- 0:00Speaker 1: Today, the Trump administration is making its next move in
- 0:03Speaker 1: the ongoing legal fight over the Kennedy Center. In a
- 0:06Speaker 1: new court filing, the head of the performing arts venue
- 0:08Speaker 1: said the historic building will be closed for at least
- 0:11Speaker 1: a week because of, quote, structural deterioration. We should note
- 0:14Speaker 1: Congress has allocated roughly $ 250 million to renovate the center,
- 0:19Speaker 1: which is a memorial to President John F.
- 0:20Speaker 2: Kennedy.
- 0:21Speaker 1: But President Trump says it's going to cost more, and
- 0:24Speaker 1: he's been adamant that he wants his name added to
- 0:27Speaker 1: the building.
- 0:30Speaker 3: For the Trump administration, for me, to get involved and
- 0:34Speaker 3: to take that on long term and to carry it
- 0:37Speaker 3: or to raise money to carry it, I think that
- 0:40Speaker 3: the Trump administration should certainly have recognition. Because frankly, if
- 0:45Speaker 3: we don't do that, it's going to close. It'll end
- 0:48Speaker 3: up being ripped down. It's in very, very bad shape.
- 0:51Speaker 1: The president issuing that warning just hours before this photo
- 0:55Speaker 1: of him on Air Force One, where he appears to
- 0:57Speaker 1: be looking at a poster with the words Kennedy Center demolished.
- 1:02Speaker 1: CNN's Kristen Holmes live for us from the White House
- 1:04Speaker 1: on this story. And Kristen, I know we're getting some
- 1:06Speaker 1: breaking news now.
- 1:07Speaker 4: A judge with a new order.
- 1:09Speaker 1: What are we hearing?
- 1:10Speaker 5: Yes.
- 1:11Speaker 2: And this is likely to at least make some of
- 1:15Speaker 2: the critics who are concerned about President Trump using the
- 1:18Speaker 2: seven day period to completely demolish the Kennedy Center feel
- 1:22Speaker 2: slightly better. And this is the filing we have here
- 1:25Speaker 2: from Judge Cooper says this, that the Kennedy Center must
- 1:29Speaker 2: provide at least 30 days notice in advance if a
- 1:33Speaker 2: demolition or new construction at the historic cultural center is planned.
- 1:39Speaker 2: So he also is asking for more information on this
- 1:42Speaker 2: closure for seven days, which the Kennedy Center, the administration
- 1:46Speaker 2: is saying is necessary for safety. But this is a
- 1:48Speaker 2: big part of where the concern was, that they would
- 1:52Speaker 2: close it down for seven days and then President Trump
- 1:55Speaker 2: or the administration or the Kennedy Center would completely demolish
- 1:59Speaker 2: the building, which would basically render everything that these legal
- 2:04Speaker 2: actions moot. You would have a new set of legal actions.
- 2:08Speaker 2: And that's exactly what they were trying to prevent against. Now,
- 2:11Speaker 2: we also have another update that just came in a
- 2:14Speaker 2: few seconds ago. And this was a response to what
- 2:17Speaker 2: President Trump was looking at on the plane. It doesn't
- 2:21Speaker 2: seem to fully answer it, but it does say that
- 2:25Speaker 2: the Kennedy Center would, that President Trump said the Kennedy
- 2:28Speaker 2: Center will eventually continue to decline.
- 2:30Speaker 4: It says, for years.
- 2:32Speaker 2: Democrats let the Kennedy Center rot, allowing water damage and
- 2:35Speaker 2: crumbling infrastructure to turn a national treasure into a building
- 2:40Speaker 2: in decay. As President Trump said last night, without his intervention,
- 2:43Speaker 2: the Kennedy Center will.
- 2:45Speaker 4: inevitably continue to decline.
- 2:48Speaker 2: So not exactly duressing these photos, but clearly responding and
- 2:51Speaker 2: not pushing back on the notion that they said Kennedy
- 2:54Speaker 2: Center demolition, and he was clearly going through them. Now,
- 2:58Speaker 2: the other part of all of this is the fact
- 3:01Speaker 2: that it seems as though the big sticking point now
- 3:04Speaker 2: is President Trump getting his name on this building. And
- 3:07Speaker 2: you hear him continuing to threaten to essentially not go
- 3:10Speaker 2: through with the project or knock the building down if
- 3:13Speaker 2: this doesn't happen.
