- 0:24Now let's open our Bibles and study God's Word.
- 0:30Amen. Psalm 51 again, the title of
- 0:33broken prayer, the posture of a guilty heart.
- 0:36You'll notice the heading here that we didn't read together.
- 0:39It says here to the chief musician a Psalm of David when
- 0:43Nathan the prophet went to him after he had gone into
- 0:47Bathsheba. Now this Psalm is one of seven
- 0:51psalms that are called penitential psalms.
- 0:54What that means is they are songs of confession of sin,
- 0:58Psalms of humility, and psalms of repentance.
- 1:02And so if you're ever wanting to read through a Psalm to give you
- 1:05verbs or or words as you're confessing your sin to the Lord,
- 1:10go to one of these 7 psalms because they are kind of a, a
- 1:13grid for us to pray. I'll give you all seven of these
- 1:16if you want to jot these down. The seven penitential psalms are
- 1:19found in Psalm 6, Psalm 32, Psalm 38, Psalm 51.
- 1:28Here is we're going to read Psalm 102, Psalm 130, and Psalm
- 1:34143. And you can feel this even as we
- 1:39read it today. David speaking in complete
- 1:42brokenness and heartache because of his own sin.
- 1:47And he tells us here in verse 17 that brokenness is a thing that
- 1:51God desires from us in our failings.
- 1:55You know, the world will discard broken things if it's broken.
- 1:58We're done with it. But in the Kingdom of God, he
- 2:01draws near to those that are broken.
- 2:03Look at what it says here in verse 17.
- 2:05The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit, a broken and a
- 2:10contrite heart. These, oh God, you will not
- 2:14despise. And so in a room like this 1045
- 2:19service, I don't know what you've brought in here today
- 2:23regarding your own personal story or the sin that you have
- 2:27carried into this place. Perhaps there is a sense of
- 2:31failure because sin has robbed you of the joy of your
- 2:35salvation. Or maybe there's something that
- 2:38you've even carried for years that you've never told anybody
- 2:42about. Perhaps today you're in
- 2:45compromise and you might even feel like you're beyond the
- 2:48point of God's forgiveness. God tells us as we just read
- 2:53here, He does not despise a broken heart.
- 2:58It tells us another place. He draws near to those that are
- 3:02broken. There's something of our
- 3:04brokenness and our honesty that that attracts the Lord to us.
- 3:09And So what I want you to know and hear today before we jump
- 3:12in, He cares for those of you that are sitting here today that
- 3:16are weary with the weight of sin.
- 3:19He cares for those of you that are broken, that are empty.
- 3:22And he says to us here today through this Psalm, this is the
- 3:26way for this to be fixed in your life and for you to be restored.
- 3:32David is going to help us and prescribe a way out of the
- 3:37weight of sin in the context of God's grace here.
- 3:41And so the good news that I get to share with you this morning
- 3:44is that forgiveness is instant. It can happen right here today.
- 3:50It can all be taken care of. And you can leave out the doors
- 3:53on the way out this afternoon free from whatever it is that
- 3:57you brought into this place. And, and this is where David is
- 4:01in Psalm 51. But there's a story.
- 4:04Many of us are familiar with it, but some of us might not be
- 4:06behind Psalm 51. So let's just take a quick look
- 4:10at the backdrop here. David was the greatest king that
- 4:14Israel had ever known. He was over 50 years old at this
- 4:18point, and he had settled into a rut, which is, by the way, a
- 4:24dangerous place for any of us to be if we find ourselves in a
- 4:28spiritual rut, because that's where the greatest compromise
- 4:30will always come. And the background to the Psalm,
- 4:33if you want to jot this down in your Bible, maybe right next to
- 4:36Psalm 51 is Second Samuel 11 and 12.
- 4:39And you can read about the story there, Second Samuel 11 and 12.
- 4:43And it tells us there that this was the time when kings would go
- 4:47out with their armies to battle. This would have been springtime.
- 4:51But David, again, he remained in Jerusalem while his army went
- 4:56out under his chief commander, Joe AB, and they went and fought
- 5:00a battle in the area of Ammon there.
- 5:02And this was unlike David to do. If you read through his life,
- 5:05you realize he is a mighty warrior.
- 5:07He was always out there fighting with his his mighty men.
- 5:10But at this season of his life, David's a little bit older.
- 5:14He's had a lot of success. Again, he was known as the
- 5:18greatest king of Israel. He was the second king, but was
- 5:22a great man, a great leader, a great warrior.
- 5:24But he became comfortable at this season of his life.
- 5:28And what happens a lot of times with us is, is we get
- 5:30comfortable as we begin to let our guard down.
- 5:34And the way he did that is he decided, I'm I'm going to let
- 5:37those guys go out and fight. I'm going to stay back in the
- 5:40palace. And he didn't go into battle.
- 5:43And we know after reading the story and looking back, he would
- 5:46have been much safer in the battle than he was staying in
- 5:50the courts of his palace. But you know the story from
- 5:54here, right? One night, he was on the roof of
- 5:56his palace and Jerusalem. It was on a high heel so he
- 6:00could lookout, and he could see all the other houses around.
- 6:03And he sees a beautiful woman next door to him taking a bath
- 6:07on her roof, which would have been typical in this day.
- 6:10And of course, she was aware of who lived next door to her as
- 6:13well, right? And so he calls for her, tells
- 6:17us that he takes her. And then as we read in the intro
- 6:21here to Psalm 51, he had a sexual relationship with her.
- 6:26And here in that moment, the great king of Israel, God's
- 6:30chosen man, broke God's heart because he committed adultery
- 6:37with Bathsheba. And then after some time passed,
- 6:41he hears the news that made his heart drop.
- 6:46She realizes she's pregnant now with his son.
- 6:50So David does what many of us have done.
- 6:53I've done it. He begins the process of hiding
- 6:57and covering up his sin to do whatever he can to make it is if
- 7:02it didn't happen. So another problem with this
- 7:06story is that she was also married and she was married to a
- 7:10man named Uriah who was one of Davids mighty men out there in
- 7:15the battle where David should have been.
- 7:18So David then calls for Uriah to come back to the palace.
- 7:23Uriah checks in with David. David wants to feed him.
- 7:28David then gets him drunk. And in this David is saying, go
- 7:32home to your wife Bathsheba, and go sleep with her.
- 7:36He's hoping that if Uriah will sleep with Bathsheba, then that
- 7:41will be covered. And people would think, oh, it's
- 7:44it's Uriah's kid and, and the story's over at that point.
- 7:49But Uriah never goes home. And the reason is because he was
- 7:53an honorable man and he wanted to be back where he knew he
- 7:56should have been in battle with his men.
