- 1:20Speaker 1: So let's start with the offshore fishing and it's been a slow week.
- 1:24Speaker 1: We had some bad weather.
- 1:26Speaker 1: This time of year it's mostly a weekend fishery.
- 1:29Speaker 1: Anyway, I could not find.
- 1:30Speaker 1: The last report I had was from last Sunday when a few boats found some Yellowfin tuna and some Bluefin tuna offshore out of Oregon Inlet.
- 1:39Speaker 1: Haven't heard much out of Hatteras.
- 1:41Speaker 1: I also know that the boat yards are full right now with people getting ready for the kickoff to the charter season.
- 1:48Speaker 1: You know so that's why the fleet is really really small right now.
- 1:52Speaker 1: But the table set.
- 1:53Speaker 1: We know the Yellowfin are out there.
- 1:54Speaker 1: There's still a lot of Bluefin tuna offshore.
- 1:57Speaker 1: Now it's time to start seeing some Wahoos show up.
- 2:00Speaker 1: We'll move a little bit.
- 2:01Speaker 1: After that We'll see some of the first mahi of the year or maybe even a billfish.
- 2:05Speaker 1: We're well into March.
- 2:07Speaker 1: By the time we get into April It'll be.
- 2:09Speaker 1: Everything will be on go.
- 2:11Speaker 1: So we wait and we get ready for what we hope is a great offshore season.
- 2:15Speaker 1: Nothing going on in the intermediate waters that I'm aware of.
- 2:18Speaker 1: There has been some sea bass activity for guys bottom fishing, but I did not hear any of that either.
- 2:25Speaker 1: In the surf Some of the first scattered puppy drum of the year are being caught, mostly on Hatteras Highland, but a few north of Oregon Inlet as well.
- 2:34Speaker 1: These are puppy drum in the slot size and you need to be patient because they're not thick.
- 2:40Speaker 1: But you can go, get something besides a skate or a shark.
- 2:44Speaker 1: At least you have some potential and in that fishery will be expecting blow toads will be the next thing that happens, and then some sea mullet after that.
- 2:52Speaker 1: So today is going to be a beautiful day.
- 2:55Speaker 1: Tomorrow the weather is going to diminish.
- 2:58Speaker 1: By midday we're going to have 90% chance of rain and for our offshore guys, when that wind goes around to the southeast at 15 to 20.
- 3:06Speaker 1: That's the kiss of death.
- 3:08Speaker 1: It scatters the grass lines, it makes it rainy and the fish somehow or another don't like to bite when the wind is blowing out of the southeast.
- 3:16Speaker 1: That's for offshore.
- 3:17Speaker 1: I can't really speak to the surf fishing because I'm just not an experienced surf fisherman.
- 3:21Speaker 1: Where there is some really good fishing is back in the sound and in these creeks that run off the sound of these estuaries.
- 3:28Speaker 1: Right now a very good speckled trout bite going on.
- 3:32Speaker 1: You need to go to your favorite spot, but don't be afraid to move around a little bit.
- 3:36Speaker 1: Also, change your colors most every time you go is a good idea because the trout are picky.
- 3:43Speaker 1: They're funny that way.
- 3:45Speaker 1: There's also been some good catches of puppy drum, especially back of Hatteras and Okokote.
- 3:49Speaker 1: The puppy drum bite is better down that way, but your lover, catch a puppy drum anywhere you go in the Pamlico Sound or any of the surrounding waters.
- 3:57Speaker 1: And that brings us to the freshwater fishing.
- 4:00Speaker 1: Some of these areas are crossover areas where a creek off the sound starts out as salt ends up brackish and it's not uncommon to catch a bass and a rockfish and a trout all in the same creek.
- 4:14Speaker 1: So that's going on.
- 4:15Speaker 1: Charlie Hange told me today that it is time for the crappie and white perch to begin, especially over here in Hyde County, as they get on their beds and begin spawning.
- 4:26Speaker 1: So that's good.
- 4:26Speaker 1: We mentioned some largemouth bass.
- 4:28Speaker 1: That's happening as well and there's no telling what else you might would catch.
- 4:33Speaker 1: A lot of opportunity in the freshwater areas and this is a chance for locals to get out, get on the bank.
- 4:38Speaker 1: You mostly don't need a boat and if you do need a boat you can get away with a John boat or a kayak or a canoe, but a lot of it can be done from the lounge chair, which is why I like it.
- 4:47Speaker 1: So get that a go and get the men, as if you can afford them and can find them.
- 4:52Speaker 1: But other than that, your crankbaits or spinnerbaits, things like that, or a fly rod A good fly rod will catch you some of that kind of stuff as well.
- 5:00Speaker 1: So that's what's going on in the on the fishing front, on the out of banks.
- 5:03Speaker 1: As we approach the weekend, I'll let you know what happens If anything bust loose.
- 5:07Speaker 1: We'll talk about it.
- 5:08Speaker 1: We'll talk about it on Monday morning.
- 5:10Speaker 1: That's my fishing port for you on this Friday.
- 5:13Speaker 1: Good fishing, good luck, be safe.
