Speaker 1: Preface. Either the honorable gentleman is in the right or
• 0:05
Speaker 1: he is not, is a phrase in very common use
• 0:08
Speaker 1: within the walls of Parliament. This drama may have a plot,
• 0:13
Speaker 1: or it may not. The songs may be poetry or
• 0:17
Speaker 1: they may not. And the whole affair, from beginning to
• 0:20
Speaker 1: end may be great nonsense or it may not, just
• 0:24
Speaker 1: as the honorable gentleman or lady who reads it may
• 0:28
  Speaker 1: happen to think.
• 0:30
  Speaker 2: So.
• 0:30
Speaker 1: Retaining his own private and particular opinion upon the subject,
• 0:34
Speaker 1: an opinion which was formed upwards of a year ago
• 0:36
Speaker 1: when he wrote the piece, the author leaves every such
• 0:40
Speaker 1: gentleman or lady to form his or hers as he
• 0:43
Speaker 1: or she may think proper, without saying one word to
• 0:46
Speaker 1: influence or conciliate them. All he wishes to say is
• 0:51
Speaker 1: this that he hopes mister Brahm and all the performers
• 0:55
Speaker 1: who assisted in the representation of this opera will accept
• 0:59
Speaker 1: his warmest thanks for the interest they evinced in it
• 1:03
Speaker 1: from its very first rehearsal, and for their zealous efforts
• 1:07
Speaker 1: in his behalf, efforts which have crowned it with a
• 1:10
Speaker 1: degree of success far exceeding his most sanguine anticipations and
• 1:15
Speaker 1: of which no form of words could speak his acknowledgment.
• 1:19
Speaker 1: It is needless to add that the libretto of an
• 1:22
Speaker 1: opera must be, to a certain extent a mere vehicle
• 1:26
Speaker 1: for the music, that it is scarcely fair or reasonable
• 1:30
Speaker 1: to judge it by those strict rules of criticism which
• 1:33
Speaker 1: would be justly applicable to a five act tragedy or
• 1:37
  Speaker 1: a finished comedy.

Speaker 1: John Maddox and laborers unloading it. Implements of husbandry et

Speaker 1: cetera are scattered about a gate on one side. John
• 2:57
Speaker 1: Maddox is in the cart and dismounts at the conclusion
• 3:01
  Speaker 1: of the chorus.
• 3:04
Speaker 4: To the very old days, shine.
• 3:09
Speaker 10: That holds the mono line hands Mary all this time
• 3:13
Speaker 10: gay year, the time of rags crossed the year.
• 3:25
Speaker 4: Between land, the winter.
• 3:29
Speaker 6: Night around the place, day.
• 3:39
Speaker 4: Shine that holds the monarch line, and this time gave
• 3:46
Speaker 4: the year the time.
• 3:50
Speaker 2: Joy again in the year well done, My lads, are
• 3:54
Speaker 2: good days work and a warm one. Here Tom two, villager,
• 3:59
Speaker 2: run under the house and ask miss Rose to send
• 4:02
Speaker 2: out some beer for the men and a jug for
• 4:05
Speaker 2: master medics. And do you hear Tom, tell miss Rose
• 4:09
Speaker 2: it's a fine evening, and that if she'll step out herself,
• 4:12
Speaker 2: it'll do her good and do me good in the bargain.
• 4:15
  Speaker 1: Exit villager.
• 4:17
Speaker 2: That's right, my lads, stow these sheaves away before the
• 4:21
Speaker 2: sun goes down. Let's begin fresh in the morning, without
• 4:24
Speaker 2: any leavings of today. By this time tomorrow the last
• 4:28
Speaker 2: load will have been carried, and then for our harvest home.
• 4:38
Speaker 1: Shine crossed, inter Martin Stokes.
• 4:53
Speaker 6: Very good, very good. Indeed I always sing while you work,
• 4:56
Speaker 6: Capital Custom. I always do when I work, and I
• 4:59
Speaker 6: never work a at all when I can help it.
• 5:01
Speaker 6: Another Capital Custom, John, old fellow, how are you give
• 5:04
Speaker 6: us your hand? Hearty squeeze, good shake, Capital Custom number three.
• 5:09
Speaker 6: Fine dry weather for the harvest, John, talking of that,
• 5:12
Speaker 6: I'm dry too. You always give away plenty of beer
• 5:15
Speaker 6: here Capital Custom number four. Trouble you for a loan
• 5:18
Speaker 6: of that can, John.
• 5:20
Speaker 1: John, taking it from the cart.
• 5:22
Speaker 2: Here's the can, But as to there being anything good
• 5:25
Speaker 2: in it, it's as dry as the weather, and as
• 5:27
  Speaker 2: empty as you.
• 5:32
Speaker 1: Laughing boisterously is suddenly checked by a look from Martin.
• 5:37
Speaker 6: Hello, John Hello. I have often told you before, mister Maddox,
• 5:41
Speaker 6: that I don't consider you in a situation of life
• 5:43
Speaker 6: which entitles you to make jokes, far less to laugh
• 5:46
Speaker 6: at them. If you must make a joke, do it
• 5:48
Speaker 6: solemnly and respectfully. If I laugh, that's quite enough, and
• 5:52
Speaker 6: it must be far more gratifying to your feelings than
• 5:55
Speaker 6: any contortions of that enormous mouth of yours.
• 5:58
Speaker 2: Well, perhaps, as you say, I ought to make jokes
• 6:01
Speaker 2: till I arrive like you at the dignity of a
• 6:04
Speaker 2: small piece of ground and a cottage. But I must
• 6:07
Speaker 2: laugh at a joke sometimes.
• 6:09
Speaker 6: Must must you? Rather, presuming fellow, this Mattox.
• 6:13
Speaker 2: Why when you make one of them rum jokes of yours, cud,
• 6:18
Speaker 2: I must laugh? Then?
• 6:20
Speaker 6: Oh ah, you may laugh then, John, always laugh at
• 6:23
Speaker 6: my jokes. Capital custom number five. No harm in that,
• 6:27
Speaker 6: because you can't help it, you know. Knowing fellow, though.
• 6:31
Speaker 2: Remember that joke about the old cow as you made
• 6:35
Speaker 2: five years ago. God, that was a joke. I shall
• 6:41
Speaker 2: never forget that joke. I never see a cow to
• 6:44
Speaker 2: this day without laughing.
• 6:47
Speaker 6: Ha ha ha. Very good, very good, devilish clever fellow. This well, Jack,
• 6:53
Speaker 6: you behave yourself well all the evening, and perhaps I
• 6:56
Speaker 6: may make that joke again before the day's out.
• 6:59
Speaker 2: Thankye, that's very kind.
• 7:01
Speaker 6: Don't mention it. Don't mention it. But I say, John,
• 7:05
Speaker 6: I called to speak to you about more important matters.
• 7:08
  Speaker 6: Something's wrong here, ain't there?
• 7:10
  Speaker 1: Mysteriously long?
• 7:13
Speaker 2: You're always fancying something.
• 7:15
Speaker 6: Wrong, fancying Come I like that, I say, why don't
• 7:20
Speaker 6: you keep your harvest home at home tomorrow?
• 7:22
  Speaker 7: Night.
• 7:23
Speaker 6: Why are we all to go up to the Squire's
• 7:25
Speaker 6: as if we couldn't be merry in Benson's barn? And
• 7:28
Speaker 6: why is the Squire always coming down here looking after
• 7:31
Speaker 6: some people and cutting out other people? Ain't that wrong?
• 7:35
Speaker 6: Where's George Edmonds old Benson's so fond of? And that
• 7:38
Speaker 6: Lucy was fond of two once upon a time? Eh?
• 7:41
Speaker 6: Ain't that wrong? Where's your sweetheart Rose? Ain't her walkings
• 7:46
Speaker 6: and gigglings and whisperings and simperings with the Squire's friend,
• 7:50
Speaker 6: mister Sparkin's flam the talk of the whole place? Nothing
• 7:53
  Speaker 6: wrong there, eh?
• 7:55
  Speaker 1: Maddox goes up.
• 7:56
Speaker 6: Had him there? I knew there was something wrong. I'll
• 7:59
Speaker 6: keep a shit upon these doings, for I don't like
• 8:02
Speaker 6: these new fangled customs. It was all very well in
• 8:05
Speaker 6: the old time to see the squire's father come riding
• 8:07
Speaker 6: among the people on his bay cob nodding to the
• 8:10
Speaker 6: common folks, shaking hands with me, and all that sort
• 8:12
Speaker 6: of thing. But when you change the old country gentleman
• 8:15
Speaker 6: into a dashing fop from London, the steady old steward
• 8:18
Speaker 6: into mister Sparkin's flam cases very different. We shall see
• 8:23
Speaker 6: But if I might tell Miss Lucy Benson a bit
• 8:25
Speaker 6: of my mind, I should say, stick to an independent
• 8:28
Speaker 6: young fellow like George Edmonds, and depend upon it. You
• 8:31
Speaker 6: will be happier than you would with all the show
• 8:34
Speaker 6: and glitter of a squire's lady. And I should say
• 8:37
Speaker 6: to Rose, very solemn, Rose.
• 8:40
Speaker 1: Rose enters unperceived with fear, Rose Rose starting Lord.
• 8:46
Speaker 11: Bless us with a hollow voice. Why it's mister Stokes,
• 8:50
Speaker 11: What on earth is the matter with him?
• 8:52
Speaker 1: Martin? Not seeing her?
• 8:54
Speaker 6: Rose, If you would be happy and contented, if you
• 8:57
Speaker 6: would escape destruction, shield your from dangerous peril, and save
• 9:01
Speaker 6: yourself from horrid ruin, what dreadful words, you will at
• 9:06
Speaker 6: once and without delay bestow your hand on John Maddox.
• 9:10
Speaker 6: Or if you would aspire to a higher rank in
• 9:11
Speaker 6: life and a loftier station in society, you will cultivate
• 9:15
Speaker 6: the affection of mister Stokes. Mister Martin Stokes, a young
• 9:19
Speaker 6: gentleman of great mental attractions and very considerable personal charms,
• 9:24
Speaker 6: leaving the false and fatal phlam to the ignominious fate. Witch.
• 9:29
  Speaker 11: Why mister Stokes.
• 9:30
Speaker 6: Ignominious fate witch, Dear, he must.
• 9:33
Speaker 11: Be in a fit mister Stokes.
• 9:35
Speaker 6: Eh Ah, Miss Rose, it's you, is it me?
• 9:39
Speaker 11: Yes? And here if I've been waiting all this time
• 9:41
Speaker 11: while you were talking nonsense to yourself, here I have
• 9:44
Speaker 11: brought you some beer.
• 9:46
Speaker 6: Oh, miss Rose. If you go on in this way,
• 9:48
Speaker 6: you'll bring us to our beer instead of bringing our
• 9:51
  Speaker 6: beer to us.
• 9:52
Speaker 1: Looking round, you may.
• 9:54
Speaker 6: Laugh if you want to, very much, John, be.
• 10:01
Speaker 11: Quiet, oath and pray, sir to Martin, to what may
• 10:06
Speaker 11: your most humorous observation refer?
• 10:09
Speaker 6: Why, my dear miss Rose, You know my way, always friendly,
• 10:13
Speaker 6: always thinking of the welfare of those I like best,
• 10:16
Speaker 6: and very seldom receiving any gratitude in return.
• 10:19
Speaker 11: I know you very seldom deserve any Ah.
• 10:22
Speaker 6: That's exactly my meaning. That's the way you see. The
• 10:25
Speaker 6: moment I begin to throw out a hint to one
• 10:27
Speaker 6: of my dear friends, out comes some unkind and rude remark.
• 10:31
Speaker 6: But I bear it all for their sakes. I won't
• 10:34
Speaker 6: allow you to raise my ill nature. You shan't stop me.
• 10:37
Speaker 6: I was going to say, don't you think now, don't
• 10:41
Speaker 6: you think that you don't be angry? Make rather, don't
• 10:46
Speaker 6: color up rather too free with mister Sparkin's flam I
• 10:50
  Speaker 6: make free.
• 10:51
Speaker 11: With mister Sparkins's flam quit you odious insolent creature.
• 10:55
Speaker 6: Ah, of course, always the way I told you, so
• 10:58
  Speaker 6: I knew you'd say that.
• 11:00
Speaker 11: And you John, you mean spirited scarecrow. Will you stand
• 11:03
Speaker 11: there and see me insulted by an oap is impertinent?
• 11:06
  Speaker 6: Go on?
• 11:07
  Speaker 5: Go on?
• 11:08
Speaker 1: A gun fired? Hello, looking off?
• 11:12
Speaker 6: Here they are the Squire and mister Sparkin's flam.
• 11:16
Speaker 1: Rose, hastily adjusting her dress.
• 11:19
Speaker 11: My goodness, mister Sparr, run, John, run, there's a deer.
• 11:23
Speaker 12: John not moving very dare I dare say? Run?
• 11:29
Speaker 11: Tell my uncle and Lucy, said mister Sparr, I mean
• 11:32
Speaker 11: that the Squire's come.
• 11:33
Speaker 2: I wouldn't have gone anyhow, But nobody need go now,
• 11:37
Speaker 2: for here they are. Now I am extinguished for the
• 11:41
Speaker 2: rest of the day.
• 11:43
Speaker 1: Enter through the gate, Squire Norton and mister Sparkin's flam
• 11:46
Speaker 1: dressed for sporting with guns, et cetera, and two gamekeepers
• 11:52
Speaker 1: on the other side, Old Vinson and Lucy Martin. During
• 11:55
Speaker 1: the whole scene, thrusting himself in the squire's way to
• 11:58
Speaker 1: be taken notice of squire to gamekeeper and putting down
• 12:03
  Speaker 1: his gun.
• 12:04
Speaker 3: Take the birds into the house Benson. We've had a
• 12:08
Speaker 3: good day sport, but a tiring one, And as the
• 12:11
Speaker 3: load is heavy for my fellows, you'll let our game
• 12:14
Speaker 3: remain where it is. I could not offer it to
• 12:17
  Speaker 3: a better friend.
• 12:18
Speaker 5: Your honor is very good, but nay.
• 12:21
Speaker 3: You make a merit of receiving the smallest favor.
• 12:25
Speaker 5: Not a merit of receiving, nor a boast of refusing it.
• 12:29
Speaker 5: But a man in humble station should be cautious how
• 12:32
Speaker 5: he receives favors from those above him, which he never
• 12:36
Speaker 5: asks and can never return. I have had too many
• 12:39
Speaker 5: such favors forced upon me by your Honor lately, and
• 12:43
Speaker 5: would rather not increase the number.
• 12:45
Speaker 3: But such a trifle, a trifle.
• 12:48
Speaker 5: From an equal, but a condescension from a superior. Let
• 12:52
Speaker 5: your men carry your birds up to the hall, sir,
• 12:55
Speaker 5: or if they are tired, mine shall do it for them, and.
