Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Welcome to another episode of Eating Wild Broke. I'm your host,
- 0:03Speaker 1: Colleen Wit, and today we are outside the typical l
- 0:06Speaker 1: a podcast studio and into New York City, where I'm
- 0:09Speaker 1: originally from, and we are not cooking. We're eating out
- 0:13Speaker 1: today and we have a special guest. And the special
- 0:15Speaker 1: guest is my baby Brother also known as My Little Brother,
- 0:20Speaker 1: stand up comic. You may have seen him on Comedy Central, HBO.
- 0:23Speaker 1: He sells out a lot of secret shows all over
- 0:26Speaker 1: New York City. Can catch him at the seller I
- 0:29Speaker 1: mean you literally can stalk his Instagram and try to
- 0:31Speaker 1: find a way to catch him. But I promise you'll
- 0:33Speaker 1: be an amazing night. So, Eagle Wits, what will you
- 0:39Speaker 1: have us eating today? Dollar slices? Dollars slices, so dollar
- 0:43Speaker 1: pizza slices? Okay, okay, So is this something you ate
- 1:10Speaker 1: on the regular or was it like you were cooking
- 1:13Speaker 1: up something else? And this is what I was eating
- 1:15Speaker 1: before stand up paid like doing the open mics and
- 1:18Speaker 1: you know, you get a dollar slice. My boy shout
- 1:21Speaker 1: out with sama. He would He actually taught me. He
- 1:24Speaker 1: was like, if you put hot sauce on the slice,
- 1:26Speaker 1: like drizzle hot sauce on it. It's almost like the
- 1:28Speaker 1: pepperoni's there, like you could taste the pepperoni. And we
- 1:32Speaker 1: used to do that every day. We ask other comics
- 1:35Speaker 1: to have more money than us for a dollar just
- 1:37Speaker 1: to go get a dollar slice. And now have you
- 1:39Speaker 1: ever like now that you I would say, you're I
- 1:42Speaker 1: want to say you've arrived in your career. You're definitely
- 1:45Speaker 1: you're definitely doing well. Would you do you ever randomly
- 1:49Speaker 1: like get starving, hungry and say let me go get
- 1:51Speaker 1: a dollar slice? Or you know that's how much you
- 1:54Speaker 1: hate it? Yeah, it's over, it's over. Okay, okay, okay,
- 1:57Speaker 1: So on a one to ten, if you were comparing
- 2:00Speaker 1: to slices, you have the dollar slice versus your average slice,
- 2:03Speaker 1: Like where does this dollar slice range? You could get
- 2:05Speaker 1: a really good dollar slice that's like a six out
- 2:09Speaker 1: of a ten, you know, Oh you mean like a
- 2:13Speaker 1: random like just one day it comes up and it's
- 2:16Speaker 1: a decent like some of them, some of them dollars
- 2:18Speaker 1: places to be all right, you know for real, but
- 2:20Speaker 1: you wouldn't never done. I mean, it's not messing with
- 2:22Speaker 1: a real slice. Okay, okay, yeah, okay, So what did
- 2:24Speaker 1: you cook in the kitchen when you were struggling growth
- 2:27Speaker 1: ship like way worse than dollars. Like what I would
- 2:30Speaker 1: get this is I had a three dollar meal I
- 2:32Speaker 1: would do every night when I get home late from
- 2:34Speaker 1: open mics, I would get ramen. I would get like
- 2:38Speaker 1: a can of peas or corn and a cana tuna,
- 2:42Speaker 1: and I would because you got the protein, you got
- 2:45Speaker 1: your veggie, and you got your start, you know what
- 2:46Speaker 1: I mean. And I put that ship together and mix
- 2:49Speaker 1: it up, you know, drain it a little bit, put
- 2:52Speaker 1: it even on a pan a little bit. Okay, Okay,
- 2:54Speaker 1: did you add butter to your like sometimes? Okay, I
- 2:59Speaker 1: used to try to make it moves with a little butter.
- 3:01Speaker 1: But let's just go ahead and try these dollar slices
- 3:03Speaker 1: we had to improvise today because we had to do
- 3:06Speaker 1: the uber eats or however. So we're just gonna eat
- 3:08Speaker 1: a slice of pizza just to kind of try to
- 3:11Speaker 1: get into what you were going through while you were
- 3:13Speaker 1: working your way to the top. So we're gonna take
- 3:15Speaker 1: a bite, all right, all right, mm hmm, Chase the
- 3:20Speaker 1: poverty saying, well, it's good, the pizza's colt. So I
- 3:24Speaker 1: can imagine it was like terrible, it was. It was
- 3:28Speaker 1: just bad. It was bad. I remember like maybe a
- 3:32Speaker 1: year unto your stand up, coming to New York and
- 3:34Speaker 1: you had you were legit like borrowing a dollar from
- 3:38Speaker 1: me to buy a slice because it's real. Yeah, it
- 3:42Speaker 1: was real. So there's one dollar slice place where the
- 3:46Speaker 1: dude you talked to him long enough, he just forget
- 3:48Speaker 1: that you didn't pay, and he just let you walk out.
- 3:52Speaker 1: Me and my boy used to go there all the time. Yeah,
- 3:55Speaker 1: but you guys just chatter him up, just talk to
- 3:57Speaker 1: this naked forever. Let there be a cute girl in there.
- 4:00Speaker 1: He really forget Okay, okay, So tell us what was
- 4:03Speaker 1: going on at that time when you were doing these dollars,
- 4:06Speaker 1: like well, you know, it was like no, um, I
- 4:13Speaker 1: open micing it. You know, you don't get paid to
- 4:15Speaker 1: do open mics. Sometimes you pay to do open mics. Yeah, yeah,
- 4:18Speaker 1: um doing like no exaggeration, like five to thirteen open
- 4:25Speaker 1: mics a day. I leave early in the afternoon, like
- 4:29Speaker 1: two in the afternoon and come home too in the morning.
- 4:33Speaker 1: Just did that for like probably like a year and
- 4:38Speaker 1: a half, two years, and no part of you was like, oh,
- 4:43Speaker 1: I don't know, maybe this isn't for me, or did
- 4:45Speaker 1: you get frustrated. Did you ever have like a day
- 4:46Speaker 1: job or anything? Kind of but not really. I couldn't
- 4:51Speaker 1: keep a day job because it was like to do
- 4:52Speaker 1: that much stand up you had to kind of just
- 4:55Speaker 1: commit to it and be broke. Is like it is
- 4:58Speaker 1: the only way to get really good. I would like
- 5:00Speaker 1: go in and out of day jobs kind of. Remember, man,
- 5:03Speaker 1: I did Postmates and oh you did Postmates Bro's Oh
- 5:08Speaker 1: my god. I don't want to slander a brand on
- 5:11Speaker 1: the podcast. Man, they it's like they you make just
- 5:16Speaker 1: enough money to get hungry from walking around to buy food,
- 5:19Speaker 1: and then your back broke again. And that's just how
- 5:21Speaker 1: it goes. It's like you deliver food that also makes
- 5:24Speaker 1: you hungry because you're like smelling people's food and ship
- 5:27Speaker 1: and then you like, well, I made five dollars off
- 5:28Speaker 1: that I gotta get something to eat. And then you
- 5:30Speaker 1: the five dollars gone and you're like, all right, well
- 5:32Speaker 1: I'll just deliver some more food. And then you deliver
- 5:34Speaker 1: that food, you like, I'm hungry again, and you just
- 5:36Speaker 1: it's like a weird fucking thing you're in. You just
- 5:38Speaker 1: make no profit, Like it's terrible. What other jobs did
- 5:41Speaker 1: you didn't you all like I think your house that
- 5:44Speaker 1: or something. Didn't you do some of those apps? I
- 5:45Speaker 1: would house it, I uh house that. I would I
- 5:50Speaker 1: use this app what was it called task Rabbit, And
- 5:53Speaker 1: I was terrible at making furniture. I would do like
- 5:56Speaker 1: the Ikea Furniture Ship, but I was getting so many
- 5:58Speaker 1: bad reviews. I made a crib and the baby fell
- 6:01Speaker 1: like it was like all funked up and uh. And
- 6:05Speaker 1: then like I was like, all right, well, I'm only
- 6:06Speaker 1: gonna do like pet sitting in house sitting because then
- 6:08Speaker 1: I get to stay in a nice crib and I
- 6:10Speaker 1: get to just chill and I could just charge a lot.
