- 0:00Speaker 1: Get our champs. So we all want to get better.
- 0:04Speaker 1: We all want to get better at stuff. We want
- 0:06Speaker 1: to do better, think better, We want to improve, we
- 0:09Speaker 1: want to grow, we want to learn, we want to evolve,
- 0:11Speaker 1: we want to adapt. We want to be able to thrive,
- 0:14Speaker 1: not just survive. We want to be the best version
- 0:16Speaker 1: of us all that stuff we do. And that is
- 0:20Speaker 1: why many of you listen to me talk. That is
- 0:22Speaker 1: why many of you come for a little bit of
- 0:24Speaker 1: coaching and inspiration and a bit of fun at times.
- 0:28Speaker 1: But I guess the one thing that most humans anyway
- 0:31Speaker 1: have in common is that they would like to be
- 0:35Speaker 1: in a better situation or circumstance or environment than they
- 0:41Speaker 1: currently are in. And while of course that means different
- 0:45Speaker 1: things and to different people, but we all want to
- 0:50Speaker 1: get better at something, improve ourselves on some level, grow, learn, evolve,
- 0:56Speaker 1: get healthier, earn more dollars, be more productive, be more efficient,
- 1:02Speaker 1: be more resilient, Be the person who doesn't lose their
- 1:05Speaker 1: shit all the time, be the calm and the chaos.
- 1:08Speaker 1: Be a better boss or leader, or parent, or partner
- 1:13Speaker 1: or friend or in my case son, role model also friend.
- 1:19Speaker 1: I guess podcast to speak a motivator mentor coach walker
- 1:24Speaker 1: of my own talk. I'm always thinking about how I
- 1:30Speaker 1: can be better for myself and for others, what I
- 1:33Speaker 1: can do to develop more skill or knowledge or patience
- 1:37Speaker 1: or compassion or empathy or awareness or understanding, or to
- 1:41Speaker 1: be on a practical level, more productive and more effective
- 1:46Speaker 1: at what I do. And there are a lot of
- 1:50Speaker 1: ideas and a lot of principles which are pretty universal,
- 1:54Speaker 1: a lot of strategies that we can embrace. And so
- 1:59Speaker 1: today is going to be really just more a little
- 2:02Speaker 1: bit of a pit stop for you. Like we do
- 2:04Speaker 1: so much on this show, so many conversations about how
- 2:08Speaker 1: people did, stuff, changed, grew, you know, one loss, you know,
- 2:12Speaker 1: peaks and troughs, pitfalls, tears, laughter, joy, you know all
- 2:16Speaker 1: that stuff. And what I want to share with you
- 2:20Speaker 1: today is just ten really fundamental ideas or fundamental questions
- 2:25Speaker 1: really that you might want to jop down or at
- 2:29Speaker 1: the very least think about lean into. I've got ten
- 2:33Speaker 1: of them. They might not all be relevant or important
- 2:37Speaker 1: for you, but one or two of them might, or
- 2:41Speaker 1: a bit more. But I'll let you be the judge
- 2:43Speaker 1: of that. So what I'm gonna do is talk about them,
- 2:48Speaker 1: unpack them a little bit, and then you know, so
- 2:52Speaker 1: much of our outcomes results abilities to transform, be better,
- 3:02Speaker 1: do better, think better, create better. So much of that
- 3:05Speaker 1: is about our willingness to step out of the theory
- 3:09Speaker 1: of a podcast, out of the theory of a workshop,
- 3:13Speaker 1: or the theory of a book, or the theory of
- 3:15Speaker 1: fucking self help meme or whatever it is, and to
- 3:19Speaker 1: be able to operationalize that idea or that message or
- 3:22Speaker 1: that insight or that science or that wisdom, so that
- 3:27Speaker 1: not only are we tuning into good stuff and we're
- 3:29Speaker 1: hearing good stuff, and we're learning good stuff and listening
- 3:32Speaker 1: to and maybe even remembering good stuff. But more important
- 3:36Speaker 1: than all of that theoretical stuff is we are activating it.
- 3:40Speaker 1: We're doing something with it. And as cheesy as this sounds,
- 3:45Speaker 1: transformation lives in the application of the information, the doing,
- 3:50Speaker 1: not just the knowing. And so many of us are
- 3:52Speaker 1: so knowing, we're so clever, we know so much stuff.
