- 0:39SPEAKER_05: Welcome in, everybody, to the Talk and Tech Podcast.
- 0:42SPEAKER_05: My name is Steven Rodriguez, my co-host Tristan McGonagall, and welcome in to a special bonus episode of the Talk and Tech Podcast.
- 0:50SPEAKER_05: This is going to be our second episode of this week.
- 0:53SPEAKER_05: We have our first interview actually coming with uh Kyle Umlang.
- 0:58SPEAKER_05: And he will be we're going to be talking about the upcoming UT game because he is a UT alum.
- 1:04SPEAKER_05: He's a big Twitter follower.
- 1:05SPEAKER_05: He's got about 12,000 followers on Twitter.
- 1:07SPEAKER_05: Big statistical analysis guy.
- 1:09SPEAKER_05: He's going to be great to talk to.
- 1:11SPEAKER_05: We're really excited about this.
- 1:13SPEAKER_05: But we wanted to open this bonus episode off on a couple key points coming in about Texas Tech since our last recording.
- 1:21SPEAKER_05: Had um a little concerning news, Tristan.
- 1:24SPEAKER_04: Yes, unfortunately, USA Today has uh published a yet another article um regarding our athletic department.
- 1:31SPEAKER_04: Our softball team seems to be under some scrutiny right now.
- 1:34SPEAKER_04: Uh the news appears to be that our head coach has departed from the program, and it may uh be in regards to allegations of uh perhaps abuse going on in the program.
- 1:45SPEAKER_04: Uh obviously not a good look after we just had the same thing going down with basketball.
- 1:50SPEAKER_04: But details are so murky right now.
- 1:52SPEAKER_04: I don't want to jump to any conclusions.
- 1:53SPEAKER_04: Um, but I just hope that we get a hold of this because it sounds like things are kind of getting a little out of hand, and I no one no one wants this.
- 2:01SPEAKER_04: What do you think?
- 2:01SPEAKER_05: Yeah, yeah, absolutely.
- 2:03SPEAKER_05: Nobody I mean, nobody likes to see this no matter what, and uh USA Today seems to be getting on to us recently.
- 2:09SPEAKER_05: But uh, you know, if there if uh allegations, obviously you you don't like to see those.
- 2:14SPEAKER_05: Uh, but you know, enough for the for the softball coach to step down.
- 2:19SPEAKER_05: So we'll see as the story progresses.
- 2:22SPEAKER_05: We'll probably give you some more info next week um because the article just came out, I believe, earlier today.
- 2:28SPEAKER_05: So uh we'll see how that progresses, but uh not not not good to see it no matter what.
- 2:34SPEAKER_04: No, sir.
- 2:34SPEAKER_04: And it's hopefully this is just Kirby Holka getting ahead of it uh and taking care of business and doing the right thing rather than uh another damage control situation.
- 2:43SPEAKER_05: Absolutely.
- 2:45SPEAKER_05: So uh moving on to our second bit of news, more happy news.
- 2:48SPEAKER_05: If you saw the Time 100 came out, the top 100 most influential people of 2020 came out, and two of your Red Raiders made the list, one of which being everybody's favorite, Patrick Mahomes.
- 3:02SPEAKER_05: You know, he's a quarterback you may know of.
- 3:04SPEAKER_05: Uh Super Bowl MVP, Texas Tech legend, awesome dude to have on the list.
- 3:08SPEAKER_05: Uh we had a few more athletes on there.
- 3:11SPEAKER_05: I saw like Dwayne Wade, Giannis Anta Tacumpo, those type of guys.
- 3:14SPEAKER_05: But uh cool to see, cool to see Patrick Mahomes make the list, man.
- 3:18SPEAKER_04: Absolutely.
- 3:19SPEAKER_04: Patrick Mahomes just seems like the salt of the earth kind of guy.
- 3:22SPEAKER_04: You know, he just seems like got such a good head on his shoulders, and we couldn't be more proud of the man he is and represents the university with such class.
- 3:29SPEAKER_04: So a well-deserved title to be given to him.
- 3:32SPEAKER_04: I hope this is the beginning of a uh long career on and off the field of of nothing but greatness.
- 3:38SPEAKER_04: So, and I know that's what it's gonna be.
- 3:39SPEAKER_04: He's gonna strive for honor evermore.
- 3:41SPEAKER_04: He's gonna bear our banners, and uh we're of course we're all excited to watch him continue down this path.
- 3:48SPEAKER_05: Yeah, and as we know, football is fantastic, but really our second, our second guy that made the list, uh the Air Force Chief of Staff, General Charles Q.
- 3:59SPEAKER_05: Brown Jr., um, you know, you can't get much better than that.
- 4:03SPEAKER_05: This guy represents everything you want in a university.
- 4:06SPEAKER_05: He's uh represents the nation as a whole, appointed by President Trump, uh first ever African American chief of military.
- 4:13SPEAKER_05: I mean, that it just unbelievable guy to represent the university and to represent our country.
- 4:19SPEAKER_05: It really doesn't get better than that.
- 4:21SPEAKER_04: To have the uh highest ranking officer in a military branch.
- 4:25SPEAKER_04: Uh, it's just incredible.
- 4:26SPEAKER_04: So he's he's a role model to all of us to uh to strive for greatness.
- 4:31SPEAKER_04: And he's the first African American to ever be the chief of staff.
- 4:34SPEAKER_04: So he's we're all just we got some red raiders out there making history, and you love to see it, especially when we're at this kind of level and that kind of prestige, um, serving his country, you know, and representing all of us with pride.
- 4:46SPEAKER_05: No doubt.
- 4:47SPEAKER_05: And I mean, two of these guys that uh probably in all of history are gonna go down as as some of the greatest red raiders of all time.
- 4:53SPEAKER_05: So seeing two of those guys make a make a list like the Time 100 is is super cool to see.
- 4:58SPEAKER_05: Uh just getting one of the guys from your university, and we have two of them.
- 5:02SPEAKER_05: So that's that's awesome.
- 5:03SPEAKER_05: That's awesome.
- 5:03SPEAKER_04: It's incredible.
- 5:04SPEAKER_04: Uh, it just you can't help but swell up with pride, honestly.
- 5:07SPEAKER_05: For sure.
- 5:08SPEAKER_05: No doubt, no doubt.
- 5:09SPEAKER_05: Um, and then our third piece of news uh baseball, Texas Tech Baseball, always great, always fun topic to to talk about with our boy Tim Tadlock, as you know in our abro.
- 5:18SPEAKER_05: Uh he he went on the podcast and told us we we did we do a great job, you know.
- 5:22SPEAKER_05: Just great guy to talk to.
- 5:24SPEAKER_05: No, no, no.
- 5:24SPEAKER_05: Of course, that was uh digitally uh uh changed a little bit.
- 5:30SPEAKER_05: No, it's shot, stop.
- 5:32SPEAKER_05: Just a little bit.
- 5:33SPEAKER_05: Not, I mean, you know, whatever.
- 5:36SPEAKER_05: But uh no, baseball number nine recruiting ranking uh for the upcoming 2021 season whenever they decide to play it.
- 5:43SPEAKER_05: Um, another great recruiting session for the Red Raiders, man.
- 5:47SPEAKER_04: Absolutely.
- 5:48SPEAKER_04: And apparently, this is the third time since 2015 that we've been ranked in the top 15 recruiting class according to uh perfect game.org, who uh made this ranking.
- 5:56SPEAKER_04: So if if we're gonna label one program on campus that is kind of in the makings of becoming a powerhouse, it's baseball.
- 6:05SPEAKER_05: I mean, just call it consistent because you without a doubt.
- 6:08SPEAKER_05: Really we're moving into blue blood status because we are good, and I mean really good every single year.
- 6:15SPEAKER_05: What Tim Tadlock has done with that program is unbelievable.
- 6:19SPEAKER_04: We're in the the spot where it's a disappointing season if we don't win the Big 12.
- 6:23SPEAKER_04: So that's that really says something about where the program is at.
- 6:27SPEAKER_04: And uh we're we're always expecting to go to Omaha now.
- 6:30SPEAKER_04: So it's such an incre Tim Tadlock hats off has done such an incredible job.
- 6:35SPEAKER_04: Um, and haha to the longhorns listening to this.
- 6:38SPEAKER_04: Uh, you couldn't get him.
- 6:39SPEAKER_04: Um even though you tried.
- 6:40SPEAKER_04: He's ours.
- 6:41SPEAKER_04: He's ours.
- 6:42SPEAKER_04: He's a red raider alum, so that makes it even cooler.
- 6:45SPEAKER_04: So hats off to Tim Tadlock and Josh Jung, man.
- 6:49SPEAKER_05: Oh yeah, Josh Jung.
