• 8:34
Speaker 7: in the judging aspect while walking the street as well.
• 8:37
Speaker 5: And let me tell you, take the people that enter
• 8:40
Speaker 5: the actual competition, they take this very seriously. And I
• 8:43
Speaker 5: got an opportunity last year to be a judge or
• 8:45
Speaker 5: a few of us. And I like the fact too
• 8:46
Speaker 5: that you have different judges every year. You mentioned Steven
• 8:48
Speaker 5: keep the food guy or Buddy from the Gazette Mail
• 8:51
Speaker 5: is going to be there. One of my favorite people
• 8:52
Speaker 5: in the world, Merrily mccaulliffe from WWKTV thirteen is going
• 8:56
Speaker 5: to be there. Who are the other judges?
• 8:58
Speaker 7: We got Walt Hall will beaudging with this. We've got
• 9:01
Speaker 7: Rob Real, we'll be judging with our man Yeah, and
• 9:06
Speaker 7: a guest citizen judge, and also Saint Alban's High School principal,
• 9:11
Speaker 7: Jerk the Swingo will be one of our judges as well.
• 9:14
Speaker 5: Nice and I'm gonna be uh. I volunteer to help
• 9:17
Speaker 5: with the judging, and the reason I explained this on
• 9:19
Speaker 5: the air a couple of days ago, David. One of
• 9:21
Speaker 5: the reasons I volunteered to do that is because as
• 9:23
Speaker 5: the judge, you know, and I'll judge a lot of
• 9:25
Speaker 5: chili competitions, you only get you know, one, one or
• 9:29
Speaker 5: two bites and then they just put it aside. Well,
• 9:32
Speaker 5: somebody is going to have to do something, uh with
• 9:35
Speaker 5: that other extra with the extra chili there. So I mean,
• 9:39
  Speaker 5: I'm I'm there, I'm there for it.
• 9:41
Speaker 7: Okay, Well I might we can maybe share, okay, dodging.
• 9:47
  Speaker 5: I don't share well, but.
• 9:50
Speaker 7: We can try. I'll try. I'm teaching my children how
• 9:53
Speaker 7: to share, so we'll make an effort at share in
• 9:55
  Speaker 7: a little bit.
• 9:55
Speaker 5: Of chili keep them away from animal. Then, hey, Dave,
• 9:59
Speaker 5: I appreciate you would taking time out of your schedule
• 10:01
Speaker 5: to call us up about the event and give us
• 10:03
Speaker 5: the rundown again where people can learn.
• 10:04
Speaker 7: More at fall Y'all Chili Cookoff dot com or Saint
• 10:09
Speaker 7: Albans fall Y'all Chili Cookoff or St. Alban's fall Y'all
• 10:12
Speaker 7: Festival Chili Cookoff on Facebook.
• 10:14
Speaker 5: And again if people just want to come out and
• 10:16
Speaker 5: just hang out, just to come on the streets of
• 10:18
Speaker 5: Saint Albans. I mean, we're trying to raise a little
• 10:20
Speaker 5: money for the canine unit there of the Saint Albans
• 10:21
Speaker 5: Police Department, but just to come out on the street.
• 10:24
Speaker 5: It's free, just to come hang out, hang out and
• 10:26
Speaker 5: check out the music.
• 10:27
Speaker 7: Yep, environment music, the great great sights and all going on.
• 10:32
Speaker 7: Enjoy community, family, friends, come on out joint.
• 10:36
Speaker 5: All right, Hey, Dave, we'll let you get back to it.
• 10:38
Speaker 5: I appreciate you being here. Man, Thanks a lot.
• 10:40
  Speaker 7: Thank kid.
• 10:45
Speaker 5: All right, it is nine seventeen. We've got to get
• 10:48
Speaker 5: him back there to educating those young minds.
• 10:50
Speaker 8: So but terrible waste.
• 10:52
Speaker 5: But yeah, because you're end up in radio so like
• 10:55
Speaker 5: Steve and I. But but we have a good time
• 10:56
Speaker 5: at these events. And again, I know you're very you're
• 10:58
Speaker 5: mister Saint Albans, very ingrained in the community.
• 11:01
Speaker 8: How long have you been in Sant Albans September seventeenth,
• 11:04
Speaker 8: thirty five years. I thought i'd be here a year,
• 11:07
Speaker 8: and here here I am.
• 11:08
  Speaker 9: Here you are.
• 11:08
Speaker 8: What what do you enjoy about Saint Albans so much?
• 11:11
Speaker 8: It's off the Beaten Path a little bit. You know,
• 11:13
Speaker 8: it's not easy access to get to the interstate. And
• 11:16
Speaker 8: I say that, but it's you know, you're five minutes away.
• 11:18
Speaker 8: You go over the bridge, you go down through Nitro Institute,
• 11:22
Speaker 8: you hop on and boom. I leave Saint Albans and
• 11:25
Speaker 8: coming to Charleston daily orgo back and forth. It's about
• 11:28
Speaker 8: a twelve to fifteen minute ride.
• 11:30
  Speaker 6: That's it.
