- 0:29Speaker 1: Great day to start that relationship. Make an appointment at
- 0:32Speaker 1: Checkout Veterinary telphon number six oh eight three one eight
- 0:35Speaker 1: sixty seven hundred. That's six oh eight three one eight
- 0:37Speaker 1: sixty seven hundred. And joining us this morning is doctor
- 0:40Speaker 1: Marty Greer. Of course, doctor Reer recognized by the Westminster
- 0:43Speaker 1: kinnl as Veterinarian of the Year.
- 0:45Speaker 2: Doctor.
- 0:45Speaker 1: How you doing this morning?
- 0:49Speaker 2: I'm doing great. Thank you.
- 0:50Speaker 1: It's good to talk to you, and we're going to
- 0:52Speaker 1: talk about some of the things as as patients are
- 0:55Speaker 1: pets and UH and as clients at checkout vet, we
- 0:59Speaker 1: may not always see or understand, and I find it fascinating.
- 1:02Speaker 1: We've been talking the past couple of weeks. Of course,
- 1:04Speaker 1: the hours at Checkout Veterinary Monday through Wednesday and then
- 1:07Speaker 1: Friday through Sunday nine until five and soon to be
- 1:10Speaker 1: all seven days a week at checkout VET. Of course,
- 1:13Speaker 1: check in VET is open Monday through Friday. But you
- 1:15Speaker 1: had mentioned hiring new vets and bringing new veterinarians on
- 1:19Speaker 1: at Checkout VET. I thought, well, that's interesting, kind of
- 1:21Speaker 1: how the for those of us that don't always get
- 1:24Speaker 1: a chance to learn about this stuff what all goes
- 1:27Speaker 1: on in a VET clinic. And obviously the person that
- 1:31Speaker 1: most of us are familiar with is our veterinarian. But
- 1:35Speaker 1: there's a lot of support staff around. Let's got us
- 1:37Speaker 1: talk about some of the people around you at the clinic,
- 1:41Speaker 1: some of the people that make things work so well.
- 1:44Speaker 1: And of course a lot of folks may be familiar
- 1:46Speaker 1: with the term like a vet tech. What exactly, doctor Greer,
- 1:48Speaker 1: does a vet tech do?
- 1:50Speaker 2: Sure? So it's about a four to one ratio of
- 1:54Speaker 2: one doctor to four support staff, depending on who they are.
- 2:00Speaker 2: We have lots of support staff. We have people who
- 2:03Speaker 2: answer the phones that keep things rolling after hours. We
- 2:07Speaker 2: have a service that helps us to answer the phone
- 2:10Speaker 2: at the practice so that there's trained professionals that can
- 2:14Speaker 2: help you make decisions about how your veterinary care needs
- 2:17Speaker 2: to be provided, should you go in, is it an emergency,
- 2:20Speaker 2: those kinds of things. Of course, we have our CSR
- 2:24Speaker 2: as a receptionists. The customer service representatives will help on
- 2:29Speaker 2: the phone. We have ave Tack, a certified that tech
- 2:33Speaker 2: and that's a very specific term and sometimes gets used
- 2:38Speaker 2: a little casually. There is a certified veterinary technician and
- 2:42Speaker 2: this is someone who has at least a two year
- 2:44Speaker 2: degree with additional training after high school on veterinary care.
- 2:50Speaker 2: In Wisconsin, they're called certified. Some states column registered, so
- 2:54Speaker 2: there are RvTs, some state calum licensed LVTs. But it's
- 2:58Speaker 2: a very specific term meaning that they are trained specifically
- 3:01Speaker 2: to run anesthesia, to give vaccines, to assist the doctor,
- 3:07Speaker 2: to take X rays, to draw lab work, all kinds
- 3:09Speaker 2: of specific veterinary procedures that they're trained to do. Then
- 3:14Speaker 2: we have veterinary assistants and those are the ones who
- 3:18Speaker 2: help us with the other stuff. You have to be
- 3:22Speaker 2: in Wisconsin to give a ravy vaccination or to run anesesia.
