- 0:02Speaker 1: Life Audio The Bible Study Podcast, Episode nine eighty five. Today,
- 0:08Speaker 1: The Bible Study Podcast continues the study of the Book
- 0:11Speaker 1: of Exodus with chapter twenty eight. Welcome to the Bible
- 0:16Speaker 1: Study Podcast. I'm your host, Chris Kristensen. This is the
- 0:20Speaker 1: third of a DIY chapter We're going to have some
- 0:22Speaker 1: more later on, and the first of two chapters about priests.
- 0:27Speaker 1: We may cover both today, we'll have to see how
- 0:29Speaker 1: it goes. But first a word from this sponsor. We
- 0:33Speaker 1: start out with the priestly garments Chapter twenty eight. Have Arin,
- 0:36Speaker 1: your brother brought to you among the Israelites, along with
- 0:40Speaker 1: his sons Nadab and Abie, who Elizar and Ethamar, so
- 0:45Speaker 1: that they may serve me as priests. Make sacred garments
- 0:48Speaker 1: for your brother Erin to give him dignity on honor.
- 0:51Speaker 1: Tell all the skilled workers to whom I have given
- 0:53Speaker 1: wisdom in such matters, that they are to make garments
- 0:56Speaker 1: for Aarin for his consecrations, so that he may serve
- 0:59Speaker 1: me as priest. These are the garments they are to make,
- 1:02Speaker 1: a breast piece, an ephod, a robe, a woven tunic,
- 1:07Speaker 1: a turban, and a sash. They are to make these
- 1:10Speaker 1: sacred garments for your brother Aaron and his sons, so
- 1:13Speaker 1: that they may serve me as priests have them. Use
- 1:16Speaker 1: gold and blue, purple and scarlet yarn and fine linen.
- 1:20Speaker 1: So we're going to make some things for Aaron to
- 1:23Speaker 1: wear that he can have dignity, so he's going to
- 1:25Speaker 1: look like a high priest. One of the things I
- 1:27Speaker 1: didn't say last time when we were talking about the
- 1:29Speaker 1: tabernacle blue, purple, and scarlet. These would be more expensive dyes,
- 1:33Speaker 1: especially purple. The Phoenicians actually get their name from a
- 1:37Speaker 1: purple dye that comes from sea snails, and this is
- 1:43Speaker 1: so expensive that it's really reserved as a royal color,
- 1:46Speaker 1: or in this case a priestly color. The ephod. Make
- 1:49Speaker 1: the ephod of gold and of blue, purple and silver
- 1:53Speaker 1: yarn and a finely twisted linen, the work of skilled hands.
- 1:57Speaker 1: It is to have two shoulder pieces attached to two
- 2:00Speaker 1: of its corners so it can be fastened. Its skillfully
- 2:04Speaker 1: woven waistband is to be like it, of one piece
- 2:08Speaker 1: with the ephod and made of gold and with purple,
- 2:11Speaker 1: blue and scarlet yarn, and with finally twisted linen. Take
- 2:15Speaker 1: two onyx stones engrave on them. The name of the
- 2:18Speaker 1: sons of Israel in the order of their birth, six
- 2:22Speaker 1: names on one stone and the remaining six on the other.
- 2:25Speaker 1: Engrave the names of the sons of Israel on the
- 2:28Speaker 1: two stones the way a gem cutter engraves a seal.
- 2:32Speaker 1: Then mount the stones in gold philigree settings and fasten
- 2:36Speaker 1: them onto the shoulder pieces of the ephod as memorial
- 2:39Speaker 1: stones for the sons of Israel. Aaron is to bear
- 2:42Speaker 1: the names on his shoulders as a memorial before the Lord.
- 2:46Speaker 1: Make gold filigree settings and two braided chains of pure
- 2:50Speaker 1: gold like a rope, and attach the chains to the settings.
- 2:55Speaker 1: So Erin is to wear this garment here at epod.
