- 0:24Speaker 1: Bosh Chalek or true Steel. Once upon a time there
- 0:31Speaker 1: was a king who had three sons and three daughters.
- 0:34Speaker 1: At length, old age overtook him, and the hour came
- 0:38Speaker 1: for him to die. While dying, he called to him
- 0:41Speaker 1: his three sons and three daughters and told his sons
- 0:45Speaker 1: to let their sisters marry the very first men who
- 0:47Speaker 1: came to ask them in marriage. Do this, or dread
- 0:52Speaker 1: my curse, said he, and soon after expired. Some time
- 0:58Speaker 1: after his death, there came one night a great knocking
- 1:01Speaker 1: at the gate. The whole palace shook, and outside was
- 1:05Speaker 1: heard a great noise of squeaking, singing, and shouting, whilst
- 1:09Speaker 1: lightnings played round the whole court of the palace. The
- 1:13Speaker 1: people in the palace were very much frightened, so that
- 1:16Speaker 1: they shook for fear, when all at once someone shouted
- 1:20Speaker 1: from the outside, O, Princes open the door. Thereupon the
- 1:27Speaker 1: king's eldest son said, do not open. The second son added,
- 1:32Speaker 1: do not open for anything in the world. But the
- 1:35Speaker 1: youngest son said, I will open the door, and he
- 1:39Speaker 1: jumped up and opened it. The moment he had opened
- 1:43Speaker 1: the door, something came in, but the brother could see
- 1:46Speaker 1: nothing except a bright light in one part of the room.
- 1:49Speaker 1: Out of this light came these words, I have come
- 1:54Speaker 1: to demand your eldest sister for wife, and I shall
- 1:59Speaker 1: take her away this moment without any delay, for I
- 2:06Speaker 1: wait for nothing, Neither will I come a second time
- 2:11Speaker 1: to ask for her. Therefore, answer me quickly, will you
- 2:16Speaker 1: give her or not? The eldest brother said, I will
- 2:22Speaker 1: not give her. How can I give her when I
- 2:24Speaker 1: cannot see you and do not know who you are,
- 2:27Speaker 1: nor whence you come. You come tonight for the first
- 2:30Speaker 1: time and wish to take her away instantly? Should I
- 2:33Speaker 1: not know where I can visit my sister sometimes? The
- 2:37Speaker 1: second said, I will not give my sister to night
- 2:40Speaker 1: to be taken away. But the youngest said, I will
- 2:44Speaker 1: give her if you will not. Have you forgotten what
- 2:47Speaker 1: our father commanded us, And with these words, taking his
- 2:51Speaker 1: sister by the hand, he gave her away, saying may
- 2:54Speaker 1: she be to you a happy and honest wife. As
- 2:58Speaker 1: the sister passed over the threshold, everyone in the palace
- 3:01Speaker 1: fell to the ground from fear. So vivid was the lightning,
- 3:04Speaker 1: and loud the claps of thunder, the heavens seemed to
- 3:08Speaker 1: be on fire, and the whole sky rumbled, so that
- 3:11Speaker 1: the whole palace shook as if about to fall. All this, however,
- 3:15Speaker 1: passed over, and soon after the day dawned. When it
- 3:19Speaker 1: grew light enough, the brothers went to see if any
- 3:21Speaker 1: trace was left of the mighty power to whom they
- 3:24Speaker 1: had given their sister, so that they might be able
- 3:27Speaker 1: to trace the road by which it had gone. There was, however,
- 3:31Speaker 1: nothing which they could either see or hear. The second night,
- 3:36Speaker 1: about the same time, there was heard again round the
- 3:39Speaker 1: whole palace a great noise, as if an army was
- 3:43Speaker 1: whistling and hissing. And at length someone at the door
- 3:46Speaker 1: cried out, open the door, O princes. They were afraid
- 3:53Speaker 1: to disobey, and opened the door, and some dreadful power
- 3:57Speaker 1: began to speak, give here the girl, your second sister.
- 4:03Speaker 1: I am come to demand her. The eldest brother answered,
- 4:07Speaker 1: I will not give her away. The second brother said,
- 4:11Speaker 1: I will not give you my sister. But the youngest said,
- 4:15Speaker 1: I will give her. Have you forgotten what our father
- 4:18Speaker 1: told us to do? So he took his sister by
- 4:21Speaker 1: the hand and gave her over, saying, take her. May
- 4:24Speaker 1: she be honest and bring you happiness. Then the unseen
- 4:28Speaker 1: noises departed with the girl. Next day, as soon as
- 4:32Speaker 1: it dawned, all three brothers walked round the palace and
- 4:37Speaker 1: for some distance beyond, looking everywhere for some trace where
- 4:40Speaker 1: the power had gone, but nothing could be seen or heard.
- 4:45Speaker 1: The third night, at the same hour as before, again
- 4:48Speaker 1: the palace rocked from its very foundations, and there was
- 4:51Speaker 1: a mighty uproar outside. Then a voice shouted open the door.
- 4:58Speaker 1: The sons of the king arose and opened the door,
- 5:00Speaker 1: and a great power passed by them and said, I
- 5:04Speaker 1: am come to demand your youngest sister. The eldest and
- 5:08Speaker 1: the second son shouted, no, we will not give our
- 5:11Speaker 1: sister this third night. At any rate, we will know
- 5:14Speaker 1: before our youngest sister goes away from our house, to
- 5:17Speaker 1: whom we are giving her, and where she is going,
- 5:20Speaker 1: so that we can come to visit her whenever we
- 5:22Speaker 1: wish to do so. Thereupon, the youngest brother said, then
- 5:27Speaker 1: I will give her. Have you forgotten what our father
- 5:30Speaker 1: on his deathbed recommended us? It is not so very
- 5:33Speaker 1: long ago. Then he took the girl by the hand
- 5:36Speaker 1: and said, here she is, Take her, and may she
- 5:40Speaker 1: bring you happiness and be happy herself. Then instantly the
- 5:44Speaker 1: power went away with a great noise. When the day dawned,
- 5:48Speaker 1: the brothers were very anxious about the fate of their sister,
- 5:51Speaker 1: but could find no trace of the way in which
- 5:53Speaker 1: she had gone. Some time after, the brothers, speaking together, said,
- 5:58Speaker 1: it is really very one wonderful what has happened to
- 6:01Speaker 1: our sisters. We have no news, no trace of them.
- 6:04Speaker 1: We do not know where they are gone, nor whom
- 6:07Speaker 1: they have married. At last, they said to each other,
- 6:10Speaker 1: let us go and try to find our sisters. So
- 6:14Speaker 1: they prepared immediately for their journey, took money for their
- 6:17Speaker 1: traveling expenses, and went away in search of their three sisters.