• 12:59
Speaker 1: Welcome retires up flam aside.
• 13:03
Speaker 4: Swine and independence, leather breeches and liberty.
• 13:08
Speaker 3: At least I may be permitted to leave a few
• 13:10
Speaker 3: braves as a present to the ladies Lucy, I hope
• 13:13
Speaker 3: will not object crosses to her.
• 13:16
Speaker 8: I feel much flattered by your Honor's politeness and and
• 13:23
  Speaker 8: my cousin.
• 13:24
Speaker 11: Means to say, sir, that we're very much obliged to
• 13:26
Speaker 11: your honor and mister Flam for your politeness, and that
• 13:28
Speaker 11: we are very willing to accept of anything your honor.
• 13:31
Speaker 4: Flam aside, condescending, little savage.
• 13:36
Speaker 3: You have spoken well, both for yourself and your cousin. Flam.
• 13:40
Speaker 3: This is Rose, the pretty little.
• 13:43
Speaker 4: Rose, you know, No can I ever forget the charming Rose,
• 13:48
  Speaker 4: the beautiful, the.
• 13:52
Speaker 1: The aside cabbage, Rose, Squire aside.
• 13:58
Speaker 3: Keep that girl engaged while I talk to the other one.
• 14:01
Speaker 4: Oh, mister Flam, Oh miss Rose.
• 14:06
  Speaker 1: He salutes her.
• 14:08
Speaker 5: Your honor will not object to taste our ale after
• 14:10
Speaker 5: your day's sport. The afternoon is fresh and cool, as
• 14:15
Speaker 5: will be pleasant here in the air here, Ben Thomas,
• 14:20
Speaker 5: bring mugs here, quick, quick, and a seat for his.
• 14:24
Speaker 1: Honor, excell Aunt Benson Maddox, et cetera.
• 14:29
Speaker 3: It will be delightful, won't it?
• 14:31
Speaker 4: Flam inexpressibly charming? Assigned an amateur t garden.
• 14:38
Speaker 1: He retires a little up with Rose, she coquetting squire
• 14:42
  Speaker 1: to Lucy.
• 14:43
Speaker 3: And in such society, how much the pleasure will be enhanced?
• 14:48
Speaker 8: Your honor knows I ought not to listen to you,
• 14:51
  Speaker 8: George Edmunds.
• 14:52
Speaker 3: Would Edmunds a roustic? You cannot love that Edmunds, Lucy
• 14:58
Speaker 3: forget him? Remember your own worth?
• 15:02
Speaker 8: I wish I could, Sir. My heart will tell me,
• 15:05
Speaker 8: though weak and silly as I am, that I cannot
• 15:08
Speaker 8: better show the consciousness of my own worth than by
• 15:11
Speaker 8: remaining true to my thirst and early love. Your honor
• 15:15
Speaker 8: rouses my foolish pride. But real, true love is not
• 15:18
Speaker 8: to be forgotten easily. Love is not a feeling to
• 15:22
Speaker 8: pass away, like the balmy breath of a summer day.
• 15:26
Speaker 8: It is not It cannot be laid aside. It is
• 15:30
Speaker 8: not a thing to forget or hide. It clings to
• 15:34
Speaker 8: the heart. Ah, woe is me, as the ivy clings
• 15:38
Speaker 8: to the old oak tree. Love is not a passion
• 15:41
Speaker 8: of earthly mold, as athirst for honor, or fame or gold.
• 15:47
Speaker 8: For when all these wishes have died away, the deep,
• 15:50
Speaker 8: strong love of a brighter day, though nourished in secret,
• 15:54
Speaker 8: consumes the more as the slow rust eats to the
• 15:57
  Speaker 8: iron's core.
• 16:00
Speaker 1: Enter Old Benson, John Maddox, and villagers with jugs seats,
• 16:04
Speaker 1: et cetera. Squire Norton seats himself near Lucy and Rose
• 16:09
Speaker 1: contrives to sit near mister Spargain's flam which Martin and
• 16:14
Speaker 1: Maddox in vain endeavor to prevent lamb.
• 16:18
Speaker 3: You know these honest people, all tenants of my own.
• 16:22
Speaker 4: Oh yes, I know him. Pleasant fellows. This this is
• 16:27
Speaker 4: uh what's his name?
• 16:29
  Speaker 5: Martin?
• 16:30
Speaker 1: Sir Martin Stokes Martin starting forward.
• 16:34
Speaker 6: Ah ah, mister Stokes, at your service, sir. How do
• 16:38
  Speaker 6: you do, sir?
• 16:39
Speaker 1: Shaking flam by the hand while speaking.
• 16:42
Speaker 6: I hope you are quite well, sir. I am delighted
• 16:44
Speaker 6: to see you looking so well, Sir. I hope your
• 16:46
Speaker 6: majestic father and your fashionable mother are in the enjoyment
• 16:50
  Speaker 6: of good health.
• 16:50
  Speaker 4: Sir.
• 16:51
Speaker 6: I should have spoken to you before, sir, only you
• 16:53
Speaker 6: have been so very much engaged that I couldn't succeed
• 16:56
Speaker 6: in catching your honorable eye. Very happy to see you, sir.
• 17:00
Speaker 4: Ah. Pleasant fellow, this Martin, agreeable manners, no reserve about him, Sir.
• 17:06
Speaker 6: You do me a great deal of honor, mister Norton, Sir,
• 17:09
Speaker 6: I have the honor of drinking your remarkably good health.
• 17:12
Speaker 6: I admire you, sir.
• 17:14
Speaker 1: Squire laughing ha, Sir, I feel highly gratified.
• 17:19
Speaker 12: I'm sure Martin aside he's gratified.
• 17:24
Speaker 6: I flatter myself. I have produced a slight impression.
• 17:26
Speaker 1: Here drinks turns round, sees Maddox.
• 17:30
Speaker 2: Ah Ox Ox, Who do you call Ox? Maddox is
• 17:37
  Speaker 2: my name?
• 17:38
Speaker 4: Oh mad Ox True? I forgot the lunacy your health,
• 17:42
  Speaker 4: mad Ox.
• 17:44
Speaker 1: Squire, rising and coming forward.
• 17:47
Speaker 3: Com lamb another glass. Here, friends, is success to our
• 17:51
  Speaker 3: harvest home.
• 17:53
Speaker 6: Here hear a most appropriate toast, most eloquently given, a
• 17:57
Speaker 6: charming sentiment, delightfully expressed, gentlemen to villagers. Allow me to
• 18:03
Speaker 6: have the pleasure of proposing, mister Norton, if you please
• 18:07
Speaker 6: take your time from me.
• 18:08
Speaker 1: He gives the time, and they all cheer.
• 18:11
Speaker 6: Mister Norton, Sir, I beg to call upon you for
• 18:13
  Speaker 6: a song.
• 18:15
Speaker 1: Song, Squire Norton, that.
• 18:18
Speaker 3: Very wise head Old Esop said the bow should be
• 18:22
Speaker 3: sometimes loose, keep it tight forever the string you sever.
• 18:26
Speaker 3: Let's turn his old moral to use the world forgot
• 18:31
Speaker 3: and let us Yet the glass our spirits buoying revel
• 18:35
Speaker 3: tonight in those moments bright which make life worth enjoying.
• 18:40
Speaker 3: The cares of the day old moralists say are quite
• 18:44
Speaker 3: enough to perplex one then drive today's sorrow away till tomorrow,
• 18:49
Speaker 3: then put it off till the next one, Today.
• 18:54
Speaker 4: Old morrow tomorrow, and then to the next one.
• 19:03
Speaker 3: Some plotting old crones, the heartless drones, appeal to my
• 19:08
Speaker 3: cool reflection and ask me whether such nights can ever
• 19:13
Speaker 3: charm sober recollection. Yes, yes, I cry. I'll grieve and
• 19:18
Speaker 3: die when those I love forsake me. But while friends
• 19:23
Speaker 3: so dear surround me here, let care if he can
• 19:27
Speaker 3: or take me the cares.
• 19:30
Speaker 4: Of the day old, say the one tomorrow and the
• 19:39
  Speaker 4: next one.
• 19:40
Speaker 1: During the chorus, Squire, Norton and Flamm resume their guns
• 19:44
Speaker 1: and go up the stage, followed by the various characters.
• 19:48
Speaker 1: The chorus concludes. As the scene closes. Scene too an
• 19:53
Speaker 1: open spot near the village with style and pathway leading
• 19:57
Speaker 1: to the church, which is seen in the distance. George
• 20:00
Speaker 1: Edmunds enters with a stick in his hand.
• 20:04
Speaker 7: How thickly the fallen leaves lie scattered at the feet
• 20:06
Speaker 7: of that old row of elm trees. When I first
• 20:09
Speaker 7: met Lucie on this spot, it was a fine spring day,
• 20:12
Speaker 7: and those same leaves were trembling in the sunshine, as
• 20:15
Speaker 7: green and bright as if their beauty would last for ever?
• 20:19
Speaker 7: What a contrast they present now, and how true an
• 20:22
Speaker 7: emblem of my own lost happiness. Autumn leaves, Autumn leaves
• 20:27
Speaker 7: lie strewn around me here, Autumn leaves, Autumn leaves, How sad?
• 20:32
Speaker 7: How cold? How drear? How like the hopes of childhood's day,
• 20:38
Speaker 7: thick clustering on the bough, How like those hopes? Is
• 20:41
Speaker 7: there decay? How faded are they now? Autumn leaves, Autumn
• 20:47
Speaker 7: leaves lie strewn around me here? Autumn leaves, Autumn leaves,
• 20:51
Speaker 7: How sad? How cold? How drear? Withered leaves, withered leaves
• 20:57
Speaker 7: that fly before the gale, Withered leaves, withered leaves, Ye
• 21:02
Speaker 7: tell a mournful tale, a love once true, and friends,
• 21:05
Speaker 7: once kind and happy moments fled, dispersed by every breath
• 21:10
Speaker 7: of wind, forgotten, changed or dead. Autumn leaves, Autumn leaves
• 21:14
Speaker 7: I strewn around me here, Autumn leaves, Autumn leaves, How sad?
• 21:19
Speaker 7: How cold? How drear? An hour passed the old time?
• 21:24
Speaker 7: And still know Lucy tis useless lingering here? I'll wait
• 21:28
Speaker 7: no longer. A female crossing the meadow tis rose, the
• 21:33
Speaker 7: bearer of a letter or message.
• 21:35
  Speaker 12: Perhaps enter rose.
• 21:37
  Speaker 1: She avoids him.
• 21:39
Speaker 7: No, then I will see Lucy at once without a moment's.
• 21:42
Speaker 1: Delay, going no, No, you can't, aside.
• 21:46
Speaker 11: As I'll certainly be bloodshed. I'm quite certain, mister Flammer
• 21:49
Speaker 11: kill him. He offered me with the most insinuating speeches
• 21:52
Speaker 11: to cut John's throat at a moment's notice. And when
• 21:54
Speaker 11: the Squire complimented him on being a good shot, he
• 21:57
Speaker 11: said he should like to go bag the whole male
• 21:58
Speaker 11: population of the village.
• 22:00
Speaker 1: To him, you can't see her.
• 22:03
Speaker 7: Not see her, and she at home. Were you instructed
• 22:05
Speaker 7: to say this, Rose, I.
• 22:07
Speaker 11: Say it because I know you can't see her. She
• 22:09
  Speaker 11: is not well.
• 22:10
Speaker 7: And and mister Norton is here, you would say, mister Norton, Yes,
• 22:15
Speaker 7: mister Norton. Was he not there last evening? Was he
• 22:19
Speaker 7: not there the evening before? Is he not there at
• 22:21
  Speaker 7: this moment?
• 22:23
  Speaker 1: Intern John Maddox.
• 22:25
Speaker 2: Here at this moment? Of course he.
• 22:28
Speaker 1: Is, Rose aside John.
• 22:31
Speaker 2: Here, of course he is. Of course he was there
• 22:35
Speaker 2: last night, and of course he was there the evening before.
• 22:40
Speaker 2: He's always there, and so is his bosom friend and
• 22:43
Speaker 2: confidential demon, mister Sparkan's flam Oh, George, we're injured men.
• 22:51
Speaker 7: Both of us heartless girl.
• 22:54
Speaker 1: Edmunds retires up John to Rose faithless.
• 23:01
  Speaker 11: Don't call me a person.
• 23:03
Speaker 2: You are a person, purjured, treacherous, and deceiving. Oh, George,
• 23:09
Speaker 2: if you had seen what I have seen today, soft
• 23:12
Speaker 2: whisperings and loving smiles, gentle looks and encouraging sighs, such
• 23:19
Speaker 2: looks and size as used once upon a time to
• 23:22
Speaker 2: be bestowed on us, George, if you had seen the
• 23:26
Speaker 2: Squire making up to Lucy and Rose making up to Flam,
• 23:32
Speaker 2: that I am very glad you did not see it, George,
• 23:34
Speaker 2: very it would have broken your heart as it has
• 23:37
Speaker 2: broken mine. Oh Rose, could you break my heart?
• 23:42
Speaker 11: I could break your head with the greatest pleasure in
• 23:44
Speaker 11: mischief making, Booby. And if you don't make haste to
• 23:47
Speaker 11: wherever you're going, somebody that I know I will certainly
• 23:49
Speaker 11: do so, very quickly.
• 23:51
Speaker 2: Will he will he your friend, mister Flam. I suppose
• 23:56
Speaker 2: let him, that's all led.
• 23:58
  Speaker 1: Him tires up.
• 24:01
Speaker 11: Oh I'll let him. You needn't be afraid of my interfering. Dear, Dear,
• 24:04
Speaker 11: I wish mister Flamm would come, for I will own,
• 24:06
Speaker 11: notwithstanding what greater people may say, that I enjoy a
• 24:09
Speaker 11: little flirtation as much as any.
• 24:11
  Speaker 1: One song rose.
• 24:14
Speaker 11: Some folks who have grown old and sour say love
• 24:17
Speaker 11: does nothing but annoy the fact is they have had
• 24:19
Speaker 11: their hour, so envy what they can't enjoy. I like
• 24:23
Speaker 11: the glance, I like the sigh that does of ardent passion.
• 24:26
Speaker 11: Tell if some folks were as young as I, I
• 24:28
Speaker 11: am sure they'd like it quite as well. Oldin made
• 24:31
Speaker 11: and aunt so hate the men so well know how
• 24:34
Speaker 11: wise are harried. It makes them sad, not jealous when
• 24:37
Speaker 11: they see their poor dear nieces married. All men are
• 24:40
Speaker 11: fair and faults they know, and with deep sighs they
• 24:42
Speaker 11: assail em. It's so long since they tried men, though,
• 24:46
Speaker 11: I rather think their memories fail em. Here comes mister
• 24:50
Speaker 11: flan John. You'd better go. I know you'll be murdered here.