- 6:51SPEAKER_05: It was announced that uh he hasn't been he hasn't been called up to the Rangers yet, but it looks like 2021 is gonna be the year they're they're gonna call him up.
- 6:59SPEAKER_05: And I mean, he was the number, I believe, number six pick in the draft uh in 2019.
- 7:05SPEAKER_05: And another guy, man, we another guy that's gonna be a big name in in professional sports, just give it some time because Josh Young is big time.
- 7:14SPEAKER_04: If you're a red raider, how darn cool is it to be drafted by either the Rangers or the Astros?
- 7:19SPEAKER_04: You know, it's gonna be it's gonna be awesome to see him uh wearing that Texas jersey um playing playing there in Dallas.
- 7:26SPEAKER_04: So super proud of him, yet another Red Raider to watch in the major leagues, who may become another superstar.
- 7:32SPEAKER_04: So really excited about that.
- 7:33SPEAKER_04: Uh, excited to watch his career expand.
- 7:35SPEAKER_05: No doubt.
- 7:36SPEAKER_05: Another piece of news.
- 7:37SPEAKER_05: Jordan Brooks just got named a starter uh for the Seattle Seahawks coming up in their game against the Cowboys.
- 7:43SPEAKER_05: Terrence Steele already starting for the Cowboys over there at the offensive line.
- 7:47SPEAKER_05: So gonna see a little Red Raider versus Red Raider action on uh on Sunday, which is awesome to see.
- 7:53SPEAKER_04: Very cool.
- 7:54SPEAKER_04: Uh love seeing our Red Raiders put compete in the NFL and uh in all the other leagues.
- 7:59SPEAKER_05: So and and represent and represent on the time 100, baby.
- 8:03SPEAKER_04: For sure.
- 8:03SPEAKER_04: So this was this was such a great intro into our episode here.
- 8:07SPEAKER_04: A lot of happiness uh being spread around.
- 8:09SPEAKER_04: But I'm really excited to get into our first interview.
- 8:11SPEAKER_05: Yeah, man, it's really cool.
- 8:12SPEAKER_05: Uh uh, we're happy to get uh Kyle on here to talk about the upcoming UT Tech game.
- 8:18SPEAKER_05: Uh he is a UT fan, so warning for the Red Raiders out here listening.
- 8:22SPEAKER_05: Uh, he's probably gonna give us uh a little bit of crap.
- 8:25SPEAKER_05: Uh he's he's a big statistical guy.
- 8:27SPEAKER_05: He knows it seems like he knows everything in the world.
- 8:29SPEAKER_05: So uh we're gonna talk, have a fun conversation with him, and uh get into it here in a second.
- 8:35SPEAKER_05: All right, y'all.
- 8:36SPEAKER_05: Stay tuned.
- 8:38SPEAKER_05: All right, so our first ever interview on the Talk and Tech Podcast.
- 8:42SPEAKER_05: We have our first guest.
- 8:43SPEAKER_05: His name is Kyle Umlang.
- 8:45SPEAKER_05: He is a data analysis, he is a graphic designer, he is a longhorn aficionado, and he's a Twitter celebrity, man.
- 8:53SPEAKER_05: 12,000 followers on that bad boy.
- 8:55SPEAKER_05: That's awesome, dude.
- 8:58SPEAKER_02: I worked hard for the no doubt, no doubt.
- 9:02SPEAKER_05: Uh so why don't you uh give us a little information on yourself, a little background.
- 9:06SPEAKER_02: So I'm a uh UT grad like 10 plus years ago.
- 9:11SPEAKER_02: I don't know how the time has flown by that fast.
- 9:14SPEAKER_02: Um yeah, I was there in in their their heyday, saw the national championship, saw almost another national championship.
- 9:23SPEAKER_02: Um just been really into stats, and uh my career is uh I'm a data analyst professionally, so and I'm trying to get my master's right now to be a data scientist.
- 9:35SPEAKER_02: So I I work a lot with with numbers and new software like R, Python.
- 9:39SPEAKER_02: I do a bunch of just stuff for work in school anyway, so and I'm obsessed with stats, so I was like, I might as well just do this for fun.
- 9:45SPEAKER_02: Well, since I have everything open, might as well just post on Twitter.
- 9:49SPEAKER_02: So I started posting like a year or so ago, and I just blew up.
- 9:52SPEAKER_02: So now that's basically what I do in my free time.
- 9:55SPEAKER_02: Yeah, what's the story behind that?
- 9:57SPEAKER_02: How did you explode like that?
- 9:59SPEAKER_02: There's like a there was like a Tableau conference that I went to and I got really into Tableau, and I started and I was like, oh, there's a whole community for like Tableau uh Vizes, which is which is what they call their visualizations visits.
- 10:12SPEAKER_02: So I was like, oh, I'll I'll start posting mine too.
- 10:14SPEAKER_02: I got a couple followers like, oh, this is this is neat.
- 10:16SPEAKER_02: And then I made a a Texas against AM like giant like dashboard and I posted and it it kind of went semi-viral and Sam Ellinger uh retweeted it, and I was like, oh crap, everyone loves this stuff.
- 10:29SPEAKER_02: And because like my other stuff, like no one, like I was doing all sorts of uh visas about all sorts of data, and no one really cared.
- 10:36SPEAKER_02: And but football, I got I got a bunch of new followers every time I posted it.
- 10:40SPEAKER_02: I was like, I'll just keep doing this.
- 10:41SPEAKER_02: So I just started doing that.
- 10:42SPEAKER_02: I started, I think, March 1st of 2019 was when I started.
- 10:46SPEAKER_02: I I started with 200 followers and now I got 12,000.
- 10:48SPEAKER_02: So it's people like it, so I'll keep doing it, I guess.
- 10:51SPEAKER_02: Holy cow, what a fast rise to fame!
- 10:54SPEAKER_05: Yeah, you're you're my nightmare when it comes to the Texas Tech Texas game every year because I've been I've been in so much pain the last few days with your stats.
- 11:02SPEAKER_05: You're killing me, dude.
- 11:04SPEAKER_05: This whole week has been terrible.
- 11:05SPEAKER_04: I was like, I can't believe we're bringing this guy on.
- 11:11SPEAKER_04: So what's what's the like what's um before we get going, what's your like longhorn story?
- 11:16SPEAKER_04: I mean, have you been a fan for life?
- 11:18SPEAKER_04: Did you start becoming a fan whenever you uh went to college?
- 11:20SPEAKER_04: What's the story behind there?
- 11:22SPEAKER_02: Um my mom's side of the family is all like longhorns, my dad's side is mostly Aggies.
- 11:28SPEAKER_02: Um, my dad was an Aggie.
- 11:30SPEAKER_02: Uh one of my brothers went to AM.
- 11:32SPEAKER_02: Uh my youngest brother and me, we both went to Texas, so it's it's it's been a really heated uh family rivalry for since since I've known football.
- 11:42SPEAKER_02: So it I've always loved knocking down the Aggies as much as possible.
- 11:46SPEAKER_02: So it comes naturally to me because I do it, I've been doing it for years just for fun.
- 11:50SPEAKER_02: So um, but yeah, I I've been watching football basically since I guess I guess 2000 is when I really got into it.
- 11:57SPEAKER_05: Well, it's I mean it's easy to do that when you have a national championship, you're at the school when you when you win something like that.
- 12:02SPEAKER_05: That's awesome.
- 12:03SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I I posted a couple months ago, I posted like the years I went, and people are like, oh man.
- 12:09SPEAKER_02: I I went from like 2012 to 2017.
- 12:13SPEAKER_02: Ugh.
- 12:15SPEAKER_02: Well, that's basically us.
- 12:18SPEAKER_05: We may be even even a little worse.
- 12:20SPEAKER_05: We started, we were uh we we went to 2018.
- 12:23SPEAKER_05: Yeah, 2014-18.
- 12:25SPEAKER_02: So uh man.
- 12:27SPEAKER_05: In the 2000s when they were no we're in the we're in the mud cliff.
- 12:34SPEAKER_05: It's been it's it's been a little rough uh during our time, but uh we still love them anyway.
- 12:40SPEAKER_05: But um why don't we just go ahead and transition into the upcoming game this Saturday, 230 on Fox?
- 12:46SPEAKER_05: Uh it's it's the biggest game of the year uh for us for Texas Tech fans.
- 12:50SPEAKER_05: We love playing UT.
- 12:52SPEAKER_05: We love to beat UT.
- 12:53SPEAKER_05: It doesn't happen often, but when it does happen, it's great.
- 12:56SPEAKER_05: So um, well, Kyle, why don't why don't you kind of get into uh Texas's strong points and uh you know going into this game?