- 3:15Speaker 4: And I do want to play for you.
- 3:17Speaker 2: Now he's saying it's going to cost more than $ 200 million.
- 3:19Speaker 2: What he said back in February when he was asked
- 3:23Speaker 2: about this.
- 3:25Speaker 6: Do you plan on tearing it down? And how much
- 3:28Speaker 6: will all of the renovations cost?
- 3:31Speaker 3: Probably around $ 200 million that were fully financed.
- 3:35Speaker 6: And so we're going to close it.
- 3:36Speaker 3: And we're going to make it unbelievable, far better than
- 3:39Speaker 3: it ever was.
- 3:40Speaker 2: And we'll be able to do it properly. I'm not
- 3:42Speaker 2: ripping it down.
- 3:42Speaker 4: I'll be using the steel. So we're using the structure.
- 3:46Speaker 3: We're using some of the marble and some of the
- 3:48Speaker 3: marble comes down. But when it's open, it'll be brand new.
- 3:51Speaker 4: And really beautiful.
- 3:54Speaker 2: Now, of course, part of the issue here is that
- 3:56Speaker 2: now he is saying that he might rip it down.
- 3:58Speaker 2: He is threatening to do that. But on the other
- 4:00Speaker 2: side of this, if he does rip it down, then
- 4:02Speaker 2: what happens?
- 4:03Speaker 4: Do they rebuild it or.
- 4:04Speaker 2: Does he use this again, putting his name on the
- 4:07Speaker 2: building as leverage to try and really strong arm into
- 4:11Speaker 2: rebuilding the property?
- 4:12Speaker 4: Jonah Goldberg.
- 4:14Speaker 5: We talk about this story so much in the context
- 4:16Speaker 5: of President Trump, his ego, his interest in renovation and
- 4:19Speaker 5: gilding things. I just think it's important that we underscore
- 4:22Speaker 5: that this particular piece of it is about more than that.
- 4:25Speaker 7: Yeah, well, so for me, public funding of arts and
- 4:29Speaker 7: all that kind of stuff makes me on the queasier side.
- 4:32Speaker 7: I think the Kennedy senator is fine and a good thing,
- 4:35Speaker 7: and Trump shouldn't judge it. What bothers me about it
- 4:39Speaker 7: is that this is the most open and shut constitutional argument.
- 4:44Speaker 7: It's like Congress flatly said, the Kennedy Center is for
- 4:49Speaker 7: this and not for something else and not somebody else's name.
- 4:52Speaker 7: It's black letter law. And you just got this guy.
- 4:56Speaker 4: And that's why they did it, right?
- 4:57Speaker 7: And that's why they did it. That was their intent.
- 4:58Speaker 7: And if Congress wanted to change the rules about it,
- 5:01Speaker 7: they could and all that kind of stuff. But instead,
- 5:03Speaker 7: what Trump just did was he packed the board of,
- 5:09Speaker 7: you know, it's sort of like A couple clicks shy
- 5:11Speaker 7: of Caligula pointing his horse to the Roman Senate. But
- 5:15Speaker 7: it's pretty much the same sort of thing.
- 5:17Speaker 4: It's just these.
- 5:17Speaker 7: Yes men and yahoos who go in and.
- 5:20Speaker 4: Say, what are you?
- 5:20Speaker 7: And then he gets to say, oh, this is what
- 5:22Speaker 7: they wanted to do when it's obvious that it was
- 5:24Speaker 7: all set up from the first place. And the idea
- 5:26Speaker 7: that he's presenting the American people in Congress and the
- 5:29Speaker 7: courts with this choice of destroy this thing. Or let
- 5:32Speaker 7: me have my name on it. It's a weird strategy
- 5:35Speaker 7: right before the midterms, I'll tell you. There's that, of course.
- 5:38Speaker 4: Ana Navarro, I mean, I want.
- 5:40Speaker 5: To read you what Maria Shriver, of course, a member
- 5:43Speaker 5: of the Kennedy family, had to say about the president's
- 5:46Speaker 5: most recent statement about the Kennedy Center.
- 5:48Speaker 4: She says this.
- 5:48Speaker 5: This statement from Trump blows my mind that a sitting
- 5:51Speaker 5: president would not let any renovations to a public building
- 5:54Speaker 5: go on unless he gets to first put his name
- 5:56Speaker 5: in the said building.
