- 0:29Speaker 1: you stand with on x so cal You. I know
- 0:37Speaker 1: people have been anxiously awaiting any sort of news on
- 0:41Speaker 1: you're theft. Yeah, when you're recovering all your things that
- 0:45Speaker 1: were stolen from your house, when you uh, very judiciously
- 0:52Speaker 1: or or you know the opposite of that, didn't shoot
- 0:56Speaker 1: the people as as they stole your stuff, but you
- 0:59Speaker 1: recover some of it. It turned up, yes, Cal's stolen goods. Yeah.
- 1:05Speaker 1: And and folks out there, if you've been anxiously waiting
- 1:09Speaker 1: for news of this, you were doing a lot better
- 1:11Speaker 1: than I was. I'd just fully given up on anything,
- 1:14Speaker 1: but I got a couple of things happened. I got
- 1:18Speaker 1: a letter from the credit bureau letting me know that
- 1:21Speaker 1: I had been turned down for a Victoria's Secret Pink
- 1:25Speaker 1: credit card due to um my credit being frozen, which
- 1:30Speaker 1: is something I did uh to prevent any sort of
- 1:33Speaker 1: theft because personal information. Not understand what you're talking about.
- 1:38Speaker 1: So a bunch of my personal information was stolen. Right.
- 1:42Speaker 1: So I was trying to refinance my place and get
- 1:45Speaker 1: all my taxes done and I was just laying out
- 1:48Speaker 1: and they just scooped that whole package up took off
- 1:51Speaker 1: with it. Oh and then they, masquerading as you, tried
- 1:54Speaker 1: to get a Victoria's Secret Pink credit card. Correct. I
- 1:57Speaker 1: don't know there was such a thing. Neither did. All
- 1:58Speaker 1: the benefits were great. Um, and uh, so that was
- 2:03Speaker 1: one thing that happened. And then so I called Boseman
- 2:05Speaker 1: p D And said, hey, that's going on. And then uh,
- 2:09Speaker 1: a little while later or several months later, this all
- 2:13Speaker 1: happened back in March. Um July fourth weekend. Um, I guess.
- 2:20Speaker 1: The Monday after July fourth weekend, I get a phone
- 2:22Speaker 1: call from a bank in Billings, Montana, saying, hey, we
- 2:27Speaker 1: have your passport here. Did you try to cash your
- 2:31Speaker 1: check on Friday? I was like nope, and they're like, yeah,
- 2:37Speaker 1: we thought it was a little suspicious. And when we
- 2:39Speaker 1: said it was suspicious, the folks trying to cash the
- 2:41Speaker 1: check through the drive through just took off. I was like, okay,
- 2:46Speaker 1: and your passport laying there they checks, No, they had,
- 2:52Speaker 1: so they had forged a check from a local gas
- 2:57Speaker 1: station to me like like a paid like a paste
- 3:02Speaker 1: up check payment check with my name on it, and
- 3:06Speaker 1: then attempted to cash that using my passport as a
- 3:12Speaker 1: valid idea. Um. So I was like, well, that's good information,
- 3:20Speaker 1: and had them called the police and gave him the
- 3:22Speaker 1: case number. Then I called the police and and then, um,
- 3:27Speaker 1: all of a sudden, they became pretty interested in it
- 3:29Speaker 1: because I think it like elevated the crime a little bit,
- 3:32Speaker 1: and because now they're out forging checks and they ultimately
- 3:38Speaker 1: did make an arrest. And it was just really and
- 3:43Speaker 1: I just learned of this today because I finally got
- 3:45Speaker 1: somewhere back. Yeah, are you gonna get to confront them?
- 3:48Speaker 1: I doubt it. But it was so funny because the
- 3:51Speaker 1: detectives like, yeah, I would really watch your credit because, uh,
- 3:59Speaker 1: this guy told me that he's been doing this five
- 4:02Speaker 1: days a week, eight hours a day. He puts a
- 4:05Speaker 1: full week, he puts in a full week. He's like,
- 4:08Speaker 1: just like you are right clocking in at the office.
- 4:10Speaker 1: He's like, he has been forging checks eight hours a day,
- 4:14Speaker 1: five days a week. Huh. Yeah, how local is he local?
- 4:19Speaker 1: Is he the dude that actually stole your ship? Or
- 4:21Speaker 1: do they give your stuff to this dude? I'm telling
- 4:24Speaker 1: you from what I saw happen in my garage, Yeah,
- 4:29Speaker 1: they would have had to have found a new path
- 4:32Speaker 1: in life still in the criminal line of things. Uh,
- 4:36Speaker 1: to elevate to check forgery from what I saw in
- 4:39Speaker 1: the garage, the folks who robbed the garage, I don't
- 4:43Speaker 1: think you're capable of the foragery game. The forty hour
- 4:47Speaker 1: week foragery game week for so you might get to
- 4:50Speaker 1: meet someone involved in this criminal enterprise. It's yeah, it's
- 4:53Speaker 1: possible if for some reason they want me to test
- 4:57Speaker 1: fire or something like that. No, uh, of your heard
- 5:01Speaker 1: this story the flip flop Flusher's granddad had a hunting
- 5:05Speaker 1: cabin and some criminals, some crooks robbed his hunting cabin.
- 5:12Speaker 1: Later the cops caught the guys and this is an
- 5:15Speaker 1: interesting move. The cops then bring the guy over, just
- 5:20Speaker 1: drive him over to visit with the grandfather. So says
- 5:27Speaker 1: that his grandfather gets a cop comes to the door
- 5:29Speaker 1: and says, hey, we got the guy that robbed your place.
- 5:33Speaker 1: He's handcuffed in the back of my car. So seth
- 5:37Speaker 1: grandfather just gets to go out to lay his eyes
- 5:40Speaker 1: on him, poke him with the stack. Yeah, and Seth
- 5:44Speaker 1: said that his grandfather said to the guy, you know,
- 5:47Speaker 1: I would have killed you if I caught you, And
- 5:49Speaker 1: that was how they left it. Wow that that that's great.
- 5:57Speaker 1: Always tell that to him to and be like, boy,
- 5:59Speaker 1: you just don't know how closed you were. You didn't
- 6:03Speaker 1: have it in me to shoot you. Man. Yeah, what if?
- 6:06Speaker 1: Just a funky deal. But anyway, passports back, so it fine.
- 6:10Speaker 1: If I was a detective, I would dust that they did. Yeah,
- 6:14Speaker 1: so it was dusting it for fingers and I did
- 6:17Speaker 1: have a fingerprint on it. Yeah yeah, I assume not mine.
- 6:22Speaker 1: Um so, so, uh is it cool at the State Department?
- 6:26Speaker 1: Do you get to keep on using your passport even
- 6:28Speaker 1: though it was like compassport number? Okay? Yeah, so no
- 6:33Speaker 1: matter what kind of shenanigans they were trying to pull
- 6:35Speaker 1: with your passport, It's not like a credit card where
- 6:37Speaker 1: they'd like issue you a new one all of a sudden.
- 6:39Speaker 1: You just get to keep running. I mean you can
- 6:41Speaker 1: go through, jump through a bunch of hoops and get
- 6:43Speaker 1: like a new Social Security number, new passport number. But
- 6:47Speaker 1: it it takes some some effort and from what like
- 6:51Speaker 1: I called the Social Social Security Administration and actually just
- 6:56Speaker 1: phenomenal customer service. Um. But the fellow I talked to,
- 7:02Speaker 1: he's like, you know, he's like, this is what we've
- 7:04Speaker 1: done for you, Like it's flagged in the system. Um.
- 7:07Speaker 1: The way this works is a little funky. Is like,
- 7:09Speaker 1: it's still gonna be very frustrating to you. Um. But
- 7:13Speaker 1: what we see is somebody's going to hold down a
- 7:18Speaker 1: job for a year and not pay their taxes with
- 7:22Speaker 1: your Social Security number, and then we'll call you and
- 7:30Speaker 1: be like, why aren't you paying your taxes? And then
- 7:34Speaker 1: you'll say, well, actually I have, but here's and then
- 7:38Speaker 1: we'll look back in your record, we'll see the thing
- 7:40Speaker 1: and you'll be fine. He's like, it's not gonna be fun.
- 7:42Speaker 1: You're not gonna like it. But he's like, you'll be fine.
- 7:46Speaker 1: You really take it all this quite well. Cal I
- 7:48Speaker 1: think it's just so far out of my hands, you know.
- 7:50Speaker 1: It's like, I got other things to worry about. And
- 7:53Speaker 1: this is like five months in the making. It was March. Yeah, yeah, Spencer,
- 8:00Speaker 1: you don't have c one niner. I don't fresh from
- 8:03Speaker 1: the testing ground. I I have the proven cleanest bill
- 8:06Speaker 1: of health in this room for COVID. I would imagine
- 8:09Speaker 1: when they come in and tell you don't have it,
- 8:11Speaker 1: I love it. Do you have did you have a scare? Um? So,
- 8:14Speaker 1: my wife and I had cold symptoms over the weekend.
- 8:18Speaker 1: But the issue with COVID, right is if you look
- 8:21Speaker 1: up symptoms, it's like everything except stubbing your toe is
- 8:25Speaker 1: on the list. So body a headache, cough, And if
- 8:29Speaker 1: there wasn't a global pandemic, you would just be like, oh,
- 8:31Speaker 1: this is a head giral and and fine enough to
- 8:33Speaker 1: like even go into work. Um, but we have a
- 8:37Speaker 1: wedding coming up in three days. We wanted to the
- 8:39Speaker 1: responsible thing get tested. So we did and he right,
- 8:42Speaker 1: Steve like I didn't have any anxiety leading up to
- 8:45Speaker 1: were pretty confident. But then like that fifteen minute wait
- 8:47Speaker 1: between like getting swabbed and then like them coming in,
- 8:50Speaker 1: then it like starts to build and build and build.
- 8:52Speaker 1: Oh yeah, and you get free. They're gonna throw a
- 8:54Speaker 1: false positive at fifteen minute. Wait, you can you can
- 8:57Speaker 1: get rapid testing, right, there's like standard testing. It's like
- 9:01Speaker 1: five to ten days, three days. Ye. Well yeah, the
- 9:04Speaker 1: state of Alaska now won't accept rapid tests. They did
- 9:07Speaker 1: say it's it is less accurate than the other ones.
- 9:10Speaker 1: It throws a lot of falls. I've heard, I heard,
- 9:13Speaker 1: I heard it's get that throws a lot of false positives. Well,
- 9:18Speaker 1: that's got a it's got a reputation. I don't know
- 9:20Speaker 1: that's true or not. That wouldn't come to me for
- 9:21Speaker 1: your COVID information. Uh we So I was telling Calda's
- 9:27Speaker 1: two nights ago? Was it two nights ago? We went
- 9:31Speaker 1: down to where my kid fishes suckers and took a
- 9:34Speaker 1: spear gun down there and got into the um, got
- 9:39Speaker 1: into the water with a spear gun, and like you
- 9:43Speaker 1: could see about twelve inches, so the spear guns like
- 9:47Speaker 1: two ft long, So all the suckers are zipping in
- 9:50Speaker 1: front of your face like sort of between you had
- 9:53Speaker 1: to hold a spear gun back behind your head and
- 9:56Speaker 1: reach back and pull the trigger in order to shoot
- 9:58Speaker 1: the soccers that you can see scooting across your face
- 10:01Speaker 1: mask as you dive through the holes. Somewhere in the
- 10:04Speaker 1: manual recommends against that. And then I would, I would.
- 10:09Speaker 1: I My buddy Greg Fonds is supposed to be sending
- 10:11Speaker 1: me a new Hawaiian, a real stubby. I want a
- 10:14Speaker 1: short nose Hawaiian sling. I got an eight footer in
- 10:17Speaker 1: the garage. I need a snub nose Hawaiian slang for
- 10:19Speaker 1: close work. So we gave up on that. That water
- 10:23Speaker 1: is so cold it was it was degrees. My kid
- 10:27Speaker 1: didn't think it was cold. Like kids, I don't know
- 10:28Speaker 1: what their problem is they getting the cold water down't
- 10:30Speaker 1: know what it's cold. I was so cold I couldn't
- 10:31Speaker 1: breathe through my snorkel because we were wearing one. We
- 10:35Speaker 1: were wearing one creek where a small mountain stream flows
- 10:41Speaker 1: into a bigger stream, and the bigger stream is much warmer,
- 10:44Speaker 1: and that small mountain stream is flowing in all silty
- 10:48Speaker 1: and cold, and the suckers are all laying in the
- 10:51Speaker 1: hole created by the inlet. So when you dive down
- 10:56Speaker 1: in that hole, yeah, I got any. I had like
- 10:58Speaker 1: forced myself to be able to breathe through a snorkel.
- 11:00Speaker 1: There was that cold. Now the follow up question is
- 11:04Speaker 1: going to be what are you doing with suckers? Sucker cakes? Yeah,
- 11:07Speaker 1: so I think you should explain sucker cakes because I've
- 11:10Speaker 1: I've had some of that. You're amalgamous dip between your
- 11:16Speaker 1: um multi species bag that you get sometimes, well, I'll
- 11:20Speaker 1: get to the sucker cake thing in a minute, yeah,
- 11:22Speaker 1: but I'll walk through that so when you dive down
- 11:23Speaker 1: and follow the bottom contour of the whole, like I said,
- 11:26Speaker 1: it's just suckers like kind of like banging into your
- 11:28Speaker 1: face masks, but you can't do anything about it. And
- 11:30Speaker 1: I was telling my kid, if you misidentify it hit
- 11:33Speaker 1: a white fish, you don't fish again for the rest
- 11:35Speaker 1: of our lives or whatever, because we'd be in a
- 11:37Speaker 1: serious violation because it's a game fish. Anyhow, we bailed
- 11:42Speaker 1: on that, much to his disappointment, and came back the
- 11:47Speaker 1: next night with rods and reels and after micro scouting,
- 11:51Speaker 1: like we knew that this whole head suckers, but our
- 11:54Speaker 1: understanding of that whole improved to where like like let's say,
- 12:01Speaker 1: I like, I'm looking at my laptop right now. I
- 12:03Speaker 1: used to know there are suckers like on the laptop,
- 12:07Speaker 1: but now I know that the suckers are at the
- 12:09Speaker 1: letter G. And we went back last night bam bam.
- 12:14Speaker 1: He went back with his neighborhood buddy this morning, Bam bam, bam.
- 12:19Speaker 1: Mountains suckers in our fridge now and we always talk
- 12:21Speaker 1: about in the big game world, like if for a
- 12:24Speaker 1: second you could just suck all the trees off the
- 12:29Speaker 1: mountain just real quick, because you know there's something there,
- 12:33Speaker 1: but it'd just be nice to know exactly where. I
- 12:36Speaker 1: have a different version of that, and it's that if
- 12:39Speaker 1: all the animals, you can do it by species, So
- 12:43Speaker 1: like all black bears had to shoot a flare up
- 12:46Speaker 1: in there, a pink one, and the deer was shooting
- 12:50Speaker 1: green one, and that would just be like color blind people, yanni, yeah,
- 12:55Speaker 1: so yeah, some kind of whatever, some kind of yeah
- 12:57Speaker 1: thing that's new that that's support. So even like Mark
- 13:00Speaker 1: Kenyon could participate, and we talked about it back in
- 13:07Speaker 1: the days of Pac Country. We would just imagine just
- 13:10Speaker 1: if you're a giant and you could just pick up
- 13:12Speaker 1: the mountain that we hunted a lot and jake and
- 13:14Speaker 1: turn it upside down and shake it and just see
- 13:17Speaker 1: what fell all of it as little kids are la.
- 13:20Speaker 1: I'll get back to my soccer story. But the lake
- 13:23Speaker 1: we grew up on, our dream was that, um, it
- 13:28Speaker 1: was complicated because it required that everybody had to go away.
- 13:30Speaker 1: Everybody lived on the lake had to leave because we
- 13:32Speaker 1: don't want other people seeing what we were about to see.
- 13:34Speaker 1: Everyone would leave and our lake would drain, and we
- 13:38Speaker 1: would have an hour or so to run out and
- 13:40Speaker 1: see what all is there, just to take stock, not
- 13:46Speaker 1: even to pick anything up, but to take stock of
- 13:49Speaker 1: what's there. And we talked about this a lot, and
- 13:52Speaker 1: my kid doesn't nobody just talk about this. And we're
- 13:54Speaker 1: up at our fish shack, and he was saying, wouldn't
- 13:56Speaker 1: it be amazing if we could drain all the water
- 13:59Speaker 1: out of cove and see what's in there? I think
- 14:04Speaker 1: about that too, because you're always like, you know, you
- 14:06Speaker 1: fish a little bit harder when you're like, I know,
- 14:11Speaker 1: if I just try a little something different or whatever,
- 14:13Speaker 1: like I'm gonna find like that big one. Wouldn't you
- 14:17Speaker 1: just be disheartening if you're like, oh, it turns out
- 14:20Speaker 1: the perch in this lake do only get six inches?
- 14:25Speaker 1: Because there was a guy named Mr. Playing who lived
- 14:28Speaker 1: he had a cabin across from our house's mostly summer cottages.
- 14:31Speaker 1: At the time, Mr Playing had developed a pioneer to
- 14:35Speaker 1: technology he called speed trolling. He liked this troll real
- 14:37Speaker 1: fast for northerns and he had one of those old
- 14:41Speaker 1: fish finders that took a pencil. Whoa you ever see those?
- 14:45Speaker 1: We used to have one to my dad had when
- 14:46Speaker 1: I was a little kid. It's like a pencil and
- 14:49Speaker 1: at the end of fishing, you can take the whole
- 14:51Speaker 1: damn scroll of paper and walk around showing people the scroll.
- 14:57Speaker 1: It spits out a never ending six inch wide scroll
- 15:00Speaker 1: paper with the pencil. Oh yeah. Mr Playing used to
- 15:06Speaker 1: run around with a hunk of this scroll showing that.
- 15:09Speaker 1: He's like, there's a five ft in northern in that lake,
- 15:13Speaker 1: and everybody bleed him because like technology doesn't lie. It
- 15:17Speaker 1: was a big pencil mark and Mr. Playing scroll, So
- 15:20Speaker 1: if you drained it, you'd be able to be like,
- 15:22Speaker 1: is it or is it not? That guy used to
- 15:24Speaker 1: catch shiploaded pike. I'll tell you what speed drawn we
- 15:27Speaker 1: We had a version of that that's not quite as satisfying.
- 15:30Speaker 1: It's just like draining the entire water body. But whenever,
- 15:35Speaker 1: for the U S Fish and Wireless Service, we had
- 15:36Speaker 1: a lake in southeastern South Dakota that it got too
- 15:39Speaker 1: over on with trash fish like every type of carp
- 15:43Speaker 1: grass carp common carp silver car big head carp um,
- 15:47Speaker 1: and then they just like cleaned out all the vegetation
- 15:49Speaker 1: was an incredibly popular body of water for people in
- 15:54Speaker 1: that area, so they decided to kill off the entire lake. Um.
- 15:57Speaker 1: So we went out there with roting known which is
- 16:00Speaker 1: like takes I think it takes the oxygen out of
- 16:02Speaker 1: the water and it kills all the fish and then
- 16:04Speaker 1: everything comes on the surface. Well what is it. It's
- 16:08Speaker 1: derived from a South American plant. Oh, and it inhibits
- 16:12Speaker 1: the fish's ability to remove oxygen the water. So it's
- 16:16Speaker 1: like it's like messing with their gills. You mean you
- 16:20Speaker 1: don't even fish like that. Yeah, I've seen the video. Yeah,
- 16:23Speaker 1: but we did that, and it's like steel poisoners. We
- 16:27Speaker 1: did that in this entire lake and you're like, oh,
- 16:30Speaker 1: while I in here, like, oh man, there are way
- 16:33Speaker 1: more perch than you would think, and like, well, like
- 16:36Speaker 1: this the rosier picture than what you expected. Um, with
- 16:39Speaker 1: the exception everything being dead. Yeah, that's right, that's right. Uh.