- 8:00So he says, how can I sit back and just chill and my lazy boy
- 8:04when all of my fellow soldiers are out in the battlefield, when
- 8:08they are out there laying down their lives?
- 8:12And so drunk Uriah goes home, but he doesn't go inside his
- 8:16home. Instead, he sleeps on the porch
- 8:19of his home because he's ready to get back out where he knows
- 8:22he should be. Which is interesting because it
- 8:24shows us there that a drunk Uriah is more honorable than a
- 8:28sober David. So after several attempts with
- 8:32Uriah, trying to get him to go back home, go sleep with his
- 8:36wife Bathsheba, David gets desperate and he comes up with
- 8:41this plan. Here he gives Uriah a letter and
- 8:46he says, take this back to Joab again, who was the chief
- 8:49commander of David's army in battle and and Joab then
- 8:54receives this letter from Uriah. And the letter reads like this.
- 9:00David writes, I want you to take Uriah, set him at the heat of
- 9:04the battle, the fiercest part of the battle, the front lines.
- 9:08And then he says, and I want you to withdraw all the rest of the
- 9:12men and leave him up there to fight alone.
- 9:17And so Joab obeys the command of his King David, and of course,
- 9:22Uriah is killed there in battle. And then Joab sends a message
- 9:28back to David and it reads, Uriah, your servant is dead.
- 9:36And so in order for David to continue now to try to cover up
- 9:39his sin, he takes Bathsheba now to be his wife.
- 9:44Now David, the great king of Israel has sinned in, in the
- 9:49worst of ways here, adultery, murder, lying, deception,
- 9:54covering it up. And he was ruining now his
- 9:57testimony as the great king of Israel, because David takes
- 10:01another man's wife, she gets pregnant, has her husband
- 10:05killed, drags Joab now into his sin.
- 10:09I have no doubt that he loses respect now for David.
- 10:13Meanwhile, as some time went on, Bathsheba's grandfather, who
- 10:18happened to be David's greatest counselor, his name was
- 10:22Ahithophel. He gets bitter at David and he
- 10:26begins to plan David's death in a rebellion.
- 10:30He was ready to take David out, but after some time ahead, FL
- 10:36commits suicide because he knows that he's wrong in what he's
- 10:40doing. And this sin of David has
- 10:44created an absolute mess of his life.
- 10:49And it explicitly tells us in Second Samuel 1127, the thing
- 10:54that David had done displeased the Lord.
- 10:59And then David sits with all of this for over a year.
- 11:05He continues to go through the motions as the king.
- 11:08He continues to do the daily sacrifice in the temple.
- 11:12But every night as he lays his head down on his pillow, no
- 11:15confession. I'm sure He's hoping perhaps
- 11:19that he can excuse it, that this will at some point go away.
- 11:24But what happens when we sit with our sin long enough?
- 11:27Is our heart begun? Begins to get hard and maybe
- 11:31he's thinking I'm getting away with it.
- 11:34But you and I know for any of us that have sat with sin, if we've
- 11:38hid in our sin in hopes that it's never found out and maybe
- 11:42here, if we're in that place today, then we can imagine how
- 11:46David feels because David's going to write about it.
- 11:49It's eating away at him. It's it's miserable.
- 11:54He tells us that there's no joy, no happiness in his life.
- 11:58Some scholars even believe that as David sometimes in the Psalms
- 12:02writes of a physical illness, that he was battling it.
- 12:06It was likely the result of some of the stress that he was
- 12:09carrying as a result of this. And God allowed it to do what
- 12:13sin does in all of our lives. Unresolved sin wears away at
- 12:19every single one of us. Now, after a year of this, God
- 12:26sends Nathan the prophet to David.
- 12:30And Nathan shows up to the king, and he does what many prophets
- 12:33do. He begins to tell David a story,
- 12:37and this is a story. He says there was a wealthy man
- 12:39who had lots of flocks, lots of sheep, lots of lambs, and there
- 12:45was a poor man. But this poor man only had one
- 12:48lamb, and he loved that lamb. He fed that lamb from his own
- 12:53table. He let it sleep with his family
- 12:56and his house. He loved that lamb like his own
- 12:59child. And as the story continues,
- 13:03there were some travellers who visited one day, the wealthy
- 13:06man. And instead of taking one of his
- 13:08own lambs to feed the traveller, the wealthy man took the poor
- 13:13man's one lamb and used it to feed the traveller.
- 13:18And this crushed the heart of the poor man who loved this
- 13:23little lamb. So at this point in the story,
- 13:26Nathan, the prophet looks at David and he says what should be
- 13:30done to this wealthy man? And David gets so angry by the
- 13:35story. And, and I have to believe it's
- 13:37because David was a shepherd. At one point.
- 13:40He was out in the fields with the flocks of sheep.
- 13:42He connected with the sheep as well.
- 13:44And as he's feeling this, he says, this man should be put to
- 13:48death. And then Nathan catches eyes
- 13:52with David and says some of the most chilling words that I'm
- 13:56sure David has ever heard. He looks at him square in the
- 14:00face and he says, David, you are that man.
- 14:05In other words, David, you're the one that had it all.
- 14:10And you took from Uriah his one lamb, his one wife.
- 14:16So Nathan is saying to David, David, I know what you did.
- 14:20You've been trying to hide it. You've been hoping it would go
- 14:23away. But even more importantly,
- 14:24David, God knows what you did. And it was in that moment, being
- 14:30confronted with his sin, that David finally breaks.
- 14:35And he says 3 words that he should have said immediately
- 14:38after his sin. He should have said a year ago.
- 14:41He says I have sinned. The sin that had been so hidden
- 14:50for so long, he finally owns. He finally begins to come clean.
- 14:56He doesn't shift the blame to someone else, the culture or the
- 15:00way he was raised. His parents know what he does is
- 15:05he comes face to face with the reality of what he does and he
- 15:08acknowledges that he was guilty. He was guilty of everything.
- 15:12And there's David now in this moment, turning his heart back
- 15:16to God. He's feeling the weight of all
- 15:20of that sin. He's feeling the the heartbreak
- 15:24of a year out of fellowship with God.
- 15:27And I got imagine he's processing all of the fallout
- 15:30that the sin is already caused in his life.
- 15:32And David is undone. David is broken.
- 15:36And David then approaches the Lord with a guilty heart here in
- 15:40Psalm 51. Now before we jump in, I was
- 15:44asked a question this week that I'm sure many of you have asked.
- 15:47I remember at one point asking the same question.
- 15:49It was on Calvary Live this week.
