- 0:39SPEAKER_04: Welcome in, everybody, to the Talk and Tech Podcast powered by Guns Up Nation, part of the Guns Up Nation Podcast Network.
- 0:46SPEAKER_04: I am your host, Steven Rodriguez, my co-host Tristan McGonagall.
- 0:49SPEAKER_04: And Tristan, uh, what a nightmare.
- 0:54SPEAKER_03: All I got from that day was a sunburn and a hangover.
- 0:58SPEAKER_03: I didn't even get to walk out of that stadium with my dignity.
- 1:01SPEAKER_04: I I I don't envy you from being actually present physically for that game in the stadium.
- 1:10SPEAKER_04: Uh what what a nightmare.
- 1:12SPEAKER_04: What an awful showing uh from Texas Tech, uh in pretty much every sense of the word, awful.
- 1:19SPEAKER_04: Um yeah, man, just a just a nightmare.
- 1:23SPEAKER_04: Just a total, total nightmare as a Texas Tech fan watching that game.
- 1:27SPEAKER_04: Um you after a loss like this, and unfortunately we've experienced this far too much since we've been fans, big time losses.
- 1:36SPEAKER_04: Um you know, it hurts just that much more that it was UT, though.
- 1:42SPEAKER_03: Yeah, it was a UT team that may not be that all spectacular.
- 1:45SPEAKER_03: It's a UT team that's on its way out to the SEC.
- 1:49SPEAKER_03: Um, it might have been the last time we ever play the Longhorns and Daryl K as conference opponents, and that's what we put on the table to remember the uh us by.
- 1:58SPEAKER_03: It's just really painful in that sense.
- 2:01SPEAKER_03: Um, it's there's really not a whole lot of good you can take from that day.
- 2:04SPEAKER_03: It never felt like there was ever a game from the first snap.
- 2:07SPEAKER_03: It felt like we were not there to play football, and we just let our biggest rivals embarrass us.
- 2:13SPEAKER_03: It's just a shame.
- 2:14SPEAKER_03: It's the one game that you should uh put all your cards on the deck for.
- 2:18SPEAKER_03: But it's just unfortunately what we got was a pretty uh pathetic showing, yeah, and a pretty pathetic showing all around.
- 2:25SPEAKER_04: But you know, the offense at least got a couple got some touchdowns on the board, got some points on the board there.
- 2:30SPEAKER_04: Um, as uh you know, as Tyler Shuck exited the game with an injury, Henry Columbi came in there and played pretty good.
- 2:37SPEAKER_04: Uh, and and we'll get into him here in a bit.
- 2:40SPEAKER_04: But uh yeah, Texas wins 70, 70 points to 35.
- 2:45SPEAKER_04: Uh, just uh again, uh the defense may as well have just stayed on the bus.
- 2:51SPEAKER_04: I mean, they may they weren't on the field as far as I'm convinced.
- 2:55SPEAKER_04: Uh, watching that game, the uh there's not even a unit that would that I could say was was okay on defense this game.
- 3:03SPEAKER_04: I mean, linebackers are missing, missing tackles, the defensive line didn't get any uh literally zero pressures on Casey Thompson.
- 3:10SPEAKER_04: Uh, and then our defensive backs were were awful as well, letting Xavier Worthy go off and Whittington and everybody go off.
- 3:18SPEAKER_04: So um I think it starts there with the defense because we were expecting so much more going into this game after the first three games of the year.
- 3:29SPEAKER_04: That was you know, we were, I think we talked to Kyle last week, and we were like fifth in the nation in rushing defense.
- 3:36SPEAKER_04: And granted, we didn't play great competition in Houston, Florida International, and Stephen F.
- 3:41SPEAKER_04: Austin, but you know, you don't you still expect to do something better than what transpired on the field.
- 3:49SPEAKER_03: A very uh it's a productive offense got completely just overshadowed by this defense that didn't force a single punt.
- 3:57SPEAKER_03: Um, because it it was a complete 180 from what the way we've been talking about this team is that you know the offense has been slow, blah blah blah.
- 4:05SPEAKER_03: You know, they we need to bring a little more energy to the field, uh, but we have nothing but the utmost praise to the defense, and I understand the defense is going to have a poor showing from here and there, and that's why there's two units on the field.
- 4:19SPEAKER_03: You know, one one can perhaps carry the weight of the other one a little harder if the other one's struggling, but um, there was no saving this game at all whenever the defense is playing that poorly, so we we couldn't even expect to uh go into a offensive shootout if you're not even gonna just force them to punt once.
- 4:39SPEAKER_03: Uh it just so disappointing because we have been in highly impressed with Keith Patterson's teeth, and just this put a complete smear on the other games because this this is just an uncharacteristic shift of how bad they looked.
- 4:56SPEAKER_04: Yeah, yeah.
- 4:57SPEAKER_04: I mean, I'm not gonna pretend like I'm some football genius that knows the ins and outs of everything that goes on, like a defensive coordinator such as Keith Patterson.
- 5:08SPEAKER_04: But you know, you think you're going into Texas, you got to really focus on one guy on that offense, and that's Bijan Robinson.
- 5:15SPEAKER_04: And uh he was left open on way too many plays.
- 5:20SPEAKER_04: We could not stop him.
- 5:21SPEAKER_04: Uh, we rushed three guys almost all game.
- 5:26SPEAKER_04: I mean we talked about this with Kyle last week, but uh what did we need to do?
- 5:33SPEAKER_04: We need to get in Casey Thompson's grill and force him to make plays.
- 5:39SPEAKER_04: Instead, we rushed three and gave him literally all the time in the world to make a play.
- 5:45SPEAKER_04: And he did, he made those plays.
- 5:47SPEAKER_04: I'm not saying Casey Thompson is a bad quarterback, I think he's a solid quarterback, he's not as good as what he was against tech, and that's because literally any quarterback's gonna do fine when you have zero pressure on you the entire game.
- 6:00SPEAKER_04: So I don't know what Keith Patterson was thinking going the entire game rushing three, uh, and not getting any guys on him at all.
- 6:12SPEAKER_04: I I just don't understand how, and then you don't change it throughout the entire game.
- 6:17SPEAKER_04: So I don't know, man.
- 6:19SPEAKER_04: It was it was ridiculous.
- 6:20SPEAKER_03: I I didn't really understand though that kind of play call for this game at all.
- 6:24SPEAKER_03: I I understand maybe playing a more conservative game, whether you're playing a team that is maybe more on your level level talent-wise or lower than you talent-wise.
- 6:32SPEAKER_03: I can maybe understand that, but whenever you're facing a team that's probably got a better player than you on every position, um, and it's your biggest rival and you're in hostile territory.
- 6:41SPEAKER_03: I don't know why you don't, you know, show some guts and start calling some ballsy plays to rush the quarterback.
- 6:48SPEAKER_03: Um, yeah, you might leave some uh some open to the backfield, but you need to make something happen if all he's gonna do is have all day to pick a target to throw it to.
- 6:57SPEAKER_03: You need to you need to change it up.
- 6:59SPEAKER_03: And I I just I could not understand for the life of me why we didn't want to just go for it, you know, especially in the second quarter when things were already looking like midnight dark black, you know, like it was looking bad.
- 7:11SPEAKER_03: So I don't know why you don't just go ahead and start throwing the the kitchen sink at this kind of thing and just go crazy.
- 7:16SPEAKER_03: Just just say if we don't go aggressive at this point, there's no chance we catch up.
- 7:21SPEAKER_03: I that it's just really frustrating.
- 7:23SPEAKER_03: It's like, why not change it?
- 7:24SPEAKER_03: Why I hate that we started conservative, but why stick to it?
- 7:28SPEAKER_03: It's just it's so head scratching, yeah.
- 7:31SPEAKER_04: And they they switched it up on offense.
- 7:33SPEAKER_04: We'll give them that.
- 7:34SPEAKER_04: Uh, you know, they started off very conservative and they uh didn't start off well, and then eventually, you know, we we uh kind of make good out of bad when UT uh has that bad play on four, has that penalty on fourth down.
- 7:49SPEAKER_04: Uh then we get a second chance at it.
- 7:51SPEAKER_04: We go down the field, Tyler Shuck goes and rushes in for a touchdown and makes it 14 to 7.
- 7:56SPEAKER_04: Unfortunately, we didn't know at the time that Tyler Shuck broke his collarbone on that play, on that dive.
- 8:02SPEAKER_04: But um, you know, so offense was kind of rolling with it, but if your defense doesn't stop anybody, there's just no chance.
- 8:09SPEAKER_04: And so I don't blame the offense really uh in this game at all.
- 8:14SPEAKER_04: Uh it's really it's really on on Keith Patterson in the defense for not showing up, for not getting off the bus and not giving effort and not making tackles and doing everything wrong.
- 8:25SPEAKER_03: A story we thought we should turn the page in in TechStech football was you know, just a pitiful defense where you're your good offense has zero chance to win the game.
- 8:34SPEAKER_03: It's just I thought we were past that point.
- 8:36SPEAKER_03: I thought we were done with the all we care about is offense mentality, and even if we're gonna go for that, all we want is offense mentality.
- 8:43SPEAKER_03: This the score didn't really reflect that either.
- 8:46SPEAKER_03: Um, but uh it's what more can you say than it was an absolute ass beating, you know.
- 8:50SPEAKER_03: We we got uh our asses beat, and I am very disappointed with the coaching staff in general, except for maybe save Sonny Company, as we were saying that the offensive uh output wasn't that terrible, but it's just this is the game you're hired for at Texas Tech University.
- 9:07SPEAKER_03: This is the most important single most important Saturday of the year for you, and that's the team, that's how you get the team ready to go.
