- 0:07The Baltimore Orioles faced the Detroit Tigers at Tigers Stadium for a Tuesday night game on September 20th, 1983.
- 0:14The Orioles were in first place in the AL East with a 7.5 game lead over the Tigers.
- 0:19They were managed by Joe Altabelli and his first year as manager.
- 0:22He had taken over the club after the retirement of Earl Weaver in 1982.
- 0:26The Tigers were in a pennant race for the first time in a decade thanks to a core of young talent
- 0:30combined with the experience of manager Sparky Anderson.
- 0:33They entered this game 20 games over 500 and were looking to make a move on the Orioles in the final two weeks of the season.
- 0:38This audio recording is from the Detroit Radio broadcast featuring announcers Ernie Harwell and Paul Carey.
- 0:44And the Orioles have just come on extremely strong in the last month to take control of the Eastern Division race.
- 0:52The Tigers are down eight games in the loss column and seven and a half back in that games behind column.
- 1:00But the Tigers have seven games to play with the Orioles including this twilight doubleheader.
- 1:05They can make a pretty big statement themselves in this doubleheader and in this four game series here at Tigers Stadium.
- 1:13We expect a big crowd. I'm sure the weather has deterred a few at the moment from showing up at least early.
- 1:20But it looks like we might be able to get this game underway fairly close to the starting time.
- 1:26Dan Petrie the Tigers starter in game one is down beginning to loosen up.
- 1:31And so far the Baltimore pitcher has not started to warm up. It's going to be Dennis Martinez in game number one.
- 1:38And the Tigers will see Bill Swaggerty a rookie right hander go in the second game.
- 1:45The Tigers had expected to see Storm Davis but in fact he didn't make the trip here to Detroit with him.
- 1:51He has had some shoulder problems and some pitching problems of late.
- 1:56And so Swaggerty another one of those great finds out of the Orioles system.
- 2:01He is going to be pitching the second game of this doubleheader against Glenn Abbott.
- 2:07The grounds crew right now is folded up the top.
- 2:10Preparatory to getting it on the roller and getting it off. I'm surprised that the rain stopped as suddenly as it has.
- 2:17We had quite a storm roll in here about five minutes before five.
- 2:22And it cut short the latter part of the Orioles pregame practice. They were just about through anyway.
- 2:28And it continued a steady rain up until just moments ago after we had taken the air with the broadcast here.
- 2:35But now it has stopped. The umpires are looking out at the scene and they're coming out of the Tiger dugout.
- 2:41They'll be coming out shortly at least to check on the condition of the field.
- 2:46And the diamond which took a little longer to cover simply because the Orioles were still having practice.
- 2:54Had to get the cage out of the way.
- 2:56And the green netting that is used for batting practices still on the grass right in front of home play.
- 3:02Well I'll be back with the starting lineups for game one of this Twineye doubleheader after these words.

- 3:49Ask about pre-approved loans at Bank of Commerce.
- 3:52Member FDIC.