- 6:13Speaker 1: And I was doing it for a very short amount
- 6:14Speaker 1: of time because I was sucking girls in the cribs
- 6:17Speaker 1: and somebody had like a camera something. Somebody found out
- 6:19Speaker 1: I sucked in their crib and it was over. Like
- 6:21Speaker 1: it was like bad reviews all of the ship, and
- 6:24Speaker 1: I was kicked off task rapping task grap It was
- 6:27Speaker 1: making money too, I was making money off task grabbing. Damn. Okay, Okay,
- 6:31Speaker 1: So was there ever a point in your career where
- 6:33Speaker 1: the struggle hit where you had to like possibly reevaluate
- 6:36Speaker 1: or did you have pressure coming in where people were like,
- 6:39Speaker 1: maybe you should just quit and get a day job.
- 6:41Speaker 1: The funny thing is, like I think with stand up
- 6:44Speaker 1: is funny because like people don't care about stand ups
- 6:46Speaker 1: enough to tell them to quit. They just look at
- 6:48Speaker 1: you like you're stupid for even trying. It's like the
- 6:51Speaker 1: idea of them telling you that quit doesn't even come
- 6:53Speaker 1: into their head. They're just like, really, you do stand up,
- 6:55Speaker 1: and they just walk out like that. There's no like
- 6:57Speaker 1: second sentence. I interviewed a couple of comics like Lunell Earthquake,
- 7:03Speaker 1: and one of the things that they have pointed out
- 7:06Speaker 1: which I never even thought about. I don't know if
- 7:08Speaker 1: anyone ever thinks about this when it comes to comedy.
- 7:10Speaker 1: But if you're listening to like your favorite Beyonce or
- 7:12Speaker 1: jay Z record, you go to their concert, you want
- 7:15Speaker 1: to hear the same song you know that you've literally
- 7:18Speaker 1: played in your your CD or your you know, your
- 7:21Speaker 1: AirPods a million times. But with comedy, you never want
- 7:26Speaker 1: to go to a comedy club and hear the same joke.
- 7:28Speaker 1: So I started to think, I think, out of all
- 7:31Speaker 1: the jobs in the entertainment business, yours job has to
- 7:34Speaker 1: be the most stressful because you're dealing with council culture
- 7:38Speaker 1: and you're also dealing with like constantly like re re
- 7:43Speaker 1: re coming up with new materials, So like how do
- 7:46Speaker 1: you find that balance? Like how are you able to
- 7:49Speaker 1: like are you sitting at home? Like I gotta right today,
- 7:51Speaker 1: Like I want to know like a day in the life.
- 7:53Speaker 1: I'm very lucky to be like just a like I'm
- 7:57Speaker 1: a prolific creator. As my management say, um, I come
- 8:01Speaker 1: out my turnover rates really high, but I feel bad
- 8:04Speaker 1: for niggas whose turnover rates aren't high. Like my turn
- 8:07Speaker 1: of rate is very, very high. What do you mean
- 8:08Speaker 1: by turnover rate? Like how quickly I could come up
- 8:11Speaker 1: with new material? Like it's very fast. Like if I
- 8:14Speaker 1: if I do a set on Comedy Central, I could
- 8:16Speaker 1: burn that material. I don't like to, but I could
- 8:19Speaker 1: burn that material and come up with a new set
- 8:21Speaker 1: pretty fast. Now, like every year, at this rate, I'm
- 8:25Speaker 1: probably thirty new minutes a year, which is pretty fast
- 8:28Speaker 1: from my from my point, But at some point when
- 8:30Speaker 1: you're like twenty years and you're like Kevin hart bur
- 8:32Speaker 1: you know these niggas, it's like you should be able
- 8:34Speaker 1: to come up with like an hour a year, which
- 8:36Speaker 1: is nuts. Nuts, but I'm not there yet. Now, when
- 8:39Speaker 1: you release a joke online and it trends, that's technically
- 8:43Speaker 1: considered you're retiring a joke. You're going retiring of a joke.
- 8:47Speaker 1: I'm very on defense about that. I don't know what
- 8:49Speaker 1: do you mean spill it? If I mean it's not
- 8:53Speaker 1: on contract, I don't have to retire it. It's like
- 8:55Speaker 1: one day if a special comes out and there's something
- 8:57Speaker 1: that's online where I feel like, oh this would make
- 8:59Speaker 1: history and especial, I might just delete off the Internet
- 9:01Speaker 1: and put it in the special because it's my content.
- 9:03Speaker 1: I'm the one you shared it. I own it still, Okay. So,
- 9:06Speaker 1: because one of the comics that I had interviewed in
- 9:10Speaker 1: the past has said, like, you know, once you release
- 9:13Speaker 1: a joke, you really shouldn't say it again on stage, Like,
- 9:15Speaker 1: how do you feel about that? I disagree. I highly disagree,
- 9:20Speaker 1: because it's like who's seeing it, even if it goes viral,
- 9:22Speaker 1: even if it's like three million views, which like I
- 9:25Speaker 1: have stand up jokes that have like three million views,
- 9:27Speaker 1: that doesn't mean that like when you do a show,
- 9:30Speaker 1: whoever is there has seen the joke. Your fans have,
- 9:33Speaker 1: for sure, But to me, the concept of putting out
- 9:35Speaker 1: a special or something like that is to gain new fans.
- 9:38Speaker 1: So it's like, your new fans aren't going to be
- 9:39Speaker 1: people that have seen that joke. When you do a
- 9:42Speaker 1: random show at the comedy club, guarantee you the crowd
- 9:44Speaker 1: has not seen that joke. It's just like viral is
- 9:46Speaker 1: not that big now. I would consider so people. Different
- 9:52Speaker 1: people have reached out to me about you and said, okay,
- 9:55Speaker 1: they would compare you to a Chappelle And they say
- 9:57Speaker 1: that bainly because you strategy. You you straddle the almost
- 10:01Speaker 1: cancel culture. Like you say the ship that is like
- 10:05Speaker 1: that's just funny, but like you know, like do you
- 10:09Speaker 1: ever get nervous when you're writing content where it's like
- 10:12Speaker 1: a little bit scary in the cancel culture arrange? Have
- 10:16Speaker 1: you ever faired cancel culture? No? Not not no, not
- 10:20Speaker 1: material what So there's never been a point where you
- 10:23Speaker 1: were like, I like this joke, but I don't know. No,
- 10:27Speaker 1: but I haven't pressured into dropping jokes, which very like
- 10:31Speaker 1: is inner turmoil all the time for me. Can you
- 10:34Speaker 1: give us like an example, I have a joke about
- 10:36Speaker 1: Asian people that I got pressured into dropping once the
- 10:39Speaker 1: Asian hate things started happening, and I was really annoyed
- 10:42Speaker 1: because you're I find it's like the people that get
- 10:44Speaker 1: offended at the jokes aren't the people the joke is about.
- 10:47Speaker 1: It'll be like you write a joke about Indian people
- 10:49Speaker 1: and a whole bunch of white people get mad. You'd
- 10:51Speaker 1: be like, nigg this is even about you and Indian
- 10:53Speaker 1: people smacking their knees. This is so funny. We do
- 10:56Speaker 1: like curry, you know what I mean. Like and it's like,
- 10:58Speaker 1: but the white people be like this is not age,
- 11:00Speaker 1: or like black people be like upset for Spanish people,
- 11:03Speaker 1: Like it's never the people the joke is about. It
- 11:05Speaker 1: a whole bunch of people that feel bad for the
- 11:06Speaker 1: people got it. It's like it's just annoying. Like I
- 11:10Speaker 1: had people tell me you dropped the Asian joke, but
- 11:12Speaker 1: when I would do it after the shows, Asian people
- 11:15Speaker 1: be taking pictures with me. They'd be like, man, the
- 11:16Speaker 1: joke was so great. Finally, some are you talking about us,
- 11:19Speaker 1: like this is what you talked about. That makes sense
- 11:20Speaker 1: because if black people I'm just speaking from black perspective,
- 11:23Speaker 1: if we hear a joke that's clown of black people,
- 11:27Speaker 1: we're gonna laugh, So I'm gonna throw a wild card
- 11:42Speaker 1: in here. Um, well, I got a couple more. I
- 11:44Speaker 1: got some questions before I thought the wild card just
- 11:47Speaker 1: remind me to to have a wild card in here.
