- 0:02Speaker 1: Ft presented by Fox One.
- 0:04Speaker 2: You know, I feel like we're always really good with
- 0:05Speaker 2: the chat answering their questions.
- 0:07Speaker 1: Do either of you have a question for the chat question.
- 0:10Speaker 3: Of who do we think wins? Is world series? That's
- 0:13Speaker 3: the question who do we think wins?
- 0:16Speaker 4: And I know Dodger fans are gonna say the Dodgers
- 0:18Speaker 4: and Blue Jays fans are gonna say the Blue Jays.
- 0:19Speaker 4: But the people who aren't one of their fans, who's
- 0:22Speaker 4: gonna win? Because it's down to best of three and
- 0:25Speaker 4: everyone thought this was kind of gonna be a whitewashing
- 0:27Speaker 4: by the Dodgers, and it hasn't been. It's been a
- 0:29Speaker 4: very competitive, very fun series to watch.
- 0:32Speaker 1: Yeah, no wash out. Let's start Best Step three, Best
- 0:37Speaker 1: Step three.
- 0:38Speaker 2: Baby, Here's where I'm gonna start before we charge. So
- 0:43Speaker 2: I had a back and forth with a fan, and
- 0:45Speaker 2: I've done this with a few of the great Blue
- 0:47Speaker 2: Jays fans. You know, we always do a segment or
- 0:52Speaker 2: a show like our post game show last night, and
- 0:54Speaker 2: you get the crowd.
- 0:55Speaker 1: That goes, oh, they love the Dodgers, Oh they love
- 0:57Speaker 1: the Blue Jays.
- 0:58Speaker 5: Right.
- 0:58Speaker 2: We got that almost every show now, which is great.
- 1:00Speaker 2: That means we're doing our jobs. Yes, So I decided
- 1:04Speaker 2: to engage with one. Oh why because I enjoy it?
- 1:08Speaker 4: You enjoy torture, enjoy you enjoy torture, or you enjoy
- 1:11Speaker 4: arguing with someone that doesn't have earlier reason.
- 1:14Speaker 2: I'm actually like trying to promote peace by saying, hey, like,
- 1:17Speaker 2: how can we be better for you?
- 1:19Speaker 1: And let me explain my perspective here? Right. So I
- 1:22Speaker 1: went through the entire rundown of what we.
- 1:24Speaker 2: Did last night, right right, because he's like, hey, you
- 1:26Speaker 2: guys are just talking about the Dodgers offense not performing.
- 1:30Speaker 2: What about respect for the Blue Jays, Like you guys
- 1:32Speaker 2: don't even watch them? Or I've watched every Blue Jays
- 1:35Speaker 2: postseason game, every Blue.
- 1:37Speaker 1: Jays postseason game.
- 1:38Speaker 2: Okay, So I went through how we spent what twelve
- 1:41Speaker 2: minutes on the postgame show to start, and it was
- 1:44Speaker 2: all about Vlad and the big seventh inning, etc. Right,
- 1:47Speaker 2: So we went through the whole thing, and I just
- 1:48Speaker 2: said and he appreciated that, and his response was more
- 1:52Speaker 2: about how he feels like the one Canadian team in
- 1:55Speaker 2: the sport doesn't get respect and how it's looked at
- 1:58Speaker 2: in the US. I have replied to him, Ye, because
- 2:00Speaker 2: I'm gonna do it on this show. We do not
- 2:03Speaker 2: care where the team resides.
- 2:06Speaker 4: Why would we care where the team resides. I mean,
- 2:08Speaker 4: we did a whole thing on the expos.
- 2:10Speaker 1: I think it's cool that there's a team in Canada.
- 2:12Speaker 4: I think there are I wish there was a team
- 2:15Speaker 4: in London, Tokyo when I was playing. That would have
- 2:18Speaker 4: been awesome to flight all those different places in play. Like,
- 2:21Speaker 4: I love going to Canada, you know, other than other
- 2:24Speaker 4: than the ketchup is a little bit different when you
- 2:25Speaker 4: go to like McDonald's and there's things that tastes just
- 2:28Speaker 4: a little bit different. They have a lot of relief
- 2:31Speaker 4: delicious stuff in Canada, and I enjoyed the people there.
- 2:33Speaker 4: I enjoyed going there. I enjoyed the Rogers Center. I
- 2:36Speaker 4: didn't hit very well there, but I still enjoyed going there.
- 2:38Speaker 2: Well, I think krats for me. The perception from some is, oh, well,
- 2:43Speaker 2: they're just paying attention to their own country. And if
- 2:45Speaker 2: you're in the country, I know with US three, you
- 2:48Speaker 2: would think completely differently. If anything, you can make a
- 2:51Speaker 2: case for some of the teams who maybe are in
- 2:53Speaker 2: super small markets and their owner doesn't give a crap
- 2:56Speaker 2: and so they're never relevant, right like Rockies fans have
- 2:59Speaker 2: much more beef.
- 3:00Speaker 3: Yes, Blue Jays.
- 3:01Speaker 2: We talk about the Blue Jays a ton, and I
- 3:03Speaker 2: think they have a ton of respect in our sport.
- 3:05Speaker 2: And I think there's nothing that says, oh, they're in Canada,
- 3:10Speaker 2: so let's give them.
- 3:11Speaker 1: Less attention, or like let's watch less games of them.
- 3:14Speaker 2: And I'm not speaking for you know, the Yankees and
- 3:16Speaker 2: Blue Jays have beef with the broadcasters, like fun beef.
- 3:19Speaker 2: Oh they're not good, they're not relevant. Both sides have
- 3:21Speaker 2: done that all year. We're not involved in that. But
- 3:23Speaker 2: help me out here.
- 3:25Speaker 3: No, I could really care less where the team is,
- 3:29Speaker 3: like it's death.
- 3:30Speaker 6: Besides AJ hating the Cubs, I'm pretty sure there's no
- 3:34Speaker 6: way we're going to cover any team less that's in
- 3:37Speaker 6: the World Series. If it was the Cubs, maybe we
- 3:39Speaker 6: wouldn't cover them, but now we still would.
- 3:43Speaker 3: We would cover them. You're right, we would.
- 3:45Speaker 6: But no, it doesn't matter that they're in Canada. They
- 3:49Speaker 6: could be in Buffalo like they were the in COVID,
- 3:52Speaker 6: or the year after COVID they were in Dunedin, like
- 3:54Speaker 6: they're a big league team. As long as they're a
- 3:56Speaker 6: big league team, We're going to give them just the
- 3:59Speaker 6: same amount of love and the same amount of hate
- 4:01Speaker 6: as we give any other team.
- 4:03Speaker 1: Thank you.
- 4:04Speaker 2: That's all so I was. I'm not complaining. It's not
- 4:06Speaker 2: like a back and forth fight. I just wanted more
- 4:08Speaker 2: for our Canadian events to know that we love you
- 4:10Speaker 2: just as much.
- 4:11Speaker 1: Yes, and with that, let's charge we have no problem
- 4:14Speaker 1: charge about And with that we're going to start talking
- 4:19Speaker 1: about the Dodgers.
- 4:22Speaker 3: Well are we Why now we.
- 4:23Speaker 1: Can go either direction.
- 4:24Speaker 2: This is just a ten minute preview before we talked
- 4:27Speaker 2: to Ken Rosenthal. Oh but after our postgame show, which
- 4:31Speaker 2: we'll do another postgame show after the next game, Game five.
- 4:34Speaker 2: But after our Game four post game show, Dave Roberts
- 4:36Speaker 2: spoke and said something that was a big topic on
- 4:39Speaker 2: our show.
- 4:39Speaker 1: I'm going to sleep.
- 4:40Speaker 2: I'm gonna think long and hard at night about any
- 4:43Speaker 2: potential lineup changes. Okay to me, that means he's going
- 4:47Speaker 2: to make at least one change. When you start saying that,
- 4:52Speaker 2: I feel like one change.
- 4:53Speaker 3: What's a change?
- 4:54Speaker 6: Though?
- 4:55Speaker 3: It's call for pahes.
- 4:57Speaker 1: I'm you know.
- 4:58Speaker 2: I was up, couldn't sleep last night and started looking
- 5:01Speaker 2: into Kim and his numbers because I'm like, why is
- 5:04Speaker 2: he completely irrelevant in the postseason?
- 5:06Speaker 1: They don't think that.
- 5:08Speaker 2: I think he's I like that idea. Let's figure out
- 5:13Speaker 2: a way to get Kim in the lineup, Kratz, what
- 5:15Speaker 2: about you.
- 5:17Speaker 3: I don't think they'll go that far outside the box
- 5:19Speaker 3: for some reason. I don't think they've they've let him.
- 5:22Speaker 6: I think my suggestion the other day, if Tommy Edmond
- 5:26Speaker 6: is completely out, like he cannot go, I like, he
- 5:32Speaker 6: can't go to the center field, then you know, the
- 5:35Speaker 6: change is probably call I think that's kind of a
- 5:38Speaker 6: boring change in my opinion, because he's gonna have a
- 5:41Speaker 6: tough He's gonna have a tough writy. Alrighty, I think
- 5:43Speaker 6: Kim would give you. I think Kim would give you
- 5:45Speaker 6: a little bit of that you know, twenty nineteen Dodgers
- 5:50Speaker 6: platoon advantage that you're looking for.
- 5:52Speaker 1: Okay, Yeah, so we'll see what he does.
- 5:56Speaker 2: This episode is brought to you by Square, your favorite
- 6:00Speaker 2: neighborhood spots run on Square. Square is a proud partner
- 6:03Speaker 2: of more than four million neighborhood businesses around the world.
- 6:05Speaker 2: These businesses are what make the neighborhood the neighborhood. You
- 6:09Speaker 2: and I are both in Orlando, and I see Square
- 6:11Speaker 2: all the time at those awesome farmers' markets around.
- 6:14Speaker 4: Town, and a lot of restaurants in general just have
- 6:16Speaker 4: this story just to have the little thing plugged into
- 6:18Speaker 4: their phone and you stick your card in it and
- 6:20Speaker 4: wam bam, we're out.
- 6:22Speaker 3: It's cool. It's a way for local businesses to.
- 6:24Speaker 4: Make money and make it easy on not only them,
- 6:26Speaker 4: but also on me, the consumer, because lord knows, I'm
- 6:28Speaker 4: not making to so on making or so on anything.
- 6:30Speaker 2: No. And it's a quick it's a tap or on
- 6:33Speaker 2: your phone, double click.
- 6:35Speaker 4: You can even insert your chip if you want to
- 6:36Speaker 4: swipe it. It's it's awesome.
- 6:38Speaker 1: Yeah, it's changed the game.
- 6:40Speaker 2: You can go to Square dot com slash go slash
- 6:42Speaker 2: foul to learn more, but before you do, go support
- 6:44Speaker 2: your favorite neighborhood spot. You'll be happy that you did again.
- 6:48Speaker 2: Square dot com slash g o, slash foul to learn more.
- 6:52Speaker 1: Square see you in the neighborhood, Get after at FTFAM.