- 16:45Speaker 1: And they don't they don't come back to life like
- 16:46Speaker 1: when you're shocking them. When well, that may or may
- 16:50Speaker 1: not be because where we witnessed it, the effects wear off.
- 16:56Speaker 1: They would go to a side slough and they would
- 17:01Speaker 1: rock off the tributary leading into the side. Slow poison
- 17:05Speaker 1: the side slough and they were saying that if you
- 17:07Speaker 1: open a back up and let water come in, the
- 17:09Speaker 1: fish will pull out and be fine. Yeah, and that
- 17:12Speaker 1: was part of this. This lake had some like natural
- 17:14Speaker 1: springs that we had to constantly keep wroteing known like
- 17:17Speaker 1: right there where that fresh water was coming in, gotcha
- 17:20Speaker 1: to keep it lethal. Have you ever shocked fish when
- 17:23Speaker 1: you're in that old job? Oh yeah, plenty. Yeah, that's
- 17:26Speaker 1: interesting too, that you can you can shock fish and
- 17:28Speaker 1: not kill them, but you get your settings a certain way,
- 17:31Speaker 1: and a beaver might come by and you'll like waylay
- 17:33Speaker 1: that beaver because the voltage is set where would be
- 17:36Speaker 1: lethal for a beaver but not lethal for a fish.
- 17:39Speaker 1: One of the really uh like surprising parts of that
- 17:42Speaker 1: is we shocked for flatheads specifically one day, and they
- 17:45Speaker 1: take like a much lower voltage than most fish, which
- 17:49Speaker 1: was bigger, really surprising. You would think that like, uh, like, okay,
- 17:53Speaker 1: we're gonna go find pan fish, right, so let's just
- 17:56Speaker 1: like crank this thing down. But now we're gonna go
- 17:58Speaker 1: seek out flatheads, so we gotta crank it way up
- 18:00Speaker 1: and just make sure we're like shocking everything in the area.
- 18:02Speaker 1: But that's not the case, it's bigger at once lower
- 18:05Speaker 1: like if you jumped in there, you'd be screwed. If
- 18:07Speaker 1: you got to shock at small fisher situation too. Uh.
- 18:12Speaker 1: Shocked the South Fork of the Snake, like extremely extremely
- 18:17Speaker 1: popular Stretcher River um on the South Fork of the
- 18:21Speaker 1: Snake in Idaho, and shocked with Idaho fishing game. And
- 18:26Speaker 1: it was with the head of Fisheries and Brent High
- 18:30Speaker 1: or Brett High and uh, he's he's like a local Blackfoot,
- 18:34Speaker 1: Idaho guy, and I'm just amazed at how many fish
- 18:41Speaker 1: come up to the surface in this very small side
- 18:44Speaker 1: channel that we wasn't shocked. And he's like, oh yeah,
- 18:47Speaker 1: He's like everybody talks about how there's four thousand trout
- 18:51Speaker 1: per mile. He's like, but there's also seven thousand white
- 18:56Speaker 1: fish per mile, He's like. And then he's kind of
- 19:00Speaker 1: like went on and on and on. It was just
- 19:02Speaker 1: an insane amount of life, but it is um. Yeah,
- 19:07Speaker 1: unless you get to witness shocking, it's like you just
- 19:12Speaker 1: can't fathom how much life is in some of this stuff.
- 19:14Speaker 1: I was in the Philippines and we're doing Uh. I
- 19:19Speaker 1: was doing a magazine story where I was with this
- 19:21Speaker 1: crew and they were doing like a first descent, you know,
- 19:23Speaker 1: down the river, which is cool. It was fun and
- 19:26Speaker 1: in Central Highlands will lose on island and one day
- 19:30Speaker 1: we're just camped down the river bank and we're with this.
- 19:33Speaker 1: It's this area that's like the Klinga tribe lives there,
- 19:37Speaker 1: so you have to kind of get permission from the
- 19:38Speaker 1: Klingon and then the Klingon would make you take other
- 19:42Speaker 1: like take Klinga dudes. We have these two dudes, these
- 19:45Speaker 1: two Kolinga dudes with us on this trip. And some
- 19:50Speaker 1: guy they know we were camped down the beach and
- 19:51Speaker 1: some guy comes along. They knew who the guy was.
- 19:54Speaker 1: And this guy comes along. He's got a giant he's
- 19:57Speaker 1: got a backpack made out of a giant thing of
- 20:00Speaker 1: a giant detergent bottle, like if you bought a huge
- 20:04Speaker 1: square thing of laundry detergent kind of container, right, and
- 20:11Speaker 1: he had it made into a backpack with ropes and
- 20:14Speaker 1: in it. He had car batteries coming off the car batteries.
- 20:20Speaker 1: He had two handheld wands, and he's got a dude
- 20:24Speaker 1: with him that has like a beat packing two batteries.
- 20:28Speaker 1: He's got two batteries, two car batteries damned, and a
- 20:33Speaker 1: backpack and two metal wands, and he's got a dude
- 20:38Speaker 1: with him who's got a mini beach saying hooked on
- 20:40Speaker 1: two sticks. And these guys come down the river and
- 20:45Speaker 1: he would get up on a rock and his body
- 20:48Speaker 1: to get up on a rock, and then his body
- 20:52Speaker 1: would stick that beach saying down below the rock, and
- 20:56Speaker 1: then he would wave those wands all around under that
- 21:00Speaker 1: rock and it come in and slow that dude to
- 21:02Speaker 1: lift that beach saying up and ship loads of shrimp
- 21:05Speaker 1: and crabs in there like electro shocking them out of there.
- 21:10Speaker 1: And they got a big it's a long story. We
- 21:14Speaker 1: wand up with a bunch of this stuff, the shrimp crabs,
- 21:16Speaker 1: and the guy's gotta they get a big log burning
- 21:20Speaker 1: and they roll the log over so it's ember side
- 21:22Speaker 1: up and then just lay all that ship down that
- 21:26Speaker 1: log on the glowing embers and just lay there for
- 21:29Speaker 1: a while. Then that's a great move. No, yeah, And
- 21:32Speaker 1: I had all my fish and equipment with me because
- 21:33Speaker 1: I was like, I'm gonna catch so many fish, like
- 21:35Speaker 1: first ascent of a river. Like listen, man, there's not
- 21:40Speaker 1: a thing in those rivers. Everything is dead you'd go
- 21:43Speaker 1: to a fish market there. It's like their fish market
- 21:46Speaker 1: is stuff the size of your pinky, like, oh, and
- 21:49Speaker 1: a whale shark, but like there's no sort of like
- 21:53Speaker 1: all the things because they fish with poison, fish with explosives.
- 21:59Speaker 1: It's like a myth that, um, the myth that like
- 22:04Speaker 1: developing nations would somehow have uh you know, pristine resource pools.
- 22:13Speaker 1: It's a myth. People are hungry, man, They just kill
- 22:18Speaker 1: everything anyway you can get your hands on it. Buddy
- 22:21Speaker 1: of mine is fishing the Ontaman Islands, which is uh
- 22:26Speaker 1: like uh kind of a border uh series of islands
- 22:32Speaker 1: owned by India, And the guy was explaining to him
- 22:37Speaker 1: the fishery, like why that spot is so good. He's like, yeah,
- 22:41Speaker 1: there's no arsenic fishing here m hm. And yeah Michigan kid,
- 22:48Speaker 1: buddy of mine is like arsenic fishing. And I was like, yeah, no,
- 22:52Speaker 1: arsenic like gets a big deal. And he's like, hey, yeah,
- 22:58Speaker 1: I would imagine it's a bad Her back to my
- 23:01Speaker 1: soccer is real quick. The so I think I'm making
- 23:05Speaker 1: a video tonight with my kid on how we make
- 23:07Speaker 1: soccer cakes. So hear me out, you flay the socker.
- 23:13Speaker 1: You got a sucker flay. Then you remove the rib
- 23:16Speaker 1: from the soccer, just like take the rib bone off.
- 23:19Speaker 1: Then you skin the soccer. Now you have a sucker
- 23:21Speaker 1: flay that's still riddled with the insane number of bones
- 23:26Speaker 1: that live in soccer flays. Then we cue it up
- 23:30Speaker 1: and like half inch pieces. Put that raw, pack it
- 23:36Speaker 1: into a food processor raw and you put a bunch
- 23:38Speaker 1: of trout in there too, pack it if you want,
- 23:41Speaker 1: pack it in the food processor and turn the food
- 23:43Speaker 1: process around and leave it in there until that raw
- 23:45Speaker 1: fish has turned into a batter. It's like a batter
- 23:51Speaker 1: of raw fish. While you making that face, it's not
- 23:55Speaker 1: it doesn't sound very appetizing. Okay, let me put it
- 23:59Speaker 1: this way, and then you make a moose m O
- 24:02Speaker 1: U S s. Yeah, but still U S s out
- 24:06Speaker 1: of raw fish moose. Still doesn't sound appetizing. But but
- 24:10Speaker 1: I'm I'm following there's a version where raw fish batter
- 24:12Speaker 1: doesn't sound. I'm sure it's gonna get good. This is
- 24:15Speaker 1: the best recipe, perhaps the best recipe ever invented. But
- 24:19Speaker 1: I'm just telling you, there's nobody that right now is
- 24:21Speaker 1: now listening in their car. And when you described food
- 24:25Speaker 1: processing soccer meat and drought meat raw. They're like, oh,
- 24:29Speaker 1: did I take my raw fish? And I pull it
- 24:31Speaker 1: out and I put it into a mixing bowl to
- 24:33Speaker 1: which I add bread crumb, eggs, prepared horse radish, mayo, herbs,
- 24:43Speaker 1: and all kinds of other good ship to eat, little
- 24:47Speaker 1: sour cream if you feel like whatever, hot sauce. How
- 24:49Speaker 1: does the fish batter smell? It smells very clean clean. Yeah,
- 24:56Speaker 1: it smells very clean. Um, they are a wonderful The
- 25:01Speaker 1: problems with sucker I should start by saying that's the
- 25:03Speaker 1: problems with suckers are that the texture. People people are
- 25:08Speaker 1: not crazy about the texture, and people are definitely not
- 25:11Speaker 1: crazy about the bones. So it's a mushy piece of
- 25:15Speaker 1: fish that's bony. But by going through this process that
- 25:19Speaker 1: I'm here talking about, those things become not an issue.
- 25:24Speaker 1: So I got my bread crumb, egg good stuff to eat,
- 25:26Speaker 1: horse radish and all that. Then I make little little
- 25:30Speaker 1: teeny uh flattened patties. So I take I make about
- 25:34Speaker 1: what you a meatball? I make a meatball with this batter.
- 25:39Speaker 1: I flatten the meat ball into something that resembles the
- 25:44Speaker 1: sort of dimensions, the relative dimensions of a pancake. But
- 25:48Speaker 1: it's much smaller fits in the palm of your hand.
- 25:51Speaker 1: I then roll this and coat that and panco then
- 25:56Speaker 1: I cook it in a pan until the pan was
- 26:00Speaker 1: golden brown. Then you now have something that's like if
- 26:03Speaker 1: if the people at Long john Silver's actually knew how
- 26:05Speaker 1: to cook. It's that crispy, right, crispy outside, beautiful like
- 26:13Speaker 1: fluffy inside. You've taken us, You've transported us, dude. Is
- 26:20Speaker 1: one of the best recipes to ever be invented, and
- 26:23Speaker 1: I'm thinking about filming it tonight. So what fish can't
- 26:26Speaker 1: you do this with? I don't know, do with anything?
- 26:28Speaker 1: You do with anything. We call them soccer cakes for
- 26:31Speaker 1: the reason. You know what I screwed up. I screwed
- 26:35Speaker 1: up a big chunk of halibut that you gave me
- 26:39Speaker 1: the other day. By the way, you're I mean, I'd
- 26:43Speaker 1: do it the same way because you just get sick
- 26:45Speaker 1: of bag and fish. But my god, that's a huge
- 26:48Speaker 1: Those are giant portions. Well those are those are family packs, man,
- 26:53Speaker 1: They're not meant for a single man. So I take
- 26:58Speaker 1: you know, it's I'm like, I wanted to take on
- 27:00Speaker 1: the challenge of cooking this whole huge chunk al but um,
- 27:06Speaker 1: you know perfectly, and I had a thermometer in there
- 27:09Speaker 1: and was doing it on the trigger um, which I
- 27:12Speaker 1: believe gives you even more leeway. And uh consequently pulled
- 27:18Speaker 1: it before the thing even got to Tampa according in
- 27:21Speaker 1: the temperature, because I just knew something wasn't right, and
- 27:24Speaker 1: sure enough it was super dry. But I turned that
- 27:28Speaker 1: into uh, you know, basically like fish sandwich. Yeah, and
- 27:35Speaker 1: absolutely phenomenal, very very good, to the point where I'm like,
- 27:40Speaker 1: this is what aliment should be good. Yeah. I feel
- 27:44Speaker 1: like with those big chunks, you gotta slice him in
- 27:45Speaker 1: a half sideways. Yeah, Oh, I Spencer explain. I can't
- 27:51Speaker 1: figure which of these things I want to explain first, Oh,
- 27:54Speaker 1: bad news for the um the squirrels eating dots off
- 27:59Speaker 1: other squirrels, and even reveal this now that I think
- 28:02Speaker 1: it's for another time. Spencer has not like that you
- 28:08Speaker 1: even brought it up. Spencer has not found a researcher
- 28:14Speaker 1: yet who knows what he's talking about. You need to
- 28:19Speaker 1: keep You need to do what you're doing science. When
- 28:21Speaker 1: you get an answer, you don't want to go to
- 28:23Speaker 1: the next researcher. Eventually you wind up. You need what
- 28:26Speaker 1: you'll do what corporations do is you'll need to go
- 28:29Speaker 1: hire a researcher and tell him I need you to
- 28:33Speaker 1: demonstrate to me that X is true. Got it? And
- 28:38Speaker 1: they're like, got it? So we'll leave that one hanging.
- 28:40Speaker 1: Our article forthcoming on if if squirrels bite the nuts
- 28:44Speaker 1: off of other squirrels and just say that yes, knowing
- 28:49Speaker 1: that they do, it'll be an exploration of of the
- 28:53Speaker 1: truth of that, the truth of that, And you better
- 28:57Speaker 1: keep working until you find the right person to talk
- 29:00Speaker 1: to who satisfies my curiosity. But in the meantime, explain,
- 29:08Speaker 1: explain the zone of death situation. The Zone of Death
- 29:13Speaker 1: is part of our Barroom Banter series. And I'm biased,
- 29:17Speaker 1: but our barroom manter stuff is my favorite stuff on
- 29:20Speaker 1: the Meat Eat Your website. Actually, I'll make a number
- 29:23Speaker 1: two Pet Dirk and anything Pat Dirkin writes is number one.
- 29:26Speaker 1: That's my favorite, and then barbroom banter stuff is my
- 29:28Speaker 1: second favorite. And barroom banter is meant to be wisdom
- 29:32Speaker 1: that will make you seem smart and interesting from a
- 29:35Speaker 1: bar stool when you're shooting the ship with your buddies
- 29:38Speaker 1: and you're like, well, did you know this? Do you
- 29:41Speaker 1: know squirrels we'll actually bite like that stuff like that exactly.
- 29:48Speaker 1: Who's who's playing on my toes? Oh yeah, sorry? So
- 29:51Speaker 1: the the zone of death. Um, first, when you talk
- 29:55Speaker 1: about yellow Stone actual park and it's mapping. If you're
- 29:59Speaker 1: not familiar, you don't live in bow has been like us. Um,
- 30:02Speaker 1: you might not know this, but Yellowstone extends into three states.
- 30:06Speaker 1: Of it is in Wyoming, two is in Montana, and
- 30:10Speaker 1: one percentage in Idaho. And this is bad. Never heard
- 30:14Speaker 1: the percentages before? This is because but but it predates
- 30:19Speaker 1: the states. Yes, eighty two Yellowston National Park was created.
- 30:24Speaker 1: It wasn't until twenty years later that those three states
- 30:27Speaker 1: gained statehood. So does unless I've never understood this well either,
- 30:35Speaker 1: But are you gonna explain how like where, how the
- 30:38Speaker 1: like what the state's role actually is in these states?
- 30:44Speaker 1: The states don't have much of a role at all,
- 30:47Speaker 1: it turns out, and that's that's all sort of part
- 30:50Speaker 1: of what creates this zone of death. Okay, So I
- 30:56Speaker 1: would I would argue that the most interesting part of
- 31:00Speaker 1: Yellowstone is that one percent in Idaho, despite it not
- 31:04Speaker 1: having a road, it has one road that's sort of
- 31:08Speaker 1: like goes through the very corner of it and that's it.
- 31:12Speaker 1: Other than that, it has some trails, It doesn't have
- 31:14Speaker 1: any campgrounds. Um, it has like one notable lake, it
- 31:20Speaker 1: butts up to some other like notable things like the
- 31:22Speaker 1: Nada Falls. It's very popular hiking destination in that part
- 31:25Speaker 1: of Yellowstone, but it's not technically in Idaho or the
- 31:28Speaker 1: Zone of death. So I'm following. Okay. When Wyoming was created,
- 31:36Speaker 1: the US Court System decided to give all of Yellowstone
- 31:41Speaker 1: to Wyoming's District Court. So the entire National Park, including
- 31:46Speaker 1: the sections that are in Montana and in Idaho, are
- 31:50Speaker 1: part of the Wyoming Court district. Okay, got it? Um?
- 31:57Speaker 1: Should I say my questions? Um? I think so? I
- 32:01Speaker 1: think so. Alright, So, so all of all of Yellowstone
- 32:04Speaker 1: is in the Wyoming Court District. Looks utterly baffled. Well,
- 32:08Speaker 1: I'm waiting patiently. Okay, okay, all of Yellowstone is in
- 32:14Speaker 1: Wyoming's Court district, despite the park being in three different states.
- 32:18Speaker 1: Now here's what would happen in this Zone of death
- 32:21Speaker 1: if you murdered somebody. Okay, say you were in the
- 32:25Speaker 1: Idaho portion of Yellowstone and you murdered somebody. How did
- 32:28Speaker 1: we get there? This? This will explain there. Yeah, this.
- 32:33Speaker 1: This looks like I say to Johnny, I'm like, hey,
- 32:35Speaker 1: you know good uh huckleberry spot Yep, yep, you might
- 32:40Speaker 1: want to go there at Monday at ten. I'm more
- 32:44Speaker 1: men like explaining district courts to murder. Okay, so this
- 32:48Speaker 1: this this hypothetically you drive, Yeah, this this hypothetical, we're steven. Yeah, logical.
- 33:00Speaker 1: Well you know about the states, the percentages and then
- 33:03Speaker 1: the killing of another human being, so obviously you're thing Okay,
- 33:08Speaker 1: So yeah, ford Za connection, Forza connection. This place, there's
- 33:12Speaker 1: this place in it happens Steve and Yanni are looking
- 33:16Speaker 1: for huckleberries over there illegally. I imagine you can't go
- 33:18Speaker 1: pick huckleberries and yellows. No, like there's a lot of
- 33:22Speaker 1: Yellowstone is a place where you can't. You go to
- 33:24Speaker 1: not be able to do things. But I believe that
- 33:27Speaker 1: you can. I think can pick a berry. I can't
- 33:34Speaker 1: pick up a deer antler. I was just there with
- 33:36Speaker 1: a park biologist and we found several arrowheads, bunch of
- 33:40Speaker 1: shed antlers. We touch that stuff, can't touch. It can't
- 33:43Speaker 1: touch shed antlers, can't touch. I believe you can same
- 33:48Speaker 1: way that you can catch fish in certain areas and
- 33:50Speaker 1: keep them. Like, in fact, if you catch lake trout
- 33:52Speaker 1: and Yelston Lake, you can't not keep it. The fish
- 33:56Speaker 1: is a good comparison. That's that's a good You can
- 33:59Speaker 1: eat a are in that park. Okay. I'm not sticking
- 34:02Speaker 1: up for the park. I wish it would just become
- 34:04Speaker 1: national forces. We can start close to it, Okay, on
- 34:09Speaker 1: ideological grounds. So you guys, you guys are legally or
- 34:14Speaker 1: illegally looking for huckleberries in Idaho's portion, say let's let's
- 34:19Speaker 1: keep the story going and just say that, Uh, you
- 34:22Speaker 1: don't know what we're doing with them, but we are
- 34:25Speaker 1: looking for huckle bay Okay, not necessarily picking and eating them.