- 13:04SPEAKER_05: What's what's gonna be the difference in the game here?
- 13:07SPEAKER_02: Okay, well, first difference the crowd.
- 13:11SPEAKER_02: Y'all I hate going to Love It.
- 13:14SPEAKER_02: I hate it.
- 13:14SPEAKER_02: Y'all's crowd is nasty, they're wild, they're crazy, they throw tortillas.
- 13:18SPEAKER_02: I still don't know why.
- 13:20SPEAKER_02: But sometimes batteries I've heard, I don't know.
- 13:23SPEAKER_02: I don't know if that's it might be wrong.
- 13:24SPEAKER_05: Batteries batteries, that's that's fake, that's fake news.
- 13:28SPEAKER_04: Okay, batteries who's who's walking around with like boom boxes and Game Boys.
- 13:32SPEAKER_04: That's what I'm wondering.
- 13:32SPEAKER_04: Like, where are they ganking these things out of?
- 13:36SPEAKER_02: So so yeah, so the crowd right there, it's gonna be like 15k.
- 13:41SPEAKER_02: The lowest that stadium has seen since 1947 is 27,000.
- 13:45SPEAKER_02: So that right there is gonna silence I think which is y'all's strongest uh selling point for winning is the crowd.
- 13:52SPEAKER_02: So take out the crowd.
- 13:54SPEAKER_02: I don't know.
- 13:55SPEAKER_02: I I don't I don't give you a chance, but not counting the crowd.
- 13:58SPEAKER_02: Texas coming with a 17-point favorite.
- 14:00SPEAKER_02: Uh it's the biggest point spread they've had in Lubbock ever.
- 14:04SPEAKER_02: So that's impressive.
- 14:07SPEAKER_05: And it's a f it's a fair spread, you know, especially with how how we performed, you know, two weeks ago and how y'all performed two weeks ago, you know.
- 14:14SPEAKER_05: I understand.
- 14:14SPEAKER_02: And you you throw in the mix of of COVID, not letting anyone practice that often.
- 14:19SPEAKER_02: It's gonna be sloppy.
- 14:21SPEAKER_02: You know, I mean, uh who knows who's gonna be out by the game by game time.
- 14:25SPEAKER_02: But they're they're they're flying the joke is they're flying Elagar on a private jet to get him into safety without any any virus.
- 14:33SPEAKER_02: Um let's see, uh star running back got arrested.
- 14:39SPEAKER_05: He's gonna play, it looks like though.
- 14:42SPEAKER_02: I was worried he would not be able to play, but I was gonna say if he's not able to play, that'd be a big factor.
- 14:48SPEAKER_02: But and then the biggest bullet point is Sam Ellinger.
- 14:51SPEAKER_02: He's he's on a revenge tour, he has nothing to lose, everything to gain.
- 14:55SPEAKER_02: He this this is kind of like a you know, when like uh someone jumps off sides and it's a free play.
- 15:01SPEAKER_02: This year is like a free season for him, basically.
- 15:03SPEAKER_02: He's just gonna we don't know how long we're gonna be playing.
- 15:06SPEAKER_02: It could be three more games and the season's canceled, so he's just gonna go, he's gonna go ham ellinger the whole game.
- 15:12SPEAKER_05: So ham elinger.
- 15:13SPEAKER_02: I went over that one yet.
- 15:14SPEAKER_05: Yeah, man.
- 15:15SPEAKER_05: I mean, he's uh he's he's definitely looking good to start, and he and he had a good season last year.
- 15:20SPEAKER_05: He's two and one against uh against Texas Tech as as a starter.
- 15:24SPEAKER_05: So he knows he knows what it's like to lose to Tech, and I'm sure he doesn't want to do that again.
- 15:29SPEAKER_05: Uh hasn't lost, he hasn't lost in Lovick, though.
- 15:32SPEAKER_05: Uh so he's he's he's winning and that's that's a whole different kind of pain.
- 15:36SPEAKER_05: Yeah, yeah, that's true.
- 15:38SPEAKER_05: That's true.
- 15:39SPEAKER_05: Um but yeah, man, that that that quarterback y'all got over there is uh he's pretty decent, I'd say.
- 15:45SPEAKER_05: But you you have a you have a lot of different skill position guys this year.
- 15:49SPEAKER_02: Yeah, um we have um a bunch of a bunch of great secondary, uh so great that five-star starters are not getting the starting plays that they want because we have talent.
- 16:02SPEAKER_02: So um I think I think we had interception last week.
- 16:07SPEAKER_02: It's it's UTEP, but I think there will be more uh on Saturday.
- 16:12SPEAKER_02: I wanted to talk a little bit about the chances of of tech having a having a shot at winning.
- 16:18SPEAKER_02: Sure.
- 16:18SPEAKER_05: Hey man, I'm uh we're all about optimism here.
- 16:20SPEAKER_02: We're not gonna spot and I have been very very surprised many times.
- 16:28SPEAKER_02: So it's college football, it's a rivalry, anything can happen.
- 16:33SPEAKER_02: So I was gonna say that um I rewatched the Houston Baptist game, and y'all's victory was clenched with two red zone turnovers.
- 16:44SPEAKER_02: Lots of turnovers on Saturday.
- 16:46SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 16:47SPEAKER_02: Uh have a chance.
- 16:49SPEAKER_02: Um, I think y'all were plus one turnover margin at home last year.
- 16:53SPEAKER_02: Not that good.
- 16:54SPEAKER_05: No, but we and we lost our biggest turnover getter.
- 16:57SPEAKER_05: I mean, uh uh Douglas Coleman had I don't know, I think he had about eight interceptions or something, something ridiculous.
- 17:03SPEAKER_05: And so he's he's not here anymore.
- 17:05SPEAKER_05: Our secondary looks weak to start, but uh I think it all starts with getting pressure on Ellinger.
- 17:11SPEAKER_05: We didn't have a lot of pressure on uh on Houston Baptists uh two weeks ago.
- 17:15SPEAKER_05: And if we can get to Ellinger, he's he's not rattled often, but if we can get him you know out of his groove early, I think there's a chance uh that we can get a couple turnovers here or there.
- 17:27SPEAKER_02: Sam Ellinger.
- 17:28SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 17:29SPEAKER_02: Last year, where he had more than three sacks, we lost.
- 17:33SPEAKER_02: Every time he got sacked one or three times, it was an automatic loss.
- 17:36SPEAKER_02: He he does not do well uh when there's when he has two seconds to throw it.
- 17:41SPEAKER_02: Um I mean get some turnovers, control the clock, long methodical drives that just eat up that clock.
- 17:51SPEAKER_02: It's possible.
- 17:52SPEAKER_02: I'm not gonna say it's impossible.
- 17:54SPEAKER_02: We're not you know, you're not you're not a you're not a UTEP, you're not an FCS team.
- 17:58SPEAKER_02: You're you're Texas Tech in level, which is frightening.
- 18:02SPEAKER_05: So yeah, that's uh that's true.
- 18:04SPEAKER_05: But uh you're right.
- 18:05SPEAKER_05: I want to talk a little about your running back core because y'all didn't have to really utilize it much against UTEP because you know it's they scored in three plays.
- 18:15SPEAKER_05: But um those two is it kind of a double is it kind of a double-edged sword there with uh with uh Rashawn Johnson and uh Keontae Ingram there, or is it kind of one is over the other?
- 18:26SPEAKER_02: Um I mean Ingram has more experience, but I I I would put them as like I I wouldn't I wouldn't prefer one over the other on a certain situation.
- 18:38SPEAKER_02: I think they're both great.
- 18:39SPEAKER_02: I I I really want um B John though to get some snaps in.
- 18:44SPEAKER_02: I think he only got five carries in UTEP, and he's the best running back in the nation in his.
- 18:50SPEAKER_02: I really want him to get some snaps this game.
- 18:53SPEAKER_02: So hopefully we can get ahead early in the first quarter and start seeing some snaps.
- 18:58SPEAKER_02: But um yeah, I I think last year our running game was pretty destroyed uh by the first by the first or second game.
- 19:06SPEAKER_02: And this year I think we're pretty stacked.
- 19:07SPEAKER_02: So I think I think Ellen Gor has lots of options if uh if he needs it.
- 19:12SPEAKER_05: Yeah, no doubt, no doubt.
- 19:14SPEAKER_05: Um well we'll see, we'll see how it ends up.
- 19:17SPEAKER_05: Um it it's it's not looking fantastic for uh the Red Raiders uh to start the season, but uh you you really don't know how good UT is yet because UTEP is is such a weird opponent, you know.
- 19:31SPEAKER_02: FCS wins, and that's it.
- 19:33SPEAKER_05: Yeah, yeah.