- 15:51And I believe there's a woman that called and she says, hey,
- 15:53if I'm already forgiven because I put my faith and trust in
- 15:57Jesus And at the cross, when Jesus paid the price for our
- 16:01sin, he said it is finished. It is paid in full, which means
- 16:07the moment we put our faith and trust in Jesus, all of our past,
- 16:10present and future sin is forgiven.
- 16:14And that means he doesn't make payments now for our sin.
- 16:17He didn't take a mortgage out and and every month he's making
- 16:20a payment. He made one payment finally and
- 16:23for all. And she says, is that true that
- 16:26I'm forgiven? I said, yes, isn't that the best
- 16:29news in the world? And she said, well, let me ask
- 16:31another question. Why then do I need to confess my
- 16:35sin if it's already forgiven? Why do I need to ask forgiveness
- 16:38from God if if, if it's already forgiven?
- 16:41And, and the answer to that is twofold.
- 16:44There is positional forgiveness, and that is again, the moment
- 16:49you receive Jesus as your Savior, all of that forgiveness
- 16:52was appropriated. It was added to your life, and
- 16:55you are positionally forgiven, which means you have a home in
- 16:59heaven waiting for you, which means that there is glory on the
- 17:02other side, which means that he doesn't hold your sin against
- 17:06you. When it comes to your position,
- 17:07because Paul talks about this, your position is now in Christ.
- 17:12But there's another kind of forgiveness that we could call
- 17:14relational forgiveness. And that would be like if my son
- 17:20comes into my room and ask him a question and he lies to me and
- 17:24then he walks out of my room. Maybe I knew he lied.
- 17:27Maybe I didn't know he lied. But there's something now in
- 17:29between our relationship. Trust is the currency of every
- 17:32relationship. And he has broken that trust now
- 17:35because there's a lie that it's going to weigh on him.
- 17:40And after some time, maybe he comes back to my room and he
- 17:42goes, Dad, you know, I just, I feel this.
- 17:43I'm sorry I lied to you. And of course I'm going to say
- 17:46to him, I forgive you. I love you.
- 17:49And it's that way with the Lord. When we have unconfessed sin or
- 17:53undealt with sin in our life, there's something that hinders
- 17:57or we could say blocks our fellowship with God, our
- 18:00relationship with him. It's not that we lose our
- 18:03salvation. I want to make that very clear.
- 18:05The Bible says you are eternally kept in the palm of his hand.
- 18:09If he was powerful enough to save you, he is powerful enough
- 18:13to keep you, and he will do that for all eternity.
- 18:16It says in the book of Jude. He will present you faultless
- 18:19before the throne of God, which I I am so thankful for.
- 18:23But on this side of eternity, it's possible to be positionally
- 18:27forgiven, but to have sin in my life, that's keeping me from a
- 18:31relationship with God, that's keeping me from sensing his
- 18:34presence, that's keeping me from the blessing because I'm
- 18:37allowing that to sit. And the longer it sits, the
- 18:40harder my heart gets. The Bible says that we can
- 18:43actually even have a heart. That is insensitive.
- 18:45It's desensitized. So with all of that being said,
- 18:49jump in here into Psalm 51 if you're taking notes.
- 18:52There are two prayers that David prays here of a broken guilty
- 18:57heart. 2 Prayers of a broken guilty heart number 1 He says to
- 19:03the Lord, Cleanse me, cleanse me.
- 19:06Verses one through 6 here beginning at verse one, Have
- 19:09mercy upon me, O God, according to your loving kindness,
- 19:15according to the multitude of your tender mercies.
- 19:19Blot out my transgressions, wash me thoroughly from my iniquity
- 19:26and cleanse me from my sin. This is what God was waiting for
- 19:31David to do for over a year was to come and to admit and to
- 19:37confess. And you'll see here, take note
- 19:39of this. David writes over and over
- 19:42again. He says have mercy upon me.
- 19:45Blot out my transgression, wash me from my sin, my iniquity,
- 19:50cleanse me from my sin. He's beyond the point at this
- 19:54season of blaming others, of making excuses, of trying to
- 19:58cover it up. He is owning his sin and and
- 20:02listen, Church, when we are willing to own our sin, even the
- 20:06greatest of our sin is met with the greatest of his mercy.
- 20:11That's the wonderful news. There's no hope for the pardon
- 20:15of sin or for the forgiveness of sin if there is no mercy for
- 20:19sin. But.
- 20:22We know mercy is not getting what you do deserve, which means
- 20:26we do deserve justice for our sin.
- 20:31And David knows that here, which is why he's not asking for
- 20:34justice. David is pleading to the Lord
- 20:36for mercy. He's admitting that he's wrong.
- 20:39He's saying, I know I deserve all the consequences.
- 20:43I know I deserve the fallout of my sin and all that it's brought
- 20:46to me and to my family and to the Kingdom.
- 20:50But he's saying, oh Lord, would you instead be merciful to me?
- 20:55And let me tell you this morning, God is ready right now
- 21:02to pour out all of His mercy on your life.
- 21:06He forgives beyond what any of us could ever imagine.
- 21:10That is the good news and you might think, well, how can this
- 21:14be? He answers that as he continues
- 21:16here in verse one according to your loving kindness.
- 21:20And that's a beautiful word in the Hebrew.
- 21:23It's the word has said loving kindness there.
- 21:26It's God's covenant love with us, which as one old preacher
- 21:30said, it is a love that will not let me go.
- 21:34He's saying, God, would you be merciful to me because you have
- 21:37a love towards me that you promised You will not let me go,
- 21:41Your loving kindness. And David is saying this is what
- 21:45I am counting on as I'm confessing and pleading for your
- 21:49mercy right now in my life. He continues also according to
- 21:54the multitude of your tender mercies.
- 21:57And I was thinking about my life and I was thinking, man, there's
- 22:00been a multitude of sin in my life.
- 22:04For some of us, there may have even been a multitude of sin
- 22:06this week, but that multitude of sin can be met with a multitude
- 22:12of His tender mercies. And again, He offers you all His
- 22:17mercy that is available. And His mercy that He wants to
- 22:21give to you this morning is not tentative.
- 22:24They're not tentative mercies, as if he's kind of reluctant,
- 22:27but He'll give it to you anyway. No, it's His tender mercies.
- 22:33And I love what Jeremiah says in Lamentations Chapter 3.
- 22:36You know, for those nights that you go home and you lay your
- 22:39head down in the pillow and you think, man, I just blew it
- 22:42today. I was a horrible employee.
- 22:45I said things I regretted. My wife and I got in a fight.