- 4:10Today thousands of people will shop at Highland Appliance.
- 4:13But who and why? Let's find out. Sir, your name and what do you do?
- 4:16Sam and Lipke, I'm a fault finder.
- 4:18You're a fault finder.
- 4:19Yeah, let me start right off by saying that your shirt and your pants don't match and your one ear is bigger than the other.
- 4:23Ah, well Mr. Lipke, tell us, why did you come to Highland today?
- 4:26I'm finding fault with Highland salesmen.
- 4:28Fault? What fault?
- 4:29What do you mean what fault? What fault? You got a salesman here named Bob Franklin?
- 4:32Yeah, he's one of the best salesmen you'll ever find.
- 4:34Yeah, have you ever seen him bowl?
- 4:35Bowl? Who cares whether or not he can bowl?
- 4:37The guy's in his bowling team, that's who.
- 4:39Look, Mr. Lipke, as long as they're knowledgeable experts at helping people choose the right appliances, that's all that matters.
- 4:44Oh, and when they throw a gutter ball, we're all just supposed to cover our eyes and pretend we didn't see it, huh?
- 4:47The important thing is that they be good salesmen and Highland salesmen are because they have over a hundred hours of special classroom training.
- 4:54Okay, okay, but I'm still not finished with you yet.
- 4:56Me?
- 4:57Yeah, you always had that over bite?
- 4:58Over bite.
- 4:59And your hair changes.
- 5:00What are you talking about?
- 5:01And quit mumbling.
- 5:02Who's mumbling?
- 5:03Highland, everything you never expected from an appliance store.
- 5:05You're mumbling. You are mumbling, sir.
- 5:07Okay.
- 5:30And we'll get the lining of the home plate area here pretty soon.
- 5:40Got a little damp there, as I said before they were able to get the tarp on the field because it really moved in quickly.
- 5:41The rain did, but now it has ceased and it looks like we're going to get this one underway.
- 5:44Let's pause here for station identification.
- 5:46This is the Detroit Tiger Baseball Network.
- 5:51And this is WJR Detroit, the flagship station for Tiger Baseball.
- 5:55WJR offers complete sports coverage at 76 a.m.
- 6:06Now let's look at the lineups for game one of this Twiniter against Dan Petrie in the opener.
- 6:11Dan has won 17 and lost 9.
- 6:14Well, he had won four in a row before dropping his last start.
- 6:18Leading off and playing in center field will be Al Bombrey.
- 6:25Batting second, right fielder Dan Ford in right.
- 6:32Batting third and at shortstop Cal Ripken.
- 6:36Ripken at short.
- 6:40Batting fourth at first base, Andy Murray.
- 6:45Murray playing first base.
- 6:48Batting fifth, left fielder John Loewenstein.
- 6:53Loewenstein in left.
- 6:56Batting sixth, the D.H. for Baltimore, Ken Singleton.
- 7:01Singleton as the D.H. in batting sixth.
- 7:04Hitting in the seventh position will be the catcher Joe Nolan.
- 7:10Nolan catching and batting seventh.
- 7:13Batting eighth at third base, Glenn Gulliver.
- 7:18Next tiger farmehend, Glenn Gulliver at third base and batting eighth.
- 7:22Batting ninth at second base, Rich Dower.
- 7:28Dower at second.
- 7:31From the top again for the Orioles in game one.
- 7:35It'll be Bombrey leading off to center fielder, followed by right fielder Ford, the shortstop Ripken.
- 7:41First baseman Murray, left fielder Loewenstein, the D.H. Singleton, the catcher Nolan, third baseman Gulliver, and second baseman Dower.
- 7:56All the Tigers in the opener against Dennis Martinez, the veteran right hander who has a record of seven wins and 14 defeats.
- 8:04Leading off and playing second base will be Lou Whitaker.
- 8:11Batting second at shortstop, Alan Trammell.
- 8:18Batting third will be left fielder Larry Herndon.
- 8:27Batting fourth and catching in the opener, Lance Parrish.
- 8:35Batting fifth, the D.H. for Detroit, Kirk Gibson.
- 8:40Gibson D.H.
- 8:43Batting sixth at first base, Enos Cabell.
- 8:50Hitting seventh and in center field will be Chet Lemon.
- 8:57Batting eighth, right fielder Glenn Wilson.
- 9:04And batting ninth, third baseman Wayne Kranchicki.
- 9:10Kranchicki playing third.
- 9:14It's a Tiger lineup. Looks pretty much the same as the one the Tigers have been putting on the field against right handers lately, with one exception, Wilson getting the start in right field instead of Rick Leach.
- 9:26It's Whitaker leading off at second with Trammell at short, Herndon in left, Parrish catching, Gibson the D.H., Cabell at first, Lemon in center, Wilson in right, and Kranchicki at third.
- 9:41Lance Parrish reported to the ballpark today, under the weather, he's got some influenza, but Sparky has to have him in this ball game somehow or another, and he's got him in as the catcher in the opening game.
- 9:55And we'll see how Lance can last here tonight against the Orioles in this Twainiter.
- 10:00We've got the lining of the batting boxes at home plate right now, and they've put some of the magic dust, the absorbent sand, out around the mound area.
- 10:11It had gotten dust a little bit moist out there before they got the tarp on the field.
- 10:16Right now the ground screw has the tarp rolled over beyond the foul line, but not up against the wall as yet.
- 10:23They're still kind of holding at the moment. It's very dark here.
- 10:27The lights have been on now for some time, and it had been expected, there's no question of that, that weather people had been giving dire forecasts for a couple of days about the weather on this date,
- 10:39when the Tigers and Orioles were going to get together for this big Twineye doubleheader, and in fact it was going to come in earlier in the day, and hoped in fact it would come in last night and move on through earlier,
- 10:50but now it kind of held off and now hit the stadium just before five o'clock. But right now we've got a little hole in the weather, and maybe it'll be large enough so the Tigers can get a couple of ball games in here against Baltimore.
- 11:04Very big games, no question of that. I know the odds aren't all that good, down seven and a half games, eight games in the loss column, but they are not eliminated by any chance,
- 11:16and they've got the chance to do it themselves in these seven games they have remaining with Baltimore for this week here in Detroit.
- 11:24Following Baltimore, Boston comes in this weekend for three games, and the Tigers go to Baltimore next Tuesday, and will play Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday in Baltimore against the Orioles.
- 11:35The Tigers have done well against Baltimore lately, feeling back in mid-summer after the Tigers had seen the Birds the first time around, and the Birds began to play exceptionally well.
- 11:48The Tigers play well against Baltimore, and they are not frightened of the Orioles by any means. In fact, the Tigers have been the only ones of late to play well against Baltimore down the line.
- 12:08Since September 21st of last year, 1982, the Tigers have won seven and lost four against Baltimore. They are the only team to have a winning record against the Orioles since that time.
- 12:25Dan Petrie continues to loosen up down in the Tiger bullpen area.
- 12:35And we're still waiting for the grounds crew to finish its work. The umpires apparently may have set a time to start this, but I don't know.
- 12:42Dan's been working down there just about long enough to be ready to throw out the first pitch. He's looking over his shoulder, too. He doesn't want to use up his game down in the bullpen.
- 12:52But the umpires have not come out as yet. We have had an umpiring change just a moment ago, and they'll line up this way behind the plate, John Schuylach.
- 13:02At first, Rick Reed. At second, Darrell Cousins. And at third, Dale Ford.
- 13:10Ernie, seven and a half down with only 13 games to play. Tigers have a chance yet.
- 13:19There's always a chance until the season's over. I'd say it would be slim and none right now, but they've got to go ahead and play, and they've almost set a position now where they have to win just about every game.
- 13:32And things like that have happened, but from a realistic standpoint, you'd have to say they don't have much of a chance.
- 13:39What was your feeling, your sensing of the Orioles as they arrived here at Tiger Stadium today?
- 13:45Well, I think the quiet confidence is the kind of a team that they've always had. I was talking to Ray Miller, and he was saying that the guys feel like they're going to do it, but they're not flamboyant about it or anything.
- 13:59They haven't counted their chickens yet because they haven't hatched, at least officially they haven't hatched. So they're going about it in a businesslike way.
- 14:08And you look at fellows like Ripken and Murray, and they do something big, and it's all in a day's work for them. And they just keep on doing it.
- 14:18And I think the remarkable thing is the way this Baltimore team turned around and began to win so many games against so few losses.
- 14:30And they did it in such a fashion to look as if they'd never lose one. They get behind. The game last night was typical. They get behind in the late innings and even in the extra innings and come back.
- 14:42And if they needed two runs, they'd score two. If they needed three, they'd score three. And you know, you hate to use the old cliché, but if a team ever looked like a team of destiny, they have this year.
- 14:56John Miller, the Baltimore broadcaster, was telling you and me that even when they have played bad, they wind up winning the game somehow or another.
- 15:05They look very poor for several innings in a row, maybe, and fall way behind, but then rally and somehow put it together.
- 15:12And it's not just one guy each game, or the two guys, say Ripken or Murray or a Singleton, but it's been the Stapheros and the Dowers and the Bonners and the Gullivers that have come through for them, too.
- 15:25Which is another mark of a good team who have a different hero every night.
- 15:29And I think the fact now that they've got a pretty good size lead, seven and a half games, they could afford a little snuff at this time.
- 15:37They'd probably rather have it right now than have it during the playoffs when they're going to meet the Chicago White Sox.
- 15:43And I think that's going to be a very interesting playoff series.
- 15:46You've got two teams, assuming that the Orioles are going to win it, and it looks like they will, that have put a pretty good margin between themselves and the rest of their division.
- 15:57Chicago leading by fifteen and a half over Kansas City.
- 16:01And they'll be nice and relaxed and ready to go in.
- 16:04And the good thing about that from the managerial standpoint is that the manager can get his pitching rotation all straightened out.
- 16:11Doesn't have to worry about winning his division.
- 16:14He can go in ready and fresh with a good pitching rotation and go right into the playoffs with it.
- 16:21And I know, speaking of the pitching, Joel DeBellis has come up with some people this year like Mike Bottiker and the guy we're going to see in the second game, Bill Swaggerty,
- 16:30that have really filled big holes when it was absolutely necessary.
- 16:35And he's going to have a little bit of a problem, I would think.
- 16:38He's already got it figured out going into, say, a playoff series. Who's going to use as starting pitchers?
- 16:45He's got so many potentials.
- 16:47Yeah, that's right. Well, Swaggerty, John Miller was telling us, and Ray Miller told me too, was a fellow who came in and was under tremendous pressure in that game against Chicago
- 16:58after the Orioles had had a bad series against the Cleveland Indians.
- 17:02And he's the guy that turned it around. He kept him in the ballgame. I think it was 2-2 and then the Orioles went ahead and won it.
- 17:09And they went after that. They won 34 and lost 5 or something like that.
- 17:13Some outstanding kind of a record after Swaggerty had set him right.
- 17:20And I think it's the thing that you like to see with pitchers like that come in and respond to pressure.
- 17:28And you find out one way or the other in a hurry whether they can do their job and make a big difference.
- 17:35It's going to bode well for the future.
- 17:38Starting pitcher, game 3.
- 17:42We're getting word now.
- 17:44We're getting the word now and getting a little action.
- 17:50And we're also getting a little dribbage from the sky at the same time.
- 17:54There was a mist and I saw some umbrellas pop out and now the rain is starting again just as the grounds crew at this moment
- 18:03rolled the tarp back to the wall beyond the Tiger dugout.
- 18:07Petrie is standing down hands on hips.
- 18:10The word from the press box is we've got an Alphonse Gastonac going right now I think.
- 18:15As soon as Dan finishes his warm-up we would have the national anthem.
- 18:19The umpires have not come out. We've not had the pregame meeting at home plate as yet.
- 18:25And the grounds crew now taking care of the extra couple of scraps of tarp down there.
- 18:31But while it brightened up here at Tiger Stadium we got a little rain again.
- 18:38It's not enough to interfere with play once they were going.
- 18:42But since they are not going they might decide to hold off for a little bit.
- 18:46Petrie has really done, completed his warm-ups down there.
- 18:50He's just looking around. He's looking for the home plate meeting.
- 18:53That's what he's looking for. And here they come finally.
- 18:57This is a kind of a situation the umpires dislike as much as anybody to fall because
- 19:03not only do they have to make the decision about when to start the game
- 19:08but then they have to be pretty well in touch with the weather department
- 19:12to know when to stop and restart it.
- 19:16And nobody really knows about what the weather is going to do.
- 19:19And the game belongs to the umpires.
- 19:24They really don't know what to do a lot of times because they can't figure out the weather just like all of us.
- 19:33Well we're finally getting that meeting done.
- 19:35Rick Dempsey is out representing Joel DeBellis Orioles.
- 19:39Rick is the veteran catcher along with Coach Pellican's solo of the Tigers.
- 19:44And now Petrie decides to heat up a little bit more and I think he's just ended.
- 19:49He didn't want to lose it all down there in the bullpen and he's completed his warm-ups.
- 19:55Let's hope that we can get these games in.
- 19:57These Tigers and Orioles have the four games to pack in in the three-day span.
- 20:01And they just soon not have to reschedule anything at all.
- 20:06Let's hope that they can play both these games tonight.
- 20:09The Tigers have had a fine advance sale for all three games, all four games of the series, the three dates.
- 20:17And it looks like we're going to have a fine crowd if the weather holds right now and we get no more rain.
- 20:27Well the Red Jackets are here at any rate, Ernie.
- 20:30Bob Taylor will do the anthem for us and nobody does anything better than Robert does.
- 20:37And Bob has got himself a new Christmas album that is going to be coming out around, I figure, the 1st of November.
- 20:45Got a chance to listen to one of the selections on it and just gorgeous music done with a small choir, young persons choir from Ann Arbor.
- 20:58Beautiful background in that and it will be out I think around the month or so.
- 21:07Now we're going to get the chance to hear Bob Taylor sing our national anthem.
- 21:13Oh say can you see by the dawn's early light What so proudly we hailed at the twilight's last gleaming
- 21:40Whose broad stripes and bright stars through the perilous fight
- 21:50O'er the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming
- 22:01And the rocket's red glare, the bombs bursting in air
- 22:12Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there
- 22:22Oh, say does that star-spangled banner yet wave
- 22:36O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave
- 22:56The great voice of Bob Taylor singing our national anthem.
- 23:07And that album that he's going to have coming up, a little free plug for Bob and his work on the diamond here before the game.
- 23:14Bob Taylor celebrates Christmas as the title of the album.
- 23:17The Brothers record is going to be bringing it up, available through them out of Rochester, Michigan at Post Office Box 904.
- 23:28Now the umpires have moved on to their positions.
- 23:30This game will be getting underway shortly and before it does we'll pause for this message.
- 23:37Nothing says summer quicker than a great backyard barbecue, especially when you start things off with ice cold Budweiser.
- 23:47Now you're cooking.
- 23:49It's Bud for you. There's no one else who does it quite the way you do.
- 23:56It's Bud for you. You know it is and only what you say is what you do.
- 24:03It's Bud for you.
- 24:06The coals are hot and the grill is ready for action.
- 24:08That's when you'll want plenty of ice cold Bud on hand.
- 24:11So turn down the heat this summer with that distinctively clean crisp taste that says Budweiser.
- 24:18This Bud's for you. For all you do. The king of the years is coming through.
- 24:26Bud burgers and dogs coming right up. Yeah, here's to you.
- 24:31For all you do. This Bud's for you. And as it would St. Louis, Missouri.
- 24:47Now Petrie out on the lawn now to take his final warm up tosses.
- 24:51The Tigers are going to be looking at maybe a reborn Dennis Martinez here in the opener of this twilight doubleheader.
- 24:58Dennis is having overall a porous season of his major league career.
- 25:04It was a terrible start for Martinez this year.
- 25:07The 28 year old right hander faced the Tigers one time and the Tigers bombed him.
- 25:12Petrie was the winning pitcher that night.
- 25:14The Tigers wound up beating Baltimore 9 to nothing in four innings time.
- 25:19Martinez was nicked for six runs on eight Tiger hits.
- 25:23But he sat up in terms of starting for some time, even used him in relief rolls.
- 25:30And he went a period from August 23rd, I beg your pardon, from August 6th to August 23rd without starting.
- 25:44He did pitch some relief.
- 25:46But he came back in the last Wednesday night and beat the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park.
- 25:51He went six innings, allowed four hits and no runs, and that was his first victory since July 26th, his first start since the 6th of August.
- 26:00Well, maybe he is back.
- 26:02We're going to find out something about that this afternoon, this evening here in the opener of this twilight doubleheader.
- 26:08Dan Petrie had his four game winning streak coming to an end in the opener of the series in Boston this past weekend, losing that game 6 to 1.
- 26:17He's ready to start another one. Little Al Bumbrey steps in to lead things off for Baltimore.
- 26:22And here for the play-by-play is Ernie Harwell.
- 26:25Thank you, Paul. Here's one of the sharp guys on this Baltimore ball club.
- 26:29He's a veteran now, but he can still run very well, batting 279 to lead off man Bumbrey.
- 26:35Left hand about at the plate, bows it away.
- 26:37We're underway in the first of a twilight doubleheader at Tiger Stadium.
- 26:41Strike one on Bumbrey.
- 26:4622-minute delay here at the start of the game because of the moisture.
- 26:52Trinchicki at third, Chamelechard-Hoodacard second, Cabell at first base, and the outfield at Herndon-Limmon and Wilson.
- 26:58He could have lived his strike. He got the slider in.
- 27:02And Bumbrey looks at that one for a strike too.
- 27:0573 degrees at game time at Tiger Stadium.
- 27:13Outfield a little bit to left on Al Bumbrey.
- 27:15He'll be followed by Ford, and then it'll be Ripken in the Baltimore first inning.
- 27:20Here's the motion, the right-handed deals.
- 27:22Here's a foul out of play. Back to the grandstand of the county, still strike two.
- 27:28Bumbrey, one of the veterans of this team, he was rookie of the year with Baltimore back in 73.
- 27:35Hit 337 that year. Last year he batted 262.
- 27:40Getting a little better than that right now, 279 for Al.
- 27:45Petrie gets his sign from Parrish Works again. The pitch is a ball high.
- 27:52And the Tiger fans thought that Mr. Bumbrey might have been fanned on that one, but umpire Shulock didn't agree with him.
- 28:02On both two strikes to count on him.
- 28:06Jimmy Williams coaches at first base, Cal Ripken senior third.
- 28:11There's a ground ball to Whitaker, he's a chance, throw to first to Cavell, one away.
- 28:20And Ford, the right-hand batting right fielder, steps up now.
- 28:28Ford batting 281 with nine homers and 55 runs batted in.
- 28:34That's a large increase over his season's record last year when he batted 235.
- 28:42Outfield plays him straight away.
- 28:52Ford in a close stance. Generally he's considered a curveball pitcher.
- 28:56There's a hard slider in for a strike.
- 29:05Usually the Tigers try to pitch him in with a fast stop.
- 29:15Right-hand batter up, field straight up on Dan Ford, no score for sitting.
- 29:20And there's a pop-up into short-center.
- 29:23Lemon coming in, he's there, he makes the catch for the off.
- 29:27Two down.
- 29:31Cal Ripken stepping up now.
- 29:35There are two men in this Baltimore lineup who are considered legitimate candidates for most valuable player.
- 29:44They are right here in order, Cal Ripken and Eddie Murray.
- 29:49Ripken batting 312 with 95 RBIs and 24 home runs.
- 29:57Big, strong shortstop. Stands very deep in the batter's box, two out, nobody on.
- 30:03The game is scoreless in the first inning of the first game.
- 30:07And he takes a strike on the outside corner.
- 30:20Ripken, another county head who seems to like to ball in on him, and they try to pitch him curves away.
- 30:26There's a swing and a miss. He was jammed on that one right up at the letter.
- 30:31Two quick strikes on him.
- 30:36Kintzicki backing up at third, no score first inning, two out for Baltimore.
- 30:41The battle has just begun here at the quarter of Michigan and Trumbull.
- 30:45Come on out and join us, we've got two games here tonight.
- 30:50Here's the motion by Dan, he deals again that it is a low curve outside.
- 30:56As I told you, Lance Parrish is not feeling up to par.
- 31:07He's in there anyway catching in this first game.
- 31:13Little touch of the flu or something like that. Here's the one-two pitch.
- 31:17Ripken strikes out swinging and Petrie has a good inning.
- 31:21He sets the birds down one, two, three.