- 9:15SPEAKER_03: That's what the players reflect on the field from your uh I don't know, maybe your locker locker room speech or your your your schemes that you drew up for it.
- 9:25SPEAKER_03: It's just really, really disappointed because if there's one way to get a Texas Tech fan base a turn on you, it's poor showings against UT.
- 9:33SPEAKER_03: Uh, there's no game we care about more on the schedule, no matter what.
- 9:37SPEAKER_03: And I just that's what hurts, you know.
- 9:39SPEAKER_03: Like you, you're you you you spend this money to go down to an uh you know the opposing rivals stadium and you watch your team just got absolutely clobbered.
- 9:47SPEAKER_03: And what are you supposed to say to the fans heckling you?
- 9:48SPEAKER_03: Yeah, like yeah, we we do suck, man.
- 9:50SPEAKER_03: This is not cool.
- 9:51SPEAKER_03: This it sucks, you know?
- 9:53SPEAKER_04: Yeah, and and I get what you're saying here with UT.
- 9:56SPEAKER_04: They're obviously uh, you know, the game we look forward to the most.
- 10:00SPEAKER_04: Um, I I think there's a little too much emphasis put on to the UT game.
- 10:06SPEAKER_04: Uh, they are the biggest rival.
- 10:08SPEAKER_04: We do want to beat them more than we want to beat anybody, but it is one game.
- 10:12SPEAKER_04: It's one game, and that's why after much reflection these last few days of after watching us get clobbered in Austin, seeing the overreactions of tech Twitter as they all flow in, uh, realizing that hey, we're three and one, we have eight games left this season, and I I know we have some injuries, and our starting quarterback is now out.
- 10:41SPEAKER_04: A lot doesn't look good, but it's really it's ridiculous to me to give up on a season so early.
- 10:49SPEAKER_04: Um, and I think that's what a lot of tech fans are so ready to do.
- 10:52SPEAKER_04: They're so done after seeing the last two seasons winning only four games with Matt Wells, not making bowl games, not really having anything good to root for for the most part.
- 11:04SPEAKER_04: Um and and I just think it's ridiculous.
- 11:07SPEAKER_04: Uh, a lot a lot of these overreactions, to be honest.
- 11:10SPEAKER_03: I think that you that's a very great grounded take to have on this.
- 11:14SPEAKER_03: And I I think I mostly agree with you.
- 11:15SPEAKER_03: I just think uh, you know, after being there live, it's just kind of tougher to get over it a little more whenever you have the distance, whenever you're watching it on TV.
- 11:22SPEAKER_03: I think it's a little easier, but you know, you know me I'm Mr.
- 11:25SPEAKER_03: Optimism.
- 11:25SPEAKER_03: I'm I'll be like, we'll beating, we're beating West Virginia this weekend.
- 11:28SPEAKER_03: But I think the reason why people are so quick to you know go ahead and cut bait on the season is it's easier that way.
- 11:37SPEAKER_03: It's it is it's it's easier to expect the worst now.
- 11:41SPEAKER_03: And the thing is, it's not unfounded either.
- 11:43SPEAKER_03: You know, tech fans haven't had a season the cheer for in ages, it's been a really long time, so it's it's a lot easier to just go ahead and cut cut bait, and then maybe you know, obviously that that's the natural progression to people want to look for another coach, and because that way you can it's easier to find optimism in a fresh system.
- 12:00SPEAKER_03: And I I I understand that thought process, but I'm with you, it's too early to go there.
- 12:05SPEAKER_03: Um, I just I think what exemplified that attitude was the performance on the field.
- 12:10SPEAKER_03: You don't you don't you don't go headfirst into these hot takes if if we lost uh a couple days ago 45 to 28, like it's not it's not the same thing, so it's just whenever whenever your biggest rival hangs 70 on you, a basketball score, it just it makes you feel like there's nothing to look forward to in that moment.
- 12:28SPEAKER_03: And I get that, but you're right, it's way too early.
- 12:32SPEAKER_04: There's eight games left.
- 12:33SPEAKER_04: Uh, if this happened in late November, I may have a different take on it.
- 12:37SPEAKER_04: But uh we were one conference game in and we're three and one.
- 12:41SPEAKER_04: We we are three and one.
- 12:43SPEAKER_04: You look at that record and you're like, that's you know, that's a pretty good record.
- 12:48SPEAKER_04: Uh, and obviously there's context behind that and everything, and we just got clobbered.
- 12:52SPEAKER_04: And I get all that.
- 12:53SPEAKER_04: I get being mad, I get being upset.
- 12:56SPEAKER_04: Where I think we go a little wrong is we take that to the next level and we say, Hey, fire everybody, get them out, get any everybody new, start all the freshmen.
- 13:06SPEAKER_04: Who cares at this point?
- 13:08SPEAKER_04: This season's a wash.
- 13:09SPEAKER_04: No, it's not, it's not a wash, not yet.
- 13:12SPEAKER_04: You gotta give it more time, you really do.
- 13:15SPEAKER_04: Um, and uh listen, I'm not like we've both said this before.
- 13:21SPEAKER_04: We're not necessarily pro Matt Wells, we're just pro Texas Tech, please succeed.
- 13:28SPEAKER_04: And with Matt Wells at the helm right now, we want him and Texas Tech to succeed.
- 13:35SPEAKER_04: If you are a fan that is rooting for losses at this point just to get Matt Wells out, you are not a fan, you're not a good fan, at least.
- 13:45SPEAKER_04: You know, you may as well just go root for Alabama, who wins all the time.
- 13:50SPEAKER_04: That you know, this is it's ridiculous to root for losses for your own team.
- 13:56SPEAKER_03: I could never imagine doing that.
- 13:58SPEAKER_03: I mean, I want to win every single game so bad.
- 14:00SPEAKER_03: I I I can't, even if I don't like the head coach, I I I feel like I would still be cheer, I would still be applauding the W's no matter what.
- 14:09SPEAKER_03: I think there's only a very few instances where you'd actually want an L.
- 14:13SPEAKER_03: And I'm I'm I'm thinking it's you gotta have a head coach like Art Bryals to go ahead and appoint to a hot take already.
- 14:21SPEAKER_03: Um, but uh that's uh Matt Wells is a good guy, like there's no there's no way, there's no reason to dislike the man Matt Wells, but I can understand why people are pissed off at the coach.
- 14:32SPEAKER_03: So are we, we're all pissed, but I'm not gonna cheer for him to lose just so he can be fired.
- 14:37SPEAKER_03: No, because what if he turns around and makes this a good season?
- 14:40SPEAKER_03: Suddenly we have a good coach.
- 14:41SPEAKER_03: Oh, winning cures everything.
- 14:43SPEAKER_03: This will this L just hurts a lot more than any other W's this season did for him.
- 14:49SPEAKER_04: Yeah, no, I agree a hundred percent.
- 14:51SPEAKER_04: We all want Texas Tech to sit to succeed, we all do.
- 14:55SPEAKER_04: Every single person in this fan base.
- 14:57SPEAKER_04: Some people have a different mindset of how we can get there quicker or how long it's going to take, all sorts of stuff.
- 15:05SPEAKER_04: But um, you know, I there's been a lot of people calling for his job after that game, and I can tell you one thing right now firing a coach midseason is never a good idea.
- 15:15SPEAKER_04: It just isn't.
- 15:16SPEAKER_04: It what what does that solve?
- 15:18SPEAKER_04: Does that that's if anything, that's gonna get players currently on this team to probably want to transfer out because you don't have a head coach now, and you're being coached by what would probably be Sonny Cumby taking over as whatever interim or whatever, it's never a good situation.
- 15:35SPEAKER_04: Ride it out with Matt Wells, no matter the circumstance.
- 15:38SPEAKER_04: And then at the very end of the season, you Kirby comes together and realizes what needs to be done needs to be done, and so give it time.
- 15:47SPEAKER_04: There's eight games left.
- 15:49SPEAKER_04: We could still make we can still make a bowl game and potentially win, you know, seven, eight games.
- 15:54SPEAKER_04: That's more on the positive side.
- 15:55SPEAKER_04: I understand that, but it you know, I just think the overreactions are intense after that game.
- 16:02SPEAKER_04: Uh, it was a bad loss, but it's not a loss that warrants all this overreaction.
- 16:07SPEAKER_03: I agree.
- 16:08SPEAKER_03: And I think firing Matt Wells mid-season only does more damage to your program.
- 16:14SPEAKER_03: I mean, what head coach wants to go into that situation?
- 16:16SPEAKER_03: Wow, they they fire their head coaches after three games, you know.
- 16:21SPEAKER_03: Like who who wants that?
- 16:22SPEAKER_03: I I no one does.
- 16:24SPEAKER_03: Um, and you you gotta give Matt Wells a chance to redeem himself.
- 16:27SPEAKER_03: It's only fair that he gets a whole season no matter what.
- 16:30SPEAKER_03: Um, so you gotta let him ride because this is shit, this is a ship that can totally be turned around since we're still in the early half of the season here.
- 16:37SPEAKER_03: Um, but it's just everyone just is very emotional right now.
- 16:41SPEAKER_03: Um, and he is the lightning rod, and he's paid very well to be said lightning rod.
- 16:47SPEAKER_03: So it's it's true.
- 16:49SPEAKER_03: He doesn't have the worst job in the world, even if he's fired.
- 16:52SPEAKER_03: So yeah, um, it's it's easy to rip on him.
- 16:55SPEAKER_03: But uh I'm with you, man.
- 16:56SPEAKER_03: I I think that's that's a hot take that should be you know thrown out the window.
- 17:01SPEAKER_03: I that does TechStech no good.
- 17:03SPEAKER_03: You have a long, long off season to look for a head coach, and I understand usually speed's usually part of it, so you can get recruits and stuff.