• 11:30
  Speaker 3: Yah.
• 11:31
Speaker 5: Get to listen to some music and you know, you
• 11:33
Speaker 5: know there's a microphone in front of you, right, Have
• 11:35
Speaker 5: you ever been behind behind a microphone before a text?
• 11:40
Speaker 5: Because you are so ingrained the community. Before we let
• 11:42
Speaker 5: you go, there was a text here and I wanted
• 11:45
Speaker 5: to ask you about this because you're mister Saint Albans.
• 11:46
Speaker 5: Somebody asking why more events aren't held at the Saint
• 11:49
  Speaker 5: Albans Mall lot.
• 11:51
Speaker 8: I believe that's due to the ownership of the mall lot,
• 11:55
Speaker 8: so they don't necessarily the liability, the insurance and other
• 11:58
Speaker 8: things that would be nice if they were more community oriented,
• 12:01
Speaker 8: but you know they choose not to have that issue
• 12:04
  Speaker 8: on their.
• 12:05
Speaker 5: Lot, right, And I mean, and I don't know the
• 12:07
Speaker 5: situation that sounds logical from what you're saying there, but
• 12:10
Speaker 5: there is a big liability when you have events like this,
• 12:12
Speaker 5: and sometimes cities you know, can can I mean, you know,
• 12:15
Speaker 5: when you have it downtown, it's a little bit more
• 12:17
Speaker 5: manageable for the cities. But I mean it's a good point,
• 12:19
Speaker 5: would be a good a good place to do something
• 12:21
  Speaker 5: they had.
• 12:22
Speaker 8: In the past. I think years ago when I first
• 12:25
Speaker 8: got here, I was in the dunk tank for the
• 12:27
Speaker 8: Saint Albans Police Department fundraiser and they did have it
• 12:31
Speaker 8: like on the Kroger side lot back when right Aid
• 12:34
Speaker 8: was there back in the day. But I just think,
• 12:37
Speaker 8: you know, for manageability, it's private properties.
• 12:39
Speaker 5: Right And one of the things I like about what
• 12:41
Speaker 5: David said is that the businesses we mentioned, the coffee
• 12:45
Speaker 5: shop and the cafe and Chucker, they're all going to
• 12:47
Speaker 5: be open their normal hours and so you got that
• 12:50
Speaker 5: many people there. Eventually people are going to go in
• 12:53
Speaker 5: and they're going to go into some of those establishments
• 12:55
Speaker 5: and you know, grab some other stuff maybe that's not
• 12:57
Speaker 5: on the street or whatever. Relax a little bit. So
• 13:00
Speaker 5: hats off to them, because sometimes businesses don't want to
• 13:02
Speaker 5: open during those events, but most of most are open.
• 13:05
Speaker 5: Most of them are I.
• 13:06
Speaker 8: Mean it's really a neat Main Street there. A lot
• 13:09
Speaker 8: of things have reopened, so come check it out Saturday.
• 13:12
Speaker 8: It's gonna be a great day to get out in
• 13:13
  Speaker 8: a bout.
• 13:14
Speaker 5: Yeah, all right, get a plug in for tonight. You're
• 13:16
Speaker 5: going to be downtown at five Street.
• 13:18
Speaker 8: Right, yes, five Street brewing right there on the corners
• 13:20
Speaker 8: of Fife and Summer across from city Center. There's live
• 13:23
Speaker 8: music out there this evening. Of course, the weather's going
• 13:26
Speaker 8: to be great, so you can sit outside. Come hungry.
• 13:28
Speaker 8: I'll have Mountain merch. We'll have some gift certificates to
• 13:31
Speaker 8: give away, flowers from our flowers and dunbar and just
• 13:34
Speaker 8: a good time. Maybe you don't want to go to
• 13:36
Speaker 8: work tomorrow, join me. I will make sure that happens.
• 13:38
Speaker 8: But you have to be on the air tomorrow morning
• 13:40
Speaker 8: at six. You know, realize that shut.
• 13:42
Speaker 5: Your dirty mouth. Steve Animal from ninety eight to seven
• 13:45
Speaker 5: a mountain and again we are going to be there,
• 13:47
Speaker 5: myself an Animal, and we more than likely Shockley is
• 13:49
Speaker 5: going to be there. He just kind of shows up
• 13:51
Speaker 5: wherever we are. Shock Shockley and his hair will be
• 13:53
Speaker 5: there as well. Will be on the streets of Saint
• 13:55
Speaker 5: Albans for fall, y'all, It's not going to really feel

• 17:17
Speaker 5: I wish I could take credit for it, but I
• 17:19
Speaker 5: held the door open once when they were hoping when
• 17:21
Speaker 5: bringing some stuff in there.
• 17:22
Speaker 14: Is helpful as I.
• 17:23
Speaker 5: That's pretty much the extent of it, all right, So
• 17:27
Speaker 5: you know we have I'll always have fun on the show,
• 17:28
Speaker 5: but sometimes you have to get serious for just a
• 17:30
Speaker 5: little bit. So this will be some of this segment
• 17:32
Speaker 5: talk about the issue with domestic violence in America.