• 24:53
Speaker 2: I shall stop. Let him touch me, unleas you'll feel
• 24:57
Speaker 2: the weight of my indignation and flam.
• 25:01
Speaker 4: Nah, my charmer, punctual to my time. You see, my
• 25:06
Speaker 4: sweet little damus grows.
• 25:08
Speaker 2: John coming down a great deal, more like a monthly one,
• 25:13
Speaker 2: constantly changing and gone the moment you wear it.
• 25:17
  Speaker 11: Impertanent creature?
• 25:19
Speaker 4: Who is this poetical cauliflower.
• 25:21
Speaker 2: Don't pretend not to know me. You know who I
• 25:25
Speaker 2: am well enough as I live.
• 25:29
Speaker 4: It's the Ox. Retire Ox to your pasture, and don't
• 25:33
Speaker 4: rudely disturb the cooing of the doves. Go and Gray's Ox.
• 25:38
Speaker 2: Suppose I chose to remain here?
• 25:40
Speaker 4: Why then, why then you must be driven off?
• 25:44
Speaker 1: Mad Ox to Rose.
• 25:46
Speaker 4: Who's that other grasshopper?
• 25:48
Speaker 11: Hush, hush, for heaven's sake, don't let him hear you.
• 25:50
  Speaker 11: It's young Edmunds.
• 25:53
Speaker 4: And who the devil is? Young Edmunds? For beyond the
• 25:56
Speaker 4: natural inference that young Edmunds is the son of old Edmund.
• 26:00
Speaker 4: Curse me if the fame of young Edmunds has ever
• 26:02
  Speaker 4: reached my ears.
• 26:04
Speaker 1: Rose in a low tone.
• 26:06
Speaker 11: It's Lucy's former lover, whom she has given up for
• 26:09
  Speaker 11: the squire, the.
• 26:11
Speaker 4: Rejected cultivator, the same Ah. I guessed as much from
• 26:16
Speaker 4: his earthy appearance. But my darling grows, I must speak
• 26:20
  Speaker 4: with you, I.
• 26:21
Speaker 1: Must, putting his arm round her waist, seize John.
• 26:26
Speaker 4: Goodbye, Ox, goodbye. Pleasant walk to you, Ox.
• 26:32
Speaker 12: John not moving, thank ye, saying to you.
• 26:37
Speaker 4: That other clod pole must not stay here either.
• 26:40
Speaker 11: Yes, yes, he neither sees nor hear us prolet him
• 26:43
  Speaker 11: remain flammed.
• 26:44
Speaker 4: To John, you understand Ox, that it is my wish
• 26:48
Speaker 4: that you forthwith retire and graze, or in other words,
• 26:53
Speaker 4: that you at once and without delay, but take yourself
• 26:56
Speaker 4: to the farm or the devil, or any other place
• 26:59
Speaker 4: where you are in your element and won't be in
• 27:00
  Speaker 4: the way.
• 27:02
Speaker 2: Oh, yes, I understand that.
• 27:05
Speaker 4: Very well. Then the sooner you create a scarcity of
• 27:08
Speaker 4: such animals in this market, the better. Now, my dear.
• 27:14
Speaker 1: Rose puts his arm round her waist again.
• 27:17
Speaker 4: Are you gone, Ox?
• 27:19
  Speaker 5: No?
• 27:21
  Speaker 4: Are you going?
• 27:23
  Speaker 2: By no means?
• 27:26
Speaker 4: This insolence is not to be born.
• 27:29
Speaker 11: Oh, pray, don't hurt him. Pray don't go away, stupid creature.
• 27:32
Speaker 11: If you don't want to be ruined.
• 27:33
Speaker 2: That's just the very advice I would give you, Rose.
• 27:37
Speaker 2: Do you go away if you don't want to be ruined.
• 27:40
Speaker 2: As for me, this is a public place, and here
• 27:44
Speaker 2: I'll remain just as long as I think proper.
• 27:48
Speaker 1: Flam quitting Rose and advancing towards him, You will.
• 27:52
Speaker 11: I will, Oh, dear dear, I knew he'd be murdered
• 27:56
Speaker 11: all along. I was quite certain of it.
• 27:58
Speaker 2: Now, frown and sca, it won't do it only makes
• 28:02
Speaker 2: me smile. And when you talk of insolence and put
• 28:06
Speaker 2: my blood up, I tell you at once that I
• 28:09
Speaker 2: am not to be bullied. Bullied Hi bullied was the
• 28:16
Speaker 2: word bullied by a coward. If you like that better.
• 28:21
Speaker 1: Coward seizes his gun by the barrel and aims a
• 28:24
Speaker 1: blow at him with the butt end. Edmunds rushes forward
• 28:28
Speaker 1: and strikes it up with his stick.
• 28:30
Speaker 7: Hold your hands, sir, hold your hand or our fell
• 28:33
Speaker 7: you to the ground. Maddox, leave this place directly, take
• 28:37
Speaker 7: the opposite path, and I'll follow you.
• 28:39
  Speaker 1: Exit Maddox.
• 28:40
Speaker 7: As for you, sir, who, by the way of vindicating
• 28:43
Speaker 7: yourself from the charge of cowardice, raise your gun against
• 28:45
Speaker 7: an unarmed man. Tell your protector the squire from me
• 28:49
Speaker 7: that he and his companions might content themselves with turning
• 28:52
Speaker 7: the heads of our farmer's daughters and endeavoring to corrupt
• 28:55
Speaker 7: their hearts without wantonly insulting the men they have most injured.
• 29:00
Speaker 7: There'll be a lesson to you, sir. Although you were armed,
• 29:02
Speaker 7: you would have had the worst of a scuffle, and
• 29:04
Speaker 7: you may not have the benefit of a third person's
• 29:06
Speaker 7: interference at so critical a moment. Another time, remember this
• 29:11
Speaker 7: warning sir, and benefit by it exit.
• 29:15
  Speaker 1: Flam Aside.
• 29:17
Speaker 4: If Norton does not take a dear revenge for this insult,
• 29:20
Speaker 4: I have lost my influence with him, bully coward. They
• 29:24
  Speaker 4: shall rue it.
• 29:26
Speaker 1: Rose with her apron to her eyes.
• 29:28
Speaker 11: Oh, mister Flam, I can't bear to think that you
• 29:30
Speaker 11: should have suffered all this.
• 29:31
Speaker 1: On my account, flam aside.
• 29:34
Speaker 4: On her account, her little vanity to her suffered. Why,
• 29:41
Speaker 4: my dear, it was the drollest and most humorous affair
• 29:45
Speaker 4: that ever happened. Here stand I the honorable Sparkan's Flam,
• 29:50
Speaker 4: on this second day of September one thousand, seven hundred
• 29:53
Speaker 4: and twenty nine, and positively and solemnly declare that all
• 29:57
Speaker 4: the coffee houses, playhouses, pharaoh tables, brag tables, assemblies, drums
• 30:02
Speaker 4: and routs of a whole season put together could not
• 30:05
Speaker 4: furnish such a splendid piece of exquisite rollery. Not the
• 30:09
Speaker 4: idea is admirable. My affecting to quarrel with the plowman
• 30:13
Speaker 4: and submitting to be lectured by another caterpillar whom I
• 30:17
Speaker 4: suffer to burst into a butterfly importance.
• 30:20
Speaker 11: Then you were not really quarreling.
• 30:22
Speaker 4: Bless you know, I was only acting.
• 30:25
Speaker 11: Lor well, you do act to be sure.
• 30:28
Speaker 4: Come, let us retire into the house, or after this joke,
• 30:32
Speaker 4: we shall be the gaze of all the animated potatoes
• 30:35
Speaker 4: that are planted in this hole of a village. Why
• 30:38
Speaker 4: do you hesitate, damask.
• 30:40
Speaker 11: Why I have just been thinking that you go to
• 30:43
Speaker 11: all these coffee houses and playhouses and fairs and brags
• 30:46
Speaker 11: and keep playing drums and grabbing people about, and you'll
• 30:48
Speaker 11: forget me when you go back to London.
• 30:51
Speaker 1: Flam aside more than probable to her.
• 30:55
Speaker 4: Never fear, you will be generally known as Rose the Lovely,
• 31:00
Speaker 4: and I shall be universally denominated Flam, the constant.
• 31:04
Speaker 1: Duet Rose and Sparkan's Flam tis true.
• 31:08
Speaker 4: I'm caressed by the witty, the envy of all the
• 31:11
Speaker 4: fine bows, the pet of the court and the city.
• 31:14
Speaker 4: But still I'm the lover of Rose country sweetheart.
• 31:19
Speaker 11: So how I despise, and oh how delighted I am
• 31:23
Speaker 11: to think that I shine in the eyes of the
• 31:25
Speaker 11: elegant sweet mister Flam.
• 31:28
Speaker 1: Allow me offer us to kiss her.
• 31:31
Speaker 11: Pray, don't be so bold, sir, kisses her?
• 31:34
Speaker 4: What sweets on that honeyed lip?
• 31:36
Speaker 11: Hang your presumption I know I should scold sir, but
• 31:40
Speaker 11: I really can't scold mister Flam.
• 31:43
Speaker 4: Then let us be happy together, content with the world
• 31:45
Speaker 4: as it goes, an unchangeable couple forever mister Flamm and
• 31:50
Speaker 4: his beautiful Rose excellant.
• 31:54
Speaker 1: Scene three, the farmer's kitchen, a table and chairs. Enter
• 31:58
Speaker 1: Old Benson and Martin well Stokes.
• 32:02
Speaker 5: Now you have the opportunity you have desired, and we
• 32:05
Speaker 5: are alone, and I am ready to listen to the
• 32:08
Speaker 5: information which you wish to communicate to my private ear.
• 32:13
Speaker 6: Exactly you said information.
• 32:15
Speaker 5: I think you said information?
• 32:18
Speaker 6: Or have I forgotten just so exactly I said information.
• 32:22
Speaker 6: I did say information. Why should I deny it?
• 32:25
Speaker 5: I see no necessity for your doing so? Certainly, pray go.
• 32:29
Speaker 6: On, Why you see, my dear mister Benson. The fact is,
• 32:33
Speaker 6: won't you be seated? Pray? Sit down?
• 32:36
Speaker 1: Brings forward two chairs.
• 32:38
  Speaker 4: They sit there.
• 32:39
Speaker 6: Now, let me see where was I.
• 32:42
Speaker 5: You were going to begin? I think, oh.
• 32:45
  Speaker 6: Ah, so I was. I hadn't begun? Had I?
• 32:48
Speaker 5: No? No? Pray begin again?
• 32:50
Speaker 6: If you add, well, then what I've got to say
• 32:54
Speaker 6: is not so much information as a kind of advice
• 32:57
Speaker 6: or suggestion or hint or something of that kind. And
• 33:00
  Speaker 6: it relates to.
• 33:02
Speaker 1: Eh, looking very mysterious. Whoa, yes, nodding.
• 33:09
Speaker 6: Don't you think there's something wrong there?
• 33:12
  Speaker 5: Where?
• 33:13
  Speaker 6: In that quarter?
• 33:15
Speaker 5: In what quarter? Speak more plainly, sir.
• 33:19
Speaker 6: You know what a friendly feeling I entertain to your family.
• 33:23
Speaker 6: You know what a very particular friend of mine you are.
• 33:26
Speaker 6: You know how anxious I am always to prevent anything
• 33:28
Speaker 6: going wrong? Well, yes, I say, you're very sensible of it.
• 33:33
Speaker 6: But I'll take it for granted. You needn't bounce and
• 33:35
Speaker 6: fizz about in that way because it makes one nervous,
• 33:39
Speaker 6: don't you think now? Don't you think that ill natured
• 33:42
Speaker 6: people may say, don't be angry? You know, because if
• 33:45
  Speaker 6: I wasn't a very particular friend of the family, I
• 33:47
Speaker 6: wouldn't mention the subject on any account. Don't you think
• 33:51
Speaker 6: that ill natured people may say there's something wrong in
• 33:54
Speaker 6: the frequency of the squire's visits?
• 33:56
  Speaker 4: Here?
• 33:57
Speaker 1: Starting up furiously, walk Martin aside.
• 34:01
Speaker 6: Here he goes again.
• 34:03
Speaker 5: Who dares suspect my child?
• 34:06
  Speaker 7: Ah?
• 34:07
Speaker 6: To be sure, that's exactly what I say? Who dares damn?
• 34:11
Speaker 6: I should like to see them?
• 34:12
  Speaker 4: Is it you?
• 34:14
Speaker 6: I bless you? No, not for the world I come.
• 34:17
Speaker 6: That's a good one. I always say what other people say,
• 34:20
Speaker 6: you know, that's all?
• 34:22
Speaker 5: And what are these tales that I do? Busy fools
• 34:25
Speaker 5: pray of with delight among themselves, caring not whose ears
• 34:29
Speaker 5: the reach, so long as they are kept from the
• 34:31
Speaker 5: old man, whose blindness, the blindness of a fond and
• 34:35
Speaker 5: doting father is subject for their rude and brutal jeering.
• 34:41
Speaker 6: What are they, Dear me, mister Benson, you keep me
• 34:44
Speaker 6: in a state of perpetual excitement.
• 34:46
Speaker 5: Tell me, without equivocation, what do they say?
• 34:51
Speaker 6: Why they say? They think it not exactly wrong? Perhaps,
• 34:55
Speaker 6: don't fly out now, But among those remarkable coincidences which
• 34:58
Speaker 6: do occur sometimes, that whenever you will go out of
• 35:01
Speaker 6: your house, the Squire and his friend should come into it,
• 35:04
Speaker 6: that Miss Lucy and Miss Rose, in the long walks
• 35:07
Speaker 6: they take every day, should be met and walked home
• 35:09
Speaker 6: with by the same gentleman. That long after you have
• 35:12
Speaker 6: gone to bed at night, the Squire and mister Sparkin's
• 35:15
Speaker 6: flam should still be seen hovering about the lane and meadow,
• 35:18
Speaker 6: And that one of the lattice windows should always be
• 35:21
Speaker 6: open at that hour. This is all, yes, yes, that's all.
• 35:26
Speaker 5: Nothing beside, eh, nothing beside.
• 35:31
Speaker 6: Why there is something else. But I know you'll begin
• 35:34
Speaker 6: to bounce about again if I.
• 35:35
Speaker 5: Tell you no, No, let me hear it all.
• 35:39
Speaker 6: Why then they do say that the Squire has been
• 35:41
Speaker 6: heard to post that he has practiced on Lucy's mind,
• 35:44
Speaker 6: that when he bid her, she would leave her father
• 35:46
Speaker 6: and home and follow him over the world.
• 35:49
Speaker 5: They lie. Her breast is pure and innocent, her soul
• 35:54
Speaker 5: is free from guilt, her mind from blemish. They lie.
• 35:59
Speaker 5: I'll not believe it. Are they mad? Do they think
• 36:04
Speaker 5: I stand tamely by and look upon my child's disgrace? Heaven?