- 3:26Speaker 2: You have to be a certified veterinary technician. Veterinary assistance
- 3:29Speaker 2: are not allowed to do those specific procedures. They can help,
- 3:33Speaker 2: but they're not allowed to be the person who's running
- 3:35Speaker 2: the anthesion monitoring your pet during an sesion to make
- 3:38Speaker 2: sure that they're safe. Then we have the other support staff.
- 3:43Speaker 2: We have a manager at practices and then so that's
- 3:48Speaker 2: going to be an office manager or practice manager. If
- 3:52Speaker 2: it's somebody that runs multiple clinics, that might be a
- 3:54Speaker 2: hospital administrator. So there's a couple of different levels of
- 3:58Speaker 2: administrative care as well as just the just the VA's
- 4:04Speaker 2: just certified VETTEX and the doctors. So there's a lot
- 4:08Speaker 2: of layers to it.
- 4:08Speaker 1: The sure is I want to ask about kind of
- 4:10Speaker 1: assembling that team. I know you put a lot of
- 4:12Speaker 1: work over the years. We talk about the clinic and
- 4:14Speaker 1: the amount of work that went into kind of the
- 4:16Speaker 1: design and set up, and I know finding those right
- 4:19Speaker 1: doctors and right team around you as well at Checkout
- 4:22Speaker 1: Veterinary is really important. That's one of the great things
- 4:24Speaker 1: about taking your pet and getting into Checkout Veterinary is
- 4:28Speaker 1: it's a great location. Of course, they're real conveniently located
- 4:31Speaker 1: right at twenty seven to ten Prairie Lakes Drive and
- 4:33Speaker 1: sun Prarie, just off the interstate. If you can hear
- 4:34Speaker 1: our voice this morning, you are just moments away from
- 4:37Speaker 1: Checkout Veterinary. Not only is the clinic unique, the team
- 4:40Speaker 1: around around the doctor and of course the doctors at
- 4:42Speaker 1: checkout vet they are there for you. They are very
- 4:44Speaker 1: special people. Great data, start that relationship. Pick up phone,
- 4:47Speaker 1: give a call six oh eight three one eight sixty
- 4:49Speaker 1: seven hundred. That's six oh eight three one eight sixty
- 4:51Speaker 1: seven hundred. Doctor. I remember very early on a conversation
- 4:55Speaker 1: we had on air, and you had mentioned about kind
- 4:58Speaker 1: of the importance of the people aroun round you, and
- 5:01Speaker 1: you know, and make sure as as clients and as
- 5:04Speaker 1: as we bring in our pets that we're acknowledging. You know,
- 5:08Speaker 1: these these people do very very hard work. And I know,
- 5:10Speaker 1: speaking of hard work, you personally work very hard on
- 5:13Speaker 1: finding that right team of folks, whether it's the vets
- 5:17Speaker 1: or or the support staff around you. You work very
- 5:20Speaker 1: hard on finding really good fits, don't you.
- 5:24Speaker 2: Oh yeah, it's truly important that they are compassionate, caring,
- 5:28Speaker 2: want to be there, want to work the hours that
- 5:30Speaker 2: we're offering them services because working weekends, well, you know,
- 5:35Speaker 2: there's some practices and there's some professions that that's not
- 5:39Speaker 2: something that you have to do. But pets don't pick
- 5:41Speaker 2: the day of the time and the day that they
- 5:43Speaker 2: get six. So we have to be available when they
- 5:47Speaker 2: need us. And yes, it does take a lot of
- 5:49Speaker 2: work to get the right people together and then they
- 5:51Speaker 2: have to be compatible with each other. And so yeah,
- 5:53Speaker 2: there's a lot of layers to it, just like you
- 5:56Speaker 2: know any other team that you put together. It's not
- 5:59Speaker 2: it's not just you know, do you have a pulse.
