- 0:00Yeah. The ball rolls fast, like a
- 0:12shooting star chasing dreams. We've come so far.
- 0:18The world 's our state. Hey there, Kick Cast Daily is
- 0:42back, and today we're diving deep, covering everything from
- 0:46record-breaking athletes to incredible science, amazing
- 0:50animals, and beyond. Today we're talking about a
- 0:53sports moment that kicked off a giant tradition in the United
- 0:57States, the very first Super Bowl.
- 1:00We'll explore how 2 rival football leagues met on one
- 1:03field, why it mattered, and how it changed the game you see on
- 1:08TV today. So let's get on with today's
- 1:11episode. First, let's set the scene.
- 1:24In the 1960s, professional American football had two
- 1:28separate leagues. 1 was the NFL, which had been around for
- 1:32decades. The other was the AFLA newer
- 1:36league that started in 1960. Both leagues one of the best
- 1:40college players, the biggest crowds, and the most TV viewers.
- 1:45Sometimes a college star would be drafted by both leagues on
- 1:48the same day and have to choose which team to sign with.
- 1:52This competition pushed salaries up and made every offseason A
- 1:56scramble. All that rivalry led to a big
- 1:59decision. the Champions of each league would face each other
- 2:03after the 1966 season to see who is truly #1.
- 2:08The game took place on January 15th, 1967 at the Los Angeles
- 2:13Memorial Coliseum in California. The NFL champions, the Green Bay
- 2:18Packers, played the AFL champions, the Kansas City
- 2:22Chiefs. The coaches were famous too,
- 2:25Vince Lombardi for the Packers and Hank Stram for the Chiefs.
- 2:30The weather was mild, the field was grass, and the stage was set
- 2:34for something brand new. Did you know the game was not
- 2:37officially called the Super Bowl yet?
- 2:40It's official name was the AFLNFL World Championship Game.
- 2:44the Super Bowl 1 label came later after the name caught on.
- 2:48Also, did you know that two different television networks
- 2:52aired the same game at the same time?
- 2:54That almost never happens in sports today.
- 2:57CBS broadcast the game for one audience and NBC for another,
- 3:02each with its own announcers. Before we get to the score,
- 3:06let's talk about how the game unfolded.
- 3:08The Chiefs were fast and creative on offense, and the
- 3:12Packers were strong and well prepared.
- 3:15At half time, Green Bay LED 14 to 10, which meant it was still
- 3:19close, but the second-half tilted toward the Packers.
- 3:24A key play came early in the third quarter when Green Bay
- 3:27defensive back Willie Would grabbed an interception and set
- 3:30up a score. The Packers pulled away with
- 3:33steady drives and solid defense. The final score was Green Bay
- 3:3835, Kansas City 10. The quarterback for Green Bay,
- 3:43Bart Starr, played such a clean and effective game that he was
- 3:46named the very first Super Bowl Most Valuable Player.
- 3:50Did you know the championship trophy would later be named the
- 3:53Vince Lombardi Trophy? In honor of the Packers coach,
- 3:57let's pause for our first trivia question.
- 4:00Which team owner first suggested the term Super Bowl?
- 4:07It was Lamar Hunt of the Kansas City Chiefs.
- 4:10He mentioned the name during meetings and it stuck with fans
- 4:13and reporters until it became official.
- 4:21Here is a yes or no question with a detail many people miss
- 4:25during that first championship. Did each team use its own
- 4:29leagues football when it was on offense?
- 4:34No, both teams use the same official game ball throughout
- 4:38the game. This is a common myth, but in
- 4:41reality one standardized ball was used for the entire contest.
- 4:46Did you know ticket prices were much lower back then than today?
- 4:50The average ticket price was about $10.00, with the most
- 4:54expensive seats at $12.00. Even with a low price, there
- 4:58were empty seats at the stadium, which is surprising if you think
- 5:01about how hard Super Bowl tickets are to get now.
- 5:05Now for a second trivia question, this time about the
- 5:08halftime show. Which marching bands performed
- 5:11at the first Super Bowl halftime?
- 5:17The University of Arizona and Grambling State University
- 5:20marching bands performed along with trumpet player Al Hurt.
- 5:25Instead of huge pop concerts, the show focused on marching
- 5:29music and precision routines. The first Super Bowl also
- 5:33changed how people watched football on television.
