- 0:00Hello there. Have you ever wondered how you can incorporate your identity into your
- 0:06life in transition? If so, today's for you.
- 0:09Welcome to Candid Coach Conversations.
- 0:12I'm Kimberly Boyd, founder of Live Life Fully,
- 0:14and today I have with me the most wonderful Tiffany Hughes,
- 0:18certified Live Life Fully coach.
- 0:20Hello, Tiffany.
- 0:21Hello?
- 0:22So Tiffany, I know that you had applied or sent in an application,
- 0:26not really applied, well, I don't know what to call it,
- 0:28Mm.
- 0:29but you sent in
- 0:30a thing to go speak at a conference in Europe.
- 0:34And
- 0:34Yes.
- 0:35I would love for you to tell us about that experience and like how
- 0:39did you get there? What made you decide like I want to go speak?
- 0:43Tell us all about it.
- 0:44Thank you for asking. well, one,
- 0:46I love talking, right? So any opportunity that I have to talk about women,
- 0:51about women's identity, about being more and doing more and all the things,
- 0:56I will take that opportunity. So in the academic world,
- 1:00there is this thing called call for papers,
- 1:02right? And so I submitted an abstract to a call for papers with
- 1:06the gender and women's studies in London.
- 1:08it was at the Queensgate College.
- 1:11And ~ they accepted my abstract,
- 1:13which is where I was talking about the sort of
- 1:16the fall of identity, right? I I was talking about,
- 1:19okay, so this is how we lose the identity,
- 1:21very short little bit, and then this is how we regain that identity,
- 1:24which is where the re you concept comes from.
- 1:27And and it's I didn't invent the wheel,
- 1:30right? It was an observation of when we find ourselves asking,
- 1:35I don't even know who I am anymore.
- 1:37I wanted to say, okay, here's a step-by-step to start to
- 1:40ask yourself those questions of what am I feeling right now in this moment?
- 1:44Like saying yes when you really wanted to say no.
- 1:47and so after I got accepted into this conference,
- 1:51I booked a flight and, you know,
- 1:54created a a PowerPoint or presentation.
- 1:56And I wanted it to be something that had very strong visuals,
- 1:59right? Because words get blurred over.
- 2:03Words become
- 2:04of a background sometimes. And so I tried to create a really image heavy
- 2:09presentation that people could see and feel and identify with.
- 2:13you know, I could see that, right?
- 2:15When we have all these different masks around us,
- 2:17I created a a showcase of masks and I know that I wear multiple masks,
- 2:22right? I'm the mom, I'm the daughter,
- 2:24I'm the strong one, I'm the sensible one,
- 2:26I'm all these different parts,
- 2:28and which is where the masks come in.
- 2:30And which part is the woman?
- 2:32Which part is the person that is truly me,
- 2:34the authentic me versus the role that I play?
- 2:37And something that I learned. So I was the third speaker that went up.
- 2:41~ this was an international ~ event.
- 2:44There was people from Nigeria,
- 2:45New Zealand, the United States,
- 2:47of course, there were several from England,
- 2:49a couple from France, and it was all about gender women studies.
- 2:53And
- 2:54It was extraordinary. It was extraordinary to hear everybody's perspective
- 2:59and so many different diverse individuals.
- 3:02~ I heard probably about twenty two speakers in total and most of them,
- 3:07probably twenty of them, I thought I need to get this person's contact and
- 3:11I want to continue a relationship with them because the information they gave
- 3:15was just it was breathtaking. And,
- 3:17you know, so I made a trip, I went out
- 3:20I did the the the presentation and I think what was interesting there was
- 3:24a lady in Jamaica who works for a women's shelter.
- 3:27and she worked for women who were trying to come out
- 3:30of domestic violence relationships and she helps them with resources
- 3:34and things like that to to kind of get back on their feet.
- 3:37And her presentation, I kid you not,
- 3:39was almost identical to the one that I had.
- 3:42Now hers were specific to
- 3:45re redefining your identity after trauma.
- 3:48particularly those who have been in ~ mostly marriages
- 3:52or relationships where there's a dominant relationship and there
- 3:56was domestic violence. And so there was a a part of it that that s
- 4:01was skewed from mine or that had deviated from from my per particular presentation.
- 4:05because there was this gr kind of strengthening
- 4:08process, right? To kind of believe that you could do it.
- 4:11mine isn't quite that in depth or doesn't go there,
- 4:15right? Because I want to stay in sort of this growth mindset and
- 4:18a more positive mindset. Because it was it was in coaching that
- 4:23I discovered what identity really meant.