- 6:01Speaker 2: It has to be a lot more than just that
- 6:03Speaker 2: you're breathing and that you that you show up, but
- 6:05Speaker 2: that you really are compassionate and and really care about
- 6:10Speaker 2: what you do.
- 6:12Speaker 1: Talking this morning with doctor Marty Greer of Checkout Veterinarian
- 6:14Speaker 1: the website checkout vet dot com. That's checkout vet dot
- 6:18Speaker 1: com or toping number six. So eight three one eight
- 6:20Speaker 1: sixty seven hundred, that's six eight three one eight sixty
- 6:22Speaker 1: seven hundred. Let's talk about vets and this was this
- 6:25Speaker 1: is something that has surprised me, is there is a
- 6:28Speaker 1: shortage and it's it's it's sometimes quite difficult to find
- 6:32Speaker 1: the right vet for the clinic. And I did not
- 6:34Speaker 1: realize that what is going on in the in the
- 6:36Speaker 1: in the industry, or or in the world. That's that
- 6:39Speaker 1: we're seeing, you know, a hard you know, clinics closing
- 6:43Speaker 1: across the country. We're seeing consolidation oftentimes. What's going on
- 6:47Speaker 1: with the with kind of the the veterinarian world right
- 6:51Speaker 1: now doctor that we're that we're seeing this this reduction
- 6:53Speaker 1: in the number of doctors out there.
- 6:57Speaker 2: Well, COVID hit pretty hard. There were people who were
- 7:00Speaker 2: pretty impacted by that, and it changed the hours that
- 7:04Speaker 2: practices were open. A lot of practices shortened up. We
- 7:07Speaker 2: did shorten up our hours. We have never gone back
- 7:11Speaker 2: to the hours we had before. We used to be
- 7:12Speaker 2: open in Lamira until nine o'clock at night, and that
- 7:16Speaker 2: changed during COVID, and that once that disappears, it's really
- 7:19Speaker 2: hard to get it back. The emergency clinic and referral centers,
- 7:23Speaker 2: many of those are open twenty four hours a day,
- 7:25Speaker 2: seven days a week, but some of those have reduced
- 7:28Speaker 2: their hours again because of staffing, so it has been
- 7:31Speaker 2: more difficult to staff were but we stopped at Walmart
- 7:34Speaker 2: last night, you know, and Walmart used to be twenty
- 7:36Speaker 2: four hours a day at any of their locations, and
- 7:39Speaker 2: I don't think there's any twenty four our walmarts anymore. So,
- 7:43Speaker 2: you know, it certainly has been different. During COVID, some
- 7:47Speaker 2: of the places went to curbside. We fortunately never did.
- 7:51Speaker 2: We continue to serve our clients by letting them come
- 7:53Speaker 2: into the practice because I think it's really important that
- 7:56Speaker 2: your pet is accompanied by you, and that's why we
- 7:59Speaker 2: did set up practice and that drive through the way
- 8:01Speaker 2: we did is so that you can be present and
- 8:04Speaker 2: be with them. I think it's really important that you
- 8:06Speaker 2: see what's happening. They rely on you to know that
- 8:09Speaker 2: it's okay, that it's safe, and that you understand what
- 8:13Speaker 2: we're doing. And we can explain to you all along
- 8:15Speaker 2: the way what we're doing, what we're finding, what our
- 8:17Speaker 2: physical exam findings are, what our test results are, and
- 8:21Speaker 2: how we need to address your pet's care. So that's
- 8:25Speaker 2: something that we really are significantly committed to. But a
- 8:29Speaker 2: lot of practices have cut back their hours. Some are
- 8:31Speaker 2: still curve side. They just prefer it that way, and
- 8:36Speaker 2: it's just in a general way, it's just been harder
- 8:39Speaker 2: to hire staff and harder to hire doctors. There is
- 8:43Speaker 2: also the corporatization happening in veterinary medicine, as it is
- 8:47Speaker 2: in dentistry and some of the other professionals optometry, eptomology.
