- 0:35Speaker 1: E dot com. Uh, when I was is she not?
- 0:42Speaker 3: No?
- 0:42Speaker 1: Phil? You can record this. You just started now and
- 0:51Speaker 1: you just started it, and I want to first I'm
- 0:53Speaker 1: gonna say we're joined today by the host of Busting
- 0:56Speaker 1: with the Boys on the Barstool Podcast Network, Taylor Curtis Lewin.
- 1:03Speaker 4: How do you like to say, Taylor Lawan, But my
- 1:07Speaker 4: whole life it's all good.
- 1:09Speaker 3: New ground comeback. Yeah, just churching it up, dirt.
- 1:16Speaker 4: Yeah, you only got a little something.
- 1:18Speaker 1: And uh will earl Oh my god, this makes you
- 1:23Speaker 1: sound pretentious.
- 1:25Speaker 3: William earle.
- 1:27Speaker 1: Yes was like, give me some of that money. Yes,
- 1:31Speaker 1: Oh what was? I had two things because just before
- 1:34Speaker 1: the show started we were talking about rock and roll,
- 1:37Speaker 1: and we're talking about when your song if you're a
- 1:40Speaker 1: rocker like you'r Nirvana or Pearl Jam or whatever, like
- 1:42Speaker 1: so you're cool like a long time ago, and then
- 1:44Speaker 1: one day you wake up in your classic rock and
- 1:47Speaker 1: and that being disconcerting. And I was going to point
- 1:50Speaker 1: out in talking about how adaptable classic rock is. The
- 1:57Speaker 1: f M station where I grew up, ninety four point
- 1:59Speaker 1: five K would do now and then they would do
- 2:03Speaker 1: that like thousand Greatest Rock Songs, which is you know,
- 2:08Speaker 1: it's like it's like a thing that brings the country together.
- 2:11Speaker 1: But kl Q would jump in and do an editorial insert,
- 2:17Speaker 1: so you know it's gonna end like for weeks, you're
- 2:20Speaker 1: driving down the road knowing this is gonna land at
- 2:22Speaker 1: Stairway to Heaven. But they would add number two, put
- 2:26Speaker 1: in Uncle Ted's Fred Bear Fred.
- 2:30Speaker 3: Is a Jam.
- 2:31Speaker 1: They would they would stick that in just to stick
- 2:34Speaker 1: it to the man and say it's no stairway to Heaven,
- 2:38Speaker 1: but it's definitely better than hate Jude.
- 2:42Speaker 3: Right, Hey, Fred Bears a Jam? Now, yeah, that's like
- 2:46Speaker 3: the first Hunting song I grew up listening to.
- 2:48Speaker 5: Oh yeah, it's funny when VHS right, You're like, oh
- 2:51Speaker 5: that it's hunting.
- 2:53Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, I want.
- 2:55Speaker 1: To learn more about this Fred Bear guy, we're gonna
- 3:00Speaker 1: you're gonna have we gotta hang tight a minute. What
- 3:02Speaker 1: did we gotta do? Right off the top of the
- 3:03Speaker 1: bat And you guys might like this we're doing this
- 3:09Speaker 1: year we let our We used to license music for
- 3:12Speaker 1: the end of the show. You guys do that with
- 3:13Speaker 1: the show.
- 3:14Speaker 3: I don't think so now do you just ended? Yeah?
- 3:17Speaker 4: Got this little riff.
- 3:18Speaker 3: I think a guy named Drew Dixon did it for us.
- 3:21Speaker 3: One we use now is from Ernest. Yeah, Ernest.
- 3:23Speaker 4: Ernest came on the bus and he had did a
- 3:25Speaker 4: little acoustic jam and put it together.
- 3:27Speaker 3: That's the beginning.
- 3:27Speaker 4: But that little guitar riff at the end, I'm pretty
- 3:30Speaker 4: sure it was like Drew Dixon, who was like, guys
- 3:32Speaker 4: a singer songwriter in Nashville have been working in the
- 3:35Speaker 4: like a tin roof to bar on d Mumbrian Street forwever.
- 3:38Speaker 1: You didn't have to license that every year, you just
- 3:40Speaker 1: got it.
- 3:41Speaker 3: We didn't know about it at first because Quicker City
- 3:43Speaker 3: Nighthawks was the very first one.
- 3:44Speaker 1: We would use.
- 3:45Speaker 3: Yeah, and then do you hear about all the copyright
- 3:47Speaker 3: and stuff? And then we tried to mess with him,
- 3:50Speaker 3: but then they didn't want to mess with us. But
- 3:51Speaker 3: then when we kind of became popular, they wanted to
- 3:54Speaker 3: come back, and we're kind of like, oh.
- 3:55Speaker 4: Yeah, you gotta gotta get in when we get in
- 3:59Speaker 4: good Yeah.
- 4:00Speaker 1: Yeah, point being uh we are. We had licensed to
- 4:05Speaker 1: a song that no one really liked it, but it
- 4:07Speaker 1: just meant something to me. And then we let the
- 4:09Speaker 1: license expire and we told our audience that from now on,
- 4:12Speaker 1: we're only gonna outro with music that they write and
- 4:17Speaker 1: send in. So it's just gonna be never ending runs
- 4:20Speaker 1: of musicians that wrote music for us and sent it in.
- 4:25Speaker 1: So this one I like so much that I don't
- 4:28Speaker 1: want to just outro it. I want to intro the outro.
- 4:33Speaker 4: Both you do a quinin Tarantina situation.
- 4:36Speaker 3: Yeah, you're starting.
- 4:36Speaker 1: At watch watching moment. We're gonna intro the outro. Are
- 4:45Speaker 1: you ready? Phil?
- 4:46Speaker 5: Yeah, gotta pulled up.
- 4:47Speaker 1: Phil is gonna let's hear it, Philly. M guys sent this.
- 4:56Speaker 3: In, wrote it just for this.
- 5:00Speaker 5: That's like young guns.
- 5:04Speaker 6: That surprised me.
- 5:05Speaker 1: Wait for the elk bugle, though, you wait for the
- 5:07Speaker 1: elk bugle.
- 5:07Speaker 6: God may.
- 5:18Speaker 1: Guy, there it is, dude. I'm telling you what you
- 5:25Speaker 1: turned off?
- 5:25Speaker 5: Now Phil, it's a lot going on.
- 5:27Speaker 1: Hot tip brandy musicians man throwing out bugle into your metal.
- 5:32Speaker 1: It's like with cooks, throw a little butter in her.
- 5:34Speaker 1: You throw some elk bugles into your music and you're
- 5:37Speaker 1: gonna be kicking ass. Who's that?
- 5:39Speaker 7: This is by Jesse Collins, who's a local Boson, Montana resident.
- 5:43Speaker 7: He's from here. And in case you were not able
- 5:46Speaker 7: to decipher the lyrics, the lyrics are hunting, fishing, cooking, conserving,
- 5:55Speaker 7: and then the next one live to hunt to live,
- 6:02Speaker 7: and then the last line, which we something near and
- 6:05Speaker 7: cut before anyone could hear it is fresh set of
- 6:08Speaker 7: eyes finds more beans.
- 6:17Speaker 1: We're going to open a Christmas present real quick.
- 6:20Speaker 7: Oh yeah, it's behind you.
- 6:22Speaker 3: That's from It's not even.
- 6:24Speaker 5: For those of you who forgot to get on the

- 6:42Speaker 1: So listeners of the show will remember when we had
- 6:44Speaker 1: some some pale some anthropologists on the show. We participated.
- 6:48Speaker 1: Cal was there? Who all was there? Cal Clay in
- 6:53Speaker 1: this room?
- 6:54Speaker 5: Grin was there?
- 6:55Speaker 1: Max Maximilman Krinn was there. Uh We we participated in
- 7:00Speaker 1: and in butchering a buffalo with stone tools in cooperation
- 7:06Speaker 1: with anthropologists and archaeologists and a palaeontologist from uh. It
- 7:18Speaker 1: was it was Texas, Texas. Why why am I struggling
- 7:21Speaker 1: so much?
- 7:22Speaker 5: I thought the Ohio State Southern.
- 7:25Speaker 7: Methodist s m U and then Kent State Universe, Kent.
- 7:29Speaker 1: State University, Oregon State University, and we participated in a
- 7:34Speaker 1: project of we butchered. We were we were expert butchers
- 7:38Speaker 1: and butchered a buffalo with stone tools replicas of ice
- 7:43Speaker 1: age tool assemblages. And this present came in the mail.
- 7:47Speaker 7: It's very delicate.
- 7:51Speaker 4: Okay, do you have any idea what this is?
- 7:53Speaker 1: I really don't.
- 7:53Speaker 2: Really, it's gonna take time.
- 8:00Speaker 3: This end is brittle.
- 8:01Speaker 5: Taylor, you can't help. We've already been over this. Taylor.
- 8:05Speaker 5: Is the don't rip the wrapping paper person.
- 8:09Speaker 4: I like to save the anticipation.
- 8:11Speaker 7: Yeah, okay, Steve, you want to grab the which.
- 8:15Speaker 5: Is a great way to think about that because I've
- 8:17Speaker 5: never thought about it that way. Like what you like
- 8:19Speaker 5: is that.
- 8:22Speaker 3: Christmas you get to.
- 8:24Speaker 4: Spend that extra Okay, this might be that thing I really.
- 8:28Speaker 1: Want So this is from the Kent State University Experimental
- 8:32Speaker 1: Archaeology Lab.
- 8:34Speaker 4: The Golden Flashes and many apologies to people who are
- 8:37Speaker 4: listening and not watching.
- 8:39Speaker 5: Yeah, you gotta get on the YouTube train for those.
- 8:40Speaker 1: Well do you think it sounds good that this loud
- 8:43Speaker 1: paper noise to people at home?
- 8:44Speaker 5: I love it. I think it creates intrigue. People will
- 8:46Speaker 5: get online to see what's bubble wrap?
- 8:51Speaker 1: Come hang out with my kids. I'll put you in
- 8:53Speaker 1: a big room full bubble wrap, and you guys can
- 8:55Speaker 1: just have a home.
- 8:56Speaker 5: See you four hours later.
- 9:00Speaker 7: I don't think anything broke.
- 9:02Speaker 2: It's got to be a.
- 9:03Speaker 5: Spear, right, Well, we don't know.
- 9:06Speaker 1: Well, that says a happy news spear. And now I
- 9:09Speaker 1: remember saying I wanted some spears. Oh my goodness, there's
- 9:13Speaker 1: gonna be some bloodshed in this room.
- 9:15Speaker 8: There there are maybe eight different layers of wrapping papers.
- 9:19Speaker 7: Yeah, you did a good job. Well, I didn't realize
- 9:22Speaker 7: it was gonna take this long.
- 9:25Speaker 1: You got a free towel out of it.
- 9:27Speaker 5: A couple of free towels.
- 9:29Speaker 1: I don't go shower up.
- 9:34Speaker 7: All right, Steve, I think you should do the honors.
- 9:36Speaker 5: When we're no I'm watching, We're gonna get those towels
- 9:39Speaker 5: in the auction house oddities.
- 9:41Speaker 1: Oh, look at that.
- 9:45Speaker 2: You guys are doing great work.
- 9:47Speaker 4: Get a Christmas gift.
- 9:51Speaker 3: Noodles.
- 9:51Speaker 5: You guys got it.
- 9:52Speaker 4: I'm enjoying watching my present be open.
- 9:54Speaker 1: We got we got new towels, we got new pool noodles.
- 9:59Speaker 3: This is really ship I should have at least partially.
- 10:02Speaker 1: Yeah, Krin does some good producing and some poor producing,
- 10:08Speaker 1: and this would be in the this would be in
- 10:10Speaker 1: this is not a four point five or.
- 10:15Speaker 4: The explanation.
- 10:16Speaker 7: Can you're so close? Yeah, sorry audience for my terrible producing.
- 10:27Speaker 5: Maybe lay over that song again.
- 10:31Speaker 6: You can probably still play an end.
- 10:33Speaker 5: These pool noodles, for folks who don't haven't happened on
- 10:37Speaker 5: this trick yet, are super awesome for pre building h
- 10:42Speaker 5: any sort of fishing rig with a leader.
- 10:45Speaker 1: And just just to keep people entertaining while we open this.
- 10:50Speaker 1: If you're if you got pre rig mooching rigs, you
- 10:53Speaker 1: can stick your banana sinker in the end, right, stick
- 10:58Speaker 1: your banana sinker in the pool new and then wrap
- 11:01Speaker 1: the mooch leader around that pool noodle and fasten the
- 11:05Speaker 1: hooks into it. So I think it more.
- 11:06Speaker 6: Self to talk about the pool noodles are also good
- 11:09Speaker 6: for floating too.
- 11:13Speaker 1: I see that, I can see that.
- 11:16Speaker 7: Some pools present is revealed a couple of good walking sticks.
- 11:24Speaker 1: This is you right here, package you.
- 11:26Speaker 5: And snoop, snort, stink, damn it. The whole role is.
- 11:35Speaker 2: Be careful now.
- 11:36Speaker 6: Yeah, it's gonna be sharp.
- 11:41Speaker 5: I think for the amount of time it took to goodness.
- 11:46Speaker 1: Oh, that is badass, ladies, and John, that was worth
- 11:50Speaker 1: the way.
- 11:52Speaker 7: These are Clovis point tip hunting spears by Metton and
- 12:00Speaker 7: a former student. The points were hafted by a former
- 12:02Speaker 7: student of his, Michael.
- 12:04Speaker 5: Wilson Holy Cats.
- 12:07Speaker 7: Two of them are English flint, procured by him from
- 12:11Speaker 7: the White Chalk Cliffs of southern England.
- 12:15Speaker 3: Uh.
- 12:15Speaker 7: And then the third one is Georgetown chirt from Texas.
- 12:19Speaker 7: It's the same kind of shirt we used in the experiment,
- 12:26Speaker 7: and the wood is a pine treated pine shaft.
- 12:29Speaker 1: I don't know you guys really well. So you're the
- 12:31Speaker 1: ones I'm thinking about when I think about just want.
- 12:33Speaker 3: Just he's looking at you. The game.
- 12:39Speaker 1: Is ribs man, Max.
- 12:42Speaker 5: Can I see that that big hoss there?
- 12:44Speaker 1: That's pretty cool. Gonna keep working down our list.
- 12:48Speaker 5: Everybody ask you to move that spear that you leaned
- 12:54Speaker 5: right in front of the camera.
- 12:58Speaker 1: Fellow, this is the part of this is part of
- 13:00Speaker 1: this part of the show where we we do listener comments. Okay,
- 13:05Speaker 1: Fella wrote in says twenty twenty three, is this is
- 13:10Speaker 1: more bad producing? Good producer would have gone in there
- 13:15Speaker 1: and wrote was. But this was.
- 13:18Speaker 7: A quote from the guy. He wrote in twenty twenty three.
- 13:22Speaker 1: You would a good producer would have wrote sick sick
- 13:25Speaker 1: after that.
- 13:25Speaker 3: Yes, as I say, it's got toppy with a writer.
- 13:29Speaker 1: Twenty twenty three is considered this is a listener thing.
- 13:32Speaker 1: This is a good question. Twenty twenty three is considered
- 13:36Speaker 1: a masked year where acorn product acorn, where acorn production
- 13:41Speaker 1: and other nut trees have upwards of five times their
- 13:44Speaker 1: typical production. I've never seen anything like the amount of
- 13:48Speaker 1: acorns produced this year. I would love to hear the
- 13:52Speaker 1: crew discuss their thoughts on the impact of a masked
- 13:55Speaker 1: year on dear harvest. He says, not to take his
- 14:00Speaker 1: word for this. Deer harvest across the Midwest this year
- 14:03Speaker 1: is way down, and the only consistent common theme I
- 14:07Speaker 1: can find is that it's a mass year. I've hunted
- 14:10Speaker 1: the same fields in central Wisconsin for twenty years and
- 14:13Speaker 1: always see twenty to thirty deer out every night about
- 14:16Speaker 1: an hour before sunset. And this is the first year
- 14:19Speaker 1: I'm not seeing hardly any coming out to feed in
- 14:21Speaker 1: the fields. But when you go through the woods, you
- 14:25Speaker 1: jump all kinds of deer. I'll buy that if you.
- 14:31Speaker 5: I think Pat Dirkin wrote it up. I think Michigan's
- 14:35Speaker 5: one of the states that's us pretty significant hunter decline.
- 14:38Speaker 5: Hunter participation decline for this season. So that's a reason
- 14:43Speaker 5: for he can't have a lot of deer dying by
- 14:45Speaker 5: hunters if there's not a lot of hunters out.
- 14:47Speaker 1: There, huh, I don't know.
- 14:48Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 14:49Speaker 5: And then as we talked about, you want some real
- 14:51Speaker 5: patients and sit in a tree and watch nothing happen.
- 14:55Speaker 5: Get out of your tree, man.
- 14:57Speaker 1: What are they attributing the decline?
- 15:00Speaker 5: Well, if it's a really significant number, if you go
- 15:03Speaker 5: back to like I think there's a peak sometime in
- 15:08Speaker 5: the nineties, early nineties.
- 15:10Speaker 1: Not the COVID pandemic, No.
- 15:13Speaker 5: Like a significant peak. You'll have to eat old Padnerkins article.
- 15:16Speaker 5: I think he wrote it up for the Meat Eater
- 15:18Speaker 5: dot Com. I will a little little website you might
- 15:20Speaker 5: be familiar with I.
- 15:21Speaker 1: One thing I could say about this what he's what
- 15:23Speaker 1: he's talking about is you'll find that people have a
- 15:28Speaker 1: tendency because people that are driving to work, driving around,
- 15:31Speaker 1: you see deer in a field. So a lot of
- 15:33Speaker 1: guys are gonna like they just instinctively are gonna go
- 15:35Speaker 1: sit the field edge.
- 15:37Speaker 3: You know.
- 15:38Speaker 1: It's just why I'm go sit the edge of the
- 15:40Speaker 1: field and wash the field because I see deer out
- 15:41Speaker 1: in the field. So yeah, the fact that there's a
- 15:43Speaker 1: bunch of food would I'm trying to say, the fact
- 15:47Speaker 1: that there's a ton of food in the woods would
- 15:49Speaker 1: absolutely affect all that kind of stuff.
- 15:53Speaker 5: They don't have to expose themselves because there's plenty of
- 15:56Speaker 5: food undercover.
- 15:57Speaker 1: They don't need to take risk. Talk talk to Clay.
