- 2:10This is our show we call Friday Funhouse, our weekly step away from the
- 2:14news, from politics and such to focus on things a little bit, you
- 2:16know, fun My guest co host this week noted filmmaker, author, and
- 2:22all around good guy Danny Boyd. We'll get to him in a moment.
- 2:25Also, Evan Oswar from Capital Market is here. Danny Daniel, Danny Daniel,
- 2:30Danny, Danny, Welcome to the show. Thanks buddy. You and
- 2:35I were talking yesterday. Neither of us exactly knows, are completely sure when
- 2:39we first met, but it's been a long time, but it probably had
- 2:43something to do with the pro wrestling business. Well it did. I mean,
- 2:46my first job was safe you pull that microphone up. It just a
- 2:49little bit there for me. Yeah, there you go. My first job
- 2:53was Southern West Virginia Community College nineteen eighty and you were young. But I
- 3:00was gonna say I wasn't in college in nineteen eighty. Danny, Come on,
- 3:02but I think you met your your hill Billy cousin Burke Allen. Yeah,
- 3:07my unpaid around that time. Uh, but that that's I remember when
- 3:13you guys got into broadcasting. I don't know, you had to be too,
- 3:15you had to be like I was. Uh well, we had a
- 3:19high school radio station. So if you count that, I was fourteen fifteen,
- 3:23but professionally, uh, seventeen. I was senior in high school.
- 3:25So we're gonna we're gonna hash all that out a little bit later on.
- 3:29Plus you get to play ten questions. Great, that's it's he really let
- 3:32me welcome in Hannah Gardner from the canalag Chews, and you made association with
- 3:36this week's about me. Please ped the week. Hannah, good morning,
- 3:38How are you. I'm great, How are you? I'm fine? Hannah.
- 3:43Meet Danny. Danny meet Hannah. Hey, Hannah. Hello. Uh
- 3:46So, you know, Hannah is somebody that we've made a star out of
- 3:50it. In the last year and a half or so that we've been doing
- 3:52this. She gets more texts than I do, you know, to the
- 3:53show. So you know, Danny is a noted filmmaker, So you know,
- 3:58there may be a role for you in Hollywood, kid, Just so
- 4:00you know, all right, I'm keeping an eye out, man. All
- 4:04right, there's always the pet we are trying to get adopted. The picture
- 4:08posted on Dave Allen Radio and Facebook and also on X the Dave Allain Show.
- 4:13The particular pet this week's name is Whoopy, and again the picture is
- 4:17posted there on the social media's tell us about Whoopye Hannah, Okay, so
- 4:25Whoopy. She is a cute, cute little girl. I mean she's like
- 4:30a Merle like try collared. I mean possibly like if I had to guess,
- 4:38maybe mixed with like some Catahulau upper dog or something along those lines.
- 4:45Maybe maybe like mix us so loud or something. I'm not one hundred cent
- 4:49sure, but she is so cute, very very sweet, and I believe
- 4:56she is right about like thirty five ish pounds. She's a good sized dog.
- 5:01She is pretty pretty young, so she's only a year old, I
- 5:06believe, so she still got that energy, that puppy in her. She
- 5:11is a pretty playful, energetic dog herself. She actually prefers other dogs that
- 5:15are equally as playful or even more playful. She hasn't showed us any signs
- 5:21or given us any signs of any kind of resource garden or anything like that.
- 5:28She is a very, like I said, a very playful girl.
- 5:31So we always recommend with our more high energy dogs at the shelter that we
- 5:38consider them like a weekend adventure, so they would be like a good candidate
- 5:43for going out of town for the weekend or going on a trip for a
- 5:46day and hiking or something like that, just to get them out of the
- 5:50house doing something taken that energy out of that. Now she has been kid
- 5:57friendly from what we have seen, and on the least pool sometimes, but
- 6:00she is still young, so she just needs some training with that. But
- 6:05she's a very good all around dog. She's very loving, very playful.
- 6:12Whoopee looks like a delightful dog. She reminds me of my Rodney on the
- 6:16Adventures of Wandola. Perfect sized dog, temperament, looks like an awesome dog.