- 3:56Speaker 1: We've got such a huge kind of bank of theory
- 4:00Speaker 1: just logged away in our little brain or our giant brain.
- 4:05Speaker 1: But also so many of us have really been fucking
- 4:08Speaker 1: around for a very long time and not doing what
- 4:11Speaker 1: we know, certainly not optimizing what we know, certainly not
- 4:16Speaker 1: optimizing our potential or our time, or our genetics, or
- 4:21Speaker 1: our resources or our skills, quite often being held to
- 4:26Speaker 1: ransom by our self doubt or our fear, or our insecurity,
- 4:33Speaker 1: or our overthinking, chaotic underperforming at times mind and all
- 4:40Speaker 1: of the stories that we tell ourselves about why today's
- 4:43Speaker 1: not the day and we can't do it, and all
- 4:47Speaker 1: of those things. So let's try to step out of
- 4:49Speaker 1: the emotion for a little bit. Let's try to step
- 4:53Speaker 1: out of the emotion of I'm not good enough and
- 4:55Speaker 1: but you don't understand, and it's hard, and it's all
- 4:57Speaker 1: that shit right, and I get it, and it is
- 5:00Speaker 1: hard at times. But also one two things can be
- 5:04Speaker 1: true at the same time. One, yes, it is true
- 5:06Speaker 1: that some things are hard, too, It's also true that
- 5:09Speaker 1: sometimes we make things hard that are not, and then
- 5:14Speaker 1: eventually it becomes hard not because of the task itself,
- 5:17Speaker 1: but rather the anxiety or the fear or the avoidance
- 5:21Speaker 1: that we've wrapped around it. So what we want to
- 5:23Speaker 1: try to do is to listen to this stuff objectively.
- 5:29Speaker 1: I ask myself all of these questions, and there are
- 5:32Speaker 1: times when I need to take myself into the room
- 5:34Speaker 1: and mirrors and have a good look at myself and
- 5:36Speaker 1: my behavior and my reactions and my outcomes and my choices,
- 5:39Speaker 1: because you know, I'm just like you. I'm human, I'm flawed.
- 5:42Speaker 1: I have good days and bad days. You have good
- 5:44Speaker 1: days and bad days. You do great shit, you do
- 5:46Speaker 1: dumb shit, You fall down, you get up. You're human.
- 5:49Speaker 1: But in the middle of all of the trying to
- 5:52Speaker 1: build the best version of ourselves that we can, we
- 5:56Speaker 1: at times need to turn up the strategy and the
- 5:59Speaker 1: logic and the reason and the planning and the accountability,
- 6:03Speaker 1: all of those very practical things and turned down as
- 6:06Speaker 1: much as possible easier said than done, but turned down
- 6:08Speaker 1: the emotion, turned down the fear, and turned down all
- 6:14Speaker 1: of that internal kind of chaos that stops us from
- 6:18Speaker 1: doing Alright, here we go. So question one is simply this,
- 6:23Speaker 1: what do I need to get better at? What do I? So?
- 6:28Speaker 1: What do you? What do you need to get better at?
- 6:32Speaker 1: What is the thing that you are not currently doing well?
- 6:35Speaker 1: What is the thing that you need to do better
- 6:38Speaker 1: that will improve the quality of your life, the quality
- 6:41Speaker 1: of your experiences, interactions, relationships, health, work, experience, communication, understanding others,
- 6:51Speaker 1: decision making, all of that stuff. What is the stuff
- 6:55Speaker 1: that you need to be better at that is going
- 6:58Speaker 1: to make your life or your life experience or the
- 7:00Speaker 1: experience of others around you. Remember that, what's it like
- 7:05Speaker 1: being around you? What do you need to get better at?