- 6:56Speaker 2: Now, pitching wise, let's start just while we're on on
- 7:00Speaker 2: Dave Roberts with how the Dodgers plan to.
- 7:04Speaker 1: Attack Trey Savage.
- 7:06Speaker 2: Not sing it the split, not swing at the split.
- 7:09Speaker 2: But it's a really good split. And how difficult is
- 7:12Speaker 2: it to differentiate a splitter like that from a heater.
- 7:18Speaker 4: It's really hard from the angle he throws from. The
- 7:20Speaker 4: split is always the hardest pitch. Was always the hardest
- 7:23Speaker 4: pitch to figure out, because like when you face Tim Hudson, right,
- 7:26Speaker 4: he throw that low sinker and then he throw the
- 7:28Speaker 4: split that came out exactly the same and it just
- 7:31Speaker 4: started on the same plane and went down. One of
- 7:32Speaker 4: them kind of ran away more of a two seamer,
- 7:35Speaker 4: And this was the speed and the movement. It was
- 7:37Speaker 4: glossy and movement when it comes out of the same
- 7:40Speaker 4: exact slot. Because when you teach somebody to throw a split, right, yeah,
- 7:44Speaker 4: so let me grab this ball real quick. Like, so
- 7:46Speaker 4: like let's say you hold your two seamer like this
- 7:48Speaker 4: right with the ball, and then you just take your
- 7:51Speaker 4: you take the same grip, but you just choke it
- 7:52Speaker 4: a little bit more like this. And everybody you teach
- 7:55Speaker 4: him to throw at the exacts, just throw it just
- 7:57Speaker 4: like you're throwing a fastball as hard as you can.
- 7:59Speaker 4: Just rip it, and it's the more of the ball
- 8:01Speaker 4: being back in your hands that slow it down. Now
- 8:04Speaker 4: everyone holds it a little bit different like you know,
- 8:06Speaker 4: some guys go way deep, like Jose Contreras used to
- 8:09Speaker 4: grip it like all the way back in his fingers
- 8:11Speaker 4: and have his fingers split, and it was.
- 8:12Speaker 3: Like a knuckleball, right.
- 8:14Speaker 4: But the good ones like Clemens Hudson that had the true,
- 8:18Speaker 4: like very late split, it was because of the speed
- 8:21Speaker 4: and the movement, and it looked exactly the same.
- 8:23Speaker 3: Coming out of their hand.
- 8:24Speaker 4: Because like people that say, oh, you see the dot,
- 8:27Speaker 4: you do see a little bit of a dot, but
- 8:28Speaker 4: it's so fast. But the split and the fastball look
- 8:31Speaker 4: exactly the same because they have they're supposed to.
- 8:33Speaker 3: Now some of them don't.
- 8:34Speaker 4: But it's so quick that you don't see anything and
- 8:37Speaker 4: it just goes shoot and then you're like.
- 8:39Speaker 3: Oh, get it, get the ball up.
- 8:40Speaker 4: Well, then if now guys throw high fastballs and split,
- 8:43Speaker 4: so you're like, oh, make it go up and it's
- 8:45Speaker 4: ninety eight of your chest.
- 8:46Speaker 1: You can't hit that either, and you recognize it so
- 8:49Speaker 1: late in the game.
- 8:50Speaker 4: That's that's the thing with the split. That's why to me,
- 8:52Speaker 4: it's always been the best pitch. And there was that
- 8:54Speaker 4: long time where oh, you'll hurt your arm if you
- 8:56Speaker 4: throw it.
- 8:57Speaker 3: Right, but it wasn't really the split. It was more
- 8:59Speaker 3: just others stuff that was going on.
- 9:01Speaker 2: Throwing hard. Apparently krats can cause arm issues.
- 9:06Speaker 6: Yeah, and some of the best splits that I've caught
- 9:08Speaker 6: guys like guys manipulated a little bit. I don't know
- 9:11Speaker 6: that your savage is there. My fear with you savage
- 9:14Speaker 6: is I don't think his stuff is nasty. I think
- 9:19Speaker 6: it comes from a unique angle. I think it comes
- 9:22Speaker 6: from a place where you know, the reason you're you
- 9:26Speaker 6: can't hit a pitch is because the reason you can't
- 9:28Speaker 6: hit a late life fastball is because you're thinking your
- 9:32Speaker 6: mind processes that it's gonna drop however many inches. And
- 9:37Speaker 6: when guys have late life fastballs, that's why it gets
- 9:40Speaker 6: on you. That's why they pop it up, That's why
- 9:42Speaker 6: they swing and miss under it. I don't think tray
- 9:44Speaker 6: you savage is stuff pops out very like. It's not
- 9:48Speaker 6: like unbelievable stuff. It's just coming from a weird angle.
- 9:53Speaker 6: So are the Dodgers. And have the Dodgers made enough
- 9:56Speaker 6: of a adjustment from seeing him one time? I mean last
- 10:00Speaker 6: time show he struck out, and then the next guy
- 10:03Speaker 6: to strike out with pages, So they went one through
- 10:06Speaker 6: nine nobody struck out and Max's Max's uh strike out
- 10:11Speaker 6: that he had Max Muncy that was like a splitter
- 10:15Speaker 6: that looked more like the forkball that he was that
- 10:18Speaker 6: Contraras used to throw that like just dove out of
- 10:21Speaker 6: the way and you'd see swings that You're like, I
- 10:24Speaker 6: don't know, So can they put it in play enough?
- 10:29Speaker 6: And is that you know, is he going to be
- 10:31Speaker 6: able to make an adjustment if they are putting it
- 10:33Speaker 6: in play to be able to get to another part
- 10:35Speaker 6: of the zone.
- 10:37Speaker 1: Okay, so that's the Dodgers attack plan. What about the
- 10:41Speaker 1: Toronto attack plan.
- 10:42Speaker 3: The same exact one they had on Snow in the
- 10:44Speaker 3: first game.
- 10:45Speaker 1: But what if Snell's stuff is like it was in the.
- 10:47Speaker 3: Prior, You gotta attack Blake Snow early kind of.
- 10:50Speaker 4: You can't let him get the two strikes because one
- 10:52Speaker 4: thing about Blake Snow you have to understand he never
- 10:54Speaker 4: gives in. He just knows at some point someone's going
- 10:57Speaker 4: to swing it a slider in the dirt or a
- 10:58Speaker 4: curveball or change up or something get themselves out.
- 11:01Speaker 3: So he never ever gives in. He never just says like.
- 11:04Speaker 4: Oh it's three to one, I'm just gonna throw a
- 11:06Speaker 4: heater down the middle, like he's like, Oh, I'm gonna
- 11:08Speaker 4: throw try and now if I walk you, I'll just
- 11:10Speaker 4: punch out the next guy. Like that's how Blake still thinks.
- 11:13Speaker 4: And that's if you watch him pitch. That's why he's
- 11:15Speaker 4: gotten better at it. But that's why his pitchcown he
- 11:16Speaker 4: used to run up so fast, was because he never
- 11:19Speaker 4: gave in.
- 11:20Speaker 1: So do you need to take more against him? Even
- 11:22Speaker 1: if you're an aggressive team.
- 11:23Speaker 4: Like that's the thin line because then you could behind
- 11:26Speaker 4: ohing two right right, So if you take more. It
- 11:29Speaker 4: was always like, oh, let's get this guy's pitch count up.
- 11:31Speaker 4: Oh okay, but then we're zing too and we're punching
- 11:34Speaker 4: out ten times, twelve times and six innings, Like is
- 11:37Speaker 4: that better? Or what if we go up there and
- 11:38Speaker 4: look for first good one and take a swing at it.
- 11:41Speaker 4: That's what the Blue Jays did. But he was kind
- 11:42Speaker 4: of all over the place in the first game. Maybe
- 11:44Speaker 4: he'll be more settled as Dodger Stadium it's a second
- 11:46Speaker 4: World Series start this time around, Maybe he'll be a
- 11:49Speaker 4: little more settle. Plus he's gone good bad, good bad,
- 11:50Speaker 4: good bad a little bit kind of like the way
- 11:52Speaker 4: Beaver did, so I think he'll be better, but it's
- 11:56Speaker 4: I mean, he's he's good.
- 11:57Speaker 3: I don't want to if.
- 11:58Speaker 4: I'm especially if I'm hitting off him, don't I want
- 12:00Speaker 4: my three swings. I don't want to go up there
- 12:02Speaker 4: and be like, oh god, I gotta take one. Oh
- 12:04Speaker 4: now I'm one crap, Yeah, get him out in front.
- 12:08Speaker 4: If I was facing Jamie Moyer and we went into
- 12:10Speaker 4: that with his seventy and I'm like, I can put
- 12:12Speaker 4: this ball in play more than likely, then I get
- 12:14Speaker 4: it right. But not against the guy that can punch
- 12:16Speaker 4: you out on three pitches. I want my three swings.
- 12:19Speaker 2: He doesn't like to give in. So then if it's
- 12:21Speaker 2: three to two, is it in your head that this
- 12:24Speaker 2: is a guy that often won't give in, and there's
- 12:27Speaker 2: a decent chance, maybe more so than most pitchers that
- 12:29Speaker 2: you face, that he's just going to bury something in
- 12:31Speaker 2: the dirt, even on three to two crafts and try
- 12:33Speaker 2: to get you to chase.
- 12:35Speaker 6: No, no, no, I mean not giving in just means
- 12:39Speaker 6: he's confident in throwing all of his pitches. He can
- 12:41Speaker 6: throw them for strikes, but there's not just he doesn't
- 12:45Speaker 6: need to just throw it. Get me over and I
- 12:47Speaker 6: think we talked about it in Game one, and I
- 12:50Speaker 6: think the Blue Jays did a good job. Part of
- 12:51Speaker 6: being aggressive is you got to catch him out front.
- 12:54Speaker 6: Everything is going to be going on a downhill plane.
- 12:57Speaker 6: That slider has been nasty besides the last time out,
- 13:01Speaker 6: and even that heater up. You got to catch it
- 13:03Speaker 6: out front. You can't be like, ooh, I'm gonna wait,
- 13:06Speaker 6: wait and let this stuff get deep because by that
- 13:09Speaker 6: time the pitch is finished and you're and you're cooked.
- 13:12Speaker 6: So I think guys that catch pitchers out front will
- 13:16Speaker 6: have success, and that's where they got to stick to
- 13:19Speaker 6: that and part of that's being aggressive.
- 13:20Speaker 1: All right.
- 13:21Speaker 2: Before we get back to the TV crowd, here minute
- 13:23Speaker 2: and a half Shane Bieber this from Mitch mannon The Athletic.
- 13:26Speaker 2: Shane Bieber said it was Sureser who prompted his offering
- 13:30Speaker 2: to be available in that eighteen inning marathon. He said
- 13:33Speaker 2: in the eleventh or twelfth inning, Shuzer went to him
- 13:35Speaker 2: and goes, quote beeps, if it got squirrely, you could
- 13:38Speaker 2: tell the wheels returning, and he's like, can you.
- 13:40Speaker 3: Pitch veteran guy? He knew it wasn't gonna be him
- 13:44Speaker 3: because he pitched that game, so he's like, all right,
- 13:46Speaker 3: who do we got left? It's like lurking, he's looking
- 13:49Speaker 3: for anybody.