- 6:25Yeah, I have to make a great family pat as you said,
- 6:28because she appears to be a kid friendly I thought your story about how you
- 6:33came to have her there at the shelter was kind of interesting. She just,
- 6:36basically, from what I was able to ascertain from you, Hannah,
- 6:40Whoopy just showed up on somebody's porch and took up residency and said I live
- 6:46here. Now, that's pretty much what happened right right, Yeah, she's
- 6:50just showed up on somebody's porch and they brought her in. And that was
- 6:56back on the fifth of this month, I believe, so she she hasn't
- 7:00done with us very long. But she is definitely one of the ones that
- 7:03has more like the high endy and we try to push those out so that
- 7:06way, you know, they can get into the home with a yard and
- 7:10they can run around and stuff. But yeah, she did. She just
- 7:12showed up on somebody's porch and she kind of just stayed there and they brought
- 7:15her in. Well, then that's good. And I appreciate those people because
- 7:18a lot of people wouldn't do things like that. You know, they would
- 7:21take them and haul them to somebody else's porch or something like that, or
- 7:25just you know, maybe be mean to them. And I think, hats
- 7:27off to that person that did that. And you said that she's got some
- 7:30hurting tendencies. I guess because of her breed. So she likes to kind
- 7:33of get all people together, I guess, right. She's a great party
- 7:36planner. Yeah, so we've seen it more in dogs versus people, but
- 7:43she's like in the play groups and stuff when she's out with the other dogs
- 7:46playing while they're cleaning their kennel. She tends to try to herd the other
- 7:51dogs into like one little area. So she she's a big family person.
- 7:56Yes, she wants everybody to sit at the table to get Yeah, all
- 8:01right, we'll get back to will be in a couple months. But I
- 8:03always want to talk about some things going on around the shelter. You guys
- 8:05have a promotion going on now, which I think it's great. It's called
- 8:09slumber Potty. That's paw t y. We see what you did there.
- 8:13And with this program, you're encouraging people to foster a pet, just take
- 8:18them into their homes and as you say in your face, it's for a
- 8:20fun time, not for a long time. Tell us about this, and
- 8:24there is, Hannah a proven mental impact on the pets that are taken out
- 8:28of there, if it's just for one night or a weekend. Yes,
- 8:33actually I have seen it multiple times and the three some years that I've been
- 8:39there, every dog that goes out to a foster, well most of every
- 8:43dog that goes out to a foster, they all come back so much more
- 8:48like regally happier. It's a very stressful place at the shelter. I wouldn't
- 8:52necessarily say that it's like a bad place or anything, but it's definitely not
- 8:56a place to crawl a home. It's definitely really amazing to see them go
- 9:05to foster and then come back because whether it's for a day or whether it's
- 9:09for a whole weekend or a whole week or two weeks or something. I
- 9:13know we've had somebody take a dog on a vacation with them before, so
- 9:16it is definitely a time and it kind of gives them a mental break.
- 9:20They don't have to stress. They can sleep on a couch or a dogbed
- 9:24or wherever it may be, but it's still less stressful. There's not a
- 9:28million dogs barking, so it's definitely worth it. You get to take some
- 9:33pictures of them. You can even post them on your social media and tell
- 9:37them a little bit about the time like that you've had them and explain a
- 9:41little bit about them and try to help us get them adopted. Like we
- 9:45said, even if it's just for one night, it definitely has such a
- 9:48positive impact. It does. It does. I want to mark this down
- 9:52Monday evening at go Mark Ballpark of course, that's one of the many highlights
- 9:54that the Christmas season here and Charleston has been the Selango Law Light the Night
- 9:58and they Ristmas display over at Go Mark Ballpark this Monday evening. It's lights
- 10:03and leashes where you're encouraged to bring your pets to the ballpark to enjoy the
- 10:07lights. Yes, I believe I will be there as well. It is
- 10:13going to be We're going to be bringing some of the shelter dogs down so
- 10:16that way they can kind of get out for a little bit, they can
- 10:20get seen. They'll have their little adopt me stuff on. So if somebody
- 10:24were to be there want to adopt they or more and welcome to But you
- 10:28know, we aren't. Of course, we hope that we have adoptions.
- 10:33We aren't really expecting any because it is a night where people can bring their
- 10:37dogs as well. But it's definitely going to be a great time and we
- 10:41hope that everybody comes out. It's Monday night at the ballpark and I want
- 10:45to throw this out here, Hannah. We're a weekend, a couple of
- 10:46days away from Christmas, and if you're, like a lot of people,
- 10:50still looking for Christmas gifts for someone, how about making a donation, whether
- 10:56it's cash or in the form of the donation of food, blankets, whatever.
