Transcript
- 0:08Yeah, thank you for having me.
- 0:11How has the rehearsal process for Spongebob the musical been so far?
- 0:15It's honestly, it's been a roller coaster.
- 0:20We started like December, I think, and then we had two weeks off.
- 0:26So we had like a little bit of time to rehearse and then we two weeks off and then we jumped right back into it.
- 0:32And so it's been fun, like getting the process from start to finish.
- 0:38Well, almost finished for what?
- 0:40Three days?
- 0:41and it's gonna come together perfectly.
- 0:46So were you familiar with SpongeBob prior to being cast in it?
- 0:53Not the show.
- 0:54I had no clue like what happened.
- 0:58I know spongebob But I was like, I don't know the story of this show.
- 1:02I don't know what's gonna happen
- 1:07I mean, so you grew up watching SpongeBob.
- 1:10Yeah, I would like see it and I was like, okay, that's funny, you know.
- 1:16Right.
- 1:17So those who maybe aren't familiar with the show, like you said, you weren't familiar with the show.
- 1:20I wasn't familiar with the show.
- 1:23What is the story of SpongeBob the musical?
- 1:26And then how who are you playing and how does that character factor into the story?
- 1:31Okay, so I play Pearl Krabs.
- 1:34So I am Eugene, Mr.
- 1:35Krabs' daughter.
- 1:38Our cheerleader, we love her.
- 1:40We're taking a little bit of a different take on her on this show.
- 1:46So she'll be fun.
- 1:50But the story of SpongeBob, so we follow SpongeBob.
- 1:54Bikini bottom, everything is perfect for him.
- 1:57Well, all of a sudden, like...
- 2:01There's a rumble rumble rumble and this huge mountain is going to erupt Mount Humongous.
- 2:08So Spongebob has to find a way to make it safe for everyone.
- 2:15you know, there's like Sandy helps him, Patrick helps him along the way, like get to the end and save everyone.
- 2:22There is a happy ending spoiler.
- 2:23then
- 2:26love a happy ending.
- 2:31As far as how I play into it a little bit, so, you know, they have to buy this pod, if you will, to escape.
- 2:41That's Plankton's idea.
- 2:45Well, there's no money for it, so Pearl's like, we can have a concert with her favorite band.
- 2:55So she's like, getting her favorite band to come and play and...
- 3:00She's like trying to get in the band and I don't want to give away everything.
- 3:06She's just like, she inserts her ideas, let's just say that, and she gets her ways.
- 3:13Somehow, at the end of the day.
- 3:15all of this happening while a volcano is getting ready to explode.
- 3:19literally over bikini bottom
- 3:23As I was talking with Elijah earlier about this, that seems kind of dark for such a hilarious show.
- 3:30Right?
- 3:32How does SpongeBob the musical balance the tones?
- 3:35So I think it's like there is a deeper, serious meaning to it, but everything is so silly.
- 3:43Like, it's SpongeBob.
- 3:45It's silly, it's a joke.
- 3:47Like, a yellow sponge is gonna save us, are you kidding me?
- 3:52So I think it's just like, there is a deeper meaning to it if you really look into it, but everything is so silly and everything is so lighthearted.
- 4:01So I think the silliness just like...
- 4:04stuffs the serious down.
- 4:08So this music is very eclectic.
- 4:11There's a lot of different artists who came into making this music and to developing it.
- 4:16How do you feel like the music enhances the story of SpongeBob the musical and the adventures that he goes on with his friends?
- 4:21So obviously I didn't know the show when I auditioned for it.
- 4:25And I didn't know that it was made by a bunch of different people.
- 4:30Like each song is created or helped created by someone new.
- 4:37So there's like, Brendan Urie, there's so many more, I can't think of any right now.
- 4:45But there's a lot, so there's a bunch of different like.
- 4:50just different tastes and flavors to it.
- 4:55So I think you get to go on this journey of like, like that's fun.
- 5:00Like there's some rock songs in there, but there was also some like hip hop and it's just really fun.
- 5:06It's like each character has their own genre and I love that.
- 5:10What's the genre of Pearl if you can tell me
- 5:14She is very like...
- 5:17alternative rock, I guess, like pop.
- 5:22She just wants to sing.
- 5:23She just wants to sing.
- 5:26very much like Kylie.
- 5:28I know, I'm like, if there was not a perfect character, like, that's literally me.
- 5:33So for those who are watching this, Kylie and I are friends.
- 5:38And she sings wherever she goes.
- 5:41And it's beautiful all the time.
- 5:43But like, so it makes sense that you'd be playing a character that just wants to sing and be engaged in the art.
- 5:49wants to be validated, like that's me.
- 5:52Okay.