• 17:35
Speaker 14: So domestic violence, we are all of the folks in
• 17:41
Speaker 14: domestic violence are really struggling right now. We're seeing cut
• 17:46
Speaker 14: to all of our funding across the board. So now
• 17:50
Speaker 14: we need folks support really more than ever. The victims
• 17:55
Speaker 14: need that. We want to be able to provide seamless
• 18:00
Speaker 14: services and everything that we've always done, and we're seeing
• 18:05
Speaker 14: the numbers stay about the same, if not increase, but
• 18:09
Speaker 14: with less funding than we've ever had. So it's really
• 18:13
Speaker 14: really difficult and we're trying to continue to do what
• 18:17
Speaker 14: we do, and what we do we do really well,
• 18:20
Speaker 14: and we want to be able to continue that. So
• 18:23
Speaker 14: we're seeing more and more folks that are one pay
• 18:28
Speaker 14: check away from losing housing that we have helped stabilize
• 18:35
Speaker 14: in the past. We're seeing more folks here in Kanall County.
• 18:39
Speaker 14: We get ten percent of the state's domestic violence petitions,
• 18:43
Speaker 14: so we have advocates right there frontline that are busier
• 18:48
Speaker 14: than they've ever been. I wish I had to say
• 18:53
Speaker 14: there were positive changes. We're not really seeing that. But
• 18:57
Speaker 14: we're still out there continuing to bring awareness and do
• 19:01
Speaker 14: the best we can to serve everyone that needs us.
• 19:04
Speaker 5: And that's what this month is about. Because the show
• 19:08
Speaker 5: several times in the past, you've talked about the different
• 19:09
Speaker 5: programs that you offered. We'll talk about the funding for
• 19:12
Speaker 5: a moment, and I know we want to be you know,
• 19:15
Speaker 5: we want to want to do this the right way.
• 19:17
Speaker 5: But but you said, you know your funds are are
• 19:20
Speaker 5: are dwindling or going down a little bit wise.
• 19:22
  Speaker 14: Though, absolutely.
• 19:25
  Speaker 3: So.
• 19:26
Speaker 14: We're just seeing changes under the current government, I guess,
• 19:33
Speaker 14: especially in some of the funds that we receive are
• 19:37
Speaker 14: commingled in with funds that are considered for our un
• 19:43
Speaker 14: housed neighbors. And I guess what folks sometimes don't realize
• 19:48
Speaker 14: is many of the folks that we serve through with
• 19:52
Speaker 14: domestic violence, they are homeless. They have left their house
• 19:57
Speaker 14: for their own safety. So when we he cuts to
• 20:01
Speaker 14: homeless services, that affects us as well. So you know,
• 20:08
Speaker 14: we've had news recently that we're looking at about a
• 20:11
Speaker 14: nine hundred thousand dollars cut in the state for services
• 20:16
Speaker 14: for homeless services, but that also affects us and that's
• 20:23
Speaker 14: funding that we use to stabilize sixty families. So that's
• 20:29
Speaker 14: what that means is without that funding, those folks that
• 20:34
Speaker 14: move out of shelter. We are so proud of ourselves
• 20:37
Speaker 14: that we've been able to move folks from shelter into
• 20:40
Speaker 14: their own permanent housing and a year after our assistance ends,
• 20:44
Speaker 14: eighty three percent of those are still in their houses.
• 20:48
Speaker 14: So if that funding goes away, that next step for
• 20:52
Speaker 14: when folks leave shelter is completely gone.
• 20:55
Speaker 5: Yeah, because the shelter was never designed to stay there permit.
• 20:59
Speaker 14: That's an emerge see right, And so what that means
• 21:03
Speaker 14: is without that funding, folks are in our shelter for
• 21:06
Speaker 14: so much longer. Which means it's harder to get in.
• 21:11
Speaker 14: So it just has a trickle down effect of one
• 21:15
Speaker 14: small thing affects the bigger hole, and so there are
• 21:19
Speaker 14: some unintended consequences for some of these some funding.
• 21:24
Speaker 5: Yeah, I'm talking to Julie Britton again from the HYEWCA

• 21:46
Speaker 5: You mentioned something there that I thought was interesting, and
• 21:49
Speaker 5: I think sometimes we forget, you know, we all get
• 21:51
Speaker 5: in our head, you know what domestic violence is, or
• 21:55
Speaker 5: who the victims are or in some cases who the
• 21:57
Speaker 5: perpetrators are. The right we have, we have this image.
• 22:00
Speaker 5: We forget sometimes how families are involved in domestic violence.
• 22:04
Speaker 5: It's just not about the lady or the man, because
• 22:07
Speaker 5: it does go both ways. And we'll talk about that
• 22:09
Speaker 5: and just in a bit, but it's not There are
• 22:13
Speaker 5: others many many times, but probably the majority of your cases,
• 22:16
Speaker 5: there's more than just that person involved.