- 13:49Speaker 2: He's smart though, like beebes, can I interest you in
- 13:53Speaker 2: pitching in this game?
- 13:55Speaker 1: But hey, that's what a veteran.
- 13:57Speaker 3: That's a veterans are supposed to do.
- 13:58Speaker 2: Or when you sign a guy and you're like, hey,
- 14:00Speaker 2: this guy is worth more than just what you're getting.
- 14:03Speaker 4: Teams don't understand that. They're like, oh, we got we
- 14:07Speaker 4: can sign this. We can sign this veteran for two million,
- 14:09Speaker 4: or we can sign this rookie guy, bring him up
- 14:12Speaker 4: for seven to fifty. The experience, excuse me. The experience
- 14:16Speaker 4: is what teams used to do. And he used to
- 14:18Speaker 4: use these guys for I remember when I first came up,
- 14:20Speaker 4: we had Ron Koomer, Terry Steinbag, Brent Gates, Denny Hawking
- 14:25Speaker 4: was a guy that was around for a while.
- 14:26Speaker 3: Like these are the guys who sat down Tom Prince.
- 14:28Speaker 4: He sat down and talked to him for a long time,
- 14:31Speaker 4: and you would talk baseball with him, and they would
- 14:33Speaker 4: teach you things, and they would explain things how life.
- 14:35Speaker 3: Works and how the game works.
- 14:37Speaker 4: And now those guys are kind of going away and
- 14:39Speaker 4: I'm not talking about superstar players. I'm just talking about
- 14:41Speaker 4: veteran guys that knew and understood how it worked.
- 14:45Speaker 2: Also, it doesn't work, bieb said Bullpen later in the series.
- 14:52Speaker 2: He's like, of course, world Series, said Scoop Time with
- 15:00Speaker 2: Ken Rosenthal from Los Angeles.
- 15:03Speaker 1: Ken, good to see you.
- 15:04Speaker 2: I'll start a big picture and then we'll focus on
- 15:05Speaker 2: a couple more detailed topics. So the column you put
- 15:08Speaker 2: out this morning is titled as World Series pressure Titans
- 15:11Speaker 2: Resilient Blue Jays insist on keeping things loose. Just from
- 15:15Speaker 2: judging that article by its cover, doesn't every team try
- 15:19Speaker 2: to keep the World Series vibes loose? Or do you
- 15:21Speaker 2: really feel something different with this team because you've covered
- 15:24Speaker 2: a ton of these.
- 15:26Speaker 5: Both and I addressed this in the article.
- 15:28Speaker 7: Great teams always talk about how resilient they are, how
- 15:31Speaker 7: they overcome.
- 15:32Speaker 5: The odds, how people are against them, all this stuff.
- 15:35Speaker 7: But the Blue Jays have demonstrated this time and again
- 15:38Speaker 7: this season. And as I wrote and I said last
- 15:41Speaker 7: night of the broadcast, too led the Majors in comeback
- 15:45Speaker 7: wins during the regular season. In the ALCS, they're down
- 15:49Speaker 7: two to zero after losing the first two games at home,
- 15:51Speaker 7: they're down three to two after a crushing loss in
- 15:54Speaker 7: Game five.
- 15:54Speaker 5: Win that.
- 15:55Speaker 7: So what they did in this game last night, without
- 15:59Speaker 7: George Springer, with a pitching matchup seemingly favored favoring the Dodgers,
- 16:04Speaker 7: what they did was in character. And yes, all teams
- 16:08Speaker 7: like this do have a certain resilience, and we know
- 16:10Speaker 7: that this team though to me and having been around
- 16:14Speaker 7: them now.
- 16:14Speaker 5: For a few weeks, it's a special quality.
- 16:17Speaker 7: And I can't say it's more special than any other
- 16:20Speaker 7: World Series champion, a World Series team, but it sort
- 16:24Speaker 7: of defines them and they talk about it a lot.
- 16:28Speaker 4: Ken, at what point are you media folks that are
- 16:30Speaker 4: just rooting for the Dodgers? Are we gonna stop being surprised?
- 16:34Speaker 4: Are you guys gonna stop being surprised by what the
- 16:36Speaker 4: Blue Jays are doing? Because you know the Yankees. Oh,
- 16:39Speaker 4: they're gonna lose to the Yankees at some point. Oh
- 16:41Speaker 4: they're down to the Mariners, they lose the first two games. Oh,
- 16:44Speaker 4: the Dodgers, like you said many times, are just gonna
- 16:47Speaker 4: squash them like little bugs. Ken, at what point do
- 16:50Speaker 4: you media folks stop being surprised by what the Blue
- 16:53Speaker 4: Jays are doing?
- 16:54Speaker 3: And how good.
- 16:55Speaker 5: First of all, First of all, I never said that.
- 16:58Speaker 5: I don't care who is.
- 17:00Speaker 7: Of all, AJ don't play the U media folks game
- 17:03Speaker 7: when you are now in the media. Now what you're saying, though,
- 17:07Speaker 7: there is a certain validity to it, not just among
- 17:09Speaker 7: the media but among fans. The expectation is that the
- 17:13Speaker 7: Dodgers were going to be favored in this series, and
- 17:16Speaker 7: they were, and that they probably would win in five
- 17:19Speaker 7: or six games, which they still could do at least
- 17:22Speaker 7: six games. The perception was that way because of the
- 17:25Speaker 7: defending World Series champions. They've had an interesting kind of year,
- 17:29Speaker 7: but they got hot at.
- 17:29Speaker 5: The right time.
- 17:31Speaker 7: Now what has happened is the Blue Jays have gotten
- 17:33Speaker 7: hot at the right time too, and the Dodgers, while
- 17:36Speaker 7: they're pitching has been outstanding starting pitching, their offense has
- 17:41Speaker 7: sagged and their bullpen remains a question.
- 17:43Speaker 5: So this series, in my mind, was never going to
- 17:47Speaker 5: be a route. I thought it would go six, and
- 17:49Speaker 5: I thought the Dodgers would win.
- 17:51Speaker 7: Now I'm not so sure, to be perfectly honest, because
- 17:53Speaker 7: what we have is a best of three, with two
- 17:56Speaker 7: of the games potentially in Toronto.
- 17:59Speaker 6: Does this become a win for the Blue Jays because
- 18:02Speaker 6: there's been there's been. You can see a little cracks
- 18:05Speaker 6: in the armor when you look at like, Okay Snell,
- 18:07Speaker 6: they got to Snell and show hey wasn't awesome glass.
- 18:11Speaker 6: Snell can have his things, but Yamamoto, nobody's cracked Yamamoto.
- 18:16Speaker 6: So does this become a must win for the Blue
- 18:19Speaker 6: Jays because of how good Yamamoto has been?
- 18:22Speaker 7: You can look at it one of two ways, Eric,
- 18:24Speaker 7: and certainly the way you just described.
- 18:26Speaker 5: You've got Yamamoto in game six.
- 18:27Speaker 7: He's coming off back to back complete games, brilliant performances.
- 18:31Speaker 5: You gotta win tonight.
- 18:32Speaker 7: But to go back to the original question that Scott asked,
- 18:37Speaker 7: if they got down three to two in the Alcs end,
- 18:41Speaker 7: they lost that game in crushing fashion. They were up
- 18:43Speaker 7: in the eighth inning, cal Raley hit the home run
- 18:46Speaker 7: and then Suarez.
- 18:47Speaker 5: We know what happened. And yet they go back home
- 18:49Speaker 5: and they win.
- 18:51Speaker 7: They go back to Toronto, and who knows what might
- 18:54Speaker 7: happen in game six.
- 18:55Speaker 5: Granted, Yamamoto was brilliant.
- 18:57Speaker 7: In Game two, and that's going to be something in
- 18:59Speaker 7: their minds a third time. I would seem to think
- 19:02Speaker 7: that he can, but I don't know Eric that anything
- 19:06Speaker 7: we've seen this postseason, even in the regular season, has
- 19:09Speaker 7: gone according to what we necessarily expected. And if this
- 19:13Speaker 7: series has one or two more surprises, that wouldn't surprise
- 19:16Speaker 7: me either. It would be nice for Toronto and they're
- 19:19Speaker 7: pursued here to win tonight. Obviously, with Yamamoto in Game six,
- 19:23Speaker 7: I don't think it's a must win.
- 19:25Speaker 4: I would think it's more of a must win for
- 19:27Speaker 4: the Dodgers with Snell going as good as Snell was.
- 19:30Speaker 4: I know he wasn't great in Game one, but to me,
- 19:32Speaker 4: this is a bit because you don't want to have
- 19:33Speaker 4: to go back.
- 19:34Speaker 3: To Toronto and have to win two games.
- 19:36Speaker 4: Everyone has kind of figured out that Toronto's a really
- 19:38Speaker 4: hard place to play when the Blue Jays are good.
- 19:40Speaker 4: You saw the watch party last night. There was I
- 19:42Speaker 4: don't know how many people were in the Rogers Center
- 19:45Speaker 4: slash SkyDome cheering and going crazy. Imagine if it comes
- 19:48Speaker 4: back for Game six and seven and everything's on the line,
- 19:51Speaker 4: that place is gonna forget the whole place.
- 19:53Speaker 3: All country's gonna be going insane.
- 19:55Speaker 7: That's true, and it's a good point because the Dodgers
- 19:59Speaker 7: again tonight seemingly have the pitching matchup in their favor, Snell,
- 20:04Speaker 7: you would think would be better.
- 20:05Speaker 5: He said fastball command was the issue in his last start.
- 20:08Speaker 7: He wasn't good by his estimation in that performance, and
- 20:12Speaker 7: with the Blue Jays it's the Savage for the second
- 20:14Speaker 7: straight start on four days rest. As Velo was down
- 20:17Speaker 7: about a mile per hour on four days rest, which.
- 20:20Speaker 5: He hasn't done a lot in his previous start.
- 20:22Speaker 7: In Game one, so you would think that, yes, this
- 20:26Speaker 7: is a game the Dodgers should win. But you probably
- 20:29Speaker 7: would have thought that last night, especially without Springer. I
- 20:31Speaker 7: wouldn't expect Springer to play tonight either, But this will
- 20:35Speaker 7: be interesting tonight because again the Dodgers' offense, and I
- 20:40Speaker 7: expect a lineup change. Pa Haes will probably be out
- 20:43Speaker 7: of there tonight. The Dodgers' offense, except when Otani is
- 20:47Speaker 7: rolling and maybe Freeman is doing some things, they're not
- 20:50Speaker 7: doing a whole lot, and that's a problem pa Haes.
- 20:54Speaker 6: You just mentioned pa Haes being out. Is it just
- 20:57Speaker 6: a simple Alex call because that's who's come off the
- 21:00Speaker 6: bench the most. Or is there something where we asked
- 21:03Speaker 6: Tommy Edmund to go to center field? Is it Kim
- 21:07Speaker 6: in there? Miguel Rojas or is it just an easy swap.