- 5:36Millions tuned in and production crews learned how to place
- 5:39cameras, show replays and organize a very long pregame and
- 5:44halftime. Did you know the full official
- 5:47recording of the entire game was not carefully saved at the time?
- 5:51That might sound odd, but archiving sports broadcast was
- 5:54not always a priority in the 1960s, and videotape was often
- 5:59reused. Let's turn that into a yes or no
- 6:07question to dig deeper. Was the complete original TV
- 6:11broadcast of Super Bowl 1 saved in a network archive?
- 6:15From start to finish, No. Only partial recordings
- 6:22survived, and later versions were reconstructed from
- 6:25different sources to let people see most of the action again.
- 6:29So why was this game such a big deal?
- 6:32It proved that a championship between the two leagues could
- 6:35draw nationwide attention. It also helped push the leagues
- 6:38to plan a full merger, which happened in 1970.
- 6:42After the merger, all teams played in one big organization
- 6:46called the National Football League, but they were divided
- 6:49into two conferences, the AFC and the NFC. the Champions of
- 6:55those conferences meet each season in what we now officially
- 6:58call the Super Bowl. Did you know The league started
- 7:01using Roman numerals to label most Super Bowls so people could
- 7:05tell them apart more easily? Back to the players.
- 7:08For a moment, Green Bay's offense worked through careful
- 7:11passes by Bart Starr and strong running by Jim Taylor and Elijah
- 7:16Pitts. Kansas City had a skilled
- 7:18quarterback named Len Dawson and a standout receiver named Otis
- 7:23Taylor who fought for big gains. The Chiefs also had strong
- 7:27defensive plays that kept the game competitive in the first
- 7:30half. But the Packers defense clamped
- 7:33down in the second-half, and Green Bay's experience in
- 7:36championship games made a difference.
- 7:39That combination of execution and preparation gave the NFL
- 7:43side a convincing win. Here comes another trivia
- 7:46question that jumps ahead just a little.
- 7:49What city hosted the very next championship game, Super Bowl 2?
- 7:57It was played in Miami, FL at the Orange Bowl.
- 8:01Green Bay won that 1-2, finishing off the early era of
- 8:05league versus league championships.
- 8:12As the years went on, the Super Bowl became the most watched
- 8:16single game of the season in American sports.
- 8:19Stadiums got bigger. TV graphics and instant replays
- 8:24improved. Halftime shows grew into major
- 8:27productions. Commercials became events on
- 8:30their own, but the roots of all that excitement trace back to
- 8:34that first meeting between the Packers and the Chiefs in Los
- 8:37Angeles. Did you know that despite the
- 8:39empty seats in 1967, some recent Super Bowls have had more than
- 8:4470,000 fans in attendance and well over 100 million viewers in
- 8:50the United States watching on TV?
- 8:52The first Super Bowl also showed how rules and styles could
- 8:56blend. The leagues learned from each
- 8:58other and standardized the way the game was played, including
- 9:02how the playoffs were structured and how the draft was organized.
- 9:06Team scouting improved, training methods advanced and the sport
- 9:10gained a more consistent national schedule.
- 9:13All of those changes helped make the game easier to follow for
- 9:16families, students, and new fans.
- 9:19Before we wrap up, let's do a quick recap of what we learned
- 9:22today. The very first Super Bowl was
- 9:25played on January 15th, 1967 at the Los Angeles Memorial
- 9:31Coliseum between the NF LS Green Bay Packers and the AF LS Kansas
- 9:36City Chiefs. The Packers, 135 to 10 and
- 9:40quarterback Bart Starr earned the MVP award.
- 9:43The game was officially called the AFLNFL World Championship
- 9:47Game at the time and two television networks aired it.
- 9:51Marching bands performed at halftime.
- 9:53Tickets ranged from about 6 to $12.00 and the events set the
- 9:57stage for the 1970 merger that created today's NFL structure
- 10:02with the AFC and NFC. We also discovered that the name
- 10:06Super Bowl came from Kansas City owner Lamar Hunt, that both
- 10:10teams use the same official game ball throughout the game, that
- 10:14the complete original TV broadcast was not saved and that
- 10:18the next championship was played in Miami.
- 10:26Thanks for listening and exploring how one historic game
- 10:29helped shape the sport millions enjoy today.
- 10:32The first Super Bowl was more than a score.
- 10:35It was the start of a tradition that keeps growing every season.