- 33:23Panda, pizza, now available at participating neighborhood Little Caesar's.
- 33:30Nanny Martinez tuning up now right at the face of Tigers after Petrie set the birds down one, two, three in their half of the first inning.
- 33:44And it'll be Whitaker, Chambl and Herndon to test Mr. Martinez, who is undergoing his toughest season since he's been in Baltimore.
- 33:58And he's come back in the last outing or so and done a good job.
- 34:03He's a record for the year seven and fourteen.
- 34:07Sweet Lou Whitaker at the plate ready to try to get it started for the Tigers.
- 34:16Lou batting at three fifteen eleven home runs and sixty four runs better than he'll be followed by Chambl and it'll be Herndon.
- 34:24Right hand to Martinez on the mound ready to go to work.
- 34:30And there's a chopper foul down past third a little grounded outside the bag.
- 34:35Gulliver playing third Ripken at short.
- 34:37Doward at second Murray at first for Baltimore.
- 34:40They've got Nolan catching.
- 34:42Loewenstein is in left Bumbrian centered forward and right.
- 34:46Denny Martinez on the mound.
- 34:49And he can throw hard. There's a fastball outside of the count one and one.
- 34:54Got a slider and a good change up.
- 35:04Also a good fielding pitcher Denny Martinez.
- 35:07There's a foul upstairs out of play one and two to count on Lou Whitaker.
- 35:12This is the few lot putting a new baseball into play now.
- 35:21The Baltimore outfield plays the Whitaker around toward right.
- 35:26Different save in the Boston outfield is dead.
- 35:29Here's a pitch by the right hander and it is a breaking ball wide to to the count on Lou.
- 35:36Cloudy skies the rain seems to have subsided at least for a while.
- 35:43Martinez gets his sign from Nolan again and the works.
- 35:47There's a foul fly out of play.
- 35:49Let's pause briefly for station identification.
- 35:52This is the Detroit Tiger baseball network.
- 35:55And you're listening to Tiger baseball on radio 76.
- 35:58The great voice of the Great Lakes WJR Detroit.
- 36:10To count on Lou Whitaker no score first hitting Tigers at bat.
- 36:15There's another foul out of play.
- 36:17This one lifted over on the third base side.
- 36:21Still a two to count on him.
- 36:28Petrie set the Orioles down in order and they're half of the first inning.
- 36:35Now Martinez working against the Tigers.
- 36:38The Orioles have won 10 of their last 11.
- 36:40They've won four straight and they lead the Tigers by seven and a half.
- 36:46Ground ball to first base.
- 36:48Murray grabs it.
- 36:49Makes the play of the sister one up and one down in the Tiger first inning.
- 36:55Comes Alan travel the Detroit shortstop batting a 313 with 14 home runs and 62 RBI last month or so.
- 37:06And Whitaker has stayed fairly close together in the offensive figures.
- 37:22Here's Tram waiting on Denny Martinez no score first inning.
- 37:27Swing and a roll of foul on the third base side in the grass.
- 37:32He's got a nice swing on that one and just tapped it down the third base side.
- 37:45Orioles have been getting some good hitting since August 26 as a team they're batting 313.
- 37:52And in the pitching department in the last 38 games since August 12 they've got a 2.71 earned run average.
- 38:00There's the strike big curve over.
- 38:04Pitching and hitting going together you've got it pretty well made.
- 38:09Two strikes on Alan that was a good hard breaking ball on the outside corner from Martinez.
- 38:16Now they wind up in the pitch.
- 38:18Swung on ground ball hit sharply and foul down past third.
- 38:30Chicago and the Phillies are underway in their game they are 2 to 2 at the end of one.
- 38:35Trout against Grosch that's a twilight game in Philadelphia.
- 38:39Pittsburgh beat the Mets today in their game 4-0.
- 38:44Martinez did it his fastball fouled away.
- 38:47The Tigers have done one thing these first two hitters they've made him throw a lot of pitches already.
- 38:54And they've lost a lot of baseballs already too in the seats on these fouls back among the customers.
- 39:08Denny looks him over gets his side again from Nolan it is a strike two count on Tramiel here it comes.
- 39:14Swing another foul out of play well he's not wasting any still a strike two count and Alan just keeps fouling them off.
- 39:36Denny Martinez end of action Tramiel waits here it comes here's a swing and a line drive they hit for the field.
- 39:44Resistance pays off for Tramiel.
- 39:47That's the first runner in the game Herndon will be the next Tiger batter.
- 39:52Larry batting 296 with 18 home runs and 83 runs about at end.
- 40:00He has an eighth game hitting streak.
- 40:05One of the remarkable things about Baltimore is the left field position they've used mainly Gary Renneke and John Loewenstein.
- 40:12And that left field position has produced a 298 average with 32 home runs and 119 RBI.
- 40:22So there's a case of the platoon system really paying dividends.
- 40:28Here's a pitch to Herndon it's a fastball high.
- 40:46All on the count on Larry.
- 40:50Now the set by Martinez he flips over to first base pretty good move for Dennis but Tramiel back in time.
- 41:02The center field of Bombery is slightly toward right field on Larry Herndon.
- 41:07Now the set by Martinez run a go as it's a strike Nolan slow to second.
- 41:23The challenge 26th of the year number 26 he's having fun here in the total base.
- 41:40One and one that's the count on her did the Tigers got a man in second with one away in the first inning of the first game it scored us.
- 41:51Martinez that checks his side again that might be right hand a pitchers a good stop by Nolan at the plate.
- 42:11The breeze are coming out of the west right now blowing from third base out toward the right field.
- 42:21Steps away Martinez took a little bit too much time for him so he's going to step out of the batter's box.
- 42:35The right hand ready for action it is a 2 1 pitch due to Larry Herndon to go sample and it is low for the third.
- 42:50Nolan didn't have a chance.
- 43:05The third now with one man down the infield will play back at this stage of the game Baltimore will give up a run and exchange it for the out.
- 43:20That's a count on Larry Herndon.
- 43:39Dennis is ready. He said he holds it he pitches a ball.
- 43:50And on first man on third down and the Nolan go out the top with Danny Martinez and the next man to bat will be Parrish.
- 44:04The chances hitting to seventy two he didn't have much of a series up in Boston.
- 44:10Twenty five home runs and one hundred and five RBI.
- 44:15Come Gray Miller the pitching coach of Baltimore out.
- 44:21He wants to say something to the Richard Danny Martinez.
- 44:32I don't know that they ever did find out what was wrong with Dennis earlier in the year mechanically apparently had seemed sound but it had to be something wrong there because the arm was sound and he was having no pain there and he was just getting hit hard.
- 44:48He's got in a bad spell there probably and slumped just as bad as slump and field is slumped.
- 45:05He seems to have pulled out of it but right now the Tigers have run as a first and third the conference is over.
- 45:19And the Parrish at the plate game is scoreless in the last half of the first inning and there's a breaking ball all ball one.
- 45:40And then edging off the bag at first they've got Eddie Murray holding over there with him.
- 45:49Swing and a miss on a hard one.
- 45:51One and one on Lance Parrish.
- 45:54The Orioles felt he was throwing a high too much early in the year. You'll notice that much of the many of the pitches he's missing out of those sliders that is but they're low.
- 46:10Especially in a ballpark like this one.
- 46:12Now the one one delivery coming up the land.
- 46:15He swings and misses again. One and two the count on him.
- 46:27Gibson is waiting on deck. The Tigers with a scoring chance here in the opening inning.
- 46:32They've got Trammel at third and her and down.
- 46:37So Parrish waits again on the one two served by the right handed Eddie Martinez.
- 46:44And it is a high one.
- 46:46And then goes to second he makes it.
- 47:15The word from Chuck Lockett the official scorer.
- 47:21It's a steal for Herndon and the Trammel scores on the throwing arrow by Nolan the same arrow on which Herndon moved to third base and the Tigers have a one nothing lead.
- 47:31Herndon is now at third with one out and the two to count on Parrish.
- 47:38Markey running his team trying to keep out of that double play in that situation there.
- 47:45And he got an extra bonus out of it. Here's a set the fit.
- 47:48I think that's a little reliant on the set up.
- 48:14The last nine games picking it up a little bit here drove the end of the year.
- 48:25Parrish on first one man down.
- 48:30Two nothing the Tigers jumping in front here in the first game of the double header.
- 48:49I feel deep the right the infield and double play them.
- 48:56Gibson swing.
- 49:04Coming home you'll score.
- 49:29A long line drive up the alley and deep left center.
- 49:34They throw came to the plate not in time to nip Parrish who's going all the way first and Gibson goes into third with a three bagger.
- 49:43The Tigers jump in front three nothing in the first inning.
- 50:03Jim Palmer is starting to lose that in the Baltimore bullpen.
- 50:14Gibson at third base Martinez delivers is a breaking ball into a close ball.
- 50:24One out a single by travel walk to her and a single by Parrish a triple by Gibson plus the three stolen bases and a throwing error by the catcher Nolan leading to the Tiger three nothing advantage in the first inning.
- 50:38Here's a bit the swings a mounting ball.
- 50:47They are now ahead for another.
- 50:51One out.
- 51:03That is batting to sixty one he has sixty four RBI and twenty four homeless.
- 51:15Nolan wants a conference with Danny Martinez.
- 51:30Early in this inning the Tigers use their running to set up the scoring and then they hitters came through.
- 51:45The other three hits have been single by travel by Parrish and by Cabell.
- 51:50Here's Lemon to try to keep it moving for runs on four hits to the Tigers no runs and no hits for the Orioles.
- 52:00The Tigers leading off the bag over there first and Jeff Lemon awaits.
- 52:28I think he's right.
- 52:33I think the ground rule is that it's above that yellow line at the home run.
- 52:46The old bullpen area.
- 53:07You just don't see a ball hit the foul ball above that yellow line very often.
- 53:11That's the first one I remember.
- 53:16There may have been one before when I was broadcasting but that's the first one I can remember.
- 53:23What a long blow and it's five nothing the Tigers lemon is the third now with that three bagger.
- 53:30And let's see what Wilson can do he's batting to sixty eight with eleven home runs.
- 53:36And he takes a curve it's outside ball one that's the second triple in the setting.
- 53:46If he had gone the one way or slice the other way it would have been a home run.
- 54:08He's the right side of that six to nothing Detroit.
- 54:21After the out by Whitaker here's what happened.
- 54:25Not counting the stolen base.
- 54:27A single a walk a single a triple a single a triple and a single.
- 54:43It comes out of belly out he might want to make a change at this point.
- 54:47He's looking on the bullpen.
- 54:49He's not signal yet for Jim Palmer.
- 54:52Now he gets the signal and that's off at any Martinez.
- 54:59He will leave the game with Palmer taking over and the Tigers in the first inning have set up a six to nothing lead over the rivals from Baltimore.
- 55:09Incredible opening inning for the Tigers against the front running Baltimore Orioles and Dennis Martinez trots off to the dugout.
- 55:18Palmer is coming on just to keep this one respectable here in the first inning.
- 55:23The Tigers Martinez for six hits five of them in a row two of them triples and they were by way of the umpires about that drive of lemons off the foul ball.
- 55:35Is that the umpire say that if it hits the foul ball no matter where it hits it and bounces onto the field the ball is in play.
- 55:44That is it could hit it way up by the bleachers and it would still be in play apparently.
- 55:48The difference how far up the foul ball it goes it's in play.
- 55:52Jim Palmer the veteran stylish right hander takes over on the mound and while he warms up we'll take time out for this message.
- 56:02Everywhere you turn these days you're bombarded with ads about the new IRA plans.
- 56:06Well Farmers Insurance Group believes that IRA is a great idea it can help you tax shelter up to $2,000 of your earned income every year for your retirement and it's a wonderful way to supplement Social Security.