- 34:28Speaker 1: Identifying huckleberryes in Idaho's portion of Yellostone National Park is
- 34:33Speaker 1: fifty square miles. It's really small. It's just a little slipper.
- 34:36Speaker 1: You barely even see it on the map. You guys
- 34:37Speaker 1: over there looking for huckleberries. Steve Kills Yanni, why, um,
- 34:44Speaker 1: just like you, I don't know, disagreement over whether you're
- 34:47Speaker 1: not You guys can eat huckleberries jealous of it's more entertaining,
- 34:54Speaker 1: like years of angst on us kill Steve Kills Yanni,
- 34:57Speaker 1: Steven I think years of like I I like, how
- 35:02Speaker 1: do I do it? And I just strangled, flat out
- 35:06Speaker 1: stranglem in the huckleberry bush and then I bury him
- 35:10Speaker 1: as they do in the woods in a As Norm
- 35:12Speaker 1: MacDonald points out, it's always a shallow grade. That's a
- 35:17Speaker 1: great one. So I put him in the shallow grade,
- 35:21Speaker 1: put the grid. It's gonna come dig me out. And
- 35:25Speaker 1: Steve fest is up to it. Immediately he says, I
- 35:27Speaker 1: did it. I did it. This is where he's at.
- 35:30Speaker 1: I did it. Everything that you're hearing is true. Steve
- 35:34Speaker 1: tells that to some sort of law enforcement. They take
- 35:37Speaker 1: you to Cheyenne. Okay, Cheyenne, Cheyenne, Wyoming. That's the state capital,
- 35:43Speaker 1: that is the hub of the District of Wyoming's court system. Okay,
- 35:48Speaker 1: is it not a federal crime because all of Yellowstone
- 35:54Speaker 1: National Park is in the Wyoming court District. Okay, entires.
- 36:00Speaker 1: So they take you four hundred seventy miles southeast to Cheyenne, Wyoming,
- 36:04Speaker 1: and then Steve says, well, the sixth Amendment allows me
- 36:09Speaker 1: to have a speedy, uh and fair trial. Right. So
- 36:13Speaker 1: then they're like, okay, well here we go. We're gonna
- 36:17Speaker 1: get this trial set up Now there is also the
- 36:21Speaker 1: vicinage clause, which means that you have the right to
- 36:25Speaker 1: a jury that comes from the district and the state
- 36:32Speaker 1: where you committed your crime. So what we now have
- 36:35Speaker 1: is this incredibly tight ven diagram of the state where
- 36:40Speaker 1: you committed the crime is Idaho, and the court district
- 36:43Speaker 1: where you committed the crime is Wyoming. So now the
- 36:48Speaker 1: prosecutors have to find a jury from within that fifty
- 36:53Speaker 1: square mile stretch of Idaho. Being on the jury that's Elliston.
- 36:59Speaker 1: Now here's the probably in there. There's there's not a
- 37:03Speaker 1: single person that lives there. So you are now allowed
- 37:08Speaker 1: to go free because they cannot give you a fair drawer,
- 37:11Speaker 1: a fair trial made up of your peers that came
- 37:15Speaker 1: from the court or excuse me, that came from the
- 37:18Speaker 1: court district and the state because they could only exist
- 37:21Speaker 1: in that fifty square mile area. You know, you run
- 37:24Speaker 1: the fact Checker series, you run the barroom Banner series.
- 37:28Speaker 1: I think that there needs to be sort of a
- 37:29Speaker 1: post modern sort of mash up where fact Checker fact
- 37:34Speaker 1: checks barroom. So this this because I just don't I
- 37:41Speaker 1: don't believe it. This legal loophole was brought up by
- 37:44Speaker 1: a Michigan State law professor in two thousand five in
- 37:48Speaker 1: an article that he published. I called him yesterday to
- 37:51Speaker 1: talk about this, and Uh, I had asked him, like,
- 37:57Speaker 1: if there's been any more in the Georgetown let me
- 38:02Speaker 1: find the Georgetown Law Review or something. Georgetown Law Journal
- 38:06Speaker 1: two thousand five. Brian coult is his name, and he's
- 38:10Speaker 1: like he wrote a piece being like, hey, you know
- 38:12Speaker 1: what murder someone. Initially he was looking at, um, how
- 38:18Speaker 1: if you come in a crime within a certain distance
- 38:21Speaker 1: of like a county line in a lot of states,
- 38:23Speaker 1: you can actually be tried in the other county despite
- 38:25Speaker 1: it not happening in that county. And he was looking
- 38:28Speaker 1: at how that can cause issues with The example he
- 38:32Speaker 1: was looking at was a crime that happened in Detroit
- 38:35Speaker 1: that was like kind of in the suburbs, but sort
- 38:37Speaker 1: of in an urban area, and it had a lot
- 38:39Speaker 1: of racial tension in that area. And so depending on
- 38:42Speaker 1: where this crime, UH was prosecuted at, would like totally
- 38:46Speaker 1: change what the outcome could be. That's what he was
- 38:48Speaker 1: starting to look at. And then he came across, UH,
- 38:51Speaker 1: this whole thing with Yellowstone and this issue. Now this
- 38:55Speaker 1: would not happen, say you guys had the same scenario,
- 38:58Speaker 1: but this happened in the Montana portion of Yellowstone, that
- 39:01Speaker 1: two percent of the Yellowstone National Park that's in mind.
- 39:03Speaker 1: We'd have a we'd have it would be all people
- 39:05Speaker 1: from Gardener. There's actually forty one people, forty one adults
- 39:09Speaker 1: that live in that zone. So they could you'd have
- 39:12Speaker 1: you telling me you'd have to go and that's your
- 39:15Speaker 1: jury pool. Yes, yep, they they would have to find
- 39:18Speaker 1: so and this this was actually in two thousand you know,
- 39:25Speaker 1: is if this ever happened, it could only be it
- 39:29Speaker 1: could only be tried to find that amount of times,
- 39:31Speaker 1: because the first thing they ask you during your juror
- 39:36Speaker 1: interview is have you ever served on a Yeah, you
- 39:42Speaker 1: could try. You could do it three times, assuming that
- 39:45Speaker 1: all forty of those people are eligible jurors and nobody
- 39:48Speaker 1: knew moves into the area. That's right as well. So
- 39:52Speaker 1: Brian Coult brought up this issue in his two thousand
- 39:54Speaker 1: five or article, and it was actually used in the
- 39:57Speaker 1: court of law. I think it was in two thousand
- 39:58Speaker 1: seven or two thousand eight. Somebody killed an elk in
- 40:02Speaker 1: Montana's portion of Yellowstone National Park and his lawyer, who
- 40:07Speaker 1: is now deceased. UM had brought up this Brian called
- 40:12Speaker 1: paper about the zone of death UM and how his
- 40:16Speaker 1: trial should have to take place in the Yellowstone portion
- 40:21Speaker 1: of Montana because that's where the crime happened at and
- 40:26Speaker 1: how they would have to get a jury from that area. UM.
- 40:29Speaker 1: The prosecutors had acknowledged that, like, this is an issue.
- 40:34Speaker 1: We this is going to be like a lot of
- 40:36Speaker 1: work for us to make this happen and like bring
- 40:39Speaker 1: charges on this person who shot this elk. And so
- 40:41Speaker 1: they offered this guy a plea deal, basically saying that like,
- 40:46Speaker 1: you can't fight this any further, UM, and you know,
- 40:49Speaker 1: if you take this then it's over with, right. But
- 40:52Speaker 1: he had said that, like this issue came up then
- 40:56Speaker 1: and it was a big problem unresolved. It was left unresolved.
- 40:59Speaker 1: And so I said, when in me killing Yanni, I
- 41:02Speaker 1: could do like I'll do aggravated assault, but I'm not
- 41:06Speaker 1: doing murder. They'd be like, okay, bro it it would
- 41:11Speaker 1: be it would it would like certainly drag out much
- 41:14Speaker 1: longer than that. And this guy who shot the elk
- 41:16Speaker 1: chose that option. He chose not to drag it out
- 41:18Speaker 1: and just took the plea deal. But this probably caught
- 41:20Speaker 1: believes that he could have uh forced their hand and
- 41:24Speaker 1: made them have the trial in this portion of Montana
- 41:28Speaker 1: where he killed the elk. Now. I asked Brian if
- 41:30Speaker 1: he would feel responsible for something or like what what
- 41:33Speaker 1: his feelings would be if Steve did gil go kill
- 41:36Speaker 1: Yanni while they were searching for huckle berries, and he said,
- 41:39Speaker 1: it's been it's been fifteen years. He would be really
- 41:42Speaker 1: really piste off if this happened because the government has
- 41:45Speaker 1: not acted on it. And Congress, he said, if they
- 41:48Speaker 1: decided tomorrow they wanted to change this, they could changes
- 41:50Speaker 1: it would take like three lines that he his example,
- 41:53Speaker 1: he said to take five minutes. Wouldn't literally take five minutes,
- 41:55Speaker 1: but he said he would take five minutes. That's how
- 41:57Speaker 1: quick this would be to fix this issue. Who said
- 42:00Speaker 1: to the zone of death? He didn't because he discovered
- 42:02Speaker 1: it and and his discovery of this has like uh
- 42:07Speaker 1: it it inspired a best selling novel, a New York
- 42:10Speaker 1: Times bestselling novel called free Fire, and author from Wyoming
- 42:14Speaker 1: wrote a book where an attorney goes and he kills
- 42:16Speaker 1: four campers in a zone of Yellowstone that has no
- 42:20Speaker 1: jurisdiction over Huckleberry's I don't know. It also inspired a movie.
- 42:26Speaker 1: I can't remember what it's called, like One Provision or
- 42:28Speaker 1: something like that. And now people are telling me, are
- 42:30Speaker 1: you guys familiar with the TV series Yellowstone? Yeah, that
- 42:35Speaker 1: show it. It came up in the Sunday episode like
- 42:39Speaker 1: three days ago. They talked about They refer to it
- 42:42Speaker 1: as the train station. I believe so that it's not
- 42:45Speaker 1: for a lack of awareness that the government hasn't changes.
- 42:48Speaker 1: He said, they just um like drag their feet. They
- 42:50Speaker 1: don't think it's a big deal. They think that if
- 42:52Speaker 1: something did happen, they could still like manipulate wording and
- 42:57Speaker 1: understandings to still get a prosecution. And he just basically
- 43:00Speaker 1: said that's no way to treat the constitution. And so
- 43:03Speaker 1: he would be really piste off if something happened, but
- 43:05Speaker 1: basically said the blood would be on the government's hands,
- 43:08Speaker 1: not his own. Mm hmm. It's dark. Yeah, work on
- 43:14Speaker 1: your hypothetical though, because you could have just had Steve
- 43:16Speaker 1: killing Elk and it would have been fine. Let's work
- 43:19Speaker 1: on this. This is more exciting thought. It's not that
- 43:23Speaker 1: it's not the zone of death, not the zone of
- 43:25Speaker 1: Elk death, all right, right, And they're like, Okay, the
- 43:27Speaker 1: cost to the county or the state of Wyoming in
- 43:31Speaker 1: order to to prosecute this the way it should be
- 43:34Speaker 1: is going to far exceed what we what we can afford, basically,
- 43:42Speaker 1: So I asked Brian if like their lack of changing
- 43:45Speaker 1: this is just pure laziness or what it is, and
- 43:47Speaker 1: he said, it's it's a lot laziness, but there is
- 43:50Speaker 1: a point to be made where someone didn't feel inspired
- 43:53Speaker 1: to change this. A few years after, Brian brought everyone
- 43:57Speaker 1: like national attention to in two thousand five, and he
- 44:00Speaker 1: said when they looked into changing it, that what would
- 44:03Speaker 1: then happen is Yellowstone would have some portions that are
- 44:07Speaker 1: now in the ninth Court Circuit and not the tenth.
- 44:10Speaker 1: Wyoming is in the tenth Montana and Idaho or in
- 44:13Speaker 1: the ninth and when it comes to like environmental issues,
- 44:17Speaker 1: that could like cause a lot of problems and open
- 44:20Speaker 1: up like some potentially big things that could happen because
- 44:24Speaker 1: now Yellowstone things can like but that already has they
- 44:28Speaker 1: already bring it to the ninth because they bring they
- 44:30Speaker 1: bring those lawsuits to the ninth because they know they
- 44:33Speaker 1: the like the anti hunting crowd brings lawsuits to the
- 44:37Speaker 1: is it the ninth that's in Missoula. Yeah, Like, if
- 44:40Speaker 1: you suon against the grizzly bear de listing or soon
- 44:43Speaker 1: against wolf de listing, you always want to make sure
- 44:45Speaker 1: it lands in Missoula because then you'll get a judge
- 44:48Speaker 1: who was like, oh, I don't want anybody to hurt
- 44:49Speaker 1: those poor things. And if you sue in the lands
- 44:52Speaker 1: of Wyoming, they'll be like, Wow, we're gonna go with
- 44:54Speaker 1: States Rights Mountain wildlife management. So that was that was
- 44:57Speaker 1: never the intention of this too, Like we're gonna manipulate
- 44:59Speaker 1: the so it gets in the tenth Court District or
- 45:01Speaker 1: anything like that. That's just like now a product, product
- 45:04Speaker 1: of it, and a reason that they likely will never
- 45:06Speaker 1: change it. Okay, two more geographical ones for him, walk
- 45:22Speaker 1: me through. Um, mcfarthest, mcfarthest. Have you guys heard of
- 45:26Speaker 1: this before? Only from you, buddy? Okay, Oh you didn't
- 45:30Speaker 1: coin that term. No, No, A statician did. In two
- 45:33Speaker 1: thousand nine. He coined mcfarthest statistician statistician good correction. Uh.
- 45:41Speaker 1: He coined that term in two thousand nine when he
- 45:43Speaker 1: was looking for what he thought might be the most
- 45:45Speaker 1: remote place in the lower forty eight. How how would
- 45:48Speaker 1: you guys measure remoteness. Oh, I've been to the most
- 45:51Speaker 1: remote place on the continent. No, we're talking lower for well,
- 45:55Speaker 1: I can tell you they did. There was a lot
- 45:57Speaker 1: of factors that went into it. It was like proximity
- 46:00Speaker 1: human population, proximity to road, proximity to fuel. And they
- 46:05Speaker 1: came out with this thing that it was. You know,
- 46:07Speaker 1: in the um if you go up the Koebuck River
- 46:12Speaker 1: to the head of the Koebuck River and then over
- 46:14Speaker 1: top of the Brooks Range and get to the other side,
- 46:16Speaker 1: I think you wind up in this little area they
- 46:18Speaker 1: call like the remotest place in the continent. But no,
- 46:22Speaker 1: I don't know. He goes by how he goes by
- 46:23Speaker 1: how far it is from a McDonald's. That's that's what
- 46:26Speaker 1: he wanted to say. There's a number of different ways
- 46:28Speaker 1: you can measure this, right, Like, if you want to
- 46:29Speaker 1: do the furthest you can get from a road. Uh
- 46:31Speaker 1: now a segue here that would actually land in Yellowstone
- 46:34Speaker 1: in the other corner of the park. Yeah, yeah, in
- 46:38Speaker 1: the southeast corner where the zone of death is in
- 46:39Speaker 1: the southwest corner. Gotcha. So that's that's one way you
- 46:42Speaker 1: can measure it. Uh, surprisingly like you wind up in
- 46:45Speaker 1: the you'd wind up in the um thoroughfare. M hmm.
- 46:51Speaker 1: What that zone is called other ways as far from
- 46:55Speaker 1: a road, that's the furthest from a road in the
- 46:58Speaker 1: lower forty eight in the southeast corner of Yellowstone. If
- 47:02Speaker 1: you want to look for the least populous county. This
- 47:04Speaker 1: really surprised me and landed in Texas. Love County has
- 47:07Speaker 1: a hundred and thirty four people. That's point one six
- 47:10Speaker 1: seven residents per square mile. No ship, Yeah, that sounds
- 47:13Speaker 1: like Cal's kind of place. Is that the Panhandle of
- 47:16Speaker 1: Texas or in the you know, the stake planes there.
- 47:19Speaker 1: I couldn't tell you, Yana Sticato, Loving County, Texas, Yanni,
- 47:24Speaker 1: if you wanna, if you wanna find it, no kidding. Yeah,
- 47:28Speaker 1: So that's because Alaska doesn't have counties, they have boroughs.
- 47:31Speaker 1: That's a couple of ways you can measure remoteness. But
- 47:34Speaker 1: this this person decided it's the furthest you can get
- 47:36Speaker 1: from McDonald's. And the cool thing about it makes his
- 47:40Speaker 1: job really really easy. The cool thing about measuring remoteness
- 47:43Speaker 1: that way is that it can move around then and
- 47:45Speaker 1: whatever that spot would be is then mc furthest so
- 47:49Speaker 1: in his first version of the map in two thousand nine,
- 47:53Speaker 1: he found that mcfarthest landed in northwestern South Dakota, which
- 47:58Speaker 1: is basically the same when we talked about three toes
- 48:01Speaker 1: of the Wolf or where Hugh Glass got mauled. Right
- 48:04Speaker 1: there on the ground on the right, right there. Yep,
- 48:08Speaker 1: that's where the first inclination of mcfarthest landed. But then
- 48:12Speaker 1: he looked back at the data about a decade later
- 48:14Speaker 1: and realized that there was a McDonald's closure in Nevada
- 48:20Speaker 1: that then moved this. Why were they clothes of McDonald's.
- 48:24Speaker 1: So I touched on this in the barroom banter. I
- 48:26Speaker 1: went to their YELP page, which still existed despite them
- 48:29Speaker 1: being closed for a number of years, and it had like, uh,
- 48:32Speaker 1: let me see he it had fifteen YELP reviews averaging
- 48:35Speaker 1: one point five stars. I'm gonna read you some of
- 48:38Speaker 1: the quotes here from from the reviews. Uh Spencer, Spencer,
- 48:45Speaker 1: thank you, thank you, so, Wendy said, she said, quite
- 48:48Speaker 1: possibly the worst McDonald's on the planet. Paul said, atmosphere
- 48:53Speaker 1: three stars, food, one star, service two stars, but the whole,
- 48:59Speaker 1: the whole brand, and promise that McDonald's is just the same. No,
- 49:03Speaker 1: it's like it's it's the same no matter where you go, Like,
- 49:07Speaker 1: how do you mess it up? Like we we give
- 49:09Speaker 1: you the giant bag of fries, do you take the
- 49:12Speaker 1: fries and put it in our proprietary oil blend, in
- 49:15Speaker 1: our proprietary friar. This it's meant to rule out, it's
- 49:21Speaker 1: meant to like rule out human error. This seems as
- 49:23Speaker 1: I was like a culture thing, like it just didn't
- 49:25Speaker 1: didn't work there. So Jason in his review said, my
- 49:28Speaker 1: worst McDonald's experience ever. And then what's interesting about the
- 49:34Speaker 1: reviews is they're coming from people who like McDonald's. They're
- 49:39Speaker 1: coming from mcmcdonald's fans. They know the baseline of McDonald's.
- 49:43Speaker 1: These aren't people like I had never heard of this place,
- 49:45Speaker 1: but my god, these are play people who are like
- 49:48Speaker 1: let down, let down by the McDonald's experience at that
- 49:52Speaker 1: particular McDonald's go on. My favorite review, though, came from Allison,
- 49:56Speaker 1: was one of the last reviews left of this McDonald's.
- 50:00Speaker 1: She said the cashier Cody was more stoned than a boulder.
- 50:04Speaker 1: He had hickeys all over his neck. Well done, Cody's girlfriend.