- 16:00Speaker 1: When I was when I was saying acorns and not acorns,
- 16:02Speaker 1: I was goofing on Clay. You talked to Clay about
- 16:04Speaker 1: when it is a good master here because well, he
- 16:07Speaker 1: likes to talk about it because it gives them more
- 16:08Speaker 1: chances to say acrons.
- 16:09Speaker 8: This is a Clay conversation. Yeah, it really likes and
- 16:12Speaker 8: have a lot of fun with that.
- 16:13Speaker 1: He likes any conversation that involves acrons.
- 16:17Speaker 6: Clay successful on one of these years.
- 16:22Speaker 1: I don't know. I know that he's always looking for
- 16:23Speaker 1: a tree that's rain and acorns.
- 16:25Speaker 6: Yeah, is it?
- 16:26Speaker 7: Is it kind of like nationally across the country or
- 16:29Speaker 7: it's a certain area this.
- 16:30Speaker 1: Man, this is I don't I'm just reading.
- 16:32Speaker 3: This so I'm trying to keep up. So there's an
- 16:38Speaker 3: over there's a surplus of acorns out there, and the
- 16:40Speaker 3: deer is staying in the trees and not out of
- 16:42Speaker 3: the field.
- 16:43Speaker 1: This is an actual thing here.
- 16:45Speaker 3: This is a real thing. No.
- 16:46Speaker 1: No, what I'm saying is bumper crops of acorns is
- 16:49Speaker 1: a real thing. Have you have you ever heard with
- 16:51Speaker 1: with you ever heard of the thing predator swamping? No,
- 16:55Speaker 1: So if you look at wildlife populations that are very
- 16:59Speaker 1: singed and when they reproduce, the thinking is one of
- 17:05Speaker 1: the advantages of being very synchronized is that the abundance
- 17:10Speaker 1: of food overwhelms predators and some of that stuff is
- 17:14Speaker 1: gonna Like if lay a big group of ground nesting birds,
- 17:18Speaker 1: they all lay at the same time, some of them
- 17:22Speaker 1: are going to survive predation. But if you were to
- 17:27Speaker 1: if they were going to all lay over the course
- 17:29Speaker 1: of two months and you had a population of predators
- 17:32Speaker 1: pursuing those eggs. It's like they have a greater chance
- 17:35Speaker 1: of just finding them because it's a slowly rolling out
- 17:39Speaker 1: food source. So they use this term predator swamping, meaning
- 17:44Speaker 1: animals that get in a big group and all drop
- 17:46Speaker 1: their young at once. Then predators will get some, but
- 17:51Speaker 1: they'll the animals, the babies will quickly be up and
- 17:54Speaker 1: running about and it's a higher it's more likely to survive. Okay, trees.
- 18:01Speaker 1: We had a guy sitting in the seat you're sitting in,
- 18:05Speaker 1: well all right, a forester, and he came on and
- 18:10Speaker 1: explained to us was that guy's name. He's a good guest,
- 18:13Speaker 1: Michael Snyders. He came on and explained to us that
- 18:16Speaker 1: they find something similar occurs in populations communities of trees
- 18:24Speaker 1: where the oaks will for whatever reason now and then
- 18:28Speaker 1: just totally kick ass and predator swamp the acorns. And
- 18:34Speaker 1: you can go into stands of mature trees and find
- 18:37Speaker 1: that a lot of those trees as old as they
- 18:39Speaker 1: are have the same birthday, meaning there's years that are
- 18:43Speaker 1: just really good. They drop so many acorns, and then
- 18:47Speaker 1: you get a bunch of recruitment. You get a bunch
- 18:48Speaker 1: of oak recruitment because deer didn't eat all the damn things.
- 18:52Speaker 3: Okay, you follow them.
- 18:53Speaker 1: Yeah, this is not something I've picked up through observation.
- 18:56Speaker 1: This was just explained to me.
- 18:58Speaker 5: So out here. Elk or like the example that I
- 19:01Speaker 5: think makes the most sense to people. Elk calves first
- 19:06Speaker 5: forty eight hours on the ground most susceptible to predation.
- 19:10Speaker 5: Then basically every minute past that forty eight hour mark,
- 19:15Speaker 5: they're more and more capable of getting up and hauling
- 19:18Speaker 5: ass and running away. So if you think about making
- 19:23Speaker 5: a tackle, right, every tackle takes that pursuit, angle, impact, recovery, reset,
- 19:33Speaker 5: and do it all over again.
- 19:34Speaker 3: Right.
- 19:34Speaker 5: It all takes time. So all the predators are out
- 19:37Speaker 5: there trying to make these open field tackles on these calves,
- 19:42Speaker 5: and that all takes time and of it. You know,
- 19:45Speaker 5: they all can't be tackling everyone at the same time.
- 19:49Speaker 3: Got you changes.
- 19:51Speaker 5: A angles change, and there's more of them. There's balls
- 19:54Speaker 5: popping up and everything.
- 19:58Speaker 4: This viewer who wrote this, and he's talking.
- 20:01Speaker 1: About acorns, he used acorns.
- 20:04Speaker 4: Sorry, is this is it a big deal? Is this
- 20:07Speaker 4: as a problem?
- 20:09Speaker 1: Well, he like many, like many good outdoors me, he's
- 20:15Speaker 1: a curious student of the woods, and so he's just
- 20:20Speaker 1: I think he's just curious. I think that that I
- 20:22Speaker 1: think that it would be a big deal if you
- 20:24Speaker 1: found that you had a really low deer harvest, because
- 20:27Speaker 1: it would be is it that there's no deer around?
- 20:30Speaker 1: Or is it that something else changed? But worth worthy
- 20:34Speaker 1: of discussion. But I think that he's just throwing it
- 20:39Speaker 1: out there. But it brings up this this issue I'm
- 20:42Speaker 1: thinking of, is just backing it up by this idea
- 20:45Speaker 1: that that masting trees will seem to like you don't
- 20:48Speaker 1: imagine two different trees are talking to each other, you know,
- 20:52Speaker 1: I don't know, Like, I don't know how they how
- 20:55Speaker 1: it becomes decided by a stand of oh, that it
- 21:00Speaker 1: becomes decided that this year is the year we're all
- 21:02Speaker 1: going to just rain down acorns. I have no idea.
- 21:06Speaker 1: I'd love to understand it.
- 21:07Speaker 5: On the successful hunter side of things, there are groups
- 21:12Speaker 5: of hunters that will, for whatever reason, be more happy
- 21:16Speaker 5: complaining about the fact that there's so many acorns in
- 21:20Speaker 5: the woods that the deer won't come out of the
- 21:22Speaker 5: woods and that's why hunting sucks this year. For whatever reason,
- 21:27Speaker 5: that is more satisfying to them than changing their stand
- 21:30Speaker 5: location to be in the woods.
- 21:32Speaker 3: That makes sense, right, I love to complain.
- 21:34Speaker 6: Yeah, yes, it's probably the people that are complaining about this,
- 21:38Speaker 6: or probably the people that didn't harvest the deer this
- 21:41Speaker 6: year's Yeah, that's what I'm thinking.
- 21:43Speaker 5: Normally I go out the first weekend and the first morning,
- 21:47Speaker 5: this is what happens. And it didn't happen this year.
- 21:49Speaker 5: So something is majorly wrong.
- 21:53Speaker 1: Guy wrote in this is a good one. You want
- 21:55Speaker 1: to talk about stuff that matters. I'm waiting while I
- 22:01Speaker 1: was asking them, no, when you said that to someone,
- 22:04Speaker 1: you're not asking them no, was the guy wrote in. Now,
- 22:13Speaker 1: we we've covered on and off the the ins and
- 22:17Speaker 1: outs of New Jersey experimenting with a bear hunt. They
- 22:22Speaker 1: had a bear hunt, they lost a bear hunt. They
- 22:24Speaker 1: got the bear hunt back, thank goodness. They have the
- 22:26Speaker 1: highest density I think of any state bears per unit
- 22:31Speaker 1: of space of any state. But this guy said, there's
- 22:34Speaker 1: a professional harasser. There's a woman and she has a
- 22:39Speaker 1: little posse of people. She does adjacent to a large
- 22:42Speaker 1: block of state land where guys will hunt, and she'll
- 22:48Speaker 1: she and this little anti hunter posse will go out
- 22:52Speaker 1: and harass hunters who are coming out of the woods
- 22:57Speaker 1: with a bear, and this guy says him and his
- 22:58Speaker 1: buddy got a bear. They they put it on a
- 23:03Speaker 1: log Indian style, he says with his fern, like tying
- 23:06Speaker 1: it feet down to a log. When I've done that
- 23:09Speaker 1: in the past, I find it sways in a very
- 23:14Speaker 1: irritating fashion. If you're ever out there doing this, get
- 23:19Speaker 1: two logs. Put one over each of your shoulder, because
- 23:21Speaker 1: when you put it on one log, it just starts
- 23:23Speaker 1: to get Yeah, it's like a pendulum. They hike it
- 23:27Speaker 1: out four miles and low and behold. They run into
- 23:29Speaker 1: a group of people and so he says that we
- 23:30Speaker 1: do what you're doing any hiking trail and we go
- 23:32Speaker 1: how you guys doing today, and then proceeded to just
- 23:38Speaker 1: get harassed and then docks. You guys know what that means.
- 23:45Speaker 5: I keep seeing the word pop up. I don't know
- 23:47Speaker 5: what it means.
- 23:51Speaker 1: So they the this, this this posse of anti hunters
- 23:57Speaker 1: doxes them because they get their licensed plight numb and
- 24:01Speaker 1: there are images that they can put on social media.
- 24:04Speaker 3: Uh.
- 24:06Speaker 1: They reached out to a game warden who said that
- 24:09Speaker 1: they would look into it, and he's like, what can
- 24:12Speaker 1: someone do. That is just that's just cat that is
- 24:15Speaker 1: categorically illegal. I mean even New Jersey. Even New Jersey
- 24:20Speaker 1: has a hunter harassment law. You can't if someone's legally hunting,
- 24:26Speaker 1: it's illegal to come up and annoy them or harass
- 24:28Speaker 1: them or try to molest their hunt. It's just like,
- 24:30Speaker 1: it's just illegal. If this is true. I'm just taking
- 24:33Speaker 1: us at face value. If this is true and someone
- 24:35Speaker 1: said blew you off, like, oh, I'll take a look
- 24:37Speaker 1: into it, it's just it's just it's not it's if
- 24:42Speaker 1: it's as presented, it's just a it's just a thing
- 24:44Speaker 1: where that you can't do that that's illegal, that should
- 24:47Speaker 1: not happen to you.
- 24:48Speaker 7: Maybe hunters in each state should get to know and
- 24:50Speaker 7: read the codified anti hunter laws in their respective states.
- 24:56Speaker 1: Antment harassment laws, yes.
- 24:58Speaker 5: Because it is like a stupid wording thing, right, like
- 25:01Speaker 5: these people didn't interfere with the hunt. They just harassed
- 25:05Speaker 5: them when they came out of the woods with the bear,
- 25:07Speaker 5: which you know may not make it by the eyes
- 25:11Speaker 5: of the law of people the way it's written.
- 25:13Speaker 3: Right.
- 25:14Speaker 5: Yeah, I would continually be posting pictures of bear ham
- 25:21Speaker 5: smoking and bear chili and talking about the amount of
- 25:25Speaker 5: people you fed with that bear.
- 25:28Speaker 1: I like that cal Yeah, doctor Randall, what did you
- 25:31Speaker 1: determine about the quail article?
- 25:35Speaker 8: I was waiting for the uh the payoff?
- 25:38Speaker 1: There? Did you who scratched it out?
- 25:41Speaker 3: Oh?
- 25:41Speaker 7: I just removed it because we seem to have skipped it.
- 25:44Speaker 1: But I want to say a thing of interest from
- 25:46Speaker 1: the Yeah, there's this article we're taking a look at.
- 25:49Speaker 1: It's about Tennessee's quail comeback and AI, and the article tries,
- 25:54Speaker 1: in very tenuous fashion, in my view, to link the
- 25:59Speaker 1: use of AI with a quail comeback and I, and
- 26:03Speaker 1: the relationship is not how would you put it, there's
- 26:09Speaker 1: no correlation.
- 26:10Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 26:11Speaker 1: However, it's an interesting thing to do surveys to try
- 26:17Speaker 1: to locate quail which have been which are their numbers
- 26:20Speaker 1: are doing a little bit better in Tennessee. In certain
- 26:23Speaker 1: places in Tennessee, as some people know, and many people
- 26:27Speaker 1: in the South, have experienced Bob White quail numbers or
- 26:30Speaker 1: have been at just depressingly low levels across a lot
- 26:34Speaker 1: of the traditional range. Too many, too many reasons why
- 26:41Speaker 1: to name them all? Some people point to fire ants,
- 26:46Speaker 1: some people point to fire suppression. What am I missing?
- 26:49Speaker 5: Changes in trapping oh, too.
- 26:52Speaker 1: Many mid size Yeah, a lot of mid sized predators
- 26:54Speaker 1: because fur prices have been so low.
- 26:57Speaker 3: And on and on.
- 26:58Speaker 1: They just talking about guys. Research is being to put
- 27:00Speaker 1: AI to use. Every time you read about AI, you
- 27:02Speaker 1: feel like, oh my god, it's so scary. They're coming
- 27:04Speaker 1: from my job. But here they're using AI to go
- 27:06Speaker 1: out and take recordings, just recording ambient sound. Right, So
- 27:12Speaker 1: you can place a recording device out in some habitat
- 27:15Speaker 1: and it records all the ambient sound. You imagine, well,
- 27:17Speaker 1: what are you going to do now? You hire some
- 27:19Speaker 1: grad student to listen to tens of thousands of hours
- 27:23Speaker 1: of ambient sound recordings to be like, oh, there's one
- 27:28Speaker 1: I heard a quail, right, and then log where it
- 27:31Speaker 1: was and when it was. And these researchers are able
- 27:34Speaker 1: to take all of this. They got forty some listening devices.
- 27:37Speaker 1: They're able to take all of that and use AI
- 27:41Speaker 1: to scrub out and identify the sounds of quail.
- 27:43Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 27:43Speaker 8: And so it makes a case that this gives them
- 27:46Speaker 8: a better understanding of or it's a more useful way.
- 27:49Speaker 5: To closer to actual population.
- 27:51Speaker 8: Yeah, but it doesn't actually explain how it causally impacts it.
- 27:57Speaker 5: Doesn't say how quail or recovering?
- 28:00Speaker 1: Right was the fun? Well, yeah, this brings up one
- 28:04Speaker 1: of my favorite things about media, And I could say
- 28:08Speaker 1: this in media, the headline that really over promises.
- 28:14Speaker 5: Yeah, uh, are you aware of the story. I've done
- 28:18Speaker 5: a bunch of work with Pheasants Forever and quail Forever
- 28:20Speaker 5: and greatly respect the organization. And when you're around they
- 28:26Speaker 5: employ hundreds, literally one hundreds of biologists at that conservation organization,
- 28:32Speaker 5: and when you're around a group of these the story
- 28:34Speaker 5: always pops up. In the spring, they do a lot
- 28:37Speaker 5: of nesting surveys. They try to get a general population survey,
- 28:43Speaker 5: and then they can submit those numbers and then the
- 28:46Speaker 5: state can change the harvest regulations for those individual species. So,
- 28:51Speaker 5: like Steve was saying with quail, trying to listen for quail,
- 28:54Speaker 5: well they also listen. They do visual counts with pheasants,
- 28:58Speaker 5: and they used to team up with all their world
- 29:02Speaker 5: a lot of that today.
- 29:04Speaker 7: Uh.
- 29:04Speaker 5: They used to team up with a lot of rural
- 29:06Speaker 5: mail carriers, okay and so, and they have these very
- 29:10Speaker 5: specific that sly do this very specific criteria of at
- 29:17Speaker 5: this time in the morning, you drive this stretch your
- 29:19Speaker 5: own and you drive it this fast, and then you
- 29:22Speaker 5: report either what you see in the case of pheasants,
- 29:25Speaker 5: or what you hear. And in this case, the famous
- 29:29Speaker 5: kind of study that they talk about, or the instance
- 29:31Speaker 5: rather is on rough grouse because they get out and
- 29:37Speaker 5: they and they drum and they display sounds like you're
- 29:41Speaker 5: trying to.
- 29:41Speaker 1: Start an old lawnmoarder. I can do it perfectly ready.
- 29:48Speaker 6: No, that's not it.
- 29:51Speaker 3: It's more like this co to get focus together in
- 30:04Speaker 3: the zone like flow state.
- 30:06Speaker 1: No, it's like it's like, no Max had it.
- 30:13Speaker 5: So I want to say this is northern it's either
- 30:15Speaker 5: Michigan or Minnesota. I apologize for mixing the m states
- 30:20Speaker 5: up there, but it's Michigan or Minnesota. And you know,
- 30:26Speaker 5: thirty year career of a rural male route carrier.
- 30:29Speaker 1: That's a that's such a I never thought of that.
- 30:31Speaker 1: This is a genius thing to do. I'm always impressed
- 30:33Speaker 1: when how long you had a shop, He's like, I've
- 30:35Speaker 1: been driving his rolls for twenty years. You've seen a
- 30:37Speaker 1: lot est.
- 30:37Speaker 5: Yeah, and the counts are always dismal, dismal, dismal, dismal.
- 30:44Speaker 1: First you be like, do you hunt pheasants? Because if
- 30:45Speaker 1: you hunt pheasants. You don't get to participate. You're not
- 30:48Speaker 1: the real carrier nothing I have seen nothing, not one
- 30:54Speaker 1: shocking help you there.
- 30:55Speaker 6: Are, and then come around next time and have a
- 30:57Speaker 6: banner pheasant year.
- 30:58Speaker 5: This particular dude just flat out couldn't hear it was
- 31:02Speaker 5: just freaking death. Could not hear that. Yeah, and so
- 31:09Speaker 5: you hear that story often in that circle. So that's
- 31:13Speaker 5: where AI cam cam come in handy and eliminates the uh,
- 31:19Speaker 5: the bias.
- 31:20Speaker 3: You can call it a little quality control.
- 31:22Speaker 1: And I gotta tell you a quick story, nothing to
- 31:26Speaker 1: do with any of this, but I keep thinking about it.
- 31:27Speaker 1: As Clay was talking to a this don in Arkansas.
- 31:31Speaker 1: Is this family's old guys and they really had just
- 31:34Speaker 1: their long run of killing giant bucks, and other people
- 31:38Speaker 1: would just get jealous and pissed. And so what you're doing.
- 31:41Speaker 1: You're jealous of someone, you start like rumors about them.