- 21:11Speaker 6: You think it's just an easy swap of Call, that
- 21:15Speaker 6: would be my expectation.
- 21:16Speaker 7: Then it would be Call with Kik moving to center.
- 21:19Speaker 7: Tommy Edmund has had that ankle issue. He hasn't played
- 21:21Speaker 7: the outfield in a long time, even taken fly balls
- 21:25Speaker 7: in quite some time, so.
- 21:26Speaker 5: I wouldn't expect it to be Edmund.
- 21:29Speaker 7: There is a way if you put Edmund out there,
- 21:32Speaker 7: that's how you get Rojas into the infield. But I
- 21:34Speaker 7: just don't see that coming. What I see is Call
- 21:37Speaker 7: in left and keyk in center. It's not ideal defensively,
- 21:42Speaker 7: and that's why Dave Roberts has resisted doing it, because
- 21:45Speaker 7: this is a team right now built on its pitching.
- 21:48Speaker 7: But Pie Is I believe it's four for fifty right
- 21:52Speaker 7: now in the postseason. It's not good enough, and the
- 21:55Speaker 7: bats are largely empty. They are seemingly on the verge
- 22:00Speaker 7: of a change here.
- 22:03Speaker 3: They have to make this change.
- 22:04Speaker 4: Ken, Do you think that they have to make this
- 22:05Speaker 4: change because it's not like call Is. I mean, I
- 22:08Speaker 4: know Calls a kind of a left handed specialist. Is
- 22:10Speaker 4: this just making a change to make a change? Why
- 22:12Speaker 4: not Kim at second base and try Edmund in the outfield.
- 22:17Speaker 3: Why not?
- 22:18Speaker 4: I don't know, try something completely different. Like I feel
- 22:21Speaker 4: like if you throw Kim out there, maybe it's a
- 22:22Speaker 4: different dynamic. It's a guy that puts them all playing,
- 22:24Speaker 4: can run and might put some pressure on the Blue Jays.
- 22:27Speaker 4: But Bets hasn't. I mean, you guys showed it on
- 22:29Speaker 4: the post game last night. Bets is not well, Kyk
- 22:33Speaker 4: is not well.
- 22:34Speaker 1: Pa Hayes.
- 22:34Speaker 3: Obviously we know those struggles, but there's.
- 22:37Speaker 4: Not it's really show Hey and Freddy once he hasn't
- 22:40Speaker 4: done much right, it's really show Hey and Freddy if
- 22:42Speaker 4: they don't hit. But I mean you go back to
- 22:46Speaker 4: the extra innings. Freddy's really the only one that did anything.
- 22:48Speaker 4: They walked show Hey every time, clearly, but it's been
- 22:50Speaker 4: show Hey and Freddy and the rest of the lineup
- 22:52Speaker 4: is has been kind of like, ah, we're just.
- 22:54Speaker 3: Going through them.
- 22:55Speaker 4: Not they're going through the motions, but we're just like
- 22:57Speaker 4: they're nothing, no damage, no anything.
- 22:59Speaker 7: Really, Aja, you're right, And the question with Edmund versus
- 23:04Speaker 7: Kim or with Kim, if Edmund can't do it physically
- 23:08Speaker 7: in center field, then it's not a question, No Rojas. No, Kim,
- 23:11Speaker 7: you can't move Edmund off of the infield, so you
- 23:14Speaker 7: ask if they have.
- 23:15Speaker 1: To do it.
- 23:15Speaker 5: No, they don't have to do it, and you can
- 23:17Speaker 5: keep your defense intact.
- 23:18Speaker 7: But essentially you've got a dead spot right now in
- 23:20Speaker 7: front of Otani and the way they are playing.
- 23:26Speaker 5: In my view, they need a jolt.
- 23:29Speaker 7: I wouldn't even be surprised if Dave Roberts shook up
- 23:32Speaker 7: the order tonight because they need some kind of different look,
- 23:36Speaker 7: something to change the energy of that offense. And obviously
- 23:40Speaker 7: one good night would change everything, right, that's how the
- 23:43Speaker 7: postseason works. You look at it differently, but they really
- 23:46Speaker 7: haven't had a good night in a while. They're averaging
- 23:48Speaker 7: since the Division Series, I'm sorry, since the Wildcard round
- 23:51Speaker 7: three point seventy five runs per game.
- 23:53Speaker 5: That's not good enough.
- 23:54Speaker 7: Even though they keep winning because mostly they're pitching has
- 23:57Speaker 7: kept them going, they are not a team right now
- 24:00Speaker 7: that offensively is imposing it all.
- 24:04Speaker 2: Hey, if you want to take care of yourself, your
- 24:07Speaker 2: body and everything that goes into health, fitness and nutrition,
- 24:12Speaker 2: Superpower provides crats what I would call the pro experience
- 24:16Speaker 2: for the everyday person, one hundred.
- 24:19Speaker 6: Percent super easy. You get your lab test results back
- 24:22Speaker 6: and you can streamline exactly what you're deficient in. You
- 24:26Speaker 6: can say, Okay, this is what the results told me.
- 24:30Speaker 6: I'm going to go ahead and maybe look for that
- 24:32Speaker 6: in a supplement which they provide. I'm gonna go ahead
- 24:36Speaker 6: and look at that in my daily workouts, which they
- 24:39Speaker 6: give so many different ideas of how to make sure
- 24:43Speaker 6: your deficiencies become some of your superpowers.
- 24:46Speaker 2: Superpower used to cost four ndred ninety nine dollars. Head
- 24:49Speaker 2: to superpower dot com right now to learn more and
- 24:52Speaker 2: lock in the special one hundred and ninety nine.
- 24:54Speaker 1: Dollars price while it lasts.
- 24:55Speaker 2: After you sign up, they'll ask you how you heard
- 24:57Speaker 2: about them and make sure you mentioned ft your biology decoded,
- 25:01Speaker 2: your blueprint activated with Superpower?
- 25:06Speaker 6: Is there a chance Springer gets to that bat in
- 25:08Speaker 6: the rest of the World series? Because if not, is
- 25:11Speaker 6: the fear of him looming like, oh, he had his
- 25:13Speaker 6: uniform on, even with a with a shirt over top
- 25:16Speaker 6: of it, better than low perfeto being activated and then
- 25:21Speaker 6: they have more options off the bench.
- 25:25Speaker 7: They're knocking on my door here, guys, even with the
- 25:27Speaker 7: privacy sign on, I don't believe Springer will play again.
- 25:34Speaker 7: But they're holding out hope. And the way john Stein
- 25:41Speaker 7: had described it to me last night on this in
- 25:43Speaker 7: the in game interview was, Hey, he made progress today.
- 25:47Speaker 5: We think he may be a go tomorrow.
- 25:49Speaker 7: I don't know that that's true, and we'll see the
- 25:52Speaker 7: truth will come out in the lineup.
- 25:53Speaker 5: When we see the lineup. But he is a guy
- 25:56Speaker 5: that is really tough. We know that.
- 25:58Speaker 7: We also know that leaks are really tricky, and that's
- 26:01Speaker 7: what he's dealing with, or seemingly some kind of issue
- 26:03Speaker 7: in his side, and because of that, I just can't.
- 26:08Speaker 5: See him recovering that quickly.
- 26:10Speaker 7: The kneecap that was bad, right, and he came back
- 26:12Speaker 7: with only a day off between Games five and six
- 26:15Speaker 7: of the ALCS, But it's really hard to do when
- 26:18Speaker 7: you've got a side issue and he swings as violently
- 26:20Speaker 7: as he does, so I have a hard time believing
- 26:23Speaker 7: that he's going to play. And if he does, more
- 26:26Speaker 7: power to him. I remember David Popkins, the hitting coach,
- 26:29Speaker 7: saying in the ALCS after he got hit in Game five,
- 26:32Speaker 7: you're gonna have your Kirk Gibson moment. This would be
- 26:36Speaker 7: I don't know Kirk Gibson times too, because Springer already
- 26:39Speaker 7: had that moment in Game seven of the ALCS.
- 26:43Speaker 4: Ken By the way, the Blue Jays, I mean, I
- 26:46Speaker 4: know Springer has been great for him in the postseason,
- 26:48Speaker 4: but Boba schet stepped in and is doing a nice
- 26:50Speaker 4: job as the dch It's not like they didn't have
- 26:53Speaker 4: anybody to step in, and it actually kind of it
- 26:55Speaker 4: improved their defense and kept their offense similar to when
- 26:58Speaker 4: Baschette was out and they had so it's not like
- 27:01Speaker 4: it was the end of the world. And that's a
- 27:03Speaker 4: good thing for the Jays organization that they had the
- 27:06Speaker 4: depth to do that. Now we've talked about Snow, We've
- 27:09Speaker 4: talked about you Savage.
- 27:11Speaker 3: What about the bullpens.
- 27:12Speaker 4: I thought, you know, Dave Roberts threw a lot of
- 27:14Speaker 4: his guys out there other than Sazaki yesterday to try
- 27:17Speaker 4: to keep them in that game, whereas the Blue Jays
- 27:21Speaker 4: they used Bassett.
- 27:22Speaker 3: I mean, they use violin every day, so that doesn't
- 27:23Speaker 3: really count.
- 27:24Speaker 4: But you know who's more ready for this game five
- 27:28Speaker 4: on the third day. I feel like the Blue Jays
- 27:30Speaker 4: might be in a better spot bullpen wise, after the
- 27:32Speaker 4: eighteen inning game and then yesterday than the Dodgers because
- 27:35Speaker 4: the Dodgers did use a bunch of their guys up
- 27:38Speaker 4: yesterday to try to keep that game close.
- 27:41Speaker 5: Yeah, I'm still not in love with either bullpen.
- 27:43Speaker 7: Even after the at and any game, which was a
- 27:45Speaker 7: tremendous performance by both and you cannot take that away
- 27:48Speaker 7: from them. But you're right, Ajay, based on last night
- 27:52Speaker 7: and the way it went down. Yes, maybe the Dodgers
- 27:55Speaker 7: used some of their guys to an extent that they
- 27:58Speaker 7: weren't going to be comfortable with using them today. But
- 28:01Speaker 7: Bassett through two innings after one inning of the night before,
- 28:04Speaker 7: I believe, only twenty pitches. He is a guy that
- 28:08Speaker 7: has a rubber arm. He can pitch, so that's a
- 28:10Speaker 7: good sign for them. Flu Hardy, of course, was really
- 28:13Speaker 7: good last night, and they're gonna need him to be
- 28:15Speaker 7: really good because Brendan Little he's.
- 28:17Speaker 5: Given up two huge homers in the postseason now, so.
- 28:20Speaker 7: From the left side, it's really flu Hardy and Little,
- 28:22Speaker 7: and you don't want to use Little. And the other
- 28:24Speaker 7: one is Eric Louer, but he's more of a long guy.
- 28:26Speaker 7: And of course he threw four or two thirds innings
- 28:29Speaker 7: in the eighteen inning game.
- 28:30Speaker 5: So I'm not sure I would give either team the
- 28:33Speaker 5: edge with the bullpen, but.
