Speaker 4: Hello, ladies and gentlemen, This is Carl Lee with Let's Talk.
• 0:46
Speaker 4: I have my two co hosts in the building, Lisa
• 0:48
Speaker 4: Odie and Hollis Lewis.
• 0:51
Speaker 2: Ladies and gentlemen, this is today.
• 0:54
Speaker 4: We're gonna have a very very very very special guest
• 0:58
Speaker 4: that I think everybody, everybody will appreciate. And I'm actually
• 1:03
Speaker 4: really really curious to know a lot of things that
• 1:07
Speaker 4: I don't know about this specific person. But we have,
• 1:11
Speaker 4: ladies and gentlemen on the phone. We have Jim McMahon,
• 1:15
Speaker 4: quarterback for the Chicago Bears.
• 1:18
Speaker 2: Former quarterback the Chicago Bears.
• 1:23
Speaker 4: With the b yu Okay drafted number one with the
• 1:29
Speaker 4: Chicago Bears in eighty two, played fifteen seasons in the NFL,
• 1:38
Speaker 4: and he also was with the Packers. Oh, Lisa, I
• 1:42
Speaker 4: don't think we have a Packer. We have a Packer
• 1:44
Speaker 4: fan here too, Jim, so she.
• 1:48
Speaker 2: Can appreciate that is in the College Hall of Fame and.
• 1:54
Speaker 4: Played on I'm gonna say, hollis probably one of the
• 1:58
Speaker 4: best football teams that I had ever been a part of.
• 2:03
Speaker 4: And again I saw I played against Montana and Rice
• 2:08
Speaker 4: and that group, but the Chicago Bears was just it
• 2:13
Speaker 4: was just a different thing.
• 2:15
Speaker 2: So, ladies and gentlemen. Jim McMahon, Jim, how you doing?
• 2:19
Speaker 5: Man doing great? Parker doing great? Thanks? Thanks, Well, you know, I.
• 2:32
Speaker 6: I played along, Jim. I already knew that.
• 2:35
  Speaker 2: Yeah she does.
• 2:36
Speaker 4: She does do her research, so she's our researcher for sure.
• 2:40
Speaker 4: And and I dogged her about being a Packer fan.
• 2:43
Speaker 4: And then we had Sterling Sharp on the show, and
• 2:45
Speaker 4: of course she was, you know, she was just falling
• 2:48
Speaker 4: all over the place.
• 2:51
  Speaker 2: But but but.
• 2:52
Speaker 4: Jim, you know, when I when I think back, when
• 2:55
Speaker 4: I look at when I look at the Bears, when
• 2:56
Speaker 4: I think about the Bears and I and I think
• 2:58
Speaker 4: about that team when I look and when I think
• 3:02
  Speaker 4: about it.
• 3:03
Speaker 2: I know the defense was great.
• 3:07
Speaker 4: You and Walter Payton was unbelievable, and you and and
• 3:12
Speaker 4: you had Willie Galt, But that that team as a whole,
• 3:19
Speaker 4: it wasn't really just a defensive team to me playing
• 3:23
Speaker 4: against it, it was you guys were like a family
• 3:28
Speaker 4: of just dogs. Man. It was like you every game
• 3:32
Speaker 4: you all played, it was like you were out there
• 3:34
Speaker 4: on the field and it was like you had to
• 3:37
Speaker 4: watch it because it was so so fast.
• 3:40
  Speaker 2: So physical.
• 3:41
Speaker 4: Do you think that team was probably one of the
• 3:44
Speaker 4: most physical teams, one of the best teams. And I
• 3:47
Speaker 4: know you could be biased, it's on you, but I'm
• 3:49
Speaker 4: a guy that had played against it, and I'm thinking
• 3:52
  Speaker 4: it is.
• 3:53
Speaker 5: I played on seven different teams. But we were you know,
• 3:58
Speaker 5: we were we were well conditioned, that's for damn sure.
• 4:01
Speaker 5: I mean we dick dick of Warris out during the week.
• 4:05
Speaker 5: I mean day was game day was like a day
• 4:07
Speaker 5: off for us because it was it was brutal going
• 4:11
Speaker 5: against you know, we had to go against that defense
• 4:13
  Speaker 5: every day.
• 4:14
Speaker 2: Wow, I didn't think about that.
• 4:15
Speaker 5: Everything everything used to be live you know, there was
• 4:18
Speaker 5: no Buddy buddy periods. I mean it was you know,
• 4:21
Speaker 5: Dick and Buddy did get along, So I mean it
• 4:24
Speaker 5: was our practices were long, and then at the end
• 4:26
Speaker 5: of practice we'd run one hundred yard dashes until he
• 4:30
Speaker 5: got tired of blowing the whistle. So we were we
• 4:32
Speaker 5: were conditioned, and we had a lot of good football players.
• 4:38
Speaker 6: Uh. Hey, Jim, this is Lisa. I'm gonna I'm going
• 4:40
Speaker 6: to take you back. I know in the bio that
• 4:42
Speaker 6: Carl had mentioned you attended b YU, So I'm gonna
• 4:45
Speaker 6: I'm going to take you back a few days to
• 4:47
Speaker 6: that time period. If you don't mind, go ahead. Thanks.
• 4:51
Speaker 6: Uh So, you attended b YU and at that time
• 4:55
Speaker 6: they allowed you to play both baseball and football. I
• 4:58
Speaker 6: know that the baseball was short lived, but they that
• 5:01
Speaker 6: was that was the agreement when you win to b
• 5:03
Speaker 6: BYU to play football, that you could also play baseball
• 5:05
Speaker 6: your freshman year. Knowing now what you know about the
• 5:09
Speaker 6: physical toll of football, what would be some advice you
• 5:14
Speaker 6: would give to a young athlete choosing between college football
• 5:17
  Speaker 6: and baseball.
• 5:19
Speaker 5: Well, I was I wish I could have stuck with baseball.
• 5:22
Speaker 5: That was always my first love. I mean, I thought
• 5:24
Speaker 5: it was a better baseball player, and it just football
• 5:29
Speaker 5: was my scholarship. And my dad said, no, you're going
• 5:31
Speaker 5: to college because I got drafted to play baseball out
• 5:33
Speaker 5: of high school. Wow when you know what round or
• 5:36
Speaker 5: whatever it was. But and he goes, no, you're going
• 5:40
Speaker 5: to go to college. And the other option I had
• 5:43
Speaker 5: was Nevadelas Vegas. It was the only two schools that
• 5:45
Speaker 5: have all the ones that I went to that said
• 5:47
Speaker 5: I could play both sports, right, And of course I
• 5:51
Speaker 5: wanted to go to Vegas. You know, I have a
• 5:52
Speaker 5: normal life, of course, Yeah, but not how it worked out.
• 5:59
Speaker 5: So I played. I played about either six or eight
• 6:02
Speaker 5: games in my freshman year, and and I couldn't get
• 6:06
Speaker 5: out of spring football practice, and so I played a
• 6:08
Speaker 5: game of a doubleheader, and I was playing in the
• 6:10
Speaker 5: outfield and throwing the ball from the outfield and throwing
• 6:13
Speaker 5: it from the pocket is totally different. And I was
• 6:17
Speaker 5: starting to have some arm problems. So I had to
• 6:19
Speaker 5: go with my scholarship, which was football. So yeah, I
• 6:23
Speaker 5: try it all worked out, but I know, I sure
• 6:25
Speaker 5: I wouldn't feel it as bad if I played baseball.
• 6:29
Speaker 7: Now, speaking of your time at BUYU, you probably played
• 6:32
Speaker 7: and you had ultimate success there, winning various awards playing
• 6:36
Speaker 7: the quarterbacks position, and you played in probably what was
• 6:40
Speaker 7: one of the most exciting games in the Holiday Bowl
• 6:42
Speaker 7: during your time, had a great comeback win. So could
• 6:45
Speaker 7: you just speak on them, you know, give us some
• 6:48
Speaker 7: memories of that game.
• 6:51
Speaker 5: I know Dickerson brings it up every time I see him. Yeah,
• 6:55
Speaker 5: he was on that team, Craig James. I mean, they
• 6:58
Speaker 5: had the best team money could buy it at the time.
• 7:00
Speaker 5: You know, there wasn't then I.
• 7:02
Speaker 2: Held well that was that was the other.
