- 0:04Speaker 1: I shall give him shall never thirst. But the water
- 0:08Speaker 1: that I shall give him shall be in a well
- 0:11Speaker 1: of water springing up into eternal life. John 4.14 Jesus,
- 0:19Speaker 1: I thank you that you continually show me the life
- 0:22Speaker 1: that I am supposed to live. I thank you that
- 0:26Speaker 1: as I read your word, you are continuously showing me
- 0:30Speaker 1: that you love all people, no matter where they came from,
- 0:35Speaker 1: what they look like, or what reputation they have. I
- 0:40Speaker 1: pray that you give me the same heart that is
- 0:43Speaker 1: inside of you. Use me as a vessel to deliver

- 1:37Speaker 2: The Woman at the Well In our last story, we
- 1:40Speaker 2: witnessed the righteous anger of Jesus. During the Passover, corrupt
- 1:46Speaker 2: money changers and religious leaders were exploiting people's desire to worship.
- 1:51Speaker 2: Jesus would have no barriers between God and people, so
- 1:55Speaker 2: he fashioned a whip and drove them out. Now we
- 1:58Speaker 2: see Jesus speak to a woman with a checkered past.
- 2:02Speaker 2: She was shunned by her people, but accepted by Jesus.
- 2:05Speaker 2: Her conversation with him would change the course of her
- 2:08Speaker 2: entire life, inspired by the Gospels.
- 2:14Speaker 3: Hello, this is Pastor Jack Graham with another episode of
- 2:18Speaker 3: the Bible in a Year podcast. In our last episode,
- 2:21Speaker 3: we heard how Jesus cleared the temple, an act of
- 2:24Speaker 3: zeal for God's house, and a sign once again that
- 2:27Speaker 3: he is the Messiah. He is the Lord of the temple.
- 2:30Speaker 3: Many did not understand him or accept him and even
- 2:33Speaker 3: rejected him. The religious leaders began to feel the threat
- 2:37Speaker 3: that Jesus posed to their status quo religious system. We
- 2:42Speaker 3: also heard of one Pharisee, a very religious man, a
- 2:45Speaker 3: very bright and noble man by the name of Nicodemus,
- 2:49Speaker 3: who wanted to know more about Jesus, and he sought
- 2:51Speaker 3: him out, and Jesus said, you must be born again. Today,
- 2:56Speaker 3: we'll hear the story of a very different kind of person.
- 2:59Speaker 3: Not a person who was religious and thereby close to God,
- 3:03Speaker 3: but a woman who, though religious in some way, was
- 3:07Speaker 3: very far from God. A person who didn't seek God out,
- 3:11Speaker 3: but Jesus sought her out. She was in many ways
- 3:14Speaker 3: the polar opposite of Nicodemus. And yet, as Jesus spoke
- 3:18Speaker 3: to her directly with love and compassion, her entire life
- 3:22Speaker 3: is changed and she experiences the new birth, the forgiveness
- 3:26Speaker 3: that is ours in Jesus Christ. So let's listen now
- 3:30Speaker 3: to this powerful story.
- 3:33Speaker 2: The sun was high above the skies of Samaria. Its
- 3:36Speaker 2: rays scorched the earth below, beating down restlessly. It was
- 3:40Speaker 2: around the valley of Samaria where Jesus was traveling on
- 3:43Speaker 2: his way to Galilee. The Jews hated the Samaritans and
- 3:47Speaker 2: held deep prejudices against them. Usually, any Jewish traveler walked
- 3:52Speaker 2: around Samaria. Not Jesus. He decided to travel through it.
- 3:57Speaker 2: The afternoon sun was merciless, and Jesus' disciples departed to
- 4:01Speaker 2: get food. Jesus walked towards a single well resting on
- 4:05Speaker 2: the bottom of a hill. A Samaritan woman was drawing
- 4:08Speaker 2: water there in the heat of day. It was a
- 4:10Speaker 2: peculiar sight, since most women gathered water for the day
- 4:14Speaker 2: early in the morning to escape the sun. Jesus sat
- 4:18Speaker 2: on a rock beside the well. The woman saw him there,
- 4:21Speaker 2: but paid no attention to him. Jesus looked up at
- 4:24Speaker 2: the sun, then back at the woman. You mind drawing
- 4:27Speaker 2: me some water? Jesus asked. The woman looked up at him.
- 4:31Speaker 2: Her face was cold and impassive. Now why would a
- 4:34Speaker 2: Jew want a woman from Samaria to draw him water,
- 4:37Speaker 2: she said as she lowered the bucket down into the well.
- 4:40Speaker 2: Jesus smiled, not allowing her harsh tone to bother him.