- 10:58Your guys are always in need of something up there, make a donation
- 11:03in someone's name to the Canal Charleston Humane Association. I'm sure you have seen
- 11:07things like that happen in the past. Yes, yes, I've seen people
- 11:11donate, you know, all the physical things, and I donate cash,
- 11:18and people donate just a wide range of things, even if you just bring
- 11:22in a bag of blankets or something. And like you said, you could
- 11:26donate in someone's name, whether it's an animal or even a person. You
- 11:28could just donate in memory of someone, or you could come in and sponsor
- 11:31a dog. That definitely helps as well. So every every little bit helps.
- 11:37Indeed, all right, Hannah, before we let you go, I've
- 11:39got a request to make a view. Next Friday is what's become a Christmas
- 11:45Time tradition here on the show. I bring in Mike Pushkin, who sets
- 11:48aside his title of House of Delegates member and State Democratic Party chair. It's
- 11:52not political. Mike comes in, brings his guitar and we just have a
- 11:58big old holiday party. And it's something that I started lovingly calling the Jewish
- 12:03Christmas Spectacular, Storry, Mike Pushkin and me. Now Mike is the singer
- 12:09of the Guitar Player. I am neither, okay, I realize, Hannah,
- 12:13you're the busiest person in the world. But we would love if you
- 12:16could break away for just a little bit and come on down live to the
- 12:20studio next week. You don't need to bring a pet with you necessarily.
- 12:24We'll still do the segment like we always do, but we're going to have
- 12:26kind of a big party. And here I've got people from other stations that
- 12:30are coming in. The always lovely and talented Kate Boytech, who you talk
- 12:33to when she guest hosted, is going to be in studio with Mike and
- 12:37I next week. So if your schedule allows, Han, I know you're
- 12:41very busy, we'd love to have you in studio for the Mike Pushkin Dave
- 12:45Allen Jewish Christmas Spectacular next week. Awesome, all right, all right,
- 12:50sounds good, Hannah. I appreciate you and we'll talk again soon. Thanks
- 12:54a lot, Thanks Hannah, Good luck all right, Hannah Gardner again from
- 12:58the Canal charlest Jumaanussociation. Whoopy Danny one years old not fixed shep but will
- 13:03be does well with other playful dogs. Likes to heard them by nature.
- 13:07Other dogs. Came in as a strade when she was found on someone's porch.
- 13:11Basically just showed up and said, I'm here, around thirty five pounds,
- 13:16perfect sized dog, plulls a little bit on the leash, but she's
- 13:20young enough that you can kind of work through that. Just sound, loves
- 13:22people, loves kids. Seems like it would just be the ideal dog for
- 13:26somebody. Danny, I love this story. Rehised me again of Rodney.
- 13:31My first children's book was The co Stars Rodney the Dog And you have time
- 13:37for a story, It's your time, man. No, I had a
- 13:41dog talk once heard a dog talk crazy. It's only happened one time.
- 13:48But I at first moved to Charleston, and I had summers off and I
- 13:52was staying in Lake Cheweava and my wife at the time, her dog Smoky,
- 13:56would come and stay with me. And I was pretty lazy and I
- 14:01would sleep late each day. And one morning I woke up and looked over
- 14:03and there smoking was laid out on the floor. And I looked at smoking
- 14:07and said, Smoky, you're a lazy dog. That he looked up and
- 14:09said, you're another one talking dogs. Danny. Yeah, that's how smart
- 14:16dogs are. Man. Okay, all right, that's the first story.
- 14:18That's a first of a talking dog. Here on the show, Danny Boyd
- 14:22is my guest those of course, he's an author and he's a filmmaker.
- 14:24We would get a talk to Danny covering up a little bit later on about
- 14:28his career, about how he got here to Charleston, and about all the
- 14:31things he's done what he's continuing to do, especially in the world of children's
- 14:33books. We're talk to Danny about that a little bit later on. Plus,

- 18:15the show. The days are counting down till Christmas, and we know Eviden's
- 18:21going to be a busy weekend at Capital Market this weekend. What you got?
- 18:23So we are celebrating the last weekend of the holiday village at Capital Market.
- 18:29This has been first two weeks have been incredible. You know. I
- 18:33just want to thank everyone in the community for coming out. This is our
- 18:36first year we've done it and we're uh, you know, we've we've been
- 18:40overwhelmed by by the turnout and this is our last weekend. It's a celebration
- 18:45of you know, not only our local businesses and producers. This weekend.
- 18:49We're you know, each weekend we've been trying to focus on a specific country,
- 18:55and this weekend is France. France. Yeah, so now let me
- 18:57ask Danny, because Danny you're a war traveler. I know, have you
- 19:00been to France? You know I haven't. That's you know, Well you
- 19:03can most this weekend by going by going to Capital Market. We we way,
- 19:08go ahead, I interrupted, Danny. No, no, no,
- 19:11I've only been in like the developing nations of of but never been to France.