• 7:07
Speaker 5: But yeah, they they had to hell of a football
• 7:10
Speaker 5: team and and uh yeah, we got down pretty far
• 7:13
Speaker 5: early in the game and things weren't going well, but
• 7:17
Speaker 5: the second half went okay. In the fourth quarter, well,
• 7:19
Speaker 5: actually the last three or four minutes was a was
• 7:22
Speaker 5: a was the game. I mean how we were down
• 7:24
Speaker 5: twenty points and uh come back and win. You know,
• 7:28
Speaker 5: we scored quickly, got an on side kick, scored again,
• 7:32
Speaker 5: finally stopped him, got the ball back, and you know,
• 7:35
Speaker 5: the last play of the game, throwed up and and
• 7:38
Speaker 5: our tight and catches it for the tie, and then
• 7:41
Speaker 5: the kicker had to come in to win it for us.
• 7:43
Speaker 5: But yeah, that was a pretty exciting last three minutes
• 7:48
  Speaker 5: of the game.
• 7:50
  Speaker 4: Jim, I'm I'm I'm curious about and I know that
• 7:56
Speaker 4: you and the Bears and that Bears team, there was
• 7:58
Speaker 4: a whole lot of confident when you were in college
• 8:02
Speaker 4: and you were thinking about wanting to play in the NFL.
• 8:06
Speaker 2: Tell me a little.
• 8:07
Speaker 4: Bit about did you think what did you think about
• 8:10
Speaker 4: getting to the league. Did you think you have the
• 8:13
Speaker 4: success that you had or did you think it would
• 8:15
Speaker 4: be something different or or or how did you approach
• 8:19
  Speaker 4: the NFL.
• 8:21
Speaker 2: As you as a person?
• 8:24
  Speaker 8: Uh?
• 8:25
Speaker 5: Probably just like I approached every level from growing up,
• 8:29
Speaker 5: you know, and you get you get to your playing
• 8:32
Speaker 5: little league ball, right, I think I started ten years old, right,
• 8:36
Speaker 5: saying you just want to you just want to get
• 8:38
Speaker 5: to that next level. You want to get from pee
• 8:40
Speaker 5: wee up to the juniors or whether they call them,
• 8:42
Speaker 5: I don't know how they call them in different leagues.
• 8:45
Speaker 5: But then you want to get up there and play
• 8:47
Speaker 5: with the older guys. I never wanted to play with
• 8:50
Speaker 5: the guys my age because they sucked. I mean, you know,
• 8:56
Speaker 5: you got to you got to you know, uh, you know,
• 9:00
Speaker 5: push yourself, and you're not going to push yourself against
• 9:02
Speaker 5: guys your own age. So I always thought, you know,
• 9:06
Speaker 5: getting to the next level was not excuse me, it
• 9:09
Speaker 5: was not going to be a problem. I I knew
• 9:12
Speaker 5: how to put in the work, I knew what I
• 9:13
Speaker 5: could do, So you know, I was never worried about
• 9:17
Speaker 5: getting to that next level.
• 9:19
Speaker 7: Now now, I mean, man, I was a quarterback growing up,
• 9:22
Speaker 7: play quarterback in college, and you were always somebody I
• 9:26
Speaker 7: looked at. Now, you wore the glasses, the sunglasses, super
• 9:30
Speaker 7: Bowl shuffle, all that sort of thing. I thought you
• 9:33
Speaker 7: were the coolest dude ever, you know what I mean.
• 9:37
Speaker 7: And you know you had the swag before we start
• 9:39
Speaker 7: calling this swag. So what was kind of like maybe
• 9:43
Speaker 7: some misconceptions people had about you and sort of the persona.
• 9:49
Speaker 5: Well, I've I've been getting grief for my sunglasses since
• 9:52
Speaker 5: I was six years old and I stuck a fork
• 9:54
Speaker 5: in my eye when I was a little kid. I
• 9:57
Speaker 5: was trying to untie a knot my gun holster and
• 10:01
Speaker 5: my brothers and I were playing cowboys at the Indians
• 10:03
Speaker 5: of that day because we didn't have Xbox and all
• 10:05
Speaker 5: that you know they got nowadays. Yeah, you know, me, kid,
• 10:12
Speaker 5: I got the wretch. I tried to get that nod
• 10:17
Speaker 5: out and slipped. And that proves the hands quicker than
• 10:20
Speaker 5: the eye, because too prongs went dead center of my
• 10:23
Speaker 5: eye and kind of tore tore it to the right.
• 10:27
Speaker 5: And so they were they did a hell of a
• 10:29
Speaker 5: job just to save my eye. And so now the
• 10:32
Speaker 5: pupil doesn't dilate it. They had to cut a big
• 10:34
Speaker 5: chunk of the irish out so that the pupils always
• 10:37
Speaker 5: you know, dilated. So any kind of light, sunlight, just
• 10:41
Speaker 5: you know, sitting in a room when bright light hurts.
• 10:44
Speaker 5: So I've worn them since I was six years old
• 10:46
Speaker 5: and got in grief the whole time. So I really
• 10:48
Speaker 5: don't care any you know, I didn't care that.
• 10:51
Speaker 7: Well, I know for us and for ours eighties babies,
• 10:54
Speaker 7: we just thought it was cool.
• 10:56
Speaker 6: Yeah, and I'm gonna I'm gonna play off of Hollis's question.
• 10:59
Speaker 6: So besides the sunglasses, Jim, what about your headbands? I mean,
• 11:03
Speaker 6: they weren't they weren't just like fashion. They were they
• 11:06
Speaker 6: were statements, right, So.
• 11:07
Speaker 5: And what was the most they forced me into that?
• 11:10
Speaker 6: Oh they did? That wasn't your idea.
• 11:12
Speaker 5: You know. I started wearing a headband in college and
• 11:15
Speaker 5: that's just the only reason was to keep the damn
• 11:17
Speaker 5: skin on your forehead. You take that damn helmet off
• 11:20
Speaker 5: and on so many times. Yeah yeah, they're in training camp.
• 11:23
  Speaker 6: Yeah yeah.
• 11:24
Speaker 5: And you know you see guys all the time training
• 11:26
Speaker 5: camp with tape at guys all over their foreheads because
• 11:28
Speaker 5: they had no skin left. Right the reason I started
• 11:31
Speaker 5: wearing them, and then I didn't know they started getting
• 11:35
  Speaker 5: paid to wear.
• 11:35
Speaker 6: Them, So that was kind of what happened.
• 11:40
Speaker 5: I was wearing that Adidas headband for probably two years
• 11:43
Speaker 5: before they said a word. You know, all of a sudden,
• 11:46
  Speaker 5: we're in the playoffs and it's a big stink. I
• 11:49
Speaker 5: didn't realize Adidas wasn't paying the league at the time,
• 11:51
Speaker 5: which wasn't mind, right, but I've been I've been wearing
• 11:55
Speaker 5: the same shoes, the same headband for the you know,
• 11:57
Speaker 5: since I got in the league, so you know, but
• 12:00
Speaker 5: now it's a big deal. So they find me in
• 12:03
Speaker 5: a playoff game and then the following week I put
• 12:07
Speaker 5: Rosella on my head and I didn't get a fine.
• 12:10
Speaker 5: That week, I got a call from the commissioner thanking
• 12:14
Speaker 5: me for the free advertising, and then tell me how
• 12:17
Speaker 5: I wasn't going to be able to wear it at
• 12:18
Speaker 5: the super Bowl, and I thought, I will see And
• 12:22
Speaker 5: somehow I get from the NFC Championship game of the
• 12:26
Speaker 5: Super Bowl, you got two weeks and somehow a rule
• 12:30
Speaker 5: book ended up in my locker. I don't know who
• 12:32
Speaker 5: put it there. So I started going through it, and
• 12:35
Speaker 5: I realized they had no reason to find me, you know,
• 12:38
Speaker 5: a couple of weeks ago. So I was and I
• 12:42
Speaker 5: got offered some good money from Adidas to wear it
• 12:44
Speaker 5: in the super Bowl. And I told them, look, I said,
• 12:47
Speaker 5: I'm going to wear it, but probably not on my head,
• 12:49
Speaker 5: but you'll be able to see it as clear as day.