• 22:19
Speaker 14: Right, absolutely. We see we've actually seen more kids and
• 22:23
Speaker 14: families this year than in my eight years at the
• 22:28
Speaker 14: WHY through shelter. So we're talking about families that have
• 22:35
Speaker 14: left their house with absolutely nothing and we're that safety
• 22:40
Speaker 14: net and it really does it effects. So then you're
• 22:46
Speaker 14: talking the effects on the school system, getting kids into
• 22:50
Speaker 14: the schools where they their homeschools and than just trying
• 22:57
Speaker 14: to stabilize them. Especially if you have a large family,
• 23:02
Speaker 14: finding housing is always an issue.
• 23:05
Speaker 5: So well, yeah, there's so many things that go along
• 23:07
Speaker 5: with that. There's pets involved sometimes, you know, you've got
• 23:10
Speaker 5: I mean, oh absolutely, I mean I'm an animal person
• 23:12
Speaker 5: and you know me too. My animals are are are
• 23:15
Speaker 5: the are part of the family, and so to go
• 23:17
Speaker 5: somewhere that I can't take the animals, so right, yes, and.
• 23:20
Speaker 14: That that's the thing as well. You know we're seeing
• 23:22
Speaker 14: one bedroom apartments renting for one thousand dollars and no
• 23:26
Speaker 14: pets allowed. That's it's a big hurdle that that we
• 23:31
  Speaker 14: face every day.
• 23:32
Speaker 5: What's the biggest misconception about domestic violence because I said
• 23:36
Speaker 5: to you earlier that we forget sometimes men are also
• 23:39
Speaker 5: victims of this. What's some of the some of the
• 23:41
  Speaker 5: biggest misconceptions.
• 23:42
Speaker 14: You say that it only happens to folks that don't
• 23:47
Speaker 14: have money, and I guess the biggest conception, Well, the
• 23:55
Speaker 14: biggest thing I wish that people would stop saying is
• 23:58
Speaker 14: why doesn't she just leave? Because it's so incredibly difficult.
• 24:03
Speaker 14: I think when you understand, asking someone to leave means
• 24:08
Speaker 14: asking them to give up their home, oftentimes their pets.
• 24:14
Speaker 14: Knowing that moving their kids from what some folks use
• 24:17
Speaker 14: as stable home to a shelter, it's going to be
• 24:21
Speaker 14: a huge red flag for let's say CPS, the school system.
• 24:29
Speaker 14: There are so many questions that are issues that go
• 24:32
Speaker 14: along with why didn't she just leave? You know, it's
• 24:35
Speaker 14: also victim blaming, but that's that's one. And then also
• 24:42
Speaker 14: believing that once they have left that everything's just magically better.
• 24:49
Speaker 14: It's usually not. Things get much worse before they get better,
• 24:54
Speaker 14: so that sometimes just leave isn't really helpful. Absolutely need
• 25:01
Speaker 14: to have a plan unless they're escaping in the moment.
• 25:06
Speaker 14: This is a plan. You need to know where you're
• 25:08
Speaker 14: gonna go that you have resources so many things.
• 25:13
Speaker 5: Talking again with Julie Britain the Dave Alan Show on
• 25:15
Speaker 5: five any Live is brought to you bart by a
• 25:17
Speaker 5: Live Healthy West Virginia presented by WVU Medicine podcast. It
• 25:20
Speaker 5: is promoting healthier lifestyle is going to be on the stay.
• 25:23
Speaker 5: Check out our latest episodes wv metronews dot com and
• 25:25
Speaker 5: of the podcast menu and Julie. Sometimes there can be
• 25:28
Speaker 5: a stigma, Oh yeah, with the person that leaves. I mean,
• 25:32
Speaker 5: because there's always in any kind of a domestic situation,
• 25:35
Speaker 5: you know, he said, she said, you know, and one
• 25:38
Speaker 5: person's got one story and one person's got another. But
• 25:40
Speaker 5: there's always a stigma how could this person, how could
• 25:44
Speaker 5: he or she just up and leave their home? And
• 25:47
Speaker 5: as you said, victim victim shaming and things like that.
• 25:50
Speaker 14: Yes, absolutely, I think it's important to remember that not
• 25:55
Speaker 14: only does the perpetrator groom as victim, everyone around them,
• 26:01
Speaker 14: you know, they're they're usually the great person that you
• 26:04
Speaker 14: work with. It's super helpful, and that's on purpose. So
• 26:09
Speaker 14: when it does come to light what's happened in the house,
• 26:12
Speaker 14: it makes it so easy to question, like, oh, no,
• 26:16
Speaker 14: I know them they're amazing. I used to work with them.
• 26:19
Speaker 14: They were, you know, the best coworker ever had. Or
• 26:23
Speaker 14: that's my uncle. He's always very sweet. You may have
• 26:29
Speaker 14: that relationship with them, but you're not their partner, and
• 26:32
  Speaker 14: that's a totally different.
• 26:33
Speaker 5: Nobody really what goes on behind closed down? Absolutely, and
• 26:37
Speaker 5: you see the public image. And I also thought it
• 26:39
Speaker 5: was interesting that you said it's not a class thing
• 26:41
Speaker 5: and it's not a money thing talking to absolutely.