- 7:08Speaker 1: So that could be anything in the personal space or
- 7:11Speaker 1: the professional space. It could be physical health, it could
- 7:14Speaker 1: be mental health. That could be producing outcomes. It could
- 7:18Speaker 1: be persevering. It could be being the solution person, not
- 7:23Speaker 1: the problem person, recognizing the problem, but being all about
- 7:27Speaker 1: the solution. It could be being the person that stops
- 7:31Speaker 1: giving up, the person who finishes stuff, the person who
- 7:35Speaker 1: sees things through, the person who, as difficult as it is,
- 7:40Speaker 1: chooses to be positive. And no, we can't just magic
- 7:45Speaker 1: up a new emotion. But guess what. When we focus
- 7:48Speaker 1: on things, we shift our focus, We ask different questions,
- 7:53Speaker 1: we tell ourselves a new story. We can start to
- 7:57Speaker 1: shift our psychology, which means which means we can start
- 8:00Speaker 1: to shift our motion and our physiology around. So question
- 8:03Speaker 1: one is what do you need to get better at?
- 8:05Speaker 1: Don't overthink it, don't complicate it. It doesn't need to
- 8:08Speaker 1: be too scientific or high level. It might just be
- 8:12Speaker 1: something really simple, like I need to stop putting shit
- 8:15Speaker 1: in my body. The end, I need to stop putting
- 8:19Speaker 1: shit in my body. I need to stop waiting for
- 8:21Speaker 1: the right time. I need to stop bullshitting myself about
- 8:25Speaker 1: the destructive things that I do. Whatever it is, acknowledge it,
- 8:30Speaker 1: write it down, and then do something about it. Most importantly,
- 8:34Speaker 1: do something about it. Number two is how much do
- 8:36Speaker 1: you want it? How much do you want to change
- 8:39Speaker 1: that thing? These are real fundamental questions, right But the
- 8:43Speaker 1: reason that I ask these real fundamental questions is because
- 8:47Speaker 1: I talk to people, as you know, all the time,
- 8:50Speaker 1: and I have for forty years, and oftentimes people will
- 8:53Speaker 1: tell me what they want to do. But at the
- 8:56Speaker 1: same time, other than the words that are coming out
- 8:59Speaker 1: of their mouth, everything else about them is telling me
- 9:03Speaker 1: that they're not going to do it. Though yeah, I
- 9:06Speaker 1: want to, yeap, I really want to improve this or
- 9:09Speaker 1: change that or be healthier. I'd love to, I'd want yep, yep, yep,
- 9:13Speaker 1: But everything about them is like, but I'm not fucking
- 9:17Speaker 1: doing it because I don't want it that much. My
- 9:21Speaker 1: experience is that people love the idea of success, the
- 9:24Speaker 1: idea of living in an amazingly fit, strong, healthy, functional body,
- 9:29Speaker 1: the idea of a dream job, the idea of a
- 9:32Speaker 1: dream situation. But while some people will do what's required,
- 9:38Speaker 1: many people will not. Many people want the top of
- 9:42Speaker 1: the mountain, as I've said to you before, Many people
- 9:45Speaker 1: want to sit on the top of Everest, but they
- 9:47Speaker 1: don't want to climb Everest. They want the summit without
- 9:49Speaker 1: the climb. They want the reward without the work. They
- 9:53Speaker 1: want the prize without the effort, all of those fucking metaphors.
- 9:56Speaker 1: That's what they want. And if you think about it,
- 10:01Speaker 1: if I've got the skill, and I've got the talent,
- 10:03Speaker 1: and I've got the resources, and I've got a cheer squad,
- 10:06Speaker 1: and I've got all the things I need except the
- 10:10Speaker 1: willingness to fucking do the work no matter what, then
- 10:15Speaker 1: the rest doesn't matter. Without my absolute commitment and willingness
- 10:22Speaker 1: and courage to do the transformational work, then all the
- 10:28Speaker 1: rest is just superfluous noise, all the cheer squadding, all
- 10:32Speaker 1: the resources, all the well Craig so this or your
- 10:35Speaker 1: so that, or all the potential or the IQ or
- 10:38Speaker 1: the great genetics or the ability or the opportunities or
- 10:42Speaker 1: all of that stuff is redundant. If the person in
- 10:45Speaker 1: the middle of all of those great resources and things,
- 10:49Speaker 1: is not willing to do that work that creates better
- 10:55Speaker 1: that creates growth, that creates improvement, that creates positive ada aptation,
- 11:01Speaker 1: that produces better results on planet you like, there needs
- 11:06Speaker 1: to be And I know this sounds a little bit
- 11:09Speaker 1: motivational speaker, one oh one, I don't mean to. Actually,
- 11:12Speaker 1: I'm not trying to motivate you. I'm just trying to
- 11:14Speaker 1: get you to understand that everything comes at a cost.