- 50:09Speaker 1: So that was one of the final interviews and likely
- 50:12Speaker 1: why this McDonald's got shut down so mcfarthest because this
- 50:17Speaker 1: McDonald's clothes moved eleven hundred miles southwest from northwestern South
- 50:22Speaker 1: Dakota to halfway between Las Vegas and Reno. And at
- 50:26Speaker 1: this new locale you can now get thirteen miles further
- 50:31Speaker 1: from a big mac. What's that exact locale look like?
- 50:35Speaker 1: The exact locale it is on now on BLM Land
- 50:38Speaker 1: and it's actually right on the edge of Area fifty one,
- 50:42Speaker 1: so you can you can go reach this place if
- 50:44Speaker 1: you wanted. Uh. So it was like a wild horse
- 50:46Speaker 1: and a martian that's right standing there right now. This
- 50:51Speaker 1: is what the person wrote in eighteen when they updated
- 50:54Speaker 1: the make farthest location, they said, at its center, by
- 50:56Speaker 1: my calculations, forty minutes of washboards south on the Extraterrestrial Highway,
- 51:01Speaker 1: and a few clicks to the civilian side of the
- 51:04Speaker 1: greater Area fifty one perimeter fence, you'll find lower forty
- 51:07Speaker 1: eight's current mcfarthest spot, a sandy swatch of silver gate
- 51:12Speaker 1: sage brush just over one hundred twenty miles. As the
- 51:15Speaker 1: crow flies from the nearest McDonald's how's the business one?
- 51:21Speaker 1: It was actually pretty surprising. You would think that you
- 51:23Speaker 1: can get further than a hundred and twenty miles from McDonald's.
- 51:27Speaker 1: That's it. Do you remember now? I don't know, because
- 51:29Speaker 1: the reach of McDonald's really struck me when we were
- 51:32Speaker 1: UM one of the Remember, I think Obama took steps
- 51:37Speaker 1: to normalize, you know, normalized relations with Cuba, UM, which
- 51:43Speaker 1: I think will eventually happen because I think people are
- 51:45Speaker 1: most people in America have forgot, they've forgotten why we're
- 51:48Speaker 1: real mad at Cuba. But anyways, they were gonna like
- 51:51Speaker 1: the hatred, the hatred Waynes. But I remember hearing and
- 51:56Speaker 1: that's not a big island. I remember reading this article
- 52:00Speaker 1: was talking about Western you know, or like American corporate
- 52:04Speaker 1: world's plans for normalized relations with Cube, and I remember
- 52:08Speaker 1: reading that McDonald's was planning on going into Cuba lightly
- 52:12Speaker 1: with twenty four stores or like some plan and I
- 52:15Speaker 1: was like, that's light. So then I thought there must
- 52:19Speaker 1: be just a lot of McDonald's is around. Man, if
- 52:21Speaker 1: you want to go visit mcfarthest I put it's uh,
- 52:24Speaker 1: I put a pin for it in the article on
- 52:27Speaker 1: our website's bar room banter Colin mcfarthest the furthest you
- 52:31Speaker 1: can get from McDonald's. The closest town the McDonald's that close.
- 52:35Speaker 1: It's Tona, paw, Nevada. So if you do go there,
- 52:38Speaker 1: you're you're still in good shape because there is a
- 52:40Speaker 1: burger king and a subway in that town. Oh, they
- 52:44Speaker 1: have a two they have a two s. It's a
- 52:48Speaker 1: little cute. See it's a little cute. See. I think
- 52:51Speaker 1: he needs to find another way to figure out the
- 52:52Speaker 1: remotest spot. I like this one. I really like this one. Um,
- 52:58Speaker 1: it's a little far. It's a little outside of our wheelhouse.
- 53:02Speaker 1: Uh here at me eater. But I think that a
- 53:04Speaker 1: good fact checker spencer, when you finish up the squirrels,
- 53:08Speaker 1: how they bite, how they do bite the balls off
- 53:10Speaker 1: squirrels would be would be are there really twenty four
- 53:18Speaker 1: ingredients or whatever the hell it is in McDonald's French fries.
- 53:23Speaker 1: I didn't Well, I don't know if i've heard that claim.
- 53:25Speaker 1: Is that like some old marketing that I wouldn't be familiar.
- 53:28Speaker 1: I don't think it's the thing that they're proud of.
- 53:30Speaker 1: It's damn sure. Not a potato and some salt and
- 53:32Speaker 1: oil it's they make a slurry. They make a slurry
- 53:38Speaker 1: and then form that slurry back into the shape of
- 53:42Speaker 1: a French fry that gets frozen and fried nineteen ingredients.
- 53:49Speaker 1: Is that true? That would be a good one for you.
- 53:51Speaker 1: And I Loving County was in the Panhandle. The Yana
- 53:55Speaker 1: westicado stick planes for you people that don't speak that
- 54:00Speaker 1: whatever language, asticago is Okay, one more for you, Spencer,
- 54:04Speaker 1: one more, one more thing I'd like you to explain. Okay,
- 54:07Speaker 1: the most instagram places outdoor places in America. This is
- 54:15Speaker 1: another article that I wrote as part of our Barroom
- 54:17Speaker 1: Banter series. And uh, this this isn't something that's like
- 54:22Speaker 1: new coverage. Um, the USA Today has looked at a
- 54:28Speaker 1: similar thing before. Other websites have looked at this. They've
- 54:32Speaker 1: always looked at like the most Instagram places in the world,
- 54:35Speaker 1: the most Instagram places in the United States, things like that.
- 54:38Speaker 1: But nobody he has looked at the most Instagrammed outdoor
- 54:41Speaker 1: places in each state. So that's that's why this list
- 54:46Speaker 1: was unique. And I gathered this by looking at what
- 54:49Speaker 1: The USA Today had already done some other websites, and
- 54:51Speaker 1: then also using data available from Instagram with hashtags and
- 54:56Speaker 1: tags and things like that, and looked at the most
- 54:59Speaker 1: instagram in places in every single state. And here's another segue.
- 55:03Speaker 1: Wyoming's was, of course Yellastone National Park. So it all connects.
- 55:09Speaker 1: Did did you guys look at this list at all
- 55:11Speaker 1: of the most instagram places we're waiting to talk about.
- 55:13Speaker 1: I'm looking at it right now. Okay, okay, is there
- 55:15Speaker 1: anything that stands out to you? Like, what do you
- 55:17Speaker 1: think of Michigan's Michigan's is Silver Lake sand Dune State Park. No,
- 55:23Speaker 1: that doesn't check out. No, that that doesn't surprise me,
- 55:26Speaker 1: It doesn't shock me. Yeah. So from the fifty that
- 55:28Speaker 1: I gathered here, there were fifteen state parks, ten national parks,
- 55:32Speaker 1: eight beaches, six lakes, three city parks, three national forests
- 55:36Speaker 1: or monuments, and then five miscellaneous locations. And the miscellaneous ones,
- 55:43Speaker 1: uh were examples like I think Hawaii had a volcano. Um,
- 55:49Speaker 1: what was another one somebody had? Uh? There was just
- 55:54Speaker 1: some some oddballs like that. But my favorite miscellaneous ones
- 55:58Speaker 1: were in Nebraska and Iowa and as the South Dakota,
- 56:00Speaker 1: and I'd like to rag on those states any chance
- 56:02Speaker 1: I get. In this list made it real, real easy
- 56:06Speaker 1: because Nebraska's most instagrammed outdoor place is Volos pumpkin Patch,
- 56:12Speaker 1: which I thought was really great, really, I really enjoyed.
- 56:14Speaker 1: Why is that, I wonder? I don't know, especially when
- 56:17Speaker 1: you look at the states next door right, like like
- 56:19Speaker 1: south Dakotas is Badlands National Park, which is an incredible area. Uh,
- 56:23Speaker 1: and then you just get a little bit south and
- 56:25Speaker 1: you have Valist pumpkin Patch in Nebraska. I was, well,
- 56:30Speaker 1: pumpkin patch might be one hell of a place. Maybe.
- 56:33Speaker 1: I'm I'm so intrigued by finding that out. I want
- 56:36Speaker 1: to go next time I'm i'm driving through car is
- 56:38Speaker 1: the bridges of Madison County. Yeah, and there's a picture
- 56:41Speaker 1: of these in the article. Did you look at the picture?
- 56:44Speaker 1: It's it's six of these rural bridges that are apparently
- 56:49Speaker 1: very popular to go take pictures in front of and
- 56:52Speaker 1: tag it's certainly like probably the most unique place. Well,
- 56:56Speaker 1: you know, there's that old love movie the Bridges of
- 56:58Speaker 1: Madison County. I did come across at looking the sun.
- 57:01Speaker 1: I don't know if that's that's why, or if this
- 57:04Speaker 1: is just like that's that's totally why. It's because of
- 57:07Speaker 1: the Old Love movie The Bridges of Madison. How old
- 57:09Speaker 1: is it though, and is it would it like from
- 57:11Speaker 1: my lifetime? Yeah, it does seem something appreciate that. I
- 57:17Speaker 1: think this is like Sorority Girls in nearby cologies that like,
- 57:22Speaker 1: I think it's a cool place. I don't think some
- 57:25Speaker 1: old movie. It's a good point because the people that
- 57:28Speaker 1: love that movie probably aren't instagramming too much. Now, White
- 57:33Speaker 1: Sands National Monument in New Mexico surprises me a little
- 57:36Speaker 1: bit because there's so little it's a hard place to
- 57:41Speaker 1: get to and there's so little traffic going through there.
- 57:45Speaker 1: It's stunning. You can see it on like you know,
- 57:49Speaker 1: you can see it from outer space, you can see
- 57:51Speaker 1: it from real high satellite imagery like this like weird
- 57:55Speaker 1: ass patch of white in the state. But it surprises
- 57:59Speaker 1: me that people that that it's that it's difficulty to
- 58:03Speaker 1: get to didn't change that didn't make it a lower score.
- 58:07Speaker 1: That's probably one of like there's not very many examples
- 58:10Speaker 1: on this list where like we would actually want to
- 58:13Speaker 1: go to and hang out. These are like very popular
- 58:17Speaker 1: areas obviously, as as you can see on the list
- 58:20Speaker 1: the lakes. The Lakes were like a cool example though,
- 58:22Speaker 1: because pretty much every lake on this list has like
- 58:25Speaker 1: really quality fishing like Martin and Alabama, like Norman in
- 58:29Speaker 1: North Carolina Lake they Ozarks and Missouri, like Mini Tanka
- 58:31Speaker 1: in Minnesota, Kentucky Lake in Kentucky. Those are all like
- 58:34Speaker 1: regular spots for bass fishing tournaments. They all have like
- 58:38Speaker 1: some of them have good whalleye fishing. So like, as
- 58:41Speaker 1: far as places we would actually want to visit, I
- 58:43Speaker 1: think the lakes are are a few of the a
- 58:45Speaker 1: few of the examples on this list. Did uh when
- 58:48Speaker 1: you pull this list together, did you feel, um, proud
- 58:53Speaker 1: of your fellow man or did you feel disappointed by
- 58:56Speaker 1: your fellow man in his predictability? Mm hmm, that's a
- 59:00Speaker 1: good question. Um. Part of the list though, is like
- 59:06Speaker 1: also manipulated by me, Like I could have left out
- 59:09Speaker 1: beaches in city parks if I wanted, but there was
- 59:12Speaker 1: just like an overwhelming like what you would count as
- 59:14Speaker 1: an outdoor place. There's just like an overwhelming amount of
- 59:17Speaker 1: states where those were like head and shoulders above something
- 59:22Speaker 1: like a state park or a national park or something
- 59:25Speaker 1: like that. So when you see all the city parks
- 59:27Speaker 1: on the list and the beaches, it's a little bit
- 59:29Speaker 1: disappointing that like that those are you know, some of
- 59:32Speaker 1: the most popular Instagram places, meaning like for New York
- 59:37Speaker 1: to be Central Park, is the Central Park count as
- 59:39Speaker 1: an outdoor place? Right? I think that the people who
- 59:41Speaker 1: go to Central Park, they would argue that it very
- 59:44Speaker 1: much does. That's what I'm saying for for some people,
- 59:46Speaker 1: like the beach or a city park is the outdoor
- 59:50Speaker 1: So I felt like that's why those were worth including.
- 59:54Speaker 1: If you want to see the full list all fifty
- 59:55Speaker 1: of these again, this is on our website. Barroom Banter
- 59:59Speaker 1: the most instant grammed outdoor places in each state. Thank
- 1:00:04Speaker 1: you very much. I really like the uh the graphics
- 1:00:07Speaker 1: that someone did for barroom Banter. That's a whole big
- 1:00:10Speaker 1: conspiracy that what's the conspiracy that it's based off that
- 1:00:14Speaker 1: bar in Miles City. He told me that we used
- 1:00:18Speaker 1: to spend a great deal of time and that is
- 1:00:21Speaker 1: who did it. The Montana Bar. It's just called the
- 1:00:24Speaker 1: Montana Bar. It's down the rope from the Bison Bar.
- 1:00:28Speaker 1: I used to practically live there. In the window, they
- 1:00:30Speaker 1: have an audubon. They have a full sized amount of
- 1:00:34Speaker 1: what's regarded as a as an extinct big horn sheep species,
- 1:00:38Speaker 1: the autumn the audubon sheep, which now they also got
- 1:00:41Speaker 1: a lot of stuffed heads of trail steers that used
- 1:00:46Speaker 1: to do that. They used to run on the trail
- 1:00:48Speaker 1: runs from the Texas up to Montana. For the double winter.
- 1:00:52Speaker 1: They got some leads steers in there. There's a bullet
- 1:00:55Speaker 1: hole in there still from when someone there was some
- 1:01:00Speaker 1: kind of shooting in there there. That's the thing you
- 1:01:03Speaker 1: could do too, is famous bullet holes and bars, because
- 1:01:06Speaker 1: you know, here's the deal is frequent in many of them.
- 1:01:11Speaker 1: The Slippery Noodle, Independianapolis. There's a bullet hole in Lake
- 1:01:16Speaker 1: Independence or Independence Lake by Marquette in Michigan. You know
- 1:01:20Speaker 1: the um You know Robert Travor, the writer, and he
- 1:01:25Speaker 1: wrote Anatomy of a Murder. You know the story Anatomy
- 1:01:29Speaker 1: of a murder. The Anatomy of a Murder is based
- 1:01:31Speaker 1: off an actual murder. It's like and Jimmy Stewart. They
- 1:01:34Speaker 1: did a film and Jimmy Stewart played the prosecutor in
- 1:01:40Speaker 1: Anatomy of Murder. And it was written by a novelist
- 1:01:44Speaker 1: who he was an avid fisherman and wrote a lot
- 1:01:46Speaker 1: about fishing, but he actually not He wrote a novelization
- 1:01:50Speaker 1: of something that actually happened to him in his life.
- 1:01:53Speaker 1: And there was a guy and a woman living at
- 1:01:56Speaker 1: a campground, and the guy was stationed there to work,
- 1:01:59Speaker 1: like on a some kind of military installation, and his
- 1:02:02Speaker 1: wife and he's off working. Very jealous husband. He's off working,
- 1:02:09Speaker 1: and supposedly he gets concerned that his wife is running
- 1:02:12Speaker 1: around with some other dude who's living at the campground.
- 1:02:16Speaker 1: On the night of the murder, she like sees a
- 1:02:19Speaker 1: bear in the campground, gets a little scared by the bear.
- 1:02:21Speaker 1: I could be getting certain parts that's wrong. But I've
- 1:02:23Speaker 1: been to all these places. I slept in the campground,
- 1:02:25Speaker 1: went to the bar. He She gets nervous about a
- 1:02:28Speaker 1: black bear hanging around the campground, and that's why she
- 1:02:31Speaker 1: explains she had to head down to the bar. That's
- 1:02:34Speaker 1: her story, the bears in the campground. Therefore I went
- 1:02:38Speaker 1: to the bar. Other folks believe that she was down
- 1:02:42Speaker 1: in the bar because she had taken to She had
- 1:02:48Speaker 1: established in a morris is that is that the right word?
- 1:02:51Speaker 1: Amorous and amorous relationship with some local heavy. The irritated
- 1:02:58Speaker 1: husband goes down there, he kills the guy and the
- 1:03:05Speaker 1: bullet hole. Supposed he's still in the bar when I
- 1:03:08Speaker 1: went in there. And I said, I want to see
- 1:03:09Speaker 1: the bull hole. The guys said, well, the problem is,
- 1:03:14Speaker 1: you know this is the whole everybody says is the
- 1:03:17Speaker 1: bull hole behind the bar, But back then the bar
- 1:03:21Speaker 1: was around that wall. So he's like, I don't know.
- 1:03:25Speaker 1: He goes, you know, you're the first guy to come
- 1:03:26Speaker 1: in here and asked him about the bullet hole in
- 1:03:28Speaker 1: the bar. But yeah, the great movie Anatomy of a Murder.
- 1:03:30Speaker 1: Jimmy stewart'son. He's always fishing. Brook shot wrapping him up
- 1:03:33Speaker 1: in newspaper. Have you never seen this? Never seen it?
- 1:03:35Speaker 1: I'm in there, I'm in you haven't seen bridges in
- 1:03:38Speaker 1: Mason County. I don't think this has Robert Travor, He's
- 1:03:42Speaker 1: written some of the most beautiful stuff about fishing. Why
- 1:03:47Speaker 1: are you looking at me like that? I'm okay, that's
- 1:03:53Speaker 1: his pen name. What's his real damn name? Well, I'm
- 1:03:55Speaker 1: somebody pull this up. People need to know about this.
- 1:03:57Speaker 1: I'm gonna answer Yanni's question about the epic for barber Manage.
- 1:04:01Speaker 1: He was made by Hunter Spencer, who is a listener,
- 1:04:04Speaker 1: a reader, a watcher of meat eater uh and he
- 1:04:07Speaker 1: is awesome at what he does. Can I interrupt. Good
- 1:04:09Speaker 1: job Hunter. His name was John D. Volker. His pen
- 1:04:14Speaker 1: name was Robert Traver. Go on, I'm proud of the
- 1:04:17Speaker 1: bartender for actually telling you what's what instead of just
- 1:04:21Speaker 1: being like, oh, yeah, here's the bullet hole, getting y'all
- 1:04:25Speaker 1: happy about it, waiting for that five dollar tip. That
- 1:04:28Speaker 1: would you wanna hear someone? One of Robert travers famous
- 1:04:33Speaker 1: quotes about fishing, he says, I fished because I love to,
- 1:04:38Speaker 1: because I love the environs where trout are found, which
- 1:04:41Speaker 1: are invariably beautiful, and hate the environs where crowds of
- 1:04:45Speaker 1: people are found, which are invariably ugly. That I got, yea,
- 1:04:54Speaker 1: So tell you what you're telling him. I already told him.
- 1:04:57Speaker 1: What's the scandal about the sign? Well, it's just the
- 1:05:00Speaker 1: way that Spencer told me. He's like, I found this
- 1:05:01Speaker 1: guy and he's really good at at design and art,
- 1:05:04Speaker 1: and his name is Hunter Spencer. And I just thought,
- 1:05:08Speaker 1: I thought, really, his name's Hunter Spencer, right, I wouldn't
- 1:05:12Speaker 1: buy that we should, yeah, we should pay him to
- 1:05:14Speaker 1: do this art for my stuff. I was like, oh yeah,
- 1:05:18Speaker 1: it turns out it turns out I was wrong. You
- 1:05:20Speaker 1: did get ahold of guy? Well, like we did for
- 1:05:24Speaker 1: a while. We we had we identified one of our
- 1:05:26Speaker 1: internet trolls. We started to think it was the flip
- 1:05:29Speaker 1: flop pleasure because the internet troll would know things. I'm like,
- 1:05:33Speaker 1: how do you know that? And then I was like,
- 1:05:35Speaker 1: Seth knows that? And everything started tod started to add
- 1:05:40Speaker 1: up for like everything that he would say. We'd be like,
- 1:05:43Speaker 1: guess what we're announcing next week and he'd be like,
- 1:05:45Speaker 1: it's up, you know, And I'm like a son of
- 1:05:47Speaker 1: a bit, I'm like, who would possibly know this? Like
- 1:05:50Speaker 1: Seth would know that because he was in the car
- 1:05:52Speaker 1: one day when I was talking about it. He's got
- 1:05:54Speaker 1: a mustach him. Oh yeah, he did. He'd get real hot. Yeah,
- 1:05:59Speaker 1: just get real hot when we bring it up, like
- 1:06:02Speaker 1: the like the kind of hot that only made me more.
