- 0:11Speaker 1: Hi, Welcome to used to sew or is that used
- 0:15Speaker 1: to sew? It goes either way. You used to sew
- 0:17Speaker 1: and it's used to sew. We're here to talk about
- 0:20Speaker 1: sewing machines, sewing culture, with a little bit of extra
- 0:24Speaker 1: emphasis on Singer because I worked for Singer right before
- 0:29Speaker 1: they sold their sewing division. Used to sew, used to sew?
- 0:33Speaker 1: What is used to sew? Needles, thread, bias, tape, elastic irons,
- 0:39Speaker 1: Well maybe not, that's for pressing sewing machines. Do you
- 0:43Speaker 1: have a sewing machine? Do you want a sewing machine?
- 0:45Speaker 1: Did you grow up with a seying machine? Have you
- 0:47Speaker 1: ever even thought about sewing machines other than that time
- 0:51Speaker 1: in the Brave Little Toaster when the two faced one
- 0:53Speaker 1: was goting ev and sewing stitch on that little rag.
- 1:00Speaker 2: Yes, welcome to use to sew. Production from Fox and
- 1:03Speaker 2: Raven Media. This is your host, t R.
- 1:06Speaker 1: Kelly. That's my mom, and.
- 1:09Speaker 2: I am the producer and co host sometimes a radio.
- 1:13Speaker 2: We're here to.
- 1:14Speaker 3: Talk about all things over the century of Singer with
- 1:19Speaker 3: epilogues and caveats and side tangents. We're going to talk
- 1:23Speaker 3: about fast fashion and how you two can engage with
- 1:28Speaker 3: sewing fabric and stuff without buying new stuff, because.
- 1:33Speaker 1: All you need is stuff that was used to sew,
- 1:36Speaker 1: used to sew.
- 1:38Speaker 2: And yeah, we're gonna get started with some just broad
- 1:42Speaker 2: overview stuff and then we're gonna find rabbit holes and
- 1:45Speaker 2: you'll never see us again unless you decide to follow
- 1:48Speaker 2: us down these rabbit holes, in which case, welcome. We're
- 1:51Speaker 2: glad to have you.
- 1:52Speaker 1: Actually the whole rabbit hole thing. Let's go with a
- 1:55Speaker 1: sewing metaphor. We are going to go down the throat
- 1:59Speaker 1: plate into the show and become a massive threadjam and
- 2:03Speaker 1: we will try to untangle all those things for you.
- 2:06Speaker 1: Now unless you're actually sitting there listening to us naked,
- 2:09Speaker 1: I don't want to think about that. Look at what
- 2:12Speaker 1: you're wearing, okay, sewing machine. It's such a common thing
- 2:16Speaker 1: we don't even think about it anymore. But when it
- 2:21Speaker 1: was first invented, it changed the world, literally changed the world.
- 2:27Speaker 1: And that's the everybody, at least in the US and
- 2:32Speaker 1: the UK and actually all over the world. When you
- 2:35Speaker 1: say sewing machine, people say Singer Singer did not invent this.
- 2:41Speaker 1: Isaac Singer was his name, Isaac Merritt Singer, and he
- 2:45Speaker 1: was a failed actor, but he was also kind of
- 2:48Speaker 1: a mechanical genius, probably a neurospicy guy, and he was
- 2:56Speaker 1: fixing something one day and somebody brought in one of
- 2:58Speaker 1: the newfangled sewing machines to tinker with, and he took
- 3:03Speaker 1: a look at it and said, I can do better
- 3:04Speaker 1: than that, and apparently he did. We'll get into that
- 3:08Speaker 1: later about who really invented the sewing machine, but when
- 3:10Speaker 1: you think sewing machine and you think Singer, it was
- 3:14Speaker 1: his ability to sell the sewing machine that made him
- 3:19Speaker 1: such a ubiquitous presence, and the whole sewing reality Singer
- 3:24Speaker 1: is the sewing machine. I worked for the Singer Company
- 3:27Speaker 1: in the nineteen eighties before they quit doing sewing machines,
- 3:31Speaker 1: and I got to see quite a bit of the
- 3:33Speaker 1: inside workings of the company. But my favorite part was
- 3:38Speaker 1: getting to work on all the old trade in machines,
- 3:41Speaker 1: because if you had a Singer, then you want a
- 3:43Speaker 1: new one. Unfortunately, in the nineteen eighties, the old ones
- 3:48Speaker 1: were better than the new ones for the most part.
- 3:51Speaker 1: And you know, if I hadn't to quit on my own,
- 3:54Speaker 1: I probably would have got fired for telling people don't
- 3:57Speaker 1: trade in that. For Ona, for this sixty two thirty five.
- 4:02Speaker 1: You're gonna be taking a terrible step backwards. I didn't
- 4:05Speaker 1: say that anyhow.
- 4:11Speaker 2: Used to sew as a production of Fox and Raven Media.
