Transcript
- 0:00Happy Sunday morning everybody. It is the Daytona 500.
- 0:08I hope you all are as happy as I am.
- 0:11Kim and I have had a wonderful trip.
- 0:14It was called Winter in Yellowstone and we and we saw it
- 0:18all. We are, our heart is full and
- 0:21we're ready to go back to St. Louis, MO.
- 0:24So a lot of people are like, Herman, how are you going to
- 0:27watch the Daytona 500 as you travel back to St.
- 0:31Louis, MO? Well, that's easy, everybody.
- 0:35We've got Wi-Fi on the airplane and we'll be watching it with
- 0:38you all. We land in St.
- 0:40Louis, MO tonight at 9:00. All right, everybody, let's
- 0:46remember that I help my local race tracks.
- 0:49I'm a racer. As I reminded everybody my whole
- 0:53life. They're like, well, we really
- 0:55like you on TV, Kenny. I'm like, well, you know what I
- 0:59don't like being on TV and I, we were dying to remind them all
- 1:02the time. I am a race car driver.
- 1:09So I'm right there with you all. I am excited about the Daytona
- 1:13500 ready to get the year started.
- 1:15Before we get on to the Hot topics lever, let me remind you
- 1:19of this. For some reason, it is today
- 1:23that wakes everybody up. Companies, fans alike.
- 1:29They still think it's like New Year's.
- 1:31You know, it's the start of the year.
- 1:32But when you turn the TV on today and you see them running
- 1:35the Daytona 500, in some weird way, that's what starts the
- 1:41year. When they see that Daytona 500
- 1:44on all the local race car drivers throughout America, they
- 1:47really start getting their race cars ready to go.
- 1:49It's like, oh damn, racing's here.
- 1:51I always thought that was funny and I loved it.
- 1:53So today, for some reason, it marks really the start of race
- 1:57season. OK everybody, wow, right on cue,
- 2:012 minutes, the opening monologue.
- 2:03How about that? We got news.
- 2:07We got big news. Our seven time champion, Jimmie
- 2:12Johnson, his plate is full on. He's got a dear friend, Marty
- 2:19Smith. Think that's, that's the name,
- 2:21right, Marty? They got a, they got a, a
- 2:24podcast out called Marty and McGee or something like that.
- 2:29It's a good one. Love those guys.
- 2:31They're friends of mine. Jimmie Johnson Yesterday on
- 2:35Saturday, the seven time champion NASCAR race car driver
- 2:40Jimmie Johnson said. My life isn't in a great spot
- 2:45right now, and I'm here to announce that I am done running
- 2:51in the NASCAR Cup Series after this Daytona 500.
- 2:56Now Jimmy is leaving the door open to run maybe the trucks,
- 3:01maybe Xfinity. We all know that he is going to
- 3:03race around his home area. You know, he loves California.
- 3:07Jimmy Johnson, he's a West Coast boy, no doubt about that.
- 3:11He promotes that area all the time.
- 3:14Jimmy. I think Jimmy Johnson grew up in
- 3:16a trailer court. You know, you, you, you do a lot
- 3:19of talking about all you got to have money nowadays.
- 3:22Well, Jimmy Johnson, he didn't have any damn money, grew up in
- 3:25a trailer court, His mom and dad, wonderful people, but he
- 3:29got it done with all talent. So Jimmy said I'm going to run
- 3:33San Diego, which makes all the sense in the world.
- 3:36I think he's running a truck out there.
- 3:37I'm not not sure what's going to go on there.
- 3:40But Jimmy Johnson did leave the door open, maybe to have some
- 3:44fun. But he is finally done running
- 3:46the Cup series. And I got to tell you, Jimmy,
- 3:50thank God. I mean, that was all the love in
- 3:53the world. But man, I love you so much and
- 3:56it pained me to watch you run around there.
- 3:58You know, as great as you are, I like to listen.
- 4:02Respond right here. I love Jimmy Johnson, love him
- 4:06because he's so good to me. But let's be honest, it's kind
- 4:09of like watching one of your kids suffer after being so
- 4:13great. After 7 championships, it was
- 4:15very hard for me to watch Jimmy run 25th and 30th in in those
- 4:20selective cup races. And I know I get it.
- 4:23He was trying to help his legacy team.
- 4:25I get it, it's going to help the sponsors.
- 4:28But still, you know when you watch Jimmy struggle, it was it
- 4:31was it hurt my heart. So hopefully he'll win the
- 4:34Daytona 500 today. Will Jimmie Johnson be the Black
- 4:38Horse? Will Jimmie Johnson win the
- 4:41Daytona 500 today? Willie respond right here.
- 4:46One more thing on the Jimmy Johnson announcement.
- 4:50I think Jimmy comes to a point where you start looking around
- 4:54and you're like, damn, there's there's my friend Jeff Gordon.
- 4:57He's getting more out of it than I am running around beating my
- 5:01head against the wall. You know, Jimmy Johnson out
- 5:04there running 25th and 30th and you look over here and here's
- 5:07your here's your old boss, Jeff Gordon.