- 4:26It because it went past my my psychotherapist role.
- 4:29And after we we both did our talk,
- 4:32we we discovered that our language was exactly the same.
- 4:35And ~ there was also a woman in France who talked a little
- 4:39bit about gender identity, specifically women's identity within
- 4:44the gender question of what is a woman.
- 4:46And again, it sounded very similar.
- 4:49And so while her topic was more about exploring binary and transgender identity,
- 4:55it wasn't so different.
- 4:56Right, because it was about this rediscovering who you already are,
- 5:00right? It's not about reinventing the will.
- 5:02We we don't have to
- 5:03reinvent the will.
- 5:04Yeah.
- 5:04It is about taking some part of you and letting it grow and flourish
- 5:08and and letting it be authentic.
- 5:10And I think it was in that that I had some realizations,
- 5:14right? About this is something that women are grappling with around the world.
- 5:20it may look different, right? The platform may look different.
- 5:23But it is the same problem, right?
- 5:25I I sat next to a woman from Israel who was so brilliant and she talked about
- 5:29her struggles as a a professor,
- 5:32a female professor, and put in the particular area that she was in and
- 5:37she even told me I really saw myself in your presentation and I
- 5:41was thinking like really like with everything
- 5:44that she's experiencing to have that kind of connection with something like
- 5:48my presentation or what the Ryu method is trying to instill.
- 5:52I just had this kind of like epiphany or this this worldview shift just
- 5:57a little bit. So yeah
- 6:00So with your presentation, you your speech,
- 6:03your talk, what do you wanna call it?
- 6:05Presentation, speech, talk. You're on stage,
- 6:07Talk. Yeah.
- 6:08what do you wanna call that?
- 6:09Yeah, I would say it was it was I talked at a conference in Europe or in England.
- 6:13Okay. Okay.
- 6:14specifically England.
- 6:16So in your talk, you you took with you your RE:YOU Method
- 6:22Yes.
- 6:22And so when you're talking about the RE:YOU Method and when you were on that stage,
- 6:27like what was it in your heart,
- 6:29like in your gut that you wanted to put out there for the audience to really hear?
- 6:36And connect with.
- 6:37I wanted people to feel empowered.
- 6:40Yeah, I wanted them to not just empowerment in terms of,
- 6:43yes, you can do it, right? I not necessarily the cheerleader empowerment,
- 6:46right? But the empowerment of asking themselves the question,
- 6:49am I living intentionally? Am I living authentically?
- 6:52Right? And then I wanted to propose some questions that you can internalize.
- 6:58How did I feel about that?
- 7:00When I said yes and I really wanted to say no,
- 7:02what was coming up for me? Right?
- 7:03Did was I afraid to say no? Did I did I challenge myself or overwhelm myself?
- 7:10Or did I ignore my own voice? And that is the thing is at the end of
- 7:15the day when I'm when I'm wanting when I'm doing these talks about
- 7:17the RE:YOU Method or about women's identity,
- 7:19I want people to embarrass.
- 7:22be empowered to ask themselves the question,
- 7:25right? Because the doing part,
- 7:26the the the actual putting it out there in the world and making the change
- 7:30is a hard, that's a hard part,
- 7:32right? But if you start with the awareness of I'm not quite living the
- 7:37~
- 7:38way I want to live, that is really it it it's about developing the awareness,
- 7:43right? So empowering you to become aware.
- 7:45So what's popping up for me and I just wanna know from you if I'm on
- 7:49the right page here is I'm hearing,
- 7:52at least for me, like permission,
- 7:54granting myself permission to get clarity about who I am,
- 7:59who I wanna be, what I want and where I wanna go.
- 8:02Absolutely. Absolutely.
- 8:03Yeah, that's still.
- 8:04And I'll it is about permission and it's even about more than than permission.
- 8:10It is
- 8:11Our identity develops because of a need,
- 8:13Yeah.
- 8:14right? We become a mom. We become important to somebody,
- 8:19right? And so we validate ourselves by that task or that role.
- 8:22And we say, well, we had to be the come,
- 8:24we had to become this way. And this gives you permission to say,
- 8:28do I still have to be that person or do I still have to do those things?
- 8:32Do I still need validation from somebody else by being a people pleaser?
- 8:36Okay. So you might still be a mom and yet things are gonna shift.
- 8:41Like permissions to your
- 8:42Right. I can
- 8:43be a mom, right? Can I give myself permission to also think about myself
- 8:47and my needs?
- 8:47Hmm. Yeah.
- 8:49Right? Does every single penny that I scrape together have to go towards
- 8:54the kids' softball?
