- 7:39Speaker 2: steal money. They stole hopes, plans, years of hard work,
- 7:44Speaker 2: and the part of a lot of ordinary people. They
- 7:46Speaker 2: stole Johnny Doe's first payment of the house, Mabel Brown's

- 9:28Speaker 2: And I don't feel like trusting this one to the boys.
- 9:32Speaker 2: Our spotter has to be somebody, smile, somebody. The miners
- 9:35Speaker 2: don't know, somebody who can keep him alive long enough
- 9:38Speaker 2: for rust. They get him safely in a cellar. Hey,
- 9:43Speaker 2: what do you say, s I would consider it a privilege? Hey,

- 19:48Speaker 2: and stall you understand, Hold your brother on the line.
- 19:51Speaker 2: Try to find out where he's calling for. I'll do
- 19:53Speaker 2: my best, Nicky. I've been the call traced. Good now
- 19:58Speaker 2: ring forteen oh nine in the other room, Elias, and
- 20:01Speaker 2: he won't have to do what you say. Now, he
- 20:02Speaker 2: won't say where he is, Elias. Get him to come
- 20:04Speaker 2: to the Haven's all right now? Answer it? Yes, yes, Hello.
- 20:12Speaker 2: You'll have to speak up. You'll have to speak loud.
- 20:14Speaker 2: I can't hear you. Shut up. That's Joel man? Oh yeah,
- 20:19Speaker 2: where's he calling from? Slab eight? What are you talking about? Salting?
- 20:22Speaker 2: Joel Marner's body has been fished out of the East River.
- 20:25Speaker 2: Why hurt me? Three rifle slugs in him? Rubbed out.
- 20:28Speaker 2: Joel's been dead at least forty eight hours dead forty
- 20:32Speaker 2: eight hours? Who put that ad in this morning's paper?
- 20:36Speaker 2: Who's that on the phone. Mama dropped that phone. Get
- 20:40Speaker 2: away from that window. What mister queen you do right
- 20:44Speaker 2: a window of the hotel across the street. Did he
- 20:46Speaker 2: get over there and grab the site? Right? Hillary is Elias?
- 20:52Speaker 8: It's dead?
- 21:03Speaker 2: No, no, no. All we know is we found a
- 21:07Speaker 2: smoking rifle in this room at the Universal Hotel, under
- 21:10Speaker 2: an open window, same gun that killed Joel mana night
- 21:12Speaker 2: before last. Keller got away before my boys could cross
- 21:15Speaker 2: over here from the Haven. Now lay off and let
- 21:18Speaker 2: us walk where you have spector.
- 21:21Speaker 3: It wasn't anybody's fall from.
- 21:23Speaker 2: This fourteenth floor window. The killer had a perfect view
- 21:25Speaker 2: of Miner's window on the fourteenth floor of the Haven.
- 21:27Speaker 2: Of course, that narrow street, you could have plugged Elias
- 21:32Speaker 2: with this rifle. Niggas whoa slow down the nikki's right.
- 21:35Speaker 2: No one could have foreseen this. Bila must have trailed
- 21:38Speaker 2: Joel Mona two nights ago from his office, shut him
- 21:40Speaker 2: and dumped him into the river.
- 21:41Speaker 3: Then he must have gone gunning for a liast. But
- 21:43Speaker 3: by that time Alis had escaped and disappeared.
- 21:46Speaker 2: Somehow this killer found out, maybe from something on Joe's body,
- 21:50Speaker 2: that the brothers used the code words dot and dash
- 21:53Speaker 2: for secret communication.
- 21:54Speaker 4: So he got the idea of bluring alife out of
- 21:57Speaker 4: hiding by placing that ad in the paper?