- 5:09Let's remember everybody, Jeff Gordon is the one that told Rick
- 5:12Hendrick, hey, I'm going down into turn one in this O'Reilly
- 5:16Auto Parts series. And I let off the gas and this
- 5:19guy comes flying by me, drives into turn 1 deeper than Jeff
- 5:23Gordon. And guess who it was, It was
- 5:25Jimmy Johnson. So Jeff Gordon told Rick
- 5:28Hendrick, hey, we got to get this guy that didn't didn't even
- 5:31know who Jimmy Johnson was and that's how Jimmy got hired.
- 5:34But anyway, you look at Jimmy's got to be looking around and
- 5:38Jeff Gordon is getting a lot of fulfilment.
- 5:41You know, Jeff is an executive. He shows up at the racetrack,
- 5:45people still give him his respect, gives him his due.
- 5:49And I, I think Jimmie Johnson had a look at that and go, damn,
- 5:52Jeff's got it going on. Maybe if I become an executive
- 5:56with Legacy Motorsports, I can wear my little half black coat.
- 6:01You better not, Jimmy. Don't.
- 6:03Don't you do that. I love it when Jeff Gordon goes
- 6:07around with this little mini me Rick Hendrick little coat on.
- 6:10It makes me laugh. What do they call that?
- 6:11A vest coat? All right, well, listen, we all
- 6:15do what we got to do. We got to get it out of our
- 6:17system, right? Get it out of your system.
- 6:21Everybody does what they want to do.
- 6:23I just want to congratulate Jimmy for finally laying his
- 6:25tools down and go home. And boy, it's been a long Rd.
- 6:28He left NASCAR and he went to IndyCar.
- 6:30It's like, OK, it didn't work there.
- 6:32Then he left there and he came back to NASCAR and it time to
- 6:36become an executive, right buddy batter come dirt racing with me.
- 6:40They're 20 to 50 lap features. It's cool.
- 6:42Here come dirt racing with me. Jimmy, I'll let you run my mod.
- 6:47OK, Switching subjects, everybody switching subjects.
- 6:54How about that role that NASCAR is on right now?
- 6:58NASCAR is on a roll 2 races in a row where the drivers didn't
- 7:03crash and we finished coming to the green flag.
- 7:07You know, in some weird way I think that's what makes the fans
- 7:10happy is just the races finishing under green.
- 7:14I believe the fans are so disappointed that when they, you
- 7:18know, wreck all the time and they finish under caution or
- 7:21this or that, you know, you know, when it's not an exciting
- 7:25finish, then it's not an exciting finish.
- 7:28When the record at the finish, then it's a bad show and Oh my
- 7:31God. But the last two nights they
- 7:35have come to the checker. And how about Austin Hill?
- 7:39You know, I don't know what it is, but I think Austin Hill won
- 7:44like three in a row there at Daytona.
- 7:46And they're like, oh, but then he'd go to Atlanta and he'd win
- 7:48there. But Austin Hill is one of the
- 7:52very best, and why he's not any more popular than what he is
- 7:57amazes me. Coming down the back straight
- 8:01away and you have all these Hendrick Slash Junior
- 8:06Motorsports cars, they're just bearing down this one lonely old
- 8:10Richard Childers car, Austin Hill.
- 8:12Austin Hill drives for Richard Childers and he got out a little
- 8:16far and they started to attack him and Austin Hill block this
- 8:20lane, block that lane and block this lane and won the damn race.
- 8:26Congratulations to NASCAR, we're off to one of the best starts in
- 8:29a long time. This man right here is coming
- 8:32out to get our luggage. He's a tough man right there.
- 8:35He's a tough man. 25 people, single handedly.
- 8:40I want to roll my luggage out to the bus myself, but he's going
- 8:43to come out and get everybody's luggage.
- 8:45So All right, everybody, it's the Daytona 500.
- 8:49We've got a great start. Chandler Smith won the truck
- 8:52race. Austin Hill won the O'Reilly
- 8:55Auto Parts race. Who Will Win the Daytona 500
- 8:58today? If you've made it this far, my
- 9:01choice is Danny Hamlin. It's a heartfelt pick.
- 9:06Danny has been roughed up enough.
- 9:08I'm going with Danny Hamlin. He did not run the last
- 9:12practice. That was the big story.
- 9:14Denny Hamlin did not run the last practice.
- 9:17Where was Denny Hamlin? The cameras caught him in the
- 9:20middle of Lake Lloyd, the pond in the middle of the Daytona
- 9:24Speedway. He was fishing.
- 9:26Looks to me like Denny Hamlin's relaxed.
- 9:28I'm going with Denny Hamlin just because I feel bad for him and
- 9:31he's won the Daytona 500 what, 2 times?
- 9:35Respond right here. How many times has Denny Hamlin
- 9:39won the Daytona 500? Happy Daytona 500 day everybody.