- 11:48Speaker 1: That's probably not gonna want to answer, but um, has
- 11:52Speaker 1: there ever been like another comedian that gave you some
- 11:55Speaker 1: advice that like was pivotal? I know you personally told
- 11:59Speaker 1: me stuff about Bill Burr is my favorite comic, like
- 12:02Speaker 1: one of my favorite comps, or gave me great advice. Yeah,
- 12:04Speaker 1: can you share some of that advice? I was about
- 12:07Speaker 1: to tape something for Comedy Central. It's like my first
- 12:09Speaker 1: like straight up stand up set didn't have to do
- 12:11Speaker 1: with the TV shows like straight up they were I mean,
- 12:14Speaker 1: technically it's a show, but it's like they were just
- 12:15Speaker 1: doing stand upon it And I was super excited, but
- 12:19Speaker 1: I was like nervous about what material to choose. Is
- 12:21Speaker 1: like fresh out of the pandemic. Pandemic is still going on,
- 12:23Speaker 1: so I was rusty, and uh I asked him. I
- 12:27Speaker 1: was like, man, there's certain bits I want to like
- 12:29Speaker 1: say for a special one day, And he was like,
- 12:31Speaker 1: what are you saving for? Like like your he just
- 12:33Speaker 1: see me do stand up. He's like, you're funny. He's
- 12:35Speaker 1: like believing your talent. He's like believing your talent. He's like,
- 12:37Speaker 1: if you believe in your talent, that means do your
- 12:40Speaker 1: best material because you could die tomorrow and this will
- 12:42Speaker 1: be your legacy and then come up with new material
- 12:46Speaker 1: and it should be better than the previous material because
- 12:48Speaker 1: it's new. So like, don't ever hoard material for a
- 12:52Speaker 1: rainy day because that ra any day may never might
- 12:54Speaker 1: never come. And he's like, that's all ego telling you, like,
- 12:56Speaker 1: I'm gonna have a special one day. I'm gonna have this.
- 12:58Speaker 1: It's like, you don't know that you have an opportunity
- 13:00Speaker 1: right now, put out your best ship and then move forward. Yea.
- 13:06Speaker 1: He was like, if you if every chance, he said,
- 13:09Speaker 1: every chance you get to be on TV or do
- 13:10Speaker 1: stand up in front of a mass audience, that's a
- 13:13Speaker 1: chance to get fans, to get industreated, like you to
- 13:16Speaker 1: get everything to work in your favorite career. Wise, so
- 13:19Speaker 1: do your best ship, Like don't hold back. It was
- 13:23Speaker 1: really good advice because I was about to hold back.
- 13:24Speaker 1: Is there anybody else that gave you something that was
- 13:27Speaker 1: like stuck out? There's so many I had a comics,
- 13:30Speaker 1: tell me. Derek Gaines, he told me never played to
- 13:32Speaker 1: the back of the room. That was big early in
- 13:34Speaker 1: my career. That means don't play to the comics. So
- 13:37Speaker 1: some comedians do stand up the back of the room.
- 13:40Speaker 1: The idea of the back of the room is like
- 13:41Speaker 1: comedians will hang out in the back of the room.
- 13:42Speaker 1: They don't say they hang in the back room because
- 13:44Speaker 1: there's no seeds for comedians. And some comedians will very
- 13:47Speaker 1: much try to make the comedians in the back of
- 13:49Speaker 1: the room laugh and it's like because it's like it's
- 13:52Speaker 1: almost high school. It's like very like I'm the I'm
- 13:55Speaker 1: funny you guys, right, But the crowd would be like
- 13:57Speaker 1: because crowds and comics don't laugh at this aime ship. Yeah,
- 14:01Speaker 1: So like that was very good advice. He was like,
- 14:03Speaker 1: comics will never pay your bills, like these niggs to
- 14:05Speaker 1: dap you up after the show. They're not gonna pay
- 14:07Speaker 1: your bills. The people in the crowd are gonna pay
- 14:08Speaker 1: your bills one day. Now, what's like the worst situation
- 14:12Speaker 1: you had when it came to hey, Because I'd imagine
- 14:14Speaker 1: that the more successful you get, there's gotta be little
- 14:17Speaker 1: issues of hate or something that creeps in, right, I mean,
- 14:22Speaker 1: comics talk shit, but comics are always gonna talk shit.
- 14:24Speaker 1: I don't I don't really face any crazy Hey, I'll
- 14:27Speaker 1: tell you what when I did that, Comedy Central said
- 14:30Speaker 1: that burging me advice one. I did a joke about
- 14:32Speaker 1: white women getting shot by the cops, and two days
- 14:35Speaker 1: later after it got released, the insurrection happened and the
- 14:38Speaker 1: white lady got shot by like like a security guard
- 14:42Speaker 1: or something. He wasn't even like a cop, but he
- 14:44Speaker 1: was like a security guard for like the capital or whatever.
- 14:46Speaker 1: And man, they was on the internet acting like I
- 14:48Speaker 1: was psychic or Illuminati, like they it's so dumb, like
- 14:52Speaker 1: everybody is so conspiracy theorists about anyone in show business,
- 14:55Speaker 1: like so like she got shot and they was like,
- 14:58Speaker 1: you know that comedian just talked about it, and and
- 15:00Speaker 1: then it happened real mysterious, like real type type of energy.
- 15:03Speaker 1: And I was like, niggad, I'm not like, I don't know,
- 15:05Speaker 1: I'm sorry, like it's just a joke. So, speaking of
- 15:10Speaker 1: like how people respond to certain things, I have to
- 15:14Speaker 1: ask you, Um, I don't even know if I even
- 15:16Speaker 1: asked you about your view on the whole. And I
- 15:20Speaker 1: don't want to bring it up. I really am. I
- 15:22Speaker 1: want to retire just for the sake of everyone's health,
- 15:24Speaker 1: mental health in this. But it came to the Will
- 15:27Speaker 1: Smith Chris Rock slap fuck Will Smith firmly, I will
- 15:31Speaker 1: say that on the podcast Fuck Will Smith. Yeah, I
- 15:34Speaker 1: don't care fuck Will Smith. Why Uh, that's he knows.
- 15:39Speaker 1: He knows at this point he was wrong. If I
- 15:42Speaker 1: say funk Will Smith. And I'm a comic, he if
- 15:44Speaker 1: he was to ever see this, he wouldn't be shocked.
- 15:47Speaker 1: He's had other people say fucking I'm sure since but
- 15:50Speaker 1: I mean, um, it's terrible for stand up Like you
- 15:53Speaker 1: are sending a precedent where it's like, if you get
- 15:56Speaker 1: offended up something that comedian says, you can literally physically
- 15:58Speaker 1: attack them. That's crazy. And not only is it sending
- 16:02Speaker 1: the president, but it's like the level of precedent is
- 16:04Speaker 1: like you smacked our king, Like there's nobody bigger than
- 16:07Speaker 1: Chris rock Like Chris Rock. You are smacking stand up.
- 16:10Speaker 1: You are saying like if Chris Rocking gets smacked, any
- 16:13Speaker 1: of these niggs can get smacked because he's the he's
- 16:15Speaker 1: the biggest and the best, he's the most legendary, so
- 16:17Speaker 1: it's like, if you smack him, it's open season for everybody.
- 16:22Speaker 1: So okay, so I understood, although he's working, it's like
- 16:27Speaker 1: he smacked him while he's working, Like I don't understand.