- 56:30It backs you with the security and stability of Farmers a major U.S. financial institution.

- 56:39So before you leap into just any IRA look at your Farmers agent's special plan.
- 56:45In Clarkston call Carl Hardin at 625-4331.
- 56:49In Rochester, Nora Murphy 656-0046.
- 56:54And in Berkeley, Darling Lough Gower at 399-4343.
- 56:59I'm embarrassed by what I was saying earlier in relaying the information from the umpires about the flagpole.
- 57:08I kept saying foul pole. I meant the flagpole out in center field just a little bit to the left of center field.
- 57:13The ball hitting it no matter where it hits it it's in play if it goes back on the field.
- 57:18Now Jim Palmer, number 22, doing a little pawing away on the mound ready to face Wayne Crenshecki with Wilson at first.
- 57:25Still only one out in the Tiger first inning, six nothing Tigers. Ernie?
- 57:29All right we'll see whether Crenshecki can keep it going now for the Tigers against the reliever Jim Palmer.
- 57:36Outfield is a little bit, no they're going to play him straight away.
- 57:40Palmer looking back, Jim is one of the few pitchers that you'll see designate the area where he wants his outfielders to play.
- 57:49Turn around and point and ask them to move over or stay where they are or whatever.
- 57:54Here's Crenshecki and he takes the breaking ball in for a strike.
- 57:58Wayne batting 259.
- 58:02Palmer with a record of four and four. This is his 12th game.
- 58:07All but one of his appearances before this one have been as a starting pitcher.
- 58:14Six runs and six hits for the Tigers. They lead six nothing.
- 58:17There's a ball outside the breaking ball low. One and one they count on Crenshecki.
- 58:27Jim Palmer will be 38 years old in the middle of October.
- 58:31He delivers a fastball outside two and one.
- 58:46The tall right hander deals again and Crenshecki slices a little pop line to left.
- 58:51Lowenstein digging, can't get it. It's dropped in, bounced off his glove.
- 58:56On the third now will go Wilson and Crenshecki holds it first base.
- 59:02Little Texas Laker between Ripken and Lowenstein.
- 59:05Lowenstein charged it, couldn't get to it if they saw it squirted away from it.
- 59:12See whether there's an error charge to Lowenstein or whether it'll just be a single and that's it.
- 59:19So far no report that it'll be any more than a single.
- 59:22So here comes Whitaker up for the second time in the first inning.
- 59:27The first time up he bounced the first. And everybody since then has reached base.
- 59:35There's the word. Lowenstein is charged with an error.
- 59:39Allowing Wilson to take third base after he had stopped at second on the single by Crenshecki.
- 59:50Blue takes it. It is a fastball high from Jim Palmer.
- 59:53Six runs and seven hits for the Tigers.
- 1:00:00Murray holding Crenshecki at first base.
- 1:00:04The outfield on Whitaker is almost straight up now.
- 1:00:06They're not playing him as much to right as they did before.
- 1:00:15Now the pitch on the way, it's a ball ball.
- 1:00:19A little unusual too because you figure Palmer does not throw as hard as Denny Martinez.
- 1:00:24Maybe they know how they're going to pitch him.
- 1:00:282-0 to count on Whitaker.
- 1:00:35That's the pitch. He swings. There's a long one.
- 1:00:38Deep right and it is gone. Home run for Whitaker.
- 1:00:42A three run homer, a nine to nothing lead for the joy.
- 1:00:53Number 12 for Lowenstein, Crenshecki and Wilson go ahead of it.
- 1:00:59The Tigers have a nine to nothing lead over the league leaders.
- 1:01:05That was another Armistown home run.
- 1:01:07It sends the gift certificate to $25 worth of armor food product
- 1:01:11to the Detroit Baptist Children's Home Redeemable at ANC Food Show.
- 1:01:15Compliment of Armour Food Company.
- 1:01:19The Tigers have scored nine times here in the opening inning.
- 1:01:27Here's Cammel who started with a single with one out.
- 1:01:31And he takes a small one, high ball one.
- 1:01:36That was Lou Whitaker's 12th home run.
- 1:01:43In too close on Cram, 2-0 to count on him.
- 1:01:55Armour one delivers. Here's a strike called on Cammel, 2-1.
- 1:02:07This crowd are buzzing about this nine run first inning.
- 1:02:10There's a fly ball in into left center.
- 1:02:13Will it drop in? Yes, sir. It does. Another hit for the Tigers.
- 1:02:16Cammel gets his second hit of the first inning.
- 1:02:22And the crowd is loving this surge by the Tigers.
- 1:02:28Here's Herndon stepping up. He walked the first trip.
- 1:02:33The Tigers have set eleven men to the right.
- 1:02:36They have scored nine runs.
- 1:02:41Here's one man out and one man on.
- 1:02:43And Herndon with a pregame average of 296.
- 1:02:49He takes a fast ball from Jim Palmer, ball one.
- 1:02:57Murray holding close at first base with Cammel.
- 1:03:00They've got Dower, the second baseman, over to the bag toward his right.
- 1:03:05He's set by Palmer. He pitches. Here's a fly ball to keep the left.
- 1:03:10Going back, Loewenstein. And this one is gone.
- 1:03:13Here's one over to Herndon. Eleven to nothing for Tigers leader.
- 1:03:19Number 19 for Larry Herndon.
- 1:03:22Here comes Cammel to score. Here comes Herndon home.
- 1:03:29Eleven to nothing to join.
- 1:03:38Here's another Armour Star home run. It sends a gift certificate for $45 worth of Armour food products.
- 1:03:44The Boulevard Temple Methodist retirement, redeemable at Meyer Thrift Yeakers.
- 1:03:50Compliments of the Armour Food Company.
- 1:03:56We'll get a pinch batter now for Parrish.
- 1:03:58Walk-in Foss will bat for Lance Parrish here in the first inning.
- 1:04:06You can see here that Lance was ailing. He's got flu or something.
- 1:04:10And Walk-in Foss is batting for him now. Takes it inside, let up, ball one.
- 1:04:14John batting to 79. The Tigers have scored 11 times here in the opening inning.
- 1:04:21Armour to the Bears. It is in the dirt. Ball to the Walk-in Foss.
- 1:04:28The Tigers have 10 hits and a walk in the city.
- 1:04:34The ball low. Three hit ohs to count on John B.
- 1:04:47Armour scraping around with his spikes out there on the mound.
- 1:04:50Now the right-hander winds up pitching. It's a strike called on Walk-in Foss, three at one.
- 1:05:02The wide-up stopped in the middle of it. Now starts over. Here's the pitch.
- 1:05:07It is a lower and he walked in.
- 1:05:12The second walk of the inning.
- 1:05:20Here comes Gibson. He tripled his first time.
- 1:05:25He's a 14th Tiger batter to come to the plate.
- 1:05:32Walk-in Foss at first. Gibson at bat.
- 1:05:35The Tigers lead 11-0 over the Bears.
- 1:05:44I feel almost straight up on Gibson. His triple was the left-hander.
- 1:05:49And he bowed it away. Didn't get around to the fastball.
- 1:05:58Eight different times that Jim Palmer has won 20 games of the season.
- 1:06:01He's been the outstanding pitcher in Baltimore history.
- 1:06:05Here's the pitch by Jim and a change. It's one-hundred missed by Gibson. Two strikes on him.
- 1:06:11Now pitching goes Ray Miller. He's giving a sign down to the bullpen.
- 1:06:13Get a left-hander up there. Somebody. Some side-arming left-hander, it looks like, the sign is.
- 1:06:20Gibson leaning in waiting. Two strikes on him. A man out of the man out.
- 1:06:24And he swings and misses. Struck him out. That'll be the second out of the inning.
- 1:06:29Here comes Cabell.
- 1:06:43Tigers set 12 men up without anybody being retired between the bounce-out by Whitaker and the strike-out by Gibson here in the first inning.
- 1:06:53A remarkable string. There's a fastball outside on Cabell.
- 1:07:01All of those at 12 batters had hits except Herndon, the walk, and the walk-and-pass walk.
- 1:07:08Change-up is in too close, 2-0.
- 1:07:13Notice the scoreboard is not capable of putting in 11 for inning number one.
- 1:07:18We'll just have to remember that the Tigers scored 11.
- 1:07:27There's a ground ball deep jogged up, ripped it over, grabbed it, brought it back and not in time.
- 1:07:32It'll be another hit for the Tigers.
- 1:07:37Cabell gets his second hit of the inning.
- 1:07:43Here comes Chap Lemon who hit a triple off the flagpole the first time he batted in the city.
- 1:07:48Let's pause briefly for station identification. This is the Detroit Tiger Baseball Network.

- 1:08:21They've also picked up a couple of walks here in the first inning.
- 1:08:24They've got two men on and two men out against Jim Palmer relieving Denny Martinez.
- 1:08:30Jim, not quite ready, straddles his slab out there. Lemon did not get out of the batter's box.
- 1:08:37On the set, the pitch, he takes high and away, ball two, two and oh.
- 1:08:50Dan Moro, yellow, is the left-hander throwing in the bullpen.
- 1:08:56Here's the set now by Palmer. He deals again. Lemon swings. There's a high pop-up back of third base.
- 1:09:03It should end the inning. Here comes Loewenstein and he gets it.
- 1:09:07He collides with Ripken, but he holds on to it and the inning is over.
- 1:09:12And what an inning it's been. The Tigers have got eleven runs on eleven hits.

- 1:10:22The trees and shrubs that beautify your home can also damage it when their roots penetrate sewage pipes.
- 1:10:28But aerobic root killer from True Value hardware stores can clear them away and keep them away.
- 1:10:33Hi, Pat Summerall to tell you it destroys roots where they enter and prevents regrowth.
- 1:10:38Then minimize septic tank maintenance with aerobic septic tank treatment that breaks down wastes to prevent clogging.
- 1:10:45Both non-caustic aerobic formulas protect your home for a full year.
- 1:10:48And they're available at participating True Value hardware stores and home centers.
- 1:10:53It's Farmer Jack savings time. Time to save on a delicious high grade whole boneless ham.
- 1:10:58It's just a dollar twenty-eight a pound this week only at Farmer Jack.
- 1:11:07That's what you call a big inning or a big beginning.
- 1:11:12The Tigers get eleven and they lead the Baltimore eleven nothing going into the second inning.
- 1:11:18Some changes for the Tigers. Walk-in fuss will stay in the game and do the catching.
- 1:11:23Rick Leach will go to first base replacing Caval.
- 1:11:26And the Orioles bat now on the second Eddie Murray, John Lowenstein and Ken Singleton will face Dan Petrie.
- 1:11:42Murray the switchback about about left handed.
- 1:11:48I'll peel around the right on him. He's hitting three oh six another great year for Eddie Murray.
- 1:11:53What an outstanding player he's been.
- 1:11:56Very consistent at the plate. Very consistent in the field.
- 1:12:00Plays just about every game. He's had twenty-eight home runs. He's knocked in a hundred and one runs.
- 1:12:05Petrie on the mound working with a lead eleven and nothing and he fires a fastball in for a strike.
- 1:12:12Strike one called on Eddie Murray.
- 1:12:24There's a ball in close on Eddie one and one.
- 1:12:28Couple of home runs and two triples featured at the eleven run search by the Tigers.
- 1:12:34Triple by Gibson, triple by Lemon, home run by Whitaker, home run by Herndon.
- 1:12:39Now the one one delivery Murray hits a bounding ball to the right. It'll be a hit.
- 1:12:44A ground seagull between Whitaker and Leach puts Eddie Murray on. He's the first Oriole runner today.
- 1:12:51Lowenstein will be the batter, the veteran outfielder.
- 1:12:56John's come up with a lot of key hits for this Baltimore club this year batting 279, 12 home runs and 51 RBI.
- 1:13:13Swings and fouls it away. That one came down hit him on the foot.
- 1:13:25And missed a shoe lock to play it up. I was going to take that one out of play.
- 1:13:31Lowenstein basically a fastball hitter. He likes to pull the ball most of the time.
- 1:13:38Not quite ready to get back in there yet.
- 1:13:42Still got that hot dog.
- 1:13:47Strike one the count on John. Here's the set by Dan Petrie. He delivers. Here's a high foul that will be out of play. Strike two.
- 1:13:55Now let's send out some birthday wishes. Rose Almaninic of Detroit. Happy birthday to Rose.