- 21:58Speaker 2: Is it from Joel Alias? Fell for the trick and
- 22:01Speaker 2: checked into the Haven. The killer simply waited for nightfall,
- 22:03Speaker 2: drew a liars to the phone at his window by
- 22:05Speaker 2: calling from this room at the Universal clever touched that,
- 22:09Speaker 2: and then when he was sure it was Elias and
- 22:11Speaker 2: the phone, simply shot him from across the street and
- 22:13Speaker 2: made his escape. But who signed? No clue in this
- 22:17Speaker 2: rifle is a hock shop job. Killer must have brought
- 22:21Speaker 2: it in dismantled in this suitcase we found here, But
- 22:23Speaker 2: the suitcase is also a pickup. There's not a print
- 22:26Speaker 2: from the rule or a single witness saw the killer
- 22:28Speaker 2: after he checked in. Come on, really, inspector, Yes, really,
- 22:36Speaker 2: here I find out anything else? Yeah, I got his
- 22:38Speaker 2: hotel registration card, Inspector. Now gimme when did he check
- 22:42Speaker 2: into the Universal? Death from a stamp day down here?
- 22:46Speaker 2: Same ninety bump Joel two nights ago too. J. J.
- 22:50Speaker 2: Jones Chicago and Black Planter Phony.
- 22:53Speaker 3: But there must be a description the bell boy who
- 22:55Speaker 3: carried his bag up here?
- 22:56Speaker 2: What's on that vally? Description short of short, bell hopshare
- 23:00Speaker 2: or maybe not so sure, age round twenty five to
- 23:03Speaker 2: fifty four, dark glasses, sort of medium colored hat and coat,
- 23:06Speaker 2: hat pulled over his eyes, held a handkerchief over his
- 23:09Speaker 2: mouth when he talked. Bellhop remembers him five.
- 23:12Speaker 3: That might be anybody, even.
- 23:14Speaker 2: A woman dressed up of the man, any one of
- 23:16Speaker 2: the ten thousand victims of the miner's con game, blasted,
- 23:19Speaker 2: What do we do now, inspect to start checking ten
- 23:22Speaker 2: thousand alibis? I don't think, sergeant, that's going to be necessary.
- 23:25Speaker 2: You don't what other way is there? I suppose then
- 23:27Speaker 2: you picked the killer of the Mina brothers out of
- 23:30Speaker 2: the whole city of New York, just like that. It's
- 23:32Speaker 2: one of the people we met in the course of
- 23:33Speaker 2: the investigation. It is How do you know?
- 23:36Speaker 3: And what people whom have we met? A butler, a
- 23:38Speaker 3: taxi driver, a woman on.
- 23:39Speaker 2: The street, some hotel employees.
- 23:41Speaker 3: Room, click, manager, waiter, telephone operator, bell, but elevator man,
- 23:45Speaker 3: I'll come off at elarette.
- 23:46Speaker 2: We didn't even get their name. We don't even know
- 23:48Speaker 2: if any album was a victim of the swindle. Maestroke,
- 23:51Speaker 2: that's the same. I know exactly who murdered the Mona brothers.
- 24:10Speaker 2: And there, ladies and gentlemen, you have the mystery. Now
- 24:13Speaker 2: suppose you home, Mom, Chatt detectives and our guests in
- 24:15Speaker 2: the studio compare solutions. He would you do the honors gladly?
- 24:19Speaker 3: Ellery. Our guest tonight is mister Gerald Moore, the prominent Wolf.
- 24:23Speaker 2: Thank you that night.
- 24:25Speaker 3: No, but it's true, Ellary. Mister Moore plays the title
- 24:28Speaker 3: role of the Lone Wolf in the Columbia picture series
- 24:31Speaker 3: It the same name.
- 24:32Speaker 2: Thanks for the explanation, Nikki. I hate to have anybody
- 24:34Speaker 2: get the wrong idea. I know radio microphones are known
- 24:38Speaker 2: new experience to you, Jerry, who also played the part
- 24:40Speaker 2: of Bill Lance and The Adventures of Bill Lance over
- 24:42Speaker 2: ABC every Sunday, don't. Yeah, that's right, Ellary. We do
- 24:44Speaker 2: our share of tracking down criminal too good. I suppose
- 24:48Speaker 2: you draw upon your experience as a clue chaser and
- 24:51Speaker 2: well it has to be done, and expose the killer
- 24:54Speaker 2: in tonight's mystery. Tell me now who killed the Mono brothers. Well,
- 24:58Speaker 2: your solution was incomplete. You seem alibying myself in advance.