• 12:51
Speaker 5: And they said, well, as long as we can see it,
• 12:53
Speaker 5: we'll pay it. So I said cool. And so now
• 12:56
Speaker 5: I'm getting through this rule book and I'm going I
• 12:58
Speaker 5: got this guy now. And so I got I got
• 13:04
Speaker 5: sent thousands of thousands of head bands and people all
• 13:06
Speaker 5: over the country, you know, just their names on them,
• 13:09
Speaker 5: like Fred and Joe, you know, just and I decided
• 13:12
Speaker 5: I'm gonna wear all charities because if they find me
• 13:14
Speaker 5: for wearing a charity, they're really gonna look like assholes. So, uh, all,
• 13:20
  Speaker 5: you know, I had a whole but I don't know
• 13:21
Speaker 5: how many I wore during the game, but every every
• 13:23
Speaker 5: series was a new charity.
• 13:25
  Speaker 6: Wow.
• 13:26
Speaker 5: But during the pre during the pregame, I had the
• 13:28
Speaker 5: head ref chasing me around because I had the Adidas
• 13:30
Speaker 5: went on and uh, he goes, I can't let you
• 13:33
Speaker 5: on the field with that. I said, yeah, yeah, yeah.
• 13:35
Speaker 5: Finally gets found of the you know, the national anthem.
• 13:39
Speaker 5: You know, I'm standing there with Walter Payton, myself, the
• 13:41
Speaker 5: head ref, And as soon as the anthem's over, I
• 13:44
Speaker 5: go to put my helmet on. He goes, I can't
• 13:46
Speaker 5: letch on the field, and I go, I know, but
• 13:49
Speaker 5: you can't do a damn thing about this, And I
• 13:51
Speaker 5: pulled it down around my neck and he just started laughing.
• 13:55
Speaker 5: And you could see this thing. Every picture in the
• 13:57
Speaker 5: Super Bowl you can see Adidas clear clear's day. And
• 14:00
Speaker 5: he just starts laughing. He goes, you're right. I go,
• 14:02
Speaker 5: I know, I'm right. I read the damn rule book.
• 14:06
Speaker 5: Oh my equipment guy, give me the first headband. I
• 14:09
Speaker 5: think it was JDF for juvenile diabetes. My attorney, Simmer
• 14:14
Speaker 5: was a diabetic at the time. So I wore that,
• 14:15
Speaker 5: and then every series after that it changed. You know,
• 14:18
  Speaker 5: I had hell had POW's. I had Children's Miracle Network,
• 14:23
Speaker 5: I mean, you name it. I had it on there
• 14:25
Speaker 5: and I got a lot of great, great press from
• 14:28
Speaker 5: the people that I worked for. And I didn't get
• 14:30
Speaker 5: buyed and I got paid for Adidas And I told
• 14:33
Speaker 5: PC you made a big stink about nothing. This has
• 14:36
Speaker 5: nothing to do with the game. But you guys are
• 14:38
Speaker 5: trying to mess with me in the backfire.
• 14:41
Speaker 4: Wow, Jim, I was looking up some of the things
• 14:45
Speaker 4: about you. One of the things that I noticed was
• 14:48
Speaker 4: that you know, and you're you're talking about it a
• 14:50
Speaker 4: little bit now, you are really involved in a lot
• 14:54
Speaker 4: of different callses that you that you feel that it
• 14:59
Speaker 4: is that is worth your putting your name on it
• 15:03
Speaker 4: being part of it. Can you talk a little bit
• 15:05
Speaker 4: about some of those I know you you mentioned you
• 15:08
Speaker 4: mentioned some of them when we're talking with Lisa, But
• 15:11
Speaker 4: could you kind of give us an idea of like, like,
• 15:14
Speaker 4: what are some of the organizations that you are part
• 15:16
Speaker 4: of that you try to put your name with and
• 15:19
Speaker 4: and and help sure.
• 15:21
Speaker 5: Sure, I do a lot of a lot of stuff
• 15:22
Speaker 5: of a military, all different branches. Uh, there's the Marines,
• 15:28
Speaker 5: hope for the warriors, There's a Navy, seal uncommon grit
• 15:35
Speaker 5: Saint Jude's Shriners, as I mean, uh, but the majority
• 15:41
Speaker 5: of it is is with the military guys. I got
• 15:44
Speaker 5: a you know, I've always had a great love for
• 15:45
Speaker 5: those guys, and I've done so many great stuff with them.
• 15:48
Speaker 5: I was actually in Iraq when they hung Sadam Hussein. Uh.
• 15:52
Speaker 5: They wouldn't let us go to the hanging. That kind
• 15:54
Speaker 5: of tosaw, but we were closed. But I've got to
• 15:58
Speaker 5: you know, I flew in that six and a B
• 16:01
Speaker 5: one bomber. I've been in you know, trainers and tankers,
• 16:04
Speaker 5: and I've done so much cool stuff with them, and
• 16:08
Speaker 5: driven most of our tanks, shot most of our weapons.
• 16:11
Speaker 5: It's just been a blast. And they said, what do
• 16:13
Speaker 5: you want to do that you haven't done yet? And
• 16:16
Speaker 5: I said, get shot off an aircraft carrier and land
• 16:18
Speaker 5: on one. I was playing with the chargers then. This
• 16:23
Speaker 5: is back in like eighty nine, and I used to
• 16:27
Speaker 5: go over to Miramar every Monday night that we weren't
• 16:29
Speaker 5: playing and watch the game with the pilots and fly
• 16:31
Speaker 5: the simulators and everything. So they had it set up.
• 16:35
Speaker 5: If I would have went back to San Diego in
• 16:39
Speaker 5: nineteen ninety, but I ended up going to Philadelphia with
• 16:41
Speaker 5: Buddy Ryan and never got the chance. So but they
• 16:45
Speaker 5: said anytime you want to do it, So it's I
• 16:48
Speaker 5: still might do that.
• 16:49
Speaker 7: N Now, speaking of that, after you got done playing
• 16:53
Speaker 7: with Chicago, you had a couple of injuries and everything
• 16:55
Speaker 7: like that, you end up, like you said, with the
• 16:58
Speaker 7: Chargers and then and you Randall Cunningham goes out and
• 17:03
Speaker 7: you end up having a great season or two with them,
• 17:07
Speaker 7: getting comeback Player of the Year. So how was that
• 17:10
Speaker 7: experience after you know, going through the Super Bowl kind
• 17:13
Speaker 7: of having a rough time with injuries during your playing
• 17:15
Speaker 7: career and didn't be able to have that success at
• 17:18
  Speaker 7: that level.
• 17:18
Speaker 5: Again, Oh, it was great. That's the reason I went
• 17:21
Speaker 5: to Philadelphia because I knew I knew Buddi's defense was.
• 17:25
Speaker 5: In fact, it's the best defense I've seen other than
• 17:28
Speaker 5: the Bear one, and I think that it might even
• 17:31
Speaker 5: been a little bit better in some areas. So but
• 17:34
Speaker 5: it was I thought they had a better chance of
• 17:36
Speaker 5: getting back to the Super Bowl than the Chargers did
• 17:39
Speaker 5: at that time. So that's why I ended up in Philly,
• 17:41
Speaker 5: and then from Philly, I ended up in Minnesota with
• 17:45
Speaker 5: you kid the playoffs, yees yeah, I do.
• 17:52
Speaker 4: I do remember that and we and of course unfortunately
• 17:55
Speaker 4: we didn't. We didn't do all that we needed to do,
• 17:58
Speaker 4: that's for sure. Yeah, when you now, so looking back
• 18:04
Speaker 4: your experience like and a lot of times players are
• 18:07
Speaker 4: not really they don't necessarily Like for me, I wasn't
• 18:10
Speaker 4: comfortable going to the Saints after my seasons with the Vikings.
• 18:15
Speaker 4: But you seem to have fit in like everywhere that
• 18:19
Speaker 4: you have gone and so so it never bothered you
• 18:25
Speaker 4: going from another team to another. You just kind of
• 18:28
  Speaker 4: fit in.
• 18:28
Speaker 2: Is that is that? Would that be the right judgment
• 18:31
Speaker 2: on that looking from the outside.
• 18:34
Speaker 5: Well, I never had a problem with people.
• 18:36
Speaker 2: Well no, to me, I just thought it might have been.
• 18:38
Speaker 5: The team from the first day maybe to the last.