- 6:22Speaker 1: They had traveled some time when they lost their way
- 6:25Speaker 1: in a forest and wandered about a whole day. When
- 6:28Speaker 1: it grew dark, they thought they would stop for the
- 6:30Speaker 1: night at some place where they could find water. So,
- 6:32Speaker 1: having come to a lake, they decided to sleep near
- 6:35Speaker 1: it and sat down to take some supper. When the
- 6:38Speaker 1: time for sleep came, the eldest brother said, I will
- 6:41Speaker 1: keep watch while you sleep, and so the two younger
- 6:45Speaker 1: brothers went to sleep, and the eldest watched. In the
- 6:48Speaker 1: middle of the night, the lake began to be greatly agitated,
- 6:51Speaker 1: and the brother who was watching grew quite frightened, especially
- 6:54Speaker 1: when he saw something coming towards him from the middle
- 6:57Speaker 1: of the lake. When it came near, he saw that
- 7:00Speaker 1: it was a terrific alligator with two ears, and it
- 7:04Speaker 1: ran at him. But he drew his knife and struck
- 7:07Speaker 1: it and cut off its head. When he had done this,
- 7:10Speaker 1: he cut off the ears also and put them in
- 7:12Speaker 1: his pocket. The body and the head, however, he threw
- 7:15Speaker 1: back into the lake. Meanwhile, the day began to dawn,
- 7:19Speaker 1: but the two brothers slept on and knew nothing of
- 7:22Speaker 1: what their eldest brother had done. At length, he awakened them,
- 7:25Speaker 1: but told them nothing. So they went on their travels together.
- 7:30Speaker 1: When the next day was closing and it began to
- 7:32Speaker 1: go dark, they took counsel with each other where they
- 7:35Speaker 1: should rest for the night and where they should find water.
- 7:37Speaker 1: They felt also afraid because they were approaching some dangerous mountains,
- 7:42Speaker 1: coming to a small lake, they resolved to rest there
- 7:45Speaker 1: that night, and having made a fire, they placed their
- 7:48Speaker 1: things near it and prepared to sleep. Then the second
- 7:51Speaker 1: brother said, this night, I will keep guard whilst you sleep.
- 7:56Speaker 1: So the two others fell asleep, and the second brother
- 7:58Speaker 1: remained watching. All At once the lake began to move,
- 8:03Speaker 1: and lo an alligator with two heads came running to
- 8:07Speaker 1: swallow up the three. But the brother who watched, grasped
- 8:10Speaker 1: his knife, felled the alligator to the ground with one
- 8:13Speaker 1: blow and cut off both the heads. Having done this,
- 8:17Speaker 1: he cut off the two pairs of ears, put them
- 8:19Speaker 1: in his pocket, and threw the body into the water,
- 8:22Speaker 1: and the two heads after it. The other brothers, however,
- 8:26Speaker 1: knew nothing about the danger which they had escaped, and
- 8:29Speaker 1: continued to sleep very soundly till the morning dawned. Then
- 8:33Speaker 1: the second brother awoke them, saying, arise, my brothers, it
- 8:37Speaker 1: is day. And they instantly jumped up and prepared to
- 8:40Speaker 1: continue their journey. But they knew not in what country
- 8:44Speaker 1: they now were, and as they had eaten up nearly
- 8:47Speaker 1: all their food, they feared greatly lest they should die
- 8:49Speaker 1: of hunger in that unknown land. So they prayed God
- 8:53Speaker 1: to give them sight of some city or village, or
- 8:55Speaker 1: at least that they might meet some one to guide them,
- 8:59Speaker 1: for they had already been wandering three days up and
- 9:01Speaker 1: down in a wilderness, and could see no end to it.
- 9:05Speaker 1: Pretty early in the morning they came to a large
- 9:07Speaker 1: lake and resolved to go no further, but remained there
- 9:11Speaker 1: all day, and also to spend the night there. For
- 9:14Speaker 1: if we go on, said they, we are not sure
- 9:17Speaker 1: that we shall find any more water near which we
- 9:20Speaker 1: can rest. So they remained there. When evening came, they
- 9:25Speaker 1: made a great fire, took their frugal supper, and prepared
- 9:28Speaker 1: to sleep. Then the youngest brother said, this night I
- 9:32Speaker 1: will keep guard whilst you sleep. And so the other
- 9:35Speaker 1: two went to sleep, and the youngest brother kept awake,
- 9:38Speaker 1: looking sharply about him, his eyes being turned often towards
- 9:42Speaker 1: the lake. Part of the night had already passed, when
- 9:45Speaker 1: suddenly the whole lake began to move. The waves dashed
- 9:49Speaker 1: over the fire and half quenched it. Then he drew
- 9:52Speaker 1: his sword and placed himself near the fire. As there
- 9:55Speaker 1: appeared a great alligator with three heads, which rushed upon
- 9:59Speaker 1: the brothers as if about to swallow them all three.
- 10:04Speaker 1: But the youngest brother had a brave heart and would
- 10:06Speaker 1: not awaken his brothers. So he met the alligator and
- 10:09Speaker 1: gave him three blows in succession, and at each blow
- 10:13Speaker 1: he cut off one of the three heads. Then he
- 10:16Speaker 1: cut off the six ears and put them in his pocket,
- 10:19Speaker 1: and threw the body and the three heads into the lake.
- 10:22Speaker 1: Whilst he was thus busy, the fire had quite gone out,
- 10:25Speaker 1: so he, having nothing there with which he could light
- 10:28Speaker 1: the fire, and not wishing to awaken his brothers from
- 10:31Speaker 1: their deep slumbers, stepped a little way into the forest
- 10:34Speaker 1: with the hope of seeing something with which he might
- 10:37Speaker 1: rekindle the fire. There was, however, no trace of any
- 10:41Speaker 1: fire anywhere. At last, in his search he climbed up
- 10:45Speaker 1: a very high tree, and, having reached the top, looked
- 10:48Speaker 1: about on all sides. After much looking, he thought he
- 10:52Speaker 1: saw the glare of a fire not very far off.