- 8:52Speaker 2: There are corporations now that own these practices instead of
- 8:55Speaker 2: it being individually owned by the local doctor and their
- 9:01Speaker 2: family member, often that worked in the practice, a husband
- 9:04Speaker 2: and wife, you know kids. Uh, it's really it's changed
- 9:07Speaker 2: a lot. So corporatization has not necessarily improved some of
- 9:13Speaker 2: the things that happen. In other ways it has. They've
- 9:16Speaker 2: been able to allow better staff benefits, but it's it's
- 9:20Speaker 2: more difficult because we don't have that mom and pop
- 9:24Speaker 2: feel to some of the practices anymore.
- 9:26Speaker 1: Docor this morning with doctor Mardy Greer kind of lifting
- 9:29Speaker 1: up the curtain a little bit. You ever wonder what
- 9:31Speaker 1: goes on in the world of veterinary medicine. Some really
- 9:33Speaker 1: great information from the doctor. Speaking of great information, if
- 9:36Speaker 1: you if you haven't had a chance to check out
- 9:38Speaker 1: the website for checkout Veterinary, head on over there now
- 9:41Speaker 1: checkout vet dot com. That's checkout vet dot com. The
- 9:44Speaker 1: clinic very conveniently located right at twenty seven to ten
- 9:47Speaker 1: Prairie Lakes drive in sun Prairie. Great day to make
- 9:49Speaker 1: that appointment. Six soh eight three one eight sixty seven hundred.
- 9:52Speaker 1: That's six oh eight three one eight sixty seven hundred.
- 9:55Speaker 1: Between checkout Vet and check in Vet, they've got you
- 9:57Speaker 1: covered seven days a week. Of course, check in Vet
- 10:00Speaker 1: Monday through Friday and check out Vet Monday through Wednesday
- 10:03Speaker 1: and then Friday through Sunday, so they are available to
- 10:06Speaker 1: you weekends. And and doctor, what about the clinics themselves?
- 10:09Speaker 1: And well, I'll probably you know, Focus in Marshall is
- 10:12Speaker 1: a great example of that. A lot of clinics like
- 10:15Speaker 1: those nice community where you know, it's a smaller town
- 10:19Speaker 1: and everybody knows each other and the doctor the vet
- 10:22Speaker 1: is really convened to get in. Places like that have
- 10:25Speaker 1: have gone by the wayside, and you were able to
- 10:28Speaker 1: when the Marshall Clinic became available, you guys were able
- 10:31Speaker 1: to come in at Checkout Veterinary and keep that that
- 10:33Speaker 1: clinic going. Stuff like that isn't all that common these days,
- 10:37Speaker 1: is it.
- 10:38Speaker 2: No? A lot of those practices are closing, consolidating, uh,
- 10:43Speaker 2: shortening hours. Doctors are retiring and don't have anybody to
- 10:47Speaker 2: take over for them. Uh, there's a you know, generational
- 10:50Speaker 2: difference in who wants to be responsible for practice ownership.
- 10:54Speaker 2: So we've seen a change in that. Now that being
- 10:56Speaker 2: said that that isn't everybody, but it certainly is a
- 10:59Speaker 2: percent of people. And there are a lot of new
- 11:01Speaker 2: graduates coming to market, you know, coming out of school
- 11:04Speaker 2: that are interested in owning practices. So we want to
- 11:07Speaker 2: foster that. There are organizations that helped us support them.