- 19:34SPEAKER_05: And they were tight FCS wins.
- 19:35SPEAKER_05: And I'm not, you know, I'm saying that like we just killed at FCS team, but uh FCS wins.
- 19:42SPEAKER_04: Yeah, yeah.
- 19:43SPEAKER_04: I think something to kind of uh look forward to uh out of the red on the Red Raider side is you know, there's a huge there's you can hopefully see huge sleep between week one and week two, especially during these weird COVID times.
- 19:54SPEAKER_04: You know, practice has been a mess.
- 19:56SPEAKER_04: You know, players have been missing because we've had a we've had a ton of players test positive.
- 20:00SPEAKER_04: So uh who knows how big of the unit chunks that we've been missing, you know, have been missing the practice.
- 20:05SPEAKER_04: So I think that really showed in the Houston Baptist game.
- 20:07SPEAKER_04: So I'm really hoping the in the in the time between the two of them here that uh we really you know got it got our boys back on the field and got got got their minds right because it looked like they were lost out there last last game.
- 20:18SPEAKER_05: We we had to start a lot of uh uh uh sophomore bat defensive backs, and we those three guys were were pretty just terrible last game.
- 20:27SPEAKER_05: I mean, I looked it over and those we gave up a ton of big yardage plays, and I know we have a we have a couple guys coming back.
- 20:34SPEAKER_05: It looks like we tested we didn't have anybody test positive for COVID for this week, so uh that's just good news in and of itself.
- 20:41SPEAKER_05: But uh for the game, you know, uh hopefully we'll have our whole team back on the field.
- 20:46SPEAKER_02: I really I I'm not even like worried about who we're playing or or how good we're supposed to be or anything.
- 20:53SPEAKER_02: I just want to play the games.
- 20:55SPEAKER_02: So I I I I will not be like calm and excited until like the kickoff happens because I'm like, what like I don't want to get canceled.
- 21:03SPEAKER_02: Freaking Houston canceled.
- 21:05SPEAKER_02: Yeah, we bro.
- 21:06SPEAKER_02: Baylor still hasn't played yet.
- 21:08SPEAKER_02: Uh TC hasn't played, it's it's it's pretty crazy.
- 21:11SPEAKER_05: Yeah, it's been a mess of a season, but uh you know, hopefully everything turns out okay, and then we kind of continue this this upward spike of no no positive results and and all that kind of stuff uh for the coming weeks.
- 21:24SPEAKER_05: But um, well, Kyle, man, why don't we why don't you go ahead and give me your score prediction for this Saturday's game?
- 21:29SPEAKER_02: I don't know if you'll like it though.
- 21:31SPEAKER_05: I I know I'm not gonna like it, but I want to hear it anyway because uh pain fuels me, you know.
- 21:38SPEAKER_02: You're gonna you're gonna really love this one then.
- 21:40SPEAKER_02: Uh I'm gonna say Texas 45, Texas Tech 17.
- 21:45SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 21:45SPEAKER_05: That you know, I think that's actually pretty fair uh from a Longhorn fan's perspective.
- 21:51SPEAKER_05: Um we have to be optimistic because we are Texas Tech fans.
- 21:55SPEAKER_05: And we uh you know, the thing about this game is we always get hyped up for it, no matter if we we could be You know, a four-win team.
- 22:01SPEAKER_05: We could be a two-win team, which we might be a two-win team this year.
- 22:04SPEAKER_05: But we're we're always gonna be hyped up for the UT game.
- 22:07SPEAKER_05: It's it's the biggest game of the year for Texas Tech fans, for the players.
- 22:12SPEAKER_02: I've learned that being the underdog is so much more fun.
- 22:15SPEAKER_02: It is.
- 22:16SPEAKER_02: There's way more pressure on Texas than there is on Tech.
- 22:19SPEAKER_02: You just go out and have fun.
- 22:20SPEAKER_02: Go out and have fun, guys.
- 22:21SPEAKER_02: Go, go, go win the game.
- 22:24unknown: Yeah.
- 22:24SPEAKER_02: Enjoy yourself.
- 22:25SPEAKER_02: Like Tom Herman won't be saying that.
- 22:27SPEAKER_02: He'll be freaking out if anything goes wrong.
- 22:29SPEAKER_02: And I I would rather be in um the underdog.
- 22:32SPEAKER_02: I I love being the underdog.
- 22:34SPEAKER_05: Well, Tristan, you had you had something on Tom Herman you wanted to ask.
- 22:37SPEAKER_04: I did actually.
- 22:38SPEAKER_04: So um a Tom Herman kind of did a did a staff clearing recently, and uh obviously he's kind of looking for that reset on the program.
- 22:47SPEAKER_04: Um he he's been there for a while now, and uh obviously, you know, at UT that the expectation for football is extremely high.
- 22:54SPEAKER_04: Like you're obviously looking for Big 12 titles nearly every year.
- 22:58SPEAKER_04: Um how is his seat looking right now, you think?
- 23:02SPEAKER_04: Like where would you what temperature gauge would you give it right now?
- 23:04SPEAKER_04: Obviously, the season's a wash, right?
- 23:06SPEAKER_04: Um, but no matter what.
- 23:08SPEAKER_04: But if if things don't go as expected this season, um and so forth, how how do you feel about his seat right now going forward?
- 23:17SPEAKER_02: Seat is I think it's normal right now.
- 23:20SPEAKER_02: Normal.
- 23:20SPEAKER_02: It's nowhere near Charlie Strong temperature.
- 23:23SPEAKER_05: I don't a scale of cold to shock of smart, where are you gonna put it at?
- 23:30SPEAKER_02: Put it right in the middle.
- 23:31SPEAKER_02: It's something catastrophic would have to happen this season for it to raise in temperature because, like you said, it's a wash season.
- 23:38SPEAKER_02: We who knows?
- 23:39SPEAKER_02: We might we might just play five games.
- 23:40SPEAKER_02: Who knows?
- 23:41SPEAKER_02: He'll probably win four of them.
- 23:42SPEAKER_02: You know, he would have to lose like the rest of the games for it to be hot, you know.
- 23:48SPEAKER_02: It and then and that's not gonna happen.
- 23:49SPEAKER_02: Um but I I have I have learned that each head coach gets one like coordinator reset button, and he hit it last year, he had fresh new staff, so there's no second fresh new staff for him.
- 24:04SPEAKER_02: So he'll have to use this staff as best as you can.
- 24:08SPEAKER_02: And but I I think I think I think he's fine right now.
- 24:11SPEAKER_02: Um I besides like the Baylor game last year and maybe one other game, I think all of his losses have been by like a possession.
- 24:22SPEAKER_05: It's nothing, it's not it's there's no blowouts, there's no well, there was a Kansas scare, but yeah, God, he's he's won he's won a sugar bowl.
- 24:33SPEAKER_05: So like you know, he's done some good stuff already.
- 24:36SPEAKER_02: It's like his like his second game of the of his career at Texas, he had to go and play ranked USC in in the Coliseum, and that he I mean almost pulled it off.
- 24:48SPEAKER_05: Well, and he almost pulled off a a win against uh, you know, who who who won the national championship last year?
- 24:54SPEAKER_02: Uh uh we have a 90% 92% red zone uh uh conversion rate, but we missed two sets of four downs in a row in at like the 10-yard line against LSU.
- 25:09SPEAKER_02: Wow.
- 25:09SPEAKER_05: Yeah, that game was crazy.
- 25:11SPEAKER_05: That was a fun game to watch.
- 25:12SPEAKER_02: Was and he he he does he does like the the higher the stakes the game, the bigger the opponent, the better he does.
- 25:20SPEAKER_02: So it's game it's trap games like like Texas Tech, or like if I mean we we play Oklahoma State at uh Billwater in uh on Halloween.
- 25:30SPEAKER_02: That that that's a nightmare.
- 25:35SPEAKER_05: See, this is a this is the thing.
- 25:36SPEAKER_05: We played Oklahoma State a few years ago on Halloween, and we didn't choose to do black and orange uniforms.
- 25:42SPEAKER_05: It was super upsetting.
- 25:43SPEAKER_05: We it was like red and white.
- 25:44SPEAKER_05: It was stupid.
- 25:45SPEAKER_05: So y'all have the chance now because you got two orange teams, one's gotta wear orange and the other one's gotta wear white or black.
- 25:51SPEAKER_05: It's gotta happen.
- 25:51SPEAKER_02: Um, yeah, I mean, he's fine.
- 25:54SPEAKER_02: He's not going anywhere for a while.
- 25:56SPEAKER_02: Something catastrophic like Charlie Strong with Kansas would have to happen for him to be gone.
- 26:01SPEAKER_02: And I don't see that happening.
- 26:03SPEAKER_04: Awesome, man.