- 11:18Speaker 1: And yeah, theoretically we know that, but everything and it's
- 11:21Speaker 1: not always a financial cost. Sometimes it's time and effort
- 11:24Speaker 1: and pain and sacrifice and rolling up the sleeves. And
- 11:28Speaker 1: sometimes it's just repetition, repetition. Sometimes it's falling down and
- 11:33Speaker 1: fucking up and getting smashed and getting embarrassed and getting
- 11:36Speaker 1: back up and going, I look like a fuck with.
- 11:38Speaker 1: It's okay, though, I'm prepared to look like a fuck with.
- 11:41Speaker 1: I'm prepared to get punched in the metaphoric face fifty
- 11:45Speaker 1: times because this is how fucking much I want to
- 11:49Speaker 1: get better. This is how much I want to learn, improve, grow, evolve,
- 11:54Speaker 1: build that business, build that body, build that fucking bulletproof mindset.
- 11:59Speaker 1: I am going to do the work right, and this
- 12:02Speaker 1: is the this is the antithesis of the shoulder shruggy brigade. Ah,
- 12:08Speaker 1: I'll see how it works out, Like if you're already
- 12:12Speaker 1: in that look, I'll give it a go and I'll
- 12:14Speaker 1: see how it works out. Either one you need a
- 12:17Speaker 1: massive shift in story and thinking and approach, or you
- 12:21Speaker 1: need to throw it in. Number three is how much
- 12:27Speaker 1: will I inconvenience myself? Which goes with number two a bit.
- 12:30Speaker 1: But success, getting better, winning, whatever we want to call it,
- 12:36Speaker 1: is inconvenient. And we are people who are hardwired for convenience.
- 12:41Speaker 1: We love convenience. We love things to be quick, easy, fast, painless.
- 12:46Speaker 1: We want to get to the you know, the next
- 12:48Speaker 1: floor without walking any stairs. We want the escalator. As
- 12:53Speaker 1: I've said before with the Mountain analogy, it's just the tragic, tragic.
- 12:58Speaker 1: Maybe that's overdoing, maybe not. Maybe the tragic thing about
- 13:01Speaker 1: twenty twenty five is that we are so addicted to
- 13:04Speaker 1: convenience that we would rather push a button, We would
- 13:09Speaker 1: rather reach for some junk food that tastes amazing for
- 13:14Speaker 1: twenty thirty fifty sixty seconds or three minutes of five minutes,
- 13:18Speaker 1: but is over the long term killing us. But it's convenient.
- 13:22Speaker 1: It's right there, and it's high fat, high taste, high salt,
- 13:25Speaker 1: high sugar, high whatever, but it's low nutrition and it's
- 13:29Speaker 1: slowly killing you. And the truth is that sometimes we
- 13:34Speaker 1: just need to be able to grind through the miles
- 13:39Speaker 1: and the minutes and the decisions and the inconvenience of
- 13:45Speaker 1: what's required, because what is required to be awesome is
- 13:50Speaker 1: almost never convenient. Think about anyone who has become a master,
- 13:56Speaker 1: and by that I mean very very high level, anything
- 14:01Speaker 1: like a master at business, a master at Brazilian jiu jitsu,
- 14:05Speaker 1: a master at self control, a master at communication, a
- 14:12Speaker 1: master at research and study. All of those people, all
- 14:18Speaker 1: of those people roll up their slaves and got inconvenienced
- 14:22Speaker 1: for a long time. It's one of the prices. Number four,
- 14:27Speaker 1: Question four. Of all the shit that you want to
- 14:30Speaker 1: get better at, what's at the top of your list?
- 14:35Speaker 1: What is what is your priority? In other words, right now,
- 14:42Speaker 1: what is the most important thing for you to address
- 14:45Speaker 1: and focus on and pay attention to, what needs to
- 14:49Speaker 1: have your energy? And how many things? This is a
- 14:55Speaker 1: great question, how many things can you change at once?