- 28:36Speaker 7: The Blue Jays because of what they're doing right now
- 28:40Speaker 7: and Hoffman not being necessarily a big part of the
- 28:43Speaker 7: picture so far except a little bit.
- 28:46Speaker 5: Yes, they should be well positioned.
- 28:49Speaker 1: Ken, good stuff.
- 28:49Speaker 2: That was your call from the bullpen that you ignored,
- 28:52Speaker 2: so you can tell them to leave you alone.
- 28:54Speaker 1: You made your Ken?
- 28:55Speaker 3: What did you do?
- 28:56Speaker 4: I want to know what Ken did during the eighteen
- 28:58Speaker 4: inning game because, first of all, like I did a
- 29:00Speaker 4: proof of life check on Ken about the sixteenth inning
- 29:03Speaker 4: because I hadn't heard from him in so long, so
- 29:06Speaker 4: and I know I think Hazel May asked for pizza,
- 29:08Speaker 4: So did you have pizza sent down there?
- 29:10Speaker 3: What did you do during this eighteen inning game?
- 29:12Speaker 4: Because after about the sixth inning, Ken, you were non existent,
- 29:15Speaker 4: So I was just that's why I text you, Mike Ken,
- 29:17Speaker 4: are you alive down there?
- 29:19Speaker 7: First of all, everyone AJ Prizinski during the eighteen inning
- 29:22Speaker 7: game was being Aj Prazinski texting me like why aren't
- 29:25Speaker 7: you on the air?
- 29:26Speaker 5: Why No, that is not what I said.
- 29:28Speaker 3: Ken, I text you said, are you awake?
- 29:31Speaker 5: Is what you said? Are you awake?
- 29:33Speaker 7: I knew where you were going with it, and I'm
- 29:35Speaker 7: gonna hang up right now, Aj, I knew where you
- 29:37Speaker 7: would going with that, and you were being aj Prazinski
- 29:40Speaker 7: and I wasn't gonna play your little game.
- 29:42Speaker 5: Bye bye.
- 29:45Speaker 3: Can San have a great show tonight, buddy.
- 29:48Speaker 5: See guys, Thanks good stuff.
- 29:50Speaker 2: Ken Rosenthal on Fair Territory on Friday for the Fair
- 29:54Speaker 2: Territory super Fans playoff scheduling is different Friday before Game six.
- 30:01Speaker 2: You'll have Kenny Ball Game on there with Alana taking
- 30:04Speaker 2: your questions. Trey Savage has a superpower. It's called just
- 30:08Speaker 2: starting his postseason. So Sarah Lang said, this is going
- 30:12Speaker 2: to be his fifth postseason start. No other pitcher has
- 30:15Speaker 2: even made three postseason starts without his first within his
- 30:18Speaker 2: first eight overall appearances regular season in postseason. He's going
- 30:22Speaker 2: to be the first pitcher in MLB history to start
- 30:24Speaker 2: multiple World Series games within his first eight career appearances.
- 30:29Speaker 4: Awesome, and I think there was also he's this is
- 30:32Speaker 4: his fifth postseason start and that's more starts than he
- 30:35Speaker 4: made in Double A and a ball in Double.
- 30:36Speaker 3: A or something Triple A.
- 30:38Speaker 4: Something that's like some crazy style like I think he
- 30:40Speaker 4: pitched four times in Double A and this is.
- 30:42Speaker 2: His fifth postseason appearance and he's got it right. He's
- 30:44Speaker 2: got the stuff, he's got the moxie.
- 30:46Speaker 3: He understands how lucky he is too.
- 30:49Speaker 2: Like, let's just well, he doesn't sound like he's whatever
- 30:53Speaker 2: age he is, twenty two.
- 30:54Speaker 1: He sounds like he's like thirty two.
- 30:56Speaker 2: Like he sounds like he's got These are the guys you, Yeah,
- 30:59Speaker 2: I listened to the guy that scout, the scout that
- 31:01Speaker 2: signed him, like they they a lot of scouts think
- 31:04Speaker 2: they've got it.
- 31:04Speaker 8: Like they hurt though in college. I remember that's why
- 31:07Speaker 8: he dropped. Yeah, he was hurt in college, especially as
- 31:09Speaker 8: junior year. He was hurt because Velo was a little
- 31:12Speaker 8: down when he was a guy. M hm, Pennsylvania guys
- 31:18Speaker 8: have just built different. And he had six Triple I
- 31:21Speaker 8: starts and now he has eight and he has he
- 31:25Speaker 8: has five postseason.
- 31:26Speaker 1: Starts every day.
- 31:29Speaker 2: Louis has appeared in thirteen games this postseason Louis Island.
- 31:34Speaker 2: Only two pitchers have appeared in more postseason games twenty seventeen,
- 31:42Speaker 2: Brandon Morrow nineteen ninety seven, Paul.
- 31:49Speaker 3: Paul Austin Macker is I just don't know how to
- 31:51Speaker 3: pronounce lefty. Would you think it was acid maker? Austin Maker?
- 31:55Speaker 3: He was a lefty that threw like down here. He
- 31:56Speaker 3: was a reliever. He pitched forever. I think I faced
- 32:00Speaker 3: Paul Austin Marcher.
- 32:01Speaker 1: He pitched into the two thousands.
- 32:03Speaker 3: Dude pitched forever. He pitched. He was he was on
- 32:06Speaker 3: Indians teams. Uh. He was Gosh, he was like a lefty.
- 32:11Speaker 3: He was like he was like.
- 32:14Speaker 4: Jesse Rosco, like the lefty that every team had that
- 32:17Speaker 4: was like a side arm left He just came.
- 32:19Speaker 1: In fourteen seasons. Now he stopped to night.
- 32:21Speaker 3: Pitched in ninety nine. I think I faced him in
- 32:24Speaker 3: maybe ninety eight.
- 32:25Speaker 1: Right as you entered the league. You got the famous
- 32:27Speaker 1: Austen Macher.
- 32:29Speaker 4: Yeah, but it was like, oh, Paul Austin Marcher, I
- 32:30Speaker 4: get to face him. This is awesome because when I
- 32:32Speaker 4: I mean, he started in what year eighty six with
- 32:36Speaker 4: the Braves, and I was a Braves fan as a kid.
- 32:38Speaker 3: So of course I knew Paul Austin Macher.
- 32:42Speaker 1: A little bit.
- 32:42Speaker 6: He got better that year too. He got better in
- 32:45Speaker 6: the World Series that year because Brandon Morrow did not
- 32:50Speaker 6: Brandon Morrow was used, abused and got waffled. But Austin Maker, Shoot,
- 32:57Speaker 6: he pitched all those games and then he went to
- 32:58Speaker 6: the World Series. He had four innings, zero earned runs,
- 33:03Speaker 6: gave up five hits.
- 33:06Speaker 2: And you can listen to Can Tom Berducci, Kevin Burkhart,
- 33:11Speaker 2: yesterday's guest, Joe Davis, Today's guest, John Smoltz.
- 33:17Speaker 1: I think I got everything last week.
- 33:18Speaker 3: He was like on last week, or so wasn't he Smoltzy.
- 33:22Speaker 1: Smolts was last week? Yep.
- 33:24Speaker 3: Leading up to the World A Rod, Jeter and Poppy.
- 33:27Speaker 1: That's right.
- 33:29Speaker 3: I would talk to them.
- 33:29Speaker 1: What's his last name? The producer Macheska?
- 33:33Speaker 4: What a by the way, I know y'all don't care,
- 33:36Speaker 4: but I care. They did that piece in the pregame
- 33:38Speaker 4: on if you watch the pre game. But he's retiring
- 33:40Speaker 4: at the end of the World Series. This is twenty
- 33:42Speaker 4: second World Series from baseball.
- 33:43Speaker 3: He was from baseball. He's still doing football.
- 33:45Speaker 4: This is his twenty second World Series he's done. And
- 33:49Speaker 4: my first World Series that I did was twenty eleven.
- 33:51Speaker 4: So he's been with me for almost fifteen years now,
- 33:54Speaker 4: like when I was doing a pre and post and
- 33:55Speaker 4: I've known p and he does games with me in
- 33:57Speaker 4: the regular season. What a great guy and it was
- 33:59Speaker 4: all to see him do that piece on Pete yesterday
- 34:02Speaker 4: and I watched it and I text P and I go,
- 34:04Speaker 4: I almost cried Pete, and he text me back like,
- 34:07Speaker 4: of course that's a perfect response from you or something
- 34:09Speaker 4: almost Yeah, almost cried. So I mean he's he's awesome guy.
- 34:13Speaker 4: And I wish Pete the best. We're gonna miss him
- 34:15Speaker 4: baseball and enjoy semi retirement.
- 34:18Speaker 1: Pete.
- 34:19Speaker 2: Oh, they're really giving it to him on the way out.
- 34:20Speaker 2: He's gonna have at least six, if not seven games.
- 34:22Speaker 3: Oh no, I texted me. I said, the best part
- 34:24Speaker 3: is you get to go back to Toronto. And he's like, oh, Age,
- 34:28Speaker 3: you're so funny. You're so funny. He's got that straight
- 34:31Speaker 3: Jersey accent.
- 34:33Speaker 1: Your Jersey accent is interesting.
- 34:35Speaker 3: I don't have that.
- 34:36Speaker 2: Almost as good as crats as Canadian accent. Fox won
- 34:39Speaker 2: try it seven days for free. You know we're talking
- 34:42Speaker 2: about it the entire month because it's brand new. Click
- 34:45Speaker 2: that QR code on your screen right now, support ft
- 34:49Speaker 2: you track that link to see who likes us. Wow
- 34:58Speaker 2: in the weeds looking fre I love it. Let's talk
- 35:02Speaker 2: Vladdie Junior versus Vlattie Senior, his Hall of Fame father
- 35:07Speaker 2: Jason Stark writing a column about the differences between the
- 35:11Speaker 2: two in the postseason, and the little guy's got a beat
- 35:15Speaker 2: right now.
- 35:16Speaker 4: So I played against his dad in the postseason, okay,
- 35:19Speaker 4: in two thousand and five.
- 35:20Speaker 2: And here's the breakdown, right, Vlad Senior one hundred and
- 35:25Speaker 2: eighty eight played appearances in the postseason, nine extra base hits.
- 35:30Speaker 2: Vlad Junior has ten extra base hits in this postseason alone.
- 35:36Speaker 2: He's beaten daddy O fifteen games into October. Vladdie junior
- 35:41Speaker 2: slash line is four to nineteen, batting five hundred on
- 35:45Speaker 2: base eight oh six, slugging a thirteen to oh six ops.
- 35:50Speaker 4: He's having an all time postseason, all time. He's having
- 35:53Speaker 4: an all time postseason. So yeah, that nobody can are they?
- 35:57Speaker 4: Anybody could keep up with that. He's having an all
- 35:59Speaker 4: time postseason. So his dad is in the Hall of
- 36:01Speaker 4: Fame and Vlad Junior is on the track to be
- 36:03Speaker 4: in the Hall of fame. But yeah, he's having an
- 36:06Speaker 4: all time postseason and he's already too a place where
- 36:08Speaker 4: his dad never got.