- 1:06:05Speaker 1: Have you disproved it? Because we were able to disprove.
- 1:06:08Speaker 1: Hunter Spencer is a real guy, big fan of Mediator.
- 1:06:10Speaker 1: Shout out to him, wonderful job. Yeah, like, uh, Hunter Spencer,
- 1:06:16Speaker 1: would you just hand the check to me and I'll
- 1:06:20Speaker 1: get it to him. There's a chance that it's a
- 1:06:22Speaker 1: long con and Spencer has created Instagram account and been
- 1:06:26Speaker 1: doing it for years. He probably bought some of Cow's paperwork.
- 1:06:32Speaker 1: Here's a so much scarity. Not that's right. I wish
- 1:06:35Speaker 1: I was that talented he does. He does an awesome job,
- 1:06:37Speaker 1: and you're gonna be seeing more of his stealth on
- 1:06:38Speaker 1: our website. So he's come up with some good ship
- 1:06:40Speaker 1: Man and Barroom Banter is also powered by Element. Powered
- 1:06:45Speaker 1: by Element, we have a new title sponsor series, I'm
- 1:06:49Speaker 1: Drinking It Too. Yeah, just like just like on X
- 1:06:52Speaker 1: is a title sponsor this year, Podcast Element is a
- 1:06:55Speaker 1: title sponsor. A barbroom Manter. They make it all possible, Steve,
- 1:06:59Speaker 1: I know you like their stuff. Ben really likes their stuff.
- 1:07:01Speaker 1: Maybe too much. Yeah, snort it right off the table.
- 1:07:05Speaker 1: Keep keeps. You will hydrate. It's what I'm telling you, Ben, Ben,
- 1:07:10Speaker 1: you're in the now that you're well hydrated. You're in
- 1:07:12Speaker 1: the hot seat. Now give us walk us through the
- 1:07:15Speaker 1: Brent but the Brent Bone Bearitax story. Now, that's what
- 1:07:21Speaker 1: you get from reading stuff and not here, not not knowing. Yeah,
- 1:07:24Speaker 1: we've had a few guys on our team that have
- 1:07:26Speaker 1: helped me work on this same longer help me work
- 1:07:27Speaker 1: on this. And he was calling him Brett Bone for
- 1:07:30Speaker 1: about six months, where I corrected it, but Bond, Brett
- 1:07:33Speaker 1: Bond insane story this. Yeah, I'm not. I'm you know,
- 1:07:38Speaker 1: I'm impressed with you have a computer in front of
- 1:07:40Speaker 1: you there, Spencer. I don't want to go too far
- 1:07:42Speaker 1: behind the scenes. I don't, so I'm just gonna recall
- 1:07:45Speaker 1: this from memory, so it may not sound quite as
- 1:07:47Speaker 1: slick Spencer's stories. But do you want to borrow his computer? No? No,
- 1:07:52Speaker 1: I think I can get it. You guys have all
- 1:07:54Speaker 1: seen what we'll just call it's hard to describe, although
- 1:07:58Speaker 1: we try to describe it in in the podcast. And
- 1:08:01Speaker 1: then everybody's seen the picture. Everybody's seen the It's like
- 1:08:05Speaker 1: the Kennedy assassination. Everybody knows they were when they saw
- 1:08:08Speaker 1: the picture. I can tell you where I was. Matt
- 1:08:10Speaker 1: Cook sent to me and I said, bullshit. Yes, that's
- 1:08:14Speaker 1: the best part about this that every I when I
- 1:08:17Speaker 1: first saw it. Miles Nolte, I'm sure all you guys,
- 1:08:19Speaker 1: all the guys on our crew saw this photo because
- 1:08:21Speaker 1: I walked around showing it to people as I'm sure
- 1:08:23Speaker 1: you invariably do to get their reaction. Most people's reaction
- 1:08:26Speaker 1: when they see the photo it's not a breat Bond,
- 1:08:28Speaker 1: It's of his father, Glen Bond his he was attacked
- 1:08:32Speaker 1: by a bear on not the Highway in Alaska. The
- 1:08:36Speaker 1: bear ripped through with its jaws, and its claws ripped
- 1:08:41Speaker 1: through the kind of took a chunk out of the
- 1:08:45Speaker 1: center of his face. You know i'd put it, how
- 1:08:47Speaker 1: would you put it? Yeah? I thought about it a
- 1:08:49Speaker 1: great deal. Imagine that you're imagine that you're I don't see.
- 1:08:55Speaker 1: I don't want to do this in any way that
- 1:08:56Speaker 1: would to be disrespectful. It be like opening up a
- 1:09:01Speaker 1: person's face like a pair of butt cheeks. Yeah, I'll leave,
- 1:09:07Speaker 1: thanks that you ain't coming on that stripped away, I
- 1:09:10Speaker 1: mean stripped away. But it's not anything like that. Tomorrow
- 1:09:14Speaker 1: I think about it. Yeah, sorry, let'st It's not too
- 1:09:22Speaker 1: hard to describe. It's I mean, it's like basic anatomy.
- 1:09:28Speaker 1: And I think there's been enough sort of like gore
- 1:09:31Speaker 1: in media like done that's so that's similar. It's like
- 1:09:36Speaker 1: someone's face has been taken off and it's sort of
- 1:09:40Speaker 1: like you can still tell that there's life. It's it's
- 1:09:44Speaker 1: almost like a skull with still muscle attached to it,
- 1:09:47Speaker 1: and there's eyeballs that you can tell have life in them.
- 1:09:51Speaker 1: And there our teeth there that you can still tell
- 1:09:53Speaker 1: our attached to jaws that work, but there is no skin,
- 1:09:57Speaker 1: and it's like it's like a more of like a
- 1:09:59Speaker 1: skull with flesh on it as opposed to like a
- 1:10:02Speaker 1: human face with skin. Dab, please, I just I only
- 1:10:07Speaker 1: want to take a dab because the opening up the
- 1:10:09Speaker 1: butt cheeks. One, dude, that's not right. It's not even
- 1:10:13Speaker 1: I don't know where it came from. I was trying
- 1:10:15Speaker 1: to support this is my next dab. Okay, it would
- 1:10:17Speaker 1: be like if you took your skin a knife and
- 1:10:19Speaker 1: made an opening cut up the center of someone's face.
- 1:10:22Speaker 1: So you start below their chin and make your opening
- 1:10:24Speaker 1: incision like you're gutting a deer up and then skin
- 1:10:28Speaker 1: down each side a little ways. How's that big? Ways? Yeah?
- 1:10:33Speaker 1: Skin down a ways. I think if you combine Jannie's
- 1:10:36Speaker 1: and yours and remove the butt cheeks, you got what
- 1:10:41Speaker 1: it is. And I think that there's a couple of things.
- 1:10:43Speaker 1: And I said no, I said, that's like, I don't
- 1:10:45Speaker 1: know what that is, but that's that's like a fake thing.
- 1:10:47Speaker 1: I think there's a few. You gotta kind of start
- 1:10:49Speaker 1: with the emotionality of seeing the photos now, there's videos
- 1:10:52Speaker 1: as well. Brett tells me there's a minute plus video
- 1:10:56Speaker 1: that because this is where this all began, there's a
- 1:10:58Speaker 1: minute plus video of his dad talking. And if you've
- 1:11:02Speaker 1: seen the photo, you've invariably seen the clip that Brett
- 1:11:05Speaker 1: Sheridan his Instagram of his dad talking, shards of flesh
- 1:11:09Speaker 1: hanging down over what would be his lips. Can you
- 1:11:12Speaker 1: back up to what exactly the pre attack or are
- 1:11:15Speaker 1: you gonna get there the people if you need to
- 1:11:18Speaker 1: dress like where this because you said on the highway
- 1:11:20Speaker 1: and I think that that might lead people. Yeah, yeah,
- 1:11:23Speaker 1: this it's so. I think he where this all starts
- 1:11:26Speaker 1: is the imagery, because this is the thing that that
- 1:11:29Speaker 1: brought me to this, that brought most people to this,
- 1:11:31Speaker 1: It certainly brought me to it. It was a strategical mission. Yes,
- 1:11:36Speaker 1: and we'll get there, and we've we've that's show. I
- 1:11:40Speaker 1: want to show Steve how wrong he was. Show he's
- 1:11:42Speaker 1: showing me how little it resembles anything to do with
- 1:11:46Speaker 1: If your butt cheeks look like that, you've got a
- 1:11:47Speaker 1: bigger problem than listen to this podcast. I think it
- 1:11:49Speaker 1: looks like if you when you like have a rifle
- 1:11:52Speaker 1: and you shoulder shoot a deer and then you skin
- 1:11:55Speaker 1: away the hide like what you have left there. It's
- 1:11:58Speaker 1: just like that kind of carnage. Good. So the video
- 1:12:01Speaker 1: that that Brett Bond, So we'll just start here Brett Bond.
- 1:12:05Speaker 1: Earlier this year March mid March, Brett Bond shares a
- 1:12:11Speaker 1: series of images and videos on his Instagram's at BBB Alaskin.
- 1:12:15Speaker 1: You go there and look, and at this time guy's
- 1:12:18Speaker 1: got a couple hundred followers, eight nine followers. He shares
- 1:12:23Speaker 1: this video and this photo, and there's another, there's there's
- 1:12:26Speaker 1: a series of I believe seven images. One of the
- 1:12:29Speaker 1: images is his dad sitting on a snow machine with
- 1:12:33Speaker 1: this big eight ft grizzly bear laying in front of him.
- 1:12:38Speaker 1: Kind of dead, real dead. The next that's the leading photo.
- 1:12:43Speaker 1: But then you you scroll past that, you get to
- 1:12:46Speaker 1: see the photo of his dad without a face. Scroll
- 1:12:49Speaker 1: even further you get to see his dad talking, speaking
- 1:12:55Speaker 1: rather normally muffled because of the shards of flesh that
- 1:12:57Speaker 1: are hanging down over what would be his lips, which
- 1:13:00Speaker 1: are peeled away, the shards of flesh that are hanging
- 1:13:03Speaker 1: from what would have been his nose which just peeled away.
- 1:13:06Speaker 1: One of his eyes. I mean it's gone. His face
- 1:13:10Speaker 1: just isn't attached to his skull anymore. A curtain. Yeah,
- 1:13:14Speaker 1: it's just it looks it's it's the most surgical. It
- 1:13:20Speaker 1: almost looks surgical. As you said, you could take your
- 1:13:22Speaker 1: skin and knife, slide down the middle and peeled that
- 1:13:24Speaker 1: thing away. Has this like weird violence to it, but
- 1:13:27Speaker 1: also it looks surgical. And this is important for later
- 1:13:30Speaker 1: on because how he recovered is it's important that we
- 1:13:34Speaker 1: know that this was not this bear didn't really harm
- 1:13:40Speaker 1: any of the bones in his face and cartilage. It's
- 1:13:42Speaker 1: just kind of skin and flesh peeled away. So now
- 1:13:45Speaker 1: it looks like a horror movie where he's through the
- 1:13:48Speaker 1: shards of flesh and blood. You can see his teeth moving,
- 1:13:51Speaker 1: you can almost see the bone above his teeth, his
- 1:13:55Speaker 1: gums are kind of peeled away. And he's explaining that
- 1:13:59Speaker 1: this bear came. He said, it came fast, came at
- 1:14:02Speaker 1: me fast. There's other clips I've seen where he's he's
- 1:14:04Speaker 1: explaining where the bear was. And so this is the
- 1:14:07Speaker 1: first time officially anyone has ever seen this officially ever
- 1:14:12Speaker 1: seen this shared by the person who actually is revealed
- 1:14:15Speaker 1: by this dude's kid so this is earlier this year.
- 1:14:20Speaker 1: I got sent this to me. I'm sure everyone here
- 1:14:22Speaker 1: did a hundred times. I fund the d M s
- 1:14:27Speaker 1: M and I think it's important to note that it's
- 1:14:30Speaker 1: the first emotion is bullshit, No way not true, because
- 1:14:34Speaker 1: you know, I still haven't called my buddy Matt Coach
- 1:14:36Speaker 1: to tell him that I'm you know, he because he
- 1:14:39Speaker 1: was coming to me for like, could this be the
- 1:14:42Speaker 1: expert insights, which I was like, yeah, said, that's what
- 1:14:47Speaker 1: makes us think. So there's that there's so many elements
- 1:14:50Speaker 1: to this, but it's one of the things that makes
- 1:14:51Speaker 1: it so amazing. So one of the other photos in
- 1:14:57Speaker 1: in this seven photo run on Instagram is a photo
- 1:15:00Speaker 1: taken in a place in was Cilic called diamond D
- 1:15:03Speaker 1: Custom Leather, and it's the owner of Diamond D, Glenn
- 1:15:07Speaker 1: and Brett and it is roughly I think, nine days
- 1:15:10Speaker 1: after the attack. And if you look at it, okay,
- 1:15:15Speaker 1: Glenn Bond, seventy seven year old father of Brett Bonn,
- 1:15:19Speaker 1: looks like he got attacked years ago. When you see
- 1:15:24Speaker 1: the nine days after, his face looks like it's completely
- 1:15:27Speaker 1: gone and there's no way that it could be reconstructed
- 1:15:29Speaker 1: or that he could survive. Nine days later, he's looking
- 1:15:33Speaker 1: pretty good. What nine days later he's shopping. He's shopping,
- 1:15:38Speaker 1: He's going, he's visiting a leather store. He's going, that's
- 1:15:41Speaker 1: where I wind up having a that that's where I
- 1:15:44Speaker 1: and I didn't even know this, but that still is
- 1:15:47Speaker 1: puzzling to me. There's there's there is a cascade of
- 1:15:50Speaker 1: puzzling events that you each time you're like, no way.
- 1:15:53Speaker 1: And I've talked to and other people on our team.
- 1:15:55Speaker 1: I have talked to Joe Fernado and say, I'm longer
- 1:15:58Speaker 1: than the plastic surf. They had three surgeons. We've talked
- 1:16:01Speaker 1: all three of them. Yep. We've talked to the rescue
- 1:16:05Speaker 1: pilot who rescued him, and we'll get to that. We've
- 1:16:09Speaker 1: talked to other hunting guides that were on the scene.
- 1:16:11Speaker 1: We talked to a retired sheriff from Wyoming who was
- 1:16:14Speaker 1: on the scene when they arrived back at the lodge.
- 1:16:17Speaker 1: We've talked to Brett Glenn, their mother, Lorraine. I mean,
- 1:16:20Speaker 1: so we've covered anything that you think might not be true,
- 1:16:23Speaker 1: because a lot of this will sound like it's not true.
- 1:16:25Speaker 1: We've covered off on it, and there's and there's people
- 1:16:27Speaker 1: involved that are credible, have no reason to lie, and
- 1:16:31Speaker 1: can confirm basically every insane detail of this. And we
- 1:16:35Speaker 1: had to do it because yeah, you like quadrup Will
- 1:16:37Speaker 1: checked it because you had to because every time you
- 1:16:39Speaker 1: hear it, you know there's no way it's impossible. So anyway,
- 1:16:42Speaker 1: that's what's that funny, Like a funny thing as a
- 1:16:44Speaker 1: journalist too, be that someone tells you something and then
- 1:16:49Speaker 1: you have to be you have to say, um, you know,
- 1:16:51Speaker 1: with all due respect, I'm gonna call some people to
- 1:16:56Speaker 1: make sure you're telling me the truth. It's awkward. Yeah,
- 1:16:59Speaker 1: well there's an elm. Are you gonna be like? Is
- 1:17:00Speaker 1: there someone to can corroborate this? It's kindly, well, what
- 1:17:03Speaker 1: are you saying? Well, that brings up an important element
- 1:17:05Speaker 1: of this story, of the many things we got to
- 1:17:07Speaker 1: go through to get through it. This. So the photos
- 1:17:11Speaker 1: weren't taken this year, they weren't taken last year. They
- 1:17:13Speaker 1: weren't taken a year before the photos were taken. In
- 1:17:16Speaker 1: four years, he said on him for four years. Four
- 1:17:18Speaker 1: years he sat on him, as he describes, and you'll
- 1:17:22Speaker 1: you'll learn even more about this. This is informed by
- 1:17:24Speaker 1: another thing that happened to Bretton he sat him because
- 1:17:27Speaker 1: they're a private family. They did not want any fame
- 1:17:30Speaker 1: from this. And you guys will know we cover bar
- 1:17:31Speaker 1: tax all the time. Bar tax are a chance to
- 1:17:33Speaker 1: get seen, to tell your story. People want to know,
- 1:17:36Speaker 1: especially something is insane as the photos and videos that
- 1:17:39Speaker 1: Brett Bond had on his phone. So for four years,
- 1:17:42Speaker 1: these things were sequestered basically on his phone. He may
- 1:17:47Speaker 1: have texted him to a few people, he may have
- 1:17:49Speaker 1: shown them the few people, but to his admission, that's
- 1:17:53Speaker 1: where they stayed. Unfortunately, at the Diamond Custom Leather, which
- 1:17:59Speaker 1: was is let's say, four years before where they took
- 1:18:03Speaker 1: that photo. Nine days after the attack, Brett's mom, Lorraine Phillips,
- 1:18:07Speaker 1: who's there with them at the shop, asks if Brett
- 1:18:11Speaker 1: doesn't mind sending some of these images to some of
- 1:18:13Speaker 1: the family members that are there for custom of the
- 1:18:16Speaker 1: owner of Custom d Leather he makes he makes holsters. Yeah,
- 1:18:20Speaker 1: he makes holsters, and and Brett was using we haven't
- 1:18:23Speaker 1: even got here and we'll get it. He was using
- 1:18:25Speaker 1: one of these holsters Brett was when he saved his dad,
- 1:18:27Speaker 1: Glenn's life from the bear. And so they're there and
- 1:18:31Speaker 1: they text a couple of these images specifically the one
- 1:18:34Speaker 1: that you'll see of them and custom in the leather shop,
- 1:18:38Speaker 1: the three of them, and the photo that we were
- 1:18:41Speaker 1: just describing of the non butt cheek fully removed face.
- 1:18:45Speaker 1: So these two things essentially the leak out onto the
- 1:18:48Speaker 1: internet because the fit the mother wants to to be
- 1:18:51Speaker 1: kind and share some of these images with some of
- 1:18:53Speaker 1: the folks that they're there in the shop that day,
- 1:18:55Speaker 1: particularly I think the owner's daughter. But this isn't I'm
- 1:18:57Speaker 1: not it's not clear exactly what happened. We talked to
- 1:19:00Speaker 1: the current um guy who runs that shop and he
- 1:19:05Speaker 1: confirmed that this happened. The Raine Phillips confirmed that this happened.
- 1:19:09Speaker 1: They share these images on a message board. We don't
- 1:19:12Speaker 1: know what message board. We don't know exactly what they
- 1:19:15Speaker 1: shared the images at the time that they were taking
- 1:19:18Speaker 1: so we're talking April believe it's like April when they
- 1:19:22Speaker 1: were in the shop, So somewhere in this general timeframe
- 1:19:25Speaker 1: they share these images out onto a message board. And
- 1:19:28Speaker 1: you guys all know how message boards are, and you
- 1:19:30Speaker 1: know how the internet is in the in and we
- 1:19:34Speaker 1: won't go through all the details because we've also sussed
- 1:19:36Speaker 1: this out pretty far. In the four years following that
- 1:19:41Speaker 1: message board share these images that Brett Bond shares himself
- 1:19:46Speaker 1: for the first time four years later become an urban legend.
- 1:19:49Speaker 1: They are trafficked on many websites. There's fake stories about them.