• 26:43
  Speaker 6: Not, no, no.
• 26:45
Speaker 14: And I think that folks assume that just because someone
• 26:50
Speaker 14: has access or their perpetrator has access to money, that
• 26:56
Speaker 14: the victim also has that same access to money, and
• 26:59
Speaker 14: that's usually not the case at all. There is so
• 27:02
Speaker 14: much financial abuse of involved in all of this, and
• 27:05
Speaker 14: I think when we really dig down to the bottom
• 27:08
Speaker 14: of the why didn't she just leave? Many many times
• 27:13
  Speaker 14: it's financial and it's a matter of how am I
• 27:21
Speaker 14: going to recreate this level of living for my kids?
• 27:26
Speaker 14: And folks get shamed for that as well, like when
• 27:30
  Speaker 14: you leave. That's it's a tough space because yeah, there's
• 27:35
Speaker 14: a lot to think about.
• 27:37
Speaker 5: Let's talk about the rest of the month of October.
• 27:40
Speaker 14: Yes goes, Oh my gosh, we have amazing things happening.
• 27:43
Speaker 14: So one of the big things is Dave. I am
• 27:47
Speaker 14: making my stage debut uh huh with the Contemporary Youth
• 27:54
Speaker 14: Arts Company. It's a play called Why We Stayed, and
• 28:00
Speaker 14: it's about the forgotten victims of domestic violence. It is
• 28:03
Speaker 14: If people talk about wanting to support us, this is
• 28:07
Speaker 14: the way to do it. There is no ticket price,
• 28:10
Speaker 14: although we are asking for donations.
• 28:14
  Speaker 13: It is.
• 28:16
Speaker 14: So amazing. It talks about domestic violence from so many
• 28:20
Speaker 14: different perspectives, from the CPS worker to the nurse who
• 28:25
Speaker 14: is seeing a victim again and again and again, to
• 28:29
Speaker 14: law enforcement, kids in the house. And it's called Why
• 28:35
Speaker 14: We Stayed. And it's at the Cyac Playhouse on the
• 28:43
Speaker 14: West Side over in Elk City and it starts October tenth,
• 28:48
Speaker 14: so it's the tenth, seventeenth, and eighteenth, and the twelfth
• 28:52
Speaker 14: and the nineteenth. It's on our YWCA of Charleston facebook page.
• 28:57
Speaker 14: I'd love for folks to come and see because we
• 29:00
Speaker 14: often say you don't know what you don't know. But
• 29:02
Speaker 14: these stories. Dan Katie is the playwright and they are
• 29:07
Speaker 14: absolutely amazing. He met with some folks on the team
• 29:12
Speaker 14: that I work with and developed these stories and they
• 29:16
Speaker 14: are absolutely moving, and I thought, you know what, I
• 29:20
Speaker 14: come each year that they've put this on. It was
• 29:23
Speaker 14: part of festival last year, but this year I said,
• 29:27
Speaker 14: you know what, let's put our money where well, let's
• 29:30
Speaker 14: put our mouth where the money may be. And so
• 29:34
Speaker 14: I have a very small role in this, but I
• 29:37
Speaker 14: would love for folks to come and see what we
• 29:39
Speaker 14: do there. We also have our at the end of
• 29:42
Speaker 14: the month on the thirtieth or Honkin' Wave, where we
• 29:45
Speaker 14: are crowning our Advocate of the Year and our Volunteers
• 29:50
Speaker 14: of the Year. There are so many things we have
• 29:53
Speaker 14: going on, partnerships with the West Side Health Right where
• 29:56
Speaker 14: we're doing a panel discussion, and on the steps of
• 29:59
Speaker 14: the Capital next week on the sixth, we are going
• 30:03
Speaker 14: to have a shoe display for the victims of domestic violence,
• 30:10
Speaker 14: so that will be incredibly moving. There is so much happening,
• 30:15
Speaker 14: and folks can catch up with that on our Facebook page.
• 30:18
Speaker 14: But we'd love to see you out. Everything is free
• 30:22
Speaker 14: again the play we're asking for donations and I think
• 30:25
Speaker 14: once you hear and see the stories, you know nothing's
• 30:32
Speaker 14: too small At this point. You know, ten dollars we
• 30:36
Speaker 14: take that and turn it into dog food for our
• 30:39
Speaker 14: pets over at the refuge at Hope House. So we
• 30:43
Speaker 14: just want people to know what we do and hear
• 30:46
Speaker 14: all of those different perspectives.
• 30:47
Speaker 5: I did want to mention that Aaron Parker has a
• 30:50
Speaker 5: story this morning post at Wvventurenews dot com that purplepin
• 30:53
Speaker 5: wheels are lined up outside the Knaw County Public Safety
• 30:57
Speaker 5: Building to bring awareness and that to prevent domestic violence
• 31:01
Speaker 5: in conjunction with this. Absolutely, we got a great story
• 31:05
Speaker 5: on the website about that, some comments from Knaw County
• 31:07
Speaker 5: Prosecutor Deb Rusnik and others on the website.