- 17:11SPEAKER_03: But you are you really worried about saving those extra two months by firing in mid mid-season?
- 17:16SPEAKER_04: The last thing I want to do is turn into what Florida State is right now or what Nebraska is right now.
- 17:22SPEAKER_04: That's the last thing I want to turn into.
- 17:24SPEAKER_04: It could be worse, perpetually losing with no real end in sight.
- 17:29SPEAKER_04: Okay.
- 17:30SPEAKER_04: Like, you know, you add those two.
- 17:32SPEAKER_04: I I think about last season and how we won four games.
- 17:35SPEAKER_04: We got two of our non-conference taken away from us.
- 17:38SPEAKER_04: We win those two non-conference games where you have a six-win team last year, and everybody's kind of less freaking out on Matt Wells.
- 17:44SPEAKER_04: You know, we have potential to win six, seven, potentially eight games this season.
- 17:50SPEAKER_04: I'm not saying that's gonna happen, I'm saying there's still potential for it.
- 17:54SPEAKER_04: And you know, I just I just think it's way too early on a lot of this stuff.
- 17:58SPEAKER_04: It would be so ridiculous to fire Matt Wells after that UT game.
- 18:02SPEAKER_04: Uh, and I'm glad we're not doing it, and I'm glad we're just rolling with it.
- 18:05SPEAKER_04: Uh, and you know, we'll see what happens.
- 18:07SPEAKER_03: Yeah, that's a good point to bring up a team to teams like Florida State and Nebraska peas.
- 18:11SPEAKER_03: Those two are powerhouses.
- 18:13SPEAKER_03: People expect them to be winning nearly 10 games every single year, and they might not even win three.
- 18:18SPEAKER_03: So there we already have three wins, we're in better shape than they are, and I don't want us, and we do not have the ability or at least the resources like they do to to pull ourselves out of a Kansas-like situation as easily as they do, and they're struggling really hard.
- 18:34SPEAKER_03: So we got to do our best to keep our heads above water in that sense.
- 18:37SPEAKER_03: Um, because even USC is doing really badly, and they just fired their head coach middle of the season.
- 18:42SPEAKER_03: So it's we do got to keep that perspective, um, and just just we got to be able to look past what's right in front of us and understand that what's best for Texas Tech is to keep cool heads for the most part.
- 18:55SPEAKER_03: So it's yeah, stay reserved for a while.
- 18:58SPEAKER_04: There's there's eight games left, my dudes.
- 19:01SPEAKER_04: Um, there was another there was another overreaction that I wanted to talk about because even we interacted over Twitter with with certain uh uh followers of the pod and everything like that.
- 19:12SPEAKER_04: Um basically uh new quarterback moving from from here on, Tyler Shuck is going to be out at least six weeks with the broken collarbone.
- 19:21SPEAKER_04: It looks like the earliest he will be back uh if he does come back at all this season would be the Iowa State game, which is late November.
- 19:29SPEAKER_04: So uh, you know that we're gonna be playing with a with a different starting quarterback for the foreseeable future.
- 19:35SPEAKER_04: And um right now that starting quarterback is Henry Columbi, as it should be.
- 19:41SPEAKER_04: Uh, the guy is experienced, the guy has been in the system now for uh two years, has a full off season under his belt, uh, played in some big moments, and won a game or two last season.
- 19:53SPEAKER_04: Um, you know, uh, and and there's so many people that just want to jump straight to the freshman, skip over Colombi, go start Donovan Smith or Baron Morton.
- 20:02SPEAKER_04: And to me, that is the wrong choice uh in in in a lot of ways.
- 20:10SPEAKER_04: I mean, I just don't think you throw out a freshman when he hasn't been getting first team reps at all his entire time at Texas Tech.
- 20:18SPEAKER_04: Um, he you're frankly behind a bad O-line.
- 20:22SPEAKER_04: Um, you know, you're throwing him into the middle of Big 12 play.
- 20:25SPEAKER_04: You don't give him any cupcakes.
- 20:26SPEAKER_04: I mean, maybe besides Kansas, there's no more cupcakes on this schedule.
- 20:30SPEAKER_04: Uh, so I just I just don't think you do that because that's a quick way to ruin a young guy's confidence.
- 20:39SPEAKER_03: No, I absolutely agree.
- 20:40SPEAKER_03: I think you gotta go with the the the X like a veteran plus because this is like his fifth year playing for Henry Columbia, and he's been with Matt Wells this whole time, so he's he knows how Matt Wells' uh offenses work.
- 20:53SPEAKER_03: Um, and you're right, like this.
- 20:56SPEAKER_03: We really want to throw these 18-year-old kids who just the last time they played a full game of football was in high school, and you want to put them up against the West Virginia team who has the best players from high school, you know, to two who could crack, you know.
- 21:07SPEAKER_03: Obviously, um in Morgantown, too.
- 21:10SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I mean either either rattle their confidence going forward or at or at worse, injure them going forward.
- 21:18SPEAKER_03: You know, it's just you you Henry Columbi seems fully capable and he seems like a leader.
- 21:23SPEAKER_03: Whenever I was listening to look listening to his presser, I liked what he said, and whenever I was watching the UT game, I liked what I saw.
- 21:29SPEAKER_03: The guy came into a boo-boo situation in that UT game.
- 21:33SPEAKER_03: We were already losing that game, yeah.
- 21:35SPEAKER_03: But he still went out there and put together some successful drives.
- 21:38SPEAKER_03: I like what I saw.
- 21:39SPEAKER_03: I'm not, I'm not, I'm not an anti Henry Columbi guy.
- 21:43SPEAKER_03: The reason why we we like Tyler Shuck more is because Tyler Shuck just seems to have the tangibles a little stronger.
- 21:48SPEAKER_03: But I definitely think Henry Columbi can can captain this team to you know some wins.
- 21:53SPEAKER_04: Think about Henry Columbi's entire career and tell me where you see where something should have gone differently.
- 22:00SPEAKER_04: Goes to Utah State, backs up NFL first round pick, Jordan Love.
- 22:05SPEAKER_04: So it's not like he was just a backup at a G5 program.
- 22:08SPEAKER_04: He was a backup behind a future NFL first round pick.
- 22:12SPEAKER_04: Transfers to Texas Tech, COVID hits.
- 22:16SPEAKER_04: You don't get any spring ball.
- 22:17SPEAKER_04: You don't get any acclamation with the team.
- 22:20SPEAKER_04: You're thrown into the fire after Alan Bowman gets hurt in your first season at Texas Tech.
- 22:24SPEAKER_04: You actually win a game or two and look pretty decent in some of those games, even when you're thrown in at the end of the Iowa State game last season, where you actually look pretty competent against a good Iowa State team.
- 22:34SPEAKER_04: And then now, new offensive coordinator, new system.
- 22:39SPEAKER_04: You're still with Matt Wells, though.
- 22:41SPEAKER_04: So there's still that continuity there.
- 22:43SPEAKER_04: But you know, you're coming in and you frankly you're behind Tyler Shuck, who before you know you get hurt, is an NFL prospect.
- 22:51SPEAKER_04: So there's no shame in Henry Columbi's entire career, his entire collegiate career here.
- 22:57SPEAKER_04: Um, and I think he is going to give you a much better chance at winning and salvaging some of this season with some wins and potentially a bowl game than if you threw in a freshman like Donovan Smith or Barron Morton.
- 23:11SPEAKER_04: It to that's just to me, that's just a fact.
- 23:14SPEAKER_03: Full agreement.
- 23:15SPEAKER_03: And what we've what have we been saying this whole podcast is that Harry Columbia is the ideal backup quarterback, and this is the ideal time for him to go in.
- 23:22SPEAKER_03: You know, now he's gonna have a full full uh week of practice to prepare for West Virginia.
- 23:27SPEAKER_03: Now he'll be treated as QB1 at practice, so he'll be much better prepared, he'll have the confidence of knowing he's QB1 for here on, um, going into these games.
- 23:36SPEAKER_03: And I do think he he brings a stable game so you can have a consistent offense on that field.
- 23:43SPEAKER_03: Um, I the way I look at Donovan Smith and Baron Morton is I see the future of the Texas Tech offense.
- 23:48SPEAKER_03: I do not see the present Texas Tech offense.
- 23:51SPEAKER_03: They are tomorrow's game, they're for next season, and and so on.
- 23:54SPEAKER_03: I think right now I think I feel much more confident with Henry Columbi leading this team than I would anybody else besides Tyler Shuck, of course.
- 24:01SPEAKER_04: Yeah, absolutely.
- 24:02SPEAKER_04: And I think that's the way you move forward.
- 24:03SPEAKER_04: Um, you know, that could obviously change if if Henry Columbi does not play up the par these next few games and we continue continue to lose, then you think about playing some of these other games.
- 24:15SPEAKER_04: But as for right now, he is obviously the choice to go with in my eyes.
- 24:20SPEAKER_04: Uh and and a guy that Matt Wells does like.
- 24:23SPEAKER_04: I mean, he's always liked Henry Columbi.
- 24:25SPEAKER_04: He he it was a QB battle, quote unquote.
- 24:29SPEAKER_04: We all knew Tyler Shuck was going to get the job, but he still felt it necessary to keep Henry Columbi in the fight because he knows what he can do for him and his program.
- 24:39SPEAKER_04: So, you know, trusting Matt Wells with that decision, it's not my favorite thing to do right now, but it's it to me, this is the decision we need to make.
- 24:47SPEAKER_04: Bro, this is a Hollywood Henry podcast.
- 24:51SPEAKER_04: Pro Hollywood Henry.
- 24:53SPEAKER_04: Uh, I actually he looked good in the UT game.