- 36:10Speaker 2: I mean, he said, nobody has put a slash line
- 36:13Speaker 2: together like that, And he said, even if we lower
- 36:15Speaker 2: the minimum to twelve games played, there's only two other
- 36:18Speaker 2: names on the four hundred, five hundred eight hundred Slash
- 36:21Speaker 2: Line Club two thousand and four, Carlos Beltron with the
- 36:25Speaker 2: Astros in nineteen ninety three, Paul Malider.
- 36:28Speaker 3: With the Mali My god, Mallie.
- 36:31Speaker 1: That's it.
- 36:31Speaker 2: So okay, I'm going to use this example just because
- 36:35Speaker 2: it's a recent one and it will probably piss some
- 36:37Speaker 2: people off.
- 36:38Speaker 1: Crats.
- 36:38Speaker 2: But when Yankee fans say, get disappointed about a judge performance,
- 36:44Speaker 2: and I know it was better this year, right, but
- 36:46Speaker 2: it was a small sample size, obviously, they're looking at
- 36:50Speaker 2: Vlad Junior being like, can he do that in the postseason.
- 36:55Speaker 2: I mean, nobody has really done that as we're talking about,
- 36:57Speaker 2: but this is a superstar bat who is elevating in
- 37:01Speaker 2: the postseason.
- 37:04Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 37:05Speaker 6: I mean, I think his his hit tool, I think
- 37:08Speaker 6: goes underrated. I think his ability to hit because if
- 37:12Speaker 6: he hits close to three hundred, then they're like, well,
- 37:15Speaker 6: where's the power. Then he hits for power, They're like, well,
- 37:19Speaker 6: is he sacrificing average? I think his You forget how young,
- 37:23Speaker 6: how young he still is. You forget how fast his
- 37:27Speaker 6: bat speed is. You forget how good his zone discipline is.
- 37:31Speaker 6: I think he's been a one to one guy his
- 37:33Speaker 6: entire career, I had this one walk to every one
- 37:37Speaker 6: strikeout Like that stuff's unheard of, and now you're seeing
- 37:40Speaker 6: it on this on the biggest stage. My favorite part
- 37:43Speaker 6: before the World Series was he had more home runs
- 37:46Speaker 6: than he had swings and misses. Can that be taught
- 37:50Speaker 6: probably to not that, not to that level, but he's
- 37:52Speaker 6: already an elite player that's taking his game to another
- 37:56Speaker 6: level in the postseason. That's like, it's unheard of and
- 38:00Speaker 6: that's why he's having a record setting postseason.
- 38:04Speaker 2: Do you know that hit tool grade that Baseball America
- 38:07Speaker 2: gave him back in the day as a prospect eighty
- 38:11Speaker 2: eighty And they never give out eighties. We can ask
- 38:13Speaker 2: on our show on Monday Day JJ, but they never
- 38:16Speaker 2: give out eighties, like.
- 38:19Speaker 1: Because he did.
- 38:21Speaker 3: Because they never give him out.
- 38:23Speaker 2: I mean, nobody gets eighties. I know there's sixties, some seventies,
- 38:28Speaker 2: even seventies are tough. Eighties is like, whoa, this is
- 38:33Speaker 2: something different and he's proving to be something different.
- 38:38Speaker 6: You don't they don't give out eighties. Like It's like
- 38:41Speaker 6: when you hear a guy that's like a sixty five,
- 38:43Speaker 6: you'd be like, whoa seventy. He's going to be a
- 38:46Speaker 6: perennial All Star type of player. And to get an
- 38:50Speaker 6: eighty that early in like, it was pretty I heard
- 38:55Speaker 6: a lot about him because my roommate manager of the
- 38:57Speaker 6: Blue Jays, had him coming up through through the minor
- 39:00Speaker 6: leagues and he's like, there's some special dudes.
- 39:04Speaker 3: He said, this guy is extra special. He's right, and
- 39:09Speaker 3: Bashett's not far behind him when he's healthy.
- 39:13Speaker 2: Tool wise, Yeah, yeah, it's up there. But you're seeing it.
- 39:17Speaker 2: I mean, this is.
- 39:20Speaker 4: So for all the grief that we've given Blue Jays,
- 39:23Speaker 4: well not all of us, but you guys.
- 39:25Speaker 3: For what you know, not being not living up to
- 39:28Speaker 3: the expectations, that actually is true.
- 39:30Speaker 2: Up until this year, they did not live up to
- 39:32Speaker 2: expect that. I didn't say that a lot of people
- 39:34Speaker 2: had World Series picks in prior years.
- 39:36Speaker 1: They just picked the wrong year.
- 39:38Speaker 4: So but they're living up to it now. They are,
- 39:40Speaker 4: and they got a chance to win the World Series.
- 39:42Speaker 4: So all those people that said when Baschette and Flat
- 39:44Speaker 4: get here, Junior, we're going to have a chance to
- 39:47Speaker 4: make a run, well, boom here they are. Sad part
- 39:49Speaker 4: is might be gone next year, but at least they
- 39:52Speaker 4: have flat for thirteen more years, fourteen more years.
- 39:54Speaker 3: If he's doing it.
- 39:55Speaker 2: Yeah, if they want bow, they can keep up. Yes,
- 39:58Speaker 2: I agree, especially given the year that they're having right now.
- 40:01Speaker 3: I agree.
- 40:02Speaker 4: The Giants did that, though, and you kind of let
- 40:05Speaker 4: them down the wrong path. They kept some guys after
- 40:07Speaker 4: winning World Series. They might not have should have because
- 40:11Speaker 4: of the World Series. But listen, Bo's young, and Bo
- 40:13Speaker 4: can hit and bose shortstop and all those things, so
- 40:17Speaker 4: I wouldn't be mad at all they kept Bo. I
- 40:19Speaker 4: was a Blue Jays fan.
- 40:20Speaker 2: I love it, and and to me, yeah, if you
- 40:24Speaker 2: want to keep your core and the young guys, vladim
- 40:26Speaker 2: Bo is the answer. They already handled Flad. One other
- 40:30Speaker 2: quick note about the Jason Stark article. He said, the
- 40:33Speaker 2: World Series matchup between Otani and Blad most expensive matchup
- 40:37Speaker 2: in the World Series.
- 40:37Speaker 3: One point two billion.
- 40:39Speaker 2: Yeah, but really technically less with the deferred money net
- 40:44Speaker 2: prison value. But still it's about a billion dollar matchup between.
- 40:48Speaker 6: I saw Otani and I saw a stat Vlad has
- 40:53Speaker 6: two homers off of Cheatani, Shelletani has zero off of Lad.
- 40:59Speaker 3: So point Lad true two points.
- 41:06Speaker 4: Actually actually yesterday was two points a game in the lead,
- 41:09Speaker 4: so maybe three points. I don't know what the other
- 41:11Speaker 4: homer was, if it was a solo or not.
- 41:13Speaker 3: Yep, they're saying.
- 41:16Speaker 2: Lad is probably the last position player on their list
- 41:19Speaker 2: that would be pitching in a game, maybe after Bow
- 41:23Speaker 2: and Springer because they're banged up.
- 41:24Speaker 1: But then flads all the way down there.
- 41:26Speaker 3: Maybe Kirk. I think Kirk might be.
- 41:28Speaker 1: Kirk's pretty far down there as well. He's got to
- 41:30Speaker 1: catch here.
- 41:31Speaker 3: He is.
- 41:31Speaker 2: Joe Davis calling the World Series on Fox. Joe, great
- 41:36Speaker 2: to have you on, man, Appreciate the time and no
- 41:37Speaker 2: busy times. And how has your sleep been going the
- 41:42Speaker 2: last few days?
- 41:43Speaker 1: My friend?
- 41:45Speaker 9: Better last night, I guess than two nights ago. I
- 41:47Speaker 9: had no choice but to get a quick one a
- 41:49Speaker 9: couple of nights ago. So caught up a little last night.
- 41:53Speaker 3: Okay, you know KB yesterday, now Joe today?
- 41:58Speaker 4: You know these these these these lead play by play
- 42:01Speaker 4: guys for Fox or just such divas.
- 42:03Speaker 3: Man, It's like, I mean, it's crazy.
- 42:06Speaker 4: You know, one guy does the Super Bowl, one guy
- 42:08Speaker 4: does the World Series, and oh I couldn't get my
- 42:10Speaker 4: beauty sleep. I'm gonna have to have extra makeup today.
- 42:14Speaker 9: Yeah, those bags, look at those things.
- 42:21Speaker 1: Ask them, ask them about the meals.
- 42:23Speaker 4: Oh, by the way, by the way, we've done a
- 42:26Speaker 4: lot of games together. Five o'clock, you stop eating. I've
- 42:29Speaker 4: seen you eat it like six ish o' clock in
- 42:31Speaker 4: New York and some other places.
- 42:33Speaker 3: So like is it only five? Is it five Pacific?
- 42:37Speaker 3: Or is it only five?
- 42:39Speaker 9: Is it's five in a controlled environment. But if I'm
- 42:43Speaker 9: dining with if I have the chance to dine with you,
- 42:46Speaker 9: I'll push that back to like six o five for sure.
- 42:50Speaker 4: But here's the thing, Like I'll bring in all the
- 42:52Speaker 4: junk food, Like I bring in pizzas and whatever they have.
- 42:55Speaker 4: You guys have all seen, like I bring in anything
- 42:57Speaker 4: that they can get. Like usually Jen or or who
- 43:00Speaker 4: that's doing Eric, whoever's doing the ops, will send me
- 43:02Speaker 4: like bringing everything. Joe never touches it, like the turkey
- 43:06Speaker 4: the other day, Like Joe, you took a bite out
- 43:07Speaker 4: of the I think you actually did take a bite
- 43:09Speaker 4: out of the turkey.
- 43:10Speaker 1: But like not only chocolate cake.
- 43:16Speaker 4: A little different, but every time you bring in like
- 43:19Speaker 4: you have your own salad, you have your little jar, peanuts,
- 43:21Speaker 4: you have this and that, Like look you're drinking out
- 43:23Speaker 4: of your fancy water bottle. Meanwhile, I got my plastic
- 43:26Speaker 4: water bottle here. You know, it's just we're just built.
- 43:28Speaker 1: Different definitely alkaline.
- 43:30Speaker 3: Oh oh yeah, yeah, of course, of course.
- 43:33Speaker 4: But like it's it's just amazing when you you know,
- 43:35Speaker 4: you start you see you start seeing people for you know,
- 43:38Speaker 4: different things, especially in eighteen innings, and they start talking
- 43:40Speaker 4: about things that aren't the game, which we're gonna get to.
- 43:43Speaker 4: But like you you know, you start hearing about five
- 43:45Speaker 4: o'clock dinners and I don't know, Joe, I just think
- 43:47Speaker 4: you've changed now because you've.
- 43:48Speaker 3: Done too many world series.
- 43:51Speaker 9: Yeah, I'm sorry to Yeah, I'm sorry to let you
- 43:53Speaker 9: down a j go.
- 43:56Speaker 1: A good feeling, Joe.