- 10:55Speaker 1: So he came down from the tree and went in
- 10:57Speaker 1: the direction in which he had seen the fire, in
- 10:59Speaker 1: order to get some brand with which he might again
- 11:02Speaker 1: light the fire. He walked very far on this errand,
- 11:06Speaker 1: and though the glare seemed always near him, it was
- 11:09Speaker 1: a very long time before he reached it. Suddenly, however,
- 11:12Speaker 1: he came upon a cave, and in the cave a
- 11:15Speaker 1: great fire was burning. Round it sat nine giants, and
- 11:19Speaker 1: two men were being roasted, one on each side of
- 11:23Speaker 1: the fire. Besides that, there stood upon the fire a
- 11:26Speaker 1: great kettle full of the limbs of men, ready to
- 11:28Speaker 1: be cooked. When the king's son saw that, he was
- 11:32Speaker 1: terrified and would gladly have gone back, but it was
- 11:35Speaker 1: no longer possible. Then he shouted as loud and cheerfully
- 11:39Speaker 1: as he could, good evening, my dear comrades, I have
- 11:43Speaker 1: been a very long time in search of you. They
- 11:45Speaker 1: received him well, saying welcome. If thou art of our company.
- 11:51Speaker 1: He answered, I shall remain yours forever, and would give
- 11:55Speaker 1: my life for your sake. Eh, said they. If you
- 11:58Speaker 1: intend to be one of vas, you know you must
- 12:01Speaker 1: also eat man's flesh and go out with us in
- 12:04Speaker 1: search of prey. The king's son answered, certainly, I shall
- 12:09Speaker 1: do everything that you do. Then come and sit with USh.
- 12:14Speaker 1: Cried the giants, and the whole company sitting round the fire,
- 12:17Speaker 1: took meat out of the kettle and began to eat.
- 12:20Speaker 1: The king's son pretended to eat also, but instead of eating,
- 12:23Speaker 1: he always threw the meat behind him, and thus deceived them.
- 12:28Speaker 1: When they had eaten up the whole of the roasted meat,
- 12:30Speaker 1: the giants got up and said, let us now go
- 12:33Speaker 1: to hunt, that we may have meat for tomorrow. So
- 12:37Speaker 1: they went away, all nine of them. The king's son,
- 12:40Speaker 1: making the tenth, come along. They said to him, there
- 12:43Speaker 1: is a city near in which a great king lives.
- 12:47Speaker 1: We have been supplying ourselves with food from that city
- 12:50Speaker 1: a great many years. As they came near the city,
- 12:54Speaker 1: they pulled two tall pine trees up by the roots
- 12:57Speaker 1: and carried them along with them. Having come to the
- 13:00Speaker 1: city wall, they reared one pine tree up against it
- 13:03Speaker 1: and said to the king's son, go up now to
- 13:07Speaker 1: the top of the wall, so that we may be
- 13:10Speaker 1: able to give you the other pine tree, which you
- 13:13Speaker 1: must take by the top and throw down into the city.
- 13:17Speaker 1: Take care, however, they said, to keep the top of
- 13:21Speaker 1: the tree in your hands, so that we can go
- 13:24Speaker 1: down the stem of it into the city. Thereupon the
- 13:29Speaker 1: king's son climbed up on the wall and then cried
- 13:32Speaker 1: out to them, I don't know what to do. I
- 13:35Speaker 1: am not acquainted with this place, and I don't understand
- 13:38Speaker 1: how to throw the tree over the wall. Please, one
- 13:41Speaker 1: of you come up and show me what I must do.
- 13:44Speaker 1: Then one of the giants climbed up the tree placed
- 13:46Speaker 1: against the wall, caught the top of the other pine tree,
- 13:49Speaker 1: and threw it over the wall, keeping the top all
- 13:52Speaker 1: the time safe in his hand. Whilst he was thus standing,
- 13:56Speaker 1: the king's son drew his sword, struck him on the neck,
- 13:59Speaker 1: and cut his head off, so that the giant fell
- 14:01Speaker 1: down into the city. Then he called to the other
- 14:04Speaker 1: eight giants, your brother is in the city. Come one
- 14:08Speaker 1: after another so that I can let you also down
- 14:11Speaker 1: into the city. And the giants, not knowing what had
- 14:14Speaker 1: happened to the first one, climbed up one after the other,
- 14:18Speaker 1: and thus the King's son cut off their heads till
- 14:20Speaker 1: he had killed all the nine. After that, he himself
- 14:25Speaker 1: slowly descended the pine tree and went into the city,
- 14:28Speaker 1: walking through the streets, but there was not one living
- 14:32Speaker 1: creature to be seen. The city seemed quite deserted. Then
- 14:36Speaker 1: he said to himself, surely those giants have made this
- 14:40Speaker 1: great devastation and carried all the people away. After walking
- 14:44Speaker 1: about a very long time, he came to a tall tower,
- 14:47Speaker 1: and looking up, he saw a light in one of
- 14:50Speaker 1: the rooms. So he opened the door and went up
- 14:53Speaker 1: the steps into the room. And what a beautiful room
- 14:57Speaker 1: it was in which he had entered. It was decorated
- 15:00Speaker 1: with gold and silk and velvet, and there was no
- 15:04Speaker 1: one there except a girl lying on a couch sleeping.
- 15:08Speaker 1: As soon as the king's son entered, his eyes fell
- 15:11Speaker 1: upon the girl, who was exceedingly beautiful. Just then he
- 15:15Speaker 1: saw a large serpent coming down the wall, and it
- 15:18Speaker 1: had stretched out its head and was ready to strike
- 15:21Speaker 1: the girl on the forehead between the eyes. So he
- 15:25Speaker 1: drew his dagger very quickly and nailed the snake's head
- 15:28Speaker 1: to the wall, exclaiming God grant that my dagger may
- 15:32Speaker 1: not be taken out of the wall by any hand
- 15:34Speaker 1: but my own. And thereupon he hurried away and passed
- 15:38Speaker 1: over the city wall, climbing up and going down the
- 15:40Speaker 1: pine trees. When he got back to the cavern where
- 15:43Speaker 1: the giants had been, he plucked a brand from the
- 15:46Speaker 1: fire and ran away very quickly to the spot where
- 15:48Speaker 1: he had left his brothers, and found them still sleeping.
- 15:52Speaker 1: He soon lighted the fire again, and meanwhile, the sun
- 15:55Speaker 1: having arisen, he awoke his brothers and they arose, and
- 15:58Speaker 1: all three continued their journey. The same day they came
- 16:02Speaker 1: to the road leading to the city. In that city
- 16:05Speaker 1: lived a mighty king who used to walk about the
- 16:07Speaker 1: streets every morning, weeping over the great destruction of his
- 16:11Speaker 1: people by the giants. The king feared greatly that one
- 16:14Speaker 1: day his own daughter might also be eaten up by
- 16:17Speaker 1: one of them. That morning, he rose very early and
- 16:21Speaker 1: went to look about the city. The streets were all empty,
- 16:25Speaker 1: because most of the people of the city had been
- 16:27Speaker 1: eaten up by the giants. Walking about, he at last
- 16:31Speaker 1: observed a tall pine tree pulled up quite by the
- 16:33Speaker 1: roots and leaning against the city wall. He drew near
- 16:37Speaker 1: and saw a great wonder nine giants, the frightful enemies
- 16:42Speaker 1: of his people, were lying there, with their heads cut off.