- 11:10Speaker 2: There are student organizations and veterinary organizations to support the
- 11:14Speaker 2: new graduates, and in fact, we're hiring a new one
- 11:17Speaker 2: for Lamira, So we're excited about that and that's going
- 11:21Speaker 2: to make a big difference if we can mentor some
- 11:23Speaker 2: of these people that are interested in practice ownership, because
- 11:27Speaker 2: it is a lot of students graduate with a significant
- 11:30Speaker 2: amount of debt, but practice ownership is the fast track
- 11:34Speaker 2: to paying off your debt more quickly than just working
- 11:37Speaker 2: in a practice. So we want to foster that. We
- 11:39Speaker 2: want to support new graduates, We want to support them
- 11:42Speaker 2: in practice ownership and give them the opportunities that we had.
- 11:47Speaker 2: I mean, it was pretty exciting when we graduated. You know,
- 11:50Speaker 2: we did didn't really know what we were doing, but
- 11:52Speaker 2: somehow we managed to start a practice, and here we are,
- 11:55Speaker 2: you know, forty forty years later, we're still we're still
- 11:59Speaker 2: out there.
- 12:00Speaker 1: Talk to you too about about that, about obviously what
- 12:02Speaker 1: dro drew you into into veterinary medicine. And I know
- 12:05Speaker 1: there's a lot of a lot of folks with kiddos
- 12:08Speaker 1: and grandkids that may have interest in becoming vets or
- 12:11Speaker 1: working in the in the in the veterinary care industry.
- 12:15Speaker 1: I want to talk to you a little bit about that.
- 12:17Speaker 1: We'll get to uh, get to that just a moment,
- 12:19Speaker 1: doctor Gray. If you haven't had a chance, please head
- 12:20Speaker 1: on over to the website. Just a great one. Checkout
- 12:22Speaker 1: vet dot com. That's checkout vet dot com. You can

- 12:42Speaker 1: That's six oh eight three one eight sixty seven hundred.
- 12:45Speaker 1: More of ask the experts. But check out Veterinary continues
- 12:48Speaker 1: next right here on thirteen ten Double U I B A.
- 12:54Speaker 1: Thirteen ten, Double U I B A and Ask the
- 12:56Speaker 1: Experts talking this morning with doctor Marty Greer of Checkout Veterinary.
- 13:00Speaker 1: You can learn more online their website checkout vet dot com.
- 13:04Speaker 1: AT's check out vet dot com if you haven't been
- 13:06Speaker 1: there recently. I know a lot of work went into
- 13:08Speaker 1: the redesign and update of checkout vet dot com. It
- 13:11Speaker 1: really does a great job of helping understand what makes
- 13:15Speaker 1: the Checkout Veterinary concepts so amazing, so convenient for you
- 13:19Speaker 1: and your pat And we're going to talk about for folks,
- 13:22Speaker 1: young folks that may want to get into the end
- 13:24Speaker 1: of the practice, so what it's what all to think
- 13:26Speaker 1: about and what that's like. But first and foremost coming
- 13:29Speaker 1: up on Sunday, Oh my goodness, we're already into May. Sunday,
- 13:33Speaker 1: May fourth, You've got your Meet the Vet event going
- 13:35Speaker 1: on at Checkout Veterinary from three until five, and doctor
- 13:39Speaker 1: it's going to be a great opportunity for folks to
- 13:40Speaker 1: come in, meet the doctors, check out the clinic, get
- 13:44Speaker 1: to know everybody, and it sounds like a really fun event.
- 13:46Speaker 1: Coming up on Sunday.
- 13:48Speaker 2: Yeah, we've got some fun activities planned. We're going to
- 13:51Speaker 2: have a nice opportunity to meet doctor Scheller and I'll
- 13:54Speaker 2: be there. Doctor Griffins will be there, so it'll be
- 13:56Speaker 2: fun to get a chance to see people and meet them.