- 25:01Speaker 2: I see, but my solution is not yet been offered.
- 25:03Speaker 2: And no, that's what I mean. I have two favorite suspects.
- 25:07Speaker 2: Tell me quickly, yeah, I have the butler and the
- 25:08Speaker 2: bellhave all right, Thank you very much, mister Oil. You'll
- 25:11Speaker 2: find out in just a moment if your solution is
- 25:13Speaker 2: the correct one. Now Here is Paul Masterson, Save wheat,
- 25:18Speaker 2: save meat, save the piece. This, in simple terms, is
- 25:22Speaker 2: the slogan adopted for the World Food Emergency campaign. We
- 25:25Speaker 2: little realize here in America the rather grave food crisis
- 25:28Speaker 2: and the majority of countries throughout the world, a world
- 25:31Speaker 2: food crisis that could easily precipitate another major conflict among
- 25:35Speaker 2: nations because the seeds of discontent our forerunners of intolerance
- 25:39Speaker 2: among nations, and are greatly influenced by hunger and malnutrition.
- 25:43Speaker 2: A healthy, properly educated nation breeds healthy, intelligent minds, minds
- 25:48Speaker 2: that work in unison for a better understanding of world
- 25:51Speaker 2: problems and world peace. Each individual in this great country
- 25:55Speaker 2: of ours is an integral part of the whole scheme
- 25:57Speaker 2: of things. Your responsibility now may avert an irresponsible act
- 26:01Speaker 2: in the future. Your part as an individual may seem
- 26:04Speaker 2: small and an adequate compared to the greatness of the
- 26:06Speaker 2: task ahead of us, But it is to you mister
- 26:09Speaker 2: and Missus America that a world struggling in the agonies
- 26:12Speaker 2: of hunger and despair looks for hope. Think over this slogan,
- 26:17Speaker 2: save wheat, save meat, save the peace, and you will
- 26:21Speaker 2: begin to realize the pressing need for food conservation at home,
- 26:25Speaker 2: a conservation that will help make world security a reality today. Logical. Now,
- 26:40Speaker 2: what do we know about those two hotel rooms involved
- 26:43Speaker 2: the room the killer checked into a Universal and Elias
- 26:45Speaker 2: Manna's room at the Haven. But we know that both
- 26:49Speaker 2: rooms are on the fourteenth floor of their respective hotels,
- 26:52Speaker 2: that their windows face each other across a narrow street.
- 26:54Speaker 2: In fact, that the killer's room commands a perfect view
- 26:57Speaker 2: of elias room, as you yourself pointed out there. Now,
- 27:00Speaker 2: could that have been chance accidental? Hardly? Obviously, the ideal
- 27:05Speaker 2: relation of these two hotel rooms to each other was
- 27:08Speaker 2: a planned element of the killer's plot, and that tells
- 27:11Speaker 2: us who the killer is. Not me though, well, that sergeant,
- 27:14Speaker 2: plus one other fact which room was hired first, the
- 27:19Speaker 2: killers are Elias Manas killer's registration can't indicate that he
- 27:22Speaker 2: checked into this room at the Universal two nights ago, and.
- 27:24Speaker 3: We saw Elias check into the Haven. This afternoon, Mallory.
- 27:27Speaker 2: So the killer's room was hired first. But if the
- 27:30Speaker 2: killer checked into this room two nights before Mana checked
- 27:33Speaker 2: into the one across the street, how could he know
- 27:36Speaker 2: in advance that Mana was going to draw a room
- 27:38Speaker 2: at the Haven on the corresponding floor, a room from
- 27:41Speaker 2: which Mana would be a perfect target. Sure, In other words,
- 27:44Speaker 2: how was the killer able to control Mana's getting room
- 27:47Speaker 2: fourteen oh nine in the Haven Hotel? Maybe he reserved
- 27:50Speaker 2: fourteen oh nine for Marna.