- 15:01Speaker 1: My experiences, we might have a few things in mind,
- 15:06Speaker 1: but there's probably one thing, one key thing, which might
- 15:11Speaker 1: involve other things. Like, for example, if your primary focus
- 15:14Speaker 1: is to get physically healthy, well that's going to involve
- 15:18Speaker 1: other things, isn't it. But your primary focus, your number
- 15:22Speaker 1: one goal for the time being, that's at the top
- 15:26Speaker 1: of your I need to get better at list is
- 15:30Speaker 1: physical health. Now, of course that's going to involve probably exercise,
- 15:34Speaker 1: probably lifestyle, I'll probably sleep, probably nutrition, and probably a
- 15:39Speaker 1: bit of soap, a bunch of stuff. But it all
- 15:42Speaker 1: kind of it all kind of melds into the or
- 15:47Speaker 1: spills into the getting physically better kind of bucket, doesn't it. So?
- 15:53Speaker 1: And my experience is also that we tend to be
- 15:58Speaker 1: better at focusing on one or two key things. Doesn't
- 16:02Speaker 1: mean we're not going to have where we're going to
- 16:04Speaker 1: neglect everything else in our life. But when you say
- 16:07Speaker 1: there's ten things I really need to get better at,
- 16:11Speaker 1: and I'm going to do all ten at the same
- 16:13Speaker 1: time over the next week or month or whatever, the
- 16:16Speaker 1: chances are you'll change nothing. So what's the best investment
- 16:22Speaker 1: of me regarding this thing that I really want to change?
- 16:26Speaker 1: Where should my attention and time and skill and energy
- 16:30Speaker 1: and resources be based on The thing that's at the
- 16:34Speaker 1: top of my list number five. Question five is how
- 16:39Speaker 1: do I self sabotage. We all sell sabotage. We all
- 16:43Speaker 1: get in our own way. For some people that's avoiding
- 16:47Speaker 1: shit we should not avoid. For some people it's procrastination,
- 16:52Speaker 1: fucking around. Probably those two things go together. For some
- 16:56Speaker 1: of us, it's lying. We don't want to say that,
- 16:58Speaker 1: do we. No one wants to think they're a lie.
- 17:01Speaker 1: We'll lie to ourselves, I think, probably the most, and
- 17:04Speaker 1: then maybe to others periodically. But I'm really talking here
- 17:07Speaker 1: about the self awareness, the self, the self reflection and
- 17:14Speaker 1: what comes out of that, Like what am I aware of.
- 17:16Speaker 1: I'm aware that I avoid certain situations, or that I
- 17:20Speaker 1: won't have certain conversations. I'm aware that I bullshit myself
- 17:25Speaker 1: and others about certain things. Self sabotage might also come,
- 17:32Speaker 1: as I spoke about a minute ago, in the form
- 17:34Speaker 1: of instant gratification. I'll have this piece of I'll have
- 17:37Speaker 1: this piece of cake now, and I'll start tomorrow. I'll
- 17:39Speaker 1: have whatever it is, this beer, this whatever, I'll do
- 17:42Speaker 1: this dumb thing over the weekend because it's my brother's birthday,
- 17:46Speaker 1: so I'm going to go hard for the weekend, but
- 17:48Speaker 1: then I'm going to start Monday, and from Monday everything
- 17:51Speaker 1: will be amazing. And of course it won't be amazing
- 17:55Speaker 1: because you've said yourself. You've said that to yourself or
- 17:57Speaker 1: a version of that story many times, and here you
- 18:00Speaker 1: are and you're still spinning your wheels and you're still
- 18:02Speaker 1: not doing the things that you said you would do
- 18:05Speaker 1: one hundred times before. I guess we also self sabotage,
- 18:11Speaker 1: or we can also self sabotage by choosing easy, you know,
- 18:16Speaker 1: taking the easy path, taking the path of least resistance.