- 16:46Speaker 1: When the king saw that, he rejoiced exceedingly, and all
- 16:50Speaker 1: the people who were left gathered round and praised God
- 16:54Speaker 1: and prayed for good health and good luck to those
- 16:56Speaker 1: who had killed the giants. At that moment, a servant
- 17:00Speaker 1: came running to tell the king that a serpent had
- 17:03Speaker 1: very nearly killed his daughter. So the king hurried back
- 17:07Speaker 1: to the palace and went quickly to the room wherein
- 17:09Speaker 1: his daughter was, and there he saw the snake pinned
- 17:12Speaker 1: to the wall with a dagger through its head. He
- 17:16Speaker 1: tried to draw the knife out, but he was not
- 17:18Speaker 1: able to do so. Then the king sent a proclamation
- 17:21Speaker 1: to all the corners of the kingdom, announcing that whoever
- 17:25Speaker 1: had killed the nine giants and nailed the snake to
- 17:27Speaker 1: the wall should come to the King, who would make
- 17:30Speaker 1: him great presents and give him his daughter for a wife.
- 17:34Speaker 1: This was proclaimed throughout the whole kingdom. The king ordered
- 17:38Speaker 1: moreover that large inns should be built on the principal roads,
- 17:42Speaker 1: and that every traveler who passed by should be asked
- 17:45Speaker 1: if he had ever heard of the man who had
- 17:47Speaker 1: killed the nine giants, and any traveler who knew anything
- 17:51Speaker 1: about the matter should come and tell what he knew
- 17:53Speaker 1: to the king, when he should be well rewarded. After
- 17:57Speaker 1: some time, the three brothers, traveling in search of their citess,
- 18:00Speaker 1: came one night to sleep at one of those inns.
- 18:03Speaker 1: After supper, the master of the inn came in to
- 18:06Speaker 1: speak to them, and, after boasting very much what great
- 18:09Speaker 1: things he had himself done, he asked them if they
- 18:12Speaker 1: themselves had ever done any great thing. Then the eldest
- 18:16Speaker 1: brother began to speak and said, after I started with
- 18:19Speaker 1: my brothers on this journey, one night we stopped to
- 18:22Speaker 1: sleep by a lake in the midst of a great forest.
- 18:25Speaker 1: Whilst my two brothers slept, I watched, and suddenly an
- 18:29Speaker 1: alligator came out of the lake to swallow us. But
- 18:31Speaker 1: I took my knife and cut off its head. If
- 18:33Speaker 1: you don't believe me, see here are the two ears
- 18:36Speaker 1: from his head. And he took the ears from his
- 18:39Speaker 1: pocket and threw them on the table. When the second
- 18:42Speaker 1: brother heard that, he said, I kept guard the second night,
- 18:45Speaker 1: and I killed an alligator with two heads. If you
- 18:48Speaker 1: do not believe me, look here are its four ears.
- 18:52Speaker 1: And he took the ears out of his pocket and
- 18:54Speaker 1: showed them. But the youngest brother kept silence. The master
- 18:58Speaker 1: of the inn began then to speak to him, saying, well,
- 19:01Speaker 1: my boy, your brothers are brave men. Let us hear
- 19:04Speaker 1: if you have not done some bold deed. Then the
- 19:08Speaker 1: youngest brother began, I have also done something, though it
- 19:11Speaker 1: may not be a great thing. When we stayed to
- 19:14Speaker 1: rest the third night in the great wilderness on the
- 19:16Speaker 1: shore of the lake, my brothers lay down to sleep,
- 19:18Speaker 1: for it was my turn to keep guard. In the
- 19:20Speaker 1: middle of the night, the water stirred mightily, and a
- 19:23Speaker 1: three headed alligator came out and wished to swallow us.
- 19:26Speaker 1: But I drew my sword and cut off all the
- 19:28Speaker 1: three heads. If you do not believe me, see here
- 19:32Speaker 1: are the six ears of the alligator. The brothers themselves
- 19:36Speaker 1: were greatly surprised, and he continued. Meanwhile, the fire had
- 19:41Speaker 1: gone out, and I went in search of fire. Wandering
- 19:44Speaker 1: about the mountain, I met nine giants in one cave.
- 19:47Speaker 1: And so he went on, telling all that had happened
- 19:49Speaker 1: and what he had done. When the innkeeper heard that,
- 19:53Speaker 1: he hurried off and told everything to the king. The
- 19:56Speaker 1: king gave him plenty of money and sent some of
- 19:59Speaker 1: his men to bring the three brothers to him. When
- 20:01Speaker 1: they came to the king, he asked, the youngest, have
- 20:05Speaker 1: you really done all these wonders in this city, killed
- 20:08Speaker 1: the giants and saved my daughter from death? Yes, your majesty,
- 20:13Speaker 1: answered the king's son. Then the king gave him his
- 20:16Speaker 1: daughter to wife and allowed him to take the first
- 20:18Speaker 1: place after him in the kingdom. After that, he said
- 20:21Speaker 1: to the two elder brothers, if you like, I will
- 20:24Speaker 1: also find wives for you too, and build palaces for you.