- 24:56SPEAKER_04: I think you know, you can you can cherry pick stats, but I think PFF put out like their top five quarterback performances by their metrics.
- 25:04SPEAKER_04: And Henry Columbia was like third in all of college football last week.
- 25:09SPEAKER_04: So, you know, I and that's that's obviously, you know, coming in weird game craziness, but uh I I really think the guy has a chance to be successful and win us a few games.
- 25:20SPEAKER_04: Do we have a top?
- 25:21SPEAKER_04: Do we have a higher ceiling with Tyler Shuck?
- 25:23SPEAKER_04: Yes, absolutely.
- 25:25SPEAKER_04: But uh, you know, can we still salvage a few wins and make a bowl game this year with Henry Columbia?
- 25:30SPEAKER_04: Absolutely.
- 25:31SPEAKER_03: It's a funny thing with backup quarterbacks, they're they're the most beloved player on the team, and they're like the most hated player on the team, you know.
- 25:38SPEAKER_03: Yeah, because you know, whenever the QB1's playing bad, everyone thinks that the second player is much better for whatever reason.
- 25:43SPEAKER_03: And then uh once they put the other one in, they get frustrated the starters not playing.
- 25:47SPEAKER_03: But um, yeah, I do I do like him.
- 25:49SPEAKER_03: I he like I've always said he's an ideal quarterback, and I do feel confident about going to Morgantown with him.
- 25:54SPEAKER_03: I really I don't feel really much different than I would if Tyler Shuck was going to Morgantown right now.
- 25:59SPEAKER_03: I really I really don't, like in my confidence of how the game goes.
- 26:03SPEAKER_04: Yeah, the the offense isn't what I'm worried about at this point.
- 26:06SPEAKER_04: Yeah, it's uh it's it's the terrible, the terrible other side of the ball that we saw uh quote unquote play a game last week uh against the Longhorns.
- 26:17SPEAKER_03: Well, and the two most important stats going into this next weekend are Matt Wells is undefeated against West Virginia, and Henry Colombi is undefeated against West Virginia.
- 26:27SPEAKER_03: So I don't know what other statistics you need going.
- 26:30SPEAKER_04: Those are the only two I need.
- 26:32SPEAKER_04: I can tell you that already.
- 26:35SPEAKER_04: But yeah, you're right.
- 26:36SPEAKER_04: And we're gonna talk about West Virginia here uh at the end after we talk about a few more things.
- 26:40SPEAKER_04: But I I did want to touch on uh the injuries, obviously.
- 26:44SPEAKER_04: Tyler Shuck, the big one, but also uh Muddy Waters got hurt that game too, was taken out, I believe, pretty early on in the game.
- 26:51SPEAKER_04: I think his eight, the eighth or ninth play of the game, he got hit uh by B.
- 26:55SPEAKER_04: John Robinson.
- 26:56SPEAKER_04: His arm was kind of in a sling there uh on the sideline.
- 26:59SPEAKER_04: So Matt Wells says he's day-to-day.
- 27:02SPEAKER_04: Matt Wells says that about literally everybody.
- 27:04SPEAKER_04: So uh who really knows how long he's gonna be out.
- 27:07SPEAKER_04: Uh, same thing with Demarcus Fields, suffered an injury kind of later in the Texas game.
- 27:12SPEAKER_04: Uh, so he's also day-to-day.
- 27:14SPEAKER_04: So again, we don't really know.
- 27:16SPEAKER_04: Uh, and then the the more surprising thing was right before the game, Taj Brooks was uh uh scratched from the lineup uh due to a lower leg injury.
- 27:26SPEAKER_04: Um that was kind of out of the blue.
- 27:28SPEAKER_04: Apparently, he suffered it early on in the week in practice and uh just couldn't couldn't play.
- 27:34SPEAKER_04: So uh, you know, uh again with the offense, you know, I thought Sir Rodrick did fine uh in the UT game.
- 27:40SPEAKER_04: I thought Xavier White did all right, uh, but it just wasn't the offense, it wasn't the issue.
- 27:45SPEAKER_04: The issue was the defense and losing a guy like Muddy Waters and DeMarcus Fields would only hurt that.
- 27:50SPEAKER_04: So uh really a lot of it was an effort issue.
- 27:54SPEAKER_04: I think a lot of it we just didn't get up for this UT game.
- 27:58SPEAKER_04: Uh I don't think we're that bad defensively.
- 28:01SPEAKER_04: I also don't think we're, you know, I was thinking about this earlier and I was like, we're not as good as the three and oh start, but we're not as bad as what we put out on the field against UT.
- 28:11SPEAKER_04: We aren't.
- 28:11SPEAKER_04: We're somewhere in the middle there, and hopefully we're kind of more towards the three and oh start, and we just really had a really bad game, a fluke of a game against UT.
- 28:20SPEAKER_04: I'm hoping that's the case.
- 28:22SPEAKER_04: Uh, but we'll just have to see.
- 28:25SPEAKER_03: That's an ideal way to look at it, man.
- 28:26SPEAKER_03: I think that's probably the best little snippet you could take from this podcast.
- 28:30SPEAKER_03: Um, and you said it before we started the pod that you know defensively in this game, everything that went wrong did.
- 28:35SPEAKER_03: And even when you whenever you talk about the uh getting uh our our boy Muddy Waters getting hurt, that just puts a chariot on top of that statement.
- 28:42SPEAKER_03: Um, because he's one of our one of your best defensive players on the whole field.
- 28:46SPEAKER_03: So that's just really frustrating, uh, especially for him, because you know how badly he would want to be out there, um, especially during a performance like that.
- 28:54SPEAKER_03: Uh, but it's just a game to forget, especially for our players.
- 28:58SPEAKER_03: Um, so it's just we gotta we gotta dust ourselves off and move on.
- 29:02SPEAKER_03: I know it's gonna sting for a bit, but as soon as we win the next game, we're gonna forget about it.
- 29:07SPEAKER_04: Exactly.
- 29:07SPEAKER_04: If we go into Morgantown and win that game, everybody forgets about everything, and then we're all happy, you know, four-and-one Texas tech, hopefully.
- 29:14SPEAKER_04: But uh, you know, we'll we'll we'll have to see about that.
- 29:17SPEAKER_04: Uh, I'm not saying anything's gonna happen.
- 29:19SPEAKER_04: We'll talk about West Virginia here in a second, but let's talk about some of the other Big 12 games that happened this week.
- 29:24SPEAKER_04: Uh, just a precursor.
- 29:26SPEAKER_04: Both me and Tristan were very depressed on Saturday.
- 29:29SPEAKER_04: After that game, we decided to watch no college football because why would you want to after you just got throttled by your biggest rival?
- 29:36SPEAKER_04: So uh, you know, I'm only taking what I saw from other fans on Twitter and kind of some highlights that I saw here or there.
- 29:43SPEAKER_04: But let's start with Baylor.
- 29:44SPEAKER_04: Big win for the Bears.
- 29:46SPEAKER_04: They start 4-0 this season, defeating Iowa State in it, it's in Waco, I believe.
- 29:52SPEAKER_04: Uh, so you know, they they won 31 to 29.
- 29:55SPEAKER_04: Apparently, this was a game of special teams mistakes by Iowa State.
- 30:00SPEAKER_04: Um, Baylor looks pretty good.
- 30:02SPEAKER_04: I'm not trying to take anything away from Baylor.
- 30:05SPEAKER_04: Solid offense, solid defense, but it was the special teams mistakes by Iowa State.
- 30:10SPEAKER_04: I think they gave up like 12 total points if you counted up all the mistakes uh that really would have given him the game.
- 30:16SPEAKER_04: But credit to Baylor, credit to Dave Aranda for pulling out a big one against the number 14 Cyclones.
- 30:22SPEAKER_03: Yeah, that that's a ghost that's been haunting Iowa State lately.
- 30:24SPEAKER_03: Is definitely the special teams mistakes, it's been like that for a while now.
- 30:28SPEAKER_03: Um, man, you you're you must be some sort of psychic because you saw this.
- 30:33SPEAKER_03: You saw Iowa State was not gonna live up to the hype.
- 30:37SPEAKER_03: Um, and it's I guess we've all been a little unfair to Baylor as well.
- 30:40SPEAKER_03: I mean, you don't you don't just win in big games like that on flukes alone.
- 30:44SPEAKER_03: So definitely props to them.
- 30:45SPEAKER_03: They're definitely a scarier team on the schedule at this point.
- 30:48SPEAKER_03: I was I was thinking they weren't gonna be that great either because I thought they're still going through some growing pains with a new coach, but apparently Dave Aranda has got them up, and uh they're definitely not gonna be a team anybody's gonna overlook anymore.
- 30:58SPEAKER_04: Yeah, absolutely.
- 30:59SPEAKER_04: Now people are gonna actually start bringing it to Baylor now, uh, when otherwise they may not have uh earlier in the season, but they're unfeated, man.
- 31:06SPEAKER_04: That's that says a lot, and and getting a win against a ranked opponent, uh that's big time.
- 31:11SPEAKER_04: I I did see a stat that Dave Aranda now has more ranked wins at Baylor than Matt Rule did, which is wild.
- 31:19SPEAKER_04: That's nuts.
- 31:20SPEAKER_04: I don't think awesome.
- 31:21SPEAKER_04: I Matt Rule was awesome, but I guess he just every time he played a team, they just weren't they didn't have it to be ranked.
- 31:27SPEAKER_04: I don't know, man.
- 31:28SPEAKER_04: But uh that was a wild stat to see.
- 31:30SPEAKER_04: Uh you know that good for good for Baylor starting off the season pretty solid.
- 31:36SPEAKER_04: Uh, but let's move on uh to the biggest game of the week, in my opinion, Kansas falling to the Duke Blue Devils uh 52 to 33.