- 4:44Speaker 2: If you knew who was asking you for water, you
- 4:47Speaker 2: would ask me for living water, Jesus replied. The woman
- 4:51Speaker 2: looked Jesus up and down. You have nothing to draw
- 4:54Speaker 2: water with. Where would you get flowing and living water
- 4:57Speaker 2: from anyways? This is a well. Jesus stood up and
- 5:02Speaker 2: walked closer to the well. He looked down into the
- 5:05Speaker 2: water below and said, Whoever drinks this water will be
- 5:08Speaker 2: thirsty again. They will surely have to keep coming back,
- 5:12Speaker 2: but whoever drinks of the water I give will never
- 5:14Speaker 2: thirst again. The woman did her best to hide her shock.
- 5:19Speaker 2: She had been coming to the well for years and
- 5:21Speaker 2: hated every single trip. She was shunned by the other women,
- 5:25Speaker 2: so she had to draw in the middle of the
- 5:27Speaker 2: day when the sun was high and hot. I need
- 5:30Speaker 2: this living water, she said impatiently. I never want to
- 5:33Speaker 2: come back here again. Jesus paused for a moment. Very well.
- 5:37Speaker 2: Go and call your husband, he said casually. The woman
- 5:41Speaker 2: looked away. I don't have a husband, she replied. Ah, yes,
- 5:45Speaker 2: Jesus said. You are right. You have no husband. Jesus
- 5:49Speaker 2: looked her in the eyes. You have had five husbands,
- 5:52Speaker 2: and the man you are living with now is not
- 5:55Speaker 2: your husband. The woman held back tears with a fake
- 5:58Speaker 2: smile as she tried to change the subject. Sir, I
- 6:02Speaker 2: perceive you are a prophet. You know this well as
- 6:05Speaker 2: sacred ground. Our forefathers worshipped here on the mountain. Although
- 6:09Speaker 2: the Jews say that the temple is the place we
- 6:11Speaker 2: should worship now. The woman was speaking quickly. Her eyes
- 6:15Speaker 2: were watering. There was pain behind her religious small talk.
- 6:19Speaker 2: Jesus could feel her anguished heart. He had struck a
- 6:22Speaker 2: chord by mentioning her five divorces. He approached the other
- 6:26Speaker 2: side of the well and sat next to her. He
- 6:29Speaker 2: gave a reassuring smile and looked into the distance. Believe me,
- 6:33Speaker 2: the time is coming when people won't worship on a
- 6:36Speaker 2: mountain or in a temple. The true worshippers will worship
- 6:39Speaker 2: in spirit and in truth. The woman nodded. Yes, I
- 6:45Speaker 2: suppose they will when the Messiah comes. He will tell
- 6:48Speaker 2: us how and where we should truly worship. Jesus nodded.
- 6:52Speaker 2: He smiled from cheek to cheek as he looked the
- 6:54Speaker 2: woman in the eye. Yes, he will.
- 6:58Speaker 1: I am he.
- 7:00Speaker 2: As Jesus was saying this, his disciples were returning with
- 7:03Speaker 2: their lunch. They saw Jesus from a distance and judged
- 7:06Speaker 2: him for speaking to a Samaritan woman, although none of
- 7:09Speaker 2: them said anything or asked why he was speaking to her.
- 7:13Speaker 2: They saw the woman leap up from where she was
- 7:15Speaker 2: sitting and run away back to the city. The woman
- 7:18Speaker 2: ran fast and with great joy. She knocked on every
- 7:20Speaker 2: door in the city. Quick, to the well, come quick.
- 7:24Speaker 2: People poked their heads out of their doors and windows.
- 7:27Speaker 2: You must come see this man. He told me everything
- 7:29Speaker 2: about me. I think he may be the Christ. So
- 7:33Speaker 2: the Samaritans left their homes to come see Jesus. They
- 7:36Speaker 2: sat at his feet and listened to him teach for
- 7:38Speaker 2: two days. Many believed as they heard him speak.
- 7:45Speaker 3: We open today's reading with Jesus traveling on a hot
- 7:48Speaker 3: and long road into a place most Jews avoided at
- 7:52Speaker 3: all costs. Samaria was despised by Jewish people. They viewed
- 7:56Speaker 3: the Samaritans as half-breeds and impure. But Jesus did not
- 8:01Speaker 3: see these distinctions. These were people created in God's image,
- 8:05Speaker 3: people that God loved, people in need of redemption like
- 8:09Speaker 3: every person on earth. And so, rather than avoid or
- 8:13Speaker 3: walk around this city of Samaria, taking a longer road
- 8:17Speaker 3: to get away from the undesirables, Jesus went through Samaria.
- 8:21Speaker 3: Under the heat of the sun, he became thirsty, showing
- 8:24Speaker 3: his humanity. He was needing a drink of water. So
- 8:27Speaker 3: he went to a Samaritan well at midday. There was
- 8:31Speaker 3: one woman there drawing water. She was clearly not a
- 8:34Speaker 3: part of the mainstream of society. She was there alone.