- 31:44Speaker 1: And Clay says, one of these old guys, you know
- 31:47Speaker 1: a lot of people say that you killed all those
- 31:51Speaker 1: bucks at night, And the guy says, you know how
- 31:56Speaker 1: hard it is to kill one of those bucks in
- 31:57Speaker 1: the daytime? Can you imagine doing it in the dark.
- 32:04Speaker 6: That's pretty funny.
- 32:15Speaker 1: Here's a big news. Are we doing this right? We're
- 32:17Speaker 1: announcing this now. Listeners to the show will probably know
- 32:24Speaker 1: the Meat Eater, Fish and Game Cookbook, which big best seller.
- 32:30Speaker 1: Half a million of those suckers are out there in print.
- 32:32Speaker 1: Well do you follow up the it's usually bad? Phil?
- 32:36Speaker 1: Would you say it's bad when there's a sophomore effort?
- 32:39Speaker 1: Is that always negative?
- 32:40Speaker 5: And it's it's kind of a test. It's you know,
- 32:43Speaker 5: like a ban will put out a record it's great,
- 32:45Speaker 5: and that's like, well, let's see how their second one
- 32:47Speaker 5: and goes.
- 32:47Speaker 8: I think this is I think that's just a I mean,
- 32:50Speaker 8: you can have a great sophomore.
- 32:52Speaker 5: Yeah, it's kind of like a benchmark for the sophomore.
- 32:55Speaker 3: Just I think it's just like an order, you know, like.
- 32:57Speaker 1: Order got it. So it's not like passingerudgment. Yeah. I
- 33:01Speaker 1: feel like I read like like the sophomore album didn't do.
- 33:03Speaker 3: Well what they call it to fall separate.
- 33:10Speaker 1: Okay, I'm not going to use that. The much anticipated
- 33:14Speaker 1: follow up there, it is, the much anticipated follow up
- 33:18Speaker 1: to The Meat Eater, Fishing Game Cookbook is publicating. That's
- 33:22Speaker 1: not a word publishing. Its publishing April twenty third. It's
- 33:30Speaker 1: available available for pre order now wherever books are sold.
- 33:34Speaker 1: It is called The Meat Eater Outdoor Cookbook, Wild Game
- 33:41Speaker 1: Recipes for the grill, smoker, camp stove, and Campfire. For
- 33:45Speaker 1: a long time we were going to call the book
- 33:48Speaker 1: from the Backyard to the back Country, but felt that
- 33:50Speaker 1: it was two cutesy. But you know what I mean,
- 33:55Speaker 1: from the backyard to the back country. But it is
- 33:58Speaker 1: The Meat Eater Outdoor cook Wild Game Recipes for the grill, smoker,
- 34:03Speaker 1: camp stove, and Campfire. This book covers everything in shocking detail,
- 34:09Speaker 1: stunning photography of how to take a marmot. This is
- 34:13Speaker 1: just kind of making a point up front, how to
- 34:16Speaker 1: take a marmot and cook it the way small animals
- 34:20Speaker 1: were cooked by planes tribes on the American Great Planes
- 34:24Speaker 1: for one, where they would take small animals and just
- 34:26Speaker 1: simply roll them around in the ashes and burn all
- 34:30Speaker 1: their hair off and then roast them skin in. We
- 34:32Speaker 1: talk about that as a setup, but then it gets
- 34:35Speaker 1: into all manner of barbecuing, smoking, everything, camp cookery. It's
- 34:43Speaker 1: way more beautiful than our last book. More than one
- 34:48Speaker 1: hundred recipes for cooking outdoors, which includes everything down to
- 34:55Speaker 1: frying fish, which is best done outdoors. Outdoors. It's cool.
- 35:03Speaker 1: It's got a lot of stuff. It has like a
- 35:05Speaker 1: real coffee table book quality to it, because some of
- 35:08Speaker 1: the stuff you might not ever make, but it's so
- 35:09Speaker 1: badass looking that you'll just like to look at it.
- 35:13Speaker 1: It's gorgeous.
- 35:14Speaker 3: Did the beer Guts make it?
- 35:16Speaker 1: No, the beer guts aren't in it.
- 35:17Speaker 3: That's for the next book, the junior book.
- 35:21Speaker 1: Calum vent at the recipe this morning, which is Guts.
- 35:23Speaker 3: And Beer phenomenal. It was four point five.
- 35:31Speaker 1: We will be talking about this cookbook in greater detail
- 35:33Speaker 1: later on, but I'm just gonna remind everybody now. It's
- 35:36Speaker 1: available for pre order pubs April twenty third, and it
- 35:39Speaker 1: is a if you love the meat Eater, Fish and
- 35:42Speaker 1: Game cookbook, this is that same great quality, highly tested recipes,
- 35:48Speaker 1: but everything for cooking outdoors again, from having a big
- 35:52Speaker 1: old party in your yard to cooking for you and
- 35:55Speaker 1: your body on top of a mountain with a backpack
- 35:57Speaker 1: and stove. Everything for outdoor cooking. Now's the part you
- 36:02Speaker 1: guys come in.
- 36:02Speaker 4: Hell, Yeah, I didn't mean that, would you say? April
- 36:06Speaker 4: twenty ninth, I gotta get that for the old man
- 36:10Speaker 4: A twenty third Yeah.
- 36:11Speaker 5: Well, We know these guys are fired up on food.
- 36:13Speaker 1: So I think.
- 36:14Speaker 4: Beautiful that Barnes and Noble get to where you need
- 36:16Speaker 4: to go, get that hardcover.
- 36:17Speaker 3: Let it put it right there. You a walk in
- 36:19Speaker 3: goes that the new is that the new sophomore.
- 36:21Speaker 4: Media listen anticipated is that the sophomore highly anticipated new one.
- 36:26Speaker 3: You don't have to start pushing this even more a
- 36:28Speaker 3: month before Father's Day.
- 36:29Speaker 1: Oh, we're gonna push it heavy. This is just a
- 36:31Speaker 1: prelude to the push because it's so good. We worked
- 36:33Speaker 1: on I mean we worked on it for years.
- 36:34Speaker 4: Pretty push.
- 36:35Speaker 1: We worked on it for years.
- 36:37Speaker 3: That's good.
- 36:37Speaker 1: We even't had to hire I'll tell you this, this
- 36:39Speaker 1: will tittlate the listeners. Then we're done talking about it.
- 36:42Speaker 1: We had the higher firefighters to be there for some
- 36:46Speaker 1: of our preparations.
- 36:48Speaker 4: Really m hmm, like just in case there was a fire, or.
- 36:51Speaker 1: We're doing some of the stuff in the summer, and
- 36:53Speaker 1: and and just because of various issues. But I'm saying
- 36:56Speaker 1: that's the kind of cookbook this is.
- 36:57Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 36:58Speaker 5: They also make fire photography.
- 37:00Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, a lot of ways to burn your fingers.
- 37:06Speaker 1: That should have been the subtitle. Well, let me give
- 37:08Speaker 1: you a couple for instances, how to take a we
- 37:11Speaker 1: do so everyone knows, like burying like lou wild style pigs, right, So,
- 37:17Speaker 1: how to cook venison shoulders, venison legs in a half
- 37:21Speaker 1: of an oil drum. How to put whole ducks and
- 37:26Speaker 1: birds just on spikes on sticks and cook them like
- 37:32Speaker 1: a ring so you have a fire with a ring
- 37:35Speaker 1: of birds roasting on sticks around the fire. But also
- 37:38Speaker 1: how to throw a kick ass catfish fry so rick
- 37:41Speaker 1: really technical stuff that like that requires a lot of
- 37:46Speaker 1: requires a lot of macguiver, ring making, contraptions, making makeshift grills,
- 37:51Speaker 1: making makeshift smokers using souped up sophisticated smokers is all
- 37:55Speaker 1: in there. If you like to go outside and cook.
- 37:57Speaker 1: This is your book.
- 37:58Speaker 3: This is it. What's your favorite Uh? What's the most
- 38:01Speaker 3: unique recipe in there? Too? Good question?
- 38:03Speaker 1: My favorite one in there isn't even in there, but
- 38:05Speaker 1: there's pictures of it in there. Is no It's like
- 38:09Speaker 1: one of those things you can't really it's not really
- 38:10Speaker 1: a recipe, but it's the thing you talk about. There's
- 38:13Speaker 1: two because they both involved contraptions that I like a lot.
- 38:17Speaker 3: Uh.
- 38:19Speaker 1: When where I grew up, it was you would you
- 38:21Speaker 1: would like if you got married, if your kid graduated
- 38:25Speaker 1: from high school, if you turn forty, you would throw
- 38:28Speaker 1: a pig roast. You would host a pig roast where
- 38:30Speaker 1: you take a whole hog and and you know, put
- 38:33Speaker 1: the apple in its mouth and cook the pig. Yeah,
- 38:37Speaker 1: so we do. We have a great little welded up
- 38:39Speaker 1: contraption for doing that and talk about that. But it's
- 38:41Speaker 1: not so much a recipe, it's like a it's a
- 38:42Speaker 1: procedure for a recipe. One of my favorite things is
- 38:45Speaker 1: if you ever go down when you're in Mexico, particularly
- 38:48Speaker 1: down the Yucatan peninsula, and you see that they're making
- 38:51Speaker 1: those tacos l pastor where they have that that vertical
- 38:55Speaker 1: spit meat the meat rock. Ye, a vertical spit mounted
- 38:59Speaker 1: with lakelayers of mounted with layers down there. It's like
- 39:03Speaker 1: layers of pork and a pineapple sits on top of
- 39:05Speaker 1: the spit and there's a vertical heat source and so
- 39:09Speaker 1: it spins and then they cut tacos out of that.
- 39:15Speaker 3: So that sounds incredible.
- 39:16Speaker 1: No, that's really cool. Tacos l pastor. And I have
- 39:20Speaker 1: my buddy Ronnie made me my own one when I
- 39:25Speaker 1: got married, and that very uh, it's called a trompo,
- 39:30Speaker 1: and that very trompo I aftermarket rigged it with a
- 39:33Speaker 1: motor so you don't have to turn it by hand.
- 39:35Speaker 1: But that very trompo is in the book. And it's
- 39:38Speaker 1: how to make your own tacos l pastor so you
- 39:40Speaker 1: can be like Mexico and have a sweet taco party
- 39:44Speaker 1: with what we use deer meat. Deer meat on a
- 39:47Speaker 1: vertical spit. It's incredible looking, it's a real sight. It's
- 39:52Speaker 1: got a eye appeal.
- 39:52Speaker 3: And then didn't make the book just depends.
- 39:54Speaker 1: On that that's in the book. That's very detailed description
- 39:57Speaker 1: in the book. Roast is like it's like it's just
- 40:01Speaker 1: the thing you got to talk people through.
- 40:04Speaker 3: Yeah, it's a process, right, yeah, the.
- 40:06Speaker 1: Whole is it? Seventy five pounds is two hundred pounds? Yeah,
- 40:10Speaker 1: phenomenal book. All right, we return to our guests now,
- 40:14Speaker 1: Will Taylor, how do you guys want to talk about
- 40:16Speaker 1: your careers, your other careers, your pre col Yeah.
- 40:19Speaker 3: Yeah, ball, we can talk. We can talk ball.
- 40:21Speaker 4: We went to ball.
- 40:22Speaker 3: Yeah, don't then you feel bad the whole time, like, man,
- 40:24Speaker 3: we were pretty worthless and all these huntings.
- 40:26Speaker 4: Yeah no, yeah, yeah, yeah, there's a level of like, uh,
- 40:29Speaker 4: because you get you guys are doers, Like I think
- 40:32Speaker 4: of us as like animals that live in houses and
- 40:34Speaker 4: that our parents got Relled's like, hey, we're done with
- 40:36Speaker 4: these animals. They took us out in the woods and
- 40:38Speaker 4: then we met you guys out door dogs first time.
- 40:42Speaker 4: They start talking abou all this shit, and we're like,
- 40:43Speaker 4: oh my god, we really have no idea what we're
- 40:45Speaker 4: doing here. But yeah, yeah, yeah, football, we did that.
- 40:49Speaker 4: So I played. I was at the Titans from twenty
- 40:52Speaker 4: fourteen until twenty twenty two, and that's where Will and
- 40:55Speaker 4: I met. But as I told you guys before the show,
- 40:57Speaker 4: I grew up in Arizona, went to the University of Michigan,
- 40:59Speaker 4: who I don't know when the show's coming out, but
- 41:01Speaker 4: they are playing in the National Championship on Monday.
- 41:04Speaker 1: Do you still feel an affinity?
- 41:06Speaker 4: So when I first left Michigan, I didn't at all.
- 41:09Speaker 4: I was kind of anti Michigan. And then well, when
- 41:12Speaker 4: I was there was like oh nine to thirteen, which
- 41:15Speaker 4: is when we were just terrible, we're awful football team,
- 41:18Speaker 4: and I and I get drafted. I was kind of,
- 41:20Speaker 4: oh whatever, And I play with these guys that went
- 41:22Speaker 4: to Alabama Georgia, Clemson, like all these teams that are
- 41:25Speaker 4: like winning national championships over and over again, and they
- 41:28Speaker 4: had like all this big pride. And when we got
- 41:31Speaker 4: Jim Harball, I started to feel a little bit more pride.
- 41:34Speaker 3: And then he started doing that. I was like, you know,
- 41:35Speaker 3: get this guy out of here. What do we do?
- 41:37Speaker 4: This guy needs to go. And now, like this is
- 41:39Speaker 4: actually the first year, even before the year, I chose
- 41:43Speaker 4: to be like a fan I want. I wanted to
- 41:44Speaker 4: buy into being a fan of football and like watch
- 41:47Speaker 4: a sport being like my first year out of football.
- 41:49Speaker 1: So it's kind of a natural progression. You know. If
- 41:53Speaker 1: you imagine you grow up somewhere, all you want to
- 41:55Speaker 1: do is get out of there. You get out of there,
- 41:58Speaker 1: and then later you nostalgia and you're like, I should
- 42:02Speaker 1: just move back through with my kids.
- 42:04Speaker 3: That's exactly that you nailed it.
- 42:05Speaker 4: Because when I was in Arizona growing up, I was
- 42:07Speaker 4: like the desert ugly, it's not fun here. I want
- 42:10Speaker 4: to go somewhere, somewhere the four seasons end up going
- 42:13Speaker 4: to mission. My first winter, I had a pair of
- 42:15Speaker 4: Vans on probably the same jeans I'm wearing now, in
- 42:17Speaker 4: a zip up hooding, I was like, perfect winter. Yeah, literally,
- 42:20Speaker 4: I like saw snow like two times in my life.
- 42:22Speaker 4: The first one, I was like, if there was a
- 42:23Speaker 4: transfer portal, which is now. I don't how familiar guys
- 42:25Speaker 4: are with college football, but you can literally leave whenever
- 42:27Speaker 4: you want. Essentially, if that was established, I would have
- 42:30Speaker 4: sent my ass back to Arizona. And I heardfully, thankfully
- 42:35Speaker 4: it wasn't established yet. But now as I've gotten older,
- 42:37Speaker 4: I'm like, man, something about an Arizona sunset, the desert,
- 42:41Speaker 4: the climate, everything is it's it's beautiful. We were talking
- 42:43Speaker 4: about Cave Creek. It's like the only place in the
- 42:46Speaker 4: world where you'll find like an old horse, a truck
- 42:48Speaker 4: in a ferrari in the same parking lot, and you
- 42:50Speaker 4: just it's just such a unique, cool town. And so
- 42:53Speaker 4: there is that level of nostalgia for sure.
- 42:55Speaker 1: Yeah. And then you had bad you had some like
- 42:58Speaker 1: bad ish injuries.
- 43:00Speaker 4: Yeah, I did, uh, more so recently though mostly recently.
- 43:03Speaker 3: So.
- 43:04Speaker 4: I actually was extremely lucky, Like in college.
- 43:06Speaker 1: Were told me today about getting getting knocked out.
- 43:08Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, that was fun. That was your bell wronging
- 43:13Speaker 4: your bell rung.
- 43:13Speaker 1: I didn't know that that could happen. He was telling
- 43:15Speaker 1: me that Taylor was telling me he got hit in
- 43:17Speaker 1: the way and this is the thing that happens to
- 43:18Speaker 1: people where you come to in your emotional.
- 43:21Speaker 3: Emotional They just told him that to make him feel
- 43:23Speaker 3: better about.
- 43:28Speaker 4: Good emotions.
- 43:30Speaker 5: Hurry up and get off. Yeah, was saying that when
- 43:33Speaker 5: he said he's lucky at one point and please don't
- 43:37Speaker 5: let me give it this wrong. So jump in. You
- 43:40Speaker 5: were with the Titans for seven years, nine nine years
- 43:44Speaker 5: and at one point every year counts count Oh yeah, man,
- 43:50Speaker 5: you were like the most tenured person on the entire team.
- 43:53Speaker 4: Yeah, my last year, my last two years of the Titans,
- 43:56Speaker 4: I was I saw one hundred percent turnover. So I
- 43:58Speaker 4: was like the oldest guy in the room. They were
- 44:00Speaker 4: a guy that played more years in the league than
- 44:01Speaker 4: me in the room. But I was at the at
- 44:03Speaker 4: the Titans for the longest amount of time. And it
- 44:05Speaker 4: was a cool experience too because our first year we uh,
- 44:08Speaker 4: my first game, we played the Kansas City Chiefs in
- 44:11Speaker 4: in Kansas City and it was loud and it was
- 44:14Speaker 4: they have this thing during the national anthem to say
- 44:16Speaker 4: and the home of the and the whole the whole stadium,
- 44:18Speaker 4: Y knows.
- 44:19Speaker 1: Chiefs it's and like it startled me, startled me big time.
- 44:26Speaker 4: And uh we won too, like two games that year
- 44:29Speaker 4: and so my first and then the next year we
- 44:31Speaker 4: won three games and it was like just a we
- 44:32Speaker 4: were a horrible franchise and we won this big run
- 44:34Speaker 4: of going nine and seven a bunch, finally having like
- 44:37Speaker 4: a winning records. And then twenty nineteen to go to
- 44:39Speaker 4: the AFC Championship, played the Chiefs again in Kansas City
- 44:43Speaker 4: and lost. We were up by ten in the first quarter.
- 44:45Speaker 4: But there was it was just like it was cool
- 44:47Speaker 4: to be a part of something that was so abysmal
- 44:49Speaker 4: at one point and then helped like grow it into
- 44:51Speaker 4: something that at one point was an actual contender for
- 44:53Speaker 4: a Super Bowl. Not not anymore. That tough yer for
- 44:56Speaker 4: the Boys, but yeah, tough year for the Boys. Yeah,
- 44:59Speaker 4: but yeah, yeah, getting knocked out.