- 19:17Well, you know this is the next best thing. If you can't
- 19:21make it, so well, what can people expect if they want to go
- 19:23to France via Capital Market this weekend? We're we're doubling down on our food
- 19:29efforts this weekend. Our folks are our indoor tenants, Johnny's Meat Market and
- 19:34me a Cup of are preparing some some specially curated items for the weekend,
- 19:41things from Croke, Madam Crok. Sure we're doing rock Clette, which is
- 19:45the best sort of melted cheese dish that I think. Okay, well you
- 19:52had me. I had a feeling. I had no idea what you talked
- 19:56about. But as soon as you said melted cheese, I'm like, I'm
- 19:57in You're lovely, yes, the love language of melt a chief. Where
- 20:03did this whole idea come from to do a because you pretty much done like
- 20:06I guess, a different different nation, different part. We can talk about
- 20:10that. So we we partnered with the fine folks at Festival to really one
- 20:17kind of meet the demand for some marketplace to showcase regional artists and producers and
- 20:22local, local, local vendors and things like that. So it was kind
- 20:27of born out of we wanted to do a holiday celebration and then really to
- 20:33just kind of piggyback off the efforts of the Downtown Charleston Association with Holly Jolly
- 20:40Brawley and Light the Night Over at the Ballpark. It's been so much fun
- 20:48to see the past really, I guess probably three or four years now to
- 20:52see this shift in holiday spirit, particularly coming out of COVID, and it
- 20:57was like, it's so fun to see everyone back out in the community really
- 21:04getting amped up for the holiday season. And this was an effort on our
- 21:10part to really make sure that we're reminding, you know, so much of
- 21:15Christmas is you know, materialistic and full of you know, the big box
- 21:18stores and stuff, and we want to make sure that we always remind our
- 21:22community that, you know, we're home to to some great local businesses,
- 21:26small producers, local farmers, and and they've the community has really come through
- 21:30in a big way this year. And then finally, you know, what
- 21:36we do is really uh, you know, volunteer driven. So we've had
- 21:38a great group of supporters that have really stepped up to help decorate and help
- 21:45man our our our booths for all of the weekend village stuff. Yeah,
- 21:48it's and it's been The response has just been great so far. I mean,
- 21:52I see a lot of the pictures that people have taken time to post
- 21:55on social media. You guys do a great job with social media. It
- 21:57seems like everybody's had a really good time out there. Absolutely, And then,
- 22:00you know, but we're not done with that. Then this coming Tuesday,
- 22:04we have something that we have never done before and I'm extremely excited about,
- 22:08and that is our Snapstretch Holiday meal box. We're partnering with West Virginia
- 22:15Food and Farm Coalition and Mims Ruby's Community grocery store that's soon to be open
- 22:21over on the West Side to provide a complete holiday meal for Snapstretch recipient's for
- 22:27thirty dollars and we're going to source everything in the box from local vendors from
- 22:34all the ham and turkeys will be provided through Johnny's Meat Market. We're working
- 22:40with the Purple Onion and Gritz Farm to source all of the produce. All
- 22:44of the pies that are in the box are coming from spring Hill Bakery.
- 22:48It's really just it's been really fun to assemble all of these holiday items and
- 22:53give folks that may not have access to some of this product otherwise to that.
- 23:00And so from ten to six pm you can come by the market for
- 23:03thirty dollars off your snaps, off your EBT card. A family can receive
- 23:08a complete holiday meal. And that's awesome. This is one of the great
- 23:11things and Danny, I know you being a long time a resident of the
- 23:15area as well. This is one of the great things about Capital Market giving
- 23:18back to the community. But also because I'm the ultimate capitalist, you know,
- 23:23helping out these local businesses, these local businesses and West Side Man,
- 23:30that's awesome. So to that end, we're going to be partnering with the
- 23:33fine folks at Kart to offer a shuttle over to the market from the West
- 23:37side. So you can pick up the shuttle at seven thirty nine Central Avenue.
- 23:41It'll bring you directly over to the market, will help get your box
- 23:45loaded up, and you'll have the opportunity to pick a lot of the products,
- 23:49like if you want a ham, you want a turkey, you want
- 23:51an apple pie, you want a Jerry pie. So where where is that
- 23:53on the West Side? I live there. It's seven thirty nine Central Avenue.
- 23:57Oh that's right down me. I think Danny's Tuesday calendar just filled up.