- 18:22Speaker 1: But let me be clear, if there's a hard way
- 18:24Speaker 1: an easy way to produce the same outcome, I'm taking
- 18:27Speaker 1: the easy way with you. But typically that's not how
- 18:31Speaker 1: it works. So how do you currently self sabotage? How
- 18:35Speaker 1: do you get in your own way? It might be
- 18:38Speaker 1: any one of those. It might be that you constantly
- 18:40Speaker 1: need a round of applause and a cheer squad, an endorsement,
- 18:43Speaker 1: and a pad on the back, and you need someone
- 18:46Speaker 1: to tell you that you're amazing and all of those things.
- 18:48Speaker 1: And while those things are nice, we all love a
- 18:52Speaker 1: pat on the back, We all love a cheers god,
- 18:54Speaker 1: we all love accolades. We all love being appreciated and
- 18:57Speaker 1: valued and seen. We love all of that. But what's
- 19:00Speaker 1: not good is when we're dependent on that, when we
- 19:06Speaker 1: can't do what we need to do unless there are
- 19:09Speaker 1: ten people standing by clapping. So how do you self sabotage?
- 19:16Speaker 1: What are you going to do about it? I'm realizing
- 19:20Speaker 1: a couple of these are overlapping, so I'm going to
- 19:26Speaker 1: skip one or two. I'm going to go maybe my
- 19:29Speaker 1: second last question is what are my results telling me?
- 19:34Speaker 1: What are my results telling me? You and me, we
- 19:36Speaker 1: are always producing results. We're always doing stuff and getting
- 19:40Speaker 1: an outcome. We're producing data, and whatever the result is,
- 19:45Speaker 1: it's just it's a result. It's objective information. It's not
- 19:51Speaker 1: an emotion or an opinion. You might do a piece
- 19:56Speaker 1: of schoolwork. You're hand it in and you get it back,
- 19:58Speaker 1: You've got eighty percent. That's the result. That's your objective
- 20:02Speaker 1: piece of information. I got eighty percent, or I got
- 20:05Speaker 1: fifty percent. Or you might try a little project and
- 20:09Speaker 1: you want to lose four ks in four weeks. You
- 20:12Speaker 1: do the project, you undertake the new protocol, You change
- 20:17Speaker 1: some decisions and behaviors and habits for a bit or
- 20:20Speaker 1: behaviors at least. Probably habits take longer. But in four
- 20:23Speaker 1: weeks you lost four kilograms. You lost kilogram a week
- 20:28Speaker 1: on average. That's just data. That doesn't mean anything until
- 20:31Speaker 1: you give that one kilo per week or that four
- 20:34Speaker 1: kilos of four weeks kind of outcome. That data, that information,
- 20:38Speaker 1: you give it meaning, You give it meaning. You might
- 20:41Speaker 1: go four weeks as a good result. Four weeks is
- 20:43Speaker 1: not a good result because I wanted to lose six
- 20:46Speaker 1: or maybe four weeks is a great result because I
- 20:49Speaker 1: was aiming for half a kilo ish a week and
- 20:51Speaker 1: I've lost one kilo a week exactly, which is bloody amazing.
- 20:55Speaker 1: So but the point is that we're always producing results
- 20:59Speaker 1: in our world. Need to figure out if based on
- 21:01Speaker 1: the results that I'm getting with whatever it is my
- 21:03Speaker 1: relationships or my bank balance, or my career or my
- 21:08Speaker 1: fitness project or my research project or whatever it is
- 21:11Speaker 1: that I'm doing being and trying to create, are my
- 21:15Speaker 1: results aligning with what I want to create? Are they
- 21:19Speaker 1: a positive reflection of my effort and energy and focus
- 21:24Speaker 1: and choices. Now, this is not to rate ourselves, but
- 21:32Speaker 1: rather just rate the results. We're not trying to make
- 21:35Speaker 1: ourselves feel good or feel bad. We're trying to figure
- 21:38Speaker 1: out what works. So if I do a certain thing
- 21:42Speaker 1: trying to create a good outcome or a particular outcome,
- 21:46Speaker 1: and I do the thing and I create the outcome
- 21:49Speaker 1: I wanted or hopeful, then I go, wow, that is
- 21:51Speaker 1: a pretty good protocol because I did that thing, I
- 21:54Speaker 1: created the result I wanted. Or maybe I do that
- 21:56Speaker 1: thing and I create half of what I wanted, and
- 21:59Speaker 1: I go, well, look, it's definitely moving in the right direction.