- 45:01Speaker 3: We played it.
- 45:02Speaker 4: We played the Dolphins in twenty.
- 45:03Speaker 3: Eight longest game in NFL history, in NFL history, it
- 45:06Speaker 3: was like seven or eight hours long because of all
- 45:09Speaker 3: there's a lot of storms. So yeah, right, like yeah, yeah,
- 45:14Speaker 3: that was on the team.
- 45:15Speaker 4: That was a year we met and uh, I just
- 45:17Speaker 4: signed this deal and I came out in a boss
- 45:20Speaker 4: hog outfit, like all white suit, white hat. I had
- 45:23Speaker 4: a taxidermy beaver with me and I kind of did
- 45:26Speaker 4: this thing like Daddy's here, kind.
- 45:27Speaker 3: Of biggest contract for an olignement in NFL history at
- 45:32Speaker 3: the time. Oh I.
- 45:34Speaker 2: Love.
- 45:36Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 45:37Speaker 4: So I made this like big, like you know, theatrical
- 45:40Speaker 4: thing about it, and and Mike Rable, the head coach,
- 45:43Speaker 4: pulls me the office. He goes, that was funny.
- 45:44Speaker 3: It was good.
- 45:45Speaker 4: But I'm just let you know, there's gonna be guys
- 45:46Speaker 4: that don't like that. And sure enough, dude, we throw
- 45:48Speaker 4: a pick.
- 45:49Speaker 1: There's guys that don't like ostentatious.
- 45:55Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 45:56Speaker 4: Yeah, So we played the Dolphins in my that's it
- 45:59Speaker 4: right there, ans And we play the Dolphins. We throw
- 46:02Speaker 4: a pick and it's like towards our sideline. I'm I
- 46:04Speaker 4: take pride. I used to take pride. After this, I
- 46:06Speaker 4: never took pride in it again. But like hawking down
- 46:07Speaker 4: trying to get a couple of stats, get a tackle,
- 46:10Speaker 4: like we talked about being patient, trying to get there,
- 46:12Speaker 4: and dude's coming down and I'm starting to run like this,
- 46:15Speaker 4: I'm looking and all of a sudden, boom lights her
- 46:16Speaker 4: out and there's actually I mean it's kind of funny,
- 46:19Speaker 4: but there's a hilarious video on YouTube of me like
- 46:21Speaker 4: dead bodied on the floor and.
- 46:24Speaker 3: Our teams like start it was a dirty hit.
- 46:26Speaker 4: So like our team and the Dolphins like start getting
- 46:28Speaker 4: in a scrum and I pop up because I like
- 46:31Speaker 4: go from being unconscious to very conscious, and I'm like looking,
- 46:34Speaker 4: I see everybody fighting, and I go to get in it,
- 46:37Speaker 4: and like people trainers are grabbing me, like Kevin Byer
- 46:39Speaker 4: or safety. I think there's a picture of you right
- 46:40Speaker 4: there too, grabbing me, like hey, no, no, you got knocked out,
- 46:43Speaker 4: you got knocked in. I was like, well, you know,
- 46:44Speaker 4: they just and I just start crying, like tears pouring
- 46:48Speaker 4: down my face and I'm like talking normal, and our
- 46:50Speaker 4: center Ben Jones like takes the towel and like puts
- 46:52Speaker 4: it over my head like he's embarrassed for me. Like listen, brother,
- 46:57Speaker 4: you need to get to the locker room as soon
- 46:58Speaker 4: as possible. But yeah, that was a that was a
- 47:00Speaker 4: bit of a deal, that that little knockout situation you're
- 47:03Speaker 4: seeing it.
- 47:03Speaker 1: I'm watching it right now.
- 47:05Speaker 3: I'm dude, there's a dude on the Miami sideline just
- 47:08Speaker 3: looking at the camera. Body bag.
- 47:12Speaker 4: Line coach and the Dolphins is like, give him a
- 47:14Speaker 4: fist bump. I was like Andre branch is his name.
- 47:17Speaker 4: He was a backup you you know.
- 47:22Speaker 5: So it was it was it a clip or it
- 47:24Speaker 5: was just.
- 47:27Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 47:28Speaker 4: The next year they actually made that play illegal, that
- 47:30Speaker 4: that type of hit illegal.
- 47:32Speaker 3: One of those ones where you know, Taylor's like pursuing
- 47:35Speaker 3: to go get the ball carrier and whoever is coming
- 47:37Speaker 3: to block him, they don't even see him. So you're
- 47:39Speaker 3: just like looking your chops like you'll about to tee
- 47:41Speaker 3: off on this, right?
- 47:44Speaker 1: How do they define how do they define when they
- 47:46Speaker 1: made it illegal? How do they define it?
- 47:47Speaker 4: With defensive player? So like, if you're not aware of
- 47:51Speaker 4: the situation, if I'm pursuing you and someone's coming from
- 47:55Speaker 4: this side, I would be defenseless from your hit. I
- 47:57Speaker 4: would have to be aware of your hit coming in.
- 47:59Speaker 1: I supposed to keep all that street.
- 48:01Speaker 3: So many it's been like a transition for a lot of.
- 48:03Speaker 5: Guys offensive tackles, big big target to tee off on too.
- 48:07Speaker 3: Yeah if you yeah, oh, if they're not looking, yeah,
- 48:10Speaker 3: you got to t off on them. You don't want
- 48:11Speaker 3: to because you're thinking you're about to get swallowed up
- 48:14Speaker 3: by this boy.
- 48:15Speaker 5: My good did you did you get some tackles over
- 48:22Speaker 5: your I think I had like four or five I
- 48:23Speaker 5: usually yeah, yeah, a good little stuff, check that step.
- 48:29Speaker 4: I think I had like four or five throughout my career.
- 48:31Speaker 5: All of a sudden, you were like, I can run
- 48:33Speaker 5: watch Oh yeah, say a little athletic out there.
- 48:37Speaker 3: Now. I you know, I don't want to continue to
- 48:39Speaker 3: hype the boy, but you gotta hype the boy when
- 48:41Speaker 3: the time is necessary. Did you do you have the
- 48:44Speaker 3: record for forty times at the combine.
- 48:45Speaker 4: Now top It was top ten when I did the
- 48:48Speaker 4: the comments. Some dude been like a four to six
- 48:50Speaker 4: one time.
- 48:50Speaker 3: Oh gotcha.
- 48:51Speaker 5: I had that four five and nobody tried to like
- 48:54Speaker 5: pull you out to tight end or something like.
- 48:56Speaker 4: No, I was ripping at three ten, Like when you're
- 48:59Speaker 4: of that side. Nice, that's when, Yeah, that's when you're
- 49:03Speaker 4: and you don't want to you don't want to.
- 49:04Speaker 3: Try to move about a smart position as the blind side.
- 49:12Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah you want to.
- 49:13Speaker 1: He's like, no, baby, I was sawing this guy the
- 49:14Speaker 1: other day that was three ten.
- 49:15Speaker 3: Yeah, I feel pretty good right now.
- 49:17Speaker 1: Yeah, he's And.
- 49:20Speaker 4: If you're if you're looking from like a from a
- 49:22Speaker 4: career stand where like a tackle, a left tackle specifically,
- 49:25Speaker 4: it's like a highly like a highly doubted, very high
- 49:27Speaker 4: paid position. It's a premium position because it's very low,
- 49:30Speaker 4: low supply and extremely high demand.
- 49:31Speaker 5: Well, you're gonna zip out and hit guys like this, yeah.
- 49:34Speaker 3: Right, yeah, when he goes second level. Yeah.
- 49:36Speaker 4: Well, we actually played each other in college too, you yeah, yeah,
- 49:39Speaker 4: we play each other feed What was it? What do
- 49:40Speaker 4: we doy twelve?
- 49:42Speaker 1: Did you know you played each other? Were you not?
- 49:44Speaker 3: At the time? Though, not until we may.
- 49:46Speaker 4: You see a white guy, a white linebacker with the
- 49:48Speaker 4: last name Compton. You're gonna remember that guy.
- 49:51Speaker 3: Remember that guy there was It was the first time
- 49:54Speaker 3: we played against each other. I think it was twenty fifteen,
- 49:57Speaker 3: maybe the league.
- 49:58Speaker 4: Yeah, but the first time we played your a year
- 50:00Speaker 4: two fourteen, Okay, so fourteen at the Redskins or at
- 50:04Speaker 4: the Commanders. Yeah, excuse me, we're at at Washington. But
- 50:08Speaker 4: we played each other in college once too, twice in
- 50:11Speaker 4: college twice in college you got one and I got
- 50:13Speaker 4: one one on one, and then you won one in.
- 50:15Speaker 3: The in the NFL. Yeah. But the first time we
- 50:18Speaker 3: saw each other, like Taylor saying, like you see another
- 50:19Speaker 3: white guy on the field, you're kind of like, hey,
- 50:21Speaker 3: we're kind of doing it.
- 50:22Speaker 4: We're beating the odds, right, we're beating the odds.
- 50:24Speaker 3: Like the first play happened, I remember like tapping him
- 50:26Speaker 3: on the helmet the first time we ever we were
- 50:30Speaker 3: we're doing it out here.
- 50:32Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 50:33Speaker 3: Yeah, but it.
- 50:33Speaker 4: Is, especially for linebacker off it's a line there's a
- 50:37Speaker 4: pluthor of white dudes out there, and I don't want
- 50:38Speaker 4: to turn this into a white That's not what this
- 50:40Speaker 4: show needs to be about. But there is very like
- 50:43Speaker 4: a lot of times, not a whole lot of white
- 50:45Speaker 4: guys on the defensive side of the ball. I think
- 50:47Speaker 4: there's a bunch of times you were on the field
- 50:48Speaker 4: only white.
- 50:49Speaker 3: Solo, white sold patrol. Yeah. It is.
- 50:55Speaker 4: Uh, it's an interesting world, man. But yeah, we we
- 50:58Speaker 4: met in twenty eighteen. Well, talk about your career.
- 51:01Speaker 3: I've been going about.
- 51:02Speaker 1: My Yeah, well, well he did you a great service.
- 51:05Speaker 1: I'll do you only highlights.
- 51:06Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, when he starts, I'll interject. Trust me, I'm
- 51:10Speaker 4: great at interrupting for that. I will definitely when I
- 51:12Speaker 4: when I found my moment, I'll be there.
- 51:15Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 51:15Speaker 3: So out of Missouri in my career, I thought I was.
- 51:18Speaker 1: Gonna be Missouri.
- 51:19Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 51:20Speaker 3: Yeah, small town bonterare Missouri. Shout out bon Ter.
- 51:23Speaker 9: Uh.
- 51:23Speaker 3: I thought I was going to be the next Walter
- 51:25Speaker 3: Payton as I was growing up and realized than everybody,
- 51:28Speaker 3: Yeah he has a running back. You know, you're playing
- 51:30Speaker 3: both ways and you want to be an offensive you
- 51:31Speaker 3: want to score touchdowns. But you learned very quickly that
- 51:33Speaker 3: that's not going to be your future. Uh. Got recruited,
- 51:36Speaker 3: went to Nebraska, played in Nebraska for five years, one undrafted,
- 51:40Speaker 3: was with Washington for five years, the Titans for two,
- 51:44Speaker 3: and the Raiders for two. But the Titans and Raiders,
- 51:46Speaker 3: I was like twenty eighteen. I was on the Titans
- 51:48Speaker 3: that year. Then I was a free agent, went out
- 51:50Speaker 3: to Oakland. Then I was a free agent back to
- 51:53Speaker 3: the Titans. Then I was a free agent and then
- 51:55Speaker 3: went with the Las Vegas Raiders late that year. And
- 51:58Speaker 3: then that's that's kind of been that's kind of been
- 52:00Speaker 3: my journey. More of a road dog, more of a
- 52:02Speaker 3: road dog.
- 52:02Speaker 5: Can you just explain the mindset of a free agent
- 52:07Speaker 5: versus a mindset of a what would you assigned player?
- 52:11Speaker 3: What what's the the mindset? Like? What do you mean? Like? Uh,
- 52:16Speaker 3: like if the contract is coming up or not.
- 52:20Speaker 5: It's there all one one year.
- 52:22Speaker 3: Yeah, when you're on your rookie deal, you have like
- 52:24Speaker 3: a three or four year deal, depending on where you
- 52:26Speaker 3: got drafted. Like being undrafted, I was on a three
- 52:27Speaker 3: year deal. If you're drafted, you play four years, and
- 52:30Speaker 3: if you're in a if you're a first rounder, there's
- 52:32Speaker 3: a fifth year option. So there's a lot of those
- 52:34Speaker 3: business dynamics that go into it. Uh, But fortunately I
- 52:37Speaker 3: got to play for Washington for five years. The first
- 52:40Speaker 3: year I was practice squad the whole year, and then
- 52:42Speaker 3: the second year, which is where my initial contract basically
- 52:45Speaker 3: kicked in. Like they kind of had me hostage from
- 52:47Speaker 3: the business standpoint for a couple of years, and I
- 52:52Speaker 3: mean I was kind of like cutting my teeth in
- 52:55Speaker 3: Washington in year two to where I was I established
- 52:59Speaker 3: myself going in year three and four for sure, or
- 53:01Speaker 3: the year three years three through five. So that mindset
- 53:06Speaker 3: was more of like, you know, you felt like you
- 53:08Speaker 3: were you know, you were part of the bigger picture.
- 53:10Speaker 3: You were looking on when you were going into the offseason,
- 53:12Speaker 3: You're like looking to build on the year you just had,
- 53:14Speaker 3: or which guys are we going to bring in who
- 53:16Speaker 3: potentially you might draft. I know for myself the position
- 53:20Speaker 3: I was in every draft. For me every year, you
- 53:23Speaker 3: didn't want a team to draft anybody in your spot
- 53:25Speaker 3: because you kind of just you know, the pecking order
- 53:28Speaker 3: that kind of happens in the politics of it all.
- 53:29Speaker 3: Like with Tennessee, I became a free agent signed to
- 53:33Speaker 3: Tennessee on kind of a low one year for two deal,
- 53:38Speaker 3: and it was kind of one of those situations where
- 53:39Speaker 3: it's kind of like a proven deal, So yeah, what
- 53:41Speaker 3: you want to play well in that year to get
- 53:43Speaker 3: like a two, three, four year deal, right, And that
- 53:46Speaker 3: year when I signed with Tennessee, the draft comes around.
- 53:49Speaker 3: They draft a linebacker in the first round. So you remember,
- 53:54Speaker 3: I remember sitting at the bar in Germantown in Nashville,
- 53:58Speaker 3: and I was just thinking, damn, like you just kind
- 54:00Speaker 3: of know what time it is, like that guy's gonna play.
- 54:03Speaker 3: So you know, you got to kind of be like fluid.
- 54:05Speaker 3: It's like a very fluid mentality, because you know there
- 54:08Speaker 3: are times like when I got done with Tennessee that
- 54:11Speaker 3: first year where when we started the podcast, my mindset
- 54:15Speaker 3: was I've put together six years and I'm basically just
- 54:17Speaker 3: going to bet on my resume because I now I
- 54:21Speaker 3: don't I've tasted it too much to where I don't
- 54:23Speaker 3: want to be a guy on a ninety man roster
- 54:24Speaker 3: and try to make the fifty three Like in my
- 54:27Speaker 3: brain like I'm a fifty three guy, So I'll just
- 54:29Speaker 3: bet on guys getting hurt and then getting called up
- 54:31Speaker 3: or signed in the middle of the year right before
- 54:33Speaker 3: the season starts, and kind of took that approach for
- 54:36Speaker 3: the rest of my career unless I was able to
- 54:38Speaker 3: establish myself again to get like a multi year deal,
- 54:41Speaker 3: which didn't happen, but I got to take that same approach.
- 54:44Speaker 3: So that's kind of like how it changes. Yeah, Like
- 54:46Speaker 3: if you're you know, on Taylor spot and he can
- 54:48Speaker 3: he can speak to this, but when you're in, when
- 54:50Speaker 3: you're in those spots where you're part of the future
- 54:52Speaker 3: and everything else, you might go back to the table
- 54:54Speaker 3: and start renegotiating a year maybe two in advance to
- 54:58Speaker 3: kind of lock in your future. Like there was a
- 55:00Speaker 3: guy who never wanted to go anywhere else, which is
- 55:03Speaker 3: you're not telling that to the organization because you're trying
- 55:05Speaker 3: to you're trying to play that game of leverage, but
- 55:08Speaker 3: ultimately you try and get yourself locked into that same
- 55:10Speaker 3: situation because you hate switching locations.
- 55:12Speaker 5: But is there the same level of comfort in your
- 55:16Speaker 5: position as a free agent as opposed to somebody who's
- 55:20Speaker 5: got this multi year contract. I can't imagine.
- 55:23Speaker 3: No, No, not at all.
- 55:25Speaker 4: Like there's like I feel like only the paranoid survive
- 55:27Speaker 4: in the NFL. You have to be paranoid at all times.
- 55:30Speaker 1: Yeah, someone else. We had another player on recently, Derek
- 55:33Speaker 1: Wolfe was on. Yeah, he had a couple of things
- 55:37Speaker 1: you talk about. One thing you talk about is just
- 55:39Speaker 1: that that sense of someone's coming for you, at someone
- 55:46Speaker 1: coming up that wants your job. You're always fighting, you
- 55:49Speaker 1: know what I mean. You never like just relaxed into it.
- 55:52Speaker 1: Oh yeah, yeah, because there's always some kid coming out
- 55:54Speaker 1: of college and watch your job.
- 55:56Speaker 4: There's different there's different level stead obviously, like in Will's position,
- 55:59Speaker 4: being an undrafted cat and working to get on the
- 56:02Speaker 4: roster this first couple of years and fighting through the
- 56:04Speaker 4: fringe essentially to become an established part of a franchise
- 56:07Speaker 4: is one thing. When you're drafted like I was drafted
- 56:10Speaker 4: in the first round, you have to mess up really
- 56:13Speaker 4: bad till I get essentially not have those three four years,
- 56:17Speaker 4: so you some guys will kind of take a back seat.
- 56:20Speaker 4: I'm good, I made some money all that. But if
- 56:23Speaker 4: you don't constantly think to yourself, hey, someone's going to
- 56:26Speaker 4: try to take something from you. There's some kid that's
- 56:28Speaker 4: a freshman in college right now that's going to get
- 56:30Speaker 4: drafted and try to take your job. Like there always
- 56:32Speaker 4: has to be some sort of like they're coming, they're
- 56:34Speaker 4: coming feeling like there's like some sort of paranoid And
- 56:37Speaker 4: it really is.