- 26:04SPEAKER_04: Uh uh great answer.
- 26:05SPEAKER_04: Uh, I could definitely feel where you're coming from there.
- 26:07SPEAKER_04: Uh Steve and I were just talking about it.
- 26:09SPEAKER_04: Obviously, I mean, this is only year two.
- 26:11SPEAKER_04: Um, but I at Texas Tech, I mean, you obviously hire coaches to compete and beat Texas because I mean that's such a big deal in Lubbock.
- 26:20SPEAKER_04: Um, so I think if we get blown out tomorrow, I think eyebrows will start to raise around the fan base already.
- 26:26SPEAKER_04: Because I mean, we're uh it's been a long run of bad.
- 26:29SPEAKER_04: So I think we're getting a little impatient.
- 26:31SPEAKER_04: But I mean, I'm not saying anyone's getting fired this season.
- 26:34SPEAKER_04: I just think the the light starts to light up a bit.
- 26:36SPEAKER_04: I mean, the heat kind of turns up a bit if we get blown out on Saturday.
- 26:40SPEAKER_04: Um, but that's that's I just that's kind of what popped in my mind.
- 26:43SPEAKER_04: So I just wanted to hear what uh UT had to feel about their coach.
- 26:46unknown: Yeah.
- 26:47SPEAKER_05: Yeah, no doubt.
- 26:48SPEAKER_05: Well, you know, we want to do a little fun thing.
- 26:51SPEAKER_05: We're gonna do uh we got a UT fan here.
- 26:53SPEAKER_05: We got a couple Texas Tech fans here.
- 26:55SPEAKER_05: We're gonna talk about our favorite moments from this rivalry game, from this UT Texas Tech series.
- 27:01SPEAKER_05: You know, Kyle, what what's your favorite UT moment against Texas Tech?
- 27:05SPEAKER_02: I mean, it's not a popular one.
- 27:07SPEAKER_02: It's it's also my worst memory, but that 2008 game is it will I still like watching it.
- 27:16SPEAKER_02: I mean, up until the end, but I'm just like games like that only come only happen like once every like 30, 40 years.
- 27:23SPEAKER_02: Like we're never we probably will never have another game between us like that.
- 27:27SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I I I love that kind of stuff.
- 27:29SPEAKER_02: I I wish we would have won.
- 27:32SPEAKER_02: I I mean Crabtree haunts my my mind.
- 27:36SPEAKER_02: His name might get upset, I have a bad day.
- 27:39SPEAKER_02: But I mean it's it's not a it's not a rivalry, it's not a great game unless something like that happens to one of the one of the teams.
- 27:46SPEAKER_02: You know, like I I I've talked to a bunch of USC people.
- 27:49SPEAKER_02: They they hate that game, they don't want to talk about the game, but it's a it's the it's a great game.
- 27:55SPEAKER_05: I mean it's probably it's probably top ten in college football.
- 27:58SPEAKER_05: I mean, honestly.
- 27:59SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it's it's I have it in my top ten.
- 28:01SPEAKER_02: It it's a great game.
- 28:03SPEAKER_02: Almost won, should have won.
- 28:05SPEAKER_02: Can't believe we didn't win, but it happened.
- 28:08SPEAKER_02: It will go down in history as a great game, so I will have to uh tip my hat to Rederators for that one.
- 28:17SPEAKER_05: So that's your that's your best and and least that's your favorite and least favorite moment?
- 28:22SPEAKER_02: And my least favorite game.
- 28:24SPEAKER_02: But I mean, I I don't mind uh when we blew it out of the water last year.
- 28:28SPEAKER_02: Or you know, this this didn't heal the Crabgy Rune at in at all, but it was like placing a little band-aid when when Lil Jordan Hunt uh Humphrey won won the game Crabgy Corner and they interviewed him after the game and he said that's the LJ corner now.
- 28:47SPEAKER_02: Like that.
- 28:49SPEAKER_02: No no no.
- 28:50SPEAKER_02: But it wasn't a high-six game in any way, it didn't matter.
- 28:56SPEAKER_02: So it like I said, it was like putting a little band-aid on the wound, but that that that was a fun moment for me.
- 29:01SPEAKER_04: Yeah, it's it's fun that you brought up 08 because uh during our game Saturday, they're gonna be uh inducting Michael Crabtree in the Texas Tech Ring of Honor.
- 29:10SPEAKER_04: Um so they're gonna be not that game that game in Lubbock.
- 29:17SPEAKER_02: It's it's gotta be some magic.
- 29:19SPEAKER_02: Like a year ago, and like let's save it for 2020.
- 29:22SPEAKER_05: They have to do it when UT's coming.
- 29:24SPEAKER_05: You knew that was gonna happen.
- 29:26SPEAKER_05: But um, yeah, man, Tristan, why why don't you give me your your favorite and your least favorite moments of this rivalry?
- 29:33SPEAKER_04: I mean, favorite, uh I'm gonna have to go with one where we were students.
- 29:37SPEAKER_04: Uh it was 2015.
- 29:38SPEAKER_04: Patrick Mahomes going to Austin, Texas.
- 29:41SPEAKER_04: Uh just an awesome game.
- 29:43SPEAKER_04: Um, I unfortunately wasn't there.
- 29:45SPEAKER_04: My girlfriend was.
- 29:46SPEAKER_04: Um, but uh I was with my uncle, my UT alum uncle, and so we were watching it the whole game, and it was it was really great back and forth.
- 29:54SPEAKER_04: Um, and it was a game to the end, you know, Jakeem Grant, DeAndre Washington, um, and Cliff made history.
- 30:00SPEAKER_04: He's one of uh only three coaches to win in Austin as a Texas Tech football coach, um, and one of only two Texas Tech football coaches to uh win twice in Austin.
- 30:10SPEAKER_04: So as bad as uh Cliff was, unfortunately, at tech, he uh he actually he for some reason knew how to win Austin.
- 30:16SPEAKER_05: But yeah, he put he pulled out a couple of uh UT wins.
- 30:19SPEAKER_05: But uh Jakeem had the famous play there where he kind of the fumble roosky sort of deal where he hit you know he was only five foot six or whatever, so he goes in a little sneaky uh behind the behind the lineman and they they make that play.
- 30:33SPEAKER_05: But also that was the game where Chris Warren went absolutely nuts on us.
- 30:38SPEAKER_05: I mean, he was like the third string running back going into that game for Texas, and he just went nuts.
- 30:44SPEAKER_05: He had like 290 rushing yards, four touchdowns.
- 30:49SPEAKER_02: What year was that one?
- 30:50SPEAKER_02: 2015.
- 30:52SPEAKER_05: Yeah, and it was like because I think y'all had two running backs that were hurt for that game, and so Warren kind of came in and he just torched us.
- 31:01SPEAKER_02: Yeah, he ended up.
- 31:03SPEAKER_02: I don't know what year he won the dope walker, but it was around that time.
- 31:07SPEAKER_05: So yeah, yeah, he was yeah, it was nuts.
- 31:12SPEAKER_05: That was that was a fun game.
- 31:13SPEAKER_05: I think it was like a 48-45 finish or something like that, and it was it was cool.
- 31:18SPEAKER_02: One thing I do like about playing y'all is it's I mean, not kind of last year, or it's it's usually it's usually pretty close, which I I I don't care who we play, but if it's a close, fun game, like I I enjoy those games.
- 31:30SPEAKER_02: I I don't like blowouts.
- 31:31SPEAKER_02: No one yeah people like Oklahoma likes beating FCS teams by 80 points.
- 31:36SPEAKER_02: I I don't find that fun.
- 31:37SPEAKER_02: I like it.
- 31:38SPEAKER_02: I like the ones where we we pull it off in the end.
- 31:41SPEAKER_05: Yeah, you I mean you gotta give UT credit for always scheduling good opponents in the non-conference.
- 31:46SPEAKER_05: I mean they're really jealous, yeah.
- 31:48SPEAKER_05: USC, Notre Dame, you know, LSU, those type of games.
- 31:51SPEAKER_05: That's awesome.
- 31:52SPEAKER_02: Florida, Georgia, yeah, yeah.
- 31:55SPEAKER_04: Oh state, all of those.
- 31:56SPEAKER_05: Yeah, that's awesome.
- 31:58SPEAKER_04: And never FCS either.
- 31:59SPEAKER_04: So that's never that's really awesome.
- 32:01SPEAKER_04: Definitely jealous of that.
- 32:02SPEAKER_02: I I know a lot of schools don't have the choice to to choose non-fcs, but I will I will make it my goal till I die to can't to get rid of playing FCS teams if you're in the FCS.
- 32:13SPEAKER_05: I I'm I'm right there with you, dude.