- 5:57Speaker 4: What a sad state of affairs. What a tragedy.
- 6:00Speaker 5: Actually, how small-minded, how narcissistic. Actually great men devoted to
- 6:05Speaker 5: public service and the public good do not act like this.
- 6:09Speaker 7: Ana.
- 6:12Speaker 6: Yeah, endorse, fully endorse every word that Maria Shriver just said.
- 6:18Speaker 6: I think it talks to Donald Trump's smallness, the frailty
- 6:23Speaker 6: of his ego, and just also his insanity, right? But look,
- 6:27Speaker 6: if Donald Trump is on Air Force One looking at
- 6:30Speaker 6: a giant poster that says Kennedy Center demolition, he obviously
- 6:35Speaker 6: wants the press to notice. He obviously wants us to
- 6:38Speaker 6: be talking about it. But as insane as it may seem,
- 6:42Speaker 6: the thing is that with Donald Trump, you cannot pretend
- 6:45Speaker 6: that the insanity cannot become reality. Because we saw it
- 6:49Speaker 6: with the East Wing. We saw it with the reflecting pool.
- 6:52Speaker 6: We've seen it with Jackie Kennedy's Rose Garden. There is
- 6:56Speaker 6: nothing that he loves more than to demolish and destroy
- 6:59Speaker 6: anything that has Kennedy-esque characteristics to it. But I also
- 7:06Speaker 6: want us to remember that not too long ago, the
- 7:09Speaker 6: Kennedy Center had a functioning board chaired by David Rubenstein. You,
- 7:14Speaker 6: of course, Casey, know and love him because he is
- 7:17Speaker 6: the owner of your beloved Baltimore Orioles. There was a
- 7:22Speaker 6: lot of private funding that went into the keep up
- 7:25Speaker 6: of the Kennedy Center. David Rubenstein himself donated over $ 100 million,
- 7:30Speaker 6: raised over a billion dollars for the upkeep of the
- 7:34Speaker 6: Kennedy Center. So this is a model that can work
- 7:37Speaker 6: People are invested. The American people are invested in the
- 7:40Speaker 6: Kennedy Center. They want to see it continue. And but
- 7:45Speaker 6: I think that when Donald Trump says he's thinking of
- 7:47Speaker 6: demolishing it, we better take him seriously because he's done
- 7:51Speaker 6: that before.
- 7:52Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 7:52Speaker 5: Well, I think that's part of why I carried and
- 7:54Speaker 5: you're seeing the court essentially say, listen, you've got to
- 7:56Speaker 5: give us a month's notice if you want to do
- 7:59Speaker 5: anything to this. And let's pick up on what Jonah
- 8:01Speaker 5: was saying, because, I mean, if you look at. polling
- 8:06Speaker 5: on changes to the Smithsonian and the Kennedy Center, nearly
- 8:10Speaker 5: 60 percent of people told CNN they think that President
- 8:13Speaker 5: Trump has gone too far on this. And this does
- 8:16Speaker 5: not even account for what happens when you ask them
- 8:18Speaker 5: if he has.
- 8:19Speaker 4: The right priorities.
- 8:20Speaker 6: Right.
- 8:21Speaker 5: And even when you ask, like, MAGA voters, they're kind
- 8:24Speaker 5: of like, eh, this is not a motivating issue for
- 8:26Speaker 5: them either.
- 8:27Speaker 4: This is solely a motivating issue for the president.
- 8:29Speaker 1: And to your point, Jonah— I don't think most voters
- 8:32Speaker 1: are following this and care about the Kennedy Center individually, right?
- 8:35Speaker 4: They care about their kitchen table issues and cost of living.
- 8:38Speaker 1: But the combined sort of the reflecting pool and the
- 8:42Speaker 1: East Wing and the ballroom and this, they care about
- 8:45Speaker 1: how the president spends his time.
- 8:47Speaker 5: And cumulatively, it is becoming more and more obvious over
- 8:50Speaker 5: time that these are the things that are really animating him,
- 8:52Speaker 5: that he cares the most about and is talking about
- 8:56Speaker 5: this far more than he's talking about what we're doing
- 8:58Speaker 5: to bring down gas prices or what I'm going to
- 9:00Speaker 5: do to address your ability to get health care for
- 9:02Speaker 5: your family.