• 18:42
Speaker 5: So I'm not going to change. And uh, I think
• 18:45
Speaker 5: people finally started realizing that even when I was in
• 18:50
Speaker 5: you know, in Philly, after about a week, I remember
• 18:54
Speaker 5: Keith Virus come up to me and apologize to me.
• 18:56
Speaker 5: He goes, he goes, hey, man, I'm really sorry, and
• 18:58
Speaker 5: I'm like, you know what happened? What I do? No, no, no,
• 19:01
Speaker 5: I prejudged you before you got here. You know, I
• 19:05
Speaker 5: had all these misconceptions about you. You know, you weren't
• 19:09
Speaker 5: a serious ballplayer all this stuff, you know, And I'm like,
• 19:13
Speaker 5: where did that come from? He goes, well, you know
• 19:14
Speaker 5: the paper is the news. They said, Well, Ship, that's
• 19:16
Speaker 5: what that's your problem? Can be relying on that?
• 19:22
  Speaker 6: Oh for sure?
• 19:23
Speaker 5: It comes down can you play or do you know
• 19:25
Speaker 5: what the hell you're talking about? And I always, uh,
• 19:28
Speaker 5: I always felt that, you know, knowledge is confidence, So
• 19:30
Speaker 5: I knew what I was doing, so I could say
• 19:33
Speaker 5: what I wanted to say because I knew I knew
• 19:35
Speaker 5: what I was going to do. And if my boys
• 19:37
Speaker 5: up front block, We're going to win. Wasn't that Wasn't
• 19:41
  Speaker 5: that hard?
• 19:42
  Speaker 2: Oh?
• 19:43
Speaker 6: Okay, so that's awesome, Jim. I have a question. You
• 19:46
Speaker 6: alluded to this just a few minutes ago about head
• 19:49
Speaker 6: coach Mike did and the defensive coordinator Buddy Ryan kind
• 19:53
Speaker 6: of having tension between them, and you mentioned that kind
• 19:57
Speaker 6: of it kind of overflowed into your practice, says, what
• 20:01
Speaker 6: was the craziest player moment from those those battles that
• 20:05
Speaker 6: you know, during during your practices for games that kind
• 20:08
Speaker 6: of solidified your respect for all your teammates like Refrigerator
• 20:12
Speaker 6: and Walter Payton. Were there any crazy plays.
• 20:17
Speaker 5: Oh, there was literally fights on every play. Our practice
• 20:20
Speaker 5: lasted three three plus hours because they were they're fight
• 20:23
Speaker 5: every play. The best one who probably was Steve McMichael,
• 20:29
Speaker 5: who you know or a p We just lost him
• 20:32
Speaker 5: a few months ago in als, but he was a big,
• 20:36
Speaker 5: strong man and played defensive tackle for US. And Jimbo
• 20:41
Speaker 5: Cobt was my left tackle, and they got into it
• 20:44
Speaker 5: and some punches were thrown all of a sudden, Jimbo
• 20:48
Speaker 5: like I think he punched. He punched him and then
• 20:52
Speaker 5: grabbed his space mask with the same hand and he
• 20:54
Speaker 5: anke his space mask off and then punched him with
• 20:56
Speaker 5: the other hand too, And that just kind of stopped everybody.
• 21:00
Speaker 5: They went, Holy WHOA what they're like because our offense,
• 21:05
Speaker 5: you know, they talk about how tough our defense was,
• 21:07
Speaker 5: but our offensive line didn't take didn't take craft from nobody.
• 21:11
Speaker 4: Well, and I was going to say, I was going
• 21:13
Speaker 4: to say, jim like being a defensive guy. The offense
• 21:18
Speaker 4: was not like a normal, like cute, finesse type of offense.
• 21:25
Speaker 4: It was I mean, you guys on that side of
• 21:28
Speaker 4: the ball was it was physical.
• 21:30
Speaker 2: I mean it was a physical run game.
• 21:34
Speaker 5: You had to be, yeah, had to be just to
• 21:36
Speaker 5: just to play, just to practice, kid, That's why he
• 21:38
Speaker 5: got us ready for the games. It was just you know.
• 21:41
Speaker 5: And then I think the the best move they ever
• 21:43
Speaker 5: made that they drafted our left guard Mark Bortz. He
• 21:47
Speaker 5: was a defensive lineman out of Iowa and they drafted
• 21:49
Speaker 5: him as a defensive lineman, but they moved him to offense.
• 21:53
Speaker 5: And I think he brought that mentality with them to
• 21:55
Speaker 5: the to the other guys. And then along with Kurt Becker,
• 21:58
Speaker 5: Keith Van Horne, Covert, I mean, they were all here,
• 22:03
Speaker 5: mean you gotta have that. That's because that's who you'
• 22:07
Speaker 5: that's who you're blocking. There's over there in line.
• 22:11
  Speaker 4: Man, I wouldn't even I wouldn't even sit down when
• 22:18
Speaker 4: like if if you're when the defense came up, like
• 22:20
Speaker 4: I'm I'm watching you lost defense because man, I'm like
• 22:23
Speaker 4: looking at that and I'm like, man, those guys are
• 22:27
  Speaker 4: like they're they're crazy.
• 22:31
Speaker 5: So how was it like to inflict pain? That's for sure,
• 22:36
  Speaker 5: that's a fact.
• 22:37
Speaker 7: Could could you give us some stories about you know,
• 22:40
Speaker 7: Walter Payton, he was probably one of the greatest running
• 22:43
Speaker 7: backs ever and fond memories of him and playing with
• 22:47
  Speaker 7: him in Chicago.
• 22:48
Speaker 4: Jim don't tell. Don't tell no story of him running
• 22:50
Speaker 4: over me, because that's out. Did you somebody else?
• 22:56
Speaker 5: He was. He was a treat to play with. Man.
• 22:58
Speaker 5: He was never one of those guys that say, hey,
• 23:00
Speaker 5: don't give me the ball. You know I need the ball.
• 23:03
Speaker 5: Never never really said a word other than my first start.
• 23:07
Speaker 5: I think it was against Detroit my rookie year. I
• 23:11
Speaker 5: think it was right after the strike and uh, you
• 23:15
Speaker 5: know we were we were notorious third and long. We
• 23:17
Speaker 5: We're going to run sweep with Walter Right. Everybody in
• 23:19
Speaker 5: the league knew it. I could hear the guys in
• 23:21
Speaker 5: the huddle and he said, hey, watch the sweep. Right.
• 23:24
Speaker 5: I get up to the line of scrimmage and there's
• 23:27
Speaker 5: literally nine guys on my right side waiting for the sweep.
• 23:31
Speaker 5: I got a defensive tackle and a weak side linebacker
• 23:34
Speaker 5: to my left I got. I got three on two
• 23:36
Speaker 5: right there. Easy. So I'm trying to think of this.
• 23:38
Speaker 5: It was just a simple of tackle play to the fullback,
• 23:42
Speaker 5: which we've run a thousand times in training camp. Right,
• 23:45
Speaker 5: everybody knows the play, but our numbering system was back asked,
• 23:50
Speaker 5: was from what I learned from Little League until I
• 23:52
Speaker 5: got to Chicago. You know, even numbers. We were to
• 23:55
Speaker 5: the right, Odd was to the left. Chicago was reversed.
• 23:58
Speaker 5: The Pallas, whose head coach was Landry was defensive guy,
• 24:03
Speaker 5: and that's how he numbered it, and so it finally
• 24:06
Speaker 5: clicked in. And then the number happened to be thirty four.
• 24:09
Speaker 5: So I said two thirty four in my left card.
• 24:13
Speaker 5: He looks up at him and he goes, thirty four.
• 24:15
Speaker 4: What the hell thirty four?
• 24:18
Speaker 5: He wasn't in the game plan that week, right, But
• 24:21
Speaker 5: it's a play everybody knows. I said, Boots, you were
• 24:23
Speaker 5: running right there block his ass. So I give it.