- 43:58Speaker 2: I have one more broadcast question then we'll get into
- 44:00Speaker 2: the series. I called games in my heyday, and I'm wondering,
- 44:05Speaker 2: do you ever get concerned when there's so much action
- 44:07Speaker 2: going on in a game that you're going to miss
- 44:10Speaker 2: getting to a call?
- 44:11Speaker 5: Right?
- 44:12Speaker 2: I used to call games for our YouTube Game of
- 44:14Speaker 2: the Week, and we had so much action going on,
- 44:16Speaker 2: and we did a great job of making sure we
- 44:18Speaker 2: got back to the call. But sometimes like something happens, right,
- 44:21Speaker 2: you brought the umpire on the other day and you're
- 44:23Speaker 2: trying to get that explanation, which is great, but then
- 44:26Speaker 2: nowadays with the pitchclock, you're getting right back to the
- 44:28Speaker 2: pitch clock. There's just like a even with the turkey,
- 44:30Speaker 2: right Like I've been there, dude, You're doing something in
- 44:33Speaker 2: the booth and it's fun and it's good, but you're
- 44:35Speaker 2: also like, I need to be paying attention because this
- 44:38Speaker 2: could be someone's biggest home run I've ever.
- 44:41Speaker 9: Yeah, it was funny when we had Mark Carlson on
- 44:44Speaker 9: the other day to go over the play at the plate.
- 44:47Speaker 9: Will Smith was up. This was I don't know, like
- 44:49Speaker 9: thirteenth inning at that point or something, and I've watched
- 44:51Speaker 9: Will Smith at five walk off home runs in the
- 44:54Speaker 9: last five years and Mark's still going. I was like,
- 44:57Speaker 9: oh my god, oh my god, oh my god, this
- 44:59Speaker 9: World Series game is about to end. While Mark's talking
- 45:01Speaker 9: God bless him, like no fault of his own. It's
- 45:04Speaker 9: just to your point, Scott, there is a lot of
- 45:06Speaker 9: extra stuff in these games, and I just I trust
- 45:09Speaker 9: Pete macchescar producer in our truck that we're going to
- 45:13Speaker 9: make sure we're out of the way ninety nine percent
- 45:15Speaker 9: of the time. It's just that was a unique one
- 45:17Speaker 9: right there.
- 45:17Speaker 3: For sure.
- 45:18Speaker 9: It was like, we cannot miss this and this guy
- 45:20Speaker 9: could do it on this next pitch.
- 45:23Speaker 3: Joe, first of all, a great job beyond the thing
- 45:25Speaker 3: that you guys did for Pete. Yesterday.
- 45:27Speaker 4: I text Pete and said it almost made me cry.
- 45:29Speaker 4: Of which part Pete was like, that was the perfect response,
- 45:31Speaker 4: but it was. It was a great job what you
- 45:33Speaker 4: guys did for Pete. But I always wondered this, and
- 45:36Speaker 4: I've never asked to play by play guy this. How
- 45:37Speaker 4: much do you pre plan your calls or how much
- 45:39Speaker 4: do you just do they just come to you right
- 45:41Speaker 4: like the Freddie meet Gibby thing last year and then
- 45:44Speaker 4: to walk off again for Freddy. How much is this
- 45:46Speaker 4: already in your head if this happens, or is it
- 45:48Speaker 4: just straight off the cuff.
- 45:51Speaker 9: I think it's somewhere in between. I never want to
- 45:53Speaker 9: be scripted because I think it's going to sound scripted.
- 45:55Speaker 9: But I'm always trying to lean forward and anticipate something
- 45:58Speaker 9: big happening, so so then when it does happen, it's
- 46:01Speaker 9: not just okay, home run?
- 46:03Speaker 1: What does this mean?
- 46:04Speaker 9: Like I can't figure that out in the moment. I'm
- 46:06Speaker 9: not smart enough to figure out right there in the moment.
- 46:09Speaker 9: The appropriate context for the call, and I think that's
- 46:12Speaker 9: what it requires this time. Here is a caption that
- 46:14Speaker 9: can really make it stand the test of time and
- 46:17Speaker 9: that people can go back and watch that clip fifty
- 46:19Speaker 9: years from now and know that it was more than
- 46:21Speaker 9: just home run, like what did the moment mean? And
- 46:24Speaker 9: for me to do that, I'm always thinking about, you know,
- 46:28Speaker 9: the context around the game, around the inning, around the
- 46:30Speaker 9: at bat, and then hopefully the right thing out of
- 46:33Speaker 9: that thinking comes out as opposed to scripting it.
- 46:37Speaker 1: Okay, so now let's get to biz here.
- 46:40Speaker 2: I mean, you watch plenty of Dodgers baseball during the
- 46:42Speaker 2: regular season. Two what are you seeing right now from
- 46:46Speaker 2: some of their bats that are slumping? It obviously gets
- 46:49Speaker 2: magnified in a series like this. And do you think
- 46:52Speaker 2: that they will make a change?
- 46:54Speaker 1: And why.
- 46:56Speaker 9: I do think that they. I would anticipate bait them
- 47:00Speaker 9: changing the nine spot. Not that Andy Pajes is the
- 47:04Speaker 9: only problem, but Dave Roberts is hinted at that, and
- 47:06Speaker 9: then another night where the offense goes quiet, so I
- 47:09Speaker 9: could see a change coming. I'd say this though, Scott,
- 47:12Speaker 9: I know when you look at the full numbers, they
- 47:14Speaker 9: were a great offense. They were the number two run
- 47:16Speaker 9: scoring team in baseball, behind the Yankees, but for two
- 47:20Speaker 9: or three months they were bad, So it's not like
- 47:23Speaker 9: they were just this machine for a full season. There
- 47:26Speaker 9: were long stretches there, and granted that part of it
- 47:28Speaker 9: had to do with injuries, but for a lot of
- 47:31Speaker 9: this summer the offense was disappointing. This isn't that shocking
- 47:34Speaker 9: to see them go through a stretch like this, however
- 47:37Speaker 9: badly timed that It clearly is talking about the lineup.
- 47:41Speaker 6: Would there ever be a chance that they would move
- 47:44Speaker 6: Mooki in front of show Hey, somebody that can handle
- 47:48Speaker 6: pitches middle because clearly teams are coming after Pajes and
- 47:52Speaker 6: it's not working. Show Hay is like the ultimate like
- 47:56Speaker 6: protection in the lineup. Couldn't you use show Hey to
- 47:59Speaker 6: get somebody else hot like Muki, who is essentially why
- 48:03Speaker 6: they've been intentionally walking show Hey the whole time.
- 48:06Speaker 9: Yeah, I love the idea, and for a couple of reasons. Right,
- 48:10Speaker 9: you got Mooki struggling, You have Otani who's getting pitched
- 48:13Speaker 9: around because there's nobody on base when he comes on,
- 48:15Speaker 9: so they have the freedom to handle him however they
- 48:17Speaker 9: want to. Maybe it gets both those guys with the
- 48:21Speaker 9: arrow pointed out, you get Bets a different look there,
- 48:24Speaker 9: and you get Otani maybe with somebody on base. The
- 48:27Speaker 9: other side of that is, I know Dave Roberts rarely
- 48:31Speaker 9: is reactionary, and I know the desperate times call for
- 48:34Speaker 9: desperate measures. You're looking your two losses away from your
- 48:37Speaker 9: season ending, But I would be surprised to see that change,
- 48:41Speaker 9: even though I totally see what you're saying and I
- 48:44Speaker 9: think it makes sense.
- 48:46Speaker 4: Joe, how surprised are you by what the Blue Jays
- 48:48Speaker 4: could have done in this series? I know you've been
- 48:51Speaker 4: following him for a couple of weeks now, and yes,
- 48:53Speaker 4: they're really but if going into this, if you ask
- 48:55Speaker 4: most people, everyone's like, oh, the blue Jays have no
- 48:58Speaker 4: chance against the Dodgers, and yet here are they are
- 49:00Speaker 4: right there? And we asked Ken earlier, We had Ken
- 49:02Speaker 4: on earlier and he kind of gave us his answer.
- 49:05Speaker 4: But how surprised are you, as someone clearly that knows
- 49:07Speaker 4: more about the Dodgers than the Blue Jays, that the
- 49:10Speaker 4: Blue Jays are putting up this kind of fight. Not
- 49:12Speaker 4: only a fight, they're one hit away from being up
- 49:15Speaker 4: three to one in this series.
- 49:16Speaker 9: Yeah, I'm not that surprised, And like you said, we've
- 49:19Speaker 9: been with them throughout this month of October. We had
- 49:22Speaker 9: we've had every playoff game for the Blue Jays, so
- 49:24Speaker 9: we've talked about this a little bit on the broadcast.
- 49:26Speaker 9: But there was this perception, I think that this is
- 49:29Speaker 9: David against Goliath, and that's just not true. Blue Jays
- 49:32Speaker 9: won ninety four games, they were the top team in
- 49:34Speaker 9: the American League. Dodgers have those three MVPs at the top,
- 49:38Speaker 9: and they have this massive payroll, but the Blue Jays
- 49:42Speaker 9: have a top five payroll as well, so it's not
- 49:44Speaker 9: like they're the little engine that could with a bunch
- 49:47Speaker 9: of plucky guys. I know that bat to ball is
- 49:49Speaker 9: part of the identity, and they have those guys and
- 49:52Speaker 9: they have the lineup length. But they also have Vladimir
- 49:55Speaker 9: Guerrero Junior. They also, if he's healthy, have George Springer.
- 49:59Speaker 9: So this is to me that big of a surprise
- 50:01Speaker 9: that this has been a tough series. I think the
- 50:03Speaker 9: folks that thought the Dodgers were gonna roll through the
- 50:05Speaker 9: Blue Jays, probably like me, before October, didn't have a
- 50:09Speaker 9: full appreciation for how well rounded a team the Jays are.
- 50:14Speaker 2: This episode of FT is brought to you by Fuel Cheers.

- 51:12Speaker 2: checkout survey to help support the show.
- 51:14Speaker 4: Okay, so what happens in Game five, The Dodgers need
- 51:19Speaker 4: Blake Snell to give them six seven innings. You Savage,
- 51:22Speaker 4: give them five good innings and there's a better chance
- 51:25Speaker 4: for them. But I mean, the Dodgers we talked about
- 51:27Speaker 4: their lineup are so much relying right now when they're
- 51:29Speaker 4: starting pitching. Especially in an ideal world, Roberts goes Snell
- 51:33Speaker 4: seven Sasaki too, and they win the game and move on.
- 51:35Speaker 4: Maybe a couple homers from show Hey and Freddy, right,
- 51:38Speaker 4: But how much pressure does that put on this Dodger
- 51:40Speaker 4: team knowing, like gosh, Blake Snell's taking them out and
- 51:43Speaker 4: going like, man, if I don't give them six or
- 51:45Speaker 4: seven really good things as we're not scoring like this
- 51:48Speaker 4: is such a change for Dodgers teams of past.
- 51:51Speaker 9: It is, But Dodger team of right now and Blue
- 51:54Speaker 9: Jay's team of right now, I think you're on it.
