- 0:00Welcome to loud and lifted quick lifts. I'm your
- 0:03host Betsy Hamm. And in this quick lift episode,
- 0:05we spotlight the standout moments from our interview
- 0:07with Satine Donner, Associate Editor of Women
- 0:10in Restaurant Leadership at QSR and FSR magazine.
- 0:13Satine isn't just writing about industry change,
- 0:15she's actively leading it by building a national
- 0:18platform that uplifts and connects women across
- 0:20the restaurant world. Today, we're going to dive
- 0:23into three powerful takeaways that you can put
- 0:25into action immediately. Whether you're launching
- 0:27your own group or building authentic connections
- 0:30or just figuring out how to lead from where you
- 0:33are. These micro moments are packed with macro
- 0:35impact. Less than 10 minutes, this is your invitation
- 0:39to get clear, get bold and get going with actionable
- 0:42takeaways you can use right now to live louder
- 0:45and lead better. So quick lift action item inspired
- 0:56by Satine and number one is lead from where you
- 0:59are. So many times in my career, I have heard
- 1:02people say that they want to be in a position
- 1:03of leadership or management and they want the
- 1:07opportunity to lead. Well, the reality is, is
- 1:09you can lead from any position. Yes, of course,
- 1:12it's going to look different if you are at a
- 1:14lower level in a big company, but... Despite
- 1:17your age or your title, you can still make an
- 1:19impact. If Satine didn't tell us at the beginning
- 1:22of the interview that she was 23, I think that
- 1:24probably would have surprised a lot of people.
- 1:26One, because of the role that she's in and the
- 1:29impact she's making. But two, she was so impressive
- 1:33with her wisdom and her knowledge at such a young
- 1:36age. So Satine was a great example of you can
- 1:39lead from any age or from any position. She had
- 1:42the opportunity to take this and run with it.
- 1:45And she's been running fast and furious and in
- 1:48the right direction, but we can't get hung up
- 1:50on titles and we can't get hung up on age that
- 1:53anybody can lead. And sometimes you may not feel
- 1:55like you have the opportunity, but that's where
- 1:57you have to maybe go outside your comfort zone
- 1:59a little bit more and raise your hand to be the
- 2:02leader of a project. Or maybe it's even an initiative
- 2:04or a volunteer group that's at your company.
- 2:07It might not look obvious at first but taking
- 2:11on those opportunities is a great way to Utilize
- 2:15and strengthen your leadership and nothing else
- 2:17Try to focus on the pieces of a leadership that
- 2:20you think you need to improve on to be better
- 2:22We can always improve and you know some of the
- 2:25big pieces I think of what helps to make somebody
- 2:27strong and leadership is communication Communication
- 2:30is something we can always work on because if
- 2:32you want to be able to lead people, you want
- 2:34to be able to inspire and you want to be able
- 2:36to guide. So in order to inspire and guide others
- 2:40around you, communication is huge. Can you connect
- 2:43with them? Can you build relationships? Can you
- 2:46clearly talk about your ideas or your thoughts
- 2:48or why you think something should or shouldn't
- 2:50happen? So continuing to work on your communication
- 2:53is continuing to improve your leadership. The
- 2:56other piece of that, as I mentioned, is relationships,
- 2:58which they really go hand in hand. And also emotional
- 3:01intelligence. We're working with people who have
- 3:04very different backgrounds and are coming to
- 3:06work every day with different stories. So being
- 3:09able to relate and understand and know where
- 3:11someone's coming from and know how to handle
- 3:13the response to that is huge. And again, if leadership
- 3:17is about inspiring and guiding others, this is
- 3:19how you're going to get people to want to come
- 3:22the direction that you're asking them to. So
- 3:24leadership isn't reserved for just the C -suite.
