- 0:01Speaker 1: Good morning everybody, and welcome. It's May eighteenth, or over
- 0:04Speaker 1: halfway through the month of May. Already today a new
- 0:07Speaker 1: article comes out about your next stop at Starbucks or
- 0:13Speaker 1: any of the coffee shops, and you get a to
- 0:16Speaker 1: go cup to go, you put that little sleeve on
- 0:20Speaker 1: there so it doesn't burn your hand. Scientists now measured
- 0:23Speaker 1: microplastics in those coffee cups to go cups. We're gonna
- 0:27Speaker 1: see what it says again a reason to protect yourself.
- 0:30Speaker 1: Stay tuned, hi, and welcome to Health Talk with Doctor Lynn,
- 0:33Speaker 1: your daily dose. The information you hear on the show
- 0:36Speaker 1: is informational. It's not meant to diagnose or treat any disease.
- 0:41Speaker 1: Any kind of complete health conditions must be checked out
- 0:45Speaker 1: and discussed with your primary care physician. Get ready for
- 0:49Speaker 1: the good news of the day. God bless you, folks,
- 0:53Speaker 1: and here is doctor Lynn. Our daily devotional today comes
- 0:56Speaker 1: from the Book of John Chapter four. Come to me

- 1:29Speaker 1: what I have prepared for you. As the heavens are
- 1:32Speaker 1: higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than
- 1:34Speaker 1: your ways, and my thoughts higher than your thoughts. Good
- 1:39Speaker 1: thoughts to think about today. Stay tuned seven two seven,
- 2:57Speaker 1: nine one six four two one five. The same cup
- 3:00Speaker 1: that keeps your coffee warm may be the very thing
- 3:03Speaker 1: that makes it less less safe to drink. A recent
- 3:07Speaker 1: study found that heat can release thousands of hundreds of
- 3:10Speaker 1: thousands of microplastics into a beverage, depending on the cut
- 3:13Speaker 1: material and temperature, raising questions about one of the world's
- 3:16Speaker 1: most common daily habits. The study, published in the Journal
- 3:20Speaker 1: of Hazardous Materials Plastics, found that heat is a key
- 3:24Speaker 1: driver of microplastic release from disposable containers. While microplastics leached
- 3:29Speaker 1: regardless of the temperatures at which the beverage was held,
- 3:32Speaker 1: leeching levels increased with the temperature rising. Researchers first analyzed
- 3:37Speaker 1: data from thirty peer reviewed studies on microplastic release from
- 3:41Speaker 1: various plastic products focusing on factors such as temperature and
- 3:45Speaker 1: soaking time. Products made of polyethylene, polyethylene, turf thiolate, polypropylene,
- 3:52Speaker 1: polystyrene showed significant increases in microplastic release as temperatures rose,
- 3:58Speaker 1: with the most profound effects and the high temperature range
- 4:01Speaker 1: typically of hot beverages. Polyethylene is commonly used in plastic
- 4:06Speaker 1: cups and liners, polypropylene is a takeaway containers and lids,
- 4:13Speaker 1: Polystyrene is foam cups and food packaging, and propylene is
- 4:20Speaker 1: in beverage bottles. Among these, the pet that let me see.
- 4:27Speaker 1: Polyethylene ter thiolate is generally showed the smallest increases in
- 4:32Speaker 1: the release of the rising temperature, suggesting greater thermal stability
- 4:36Speaker 1: than the other types. So again PE plastic cups and liners, PP,
- 4:41Speaker 1: takeaway containers and lids, PS, foam cups and food packaging, PET,
- 4:47Speaker 1: beverage bottles. Across studies, higher temperatures, especially above one hundred
- 4:51Speaker 1: and forty, linked to a sharper rise in those very
- 4:54Speaker 1: small particles under one micrometer relative to larger particles, suggesting
- 4:59Speaker 1: that heat accelerates surface breakdown. Cups and food containers showed
- 5:04Speaker 1: much stronger temperature related increases in microplastic release than bottles,
- 5:08Speaker 1: which usually made from more heat resistant plastics and are
- 5:11Speaker 1: less often used with hot liquids. The extent of leaching
- 5:15Speaker 1: varied widely depending on the material study design, with some
- 5:19Speaker 1: individual studies finding single conditions yielding hundreds and even hundreds
- 5:23Speaker 1: and hundreds of thousands of particles per liter of water temperature. However,
- 5:27Speaker 1: the time of beverage was left in the container wasn't
- 5:30Speaker 1: a consistent driver of microplastic leaching for temperature wise. For
- 5:35Speaker 1: a real world measure, researchers collected hundreds of coffee cups
- 5:39Speaker 1: made of two major types pe plastic cups and paper
- 5:43Speaker 1: cups lined with polyethylene coating, which looked like paper but
- 5:46Speaker 1: have a thin inner plastic layer to make them waterproof.