• 24:25
Speaker 5: I think it was like third and six or something,
• 24:28
Speaker 5: and I give it to two. He gets like eight
• 24:30
Speaker 5: yards for first down. So I'm coming back to the
• 24:33
Speaker 5: huddle and Noah grabs me. He says, youngster, you got
• 24:35
Speaker 5: any more surprises for me? And I said, well, I said,
• 24:40
Speaker 5: I'm not running into a brick wall, dude, keep your
• 24:42
Speaker 5: ears open. And as I'm getting into the huddle, Walter
• 24:46
Speaker 5: says it to me. It's the only time we talked
• 24:48
Speaker 5: to me on the field. He said, hey, keep doing
• 24:50
Speaker 5: what you're doing. He goes, I don't want to run
• 24:52
Speaker 5: into that either. I don't think they ever changed the
• 24:56
Speaker 5: play for the poor guy. Before I got there, I go,
• 24:58
Speaker 5: it's ridiculous and try to run into that.
• 25:01
Speaker 6: Oh that's great, but yeah, that's that.
• 25:04
Speaker 5: I mean, he was just and he's made some of
• 25:06
Speaker 5: the best thirty yard runs and only gained the yard. Yes,
• 25:10
Speaker 5: for sure, sideline to sideline. He just did not like
• 25:13
  Speaker 5: to be tackled.
• 25:14
Speaker 4: And and you know, and one of the other things
• 25:17
Speaker 4: I can remember outside after after one of the games,
• 25:20
Speaker 4: I my son got a chance to meet him, and
• 25:25
Speaker 4: he was so genuine of a person that I you know,
• 25:30
Speaker 4: I think when when people think of a great athlete
• 25:33
Speaker 4: or a good football player, hard nos football player, he
• 25:37
Speaker 4: was all of those things. But he was a legitimately
• 25:41
  Speaker 4: great man.
• 25:43
Speaker 5: Yeah, nice real nice guy. Yeah, boy.
• 25:47
  Speaker 6: Like that.
• 25:48
Speaker 4: Yeah, And I just think I just thought that was
• 25:53
  Speaker 4: really special.
• 25:56
Speaker 6: He was a tough guy. Yeah. Hey, So, since we're
• 25:59
Speaker 6: going down memory lane with Walter Peyton, I'm going to
• 26:01
Speaker 6: go a little bit further back to b YU again, Jim,
• 26:03
Speaker 6: if you don't mind, and ask you about Andy Reid.
• 26:06
Speaker 6: Was he one of your college teammates at b YU?
• 26:09
Speaker 5: Yes, he was. Okay, my tackles and tackles in nineteen eighty. Yeah,
• 26:13
Speaker 5: think he came there. I believe he came there in
• 26:16
Speaker 5: seventy nine, which was my red shirt year. I played
• 26:19
Speaker 5: with him in nineteen eighty Yep, sure did.
• 26:21
Speaker 6: What was he like, did you guys have a close
• 26:23
  Speaker 6: friendship or yeah?
• 26:26
Speaker 5: Yeah, we got real close. One time he got me drilled.
• 26:29
Speaker 5: He kind of missed this guy in this conference and
• 26:32
Speaker 5: I looked up and his was the first face I saw.
• 26:35
Speaker 5: That was your guy. Yep, sorry about that. So other
• 26:38
Speaker 5: than that, yeah, he did well. He was a scrapper.
• 26:42
  Speaker 5: I loved what he's done as a coach. I mean,
• 26:43
Speaker 5: he's got to love the next offensive lineman. Likes to
• 26:46
  Speaker 5: throw the ball.
• 26:47
Speaker 6: Absolutely, he loves that.
• 26:51
Speaker 4: Jim when you when you when you watch the games,
• 26:54
Speaker 4: now go to the games. Now do you see do
• 26:58
Speaker 4: you see a difference a major difference in the game?
• 27:02
Speaker 4: And if so, like what what do you see and do?
• 27:05
Speaker 4: And then maybe even to the point of do you
• 27:08
Speaker 4: like what you see of where the game's going now?
• 27:12
Speaker 5: Well, the other day is when I saw more football
• 27:16
Speaker 5: on Saturday whenever the Bears played the Packers. I saw
• 27:21
Speaker 5: that tast half and then about the last five minutes
• 27:24
Speaker 5: of the game and that's all I saw all season,
• 27:26
Speaker 5: so other than knowing that they throw the ball a
• 27:29
Speaker 5: lot more than they did back when we played, which
• 27:32
Speaker 5: I would have liked to do because that's what I
• 27:33
Speaker 5: did coming out of college, was throw the ball. But
• 27:36
Speaker 5: you know, I got stuck in that offense.
• 27:40
Speaker 4: Well, yeah, because when we were when we were first
• 27:42
Speaker 4: into the league, I mean, there wasn't like you you
• 27:45
Speaker 4: might throw twelve to fifteen times in a game, and everything.
• 27:50
  Speaker 2: Else was running.
• 27:51
Speaker 4: I don't know if people really realized that the defenses
• 27:55
Speaker 4: were set really basically for the run and accept whatever
• 28:00
Speaker 4: took place in the past because you didn't really throw
• 28:03
Speaker 4: the ball. And then until teams started kind of doing
• 28:06
Speaker 4: like some of that hurry up stuff and all that,
• 28:09
Speaker 4: that was really like those kind of teams were the
• 28:11
Speaker 4: only ones who were really throwing the ball. Everybody else
• 28:14
Speaker 4: had a big running back and and just it was
• 28:17
Speaker 4: just pounding it every almost every other every other.
• 28:20
Speaker 5: Play, right right. It was very boring.
• 28:27
Speaker 2: Imagine for me, it wasn't very good. I because I mean.
• 28:31
Speaker 4: I'm out there trying to and I'm and I've said
• 28:35
Speaker 4: this to the crew exactly, and I've told the crew
• 28:41
Speaker 4: man my experience with Peyton was not a good one. Man,
• 28:47
Speaker 4: it was not a good one. And and it was
• 28:50
Speaker 4: in I was playing safety. It was the year that
• 28:52
Speaker 4: I played safety in my I think my second year,
• 28:55
Speaker 4: and and man like it just like the the front
• 28:59
Speaker 4: just open and I'm playing at free safety and I'm
• 29:02
Speaker 4: like thinking, and I wanted to get back to free safety.
• 29:04
  Speaker 4: I thought I was like a tackler. I was a
• 29:07
Speaker 4: you know, I was that dude, right, I can hit you. Yeah,
• 29:10
Speaker 4: and Jim, man, it just popped open and I'm looking
• 29:14
Speaker 4: at him and I'm already My first thought was like,
• 29:17
Speaker 4: he's not gonna he's not gonna get off track. He's
• 29:20
Speaker 4: not gonna make a move on me. There's no real
• 29:22
Speaker 4: reason for him to even think about making a move
• 29:27
Speaker 4: for me. So I know he's gonna run me over.
• 29:28
Speaker 4: So man, I'm running. I'm giving everything I got. Man,
• 29:33
Speaker 4: I hit him, my whole body just like stopped. I
• 29:39
Speaker 4: started and I started going on my way back. The
• 29:44
Speaker 4: only reason he failed was because he tripped over me.
• 29:47
  Speaker 2: Like I didn't.
• 29:48
Speaker 4: I love to claim like I hit him and I
• 29:50
Speaker 4: tackled him, but no, man, he tripped over me. And
• 29:54
Speaker 4: to me, when people ask me who was the best
• 29:56
Speaker 4: running back, I've ever played against it's him.
• 30:00
Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, he would. He definitely lay a pop on
• 30:03
Speaker 5: you if he could. He use that elbow too.
• 30:05
Speaker 2: Oh yeah, that was yeah, that was a punch really yeah,
• 30:10
Speaker 2: that was more. Yeah, that was more of a punch.
• 30:12
Speaker 5: He was strong, Oh my gosh.
• 30:14
  Speaker 2: Yes.
• 30:15
Speaker 4: And and that's even really before weights were a big
• 30:19
Speaker 4: deal in the you know, like working out every all
• 30:24
Speaker 4: three days or three days of the week and all
• 30:26
Speaker 4: that kind of stuff. That was really before everybody was
• 30:29
Speaker 4: really dying into into the weights getting stronger. That was
• 30:34
Speaker 4: just to me that I felt like that was mostly
• 30:36
  Speaker 4: natural for him.
• 30:39
Speaker 5: No, he worked, he worked out. He ran up and
• 30:41
Speaker 5: down this big ass hill behind his house. He ran
• 30:45
Speaker 5: up and down there. He tried to get me out there, said, dude,
• 30:47
Speaker 5: if I got to run up that al gonna win.