- 16:29Speaker 1: It's like his job is to do what he did.
- 16:32Speaker 1: I definitely it was so funny because I actually don't
- 16:34Speaker 1: watch I think it was a m it was the Oscars.
- 16:37Speaker 1: The Oscars. I'm not one of those people that watch
- 16:39Speaker 1: the Oscars. You know. My husband is like an actor,
- 16:42Speaker 1: actor slash comedian, so he lives for that stuff. And
- 16:45Speaker 1: the one time I'm watching it, I see the slap
- 16:48Speaker 1: and I'm like, oh, is this is what I've been missing?
- 16:50Speaker 1: Like I said, oh my god, I thought it was stage.
- 16:53Speaker 1: I was like immediately went to my phone because I
- 16:56Speaker 1: was like YouTube will have clips in seconds. I'm like refreshing,
- 16:58Speaker 1: like what's that real? And I was like, oh ship,
- 17:01Speaker 1: I need to watch this show more. Like I did
- 17:03Speaker 1: not know, but you know, of course I understood the perspective.
- 17:06Speaker 1: You can't hit a comment, you know, there's multiple reasons.
- 17:10Speaker 1: But then the softer side of me was like, you know,
- 17:13Speaker 1: Will Smith's been in the game a long time and
- 17:16Speaker 1: there's so much pressure, and especially like it's one thing
- 17:19Speaker 1: when you're like Cat Williams. Cat Williams has his bad boy,
- 17:22Speaker 1: So when Cat Williams gets in trouble and goes to jail,
- 17:25Speaker 1: it's like we're like, oh, it's Cat Williams, you know.
- 17:27Speaker 1: But Will Smith has this like squeaky clean personality. And
- 17:32Speaker 1: I felt like, you know, I don't want to know.
- 17:34Speaker 1: I know us as women, we put a lot of
- 17:36Speaker 1: pressure on our guys, like like, you know you're in
- 17:38Speaker 1: a great relationship when you can yell at your guy
- 17:40Speaker 1: and he just like shrugs his shoulders like whatever, like
- 17:42Speaker 1: you know, she's crazy today it's Tuesday, like for real.
- 17:48Speaker 1: But you never know because sometimes women we put our
- 17:51Speaker 1: men under pressure. So I don't know, like I don't
- 17:53Speaker 1: know what was going on in their relationship for him
- 17:54Speaker 1: to like just snap. But I definitely think that that
- 17:58Speaker 1: in the industry, so much pressure that it's like I
- 18:02Speaker 1: think him saying I'm sorry for me was enough to
- 18:06Speaker 1: be like that's fine. We're human, Like I've snapped on
- 18:09Speaker 1: people that I Here's my issue with the apology, right
- 18:12Speaker 1: is it came months later and that night he apologized
- 18:16Speaker 1: to the whole academy and all the actors. But he
- 18:18Speaker 1: didn't apologize to Chris Rock. It's like, literally, the night
- 18:21Speaker 1: you smacked that nigger, you had a chance to apologize
- 18:23Speaker 1: to him, and you avoided apologizing to him. You apologize
- 18:26Speaker 1: to everybody else in the room, you didn't apologize to
- 18:29Speaker 1: the person you smacked. To me, if you wait months
- 18:32Speaker 1: and then apologize, it's like, okay, like I hear it.
- 18:35Speaker 1: I mean good, it's not a bad thing. Well, now
- 18:38Speaker 1: I know if I piss you off, just apologize within
- 18:41Speaker 1: a certain time frame. I mean, he literally smacked this
- 18:43Speaker 1: dude on National TV. Apologize that night. If you're gonna
- 18:47Speaker 1: apologize to anyone, Yeah, I feel like every comic is
- 18:51Speaker 1: going to agree with you, because most most comics, you'd
- 18:53Speaker 1: be surprised. But most comics, well there's some that are
- 18:56Speaker 1: like comics that are like, well, you know, will you
- 18:58Speaker 1: know his wife been like shut up, man, I mean,
- 19:02Speaker 1: if you gotta think, Will Smith contributed a lot of
- 19:05Speaker 1: happiness to a lot of kids. I love Will Smith.
- 19:09Speaker 1: That's my favorite TV show ever. Yeah yeah, but now
- 19:12Speaker 1: used to be my favorite actor. To that smack, I
- 19:16Speaker 1: think you'll forgive him. I think so if he went
- 19:19Speaker 1: do you think he can even walk into a comedy
- 19:21Speaker 1: club right now. Probably not. I mean, he could walk
- 19:23Speaker 1: into anywhere a celebrity. I'm saying, though, do you think
- 19:26Speaker 1: he would get like booze or like some kind of
- 19:29Speaker 1: shade from comics. I'll tell you what. I've seen rock
- 19:31Speaker 1: walk into a comedy club since, and I've never heard
- 19:34Speaker 1: innovation like the ovation they gave Rock Terrorist came to
- 19:36Speaker 1: my eyes. I've never been so moved by innovation. I
- 19:40Speaker 1: couldn't even imagine what he was feeling. Yeah, Like I
- 19:43Speaker 1: think fans of comedy very much are like, we love you, Chris,
- 19:47Speaker 1: Sorry that happened, you know. It's also just like a
- 19:50Speaker 1: bully move, like look at Chris Rocket, look at Will Smith,
- 19:53Speaker 1: Like I don't think Will would. I know that we've
- 19:55Speaker 1: all heard this, but like, I don't think we would
- 19:57Speaker 1: have done that to fucking like insert if Bernie Mack
- 19:59Speaker 1: was still alive or you know what I'm saying. Like
- 20:01Speaker 1: he very much like picked who to do it too,
- 20:04Speaker 1: And it's like that to me, rubs me the wrong way.
- 20:06Speaker 1: But that's the thing. It seemed very impulsive, So I
- 20:09Speaker 1: don't know if it was like one of those things
- 20:11Speaker 1: where he was like I'm gonna get Chris. How implosive
- 20:14Speaker 1: was it? He laughed at the joke first, like he
- 20:17Speaker 1: laughed at the joke, and then he looked at Jada
- 20:19Speaker 1: and he was like, that's what I think women put
- 20:22Speaker 1: men like you just never know what's going on in
- 20:24Speaker 1: someone's relationship. I think that, Like I'm not saying she
- 20:27Speaker 1: used to blame, but you never know, like what is
- 20:31Speaker 1: going on that contributing Maybe he was clowning at home
- 20:34Speaker 1: and I don't know. Stuff took the time, but you
- 20:36Speaker 1: want this man. Is The sad thing about it is
- 20:38Speaker 1: it's truly just the disrespect of the art form because
- 20:40Speaker 1: it's like, well, is the same person who months prior
- 20:43Speaker 1: to this happening had a whole series about how you
- 20:45Speaker 1: want to learn how to do stand up and he
- 20:47Speaker 1: invited all these comedians on and help him. And he
- 20:49Speaker 1: was getting into the stand up art form and he
- 20:51Speaker 1: loves it. And I don't want to do it, but
- 20:52Speaker 1: I just want to do it as a hobby. I
- 20:53Speaker 1: want to get to experience it. It's like you love
- 20:57Speaker 1: stand up, but you don't love it enough to respect
- 20:59Speaker 1: it as like a respect people like craft and work,
- 21:02Speaker 1: you know what I mean, Like you wouldn't smack anybody
- 21:04Speaker 1: else were they working like you have to. First of all,
- 21:07Speaker 1: he's the best worker that we have. Yeah, yeah, it's
- 21:09Speaker 1: like the most professional stand up comedian is Chris Rock.
- 21:12Speaker 1: That's why he hit Will back. No, he handled it well.
- 21:16Speaker 1: But speaking of I don't want to get spent too
- 21:18Speaker 1: much time on Will Smith, you know, just a little
- 21:20Speaker 1: smidget because I want to get more out of you. So,
- 21:22Speaker 1: what a lot of you guys don't know is that
- 21:24Speaker 1: Eagle and I have a definitely age difference. We're not
- 21:27Speaker 1: going to say what it is, and so we grew
- 21:29Speaker 1: up a little differently. And so I want to know
- 21:32Speaker 1: a little bit of your backstory because I missed the
- 21:34Speaker 1: chapter of where the inspiration came for you to pursue comedy.