- 24:03Oh yeah, And transportation on the West Side is so important. Absolutely,
- 24:07yeah, cool thing, EVN, I got a text here for you.
- 24:11Okay. So Dave asked Eva about the reunion of his uncle's band next
- 24:15week, Brian Diller and The Ride. Wow, So, I I like
- 24:21to live off the coattails of my uncle's former glory and a lot of people
- 24:25don't know that my uncle is, in fact Brian Dillar of Brian Dillar in
- 24:27the Ride. He was I'm just going to say it, I guess the
- 24:32family rock star and literally yeah. So on Friday, December twenty ninth,
- 24:40which is also his weekend birthday, he'll be doing a reunion concert with the
- 24:44ride at the Rock. Okay, cool with this new album. Brian Diller
- 24:48is good friend of mine, married to Liska Diller or a Liska Han who
- 24:52I know. As so it was a small West Virginia. You got West
- 24:56Virginia. You gotta love it. You gotta love it. Yep. And
- 24:59where in is that concert that is Friday, December twenty ninth at the Rock
- 25:03on Quarter Shirt. It's the former Quarter Diner. Okay, it's just right

- 25:36Evan, what will be what's going to be new at Capital Market.
- 25:38What are you particularly excited about going into the twenty twenty four at Capital Market.
- 25:42So in October we made an announcement that we're endeavoring to basically construct a
- 25:48rooftop solar right for the that will more or less make the market fully electric
- 25:56sufficient. So we're we're going to be getting the initial phases of that project,
- 26:02so we hope to have that completed in twenty twenty four. Additionally,
- 26:07we're doubling down on our farmer recruitment efforts. We hope to expand some of
- 26:12the number of local producers. It's really tough in West Virginia because of the
- 26:18terrain, so it's tough to get started as a family farm, and we
- 26:22want to remain a place to really help agriculture blossom. And then finally,
- 26:26for the first time in ten years, we're gonna have a new tenant inside
- 26:30a new tenant. Yeah, are you at liberty to discuss? Honestly,
- 26:33I don't know who will be at this point. Probably it's Danny Boyd's theater
- 26:41library and pro wrestling museums. I will say that when Fresh Seafood announced their
- 26:48retirement earlier this year, we put a form up on our website, So
- 26:52anybody that might be potentially interested in that space, if you go to the
- 26:56merchant Opportunities page on the Capital Market dot Net, you can fill out the
- 27:02form and probably starting in mid January, myself and our board of directors will
- 27:07begin to evaluate what what some of those submissions are and then we probably realistically
- 27:15will looking we'll be looking to bring a new tenant open right with writ in
- 27:18conjunction with the beginning of the spring season. So it's it's gonna be twenty
- 27:22twenty four is going to be very very exciting, indeed it is. And
- 27:26where can people learn more about anything going on? Because I mean I can
- 27:29have you on, you know, like every day to talk about the difference
- 27:30that's going on to Capitol Market, But where can people go and learn for
- 27:33themselves, maybe do some planning ahad for some of the things a Capital Market
- 27:36dot Net and your social media. You just killed on the social media stuff
- 27:40too, me. You do a really good job on that. And then
- 27:41finally, you want to give a shout out to we had a vendor celebrate
- 27:45their twentieth anniversary yesterday and that was a purple onion. Okay, so nice,
- 27:49Yeah, I mean, we're all fans of Capital Market. It's one
- 27:52of the hit and I'll tell you every time you're on the show. It
- 27:53is a hidden gym. And I know people that when they it's not actually
- 27:57hidden, I shouldn't say. It's one of the premier things in Charleston.
- 28:00And I say this because anytime that you come to Charleston, if you're doing
- 28:04business here or whatever, and somebody you know, they go down to the
- 28:07front desk of the hotel and say, Okay, where should I go?