- 56:38Speaker 3: In your situation too, Like you know, when you care
- 56:40Speaker 3: about what you're doing and you want to play at
- 56:42Speaker 3: a really high level or perform any job at a
- 56:44Speaker 3: high level, like and you're a first rounder, like you
- 56:46Speaker 3: want to be able to hold the standard. I want
- 56:48Speaker 3: to be the guy that they think I am throughout
- 56:51Speaker 3: your career. So then when you do have LALs like
- 56:52Speaker 3: I know, that just goes on in your mind, like, man,
- 56:54Speaker 3: I go, I gotta play better. They thought they expected
- 56:56Speaker 3: me to be a starter this year. I don't feel
- 56:58Speaker 3: like I'm playing at starter level. Like all these different
- 57:00Speaker 3: parandormies are constantly here.
- 57:02Speaker 4: There's a big world for self doubt, a massive world
- 57:05Speaker 4: for self doubt and it's a very ruthless and cutthroat
- 57:08Speaker 4: business because you when you go to college, if you
- 57:11Speaker 4: if you're lucky enough to get offered to a school,
- 57:12Speaker 4: you're there for three to five years. If you can
- 57:15Speaker 4: leave early, you do, and sometimes your red shirt and
- 57:18Speaker 4: you do the whole thing. Will and I both red
- 57:19Speaker 4: shirt and played the four years after that. But when
- 57:22Speaker 4: you go to the NFL, it's like, if you're a
- 57:23Speaker 4: cat that's let's say fourth round to undrafted you are.
- 57:28Speaker 4: You don't have two, three four years to develop. It's
- 57:31Speaker 4: like even if you signed that three four year game, right,
- 57:34Speaker 4: So there's guys. I remember the first time cuts would happen,
- 57:37Speaker 4: and back in twenty fourteen, the way cuts were, there's
- 57:39Speaker 4: four preseason games and then the third preseason game they
- 57:42Speaker 4: would go from a ninety man roster to a seventy
- 57:44Speaker 4: five man roster. And then after the fourth preseason game,
- 57:46Speaker 4: you go seventy five to your fifty three, which is
- 57:49Speaker 4: your your team. And then you have about ten guys
- 57:51Speaker 4: on practice squad who aren't getting paid salary like the
- 57:53Speaker 4: salary you would get if you're in the NFL. But
- 57:55Speaker 4: you're you're there, you're practicing. You don't have to be
- 57:57Speaker 4: at the games that type of thing, and you'd be
- 57:58Speaker 4: around guys that are like kind of excited about the season,
- 58:01Speaker 4: how do you think we're gonna do? And then two
- 58:03Speaker 4: weeks later they're, you know, weeping bringing their playbook because
- 58:06Speaker 4: they know they're getting cut right then and there, and
- 58:07Speaker 4: you just it just you have to change your mindset
- 58:10Speaker 4: in such a hurry to know that, Okay, there's no
- 58:13Speaker 4: time to develop, like any weak point in your game
- 58:16Speaker 4: that will expose you, you better work on that craft immediately,
- 58:19Speaker 4: otherwise you could be set out.
- 58:21Speaker 3: The door in any moment. M and and with obviously
- 58:24Speaker 3: all sports, but with football too, like it is it's
- 58:26Speaker 3: such a performance based business. Like you're you're going to practice,
- 58:30Speaker 3: you're watching every rep of practice with in front of
- 58:33Speaker 3: the team meeting and position meetings. Then you got to
- 58:35Speaker 3: you know, refocus for the next day the highs and lows,
- 58:38Speaker 3: like you're just constantly being evaluated every day. So there's
- 58:41Speaker 3: never a there's never a level of like comfort even
- 58:44Speaker 3: if you are good, because you still want to play
- 58:47Speaker 3: at a very high level, like every guy who's in
- 58:49Speaker 3: a starting lineup ultimately like wants to be a super
- 58:52Speaker 3: Bowl champion. Or if they want to attain being a
- 58:55Speaker 3: pro bowler, Like they all want to be the best.
- 58:56Speaker 3: If you're a guy who's a backup, you're kind of
- 58:58Speaker 3: just waiting for opportunity to be a starter. If you're
- 59:01Speaker 3: kind of like third or four stringer, kind of on
- 59:03Speaker 3: that fringe, you're just you're trying to fight so you
- 59:06Speaker 3: can be part of that crew who gets to look
- 59:07Speaker 3: at each opponent you know, as like something to look
- 59:11Speaker 3: forward to, versus like your team is all of your opponents,
- 59:14Speaker 3: because you've got to like make the team. So there's
- 59:16Speaker 3: always like a different level. But it's like performance based
- 59:19Speaker 3: every day.
- 59:20Speaker 1: Like, so with the path you took, you ever do
- 59:22Speaker 1: you ever get money, like sorry, a chance to make
- 59:25Speaker 1: real money or is it is it real like you're
- 59:26Speaker 1: sort of living hand in mouth all the time.
- 59:28Speaker 3: Uh No, Yeah, I had opportunities. It was like so
- 59:31Speaker 3: practice squad, you know, if you get if you're playing
- 59:33Speaker 3: on practice squad. Like my practice squad salary my very
- 59:36Speaker 3: first year was one hundred and twelve thousand was the saldy. Okay, Yeah,
- 59:39Speaker 3: so you're making solid money, but compared to being active,
- 59:44Speaker 3: you're making my rookie salary. Say, I was playing that
- 59:47Speaker 3: very first year, it's like four hundred and fifty, and
- 59:49Speaker 3: then it goes up more after that. Your chance to
- 59:51Speaker 3: make the big money is in your second contract, your
- 59:54Speaker 3: third contract. I know for me, my biggest one I
- 59:56Speaker 3: had was that one year for two with Tennessee and
- 59:59Speaker 3: when I was like a restrict free agent. But the
- 1:00:01Speaker 3: year to year after that, I was like a one
- 1:00:03Speaker 3: year minimum guy. But the longer you're in the league,
- 1:00:05Speaker 3: the more that floor goes up. But if you're like,
- 1:00:08Speaker 3: you know, Taylor can speak to this, like when you're
- 1:00:10Speaker 3: you're trying to get that second contract, when they tell
- 1:00:12Speaker 3: guys like you got a lot of you know, X
- 1:00:14Speaker 3: y Z, Like Taylor's a cat to where hey, in
- 1:00:17Speaker 3: year four, when did when'd you sign your deal? You're
- 1:00:19Speaker 3: four year four, going going into five? Yeah, going into five.
- 1:00:21Speaker 3: Like Taylor he put you know, he took advantage of
- 1:00:23Speaker 3: all those first four years to put himself in a
- 1:00:25Speaker 3: position to make that lucrative deal. And that's where, guys,
- 1:00:29Speaker 3: where the guarantees happen, Like, you know, a five year
- 1:00:32Speaker 3: deal for X amount of millions of dollars and then
- 1:00:35Speaker 3: after that again in the NFL, you just basically take
- 1:00:37Speaker 3: your salary or your contract and cut it in half.
- 1:00:40Speaker 3: Like if you're a five year guy. The majority of
- 1:00:42Speaker 3: Vets who signed like a five six year deal like
- 1:00:44Speaker 3: think two or three, because once you're guaranteed money's up,
- 1:00:47Speaker 3: they're gonna you're back to having to earn it at
- 1:00:50Speaker 3: all times.
- 1:00:51Speaker 4: At all times. It's yeah, it's a bit of a
- 1:00:53Speaker 4: deal man, it really is.
- 1:00:56Speaker 3: Mm hm.
- 1:00:56Speaker 1: So tell how you tell how you then met?
- 1:01:00Speaker 4: Yes, so I kept the truck a little bit.
- 1:01:06Speaker 1: It's really cute because you guys friends, thought you'd be
- 1:01:08Speaker 1: best friends.
- 1:01:08Speaker 4: Yeah, so Will coming from the recue, coming from the Redskins.
- 1:01:12Speaker 4: I remember I was sitting in the cold tub and
- 1:01:14Speaker 4: just kind of you know, surfing the bird Twitter at
- 1:01:16Speaker 4: that at that point, and uh, I see this tweet
- 1:01:19Speaker 4: or it's an article. It's like Will Compton signs with
- 1:01:21Speaker 4: the Tennessee Titans, he will be best friends with Taylor
- 1:01:23Speaker 4: lay Blake.
- 1:01:26Speaker 3: Lawrence had the tweet, and then that tweet was using.
- 1:01:30Speaker 4: It was like getting your marriage arranged. I was like
- 1:01:32Speaker 4: kind of like, hell, yeah, dude, was my best friend gone?
- 1:01:36Speaker 4: And so Willy shows up and uh they were clearly
- 1:01:40Speaker 4: right immediately, like we established our friendship very quickly.
- 1:01:44Speaker 1: What was it that they were anticipating you're going to
- 1:01:46Speaker 1: bond over.
- 1:01:47Speaker 4: I just think we both like when you're in the media.
- 1:01:49Speaker 4: When you do media, some guys handle themselves saying as
- 1:01:53Speaker 4: little as possible. Some guys just stick with the game plan.
- 1:01:55Speaker 4: I was much more theatrical. Will is a wordsmith with
- 1:01:58Speaker 4: his thumbs, the way he was putting out.
- 1:02:01Speaker 1: Yeah, that review of the of the Gut beer exactly here.
- 1:02:05Speaker 1: He reviewed that dish, and I thought, I thought he
- 1:02:08Speaker 1: had studied up and made up a thing ahead of time, like.
- 1:02:12Speaker 5: He'd been sitting there the whole time being like this
- 1:02:14Speaker 5: is what I'm gonna say.
- 1:02:17Speaker 4: I'm gonna say premeditated. Bill confident is very premeditated the
- 1:02:21Speaker 4: way he handles himself. But for whatever reason, people are like,
- 1:02:23Speaker 4: these guys are gonna be They're gonna be boys, and uh,
- 1:02:26Speaker 4: I don't. The first time he met was probably in
- 1:02:29Speaker 4: the lunch hale.
- 1:02:30Speaker 3: Yeah, probably probably breakfast club because camping Aro like me
- 1:02:35Speaker 3: being a frasing coming in, you're kind of like leaning
- 1:02:37Speaker 3: to the other free agents. WY just get signed because
- 1:02:39Speaker 3: you're like the new guys, right, So we would sit
- 1:02:41Speaker 3: at breakfast and, you know, chop it up and have
- 1:02:43Speaker 3: fun and laugh and stuff and I remember one time, Yeah,
- 1:02:46Speaker 3: Taylor came over and like I said, I like, hey, boys,
- 1:02:47Speaker 3: what were we talking about? I'm trying to laugh, like,
- 1:02:51Speaker 3: and then it kind of like just grew from there.
- 1:02:52Speaker 3: I mean I stayed at this the Candlewood Sweets. It
- 1:02:56Speaker 3: was like a hotel right down from the facility payah, Yeah,
- 1:03:01Speaker 3: and that's where they was. That's where they put the
- 1:03:03Speaker 3: free agents, and you basically just prolong your stay until
- 1:03:06Speaker 3: you felt like you had an idea of if you
- 1:03:08Speaker 3: were going to be, you know, with the team for
- 1:03:09Speaker 3: a year, because you don't want to sign into a
- 1:03:11Speaker 3: year lease and thinking I might get cut, so.
- 1:03:15Speaker 1: You got to live with other dudes who are trying
- 1:03:16Speaker 1: to make it too.
- 1:03:17Speaker 3: No, well, the many you're outside of your rookie deal,
- 1:03:20Speaker 3: you don't get paired up with roommates anymore. But when
- 1:03:22Speaker 3: you're a rookie in those first couple of years, like you,
- 1:03:24Speaker 3: they would put you with guys in the hotel, like
- 1:03:26Speaker 3: when the team's go into the hotel.
- 1:03:27Speaker 1: Then it's just all competitions all the time.
- 1:03:29Speaker 3: Yeah, all the time.
- 1:03:30Speaker 5: It's gotta be some real hits and misses on the
- 1:03:32Speaker 5: roommates that you Yeah, I had.
- 1:03:34Speaker 3: Not to get too often. Age my very first roommate,
- 1:03:37Speaker 3: he had a he did a terrible job at missing
- 1:03:39Speaker 3: the rim at night going to the bathroom, and he
- 1:03:42Speaker 3: never cleaned it up, and it blew my mind, blew
- 1:03:45Speaker 3: my mind. He would shave and get stuff all over
- 1:03:48Speaker 3: the sink, and I'm just thinking, bro, we're sharing this.
- 1:03:50Speaker 1: You sound a little squeamish to me.
- 1:03:52Speaker 3: Yeah, you just go in and like, you know, you're
- 1:03:55Speaker 3: going in the middle of the night, you step in
- 1:03:56Speaker 3: some piss and you're just thinking, what are we doing? Brother, Like,
- 1:03:58Speaker 3: turn the light on, figure it out. He wasn't a kicker,
- 1:04:03Speaker 3: was no, he was an offensive lineman. I mean there's
- 1:04:06Speaker 3: some dirty animal dirty.
- 1:04:07Speaker 4: Yeah, traditionally gross individuals.
- 1:04:11Speaker 3: But yeah, and then we started bonding over you know,
- 1:04:14Speaker 3: as we circle to the podcasting world, we bonded over
- 1:04:17Speaker 3: a lot of podcasting Rogan uh Ben Greenfield, he's big
- 1:04:21Speaker 3: into like a lot of performance stuff, bio hacking, and
- 1:04:24Speaker 3: so with our you know what we were doing, we
- 1:04:26Speaker 3: we called each other account of bill of Buddies to
- 1:04:28Speaker 3: where we'd be doing the song of the Cold Tub,
- 1:04:30Speaker 3: like we'd be doing all this stuff with each other.
- 1:04:33Speaker 3: And then Taylor would always you know, he's somebody who
- 1:04:35Speaker 3: when he he loves, he loves hard. So he would
- 1:04:38Speaker 3: always want me to come over to his house, like
- 1:04:40Speaker 3: every day. He would be like He'd just open it
- 1:04:42Speaker 3: up for me every day. So he was kind of
- 1:04:44Speaker 3: like the he was kind of like the one like hey, yeah,
- 1:04:50Speaker 3: he would call me, be on speakerphone with him and
- 1:04:53Speaker 3: his wife, who yet to me, Like, I was just
- 1:04:55Speaker 3: telling Tailor about this tweet you had, like remember Malcolm Butler,
- 1:04:58Speaker 3: like he talked about I thought you was a kicker
- 1:05:00Speaker 3: because you seem like you got a construction worker body,
- 1:05:03Speaker 3: you know. But yeah, and then it was just just
- 1:05:09Speaker 3: ascended from there. Man. We were boys, can.
- 1:05:12Speaker 2: You guys do your handshake this whole.
- 1:05:13Speaker 3: Thing right there.
- 1:05:17Speaker 4: That's a small one and stuff like that.
- 1:05:20Speaker 3: And that was what April may. And then he's inviting
- 1:05:23Speaker 3: me to his wedding, which was in June, and I
- 1:05:25Speaker 3: felt very like, I'm not like the most committal. I'm like,
- 1:05:28Speaker 3: oh yeah, you know, and they're like, no, you're going.
- 1:05:30Speaker 3: You have to go. You have to go, like we
- 1:05:31Speaker 3: already did. We already got the spot for you.
- 1:05:34Speaker 4: You have to go rooms taking care of you have
- 1:05:35Speaker 4: to be to buy your flight.
- 1:05:37Speaker 1: We ordered, we ordered your chicken breast exactly.
- 1:05:40Speaker 5: Catering is this much per play?
- 1:05:43Speaker 3: Yeah? And then from there, man, we just we worked
- 1:05:45Speaker 3: out together in the summer at UH at the Vanderbilt University. UH.
- 1:05:49Speaker 3: That's where we trained together in the off season, and
- 1:05:51Speaker 3: then we just we kicked it off once the season
- 1:05:53Speaker 3: hit and we were just that was that's that's the homie.
- 1:05:57Speaker 5: That's awesome story. Well told.
- 1:06:00Speaker 2: Yeah, I got a question.
- 1:06:10Speaker 6: So you guys have both like switched teams and moved.
- 1:06:13Speaker 6: What's that like on like your wife's and girlfriends?
- 1:06:16Speaker 2: Like, is that tough?
- 1:06:18Speaker 6: Yeah, you know the time went op, especially if you
- 1:06:21Speaker 6: have kids too.
- 1:06:21Speaker 5: I'm sure that's yeah.
- 1:06:22Speaker 3: I mean my wife that I have now, we weren't
- 1:06:24Speaker 3: we were. We were just together when I went from
- 1:06:26Speaker 3: Washington to Tennessee. Then I talked to her into moving
- 1:06:29Speaker 3: to Tennessee and then as we I forget if we
- 1:06:32Speaker 3: were engaged when I went to Oakland. No, I don't
- 1:06:34Speaker 3: think it was, because that was the year I engaged.
- 1:06:35Speaker 3: I proposed to her. But yeah, when you're leaving, So
- 1:06:39Speaker 3: the Oakland situation happened, and that was like the last
- 1:06:42Speaker 3: that was middle of the year. I was with the
- 1:06:44Speaker 3: Saints for like a couple of coffee, like ten days
- 1:06:47Speaker 3: in the for the fourth preseason game, they called me
- 1:06:49Speaker 3: up and I was like, oh man, I'm about to
- 1:06:51Speaker 3: sign with the team right before the season starts. I
- 1:06:53Speaker 3: didn't have to do any training camp. I didn't have
- 1:06:54Speaker 3: to bang, so I didn't have to I didn't have
- 1:06:57Speaker 3: to be out in the heat. I didn't have to
- 1:06:59Speaker 3: do all that stuff on my man about to be
- 1:07:00Speaker 3: on the squad, like just from you know, from the
- 1:07:02Speaker 3: start of the season. I get hurt in the fourth
- 1:07:04Speaker 3: preseason game, get an injury, get cut, injury settlement, and
- 1:07:07Speaker 3: then I'm kind of like on the couch until middle
- 1:07:10Speaker 3: of the year, and then that's when Oakland called. There
- 1:07:12Speaker 3: was a big part of me that didn't want to
- 1:07:14Speaker 3: go at the time, and I think it's just because
- 1:07:15Speaker 3: I just didn't want to travel and I was just
- 1:07:17Speaker 3: kind of being a bitch. But my wife, you know,
- 1:07:21Speaker 3: she you know, she basically like, hey, you got to go.