- 20:29Speaker 1: But they thanked him, saying they were already married, and
- 20:33Speaker 1: so told him how they had left home to search
- 20:35Speaker 1: for their sisters. When the king heard that, he kept
- 20:38Speaker 1: by him only the youngest brother his son in law,
- 20:42Speaker 1: and gave the other two each a mule loaded with
- 20:44Speaker 1: sacks full of money, And so the two elder brothers
- 20:48Speaker 1: went back to their kingdom. All the time, however, the
- 20:52Speaker 1: youngest brother was thinking of his three sisters, and many
- 20:55Speaker 1: a time he wished to go in search of them again,
- 20:58Speaker 1: though he was also sorry to leave his wife. The
- 21:02Speaker 1: king would never consent to his going, so the prince
- 21:05Speaker 1: wasted away slowly without speaking about his grief. One day,
- 21:09Speaker 1: the king went out hunting and said to his son
- 21:11Speaker 1: in law, remain here in the palace and take these
- 21:16Speaker 1: nine keys and keep them carefully. If you wish, however,
- 21:21Speaker 1: added he, you can open three or four rooms, wherein
- 21:25Speaker 1: you will see plenty of gold and silver and other
- 21:28Speaker 1: precious things. Indeed, if you much wish to do so,
- 21:33Speaker 1: you can open eight of the rooms. But let nothing
- 21:36Speaker 1: in the world tempt you to open the ninth. If
- 21:40Speaker 1: you open that, woe to you. The king went away
- 21:45Speaker 1: leaving his son in law in the palace, who immediately
- 21:48Speaker 1: began to open one room after another, till he had
- 21:51Speaker 1: opened the whole eight and saw in all masses of
- 21:54Speaker 1: all sorts of precious things. When he stood before the
- 21:58Speaker 1: door of the ninth room, he said to himself, I
- 22:01Speaker 1: have passed luckily through all kinds of adventures, and now
- 22:04Speaker 1: I must not dare to open this door. Thereupon he
- 22:08Speaker 1: opened it, and what did he see in the room
- 22:12Speaker 1: was a man whose legs were bound and iron up
- 22:14Speaker 1: to the knees, and his arms to the elbows. In
- 22:17Speaker 1: the four corners of the chamber there were four columns,
- 22:20Speaker 1: and from each an iron chain, and all the chains
- 22:23Speaker 1: met in a ring round the man's neck. So fast
- 22:27Speaker 1: was he bound that he could not move at all
- 22:29Speaker 1: in any way. In the front of him was a reservoir,
- 22:32Speaker 1: and from it water was streaming through a golden pipe
- 22:35Speaker 1: into a golden basin just before him. Near him stood
- 22:39Speaker 1: also a golden mug, all covered with precious stones. The
- 22:43Speaker 1: man looked at the water and longed to drink, but
- 22:46Speaker 1: he could not move to reach the cup. When the
- 22:48Speaker 1: king's son saw that, he was greatly surprised and stepped
- 22:51Speaker 1: back but the man cried, come in, I conjure you
- 22:55Speaker 1: in the name of the living God. Then the prince
- 22:58Speaker 1: again approached, and the man said, do a good deed
- 23:01Speaker 1: for the sake of the life. Hereafter, give me a
- 23:04Speaker 1: cup of water to drink, and be assured you will
- 23:07Speaker 1: receive as recompense from me another life. The king's son
- 23:12Speaker 1: thought it is well, after all to have two lives,
- 23:15Speaker 1: so he took the mug and filled it and gave
- 23:18Speaker 1: it to the man, who emptied it at once. Then
- 23:20Speaker 1: the prince asked him, now tell me what is your name,
- 23:24Speaker 1: and the man answered, my name is true Steel. The
- 23:29Speaker 1: king's son moved to go away, but the man begged again,
- 23:33Speaker 1: give me yet one cup of water, and I will
- 23:35Speaker 1: give you in addition a second life. The prince said
- 23:39Speaker 1: to himself, one life is mine already, and he offers
- 23:43Speaker 1: to give me another. That is indeed wonderful. So he
- 23:46Speaker 1: took the mug and gave it to him, and the
- 23:48Speaker 1: man drank it up. The prince began already to fasten
- 23:51Speaker 1: the door, while the man called to him, oh, my
- 23:54Speaker 1: brave one, come back a moment. You've done two good deeds,
- 23:59Speaker 1: Do yet a third one, and I will give you
- 24:01Speaker 1: a third life. Take the mug, fill it with water,
- 24:04Speaker 1: and pour the water on my head, and for that
- 24:08Speaker 1: I will give you a third life. When the king's
- 24:11Speaker 1: son heard that, he turned, filled the beaker with water
- 24:14Speaker 1: and poured it over the man's head. The moment the
- 24:17Speaker 1: water met his head, all the fastenings around the man's
- 24:20Speaker 1: neck broke, all the iron chains burst asunder. True Steel
- 24:24Speaker 1: jumped up like lightning, spread his wings and started to fly,
- 24:28Speaker 1: taking with him the king's daughter, the wife of his deliverer,
- 24:32Speaker 1: with whom he disappeared. What was to be done now?
- 24:36Speaker 1: The prince was afraid of the king's anger. When the
- 24:39Speaker 1: king returned from the chase, his son in law told
- 24:42Speaker 1: him all that had happened, and the King was very
- 24:45Speaker 1: sorry and said to him, why did you do this?
- 24:48Speaker 1: I told you not to open the ninth room. The
- 24:52Speaker 1: king's son answered, do not be angry with me. I
- 24:55Speaker 1: will go and find true Steel and bring my wife back.
- 24:59Speaker 1: Then the king atta to persuade him not to go away.
- 25:02Speaker 1: Do not go for anything in the world. He said,
- 25:06Speaker 1: you do not know true Steel. It cost me very
- 25:10Speaker 1: many soldiers and much money to catch him. Better remain
- 25:14Speaker 1: here and I will find you some other maiden for
- 25:18Speaker 1: a wife. Do not fear, for I love you as
- 25:22Speaker 1: my own son. Notwithstanding all that has happened. The prince, however,
- 25:27Speaker 1: would not hear of remaining there, so, taking some money
- 25:29Speaker 1: for his journey, he saddled and bridled his horse and
- 25:32Speaker 1: started on his travels in search of true steel. After
- 25:35Speaker 1: traveling a long time, he one day entered a strange city,
- 25:39Speaker 1: and as he was looking about, a girl called to
- 25:41Speaker 1: him from a kiosk, oh, son of the king, dismount
- 25:44Speaker 1: from your horse and come into the forecourt. When he
- 25:47Speaker 1: entered the courtyard, the girl met him, and on looking
- 25:49Speaker 1: at her, he recognized his eldest sister. They greeted each other,
- 25:53Speaker 1: and the sister said to him, come, my brother, come
- 25:56Speaker 1: with me into the kiosk. When they came into the kiosk,
- 25:59Speaker 1: he asked who her husband was, and she answered, I
- 26:02Speaker 1: am married to the King of Dragons, who is also
- 26:05Speaker 1: a dragon. I must hide you well, my dear brother,
- 26:08Speaker 1: for my husband has often said that he would kill
- 26:11Speaker 1: his brothers in law if he could only meet them.
- 26:14Speaker 1: I will try him first, and if he will promise
- 26:16Speaker 1: not to injure you, I will tell him you are here.