- 28:10Where should I have dinner? Where should I go hang out? They always
- 28:12say. And I've had people tell me this on travel to Charles and they
- 28:15always say, you have to go to Capitol Market while you're here. There's
- 28:18got plenty of dining places here in Charleston and the surrounding area seat, but
- 28:23at some point you got to make it the Capital Market for the agriculture stuff,
- 28:26for the wine, for the cheese, for whatever. To that end,
- 28:30if you need a last minute holiday gift, we're close Christmas Eve on
- 28:33the twenty fourth. We will be open on the twenty fourth or on the
- 28:37twenty third. Rather pop in. There is no better place in Charleston pick
- 28:41up a last. Yeah, and I'm sure all the vendors have gift cards
- 28:44and things like that too. All right, Evan, I appreciate you being

- 33:19not parts unknown like a lot of the bad guy wrestlers we grew up watching
- 33:22with. Where are you from, Danny, I'm from Martinsburg. I'm from
- 33:25the eastern panhandling. I thought you and I were good friends, so I
- 33:30found out you were a Cowboys fan. As long as we've been friends,
- 33:34how could you not know I'm a Cowboys fan. I mean it's like everything
- 33:37you know, It's like everything about me is Dallas could block trauma out of
- 33:40your life. See, so when I was listening to you last week,
- 33:45I was reminded, But dude, are you geographically challenged? Now? I'm
- 33:50just an hour away from my hometown. Yeah. Well, but you know,
- 33:54Dallas is more than it's the star man, It's the star, It's
- 34:00the it's the it's the whole mystique of the Cowboys and the man in the
- 34:02hat install back of Door set and all those guys and later Emmett and Troy
- 34:07and Jimmy Johnson and you know, you know, I'm too far into this
- 34:12thing. Man. I've been a fan for like, you know, fifty
- 34:14years or so. There's there's I'm too far into it now. It was
- 34:17all propaganda and wonderful propaganda on their part, the America's team and all of
- 34:22that, you know, like the Braves all of your generations, like the
- 34:28American team. Uh. But you know, I have to say that we've
- 34:31had rough years with Washington of late, but the winningest team in the NFL
- 34:37in the eighties. Yeah. No, I mean, that's all I can
- 34:40say is I can just go with the facts because I can't say anything because
- 34:43I'm a Dallas fan. If you expect me to say anything good about Washington,
- 34:46the Giants or the Eagles marking up the wrong tree their pal At what
- 34:50point did you start showing an interest in entertainment and such as a young man
- 34:53growing up in Martinsburg as as as a kid, my my my parents would
- 34:59take me to the Apollo Theater and back then they could do that and just
- 35:01drop me off on Saturdays and I'd spend all day. I even made friends
- 35:07with the projections there and he would teach me how to work the projection there,
- 35:12and I just fell in love with movies, never imagining a hoopie boy
- 35:17from outside of Martinsburg could get into that business. But I had the passion
- 35:23for it, and somehow, you know, my greatest dream was to be
- 35:28a DJ. I mean where you started. And I finally had my opportunity,
- 35:32and I was so horrible. I was so horrible. No, you
- 35:37never were, you were always good. But uh, any anyway, so
- 35:42I went to wv U and I I couldn't get into the journalism school,
- 35:49so I was in the communications and they had a couple media classes. And
- 35:54then I met all the guys at w w W w v U t V
- 35:59and had work study job there. Uh and that and that and that long
- 36:05story here, but but but but that's that's that's how my entertainment career started.
- 36:09And and so you went into films, you know, and you talk
- 36:13about some of the films that you've done, well, thirty some movies,
- 36:15so a lot of a lot of them. First was Homeless Brother, where
- 36:22I took off and road freight trains and made a documentary about the contemporary hobo
- 36:30in West Virginia. A bunch of made one in Guatemala during the Civil War.
- 36:37Marcos Day Saint Marcus with my neighbor from Morgantown College Avenue. Uh,
- 36:44you know, to make a movie about about peaceful peace Corps worker but in
- 36:49the middle of a civil war, uh, which was not a very good
- 36:53idea. And you actually, we might should people understand this. You actually
- 36:58filmed that. You didn't go to a holly what's set to do that?
- 37:00You actually filmed it there in the middle of the Civil war. Brought it
- 37:05on my on my pack, came across the border against uh what you were
- 37:13allowed to do? This really really not wise things. But it was a
- 37:17good movie. Yeah. Uh. And only you could get Dusty Rhodes and
- 37:25Porter Wagner together in a film. Talk about that, well, man,
- 37:31Dave, I don't think I've ever told you this, but but I really
- 37:35did not like pro wrestling. I mean I was a good amateur wrestler and
- 37:39I thought, wow, you know, this is so phony. And then
- 37:44I went to graduate school with the University of Arkansas, and I was so
- 37:47poor. I had this little nine inch black and white TV and only got
- 37:51two or three channels, so you know, it was either PTL or Georgia
- 37:55Championship Wrestling. So you know, I started watching, you know, Georgia
- 38:01Championship Wrestling, Dusty Rhodes, a Rick Flair, all those. I could
- 38:07do this all day. Ultimately did a show with them. They're they're in
- 38:12Williamson. But it finally struck me. It's like, this is not about
- 38:17reality. This is this is more the feel of it. It's it's sort
- 38:22of like how I love opera. It's you know, facts aren't important,
- 38:27you know, what is the entertainment value. And I'm you know, been
- 38:31a huge fan since and of course Dusty was was was you know always I
- 38:36wanted Dusty from the time I knew who he was and kept trying to get
- 38:40him, and finally he had a falling out with Vince with WWE and a
- 38:45window opened where he would be available, and that's how we got him for
- 38:50Paradise Park. I will say this, and I'm going to spend the time
- 38:52talking about wrestling, but I'm an old school wrestling fan. I quit watching
- 38:55in the early nineties. I couldn't tell you anything that's happened since then.