- 32:15SPEAKER_05: I they're just not like, and besides this Houston Baptist game, I mean every FCS opponent we we usually murder, so it's like I mean it's it's very rare when they when they win.
- 32:24SPEAKER_02: I think it's happening times the last 15 years, it's something crazy like that.
- 32:30SPEAKER_02: It never happens.
- 32:31SPEAKER_02: So I I know they get a lot of money and helps fund their schools, but there's gotta be a different way.
- 32:36SPEAKER_05: I there's and they're just they're just no fun, especially if you're like vi on, you know, Texas Tech isn't in the position, but Texas may be this year into a position for the college football playoff.
- 32:45SPEAKER_05: They're gonna look at that FCS game and be like, okay, you know, that's a you know, they only really had two non-conference, and in this COVID weird, weird year, one non-conference.
- 32:54SPEAKER_05: So try to get some good opponents for that.
- 32:57SPEAKER_05: But um, yeah, I guess I'll put my favorite is 2017 when we went to Austin.
- 33:03SPEAKER_05: Um, and and we only won five games that year, but that was the fifth win, and that was really the game that that kept Cliff here for another year.
- 33:12SPEAKER_05: I think if we if we lost that game, he would have been done.
- 33:15SPEAKER_05: But 2017, we weren't expecting anything.
- 33:18SPEAKER_05: And then we go into Austin.
- 33:19SPEAKER_05: Shimonek, our quarterback all year, gets benched and comes in in the final minutes because McLean Carter was garbage.
- 33:28SPEAKER_05: You know, he threw an interception.
- 33:30SPEAKER_05: I think he was kind of hurt, but uh Shimonek, man, he came in and through that last touchdown.
- 33:35SPEAKER_05: That was awesome.
- 33:36SPEAKER_02: Well, was that the one like right after Thanksgiving, or the Friday after Thanksgiving?
- 33:40SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I think so because I remember it was the last game of the last game of the Big 12 season.
- 33:44SPEAKER_02: I was so frigging angry.
- 33:48SPEAKER_02: I was watching that at home with my brother, and I I was the entire time.
- 33:52SPEAKER_02: I was like, this come on, Tom Herman, we did not hire you to do this, and it was oh yeah, it was real and then we turned around and had an awful season.
- 34:02SPEAKER_02: So yeah, and that was you know 11 and 1 Oklahoma.
- 34:09SPEAKER_02: I mean, that's fine, they're 11 and 1.
- 34:11SPEAKER_02: When when a team comes like that, it really upset, it really upsets me.
- 34:16SPEAKER_05: I hate it.
- 34:16SPEAKER_05: Yeah, yeah, that was the first year of Tom Hermit.
- 34:19SPEAKER_05: We were like, we were like, okay, yeah, we beat him.
- 34:21SPEAKER_05: We're one and oh against Tom Herman.
- 34:23SPEAKER_05: But uh, but yeah, that was that was a cool game.
- 34:26SPEAKER_05: Um I y'all had it too.
- 34:29SPEAKER_05: Y'all really had it because it was like the final minutes, and then Ellinger threw that pick to uh to Justice Parker, and he ran almost ran back for a touchdown.
- 34:36SPEAKER_05: But once Shimonek came in the game, clenched it and it said we got a pick.
- 34:40SPEAKER_02: Cool.
- 34:41SPEAKER_05: Yeah, yeah.
- 34:42SPEAKER_05: Yep.
- 34:43SPEAKER_05: I was so upset.
- 34:44SPEAKER_05: I was like, the way we were so close, and then all of a sudden, out of nowhere, interception, bring it back.
- 34:49SPEAKER_04: But uh that was my nick Shimonek was like running out of time coach.
- 34:53SPEAKER_04: That was like the the quote.
- 34:54SPEAKER_04: It'll run out of time coach.
- 34:55SPEAKER_04: So it's just kind of a cool moment movie moment.
- 34:57SPEAKER_04: So that's a good one, Steven.
- 34:58SPEAKER_05: Yeah, no doubt.
- 35:00SPEAKER_05: But um, you know, I think that's it for Texas Tech UT.
- 35:03SPEAKER_05: It's it's gonna be fun no matter what.
- 35:05SPEAKER_05: It's always it's a fun rivalry.
- 35:06SPEAKER_05: It's yeah, two state schools, two Texas state schools.
- 35:10SPEAKER_05: Tristan mentioned on our pod uh that came out a few days ago that this is like the last big rivalry between Texas state schools, you know.
- 35:18SPEAKER_05: AM leaving for the SEC, it's like, okay, it's it's us two.
- 35:22SPEAKER_05: You know, we we we play Baylor and TCU, but none of us, you know, give them the credit.
- 35:26SPEAKER_05: They they don't deserve anything.
- 35:28SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 35:30SPEAKER_04: And we're actually competing for the same thing now.
- 35:32SPEAKER_04: I mean, obviously we'll uh we'll all have that rivalry with AM off the off the field kind of thing, but uh they they're just we're not competing for the same things anymore unless they meet me in the playoff or a bowl.
- 35:41SPEAKER_04: But uh this that's just what's so fun about the the sport, and uh I like keeping that tradition alive.
- 35:47SPEAKER_02: I love I love playing them.
- 35:49SPEAKER_05: I love yeah, and y'all been y'all been playing them recently in basketball, right?
- 35:53SPEAKER_02: Y'all y'all been playing a couple games last year and maybe the year before, something like that.
- 35:58SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 35:58SPEAKER_05: Well, partially part of the reason we brought you on here is because we're all friends at this moment.
- 36:04SPEAKER_05: We need some AM slander.
- 36:06SPEAKER_05: That's what we need.
- 36:07SPEAKER_05: We need the stats to show how bad AM is.
- 36:17SPEAKER_05: Absolutely.
- 36:18SPEAKER_05: So give us a few, man.
- 36:19SPEAKER_05: Give it give us a few stats that just show how bad AM is.
- 36:23SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 36:24SPEAKER_02: Uh Texas Tech went 10-6, which is uh 63% win percentage against Texas AM during their time in the Big 12.
- 36:33SPEAKER_02: The only teams the Aggies have a better coverage record against in the SEC are Arkansas, South Carolina, Vanderbilt, Kentucky, and one game they won against Tennessee.
- 36:46SPEAKER_02: That's it.
- 36:47SPEAKER_02: No the the like one of the five worst teams basically in SEC are the only ones that they've done what you did to them while they're in the Big 12.
- 36:57SPEAKER_05: Yeah, right on.
- 36:58SPEAKER_04: Yeah, we're better.
- 36:59SPEAKER_05: We're better.
- 37:00SPEAKER_04: We're better.
- 37:01SPEAKER_04: Uh that's that.
- 37:02SPEAKER_04: Yeah, Steve and I always talk about how we're we're so sad that we're too young to uh have gone to tech and seen them play on the football field together on the gridiron.
- 37:10SPEAKER_04: Um, because those were some dubs for us.
- 37:12SPEAKER_04: So uh I I miss that.
- 37:14SPEAKER_04: I miss the rivalry.
- 37:15SPEAKER_04: Um that's that that's a good one, man.
- 37:17SPEAKER_05: We like that one.
- 37:18SPEAKER_04: Thank you, Kyle.
- 37:19SPEAKER_05: Well, and that and that's the thing about the SEC is they don't play their conference opponents.
- 37:24SPEAKER_05: You know, some of their some of these, you know, if they're in the East, they won't play the West team for you know years.
- 37:31SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I I think it's like a I think you go 12 years every time you play.
- 37:35SPEAKER_04: That's ridiculous.
- 37:36SPEAKER_04: Yeah, UT played Georgia before AMD did, I believe.
- 37:40SPEAKER_04: Which is ridiculous.
- 37:43SPEAKER_02: That's crazy.
- 37:44SPEAKER_02: Yeah, that's um since 2000, only five Power Five teams have less 10-win seasons than AM and Texas Tech.
- 37:54SPEAKER_00: Wow.
- 37:56SPEAKER_02: But the Red Raiders still have more AP finishes than the Aggies.
- 38:02SPEAKER_05: Inject the baby in my veins.
- 38:06SPEAKER_03: Hey, I hate this.
- 38:08SPEAKER_04: Kyle, hey, hit us with that with those uh final four finishes.
- 38:11SPEAKER_04: What who who hasn't finished in the final four of things?
- 38:15SPEAKER_02: So since 1936, when the the since the first top four ever became a thing, uh the AP poll has been tracking top four finishes, the final four started tracking a few years a few years, college world series a few years later.
- 38:33SPEAKER_02: Um so top four finishes AM had their one and only in 1939.
- 38:43SPEAKER_05: Everybody was at war!