- 26:19Speaker 1: So she hid her brother and his horse as well
- 26:21Speaker 1: as she could. At night, supper was prepared in readiness
- 26:25Speaker 1: for her husband, and at last he came. When he
- 26:27Speaker 1: came flying into the courtyard, the whole palace shone. The
- 26:31Speaker 1: moment he came in. He called his wife and said, wife,
- 26:35Speaker 1: there is a smell of human bones here. Tell me
- 26:39Speaker 1: directly what it is. There is no one here, said she,
- 26:44Speaker 1: But he exclaimed that is not true. Then his wife said,
- 26:49Speaker 1: my dear, will you answer me truly what I am
- 26:51Speaker 1: going to ask you. Would you do any harm to
- 26:53Speaker 1: my brothers if one of them came here to see me,
- 26:56Speaker 1: And the dragon answered, your eldest and second brother, I
- 27:00Speaker 1: would kill and roast, but I would do no harm
- 27:04Speaker 1: to the youngest. Then his wife said, well, then I
- 27:09Speaker 1: will tell you that my youngest brother, and your brother
- 27:11Speaker 1: in law, is here. When the Dragon King heard that,
- 27:14Speaker 1: he said, let him come to me. So the sister
- 27:19Speaker 1: led the brother before the king her husband, and he
- 27:21Speaker 1: embraced him. They kissed each other, and the king exclaimed, welcome,
- 27:26Speaker 1: brother in law. I hope I find you well, returned
- 27:30Speaker 1: the prince courteously, and he told the dragon king all
- 27:33Speaker 1: his adventures from the beginning to the end. Then the
- 27:36Speaker 1: dragon King cried out, and where are you going, my
- 27:40Speaker 1: poor fellow. The day before yesterday, True Steel passed here,
- 27:45Speaker 1: carrying away your wife. I assailed him with seven thousand dragons,
- 27:52Speaker 1: yet could do him no harm. Leave the devil in peace.
- 27:58Speaker 1: I will give you as much money as you like,
- 28:01Speaker 1: and then you may go home quietly. But the king's
- 28:06Speaker 1: son would not hear of going back, and proposed next
- 28:09Speaker 1: morning to continue his journey. When the dragon King saw
- 28:12Speaker 1: that he could not change his intention, he took one
- 28:15Speaker 1: of his feathers and gave it into his hand, saying,
- 28:19Speaker 1: remember what I now say to you. Here you have
- 28:24Speaker 1: one of my feathers, and if you find true Steel
- 28:28Speaker 1: and are greatly pressed, burn this feather, and I will
- 28:33Speaker 1: come in an instant to help you with all my forces.
- 28:37Speaker 1: The king's son took the feather and continued his journey.
- 28:42Speaker 1: After long traveling about the world, he arrived at a
- 28:45Speaker 1: great city, and as he rode through the streets, a
- 28:47Speaker 1: girl called to him from a kiosk. Here, son of
- 28:50Speaker 1: the king, dismount, and come into the courtyard. The prince
- 28:54Speaker 1: led his horse into the yard, and behold the second
- 28:57Speaker 1: sister came to meet him. They embraced and each other,
- 29:00Speaker 1: and the sister led the brother up into the kiosk
- 29:02Speaker 1: and had his horse taken to a stable. When they
- 29:05Speaker 1: were in the kiosk, the sister asked her brother how
- 29:07Speaker 1: he came there, and he told her all his adventures.
- 29:10Speaker 1: He then asked her who her husband was. I am
- 29:14Speaker 1: married to the king of the Falcons, she said, and
- 29:17Speaker 1: he will come home tonight, so I must hide you somewhere,
- 29:19Speaker 1: for he often threatens my brothers. Shortly after she had
- 29:24Speaker 1: concealed her brother, the falcon king came home. As soon
- 29:27Speaker 1: as he alighted, all the house shook immediately. His supper
- 29:31Speaker 1: was set before him, but he said to his wife,
- 29:35Speaker 1: there are human bones somewhere. The wife answered, no, my husband,
- 29:41Speaker 1: there is nothing. After long talking, however, she asked him,
- 29:45Speaker 1: would you harm my brothers if they came to see me.
- 29:48Speaker 1: The falcon king answered, the eldest's brother and the second,
- 29:52Speaker 1: I would delight in torturing, but to the youngest I
- 29:57Speaker 1: would do no harm. So she told him about her brother.
- 30:02Speaker 1: Then he ordered that they should bring him up immediately,
- 30:04Speaker 1: and when he saw him, he rose up and they
- 30:06Speaker 1: embraced and kissed each other. Welcome, brother in law, said
- 30:12Speaker 1: the King of Falcons. I hope you are happy, brother,
- 30:15Speaker 1: returned the prince, and they sat down to sup together.
- 30:19Speaker 1: After supper, the falcon king asked his brother in law
- 30:22Speaker 1: where he was traveling. He replied that he was going
- 30:25Speaker 1: in search of true steel, and told the king all
- 30:28Speaker 1: that had happened. On hearing this, the falcon king began
- 30:31Speaker 1: to advise him to go no farther. It is no
- 30:35Speaker 1: use going on, said he. I will tell you something
- 30:40Speaker 1: of true steel. The day he stole your wife, I
- 30:45Speaker 1: assaulted him with four thousand falcons. We had a terrible
- 30:51Speaker 1: battle with him. Blood was shed till it reached the knees.
- 30:57Speaker 1: But yet we could do him. No. Ha, do you
- 31:01Speaker 1: think now that you alone could do anything to him.
- 31:06Speaker 1: I advise you to return home. Here is my treasure.
- 31:12Speaker 1: Take with you as much as you like. But the
- 31:17Speaker 1: king's son answered, I thank you for all your kindness,
- 31:21Speaker 1: but I cannot return. I shall go at all events
- 31:24Speaker 1: in search of true steel. For he thought to himself,
- 31:28Speaker 1: why should I not go, seeing I have three lives.
- 31:31Speaker 1: When the falcon king saw that he could not persuade
- 31:33Speaker 1: him to go back, he took a little feather and
- 31:36Speaker 1: gave it him, saying, take this feather, and when you
- 31:41Speaker 1: find yourself in great need, burn it, and I will
- 31:46Speaker 1: instantly come with all my powers to help you. So
- 31:52Speaker 1: the king's son took the feather and continued his journey,
- 31:55Speaker 1: hoping to find true steel. After traveling for a long
- 32:00Speaker 1: time about the world, he came to a third city.
- 32:03Speaker 1: As he entered, a girl called to him from a kiosk,
- 32:06Speaker 1: dismount and come into the courtyard. The king's son went
- 32:10Speaker 1: into the yard and was surprised to find his youngest sister,
- 32:13Speaker 1: who came to meet him. When they had embraced and
- 32:16Speaker 1: kissed each other, the sister led her brother to the
- 32:18Speaker 1: kiosk and sent his horse to the stables. The brother
- 32:22Speaker 1: asked her, dear sister, whom have you married. What is
- 32:26Speaker 1: your husband? She answered, my husband is the King of Eagles.
- 32:32Speaker 1: When the Eagle king returned home in the evening, his
- 32:35Speaker 1: wife received him. But he exclaimed, immediately, what man has
- 32:39Speaker 1: come into my palace? Tell me the truth? Instantly she answered,
- 32:45Speaker 1: no one is here, and they began their supper by
- 32:48Speaker 1: and by the wife said, tell me, truly, would you
- 32:52Speaker 1: do any harm to my brothers if they came here?