- 5:50Speaker 1: Study had two parts. The first involved analyzing existing research,
- 5:53Speaker 1: while the second involved a real world experiment. While the
- 5:56Speaker 1: review included several common plastics, the experimental portion of the
- 6:00Speaker 1: study focused specifically at two plastic types, which were identified
- 6:04Speaker 1: among the most commonly used takeaway cup types. In the experience,
- 6:07Speaker 1: the cups were filled with purified water with minerals and
- 6:11Speaker 1: ions removed to avoid background contamination at forty one degrees
- 6:14Speaker 1: Fahrenheite and one hundred and forty degrees fahrnhite to simulate
- 6:18Speaker 1: iced at hot coffee temperatures, respectively, The water was left
- 6:22Speaker 1: to sit for thirty minutes, a duration choosen to reflect
- 6:25Speaker 1: typical beverage contact time rather than long term storage, while
- 6:29Speaker 1: it was covered to avoid air borne contamination. Microplastics leached
- 6:34Speaker 1: into the water were then collected by filtration and analyzed.
- 6:37Speaker 1: The authors noted that temperature alone may not fully reflect
- 6:40Speaker 1: real world beverages, since factors such as coffee acidity and
- 6:44Speaker 1: milk fact could further influence all plastic shed particles. Both
- 6:48Speaker 1: cup types leached microplastics at both temperatures, but pe plastic
- 6:52Speaker 1: cups released more than the pe coated paper cups. Raising
- 6:56Speaker 1: the water temperature from cold to hot increased microplastic reasse
- 7:00Speaker 1: by roughly one third. Using microscopes to examine the inner surfaces,
- 7:06Speaker 1: the researchers found that heat exposure increased the surface roughness
- 7:09Speaker 1: of the polyethylene cups, creating a more uneven, damaged surface
- 7:13Speaker 1: prone to shedding particles. Their chemical analysis showed little evidence
- 7:17Speaker 1: that the heat change the plastics chemical composition indicated the
- 7:20Speaker 1: increase was driven by physical surface degradation rather than chemical breakdown,
- 7:28Speaker 1: so they're saying it's more complicated than just a label.
- 7:32Speaker 1: Lisa's Zimmerman, the lead author of the review, was not
- 7:35Speaker 1: involved in the study at this time, said microplastic release
- 7:38Speaker 1: depends more on whether the part product is labeled PE
- 7:42Speaker 1: or PET. Even two plastics identified as polyethylene can differ substantially.
- 7:47Speaker 1: The individual product and its handling determines the microplastic release.
- 7:52Speaker 1: Jane Munchi, managing director and chief Scientific officer with the
- 7:55Speaker 1: Food Packaging Forum in Zurd, Switzerland, said that paperffee cups
- 8:00Speaker 1: are also typically stacked during transport and storage. If printed
- 8:03Speaker 1: on the outside, the cup's exterior can touch another cup's interior,
- 8:07Speaker 1: process known to set off migration, allowing printing inks to
- 8:10Speaker 1: transfer to the food contact surface and potentially migrate into
- 8:14Speaker 1: hot drinks. Globally, an estimated two hundred and fifty to
- 8:17Speaker 1: three hundred billion single use disposable cups are discarded each year.
- 8:22Speaker 1: Growing evidence suggests these everyday products may also be a
- 8:25Speaker 1: source of microplastic exposure. While some studies suggest micro's plastic
- 8:30Speaker 1: exposure may trigger inflammation, oxidative stress, an immune response. Researchers
- 8:35Speaker 1: caution that there is still no clear consensus and how
- 8:38Speaker 1: much accumulates in the body. How do you enjoy your
- 8:41Speaker 1: coffee with fewer contaminants? Avoid heating food or drinks and
- 8:45Speaker 1: plastic containers. Let very hot foods or drinks cool sludy
- 8:48Speaker 1: before transferring them to plastic cups. Offer reusable non plastic
- 8:52Speaker 1: material sets as glass, ceramic, or stainless steel. Minimize wear
- 8:56Speaker 1: on plastic items and scratched and degraded plastics shed more.
- 8:59Speaker 1: Part of avoid plastic in both cups and preparation tools.
- 9:04Speaker 1: Choose paper tea bags for switch to loose leaf tea,
- 9:07Speaker 1: as some tea bags contain plastic. Many people started to
- 9:12Speaker 1: avoid plastic containers because of BPA bisp in la, a
- 9:16Speaker 1: chemical that has raised concerned about potential hormone disrupting effects.
- 9:20Speaker 1: The single use plastics are unavoidable. One of the easiest
- 9:22Speaker 1: ways to identify plastic types is by checking the recycling
- 9:25Speaker 1: code number from one to seven is stamped on the product.
- 9:29Speaker 1: These numbers generally correspond to specific polymers such as polyethylene
- 9:32Speaker 1: and et cetera. Some experts point to composable cops as
- 9:37Speaker 1: an alternative. Hoever, Zimmerman notes it even disposable cups made
- 9:40Speaker 1: from composable plastics are still plastics, therefore just as prone
- 9:44Speaker 1: to releasing microplastics. Remove Complete should be a part of
- 9:53Speaker 1: your normal regimen. Just take it away from all your