- 22:49I'm a horrible man. I'm a horrible husband.
- 22:51I'm a horrible dad. I'm a horrible pastor.
- 22:53But Jeremiah writes there in Lamentations 3.
- 22:56But His mercies are new every morning, which means we get to
- 23:01wake up the next day and have a fresh start, a second chance, a
- 23:06clean slate. Because His mercies are new
- 23:10every morning. And He offers you today all of
- 23:13that mercy that is available. But listen, we don't get the
- 23:17benefit of all of that if we don't confess our sin to make it
- 23:22right with Him. The reason is because sin is a
- 23:25big deal. It has to be dealt with because
- 23:29it affects, as I mentioned, our relationship with God.
- 23:32It gets in the way. And the thing about confession
- 23:35is this. It's not enough just to go to
- 23:38the person that you hurt and ask for forgiveness, although that
- 23:42is important and that's something we need to do.
- 23:45It's not enough just to feel really bad about our sin.
- 23:47It's not enough to be angry with myself over my sin.
- 23:51But David here asks 3 things that are needed, and these can
- 23:55be 3 things we can pray as we're in that place #1 He says blot
- 24:00out there in verse one. Number two, he says wash me in
- 24:05verse 2. And then #3 also in verse 2, he
- 24:08says cleanse me, blot out, wash me and cleanse me.
- 24:15He says this blot out my transgression.
- 24:19To turn to transgress is to purposely walk across a line
- 24:24that you were told not to. It's like the kid, if any of us,
- 24:28our parents, we know this, the typical candy jar analogy where
- 24:32the kid puts his hand in the candy jar and you're like, no,
- 24:35no, no, no, don't eat that. We're going to eat dinner soon.
- 24:37And the kid looks at you anyway and he grabs a whole handful.
- 24:39Like, what are you going to do about it?
- 24:41Right? You have literally walked across
- 24:43a line because you were told not to.
- 24:46My wife reminded me today that my daughter, we used to have
- 24:49these dumb, dumb lollipops on our table and we would notice
- 24:52that they were missing and, and, and my wife was like, where,
- 24:55where are these going? So she would ask the kids.
- 24:57I don't know where they're going.
- 24:57She's like, well, I told you guys, you're only allowed one.
- 24:59And that's after dinner. And then one day she went to go
- 25:02do the laundry and she pulls my daughter's blanket over and
- 25:05there's all these dumb, dumb wrappers and all these sticks in
- 25:08there. Abby, my daughter and I got her
- 25:10permission to share that story. She crossed over a line she knew
- 25:13she shouldn't have because we told her one dumb, dumb after
- 25:17dinner. David knew this.
- 25:19David knew the commandments don't murder, but he stepped
- 25:23over that line, didn't he? He knew the commandment don't
- 25:26covet your neighbor's wife, and yet he stepped over that line.
- 25:31And here's the thing about transgression is he did it
- 25:33purposely, and he did it willfully anyway.
- 25:37Anyway. Now imagine for a moment if
- 25:41every lustful thought that you've ever had was recorded in
- 25:44a book. Every mean word that you've ever
- 25:48uttered was written down. Imagine every drunk night where
- 25:53you just went home and got plastered, or you went home and
- 25:56got high. Those dates were written down.
- 25:59How about every single time that you looked at pornography and
- 26:02those times were jotted down? That might be pages and pages.
- 26:06Every lie that you've ever committed, or every time you've
- 26:09cheated. Imagine that they were in a book
- 26:12and they were all recorded against you.
- 26:17But then imagine Jesus shows up on the scene and he asks, would
- 26:22you like every wrong and every inappropriate thing that you've
- 26:26ever said and ever done? Would you like that to be erased
- 26:29from the record of your life? And I would be the first in line
- 26:32to say yes, please, and then burn that book.
- 26:35I don't want anybody to see it. I don't want it to be put up in
- 26:38the screen there for all of you guys to see.
- 26:40Right? And to blot out literally means
- 26:43to wipe away, like erasing the writing out of a book is the
- 26:48idea. And it is no longer accounted to
- 26:52your life. It's like a debt that you
- 26:54incurred that has been forgiven. And David is saying here, my
- 26:59adultery, my lying, my trying to cover it up, the murder of my
- 27:04friend Uriah, blot all of that out of my life, Lord, erase it.
- 27:09Just like my purposeful transgression never happened.
- 27:15He continues here in verse 2. And wash me thoroughly,
- 27:18completely is the idea from my iniquity.
- 27:22Iniquity just means this. We are twisted inside.
- 27:26If you've ever heard somebody say watch out for that guy, that
- 27:28guy's twisted, right? That's what that word iniquity
- 27:31means. And he's saying wash me from
- 27:34that twistedness inside of me and cleanse me from my sin where
- 27:38I have missed the mark. The word wash here in Hebrew,
- 27:42it's interesting. It's not to rinse or to soak.
- 27:45Like if you've got a dirty, sweaty shirt that you put into
- 27:48the washing machine and you and you rinse it and soak it and it
- 27:51spins, right? No, no, it's this idea in
- 27:54Hebrew. It's a specific word that means
- 27:56with the feet. And so when something like a
- 28:00garment was really dirty, and even still in parts of the world
- 28:03today, they do this. You would take that garment, you
- 28:05would put it into a stone basin, and then somebody would get in
- 28:09there with their feet and trample on it to get all of the
- 28:12dirt out of that garment. And that's what David is saying
- 28:17here. He's saying, wash me thoroughly.
- 28:20Would you get all the dirt and all the grime and all the smell
- 28:24out of this? There's a labor that is in this
- 28:28and he's saying, so Lord, would you work on this?
- 28:31Because I can't do it. I can't do it, he continues.
- 28:35And cleanse me from my sin. Again, the cleansing is not
- 28:40something we can do for ourselves.
- 28:41David is saying, God, it's only something you can do.
- 28:45And for those of us that are here today, I believe the
- 28:49majority of us that have put our faith and our trust in Jesus.
- 28:53The Bible tells us this. You have already been watched by
- 28:57the blood of Jesus Christ. It says the moment you said yes
- 29:01to Jesus, the blood that was poured out as he hung on the
- 29:05cross for our sin was washed. You took away all of your sin.
- 29:11Tells us this first. John 17, the blood of Jesus
- 29:14cleanses us from all sin. Not most of our sin, not the
- 29:19small sins, but those couple big ones.
- 29:20You're on your own. He says the blood of Jesus
- 29:23cleanses us from all of our sin. How about this one?
- 29:26Hebrews 914 It tells us there the blood of Jesus purges your
- 29:31conscience from dead works to serve the living God.