• 36:10
Speaker 5: Do they know of what a father's are is made?
• 36:13
Speaker 6: My dear mister Benson, if you.
• 36:15
Speaker 5: This coarse and brutal boast shall be.
• 36:18
Speaker 6: Disowned going Martin stops him, My dear mister Benson, you
• 36:23
Speaker 6: know it may not have been made after all, My dear.
• 36:25
  Speaker 1: Sir Benson, struggling.
• 36:28
Speaker 5: Unand me, Martin made or made not? It has gone abroad,
• 36:32
Speaker 5: fixing an infamous notoriety on me and mine all ere
• 36:37
Speaker 5: it's truth or falsehood from himself?
• 36:40
Speaker 1: Breaks from him and exit Martin.
• 36:43
Speaker 6: Solace, There'll be something decidedly wrong here presently. Hello, here's
• 36:48
Speaker 6: another very particular friend in a fume.
• 36:51
Speaker 1: Enter, young Vincent hastily.
• 36:53
Speaker 6: Ah, my dear fellow, how where is Lucy? I don't
• 36:58
Speaker 6: know unless he has walked out with the square the squire.
• 37:02
Speaker 6: To be sure, she very often walks out with the squire.
• 37:05
Speaker 6: Very pleasant recreation, walking out with a squire, capital custom at.
• 37:09
  Speaker 10: Where's my father?
• 37:11
Speaker 6: Why? Upon my word, I am unable to satisfy your
• 37:14
Speaker 6: curiosity in that particular either. All I know of him
• 37:18
Speaker 6: is that he whisked out of this room in a
• 37:20
Speaker 6: rather boisterous and turbulent manner for an individual at his
• 37:23
Speaker 6: time of life, some few seconds before you whisked in.
• 37:26
Speaker 6: But what's the matter? You seem excited? Nothing wrong is there.
• 37:31
  Speaker 1: Young Vinson? Aside?
• 37:33
Speaker 10: This treatment of Edmunds and Lucy's altered behavior to him
• 37:36
Speaker 10: confirms my worst fear. Where is mister Norton?
• 37:39
  Speaker 1: Martin calling off?
• 37:41
Speaker 6: Ah, to be sure? Where is mister Norton?
• 37:45
Speaker 1: Enter, Squire, mister Norton is here?
• 37:48
Speaker 3: Who wishes to see him?
• 37:50
Speaker 6: To be sure, sir, mister Norton is here? Who wishes
• 37:53
Speaker 6: to see him? I do I don't, old fellow, goodbye,
• 37:58
Speaker 6: mister Norton, Good evening. Aside, there'll be something wrong here
• 38:02
  Speaker 6: in a minute.
• 38:04
Speaker 10: Exit, Well, young man, if you contemplate treachery here, mister Norton,
• 38:10
Speaker 10: look to yourself. My father is an old man. The
• 38:13
Speaker 10: chief prop of his declining years is his child, my sister.
• 38:17
Speaker 10: For your actions here, sir, you shall render a dear.
• 38:20
Speaker 3: Account to me, to you peasant.
• 38:24
Speaker 10: To me, sir, one other scene like that enacted by
• 38:27
Speaker 10: your creature at your commands tonight, may terminate more seriously
• 38:31
Speaker 10: to him for your behavior here, you are responsible to.
• 38:34
Speaker 3: Me, indeed, anything more.
• 38:37
Speaker 10: Sir, simply this, after injuring the old man beyond reputation
• 38:42
Speaker 10: and embittering the last moments of his life. As you
• 38:45
Speaker 10: may possibly attempt to shield yourself under the paltry excuse
• 38:48
Speaker 10: that as a gentleman you cannot descend to take the
• 38:51
Speaker 10: consequences from my hands, you shall take them from me, sir.
• 38:56
Speaker 10: If I strike you to the earth first.
• 38:58
Speaker 3: Exit, fiery and valorus. Indeed, as the suspicions of the
• 39:04
Speaker 3: family are aroused, no time is to be lost. The
• 39:07
Speaker 3: girl must be carried off to night, if possible, with
• 39:10
Speaker 3: Flam's assistance and management, she may be speedily removed from
• 39:13
Speaker 3: within the reach of these rustic sparks in my cooler moments.
• 39:18
Speaker 3: The reflections of the misery I may inflict upon the
• 39:21
Speaker 3: old man makes my conduct appear base and dishonorable, even
• 39:25
Speaker 3: to myself Pshaw. Hundreds have done the same thing before me,
• 39:30
Speaker 3: who have been lauded and blazoned forth as men of honor.
• 39:34
Speaker 3: Honor in such cases an idle tale a byword honor.
• 39:39
Speaker 3: There is much to be gleaned from old tales, and
• 39:43
Speaker 3: the legend of the Child and the old Man speaks,
• 39:45
  Speaker 3: but too.
• 39:46
Speaker 1: Truly, song, Squire Norton.
• 39:50
Speaker 3: The child and the old man set alone in the quiet,
• 39:53
Speaker 3: peaceful shade of the old green boughs that had richly
• 39:58
Speaker 3: grown in the deep thick forest blade. It was a
• 40:01
Speaker 3: soft and pleasant sound, that rustling of the oak, and
• 40:05
Speaker 3: the gentle breeze played lightly round. And thus the fair
• 40:09
Speaker 3: boy spoke, dear Father, what can honor be of which
• 40:14
  Speaker 3: I hear?
• 40:14
  Speaker 7: Men?
• 40:14
Speaker 3: Rave, fields, sell and cloister, land and sea, the tempest
• 40:19
Speaker 3: and the grave. It lives in all, tis sought, in
• 40:22
Speaker 3: each tis never heard nor seen. Now tell me, Father,
• 40:26
Speaker 3: I beseech, what can this honor mean? It is a name,
• 40:31
Speaker 3: a name, my child. It lived in other days, when
• 40:35
Speaker 3: men were rude, their passions wild, their sport thick battle phrase,
• 40:40
Speaker 3: when in armor bright, the warrior bold knelt to his
• 40:43
Speaker 3: lady's eyes. Beneath the avvy pavement old that warrior's dust
• 40:48
Speaker 3: now lies. The ironed hearts of that old day have
• 40:52
Speaker 3: moldered in the grave, and chivalry has passed away. With
• 40:56
Speaker 3: knights so true and brave. The honor which to them
• 41:00
Speaker 3: was life, throbs in no bosom. Now it only gilds
• 41:04
Speaker 3: the gambler's strife or death's the worthless vow enter Lucy, Lucy,
• 41:12
  Speaker 3: Dear Lucy.
• 41:14
Speaker 8: Let me entreat you not to stay here, Sir, you
• 41:17
Speaker 8: will be exposed to nothing but insult and attack. Edmunds
• 41:21
Speaker 8: and my brother have both returned, irritated at something that
• 41:24
Speaker 8: has passed. With my cousin Rose for my sake. For
• 41:28
Speaker 8: my sake, mister Norton, spare me the pain of witnessing
• 41:32
Speaker 8: what will ensue if they find you here. You little
• 41:35
Speaker 8: know what I have borne already.
• 41:38
Speaker 3: For your sake, Lucy, I would do much, But why
• 41:41
Speaker 3: should I leave you to encounter the passion and ill
• 41:44
Speaker 3: will from which you would have me fly?
• 41:47
Speaker 8: Oh I can bear it, sir, I deserve it, but
• 41:49
Speaker 8: too well deserve it.
• 41:52
Speaker 3: You do yourself an injustice, Lucy. No, Rather, let me
• 41:56
Speaker 3: remove you from a house where you will suffer nothing
• 41:59
Speaker 3: but persecution, and confer upon you a title which the
• 42:03
Speaker 3: proudest lady in the land might wear. Here here, on
• 42:07
  Speaker 3: my knees.
• 42:09
Speaker 1: Enter flam Squire, rising, Flam here, flam Aside.
• 42:16
Speaker 4: Upon my word. I thought we'd been getting on pretty
• 42:19
Speaker 4: well in the open air. But they're beating us hollow
• 42:22
Speaker 4: here under cover, Lucy.
• 42:24
Speaker 3: But one word, and I understand your decision.
• 42:27
Speaker 8: I I cannot subdue the feelings of uneasiness and distrust
• 42:31
Speaker 8: which the great difference between your honor's rank and mine
• 42:35
Speaker 8: awakens in my mind.
• 42:37
Speaker 3: Difference Hundreds of such cases happen every day. Indeed, oh
• 42:43
Speaker 3: tis a matter of general notoriety, isn't it, Flam.
• 42:47
Speaker 4: No doubt of it. Aside, don't exactly know yet what
• 42:51
Speaker 4: they are talking about.
• 42:52
Speaker 3: Though our relation of my own. A man of exalted
• 42:56
Speaker 3: rank courted a girl far his inferior in station, but
• 42:59
Speaker 3: only beneath him in that respect. In all others she
• 43:03
Speaker 3: was on a footing of equality with himself, if not
• 43:05
  Speaker 3: far above him.
• 43:07
Speaker 1: And were they married, flam Aside.
• 43:10
Speaker 4: Rather important circumstance in the case, I do remember that.
• 43:15
Speaker 3: They were after a time when the resentment of his
• 43:19
Speaker 3: friends occasioned by him forming such an attachment, had subsided,
• 43:23
Speaker 3: and he was able to acknowledge her without involving the
• 43:26
  Speaker 3: ruin of both.
• 43:28
Speaker 8: They were married privately at first.
• 43:30
Speaker 4: Then flam aside, I must put in a word here.
• 43:34
Speaker 4: Oh yes, it was all comfortably arranged to everybody's satisfaction,
• 43:38
  Speaker 4: wasn't it, Noughton?
• 43:40
Speaker 3: Certainly? And a happy couple they were, weren't they.
• 43:43
Speaker 4: Flam, happiest of the happy, as happy as a side
• 43:48
Speaker 4: a separation could make them.
• 43:50
Speaker 3: Hundreds of great people have formed similar attachments, haven't they.
• 43:54
Speaker 4: Flam Undoubtedly there was the right Honorable Augustus Frederick Charleston
• 44:00
Speaker 4: Thompson Camarado and the German Baron Hichtenschloopen Luberhausen, and they
• 44:05
Speaker 4: were both married aside to somebody else first, not to
• 44:10
Speaker 4: mention Damask and Die, who were models of constancy. By
• 44:14
Speaker 4: the bye, I have lost sight of her, and I
• 44:17
  Speaker 4: am interrupting.
• 44:17
Speaker 1: You aside to Squire as he goes out.
• 44:20
Speaker 4: I came to tell you that she is ripe for
• 44:23
Speaker 4: an elopement if you urge her strongly. Edmunds has been
• 44:27
Speaker 4: reproaching her to my knowledge, she'll consent while her passion
• 44:30
  Speaker 4: lasts exit.
• 44:33
Speaker 3: Lucy, I wait your answer. One word from you, and
• 44:37
Speaker 3: a few hours will place you far beyond the reach
• 44:39
Speaker 3: of those who would fetter your choice and control your inclinations.
• 44:44
Speaker 3: You hesitate, Come decide the Squire's lady or the wife
• 44:49
  Speaker 3: of Edmunds.
• 44:50
Speaker 1: Duet Lucy and Squire Norton.
• 44:53
Speaker 3: In rich and lofty station shine before his jealous eyes,
• 44:58
Speaker 3: in golden splendor, Lady min This peasant youth despise.
• 45:03
Speaker 1: Lucy apart, the Squire regarding her attentively.
• 45:07
Speaker 8: Oh, it would be revenge. Indeed, with scorn his glance
• 45:11
Speaker 8: to meet I I his humble pleading heed, I'd spurn
• 45:17
Speaker 8: him from my feet.
• 45:18
Speaker 3: With love and rage her bosom's torn and rash.
• 45:22
Speaker 8: The choice will be with love and rage, my bosom's
• 45:25
Speaker 8: torn and rash. The choice will be.
• 45:28
Speaker 3: From hence she quickly must be borne her home, her
• 45:32
  Speaker 3: home shall flee.
• 45:34
Speaker 8: Oh long shall I have cast to mourn my home?
• 45:37
Speaker 8: My home? For thee enter.
• 45:40
Speaker 12: Old Benson, What do I see?
• 45:44
Speaker 3: The Squire and Lucy listen. A chase and four fleet horses,
• 45:50
Speaker 3: under the direction of a trusty friend of mine, will
• 45:53
Speaker 3: be in waiting on the high road at the corner
• 45:55
Speaker 3: of the Elm Tree Avenue. Tonight at ten o'clock they
• 45:58
Speaker 3: shall bear you whither we can be safe and in
• 46:01
Speaker 3: secret by the first light of mourning.
• 46:03
Speaker 8: His cruel, harshness, it would be revenge, indeed, But my father,
• 46:08
Speaker 8: my poor old father.
• 46:11
Speaker 3: Your father is prejudiced in Edmund's favor, and so long
• 46:14
Speaker 3: as he thinks there is any chance of your being his,
• 46:17
Speaker 3: he will oppose your holy communication with me. Situated as
• 46:22
Speaker 3: you are now, you only stand in the way of
• 46:24
Speaker 3: his wealth and advancement. Once fly with me, and in
• 46:28
Speaker 3: four and twenty hours you will be his pride, his boast,
• 46:31
  Speaker 3: his support.
• 46:33
Speaker 1: Old Benson coming forward, it.
• 46:35
Speaker 5: Is a lie, a base lie.
• 46:39
Speaker 1: Lucy shrieks and throws herself at his feet.
• 46:42
Speaker 5: My pride, my boast. She would be my disgrace, my shame,
• 46:49
Speaker 5: an out cast from her father's roof and from the world. Support.
• 46:55
Speaker 5: Support me with the gold coin from her infamy and guilt.
• 46:59
Speaker 5: Hev help me have I cherished here for this, Lucy.
• 47:04
Speaker 1: Clinging to him, Father, dear dear father.
• 47:08
Speaker 3: Hear me speak, Benson, be calm.
• 47:11
Speaker 5: Come, Do you know that from infancy I have almost
• 47:16
Speaker 5: worshiped her, fancying that I saw in her young mind
• 47:20
Speaker 5: the virtues of a mother to whom the anguish of
• 47:23
Speaker 5: this one hour would have been worse than death. Come,
• 47:29
Speaker 5: do you know that I have a heart and soul
• 47:32
Speaker 5: within me? Or do you believe that because I am
• 47:35
Speaker 5: of lower station, I am a being of different order
• 47:39
Speaker 5: from yourself, and that nature has denied me thought and feeling? Come, man,
• 47:46
Speaker 5: do you know that I am this girl's father?
• 47:49
Speaker 3: Benson? If you will not hear me, at least, do not,
• 47:52
Speaker 3: by hastily exposing this matter, deprive me of the inclination
• 47:56
Speaker 3: of making you some reparation.