- 21:39Speaker 1: And I also want to know a little bit about
- 21:41Speaker 1: what your childhood was like, Um, everyone told me to
- 21:45Speaker 1: do stand up? How do you want to do this? Ship? Truly,
- 21:48Speaker 1: when you say everybody like, who friends mom, I could
- 21:51Speaker 1: say mom, because we got the same mom. You're the
- 21:53Speaker 1: same parents. But yeah, I left home at six. You
- 21:56Speaker 1: know there's a there's an age difference, But like WHOA
- 22:00Speaker 1: what environment did you grow up in? I'd say um,
- 22:04Speaker 1: you know. Mom was like, uh, it was just me
- 22:07Speaker 1: and mom. It's just me and mom. Mom was going
- 22:08Speaker 1: through a lot of mental stuff and Mom would cry
- 22:12Speaker 1: a lot, like every day, and I'd come home from
- 22:15Speaker 1: school and just tell her like funny stories literally from
- 22:17Speaker 1: like elementary school, and she was just crack up, start laughing.
- 22:21Speaker 1: And we watched Comic View all the time, We watched friends,
- 22:23Speaker 1: we watched anything that was funny kind of get through
- 22:25Speaker 1: the pain. And she would always be like, you funnier
- 22:28Speaker 1: than everybody on TV, Like you cracking me up with
- 22:29Speaker 1: your little school stories. She's like, you could do that,
- 22:32Speaker 1: you could do We watched Comic View, which isn't you know,
- 22:34Speaker 1: but whatever, it's not the best, but we watched Comic
- 22:36Speaker 1: You She'd be like, you could do that, you could
- 22:38Speaker 1: do better than them. But I was like a little kid,
- 22:40Speaker 1: I'm like, no, this is stupid, Like she's crazy, she
- 22:42Speaker 1: doesn't know what she's talking about. But then in school,
- 22:45Speaker 1: like I started having friends. I would hang out with colleague.
- 22:48Speaker 1: I always give him credit first friend that He was like,
- 22:51Speaker 1: nig you're stand into comedian. You just don't know, Yeah,
- 22:53Speaker 1: you're funnier than everybody. And that was like young that
- 22:56Speaker 1: was like third, like real young, and uh it started
- 23:00Speaker 1: spiraling where other friends with kind of hair colleagues say,
- 23:03Speaker 1: or they start feeling the same way, you know, you
- 23:05Speaker 1: should do stand up, you should do stand up. And
- 23:06Speaker 1: I always be like, no, no, no no, I'm not a
- 23:07Speaker 1: clown because I didn't respect it. That's an interesting thing
- 23:10Speaker 1: about the art form is it is very not respected
- 23:12Speaker 1: because people just don't know what goes into it. And
- 23:14Speaker 1: I originally didn't respect it. I was like, I'm not
- 23:17Speaker 1: a clown. That was my response. But then I was like,
- 23:20Speaker 1: you know, like twenty one and like what am I
- 23:22Speaker 1: gonna do? And it could be homeless, like I didn't
- 23:24Speaker 1: have anything to do with my life. I was in
- 23:25Speaker 1: community college. Like I was like, you go to college
- 23:28Speaker 1: and you're sitting Okay, so you're sitting there in class
- 23:31Speaker 1: and you're still debating like the hallway Holly that girls.
- 23:33Speaker 1: I never went to class, So then where does this
- 23:36Speaker 1: epiphany like screw it, I'm gonna try it. Uh. I
- 23:42Speaker 1: was well, when I got out of high school, I
- 23:45Speaker 1: was thinking like something comedy related, but I was really
- 23:47Speaker 1: scared to get on stage. So I was like making
- 23:50Speaker 1: like YouTube videos and like stupid ship like that, but
- 23:53Speaker 1: it wasn't really getting in the track. I was just
- 23:54Speaker 1: scared to get on stage, and uh, Dad took me.
- 24:02Speaker 1: He was like, well, let's go to let's see what
- 24:04Speaker 1: type of stage stuff you might want to do. So
- 24:06Speaker 1: he took me to the U c B at the
- 24:08Speaker 1: time that when it was open is Improv place and
- 24:11Speaker 1: I watched improv is like a Saturday night and I
- 24:13Speaker 1: was like, not this, Like I don't want to be
- 24:15Speaker 1: on the team with a whole bunch of people all happy,
- 24:17Speaker 1: go lucky improv and stuff. Uh. Then he took me
- 24:20Speaker 1: to the Comic Strip and it was late night. My
- 24:24Speaker 1: boy to this day, Jordan Rock Chris is a little brother.
- 24:26Speaker 1: Ironically in this conversation, he was on stage. He's around
- 24:29Speaker 1: my age, and I remember watching him and being like, oh,
- 24:33Speaker 1: he's funny and he's close to my age. I feel
- 24:36Speaker 1: more like maybe this is something. And it got his
- 24:39Speaker 1: info and I started hitting him up every day like, bro,
- 24:42Speaker 1: I'm scared to get on stage. What do you think?
- 24:43Speaker 1: And he's like, let's just try and error, Like you
- 24:45Speaker 1: go up, you try stuff, it doesn't work, fix it,
- 24:47Speaker 1: do it again. And I understand it for months and
- 24:50Speaker 1: then one day I kind of cracked and just tried it.
- 24:53Speaker 1: I hated it quit for three weeks. You convinced me
- 24:55Speaker 1: to get back. I was gonna say, I remember getting
- 24:57Speaker 1: a phone call from you saying like I'm going to
- 24:59Speaker 1: try it, and and you you went up one time.
- 25:01Speaker 1: I think you said no, I'm good, and I was like,
- 25:05Speaker 1: I think my advice was shitty advice kind of. I
- 25:08Speaker 1: was like, just try it three times. You could like
- 25:11Speaker 1: drink and get how you can just figure out how
- 25:13Speaker 1: it is and just try at least three times before
- 25:15Speaker 1: you quit. And then like you did stand up like
- 25:18Speaker 1: one more time and you were like, yeah, I'm good.
- 25:20Speaker 1: You never did drugs to do it either. All it
- 25:22Speaker 1: took was one great response from the crowd. I remember
- 25:25Speaker 1: the joke. What was the joke? It was, I just
- 25:29Speaker 1: turned twenty one. I don't drink, so I google what
- 25:32Speaker 1: you can do at your age, and you can adopt kids.
- 25:35Speaker 1: So I'm gonna adopt the seventeen year old and boss
- 25:36Speaker 1: them around. And it was like like bit about how
- 25:39Speaker 1: I basically adopted Nigga who's basically my age, and like yeah,
- 25:45Speaker 1: like a huge response. People clapped and ship and I
- 25:48Speaker 1: was like this is like I want to do stand up.
- 25:51Speaker 1: This is great. So when you started doing stand up,
- 26:10Speaker 1: did a lot of girls enter the scene like, oh
- 26:12Speaker 1: my god, Like because I've seen I've gone out with you.
- 26:14Speaker 1: I almost walked into rooms with disclaimers like I'm his sister.
- 26:17Speaker 1: Definitely don't want him. You can have him type attitude,
- 26:20Speaker 1: like do you think that being a comic, there's a
- 26:23Speaker 1: lot of like girl fans or with every comic or
- 26:27Speaker 1: just just select for you. I'll say this, I got
- 26:30Speaker 1: pussy before stand up, Like there's a lot of comedians
- 26:33Speaker 1: who definitely like lean on. There's a lot of people
- 26:36Speaker 1: in show business in general. I feel who lean on
- 26:38Speaker 1: like I'm this person and girls like that, and now
- 26:42Speaker 1: I lean on that to get girls. To me, that's
- 26:44Speaker 1: just toxic and very tricky borders. I don't do that.