- 27:52Speaker 3: No he didn't, Sergeant, We actually heard Elias Manor asked
- 27:55Speaker 3: at the desk if a room had been reserved for him,
- 27:57Speaker 3: and the clerk said, now.
- 27:58Speaker 2: Man, if there was no reservation, it's in arcipal arry.
- 28:00Speaker 2: When a tranch and walks into a hotel, there's only
- 28:03Speaker 2: one person controls a room. We gave a man behind
- 28:05Speaker 2: a desk, a room clerk, scroll exactly. The room clerk
- 28:10Speaker 2: undoubtedly one of the ten thousand victims of the Monas swindle,
- 28:14Speaker 2: and the present repository of all that stolen money. Well,
- 28:18Speaker 2: it's another example of the folly of taking the law
- 28:20Speaker 2: into your own hands, and it's going to land mister
- 28:22Speaker 2: room clerk in the usual place, and there, ladies and gentlemen,
- 28:35Speaker 2: you have the solution to our mystery. Thank you again,
- 28:37Speaker 2: mister Gerald Moore for occupying our guest detective's armchair this evening,
- 28:41Speaker 2: And as mementos of the occasion, I have for you
- 28:43Speaker 2: a copy of my latest mystery anthology, The Queen's Awards
- 28:46Speaker 2: nineteen forty seven, and a subscription to Ellery Queen's Mystery magazine,
- 28:50Speaker 2: Ellery Don't Go Away. Huh oh, Paul, what's the matter? Uh?
- 28:54Speaker 2: I don't want to put you on the spot, fellow.
- 28:56Speaker 2: And maybe it's none of my business, but how long
- 28:59Speaker 2: is that young girl, Nicky Porter been your secretary? NICKI? Oh,
- 29:04Speaker 2: quite a while?
- 29:05Speaker 8: Paul.
- 29:05Speaker 2: Why maybe it's news to you, Ellerie, But I'm told
- 29:08Speaker 2: your friends out there are sort of worried, worried about
- 29:12Speaker 2: what about? What gives with you? And Nicky? So you
- 29:14Speaker 2: too don't seem to be getting anywhere? Oh oh, Nicky.
- 29:23Speaker 2: As a special favorite of Paul, Nikki, would you announce
- 29:26Speaker 2: the title of next week's case?
- 29:27Speaker 3: Oh?
- 29:28Speaker 4: Yes, next week, ladies and gentlemen, Ellery Queen presents the
- 29:32Speaker 4: case of.
- 29:35Speaker 3: Niki Porter.
- 29:37Speaker 2: Right, this is Ellery Queen saying good night until next
- 29:49Speaker 2: week and enlisting all Americans every night and every day
- 29:53Speaker 2: in the fight against bad citizenship, bigotry, and discrimination, the
- 29:57Speaker 2: crimes which are weakening America. All names used on this
- 30:10Speaker 2: program were fictitious and do not refer to real people,
- 30:13Speaker 2: either living or dead. Among the members of tonight's cast
- 30:16Speaker 2: were Larry Dobkin, Virginia Greg Alan, Red Herb Butterfield, Ruth Parrott,
- 30:22Speaker 2: Jack Lewis, Charlie Seal, Peter Leeds, Paul Freeze, and Janavello.
- 30:27Speaker 2: Music was by Rex Corey, direction by Dick Wollen. This
- 30:38Speaker 2: is ABC, the American Broadcasting Company.
- 30:49Speaker 9: This is Andrew Ryans with Otrwesterns dot com, where we
- 30:52Speaker 9: streamed live all time Radio Westerns twenty four hours a day,
- 30:55Speaker 9: seven days a week with a special twist. You select
- 31:00Speaker 9: that get.