• 47:58
Speaker 5: Reparation You need to be thankful, sir, for the grass
• 48:03
Speaker 5: she has upon my arm. Money. If she were dying
• 48:07
Speaker 5: for want, and the smallest coin from you could restore
• 48:11
Speaker 5: it to life and health. Sooner than she should take
• 48:14
Speaker 5: it from your hand, I would cast her from a
• 48:17
Speaker 5: sick bed to perish on the roadside.
• 48:20
Speaker 3: Benson, a word, do not?
• 48:23
Speaker 5: I caution you do not talk to me, sir. I
• 48:27
Speaker 5: am an old man, but I do not know what
• 48:30
Speaker 5: passion may make me do.
• 48:32
Speaker 3: These are high words. Benson.
• 48:35
Speaker 5: A farmer, Yes, sir, a farmer. One of the men
• 48:39
Speaker 5: on whom you and such as you depend for the
• 48:43
Speaker 5: money they squander in profligacy and idleness. A farmer, sir,
• 48:49
Speaker 5: I care not for your long pedigree of ancestors. My
• 48:53
Speaker 5: forefathers made them all here, neighbors, friends.
• 48:58
Speaker 1: Rose Maddox, Stoekes, villagers, et cetera. Crowd on stage.
• 49:03
Speaker 5: Hear this, hear this, your landlord, a high born gentleman,
• 49:09
Speaker 5: injuring the houses of your humble farmers and tempting their
• 49:13
  Speaker 5: daughters to destruction.
• 49:15
Speaker 1: Enter young Benson and George Edmonds, what's that idea? Rushing
• 49:19
Speaker 1: towards the squire's doakes interposes.
• 49:22
Speaker 6: Hello, Hello, take hold of the other one, John.
• 49:26
Speaker 1: Maddix, and he removed them to opposite sides of the stage.
• 49:30
Speaker 6: Hold him tight, John, hold him tight. Stand still, there's
• 49:33
Speaker 6: a good fellow. Keep back. Squire knew there'd be something wrong.
• 49:36
Speaker 6: Ready to come in at the nick of time.
• 49:38
Speaker 1: Capital Custom Flamm enters and stands next to the squire.
• 49:43
Speaker 3: Exposed baited, Benson, are you mad? Within the last few hours,
• 49:49
Speaker 3: my friend here has been attacked and insulted on the
• 49:51
Speaker 3: very land you hauled by a person in your employ
• 49:54
Speaker 3: And young Edmunds there, I too have been threatened and
• 49:58
Speaker 3: insulted in the presence of my tenor tree and workmen.
• 50:01
Speaker 3: Take care you do not drive me to extremities. Remember
• 50:05
Speaker 3: the lease of this farm for seventy years, which your
• 50:08
Speaker 3: father took of mine, expires tomorrow, and that I have
• 50:12
Speaker 3: the power to refuse its renewal. Again, I ask you,
• 50:17
  Speaker 3: are you mad?
• 50:18
Speaker 5: Quit my house, villain, villain, quit my house?
• 50:23
Speaker 3: Then this farm is mine, and you and yours shall
• 50:26
Speaker 3: depart from under its roof before the sun has set tomorrow.
• 50:30
Speaker 1: Benson sinks into a chair and center and covers his
• 50:33
Speaker 1: face with his hands. Says Ted and Corus, Lucy Rose, Edmunds,
• 50:40
Speaker 1: Squire Norton, flam Young Vinson and Corus.
• 50:45
Speaker 10: Turn him from his farm for his home. You will
• 50:47
Speaker 10: cast the old man who has tilled it for years.
• 50:50
Speaker 10: Every tree, every flower is linked with the past. And
• 50:53
Speaker 10: a friend of his childhood appears. Turn him from the
• 50:56
Speaker 10: farm or its grassy hillsides a gay boy he wants
• 51:00
Speaker 10: love to range. His boyhood is fled, and his dear
• 51:03
Speaker 10: friends are dead. That these meadows have never known change.
• 51:07
Speaker 7: Oh presser, hear me on my knees.
• 51:09
Speaker 3: I implore I command it, and you will obey.
• 51:14
Speaker 11: Rise dear lucy, rise. You shall not kneel before the
• 51:17
Speaker 11: tyrant who drives us away.
• 51:18
Speaker 3: Your sorrows are useless, your prayers are in vain. I
• 51:22
Speaker 3: command it, and you will be gone. I'll hear no more.
• 51:26
Speaker 7: No, they shall not beg again of a man whom
• 51:28
Speaker 7: I view with deep scorn.
• 51:30
  Speaker 4: Do not yield.
• 51:33
Speaker 8: Leave the farm, Leave the farm, Leave the farm, leave
• 51:38
  Speaker 8: the farm.
• 51:39
Speaker 7: Your power I despise.
• 51:41
Speaker 3: And your threats, boy, I disregard to.
• 51:44
  Speaker 4: Do not yield.
• 51:46
Speaker 8: Leave the farm, Leave the farm, Leave the farm.
• 51:51
Speaker 11: Leave the farm. If he leaves it, he dies.
• 51:54
Speaker 7: This base, proud man, you shall.
• 51:57
Speaker 10: Rue turn him from the farm from his home. You
• 52:00
Speaker 10: will cast the old man who has tilled it for years.
• 52:02
Speaker 10: Every tree, every flower is linked with the past, and
• 52:05
Speaker 10: a friend of his childhood appears.
• 52:07
Speaker 3: Yes, Yes, leave the farm from his home. I will
• 52:11
Speaker 3: cast the old man who has killed it for years.
• 52:14
Speaker 3: Though each tree and flower is linked with the past,
• 52:17
Speaker 3: and a friend of his childhood appears.
• 52:22
Speaker 4: The flowers linked in the past, and a friend of
• 52:28
  Speaker 4: his child.
• 52:31
Speaker 1: And I'll act one, Act two, Scene one, an apartment
• 52:38
Speaker 1: in the hall, a breakfast table with urn and tea service,
• 52:43
Speaker 1: a livery servant arranging it, flam in a morning gown
• 52:48
Speaker 1: and slippers, reclining on a sofa.
• 52:51
Speaker 4: Is the Squire out of bed yet?
• 52:54
Speaker 9: Yes, sir, he will be down directly.

Speaker 4: And he letters from London one for.
• 52:59
Speaker 9: Your honor, that the man brought over from the market
• 53:02
  Speaker 9: town this morning.
• 53:03
Speaker 1: Give it me, blockhead servant gives it and exits.
• 53:08
Speaker 4: Never like the look of a great official folded letter
• 53:11
Speaker 4: with a large seal. It's always an unpleasant one. Talk
• 53:16
Speaker 4: of discovering a man's character from his handwriting. I'll back
• 53:20
Speaker 4: myself against any odds to form a very close guess
• 53:22
Speaker 4: at the contents of a letter from the form into
• 53:24
Speaker 4: which it is folded. This, now, I should say, is
• 53:28
Speaker 4: a decidedly hostile fold. Let's see King's Bench Walk, September one,
• 53:35
Speaker 4: seventeen twenty nine. Sir, I am instructed by my client,
• 53:38
Speaker 4: mister Edward Montague, to apply to you the old story
• 53:43
Speaker 4: for the immediate payment. I suppose, what's this to apply
• 53:48
Speaker 4: to you for the instant restitution of the sum of
• 53:50
Speaker 4: two hundred and fifty pounds his son lost to you
• 53:53
Speaker 4: at play, and to acquaint you that unless it is
• 53:56
Speaker 4: immediately forwarded to my office as above, the circumstance if
• 54:00
Speaker 4: the transaction will be made known, and the unfair and
• 54:03
Speaker 4: fraudulent means by which you deprived the young man of
• 54:05
Speaker 4: his money publicly advertised. I am, sir, your obedient servant,
• 54:09
Speaker 4: John Ellis devil. Who would believe now that such a
• 54:14
Speaker 4: trifling circumstance is the mere insinuation of a small piece
• 54:17
Speaker 4: of gold into the corner of two dice, would influence
• 54:20
Speaker 4: a man's destiny. What's to be done? If by some
• 54:25
Speaker 4: dexterous stroke I could manage to curry favor with Norton
• 54:29
Speaker 4: and procure some handsome present in return for services rendered
• 54:33
Speaker 4: for work and labor done and performed, as my obedient
• 54:36
Speaker 4: servant John Ellis would say, I might keep my head
• 54:39
Speaker 4: above water. Yet I have it. He shall have a
• 54:44
Speaker 4: joyful surprise. I'll carry this girl off for him, and
• 54:47
Speaker 4: he shall know nothing of the enterprise until it is completed,
• 54:51
Speaker 4: or at least till she is fairly off. I've been
• 54:54
Speaker 4: well rewarded for similar services before, and may securely calculate
• 54:58
Speaker 4: on his gratitude in the present instance.
• 55:01
Speaker 1: He is here puts up the letter enter Squire. Norton Squire,
• 55:07
Speaker 1: seating himself at table.
• 55:09
Speaker 3: Has any application for permission to remain on the farm
• 55:12
Speaker 3: been made from Benson this morning, flam None, I'm very
• 55:16
Speaker 3: sorry for it. Although I admire the old man's independent spirit,
• 55:21
Speaker 3: I am very sorry for it wrong as I know
• 55:24
Speaker 3: I have been. I would rather that the first concession
• 55:27
Speaker 3: came from him concession. The more I reflect upon the
• 55:32
Speaker 3: occurrences of yesterday, flam the more I regret that, under
• 55:36
Speaker 3: the influence of momentary passion and excitement, I should have
• 55:39
Speaker 3: you so uncalled for a threat against my father's oldest tenant.
• 55:44
Speaker 3: It is an act of baseness to which I look
• 55:46
  Speaker 3: back with abhorrence.
• 55:48
Speaker 4: Flam Aside, What weather Cock morality is this?
• 55:52
Speaker 3: It was unnecessary violence, unnecessary?
• 55:56
Speaker 4: Oh, certainly no doubt you could have attained your object
• 56:00
Speaker 4: without it, and can still. There is no occasion to
• 56:03
Speaker 4: punish the old man, nor will I.
• 56:06
Speaker 3: He shall not leave the farm if I myself implore
• 56:09
Speaker 3: and beg him to.
• 56:09
  Speaker 1: Remain enter servant.
• 56:12
Speaker 9: Two young women to speak with your Honor.
• 56:16
Speaker 1: Enter Lucy and Rose. Lucy flam Aside.
• 56:21
Speaker 4: She must be carried off to night, or she certainly
• 56:23
Speaker 4: will save me the trouble, and I shall lose the money.
• 56:26
Speaker 8: Your Honor may be well surprised to see me here
• 56:29
Speaker 8: after the events of yesterday. It has cost me no
• 56:32
Speaker 8: trifling struggle to take this step, but I hope my
• 56:35
Speaker 8: better feelings have at length prevailed and conquered my pride
• 56:39
Speaker 8: and weakness. I wish to speak to your honor with nobody.
• 56:43
Speaker 4: By flam aside nobody by I rather suspect I'm not
• 56:48
Speaker 4: particularly wanted here to them. Pray allow us to retire
• 56:52
Speaker 4: for a few moments. Rose, my dear, well, come along.
• 56:58
Speaker 8: Rose will remain here for that purpose.
• 57:01
Speaker 4: Bless me. That's very odd, as you please, of course,
• 57:04
Speaker 4: but I really think you'll find her very much in
• 57:06
Speaker 4: the way aside acting propriety, So much the better for
• 57:11
Speaker 4: my purpose. A little coyness will enhance the value of
• 57:15
  Speaker 4: the prize.
• 57:16
Speaker 1: Exit phlam, Mister Norton.
• 57:20
Speaker 8: I come here to throw myself upon your honorable feelings
• 57:23
Speaker 8: as a man and as a gentleman. Oh sir, Now
• 57:27
Speaker 8: that my eyes are open to the misery into which
• 57:30
Speaker 8: I have plunged myself by my own ingratitude and treachery,
• 57:34
Speaker 8: do not do not add to it the reflection that
• 57:37
Speaker 8: I have driven my father, in his old age, from
• 57:40
Speaker 8: the house where he was born than in which he
• 57:42
Speaker 8: hoped to have died.
• 57:44
Speaker 3: Be calm, Lucy. Your father shall continue to hold afar
• 57:48
Speaker 3: the least shall be renewed.
• 57:50
Speaker 8: I have more to say to your Honor still, and
• 57:52
Speaker 8: what I have to add may even induce your Honor
• 57:55
Speaker 8: to retract the promise you have just now made me, Lucy,
• 57:59
Speaker 8: what care you mean, oh, sir? Call me coquette, faithless, treacherous, deceitful,
• 58:06
Speaker 8: what you will? I deserve it all, But believe me
• 58:10
Speaker 8: I speak the truth when I make the humiliating avowal.
• 58:14
Speaker 8: A weak, despicable vanity induced me to listen with a
• 58:17
Speaker 8: ready ear to your Honor's addresses, and to cast away
• 58:21
Speaker 8: the best and noblest heart that ever woman won.
• 58:25
Speaker 3: Lucy. Twas but last night you told me that your
• 58:28
Speaker 3: love for Edmonds had vanished into air, and that you
• 58:31
Speaker 3: hated and despised him.
• 58:33
Speaker 8: I know it, Sir too well. He laid bare my
• 58:36
Speaker 8: own guilt and showed me the ruin which impended over me.
• 58:40
Speaker 8: He spoke the truth. Your Honor more than confirmed him.
• 58:44
  Speaker 1: Squire.
• 58:45
Speaker 3: After a pause, even the avowal you have just made,
• 58:49
Speaker 3: unexpected as it is, shall not disturb my resolution. Your
• 58:53
Speaker 3: father shall not leave the.
• 58:55
Speaker 1: Farm, Quartette, Lucy Rose, Squire, nor and afterwards, Young bentson.
• 59:03
Speaker 3: Hear me when I swear that the farm is your
• 59:05
Speaker 3: own through all changes, fortune may make the base charge
• 59:09
Speaker 3: of falsehood. I never have known this promise. I never
• 59:13
  Speaker 3: will break.
• 59:14
Speaker 8: Hear him when he swears that the farm is our
• 59:17
Speaker 8: own through all changes, Fortune may make the base charge
• 59:22
Speaker 8: of falsehood. He never has known this promise. He never
• 59:26
  Speaker 8: will break.
• 59:27
Speaker 1: Enter, young Benson, my sister here, Lucy begone.
• 59:31
Speaker 3: I command to your home. I restore you again.
• 59:35
  Speaker 9: No boon.
• 59:35
Speaker 10: I'll accept from that treacherous hands as the price of
• 59:38
Speaker 10: my sister's their fame.
• 59:40
Speaker 1: To your home, Young Benson, to.
• 59:42
Speaker 10: Lucy hence away, Brother, Dear, I obey, I restore hence away,
• 59:50
  Speaker 10: let us leave.
• 59:52
Speaker 8: He swears it, Dear brother.