- 29:36In other words, God has a big eraser that could almost be the
- 29:42title of the study today. And through the blood of Jesus
- 29:45he erases and he washes all of our sin away.
- 29:50He cleanses us. And so whatever sin you are
- 29:54carrying today, brother or sister, do you want the weight
- 29:58of that removed? Do you want it blotted out of
- 30:02the story of your life as if it never existed?
- 30:05If you're here and you don't know Jesus, then the invitation
- 30:10for you today is that today is the day of salvation.
- 30:14And you can get washed of all of your sin as well if you put your
- 30:19trust in Him to do that, to forgive you and to save you.
- 30:24And He, He would love to. That's what He wants, believer.
- 30:31He would also love that for you because he says first John 19.
- 30:34If you confess your sin, which literally means to say the same
- 30:38thing God says about it. It's like taking it from the
- 30:42darkness and putting it right underneath the light.
- 30:44Here it is and all of its ugliness.
- 30:47If you confess your sin, He is faithful.
- 30:51Doesn't say you have to be faithful.
- 30:52You've already proven I'm not faithful.
- 30:54He is faithful and he is just and he will forgive you, it
- 30:59says, and cleanse you from all of your sin.
- 31:03That word cleanse is in the Greek there catherizo.
- 31:08It's the same word that we get catherizer.
- 31:11What is the word catheter? Catheter from which thankfully
- 31:15I've never needed one yet, but I know the idea behind it is that
- 31:18it flushes the toxins out of your body.
- 31:22And that's what he's saying. If you confess your sin, God is
- 31:24faithful. God is just, he'll forgive you
- 31:26and he'll flush all of the toxins, all of the sin, all of
- 31:30all of that out of your heart. So then what does confession
- 31:34look like? David gives us a great example
- 31:36of it here in verse three. He says this for I acknowledge
- 31:41my transgression. This is after David trying to
- 31:44hide his transgression for a year.
- 31:47This is after David saying, I just hope it all goes away.
- 31:51He says here, no, no, I acknowledge it.
- 31:54And then he said something really interesting.
- 31:55My sin is always before me. I remember when I was a kid,
- 32:01probably 12 years old, I went out to go get the mail one day
- 32:05and I noticed that there was a card.
- 32:07And it was from my aunt because it had her name there, and she'd
- 32:09sent it to my dad. And I noticed that it was like a
- 32:12little thick in there. It wasn't just a card.
- 32:13It's kind of like when you get a birthday card, you're always
- 32:15like, is there like something in there for me?
- 32:17And so I went and opened the card.
- 32:19I shouldn't have done that. And as I opened it, there were
- 32:21$420.00 bills in there. Now, I was a kid in the 80s, so
- 32:26$80.00 was more like $800.00. But as a kid, it's more like
- 32:30$8000 today, right? And I'm like, this, this is
- 32:33cash, cold, hard cash. And I remember taking it and
- 32:36putting it in my pocket. And then I took the card and
- 32:39tore it up and threw it away. And my thought was my parents
- 32:42will never know because they'll just think it got lost in the
- 32:44mail. And then of course I wasn't a
- 32:47very smart kid. I went out and, and, and bought
- 32:49with that $80 eight of these things called cassette tapes.
- 32:53Have you guys heard of those? I loved music.
- 32:55And so I went and I come home with eight cassette tapes and my
- 32:58story in my mind is this 12 year old little Sinner was like, I'll
- 33:01just tell my parents somebody gave it to me, right.
- 33:04So then I hear at one point my my dad and mom having a
- 33:06conversation. Hey, did you get the card that
- 33:08came? No, no, no, She said she sent it
- 33:09was supposed to be here and the money that was in there was
- 33:12supposed to pay for something. And, and so they began to ask us
- 33:15kids and they came to me and I was like, I don't know what
- 33:17you're talking about. And, and, and of course, at some
- 33:20point, my parents weren't dumb. My dad realizes, wait a minute,
- 33:24you've been sitting in your room a lot listening to all this
- 33:26music. And at one evening, I remember
- 33:28very clearly, he comes and he sits down next to me and he
- 33:31gives me that look that only a father can give to a son.
- 33:34And he said, where did you get those cassette tapes?
- 33:37And at that moment I realized the gig is up.
- 33:41Like, I just, I got to come clean with him.
- 33:43I felt my heart was pounding. And I remember I took the $80.00
- 33:47and I went and spent it. And I, I won't tell you how he
- 33:50disciplined me, but I'll tell you I didn't get to keep those a
- 33:53cassette tapes, I'll tell you that much.
- 33:55But in that moment I was saying to him, I, I just had to
- 33:59acknowledge I was caught. I, I, I, I am guilty.
- 34:02And that's what David is saying here.
- 34:04He's saying I make full confession.
- 34:07He's saying if justice were to prevail because of my sin, I'd
- 34:10be done for. It'd be over.
- 34:14But David is saying here, instead I cast myself on his
- 34:18mercy. And he says here my sin is
- 34:21always before me. Imagine that with David for over
- 34:26a year, every time he goes to bed and he lays his pillow, his
- 34:30head on his pillow again, he has all this weighing on him.
- 34:34Every time he looks in the mirror, he's looking at that
- 34:37face going, my sin is always before me.
- 34:39It's like in the rearview mirror of your life.
- 34:41It's always there for a year. I imagine he must have pictured
- 34:45Uriah's face. He must have remembered how
- 34:48loyal Uriah was to him and to the Kingdom and to the people
- 34:52and the integrity that Uriah had.
- 34:55He remembers how he gave Uriah the notes of his own death
- 34:59sentence to deliver. David is saying here, I think
- 35:03about that a lot. My sin is ever before me.
- 35:07It's eating away at me. He must have been playing that
- 35:10night with Bathsheba over and over and over again.
- 35:15Why didn't I turn away when I saw her?
- 35:17Why did I give into my lust? Why did I even stay back?
- 35:21I should have been out with my men.
- 35:22I'm over 50 years old. I'm a king.
- 35:25I'm God's anointed on the psalmist of Israel.
- 35:29Why would I do this? It wasn't worth it.
- 35:32And now I can't stop thinking about it.
- 35:36My sin is ever before me. It's never out of my mind.
- 35:40And what David is saying here is this God, I lay my sin before
- 35:44you because it's always before me.
- 35:48I can't escape it. I can't get rid of it.