- 1:07:23Speaker 3: You know, you have to go. It does suck, but ultimately,
- 1:07:26Speaker 3: you know, it's for a short period like two months
- 1:07:28Speaker 3: tops at that time, and so then you know, when
- 1:07:31Speaker 3: the season was over, she'd come out and visit. Then
- 1:07:32Speaker 3: I come back home and I never really had to
- 1:07:34Speaker 3: do it, like while we were married, while we were
- 1:07:36Speaker 3: with a kid. I almost did last year when I
- 1:07:38Speaker 3: signed with the Atlanta Falcons, which that would have been
- 1:07:41Speaker 3: weird beginning. I would only been gone for like a
- 1:07:43Speaker 3: month or two, So I never had to experience it
- 1:07:46Speaker 3: at the level that other guys have. Like we've had
- 1:07:48Speaker 3: teammates to where they have a house or a place
- 1:07:52Speaker 3: in the city, like say Nashville, and then their their
- 1:07:55Speaker 3: family stays back because they might have kids who are
- 1:07:57Speaker 3: already going to school and stuff, so they don't want
- 1:07:59Speaker 3: to take them out of school like some of the
- 1:08:00Speaker 3: older heads, and so they would just travel back and
- 1:08:03Speaker 3: forth whenever they could, or just host them out for
- 1:08:05Speaker 3: a game.
- 1:08:05Speaker 4: Yeah, when Will went to the Raiders that one time
- 1:08:07Speaker 4: for those couple of months we the Titans actually played
- 1:08:11Speaker 4: the Raiders in Oakland, it was like the second to
- 1:08:13Speaker 4: last game in Oakland.
- 1:08:15Speaker 3: In the Coliseum, and there was this kid there.
- 1:08:17Speaker 4: He's like, now, one of the best pass rushers in
- 1:08:19Speaker 4: all of the NFL's name is Max Crosby.
- 1:08:20Speaker 3: He went to Eastern Michigan. He's an absolute stud.
- 1:08:23Speaker 4: And he apparently like Will walked in and he's like, yoh,
- 1:08:25Speaker 4: the boy, which is like kind of like our call
- 1:08:27Speaker 4: thing for busting with the boys is like he was like,
- 1:08:29Speaker 4: watched the show.
- 1:08:30Speaker 3: He was like about it.
- 1:08:31Speaker 4: Well, we go to play the play the Raiders and
- 1:08:34Speaker 4: Will tells Max He's like, every sack you get on Taylor,
- 1:08:36Speaker 4: I'll give you five hundred dollars. Will was plotting my
- 1:08:40Speaker 4: demise before the game. The NFL is hard enough, then
- 1:08:42Speaker 4: you're putting like the financial incentive under it. Thank God
- 1:08:46Speaker 4: it didn't happen.
- 1:08:47Speaker 5: It didn't have that's amazing.
- 1:08:49Speaker 4: I was stressed out about that.
- 1:08:51Speaker 5: What because we we did throw out some some stats
- 1:08:55Speaker 5: there for Taylor. The sacks are the thing when you're linebacker,
- 1:09:01Speaker 5: the thing.
- 1:09:01Speaker 1: Yeah, did you ever get any buddy, oh brother, get anybody.
- 1:09:06Speaker 3: Something? If you want to pull it up, I'm sure
- 1:09:08Speaker 3: you'll find it. There's a there's a sack out there
- 1:09:11Speaker 3: that's flowing around that people like to reflect on once
- 1:09:13Speaker 3: a year. And when I say people, I mean myself.
- 1:09:16Speaker 3: But yeah, I had one. I had one sack to
- 1:09:18Speaker 3: my name, one sack. Sam Bradford dabbed on him as well.
- 1:09:24Speaker 3: It was it was. It was one of the highs
- 1:09:26Speaker 3: of my career for sure. And then you know, I
- 1:09:28Speaker 3: don't want to get to three interceptions. How many tackles. Uh,
- 1:09:34Speaker 3: it's in the three hundreds. Oh wow the tackles.
- 1:09:38Speaker 5: Were you playing outside?
- 1:09:39Speaker 7: No?
- 1:09:40Speaker 2: I was?
- 1:09:40Speaker 3: I was inside off Okay, So I was never like
- 1:09:42Speaker 3: a yeah, yeah, you see the short arms, like I'm
- 1:09:46Speaker 3: no pass pass rush expert. Uh. Taylor blocked me a
- 1:09:51Speaker 3: couple of times in practice, which really pissed me off
- 1:09:53Speaker 3: because they were walkthroughs.
- 1:09:55Speaker 5: But it never never never give out here.
- 1:09:59Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, never gifted in the pass rush Candy.
- 1:10:01Speaker 4: Yeah, because Will would be he's an off the ball
- 1:10:03Speaker 4: linebacker inside the box, and he's got the green dogs
- 1:10:05Speaker 4: from the neck.
- 1:10:06Speaker 3: We're playing from the He's instinctive.
- 1:10:08Speaker 4: Here we go, compliments Will, Is it extremely instinctive able
- 1:10:11Speaker 4: to see formations of offenses and know essentially where the
- 1:10:14Speaker 4: ball is going to go, if it's going to be
- 1:10:15Speaker 4: a run or a pass. Like the man is a
- 1:10:16Speaker 4: student of the game. But when he was with the Titans,
- 1:10:19Speaker 4: there were a few situations where they would it would
- 1:10:22Speaker 4: be a call that would send them into a barefront,
- 1:10:24Speaker 4: and a barefront is like end tackle knows tackle end
- 1:10:27Speaker 4: and so it's like five down linemen, but you're taking
- 1:10:30Speaker 4: a Mike linebacker and you're putting at the end spot
- 1:10:33Speaker 4: and they put Will on me and it was a
- 1:10:34Speaker 4: run play and it's my boy. So I kind of
- 1:10:37Speaker 4: wanted to give him a little bit of the give
- 1:10:38Speaker 4: a little bit of business, let him know what d
- 1:10:40Speaker 4: he was working with a little bit.
- 1:10:41Speaker 3: It was a jog through. It was a job.
- 1:10:43Speaker 4: So I took him to the sideline.
- 1:10:45Speaker 3: He's like, what are we doing.
- 1:10:49Speaker 7: That?
- 1:10:49Speaker 5: Yeah, but I got to finish through.
- 1:10:51Speaker 3: I meant it.
- 1:10:52Speaker 4: There's a funny were all the time. We were in
- 1:10:55Speaker 4: Arizona one time where we're like we're, you know, banged
- 1:10:58Speaker 4: up a little bit and we're we laid through in
- 1:10:59Speaker 4: the YouTube and throwing like the twenty twelve Michigan versus
- 1:11:02Speaker 4: Nebraska game. It was in in Nebraska, and we were
- 1:11:05Speaker 4: watching a whole bunch of like we were just watching
- 1:11:06Speaker 4: the game like reminiscent on all this is what this
- 1:11:08Speaker 4: call is Like just a couple of guys, a couple
- 1:11:10Speaker 4: of has beens, really enjoying looking at their old craft.
- 1:11:13Speaker 4: And there was one player like Michigan was getting dusted
- 1:11:15Speaker 4: and I got a hold of Wheel on one play.
- 1:11:17Speaker 4: It took him to the sideline. Will threw a punch
- 1:11:19Speaker 4: at me in the game. Now it was there was
- 1:11:22Speaker 4: a close.
- 1:11:25Speaker 3: And the Taylor Taylor looked at I was crying like
- 1:11:30Speaker 3: a little bitch.
- 1:11:32Speaker 5: We awesome.
- 1:11:34Speaker 1: Yeah, our quarterback got hurt, but so we uh we
- 1:11:37Speaker 1: duck on it today and shot yesterday. Talk about your
- 1:11:41Speaker 1: pre in the past. What kind of fire arms experience
- 1:11:45Speaker 1: do you guys have.
- 1:11:46Speaker 3: I mean, I go on an annual hunting trip with
- 1:11:49Speaker 3: the boys. We have a little Texas group that goes
- 1:11:51Speaker 3: down in South Texas once a year, but I wouldn't
- 1:11:53Speaker 3: consider it a whole lot hunting white tail and nil
- 1:11:56Speaker 3: guy and then some hogs. We got in the hog
- 1:11:58Speaker 3: hut a couple of times. But that's a lot of fun.
- 1:12:01Speaker 3: But growing up I didn't do a whole lot like
- 1:12:03Speaker 3: my dad. Unfortunately massacred a white tail in front of
- 1:12:05Speaker 3: me when I was a young pup and I never
- 1:12:08Speaker 3: went back in the woods after that.
- 1:12:10Speaker 1: It turned you off, Yeah, it turned me off.
- 1:12:11Speaker 3: And because like deer season was always like in football season,
- 1:12:14Speaker 3: and I just never had that itch to like go hunt,
- 1:12:17Speaker 3: and you know he didn't have had that.
- 1:12:22Speaker 5: There was like it was like a reload follow up
- 1:12:26Speaker 5: shot situation.
- 1:12:28Speaker 3: Oh yeah, probably five six shots. It was my dad
- 1:12:30Speaker 3: was not happy about it, Like I mean, it wasn't
- 1:12:32Speaker 3: you know. He hated it. He hated it. He hated
- 1:12:34Speaker 3: it for me, He hated it for everybody but my dad,
- 1:12:37Speaker 3: my old man. We didn't have like a tree center on,
- 1:12:39Speaker 3: so we just be sitting against a tree and I'm
- 1:12:41Speaker 3: like falling asleep at the time. So I'm thinking, like, man,
- 1:12:43Speaker 3: I don't really care to hunt a whole lot right now.
- 1:12:45Speaker 3: Uh So I just never really got into hunting. But
- 1:12:48Speaker 3: like I've been, you know, clay shooting a few times,
- 1:12:51Speaker 3: so not a whole lot, but I guess enough to
- 1:12:53Speaker 3: work around the barrel a little bit.
- 1:12:55Speaker 4: Yeah, for me, it was I've been clay shooting probably
- 1:12:58Speaker 4: a handful of times. My dad used to take me
- 1:12:59Speaker 4: a little bit when I was like eleven or twelve,
- 1:13:01Speaker 4: but really never been hunting. I've been in two different
- 1:13:05Speaker 4: hunting situations. One I was down in Baton Rouge, Louisiana
- 1:13:08Speaker 4: with one of my buddies and his grandpa had like
- 1:13:10Speaker 4: a tree stand in the backyard and we kind of
- 1:13:11Speaker 4: just sat there for two three hours, and I just thought,
- 1:13:14Speaker 4: what are we doing out here?
- 1:13:15Speaker 1: Man? Is that what you said?
- 1:13:17Speaker 2: He saw?
- 1:13:18Speaker 9: Yeah?
- 1:13:18Speaker 3: So I saw.
- 1:13:19Speaker 4: I literally I remember sitting there, I saw a butter
- 1:13:21Speaker 4: butterfly and a bunny rabbit. I literally just followed the
- 1:13:23Speaker 4: butter butterfly for a while, got buller went down patience. Yeah, yeah,
- 1:13:29Speaker 4: maybe I just take out this bunny with this thirty
- 1:13:31Speaker 4: odd six real quick.
- 1:13:32Speaker 3: But I didn't.
- 1:13:33Speaker 1: I didn't, you didn't know.
- 1:13:34Speaker 4: And then uh that was that was it. And then
- 1:13:36Speaker 4: a couple of years ago, I had a buddy in Nashville,
- 1:13:38Speaker 4: Tennessee for Ford Tomlin. He took me his family's got
- 1:13:41Speaker 4: a farm and we went turkey hunting. It was like
- 1:13:43Speaker 4: the last week of turkey season. Did not see one turkey?
- 1:13:47Speaker 4: Hear any Yeah, I heard a couple that sounds like,
- 1:13:51Speaker 4: what's that?
- 1:13:52Speaker 1: What that sounds like?
- 1:13:53Speaker 4: Go ahead, next, what you got for us?
- 1:13:57Speaker 1: Anybody that tells a turkey story, you can tell if
- 1:13:59Speaker 1: he's a turkey hunter. When he gets to the gobble part,
- 1:14:02Speaker 1: he doesn't do a guy.
- 1:14:03Speaker 3: He goes, you got a good turkey, You got a
- 1:14:07Speaker 3: good turkey. So it is so I didn't see nothing,
- 1:14:11Speaker 3: and so.
- 1:14:13Speaker 4: Yeah, but so I've shot a gun a couple of times,
- 1:14:14Speaker 4: but literally today was the first like organized hunt that
- 1:14:18Speaker 4: was successful for me. And it was I told you
- 1:14:20Speaker 4: while we were sitting in the blank. I will go back,
- 1:14:22Speaker 4: I will I will come back here, I will go
- 1:14:24Speaker 4: anywhere and do it again.
- 1:14:25Speaker 3: That was awesome.
- 1:14:26Speaker 1: You guys were a really quick study shooting. I know
- 1:14:28Speaker 1: you've been done some shooting before, so whatever. You didn't
- 1:14:31Speaker 1: come in being like I know all about this, get
- 1:14:33Speaker 1: out of my way. Yeah, but Cal and I were
- 1:14:36Speaker 1: talking about it, and we were talking about how the
- 1:14:39Speaker 1: hunting with you seeing you shoot, well, that was so fun.
- 1:14:42Speaker 1: It was like you spent your whole lifetime getting coached
- 1:14:47Speaker 1: and absorbing information.
- 1:14:49Speaker 5: And then of trying to apply that information right.
- 1:14:52Speaker 1: Hand eye coordination, situational awareness. Yeah, I don't know, like
- 1:14:58Speaker 1: like you want to be successful, competitiveness drive. Yeah, it
- 1:15:03Speaker 1: makes you realize that, I'll say to you, spend your
- 1:15:05Speaker 1: whole life trying to get good at something, and then
- 1:15:07Speaker 1: you see someone get like be proficient at some aspect
- 1:15:10Speaker 1: of it really quickly and you sort of wishing that
- 1:15:13Speaker 1: they can't figure it out. Well, it just goes to
- 1:15:18Speaker 1: show how constructive all these years, these guys can't hit
- 1:15:21Speaker 1: a duck save their lives, And you're like, oh, ship,
- 1:15:23Speaker 1: they hit ducks just like all my friends do. Duck
- 1:15:27Speaker 1: hunts is they're not Steve.
- 1:15:29Speaker 3: Steve, Now you missed a few clays yesterday.
- 1:15:33Speaker 4: I would say that the clay shooting part was more
- 1:15:36Speaker 4: nerve wracking than the first duck coming out, Yes, because
- 1:15:38Speaker 4: it was all of us really meeting for the first
- 1:15:40Speaker 4: time and you're like, Jimmy, we're gonna try to get
- 1:15:45Speaker 4: a couple and we'll be in a brave boy like
- 1:15:47Speaker 4: I'll go first, and he misses it, I'm like, miss everything.
- 1:15:52Speaker 6: I think part about duck hunting too, is like you're
- 1:15:54Speaker 6: so in the moment and like you just kind of
- 1:15:57Speaker 6: black out and your instincts take over. Yes, Like that's
- 1:15:59Speaker 6: what happens to me a lot, And it's just like
- 1:16:02Speaker 6: the minute you start to think about it is when
- 1:16:04Speaker 6: you start to miss.
- 1:16:05Speaker 1: I feel like I shoot so much better when it's
- 1:16:09Speaker 1: just like a fashion Some point out that a duck
- 1:16:11Speaker 1: is about six times bigger in the clay pitch.
- 1:16:13Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:16:13Speaker 1: Yeah, but I shoot so much better when I'm not
- 1:16:16Speaker 1: standing there being like okay, I'm gonna say ready, and
- 1:16:19Speaker 1: then when I say ready, this is what I'm gonna
- 1:16:21Speaker 1: do and I'm not gonna do that. It's just better
- 1:16:23Speaker 1: when you just do it.
- 1:16:24Speaker 6: Yeah, it's like something just comes in and you're like,
- 1:16:26Speaker 6: oh boom.
- 1:16:26Speaker 1: We used to put people through something just excruciating and
- 1:16:29Speaker 1: still do as we did yesterday, which is like in filming,
- 1:16:34Speaker 1: filming mediater episodes, you know, oftimes you'll have someone come
- 1:16:37Speaker 1: in and they flew in with their rifle. So then
- 1:16:40Speaker 1: it's like when we gotta go test your rifle. We
- 1:16:41Speaker 1: got to check your rifle, make sure it didn't get this,
- 1:16:43Speaker 1: didn't get knocked off of zero. So then here's this person,
- 1:16:47Speaker 1: you know, they just got off a plane. There's like
- 1:16:49Speaker 1: eight people staring at him. You put the target out there.
- 1:16:53Speaker 5: And you always have someplace to be. That's the most
- 1:16:56Speaker 5: fun part. It's always on a schedule where it's like, you.
- 1:16:58Speaker 1: Know, the we gotta get well, ain't gonna watch. It's
- 1:17:07Speaker 1: gonna be the only person is gonna be more awkward
- 1:17:09Speaker 1: for if you shoot poorly, is it's gonna feel awkward
- 1:17:13Speaker 1: for me. So I'm gonna resent you for that reason.
- 1:17:15Speaker 1: It's gonna look very awkward for you.
- 1:17:18Speaker 4: And we started shooting yesterday.
- 1:17:20Speaker 3: Just get real quiet.
- 1:17:21Speaker 4: Everyone's standing there and it's like you guys are kind
- 1:17:24Speaker 4: of pretend you didn't see it.
- 1:17:26Speaker 3: You guys are like, yeah, these are like the uh,
- 1:17:30Speaker 3: the brand in the outdoor game. And you know, I
- 1:17:34Speaker 3: won't speak for you, but I know coming out here,
- 1:17:36Speaker 3: I didn't necessarily have my arms all the way around that.
- 1:17:38Speaker 3: And then the buzz of us coming out here for
- 1:17:40Speaker 3: my buddies are people that knew we were coming. It
- 1:17:42Speaker 3: almost put a little bit more. It put more pressure
- 1:17:45Speaker 3: on us, or more pressure on me. Like when we
- 1:17:47Speaker 3: put out a photo and like everyone's like, oh my god,
- 1:17:50Speaker 3: blah blah blah. You're just thinking these guys, yeah, I
- 1:17:52Speaker 3: knew they were good. I didn't know. It was like
- 1:17:54Speaker 3: the following was like this. So everything we're out there doing,
- 1:17:57Speaker 3: I'm just thinking, like, man, I hope I'm good for
- 1:17:59Speaker 3: the media guy.
- 1:18:02Speaker 1: Like I hope I can own my own. Like, hope
- 1:18:04Speaker 1: I don't shoot one of these guys.