• 31:10
Speaker 14: That's fabulous. And so those those are folks, the advocates
• 31:15

Speaker 5: a story this morning at wv metronews dot com. Now
• 37:55
Speaker 5: a third a third woman has filed suit against the
• 37:59
Speaker 5: Kanawha County bailiff. You know the story by now. Fifty
• 38:03
Speaker 5: four year old cast Close was arrested in late July
• 38:06
Speaker 5: after a woman accused him of sexually assaulting her while
• 38:09
Speaker 5: she was in custody, and then came a second lawsuit
• 38:14
Speaker 5: in August, followed by another woman. Similar story there to
• 38:18
Speaker 5: the first woman's story, and now a third woman has
• 38:22
Speaker 5: come forward in this case. Now you can read the
• 38:24
Speaker 5: exact allegations as part of Aaron Parker's story this morning.
• 38:30
Speaker 5: It's supposed to at wv metronews dot com. Now the
• 38:32
Speaker 5: bailiff Close was previously arraigned and his bond was set
• 38:36
Speaker 5: one hundred thousand dollars. He's still locked up at South
• 38:39

• 38:46
Speaker 5: I'm to have it a hard time with things today.
• 38:48
Speaker 5: Words words are hard, Ryan, They're hard. State School Board
• 38:52
Speaker 5: President Paul Hardesty will be the first guest with Wilson
• 38:55
Speaker 5: Meadows on talk Line today at ten oh six, and
• 38:58
Speaker 5: after his comment yesterday at the state school Board meeting.
• 39:04
Speaker 5: You may want to tune in today. I know you will.
• 39:07
Speaker 5: And let me say this about Paul Hardesty. I have
• 39:09
Speaker 5: known Paul Hardesty my entire life. He's a good Logan
• 39:12
Speaker 5: County boy. He can be very vocal, mainly because he's
• 39:16
Speaker 5: a very large man, large in stature as in height.
• 39:21
Speaker 5: He gave a speech during the state school Board meeting
• 39:24
Speaker 5: yesterday morning and basically says school choice which he believes
• 39:30
Speaker 5: in which he did reiterate he believes in school choice.
• 39:35
Speaker 5: He said the school choice issue, though, is leading to
• 39:38
Speaker 5: lower enrollment and historic rounds of public school consolidation. We've
• 39:43
Speaker 5: seen many of them, as you'd well know here in
• 39:46
Speaker 5: Kennaw County. And he said the state has lost thirty
• 39:50
Speaker 5: five thousand students from public education his words now quote
• 39:54
Speaker 5: all in the name of school choice, end quote. And
• 39:59
Speaker 5: here's that's what I read into it. And we had
• 40:01
Speaker 5: Brad mcelhaney on the show yesterday talking about it again,
• 40:03
Speaker 5: mister Hardesty himself. We'll be on talk Line first guest
• 40:06
Speaker 5: at ten oh sixth to day. I'm reading into it
• 40:09
Speaker 5: he's putting a lot of the blame for this on
• 40:11
Speaker 5: the legislature of which he used to be a member
• 40:15
Speaker 5: of the legislature. And you can talk about charter schools,
• 40:19
Speaker 5: you can talk about scholarship, et cetera, et cetera. And
• 40:21
Speaker 5: if you go to the website and you read Brad's story,
• 40:24
Speaker 5: Brad's actually included some of the audio. It was a
• 40:26
Speaker 5: very impassioned speech for mister Hardesty, the head of the
• 40:30
Speaker 5: school board yesterday. And Paul Hardesty is somebody who's been
• 40:33
Speaker 5: around public education for a long time. He's a past
• 40:36
Speaker 5: board member, pass board president of Logan County Schools. And again,
• 40:39
  Speaker 5: he's got a, I guess, a unique perspective because he
• 40:42
Speaker 5: was a legislator at one time too. He has been
• 40:44
Speaker 5: an in and around state government a lot of different
• 40:47
Speaker 5: things in his career. And we kind of got an
• 40:51
Speaker 5: idea that at the state school board meeting yesterday that
• 40:55
Speaker 5: it was going to be a little fiery, And I
• 40:57
Speaker 5: mean when I say fiery, I mean just from the
• 40:59
Speaker 5: words of Paul Hartes. He basically just had a monologue
• 41:01
Speaker 5: there yesterday and he's going to be on with Meadows
• 41:05
Speaker 5: and Wilson at on talk Line coming up at ten
• 41:08
Speaker 5: oh six this oney, So I know you definitely do
• 41:11
Speaker 5: not want to miss that. Go to Metronews dot com
• 41:14
Speaker 5: and you can read the story and then tune in
• 41:17
Speaker 5: to Paul Hardesty Live. Now, I will say this, there
• 41:20
Speaker 5: are some people, as you may expect, that have been
• 41:22
Speaker 5: critical of Paul Hardnessey. One of those frequent guests of
• 41:25
Speaker 5: the program Jason Huffman from Americans for Prosperity, and we're
• 41:28
Speaker 5: going to have him on some future programs to talk
• 41:30
Speaker 5: about that as a matter of fact. And I am
• 41:33
Speaker 5: told that he is actually calling for hartnessey resignation. So
• 41:38
Speaker 5: don't I can tell you right now that's not gonna happen.