- 8:55Right.
- 8:56Right, can I also say, you know what?
- 8:59Mom needs these things. I need these things.
- 9:02I would like to have a massage.
- 9:04I would like to buy some nice makeup or I would like to go to a conference
- 9:08or a retreat. Right. We talk about that all the time of,
- 9:11you know, the retreat isn't simply about inviting women together.
- 9:16It's also about making space for you to ask yourself the hard questions,
- 9:21right? Which is one of the things that we talk about the retreats is,
- 9:24you know, we we have a workbook.
- 9:26And we ask the questions and what are your thoughts about these questions?
- 9:30No one else there to answer them for you.
- 9:32You get to be raw and d I think that's I wanna give you permission ~ no I want,
- 9:37right? It's not my job to give you anything,
- 9:39but it's allowing yourself permission to be raw with yourself.
- 9:43Absolutely.
- 9:44I think you make a good point though.
- 9:46So right, it's not up to you to grant the permission and it sounds like
- 9:50too though you're having an opportunity for people to have a safe place
- 9:54to give themselves permission.
- 9:56And it sounds like
- 9:56Yes.
- 9:57that's what you did with your talk at this conference.
- 9:59Yeah, so incredible.
- 10:00Yes.
- 10:00I I can't remember, I know you had told me,
- 10:03was this a two day event or th I can't remember how many days it was.
- 10:06It was technically three days.
- 10:08~ but the second day was more like a social hour,
- 10:11where people at the conference could come together and they they showed
- 10:14us around London and ~ let us explore and have conversations on that day.
- 10:19Okay.
- 10:19but the first day was more in person.
- 10:21So we were in the conference room,
- 10:22we did the talk, and then the third day was virtual.
- 10:25Alright, and I love also that you brought up that your presentation,
- 10:29that your slides were more visual than words.
- 10:32And I just think that's so beautiful,
- 10:34Tiffanie I think that even in coaching people we we talk and sometimes
- 10:39it is this visual image that can create such a shift.
- 10:43And I don't know that that's always ~ thought about really.
- 10:47So I'm so grateful that you
- 10:50Considered that and took it with you and made such an impact with
- 10:54the people that were in the audience.
- 10:56Yeah, I I I think of it as like going to an art museum,
- 11:00right? How many people are actually talking
- 11:00Hmm. ~
- 11:03at an art museum, right? It's about your experience with the image
- 11:07and about the canvas or the the whatever the the art piece might be.
- 11:11It's about your experience with them,
- 11:13right? Am I feeling something?
- 11:15Is it is it giving me an energy?
- 11:17Am I
- 11:18what is my transaction with this thing?
- 11:20And and I think that's what I'm trying to do with my images.
- 11:23And now I I make these TikTok videos and the TikTok videos aren't some encompassing
- 11:29idea that you can't get anywhere else,
- 11:31but I want you to be impacted by the imagery,
- 11:33right? Do you see yourself in this person and then engage with it?
- 11:37because I do create like videos,
- 11:39animation videos,
- 11:40And those the same kind of imagery that I brought into my workbook,
- 11:43and it's the same imagery that I brought into my presentation.
- 11:45not only for consistency, but there are no other people in these images,
- 11:51right? Almost all of them are a singular person because you're only
- 11:56in control of yourself. You only have yourself really to figure that out,
- 12:00right? It's not your job as a woman to figure everybody else out,
- 12:03even though we do carry a lot of that.
- 12:05emotional labor and physical labor in some cases,
- 12:08you actually can put a lot of that down and and really because once
- 12:12you are aligned and we I know we talked about this earlier,
- 12:15once you're aligned, my body, spirit,
- 12:17everything else seems to go into place and it's kind of mystical
- 12:20and hard to explain. ~
- 12:21It is. Yes.
- 12:23it it just is, it really is. but I will tell you one the things I really loved about
- 12:27going to this ~ conference is that it was academic.
- 12:30And so I was able to approach identity through a psychological lens.
- 12:35And it even helped support me even further in my convictions of what coaching is.
- 12:40Love it.
- 12:41Yeah.
- 12:41So good. And I'm so glad you brought up workbook.
- 12:43~ I know the RE:YOU Method, you do have a workbook,
- 12:47and it is available on the Live Life Fully website.
- 12:50So I'm so glad you brought that up so that we could even mention that.
- 12:53But at llfully.com and go to the shop,
- 12:57it's there. It's available for people to take a deeper dive.
- 13:01And then I know, of course, with
- 13:02you being a certified Live Life Fully coach and using the Live With Intention
- 13:06Curriculum you can also people have an opportunity to take a deeper dive with
- 13:11you one on one as their as their coach,
- 13:15which I think is incredible.