- 26:48Speaker 1: Like I was getting girls before stand up, get girls
- 26:51Speaker 1: after stand up during stand up, like it's not about
- 26:53Speaker 1: stand up. Stand up does help, yeah, yeah, but you
- 26:57Speaker 1: know I was chilling before. So I don't know where
- 27:01Speaker 1: we are time wise, but um, but I do want
- 27:04Speaker 1: to know is there any interactions would say someone that
- 27:07Speaker 1: you looked up to that was like oh bad, Yeah,
- 27:12Speaker 1: Like was there a celebrity and you can name drop.
- 27:15Speaker 1: I'm not doing that. That's okay. Well, can you just
- 27:19Speaker 1: tell trying to rule my career every celebrity i'm has
- 27:25Speaker 1: been wonderful. Well, celebrities aren't like someone because they're not
- 27:30Speaker 1: like agents managers. But I guess they can still hate
- 27:33Speaker 1: on you a little bit, like what if they want
- 27:35Speaker 1: you to go on road or something. Now that comedians
- 27:37Speaker 1: are the most helpful people in my career, everything I can,
- 27:39Speaker 1: everything I've gotten in my career I can attribute to
- 27:41Speaker 1: a comedian. Industry has not given me ship straight up.
- 27:44Speaker 1: I'm sure they hate to hear this on camera, but
- 27:46Speaker 1: it's the truth fixative. You guys don't like it. Like
- 27:49Speaker 1: comedians have helped me get everything, even stuff I've gotten
- 27:52Speaker 1: from industry, it's been like started through a comedian down lines.
- 27:56Speaker 1: At some point they got my foot in the door.
- 27:59Speaker 1: So when you're gonna tape, when you taped Comedy Central,
- 28:03Speaker 1: you get how does it work? Like sell us the scene,
- 28:05Speaker 1: Like tell us what you're doing when you get the
- 28:07Speaker 1: phone call that you're about to do this, Like I
- 28:09Speaker 1: want to know all the details and emotions. Three or
- 28:12Speaker 1: four times I've done three, Three or four times I've
- 28:14Speaker 1: done Comedy Central. The first time I was I did
- 28:19Speaker 1: This Week at the Seller TV show that was on
- 28:21Speaker 1: Comedy Central for a couple of seasons. I was the
- 28:23Speaker 1: new comic at the Seller. That was like getting all
- 28:25Speaker 1: the spots right, new young guy. Everybody loved me. ST
- 28:28Speaker 1: at the Seller loved me, and it was very much
- 28:31Speaker 1: just like they were taping it. It was a Seller show.
- 28:34Speaker 1: They were pushing all these comics on ST that weren't
- 28:37Speaker 1: past the Seller. I was someone who was passed, who
- 28:39Speaker 1: was a new young buck. I they were like st
- 28:42Speaker 1: kind of helped book the dates, so she threw me
- 28:44Speaker 1: a bunch of dates for tapings. But that doesn't mean
- 28:46Speaker 1: you're gonna get on. You have to kill. You have
- 28:48Speaker 1: to be topical. I killed was topical got on and
- 28:53Speaker 1: like I would love to say more about like my
- 28:55Speaker 1: little ideas and like what went on that helped me
- 28:58Speaker 1: get on, but I'm not gonna do that, But I
- 28:59Speaker 1: will say I killed. I got on. It came out great,
- 29:02Speaker 1: very happy. What was your emotions at the time, though, like,
- 29:06Speaker 1: especially as your first Comedy Central, Like what were you
- 29:09Speaker 1: so nervous? I was so nervous. I remember the first
- 29:13Speaker 1: hyping that got on. I fucking hate cringeworthy to this
- 29:17Speaker 1: day just looking at it. Oh, I gotta find that
- 29:20Speaker 1: I did a joke about um because it's all topical.
- 29:23Speaker 1: We get to sell her, which, by the way, super
- 29:26Speaker 1: hectic the way they make us right, it's literally it's
- 29:29Speaker 1: like the day of they give you the topic, you
- 29:31Speaker 1: gotta write a joke and then doing your front of
- 29:33Speaker 1: a live audience. So the joke I did was about
- 29:37Speaker 1: how Trump had pardoned asap Rocky. Oh, okay, okay, I
- 29:42Speaker 1: think the joke, the joke hit. People like it, But
- 29:46Speaker 1: I watched it and I'm like, boy, did I stumbled
- 29:48Speaker 1: through that wording because I was so nervous. I was
- 29:50Speaker 1: so frea nervous. It's like my first time. I don't think.
- 29:55Speaker 1: I definitely don't remember seeing any stumbles. Oh, every time
- 29:58Speaker 1: I see it, I noticed, I'm like, oh what then?
- 30:00Speaker 1: Was I saying? Do you watch all your stuff? Because
- 30:02Speaker 1: I know some comics that will not watch like they're taped. Really,
- 30:08Speaker 1: I'm gonna be honest, I don't think Darius watched his Netflix. Really,
- 30:11Speaker 1: I will say it say it so it's not easy,
- 30:15Speaker 1: but I watched really are you now? Are you one
- 30:18Speaker 1: of the comics that still record all your sets, so
- 30:20Speaker 1: you don't records the audio, okay, and do you play
- 30:24Speaker 1: them all back? I used to when I was like
- 30:26Speaker 1: starting out, I'm real bad at it. Now I'm real
- 30:28Speaker 1: bad actually listening to them. But occasionally if I need
- 30:31Speaker 1: something like last night you saw me, I did a
- 30:33Speaker 1: new tag off the top of the head that was crisp,
- 30:36Speaker 1: like it perfect and hit. I'm going to go back
- 30:38Speaker 1: and listen and figure out how I worded that. Now,
- 30:42Speaker 1: you you don't do open mics anymore? Correct? Now when
- 30:45Speaker 1: you have a new joke, are you working it out
- 30:48Speaker 1: during your paid sets? Yeah? Oh wow, that's good. That's good. Yeah,
- 30:54Speaker 1: you're you're you're extremely confident in like you know, at
- 31:00Speaker 1: this point, I'm confident that I can make any set
- 31:03Speaker 1: go well. So, like, you know, you got a new joke.
- 31:06Speaker 1: Depending on the room you in, you might just do
- 31:09Speaker 1: new jokes, you know what I mean, Like, you're so
- 31:10Speaker 1: confident in that room. But like if I'm at the
- 31:13Speaker 1: seller or something like, that's a high pressure room. It's
- 31:15Speaker 1: like I'll throw it towards the middle of the set.
- 31:18Speaker 1: Maybe you know what I mean, or or it won't
- 31:19Speaker 1: be the first time I've said it. Maybe I said
- 31:21Speaker 1: it a couple other times in other places. But either way,
- 31:24Speaker 1: if the joke goes bad, I'm confident in my skills
- 31:26Speaker 1: now that one joke going bad isn't going to ruin
- 31:29Speaker 1: the set. I can quickly flip it into something that
- 31:32Speaker 1: kills and then just kill for us a set. So
- 31:35Speaker 1: for new comics, like what's a day in the life
- 31:37Speaker 1: of a comic that's arrived? Uh, waking up whenever you'd like,
- 31:44Speaker 1: um and uh, you go out to night and go
- 31:48Speaker 1: just It depends where you live too. I mean in
- 31:50Speaker 1: New York it's like literally every day you're working and
- 31:53Speaker 1: you're doing multiple sets to night, So like what hours
- 31:56Speaker 1: are you working? Like like eight pm? Too? Like three pm?
- 31:59Speaker 1: Like what are your hours? I can leave the crib
- 32:02Speaker 1: around seven some nights and get home at two in
- 32:05Speaker 1: the morning. Um, or I could leave some nights at
- 32:08Speaker 1: nine and get home at like midnight. It depends on
- 32:10Speaker 1: the night, but usually the earliest I'll be out of
- 32:14Speaker 1: the crib used on average is like seven, and the
- 32:16Speaker 1: latest I'll be in the crib Now that I got
- 32:18Speaker 1: a girl, it's like it's like two three okay, okay,
- 32:24Speaker 1: really I remember coming to New York a couple of
- 32:27Speaker 1: times and hanging with you. I tried. I tried very
- 32:30Speaker 1: hard to hang out with him and be that supportive sister.