- 31:00Speaker 2: To be played.
- 31:02Speaker 9: We've got a thousand different episodes from shows like Gunsmoke,
- 31:05Speaker 9: Tales of the Texas Rangers, Escape, Genautry, and many more.
- 31:09Speaker 9: Come check us out at OTR Westerns dot com slash
- 31:13Speaker 9: live again. That's OTR Westerns dot Com slash Live. You're
- 31:18Speaker 9: listening to the great detectives of old time radio with
- 31:20Speaker 9: Adam Graham and now let's get back into the show.
- 31:28Speaker 1: Welcome back. Well, there have been few murderers given less
- 31:32Speaker 1: characterization than mister room clerk. But in defense of the show,
- 31:36Speaker 1: when you have ten thousand suspects, it can be hard
- 31:39Speaker 1: to fully flash out every single one of them. And
- 31:43Speaker 1: I did find the concept and just the suspense of
- 31:46Speaker 1: the show as to what was going to happen interesting.
- 31:49Speaker 1: And I do find this whole format of the ABC
- 31:53Speaker 1: version very intriguing because we're not getting to find out
- 31:57Speaker 1: even the exact crime that we're being going to solve
- 32:00Speaker 1: at the beginning. Rather, the crime happens towards the end,
- 32:04Speaker 1: and we have to have been paying really close attention
- 32:07Speaker 1: to solve it, and certainly that is a challenge. Also,
- 32:11Speaker 1: I really hope listeners appreciated the easter egg of our
- 32:14Speaker 1: armchair detective as Gerald Moore. True, he didn't come up
- 32:18Speaker 1: with the right solution, but I doubt anyone would have.
- 32:21Speaker 1: Of course, Moore was known for the Lone Wolf films,
- 32:24Speaker 1: and he even did start in a Lone Wolf radio program,
- 32:28Speaker 1: though the episodes with him and the lead are missing.
- 32:30Speaker 1: We definitely do need to get around to the Lone
- 32:33Speaker 1: Wolf one of these days. Also, I wish we had
- 32:36Speaker 1: the program they played on December eleventh of nineteen forty
- 32:39Speaker 1: seven with Nicky Porter. I guess it was Virginia Gregg's
- 32:44Speaker 1: fate to play long suffering secretary slash wannabe love interest,
- 32:50Speaker 1: also playing a similar role with Brooksy in let George
- 32:54Speaker 1: do it, though Brooksy's a stronger character to be sure. Also,
- 32:58Speaker 1: I do want to let listeners know received some request
- 33:01Speaker 1: to be armchair detectives and I have those and I
- 33:05Speaker 1: will email you, hopefully the week before you're needed. I
- 33:09Speaker 1: know that we will need at least one more group,
- 33:13Speaker 1: and what we will do is I'll send out a
- 33:16Speaker 1: notification to everyone who has asked to be an armchair
- 33:21Speaker 1: detective and it'll basically be a first come, first serve
- 33:26Speaker 1: the top two. So watch your email. And now we
- 33:30Speaker 1: turn to listener comments and feedback. And we have this
- 33:32Speaker 1: from Lawrence, who writes, Lawrence Dopkin was such a staple
- 33:36Speaker 1: of old time radio. Indeed he was, Lawrence, And thanks
- 33:40Speaker 1: so much for the comments. All right, Well, that will
- 33:44Speaker 1: do it for today. We will be back tomorrow with
- 33:47Speaker 1: the Adventures of Philip Marlow, and then join us again
- 33:50Speaker 1: next Tuesday for another episode of Ellery Queen. In the meantime,
- 33:54Speaker 1: send your comments to Box thirteen at Great Attractives dot net,
- 33:58Speaker 1: follow us on Twitter at Radio Detectives, and become one
- 34:02Speaker 1: of our friends on Facebook, Facebook, dot com, Slash Radiodetectives
- 34:06Speaker 1: From Boise, Idaho, This is your host, Adam Grahamson and
- 34:10Speaker 1: Off