- 2:58Speaker 1: It is really just a robe that is a special
- 3:01Speaker 1: robe here, but it has these two stones on one
- 3:05Speaker 1: oner eather shoulder with each with the names of six
- 3:09Speaker 1: tribes of Israel or six of the Suns. And you
- 3:14Speaker 1: inscribe it like you would do a seal. That is
- 3:16Speaker 1: a seal that you would use with sealing wax, not
- 3:19Speaker 1: the pinniped that we're talking about there. And so we're
- 3:23Speaker 1: gonna make this fancy garment for Aaron. And then the
- 3:26Speaker 1: breast piece fashion a breastpiece for making decisions. The work
- 3:30Speaker 1: of skilled hands. Make it like the epot of gold,
- 3:33Speaker 1: and of blue, purple and scarlet yarn, and of finally
- 3:36Speaker 1: twisted linen. It is to be square, a span long
- 3:40Speaker 1: and a span wide, and folded double. Then mount four
- 3:44Speaker 1: rows of precious stones on it. The first four shall
- 3:47Speaker 1: be Carnelian, chrysolite, and beryl. The second row shall be turquoise, lapis,
- 3:53Speaker 1: lazuli an emerald. The third row shall be jacinth agate
- 3:58Speaker 1: and amethyst. The fourth row show be topaz onyx and jasper.
- 4:02Speaker 1: Mount them in gold filigree settings. There are to be
- 4:05Speaker 1: twelve stones, one for each of the names of the
- 4:08Speaker 1: Sons of Israel, each engraved like a seal with the
- 4:11Speaker 1: name of one of the twelve tribes. From the breast piece,
- 4:14Speaker 1: make braided chains of pure gold like a rope. Make
- 4:17Speaker 1: two gold rings for it, and fasten them to two
- 4:20Speaker 1: corners of the breast piece. Fasten the two gold chains
- 4:23Speaker 1: to the rings at the corners of the breast piece,
- 4:26Speaker 1: and the other ends of the chains to the two settings.
- 4:30Speaker 1: Attach them to the shoulder pieces at the ethod at
- 4:33Speaker 1: the front. Make two gold rings and attach them to
- 4:36Speaker 1: the other two corners of the breastpiece. On the inside
- 4:39Speaker 1: edge next to the ephod. Make two more gold rings
- 4:42Speaker 1: and attach them to the bottom of the shoulder pieces
- 4:45Speaker 1: on the front of the epod, close to the seam
- 4:48Speaker 1: just above the waist band of the ephod. The rings
- 4:51Speaker 1: of the breastpiece are to be tied to the rings
- 4:53Speaker 1: of the epod with blue cords connecting to it at
- 4:56Speaker 1: the waistband, so that the breast piece will not swing
- 4:59Speaker 1: out from the e Whenever Aaron enters the Holy Place,
- 5:02Speaker 1: he will bear the aims of the Sons of Israel
- 5:04Speaker 1: over his heart on the breast piece of decision as
- 5:07Speaker 1: continuing memorial before the Lord. Also put the Urim and
- 5:11Speaker 1: Thunim in the breast piece so that they may be
- 5:14Speaker 1: over Aaron's heart whenever he enters the presence of the Lord.
- 5:18Speaker 1: Thus Erin will bear the means of making decisions for
- 5:21Speaker 1: the Israelites over his heart before the Lord. Okay, so
- 5:25Speaker 1: he's got this over garment that is over his heart.
- 5:29Speaker 1: It's again got precious stones. It's got the names of
- 5:31Speaker 1: the twelve tribes on it. So he's got them over
- 5:34Speaker 1: his heart. As he comes into the holiest of holies
- 5:37Speaker 1: again once a year in the date of atonement, and
- 5:40Speaker 1: then He's also going to have the urum and the Thunim,
- 5:43Speaker 1: which we haven't talked about. But these are basically something
- 5:47Speaker 1: like dice that will be used for making decisions. So
- 5:52Speaker 1: you basically throw them down and based on what they say,
- 5:57Speaker 1: you get a answer from God and the ideas that
- 6:01Speaker 1: he's carrying these as well as he goes in. We
- 6:04Speaker 1: don't really have a description of what they look like,
- 6:06Speaker 1: but we know their purpose. Their purpose is to determine
- 6:10Speaker 1: the will of God. I assume you throw them, and
- 6:13Speaker 1: therefore you can tell, for instance, what the answer is,
- 6:16Speaker 1: and they'll use it later on in this book, but
- 6:19Speaker 1: we don't really get a good description of it. Other
- 6:23Speaker 1: priestly garments make the robe of the epot entirely a
- 6:25Speaker 1: blue cloth with an opening for the head in its center.