- 32:54Speaker 1: The eagle King answered, the eldest and second brother I
- 32:58Speaker 1: would kill, but to the youngest I would do no harm.
- 33:01Speaker 1: I would help him whenever I could. Then the wife said,
- 33:05Speaker 1: my youngest brother and your brother in law is here.
- 33:08Speaker 1: He came to see me. The Eagle King ordered that
- 33:11Speaker 1: they should bring. The prince instantly received him, standing, kissed
- 33:14Speaker 1: him and said, welcome brother in law, and the king's
- 33:18Speaker 1: son answered, I hope you were well. Then they sat
- 33:21Speaker 1: down to their supper. During the repast they conversed about
- 33:25Speaker 1: many things, and at last the prince told the king
- 33:28Speaker 1: he was traveling in search of true steel. When the
- 33:31Speaker 1: Eagle King heard that, he tried to dissuade him from
- 33:34Speaker 1: going on, adding, leave the devil in peace, my brother
- 33:37Speaker 1: in law, give up that journey and stay with me.
- 33:41Speaker 1: I will do everything to satisfy you. The king's son, however,
- 33:45Speaker 1: would not hear of remaining, but next day, as soon
- 33:48Speaker 1: as it was dawn, prepared to set out in search
- 33:50Speaker 1: of true steel. Then the Eagle King, seeing that he
- 33:53Speaker 1: could not persuade him to give up his journey, plucked
- 33:56Speaker 1: out one of his feathers and gave it him, saying,
- 33:59Speaker 1: if you find your great danger, my brother, make a
- 34:02Speaker 1: fire and burn this feather. I will then come to
- 34:05Speaker 1: your help immediately with all my eagles. So the prince
- 34:09Speaker 1: took the feather and went away. After traveling for a
- 34:13Speaker 1: very long time about the world, roaming from one city
- 34:16Speaker 1: to another, and always going farther and farther from his home,
- 34:20Speaker 1: he found his wife in a cavern. When the wife
- 34:23Speaker 1: saw him, she was greatly astonished and cried, in God's name,
- 34:27Speaker 1: my husband, how did you come here? He told her
- 34:31Speaker 1: how it all happened, and then added, now let us fly.
- 34:35Speaker 1: How can we fly? She asked, when True Steel will
- 34:38Speaker 1: reach us instantly, and when he does, he will kill
- 34:42Speaker 1: you and carry me back. But the prince, knowing he
- 34:45Speaker 1: had three other lives to live, persuaded his wife to flee,
- 34:49Speaker 1: and so they did as soon. However, as they started,
- 34:53Speaker 1: True Steel heard it and followed. Immediately when he reached them,
- 34:57Speaker 1: he shouted to the king's son, so, prince, you have
- 35:00Speaker 1: stolen your wife. Then, after taking the wife back, he added,
- 35:04Speaker 1: now I forgive you this life because I recollect that
- 35:07Speaker 1: I promised to give you three lives. But go away
- 35:10Speaker 1: directly and never come here again after your wife, else
- 35:13Speaker 1: you will be lost. Thus saying, he carried the wife away,
- 35:17Speaker 1: and the prince remained alone on the spot, not knowing
- 35:20Speaker 1: what to do. At length, the prince resolved to go
- 35:23Speaker 1: back to his wife. When he came near the cave,
- 35:26Speaker 1: he found an opportunity when true Steel was absent, and
- 35:29Speaker 1: took his wife again and tried to escape with her.
- 35:32Speaker 1: But True Steele learned their flight directly and ran after them.
- 35:36Speaker 1: When he reached them, he fixed an arrow to his
- 35:37Speaker 1: bow and cried to the king's son, do you prefer
- 35:40Speaker 1: to die by the arrow or by the sword? The
- 35:43Speaker 1: king's son asked, pardon, and true Steele said, I pardon
- 35:47Speaker 1: you also the second life, but I warn you never
- 35:51Speaker 1: come here again after your wife, for I will not
- 35:53Speaker 1: pardon you anymore. I shall kill you on the spot,
- 35:57Speaker 1: saying that, he carried the wife back to the cave,
- 36:00Speaker 1: and the prince remained, thinking all the time how he
- 36:02Speaker 1: could save her. At last, he said to himself, why
- 36:06Speaker 1: should I fear Trusteele when I have yet two lives,
- 36:09Speaker 1: one of which he has made me a present, and
- 36:11Speaker 1: one of which is my own. So he decided to
- 36:14Speaker 1: return again to the cave. Next morning, when true Steele
- 36:17Speaker 1: was absent, he saw his wife and said to her,
- 36:20Speaker 1: let us fly. She objected, saying it is of no
- 36:24Speaker 1: use to fly when true Steele would certainly overtake us. However,
- 36:28Speaker 1: her husband forced her to go with him, and they
- 36:30Speaker 1: went away. True Steele, however, overtook them quickly and shouted,
- 36:35Speaker 1: wait a bit, this time, I will not pardon you.
- 36:39Speaker 1: The prince became afraid and begged him to pardon him
- 36:41Speaker 1: also this time, and tru Steele said to him, you
- 36:45Speaker 1: know I promised to give you three lives, so now
- 36:48Speaker 1: I give you this one. But it is the third
- 36:51Speaker 1: and last. Now you have only one life, so go
- 36:56Speaker 1: home and do not risk losing the one life God
- 36:59Speaker 1: gave you. Then the Prince, seeing he could do nothing
- 37:03Speaker 1: against this great power, turned back, reflecting, however, all the time,
- 37:07Speaker 1: as to the best way of getting his wife back
- 37:09Speaker 1: from True Steel. At last he remembered what his brothers
- 37:13Speaker 1: in law had said to him when they gave him
- 37:15Speaker 1: their feathers. Then he said to himself, I will try
- 37:19Speaker 1: this fourth time to get my wife back. If I
- 37:21Speaker 1: come to trouble, I will burn the feathers and see
- 37:24Speaker 1: if my brothers in law will come to help me. Hereupon,
- 37:28Speaker 1: he went back once more towards the cavern wherein his
- 37:31Speaker 1: wife was kept, And as he saw from a distance
- 37:35Speaker 1: that True Steel was just leaving the cave, he went
- 37:38Speaker 1: near and showed himself to his wife. She was surprised
- 37:41Speaker 1: and terrified, and exclaimed, are you so tired of your
- 37:45Speaker 1: life that you come back again to me? Then he
- 37:48Speaker 1: told her about his brothers in law, and how each
- 37:50Speaker 1: of them had given him one of their feathers and
- 37:53Speaker 1: had promised to come to help him whenever he needed
- 37:56Speaker 1: their assistance. Therefore, added he, I am come once more
- 38:01Speaker 1: to take you away. Let us start at once. This
- 38:05Speaker 1: they did the same moment. However, True Steel heard of
- 38:08Speaker 1: it and shouted from afar, stop, prince, you cannot run away.