- 35:52And here's the way that we'll know we're truly repented when
- 35:55it comes to the sin in our life. If my mind is no longer filled
- 35:59with the way that the sin is affecting me, 'cause if we're
- 36:02honest, most of the time when when our sin is found out, we're
- 36:06more upset about the consequences of sin because that
- 36:09hurts. But when, when it's no longer
- 36:13about me or it's no longer about maybe even the person that I
- 36:17hurt through my sin. But when I begin to feel the
- 36:20burden of how my sin effects God, that's when my know I know
- 36:25my heart is beginning to be positioned in the right place
- 36:27because he is the only one that could remove my guilt and my
- 36:32shame. Only he can do it.
- 36:34So he says in verse four against you and you only have I sinned.
- 36:41And you might be thinking, OK, wait a minute.
- 36:42Didn't he sin against Uriah? Didn't he sin against Bathsheba?
- 36:45Didn't he sin against Joab? How about all the other people?
- 36:49And of course the answer is yes. But David has the right context
- 36:52here to all of that in comparison to all of those who
- 36:55have been hurt. And by the way, we never sin
- 36:58unto ourself. Sin always affects the person
- 37:02next to us, even if we're alone in the room and we think no one
- 37:05else knows. It has a way of, of affecting
- 37:07the people that we love. But in comparison to all those
- 37:11who have been hurt, David's understanding here, God has been
- 37:14hurt the most. And we will never come to terms
- 37:17with our sin until we have personal dealings with God
- 37:21first, with him first. And one of the reasons why is
- 37:25because when we sinned, God saw it.
- 37:29God was there, He knows it's happening.
- 37:32So we can't excuse it. We can't try to soften it.
- 37:35We can't pretend it wasn't as bad as it was because he was
- 37:39there, He saw it, and it broke his heart.
- 37:43The one that is merciful to you, the one that loves you, the one
- 37:47that is kind to you. David is saying here, my
- 37:50failure, God was with you. And all the other failures are
- 37:54secondary to that failure. And and again, God, you're the
- 37:59only one that can remove my guilt.
- 38:00He continues in verse four against you.
- 38:04Have I sinned and done this evil in your sight?
- 38:07You saw it, God that you may be found just when you speak and
- 38:12blameless when you judge. In other words, he's saying,
- 38:15God, you would be right and you are right in your judgment of me
- 38:21because you saw me sin. I I I there's, there's nothing I
- 38:24can say about that. Verse 5 he says behold or
- 38:29consider this is the idea. Take note of this.
- 38:32I was brought forth in iniquity and in sin.
- 38:36My mother conceives me and this is the first order of our faith,
- 38:40right? We understand first and foremost
- 38:42we were born sinners. Bible says all have sinned and
- 38:46fallen short of the glory of God and David is acknowledging the
- 38:49reason that I sinned is because I am a Sinner or I am a Sinner
- 38:55because I was born in sin. I'm a Sinner by nature and I'm a
- 39:00Sinner by choice. I've chosen it.
- 39:03He continues in verse 6. He says, behold again, consider
- 39:07this your desire God, you desire truth in the inward parts and in
- 39:12the hidden part. You will make me to know wisdom.
- 39:17See, even in church, the gathering this morning, we can
- 39:20show up. We can have our Bible under our
- 39:23arm. We can look at one another and
- 39:25say, God bless you. We can lift our hands and our
- 39:28worship while we're living in adultery.
- 39:32We can show up while we're living in sexual sin.
- 39:35We can show up here and and worship the Lord and then leave
- 39:38to go back and get intoxicated later in the day.
- 39:42But what David is saying here is God desires truth, not in the
- 39:45outward performance, but in the inward part, in the hidden
- 39:50parts. And for us, the only way to have
- 39:54a clean heart is to have a bent knee and to come to the Lord in
- 40:00humility and just say, as David said, I'm undone.
- 40:04I can't outrun my sin. I have to own my sin.
- 40:07And I confess it in your presence, Lord.
- 40:10And then God is so good, because he will say back to you, you are
- 40:16forgiven. And I'm going to do a deep
- 40:18cleansing work in your life. So his first prayer there was
- 40:23Cleanse Me. And his second prayer here is
- 40:26Restore me Now Cleanse me and then restore me, verses 7
- 40:30through 12, verse 7, purge me with hyssop and I shall be
- 40:34clean. Wash me and I shall be whiter
- 40:37than snow. Hyssop isn't something that we
- 40:40are very familiar with, but certainly in Israel they knew
- 40:42exactly what this was. It was a herb that grew in
- 40:46Israel, still does today. As a matter of fact, if you go
- 40:48to Israel and you go to the Wailing Wall or the the Western
- 40:51Wall there you'll see hyssop growing out of the cracks there
- 40:54of the wall and and it would be dipped in blood and the hyssop
- 40:58would be used used to sprinkle the blood.
- 41:01Or if you remember the story in the Old Testament, it would be
- 41:05used like a brush when the Israelites were told to cover
- 41:08the lentils and the doorpost of their home with the blood of the
- 41:12lamb so that the Angel of the Lord would Passover.
- 41:15That's that where that idea, the Passover came from.
- 41:19And David is saying here, I know that this cleansing is something
- 41:23that the Lord does and he continues here in verse 7, wash
- 41:27me and I shall be whiter than snow.
- 41:31Isaiah would say, though your sins be as scarlet as deep, deep
- 41:35red, you shall be washed whiter than snow.
- 41:38So my question for you today is, do you believe this?
- 41:42Do you believe this not for the others around you, but do you
- 41:46believe it for you is the grace of God and the blood of Jesus
- 41:50that He shed on the cross of Calvary Church?
- 41:52Is it greater than all of our sins?
- 41:55It is. There's nothing in you that the
- 41:58blood of Jesus can't cleanse. And this is the promise for you,
- 42:03brother. And this is the promise for you,
- 42:07sister, purchased in the blood of Christ as the payment for
- 42:11whatever sin that you are carrying.
- 42:14My sin is great, but His grace is greater than all of my sin.
- 42:21He continues, Make me hear joy, verse 8, and gladness that the
- 42:26bones you have broken may rejoice.
- 42:28He's saying, make me or cause me.
- 42:31Lord, I can't do this. No one else can do this for me.
- 42:35Lord, You alone need to make this happen in me for it to be
- 42:39real, to hear joy again. It has been a minute since I've
- 42:44been able to feel joy and to hear gladness.
- 42:47He continues in verse nine, Hide your face from my sins.
- 42:51And he says, once again, blot out all of my iniquity.
- 42:56He's saying, Lord, please don't look at my sin.
- 43:00It's too much. It is, it is shameful.
- 43:04It it's disgraceful. I'm so embarrassed.
- 43:08Lord, don't look at it. And there's this beautiful
- 43:11verse. Could you write this down?