- 1:18:08Speaker 4: You're talking about guys getting dude's being getting shot and
- 1:18:10Speaker 4: getting peppered, And I'm thinking, oh my god, yea wild, we're.
- 1:18:14Speaker 1: Gonna sit ya. We could have sent y' out for
- 1:18:16Speaker 1: pepper and all right, it's out there, you know, just shoot.
- 1:18:25Speaker 1: So what what how did you feel about the duck hunting?
- 1:18:28Speaker 1: Give me some of your impressions from duck hunting uh,
- 1:18:31Speaker 1: the actual act of duck hunting, right.
- 1:18:33Speaker 3: Not just I loved it. I thought it was awesome,
- 1:18:36Speaker 3: Like again that annual home we do it kind of
- 1:18:38Speaker 3: like when you're out there before the sun, the sun
- 1:18:40Speaker 3: comes up, you see the critters coming out, you kind
- 1:18:42Speaker 3: of just see like the nature and everything else. You
- 1:18:43Speaker 3: kind of like understand, uh, why everybody is so into
- 1:18:47Speaker 3: And it's one of those things where I still haven't
- 1:18:48Speaker 3: went from zero to one by buying myself a rifle
- 1:18:50Speaker 3: or anything like that yet, but it's one of those
- 1:18:52Speaker 3: things you leave and you're like, man, I gotta like die,
- 1:18:54Speaker 3: I gotta get it into the sport because I have
- 1:18:56Speaker 3: buddies that travel all over the country, like you know,
- 1:18:59Speaker 3: all the spots, spots in Arizona, Colorado, Utah, everywhere, and
- 1:19:03Speaker 3: it just seems like a lot of fun. So coming
- 1:19:05Speaker 3: out here like getting to experience duck hunting like I've
- 1:19:07Speaker 3: always heard that duck hunting is like all time and
- 1:19:09Speaker 3: so getting to do it at the level we got
- 1:19:11Speaker 3: to do it on the grounds, we got to do
- 1:19:14Speaker 3: it on it was just like it happening in real
- 1:19:17Speaker 3: time and we were knocking them down. It was just
- 1:19:19Speaker 3: it was so much fun. And again like getting to
- 1:19:21Speaker 3: do with you guys, like being like, Okay, you know
- 1:19:24Speaker 3: you want to you want to impress the squad, you
- 1:19:26Speaker 3: want to impress the boys.
- 1:19:27Speaker 1: You impressed me.
- 1:19:28Speaker 2: I'll tell you that.
- 1:19:30Speaker 4: When one wed go down, and we'd all be Yeah,
- 1:19:35Speaker 4: it was unique because like when we're talking about the
- 1:19:37Speaker 4: hunt and you're saying it's spoiled guy duck hunting because
- 1:19:39Speaker 4: of the blind and how it's set up and the
- 1:19:41Speaker 4: way you guys are explaining it. In my mind, I'm
- 1:19:44Speaker 4: essentially painting the picture of what it's all going to
- 1:19:46Speaker 4: be like, and then you show up and it's completely different.
- 1:19:49Speaker 4: So really, when I first get there, I'm like really
- 1:19:51Speaker 4: just trying to just be aware of all the stuff
- 1:19:53Speaker 4: going on. You hand me the the decoys and I
- 1:19:56Speaker 4: go set those up over there, and I'm thinking, oh
- 1:19:58Speaker 4: my god, I don't this is not like do I
- 1:20:01Speaker 4: just pull a string here?
- 1:20:02Speaker 2: Do I put these on?
- 1:20:04Speaker 4: I pulled the maxsime, Hey, so how do I thought
- 1:20:06Speaker 4: these little.
- 1:20:08Speaker 1: Decoy?
- 1:20:10Speaker 3: And I do I have to have a confession. I'm
- 1:20:11Speaker 3: the one who singled out and pulled out the duck
- 1:20:13Speaker 3: and I was like, hey, do I just throw this
- 1:20:14Speaker 3: on the water, Like yeah, get off the thing, and
- 1:20:16Speaker 3: I'm just thinking, I just step back.
- 1:20:21Speaker 2: So it comes over to me and hands me a
- 1:20:25Speaker 2: duck with out a weight on it, and I'm.
- 1:20:27Speaker 6: Like, sometimes this is sometimes it's like falls off. And
- 1:20:33Speaker 6: I look at it and the clips like fully unclipped
- 1:20:36Speaker 6: from the weight taking through the loop out and like
- 1:20:39Speaker 6: the string with the weight on it. Karen Beener and
- 1:20:43Speaker 6: he asked me, He goes, do I just set this
- 1:20:45Speaker 6: out there?
- 1:20:46Speaker 2: And I looked at it and I'm like, shoot, there's
- 1:20:48Speaker 2: no weight on it.
- 1:20:49Speaker 3: He goes back and I didn't say a word. I
- 1:20:51Speaker 3: got real quiet on the water. We're gonna go from
- 1:20:55Speaker 3: here to here, and I'm like all right, and I found.
- 1:20:56Speaker 6: The uh string with the weight on it, and I
- 1:20:59Speaker 6: was like, okay.
- 1:21:01Speaker 1: I I just didn't want to say yeah.
- 1:21:06Speaker 4: The wild thing is it's like you're so focused on
- 1:21:08Speaker 4: your dog calve the whole time. You're so fire off
- 1:21:10Speaker 4: the steve. You're just even when we had to do
- 1:21:12Speaker 4: the beaver trapping after that was like impromptu. You're just
- 1:21:15Speaker 4: a man on a mission, so all right, go do this.
- 1:21:18Speaker 4: And then you're trudging through the water and all that,
- 1:21:19Speaker 4: and I have to like assume how to throw it
- 1:21:21Speaker 4: out pull Max aside throwing and everything out there.
- 1:21:23Speaker 3: He said, the railroad thing like something weapons like, no, no,
- 1:21:29Speaker 3: that's not it.
- 1:21:29Speaker 4: We had to go put a trap out for Mark
- 1:21:32Speaker 4: and I literally it was like kids with their dad
- 1:21:36Speaker 4: like me, Will and JP. He's like, all right, we
- 1:21:38Speaker 4: pulled this through the cemetery and you're just you're literally
- 1:21:42Speaker 4: run jumps over in front of us.
- 1:21:44Speaker 3: Like you're just working.
- 1:21:46Speaker 4: He goes and jumps of fence and looks back at
- 1:21:47Speaker 4: the boys like what the flors was the jump this fence?
- 1:21:50Speaker 4: I hop at my kname like, oh my god. He's
- 1:21:52Speaker 4: like down the helmet, Hey, do we need to come
- 1:21:54Speaker 4: with you? He stayed there for a second.
- 1:21:56Speaker 3: I'll be right back.
- 1:21:57Speaker 4: So like then like old fat guy body over the
- 1:22:00Speaker 4: beans and we're kind of just watching you just move
- 1:22:02Speaker 4: and he's like looking around picking stuff up.
- 1:22:04Speaker 1: That's not it.
- 1:22:06Speaker 9: We did the truck and he's like yeah, oh dude,
- 1:22:11Speaker 9: he's like looking at it, grabbed his.
- 1:22:18Speaker 4: Taste like this is a man out here. And we
- 1:22:22Speaker 4: get to We end up getting back in the truck
- 1:22:24Speaker 4: and going down the hill and uh, Steve's like looking around.
- 1:22:28Speaker 3: He's like, God, where is it. I'm an idiot?
- 1:22:31Speaker 4: And he starts calling people, I need you to bring X,
- 1:22:33Speaker 4: Y and Z the thing we ended up using with
- 1:22:34Speaker 4: the beaber, Yeah, the castor lure. And he goes, Taylor,
- 1:22:38Speaker 4: you do in the back right corner there's a there's
- 1:22:39Speaker 4: a steel blah blah blah blah railroad railroad tie plate.
- 1:22:43Speaker 4: And I'm like, yeah, I got you, brother, And I started.
- 1:22:45Speaker 3: Looking to him like what the and I just giggling.
- 1:22:48Speaker 4: I pull out like there was like a shovel and
- 1:22:54Speaker 4: he's like, no, it's flat, and I'm like, we'll get
- 1:22:57Speaker 4: over here.
- 1:22:58Speaker 3: And that's what makes it so funny.
- 1:23:01Speaker 1: Just keep going when you were kids that you crush
- 1:23:02Speaker 1: pennies on the railroad tracks and notice how they hold
- 1:23:04Speaker 1: them all together.
- 1:23:05Speaker 4: No railroad tracks and cave tree.
- 1:23:07Speaker 3: Then he's down, he's down in the water and he's like, hey,
- 1:23:09Speaker 3: when you guys got a pocket knife? And I was like, oh,
- 1:23:11Speaker 3: I left it at home.
- 1:23:14Speaker 1: In the hotel.
- 1:23:16Speaker 3: So I was like one day and he's like, uh,
- 1:23:19Speaker 3: you grab something out of there and cut off like
- 1:23:22Speaker 3: cut off the willows or cut off the Wilson. You're
- 1:23:24Speaker 3: gonna have tell me.
- 1:23:24Speaker 4: What willow will sticking these flyers.
- 1:23:28Speaker 3: He goes to reach over and cut out what he
- 1:23:30Speaker 3: was saying, because there's just like.
- 1:23:31Speaker 4: There's just like a protective fence around these trees that
- 1:23:34Speaker 4: Mark is trying.
- 1:23:35Speaker 1: To Marks trying to re establish the gentleman that his
- 1:23:39Speaker 1: place is trying to get willows re established, willows along
- 1:23:44Speaker 1: as riparian areas, which, as I was explaining to you guys,
- 1:23:46Speaker 1: just decades and decades of cattle grazing and other stuff
- 1:23:49Speaker 1: eliminated all the willows. So he's trying to get the
- 1:23:51Speaker 1: willows going and he fences them in. But every time
- 1:23:56Speaker 1: he puts them in there and puts the fence around him,
- 1:23:57Speaker 1: somehow or no, the beavers still get him. He's trying
- 1:24:00Speaker 1: to hold the beavers back long enough to get his
- 1:24:03Speaker 1: willows re established.
- 1:24:04Speaker 3: And you're on these branches and I end up He's
- 1:24:06Speaker 3: like reach over and cut off a couple branches. I'm
- 1:24:08Speaker 3: just looking at this fence. I'm like, I can't get
- 1:24:10Speaker 3: over this fence. So I'm thinking maybe he just wants
- 1:24:12Speaker 3: me to press up against the fence and cut I'm
- 1:24:15Speaker 3: cutting some like dead flowers, like yeah, get poked in
- 1:24:21Speaker 3: my damn. And he's like, hey, that's that's that's go
- 1:24:25Speaker 3: over the tree in front of the truck and start
- 1:24:27Speaker 3: like clipping those and I go over with JP. I'm like, man,
- 1:24:29Speaker 3: I don't know what. I don't know what he's talking about.
- 1:24:31Speaker 3: I just start cutting these branches. He's like, he's like,
- 1:24:35Speaker 3: he's alive or dead? And I'm just thinking, yeah, I
- 1:24:36Speaker 3: don't know. He's like, is they're green in them? He
- 1:24:38Speaker 3: got He's like, oh no, these are dead. He's like,
- 1:24:40Speaker 3: we got to go get some ones that have some
- 1:24:41Speaker 3: green and them. Go over to that red tree, go
- 1:24:43Speaker 3: over to those red branches and get me some branches
- 1:24:45Speaker 3: because he's trying to set this trap. But we were
- 1:24:47Speaker 3: all in. We had the full meat eatior experience.
- 1:24:50Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 1:24:52Speaker 4: But going back to the duck hunt, which is where
- 1:24:55Speaker 4: this question originated, it was very cool to see like
- 1:24:59Speaker 4: one of the the way your dog was operating. I thought,
- 1:25:01Speaker 4: I thought that I get a real kick out of that.
- 1:25:03Speaker 4: I don't have a temperament for dogs, but the ones
- 1:25:05Speaker 4: that are real good I love.
- 1:25:06Speaker 3: Man.
- 1:25:06Speaker 4: Yeah, and then the first one coming in, you start
- 1:25:08Speaker 4: to feel start to feel like nervous and everything, and
- 1:25:12Speaker 4: you know steve'son there all right, this one's coming in.
- 1:25:14Speaker 3: All right.
- 1:25:14Speaker 4: When I say go you guys do it, And I
- 1:25:16Speaker 4: think takes a hard right turn and goes get it,
- 1:25:18Speaker 4: and we both get up and pump hit it, and
- 1:25:20Speaker 4: he's like, all right, well that duck is destroyed and
- 1:25:23Speaker 4: we're gonna have to We're gonna have to go back
- 1:25:25Speaker 4: and forth.
- 1:25:25Speaker 3: That was like a to me.
- 1:25:26Speaker 4: I was like, oh, that's a good little feeling, you know.
- 1:25:28Speaker 4: And then you have to call names. And then when
- 1:25:30Speaker 4: you unloaded your gun, there was a moment from me.
- 1:25:32Speaker 4: I was like, oh man, we're really shooting well out here, right.
- 1:25:35Speaker 5: That's great. Yeah, you were kind of leveling up throughout
- 1:25:38Speaker 5: the day, but I think.
- 1:25:39Speaker 4: The shot of the day was that duck coming overhead
- 1:25:42Speaker 4: and will with the swing swing because yesterday you were
- 1:25:45Speaker 4: talking about the clay. If you can get one of
- 1:25:47Speaker 4: those like that and we'll pop that thing up, no problem,
- 1:25:49Speaker 4: and took it.
- 1:25:51Speaker 1: You know, you're shooting Clayer leaving from your feet, Yeah,
- 1:25:55Speaker 1: flying out And I said, be more realistic. If the
- 1:25:57Speaker 1: shooter went out there and then try to hit him
- 1:26:01Speaker 1: coming out, let it fly over you and hit it
- 1:26:04Speaker 1: behind him.
- 1:26:05Speaker 3: I'll tell you what.
- 1:26:06Speaker 4: The one mess up, the biggest mess up today was
- 1:26:09Speaker 4: when that teal hit the water, Like, get out there,
- 1:26:11Speaker 4: go get him, and so I like pop out trying
- 1:26:14Speaker 4: to impress my dad.
- 1:26:14Speaker 3: Out here.
- 1:26:15Speaker 4: Let's go, I'm gonna show him.
- 1:26:16Speaker 3: Get the gun.
- 1:26:17Speaker 4: I get him in my sights. He starts taking off.
- 1:26:18Speaker 4: I'm like, this is gonna be awesome safety.
- 1:26:21Speaker 3: So I just walk back. Or when that teal was
- 1:26:28Speaker 3: going by and then I was like, Taylor, get it,
- 1:26:30Speaker 3: get it, get it, And it seems like hey, no, no, no,
- 1:26:33Speaker 3: I'm a little excited at.
- 1:26:36Speaker 1: The fire cal. We were talking about this in the
- 1:26:39Speaker 1: blind and I gave an answer, but it wasn't real specific.
- 1:26:41Speaker 1: Uh how many hours you're into your dog? Oh, I
- 1:26:47Speaker 1: said thousands?
- 1:26:49Speaker 5: Probably, Yeah, I mean you're one, it's like two hours
- 1:26:56Speaker 5: a day for like training training, and then twenty four
- 1:27:02Speaker 5: hours a day for obedience training. You know you're I
- 1:27:05Speaker 5: mean it's like like I said, like, uh, when we
- 1:27:08Speaker 5: were plucking birds and having her place on my jacket,
- 1:27:11Speaker 5: like you are always always training, and so like when
- 1:27:15Speaker 5: that when you get that brand new little puppy, you
- 1:27:19Speaker 5: can almost essentially at like seven weeks, imprint things that
- 1:27:25Speaker 5: are going to be very beneficial to you for the
- 1:27:28Speaker 5: rest of that dog's life or things that you will
- 1:27:31Speaker 5: absolutely for the rest of your life. Yeah, yeah, yeah,
- 1:27:36Speaker 5: So it's yeah, it's not.
- 1:27:37Speaker 6: I mean yeah, I mean great training, place, training, healing.
- 1:27:41Speaker 5: I mean at all those good citizens.
- 1:27:44Speaker 6: At the end of the day, you're like you're training,
- 1:27:48Speaker 6: but you're also like keeping that dog safe too, because
- 1:27:51Speaker 6: like say, if we were like a bunch of trucks
- 1:27:56Speaker 6: driving around in the field or whatever, you tell your
- 1:27:58Speaker 6: dog place and that dog doesn't move, of like your
- 1:28:00Speaker 6: dog's gonna be safe.
- 1:28:01Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, and there's like a couple of run around
- 1:28:03Speaker 1: trying to bite truck tires.
- 1:28:04Speaker 6: It's good ran over for sure.
- 1:28:07Speaker 5: Think of how many like public hunting spots that are
- 1:28:10Speaker 5: like unfortunately, like right next to the highway, right and
- 1:28:14Speaker 5: dog goes and tries to chase a rooster, a crippled
- 1:28:17Speaker 5: duck or whatever, and yeah, it's just yeah, there's so
- 1:28:20Speaker 5: many ways for things to go bad, and they're the
- 1:28:23Speaker 5: hunting bond is is amazing because they put all of
- 1:28:26Speaker 5: their trust in you, and when you watch them get hurt,
- 1:28:31Speaker 5: sometimes they come back to you and they're like you said, go,
- 1:28:34Speaker 5: I went, what happened? You know, And it's like that
- 1:28:38Speaker 5: all you know all the time. So yeah, but lots
- 1:28:41Speaker 5: of lots of time in the dog.
- 1:28:42Speaker 1: When we got our dog, I got it to where
- 1:28:46Speaker 1: I could say get over here and it would do that,
- 1:28:49Speaker 1: and then where I could say get out of here,
- 1:28:50Speaker 1: it would do that. And I'm like, this dog is trained.
- 1:28:54Speaker 3: That's great and go.
- 1:28:58Speaker 1: Largely largely of intonation here She's.
- 1:29:04Speaker 3: Now That relationship is awesome. And I said to snort
- 1:29:07Speaker 3: is famous. Like my buddy texted like, hey, how cow's
- 1:29:09Speaker 3: dog do ask me about?
- 1:29:13Speaker 1: Did you tell me about the story on the dog?
- 1:29:18Speaker 3: I did see the was missing a little bit of fur, Yeah, exactly,
- 1:29:21Speaker 3: the bald eer.
- 1:29:23Speaker 5: Yeah, it's it's a super long story, but yeah, she
- 1:29:25Speaker 5: got bit by a snake and almost died. But the
- 1:29:29Speaker 5: result is I got a dog with balder, which is yeah.
