Transcript
- 0:09SPEAKER_00: Welcome to the Daily Writer, where we share a lesson each day to help you cultivate the habits for writing success.
- 0:17SPEAKER_00: One of the difficulties of creative work, which includes writing, is that we sometimes have vague ideas about what our goals are.
- 0:24SPEAKER_00: We haven't determined ahead of time what it means to win or lose.
- 0:27SPEAKER_00: Therefore, no matter what we do, we never quite know if we've hit the mark.
- 0:32SPEAKER_00: This is a surefire way to get discouraged and confused because we don't have a clear idea of what success means for us.
- 0:39SPEAKER_00: When you lay your head on the pillow at night, how do you know if that day was a success in terms of writing?
- 0:44SPEAKER_00: How do you know whether to feel good or bad about your work that day?
- 0:48SPEAKER_00: Well, here's something that you can try.
- 0:50SPEAKER_00: Determine what you need to write, then just get it done.
- 0:54SPEAKER_00: You can measure it by page count, by word count, or the time spent on writing.
- 0:58SPEAKER_00: It doesn't really matter how you measure your success.
- 1:01SPEAKER_00: The point is to set a goal, then work to achieve that goal.
- 1:04SPEAKER_00: The author Julia Cameron, who wrote the fantastic book called The Artist's Way, among many other books, she said this.
- 1:11SPEAKER_00: Just as a good rain clears the air, a good writing day clears the psyche.
- 1:16SPEAKER_00: And man, isn't that the truth?
- 1:18SPEAKER_00: So make sure that you do everything you can to have a good writing day every day.
- 1:23SPEAKER_00: If you set a goal and then keep that appointment with yourself, you can do it.
- 1:27SPEAKER_00: There's no better feeling than laying down your head on the pillow at night, knowing that you got your work done and you kept your promise to yourself.
- 1:35SPEAKER_00: Here's your daily question.
- 1:37SPEAKER_00: What is your writing goal for today and when are you going to set aside time to do it?
- 1:42SPEAKER_00: Thanks so much for listening to today's episode.