- 31:47SPEAKER_04: Um your Jayhawks, man.
- 31:50SPEAKER_04: They're just they're just not doing well.
- 31:52SPEAKER_03: Man, it's just I I said that if it's gonna be an offensive shootout, my Jayhawks don't have a chance.
- 31:58SPEAKER_03: We win games in the trenches, not in the air.
- 32:01SPEAKER_03: So it was frustrating to see the the end results of the Duke Dukers just slinging it on the Jayhawks, but it's it's disappointing, nevertheless.
- 32:11SPEAKER_04: The Duke Dukers took them down.
- 32:14SPEAKER_04: Uh apparently Duke has had kind of uh a little revival.
- 32:20SPEAKER_04: Uh, they started off awful and then you know they won a game or two, and now they're back up to you know, at least serviceable.
- 32:27SPEAKER_04: And Kansas, of course, is not.
- 32:30SPEAKER_04: So that's just it is what it is.
- 32:32SPEAKER_04: Kansas, keep doing your thing.
- 32:34SPEAKER_04: Hopefully, you pull out an upset here this season, make your fans a little happy.
- 32:37SPEAKER_04: Storm the field again, maybe.
- 32:40SPEAKER_04: But uh, yeah, not much to go on with that game.
- 32:42SPEAKER_04: Uh, this was a game that was that was uh kind of I wouldn't say blew my mind, but uh definitely something I didn't see coming.
- 32:50SPEAKER_04: Kansas State falling to Oklahoma State 31 to 20.
- 32:54SPEAKER_04: Oklahoma State remains undefeated on the season.
- 32:57SPEAKER_04: Uh, and they beat a Kansas State team, of course, without Skylar Thompson.
- 33:01SPEAKER_04: Uh Will Howard was again their starting quarterback, but uh, you know, there was a lot of hype for Kansas State.
- 33:07SPEAKER_04: Some people were calling them the third best team in the Big 12 going into this game, and uh Oklahoma State took care of business.
- 33:13SPEAKER_03: I was begging for this to be the one year.
- 33:15SPEAKER_03: Oklahoma State wasn't that good, but they I guess just houdinied us through their first three games because I mean beating Kansas State, Kansas State looks real solid.
- 33:23SPEAKER_03: So that was that was a that's a big win for the Pokes.
- 33:26SPEAKER_03: So suddenly uh the games here start thinking that maybe tech can really get that one.
- 33:31SPEAKER_03: They they become 50-50s once more, um, at best.
- 33:34SPEAKER_03: So, but um, I'm I guess we just gotta see how things unfold.
- 33:38SPEAKER_04: Yeah, no doubt.
- 33:39SPEAKER_04: I mean, uh, again, we didn't watch this game.
- 33:41SPEAKER_04: I didn't even know the score of this until I wrote it down about 45 minutes ago.
- 33:45SPEAKER_04: So uh, you know, that I guess Spencer Sanders pulls out another one and and old Mike Gundy keeps it rolling.
- 33:51SPEAKER_04: Uh, but another interesting game moving on to Oklahoma barely edging out.
- 33:57SPEAKER_04: Uh, the Mountaineers of West Virginia 16 to 13.
- 34:01SPEAKER_04: Is this Big Ten football?
- 34:03SPEAKER_04: What's happening here?
- 34:04SPEAKER_03: This was a really controversial game.
- 34:06SPEAKER_03: Apparently, I hear the OU fans had a lot to say uh at aim.
- 34:10SPEAKER_04: So uh booing their quarterback and uh you know, yeah, it's just uh well we we know one thing about Oklahoma Sooner football fans is that they're very you know level-headed, they don't think anything highly of themselves at all.
- 34:24SPEAKER_04: It's true.
- 34:25SPEAKER_04: So yeah, I did see that.
- 34:26SPEAKER_04: I did see they were booing uh Spencer Rattler.
- 34:29SPEAKER_03: How dare OU play a close game with a conference opponent?
- 34:32SPEAKER_03: Lincoln Riley is done, done done.
- 34:35SPEAKER_03: Not my coach.
- 34:37SPEAKER_03: Geez, no, no way.
- 34:38SPEAKER_03: No, no coach of mine plays close games.
- 34:41SPEAKER_04: No, no, especially after we haven't won 50 straight Big 12 championships, whatever the hell they've done.
- 34:49SPEAKER_04: But uh, yeah, this is a tight one.
- 34:50SPEAKER_04: OU looks beatable.
- 34:52SPEAKER_04: I mean, to say the least, West Virginia, uh, their defense has shown up and been really good this year.
- 34:57SPEAKER_04: Their offense, I'm still skeptical on, and we'll talk about that in the preview.
- 35:01SPEAKER_04: But uh, you know, solid, solid close loss for the Mountaineers.
- 35:05SPEAKER_04: It's still a loss.
- 35:07SPEAKER_04: OU still pulling out the win here, but uh, you know, you you got to think OU's more beatable.
- 35:12SPEAKER_03: Yeah, you definitely OU definitely sees a schedule full of traps now.
- 35:16SPEAKER_03: And if I'm a Mountaineer fan, I'm pumped.
- 35:17SPEAKER_03: I'm I would be amped if that was the tech score against OU, honestly.
- 35:21SPEAKER_03: I guess I think I just I think you showed some real improvement after years of just bidded absolutely clobbered by OU.
- 35:28SPEAKER_03: Um, but it's it's uh I mean we have to play that team, dang it.
- 35:33SPEAKER_03: So that's coming up, but uh um yeah, OU definitely looks be beatable.
- 35:37SPEAKER_03: Definitely a team on the schedule will do it.
- 35:39SPEAKER_04: Yeah, so I I mean if anything that we've noticed from the Big 12 play this year, it's that the top dogs are not as crazy good as we thought they would be in OU and Iowa State.
- 35:50SPEAKER_04: Uh Texas obviously looks better, but you know, the mid-tier teams are kind of looking like what we thought, maybe moving up a little bit, maybe being a little better than what we thought.
- 35:58SPEAKER_04: So uh this West Virginia game is going to tell us a lot.
- 36:01SPEAKER_04: But to the final of the current Big 12 games, TCU taking an L to the Mustangs of SMU.
- 36:09SPEAKER_04: They lose uh their little rivalry they got going on.
- 36:12SPEAKER_04: Dallas wins in the battle of Dallas versus Ford Worth this game.
- 36:16SPEAKER_04: TCU losing 42 to 34.
- 36:19SPEAKER_04: This is a this is a big one.
- 36:21SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah.
- 36:21SPEAKER_03: I mean, TCU has been a victim of hype this whole season.
- 36:24SPEAKER_03: I mean, people love them some Gary Patterson in the preseason.
- 36:27SPEAKER_03: Um, this is obviously a game you don't want to lose as a TCU fan to a G5 rival across town.
- 36:33SPEAKER_03: Um, but as Sonny Sonny Dykes is uh SMU has got a good year ahead of them, they look like a really great team.
- 36:39SPEAKER_03: Uh they're definitely they I could definitely see them as American favorites uh right now.
- 36:43SPEAKER_03: Um, but it's that's not a good look for G Pet in the TCU Horprogs.
- 36:48SPEAKER_03: So maybe they're not who people thought they were going to be.
- 36:51SPEAKER_03: People were calling them to be at least in the top four of the Big 12 and maybe making a run at the championship.
- 36:56SPEAKER_03: So another team that looks beatable, man.
- 36:58SPEAKER_03: Like is we have them in two weeks, and I'm going to that game, so I don't want to be depressed.
- 37:06SPEAKER_04: No depression like uh like you were last weekend.
- 37:09SPEAKER_04: But uh yeah, and SMU does have former OU quarterback Tanier Tanner Mordecai, who backed up uh, I believe Jalen Hurts.
- 37:18SPEAKER_04: It could have been somebody else, but one of those good OU quarterbacks.
- 37:22SPEAKER_04: He was he, I mean, he was good enough for OU to recruit him and for Lincoln Riley to see something.
- 37:26SPEAKER_04: So, you know, that's that's a good thing in and of itself.
- 37:28SPEAKER_04: So SMU could have a very good year.
- 37:31SPEAKER_04: Um, but uh yeah, moving on to the future conference opponents that we will have.
- 37:37SPEAKER_04: Uh BYU defeating South Florida 35 to 27.
- 37:42SPEAKER_04: Not as impressive of a game as BYU has shown previously, uh, but still a win.
- 37:47SPEAKER_04: They're still undefeated.
- 37:48SPEAKER_04: BYU still kicking butt.
- 37:49SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I mean a win is a win whenever you're undefeated like that.
- 37:52SPEAKER_03: So I I mean it's it's it's party time in in Mormonville over there right now.
- 37:57SPEAKER_03: They I don't know how many cases of Diet Coke they've gone through.
- 38:00SPEAKER_03: They'll take it any of it right now.
- 38:02SPEAKER_04: How do I get an invite to Mormonville?
- 38:04SPEAKER_04: The Mormonville party.
- 38:05SPEAKER_03: Is that do I have to I I I think you know we'll have to we'll have to scout it out in Provo.
- 38:11SPEAKER_03: Well they'll probably be like, wow, we we're so happy or excited to hear the good news.
- 38:15SPEAKER_03: It's probably how it's gonna start.
- 38:16SPEAKER_04: So we are we are absolutely going to Provo one of these years.
- 38:20SPEAKER_04: So one of one of these times, one of these times we have to make it out there, but um the only other game from the four teams that are coming into the Big 12 was Houston defeating Navy 28 to 20.
- 38:31SPEAKER_04: Uh, Navy is not good this year, so that you know, only only an eight-point win against Navy isn't fantastic for the Houston Cougs.