- 32:33Speaker 1: When he comes to l A, I call myself like
- 32:35Speaker 1: his uber driver. This was before he had a license.
- 32:38Speaker 1: Like I would be like, Okay, I'm going to be
- 32:39Speaker 1: a suber driver. His his little cheerleader or his number
- 32:43Speaker 1: one fan, I'd say, and then um. But when I
- 32:46Speaker 1: come to New York, it was almost like I would
- 32:48Speaker 1: have to literally put like a red Bull drip in
- 32:51Speaker 1: my veins because I mean it got to the point
- 32:54Speaker 1: I got to a certain age I was like, look, bro,
- 32:55Speaker 1: just just bring me a chop cheese at a Snapple
- 32:57Speaker 1: like when you get back, because that was your thing
- 33:00Speaker 1: at night. Yeah yeah, and you would get home in
- 33:03Speaker 1: like four or five and that would be like pretty
- 33:06Speaker 1: much my breakfast and your dinner. Yeah for sure. I
- 33:10Speaker 1: mean stand up in New York is like real, Like
- 33:13Speaker 1: there's a reason there's been like TV shows about it
- 33:15Speaker 1: and ship I mean it, it is truly the mecha,
- 33:17Speaker 1: like it's constant. I look at comedians as entrepreneurs because
- 33:22Speaker 1: you know, from an outside perspective, you know you're thinking
- 33:25Speaker 1: about you know, your art, right, you're putting your art out,
- 33:29Speaker 1: but you have to manage like your bookings and your
- 33:31Speaker 1: times and being on time and your negotiations and how
- 33:35Speaker 1: you're gonna like build this career. So it's funny that
- 33:39Speaker 1: you know, from like an audience perspective, you're like, oh,
- 33:41Speaker 1: this guy's just charismatic and he's funny. But you know,
- 33:45Speaker 1: and then you know also the fact that we're like
- 33:47Speaker 1: make me laugh. Like you know, you go to comedy club,
- 33:49Speaker 1: You're like, make me laugh, dude, Like that's why they
- 33:51Speaker 1: serve alcohol, right, But then it's like knowing you guys
- 33:54Speaker 1: up close, it's just like there's so many attributes to
- 33:57Speaker 1: comedy that I'm like, the whole world doesn't even like consider.
- 34:02Speaker 1: And then, like you said, it's almost like people just
- 34:05Speaker 1: don't respect the craft, even my I was thinking about
- 34:08Speaker 1: the entrepreneur entrepreneurial level the other day because I was
- 34:11Speaker 1: I was talking I was talking about girl. I was
- 34:13Speaker 1: talking to her about, um, how comics like that aren't
- 34:16Speaker 1: getting doing doing standard for a living, can't like some
- 34:19Speaker 1: of them can't wrap their head around or put the
- 34:23Speaker 1: energy into the concept that like the way you turn
- 34:26Speaker 1: this into how you pay your bills is a slow
- 34:28Speaker 1: build of like, Okay, I'm making this much amount every
- 34:32Speaker 1: month guaranteed. Okay, now next month, if I add these rooms,
- 34:35Speaker 1: these comedy clubs, I'll be making that much a month
- 34:37Speaker 1: every guaranteed. You know what I mean. It's like, eventually
- 34:40Speaker 1: you get to a point where you're guarantee that you're
- 34:41Speaker 1: going to bring in a certain amount every month because
- 34:44Speaker 1: you've just built it that way. Like my earliest books
- 34:47Speaker 1: of like counting every month. I was making like a
- 34:49Speaker 1: hundred and sixty bucks in January, eighty bucks in February.
- 34:53Speaker 1: You know what I mean, for the whole month, for
- 34:55Speaker 1: the whole month, but was for The thing is when
- 35:00Speaker 1: you're doing what you love, like you you counting those
- 35:03Speaker 1: twenty dollars, you know what I mean? Like, damn made
- 35:06Speaker 1: this month off? Stand up, I'm fucking made it. My
- 35:08Speaker 1: god good. Were the comedy clubs feeding you? Because most times,
- 35:12Speaker 1: when I know, these com clubs don't feed you until
- 35:16Speaker 1: they give you half off. Oh dagny. Occasionally you get fed,
- 35:21Speaker 1: but by the time you getting fed by comedy clubs,
- 35:22Speaker 1: you already got enough money to pay for your own ship.
- 35:24Speaker 1: But in the beginning, when you're starting, they don't give
- 35:27Speaker 1: a funk. They like, yeah, do this stand up? How
- 35:29Speaker 1: long did it take you to go from I mean,
- 35:31Speaker 1: we really want this transparency, but like, I know you've
- 35:34Speaker 1: been at this for a while, but how long did
- 35:36Speaker 1: it take you to go from eighty dollars a month
- 35:40Speaker 1: to get to where you're at where you're like, you know,
- 35:43Speaker 1: I know you're doing well. Surprisingly not that long like
- 35:49Speaker 1: a year or two. Okay, it's a year. Well, I
- 35:52Speaker 1: mean for most people like living on eighty dollars a
- 35:54Speaker 1: month for years, but I mean it feels like forever.
- 35:57Speaker 1: But it didn't feel like that to you. Don't feel
- 35:59Speaker 1: like that, especially because just like you know, it's like
- 36:01Speaker 1: eighty and then it's like you hit a certain point
- 36:04Speaker 1: in the year you're making like two hundred dollars a month.
- 36:06Speaker 1: But you gotta think about it. That's like a ducking
- 36:08Speaker 1: upgrading your one. You feel like you damn I'm doing
- 36:12Speaker 1: something like a month like you feel because you gotta think.
- 36:15Speaker 1: This is how I used to say. It's my comedian friends,
- 36:17Speaker 1: I'd be like, nigked if you had someone tell me
- 36:20Speaker 1: this too. They were like, he's at the time Nico
- 36:22Speaker 1: told me this, so I'm actually stealing from him He's like,
- 36:25Speaker 1: if you make four dollars a month, that's a metro card. Boom,
- 36:30Speaker 1: that's a bill paid off jokes, you know what I mean.
- 36:35Speaker 1: You make a hundred dollars a month, that could be
- 36:37Speaker 1: dollar slices all month. You know what. It just it
- 36:40Speaker 1: just adds up and before you know, you're like, oh,
- 36:43Speaker 1: I'm paying rent, I'm paying for food, real food, metal card,
- 36:47Speaker 1: you know what I mean? Before you don't you like
- 36:48Speaker 1: I could get some sneakers. You're actually making money, you
- 36:51Speaker 1: got paid taxes. Yeah, Now, there was never a point
- 36:55Speaker 1: in your career where you thought, nah, no, okay, effects
- 37:00Speaker 1: so okay, okay, So what piece of advice would you
- 37:05Speaker 1: give to a comic coming into the game. Just worry
- 37:10Speaker 1: about being funny. Worry about being funny for real. Just
- 37:15Speaker 1: do as much stand up as you can. Worry about
- 37:17Speaker 1: being funny. And if you suck and you're terrible after
- 37:22Speaker 1: years and years, after like five years, nigga quit now.
- 37:26Speaker 1: But wait, no, I agree. So I'm just curious now
- 37:29Speaker 1: that you say that, because I meet guys that are
- 37:31Speaker 1: like rappers or they think they're they're rappers, you know,
- 37:37Speaker 1: but passion, but you know, like they're like not good
- 37:40Speaker 1: rappers and they're at it for like ten years. You know,
- 37:42Speaker 1: you meet that forty five year old guys selling CDs.
- 37:44Speaker 1: I don't know why guys are still selling CDs on there.
- 37:47Speaker 1: I don't know why nobody's playing the CD playing. I
- 37:51Speaker 1: feel so bad in Los Angeles and they'll be harassing
- 37:55Speaker 1: signing CDs and I'm like, where are they gonna play this?