- 5:54Um, not the validation part, but you, you, you get such a joy out of singing and out of, out of adding your voice to something special.
- 6:02You know, we got to see you in Beauty and the beast.
- 6:05Um, and we're going to get to see you in shows coming up too.
- 6:08I don't know if we're not yet, so I'm not going to say it, um, okay.
- 6:13You're going to be in Seussical the musical.
- 6:15am, Seussical .
- 6:16So, I mean, there's a part of you that does love, not the validation maybe, but the performing and being a part of something bigger.
- 6:24And so like that is part of you that's in Pearl.
- 6:26Yeah, I love that.
- 6:29has this role challenged you as an actor?
- 6:33so typically Pearl is a teenager.
- 6:38I'm not a teenager.
- 6:42So I think just like allowing my silly playful side to come out a little bit more.
- 6:50I'm like, but dad!
- 6:53Just allowing that version to come out of me a little bit more and not being so serious about it.
- 6:59Like this is not a serious show.
- 7:01I can be silly and fun and just smile.
- 7:06So I that's been the hardest part for Pearl.
- 7:11Okay.
- 7:13What's been the highlight of your time on this production?
- 7:16meeting all these lovely people.
- 7:19Okay.
- 7:23You always make friends when you do a show, but I'm like rekindling friendships from like old shows with other people and I'm like meeting new people and so I think that's the
- 7:37biggest part about community theater is just the friendships that you create along the way.
- 7:44Okay, I love that.
- 7:47How do you get into the mindset of Pearl?
- 7:50Like, what do you have to do?
- 7:50Do you have to do anything specific?
- 7:53Honestly, I watch TikTok.
- 7:57I watch, like, Get Ready With Me's because I feel like that's Pearl.
- 8:05Like, she is younger, she is...
- 8:10She just wants to sing.
- 8:11Like, she doesn't have a care in the world.
- 8:12She wants to go shopping.
- 8:13That's what she wants to do.
- 8:15She wants to go shopping.
- 8:17And so I'll scroll, like, just mindlessly for a little bit.
- 8:22I don't know if I do anything else crazy.
- 8:25I get a little bit of an attitude.
- 8:27Just, like, bring her out, and then I step her back down.
- 8:30Right, you gotta pull it out a little bit and then boom, you know?
- 8:34there.
- 8:34She's just a little hint of her, you know, a little bit.
- 8:40So have you got to try on the costume yet?
- 8:41I know you're like days away, so.
- 8:43I have, um, it is crazy.
- 8:51It's very colorful.
- 8:55Um, I don't know if I can give you everything.
- 8:58Like, it's colorful.
- 9:00It has my favorite color.
- 9:03It's sparkly.
- 9:04It's fun.
- 9:05What was that like putting that on for the first time?
- 9:08It wasn't what I expected, so I've seen pictures of what Pearl wore for the Broadway shows.
- 9:19And when I first put mine on, I was like, is this who I am?
- 9:22was like, do I just want to wear this every day?
- 9:27I'm so excited to see you in it, because I just know you're...
- 9:30That's like becoming part of that character, know?
- 9:32Like slipping into their skin.
- 9:34It's like there's a hair piece, there's rhinestones.
- 9:39She's fun.
- 9:41I love that.
- 9:42love that.
- 9:44What themes from Spongebob the musical resonate the most with you?
- 9:53I mean the first one I can think of is friendship.
- 9:58there's this song called BFF, Best Friends Forever.
- 10:05I love my friends deeply.
- 10:10Yeah.
- 10:11Okay.
- 10:15I love that.
- 10:15I'm like, that's, well you probably hear my dog at this point, sorry.
- 10:19It's okay, you're good.
- 10:22So friendship.
- 10:23the friendships that you make along the way and yeah, I think that's a bigger part of the story is friendship and how you can go and you can fight but you can always come back
- 10:36together too.
- 10:39Okay, okay.
- 10:41Final question for you is, what are you hoping audiences take away from this musical?
- 10:48to not take life so serious.
- 10:51Like, yeah, there can be some pretty serious things going on in your personal life, but you'll always have your friends and you'll always have your family.
- 11:02Like, know, Eugene Krabs is my father.
- 11:04You'll always have your friends, you'll always have your family, and you can always just look at the sky or look at the sun and just, it'll be fine.
- 11:13Everything's gonna be fine, I promise.
- 11:16Everything is going to be fine.
- 11:17While it's another water show, it just keeps swimming.
- 11:21There's always positives to life.
- 11:23Just keep swimming.
- 11:26Exactly.
- 11:28Thank you so much for your time today, Kylie.
- 11:30It's always a pleasure talking and hanging out with you.
- 11:33Thank you so much, I appreciate you.