- 8:39Speaker 3: His very presence would have been surprising and unusual for
- 8:42Speaker 3: this woman. He was clearly a Jew, and he was
- 8:45Speaker 3: a man, and good Jewish men did not talk to
- 8:48Speaker 3: Samaritan women, certainly not publicly. But then notice what Jesus
- 8:52Speaker 3: did next. He asked her to draw water for him
- 8:55Speaker 3: to drink. Now, why would he ask her this? Well,
- 9:00Speaker 3: he's asking her to draw water so that he could
- 9:03Speaker 3: draw her out. She asked Jesus this question, wondering why
- 9:07Speaker 3: he would break so many unwritten rules. He could tell
- 9:10Speaker 3: that this woman had often been told and shown that
- 9:13Speaker 3: her place on the societal ladder was very low. But
- 9:17Speaker 3: Jesus persevered in conversing with this woman. He was unfazed
- 9:21Speaker 3: by her distracting question and answered that if she knew
- 9:25Speaker 3: who he was, she would ask him for living water.
- 9:29Speaker 3: Living water? Well, once again, she didn't understand. What did
- 9:33Speaker 3: he mean? He couldn't even draw physical water for himself.
- 9:37Speaker 3: He had no bucket or rope of any way to
- 9:39Speaker 3: get water from the well. So what is this living water?
- 9:43Speaker 3: Jesus went on to explain that the water that she
- 9:45Speaker 3: would draw would quench physical thirst for just a while,
- 9:49Speaker 3: but that he would offer a living water that would
- 9:52Speaker 3: last forever, that would satisfy once and for all. What
- 9:57Speaker 3: is this water? Water that quenches thirst for She needed that.
- 10:02Speaker 3: She wanted that. She asked Jesus to give her some,
- 10:06Speaker 3: especially if it meant she never needed to come alone
- 10:08Speaker 3: to this well again. Jesus then told her to call
- 10:12Speaker 3: her husband, knowing full well there was no husband. The
- 10:15Speaker 3: Samaritan woman replied with obvious shame in her voice that
- 10:18Speaker 3: she had no husband. He then told her he knew
- 10:21Speaker 3: her heart and he knew her life, that not only
- 10:24Speaker 3: was she not married, but that she had been married
- 10:26Speaker 3: five times before and was now living with a man
- 10:29Speaker 3: that was not her husband. The goal of Jesus was
- 10:32Speaker 3: not to shame this woman. This is not cruel, but
- 10:35Speaker 3: this is convictional. He is bringing her face to face
- 10:38Speaker 3: with her sin and her need for a Savior. She
- 10:41Speaker 3: needs to know that her life can be changed. that
- 10:45Speaker 3: what she's looking for in life is not found in
- 10:47Speaker 3: a man or a relationship or anything else that this
- 10:50Speaker 3: world offers, but only the eternal living Word of God, Jesus.
- 10:57Speaker 3: She then called Jesus a prophet and began a conversation
- 11:00Speaker 3: about the differences between the Jews and Samaritans' belief and
- 11:04Speaker 3: practices of worship. In one way, she's trying to throw
- 11:07Speaker 3: Jesus off as he's zeroing in on their great need
- 11:10Speaker 3: for salvation. Jesus listened to her and then spoke to her,
- 11:14Speaker 3: saying there was a time coming for true worship, and
- 11:17Speaker 3: it wasn't about a place. People would worship God in
- 11:20Speaker 3: spirit and in truth. His words triggered a recognition in
- 11:24Speaker 3: her mind, and in John 4, 25 and 26, we
- 11:28Speaker 3: read these words from the woman who said to him,
- 11:30Speaker 3: I know that the Messiah is coming, he who is
- 11:33Speaker 3: called the Christ. When he comes, he will tell us
- 11:36Speaker 3: all things. Jesus said to her, I who speak to
- 11:39Speaker 3: you am he. Now, don't miss this. Jesus is clearly
- 11:46Speaker 3: claiming to be the Messiah. And he shares this truth
- 11:49Speaker 3: with a woman, a woman at the well, a sinner,
- 11:53Speaker 3: shamed by her sin, a Samaritan who was a cast off,
- 11:56Speaker 3: and yet he reveals himself and she believes. She responds
- 12:01Speaker 3: in faith. And not only that, but she ran back
- 12:05Speaker 3: to the city and told everyone in town who she
- 12:07Speaker 3: had met. This outcast woman led others to a saving face.
- 12:11Speaker 3: She said, come and meet a man that will change
- 12:14Speaker 3: your life. And once again, we see how God extends
- 12:17Speaker 3: his mercy and grace to all who will come to him.
- 12:22Speaker 3: We need to spend our days like this woman because
- 12:25Speaker 3: we have trusted in Christ, telling the world who Jesus is,
- 12:28Speaker 3: the good news of his salvation. Thank you, Lord, for
- 12:32Speaker 3: the wonderful story of Jesus. Thank you that you love
- 12:35Speaker 3: us in spite of our sins, that you went to
- 12:38Speaker 3: a cross and died and then rose again so that
- 12:41Speaker 3: we could be forgiven and drink of the living water
- 12:44Speaker 3: forever and ever. Amen. Thank you for listening to today's