- 37:58Speaker 1: Where are they going to play I haven't seen a
- 38:00Speaker 1: CD player or DV actually, I don't even know where
- 38:03Speaker 1: he thinks burn the CDs at record. But when you
- 38:09Speaker 1: see these forty year old guys that are still rapp
- 38:11Speaker 1: and you're like, you know, like I used to have
- 38:14Speaker 1: a rule, like I wouldnt even date someone in the industry.
- 38:16Speaker 1: I didn't want to run lines, I didn't want to
- 38:17Speaker 1: do any of that stuff, you know. But with comedy,
- 38:21Speaker 1: like even seeing your growth, you were funny, you were
- 38:23Speaker 1: always funny, but your level of funny right now is
- 38:30Speaker 1: like I describe Eagle, and it's not because he's my
- 38:32Speaker 1: baby brother, because I have no problem keeping it real
- 38:34Speaker 1: with people. Were just avoiding the conversation to not keep
- 38:37Speaker 1: it real with people. But but when I describe you,
- 38:43Speaker 1: I'm like, oh, he's going to be a legend. He's
- 38:45Speaker 1: going to be up there with the Richard Priors because
- 38:47Speaker 1: of the style of comedy, Like, I have no doubt
- 38:49Speaker 1: like the way you write, and I would love to
- 38:51Speaker 1: know before we close out, like how you like what
- 38:55Speaker 1: your writing processes. Like, I don't know if you're eating
- 38:57Speaker 1: lunch with your girlfriend and she does something quirky and
- 38:59Speaker 1: you're like me, write about that ship, or or you're
- 39:02Speaker 1: joking with your homies and then you make a joke
- 39:05Speaker 1: and then you write it. I would love to know,
- 39:06Speaker 1: like genuinely, like you asking right now because I thought
- 39:09Speaker 1: you was gonna say yeah, I I. Well, there's two ways.
- 39:17Speaker 1: So one way is if we're chilling, were talking and
- 39:20Speaker 1: I say something funny. I've gotten to a point now
- 39:22Speaker 1: where I could tell the difference between like funny and
- 39:25Speaker 1: convo funny and funny that I could actually translate on
- 39:28Speaker 1: stage and kill with. So if I say something funny
- 39:30Speaker 1: and convo and it's that level where I could translate
- 39:32Speaker 1: on stage, I'm like, okay, I'll take that. Also, it
- 39:35Speaker 1: has to be what I care about talking about, because
- 39:37Speaker 1: now I'm at a point where I didn't think a
- 39:39Speaker 1: lot of comedians get to this point most comedians get
- 39:41Speaker 1: to this point. You get to a point where you're
- 39:43Speaker 1: so good to stand up that you could like make
- 39:45Speaker 1: anything funny, Like you could be, like, write a joke
- 39:48Speaker 1: about this napkin, and by the time we get out
- 39:49Speaker 1: of here, by the time you get done with your
- 39:51Speaker 1: next interview, I have ten jokes about that napkin, and
- 39:53Speaker 1: eight of them bitches be funny, but we made challenge them,
- 39:57Speaker 1: but gone for real, for real. But when you get
- 39:59Speaker 1: to that point, you start going, I don't want to
- 40:02Speaker 1: just talk about anything because now it's boring. So you
- 40:05Speaker 1: very much find the ship you care about and the
- 40:07Speaker 1: ship that makes you laugh, and the ship that makes
- 40:09Speaker 1: you go and wonder and think, and you go, I'm
- 40:11Speaker 1: gonna right about that. So like in convo, if I'm
- 40:13Speaker 1: talking about something I care about, something that's fun to me, interesting,
- 40:17Speaker 1: right about that, or like it's popping my head when
- 40:21Speaker 1: I'm on the train, write it down but it has
- 40:26Speaker 1: barely Like I don't write the way I used to.
- 40:28Speaker 1: I used to fill notebooks front and back pages very much,
- 40:33Speaker 1: so like I very much will write down an idea
- 40:36Speaker 1: and then I go on stage and kind of freestyle it,
- 40:38Speaker 1: record the set and keep on shaping it and sculpting
- 40:42Speaker 1: it like Plato, got it, got it all right? All right? Yeah,
- 40:47Speaker 1: I don't know if I missed anything, but I will
- 40:49Speaker 1: tell you this. This is uh, this has been. They
- 40:53Speaker 1: were saying, I'm the best guest you ever had. That's
- 40:55Speaker 1: what they were saying. That was what I was looking
- 40:56Speaker 1: over here. I appreciate you, yo, thank you many did
- 41:00Speaker 1: they say? That's what they said, I'm the best? He said,
- 41:03Speaker 1: five minutes left? They said, top five, top ten minutes left.
- 41:09Speaker 1: Ten minutes left. He said, I what's the time on
- 41:12Speaker 1: the clock. He said, you got no minutes left? He said,
- 41:15Speaker 1: I'm the best. Well, thank you so much for uh
- 41:19Speaker 1: for you know, I've had the dollar slice with you before,
- 41:23Speaker 1: but thank you, thank you for making my life easier
- 41:26Speaker 1: and making this an easy dish. This is the brokest
- 41:30Speaker 1: version because we've got little cups of water with the
- 41:33Speaker 1: slices and we don't have the hot sauce to fake
- 41:35Speaker 1: the pepperoni. Yeah the slice is cold. Yeah yeah no,
- 41:41Speaker 1: but thank you so much. Ego ego with for y'all,
- 41:45Speaker 1: and what's your Instagram ego with official? Thank you Ego
- 41:49Speaker 1: with official if you guys want to catch Ego with
- 41:52Speaker 1: You're more than likely going to have to be in
- 41:54Speaker 1: New York. Otherwise you have to go online stalker's Instagram
- 41:57Speaker 1: find out what city is. I think you can actually
- 42:00Speaker 1: am him. Oh, I do have one last question. I
- 42:02Speaker 1: know we're gonna go over time, but confessions your confessions
- 42:06Speaker 1: on Instagram. I'm not a big Instagram person, but he
- 42:09Speaker 1: has this thing where you go on Instagram and he
- 42:12Speaker 1: tells his fans like confessions. I've never seen it before,
- 42:15Speaker 1: but if you go on Eagles Instagram, his fan base
- 42:18Speaker 1: is absolutely hilarious. It is better than scrolling through Instagram.
- 42:22Speaker 1: When he opens up his confessions, people will go on
- 42:25Speaker 1: there admitting crazy stories. But then sometimes his fans will
- 42:29Speaker 1: interact with the stories and like, a started doing that
- 42:33Speaker 1: and that has nothing to do with me. That's their
- 42:34Speaker 1: own creative yes, and it's funny. It'll be like I
- 42:37Speaker 1: slept with my dad's sister's mom, and then the other
- 42:41Speaker 1: person would be like, I'm the dad's sister's mom and
- 42:44Speaker 1: let me tell you, and the stories take a turn
- 42:48Speaker 1: for the for the best. But I don't think anyone
- 42:51Speaker 1: has a more creative and open fan base. They'd be
- 42:55Speaker 1: admitted to like stealing each other boyfriends sleeping with they
- 42:58Speaker 1: My boy told me, he was like, you need to
- 43:00Speaker 1: talk show the way people open up to you. I
- 43:04Speaker 1: promised following you on Instagram like I would say. When
- 43:08Speaker 1: I see confessions go up, I think it's like what
- 43:10Speaker 1: every thousand followers or something. That's that's the new thing
- 43:13Speaker 1: I've been doing every thousand followers. I'll do confessions, yes,
- 43:16Speaker 1: and he'll be like, you know, if you don't know,
- 43:18Speaker 1: He'll tell them the rules and it is on and popping.
- 43:21Speaker 1: There is no better day than a confessions day on
- 43:23Speaker 1: Eagles stories on Instagram. And I'm not even kidding you.
- 43:27Speaker 1: If you're a fan of like Jerry Springer or any
- 43:29Speaker 1: of the above, it's entertaining, especially when the fans interact
- 43:34Speaker 1: with each other and they just they like feed off
- 43:36Speaker 1: the crazy ass stories. Yeah yeah, yeah, So shout out
- 43:41Speaker 1: you can catch ego with or confessions that ego with
- 43:44Speaker 1: Official um and thank you so much for being my guests,