- 14:00Speaker 2: Ease off. You are just a little curious about whether
- 14:02Speaker 2: this is the right place for you and your pet,
- 14:05Speaker 2: Please stop in and take a look at how we
- 14:09Speaker 2: do things our facility. It's really beautiful, it's clean, it
- 14:13Speaker 2: smells great, The pets are comfortable. So if you just
- 14:17Speaker 2: want to test the waters, please stop by and say
- 14:20Speaker 2: hi and get to know us, see how we practice
- 14:22Speaker 2: and what our philosophy is and how we can help
- 14:24Speaker 2: your pets. And thanks.
- 14:25Speaker 1: Coming up on Sunday the fourth, that's this Sunday from
- 14:28Speaker 1: three and till five at the sun Prairie location right
- 14:31Speaker 1: at twenty seven to ten Prairie Lakes drive in some prairie.
- 14:34Speaker 1: Really great opportunity. And Doctor we were talking earlier about
- 14:38Speaker 1: just about you know, putting that team together around you,
- 14:40Speaker 1: and you mentioned some of the other vets are going
- 14:43Speaker 1: to be at this event. I know that that's important too,
- 14:45Speaker 1: is having really good communication skills and really being interested
- 14:50Speaker 1: in engaging and engaging with not just the pets, but
- 14:52Speaker 1: with the people as well. So really good opportunity again.
- 14:56Speaker 1: Meet the VET coming up on Sunday from three until
- 14:58Speaker 1: five at the Checkout VET right on Prairie Lakes Drive.
- 15:02Speaker 1: Great event. I get on and say hello, check the
- 15:04Speaker 1: place out. Let's talk about I know that you know
- 15:08Speaker 1: you were talking about your experience and kind of when
- 15:10Speaker 1: you got started in veterinary medicine. And obviously everybody's journey
- 15:14Speaker 1: is a little bit different. But for people that may
- 15:17Speaker 1: be looking at a career in veterinary medicine, what's some
- 15:20Speaker 1: of your advice to them, What do you advise them
- 15:22Speaker 1: to be doing now and kind of what are some
- 15:25Speaker 1: of the steps they should be taking.
- 15:28Speaker 2: Sure, so for kids that are interested, and there's kind
- 15:30Speaker 2: of two subsets of people that enter veterinary medicine. One
- 15:34Speaker 2: is the subset that when they were four or five
- 15:36Speaker 2: years old, that's all they ever wanted to be or
- 15:39Speaker 2: to do, was to grow up to be a veterinarian.
- 15:41Speaker 2: They wanted to do horses or cattle or dogs, cats,
- 15:44Speaker 2: you know, whatever. So at a very very young age
- 15:47Speaker 2: people pick up on this. The other subset is in
- 15:51Speaker 2: late high school and early college that they realized that
- 15:54Speaker 2: this is a good career choice for them. So it's
- 15:57Speaker 2: an opportunity for us to realize that kids at a
- 16:00Speaker 2: very early age, very tender age, get excited about this career.
- 16:04Speaker 2: So if you're interested, you have to have really good grades,
- 16:07Speaker 2: and you have to realize that it's going to be
- 16:09Speaker 2: a pretty long haul. To go through veterinary school. You
- 16:11Speaker 2: need a three to four year undergraduate program and then
- 16:15Speaker 2: a four year degree program in veterinary medicine, and then
- 16:18Speaker 2: for sub students they go on to do an internship
- 16:21Speaker 2: and or a residency, so that can be up to
- 16:24Speaker 2: twelve years by the time you get done with everything
- 16:27Speaker 2: post high school. If you're not interested in that much
- 16:30Speaker 2: time and educational settings, then a veterinary technician can be
- 16:35Speaker 2: a great career as well. Like I said, that's a
- 16:37Speaker 2: two year program. There is a four year as well,
- 16:39Speaker 2: but most people do the two year program. And there
- 16:42Speaker 2: are some set of specialties now developing in that field
- 16:46Speaker 2: as well, for anesthesia and dentistry and some other aspects.
- 16:50Speaker 2: So almost any specialty that we see in human medicine,