- 1:19:55Speaker 1: They were assigned to a gentleman named Wes Perkins who
- 1:19:58Speaker 1: was attacked in very much the same wise Glenn Bond.
- 1:20:02Speaker 1: I believe in two thousand eleven, so West Perkins. Somehow
- 1:20:07Speaker 1: we were never able to like nail down the exact
- 1:20:09Speaker 1: moment when someone said, Hey, that's West Perkins. The Bond
- 1:20:13Speaker 1: family believes they know who it was and and they're
- 1:20:15Speaker 1: suing that person. But this is what kind of gets
- 1:20:19Speaker 1: to the point where Brett Bond wants to share these
- 1:20:22Speaker 1: images now, because four years later, this thing has been
- 1:20:26Speaker 1: called a hoax, It's been assigned to another man, it's
- 1:20:30Speaker 1: been spread around the internet for clickbait, it's been it's
- 1:20:34Speaker 1: been mistreated in this way because the real story isn't
- 1:20:36Speaker 1: out there. Can I I want to make sure I'm
- 1:20:49Speaker 1: getting this all. You're gonna have to do this a
- 1:20:52Speaker 1: lot of thing and then anyone else who might just
- 1:20:55Speaker 1: I just want to double check out a couple of things.
- 1:20:56Speaker 1: The timeline, the mauling happens. He takes pictures the day
- 1:21:01Speaker 1: of the malling. Nine days later, he takes pictures at
- 1:21:03Speaker 1: the Double D Diamond Dad. Right away the Diamond D
- 1:21:09Speaker 1: people like, hey, can we see those pictures? He shares
- 1:21:12Speaker 1: the pictures. Then the pictures spread out over the course
- 1:21:15Speaker 1: of years years, years and is but is the kid
- 1:21:18Speaker 1: that took the pictures? Is he aware? So he's aware
- 1:21:23Speaker 1: that the photos he took her being he's aware, miss
- 1:21:26Speaker 1: construed and agitated, but he knows that this is going on,
- 1:21:30Speaker 1: extremely aware of it, agitated by its not a surprise.
- 1:21:34Speaker 1: Now they're not like, oh, we didn't know I got you.
- 1:21:36Speaker 1: So he's like, what the hell, that's that's my dad
- 1:21:38Speaker 1: to this guy, this fellow West, that the did he
- 1:21:43Speaker 1: somehow take ownership and make some sort of monetary gain
- 1:21:46Speaker 1: off these pictures? So how's he getting sued? They this
- 1:21:50Speaker 1: is something that we've not nailed down, so I don't
- 1:21:53Speaker 1: want to bring an It's kind of people to get sued.
- 1:21:56Speaker 1: And then it turns out there's no standing. West isn't
- 1:21:59Speaker 1: getting Steed sue the reporter that the Bond family believes
- 1:22:03Speaker 1: fabricated the West Perkins story connected to the imagery is
- 1:22:08Speaker 1: getting that's possibly getting sused. I mean they believe he
- 1:22:12Speaker 1: fabricated the story and then sold it to other outlets
- 1:22:14Speaker 1: to make money. That's what they believe. So he are
- 1:22:16Speaker 1: using using the West Perkins story in the Bond images profited,
- 1:22:20Speaker 1: which I mean, you know West Perkins. If you we
- 1:22:23Speaker 1: won't go through West Perkin's entire story, but if you think,
- 1:22:25Speaker 1: if you read his story, it is eerily similar to
- 1:22:29Speaker 1: that of Glenn Bond. But if this dude, not to
- 1:22:31Speaker 1: get too off track here, but if this dude, if
- 1:22:34Speaker 1: this journalist, he was using pictures to which he didn't
- 1:22:37Speaker 1: have permission. And I won't mention all the websites, some
- 1:22:41Speaker 1: of them you will know they're in our industry, and
- 1:22:43Speaker 1: we've talked to people at these websites journal journalistically. They
- 1:22:49Speaker 1: sold these things as click bait, right West Perkins man
- 1:22:52Speaker 1: with no face, West Perkins Man with no face all
- 1:22:55Speaker 1: the way up to and I will mention this guy's name,
- 1:22:57Speaker 1: Tom Mirandy. You guys know Tom Mirandy I ended myself
- 1:23:00Speaker 1: to one time. We are two months into this investigation
- 1:23:03Speaker 1: and it was a legitimate investigation. And shout out to
- 1:23:05Speaker 1: Joe and Sam for for helping with this. Tom Miranda
- 1:23:10Speaker 1: post this is after. This is months after Brett Bond
- 1:23:13Speaker 1: has posted these images on his Instagram. Tom Miranda post
- 1:23:17Speaker 1: images on his Instagram and says, check out West Perkins.
- 1:23:21Speaker 1: This is this is a month ago, check out West Perkins. No.
- 1:23:25Speaker 1: I used to buy Tom Miranda's d not DVDs, VHS tapes.
- 1:23:30Speaker 1: One of the kids I had like water trapping with
- 1:23:32Speaker 1: Tom mirandas so Tom rand is the best. Just imagine
- 1:23:35Speaker 1: for me like that. It just highlights the fact that
- 1:23:37Speaker 1: the Internet, you just put this stuff in the blender
- 1:23:39Speaker 1: that is the Internet, and it shoots out weird things
- 1:23:42Speaker 1: at weird times. And so we ended up just saying hey,
- 1:23:45Speaker 1: just bye bye the bye. Tom. No, you're using someone
- 1:23:49Speaker 1: else's images. You're attributing to them too, something that's not
- 1:23:53Speaker 1: true for to get some traffic on your Instagram. And
- 1:23:56Speaker 1: what to think about that? He said, Well, I got
- 1:23:58Speaker 1: it from this story from the America Shooting Journal. It
- 1:24:01Speaker 1: was passed on to me from an outfitter in Africa.
- 1:24:04Speaker 1: So well, that American. It's like okay, that American, yes,
- 1:24:10Speaker 1: and that American Shooting Journal article. If you google today,
- 1:24:12Speaker 1: I think Brett Bond bear attack it, it might come up.
- 1:24:16Speaker 1: It comes up in the first page, and so are
- 1:24:18Speaker 1: we gonna get to hear the actual barytax? Okay, that's
- 1:24:21Speaker 1: where people can plain. And when we did a podcast
- 1:24:23Speaker 1: about this that it took too long to get to
- 1:24:24Speaker 1: the very tach story. But there's so much I don't care.
- 1:24:30Speaker 1: So here we go. So now we're at the point
- 1:24:32Speaker 1: where we have the first element of this, where there
- 1:24:35Speaker 1: is a conspiracy. There is this internet urban legend around
- 1:24:39Speaker 1: these images. All this stuff has happened. Brett Glenn, their
- 1:24:45Speaker 1: their mother slash wife, Lorraine. They know about this. It's
- 1:24:49Speaker 1: agitating to them. So this, among other things, leads to
- 1:24:52Speaker 1: Brett sharing these images. And when he shares the images,
- 1:24:56Speaker 1: does he share them as setting the record straight man? No,
- 1:25:02Speaker 1: he shares them as I want to highlight bear safety.
- 1:25:06Speaker 1: Because he's trained, he's he's taking he's trained, he's taking
- 1:25:09Speaker 1: very constructive n he takes a very constructive and healthful tone,
- 1:25:13Speaker 1: saying like, hey, you're in bear country. Check this out.
- 1:25:15Speaker 1: He doesn't, I mean, I don't. I don't want to
- 1:25:17Speaker 1: give a spoiler aler but the dudes were hunting grizzlies. Yeah,
- 1:25:21Speaker 1: you're you're inviting a certain proximity, which that's a whole
- 1:25:25Speaker 1: another thing. There are there, there are some that you
- 1:25:28Speaker 1: run into some oxym ronic stuff here, but this, there's
- 1:25:30Speaker 1: this is so detailed and so deep that there's almost
- 1:25:33Speaker 1: no way you're not gonna run into some stuff that
- 1:25:35Speaker 1: just doesn't do this story. Um, you know, I stole
- 1:25:38Speaker 1: this from someone down the road, but this is one
- 1:25:40Speaker 1: of those stories that makes its own gravy. Yeah, it's uh,
- 1:25:43Speaker 1: it's full of gravy. So if you want to, if
- 1:25:46Speaker 1: we want to just go back to the actual attack
- 1:25:47Speaker 1: and we'll go through this briefly, because it's got a
- 1:25:49Speaker 1: lot of stuff that it's it's lingering, it's lingering. You
- 1:25:51Speaker 1: want to know what actually happened. So guy has no
- 1:25:54Speaker 1: face and he uh, we know the his his his
- 1:25:57Speaker 1: face ripped off. We also know that nine days later
- 1:26:00Speaker 1: he's doing okay generally okay, walking around talking to people,
- 1:26:04Speaker 1: taking photos. So now those are the kind of facts
- 1:26:06Speaker 1: the structure of what we know. Well, um, if you
- 1:26:10Speaker 1: want to get to know bretton Glenn Bond. Glenn Bond
- 1:26:12Speaker 1: is a retired teacher. They're both natives of the Solo, Alaska.
- 1:26:15Speaker 1: Brett Brett Bond is a thirty three year old hunting
- 1:26:17Speaker 1: guy he's been a hunting guide basically his whole life.
- 1:26:20Speaker 1: You go to his Instagram, you look around. This dude
- 1:26:22Speaker 1: is an Alaskans. Alaskan like he's hunting, fishing. That's what
- 1:26:26Speaker 1: he does. He guides all year round. He guides bears, cariboo, whatever,
- 1:26:31Speaker 1: everything you know that to be available in Alaska. This
- 1:26:33Speaker 1: guy's done it. Pretty hardcore outdoorsman. His dad is a
- 1:26:36Speaker 1: similarly hardcore outdoorsman, but he was a retired teacher and
- 1:26:39Speaker 1: also a hunting guide in his free time. These guys
- 1:26:43Speaker 1: have had scrapes with bears over the years. His his
- 1:26:47Speaker 1: dad was charged by a bear with a client one time.
- 1:26:49Speaker 1: There's this whole story that you can read about or
- 1:26:52Speaker 1: listen to in our podcast. So these guys know their
- 1:26:55Speaker 1: way around this country. They're not rookies. There's no way
- 1:26:59Speaker 1: to think that they want to know exactly what they
- 1:27:02Speaker 1: have to do. In fact, Glenn Bond has killed a
- 1:27:04Speaker 1: charging grizzly before, so he knows he knows what to do.
- 1:27:08Speaker 1: So these guys, they've been hunting together since Brett was seven,
- 1:27:12Speaker 1: he's now thirty three. His dad's seventy seven, and they
- 1:27:16Speaker 1: decided that they want to go on a bear hunt.
- 1:27:18Speaker 1: It's in April. I think I want to say April,
- 1:27:21Speaker 1: yet it's and it's in early April. Bears are just
- 1:27:23Speaker 1: coming out of their dens, are still in their dens.
- 1:27:25Speaker 1: They're gonna take a snow machine up the DENIALI Highway
- 1:27:28Speaker 1: into the mountains. It's not on an actual highway from
- 1:27:32Speaker 1: a lodge twenty five miles they went on snow machine.
- 1:27:38Speaker 1: So I'll just trying to speed this up because it
- 1:27:39Speaker 1: take awhile a snow machine they're gonna they drive. He
- 1:27:43Speaker 1: describes in detail that morning. He said it was it
- 1:27:46Speaker 1: was a beautiful morning. It was just starting to get warm,
- 1:27:49Speaker 1: so the snow was starting to melt. So they didn't
- 1:27:51Speaker 1: want to get too far away because they didn't want
- 1:27:53Speaker 1: to get into a situation on two snow machines where
- 1:27:55Speaker 1: they couldn't turn back if the snow was to melt
- 1:27:58Speaker 1: too much. And so Brett and Glenn come upon what
- 1:28:02Speaker 1: they think is a den hole in the side of
- 1:28:05Speaker 1: a hill. This this hill is pretty has a pretty
- 1:28:08Speaker 1: steep slope going down to where they have parked their
- 1:28:11Speaker 1: snow machines. And they see brett SE's tracks going in
- 1:28:17Speaker 1: and then possibly tracks going around the backside of this den,
- 1:28:21Speaker 1: this hole in the side of the mountain. So they
- 1:28:22Speaker 1: have this conversation, what are we gonna do? They're looking
- 1:28:26Speaker 1: for a bear. They're pretty sure there might be one
- 1:28:27Speaker 1: in there. Brett decides he's gonna go back and check
- 1:28:30Speaker 1: for the check for these tracks, exiting tracks to see.
- 1:28:34Speaker 1: He goes up this hill, up this slope around the den.
- 1:28:38Speaker 1: He's checking for tracks. He hears screaming. His father is,
- 1:28:43Speaker 1: as he's described it to me, behind him, maybe a
- 1:28:46Speaker 1: hundred yards maybe less, down a slope. Glenn Bond is
- 1:28:52Speaker 1: sitting on a snow machine like facing the den. Basically,
- 1:28:57Speaker 1: this bear comes essentially charging out of the den. Brett
- 1:29:02Speaker 1: remembers hearing Glenn saying he's coming out. He's coming out,
- 1:29:04Speaker 1: He's coming out, And before he can turn, he sees
- 1:29:07Speaker 1: just a flash of fur. This eight foot grizzly comes
- 1:29:09Speaker 1: out of the den and and basically as Brett describes it,
- 1:29:14Speaker 1: takes his father like a rag doll and just throws
- 1:29:16Speaker 1: him down there. But his dad's lining up. Try to
- 1:29:18Speaker 1: get a crack, so his dad, so his dad has
- 1:29:21Speaker 1: had this happened before. He's got a rifle in his hand.
- 1:29:24Speaker 1: He gets a crack at it, as the bears running,
- 1:29:26Speaker 1: he pulls his rifle up and again he's done this before. Blouch, blouch. Well,
- 1:29:32Speaker 1: it turns out the bear had just dipped down into
- 1:29:35Speaker 1: a little depression in the space between Glenn and the den,
- 1:29:40Speaker 1: and he shoots over the back of this spear and
- 1:29:43Speaker 1: he's got you know, seconds, and it's on him and
- 1:29:47Speaker 1: they're they're rolling down the hill together. And so Brett
- 1:29:52Speaker 1: turns around and sees this happening. And the reports from
- 1:29:57Speaker 1: the folks that investigated the scene state fit. While they
- 1:29:59Speaker 1: fish the investigating scene, his footprints look like an Olympic
- 1:30:03Speaker 1: track athlete, like he doesn't, you know, as he would
- 1:30:06Speaker 1: have describe, he doesn't really remember what exactly he did.
- 1:30:09Speaker 1: He pulls his three fifty seven pistol from his diamond
- 1:30:13Speaker 1: de holster. Three seven. I think it's three fifty seven.
- 1:30:16Speaker 1: I don't want to get it. I might be wrong
- 1:30:17Speaker 1: about that. He pulls his pistol. This is where this
- 1:30:20Speaker 1: is pretty. This is where the internet trolls. Yeah, they're
- 1:30:23Speaker 1: gonna say no, They're like, oh, three seven, I'm sorry, Brett.
- 1:30:31Speaker 1: Meg means you don't have to shoot twice or you know,
- 1:30:34Speaker 1: I'm sorry if it was if it wasn't a three seven.
- 1:30:36Speaker 1: I'll go, I'll I'll amend this if I need to,
- 1:30:38Speaker 1: we can look it up. But pulls his pistol and
- 1:30:42Speaker 1: just sprints towards it, towards his dad, his dad. At
- 1:30:45Speaker 1: this point, the bears on top of his father. All
- 1:30:48Speaker 1: that Brett can see is the bear and his dad
- 1:30:51Speaker 1: and blood. Then this is there's melee. They're screaming. As
- 1:30:56Speaker 1: you would try to imagine what might be happening here.
- 1:30:59Speaker 1: He runs to his dad, pulls up his pistol I
- 1:31:03Speaker 1: think or three h something, and he dumps a couple
- 1:31:11Speaker 1: of rounds into the vitals of the bear, and at
- 1:31:15Speaker 1: this point the bear kind of stumbles off. His dad
- 1:31:18Speaker 1: stands up. He shoots it in the chest. It comes
- 1:31:22Speaker 1: down a little bit. Then at some point in all
- 1:31:24Speaker 1: of this, shoots it between the eyes as it's coming
- 1:31:27Speaker 1: at him, and he describes He's like I knew, I
- 1:31:31Speaker 1: just knew I had to keep between my dad and
- 1:31:32Speaker 1: the bear. And at some point I knew if I didn't,
- 1:31:35Speaker 1: if this shot didn't go exactly where it needed to,
- 1:31:37Speaker 1: I was dead. My dad was dead. And this is
- 1:31:40Speaker 1: all I mean, this is, you know, imagine this happens
- 1:31:42Speaker 1: in the span of thirty seconds, who knows there's no
- 1:31:45Speaker 1: way to tie him it out, so that all of
- 1:31:48Speaker 1: this happens. And if you you know, if you think
- 1:31:51Speaker 1: about like it's it's here's a guy that's trained in survival.
- 1:31:56Speaker 1: He's he's trained in back country medicine. He's a guy
- 1:32:00Speaker 1: he kind of understands this. So I think some of
- 1:32:02Speaker 1: this for him, if I was just judging his action,
- 1:32:05Speaker 1: some of him is just what he would do for anyone.
- 1:32:07Speaker 1: But there's an element of he gets this done. As
- 1:32:11Speaker 1: he describes it. He describes in a pretty calm way,
- 1:32:13Speaker 1: like hey man, I ran down the hill and boom,
- 1:32:16Speaker 1: boom boom. This bear is dead. So bears dead. He
- 1:32:21Speaker 1: describes thinking he's gonna seeing his dad in a pool
- 1:32:26Speaker 1: of blood, thinking he's gonna arrive to his father being dead,
- 1:32:29Speaker 1: or the last moments of his father's life, you know,
- 1:32:31Speaker 1: one or the other. Not thinking that. So he gets
- 1:32:34Speaker 1: over there and he says that his dad is while
- 1:32:40Speaker 1: his face is torn apart, he's got some injuries in
- 1:32:42Speaker 1: his wrist. His dad is complaining about his wrist injury,
- 1:32:45Speaker 1: not really understanding. I don't think what's going on with
- 1:32:47Speaker 1: the face, and Brett tries to do a bunch of things.
- 1:32:52Speaker 1: He checks his father for bleeding. He determines that there's
- 1:32:56Speaker 1: no arterial bleeding. He's not gonna bleed out in any way.
- 1:32:59Speaker 1: That the main he did your damages to the face.
- 1:33:02Speaker 1: So he takes off his handkerchief, tries to tie it
- 1:33:04Speaker 1: around his dad's face as you might try to repair
- 1:33:07Speaker 1: the damage. His dad immediately begins to choke on his
- 1:33:10Speaker 1: own flesh, and so at this moment, at this point,
- 1:33:16Speaker 1: his dad is talking fairly coherently. Doesn't seem like other
- 1:33:25Speaker 1: than him complaining about his wrists, seems like he can
- 1:33:27Speaker 1: he can have a conversation with his son. The physical
- 1:33:29Speaker 1: act of talking, though, looks like it would be really hard.
- 1:33:32Speaker 1: And there's a whole bunch of other as we get
- 1:33:34Speaker 1: down the road in the stories, a whole bunch of
- 1:33:36Speaker 1: other things that happened that you just you don't think
- 1:33:39Speaker 1: with an injury like that that he would be able
- 1:33:40Speaker 1: to pull off being that cogent or at the physical
- 1:33:43Speaker 1: act of moving your mouth up and down, when your
- 1:33:45Speaker 1: tongue up and down and making the words come out,
- 1:33:47Speaker 1: not just the mental state, but like actually being able
- 1:33:49Speaker 1: to the physical words physical part. So you know, fast
- 1:33:54Speaker 1: forward to how this video gets made. Glenn Bond never
- 1:33:58Speaker 1: loses control once I think he realizes he's not gonna die.