- 22:02Speaker 1: It's moving the needle. There's some good in there, but
- 22:05Speaker 1: I probably need to do a little bit of tweaking,
- 22:08Speaker 1: or it might produce no result or a bad result.
- 22:12Speaker 1: Either way, we're learning. Either way, you are always producing
- 22:18Speaker 1: results and outcomes that are for you if you make them.
- 22:23Speaker 1: They are lessons. This is interesting data that you can
- 22:30Speaker 1: then reflect upon way up the outcomes with the thing
- 22:35Speaker 1: that you did. Figure out if that's what you wanted
- 22:39Speaker 1: or not. If it is what you wanted, great, can
- 22:42Speaker 1: it be improved upon even further? If it isn't, what
- 22:45Speaker 1: do you need to change? What happened? Why was it
- 22:47Speaker 1: a bad plan? Why was it a bad protocol? But nonetheless,
- 22:51Speaker 1: either way, pay attention to what's happening in your world
- 22:55Speaker 1: as a result of your choices and behaviors, because in
- 23:00Speaker 1: those outcomes, in that data is gold is gold. All right,
- 23:08Speaker 1: let's do let's do let's do this one. What's your
- 23:17Speaker 1: and you've heard me say this many times some of you,
- 23:20Speaker 1: what's your post motivation plan? In other words, if I
- 23:27Speaker 1: inspire you a little bit today, or prompt you a
- 23:29Speaker 1: little bit today, or you get whatever reason, you go,
- 23:32Speaker 1: fuck it, I'm going to do it. I'm going to
- 23:34Speaker 1: do this bit, I'm gonna I'm going to make that decision,
- 23:37Speaker 1: do that thing, and from today I'm starting. I'm starting,
- 23:41Speaker 1: and you're a little bit more focused, a little bit
- 23:43Speaker 1: more inspired, you're a little bit more in the zone.
- 23:46Speaker 1: And then so you start, and then a week passes
- 23:50Speaker 1: and now you're not motivated. You still have the same
- 23:53Speaker 1: need to do that thing, because you're the same person
- 23:55Speaker 1: with the same issues, but now it's a week later,
- 23:58Speaker 1: and the feeling that you have at the start, I'm pumped,
- 24:02Speaker 1: I'm a little bit excited, I'm a bit more focused,
- 24:04Speaker 1: I'm a bit more motivated. I have a bit of
- 24:06Speaker 1: self awareness because Craig pointed out this thing that I do.
- 24:09Speaker 1: I recognize myself in his words, and now I'm fucking
- 24:13Speaker 1: doing this thing. Go me right, And then we fast
- 24:16Speaker 1: forward seven days. All of that energy's gone, that emotion's gone,
- 24:20Speaker 1: that feeling's gone, but the need to change, the need
- 24:24Speaker 1: to get better, the need to improve, is still there.
- 24:29Speaker 1: So the ever present question is how do I keep
- 24:32Speaker 1: doing what I need to do when I can't be bothered?
- 24:37Speaker 1: How do I stay proactive and productive and effective and
- 24:40Speaker 1: doing what's required without being in the zone, without being
- 24:46Speaker 1: excited all the time. Because the challenge is that the
- 24:52Speaker 1: challenge is that you and I are not perpetually motivated
- 24:57Speaker 1: in the sense that I'm talking about motivation right now.
- 24:59Speaker 1: We're not perpetually put your teeth in aps. We're not
- 25:03Speaker 1: perpetually in the zone. We're not perpetually excited. We're not
- 25:06Speaker 1: perpetually pumping the air where all of it, all of
- 25:11Speaker 1: the time, where or overtime anyway, We're up and down,
- 25:16Speaker 1: we're excited, we're scared, we're confident, where competent and incompetent
- 25:23Speaker 1: depending on what we're doing. But the challenge for us
- 25:26Speaker 1: is just too hopefully, in general terms, keep moving forward,
- 25:32Speaker 1: keep taking ground, keep improving, keep learning, keep developing, and
- 25:38Speaker 1: there will be weeks when we go backwards, but you
- 25:40Speaker 1: look at the overall month and you go, yeah, the
- 25:43Speaker 1: second week of this month was shit, but the overall
- 25:46Speaker 1: result for this month is a net gain, or it
- 25:50Speaker 1: might even be a loss. But then we kind of
- 25:53Speaker 1: zoom out and we go, yeah, that month was shit.