• 59:54
Speaker 3: I swear it away. I swear it.
• 59:58
Speaker 10: You swear to deceive.
• 1:00:00
Speaker 3: Hear me when I swear that the farm is your
• 1:00:02
Speaker 3: own through all changes. Fortune may make hear him.
• 1:00:06
Speaker 8: When he swears that the farm is our own through
• 1:00:09
Speaker 8: all changes, Fortune may make.
• 1:00:12
Speaker 10: Hear him swear. Hear him swear that the farm is
• 1:00:14
Speaker 10: our own through all changes, Fortune may.
• 1:00:17
Speaker 3: Make the base charge of falsehood. I never have known
• 1:00:21
Speaker 3: this promise. I never will break the base.
• 1:00:25
Speaker 8: Charge of falsehood. He never has known this promise. He
• 1:00:28
  Speaker 8: never will break.
• 1:00:29
Speaker 10: The base charge of falsehood. He often has known this promise,
• 1:00:33
Speaker 10: he surely will break.
• 1:00:35
Speaker 1: Excellent omnis. Re enter Flam in a walking dress.
• 1:00:40
Speaker 4: The coast is clear at last, what on earth that
• 1:00:44
Speaker 4: conversation could have been with which Rose was wanted and
• 1:00:47
Speaker 4: I was not? I confess my inability to comprehend. But
• 1:00:51
Speaker 4: away with speculation, and now.
• 1:00:53
Speaker 1: To business rings. Enter servant, pen and ink, yes, sir,
• 1:01:00
Speaker 1: Exit servant, Flam solace.
• 1:01:04
Speaker 4: Nearly all the tenantry will be assembled here at the
• 1:01:06
Speaker 4: ball tonight, and if the father of this rustic Dulcinea
• 1:01:10
Speaker 4: is reinstated in his farm, he and his people will
• 1:01:12
Speaker 4: no doubt be among the number. It'll be easy enough
• 1:01:15
Speaker 4: to entice the girl into the garden through the window
• 1:01:18
Speaker 4: opening on the lawn. A chaise can be waiting in
• 1:01:21
Speaker 4: the quiet lane at the side, and some trusty fellow
• 1:01:24
Speaker 4: can slip a hasty note into Norton's hands, informing him
• 1:01:26
Speaker 4: of the flight and naming the place at which he
• 1:01:29
  Speaker 4: can join us.
• 1:01:30
Speaker 1: Re Enter Servant with pin, ink, taper and two sheets
• 1:01:34
Speaker 1: of notepaper. He places them on a table and exit.
• 1:01:39
Speaker 4: I may as well reply to my friend mister John
• 1:01:41
Speaker 4: Ellis's obliging favor now too, by promising that the money
• 1:01:45
Speaker 4: shall be forwarded in the course of three days.
• 1:01:47
Speaker 1: Post takes the letter from his pocket and lays it
• 1:01:51
  Speaker 1: on the table.
• 1:01:52
Speaker 4: Lie you there first for Norton's note. Dear Norton, knowing
• 1:01:58
Speaker 4: your wishes seized the girl I O blame attached to you,
• 1:02:01
Speaker 4: join us as suit as people have dispersed in search
• 1:02:03
Speaker 4: of her in all directions, but the right one fifteen miles.
• 1:02:05
Speaker 1: Off, folds it ready for an envelope, and lays it
• 1:02:09
Speaker 1: to the side of the other letter.
• 1:02:11
Speaker 4: Now for John Ellis, why what does the rascal mean
• 1:02:15
Speaker 4: by bringing but two sheets of paper? No matter, that
• 1:02:19
Speaker 4: affair will keep cool till tomorrow, when I have less
• 1:02:21
Speaker 4: business on my hands and more money in my pockets.
• 1:02:24
Speaker 1: I hope crumples the letter he has just written hastily up,
• 1:02:28
Speaker 1: thrusts it into his pocket, and folds the wrong one
• 1:02:32
Speaker 1: in the envelope. As he is sealing it, Enter Martin,
• 1:02:35
Speaker 1: very cautiously, Martin peeping.
• 1:02:38
Speaker 6: There he is hatching some mysterious and diabolical plot. If
• 1:02:42
Speaker 6: I can only get to the bottom of these dreadful designs,
• 1:02:45
Speaker 6: I shall immortalize myself. What a lucky dog I am
• 1:02:48
Speaker 6: to be such a successful gleaner of news and such
• 1:02:51
Speaker 6: a confidential person into the bargain as to be the
• 1:02:54
Speaker 6: first to hear that he wanted some trustworthy person. All
• 1:02:57
Speaker 6: comes of talking to everybody I meet and drawing out
• 1:03:00
Speaker 6: everything they hear. Capital custom. He don't see me, ahh.
• 1:03:06
Speaker 1: Coughs very loudly, and when Flamm looks around, nods familiarly.
• 1:03:11
Speaker 6: How are you again?
• 1:03:13
Speaker 4: How am I again? Who the devil are you? And
• 1:03:15
Speaker 4: what do you want here?
• 1:03:17
Speaker 6: Hush eh, hush, I'm the man, the man, yes, the
• 1:03:23
Speaker 6: man you asked the ostler at the George to recommend you,
• 1:03:26
Speaker 6: The trustworthy man that knows all the byroads well and
• 1:03:29
Speaker 6: can keep a secret. The man that you wanted to
• 1:03:32
Speaker 6: lend you a hand in a job that hush, hush, Oh,
• 1:03:36
Speaker 6: you're beginning to hush now, are you have?
• 1:03:38
Speaker 4: Did I seen your face before?
• 1:03:40
Speaker 6: To be sure you have? You recollect admiring my manners
• 1:03:43
Speaker 6: at Benson's yesterday. You must remember mister Martin Stokes. You
• 1:03:47
Speaker 6: can't have forgotten him. Not possible.
• 1:03:50
Speaker 4: Flam assigned a friend of Benson a dangerous wrong contra.
• 1:03:55
Speaker 4: Another moment in our conversation might have taken an awkward
• 1:03:58
Speaker 4: turn to him. So you a Stokes, Eh, Benson's friend Stokes.
• 1:04:04
Speaker 6: To be sure, I knew you couldn't have forgotten me,
• 1:04:08
Speaker 6: pleasant Stokes. They call me clever Stokes sometimes, but that's flattery. No,
• 1:04:13
Speaker 6: surely yes, upon my life it is. Can't bear flattery.
• 1:04:18
Speaker 6: Don't like it at all.
• 1:04:20
  Speaker 4: Well, mister Stokes.
• 1:04:22
Speaker 12: Martin Aside, Now for the secret.
• 1:04:25
Speaker 4: I'm very sorry you've had the trouble of coming up here,
• 1:04:27
Speaker 4: mister Stokes, because I have changed my plan and shall
• 1:04:30
Speaker 4: not require your valuable services.
• 1:04:33
Speaker 1: Goes up to the table. Martin Aside, something wrong here?
• 1:04:38
Speaker 6: Try him again? You're sure you don't want me?
• 1:04:41
  Speaker 4: Quite?
• 1:04:43
Speaker 6: That's unlucky, because as I have quarreled with Benson, quarreled
• 1:04:47
Speaker 6: with Benson, What didn't you know that?
• 1:04:51
Speaker 4: Never heard of it? Now I think of it, mister Stokes,
• 1:04:54
Speaker 4: I shall want your assistance. Praise it down, mister Stokes.
• 1:04:58
  Speaker 6: With pleasure.
• 1:05:00
  Speaker 1: They sit.
• 1:05:01
Speaker 6: I say, I thought you wanted me.
• 1:05:04
  Speaker 4: Ah, you're a sharp fellow.
• 1:05:06
Speaker 6: You don't mean that I do.
• 1:05:09
Speaker 1: Indeed, martin Aside, you would if you knew all flam
• 1:05:15
Speaker 1: Aside conceited hound. Martin Aside poor devil, mister Stokes, I
• 1:05:22
Speaker 1: needn't impress upon a gentleman of your intelligence the necessity
• 1:05:25
Speaker 1: of secrecy in this matter.
• 1:05:27
Speaker 6: Of course. Not see y'all say nothing capital custom aside,
• 1:05:32
  Speaker 6: not mine, though.
• 1:05:33
Speaker 4: Go on, you wouldn't mind playing bent in a trick,
• 1:05:37
  Speaker 4: just a harmless.
• 1:05:38
Speaker 6: Trick, certainly not. Go on.
• 1:05:41
Speaker 4: I'll trust you so you may go on a chosen
• 1:05:46
Speaker 4: fall be waiting tonight at ten o'clock, precisely at the
• 1:05:48
Speaker 4: little gate that opens from the garden into the lane.
• 1:05:52
Speaker 6: No will it, though?
• 1:05:54
Speaker 4: Go on, don't interrupt me, Stokes into that chase. You
• 1:05:58
Speaker 4: must assist me in forcing as quickly as possible and
• 1:06:01
  Speaker 4: without noise.
• 1:06:02
  Speaker 6: Yes, go on?
• 1:06:04
Speaker 4: Whom do you think don't know? Can't you guess whom?
• 1:06:09
  Speaker 11: No?
• 1:06:10
  Speaker 4: Try?
• 1:06:11
  Speaker 2: Eh?
• 1:06:11
Speaker 6: What miss hush hush?
• 1:06:14
Speaker 4: You understand me? I see, not another word, not another syllable.
• 1:06:19
Speaker 6: But do you really mean to run away.
• 1:06:21
Speaker 1: With stopping his mouth?
• 1:06:23
  Speaker 4: You understand me?
• 1:06:24
Speaker 1: That's quite sufficient, Martin aside.
• 1:06:27
Speaker 6: He's going to run away with Rose. Why if I
• 1:06:30
Speaker 6: hadn't found this out, John Mannox, one of my most
• 1:06:33
Speaker 6: particular friends, would have gone stark, staring, raving, mad with
• 1:06:36
Speaker 6: grief to him. But what will become of miss Lucy
• 1:06:40
Speaker 6: when she has lost Rose.
• 1:06:42
Speaker 4: No matter, we cannot take them both without the certainty
• 1:06:44
Speaker 4: of immediate discovery. Meet me at the corner of the
• 1:06:47
Speaker 4: avenue before the ball commences, and I will communicate any
• 1:06:50
Speaker 4: further instructions I may have to give you. Meanwhile, take
• 1:06:53
Speaker 4: this gives his money as an earnest of what you
• 1:06:57
Speaker 4: shall receive when the girl is secured. Remember silence and secrecy.
• 1:07:02
Speaker 6: Silence and secrecy. Exit, phlam, confidence and two guineas. I
• 1:07:09
Speaker 6: am perfectly bewildered with this tremendous secret. What shall I do?
• 1:07:13
Speaker 6: Where shall I go to my particular friend Old Benson
• 1:07:16
Speaker 6: or Young Benson or George Edmonds? Or no, I'll go
• 1:07:21
Speaker 6: and paralyze my particular friend John Maddox. Not a moment
• 1:07:25
Speaker 6: is to be lost. I am all in a flutter.
• 1:07:27
Speaker 6: Run away with Rose? I suppose he'll run away with
• 1:07:30
Speaker 6: Lucy next. I shouldn't wonder run away with Rose. I
• 1:07:35
  Speaker 6: never did.
• 1:07:36
Speaker 1: Exit hastily scene to an open spot in the village,
• 1:07:44
  Speaker 1: intersquire Norton.
• 1:07:46
Speaker 3: My mind is made up. This girl has opened her
• 1:07:49
Speaker 3: whole heart to me, and it would be worse than
• 1:07:52
Speaker 3: villainy to pursue her further, I will seek out benson
• 1:07:56
Speaker 3: and edmonds, and endeavor to repair the mischief my folly has.
• 1:07:59
Speaker 3: Occasionally I have sought happiness in the dissipation of crowded
• 1:08:03
Speaker 3: cities in vain. A country life offers health and cheerfulness,
• 1:08:08
Speaker 3: and a country life shall henceforth be mine in all.
• 1:08:12
Speaker 1: Seasons Psalm Squire Norton.
• 1:08:16
Speaker 3: There's a charm in spring, when everything is bursting from
• 1:08:19
Speaker 3: the ground, when pleasant showers bring forth the flowers, and
• 1:08:23
Speaker 3: all is life around. In summer day, the fragrant hay
• 1:08:29
Speaker 3: most sweetly sends the breeze, and all is still save
• 1:08:33
Speaker 3: murmuring rill or sound of humming bees. Old autumn, Come
• 1:08:39
Speaker 3: with trusty gun in quest of birds. We roam on
• 1:08:43
Speaker 3: erring aim, We mark the game, and proudly bear at home.
• 1:08:48
Speaker 3: A winter's night has its delight. Well warmed to bed
• 1:08:51
Speaker 3: we go a winter's day where blithe and gay snipe
• 1:08:55
Speaker 3: shooting in the snow. A country life without the strife
• 1:08:59
Speaker 3: and noisy dinn of time is all I need. I
• 1:09:02
Speaker 3: take no heed of splendor or renown. And when I die, Oh,
• 1:09:07
Speaker 3: let me lie where trees above me wave, Let wild
• 1:09:11
Speaker 3: plants bloom around my tomb. My quiet country grave.
• 1:09:18
Speaker 1: Exit Scene three the rickyard, same as Act one, seeing
• 1:09:24
Speaker 1: one Edmunds and Maddox meeting.
• 1:09:27
Speaker 2: Ah, George, why this is kind to come down to
• 1:09:32
Speaker 2: the old farm today and take one peep at us
• 1:09:35
Speaker 2: before we leave it forever? I suppose it's fancy now, George,
• 1:09:40
Speaker 2: But that my thinking. I never saw the hedges look
• 1:09:44
Speaker 2: so fresh, the fields so rich, of the old house
• 1:09:49
Speaker 2: so pretty and comfortable as they do this morning. It's
• 1:09:53
Speaker 2: fancy that, George, ain't it.
• 1:09:55
Speaker 7: It's a place you may well be fond of and
• 1:09:57
Speaker 7: attached to, for it's the prettiest spot in all the round.
• 1:10:01
Speaker 2: Ah, you always enter into my feelings. And speaking of that,
• 1:10:06
Speaker 2: I want to ask your advice about Rose. I meant
• 1:10:10
Speaker 2: to come up to you today on purpose. Do you
• 1:10:13
Speaker 2: think she is fond of me?
• 1:10:15
  Speaker 12: George Edmund's smiling?
• 1:10:18
Speaker 7: What do you think? She has not shown any desperate
• 1:10:21
Speaker 7: warmth of affection of le Tashi?
• 1:10:24
Speaker 2: No, No, she certainly has not. But she used to once.
• 1:10:29
Speaker 2: And the girl has got a good heart after all.
• 1:10:33
Speaker 2: And she came crying to me this morning in the
• 1:10:35
Speaker 2: little paddock, and somehow or other my heart melted towards her.