• 30:52
Speaker 5: Those big boys get paid.
• 30:56
Speaker 2: Hey, Joe, we're gonna take a quick break and we'll
• 30:59
Speaker 2: be right back. Okay.
• 31:00
Speaker 8: Bad things happen to good people seriously injured in a
• 31:03
Speaker 8: car accident, trucking accident, or even wrongfully arrested. Life happens,
• 31:07
Speaker 8: and when it happens to you, you will need sound
• 31:09
Speaker 8: legal advice and aggressive representation. That's when you call Attorney
• 31:12
Speaker 8: Frank Walker at three zero four four one three zero
• 31:15
Speaker 8: one seven nine. That's three zero four four one three
• 31:19

• 31:56
Speaker 4: All right, we just we can come on back. We
• 31:58
Speaker 4: just know they'll put in the break. We just so
• 32:02
Speaker 4: we'll go back. Hollis. Hollis had to leave, so it's
• 32:05
Speaker 4: just me and start with the clip. Oh yeah, we're
• 32:08
Speaker 4: gonna play a clip. So let me let me, let
• 32:12
Speaker 4: me get us going, and then we're gonna run a clip.
• 32:14
Speaker 4: And then we'll have you comment on it.
• 32:16
Speaker 2: Okay, all right, all.
• 32:19
Speaker 4: Right, ladies and gentlemen, we're back from a break and
• 32:21
Speaker 4: we're gonna we're gonna play a clip for you and
• 32:24
Speaker 4: uh and we've got Jim Jim McMahon on the line,
• 32:27
Speaker 4: so we'll see what his response is after we hear it.
• 32:49
Speaker 5: Well, they called me sweetness, and I like to dance
• 32:52
Speaker 5: running the balls like mans.
• 32:54
Speaker 4: We had to go to his train in camp to
• 32:56
  Speaker 4: give Chicagold champion.
• 32:58
Speaker 2: And we're not doing this ts with Greening. The Bears
• 33:01
Speaker 2: are doing it. Defeat the need it. We didn't come
• 33:04
Speaker 2: here look for truck, were just people.
• 33:07
Speaker 5: I'm the preky cubbing on as mcmahn. When I hit
• 33:10
Speaker 5: the turch, I've got no plan.
• 33:12
Speaker 2: I just rolled my body all the way I can.
• 33:15
Speaker 5: Then that's when I control the field.
• 33:17
Speaker 8: I motivate the cats that I like to GEVs.
• 33:19
Speaker 4: I play so cool like a the please.
• 33:21
Speaker 5: That's why you all got here on the double to
• 33:24
Speaker 5: catch me doing the Summer Bowl shovel.
• 33:28
  Speaker 9: Jim.
• 33:28
Speaker 6: I do not understand how your musical career didn't take
• 33:31
  Speaker 6: off after that.
• 33:32
Speaker 2: I mean, what happened?
• 33:34
Speaker 5: I don't know. We had a gold record, the playing video,
• 33:37
Speaker 5: and we lost the Grammy to print that year. I
• 33:42
Speaker 5: guess that's not too bad, nose, you might as well
• 33:46
  Speaker 5: lose the print.
• 33:47
Speaker 2: I'll give you that.
• 33:48
Speaker 6: So let me ask you this though, Jim, those were
• 33:50
Speaker 6: the kind of things that your teams remembered for. I mean,
• 33:52
Speaker 6: not only winning the Super Bowl the eighty five Bears,
• 33:55
Speaker 6: but just the kind of bravado that came with you guys.
• 33:57
Speaker 6: I mean, was that something that you guys just naturally
• 34:00
Speaker 6: fell into or was it something that you deliberately did
• 34:03
Speaker 6: to get in your opponent's heads. Was it a combination?
• 34:06
Speaker 6: I mean, was that just was it just fun?
• 34:09
Speaker 5: We had a lot of very competent players. We had
• 34:12
Speaker 5: a lot of competent people, and we knew we were good.
• 34:16
Speaker 5: I mean, we had a good five year run. It
• 34:18
Speaker 5: wasn't like we just away in eighty five, right, right,
• 34:21
Speaker 5: that's true. But you know, we just thought when they
• 34:24
Speaker 5: came that idea came to us, you know where we
• 34:27
Speaker 5: go had a friend in the music business and he said, look,
• 34:29
Speaker 5: we're going to do this record. They said, record and
• 34:33
Speaker 5: the proceeds will feed the homeless on Thanksgiving and Christmas.
• 34:37
Speaker 5: That's where we're thinking that We thought maybe just be
• 34:39
Speaker 5: like a little local thing. You know, nobody thought it
• 34:42
Speaker 5: would turn into what it did. But uh yeah, that's
• 34:46
Speaker 5: the reason that we did it. And you know, after
• 34:49
Speaker 5: we did the record, the guys that had speaking parts,
• 34:51
Speaker 5: they came to us two weeks after that and said, hey,
• 34:53
Speaker 5: now we got to do a video. We're like, what
• 35:00
Speaker 5: the deal was a record? Oh no, nowadays when you
• 35:02
Speaker 5: do a record, you get into a video. Well, that
• 35:04
Speaker 5: ain't part of the deal. I ain't going myself and
• 35:09
Speaker 5: Walter actually didn't go. And they actually filmed that at
• 35:13
Speaker 5: the day after we lost to Miami on Monday night
• 35:16
Speaker 5: down to Miami, So we got home like at three
• 35:18
Speaker 5: or four. They guys had to be at the studio
• 35:20
Speaker 5: I think at nine and they were there for eight
• 35:23
Speaker 5: ten hours I think. And yeah, so then Walter and
• 35:28
Speaker 5: I had to eventually do our parts of the racquetball
• 35:31
Speaker 5: court at Hallis Hall after practice one day, so you
• 35:34
Speaker 5: see up there's a couple of guys doing But it
• 35:40
Speaker 5: turned out, you know, we still had four games, four
• 35:42
Speaker 5: or five games left to play in the season, so
• 35:44
Speaker 5: if we don't win, we're going to look like idiots.
• 35:47
Speaker 6: Oh wow, So that was pre recorded. It wasn't like
• 35:49
Speaker 6: right before the Super Bowl.
• 35:51
Speaker 5: Oh no, oh okay, And as people were putting it
• 35:55
Speaker 5: up on their locker rooms going look at they're.
• 35:57
Speaker 4: Going to say, yeah, absolutely, because I can tell you
• 36:02
Speaker 4: the first time I heard it and saw it, oh,
• 36:05
Speaker 4: I hated it, Like I was like, what's going on
• 36:10
  Speaker 4: with them?
• 36:10
Speaker 2: What makes them think they're so special? I'm like, why
• 36:14
  Speaker 2: is that happen?
• 36:15
Speaker 6: And tell us how you really feel, Carl, Well, no,
• 36:18
Speaker 6: it was like once you.
• 36:20
Speaker 4: You from the beginning, you already don't like the Bears,
• 36:24
Speaker 4: you know, because they're they're the team that you got
• 36:26
  Speaker 4: to beat.
• 36:27
Speaker 2: And now that they're good, and you know that they're good,
• 36:31
Speaker 2: you don't really want to give it me any good.
• 36:34
Speaker 2: And now they're dancing.
• 36:36
Speaker 4: Now they're dancing there all of that, they're all over
• 36:38
Speaker 4: the television dancing and singing.
• 36:41
Speaker 2: What else could you think? Like what else? Like what
• 36:44
Speaker 2: else can they do? Like what else can they do
• 36:46
Speaker 2: to make a team not like them?
• 36:53
Speaker 4: Because I have to assume everybody who saw it, and
• 36:57
Speaker 4: everybody that you all played, whoever those last games were,
• 37:02
Speaker 4: it was all about like, oh, let's show them, you know,
• 37:05
Speaker 4: and yeah, yeah, and any and and again anybody could
• 37:11
Speaker 4: use anything that you needed anything to motivate you to
• 37:15
Speaker 4: go for the Bears because they were just that good
• 37:18
Speaker 4: and you needed something to motivate your team to be like,
• 37:21
Speaker 4: oh we got to get them because they said this,
• 37:23
Speaker 4: or they're out there dancing and having fun and all
• 37:26
Speaker 4: that kind of stuff.
• 37:27
Speaker 2: It didn't change anything though.