- 38:39SPEAKER_04: But you know, uh again, undefeated since the tech game, you know, making that win look a little better, I guess.
- 38:45SPEAKER_04: If you're only beating a bad Navy team by eight, but still undefeated.
- 38:49SPEAKER_04: They're now three and one.
- 38:50SPEAKER_03: Yeah, please keep our U of H win the most impressive one so far, please.
- 38:54SPEAKER_04: Yeah, please.
- 38:55SPEAKER_04: I I I'm rooting for Houston.
- 38:56SPEAKER_04: I want them to keep doing good so that makes our win look a little better.
- 39:00SPEAKER_04: But uh, yeah, Cincinnati had a bye and UCF also had a buy, so uh, can't really talk about those.
- 39:06SPEAKER_04: Uh, it does stink to have a bye this early in the season, it really does.
- 39:09SPEAKER_04: I can't like why three three games in that stinks.
- 39:12SPEAKER_03: This some teams haven't even started conference play yet, and you're doing a bye.
- 39:16SPEAKER_04: Yeah, but that's it, man.
- 39:18SPEAKER_04: That that's the first this was the first week of true Big 12 play.
- 39:22SPEAKER_04: I know Baylor in Kansas played last week, but uh this is where you know every team's really played a conference game except for I think TCU at this point.
- 39:29SPEAKER_04: So um, man, uh we'll see moving forward.
- 39:32SPEAKER_04: It's it's hard to judge after one week of conference play, but uh, you know, some teams showed out and others, including our own, did not.
- 39:39SPEAKER_04: So uh moving on to next week.
- 39:41SPEAKER_03: Yeah, it's gonna be a crazier than normal in the Big 12 because it definitely we definitely might get a different Big 12 champion than OU.
- 39:47SPEAKER_03: We really might.
- 39:48SPEAKER_03: So it's it's gonna be interesting to watch.
- 39:49SPEAKER_03: Me too, man.
- 39:50SPEAKER_03: Jeez.
- 39:50SPEAKER_03: I hope as long as it's not UT.
- 39:53SPEAKER_04: Oh god, don't don't put that evil on me, Ricky Bobby.
- 39:56SPEAKER_04: Don't you do it.
- 39:58SPEAKER_04: But uh yeah, that's it for around the Big 12.
- 40:00SPEAKER_04: We're gonna get now into the talk and tech breakdown, and then right after that, we're gonna preview some West Virginia, give some songs of the week and get y'all out of here.
- 40:07SPEAKER_04: But uh, let's talk about the talk and tech breakdown, talk about some other sports on campus, what's going on with them?
- 40:13SPEAKER_04: Soccer.
- 40:14SPEAKER_04: We have always been a soccer school.
- 40:16SPEAKER_04: Texas Tech has been killing it in soccer to start the year.
- 40:21SPEAKER_04: Uh, we had conference play take place this last week.
- 40:24SPEAKER_04: We defeated the Sooners of Oklahoma.
- 40:27SPEAKER_03: Yes, defeated.
- 40:28SPEAKER_04: Seven to nothing.
- 40:30SPEAKER_04: We beat OU.
- 40:32SPEAKER_04: That is ridiculous.
- 40:33SPEAKER_04: That's an outrageous soccer score.
- 40:36SPEAKER_03: I like how you said defeated.
- 40:37SPEAKER_03: Yes, that's the that's the that's the adjective I would use as well, or verb.
- 40:41SPEAKER_03: Is it's I would say I would say yes, a throttled one, maybe clobbered, maybe obliterated, there maybe pooped on.
- 40:48SPEAKER_03: I would I would go with something like I would go along the lines of something like that.
- 40:53SPEAKER_03: More than just oh well, the the road raiders uh managed to win over managed to squeeze one out over OU seven-nothing.
- 41:01SPEAKER_04: But uh yeah, let's go, ladies.
- 41:03SPEAKER_04: Hat trick for Chris Kirsten Davis.
- 41:05SPEAKER_04: She's fantastic.
- 41:06SPEAKER_04: Uh, she's unbelievable.
- 41:07SPEAKER_04: She scored her 100th career goal at Texas Tech in this game.
- 41:12SPEAKER_04: Uh, she did have three of them, so you know, uh big time.
- 41:15SPEAKER_04: And uh everybody, everybody was fantastic this game.
- 41:18SPEAKER_04: I don't know how good OU is, but uh beating a team 7-0 and a team like OU, who should probably have a pretty decent soccer team, uh, you know, that's that's awesome for the ladies.
- 41:27SPEAKER_03: It's a bonker score.
- 41:28SPEAKER_03: We obviously have a lot of skill on this team.
- 41:30SPEAKER_03: Excited to see how we do further in the into the into the weeds here.
- 41:33SPEAKER_04: No doubt.
- 41:34SPEAKER_04: We did also pick up a win against Kansas State 2-0.
- 41:37SPEAKER_04: And the thing to notice here is uh we're not letting teams score on us.
- 41:41SPEAKER_04: I mean, these team these games are ending zero.
- 41:44SPEAKER_04: These teams are scoring no points against our team.
- 41:46SPEAKER_04: So shouts out to our defense.
- 41:48SPEAKER_04: I'm sure they don't get the credit that they deserve.
- 41:50SPEAKER_04: Everybody looks at who scores the goals, but this defense is kicking butt.
- 41:54SPEAKER_04: Uh, also in this game, goals were by Kirsten Davis and Ashley Williams, both of them having fantastic seasons so far.
- 42:00SPEAKER_03: So 2-0 in conference play, then, huh?
- 42:02SPEAKER_03: So awesome.
- 42:03SPEAKER_03: Love to see the defense carrying that.
- 42:04SPEAKER_03: And obviously, we got some offensive power power too.
- 42:07SPEAKER_03: So we got a lot to look forward to on the soccer pitch.
- 42:09SPEAKER_04: Absolutely.
- 42:10SPEAKER_04: And up next, we have a game at Baylor on the 30th of September at 7 p.m.
- 42:15SPEAKER_04: And then we go to Austin, play the Longhorns again uh on the 3rd of October at 1 p.m.
- 42:22SPEAKER_04: So if you have some time on those days, check it out.
- 42:24SPEAKER_04: I'm sure it's going to be on ESPN Plus.
- 42:26SPEAKER_04: Uh, and you know, keep rooting on our ladies for another good season for to continue this good season, you know.
- 42:32SPEAKER_04: Absolutely.
- 42:32SPEAKER_04: Yeah, let's move on.
- 42:33SPEAKER_04: Uh, volleyball drops a couple heartbreakers to Kansas to start off conference play.
- 42:38SPEAKER_04: Uh both matches went to the fifth set, but tech could not pull them out in either one.
- 42:43SPEAKER_04: Uh, so you know, not the not a good start to conference play for volleyball.
- 42:47SPEAKER_04: But uh next up, we have a two-match series at Baylor in Waco on uh on the first and the second of October.
- 42:54SPEAKER_04: Both of them are at 6 p.m.
- 42:56SPEAKER_03: Still plenty of season left.
- 42:58SPEAKER_03: I mean disappointing, but we we knew this team would have some growing play pains.
- 43:01SPEAKER_03: You know, we didn't have a great season last year.
- 43:03SPEAKER_03: You can't exactly do a 180 uh a lot a lot of the time.
- 43:06SPEAKER_03: So we just look for some progression here.
- 43:09SPEAKER_04: Yeah, absolutely.
- 43:10SPEAKER_04: Keep rooting for them.
- 43:11SPEAKER_04: So uh men's golf, ranked number nine in the bushnell slash golf week coaches poll.
- 43:18SPEAKER_04: Uh they finished fourth in the uh I don't know what I was trying to write down here, but uh they finished fourth in a in an invitational.
- 43:28SPEAKER_04: Sorry, I don't have the name of that invitational, but uh up next they are playing in the Blessings Collegiate Invitational in Fayetteville, Arkansas on the fourth through the sixth.
- 43:39SPEAKER_04: So shouts out men's golf.
- 43:41SPEAKER_03: Look, if we didn't know it before, we know it now.
- 43:44SPEAKER_03: We are 1000% a soccer and golf school.
- 43:48SPEAKER_03: No one can ever tell me otherwise.
- 43:51SPEAKER_04: Always have been.
- 43:52SPEAKER_04: We never haven't that way.
- 43:53SPEAKER_04: I don't remember a time where we were bad at soccer or golf, so you know I Oh, there's so much pain.
- 44:02SPEAKER_04: Sports! Sports! Okay, let's let's finish off with women's golf.
- 44:09SPEAKER_04: Um, finished seventh in the Mercedes-Benz Invitational, so not the best uh a finish for the for the ladies, but up next, they are also playing in the Blessings Collegiate in Fayetteville.
- 44:19SPEAKER_04: So uh keep it up.
- 44:20SPEAKER_04: We were we were pretty highly touted going into the year, so hopefully we kind of get back into the flow of that.
- 44:25SPEAKER_03: Ladies, golf school.
- 44:27SPEAKER_03: Come on, we got a title to keep up.
- 44:29SPEAKER_03: Let's go.
- 44:30SPEAKER_04: Exactly.
- 44:31SPEAKER_04: We have uh the known prestige of Texas Tech Golf that I really don't know anything about, but yeah, golf and soccer school.
- 44:40SPEAKER_04: So that's it.
- 44:41SPEAKER_04: That's it for the talk of tech breakdown.
- 44:43SPEAKER_04: Always support the smaller sports at the university if you can.
- 44:47SPEAKER_04: Uh let's finish it off here.
- 44:48SPEAKER_04: West Virginia preview.
- 44:50SPEAKER_04: We're talking Mountaineers, Texas Tech, Saturday, October 2nd, 2:30 p.m.