- 25:55Speaker 1: But overall these three months, I've moved forward. I've learned,
- 25:58Speaker 1: I've grown on producing better results. I'm doing less of
- 26:01Speaker 1: that bad thing more of that good thing. So overall
- 26:04Speaker 1: it's good. And in the middle of all of that,
- 26:07Speaker 1: you and I need to find a way to build
- 26:11Speaker 1: an operating system and a lifestyle and a way of
- 26:14Speaker 1: doing and being which isn't dependent on motivation, which isn't
- 26:22Speaker 1: dependent on excitement or the cheer squad or any of
- 26:25Speaker 1: those things we've spoken about today. How will you keep
- 26:31Speaker 1: doing what you need to do in six months from
- 26:35Speaker 1: now when you can't even remember a word I said?
- 26:39Speaker 1: How will you keep doing? What can you put in place?
- 26:44Speaker 1: What structural process or accountability, What non negotiable can you
- 26:49Speaker 1: truly commit to? Not Oh, I'll do it when i'm pumped. No,
- 26:52Speaker 1: fuck it, this is what I'm doing. This is my
- 26:55Speaker 1: new normal. This is me. This is how I am now.
- 26:59Speaker 1: I don't need to be inspired or motivated. It's like,
- 27:02Speaker 1: I just do this. And I've bored many of you
- 27:05Speaker 1: with my revelation about my steps about seven or eight
- 27:09Speaker 1: months ago now where I realized that I just didn't
- 27:12Speaker 1: walk much, and that was part of one of my
- 27:16Speaker 1: problems with a few things, with back pain and all
- 27:19Speaker 1: of these things. Anyway, I made a decision on that
- 27:23Speaker 1: day and since that day, which was I guess eight
- 27:26Speaker 1: months ago now maybe October or November last year, it's
- 27:29Speaker 1: currently heading towards July now as I record this. But
- 27:34Speaker 1: I don't need to get pumped or excited or disciplined
- 27:36Speaker 1: or in the zone, because I literally went, oh, this
- 27:39Speaker 1: is what I do now. I walk ten thousand steps
- 27:41Speaker 1: a day. I don't walk ten thousand minimum. I don't
- 27:45Speaker 1: walk ten thousand steps a day when I want to
- 27:48Speaker 1: or when it's sunny, or when it's convenient, or when
- 27:52Speaker 1: I've got spare time. I just walked ten thousand steps
- 27:56Speaker 1: a day. So the question is not will I or won't?
- 27:59Speaker 1: Either is when will I? And the other question is
- 28:03Speaker 1: will I walk more than ten? And the other question is, well,
- 28:07Speaker 1: I'm really busy today. So how do I do it? All? Right, Well,
- 28:10Speaker 1: I'm going to do I'm going to walk five here
- 28:13Speaker 1: and five there, give or take, and then anything above
- 28:16Speaker 1: that as a bonus. Okay, this is really one of
- 28:20Speaker 1: the keys, is that you and I need to be
- 28:23Speaker 1: able to get better. Whatever better is without the need
- 28:28Speaker 1: for a tail breeze, without it needing to be downhill
- 28:34Speaker 1: and easy. Sometimes it's going to be fucking uphill into
- 28:37Speaker 1: the wind, seemingly through quicksand but that's just sometimes where
- 28:45Speaker 1: we've got to operate. I don't know if that was
- 28:49Speaker 1: any good or not. I felt like I shared a
- 28:51Speaker 1: few good ideas, and as that's coming out of my mouth,
- 28:55Speaker 1: I'm sounding very insecure. Anyway, kids, have a great day,
- 28:59Speaker 1: have a great week. Whenever you hear this, if you
- 29:01Speaker 1: hear it tomorrow, when it goes up, it'll be a Monday. Otherwise,
- 29:05Speaker 1: whatever day you listen to this, have a great day.
- 29:07Speaker 1: See you next time.