- 38:49SPEAKER_02: And they still have more than Texas AM all time.
- 38:53SPEAKER_05: Let's go.
- 38:54SPEAKER_02: Let's go, baby.
- 38:54SPEAKER_05: We we love this.
- 38:56SPEAKER_05: UT probably has a ton of them.
- 38:57SPEAKER_02: We know we haven't whatever certainly I'm okay with the most.
- 39:06SPEAKER_02: And if it and uh so I it took a while to research, but I figured it out.
- 39:11SPEAKER_05: So that's awesome.
- 39:12SPEAKER_05: That's awesome, dude.
- 39:13SPEAKER_05: Well, I've seen some of your graphics, man.
- 39:15SPEAKER_05: I I looked at your page that you have linked on your Twitter, and that's dude, that's awesome.
- 39:19SPEAKER_05: Like the the amount of analysis, the amount of research that you have to do for these things is probably insane.
- 39:24SPEAKER_02: Research is the mo is the is the key.
- 39:27SPEAKER_02: It I can't do anything without research, and sometimes the research takes forever just to get a stat.
- 39:33SPEAKER_02: Um, and what I hate the most about Twitter is that you can't predict when you post what something is worth in likes or retweets.
- 39:42SPEAKER_02: Like I remember I probably spent two days like researching a stat about like some sort of opponent conference win percentage against FCS and something crazy.
- 39:53SPEAKER_02: Like I spent so much time trying to figure out that stat.
- 39:56SPEAKER_02: It had about 10 likes, and like a poem about about uh about Bundy's OAN shirt, and it got like 3,000 likes.
- 40:07SPEAKER_02: I'm like, I was just walking through the stairs while I tweeted that.
- 40:11SPEAKER_02: Like I wasn't even thinking how did that I that's what I hate most about Twitter is that's Twitter.
- 40:17SPEAKER_05: Twitter is awful in so many ways.
- 40:20SPEAKER_05: We're on but we can't run with it.
- 40:24SPEAKER_05: Yeah, yeah we can't, I mean we can't get rid of it though.
- 40:27SPEAKER_05: It seems to always come back to us.
- 40:28SPEAKER_05: I'm on Twitter a lot, and I hate every minute I'm on Twitter, but I I do it anyway.
- 40:32SPEAKER_05: I do it, I probably probably just you know, self-inflicted wounds here.
- 40:37SPEAKER_02: Yeah, you you you tweet me and ask me for a stat to destroy you, and I was like, okay, if you want to.
- 40:43SPEAKER_05: Let's do it.
- 40:44SPEAKER_04: Okay, I'm ready to roast you.
- 40:46SPEAKER_04: I like seeing them out in the wild, Kyle.
- 40:48SPEAKER_04: I like I like clicking on a thread and people adding you.
- 40:50SPEAKER_04: I'm just like like, there's one, there's a request.
- 40:54SPEAKER_04: Um how okay, give me like a daily prediction of how many times you're added for a stat.
- 41:00SPEAKER_04: Could you give me a prediction on that?
- 41:02SPEAKER_02: I'd say plus or minus like 15.
- 41:06SPEAKER_02: Like, wow.
- 41:07SPEAKER_02: I got like a few today from like this thread between these people.
- 41:10SPEAKER_02: I'm like, I have no you can just tag me if you just it's always like Kyle, show them what show them what's up.
- 41:19SPEAKER_02: I'm like I started reading people, I'm like, I'm not doing this.
- 41:25SPEAKER_02: Or like someone message me, and like I get like so many DMs a day that were like that are like, hey, do you know the answer to this?
- 41:32SPEAKER_02: Or hey, can you can you respond to this?
- 41:34SPEAKER_05: Or just like man, I don't know you.
- 41:38SPEAKER_05: I don't know, I live my life.
- 41:43SPEAKER_05: I'm like, can't help you, bud.
- 41:45SPEAKER_05: That's a smart move, man.
- 41:46SPEAKER_05: Especially when you when you have 12,000 followers, dude, that's gotta be you know a ton every every single day.
- 41:54SPEAKER_05: I can't imagine that.
- 41:55SPEAKER_02: It's it's hard.
- 41:57SPEAKER_02: Um I mean, I I I I could put like a an avatar to a person's name like back when I started, like I know who people are, like like my main like OG group was what I call them, like the first like thousand I got when I started in 2019.
- 42:13SPEAKER_02: I know all those guys by heart, but like since then it's it's really hard to like differentiate like oh this is this is Text Lover 27.
- 42:24SPEAKER_02: I I thought I I thought that was Horns Guy 32.
- 42:28SPEAKER_02: They have both had the same longhorn emoji, yeah, yeah.
- 42:32SPEAKER_02: Avatar, and but it it's really hard like getting into the 12,000s, like who's who, but yeah, so if if you want me to remember you, everyone, you have to have like a real picture of yourself.
- 42:44SPEAKER_05: Yeah, no doubt.
- 42:45SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I I wouldn't want to, you know, answer to anybody that's just got a basic logo or the egg or anything like that.
- 42:51SPEAKER_05: Or an anime girl.
- 42:52SPEAKER_05: Oh god, or an anime girl.
- 42:54SPEAKER_05: No, you just block those immediately.
- 42:57SPEAKER_02: Or like like I'll get I'll it says like a new follower, uh Chris 777-32212.
- 43:04SPEAKER_05: Oh, yeah, yeah.
- 43:05SPEAKER_02: All the all the numbers, yeah.
- 43:10SPEAKER_02: I'm like, okay, cool.
- 43:11SPEAKER_02: I know what you're about to do, and then he'll like spam my account with Yeesh.
- 43:17SPEAKER_04: Well, what you do is admirable, man.
- 43:19SPEAKER_04: I think you have the purest form of trash talk because it's like not even trash talk, you just give numbers out.
- 43:24SPEAKER_04: So you're like you're never in the mud.
- 43:26SPEAKER_04: So I think it's really admirable and really I can really appreciate it, man.
- 43:29SPEAKER_04: Uh, I've always liked following you.
- 43:30SPEAKER_04: I think I've been following you for a while now, and uh you're you're definitely like the best Texas personality out there right now, I gotta say.
- 43:38SPEAKER_05: You're my you're my favorite Twitter Twitter follower outside of Texas Tech, Texas Week.
- 43:45SPEAKER_05: Saturday's over.
- 43:46SPEAKER_05: We could be man.
- 43:48SPEAKER_05: Hey, I'm I'm there.
- 43:49SPEAKER_05: I'm there.
- 43:49SPEAKER_05: I'm I'm on your Twitter when you when you start slandering the rest of the Big 12, and anytime you're on an AM binge, I'm I'm all there.
- 43:56SPEAKER_02: Well, tomorrow's Thursday, so so keep a lookout.
- 43:59SPEAKER_05: Very nice.
- 44:00SPEAKER_05: Very nice.
- 44:00SPEAKER_05: Well, uh, I just had a few fun questions because obviously you went to UT.
- 44:04SPEAKER_05: You know Austin pretty well, I imagine.
- 44:07SPEAKER_05: Um tacos, San Antonio and Austin.
- 44:10SPEAKER_05: They kind of have a rivalry with them.
- 44:11SPEAKER_05: I'm from San Antonio.
- 44:13SPEAKER_05: Uh what's your what's your kind of go-to taco order?
- 44:17SPEAKER_02: Um I'm obsessed with like spicy, like the spicier the better.
- 44:21SPEAKER_02: So basically, I look for what has like three peppers next to the name.
- 44:26SPEAKER_02: That's what I order.
- 44:27SPEAKER_02: I I whatever is the spicest thing, is that's my go-to.
- 44:30SPEAKER_02: I and I'll get an extra side of hot sauce or whatever, the spiciest sauce with I'll just drown it in it.
- 44:35SPEAKER_02: I can't get enough spicy, so my go-to is the spice thing on the menu.
- 44:40SPEAKER_02: That's right.
- 44:41SPEAKER_05: That's that's right up, that's right up Tristan's alley.
- 44:43SPEAKER_05: This do them the same way.
- 44:44SPEAKER_05: This dude eats stuff that's like I can't, I can't even there's no flavor, it's just heat.
- 44:51SPEAKER_04: No, whatever this is the spiciest thing on the menu, you know it's gonna have the most flavor.
- 44:54SPEAKER_04: That's my mentality.
- 44:56SPEAKER_04: No, because you can't eat it.
- 44:57SPEAKER_04: No, you're wrong.
- 44:59SPEAKER_04: Come on, man.
- 45:00SPEAKER_04: You're the Mexican one too.
- 45:01SPEAKER_04: Come on.
- 45:03SPEAKER_02: The best is when you're drenching, you're like just pouring sweat, and then one of those sweat molecule, one of those sweat droplets goes into your mouth, you're like, ah, I can I can taste it.