- 1:29:35Speaker 1: I've been talking lately way three legged dogs. There's so
- 1:29:38Speaker 1: many three legged dogs around these days and how much
- 1:29:41Speaker 1: attention they get and got me thinking like if you
- 1:29:43Speaker 1: had a one eared dog, it would get a lot
- 1:29:45Speaker 1: of attention.
- 1:29:46Speaker 5: You know, people would want to come up and pet
- 1:29:49Speaker 5: the way. It's kind of like a patch missing, you know.
- 1:29:52Speaker 5: So I think that most people are like, something's wrong
- 1:29:55Speaker 5: with that dog, like dog's got cancer, dogs got something,
- 1:30:00Speaker 5: so nobody says anything about it, which is pretty funny.
- 1:30:03Speaker 5: It takes a while to like warm up and be like, so,
- 1:30:06Speaker 5: what's the deal with that?
- 1:30:07Speaker 1: Ear, I'm so sorry about your laws?
- 1:30:10Speaker 5: Maybe yeah, but yeah, we got to dole out compliments
- 1:30:16Speaker 5: to you guys. So, like Steven said, situational awareness, I
- 1:30:20Speaker 5: mean just so just relaxing to be around people who
- 1:30:26Speaker 5: are in that first time position but can decipher for themselves, like, oh,
- 1:30:32Speaker 5: this is what these guys with more knowledge in this
- 1:30:35Speaker 5: situation are picking up on. So you guys are looking
- 1:30:38Speaker 5: where we're looking. You know, we didn't spend a whole
- 1:30:40Speaker 5: lot of time talking about the hands of the clock
- 1:30:44Speaker 5: right when we're like birds at twelve o'clock, birds at
- 1:30:46Speaker 5: two o'clock.
- 1:30:49Speaker 1: I'm talking about the movement of your hands.
- 1:30:51Speaker 3: Yeah, we did. I was like, hey, there's one over there.
- 1:30:54Speaker 4: Yeah, look your eyes.
- 1:31:01Speaker 3: Damn giant.
- 1:31:06Speaker 5: Why don't you wave about it?
- 1:31:09Speaker 9: Hey?
- 1:31:09Speaker 4: But you know, it's crazy, as we were hiding from
- 1:31:10Speaker 4: those ducks the whole time. As soon as we got
- 1:31:12Speaker 4: out of the blind, like fifty of them, we're just
- 1:31:13Speaker 4: kind of ripping around us. We should have just hung
- 1:31:15Speaker 4: out on top.
- 1:31:16Speaker 1: Yeah, sometimes that happens, like all that, like keep quiet.
- 1:31:22Speaker 5: But yeah, the the the camaraderie aspect, he has obviously
- 1:31:27Speaker 5: up down right, so you know that things are just
- 1:31:31Speaker 5: better better when people are happy. And so you guys
- 1:31:34Speaker 5: joke around, but then the serious things you immediately click
- 1:31:38Speaker 5: in and turn it on and we're like, yeah, gun safety,
- 1:31:41Speaker 5: we're serious about that. Oh, somebody's trying to uh improve
- 1:31:46Speaker 5: what we're doing a little bit. Oh okay, be focused,
- 1:31:49Speaker 5: be serious and then, like we already covered, you immediately
- 1:31:54Speaker 5: apply it or try to apply it right. Which there's
- 1:31:59Speaker 5: a lot of uh teaching of fishing hunting stuff too,
- 1:32:03Speaker 5: where it's like, yeah, I have certain people that have
- 1:32:07Speaker 5: been around a lot, you know, it's like why I
- 1:32:10Speaker 5: need to just quit talking because this person does not
- 1:32:13Speaker 5: apply it, like they need to fall in their face
- 1:32:15Speaker 5: over and over again and then then which is how
- 1:32:18Speaker 5: I really learned a lot of things too. But you
- 1:32:22Speaker 5: guys are not not those folks.
- 1:32:23Speaker 1: I know what you're talking about. You Like I say
- 1:32:25Speaker 1: to my boy, he's like, I'm gonna go get that duck,
- 1:32:27Speaker 1: Like you're not gonna get that duck. Not gonna go
- 1:32:29Speaker 1: get that duck. You I can get that duck now,
- 1:32:31Speaker 1: I'm gonna go go Okay, go get the duck. In
- 1:32:34Speaker 1: a while later, like didn't get the dock.
- 1:32:36Speaker 3: I didn't get the duck.
- 1:32:38Speaker 5: Did you see all the ducks? I scared away by
- 1:32:39Speaker 5: walking around and all the things. You're like, yep, I did, okay,
- 1:32:42Speaker 5: now yeah, and then uh appreciators the number Like, man,
- 1:32:50Speaker 5: it is such a bummer to have any sort of
- 1:32:53Speaker 5: a day, any sort of an experience, and at the
- 1:32:56Speaker 5: end of the day, you're like, I just don't know
- 1:32:59Speaker 5: if these people took home what they were supposed to
- 1:33:04Speaker 5: take home, right, but you.
- 1:33:05Speaker 1: Cat wasted all his nice emotion on him.
- 1:33:07Speaker 5: Yeah, exactly, exactly. I got to bottle all that ship
- 1:33:11Speaker 5: back up.
- 1:33:13Speaker 1: Is he left it land in the blind?
- 1:33:15Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 1:33:16Speaker 5: But yeah, being around people who appreciate, like oh, the place,
- 1:33:20Speaker 5: the instruction, the just you know, the time and effort stuff,
- 1:33:26Speaker 5: the basic stuff. And you guys are appreciators. So thank
- 1:33:28Speaker 5: you very very much for that, because that's that's a
- 1:33:31Speaker 5: big deal.
- 1:33:33Speaker 3: Yeah, this has been incredible And I felt the last thing.
- 1:33:35Speaker 3: You know, I'm sure you felt this way too, Like
- 1:33:37Speaker 3: you're you don't want to be like standing around too much,
- 1:33:39Speaker 3: Like the last thing you want is to be like
- 1:33:41Speaker 3: a liability or to leaving people like, oh they kind
- 1:33:43Speaker 3: of they kind of sucked.
- 1:33:45Speaker 1: Yeah, I don't know if you noticed our host this morning.
- 1:33:48Speaker 1: Let's not talk about who he said it about, but
- 1:33:50Speaker 1: our host this morning said, of a couple of individuals,
- 1:33:54Speaker 1: neither of them is someone you'd want to be in
- 1:33:57Speaker 1: a duck blind with. But you see what he's getting that. Yeah, yeah,
- 1:34:04Speaker 1: don't want me to duk line. That's like a thing
- 1:34:06Speaker 1: you guys can start saying that now.
- 1:34:09Speaker 5: Yeah, well you know you're like getting your hands around
- 1:34:12Speaker 5: the meat eater thing. Right. Well, Krin does a phenomenal job.
- 1:34:18Speaker 5: And despite despite the phenomenal job that Krin does, I
- 1:34:21Speaker 5: don't read all of her emails, even when they're sent
- 1:34:26Speaker 5: directly to me.
- 1:34:27Speaker 1: Uh.
- 1:34:28Speaker 5: And I was like, uh, football, guys, I didn't know
- 1:34:34Speaker 5: if you played football. I don't know if you just
- 1:34:36Speaker 5: talk about football.
- 1:34:38Speaker 1: Was like, Ship, I played football, and uh yeah.
- 1:34:44Speaker 3: So.
- 1:34:48Speaker 5: I was like the runt of the litter and I
- 1:34:49Speaker 5: played offensive tackle. So I was like, I was like,
- 1:34:52Speaker 5: you know, Ship, that's great. So it's a big soft
- 1:34:54Speaker 5: spot for the old line, especially tackles. And then uh,
- 1:34:59Speaker 5: my family, my dad went to law school in d C.
- 1:35:03Speaker 5: So I was there during like the eighty six U
- 1:35:07Speaker 5: super yeah right, and so and we were like lifelong
- 1:35:12Speaker 5: Redskins fans.
- 1:35:13Speaker 3: And so Doug Williams was the QB and I can
- 1:35:16Speaker 3: sing you the.
- 1:35:17Speaker 5: Fight song to this day. Well I'm not gonna do
- 1:35:21Speaker 5: it right, No, hell to the Redskin heal victory.
- 1:35:27Speaker 1: Oh, I got it.
- 1:35:28Speaker 5: Yeah, everybody knows that one. You didn't do that big surprise,
- 1:35:31Speaker 5: But I mean that's great.
- 1:35:33Speaker 1: What I didn't do that was poor hostings. I didn't
- 1:35:35Speaker 1: I didn't do I didn't offer up a good synopsis
- 1:35:37Speaker 1: of busting with the boys. Do you mind up offering
- 1:35:39Speaker 1: up a you know, if someone says, you know, what's
- 1:35:42Speaker 1: your show about?
- 1:35:44Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, I guess in a nutshell, it's like
- 1:35:47Speaker 3: we have a platform where everything we do we want
- 1:35:50Speaker 3: to bring the locker room to life. So if you
- 1:35:51Speaker 3: guys were to come on the bus, which would be
- 1:35:53Speaker 3: awesome one day, it's just how do you, you know,
- 1:35:55Speaker 3: have the camaraderie, have the vibes of like getting to
- 1:35:57Speaker 3: know you your story, like bringing that locker room the
- 1:36:00Speaker 3: life that we kind of grew up in, because the
- 1:36:02Speaker 3: locker room is such a melting pot where jokes and
- 1:36:05Speaker 3: like all the stuff that you wish everybody got to
- 1:36:07Speaker 3: experience and kind of, you know, we had the privilege
- 1:36:10Speaker 3: of playing in the NFL and playing at the level
- 1:36:12Speaker 3: we got to to where you know, we're able to
- 1:36:15Speaker 3: have kind of these raw conversations and have fun with
- 1:36:17Speaker 3: all of our guests, uh, to where it is like
- 1:36:19Speaker 3: we the goal of bringing the locker room to life
- 1:36:22Speaker 3: is it is it sweaty and steamy. It has been
- 1:36:25Speaker 3: used to be and sometimes it still does. Just like
- 1:36:27Speaker 3: you know, your back and.
- 1:36:30Speaker 1: Towels laying everywhere on your.
- 1:36:33Speaker 4: I told you about before. When we first started, we
- 1:36:35Speaker 4: were in the back of an RV park. Yeah, feeling
- 1:36:37Speaker 4: stealing heat in like ninety degree weather right next to
- 1:36:39Speaker 4: the train tracks.
- 1:36:41Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:36:42Speaker 5: Plate, Yeah, that.
- 1:36:43Speaker 3: First year we were we were it was because the
- 1:36:45Speaker 3: bus doesn't run. It just sat in the gravel. It
- 1:36:48Speaker 3: was just in a gravel parking lot. And we would
- 1:36:50Speaker 3: have to tarp it up to where the heat wouldn't
- 1:36:52Speaker 3: get in and we're you know, July dying, and then
- 1:36:56Speaker 3: we'd have to power it with uh you know, if
- 1:36:58Speaker 3: we got to plug into the r V the r
- 1:37:00Speaker 3: V park or just running it off a generator or two.
- 1:37:03Speaker 3: And that's how we kind of, you know, started it. Yeah,
- 1:37:05Speaker 3: it's kind of how it got going. Then we got
- 1:37:07Speaker 3: in a little shed. Now we're in a little bit
- 1:37:09Speaker 3: better warehouse. I know, the working conditions can be better
- 1:37:11Speaker 3: for the team.
- 1:37:13Speaker 4: Like you go, you walk into place like this, you're like, man,
- 1:37:15Speaker 4: we really are screwing our should Yeah.
- 1:37:22Speaker 1: And then it's it's obviously available anywhere people want to
- 1:37:25Speaker 1: go get it.
- 1:37:25Speaker 4: Yeah, yep, Spotify, Apple, downcast, YouTube, whatever you want.
- 1:37:29Speaker 3: That's how you can find bust with.
- 1:37:31Speaker 1: And how if people want to if people want to
- 1:37:32Speaker 1: have a laugh looking at you guys stuff. And you're
- 1:37:35Speaker 1: real active on social media.
- 1:37:36Speaker 3: Oh yeah, very active on social media.
- 1:37:38Speaker 4: We posted three times just be on the show. Yeah,
- 1:37:41Speaker 4: we touch my phone once. That's how active we are.

- 1:38:38Speaker 1: I will take that with you.
- 1:38:39Speaker 3: Four point five.
- 1:38:41Speaker 5: The solid attempt at a beard, Yeah, it.
- 1:38:46Speaker 3: Was an attempt. I wouldn't say it's anything I ever
- 1:38:48Speaker 3: need to go back to great a mustache Yeah. Yeah.
- 1:38:51Speaker 3: By the way, you have a very strong mustache.
- 1:38:54Speaker 5: Myself, I can't grow beard, so this is what I got.
- 1:38:56Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:38:57Speaker 4: Ye, all all have is a mustache. It's all looks
- 1:39:01Speaker 4: like Pubi Carroll honestly.
- 1:39:03Speaker 5: Yeah. I grew an entire guiding season. This is back
- 1:39:08Speaker 5: when I was living in Missoula entire fall guiding season.
- 1:39:13Speaker 5: I decided, I was like, I'm going to force this
- 1:39:15Speaker 5: and I did not shave the entire time. And I
- 1:39:18Speaker 5: got back to town and went to like my favorite bar,
- 1:39:22Speaker 5: bartenders right and uh like Charlie b situation, like all
- 1:39:26Speaker 5: female bartenders, and everyone was like, just what are you doing?
- 1:39:34Speaker 1: Oh, speaking of pubes. Uh, I had to go do
- 1:39:38Speaker 1: this thing I was telling you guys, remember telling you
- 1:39:40Speaker 1: this or not? Like I had this like sort of
- 1:39:43Speaker 1: weird pain moving around my groinal region.
- 1:39:46Speaker 4: Oh, we've talked about it.
- 1:39:47Speaker 3: It was like over my legs, swollen testicles.
- 1:39:49Speaker 1: You had the well, no, it wasn't, though you had
- 1:39:51Speaker 1: that rash. I don't know what be like in the
- 1:39:54Speaker 1: crease of my It's just moving around. And I know,
- 1:39:56Speaker 1: and I'm real susceptible to stuff too, Like if you
- 1:39:58Speaker 1: tell me that, if you also said you had elbow cancer,
- 1:40:01Speaker 1: I swear my elbowed hurt and Seth had some kind
- 1:40:06Speaker 1: of hernia deal going on, and but that wasn't it.
- 1:40:09Speaker 1: And and so I had this wandering pain and then
- 1:40:11Speaker 1: your mind starts running away with you, and I'm always uh.
- 1:40:14Speaker 1: So I was like, man, maybe maybe I got to
- 1:40:16Speaker 1: hern you, maybe I got testicular cancer. So I go
- 1:40:19Speaker 1: down and it's like, legit hurts, but they've ruled out
- 1:40:22Speaker 1: all the bad stuff. But uh, when you go to
- 1:40:25Speaker 1: get this done, this is the most It's not humiliating
- 1:40:27Speaker 1: beause everybody down there is cool.
- 1:40:28Speaker 3: But you got it.
- 1:40:29Speaker 1: They like you lay down, okay, and they come in
- 1:40:32Speaker 1: and they you say, you take your pants off. They
- 1:40:34Speaker 1: come in and say, like, lay your penis up on
- 1:40:36Speaker 1: your stomach, and then.
- 1:40:41Speaker 3: That's so funny.
- 1:40:41Speaker 4: I don't.
- 1:40:47Speaker 5: Yeah, don't worry.
- 1:40:47Speaker 3: I'll hold it here the entire time.
- 1:40:54Speaker 1: And then you put like a little towel over and
- 1:40:57Speaker 1: then they lay the boys like up on the platter like.
- 1:40:59Speaker 3: Between and then they're like digging in there.
- 1:41:03Speaker 1: It's so compromising.
- 1:41:05Speaker 3: I had a sport, heard you, I had sarved. Yeah.
- 1:41:09Speaker 1: The first that you think that gel gel, you tell
- 1:41:13Speaker 1: like anything going through your head about how like the
- 1:41:15Speaker 1: woman doesn't care.
- 1:41:20Speaker 4: Tell me for a second. When that gel hit your mind,
- 1:41:22Speaker 4: you're like, I come down here.
- 1:41:25Speaker 1: What's so funny as you can tell? Yeah, just the
- 1:41:27Speaker 1: fact she's like this, I do this for a living. Yeah,
- 1:41:31Speaker 1: I appreciate this is probably strange for you, but I
- 1:41:33Speaker 1: don't care. There's nothing I could see. There's nothing I
- 1:41:39Speaker 1: could not see that I care about.
- 1:41:41Speaker 3: That's funny, that's awesome. Good for you on that.
- 1:41:45Speaker 1: I'm fine. I still know why I have a little
- 1:41:48Speaker 1: phantom wandering pain. But maybe, like I don't know, strang
- 1:41:51Speaker 1: a little strange guys.
- 1:41:57Speaker 5: So what is the next hunt? You guys gonna uh
- 1:42:02Speaker 5: started scheming and and find another one here after this
- 1:42:05Speaker 5: duck adventure.
- 1:42:06Speaker 3: Part of me wants to hit some big game.
- 1:42:08Speaker 1: I think.
- 1:42:10Speaker 4: Something about camping. I want to sit there and be like,
- 1:42:14Speaker 4: it's been four days. We've been on the trail for
- 1:42:17Speaker 4: four days.
- 1:42:18Speaker 5: We're un We can make you eat those words.
- 1:42:20Speaker 3: You know, there's no question and.
- 1:42:24Speaker 4: I'm I'm not what you would call a survivor. You're
- 1:42:28Speaker 4: not gonna put me in the wild to be like,
- 1:42:29Speaker 4: we'll see in a week. I will be dead in
- 1:42:31Speaker 4: a week, picked apart, so I will definitely need you
- 1:42:33Speaker 4: if that was ever gonna be the case. Yeah, just
- 1:42:39Speaker 4: press the button, right.
- 1:42:41Speaker 3: I think an l kunk would be really.
- 1:42:44Speaker 1: Everyone's to hunt them milk.
- 1:42:46Speaker 5: Yeah, I don't know a lot of them these days,
- 1:42:48Speaker 5: to see I see.
- 1:42:49Speaker 3: I think Bear would be sweet.
- 1:42:51Speaker 4: In the Chester's office yesterday, he's got that. He's talking
- 1:42:54Speaker 4: me about the story of how he got it. I
- 1:42:56Speaker 4: was like, man, every story just an apex predator out there,
- 1:43:00Speaker 4: me and him.
- 1:43:03Speaker 5: It's roast beef of the woods man. That's Bears.