- 44:56SPEAKER_04: on ESPN2, Milan Pusker Stadium, Morgantown, West Virginia.
- 45:01SPEAKER_04: West Virginia opens up as seven-point favorites as they should.
- 45:04SPEAKER_04: I'm surprised it's not a little higher, to be honest, after both performances last week.
- 45:09SPEAKER_04: But um, man, what do you what do you think of West Virginia?
- 45:12SPEAKER_03: I mean, dude, this is the the coveted battle for the John Denver guitar.
- 45:15SPEAKER_03: I mean, this is where we got to pull out all the stops here.
- 45:18SPEAKER_03: Um, you know, West Virginia has been kind of hard to judge.
- 45:21SPEAKER_03: You know, they they had a poor showing against Maryland to start out the season, but it was game one, and I think they played it in Maryland, and it's a P5 team.
- 45:29SPEAKER_03: There's not a whole lot of shame in dropping an early game like that.
- 45:32SPEAKER_03: Um, and then they turn around, crush FCS, and then upset Virginia Tech in impressive fashion, and now they bring it to OU.
- 45:40SPEAKER_03: OE, I mean, West Virginia might be kind of sneaky good, so it's it looks like they're at least solid as heck.
- 45:46SPEAKER_03: So um it but where they seem to struggle is maybe why that the line isn't a little greater than it is, is it doesn't look like they can bring a ton of firepower to the table offensively, um, especially because of the quarterback.
- 46:00SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I mean, uh, if you've been listening to the spot for a while, we are not big on Jared Dagey.
- 46:05SPEAKER_04: We think he, or at least me, I do not think Jared Dagey is that good of a quarterback.
- 46:10SPEAKER_04: I think he makes mistakes, I think he cannot run, he can't get away from any pressure.
- 46:15SPEAKER_04: Uh so yeah, I don't I don't believe in Jared Dagey.
- 46:17SPEAKER_04: I think you need to attack him.
- 46:19SPEAKER_04: Like we should have attacked Casey Thompson, get guys to them, rush more than three guys, Keith Patterson.
- 46:25SPEAKER_04: Let's try that.
- 46:26SPEAKER_04: Let's try getting some guys in Jared Dagey's grill because literally any quarterback can do well when he's not pressured at all.
- 46:33SPEAKER_03: I'm sorry, who's Jared Dagey?
- 46:36SPEAKER_03: All I know is worse daggy.
- 46:37SPEAKER_04: Are you talking about worse daggy right now?
- 46:39SPEAKER_04: I'm talking, of course, about worse daggy.
- 46:42SPEAKER_03: Um, okay.
- 46:44SPEAKER_03: Yeah, did you know?
- 46:45SPEAKER_04: Okay, did you know that his older brother something?
- 46:47SPEAKER_04: Well, did you know that is a fun fact here for all the people out there?
- 46:51SPEAKER_04: Um, Jarrett has a brother named Seth, and Seth played a Texas Tech.
- 46:55SPEAKER_03: That's better, Daey.
- 46:57SPEAKER_04: That's better Daggy.
- 46:58SPEAKER_04: Yeah, it's it's no longer Seth and Jarrett.
- 47:01SPEAKER_04: It's better and worse Daggy.
- 47:03SPEAKER_03: We should do uh we should this week we should do something fun for the for the pod and the listeners.
- 47:08SPEAKER_03: Is we should before the game, we should take uh bets on how many times ESPN brings that up.
- 47:12SPEAKER_04: Over under over under at least 25, and that's that's like there's no i think it's going to be upwards of like well, uh 25 may be excessive.
- 47:25SPEAKER_04: Realistically, they're probably gonna bring it up like 15 times, which is still way too much.
- 47:29SPEAKER_03: Wow, you're going really high.
- 47:31SPEAKER_03: I was thinking at least once a quarter, but okay, you know, okay, you know, I guess I'm going really conservative on that line, but that's gonna be a very important bet to make in a bit.
- 47:40SPEAKER_03: Um, I'm sure all you uh uh gamblers out there are into that one for sure.
- 47:45SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I'm sure there's a prop bet out there about uh how many, how many Davey mentions we get this game.
- 47:50SPEAKER_04: But uh yeah, I mean back to the back to the actual teams.
- 47:55SPEAKER_04: West Virginia, like you said, has been a little up and down this year to start off.
- 47:58SPEAKER_04: Um, you know, dropping one to a Maryland team that's not fantastic, but then playing solid these last couple weeks, beating a good Virginia Tech team and then playing it really tight with an OU team, who is always good.
- 48:12SPEAKER_04: So um kind of the history, Matt Wells, like we mentioned, is undefeated against West Virginia.
- 48:18SPEAKER_04: He has not lost to the Mountaineers since he has become a coach at Texas Tech.
- 48:23SPEAKER_04: Uh, and both of those wins came from backup quarterbacks.
- 48:27SPEAKER_04: He had in 2019 Matt Wells' first year, we played Jed Duffy and won that game after Alan Bowman went out.
- 48:33SPEAKER_04: And then last season, of course, Alan Bowman goes out.
- 48:35SPEAKER_04: Henry Columbi comes in and wins that game in Lubbock.
- 48:38SPEAKER_04: So uh we have a weird streak going on against the Mountaineers.
- 48:41SPEAKER_03: I guess Matt Wells just knows how to beat Neil Brown and jump, but just Neil Brown that he's got we know is 100% over right now.
- 48:49SPEAKER_03: So um, and hey, I I like like I said before we got into this, that's the most important stat of the episode.
- 48:55SPEAKER_03: Uh, but Morgan Sound's a tough place to play, and uh we're giving them a minute mid-afternoon game, so it's not like the stadium will be sleepy, so it's gonna be a tough crowd.
- 49:03SPEAKER_03: I'm sure there's plenty of now near fans that have a lot of hope in the season now, as they should.
- 49:07SPEAKER_03: So they're gonna fill that place and they're gonna want to get a dub.
- 49:09SPEAKER_03: And I bet a lot of them are looking at the schedule saying easy dub.
- 49:12SPEAKER_03: And it's hard to blame them right now.
- 49:13SPEAKER_03: You know, after the if you want to just reference off the game of the UT game, you're gonna be like, Oh, Texas Tech is an easy win.
- 49:18SPEAKER_03: Go ahead and knock that one up.
- 49:19SPEAKER_03: Um, so maybe we can use that to our advantage.
- 49:21SPEAKER_03: But I just I hope that's not a depressant on our team.
- 49:24SPEAKER_03: But a lot of a lot of teams are gonna be looking at us that way, so we we gotta we gotta be able to bring it, as they should look at us that way after that performance last week.
- 49:32SPEAKER_04: But uh, what I have written down for the keys to victory, uh, literally change everything that we did on defense, literally everything, just change everything.
- 49:41SPEAKER_04: Don't do because West Virginia's got a pretty decent running back in Letty Brown himself.
- 49:46SPEAKER_04: He's not as good as Bijan Robinson, but he is still pretty solid.
- 49:50SPEAKER_04: So I'm sure they're gonna want to get the run game going.
- 49:52SPEAKER_04: And uh with how we approached it against Bijan and Roshan last week, uh, you know, change it, change it up a little bit.
- 50:01SPEAKER_04: Uh, Keith Patterson, we're really hoping for that.
- 50:04SPEAKER_04: Um, uh, they have to send more than three guys.
- 50:07SPEAKER_04: I'll emphasize it again.
- 50:09SPEAKER_04: We have to get to Jared Dagey and make him make plays because, in my eyes, he is not a good quarterback.
- 50:17SPEAKER_04: So he's gonna make some mistakes if we get some pressure on him.
- 50:20SPEAKER_04: Uh, give give our linebackers and and our defensive backs a chance to make a play on the ball, possibly get a few turnovers here and go win the game.
- 50:29SPEAKER_03: Yeah, we're we're gonna give Keith Patterson Patterson one because, like we said, we we've been a big fan of him all uh all season, and uh we were a pretty big fan of him last season as well.
- 50:38SPEAKER_03: Um, so I really do hope that they bring it uh this season.
- 50:41SPEAKER_03: I hope, like you said, they burn that playbook for UT and never, never, never touch that again.
- 50:45SPEAKER_03: Please do not go back to that binder.
- 50:47SPEAKER_03: That binder's gone, bro.
- 50:49SPEAKER_03: All right, no, we're starting over over here.
- 50:51SPEAKER_03: Um, but I'm with you.
- 50:53SPEAKER_03: We gotta we gotta play aggressive, man.
- 50:54SPEAKER_03: If we're playing aggressive, it's it seems to play better in our hand.
- 50:58SPEAKER_03: Um, so it's just I don't think we have the ability to play conservative because I just don't think we have the talent level to do that.
- 51:05SPEAKER_03: I just and these teams are too good.
- 51:07SPEAKER_03: You gotta you gotta bring it, you gotta you gotta show some guts.
- 51:09SPEAKER_03: So I really hope they do.
- 51:11SPEAKER_04: Yeah, absolutely.
- 51:12SPEAKER_04: Go back to the tight end approach, uh, you know, with offensively, find your receivers because we've found out that our receivers can make some plays these last couple games.
- 51:21SPEAKER_04: You know, Caitlin Geiger's been getting involved.
- 51:23SPEAKER_04: Uh Miles Price had a few good catches last game.
- 51:26SPEAKER_04: Trey Cleveland, uh, you know, easy is gonna be easy.
- 51:29SPEAKER_04: Uh, make him, you know, involve him and throw it to him uh as well.
- 51:34SPEAKER_04: But you know, get everybody involved.
- 51:35SPEAKER_04: Uh we have the receiving court to do it.
- 51:37SPEAKER_04: I trust them.
- 51:38SPEAKER_04: Uh, I trust Henry Columbi.