• 37:30
Speaker 4: Unfortunately it didn't change I mean it was to me,
• 37:33
Speaker 4: it was really one of those kind of situations where
• 37:36
Speaker 4: it was the perfect team doing all of the perfect things,
• 37:42
Speaker 4: not even knowing what the what the cause was, you know,
• 37:45
Speaker 4: I didn't know that it was all four different charities
• 37:48
Speaker 4: and things, but it but at the end of the day,
• 37:53
Speaker 4: everything that they did, they could back it up. Anything
• 37:56
Speaker 4: they said, they could back it up. And when when
• 38:00
Speaker 4: you can't change it, it is what it is.
• 38:03
Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean that.
• 38:05
  Speaker 4: I mean again, to me, I don't think there's a
• 38:08
Speaker 4: team today that would even be willing to get on
• 38:14
Speaker 4: the field and play that team in its prime.
• 38:18
  Speaker 2: M I just don't. I don't think it's possible.
• 38:21
Speaker 5: Yeah. So, like I said, I'd line up with those
• 38:25
  Speaker 5: guys against anybody.
• 38:27
Speaker 6: Yes, I don't blame you man, So so Jim, we
• 38:30
Speaker 6: had some audience interaction, We had some questions that we
• 38:34
Speaker 6: received before the interview with you today tonight, and one
• 38:38
Speaker 6: was and you referred to playing with the Packers at
• 38:41
Speaker 6: one point in your career, and did you play with
• 38:44
Speaker 6: Brett Favre at any time when you were there? Yes, yeah, okay, well.
• 38:51
Speaker 5: Year and a half, a year and four or five
• 38:52
  Speaker 5: games yet Okay.
• 38:53
Speaker 6: So someone was wanting to know what it was like
• 38:55
  Speaker 6: playing with him.
• 38:58
  Speaker 5: Was from he's a competitive he's Luke prankster. You'd like
• 39:02
Speaker 5: to have a good time, you'd like to laugh, and
• 39:04
Speaker 5: you did a great job for us. I told him,
• 39:07
Speaker 5: just don't screw it up, because it was all set
• 39:09
Speaker 5: up for us perfectly. It was just like what happened
• 39:12
Speaker 5: in Chicago. We lost the championship game in eighty four,
• 39:16
Speaker 5: came back in eighty five and won it, and then
• 39:18
Speaker 5: and then ninety five. That's what happened to us. We
• 39:20
Speaker 5: lost the NMC championship. And so while we were in
• 39:23
Speaker 5: training camp, the schedule came out and I noticed that
• 39:27
Speaker 5: the Super Bowl was back in New Orleans and it
• 39:29
Speaker 5: was actually on the same day that we had played
• 39:31
  Speaker 5: eleven years prior.
• 39:33
  Speaker 2: Wow.
• 39:34
Speaker 5: And then we ended up playing against the same team.
• 39:37
  Speaker 9: Wow.
• 39:38
Speaker 5: We talked about some days of boos, but at least
• 39:41
Speaker 5: there was nobody trying to shoot me then that time.
• 39:45
Speaker 5: I try to stay out of the news.
• 39:47
  Speaker 6: Yeah, we're sure.
• 39:50
Speaker 4: Do you do you think when you when you look
• 39:52
Speaker 4: back and you you see that team and you see
• 39:57
Speaker 4: those players, and I know, you know, maybe there may
• 40:00
Speaker 4: have been some of the players may have moved on Gulf, But.
• 40:05
  Speaker 2: Is that bond.
• 40:06
  Speaker 4: I mean, that's a bond that it's it's very difficult
• 40:09
Speaker 4: to break. I know when we went to the NFC
• 40:11
Speaker 4: Championship game and even though we lost it, like those
• 40:16
Speaker 4: guys on that team, there is such a bond that
• 40:20
Speaker 4: you you can never lose. And and and I don't
• 40:23
Speaker 4: know if that's just a football thing or just a
• 40:26
  Speaker 4: sports thing, but I don't, you know, I don't know
• 40:28
Speaker 4: if the public realizes like how strong of a bond
• 40:33
Speaker 4: you get and you build when you're spending that time
• 40:37
Speaker 4: in the locker room, on the field, you're going through
• 40:39
Speaker 4: highs and you're going through lows. You end up finding
• 40:43
Speaker 4: yourself loving every one of those dudes that you that
• 40:47
Speaker 4: you're around every day. And I can't imagine just how
• 40:51
Speaker 4: you guys played, I can only imagine the bond that
• 40:54
  Speaker 4: you must have.
• 40:56
Speaker 5: Yeah, it's still strong. And I saw the guys opening weekend.
• 41:01
Speaker 5: I think it was against the Vikings, wasn't it. Didn't
• 41:04
Speaker 5: they play Monday night in Chicago? Yes, I'm pretty sure alumni.
• 41:09
Speaker 5: We had our alumni this weekend. Okay, anniversary that night.
• 41:13
Speaker 5: So I got to see all the guys that I
• 41:14
Speaker 5: haven't seen in probably thirty years. And it's still the same,
• 41:17
Speaker 5: you know, the same old locker room. You know, jokes,
• 41:20
Speaker 5: and how's everybody feeling? You should have seen this all
• 41:23
Speaker 5: limp out though, I mean, we look, I understand that you.
• 41:29
  Speaker 6: Know who's undefeated, Jim, it's it's father Tom right, he's
• 41:33
Speaker 6: down in no doubt.
• 41:38
Speaker 4: Well, Jim, we'll we'll let you go. And man, I
• 41:41
Speaker 4: totally appreciate it. And I'm hoping that we'll get to
• 41:44
Speaker 4: see each other. I know buddy will have something going
• 41:48
Speaker 4: and we'll we'll meet back up in Minneapolis.
• 41:51
Speaker 5: All right, brother sounds great?
• 41:52
Speaker 2: All right, I appreciate it.
• 41:53
Speaker 6: Thank you Jim so much.
• 41:56
  Speaker 5: You're welcome.
• 41:56
Speaker 6: Have a good night.
• 42:03
Speaker 4: So I'm very colorful, yes, And and what's what's interesting
• 42:11
Speaker 4: to me is like he can be even more.
• 42:17
Speaker 6: Like I'll call it colorful, flamboyant.
• 42:21
Speaker 2: Yeah, and and and and I don't know if it
• 42:24
Speaker 2: was just like him just being you know, just wanting
• 42:26
Speaker 2: to be cool. Just do the interview.
• 42:28
Speaker 4: But like I said, I'll get a chance to see
• 42:31
Speaker 4: him sometime whenever we get a chance to be back
• 42:34
  Speaker 4: in Minnesota.
• 42:35
Speaker 2: But he is such like a such could do man
• 42:37
Speaker 2: like like. I can tell that and when like and
• 42:40
Speaker 2: you would think somebody as notable as him.
• 42:44
Speaker 4: Wouldn't want to sit around and sign autographs from you know,
• 42:48
Speaker 4: these everybody running around trying to get an autograph.
• 42:51
Speaker 2: He is so cool with it. Yeah, you know, he
• 42:54
Speaker 2: has no issues with it, and.
• 42:57
Speaker 6: He seems like a very caring person.
• 43:00
  Speaker 4: Like he's just a great He's just a he's he's
• 43:03
Speaker 4: not what most people would think a star would be,
• 43:08
  Speaker 4: you know.
• 43:08
Speaker 2: And I consider him a star, oh sure.
• 43:11
  Speaker 4: And and and a and a and a a an
• 43:14
Speaker 4: example of the greatest quarterbacks you know during that time.
• 43:21
Speaker 4: And yet he'll come on this show, he'll meet up
• 43:26
Speaker 4: with people and talk to people, answer questions with him.
• 43:30
Speaker 4: And to me, you think that there's a lot of
• 43:34
Speaker 4: people like that who has his background who would not
• 43:39
Speaker 4: do that. They wouldn't take the time and for whatever
• 43:42
Speaker 4: that reason, a good, bad or indifferent why they don't
• 43:44
Speaker 4: do it. It amazes me that he would do it.
• 43:49
Speaker 4: Like even when I called, like he was like, oh yeah,
• 43:52
Speaker 4: I'll do it, you know, let me know.
• 43:53
Speaker 6: You know, no hesitation wasn't you guys played what what
• 43:57
Speaker 6: years did you guys play together?