- 1:34:01Speaker 1: Brett realizes he's not going to die. In the moment,
- 1:34:04Speaker 1: Glenn Bond is the toughest person I've ever heard of.
- 1:34:09Speaker 1: He never loses control. He's extructing his son what to do.
- 1:34:13Speaker 1: He instructs his son to take this video so his
- 1:34:15Speaker 1: moms so they can in case he dies or something,
- 1:34:17Speaker 1: that his mom will know what happened. And so there's
- 1:34:21Speaker 1: somewhere out there's a minute long video of a man
- 1:34:23Speaker 1: with no face just explaining these things, explaining what happened essentially,
- 1:34:29Speaker 1: and so a bunch of things happen takes him about
- 1:34:32Speaker 1: an hour, I believe, if I'm recollecting that right, about
- 1:34:34Speaker 1: an hour to get on the snow machine and head
- 1:34:36Speaker 1: back to the lodge where they were staying. It's about
- 1:34:38Speaker 1: twenty four a little bit over a twenty four mile
- 1:34:40Speaker 1: ride on a snow machine. So so Brett loads his
- 1:34:42Speaker 1: dad up behind him and they ride. I think it
- 1:34:45Speaker 1: takes another hour to get back to the lodge. All
- 1:34:49Speaker 1: the while his dad is his back there with he
- 1:34:51Speaker 1: can't cover his face up. There's there's not a whole
- 1:34:55Speaker 1: lot you can do other than just ride the snow machine.
- 1:34:58Speaker 1: And to this point again in he reiterated, this guy
- 1:35:01Speaker 1: is with it. He is telling his son what to do.
- 1:35:05Speaker 1: He's telling his son to like, we gotta calm down,
- 1:35:07Speaker 1: we gotta stay calm, we gotta this is what we
- 1:35:10Speaker 1: gotta do. They were they able to radio for help
- 1:35:13Speaker 1: ahead of time? Yes, I believe that they did, because well,
- 1:35:17Speaker 1: they radio for help. But they're staying at a lodge
- 1:35:20Speaker 1: that's pretty far out there. In the story that we're
- 1:35:23Speaker 1: working on. We continue to work and we talk about
- 1:35:25Speaker 1: exactly how far the lodge is from the nearest town,
- 1:35:29Speaker 1: and then the town from the nearest hospital. This all
- 1:35:31Speaker 1: comes into play when they finally get back to the lodge.
- 1:35:35Speaker 1: They meet a guy there named Dan, asked us, who's
- 1:35:38Speaker 1: a sheriff in Wyoming, and he I believe his Bret's godfather.
- 1:35:42Speaker 1: He's got a relationship to the family. He's there, he
- 1:35:44Speaker 1: knows them. He's the first person who sees them come back.
- 1:35:47Speaker 1: He this is a guy who's been a sheriff. He's retired.
- 1:35:50Speaker 1: He's been a shaff for forty years. He's seen some
- 1:35:51Speaker 1: ship he's seen some people shot He's seen some awful things.
- 1:35:56Speaker 1: He says, the worst thing he's ever seen his life.
- 1:35:57Speaker 1: By the time they do a twenty a mile ride
- 1:36:00Speaker 1: back to this lodge, the skin, the flesh that was
- 1:36:04Speaker 1: you can see in the video, is now sluffed off
- 1:36:06Speaker 1: of his face. As they described it to me, the
- 1:36:09Speaker 1: chin is exposed. Like a chin you imagine you're the
- 1:36:12Speaker 1: bones underneath your chin is now exposed. So they now
- 1:36:19Speaker 1: have to go to They go to the owners of lodge.
- 1:36:20Speaker 1: They start calling for metaback helicopters to come take him hospital.
- 1:36:26Speaker 1: They so they do all of this while this is happening.
- 1:36:29Speaker 1: They can't get anybody to commit to come. I think
- 1:36:31Speaker 1: they the owners the lodge that they went through two
- 1:36:33Speaker 1: or three phone calls before they could get somebody to
- 1:36:35Speaker 1: commit via weather timing location that they were safe to
- 1:36:39Speaker 1: come and pick them up and ferry them to the hospital.
- 1:36:42Speaker 1: While this is happening, Danes is out there trying to
- 1:36:44Speaker 1: keep everybody calm. He tries to give He describes this
- 1:36:48Speaker 1: moment where he's trying to give He's asking Glen Bond, Hey,
- 1:36:52Speaker 1: what can I do for him? Glen Bond says, I'd
- 1:36:54Speaker 1: like to get a sip of water. He puts to
- 1:36:57Speaker 1: get some water, puts a straw in it, tries to
- 1:36:59Speaker 1: give it to Glenn end can't get the straw in
- 1:37:02Speaker 1: his mouth, can't get the straw through the shards of flesh,
- 1:37:06Speaker 1: through the gore and into his mouth, and it can't drink.
- 1:37:11Speaker 1: So that's just a moment that I'll from that, from
- 1:37:12Speaker 1: hearing that conversation as the moment I remember, because it's
- 1:37:14Speaker 1: just like it notes how ridiculous all of this really is.
- 1:37:19Speaker 1: So at this point, they finally get ahold of a
- 1:37:22Speaker 1: guy named Brett Westcott who's a Medlife Alaska pilot. He's
- 1:37:26Speaker 1: on a U. S. Army pilot in Iraq in a
- 1:37:28Speaker 1: bunch of places. Great dude, badass dude. He agrees that
- 1:37:32Speaker 1: it's safe that they can fly. They're gonna go pick
- 1:37:35Speaker 1: him up at the lodge and ferry him to Providence Hospital,
- 1:37:38Speaker 1: the best hospital in Alaska, most of They're gonna go there,
- 1:37:42Speaker 1: pick him up, take him there. He lands. He describes
- 1:37:45Speaker 1: he's got to flight medics on hand. They land there.
- 1:37:48Speaker 1: He describes similar. This guy's seeing some ship as well.
- 1:37:51Speaker 1: He's been through war, he's fairy special operators into missions.
- 1:37:56Speaker 1: He's seen some stuff. Same thing says, I've never seen
- 1:38:01Speaker 1: anything like this in my life. I thought, this person
- 1:38:02Speaker 1: is gonna die. There's no way. At this point, you're
- 1:38:05Speaker 1: really like the pictures are true. Yeah, And this is
- 1:38:08Speaker 1: where that's where it's important too, because I'm we are
- 1:38:11Speaker 1: continuing to say like there's no way, and we're not
- 1:38:14Speaker 1: even to the most amazing point. I don't think, but
- 1:38:17Speaker 1: there's no way. And then you get these people that
- 1:38:20Speaker 1: have no reason to lie, that have no reason because
- 1:38:23Speaker 1: we I won't I won't mention the names of the people.
- 1:38:25Speaker 1: Along the investigation, we ran into people that said this
- 1:38:28Speaker 1: is bullshit. People in high ranking spots in Alaska fish
- 1:38:34Speaker 1: and game other places. They won't say this on the record.
- 1:38:38Speaker 1: We've had I had biologists. They're saying the photos bullshit. Yep.
- 1:38:41Speaker 1: I just thought another thing. It looks like never mind,
- 1:38:46Speaker 1: he had your chance. Anyway. So this Brett West got
- 1:38:50Speaker 1: another really good interview. He really talks about what happens
- 1:38:54Speaker 1: when they come to pick him up and you show
- 1:38:56Speaker 1: him the picture and he says, yep, oh yeah, yep,
- 1:39:01Speaker 1: it's worse. He picture doesn't do it justice. That's what
- 1:39:04Speaker 1: he says. He says. By the time again, by the time,
- 1:39:07Speaker 1: oh This is hours later when he arrives all this
- 1:39:10Speaker 1: skin that was kind of newly ripped open, ripped off
- 1:39:13Speaker 1: of the skull of Glenn. Bond has kind of through
- 1:39:16Speaker 1: a snowmobile ride through time, laying around trying to drink water,
- 1:39:19Speaker 1: all these things has kind of like peeled itself away,
- 1:39:22Speaker 1: fallen away. The weight of the flesh has pulled it
- 1:39:25Speaker 1: away from the face, and so he he describes this
- 1:39:29Speaker 1: as they're getting I don't I'm sure how to turn
- 1:39:32Speaker 1: this over. But as they're getting Glenn onto the helicopter,
- 1:39:38Speaker 1: Brett Bond, who has has been a hero to this point,
- 1:39:42Speaker 1: is taking photos as a cell phone. Now he's taking
- 1:39:44Speaker 1: photos of the badges of the flight medics and the pilot.
- 1:39:49Speaker 1: There's a quick verse I have to do a quick
- 1:39:50Speaker 1: version of a story that would take a whole another
- 1:39:52Speaker 1: podcast to tell at this point. So when Brett is
- 1:39:55Speaker 1: taking photos of these people's name tags, the plan is
- 1:39:58Speaker 1: to take Glenn to Providence Hospital, which again it says,
- 1:40:02Speaker 1: the top hospital in Alaska. If your face is messed up,
- 1:40:05Speaker 1: you're gonna want to go there. Probably Glenn and Brett
- 1:40:10Speaker 1: both refuse to go there. They want to go somewhere else.
- 1:40:14Speaker 1: They will not go to Providence, and I'm gonna I
- 1:40:16Speaker 1: have to go through this quickly. Apologies to anyone that
- 1:40:19Speaker 1: was involved in this that really wants to the true
- 1:40:21Speaker 1: story out there. We'll get it out, promise. The what
- 1:40:27Speaker 1: happened years before. Brett Bond is on a bear hunt
- 1:40:34Speaker 1: years before five six years before this attack. He's on
- 1:40:38Speaker 1: a bear hunt. He has incredible insomnia, doesn't sleep for
- 1:40:41Speaker 1: ten fourteen, doesn't sleep for over ten days. Comes back
- 1:40:45Speaker 1: to to Wasilla, goes to the hospital. They give him
- 1:40:49Speaker 1: some some steroids in predator. They think he just has
- 1:40:53Speaker 1: a who knows what. They think he has just terrible insomnia.
- 1:40:57Speaker 1: This keeps getting worse. His parents bring him back to
- 1:41:01Speaker 1: Providence Medical. Bringing back to the doctor eventually makes it
- 1:41:04Speaker 1: the Province Medical. He goes through a psychotic break, psychotic
- 1:41:08Speaker 1: episode that lasts months where I read a five hunder
- 1:41:13Speaker 1: page legal document of discovery from all of the all
- 1:41:16Speaker 1: the doctors and nurses that treated Brett Bond. He goes
- 1:41:19Speaker 1: through insane ordeal over six or so months, where he
- 1:41:25Speaker 1: is he doesn't know where he is. He thinks all
- 1:41:27Speaker 1: the doctors are FBI agents. There's there's reports in these
- 1:41:30Speaker 1: medical documents I read where he's in a shower with
- 1:41:32Speaker 1: his clothes on, defecating in his own pants. He has
- 1:41:37Speaker 1: a prolonged psychological battle where they are giving him heavy
- 1:41:41Speaker 1: doses of steroids and other drugs. His parent that his
- 1:41:46Speaker 1: his mom, Lraine Phillips, his dad. They're Jehovah's witnesses and
- 1:41:51Speaker 1: so they don't believe in medicine. They believe the medicine
- 1:41:55Speaker 1: is the problem. So they have a battle with the
- 1:41:57Speaker 1: Providence Medical team over this. Eventually, the Providence Medical team
- 1:42:02Speaker 1: bands the parents from the visiting their son. They only
- 1:42:06Speaker 1: give him like a couple hours a week to medical custody.
- 1:42:10Speaker 1: So eventually this goes into the courts. They take metal
- 1:42:12Speaker 1: I am skipping over so much, but they there's some
- 1:42:17Speaker 1: serious foundation laid for them to not want to deal
- 1:42:20Speaker 1: with Providence medicals. What do you see Their yell review
- 1:42:23Speaker 1: that it's not it's not great. So they so I'll
- 1:42:27Speaker 1: just say. Eventually, Lorraine Phillips, Bret's mother, they go to
- 1:42:33Speaker 1: a different hospital. The rain is uh. A nurse is
- 1:42:38Speaker 1: after I can't this is just gonna be bad. After
- 1:42:42Speaker 1: there's a legal battle the state of Alaska. It's medical
- 1:42:45Speaker 1: custody of Brett bon because they feel like his family
- 1:42:49Speaker 1: is threatening to allow him to die rather than have
- 1:42:52Speaker 1: him take medicine. This is a whole another thing. Eventually,
- 1:42:55Speaker 1: this battle gets so intense a nurse is wheeling Brett
- 1:42:59Speaker 1: Bond into an l of Later in the hospital, according
- 1:43:02Speaker 1: to court documents, Lorraine Phillips comes in, pushes, pushes, the
- 1:43:05Speaker 1: nurse takes Brandon Brett in the wheelchair, pushes him away,
- 1:43:08Speaker 1: takes him to a rehab clinic. Uh kidnaps the kid,
- 1:43:14Speaker 1: kidnaps her own kid. If there is such a thing
- 1:43:17Speaker 1: as getting this is This was in the National Spotlight,
- 1:43:20Speaker 1: International Spotlight. If you google free Brett Bond. This is
- 1:43:25Speaker 1: pre bit, This is alway pre bar attack. This is it.
- 1:43:29Speaker 1: It makes its own gravy. It's a civil liberties case,
- 1:43:32Speaker 1: had been making its own grades. It's the gravies. It's
- 1:43:35Speaker 1: three three layers already think so and I apologized Brett, Glenn, Lorraine,
- 1:43:40Speaker 1: I just butchered that. But you guys get the idea
- 1:43:42Speaker 1: that there was a national story. They're still telling the
- 1:43:45Speaker 1: abbreviated version under d arrest, under durest. So I'm asking
- 1:43:49Speaker 1: for the brief because there's no whether this would be
- 1:43:51Speaker 1: just hours and hours um and then folks that they're
- 1:43:54Speaker 1: gonna be able to explore this whole thing. Yeah, yeah,
- 1:43:56Speaker 1: we're gonna we have I have a podcast where I
- 1:43:58Speaker 1: talked to Glenn and we went through this. But we're
- 1:43:59Speaker 1: gonna do more because I think this this needs these more.
- 1:44:02Speaker 1: I've talked to Brett's lawyer, um Mario Bird up there,
- 1:44:06Speaker 1: and he just he laid it only pretty heavy that
- 1:44:09Speaker 1: this is a civil liberties case. There's a term called
- 1:44:11Speaker 1: psychological rights that's now involved. There's all these other things
- 1:44:14Speaker 1: that we could get into it another time. Anyhow, this
- 1:44:17Speaker 1: is why Brett and Glenn do not want to go
- 1:44:20Speaker 1: the Providence. Brett told me he's like the reason why
- 1:44:23Speaker 1: I didn't want to go because I spent seven the
- 1:44:26Speaker 1: way he puts it, I spent seven months behind the
- 1:44:29Speaker 1: walls at Providence. He describes like a prison basically in
- 1:44:33Speaker 1: the quote that he gave me. So anyway, they get in,
- 1:44:35Speaker 1: they get in the helicopter, they decide they're gonna go
- 1:44:38Speaker 1: to Matt su General, which is a hospital um closer,
- 1:44:43Speaker 1: you know, probably less suited to take on this gets
- 1:44:47Speaker 1: his name from the Matt Nowskins who's sitting the rivers.
- 1:44:51Speaker 1: That's why it's good to be on here. Um, here's
- 1:44:54Speaker 1: another point. There in the helicopter, they're flying down some
- 1:44:58Speaker 1: random valley on the way to Matts New General Glenn
- 1:45:03Speaker 1: Bond starts directing the pilots on which is the quickert?
- 1:45:07Speaker 1: How what the quickest way is to get to hospital?
- 1:45:10Speaker 1: Here's the mayo of no face. It's hours now since
- 1:45:13Speaker 1: he was brutally attacked by a grizzly bear, and he
- 1:45:16Speaker 1: is coaching enough, can't drink water, but still coaching enough
- 1:45:19Speaker 1: to be like, take a left here, head over this way.
- 1:45:23Speaker 1: So um, there's another point now you gotta get to
- 1:45:26Speaker 1: In the urban legend, during those four years where no
- 1:45:28Speaker 1: one knew about this, there was a point in a
- 1:45:31Speaker 1: messageboard post that I read where someone said I heard
- 1:45:35Speaker 1: Glenn Bond never took any painkillers or narcotics and he
- 1:45:41Speaker 1: medicined during this ordeal. It's true. So I talked to
- 1:45:46Speaker 1: Dr Susan Dean, the surgeon who put his face back together.
- 1:45:50Speaker 1: Now this is the gravy. Is you're aware of the
- 1:45:53Speaker 1: gravy at this point, this is even more it's bubbling. Yeah,
- 1:45:56Speaker 1: this is even more gravy for you. This is a
- 1:45:59Speaker 1: big pot. Dr Susan Dean is awesome. People that work
- 1:46:02Speaker 1: for her. I talked to people in her office. They
- 1:46:04Speaker 1: she's like a god to them. They love her. She's
- 1:46:06Speaker 1: a bubbly, effervescent person. When we first talked to her,
- 1:46:09Speaker 1: she said, I love the gore of plastic surgery, and
- 1:46:14Speaker 1: I love bears. In her office hangs a sign on
- 1:46:19Speaker 1: the front door that says bear feet Welcome. Be a
- 1:46:23Speaker 1: r feet welcome. It's got bear signs. The floor mats
- 1:46:25Speaker 1: have grizzly bears on him. Her business card has a
- 1:46:28Speaker 1: grizzly bear on it. The logo of her practice is
- 1:46:32Speaker 1: a grizzly bear. There's grizzly bear pictures, there's cartoon grizzly
- 1:46:35Speaker 1: bears everywhere in her office. And she describes herself as
- 1:46:39Speaker 1: loving the gore of plastic surgery. So she happens to
- 1:46:44Speaker 1: be at the hospital that day when when Glenn lands
- 1:46:47Speaker 1: and needs some help. So she is she's called upon
- 1:46:50Speaker 1: to go take a look at this guy. She goes
- 1:46:52Speaker 1: in there, she's talking to him. He is. He basically says,
- 1:46:56Speaker 1: just do it here, referencing the surgery. Just do it here.
- 1:47:01Speaker 1: They're in like an e er area. This is, as
- 1:47:03Speaker 1: you imagine a pretty pretty complicated surgery. He's like, just
- 1:47:07Speaker 1: do some do some local anesthetics and do it here.
- 1:47:09Speaker 1: She has to explain to him, Hey, we kind of
- 1:47:12Speaker 1: we have to clean this up. She makes a joke
- 1:47:14Speaker 1: that the bear probably didn't brush his teeth before he
- 1:47:16Speaker 1: ripped her face off. Um. They have this conversation where
- 1:47:20Speaker 1: she's trying to convince him to take some sort of narcotics,
- 1:47:24Speaker 1: some sort of pain killer, something to help all the
- 1:47:27Speaker 1: pain of what it's going to be in an incredibly
- 1:47:29Speaker 1: invasive surgery because they must clean his face out. Been
- 1:47:32Speaker 1: through this such a long long time, just trying to
- 1:47:34Speaker 1: heal the pain and take a break regular this one man. Yeah,
- 1:47:41Speaker 1: so they have this. They developed this rapport which remains
- 1:47:45Speaker 1: today years later. He's a hard man. She is. She
- 1:47:50Speaker 1: sings and roses. I wasn't comment, and I was coming
- 1:47:53Speaker 1: on healing the pain. Oh yeah, not coming on the
- 1:47:56Speaker 1: length of the guns and roses meat. I was singing
- 1:47:59Speaker 1: that song I've never seen before. Is that on sale?
- 1:48:02Speaker 1: I believe it is soon dot com dot com? No, yeah,
- 1:48:07Speaker 1: I was making the pain pain management reference. Good, have
- 1:48:10Speaker 1: they sent me the so he does indeed refuse, He refuses.