- 3:26Start with what you have and who you know. And
- 3:29if there's a gap and you see the space, fill
- 3:31it. Start the group, spark the idea, and raise
- 3:35your hand. Next quick lift action item, build
- 3:38a real community. Start with connection, not
- 3:41clout. Now, of course, Satine had the luxury,
- 3:45I guess you could say, to have a pretty big media
- 3:49group backing this initiative so that certainly
- 3:51helped but even with a big group that can help
- 3:54get the name out there she still had to work
- 3:57on building those connections and she talked
- 3:59about bringing people in who she knew were going
- 4:01to be passionate about the project to get behind
- 4:04it and for them to be able to influence others
- 4:06that they had that voice where they could also
- 4:08help bring people into the mix. But that's great.
- 4:11You might not have the opportunity to come at
- 4:13it from that angle. So start small. Just gather
- 4:15a group. It could be different ages, backgrounds,
- 4:18and strengths, but people who you think can learn
- 4:20from each other. And just start with hosting
- 4:23a coffee or asking people go meet up for dinner
- 4:26or maybe you do a little panel. But prioritize
- 4:29honesty and good energy and having fun and let
- 4:32the space grow organically. You don't have to
- 4:34have 500 people in a room for your first event.
- 4:38That's awesome and it's amazing, but just start
- 4:40small, even if it's with three or four people.
- 4:42It may grow into something bigger with hundreds
- 4:44of women, or maybe it's not. Maybe it's just
- 4:47building some new circles that will help benefit
- 4:49those around you. So again, start small, whether
- 4:52it's your local business owners and you're trying
- 4:54to support each other, or you're at a big organization
- 4:57and you just need to have that connection. It
- 4:59can start very naturally and organically, but
- 5:02you're going to have to reach out. If it doesn't
- 5:04exist, then take this as your sign to be the
- 5:07person who makes the first call. as the first
- 5:09text. The other thing is there are a lot of organizations
- 5:12that already exist. So if starting one is maybe
- 5:15not up your alley, look for what's in your industry.
- 5:18It could be within your company. It could be
- 5:20within your industry. Volunteering for organizations
- 5:23is actually a great way to reach people with
- 5:26diverse backgrounds. So maybe you can go volunteer
- 5:28for the Salvation Army or for Girls on the Run
- 5:30or whatever organization you're passionate about.
- 5:33But that's a great way to meet people with different
- 5:36backgrounds that you can feel good about yourself
- 5:39and do some volunteering. your work or support
- 5:40an organization that's important to you but also
- 5:43a really great way to meet other women. And the
- 5:46last quick lift action item is elevate, educate,
- 5:50empower. And I'm going to add connect to this.
- 5:53The teen talked about that being her pillars,
- 5:55that that's what they go back to. That's what
- 5:56they're trying to fulfill. And those are great
- 5:58words. And even if you're not looking to start
- 6:01a organization, this is just great as you build
- 6:04out your circle. I keep going back to the circles.
- 6:07You can see how important I think this is, but
- 6:09as we've talked about, you need to have people
- 6:11around you who are supporting you, who are cheering
- 6:13for you and who are elevating. Educating is just
- 6:16maybe learning about something new or different
- 6:18or how to handle a situation, empowering each
- 6:21other and continuing to connect. So if you are
- 6:24looking to launch anything new, just ask yourself,
- 6:26does it lift women up? Does it help them grow?
- 6:28Does it give them a voice? And keep those pillars
- 6:31front and center and your impact will speak for
- 6:33itself. no matter how big or how small. So those
- 6:36are our quick lifts for today. They're pretty
- 6:39easy. They're about leading from where you are
- 6:41and whatever time of season and life you're in
- 6:44position, you can still be a leader. Continue
- 6:47to focus on building a real community, whether
- 6:49it's a bigger group or an organization or just
- 6:53focusing on your circles and continue to elevate,
- 6:57educate, empower, and connect. A lot of great
- 6:59advice here for today. And as the team said,
- 7:02act first, post later. And remember, we are cheering
- 7:05for you.