- 1:16:42And he'll be followed by the catcher Joe Nolan.
- 1:16:49Breeze is picking up a little bit. It's blowing out toward right.
- 1:16:53Still cloudy skies in Detroit. Here's the pitch. One on the ground ball. Deep short.
- 1:16:58Chammell has it. Long throw to first. To Leach.
- 1:17:02And Eddie Murray crosses the plate to give Baltimore their first run of the night.
- 1:17:077-1 the Tigers lead. Now it'll be an RBI by Singleton on the ground out to travel.
- 1:17:14It went very deep and made the long throw to Leach.
- 1:17:25Here's Joe Nolan, the left-handed batting catcher with a.286 average.
- 1:17:30And Joe takes a ball wide from Dan Petrie.

- 1:17:43Nolan waits. Here it comes. He swings and hits a foul ball on the ground down past first base.
- 1:17:51Good to have Mr. Dale Conquest.
- 1:17:55Star of WJR. Sports rap. Et cetera, et cetera.
- 1:18:01Out with us today.

- 1:18:58Nolan still waiting and the county still 1-2 on Joe.
- 1:19:01Here's the windup by Petrie. The pitch is swung on and hit foul again.
- 1:19:06Down past first base.
- 1:19:11You missed that first inning. The Tigers scored 11 times on 11 hits.
- 1:19:16They sent 16 batters to the plate.
- 1:19:22After the first out by Whitaker, the next 12 reach base consecutively.

- 1:21:2211-0 the Tigers lead the Orioles in the second inning.
- 1:21:27Swing, there's a drive to right, going back is Wilson. It is off the wall.
- 1:21:33And Nolan has a long single. The ball got over Wilson's head before he could get back and then he played the ricochet well.
- 1:21:40And fired it in the channel.
- 1:21:43And here comes Gulliver to the plate.
- 1:21:49Gulliver hitting 333 in 12 games. That's 8-24 with a couple of RBI's and no home runs for Glenn.
- 1:22:00Left hand batter stepping in.
- 1:22:03He stands deep in the batter's box.
- 1:22:09Peecher ready, serves and it is a fast ball high and away on Gulliver.
- 1:22:16Gulliver batted 309 this year at Rochester and had 11 home runs and 62 RBI's.

- 1:23:24The ex-tiger gets on on the base on balls. That'll put two on and two out.
- 1:23:29That'll bring up Jim Dower for the second baseman.
- 1:23:36Dower batting 231 with five home runs and 39 runs batted in.
- 1:23:50That's the first walk issued by Peecher. He's walked one and struck out one.

- 1:24:03Game delayed in its start because of rain.
- 1:24:08Tigers lead in the second inning 11-1. It's the first of two here tonight.
- 1:24:13Swing and a fly ball lifted into short-staffed Herndon comes in. He's there. He's got it in the side retire.

- 1:26:03Tigers coming to bat now to see what they can do for an encore after the first inning. They scored 11 times in that opener and they've got an 11-1 lead.
- 1:26:17Waiting on the catcher, Nolan, to come out.
- 1:26:21He was on base and had to go get his catching equipment on.
- 1:26:25And now he takes over from Depth to warm up Jim Palmer and toss one down to second base and we're about set to go.
- 1:26:43Glenn Wolfson who had a single and drug and a run in the first inning will lead it off for the Tigers.
- 1:26:53Now field straight up on Glenn. 11-1 to Tigers lead in the second inning.
- 1:26:57Here's a high foul out of play upstairs. Strike one. He swung late on Palmer's fastball.
- 1:27:08Now Jim looks into Nolan to get the sign, goes to work again on Wolfson. There's a fastball that jams him one and one to count.
- 1:27:23Here's the motion by Jim Palmer. The pitch is swung on at the second base. One down. He has an easy hop, throw to Murray. One up and one down in the Tigers' second inning.
- 1:27:37We're going to be backing up our innings here on our scorecard.
- 1:27:40Yeah, that's right.
- 1:27:44Really going to be a filled up scorecard tonight.
- 1:27:47Here's Krunchicki. He contributed a single and another 11-hit attack on the first inning for the Tigers.
- 1:27:53Batting 266 down. Facing one of his old teammates, Jim Palmer. There's a ball outside on the way.
- 1:28:00Sen Getwell wishes to Mrs. William Graber of Romulus. Hope she's up and at him soon.
- 1:28:07Here's the wind up on the pitch and it is a slow one that hits the middle of the plate. One and one to count on Wayne Krunchicki.
- 1:28:17He's had some hits in the last three games for this guy. There's a ball outside. Two and one to count on him.
- 1:28:31Fastball high to Krunchicki. Three-one on the Tigers' third baseman.
- 1:28:42Here's the motion, the pitch on the way, swing of the ground ball wide of the first base picked up by Dower.
- 1:28:47He can't hold it and Krunchicki is safe. He came over to glove side.
- 1:28:57Got his glove on it but couldn't hang on after the ball got past Murray.
- 1:29:02Palmer came over to cover but Dower couldn't find the handle of the ball after he knocked it down.
- 1:29:07Here's a single for Krunchicki, his second hit. And here's Lou Whittaker who batted twice in the first inning.
- 1:29:14Bounced the first in the leadoff spot and then hit a three-run home with the next time up.
- 1:29:21Number 12 in the home run column for Sweet Lou.
- 1:29:27Palmer on the mound, 11-1 to Tigers. Here's a fastball outside from Big Tall Jim, ball one.
- 1:29:43It's a ball outside. Every one of the Tigers starters has a hit already.
- 1:29:55Lock and pass who batted for Harris through a walk. Rick Leach, the other substitution, has not yet been to the plate.
- 1:30:04Here's a fastball over above the knees, a two-and-one on Lou Whittaker.
- 1:30:08You realize how unusual that is for doers to have said that, that we haven't even finished the second inning and every starter has at least one hit.
- 1:30:15That's right, only one out at the second.
- 1:30:19Here's the pitch Lou takes and it is a ball low, three-and-one.
- 1:30:27Looks like they all got them on the first inning. Absolutely.
- 1:30:34Tigers starting off with a bang, here's the pitch and Lou swings and fouls it away.
- 1:30:40Tigers starting off with a bang, here's the pitch and Lou swings and fouls it away.
- 1:30:44It's going to be over in the third base sector.
- 1:30:49Three-two, the count on Whittaker.
- 1:30:55Eleven runs, twelve hits for Detroit, one run and two hits for Baltimore.
- 1:31:02Lou swings and fouls another one away. This one straight back behind the plate.
- 1:31:13The pitch seems to be changing, it's blowing a little bit more out toward left now.
- 1:31:22Man at first, Krunchecki, three-two pitch, Whittaker takes and he has a walk.
- 1:31:31That's the second walk issued by Jim Palmer.
- 1:31:35It will bring Allen travel to the plate. Allen had two singles in the first inning, two for two so far.
- 1:31:42The field is average up to three-sixteen.
- 1:31:48Truman on, one man down, the Tigers lead eleven to one in the second inning of the first game.
- 1:31:57Here's the stretch by the tall right-hander Palmer. He pitches, here's a fly ball, short set, it might drop in.
- 1:32:02Brumford coming hard, can't get it, dropped in front, but Krunchecki will score when it could take third and Saddle has three for three.
- 1:32:13And the Tigers get their twelve runs.
- 1:32:17Here comes Herndon who had a walk and a two-way.
- 1:32:22In the first inning.
- 1:32:32Man on first and a man on third.
- 1:32:36In field and double play depth for the Orioles.
- 1:32:41Twelve to one, Detroit leads Baltimore.
- 1:32:48Palmer straddles the slab, nothing happens, Herndon just steps up about his mark.
- 1:33:01Every Tiger starter has an RBI except Krunchecki.
- 1:33:05Here's a high foul out of play.
- 1:33:09That will reach the seats back at first base.
- 1:33:13And Krunchecki could hardly be faulted, he has two singles and two trips.
- 1:33:25Herndon steps away, strike one, the count on Larry.
- 1:33:35Jim Palmer checking his sign, Whitaker on second.
- 1:33:39Trimble on third, Trimble on first, here's the ball inside.
- 1:33:43And the count one and one on Herndon.
- 1:33:57Now the set by Palmer, he pitches a slow curve hit on the ground, a short baby two, over to second for one, relay to first, not inside.
- 1:34:06He went in on Dower and he didn't get anything on the relay, over to Murray.
- 1:34:12And the Tigers got another run to make it 13 to one.
- 1:34:15It'll be an RBI for Herndon on the fourth out at second base of Trimble.
- 1:34:27Whitaker crossing the plate on the fourth out to make it 13 to one, Detroit.
- 1:34:31Here comes a walk-in pass.
- 1:34:35He came in the back for Parrish and the first inning in Dura Walk, that's been his only time at the plate, so his average is still 279.
- 1:34:44Palmer delivers and John takes a fastball high, ball one.
- 1:34:48The throw by Dower was a strange looking one, it was very accurate, but he didn't get anything out of the reason, the ball was slipping out of his hand as he threw.
- 1:34:59Now Palmer and Schulach are having a conversation, Schulach yelling something out to Palmer.
- 1:35:05They meet halfway between the mound and home plate.
- 1:35:14Ball one, a count on John B. Walkenfuss here in the Tigers' second inning of the first game.
- 1:35:22And the pitch on the way, he takes the ball low, and a good stop by Nolan.
- 1:35:272-0 to count on John, he'll be followed by Gibson.
- 1:35:37Palmer delivers, here's a foul back this way, and the county's 2-1.
- 1:35:42I suppose Palmer was telling Schulach, I've got a good bye for you on briefs.
- 1:35:54Now the 2-1 pitch, big slow curve, grab the outside corner going by, 2-2 to count on Walkenfuss.
- 1:36:052-out, 1-on, here's the set by the right-hander, he pitches, fastball struck him out, and the Tigers are out in the second inning.
- 1:36:14They get two and up their lead to 13-1 at the end of two.
- 1:36:21Why should you insure your home automobile and your life with a farmer's agent?
- 1:36:25For some very good reasons.
- 1:36:27Farmer's agents are professionals who realize that the best way to succeed is in doing an outstanding job for their clients.
- 1:36:34Farmer's Insurance Group, FIG, does business on the principle of keeping the cost of your insurance down and the amount of your protection up.
- 1:36:43Sometimes this means your agent will recommend that you carry a higher deductible on your auto or home,
- 1:36:48or tailor a life insurance program to fit both your family and business needs.
- 1:36:53Mostly it means looking at your situation from your viewpoint, not theirs.
- 1:36:58So call your fast, fair, friendly farmer's agent real soon.
- 1:37:02He's Dave Giancola, it could live over in Frayser, 296-3844.
- 1:37:09And Warren residents can call Mike Dennis at 978-0132.
- 1:37:16You see, both of them are fast, fair, friendly, farmer's insurance group agents.
- 1:37:23It's not enough that a new broom sweeps clean.