- 1:48:14Speaker 1: They sent me even the local anesthetic. There's some local
- 1:48:17Speaker 1: anesthetic involved, because I think it's impossible, it would be
- 1:48:20Speaker 1: impossible to do with that, because it's against his religious
- 1:48:22Speaker 1: convictions to take medicaid, to take like heavy medication. I'm
- 1:48:25Speaker 1: hesitant to say that, but that would be the assumption.
- 1:48:28Speaker 1: Hesitant to say because I've never talked to him, He's
- 1:48:29Speaker 1: never spoken publicly on this. His wife, his kid, his kid,
- 1:48:34Speaker 1: his wife, you know, talked about him a lot. So
- 1:48:37Speaker 1: I'm hesitant to say that's what it is. But all
- 1:48:40Speaker 1: intensive purposes, that's likely what led him to refuse those
- 1:48:44Speaker 1: that treatment. And they sent me the medical board in
- 1:48:46Speaker 1: his hospital room that says, you know, no local, no narcotics,
- 1:48:50Speaker 1: no nothing, no blood transfusions, no, nothing like that. And
- 1:48:54Speaker 1: so he goes through I can't remember like one surgery
- 1:48:58Speaker 1: that lasted three or four hour hours. And if you
- 1:49:00Speaker 1: go back to the time when you first saw that photo,
- 1:49:02Speaker 1: if I told you that the dude's face was put
- 1:49:04Speaker 1: back together in a couple of hours by one surgery.
- 1:49:07Speaker 1: He had two other surgeries months later to to fix
- 1:49:10Speaker 1: his ear. And I believe his I or knows, but
- 1:49:14Speaker 1: these are months later. So this is one surgery with
- 1:49:17Speaker 1: no painkillers. He gets another piece of gravy. They had.
- 1:49:23Speaker 1: Most of the rooms in the hospital were full the children,
- 1:49:26Speaker 1: so they had to bring him to the children's section
- 1:49:29Speaker 1: of the hospital. Lucky kid to recover. He goes into
- 1:49:33Speaker 1: his recovery room. It's a children's room. It's full of
- 1:49:36Speaker 1: cartoon bears, the wallpapers cartoon bears, and so he recovers.
- 1:49:42Speaker 1: The bears already come on people with the bears. So
- 1:49:45Speaker 1: he recovers. And again, if you get into the relationship
- 1:49:50Speaker 1: that Lorraine Phillips, his wife, had with the doctors of
- 1:49:54Speaker 1: Providence during the Free Brett Bond incident, this is a
- 1:49:57Speaker 1: very com bad relationship. It's ridiculously combat it and he
- 1:50:00Speaker 1: gets it's it's mixed up in religious ideologies and all
- 1:50:03Speaker 1: kinds of things, you know, civil liberties. But then you
- 1:50:06Speaker 1: have the relationship between Glenn Bond and this doctor Susan Dean,
- 1:50:12Speaker 1: which is all about respect, all about talking to each other,
- 1:50:16Speaker 1: listening to each other, and they get through this. It's
- 1:50:20Speaker 1: clean as humanly possible. Nine days he's walking around, didn't
- 1:50:25Speaker 1: take a didn't visit, visiting the holster shop, and so
- 1:50:29Speaker 1: she listens to him and all that. So anyway, that's
- 1:50:33Speaker 1: that's really not really not the end of the story
- 1:50:35Speaker 1: even then. But let's say it's a lot. Let's say
- 1:50:39Speaker 1: it's a lie. What would be the motivation? Like, I
- 1:50:44Speaker 1: don't get like what, Like I looked at it him
- 1:50:46Speaker 1: like that's not truth, a lie, but like like if
- 1:50:49Speaker 1: you think about it, like people that still would want
- 1:50:51Speaker 1: to say, like, oh, it's not he didn't that didn't happen.
- 1:50:53Speaker 1: It's fake. Yeah, what what's to gain? I thought about
- 1:50:57Speaker 1: this a lot because I thought about my own livityes
- 1:51:00Speaker 1: like bullshit when I first saw it. Now you'll remember, Spencer,
- 1:51:04Speaker 1: there was a very fake situation. It was only maybe
- 1:51:09Speaker 1: six or eight months before we learned about this Mommy
- 1:51:11Speaker 1: the mummy guy who was buried alive, the Russian guy
- 1:51:15Speaker 1: who was buried alive by a bear and then discovered cashed,
- 1:51:18Speaker 1: cashed by a bear. And there's this video online video
- 1:51:22Speaker 1: of a guy that looks, I mean, it looks so
- 1:51:24Speaker 1: real like a mummy, like a mummy. And so that's
- 1:51:28Speaker 1: what immediately came to my mid and that that generated
- 1:51:32Speaker 1: a lot of clicks I see, So you start to
- 1:51:35Speaker 1: think of what is going on here. Some people are
- 1:51:37Speaker 1: just pranksters. Some people want to get clicks, some people
- 1:51:40Speaker 1: like the macabre. Who knows. There's no way to really know,
- 1:51:44Speaker 1: but that that came into my mind is like this
- 1:51:47Speaker 1: that story because it was completely debunked, but it looked
- 1:51:50Speaker 1: very real. It was very compelling. We all remember when
- 1:51:53Speaker 1: it happened. When we were actually in the office, We're
- 1:51:55Speaker 1: all walking around going, WHOA, see this, see this, see this,
- 1:51:58Speaker 1: and the the origin of that to you, it was
- 1:52:00Speaker 1: like a motive you wouldn't even think of. It was
- 1:52:02Speaker 1: for like the set of some low budget film that
- 1:52:06Speaker 1: they were just like messing around and trying to figure
- 1:52:08Speaker 1: out to make up and then this just got out
- 1:52:09Speaker 1: on the internet. So like when you ask about a motive,
- 1:52:11Speaker 1: right like, there's motives you can't even comprehend. That doesn't
- 1:52:14Speaker 1: that doesn't even necessarily there's like a motive, but it's
- 1:52:17Speaker 1: like just the way people want to put things out
- 1:52:19Speaker 1: into the world. And so you know, maybe this is
- 1:52:21Speaker 1: a real photo and it got distorted, which was the
- 1:52:23Speaker 1: actual truth? Maybe this is I had people read articles
- 1:52:28Speaker 1: of full articles of people debunking this as Hollywood special effects,
- 1:52:32Speaker 1: as people saying it was completely fake, obviously fake, you know,
- 1:52:37Speaker 1: obviously a hoax. I got another question for you, who
- 1:52:42Speaker 1: was the guy that the photo was ascribed to, West Perkins.
- 1:52:45Speaker 1: What's the west EPs say about this? I have I'm
- 1:52:50Speaker 1: kind of close to getting hold of West, but but
- 1:52:53Speaker 1: he's not active about being like, that's not me. I'm
- 1:52:56Speaker 1: not I'm not positive if he even knows that's what's
- 1:53:00Speaker 1: really going on. So he might not give a whole
- 1:53:02Speaker 1: big he might not give a big ship about all this.
- 1:53:04Speaker 1: And here's another thing this when when this happened, most
- 1:53:09Speaker 1: bear attacks like this, especially like this one, are reported
- 1:53:12Speaker 1: on somewhere in detail. You know, they're not all national news.
- 1:53:16Speaker 1: They're not. I mean, it's we kind of you. You've
- 1:53:18Speaker 1: within twenty four hours, you usually, and so if you
- 1:53:22Speaker 1: hang out with the right sorts of folks, you're like, oh,
- 1:53:24Speaker 1: someone got scratched. You know, someone got scratched yesterday in
- 1:53:27Speaker 1: Wyalming or whatever. And so that's what you know. All
- 1:53:29Speaker 1: this stuff has kind of come back to me where
- 1:53:31Speaker 1: a guy got attacked by a guy was riding his
- 1:53:33Speaker 1: bike up a big guy and got ran into a
- 1:53:35Speaker 1: grizzly bear. Turns out this is earlier this year. Wasn't
- 1:53:39Speaker 1: a woman point it was a guy I heard just
- 1:53:46Speaker 1: around town. About thirteen different versions of that story before
- 1:53:49Speaker 1: I actually read a version that he told gets out,
- 1:53:53Speaker 1: and so that's what happened here. The West Perkins story
- 1:53:58Speaker 1: very like I said, very similar to Bret and Glenn Bond.
- 1:54:01Speaker 1: It was covered, it was written about, it was covered
- 1:54:04Speaker 1: in multiple multiple real actual news sources covered that story.
- 1:54:10Speaker 1: This one didn't get picked up. They made sure it didn't.
- 1:54:13Speaker 1: When Brett Bond called it in, he he didn't even
- 1:54:15Speaker 1: name himself, he said a hunting partner. So if you
- 1:54:17Speaker 1: go back and look, you'll see reports. This report got
- 1:54:21Speaker 1: buried underneath another attack. I believe the teacher was attacked
- 1:54:25Speaker 1: in the same area within a couple of days of
- 1:54:27Speaker 1: Glen's attack, So it gets buried in some of the
- 1:54:30Speaker 1: more national stories. I hit you with a quick bar
- 1:54:33Speaker 1: check yeah coverage story. My brother is going up a
- 1:54:36Speaker 1: river in Alaska, my hunting moose, and they stop and
- 1:54:39Speaker 1: talk to your dude for a while, and they're dragging
- 1:54:42Speaker 1: their canoes up a river and they bullshit with the
- 1:54:44Speaker 1: guy for a while. They go about their business. They
- 1:54:45Speaker 1: go out on the river and hunt moose. They get
- 1:54:48Speaker 1: home and everybody saw about a guy that got mauled
- 1:54:51Speaker 1: on the river. They're hunting you. It's interesting, And when
- 1:54:54Speaker 1: they finally see the picture, it's the guy that they
- 1:54:57Speaker 1: just talked to you who got mauled the day they
- 1:54:58Speaker 1: talked to him. After obviously they shot the ship with
- 1:55:01Speaker 1: him go up the river, he gets mauled, and then
- 1:55:04Speaker 1: like ten days later they come home and hear about
- 1:55:06Speaker 1: a guy who got mauled. Look, it was like the
- 1:55:07Speaker 1: dude they had been rapping with. I hope you I
- 1:55:09Speaker 1: was hoping you were gonna say he got mall and
- 1:55:11Speaker 1: forgot to mention it before it was after it like
- 1:55:13Speaker 1: butterfly effect. Though at it's like, had we not taking
- 1:55:16Speaker 1: up so much of his time? This dude stumbled on
- 1:55:21Speaker 1: a gut pile of another moose hunter that had been
- 1:55:24Speaker 1: claimed by a bear, and to bear scratched him up.
- 1:55:26Speaker 1: Maybe I can't remember the dude lived or died, but
- 1:55:29Speaker 1: he got scratched up pretty good. Anyhow, word gets out.
- 1:55:32Speaker 1: That's I mean, there's so much that goes into this,
- 1:55:33Speaker 1: and like if you try to really draw some conclusions
- 1:55:36Speaker 1: from it, there's so many of them, but one of
- 1:55:38Speaker 1: them is give me one. Well, one of them is
- 1:55:40Speaker 1: the way that we treat this, the way that we
- 1:55:42Speaker 1: talk about bear attacks, the way that we want to
- 1:55:44Speaker 1: cover them. Why are we so drawn to Barras These
- 1:55:47Speaker 1: are sensational, These are life and death sensational stories that
- 1:55:52Speaker 1: we're drawn to. And that and because we're drawn to
- 1:55:55Speaker 1: him in the way that we are, we tend to
- 1:55:56Speaker 1: embellish them, or we tend to a guy told me.
- 1:56:00Speaker 1: And so that's one element of this I think. Also
- 1:56:03Speaker 1: I hit you with the one. I think that there's
- 1:56:05Speaker 1: something to be said for knowing that there is still
- 1:56:09Speaker 1: like real danger from wild animals out there, and that
- 1:56:13Speaker 1: we harbor a little bit of nostalgia for that ship. Absolutely,
- 1:56:17Speaker 1: there's that quote about you know, fighting against the wilderness
- 1:56:20Speaker 1: until we could become civilized, and then once you're civilized,
- 1:56:24Speaker 1: fight against civilization. Yeah, and you can hearn for the wilderness.
- 1:56:28Speaker 1: I talked to a neuroscientist on my show recently. God
- 1:56:32Speaker 1: works the Mount Sinai, and he did some studies on
- 1:56:36Speaker 1: the predator's brain. They studied mice and they there's a
- 1:56:39Speaker 1: in the central migdala there's like a pocket of neurons
- 1:56:42Speaker 1: that they can they can mess with. Don't ask me
- 1:56:44Speaker 1: to really get technical, and they can mess with turn
- 1:56:47Speaker 1: it up or turn it down and see what happens
- 1:56:48Speaker 1: to mice and their predatory instincts, and he was telling me,
- 1:56:51Speaker 1: he's like, based on psychology and based on our brain works,
- 1:56:54Speaker 1: we have this there's a duality of respect we have
- 1:56:56Speaker 1: for predators, and you can see this in our own
- 1:56:59Speaker 1: culture where we we both want to be them and
- 1:57:02Speaker 1: their efficiency for killing because that's part of what how
- 1:57:05Speaker 1: we got to be where we are, and we also
- 1:57:08Speaker 1: respect their beauty and their place in the ecosystem. So
- 1:57:11Speaker 1: we have this like dual respect for them that kind
- 1:57:13Speaker 1: of leads to maybe at some level what we see
- 1:57:16Speaker 1: in our culture where protectionism and the hate and the
- 1:57:21Speaker 1: vitification of predators that's happened through the decades past turn
- 1:57:25Speaker 1: of the century and even before that. And so that's
- 1:57:29Speaker 1: something that after this whole Brett Bond thing that I've
- 1:57:32Speaker 1: been looking at hard. We've talked to hilarious guyst We
- 1:57:34Speaker 1: talked to this guy ivand Rajo, who's a who's that
- 1:57:37Speaker 1: neuroscientist and just trying to figure out what is this
- 1:57:40Speaker 1: thing and why do we have these opinions about predators
- 1:57:46Speaker 1: and somewhere deep down and there's why we're so drawn
- 1:57:48Speaker 1: to this stuff and why we turn it around and
- 1:57:50Speaker 1: make it something it's not remind uh tell folks who
- 1:57:55Speaker 1: of the people you just talked to you that they
- 1:57:57Speaker 1: can go and hear the story straight from the old Uh,
- 1:58:00Speaker 1: straight from the I don't want to say horses mouth,
- 1:58:02Speaker 1: straight from the mouth. Straight from the mouth, well, I
- 1:58:04Speaker 1: mean from your from from from hunting collect from the
- 1:58:07Speaker 1: hunt collective, right, so I can pull it up and
- 1:58:09Speaker 1: give you numbers, but you can hear Brett Bond tell
- 1:58:11Speaker 1: his story. I think it's one six episode. We then
- 1:58:19Speaker 1: talked to that neuroscientists and episode eight just talked to
- 1:58:23Speaker 1: Dr Geist last week and actually had asked they asked
- 1:58:26Speaker 1: the eagle debut THHC. We brought it kind of resuscitated
- 1:58:32Speaker 1: a little bit for Yannie. What you ask him? What
- 1:58:35Speaker 1: did you asked him? Does he think the picture is true? Yeah?
- 1:58:39Speaker 1: We should. Yeah, I like it, but yeah, I mean
- 1:58:41Speaker 1: there's a lot of stuff in there. We also went
- 1:58:43Speaker 1: to um also went to Yellowstone to bring it all back.
- 1:58:47Speaker 1: Spencer and and went out with the predator biologist Dr
- 1:58:51Speaker 1: Dan Steyler and tracked a mountain lion. Talked to him
- 1:58:54Speaker 1: about his you know, he spends his entire life studying
- 1:58:57Speaker 1: these predators, wolves, grizzlies, talk to him about that, talk
- 1:59:01Speaker 1: to him about what he thinks they're placing the landscape.
- 1:59:03Speaker 1: Are why we believe, why we kind of ascribe these
- 1:59:07Speaker 1: you know, personalities to them, why we have this immense
- 1:59:11Speaker 1: respect for them on one side and then this immense
- 1:59:13Speaker 1: hatred on the other. So all that is kind of
- 1:59:16Speaker 1: wrapped up in or was inspired in some way by
- 1:59:18Speaker 1: this Brett Bond story. We were picking huckleberries on Saturday,
- 1:59:21Speaker 1: took our kids up with huckleberry We were we weren't
- 1:59:27Speaker 1: going to the zone of death. Okay, did you go
- 1:59:28Speaker 1: to my spot? But my goodness, did we get a
- 1:59:32Speaker 1: lot of them. I heard a good year for him
- 1:59:34Speaker 1: in saying, man, we got we picked twin berries, we
- 1:59:39Speaker 1: picked thimbleberries, we picked huckleberries, we picked um dwarf whortleberry,
- 1:59:47Speaker 1: we picked we'll missing gooseberry and in current which are
- 1:59:52Speaker 1: hard to tell part anyhow, shipload of huckleberries. But I, um,
- 2:00:01Speaker 1: I couldn't not mention the bear situation to my kids,
- 2:00:05Speaker 1: so I said, but I wanted to spin it right,
- 2:00:08Speaker 1: So I said, if you're lucky enough to encounter a bear.
- 2:00:13Speaker 1: That's how I opened it up, like, well, what if it?
- 2:00:17Speaker 1: And then I was like we'll cross that bridge when
- 2:00:18Speaker 1: it when we get to it, and just no one
- 2:00:21Speaker 1: that I now mentioned it. At least let's go pick
- 2:00:26Speaker 1: if negligent not to at least bring up the fact
- 2:00:28Speaker 1: that you might be lucky enough to encounter one. I
- 2:00:31Speaker 1: probably won't happen, but you could get so engrossed in
- 2:00:36Speaker 1: staring at a little tiny berries rustling through the brush
- 2:00:40Speaker 1: on your own, making little squeals of joy. Yeah, my
- 2:00:46Speaker 1: son was that the orange bear spray canister. It's like
- 2:00:49Speaker 1: it's a thing that I'm not happy that he's so
- 2:00:51Speaker 1: curious about. But Yeah, that's the funny thing about kids
- 2:00:55Speaker 1: embarrass spray is like I'm like, there's the like sort
- 2:00:58Speaker 1: of remote chance of needing to spray a bear with
- 2:01:01Speaker 1: this bear spray. There's the very real chance of my
- 2:01:04Speaker 1: kids spraying each other with this. Yeah, because it's this
- 2:01:08Speaker 1: orange cand that kid is begging to be shot at
- 2:01:13Speaker 1: your your sibling. It looks like that string stuff that
- 2:01:17Speaker 1: that they screw it out, what it looks like. They're like, dude,
- 2:01:22Speaker 1: if I could only squirt that at my sister. Yeah,
- 2:01:27Speaker 1: I put him in that little pack and we pack
- 2:01:28Speaker 1: around and track charuk hands or whatever, and it's I
- 2:01:31Speaker 1: got the bear spray on my hip. He's always like
- 2:01:34Speaker 1: I feel like I feel that little hand going down
- 2:01:37Speaker 1: ald that thing. All right, man, good stuff? Yeah, yeah,
- 2:01:44Speaker 1: what's going on onst You know the feeling you described,
- 2:01:48Speaker 1: like why we're interested in bear a tax and like
- 2:01:50Speaker 1: how it's just like the amount of danger is exciting
- 2:01:52Speaker 1: right when I was talking, when I was talking to
- 2:01:54Speaker 1: Brian called the person who found this legal loophole in
- 2:01:57Speaker 1: his oone of death. I was trying to verbalize that
- 2:01:59Speaker 1: to him, and I was telling him, you know, from
- 2:02:01Speaker 1: where we're sitting were five miles from that zone of death.
- 2:02:04Speaker 1: I was telling it's like kind of liberating knowing that exists.
- 2:02:08Speaker 1: It's like strangely exciting knowing that's just like I don't
- 2:02:14Speaker 1: know mountain away, right, you just lure someone over there? Yeah,
- 2:02:17Speaker 1: And I was telling I was telling him that, and
- 2:02:20Speaker 1: he did not feel the same way. His last words
- 2:02:22Speaker 1: to me is that he said, I just stay the
- 2:02:25Speaker 1: hell away. M hm m hm, stay the hell away,