• 1:10:41
Speaker 2: And there's something very pleasant about her manner, isn't there.
• 1:10:48
Speaker 7: George, no doubt of it, as other people besides ourselves
• 1:10:53
Speaker 7: would appear to think.
• 1:10:55
Speaker 12: You mean, mister flamm Edmunds nods assent.
• 1:11:00
Speaker 2: Ah. It's a bad business altogether, But still there are
• 1:11:05
Speaker 2: some excuses to be made for a young country girl
• 1:11:09
Speaker 2: who has never seen a town gentleman before, and can't
• 1:11:12
Speaker 2: be expected to know as well as you and I, George,
• 1:11:14
Speaker 2: what the real worth of one is, however that may be.
• 1:11:19
Speaker 2: Rose came into the little paddock this morning as I
• 1:11:22
Speaker 2: was standing there, looking at the young cults and thinking
• 1:11:25
Speaker 2: of all our misfortunes. And first of all, she walked
• 1:11:29
Speaker 2: by me, and then she stopped at a little distance,
• 1:11:33
Speaker 2: and then she walked back and stopped again, and I
• 1:11:38
Speaker 2: heard her sobbing, as if her heart would burst. And
• 1:11:41
Speaker 2: then she came a little nearer, and at last she
• 1:11:43
Speaker 2: laid her hand upon my arm and looked up in
• 1:11:46
Speaker 2: my face, and the tears started into my eyes, George,
• 1:11:51
Speaker 2: and I couldn't bear it any longer, for I thought
• 1:11:54
Speaker 2: of the many pleasant days we had been happy together,
• 1:11:58
Speaker 2: and it hurt me to think that she should ever
• 1:12:01
Speaker 2: have done anything to make her afraid of me, or
• 1:12:04
Speaker 2: me unkind to her.
• 1:12:07
Speaker 7: You're good fellow, John, an excellent fellow. Take her. I
• 1:12:11
Speaker 7: believe her to have an excellent disposition, though it is
• 1:12:14
Speaker 7: a little disguised by girlish levity. Sometimes you may safely
• 1:12:18
Speaker 7: take her. If she had far less good feeling than
• 1:12:21
Speaker 7: she actually possesses, she could never abuse your kind and
• 1:12:24
  Speaker 7: affectionate nature.
• 1:12:26
Speaker 2: Is that your advice?
• 1:12:29
Speaker 12: Give me your hand, George, they shake hands.
• 1:12:33
Speaker 2: I will take her. You shall dance at our wedding,
• 1:12:37
Speaker 2: and I don't quite despair yet of dancing at yours
• 1:12:40
Speaker 2: at the same time at mine?
• 1:12:45
Speaker 7: Where is the old man? I came here to offer
• 1:12:47
Speaker 7: him the little cottage in the village which belongs to me.
• 1:12:50
Speaker 7: There is no tenant in it now. It has a
• 1:12:52
Speaker 7: pretty garden, of which I know he is fond, and
• 1:12:55
Speaker 7: it may serve his turn till he has had time
• 1:12:58
Speaker 7: to look about him.
• 1:13:00
Speaker 2: He is somewhere about the farm. Walk with me across
• 1:13:04
Speaker 2: the yard, and perhaps we may meet them this.
• 1:13:06
Speaker 1: Way, excellant, enter young Benton.
• 1:13:11
Speaker 10: The worst portion of the poor old man's hard trial
• 1:13:13
Speaker 10: is past. I have lingered with him in every field
• 1:13:16
Speaker 10: on the land, and wandered through every room of the
• 1:13:18
Speaker 10: old house. I can neither blame his grief nor console
• 1:13:22
Speaker 10: him in his affliction. For the farm has been the
• 1:13:25
Speaker 10: happiest scene of my birth and boyhood, and I feel
• 1:13:27
Speaker 10: in looking on it for the last time, as if
• 1:13:30
Speaker 10: I were leave it, the dearest friend of my youth.
• 1:13:32
Speaker 1: Forever, song, Young Benton.
• 1:13:36
Speaker 10: My fair home is no longer mine. From its roof tree,
• 1:13:39
Speaker 10: I'm driven away, Alas who will tend the old vine
• 1:13:43
Speaker 10: which I planted in Infancy's day? The garden and the
• 1:13:47
Speaker 10: beauteous flowers, the oak with its branches on high, dear
• 1:13:51
Speaker 10: friends of my happiest hours among ye I long hoped
• 1:13:55
Speaker 10: to die. The briar, the moss, and the bramble along
• 1:13:59
Speaker 10: the green paths will run wild, the paths where I
• 1:14:03
Speaker 10: want used to ramble an innocent, light hearted child.
• 1:14:08
Speaker 1: At the conclusion of the song, enter to the symphony,
• 1:14:11
Speaker 1: Old Benson with Lucy and Rose, Young Benson advanced to
• 1:14:17
  Speaker 1: meet him.
• 1:14:17
Speaker 5: Come father, Come, I am ready, boy. We have but
• 1:14:23
Speaker 5: to walk a few steps, and the pang of leaving
• 1:14:26
Speaker 5: will be over come. Rose, Bring on that unappy girl.
• 1:14:31
Speaker 1: Come as they are going into the squire who meets them.
• 1:14:36
Speaker 3: I am in time.
• 1:14:38
Speaker 1: Benson to Young Benson, who is advancing.
• 1:14:40
Speaker 5: Harry, stand back, mister Norton. If by this visit you
• 1:14:46
Speaker 5: intend to mock misery you have inflicted here, it is
• 1:14:49
Speaker 5: a heartless insult that might have been spared.
• 1:14:53
Speaker 3: You do me an injustice, Benson. I come here not
• 1:14:56
Speaker 3: to insult your grief, but to entreat, implore you to
• 1:15:00
Speaker 3: remain the least of this farm shall be renewed. I
• 1:15:04
Speaker 3: beseech you to remain here.
• 1:15:06
Speaker 5: It is not the quitting, even the home of my infancy,
• 1:15:10
Speaker 5: which most men love, that bows my spirit down today.
• 1:15:15
Speaker 5: Here in this old house, for near two hundred years,
• 1:15:19
Speaker 5: my ancestors have lived and died, and left their names
• 1:15:24
Speaker 5: behind them, free from spot or blemish. I am the
• 1:15:28
Speaker 5: first to cross its threshold with the brand of infamy
• 1:15:32
Speaker 5: upon me. Would to God I have been born from
• 1:15:36
Speaker 5: this porch, a senseless corpse, many weary years ago, so
• 1:15:41
Speaker 5: that I had been spared this hard calamity. You have
• 1:15:46
Speaker 5: moved an old man's weakness. But not with your revenge, Sir,
• 1:15:50
Speaker 5: you implore me to remain here. I spurn your offer. Here,
• 1:15:56
Speaker 5: a father yielding to the destroyer of his child's good
• 1:16:00
Speaker 5: name and honor, say no more, sir. Let me pass.
• 1:16:05
Speaker 1: Enter behind Stokes and Edmunds Benson.
• 1:16:10
Speaker 3: You are guilty of the foulest injustice, not to me,
• 1:16:13
Speaker 3: but to your daughter, after her fearless confession to me
• 1:16:17
Speaker 3: this morning, of her love for Edmunds and her abhorrence
• 1:16:20
Speaker 3: of my professions. I honor her too much to injure
• 1:16:23
  Speaker 3: her or you.
• 1:16:25
Speaker 8: Dear father. It is true, indeed, the noble behavior of
• 1:16:29
Speaker 8: his honor to me this morning, I can never forget
• 1:16:32
Speaker 8: or be too grateful for.
• 1:16:34
Speaker 5: Thank God, thank God, I can look upon her once again,
• 1:16:42
Speaker 5: my child, my own child.
• 1:16:46
Speaker 1: He embraces her with great emotion.
• 1:16:48
Speaker 5: I have done your honor wrong, and I hope you'll
• 1:16:52
  Speaker 5: forgive me.
• 1:16:53
Speaker 1: They shake hands. Martin runs forward.
• 1:16:58
Speaker 6: So have I, So have I. I have done his
• 1:17:00
Speaker 6: honor wrong, and I hope he'll forgive me too. You
• 1:17:03
Speaker 6: don't leave the farm, then, Hurrah.
• 1:17:06
Speaker 1: A man carrying a pail some harness, et cetera crosses
• 1:17:10
  Speaker 1: the stage.
• 1:17:11
Speaker 6: Hello, young fellow, go back, go back, don't take another
• 1:17:15
Speaker 6: thing away, and bring back all you have carried off.
• 1:17:18
Speaker 6: They are going to stop in the farm.
• 1:17:20
Speaker 12: Hello, you fellows calling off.
• 1:17:23
Speaker 6: Leave the barn alone and put everything in its place.
• 1:17:25
Speaker 6: They are going to stop in the farm.
• 1:17:28
Speaker 1: Exit bawling Benson, seeing Edmonds.
• 1:17:32
Speaker 5: Walk George here and turning away from his old friend
• 1:17:38
Speaker 5: too without a look of congratulation or a shake of
• 1:17:41
Speaker 5: the hand, just at the time when of all others
• 1:17:45
Speaker 5: he had the best right to expect it. For shame, George,
• 1:17:51
  Speaker 5: for shame, my.
• 1:17:53
Speaker 7: Errand here is rendered useless, accident and not intentionally. I
• 1:17:58
Speaker 7: partly overheard just now the name nature of the avowal
• 1:18:01
Speaker 7: made by your daughter to mister Norton this morning.
• 1:18:04
Speaker 5: You believe it, George, You cannot doubt its truth.
• 1:18:08
Speaker 7: I do believe it. But I have been hurt, slighted,
• 1:18:13
Speaker 7: set aside for another. My honest love has been despised.
• 1:18:17
Speaker 7: My affection has been remembered, only to be tried almost
• 1:18:21
Speaker 7: beyond endurance. Lucy, all this from you, I freely forgive.
• 1:18:27
Speaker 7: Be what you have been once and what you may
• 1:18:30
Speaker 7: so well become again. Be the high souled woman, not
• 1:18:35
Speaker 7: the light and thoughtless trifle that disgraces the name. Let
• 1:18:39
Speaker 7: me see you this, and you are mine again. Let
• 1:18:42
Speaker 7: me see what you have been of late, and I
• 1:18:44
Speaker 7: never can be yours leader.
• 1:18:47
Speaker 5: In Rose, Come dear, come.
• 1:18:50
Speaker 1: The Bensons, and Rose lead her slowly away.
• 1:18:54
Speaker 7: Mister Norton. If this altered conduct be sincere, it deserves
• 1:18:59
Speaker 7: a much better return, then my poor thanks can ever
• 1:19:01
Speaker 7: be to you. If it be feigned to save some
• 1:19:05
Speaker 7: purposes of your own, the consequences will be upon.
• 1:19:08
Speaker 3: Your head, and I shall be prepared to meet them.
• 1:19:12
Speaker 1: Do it, Squire Norton and Edmunds.
• 1:19:16
Speaker 3: Listen though I do not fear you, Listen to me,
• 1:19:19
  Speaker 3: ere we part.
• 1:19:21
Speaker 7: Listen to you. Yes, I will hear you.
• 1:19:24
Speaker 3: Yours alone is Lucy's heart. I swear it by that
• 1:19:27
  Speaker 3: heaven above me.
• 1:19:29
Speaker 7: What can I believe? My ears? Could I hope that
• 1:19:32
Speaker 7: she still loves me?
• 1:19:33
Speaker 3: Banish all these doubts and fears if a love were
• 1:19:37
Speaker 3: air worth gaining, if love were ever fond and true,
• 1:19:40
Speaker 3: no disguise or passion feigning such is her young love
• 1:19:45
Speaker 3: for you. Listen, though I do not fear you, Listen
• 1:19:50
  Speaker 3: to me.
• 1:19:50
Speaker 7: Ere we part, Listen to you, Yes, I will hear you.
• 1:19:54
Speaker 7: Mine alone is her young heart.
• 1:19:57
Speaker 1: Excellence Severally, Scene four, the avenue leading to the hall
• 1:20:03
Speaker 1: by moonlight. The house is in the distance, gaily illuminated.
• 1:20:08
Speaker 1: Enter flam and Martin.
• 1:20:11
Speaker 4: You have got the letter I gave you for the Squire.
• 1:20:13
Speaker 6: All right here it is the moment.
• 1:20:15
Speaker 4: You see me leave the room, slip it into the
• 1:20:17
Speaker 4: squire's hand. You can easily do so without being recognized
• 1:20:21
Speaker 4: in the confusion of the dance, and then follow me.
• 1:20:23
Speaker 4: You perfectly understand your instructions.
• 1:20:26
Speaker 6: Oh yes, I understand them well enough.
• 1:20:28
Speaker 4: There's nothing more than that. Do you want to know?
• 1:20:31
  Speaker 5: No?
• 1:20:31
Speaker 6: Nothing, Oh yes there is. I want to know whether whether,
• 1:20:37
Speaker 6: well go on, whether you could conveniently manage to let
• 1:20:41
Speaker 6: me have another couple of guineas before you go away
• 1:20:43
Speaker 6: in the chaise payment beforehand capital custom, And if you don't,
• 1:20:48
Speaker 6: perhaps I may not get them at all, you know, aside,
• 1:20:52
Speaker 6: seeing that I don't intend to go at all, I
• 1:20:54
Speaker 6: think it's very likely.
• 1:20:55
Speaker 4: You're a remarkably pleasant Fellow's Stokes in general conversation, very
• 1:21:01
Speaker 4: but when you descend into particularities you become excessively prosy.
• 1:21:05
Speaker 4: On some points money matters, for instance, you have a
• 1:21:08
Speaker 4: very grasping imagination and seem disposed to dilate upon them
• 1:21:12
Speaker 4: at too great a length. You must cure yourself of
• 1:21:15
Speaker 4: this habit. You must. Indeed, goodbye, Stokes. You shall have
• 1:21:18
Speaker 4: the two guineas doubled when the journey is completed. Remember
• 1:21:22
Speaker 4: ten o'clock exit flam.
• 1:21:25
Speaker 6: I shan't forget ten o'clock. Depend upon it now to
• 1:21:28
Speaker 6: purst upon my particular friend, mister John Mannox, with the
• 1:21:31
Speaker 6: awful disclosure. He must pass this way on his road
• 1:21:34
Speaker 6: to the hall. Here they come, don't see him though.
• 1:21:38
Speaker 1: Groups of male and female villagers and cloaks, et cetera
• 1:21:42
Speaker 1: crossed the stage on their way to the hall.
• 1:21:45
Speaker 6: How are you, Tom? How do will.
• 1:21:51
Speaker 1: Martin? Shaking hands with them?
• 1:21:53
Speaker 6: How do susan mind carry? You're my first partner. I
• 1:21:56
Speaker 6: always kiss your first partner, capital custom, kiss her goodbye?
• 1:22:01
Speaker 6: See you up at the hall. Not among them?