• 45:15

• 45:27
Speaker 5: it does seem that I will say this, and I

Speaker 5: say this as not a Trump supporter. Okay, I voted
• 45:35
Speaker 5: for the you know my story. I've told you before.
• 45:36
Speaker 5: I voted for the guy twice, did not vote for him.
• 45:41
Speaker 5: This past time because I thought he was dangerous to
• 45:44
Speaker 5: the country. However, however, however, he's a president of the
• 45:47
Speaker 5: United States and I respect the office, and so I
• 45:50
Speaker 5: want I want President Trump to do well. And I
• 45:53
Speaker 5: will say this too, I do think that Trump deringement.
• 45:57
Speaker 5: I just made up a word. Derangement syndrome is a
• 45:59
Speaker 5: real thing, I really really do. And it looks. Look,
• 46:03
Speaker 5: the President gives us all calls every now and then
• 46:07
Speaker 5: to shake our head with the things untruth social and
• 46:09
Speaker 5: so on and so forth. But I do think that
• 46:11
Speaker 5: sometimes I'm just just saying. I think sometimes people, what's
• 46:16
Speaker 5: the current term, I think they need to go out
• 46:18
Speaker 5: and touch a little grass every now and then. Not
• 46:21
Speaker 5: that kind. Well that's what it takes to relax. Then
• 46:24
Speaker 5: go ahead, I'm talking about the kind it's in your yard.
• 46:26
Speaker 5: Just relax a little bit. And it doesn't always have
• 46:30
Speaker 5: to be political. We don't always have to talk. I mean,
• 46:33
Speaker 5: and it's not just here. I mean there are people
• 46:36
Speaker 5: here in the Kanaw Valley that if you go to
• 46:38
Speaker 5: any news source, whether it's our station, whether it's the
• 46:43
Speaker 5: TV station's exect mail anything, every comment that they make
• 46:50
  Speaker 5: one person in particular, I mean, I see I don't
• 46:53
Speaker 5: even know the person, but I see them all the time.
• 46:55
Speaker 5: No matter what you're talking about. There's five comments that

Speaker 5: are anti Trump. Afterwards it's a spelling be at, you know,
• 47:01
Speaker 5: at an elementary school, but they comment with things about
• 47:05
Speaker 5: Trump like, uh yeah, just just just thinking, you know,
• 47:10
Speaker 5: just just just chill out a little bit, all right.
• 47:13
Speaker 5: And that's kind of ironical. Speaking of words I make
• 47:17
Speaker 5: up from time to time. There's a story behind ironical
• 47:19
Speaker 5: why I use it. But anyway, and I'm going to
• 47:22
Speaker 5: file this one Ryan, you'll appreciate this. Uh, I'm going
• 47:25
Speaker 5: to file this in the things that only matter to
• 47:28
Speaker 5: people like me. The old the older I get, the
• 47:34
Speaker 5: more that certain things bother me. Now I don't let it,
• 47:39
Speaker 5: I don't let it fester, but just occasionally it bothers me.
• 47:45
Speaker 5: One of those is people, and I've talked about this
• 47:47
Speaker 5: on the show before, posted on the social media, people
• 47:49
Speaker 5: who talk on speaker phones or do FaceTime in public.
• 47:54
Speaker 5: It's like I'm at Kroger, I'm just trying to get
• 47:57
Speaker 5: to the green beans, man. But we have to have
• 48:00
Speaker 5: someone who feels the need to broadcast everything on speakerphone
• 48:07
Speaker 5: or it's not just great in public or whatever. I
• 48:11
Speaker 5: told the story in a big social media rant about
• 48:14
Speaker 5: a year or so ago that my wife had a
• 48:17
Speaker 5: medical appointment and I had to drive her to set.
• 48:21
Speaker 5: Appointment had to take off the show and I had
• 48:22
Speaker 5: to drive her there. And we're in a waiting room
• 48:24
Speaker 5: that's not even half the size of the studio I'm
• 48:26
Speaker 5: setting in now, and some person in there felt the
• 48:29
Speaker 5: need to talk on a speaker phone while they were
• 48:32
Speaker 5: in there. I'm like, I just know this. If you
• 48:35
Speaker 5: talk on a speakerphone or you're doing FaceTime around me,
• 48:39
Speaker 5: I'm jumping in the conversation just so you know if
• 48:42
Speaker 5: you're talking about so if you're talking trash about somebody,
• 48:44
Speaker 5: I'm going to jump in and go, hey, you know,
• 48:46
Speaker 5: you're right, you know, because if you do that around me,
• 48:49
Speaker 5: that's what I'm going to do, just so you know.