- 45:12SPEAKER_05: You guys are nuts.
- 45:14SPEAKER_05: You guys are insane.
- 45:15SPEAKER_05: I am just I'm like, give me something, you know.
- 45:18SPEAKER_05: I'm not a mild, I'm not like I can't eat spicy, but I'm also like I want to taste the food and not, you know, be in pain my whole entire meal.
- 45:27SPEAKER_02: The the key to knowing if it's hot is that you start hiccuping.
- 45:30SPEAKER_02: That's how you hiccup, you're like, oh, it's hot.
- 45:33SPEAKER_02: Yep.
- 45:34SPEAKER_05: Yep, no doubt.
- 45:37SPEAKER_05: Well, okay, favorite bar on 6th Street.
- 45:40SPEAKER_05: Um, I haven't none.
- 45:42SPEAKER_05: You're ambushing him, Steven.
- 45:46SPEAKER_02: But um I don't even know if this is even still open, but back in the day, uh there was like a like there was like a regular 6th Street and like a 36th Street.
- 45:55SPEAKER_02: Oh no, that's still the case.
- 45:56SPEAKER_02: On 36th Street, there was like a lot of places that had like dollar drinks, dollar long islands on Thursdays, all sorts of stuff.
- 46:04SPEAKER_02: Treasure Island was always my go-to.
- 46:06SPEAKER_02: Like, that's when we always started our night was Treasure Island, because it was always dollar something.
- 46:11SPEAKER_02: It doesn't matter what it is.
- 46:12SPEAKER_05: Whatever the dollar Treasure Island sounds like a strip club or a casino.
- 46:16SPEAKER_02: It was both.
- 46:18SPEAKER_02: It was both.
- 46:21SPEAKER_04: But I like I like that mental.
- 46:22SPEAKER_04: That's the college mind there.
- 46:24SPEAKER_04: That should never leave you.
- 46:25SPEAKER_04: You should never be too good for the dollar something.
- 46:26SPEAKER_05: Never.
- 46:28SPEAKER_05: No doubt.
- 46:29SPEAKER_05: We actually had our buddies bachelor party and we went to Austin and we got uh we got dirty on six, hit up Shakespeare's and hit up a couple fun places over there.
- 46:38SPEAKER_05: But uh I like going, I like going and getting dirty on six every once in a while.
- 46:41SPEAKER_05: It's it's fun times.
- 46:43SPEAKER_02: I mean, I mean, even if you even if you're not drinking, even if you're not getting going there to get blackout drunk, just the people watching them there, you can't beat it.
- 46:52SPEAKER_02: It's like Walmart on steroids.
- 46:54SPEAKER_02: There's and everyone's crazy.
- 46:57SPEAKER_02: It's it's awesome.
- 46:58SPEAKER_05: Yeah, man.
- 46:59SPEAKER_05: It's it's good.
- 46:59SPEAKER_05: Austin's a fun place.
- 47:00SPEAKER_05: But uh, why don't we go ahead and end the podcast?
- 47:03SPEAKER_05: We do we do our song of the week every week.
- 47:05SPEAKER_05: Um Tristan and I already gave ours for this week on on our last pod.
- 47:10SPEAKER_05: But Kyle, we wanted to get you involved in this.
- 47:13SPEAKER_05: What is your song of the week?
- 47:15SPEAKER_02: I just started listening to a new album.
- 47:17SPEAKER_02: Um, it I didn't even know they had one.
- 47:19SPEAKER_02: It's been forever since they had one, but uh The Chicks, previously the the Dixie Chicks, but uh Natalie Maines is from Lubbock, so wanted to make sure I included uh some some gas lighter.
- 47:33SPEAKER_02: So that's the song I've been damaging the last few weeks.
- 47:51SPEAKER_04: Absolutely, that one's nice enough, B.
- 47:53SPEAKER_04: It's good, it was a good way for them to kick the door in.
- 47:55SPEAKER_04: And uh that's a good pick, man.
- 47:57SPEAKER_04: And yes, she is, and she actually took one class at tech.
- 48:01SPEAKER_04: She's technically yeah.
- 48:08SPEAKER_05: We love that.
- 48:09SPEAKER_05: Yeah, uh the the chicks, uh pre formerly the Dixie Chicks.
- 48:13SPEAKER_05: Uh my mom had a CD in the car, and when you know, before uh the music streaming services and all that, we would just play, you know, over and over again on the CD.
- 48:22SPEAKER_05: Uh the chicks, and uh they're they're a good group, man.
- 48:24SPEAKER_05: They they have a they have a lot of fun songs for sure.
- 48:27SPEAKER_05: Well, uh Kyle, why don't you go ahead and plug a few things?
- 48:30SPEAKER_05: What's your what's your uh Twitter handle?
- 48:32SPEAKER_02: At Kyle Umlang.
- 48:34SPEAKER_02: Can't mess it up.
- 48:34SPEAKER_02: It's Kyle.
- 48:35SPEAKER_02: You know how spell Kyle.
- 48:37SPEAKER_02: And then Umlang is what name is it?
- 48:39SPEAKER_02: Um Lang.
- 48:41SPEAKER_02: There it is.
- 48:41SPEAKER_02: Umlang Kyle Umlang.
- 48:43SPEAKER_02: Can't miss it.
- 48:44SPEAKER_05: Right on, man.
- 48:45SPEAKER_05: Well, give him a follow.
- 48:46SPEAKER_05: He's he's a really cool guy on Twitter.
- 48:48SPEAKER_05: Uh he's a really cool guy to talk to.
- 48:50SPEAKER_05: Um he's he's got stats out the wazoo.
- 48:54SPEAKER_05: You know, he can always don't DM him if you have an anime girl uh avatar.
- 48:59SPEAKER_05: So uh, but yeah, Kyle, we really appreciate you coming on, man.
- 49:02SPEAKER_02: Great, thanks, man.
- 49:03SPEAKER_02: If and if you ever need a stat, just do like the other hundred people a week do, and just just at me.
- 49:09SPEAKER_05: Absolutely.
- 49:10SPEAKER_04: Are we on the in group now, Kyle?
- 49:12SPEAKER_04: Do we get do we get a priority like a flash pass?
- 49:14SPEAKER_02: Top tier, top tier followers right now.
- 49:17SPEAKER_05: Right on, man.
- 49:18SPEAKER_05: Right on, dude.
- 49:20SPEAKER_05: Um cool, man.
- 49:21SPEAKER_05: Hope for a good game this weekend.
- 49:22SPEAKER_05: Uh, you know, we don't want to see a blowout on either end.
- 49:25SPEAKER_05: Um hope hopefully we get we get uh some some uh fun, memorable plays.
- 49:30SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 49:31SPEAKER_02: No one likes seeing this the the crowd span and like the sad guy like this when it's like the first quarter.
- 49:37SPEAKER_02: No one wants to see that.
- 49:38SPEAKER_04: Uh they make good memes though.
- 49:40SPEAKER_02: They do.
- 49:42SPEAKER_05: Yeah, they do.
- 49:43SPEAKER_05: Well, right on, man.
- 49:44SPEAKER_05: Stay safe out there.
- 49:45SPEAKER_05: Uh, we really appreciate it.
- 49:46SPEAKER_04: Yeah, Kyle, we hope that maybe we can bring you on for basketball or baseball.
- 49:50SPEAKER_04: Let's do it.
- 49:51SPEAKER_04: Awesome, Kyle.
- 49:52SPEAKER_04: Thanks again, man.
- 49:53SPEAKER_04: We really appreciate you taking the time.
- 49:54SPEAKER_03: Thanks, guys.
- 49:55SPEAKER_00: Uh wow.
- 49:56SPEAKER_00: First of all, uh, got a lot of respect for Steven and Tristan.
- 50:01SPEAKER_00: Uh, their program, tough guys, just uh a lot of fun.
- 50:05SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I just want to congratulate Stephen and Tristan on another great podcast.
- 50:09SPEAKER_00: They were everything we thought they would be.
- 50:11SPEAKER_00: Um, we have a lot of respect for their program.
- 50:13SPEAKER_00: We have such a high opinion of them.
- 50:15SPEAKER_00: I want to congratulate them.
- 50:16SPEAKER_01: I just want to tell Stephen and Tristan thanks for coming out.
- 50:20SPEAKER_01: The energy uh was really, really good in there today.
- 50:23SPEAKER_01: You know, we fed off of it.
- 50:24SPEAKER_01: I think it goes back and forth.
- 50:26SPEAKER_01: Tremendous.
- 50:27SPEAKER_01: Uh great job, and um, you know, just just proud of our guys for the way they responded.