- 51:57Speaker 9: What's gotten the Dodgers here starting pitching? What stops the
- 52:01Speaker 9: Dodgers their bullpen? You say six or seven from Snell? Heck,
- 52:05Speaker 9: I'd be hoping for nine from Snell. I mean, avoid
- 52:08Speaker 9: that bullpen altogether if you can. Roki Sasaki has been
- 52:13Speaker 9: much better than you anticipated it could have ever envisioned
- 52:15Speaker 9: in the closers role. I still think you can't feel
- 52:19Speaker 9: that great about a kid who just started pitching out
- 52:21Speaker 9: of the bullpen a few weeks ago.
- 52:23Speaker 1: So for the.
- 52:24Speaker 9: Dodgers, the biggest strength has been the starting pitching. It
- 52:27Speaker 9: has to be that if they're going to win this
- 52:29Speaker 9: World Series. For the Blue Jays, you mentioned Treya Savage.
- 52:32Speaker 9: He looked worn down. This is the longest season of
- 52:35Speaker 9: his career. How much can you really put on the
- 52:38Speaker 9: twenty two year old. The thing is they have the
- 52:41Speaker 9: offense to paper over what may not be seven shot
- 52:45Speaker 9: at innings from their starting pitcher. Dodgers are here because
- 52:48Speaker 9: of their starting pitching. If they win, it'll be because
- 52:50Speaker 9: of the same thing. Blue Jays are here because of
- 52:53Speaker 9: their offense. If they win it it'll be because that
- 52:55Speaker 9: offense continues to do enough to overcome whatever they lack
- 52:58Speaker 9: and run prevention.
- 53:00Speaker 1: Joe.
- 53:01Speaker 2: One storyline that I keep pushing is that the Dodgers
- 53:05Speaker 2: could get crapty and start using these starters more frequently
- 53:09Speaker 2: out of the bullpen. We're down only three games.
- 53:11Speaker 1: At this point.
- 53:12Speaker 2: Do you think they do any of that? Hey, everybody
- 53:14Speaker 2: that's got their throw day, you're not throwing. You can
- 53:17Speaker 2: always do it right after the game, but we need
- 53:19Speaker 2: an inning or two out of the rest of the rotation.
- 53:22Speaker 2: I mean, Yamamoto almost pitched a couple days after he
- 53:24Speaker 2: appeared in that extra inning game, and I know there's
- 53:27Speaker 2: a balance of health and arm care and stuff like that,
- 53:29Speaker 2: but it's not like we haven't seen it before. I
- 53:31Speaker 2: always mentioned, like the twenty eighteen Red Sox and Dodgers
- 53:34Speaker 2: have done this before with Arrius. So I'm wondering if
- 53:37Speaker 2: we're going to potentially see that the next few days. Right,
- 53:39Speaker 2: A guy's a couple days from his start, he's got
- 53:42Speaker 2: a throw day. Let me get an inning or two
- 53:43Speaker 2: from you, because I would rather have class now Snell
- 53:47Speaker 2: Yamamoto pitching for an inning or two than whoever else
- 53:50Speaker 2: is the bridge guy.
- 53:51Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 53:51Speaker 9: Well, I think when you look at Game seven, it's
- 53:53Speaker 9: always going to be all hands on deck. Whoever's got
- 53:55Speaker 9: anything left in the tank is going to be on
- 53:57Speaker 9: the table. You mentioned Yamamoto the other night, so he's
- 54:00Speaker 9: willing to do it, but he's not going to do
- 54:03Speaker 9: it given what you said about this is down to
- 54:04Speaker 9: three games now, he's starting in two nights, so you're
- 54:07Speaker 9: not going to see him tonight. So that leaves just
- 54:09Speaker 9: Tiler glass now, and you're not going to pitch your
- 54:12Speaker 9: Game seven starter in a two to two series in
- 54:15Speaker 9: game five. So, uh, we saw it a little bit
- 54:18Speaker 9: early on in the playoffs. Glass now came out of
- 54:20Speaker 9: the bullpen in his first outing. You may see it
- 54:23Speaker 9: at the very back end we saw. Yamamoto is willing
- 54:26Speaker 9: to do it the other night game seven. I think
- 54:28Speaker 9: you'd see it again, but I just don't think it
- 54:30Speaker 9: makes sense at this point. Snell starting tonight, Yamamoto starting
- 54:34Speaker 9: in game six. Those are two of the four options.
- 54:37Speaker 9: Is not going to be Otani having pitched last night,
- 54:39Speaker 9: and you're not going to fire Glass now?
- 54:41Speaker 1: Who you need for game seven?
- 54:43Speaker 3: Agreed? Agreed?
- 54:44Speaker 4: All right, here's here. Here's I have two questions for you. One,
- 54:47Speaker 4: you got a bobblehead and I didn't get one? How
- 54:48Speaker 4: many did Rick get? Did Rick get like twenty five bbbleheads?
- 54:52Speaker 4: Of yourself?
- 54:52Speaker 9: I have?
- 54:53Speaker 3: Actually Rick is the stats guy, Joe statsk They have.
- 54:57Speaker 9: Their own get over here that over there is boxes
- 55:02Speaker 9: of them. So I bet we can get you one.
- 55:05Speaker 5: Wow.
- 55:05Speaker 4: If only I knew a guy that could send me one,
- 55:07Speaker 4: we would put it on I think I can make
- 55:09Speaker 4: that happen. Yes, that would be. It'd be right here
- 55:12Speaker 4: on my desk. Okay, but that dude, Yes, right next
- 55:15Speaker 4: to Hawk and DJ. But here here's my question for you,
- 55:20Speaker 4: oral last night throughout the first pitch, did you see it?
- 55:24Speaker 4: And how much grief is he gonna get? Because he
- 55:28Speaker 4: wasn't even close? I mean it was it was almost
- 55:31Speaker 4: in the grass. I know he has a pitch for
- 55:33Speaker 4: a while, but I mean I'm thinking, like if we
- 55:35Speaker 4: sent Sandy Kofax out there at eighty nine, he probably
- 55:38Speaker 4: would be able to still get it there.
- 55:40Speaker 9: Yeah, I'm worried about him. I figured he'd be fresh.
- 55:45Speaker 9: We we were back to the field getting ready to
- 55:48Speaker 9: do the open and I happen to peek over my
- 55:50Speaker 9: shoulder right before so I could see it. And Rick,
- 55:53Speaker 9: you mentioned my stats guy up there. We both watched
- 55:55Speaker 9: it and just lost it, laughing like we're never gonna
- 55:58Speaker 9: let him live it down.
- 56:00Speaker 3: Oh my gosh, it was so good.
- 56:01Speaker 1: I have the ultimate content.
- 56:02Speaker 4: Well, who would be better, because you know you and
- 56:05Speaker 4: Rick both played sports, would if you had to throw
- 56:07Speaker 4: out the first pitch?
- 56:08Speaker 3: And Rick, who I love?
- 56:09Speaker 4: Rick is again the stats guy for Joe and he
- 56:12Speaker 4: also does a great job for me. So who would
- 56:14Speaker 4: be better at a first pitch if you both had
- 56:16Speaker 4: to do it, Who's who's going to give you the
- 56:17Speaker 4: better toss?
- 56:19Speaker 9: For sure, Rick, because I would yip out, Dude, that'd
- 56:21Speaker 9: be like, oh my, I would make Oral look like.
- 56:27Speaker 2: Oral broadcasters. He can call a world series. But first pitch.
- 56:35Speaker 2: I don't do first pitch. I know a lot of broadcasters.
- 56:37Speaker 2: They're like, no, because all you're doing is giving Ammo.
- 56:40Speaker 9: Right bablehead night on my Bobblehead Night, they said, do
- 56:43Speaker 9: you want to throw it out?
- 56:44Speaker 5: Hell?
- 56:44Speaker 1: No, my kids are throwing it out.
- 56:46Speaker 9: I'm not going out on that limb.
- 56:49Speaker 2: I could not agree more. There's nothing to lose or
- 56:52Speaker 2: nothing to gain and everything to lose. Right if you
- 56:55Speaker 2: throw it, well, it's.
- 56:55Speaker 4: Like okay, unless unless you're Bob Costas. Bob Costas did
- 56:59Speaker 4: it and he threw it and it was so bad,
- 57:02Speaker 4: and he always every time he comes on he brings
- 57:03Speaker 4: it up. He threw it so bad. It was for
- 57:05Speaker 4: commercial for Saint Louis. He did it again, and he
- 57:08Speaker 4: threw a strike and nobody booed nobody. He literally threw
- 57:11Speaker 4: it ten feet to my right and he goes, hey,
- 57:13Speaker 4: I need you to catch my first pitch. He I
- 57:15Speaker 4: dove for it to try to make it look good.
- 57:17Speaker 4: Wasn't even close. He's just like, give me the ball.
- 57:21Speaker 4: They rolled him a different ball boom strike, and then
- 57:23Speaker 4: I was the one they used on.
- 57:24Speaker 3: The Saint Louis commercial.
- 57:25Speaker 1: There you go.
- 57:26Speaker 3: Yeah, so I don't know.
- 57:29Speaker 9: I'm gonna avoid that whole thing.
- 57:31Speaker 1: Yeah I would. I would say, like.
- 57:33Speaker 4: You avoid eating after five o'clock and the chuck eplayed it.
- 57:36Speaker 1: But Joe, this was great.
- 57:37Speaker 2: Thanks for hopping on with us, really appreciating it for
- 57:40Speaker 2: our crowd. Obviously you'll catch Joe tonight for Game five
- 57:43Speaker 2: and enjoy it.
- 57:43Speaker 4: Manhappy Wait, hold up, no, before he goes, I have
- 57:45Speaker 4: to ask him one more question because I'm sorry, I
- 57:47Speaker 4: know one more they get mad of me. Joe, when
- 57:49Speaker 4: did you guys start the Smoltz slide? Because he used
- 57:52Speaker 4: you know what you know? Do you see like this
- 57:54Speaker 4: on the on the open camera?
- 57:56Speaker 3: Now you have.
- 57:57Speaker 4: The the old Smoltz is off the camera and then
- 57:59Speaker 4: you're like.
- 57:59Speaker 9: Yeah, in here John and you just boom right, you practice,
- 58:05Speaker 9: we get ready like he'll he'll practice and make sure
- 58:07Speaker 9: it's hips are loose.
- 58:08Speaker 4: And definitely did just have hip surgery, just I think
- 58:11Speaker 4: your replacement did.
- 58:12Speaker 9: And he is really proud of those hips.
- 58:14Speaker 3: So he's like, watch my slid slide into this show.
- 58:18Speaker 1: Topic, all right, so we'll look for it. Joe, thanks man,
- 58:21Speaker 1: have fun, all right, boys, take care you too, appreciate
- 58:26Speaker 1: it all right. That's Joe Davis.
- 58:27Speaker 2: Obviously you can catch him tonight on Fox and on
- 58:31Speaker 2: the Fox one at Thanks to Fox one for hooking
- 58:33Speaker 2: us up with great guests.
- 58:35Speaker 1: That's the show. That's it. You can roll the music
- 58:38Speaker 1: and get ready for.