- 38:59I don't. Every now and then I'll flip it on. I'm like,
- 39:00okay, this is why I don't watch this sports entertainment because this is not
- 39:05what I grew up watching. I'm not a fan, but I will say
- 39:07this, Dusty Rhodes was the greatest entertainer in the history of the business.
- 39:13I will put him up against anybody. Yeah, people are going to say,
- 39:15well, you know Flair and I'm a big I'm a big Rick Flair
- 39:17Mark. But as far as entertainers and people that could captivate an audience,
- 39:24nobody, nobody could do it, like The American Dream Dusty Roads. Good.
- 39:30Well, if I can tell you a short story about Dusty and again,
- 39:35The Paradise Park is on Amazon Prime so you can see it. It's
- 39:37been restored and remastered. It's really a lovely print of it. But we
- 39:43spent a lot of time making that movie. And I would pick him up
- 39:46and we would come back and forth from sut and he one time he said
- 39:52to me, you know, first of all, he said, I really
- 39:53want to pick your brand. I really want to get it in. I
- 39:55thinking, man, I'm so flatter. The American Dream wants to pick my
- 40:00brain. But we were I remember we were talking and he started I thought,
- 40:05almost like making excuses for The American Dream, and he said, look,
- 40:09you know, it's more than a gimmick. It's it's like, you
- 40:14know, it really means something to people. And I said, Dusty stop,
- 40:19you are the American dream. Matt own it, you are the American
- 40:22dream. And you've given us all great inspiration. Yeah and uh and you
- 40:28know the fact that he did not have the body of you know, the
- 40:30temporary guys of the day. He was a big fat guy that drank beer
- 40:35and went out there and uh and kicked a lot of button sold out arenas.
- 40:37And I mean was uh I mean on stage with Willie Nelson. I
- 40:42mean he he transcended that old thing. Man. It's let's get a wee
- 40:45can talk wrestling all all that. I do want to tell a quick story
- 40:51though, about you and I being in doing a wrestling show in Boone County,
- 40:57West Virginia and in the community of Jeffrey. It was in Jeffrey.
- 41:00What it was there was a elementary school reached out to me. I was
- 41:05doing a lot of ring announcing at the time and said, hey, we'd
- 41:07like to have a wrestling show here. You were like doing the wrestling the
- 41:10manager thing at that point. No, no, I was working with Grace
- 41:14Wrath, Bill Bill Vitner, and I that's right, that's working at the
- 41:16time was around we worked it and it was death talk and zero me as
- 41:22Professor Danger and Shane Storm. Yes, all right, so the three of
- 41:27you, that's right, you're right. You get on the microphone and I'm
- 41:31interviewing you and you and Shane Storm and uh uh and Bill start cutting this
- 41:37promo as we called it in the business about coal miners, talking about uh
- 41:43uh, you know, we're gonna end coal mining all together, and uh
- 41:46what a nasty thing it is. And and this was, you know,
- 41:51when the the the war on coal was now prefaces. We were super heel
- 41:57at the time, but you were the bad guest. I thought, I've
- 42:00been in the I was in the wrestling business for thirty years. I thought
- 42:04that night that we were going to have to fight our way out of the
- 42:07building. I really did. And Dave don't fight, you know, so
- 42:09I thought it was I mean, because the people were taking it so seriously
- 42:15and it was just part and even a couple of good people that I knew,
- 42:19I had to say, it's part of the show. No one of
- 42:22the show. You actually didn't. I don't remember that. But it was
- 42:24one of the few times that I was actually nervous in my two hundred plus
- 42:30matches, and we always got great heat. I mean, Bill and I
- 42:35would always always say, you know, we would get heat within the first
- 42:38thirty seconds if people knew who we were or not. But it was Shane
- 42:42that kept railing yet. And you remember that tight little venue we're in that
- 42:46I remember that it was a great school gym. And the coal miners walked
- 42:50around the ring there, Yeah, and still still in their coal mining gear.