• 48:51
Speaker 5: But the thing I wanted to get to this morning,
• 48:53
Speaker 5: and I don't know why these things bother me from
• 48:56
Speaker 5: time to time, the un needed shortening of words. Yesterday
• 49:05
Speaker 5: Metro News Hotline and I don't remember whether it was
• 49:09
Speaker 5: Inner Out or Question of the Day, but it's one
• 49:11
Speaker 5: of the things on X that the Weekly does. He
• 49:14
Speaker 5: talked about this new menu item at Wendy's, and it's
• 49:19
Speaker 5: kind of a Chicken Tenders kind of thing, and they're
• 49:23
Speaker 5: calling them Tendy's because you know, tenders took way too
• 49:30
Speaker 5: long to say or spell, apparently, And this is from
• 49:34
Speaker 5: the same school of thought of referring to chicken nuggets
• 49:39
Speaker 5: as nugs or God forbid nuggies. It absolutely drives me crazy.
• 49:49
Speaker 5: And I don't know why, it just does. I can
• 49:55
Speaker 5: give you a few more in the world of sports,
• 49:59
  Speaker 5: of which I'm a sports fanatic. Sorry, I don't have
• 50:03
Speaker 5: better news about my Cincinnati Reds, but nobody thought we'd
• 50:05
Speaker 5: make the playoffs anyway. ESPN says we have a selli
• 50:13
Speaker 5: now instead of a celebration. Check out the selli. And
• 50:18
Speaker 5: when do we do the selly, We do it after
• 50:21
Speaker 5: the tutty meaning touchdown. Please stop. Oh and by the way,
• 50:30
Speaker 5: perfect is now PERF family is now fam. And again,
• 50:37
Speaker 5: it just drives old people like me crazy. And maybe
• 50:42
Speaker 5: I should take the advice that I gave people that
• 50:45
Speaker 5: text the show about Trump and it's just relaxed and
• 50:48
Speaker 5: just go outside and touch a little touch a little
• 50:50
Speaker 5: grass or something. Knock out a couple of texts here,
• 50:56
Speaker 5: check said the only deranged people are people who voted
• 50:59
Speaker 5: for Trump and his bleep show says A texture text.
• 51:04
  Speaker 4: Says uh Dave.
• 51:06
Speaker 5: Our country is in a constitutional crisis. We're about to
• 51:09
Speaker 5: lose all of our freedoms. We the people need to
• 51:11
Speaker 5: stand tall. It's a texture tex says uh Dave. What
• 51:15
Speaker 5: about these made up words like unalive?
• 51:17
  Speaker 7: What is that?
• 51:19
  Speaker 4: Dead?
• 51:19
Speaker 5: Well, I can tell you unalive came from because and
• 51:23
Speaker 5: when you use it as the first time I saw
• 51:25
Speaker 5: unalive was used as a verb instead of kill because
• 51:30
Speaker 5: Facebook and other social media sites are very very sensitive
• 51:33
Speaker 5: about certain words, so it unalives me when people do that.
• 51:37
Speaker 5: You can't stay kill on social media. DJ Meadows is here,
• 51:41
Speaker 5: do I just need to just stop trying, stop trying
• 51:46
Speaker 5: to be so perf I'm gonna get you going on
• 51:48
  Speaker 5: this one.
• 51:49
Speaker 20: You know, for years, for years, we were worried that
• 51:52
Speaker 20: foreigners would come here and they would totally kill the
• 51:56
Speaker 20: English language. We would end up speaking I don't know,
• 51:59
Speaker 20: some other languae. Trent doing a pretty good job from
• 52:02
Speaker 20: what I can tell based on what you just shared,
• 52:04
Speaker 20: of killing the language in and of ourselves.
• 52:06
Speaker 5: A tutty instead of a touch tudy, a selly instead
• 52:09
Speaker 5: of a celebration who comes up with this stuff?
• 52:13
Speaker 20: Somebody, the kids, I mean, somebody's sitting around saying, hey,
• 52:16
Speaker 20: that tested well, let's let's make it a tuddy man
• 52:19
  Speaker 20: a tutty stuff.
• 52:20
  Speaker 5: It's perf it's anyway.
• 52:22
Speaker 20: I'm always scared when I hear this stuff because I
• 52:24
Speaker 20: don't know what it means, and if I repeat it,
• 52:28
Speaker 20: I may be saying something that I'm not supposed to say.
• 52:30
Speaker 5: To be fair, we got to close to be fair.
• 52:33
Speaker 5: This is really not something new. The Internet has kind
• 52:35
Speaker 5: of taken it to another level. But uh, I mean,
• 52:37
Speaker 5: somebody at one point had to stay bad meaning good,
• 52:40
Speaker 5: you know, and that goes back generations. Give me a
• 52:41
Speaker 5: TD all right, TEXTL says, excellent, cloud yelling day. That's
• 52:45
Speaker 5: what I do, all right, I've already I've already previewed
• 52:47
Speaker 5: the show for good for you with mister Hardist to
• 52:49
Speaker 5: give it up a ten or six. I'll see stick
• 52:51
Speaker 5: around later today until they have fun to love somebody?
• 53:00
  Speaker 4: Mm hmmm.
• 53:04
  Speaker 3: Do you c h s A ninety six point five
• 53:06
Speaker 3: back then, Charleston one oh four point five Cross Lanes
• 53:08

• 53:13