- 43:13Isaiah 43 verse 25, Isaiah 4325 God speaking here, I believe
- 43:20this was this is what God would have said to David.
- 43:23God says this I even I and he who blots out your transgression
- 43:30from my own sake and I will not remember your sense.
- 43:38God's saying that he chooses not to bring it up again.
- 43:42It tells us in another place that he throws it into the sea
- 43:46of forgetfulness. He chooses not to hold our sin
- 43:50against us anymore. And then this beautiful verse in
- 43:54verse 10. It was a song that many of us
- 43:56knew. Keith Green wrote this create in
- 43:58me a clean heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within
- 44:03me. David here is acknowledging, as
- 44:06it says in the in the Proverbs, all of the issues of our life
- 44:10flow from our hearts. And so our hearts need to
- 44:13change. The heart is the center of my
- 44:15will. It's the core of who I am.
- 44:19And this word to create here is the same word that's used in
- 44:23Genesis chapter 1. It's the word Bara Bara when it
- 44:27says God created the heavens and the earth and it literally means
- 44:31to create something from nothing.
- 44:34And that's how God created the earth.
- 44:36There was nothing and he created Barra, something from nothing.
- 44:40And and David is saying my heart got me into this mess.
- 44:44My heart is dirty. And I'm calling on the creator
- 44:47of the earth who spoke the world into existence to come and to
- 44:51create and to speak a clean heart in me.
- 44:54Not a patched up heart, not a rehabilitated heart, but a clean
- 44:58heart. It was dirty.
- 45:00Create something from nothing. A clean heart God and renew a
- 45:05steadfast spirit in me. David is saying it was once
- 45:08there. I was once walking with you.
- 45:12I had a right spirit. I was constant.
- 45:16I would sit alone in the fields and and and write my songs.
- 45:19I'd lift lift up to the my eyes to the heavens say Lord our
- 45:22Lord, how majestic is your name and all the earth.
- 45:26It was once there. Lord, would you make it new
- 45:29again in me? And I just pray this morning
- 45:34that you would make that plea to the Lord yourself.
- 45:37If you need to create in me, create in me.
- 45:41I can't do it. But Lord, you can Verse 11, do
- 45:46not cast me away from your presence.
- 45:49Do not take your Holy Spirit from me again.
- 45:51I'm so thankful we don't have to pray this today because David is
- 45:56not speaking here in the context of New Testament theology.
- 46:00Because for us as God's children, as his sons, as his
- 46:04daughters, he has promised never to leave us, never to forsake
- 46:07us. He says at the moment we were
- 46:09saved, the Holy Spirit of God was with us and he is in us.
- 46:13He indwells us and he says that we are sealed with the Holy
- 46:17Spirit until the day of redemption.
- 46:19It's the guarantee of our inheritance.
- 46:22So God can't leave us. He promises He won't leave us,
- 46:26but sin does break our relationship with the Lord, our
- 46:30fellowship with the Lord, and it does break the sense of His
- 46:34presence in our life. And unconfessed sin will break
- 46:40what the Holy Spirit wants to give to you.
- 46:42Let me just give you a brief little list of what the Holy
- 46:45Spirit wants to do. He wants to comfort you when
- 46:48your heart is broken. But if again, if, if there's a
- 46:53pipe and he wants to bring comfort and flow that comfort
- 46:56through that pipe, sin is the the thing that clogs that
- 46:59comfort. He wants to give counsel when we
- 47:02don't know what to do. Bible says he's the mighty
- 47:05counselor. He, he wants to give you help in
- 47:09your time of need. Who doesn't want help in their
- 47:11time of need? He wants to convict you when
- 47:14your hearts begin to go off course so that you don't find
- 47:17yourself over in another place of deep brokenness again.
- 47:20He wants to fill you and to empower you as a man or a woman
- 47:24who is alive. And then David would say here in
- 47:28our last verse, verse 12, restore to me the joy, the joy
- 47:35of your salvation. He's saying, Lord, would you put
- 47:38that back in me again and uphold me by your generous spirit?
- 47:44It had been a long time since David experienced that joy.
- 47:51Over a year, maybe even longer, because no one just wakes up and
- 47:55decides overnight, I'm going to commit adultery.
- 47:57There's there's slow compromise that sets in somewhere before
- 48:00that something gets in the way of us and Jesus.
- 48:04And so let me ask you, when was the last time you experienced
- 48:07the joy of your salvation? How long have you felt far from
- 48:13God this morning? Let me tell you, God is ready to
- 48:17do what he did in David's life. He is ready to restore that joy
- 48:21to you and that gladness that he speaks of there in verse eight.
- 48:25And only God can do that work in you.
- 48:29So His invitation to you today is to ask for it, and then God
- 48:34will do it for His glory and for your good.
- 48:39And He has proven that He will do it because He sent his one
- 48:43and only Son to bleed his life into the ground.
- 48:48To say this is the cost. It's a free gift to us, but it
- 48:54cost him everything. Cost him everything.
- 48:57And then He will uphold you when you feel like you're going to
- 49:00fall, when you don't have the strength to take the next step.
- 49:03He will uphold you with His generous spirits.
- 49:09So again, the prayer for US #1 cleanse me #2 restore me.
- 49:16And then as you read the rest of the chapter here, we don't have
- 49:18time today, but David will say from verse 13 to the end, use me
- 49:23again. Use me again.
- 49:26And though David was never the great king of Israel that he
- 49:29once was, after this season in his life, David did become the
- 49:34sweet psalmist of Israel. And he was and is forever known
- 49:40as a man after God's own heart. So his worship team comes back
- 49:47up and we get ready to close. I want to give you one final
- 49:50take away. If you're taking notes, you can
- 49:52jot this down. One final take away here.
- 49:56Your past will always be in front of you until you let Jesus
- 50:00put it behind you. Your past will always be in
- 50:05front of you until you let Jesus put it behind you.
- 50:09Think about the toll that this took on David's life.
- 50:12It took a physical toll on David Again.
- 50:14Verse 8 says he felt as though his bones were broken.
- 50:18It took a deep emotional toll on David.
- 50:22Verse 12 he says restore to me the joy of my salvation.
- 50:26I've lost that. It took a spiritual toll on
- 50:30David. Verse 11 tells us David's saying
- 50:32there cast me not from your presence.
- 50:35He knew that sin affected his fellowship with the Lord and his
- 50:38ability to sense his presence and his relationship was
- 50:42affected. It took a relational toll on
- 50:46David. One of the things that Nathan
- 50:48said is the sword is never going to depart from your house,
- 50:51David, because of your sin. There's going to be some
- 50:53consequences. David's son Absalom, hated his
- 50:56dad, rebelled against his dad, wanted his dad dead, tried to
- 51:01overthrow the Kingdom and take the throne.