- 6:29Speaker 1: There will be a woven edge like a collar around
- 6:31Speaker 1: this opening so that it will not tear. Make pomegranates
- 6:34Speaker 1: a blue, purple and scarlet yarn around the hem of
- 6:38Speaker 1: the robe, with gold bells between them. The gold bells
- 6:41Speaker 1: and pomegranates are to alternate around the hem of the robe.
- 6:44Speaker 1: Aaron must wear it when he ministers. The sound of
- 6:47Speaker 1: the bells will be heard when he enters the holy
- 6:49Speaker 1: place before the Lord, and when he comes out, so
- 6:52Speaker 1: that he will not die, make a plate of pure
- 6:55Speaker 1: gold and engrave on it as on a seal holy
- 6:59Speaker 1: to the Lord. Fasten a blue cord to it, and
- 7:01Speaker 1: attach it to the turban. It is to be on
- 7:03Speaker 1: the front of the turban. It will be on Erin's forehead,
- 7:07Speaker 1: and he will bear the guilt involved in the sacred
- 7:10Speaker 1: gifts the Israelites consecrate. Whatever their gifts may be, it
- 7:14Speaker 1: will be on Erin's forehead continually, so that they will
- 7:17Speaker 1: be acceptable to the Lord. We have the tunic of
- 7:20Speaker 1: fine linen, and make the turban of fine linen. The
- 7:23Speaker 1: sash is to be the work of an embroiderer. Make tunics, sashes,
- 7:27Speaker 1: and caps for Aaron's sons, to give them dignity and honor.
- 7:30Speaker 1: After you put these clothes on your brother, Aaron and
- 7:33Speaker 1: his sons, annoint and ordain them, consecrate them so that
- 7:37Speaker 1: they may serve me as priests. Make linen undergarments as
- 7:41Speaker 1: a covering for the body, reaching from the waist to
- 7:43Speaker 1: the thigh. Aaron and his sons must wear them whenever
- 7:46Speaker 1: they enter the tent of Meaning or approach the altar
- 7:49Speaker 1: to minister in the holy place so that they will
- 7:52Speaker 1: not incur guilt and die. This is to be a
- 7:54Speaker 1: lasting ordinance for Arin and his descendants. One interesting thing
- 8:00Speaker 1: here is we're getting these description of what to put
- 8:02Speaker 1: on it put on a pomegran that's put on a
- 8:04Speaker 1: bell's we understand why the bells are there to alert
- 8:07Speaker 1: your presence so that you don't die. That seems like
- 8:10Speaker 1: a good thing. We don't know why palmegrant it's. It
- 8:12Speaker 1: doesn't say there was a artistic choice on the behalf
- 8:16Speaker 1: of God. I do not know, but that's the instruction.
- 8:20Speaker 1: I'm going to leave the next chapter, the Consecration of
- 8:23Speaker 1: the Priests, till next week because it's a longer chapter here.
- 8:27Speaker 1: But basically, Erin has special garments. The priests have special
- 8:32Speaker 1: garments because they have this special role. And remember that
- 8:35Speaker 1: one twelfth of the people, the people of Erin, will
- 8:40Speaker 1: have this role in perpetuity. Is the plan here as
- 8:45Speaker 1: they stand at Mount Sinai that this is to be
- 8:48Speaker 1: the priests. They're not going to have a portion in
- 8:51Speaker 1: terms of a land that they're going to be given
- 8:53Speaker 1: like the others, but instead they're going to have levite
- 8:56Speaker 1: cities and they're going to be the sons of Levite
- 8:59Speaker 1: there of God and special role and special garments. With that,
- 9:04Speaker 1: we're going to end this episode of the Bible Study Podcast.