- 13:16Yes.
- 13:17Yes. And all the things.
- 13:19Yes.
- 13:19So Tiffany, I would love for you to give people like three nuggets that
- 13:24you want them to end this podcast today to stop listening and to go with their
- 13:30day on with their day with three nuggets.
- 13:33What would those three nuggets be?
- 13:35~ I think the number one nugget would have to be around awareness.
- 13:39And awareness meaning when when you are faced with a decision,
- 13:43pause. Pause for just a second and say,
- 13:47Is this my voice that's making this decision,
- 13:49or is this somebody else's voice?
- 13:51Is this a I have to, I need to,
- 13:53or I want to. Right?
- 13:55That's I think that's a really big one for me ~ with decision making.
- 14:00the second one is again with someone very wise always tells me every time
- 14:04I get on phone with her, ~ what are you the most excited about?
- 14:08Yeah.
- 14:08And I think asking yourself that question also helps push you forward,
- 14:13right? It moves you in a direction that is going to be positive and growth mindset.
- 14:18Because if I'm excited about something that's happening next week,
- 14:20what am I doing to prepare for that?
- 14:21How am I making
- 14:22Yes. Yes,
- 14:22space for it?
- 14:23yes, yes.
- 14:24And then the last one kind of comes back to permission,
- 14:28but giving yourself permission to pause again before saying the thing
- 14:32out loud and saying, you know,
- 14:34giving yourself permission to say,
- 14:36you know, let me think on that.
- 14:37You don't have to give the answer immediately for whatever it is,
- 14:43right? You can also ask for time,
- 14:45especially if you're not yet confident or secure.
- 14:49In saying that because it does take time,
- 14:50you know, like making change in your identity takes time.
- 14:54And you want to say it with your whole body,
- 14:57you want to say it with your whole heart.
- 14:58And until you're there, it's okay to give to ask,
- 15:02hey, I would like a couple of minutes to think about this,
- 15:05or I need some time to really reflect on,
- 15:08or let me check my schedule. Let me just see if it's possible before promising your
- 15:12life away to somebody.
- 15:13Yes.
- 15:14~
- 15:14because because then you you you you build up shame and and regret if
- 15:18you have to backtrack. And we we don't wanna we wanna push forward.
- 15:21We don't we don't wanna look back,
- 15:23we wanna push forward. So
- 15:24Love that. And I love that the pause,
- 15:26because the pause and considering yourself,
- 15:29considering all things that you can think of at the time with what you have,
- 15:33it's a way to build confidence because you'll feel more confident
- 15:37in the decision that you're making.
- 15:39So I love that you talk about that permission to pause.
- 15:42P2P.
- 15:43Yes.
- 15:43And you know, most people are okay with that.
- 15:46Right?
- 15:47Yes.
- 15:47They would rather you take a few minutes,
- 15:50walk away if you have to and come back than to lie or backtrack or backpedal,
- 15:55Yeah.
- 15:55however you want to name it, right?
- 15:56They would rather you take a moment,
- 15:59right?
- 15:59Absolutely.
- 16:00It protects yourself and it protects those around you,
- 16:03right?
- 16:03Yes. So good. So good. I'm super excited about your rey method.
- 16:09I I personally have read it, I've gone through it.
- 16:12I think it's incredible. And I encourage everyone to take a look.
- 16:16And then also if you're curious about what it would be like to work with Tiffany
- 16:21as a certified Live Life Fully coach,
- 16:22go to the website again, llfully.com,
- 16:25find Tiffany and click Schedule a Clarity Call.
- 16:29And you can have a 20-minute phone call with her that and then decide if
- 16:34you want to move forward. If so,
- 16:36then you would have another call and that call would be an hour.
- 16:39That's a strategy call. And both are free.
- 16:42Both are free. No obligation. See what comes up for you.
- 16:45See where you want your life to go.
- 16:47Gain a little nugget of clarity and see what happens next.
- 16:50Yeah, thank you so much, Tiffany,
- 16:52for coming on and sharing with us about your trip to London,
- 16:56presenting the connections you made,
- 16:58really this deeper understanding that it is an international thing
- 17:02and that women matter and our identity matters.
- 17:05And so I do appreciate you sharing and I appreciate you creating the Ryu method.
- 17:11Absolutely.
- 17:11And thank
- 17:11you for having me and thank you for allowing me to to come on here
- 17:14and speak about it because I am extremely passionate about identity
- 17:18and women and living authentically.