- 51:04His best friends lost respect for him.
- 51:08And you know, the child that was born to David and Bathsheba from
- 51:12that one night of sin, the baby was born, but seven days later
- 51:20contracted some kind of an illness and that baby died.
- 51:25But they would have another son after that baby.
- 51:28And they named that little boy Solomon.
- 51:32And I'm sure that David sat down with Solomon as a little boy, as
- 51:36a teenager, shared the story with him.
- 51:40He said, Solomon, don't, don't do what I did.
- 51:43Let me tell you what God taught me.
- 51:45Let me tell you why I wrote Psalm 51.
- 51:49And then later on, as Solomon became a man in the king, he
- 51:54would write this Solomon in Proverbs 2813.
- 51:58I have no doubt that if Solomon wrote this, he was thinking of
- 52:01his dad. As he said, he who covers his
- 52:06sin will not prosper, but whoever confesses and forsakes
- 52:12them will have mercy. Mercy.
- 52:17It's not a good word. He's a merciful God.
- 52:24I want to ask us to do this, if we could just close our eyes and
- 52:27bow our hearts before the Lord. We often do this at the end of a
- 52:30service, some kind of a response.
- 52:33I really felt like this today. Needed a response.
- 52:38There was a woman last night after teaching this that shared
- 52:42with one of the pastor's she'd been struggling with addiction,
- 52:47came in to the sanctuary with that weight.
- 52:52And then I asked, as I'm going to ask for us to do here, if you
- 52:55just want to lay this before the Lord, to stand.
- 52:58And she stood and she said she felt immediately that it was
- 53:01forgiven and it was gone. Because sometimes there's
- 53:03something about just acknowledging in the presence of
- 53:05the Lord, a moment in time where I am choosing to say, I believe
- 53:10this and I'm leaving it here at the altar.
- 53:14Nobody's going to ask you, hey, what are you standing for?
- 53:18None of their business. It's between you and the Lord.
- 53:20So if you want to do business with the Lord and you want to
- 53:24just confess that right now here in his presence, I just invite
- 53:27you to stand. I invite you to stand in
- 53:30reality, we could all stand. Bible says he who says they have
- 53:34no sin and says that God is a liar.
- 53:36But if there's anybody here that just wants that freedom, if
- 53:40there's anybody here that just wants to say I'm done, I don't
- 53:43want it anymore, I could care less if I'm embarrassing myself
- 53:46by standing. You're not, by the way, because
- 53:48you're in a room full of redeemed people that have
- 53:51sinned. This is a hospital.
- 53:54If we can't stand and acknowledge that here, where
- 53:57else are we going to do it? We're amongst God's redeemed
- 54:00people. We are all broken people.
- 54:03We are all sinners in need of God's mercy.
- 54:06Nobody is more surprised that I get to stand up here in the
- 54:09pulpit and communicate this message to you than I am.
- 54:12It's nothing but the grace of God.
- 54:16And by standing, this can be a moment in time when you can say
- 54:20the sin that I brought into this place, I ain't leaving.
- 54:25I ain't leaving with it. I'm keeping it here.
- 54:30This isn't necessarily a salvation call, although if you
- 54:32don't know Jesus, this is the day for you to come and
- 54:37experience all of this yourself. You can stand for that as well.
- 54:42But for the rest of us, as we close here, I want to just pray
- 54:473 verses over you. After David wrote Psalm 51, he
- 54:52wrote another Psalm in response to what God had done through the
- 54:58prayer of that broken heart, that guilty heart in Psalm 51.
- 55:02And that's in Psalm 32. And for those of you that are
- 55:05standing, hear these words as I read them over you on behalf of
- 55:11God Almighty Himself. Here's what he says.
- 55:14Blessed is he whose transgression is forgiven, whose
- 55:18sin is covered. Blessed is the man to whom the
- 55:21Lord does not impute iniquity and whose spirit there is no
- 55:24deceit. I love this.
- 55:26Psalm 325I acknowledged my sin to you and my iniquity.
- 55:32I've not hidden. I said I will confess my
- 55:35transgressions to the Lord, and you forgave the iniquity of my
- 55:41sin. And that is a promise from God
- 55:46to those that are standing. It's also a promise to those of
- 55:49you who are too ashamed to stand.
- 55:53I understand, I understand, I've been there.
- 55:56And so God, as we close out the service here, we pray for every
- 55:59person. You know their story.
- 56:03You know what it is that they've brought into this place.
- 56:07You know the way, Lord, as we've heard today, the sin can wear
- 56:10away at us. Our sin is great, but Your grace
- 56:16is greater Lord, greater than all of our sin.
- 56:20And I want to pray for those here that don't know Jesus
- 56:22personally that today would be the day of salvation.
- 56:26That if they would confess with their mouth the Lord Jesus and
- 56:29believe in their heart that God raised him from the dead.
- 56:31The promises for you, brother or sister, you will be saved.
- 56:35For what the heart one believes under righteousness with the
- 56:37mouth, confession is made unto salvation.
- 56:40Today's the day if you believe the free gift of salvation is
- 56:44given to you in this moment and your sins are forgiven.
- 56:49For those of you that confess your sin, He is faithful.
- 56:51He is just to forgive you and to flush it all out of you.
- 56:55And you are now in right standing with God.
- 57:02And so Lord Jesus, we just say as a church, thank you, thank
- 57:08you Lord, what else can we say? Lord, you have been so gracious,
- 57:13so merciful, so kind. Lord, I'm so thankful that
- 57:16you're not out to embarrass us. I'm so thankful, God, that
- 57:19you're not out to whack us. Lord, I'm so thankful that your
- 57:22heart is to be merciful to us. Lord.
- 57:26And it's not something, again, that you're reluctant to do,
- 57:28Lord. It is something that in your
- 57:30tender mercies, you're willing to give a multitude of them.
- 57:34A mercy for every sin. Lord, thank you.
- 57:37God, we acknowledge your presence in this place.
- 57:39We acknowledge the work that you're doing.
- 57:41I pray that you'd seal up the commitments of these confessions
- 57:44that are made and I pray that you would break the chain of
- 57:46whatever sin has been represented in this place so
- 57:50that you we can walk together, myself, all of us as a church
- 57:54and, and, and the way that you want us to walk in freedom and
- 57:57in victory because of the blood of Jesus Christ.
- 58:00We pray now in the name of Jesus.
- 58:02Amen. Amen.