- 51:40SPEAKER_04: I don't necessarily trust this O-line all that well, but uh hopefully, you know, they they play a solid game and give him enough time to make some plays out there.
- 51:47SPEAKER_04: And if he were to get pressured, hopefully he can escape and take off like we've seen uh at times with Henry Columbi.
- 51:54SPEAKER_03: Yeah, for sure.
- 51:55SPEAKER_03: That's that's what's been nice about Henry Columbi, is he's definitely not afraid to take off if he doesn't see an option.
- 51:59SPEAKER_03: Uh I like that kind of uh that kind of courage.
- 52:02SPEAKER_03: Um, I I do hope that Sonny Cumbie is in his office this week designing the offense around Henry Columbi.
- 52:07SPEAKER_03: Um, because I uh Henry Columbi does not have the same arm that Tyler Shuck does.
- 52:11SPEAKER_03: So I don't know if we can really take a shit in many shots deep.
- 52:13SPEAKER_03: You got to keep it pretty mid-game, probably if you want to uh if you want consistent progress.
- 52:18SPEAKER_03: Um, but I I I I have faith that Sonny's a smart enough guy and understands Henry Columbia enough to to build an offense around him, use these awesome receivers, and obviously hand the ball off to these wonderful running backs.
- 52:29SPEAKER_03: Uh, because we gotta obviously gotta use every tool in the in the in the bucket because your best weapon, arguably, with Tyler Shuck is kind of out the window.
- 52:37SPEAKER_03: So you gotta kind of rethink it.
- 52:40SPEAKER_04: Yeah, and it's it's gonna be even a tougher challenge for the offense this week.
- 52:43SPEAKER_04: West Virginia's defense is better than Texas's defense.
- 52:46SPEAKER_04: So uh they have guys on that defensive line like Akeem Mezzador and Dante Stills that are gonna make an impact and are really solid college football players.
- 52:54SPEAKER_04: Uh, they have a really good safety and Alonzo Ady.
- 52:57SPEAKER_04: Their linebackers, Josh Chandler Sameda leads the team in tackles this season.
- 53:01SPEAKER_04: They have a good defense and they held OU to 16 points last week.
- 53:05SPEAKER_04: So uh, you know, we're gonna have to try some different things and make it work this uh this coming week.
- 53:10SPEAKER_04: But you know, again, I have faith in this offense.
- 53:12SPEAKER_04: I do I don't have so much faith in the defense this year, um, after that Texas game.
- 53:17SPEAKER_04: So hopefully we play a more complete game and everything comes back to normal.
- 53:22SPEAKER_04: And that Texas game was more a fluke than anything.
- 53:25SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I'm really looking forward to this West Virginia game because you know, West Virginia is a lot more like your average Big 12 team than UT is, you know, just the town level just isn't the same as as a UT.
- 53:35SPEAKER_03: Um, so I'm excited to see how we test up against a uh a team more our level, you know, see how we we overcome that.
- 53:42SPEAKER_03: Um, because it could give us a good gauge about what we can expect for the rest of the season.
- 53:46SPEAKER_03: Um, you know, if we fight a good game, if it's a close loss, we still have plenty to look forward to.
- 53:51SPEAKER_03: But if we if we get blown out by a West Virginia, then hope starts to sink down a bit.
- 53:56SPEAKER_03: And I don't expect that at all.
- 53:57SPEAKER_03: But this is a team we can absolutely beat.
- 54:00SPEAKER_03: Vegas doesn't think we can, but it's this is a good indicator about how we should feel and what we should expect going forward.
- 54:07SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 54:07SPEAKER_04: I mean, did you did you have anything else on West Virginia?
- 54:10SPEAKER_04: Because I I mean, I I have uh a I have a score prediction, I don't know how true it's gonna be, or or you know, it's just so hard to determine because I really do not think we're as bad as what we put out on the field last week, but it's hard to determine anything other than what we've just recently seen.
- 54:28SPEAKER_04: So uh, you know, I'll say for my score prediction, I'll get I I have to say West Virginia because of the way we played last week.
- 54:35SPEAKER_04: I'm gonna say they're gonna win by uh 14, probably do something in the ballpark of 35-21.
- 54:41SPEAKER_03: All right, all right, you know what?
- 54:43SPEAKER_03: I'm I'm keeping the faith.
- 54:44SPEAKER_03: I I think we light the fire.
- 54:46SPEAKER_03: Uh, I'll I'll go ahead and be your mirror then.
- 54:48SPEAKER_03: Uh, I think it's gonna be a really close game.
- 54:50SPEAKER_03: I'm going uh I'm gonna go 32-28.
- 54:53SPEAKER_04: Texas Tech or West Virginia?
- 54:54SPEAKER_04: Texas Tech, baby.
- 54:56SPEAKER_04: There you go.
- 54:57SPEAKER_04: I sure hope you're right, my guy.
- 54:59SPEAKER_04: Uh I I would never be uh more happy to be wrong uh than if we just go into Morgantown and and get this win and and restart the season, basically, give our fans something to cheer about moving forward and hopefully make our way inch our way closer to a bowl game and hopefully a little better than that.
- 55:16SPEAKER_04: But uh man, you know, this is this is a big game for the program.
- 55:19SPEAKER_04: This is a big game for Matt Wells.
- 55:21SPEAKER_04: Obviously, we all know how hot his seat is at this point.
- 55:25SPEAKER_04: So uh, you know, we need some change and hopefully it comes sooner than later.
- 55:29SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I mean, these are two teams that expected the same thing out of the season, you know.
- 55:32SPEAKER_03: They're they're both thinking like optimistically we win eight games and and pessimistically we win, you know, at worst five, of course.
- 55:38SPEAKER_03: So it's gonna be an interesting matchup.
- 55:40SPEAKER_03: I think it's gonna be a fun matchup.
- 55:41SPEAKER_03: Uh, I do like playing the Mountaineers, and um, it's gone pretty well for this these past two seasons.
- 55:46SPEAKER_03: So keep the faith, y'all, and uh let Matt Wells continue that undeteated streak, baby.
- 55:51SPEAKER_04: Let's hope three and oh, baby, right where we want to be.
- 55:54SPEAKER_03: Right where we want to be, Don.
- 55:55SPEAKER_04: Right where we want to be, Don.
- 55:57SPEAKER_04: So uh let's move it on.
- 55:58SPEAKER_04: Let's finish off with a song of the week.
- 56:01SPEAKER_04: Tristan, what is your song of the week?
- 56:03SPEAKER_03: All right, so I I'm I'm kind of going with a little more uh sad boy vibes, just a little bit.
- 56:08SPEAKER_03: It's not a sad song, but you know, it's kind of mellow.
- 56:10SPEAKER_03: I'm going cowgirl blues by Midland.
- 56:12SPEAKER_03: It's a song I just can't skip, it's got a fun beat, it's very organic, it's got you know, just it's a good tune.
- 56:17SPEAKER_03: So I'm going with that one.
- 56:18SPEAKER_03: I just I like I dig that one.
- 56:25SPEAKER_00: Dance with a cowboy right on.
- 56:34SPEAKER_04: Second Midland song of the pod that you have recommended.
- 56:37SPEAKER_04: I like the last one, I'm sure I'll like this one, but uh again, never heard it before.
- 56:41SPEAKER_04: So uh have to give that one a listen.
- 56:44SPEAKER_04: My song of the week.
- 56:46SPEAKER_04: Uh, after watching a game like that, you're all up in your feelings.
- 56:49SPEAKER_04: Uh, you know, my I'm not gonna do any Drake here, but uh you just you kind of get a song where uh you're just reflecting on everything.
- 56:59SPEAKER_04: Why am I a Texas Tech fan?
- 57:01SPEAKER_04: Why do I do this to myself?
- 57:03SPEAKER_04: What why can't I be happy during football?
- 57:06SPEAKER_04: Why host a Texas Tech podcast?
- 57:08SPEAKER_04: Why do I start a Texas Tech podcast and force myself to talk about a terrible game against the University of Texas?
- 57:15SPEAKER_04: But so this song is kind of like that.
- 57:18SPEAKER_04: It's uh called Lakeshore Drive by Aliata Haynes Jeremiah.
- 57:23SPEAKER_04: Uh, it's a really good song.
- 57:24SPEAKER_04: It's it's actually it's actually about LSD.
- 57:28SPEAKER_04: Uh Lakeshore Drive LSD.
- 57:31SPEAKER_04: It's kind of a hidden undertone of the song, but uh it's it's relaxing.
- 57:35SPEAKER_04: It's it's just it's a good driving song, something you put on, and it just kind of gets you in your thoughts and gets you in your feelings.
- 57:42SPEAKER_04: So uh I was in my feelings this last Saturday.
- 57:45SPEAKER_04: So that is my song of the week.
- 57:48SPEAKER_02: There's a road I'd like to tell you about.
- 57:58SPEAKER_03: Two things there, sir, is one this is a family program, and you're talking about illicit drugs.
- 58:04SPEAKER_03: Are you serious?
- 58:04SPEAKER_04: You don't know that, you don't know that.
- 58:06SPEAKER_04: Well, LSD could stand for love love so it can't stand for lakeshore drive.
- 58:14SPEAKER_04: It could.
- 58:16SPEAKER_04: That's what the song's technically about.
- 58:18SPEAKER_03: And I drive.
- 58:20SPEAKER_03: I don't even want the chore of spelling out that artist's name.
- 58:23SPEAKER_03: I don't either.
- 58:24SPEAKER_03: What a mouthful.
- 58:25SPEAKER_04: Yeah, it's it's a lot, but it's it's an older song, but it's good.
- 58:29SPEAKER_04: It it really is.
- 58:30SPEAKER_04: It's a it's an easy listening tune.