- 1:38:03The Tigers lead, Baltimore 13-1.
- 1:38:05We're going into the third inning.
- 1:38:07Bumbree, the leadoff man, will resume that role here in the third, the first time up, starting the ballgame.
- 1:38:14He bounced to Lou Whitaker.
- 1:38:15Petrie, working with a 12-run lead at 13-1 in the first game of a doubleheader on the Threatening Skies at Tiger Stadium.
- 1:38:23Ford and Ripken are scheduled to follow here on the Oriole third inning.
- 1:38:28And Delivers and Bumbree fouls it away, strike one.
- 1:38:34Well, we've had word from the press box that the Tigers' 10 straight hits in the first inning ties the American League record set back in 19-1
- 1:38:45by the Boston Red Sox against the old Milwaukee team in that first year of the American League.
- 1:38:51There's a strike called on Bumbree, two strikes.
- 1:38:54The Major League record is 12 consecutive hits shared by the St. Louis Cardinals and the Brooklyn Dodgers.
- 1:39:01The Cardinals in 19-20, the Dodgers in 19-30.
- 1:39:06Strike two pitch to Bumbree, swung on the ground ball to Whitaker again.
- 1:39:10He's got it, the flip to Leach, he got him out.
- 1:39:13One up and one away.
- 1:39:15Bumbree goes down the same way, they got him in the first.
- 1:39:18Let's pause here briefly for station identification.
- 1:39:21This is the Detroit Tiger baseball network.
- 1:39:25And you're listening to Tiger Baseball on Radio 76, the great boys of the Great Lakes,
- 1:39:30and WJR Detroit.
- 1:39:32Dan Ford, fly to center, first trip.
- 1:39:43There's another fly ball to center, and here comes Lemon, he's got it.
- 1:39:47So the Orioles have repeated their first inning so far.
- 1:39:51Bumbree bouncing to second and Ford flying to center.
- 1:39:55Here comes Repkin, let's see if the carbon paper keeps on working.
- 1:39:59He struck out in the first inning.
- 1:40:14Tigers lead 13-1, Repkin at the plate now.
- 1:40:19Vietre has a walk one and a struck out one.
- 1:40:26I feel we'll be deep and straight away on Cal Repkin Jr.
- 1:40:37Here's the pitch by Dan, and there's a tapper hit to a third.
- 1:40:40Contiki Chargers can't handle it, he tried to glove it, and couldn't get it.
- 1:40:45It will be scored as a single.
- 1:40:46He was charging and he met the ball about halfway between the plate and third.
- 1:40:51Probably didn't have a chance anyway.
- 1:41:03Here's Eddie Murray who's single and scored the Baltimore run in the second.
- 1:41:07He took second on the Wildfish, went to third on the bounce out by Lowenstein,
- 1:41:11and scored on Singleton's ground out.
- 1:41:15Tigers lead it 13-1.
- 1:41:22Here's the set the pitch, Murray fouls it away, that'll be in the seats over back of the Tiger Dugout.
- 1:41:41Crowd keeps on coming in, we'll have a good attendance here.
- 1:41:45A lot of folks for these Triniters come in in the middle of the first game.
- 1:41:51Have their evening meal with us and enjoy baseball.
- 1:41:54There's a breaking ball, oh, one and one.
- 1:42:00Thirteen runs and thirteen hits for the Tigers, one run and three hits for the Orioles.
- 1:42:05The Orioles have made two errors, the Tigers have not made any.
- 1:42:09It's the first of a double header here at the quarter, Michigan in Trumbull tonight.
- 1:42:14Fastball swing and a miss by Murray, fired that one past him toward the outside, one and two on Eddie.
- 1:42:24Eddie talking on their pregame show about his family, twelve youngsters.
- 1:42:30The boys and the girls both played baseball.
- 1:42:34Here's the one-two pitch to him now and he takes the ball, oh, that one hit in front of the plate.
- 1:42:45Ripken on with two down in the third inning for the Birds.
- 1:42:50Two to the count on Eddie Murray.
- 1:42:53What a one-two punch this is in the middle part of the batting order for Joe Aldebelli.
- 1:42:58Ripken followed by Murray.
- 1:43:03Now Petrie to the set position, oh, that he pitches and Murray bows it away over on the third base side.
- 1:43:19Let's send a special hello to Mr. Grabowski and the Oakwood Hospital.
- 1:43:28Longtime Tigers supporter.
- 1:43:33That breeze is blowing out toward left now.
- 1:43:35Here's the two-two pitch again to Eddie Murray.
- 1:43:38And he takes a breaking ball, oh, full count on him.
- 1:43:49What can pass during the catching paris third?
- 1:43:51If we told you a little bit of the weather, he batted one time and then after the Tigers got a large lead,
- 1:43:57Sparky Anderson removed him in favor of walking first.
- 1:44:01Here's the three-two pitch to Murray on the way.
- 1:44:04He swings on a ground ball off of the pitches picked up by Krzyczkiewicz, but no play and Murray has a single.
- 1:44:12I don't know exactly where that hit Petrie, maybe on the foot.
- 1:44:16He's waving and walking fast back.
- 1:44:19He's mad now because he didn't get that ball.
- 1:44:21That's right. He's mad. He's not hurt. His feelings are hurt more than anything else.
- 1:44:26He's just really kicking around there.
- 1:44:29He thought he should have had that ball.
- 1:44:31It'll be scored as a hit for Murray. That's his second hit, two for two for Eddie.
- 1:44:35And it'll bring up John Lowenstein, the veteran outfielder.
- 1:44:41Samuels coming in and trying to settle down his pitcher Petrie a little bit.
- 1:44:52Lowenstein's been on the big league scene since 1970. He broke in with Cleveland that year.
- 1:44:58Left hand about a waiting and the pitch is high to him, ball one.
- 1:45:06University of California at Riverside is schooled. He made it in anthropology.
- 1:45:15A 1-0 pitch to John. He takes it high and wide, a 2-0 on Lowenstein.
- 1:45:36Feature ready again and sets and deals. It is a strike on the inside corner.
- 1:45:43He backed away from that one, but it nipped the corner on him.
- 1:45:49John just let the bat slip out of his hands in disbelief.
- 1:45:54And he gave Mr. Shulock the old-family look on that one.
- 1:46:00Here's a 2-1 pitch coming now to John Lowenstein.
- 1:46:06Here it comes. He takes it. It's a strike. That's 2-2.
- 1:46:21Here's a fellow who seems to get better each year rather than the other way around,
- 1:46:27which is the norm for baseball players. Here's, at least at his age, here's a 2-2 pitch.
- 1:46:33And a 2-2 on the inside corner.
- 1:46:39Here's a 2-2 pitch coming.
- 1:46:44And a 2-2 on the inside corner.
- 1:46:49Here's a 2-2 pitch coming.
- 1:47:04And a 2-2 pitch coming.
- 1:47:20And a 2-2 pitch coming.
- 1:47:35And a 2-2 pitch coming.
- 1:47:50And a 2-2 pitch coming.
- 1:48:05And a 2-2 pitch coming.
- 1:48:20And a 2-2 pitch coming.
- 1:48:35And a 2-2 pitch coming.
- 1:48:50And a 2-2 pitch coming.
- 1:49:05And a 2-2 pitch coming.
- 1:49:20And a 2-2 pitch coming.
- 1:49:35And a 2-2 pitch coming.
- 1:49:50And a 2-2 pitch coming.
- 1:50:05And a 2-2 pitch coming.
- 1:50:20And a 2-2 pitch coming.
- 1:50:35And a 2-2 pitch coming.
- 1:50:50And a 2-2 pitch coming.
- 1:51:03And a 2-2 pitch coming.
- 1:51:08And a 2-2 pitch coming.
- 1:51:19And a 2-2 pitch coming.
- 1:51:31And a 2-2 pitch coming.
- 1:51:34One out, nobody on.
- 1:51:35The Tigers are batting in the third.
- 1:51:39They've got Gulliver very wide of the bag at third for Baltimore.
- 1:51:44Leach steps out again.
- 1:51:46Palmer not quite ready.
- 1:51:47They can't get a tune here with each other.
- 1:51:55Here's a 1-2 delivery.
- 1:51:57Swung on, fly ball to right.
- 1:51:58And a 2-2 pitch coming.
- 1:52:08And that Philadelphia game,
- 1:52:10Twy Nited-Philly,
- 1:52:12the Phils lead Chicago 5-3 there in the fifth inning.
- 1:52:17Here's the pitch to Leach.
- 1:52:19And it's a wide 1-2-2.
- 1:52:21One afternoon game in the majors.
- 1:52:23And the National League Pittsburgh beat the Mets 4-0.
- 1:52:27And yet the Minnesota White Sox game in Chicago rained out tonight.
- 1:52:31Here's a line shot foul on the change-up again down in the bullpen.
- 1:52:35Remember Palmer's had a lot of ailments over the years.
- 1:52:38And early, very early in his career,
- 1:52:42he had a lot of back trouble.
- 1:52:44And Dr. Russell Wright was a team physician here in Detroit at that time.
- 1:52:48And he put a lift in Jim Shue and corrected that.
- 1:52:52And he came back after that.
- 1:52:54And a foul out of play back on the screen.
- 1:52:57Palmer had been sent down to the minors for almost a whole year.
- 1:53:04And Dr. Wright found out that the problem was that one leg was longer than the other one.
- 1:53:11And the left cured that problem.
- 1:53:14Now the 2-2 pitch to Leach.
- 1:53:16He swings and there's a base hit to left.
- 1:53:18The line shot to the field off the bat of Rick Leach.
- 1:53:28A man out and a man out.
- 1:53:30Here comes Chad Lemon.
- 1:53:32Chester has tripled and flied to left.
- 1:53:35He did both of those things in the opening inning.
- 1:53:38He made the final out in that 11-run first inning for the Tigers.
- 1:53:44Now he's up with a man out and a man out in the third.
- 1:53:53Time called at the plate. Lemon steps away for a moment.
- 1:54:06Palmer to the set position delivers.
- 1:54:08Watch out. That one almost hit him.
- 1:54:11Now that was so slow he wouldn't mind being hit by that one.
- 1:54:21Just the reflex action got him out of the way.
- 1:54:35Here's a little topper in front of the plate.
- 1:54:37He's picked up by Nolan. He'll go to first to Murray with it and Lemon is out and Leach takes second.
- 1:54:46Wilson will be the battered.
- 1:54:48Glenn had a single in the first inning. He's had one for two.
- 1:54:53We're talking about Palmer winning 20 games in eight different seasons.
- 1:55:01Palmer and Lefty Grove did that.
- 1:55:03Johnson did it 12 times and Cy Young was a 20-game winner 16 seasons.
- 1:55:15Warren Spahn and Matheson 13 times a piece to reach the 20-victory mark.
- 1:55:23Wilson takes the ball outside.
- 1:55:3313-1 the Tigers in the lead against the Orioles in the third inning.
- 1:55:38Here's the pitch. Swung on and bowled away. One-on-one the count on Wilson.
- 1:55:48That Philly-Chicago game is now 6-3. They've completed five at Philadelphia's Twilight game.
- 1:56:02Leach down the line from second base. Palmer delivers. Fastball outside to Wilson. 2-1 on Glenn.
- 1:56:10Just Martinez started and was credited with one-third of an inning. Charged with seven runs and six hits.
- 1:56:18That's when Palmer took over. He worked the rest of the time. Here's the 2-1 pitch.
- 1:56:24Swung on the ground ball to Ripken near the bag and second. He goes right through his legs and the run goes score.
- 1:56:30He's complete across the plate. Ripken went a little bit to the glove side and had a routine play. The ball went right through his legs.
- 1:56:44That puts Wilson at first base. Leach was able to score.
- 1:56:54And the Tigers now lead it 14-1. Here's Krincky with two-for-two singles each time against his old teammates.
- 1:57:07Wayne's brought that average up to 273. And he cuts and misses on a Palmer breaking ball.
- 1:57:21Outfield plays him to left. There's a cut and a miss on a high hard one. Two strikes on Wayne Krincky.
- 1:57:33Not only do they play him to left, but very shallow. Look how shallow Shelby is in center. Yeah, he's way in.
- 1:57:46Strike two delivery is a strike called. The big floater got over. He's out on strike. The Tigers get one.
- 1:57:54At the end of three, Detroit 14 Baltimore 1.
- 1:58:12Budweiser, proud sponsor of the 1984 U.S. Olympic team, salutes America's Olympic coaches, the team behind the team.
- 1:58:21I tell them to give positions, you've got to set your stance, concentrate on your force motion. It's got some pressure.
- 1:58:27Then when you know the time is right, you attack. Because at this level, everyone knows their stuff. So to win, you've got to get there first.
- 1:58:35The Olympics take teamwork and Budweiser is proud to be part of that team.
- 1:58:48Believe me, by the time I get to HLA, they'll be ready.