• 43:58
Speaker 2: He came in in eighty two. I came in in
• 44:01
Speaker 2: eighty three, so that.
• 44:02
Speaker 6: Was before he went to the Bears.
• 44:04
Speaker 2: And no, yeah, he he just got to the he
• 44:08
Speaker 2: when I got there, he was with the bass. Okay, okay,
• 44:10
Speaker 2: you know, and and I'm telling you man, he he
• 44:15
Speaker 2: he doesn't. He didn't say it out loud. He was
• 44:21
Speaker 2: like he was the man on that team. Yeah, you know, like.
• 44:26
Speaker 4: You had Singletary, you know, he and I and I
• 44:29
Speaker 4: and I looked at Singletary as like the guy who's
• 44:31
Speaker 4: running the defense, right, and you see mc mahon he's
• 44:35
  Speaker 4: running the offense.
• 44:36
Speaker 2: But when you start to think about, like, well, who's
• 44:37
Speaker 2: running the team? Yeah, who is the man?
• 44:40
  Speaker 5: Right?
• 44:41
Speaker 2: One of them have to be.
• 44:42
Speaker 4: Somebody has to be the man. To me, in my vision,
• 44:47
Speaker 4: it was him, yeah, and it and it wasn't a
• 44:50
  Speaker 4: power trip, right.
• 44:52
Speaker 2: It was like let's go, guys, we can do this,
• 44:55
Speaker 2: you know. It was a different kind of leadership. Yeah
• 45:00
  Speaker 2: that I think.
• 45:02
  Speaker 5: You don't.
• 45:03
  Speaker 2: You don't.
• 45:03
Speaker 4: You don't see now, like he was leading by example
• 45:09
Speaker 4: and he's he's asking you, come on, Lisa, let's go,
• 45:11
Speaker 4: come on, we can do this.
• 45:12
Speaker 2: Yeah, you know, not like come on, let's go, let's go.
• 45:15
Speaker 2: Like it wasn't really like that, it was it was.
• 45:18
Speaker 4: A different it appeared to be different than that, and
• 45:22
Speaker 4: just a cool like like I'll do anything for him.
• 45:26
Speaker 2: You know, like he could get you to the point of.
• 45:28
Speaker 6: Like he's just got that type of personality and leadership
• 45:33
Speaker 6: and leadership right right that.
• 45:35
Speaker 2: I think that is the craziest.
• 45:37
Speaker 6: And I really was interested when I asked him about
• 45:39
Speaker 6: the head band story. I didn't realize that there was
• 45:41
Speaker 6: that much into it. I didn't realize that he had
• 45:44
Speaker 6: been penalized for the first one and then after that
• 45:48
Speaker 6: he's like, well, I'll just wear charities. They can't do
• 45:49
Speaker 6: anything about that, and she was pretty cool. I didn't
• 45:52
Speaker 6: realize the whole history behind that.
• 45:53
Speaker 2: But again, even in that.
• 45:57
Speaker 4: He's standing up for right, he's standing up for having
• 46:01
Speaker 4: the opportunity to represent, to to make sure people see
• 46:07
Speaker 4: these things that matter to him because it matters to
• 46:11
  Speaker 4: other people.
• 46:12
Speaker 2: It's going to impact other people.
• 46:13
Speaker 6: And he got creative with the indeedst one sitting in
• 46:16
Speaker 6: around his neck because he knew said he read the book.
• 46:18
Speaker 6: So that was a really interesting story.
• 46:20
Speaker 2: Who who reads the Who who reads the rule books
• 46:25
Speaker 2: to see how to break it?
• 46:27
  Speaker 6: Obvious?
• 46:28
Speaker 4: And and and and again he's not breaking it for
• 46:32
Speaker 4: himself just to just to be bragging, just to say
• 46:35
Speaker 4: I want to do this. He's pooving a point and
• 46:38
Speaker 4: and and doing it for something that matters, right, And
• 46:42
  Speaker 4: to me, I don't know if you can. I don't
• 46:45
Speaker 4: know if you can take anything away from that. And
• 46:51
Speaker 4: and to me, it's it's more of it just shows
• 46:54
Speaker 4: who he really is from.
• 46:56
Speaker 6: What you step for, what he believes in period, and
• 46:59
Speaker 6: you can and and and to me, what what that?
• 47:02
Speaker 4: What that shows as we promote, as we promoted his
• 47:06
Speaker 4: name out as you know, going to be on the show,
• 47:11
Speaker 4: we're promoting him as that football player, right, but he's
• 47:16
  Speaker 4: bigger than that.
• 47:16
Speaker 6: Yes, yes, which is what this show is all about.
• 47:19
  Speaker 2: Y I enjoy that.
• 47:21
Speaker 4: Yeah, he's so much What what we got to see,
• 47:23
Speaker 4: what we got to hear and what we what I
• 47:26
Speaker 4: hope that the listeners get is he's he's he's different
• 47:31
  Speaker 4: than who.
• 47:31
Speaker 2: You thought he was.
• 47:33
Speaker 4: If you've seen him play, if you saw the clips
• 47:35
Speaker 4: of him saying this, or him in the in the
• 47:38
Speaker 4: in the shuffle and all that kind of stuff, you
• 47:40
Speaker 4: see all those things, right, But the reality of it
• 47:47
Speaker 4: was for something else, something bigger, what he thought was
• 47:50
  Speaker 4: bigger than him.
• 47:52
Speaker 6: Very very very down to earth. I like, I liked
• 47:56
Speaker 6: I liked him a lot. Yeah, that was that was
• 47:58
Speaker 6: we need to have him back on. Yeah, we may
• 48:03
Speaker 6: have to go down the road and and and try
• 48:04
Speaker 6: to find another way, because.
• 48:06
Speaker 4: I would like to have a I'd like to have
• 48:07
Speaker 4: a couple of quarterbacks, like one somewhat closer to now
• 48:13
Speaker 4: versus someone back in the day. And then the way
• 48:16
Speaker 4: Jim was like a tough guy anyway, Like he wasn't
• 48:19
Speaker 4: like the cute quarterback, you know, he was like that.
• 48:23
Speaker 2: You know, he was a dog, you know. And and
• 48:26
Speaker 2: I hate to say this, but a lot of quarterbacks
• 48:28
Speaker 2: today are not dogs.
• 48:31
  Speaker 6: That's pretty much.
• 48:34
Speaker 4: And yeah, and and yeah, and I'd like I kind
• 48:39
Speaker 4: of like to see the difference, the difference in how
• 48:42
Speaker 4: they think. Yeah, you know, you know, I mean when
• 48:47
Speaker 4: you when Jim talks, he talks about his team, Yeah,
• 48:51
Speaker 4: how they work. Some of the cute quarterbacks, talk about
• 48:55
Speaker 4: them good, you know, and you know I do this
• 48:59
Speaker 4: and you know, and I make sure I do these
• 49:00
Speaker 4: kind of things and da da da da da. But
• 49:05
  Speaker 4: that's a championship guy right there. That's a you know,
• 49:08
  Speaker 4: that's a guy.
• 49:09
  Speaker 6: That's one in a million. Yeah, to me, I don't
• 49:11
Speaker 6: think they make them like him anymore.
• 49:13
  Speaker 4: And I don't think you. I don't think there's been
• 49:15
  Speaker 4: a team. I don't think there will be a team
• 49:19
Speaker 4: that will ever be like that group of Chicago Bears team.
• 49:27
Speaker 4: I think that was probably the best once in a
• 49:30
Speaker 4: lifetime team. You know, Vikings have some great teams back
• 49:34
Speaker 4: in the day. They're once in a lifetime there. But
• 49:37
Speaker 4: I think this Bears team was amazing and couldn't just.
• 49:43
Speaker 6: The names, I mean, the names that came from that
• 49:46
Speaker 6: that that super Bowl team that they're just household names,
• 49:49
Speaker 6: I mean, you know, and it's more than one.
• 49:51
Speaker 2: So that's the crazy thing.
• 49:52
Speaker 6: Yeah, that's the crazy.
• 49:53
Speaker 4: That's when you know it's that's when you know it's good.
• 49:55
Speaker 4: Is when you know most you can almost name all
• 49:59
Speaker 4: the players on that team playing in the position and
• 50:02
Speaker 4: still can and still can years later, years later. All Right, well,
• 50:06