- 38:14Speaker 1: And then the king's son, seeing True Steel so near him,
- 38:17Speaker 1: quickly took out a flint and tinder box, struck some sparks,
- 38:21Speaker 1: and burned all three feathers. Whilst he was doing this, however,
- 38:25Speaker 1: True Steel reached him and with his sword, cut the
- 38:28Speaker 1: prince in two parts. That moment came the King of Dragons,
- 38:33Speaker 1: rushing with his whole army of dragons, the King of
- 38:36Speaker 1: Falcons with all his falcons, and the King of Eagles
- 38:39Speaker 1: with his mighty host of eagles, and they all attacked
- 38:42Speaker 1: True Steel. Torrents of blood were shed, But after all
- 38:46Speaker 1: True Steel caught up the woman and fled away. Then
- 38:51Speaker 1: the three kings gave all their attention to their brother
- 38:53Speaker 1: in law and determined to bring him back to life.
- 38:56Speaker 1: Thereupon they asked three of the most active dragons which
- 38:59Speaker 1: of them could bring them in the shortest time some
- 39:02Speaker 1: water from the river Jordan. One said I could bring
- 39:07Speaker 1: it in half an hour, The second said, I can
- 39:10Speaker 1: go and return in ten minutes. The third dragon said
- 39:13Speaker 1: I can bring it in nine seconds. Then the three
- 39:16Speaker 1: kings said to the last one, go dragon, and make haste.
- 39:21Speaker 1: Then this dragon exhibited all his fiery might, and in
- 39:24Speaker 1: nine seconds, as he had promised, he came back with
- 39:27Speaker 1: water from the Jordan. The kings took the water and
- 39:31Speaker 1: poured it on the places where the prince was wounded,
- 39:33Speaker 1: and as they did so, the wound closed up. The
- 39:36Speaker 1: body joined together, and the king's son sprang up alive.
- 39:41Speaker 1: Then the three kings counseled him, now that you are
- 39:44Speaker 1: saved from death, go home, But the prince answered he would,
- 39:49Speaker 1: at all events yet once more try to get his
- 39:52Speaker 1: wife back. The kings his brothers in law again spoke,
- 39:56Speaker 1: do not try again. Indeed, you will be law if
- 40:00Speaker 1: you go, for now you have only one life, which
- 40:03Speaker 1: God gave you. The king's son, however, would not listen
- 40:07Speaker 1: to their advice. So the kings told him, well, then,
- 40:12Speaker 1: if you are still determined to go, at least, do
- 40:15Speaker 1: not take your wife away immediately, but tell her to
- 40:19Speaker 1: ask True Steele where his strength lies, and then come
- 40:23Speaker 1: and tell us in order that we may help you
- 40:26Speaker 1: to conquer him. So the prince went secretly and saw
- 40:30Speaker 1: his wife and told her how she could persuade Trusteel
- 40:34Speaker 1: to tell her where his strength was. He then left
- 40:37Speaker 1: her and went away. When Trustil came home, the wife
- 40:41Speaker 1: of the king's son asked him, tell me, now, where
- 40:45Speaker 1: is your great strength? He answered, my wife, my strength
- 40:51Speaker 1: is in my sword. Then she began to pray and
- 40:54Speaker 1: turned to his sword. When Trustil saw that, he burst
- 40:58Speaker 1: out laughing and said, oh, foolish woman, my strength is
- 41:02Speaker 1: not in my sword, but in my bow and arrows.
- 41:06Speaker 1: Then she turned towards the bow and arrows and prayed.
- 41:08Speaker 1: Then True Steel said, I see, my wife, you have
- 41:11Speaker 1: a clever teacher who has taught you to find out
- 41:14Speaker 1: where my strength lies. I can almost say that your
- 41:17Speaker 1: husband is living, and it is he who teaches you.
- 41:20Speaker 1: But she assured him that no one taught her, for
- 41:23Speaker 1: she had no longer any one to do so. After
- 41:26Speaker 1: some days her husband came, and when she told him
- 41:29Speaker 1: she could not learn anything from True Steel, he said,
- 41:32Speaker 1: try again and went away. When True Steel came home,
- 41:36Speaker 1: she began again to ask him the secret of his strength.
- 41:40Speaker 1: Then he answered her, since you think so much of
- 41:42Speaker 1: my strength, I will tell you truly where it is.
- 41:45Speaker 1: And he continued far away from this place. There is
- 41:49Speaker 1: a very high mountain. In the mountain there is a fox,
- 41:52Speaker 1: and the fox there is a heart, and the heart
- 41:54Speaker 1: there is a bird, and in this bird is my strength.
- 41:57Speaker 1: It is no easy task, however, to catch that fox,
- 42:00Speaker 1: for she can transform herself into a multitude of creatures.
- 42:04Speaker 1: Next day, as soon as Trusteele left the cave, the
- 42:07Speaker 1: king's son came to his wife, and she told him
- 42:10Speaker 1: all she had learned. Then the prince hurried away to
- 42:13Speaker 1: his brothers in law, who waited, all three impatient to
- 42:16Speaker 1: see him and to hear where was the strength of
- 42:19Speaker 1: True Steel. When they heard, all three went away at once,
- 42:23Speaker 1: with the prince defined the mountain. Having got there, they
- 42:26Speaker 1: set the eagles to chase the fox, But the fox
- 42:29Speaker 1: ran to a lake which was in the midst of
- 42:31Speaker 1: the mountain, and changed herself into a six winged golden bird.
- 42:35Speaker 1: Then the falcons pursued her and drove her out of
- 42:37Speaker 1: the lake, and she flew into the clouds, but there
- 42:40Speaker 1: the dragons hurried after her. So she changed herself again
- 42:44Speaker 1: into a fox and began to run along the earth,
- 42:47Speaker 1: but the rest of the eagles stopped her, surrounded her,
- 42:50Speaker 1: and caught her. The three kings then ordered the fox
- 42:53Speaker 1: to be killed and her heart to be taken out.
- 42:56Speaker 1: A great fire was made and the bird was taken
- 42:59Speaker 1: out of the heart and burnt. That very moment, True
- 43:02Speaker 1: Steel fell down dead, and the prince took his wife
- 43:06Speaker 1: and returned home with her. End of Section nine.