- 1:59:34Remember the last time you enjoyed the naturally smoked goodness of a honeybaked ham? Why wait for another special occasion?
- 1:59:41Call 689-4890.
- 1:59:49Baltimore batting now in the fourth inning. Tigers lead them 14 to 1. Let's tune in on Paul Caring.
- 1:59:54Alright, Ernie Ken Singleton will lead it off. He drove in the Baltimore run with a bounce out.
- 1:59:58And there's a grounder to the right side. Leach comes wide to his right. Has it. Flips to P3 and they get it.
- 2:00:04One pitch, one away in the Baltimore fourth inning.
- 2:00:11Well, the biggest threat right now it would seem would be from the weather.
- 2:00:17It has become increasingly dark overhead. Of course it's bound to as we lose the sunshine here in the Detroit area.
- 2:00:27We haven't seen the sun since early today because of the precipitation, the growing clouds that came in.
- 2:00:37Rain held off the start of this game for an official 22 minutes but it's not been interrupted.
- 2:00:42Here's Joe Nolan. It's low for ball one on Nolan.
- 2:00:47Better and left hand hitting catcher singled off the face of the wall in right field in the second inning.
- 2:00:57P3 ready to work the pitch to Nolan. He takes low again 2-0.
- 2:01:06Dan given a very big lead. Eleven runs in the very first inning.
- 2:01:15Duo pitch to Nolan on the corner for a strike. Got it right on the inside corner to Joe.
- 2:01:23Dan said he learned a lesson with a big lead over in Milwaukee. You may recall that game.
- 2:01:28Tigers had jumped out to a five to nothing lead early. And he had a no hitter going for four innings.
- 2:01:34There's a foul back up to the press box. By the bottom of the fifth inning the Tigers had given P3 a five to nothing lead.
- 2:01:41And that's when Ted Simmons and Mark Brohard hit back to back home runs off P3.
- 2:01:47He's had to learn a lesson from it. You've still got to pitch your ball game regardless of the score.
- 2:01:52The stuff about just rearing back and getting it over he now doesn't believe in.
- 2:01:59So he's trying to pitch his game here tonight. He struck him out. Nolan took a look at a hard one on the outside corner.
- 2:02:08Three strikeouts for P3.
- 2:02:14And that'll bring up Gulliver. Long time Tiger farm hand to Glenn Gulliver.
- 2:02:23A man from Allen Park left hand hitting third baseman. Good season down at Rochester. He swings. There's a drive to deep right center field going back is Lemon.
- 2:02:31He's there now. He's got it. And the side is out in order. After three and a half innings Tigers 14, Baltimore 1.
- 2:02:43Lou Whitaker leads off the fourth inning for Detroit. And the first slow one is in from Palmer for a called strike on Lou.
- 2:02:50Gets him all that motion that big leg kick of his and then lobs it in.
- 2:02:55The delivery. There's another slow one hit on the ground. A second base dollar has a little trouble with it but gloves it throws him out at first base.
- 2:03:03One out on the Tiger fourth inning. He's got a couple of defensive changes again for the Orioles behind the plate.
- 2:03:09John Stapharo now replaces Joe Nolan and Todd Cruz is in the game playing third base.
- 2:03:16He replaces Glenn Gulliver. So Joe Altavelli has made five switches defensively. Plus a switch on the mound already in this game.
- 2:03:27One out. Nobody on here on the Tiger fourth inning. And here's Alan Trammel who has three singles and three trips.
- 2:03:34He checks his swing. It's a little high from Palmer for ball one.
- 2:03:38Now they say the first base umpire Rick Reid said he went too far. Stapharo appealing to the open side.
- 2:03:47So it's strike one on Alan. There's a high fly ball. That feels deep but not deep enough I don't believe.
- 2:03:54Young at the wall makes the catch. Well he was right there on the edge of the track anyway.
- 2:03:59A towering fly ball by Trammel. Bearing deep to left and they finally get him out. Two out on the Tiger fourth inning.
- 2:04:08Here's Herndon. Larry has walked hit a two run homer and bounced into a force out and that ground out got in another Tiger run.
- 2:04:15So he has three RBIs. Every Tiger starter with a run batted in with the exception of Crenjicki who has two hits.
- 2:04:25There's a slow curve inverse strike. Now Palmer ready pitches. Hard one is high. One and one on Herndon.
- 2:04:40Herndon I'd like to pass along our best wishes to a great Tiger fan over at Olivet-Mazarin College.
- 2:04:46Wayne Hall. Stick with us Wayne. There's a pitch outside for a ball. Group down for Mackinac City headed by Mary Lee Winters.
- 2:05:02Group of 17 make a long trip down from the straights to see the Tigers tonight.
- 2:05:07There's a line drive to center field. A base hit for Herndon. Larry has his second hit. That's the 15th of the night for the Tigers.
- 2:05:17It comes with two out here in the fourth inning. Let's pause for station identification. This is the Detroit Tiger Baseball Network.
- 2:05:27And this is WJR Detroit, the flagship station for Tiger baseball. WJR offers complete sports coverage at 76 a.m.
- 2:05:40John Walkenfuss batting. He takes a called strike from Palmer. Fuss came in when Lance Perrish's turn was up again in the first inning and he pinch hit for him.
- 2:05:51He walked, struck out the next time. Slow curve, dips a little bit low. One and one on Fuss.
- 2:06:0414 to one, the Tigers lead here in the bottom of the fourth inning. Thread of rain still persists.
- 2:06:13Palmer's pitch. There's a slider that got in for a strike one and two on Fuss.
- 2:06:21Here's a Tiger birthday salute on our 87th birthday to a great Tiger fan on the east side of Detroit. Rose Almancheck. Happy birthday to Rose.
- 2:06:31Fastball in the corner. Fuss is up looking. Another strike out for Palmer. And the Tigers for the first time in this game do not score. After four innings, it's Detroit 14, Baltimore 1.
- 2:06:49We have some more changes for the Tigers. Marty Castillo's gone in to play third. Wayne Crenchicki moves to second replacing Lou Whitaker.
- 2:06:56And Lynn Jones is now in left field taking over for Larry Herndon. Top of the fifth inning here at Tiger Stadium. 14 to one, the Tigers have the lead.
- 2:07:06Somebody had left a batting helmet on the outfield out there. And just before the inning was began, they decided to pick it up.
- 2:07:16It's a Tiger batting helmet though I think, even though Jimmy Williams is going to throw it in the Baltimore dugout.
- 2:07:26Here's the pitch to Dower and he fouls it back. Strike one on Rich.
- 2:07:32Petrie has an odd four hits. They've all been singles. He's walked one and struck out three.
- 2:07:42They kick the pitch by Petrie. There's a ground ball passed them on to Crenchicki at second. They toss to Leach. One away in the fifth inning.
- 2:07:52That'll bring up John Shelby. Good looking outfielder for the Orioles.
- 2:08:06Shelby is switch hitter. Bat's left handed against Petrie. He's up for the first time in the ball game hitting two fifty nine.
- 2:08:12Five home runs, twenty five runs batted in. He cuts and pops one down the left field line. That's a tough chance. In comes Lynn Jones.
- 2:08:20He makes the catch.
- 2:08:28Jones gathers in the pop fly from Shelby. Two out in the fifth inning.
- 2:08:36And the batter will be Tito Landrum.
- 2:08:44Tito inserted in the lineup to play in right field for Dan Ford in the third inning. Takes a called strike.
- 2:09:00Originally on the Cardinal organization, Landrum is looking at another called strike. Two quick ones out.
- 2:09:08Three sixty four in limited action for the Orioles. One home run, a couple of RBI's.
- 2:09:18Now the kick to pitch by Petrie. Tapped off the end of the bat. Petrie comes off the mound toward first. Fields it. Tags the runner.
- 2:09:24And that's all for the Orioles and the money's in the bank. After four and a half innings, Tigers 14. Baltimore 1.
- 2:09:34Another change for the Orioles in the field. Bob Bonner is now playing second base, replacing Rich Dower.
- 2:09:44Here's Kirk Gibson leading off the Tiger fifth inning. Fourteen to one, the Tigers lead. They got eleven runs in the first inning.
- 2:09:50Jim Palmer, who relieved in the first inning, came on for Dennis Martinez. Still in there.
- 2:09:58The pitch to Gibson is a high outside fastball. Gibson has tripled in a run in the first inning. Since then he has struck out twice against Palmer.
- 2:10:08The wind up by Big Jim. He delivers on the corner for a strike one and one.
- 2:10:16Gibson, Leach and Lemon, the three do up here in the Tiger fifth inning. Fouled back off the glass just in front of the Baltimore radio booth.
- 2:10:32Shaking up Tom Marr and John Miller a little bit over there.
- 2:10:41Of course that first inning shook him up a little bit too I think. The one-two pitch.
- 2:10:46Fung on and missed. He struck him out. So that's the third straight time Palmer's been able to strike out Gibson.
- 2:10:54The batter now will be Leach, who has batted once and single.
- 2:10:59Ernie and I would like to pass along a special wishes to a great Tiger fan out at Harper Hospital.
- 2:11:07Just had surgery. Recovering there this week. Tim O'Connell, our best wishes from the Tigers.
- 2:11:15On behalf of Jim Schmeichel and his wife Pat.
- 2:11:21Jim Marr.
- 2:11:25Careless clubhouse manager, director here at Tiger Stadium. High fly ball lifted to left center field.
- 2:11:32Over Shelby and Young. The center field. Nope, the left field of Young is going to make the catch just on the edge of the track.
- 2:11:39Two out in the fifth inning.
- 2:11:45A ball that either one of them could catch, could handle.
- 2:11:52Generally a ball hit there is given to the center fielder to gather in, but this time he gave way to Young.
- 2:11:59Here's Lemon. Cat tripled in a run in the Tiger first inning.
- 2:12:05Since then he's hit a pop fly to left and bounced out to the catcher.
- 2:12:10A dribbler in front of the plate.
- 2:12:22A one side curve from Palmer.
- 2:12:31Jim kicks and delivers. There's a high fly ball hit to medium depth right center field.
- 2:12:37Center fielder Shelby over. He's got it. And the Tigers are out quickly in the fifth inning after five.
- 2:12:43Tigers 14, Orioles 1.
- 2:12:50Herbie Redmond often is capped to the crowd here at Tiger Stadium after they finish grooming the infield.
- 2:12:56We finished five innings. Tigers with 11 runs in the first inning.
- 2:13:01Lead 14 to 1 and here comes the rain. It looked like it's going to be coming down for a long time.
- 2:13:08Time called by the umpires and they're going to bring the tarp out.
- 2:13:12Well, we'd heard reports that the rain was going to come in again about seven o'clock. It didn't.
- 2:13:17This game is right now an official ballgame. They've completed five innings here at Tiger Stadium.
- 2:13:23The Orioles about to come to bat against Dan Petrie in the sixth inning.