- 42:55Yeah, literally this yeah, and man they were and I was nervous
- 43:01and I'm and cautiously. He eased up to one and Shane didn't stop.
- 43:07Eased up to one of them and just kind of whisper. You know,
- 43:08this is the work and it's a part of the show. And he looked
- 43:12at me, he said, I know, that's the beauty of progressing with
- 43:17good stuff. All right, I'll tell you what we're gonna were gonna take
- 43:21a break because we're gonna do ten questions, and I want to get into

- 48:12Charleston. All right, let's talk about this author thing. Now pro wrestling
- 48:15filmmaker, now radio television. Now you're an author and you got a whole
- 48:22smart Smorgar books in here this morning. Talk about how you got into this
- 48:25well, Dave, First of all, it's like a one to eighty for
- 48:28me. I mean, you know me from Horror and by the way,
- 48:30I want to do a pitch for chillers. The movie That Keeps Giving for
- 48:34Me came out in nineteen eighty uh and now Trauma has licensed it to a
- 48:39company called Terror Vision that's doing the blu ray of it, and we're doing
- 48:45the extras now. It's coming out in January. So again the gift that
- 48:50keeps on giving. But I when I got decided to get away from feature
- 48:55filmmaking, it was like, I still have idea, and I realized it's
- 49:00not about the medium, It's about it's about the message and of my later
- 49:06years. Again, I live on the West Side, and I just loved
- 49:09my neighborhood. And we started a garden club there thirteen years ago, started
- 49:15starting with uh uh, two four year old twins, and we have been
- 49:22doing it ever since. And now we have many kids to come. And
- 49:24people always give me books to give to the kids, and I think,
- 49:28well, I better read them, and I started reading them, and I'm
- 49:30thinking these are really good. So that that's how I did the one eighty
- 49:36two uh from horror to children's books. All right, well, and what
- 49:39kind of tell us about the books? What do you get? Well,
- 49:42I've got they're all middle they're they're they're with headline books. Uh, but
- 49:46they're all available on Amazon, by the way. Uh. But the Adventures
- 49:52of Wandola, which was inspirable when my girls were young to not fear the
- 49:55outside world. Speaking of the Garden Club, Mister Turtle's Garden Club, which
- 50:00is very much inspired by the families on the West Side and what they deal
- 50:06with. Tav's First Hunt, which was inspired by my late dad taking me
- 50:12hunting every year into our cabin that's still until his passing in Morgan County.
- 50:19And Wrestled Dream You, which you kind of helped me with that's sort of
- 50:23inspired by I'm not in the book, but many of the people that we
- 50:28know that were wrestlers in it. And again, these are all stories of
- 50:32hope, but they're always about young people with struggles, as we well know
- 50:38living in West Virginia. And what is your writing style? And I say
- 50:45this anytime I have an author in here. Are you a person that sits
- 50:46down pen and paper, computer or whatever and says, Okay, I'm going
- 50:50to write for two hours on Tuesday. Do you just keep something with you
- 50:52to write down ideas? Do you have a particular style? I do,
- 50:58And because I was a screenwriter and people that just sort of they're called panthers
- 51:01that they just sort of write on the whim. That was never me.
- 51:06I'm an outline guy and I always wrote to It's like in your business as
- 51:10well, you write the time, But no, I've never written at night.
- 51:16I'm up, I have a cup of coffee, I start writing two
- 51:21to four, maybe four and a half hours. I'm sorrying to face and
- 51:23I'm done. That's it. That true style, tex, says David.
- 51:28Another accolade on Danny Boyd's resume is he has been a college professor and mentor
- 51:31to many other filmmakers and artists. Was an honor to study under him at
- 51:36West Virginia State University. Go Yellowjackets, thank you so much. You know,
- 51:38I didn't even get to talk about that. We're almost out of time.
- 51:42I didn't talk about your career as a professor. No, but I'm
- 51:45glad whoever that was brought that up. Is because I loved every second in
- 51:50my thirty three years teaching. But it was time to go. Okay,
- 51:57where can people pick up these books the movies? Just give me a quick
- 52:00get a website. What do you got? Amazon would be best under?
- 52:05I mean, you all know me as Danny. But Daniel Boyd, Daniel
- 52:07Boyd, all right, author, professor, filmmaker. And by the way,
- 52:13Paradise Park is now you said, It's available on what's the streaming service,
- 52:19Amazon Prime? Amazon Prime? All right, so Chase Preachers is on
- 52:22to b all right, all right, there you go, all right,
- 52:24we gotta go, Danny, Daniel, thank you for being here, man,