• 1:22:07
Speaker 1: More villagers cross nor them.
• 1:22:11
Speaker 6: Here he comes Rose with him too, innocent, little victim,
• 1:22:15
Speaker 6: little thinking of the atrocious designs that are going on
• 1:22:18
  Speaker 6: against her.
• 1:22:19
Speaker 1: Inter Maddox and Rose arm in.
• 1:22:22
  Speaker 12: Arm ha ha.
• 1:22:25
Speaker 2: That was a good un, wasn't it? Oh Marton? I
• 1:22:30
Speaker 2: wish i'd seen you a minute ago? I made such
• 1:22:32
Speaker 2: a joke. How you would have loved?
• 1:22:36
Speaker 1: Martin mysteriously beckoning Maddox away from Rose and whispering, I
• 1:22:40
  Speaker 1: want to.
• 1:22:40
Speaker 2: Speak to you, what about Lord?
• 1:22:43
Speaker 11: Don't stand there whispering John, If you have anything to say,
• 1:22:46
Speaker 11: mister Stokes, say it before.
• 1:22:48
Speaker 1: Me, John taking her arm.
• 1:22:51
Speaker 2: Ah, say it before her. Don't mind her, Martin. She's
• 1:22:55
Speaker 2: to be my wife, you know? And where to be
• 1:22:57
Speaker 2: on the mutual confidence principle. Hain't we Rose to be sure?
• 1:23:02
Speaker 11: Why don't you speak, mister Stokes? I suppose it's the
• 1:23:04
  Speaker 11: old story something.
• 1:23:05
Speaker 6: Wrong, something wrong. I rather think there is, and you
• 1:23:09
Speaker 6: little know what it is, or you wouldn't look so merry.
• 1:23:12
Speaker 6: What have I got to say? Don't be frightened, Miss
• 1:23:15
Speaker 6: Rose relates to don't alarm yourself, mister Maddox.
• 1:23:19
  Speaker 2: I ain't alarming myself. You're alarmin me.
• 1:23:22
Speaker 11: Go on, go on, can't you?
• 1:23:25
  Speaker 6: Relates to mister.
• 1:23:26
Speaker 1: Flam John dropping Rose's arm, mister Flann.
• 1:23:32
Speaker 6: Hush and miss Rose.
• 1:23:35
Speaker 11: Me me and mister flam.
• 1:23:37
Speaker 6: Mister flamm in tens at ten o'clock this very night.
• 1:23:40
Speaker 6: Don't be frightened, miss by force in secret and in
• 1:23:43
Speaker 6: a chaisee and four two to carry off against her
• 1:23:46
Speaker 6: will and elope with Miss Rose me.
• 1:23:50
Speaker 1: Oh, screams and falls into the arms of Maddox.
• 1:23:54
Speaker 2: Rub her hands, Martin, she's going off in a fit.
• 1:23:57
Speaker 6: Never mind, she'd better go off in a fit than
• 1:23:59
Speaker 6: a chaise Rose recovering.
• 1:24:02
Speaker 11: Oh, John, don't let me go.
• 1:24:04
Speaker 2: Let you go, not if I set the whole hole
• 1:24:07
  Speaker 2: on fire.
• 1:24:08
Speaker 11: Hold me fast, John.
• 1:24:09
Speaker 2: I'll hold you fast enough, depend upon it.
• 1:24:12
Speaker 11: Come on the other side of me, mister Stokes. Take
• 1:24:15
Speaker 11: my arm, Hold me tight, mister Stokes.
• 1:24:17
Speaker 6: Don't be frightened. I'll take care of you.
• 1:24:19
Speaker 1: Takes her arm hole, mister Stokes.
• 1:24:22
Speaker 6: Oh indeed, nothing wrong?
• 1:24:24
Speaker 11: Eh, Oh, mister Stokes, pray forgive my having doubted that
• 1:24:27
Speaker 11: there was? Oh, what a dreadful thing. What is to
• 1:24:29
Speaker 11: be done with me?
• 1:24:30
Speaker 6: Upon my word? I don't know. I think we had
• 1:24:32
Speaker 6: better shut her up in some place underground, hadn't we, John?
• 1:24:36
Speaker 6: Or stay? Suppose we borrow the keys of the family
• 1:24:39
Speaker 6: vault and lock her up there for an hour or two?
• 1:24:42
Speaker 11: Capital Lo, surely you must find out some more agreeable
• 1:24:45
Speaker 11: place than that, John, I have it.
• 1:24:48
Speaker 6: I'm to carry her off you you me, don't be
• 1:24:52
Speaker 6: afraid of me all my management. You dance with her
• 1:24:56
Speaker 6: all the evening, and I'll keep close to you. Anyone
• 1:24:58
Speaker 6: tries to get her away, you him down and I'll
• 1:25:01
  Speaker 6: help you.
• 1:25:02
  Speaker 2: That's the plan.
• 1:25:03
Speaker 11: Come along, Oh, I am so frightened. Hold me fast,
• 1:25:06
  Speaker 11: mister Stokes.
• 1:25:07
Speaker 1: Don't let me go, John, excellent talking enter lucy.
• 1:25:12
Speaker 8: Light hearted revelers. How I envy them. How painful is
• 1:25:16
Speaker 8: my situation, obliged with a sad heart to attender festivity
• 1:25:21
Speaker 8: from which the only person I would care to meet
• 1:25:23
Speaker 8: will I know, be absent. But I will not complain.
• 1:25:28
Speaker 8: He shall see that I can become worthy of him
• 1:25:30
Speaker 8: once again. I have lingered here so long, watching the
• 1:25:34
Speaker 8: soft shades of evening as they closed around me, that
• 1:25:38
Speaker 8: I cannot bear the thought of exchanging this beautiful scene
• 1:25:41
Speaker 8: for the noise and glare of a crowded room. Song Lucy,
• 1:25:47
Speaker 8: how beautiful at eventide to see the twilight shadows pale
• 1:25:52
Speaker 8: steal o'er the landscape far and wide, or stream and meadow,
• 1:25:56
Speaker 8: mound and dale. How soft is nature's calm when evening
• 1:26:01
Speaker 8: skies their cool dews weep, the gentlest wind more gently blows,
• 1:26:06
Speaker 8: as if to soothe her in her sleep. The gay
• 1:26:09
Speaker 8: morn breaks miss roll away, all nature awakes to glorious
• 1:26:14
Speaker 8: day in my breast alone, dark shadows remain the piece
• 1:26:19
Speaker 8: it has known. It can never regain.
• 1:26:24
Speaker 1: Seen the last. A spacious ballroom brilliantly illuminated. A window
• 1:26:29
Speaker 1: at the end through which is seen a moonlit landscape,
• 1:26:33
Speaker 1: A large concourse of country people discovered the Squire, Flam,
• 1:26:38
Speaker 1: the Bensons, Lucy, Rose, Martin and Maddox.
• 1:26:43
Speaker 3: Welcome friends, Welcome all. Come, choose your partners and begin
• 1:26:48
  Speaker 3: the dance.
• 1:26:50
Speaker 4: Flam to Lucy, your hand for the dance.
• 1:26:54
Speaker 8: Pray excuse me, sir, I am not well. My head
• 1:26:58
Speaker 8: is oppressed and giddy. I would sit by the window
• 1:27:01
Speaker 8: which looks into the garden and feel the cool evening air.
• 1:27:05
Speaker 1: She goes up, He follows her, John aside.
• 1:27:09
Speaker 2: Stand by me, Martin, he's gone to order the chaisse.
• 1:27:12
Speaker 11: Perhaps, Oh, pray, don't let me be taken away, mister Stokes.
• 1:27:16
Speaker 6: Don't be frightened. Don't be frightened. Mister Flamm is gone.
• 1:27:19
Speaker 6: I'll give the Squire the note in a minute.
• 1:27:22
Speaker 3: Now begin the dance, a country dance.
• 1:27:26
Speaker 1: Martin and Maddox, in their endeavors to keep close to Rose,
• 1:27:29
Speaker 1: occasion great confusion. As the Squire is looking at some
• 1:27:34
Speaker 1: particular couple in the dance. Martin steals behind him, thrust
• 1:27:38
Speaker 1: the letter into his hands, and resumes his place. The
• 1:27:41
Speaker 1: Squire looks round as if to discover the person who
• 1:27:44
Speaker 1: has delivered it. But being unsuccessful, puts it up and
• 1:27:48
Speaker 1: retires among the crowded dancers. Suddenly, a violent scream is heard,
• 1:27:53
Speaker 1: and the dance abruptly ceases. Great confusion, Martin and Maddox
• 1:27:58
  Speaker 1: hold Rose firmly.
• 1:28:01
Speaker 3: What has happened? Whence did that?
• 1:28:02
  Speaker 11: Screen?
• 1:28:03
  Speaker 3: Proceed from London?
• 1:28:07
Speaker 7: Edmunds without raise him and bring him here? Lucy, Dear Lucy.
• 1:28:13
Speaker 1: Lucy, my child runs up the stage and exit into
• 1:28:17
  Speaker 1: the garden.
• 1:28:19
Speaker 6: His child, damn, can't get this one, so they're gonna
• 1:28:22
Speaker 6: run away with the other. Here's some mistake here, Let
• 1:28:25
Speaker 6: me go, Rose, come along, John, make way there, make way.
• 1:28:30
Speaker 1: As they run towards the window, Edmonds appears at it,
• 1:28:33
Speaker 1: without a hat and his dress disordered. With Lucy in
• 1:28:37
Speaker 1: his arms, he delivers her to her father and Rose.
• 1:28:41
Speaker 11: Lucy, Dear Lucy, look up? Is sheer?
• 1:28:44
Speaker 5: George? Is the poor child injured?
• 1:28:47
Speaker 7: No? It is nothing but ter She will be better instantly.
• 1:28:51
Speaker 7: See she is recovering now.
• 1:28:53
Speaker 1: Lucy gradually recovers as flam, his clothes torn and his
• 1:28:56
Speaker 1: face disfigured, is let in by Maddox and mar Mister Norton.
• 1:29:02
Speaker 5: This is an act of perjury and baseness of which
• 1:29:05
Speaker 5: another instant would have witnessed the completion.
• 1:29:08
Speaker 1: Squire to Phlam Rascal, this is your deed, Flam, assigned
• 1:29:14
  Speaker 1: to Norton.
• 1:29:15
Speaker 4: That's right, Norton, keep it up.
• 1:29:18
Speaker 3: Do not address me with your odious familiarity, scoundrel.
• 1:29:22
Speaker 4: You didn't really mean to give me up.
• 1:29:25
Speaker 3: I renounce you from this instant.
• 1:29:27
Speaker 4: You do, then take the consequences.
• 1:29:30
Speaker 3: Benson Edmunds friends, I declare to you most solemnly that
• 1:29:34
Speaker 3: I had neither hand nor part in this disgraceful outrage.
• 1:29:38
Speaker 3: It has been perpetrated without my knowledge, wholly by that scoundrel.
• 1:29:42
Speaker 4: Tis false. It was done with his consent. He has
• 1:29:46
Speaker 4: in his pocket at this moment a letter from me,
• 1:29:48
Speaker 4: acquainting him with my intention.
• 1:29:50
  Speaker 7: A letter.
• 1:29:52
Speaker 3: That letter was put into my hands five minutes since.
• 1:29:55
Speaker 3: But it acquainted me not with his fellow's intention, but
• 1:29:59
Speaker 3: with his realness, hoble and disgraceful character to which I
• 1:30:02
Speaker 3: had hitherto been a stranger to Flam. Do you know
• 1:30:05
Speaker 3: that handwriting, sir, showing him.
• 1:30:08
Speaker 1: The letter Ellis's letter, searching his pockets and producing the other.
• 1:30:14
Speaker 4: I must ask that I was I did enclose the
• 1:30:18
  Speaker 4: wrong one.
• 1:30:19
Speaker 3: You will quit my house this instant it's rufe. Shall
• 1:30:22
Speaker 3: not shelter you another night. Take that with you, sir,
• 1:30:25
  Speaker 3: and be gone.
• 1:30:26
Speaker 1: Throws him a purse, flam taking it up.
• 1:30:30
Speaker 4: Ah, I suppose you think this munificent, now eh, I
• 1:30:33
Speaker 4: could have made twice as much of you in London, Norton.
• 1:30:35
Speaker 4: I could, indeed, to say nothing of my exhibiting myself
• 1:30:38
Speaker 4: for a whole week to these clods of earth, which
• 1:30:41
Speaker 4: would have been cheap dirt, cheap at double the money.
• 1:30:45
Speaker 4: Bye Bye Norton, Farewell grubs Exit.
• 1:30:50
Speaker 3: Edmunds. You have rescued your future wife from brutal violence.
• 1:30:54
Speaker 3: You will not leave her exposed to similar attempts in future.
• 1:30:58
Speaker 7: Even if I would. I feel that I have preserved
• 1:31:00
Speaker 7: her that I could.
• 1:31:01
Speaker 3: Not then take her. And we're through the old farm,
• 1:31:05
Speaker 3: which from henceforth is your own. You will not turn
• 1:31:08
Speaker 3: the old man out.
• 1:31:09
Speaker 1: I suppose Edmunds shaking Benson by the hand.
• 1:31:13
Speaker 7: I don't think we are very likely to quirel on
• 1:31:15
Speaker 7: that score, and most gratefully do we acknowledge your honor's kindness. Maddox. Hello,
• 1:31:21
Speaker 7: I shall not want that cottage and garden we were
• 1:31:23
Speaker 7: speaking of this morning. Now let me imitate a good
• 1:31:26
Speaker 7: example and bestow it on your wife as her marriage porson.
• 1:31:30
Speaker 11: Oh delightful, say certainly, John, can't you thank e?
• 1:31:34
  Speaker 12: George? Thank eh?
• 1:31:36
Speaker 2: I say, Martin, I have arrived at the dignity of
• 1:31:38
Speaker 2: a cottage and a piece of ground at last.
• 1:31:41
Speaker 6: Yes, you may henceforth consider yourself on a level with me.
• 1:31:46
  Speaker 3: Resume the dance.
• 1:31:48
Speaker 6: I beg your pardon.
• 1:31:49
Speaker 1: One word, whispers the squire.
• 1:31:52
Speaker 3: I hope not recollect. You have been mistaken before today
• 1:31:57
Speaker 3: you had better inquire.
• 1:31:59
Speaker 6: I will to the audience my very particular friend, if
• 1:32:04
Speaker 6: he will allow me to call himself. Oh, certainly, my
• 1:32:08
Speaker 6: very particular friend. Mister Norton wishes me to ask my
• 1:32:11
Speaker 6: other particular friends here whether there's anything wrong. We are
• 1:32:16
Speaker 6: delighted to hear your approving opinion. In the old way,
• 1:32:19
Speaker 6: you can't do better. It's a capital custom.
• 1:32:22
Speaker 1: Dance and finale chorus.