- 2:13:28When the rains came in again, rain hit the stadium shortly before five o'clock.
- 2:13:36And it came down hard for about 20 minutes worth before it let up.
- 2:13:40And it caused a delay in the start of the contest officially for 22 minutes.
- 2:13:45But now it has come in again here with a clock reading I guess 742 when the announcement first was, or when the signal was first given.
- 2:13:57But this is an official ballgame right now.
- 2:14:00Of course the Tigers and Orioles want to finish this one and play another one tonight.
- 2:14:06They've got single game scheduled tomorrow night and Thursday night to complete this four game series.
- 2:14:12We're playing a make-up game in a sense right now making up this Twineye doubleheader from the Orioles' first trip in here to Detroit.
- 2:14:32Now the grounds crew has unrolled or taken the tarp off the roller.
- 2:14:36They've got it unfolded now and get it over the diamond. They quickly first put on those separate pieces of tarp over home plate and on the mound.
- 2:14:45And as usual the grounds crew under Frank Fennig does a great job here at Tiger Stadium.
- 2:14:51They may be just about the quickest in the league in covering the playing surface.
- 2:14:57While we wait for this rain, see how long it goes, we've got some lightning overhead too.
- 2:15:03Let's check the scores pretty much up to date on those.
- 2:15:06This afternoon in the National League, the Pirates shut out the Mets 4-0 on a two-hitter by McWilliams.
- 2:15:13His 15th win against six defeats this year.
- 2:15:17Lynch started for New York and had took his 10th loss each 10-10.
- 2:15:21Dave Parker, homered in the game for Pittsburgh, his 12th of the year.
- 2:15:25He had only 3112 at Shea Stadium in New York today.
- 2:15:30Can you believe that?
- 2:15:33A twilight game at Philadelphia. The Phillies hosting the Chicago Cubs.
- 2:15:38And they've completed seven and a half innings now.
- 2:15:41And it's Philadelphia 6, the Cubs 5 in the tight one.
- 2:15:44For the Phillies, Gross started, followed by Hernandez in the fifth and Anderson in the eighth inning.
- 2:15:49For the Cubs, it was Crouch the starter. Patterson came on in the second. Johnson in the fifth.
- 2:15:55Forty in the seventh inning.
- 2:15:58Bill Buckner has hit his 16th home run for Chicago.
- 2:16:03And Gary Woods hit a two-run homer his third of the year for the Cubs.
- 2:16:07But they trail 6-5 in the bottom of the eighth inning at Philadelphia.
- 2:16:11Going into the action, the Phillies had a two-game lead over Montreal.
- 2:16:16And the Pirates, the Pirates picking up a half game with their afternoon win.
- 2:16:21At Montreal, the Cardinals didn't score in the first inning.
- 2:16:24That one is underway with Bob Forch going for St. Louis against Bill Gullickson of Montreal.
- 2:16:30Cincinnati is at Atlanta. It's Frank Bistori pitching for the Reds.
- 2:16:34And Phil Necro for Atlanta, the game just beginning.
- 2:16:37And later on the coast, Houston is at Los Angeles.
- 2:16:40And the Padres play at San Francisco.
- 2:16:42And the American League got three games just getting underway now.
- 2:16:46The Yankees are playing at Boston.
- 2:16:48John Matafusko pitching for New York and that one against Bruce First.
- 2:16:52Seattle didn't score in the first inning at Toronto.
- 2:16:54The Jays are batting.
- 2:16:56It's Mike Moore for Seattle.
- 2:16:58And Dave Steeve pitching for the Blue Jays.
- 2:17:01Milwaukee at Cleveland.
- 2:17:03Mike Caldwell on the mound for the Brewers.
- 2:17:05And Rick Sutcliffe is the Cleveland starter.
- 2:17:08A Minnesota-Chicago game was postponed because of this rain,
- 2:17:13perhaps the same rain that's falling here at Tiger Stadium right now.
- 2:17:17And they're going to make up that game at Comiskey Park,
- 2:17:19hopefully with a Twineye doubleheader tomorrow.
- 2:17:22California, Kansas City coming up a bit later,
- 2:17:25as is the Oakland at Texas ball game.
- 2:17:28We're getting rain here at Tiger Stadium right now that has suspended play
- 2:17:33here after five completed innings.
- 2:17:36And the opener of a Twineye doubleheader.
- 2:17:40Now in case you tuned in late and wondered how the heck the Tigers
- 2:17:43scored 11 runs in the first inning, let's go over that.
- 2:17:46Dennis Martinez was the Oriole starter.
- 2:17:49He got Lou Whitaker to bounce out unassisted to first,
- 2:17:53the first man up, and then everything fell apart.
- 2:17:55The Tigers sent 12 men to the plate after the bounce-off by Whitaker
- 2:18:02without the Orioles getting it out, without anybody being retired.
- 2:18:06Alan Trammell followed Whitaker's bounce-off with a single center.
- 2:18:09He promptly stole second and stole third.
- 2:18:12Then Larry Herndon was walked.
- 2:18:17And as Herndon was taking off to steal second base,
- 2:18:20a bad throw by the starting catcher Joe Nolan,
- 2:18:23skipped on into center field.
- 2:18:25Trammell came in to score the innings first run and Herndon took third.
- 2:18:28He scored on a single center by Lance Parrish.
- 2:18:31Then Lance raced in from first base on a triple to left center by Kirk Gibson.
- 2:18:36Gibson then scored on a single to center by Henes Cabell through a drawn-in infield.
- 2:18:40Chet Lemon tripled to deep center field off the flagpole
- 2:18:44to score Cabell all the way from first base.
- 2:18:47Then Glenn Wilson wrapped a single through the drawn-in infield
- 2:18:50to score Lemon from third.
- 2:18:52That was all for Martinez.
- 2:18:54He had given up six hits and he left a man on.
- 2:18:57Well, he promptly scored when Jim Palmer, in relief,
- 2:19:01gave up a pop single to Wayne Crenchicki,
- 2:19:03and Lou Whitaker came up and hit a three-run homer
- 2:19:08into the seats in right field, lose 12th of the year.
- 2:19:11Alan Trammell then picked up his second hit of the inning,
- 2:19:14a loop single to left field,
- 2:19:16and Larry Herndon followed with his 19th home run of the year,
- 2:19:19a two-run homer.
- 2:19:21The inning continued as John Walkenfuss batted for Lance Parrish.
- 2:19:24He walked.
- 2:19:26Gibson then struck out for out number two.
- 2:19:28Henes Cabell beat out an infield hit, two on,
- 2:19:31before Chet Lemon ended the inning with a pop fly to left field.
- 2:19:36Sixteen men went to the plate in the first inning for the Tigers.
- 2:19:40They got 11 runs, all of them earned on 11 hits.
- 2:19:43There were two errors, but because of the way the Tigers kept on hitting,
- 2:19:47those runs were all earned, and two men were left on base.
- 2:19:51The Tigers added two runs in the second inning.
- 2:19:54With one out, Crenchicki got his second straight hit, an infield hit,
- 2:19:58and then Whitaker walked.
- 2:20:00Alan Trammell's single scored Crenchicki,
- 2:20:02with Whitaker moving to third,
- 2:20:04and he scored when Larry Herndon bounced into a force out at second.
- 2:20:08Rich Dower had the ball slip out of his hands,
- 2:20:10trying to relay to first to complete the double play,
- 2:20:13and the Tigers had a 13-1 lead at that point.
- 2:20:16They added one more run in the third inning.
- 2:20:19With one out, Henes Cabell, or, I beg your pardon, Rick Leach,
- 2:20:22single to left field, moved to second on a bounce out by Lemon.
- 2:20:26And then Glenn Wilson hit a ball right at shortstop Cal Ripken.
- 2:20:30He brought the glove up too quickly,
- 2:20:32and he put the glove between the legs for an error,
- 2:20:35and Leach was able to score from second base to make it 14-1,
- 2:20:38and that's where we stand right now.
- 2:20:40The only Orioles run came in the second inning.
- 2:20:43Eddie Murray led off with a single, took second on a wild pitch,
- 2:20:46third on a bounce out, and scored on a ground out by Ken Singleton.
- 2:20:51Petrie allowing two hits in that second inning, both singles,
- 2:20:54and in the third inning he gave up a couple of infield hits with two out,
- 2:20:58but then struck out Loewenstein to end the inning,
- 2:21:01and Loewenstein has set down a side in order in the fourth and fifth innings,
- 2:21:05and was about to work on the Orioles here in the sixth inning
- 2:21:08when the rain began to come down.
- 2:21:10It has abated somewhat, but it is still coming down rather steadily
- 2:21:15at Tiger Stadium at the moment.
- 2:21:19Now the crowd beginning to cheer because they don't see the driving rain coming down,
- 2:21:24but if you look at the puddles on the turf that's covering the playing surface,
- 2:21:29you can see the steady precipitation out here.
- 2:21:36The Tigers win the opener of this Twineye Doubleheader,
- 2:21:40a five-inning ball game, they win it 14-1,
- 2:21:44and the second game of the scheduled doubleheader tonight
- 2:21:47will be made up as part of a Twineye Doubleheader tomorrow,
- 2:21:51and that will begin at 5.30 at Tiger Stadium,
- 2:21:55and the broadcast coverage beginning at 5.15 tomorrow.
- 2:21:59So the Tigers and Orioles play one official game tonight,
- 2:22:03albeit shortened by the heavy rains here at Tiger Stadium.
- 2:22:07The umpires have delayed the start of the game for 22 minutes,
- 2:22:11and then after five innings had been completed,
- 2:22:14the Orioles were coming to bat in the sixth.
- 2:22:16The rains came in again, and the umpires waited an hour and 33 minutes
- 2:22:21before determining that the field was unplayable here at Tiger Stadium.
- 2:22:24So the Tigers win the opener with a big first inning,
- 2:22:28scoring 11 times in the first inning off the starter,
- 2:22:32Dennis Martinez and his successor, Jim Plummer.
- 2:22:35The Tigers set 16 men to the plate, and during one span,
- 2:22:3912 batters went to the plate without being retired,
- 2:22:44and the Tigers giving Dan Petrie that big 11-run lead in the first inning.
- 2:22:49So Petrie allowed just one run in the second inning,
- 2:22:52the Tigers added two runs in the second and an unearned run in the third inning.
- 2:22:57Plummer seemed to settle things down a little bit in the fourth and fifth innings,
- 2:23:01and the Orioles weren't doing much with Petrie,
- 2:23:04who had sent them down in order in the fourth and fifth innings,
- 2:23:07and after the fifth inning had been completed,
- 2:23:10the Orioles had that in the sixth just before a pitch was thrown.
- 2:23:14The rain came in, and after a wait of an hour and 33 minutes,
- 2:23:17the game has been called at the end of five innings.
- 2:23:21The totals in the game for Detroit, 14 runs, 15 hits, no errors.
- 2:23:25For Baltimore, one run, four hits and three errors.
- 2:23:29Petrie gets the victory, his 18th against nine defeats.
- 2:23:33Dennis Martinez started, did not survive that wild first inning,
- 2:23:36and he suffered his 15th defeat. He's won seven times.
- 2:23:40The game, what there was of it played, took one hour and 51 minutes.
- 2:23:45hele.
