- 0:00Welcome back to Reformed Thinking.
- 0:01We're doing another deep dive, and today we're really shifting
- 0:04our focus. We are, instead of looking at
- 0:06the mind as this, you know, purely abstract thing, we're
- 0:09going to ground our study in something much more, well,
- 0:13physical. The body.
- 0:14That's right, our listener sent in a fantastic set of sources on
- 0:17a field called Embodied Cognition, or EC for short.
- 0:22And this material, it really pushes back on that old idea
- 0:25that thinking just happens between your ears, completely
- 0:27separate from everything else. It does.
- 0:29And so our mission here is really twofold.
- 0:31First, we need to get into the science of EC.
- 0:33What are its claims? What's the evidence?
- 0:35OK. But then, and this is the core
- 0:37of it for us, we have to test these scientific findings
- 0:40against biblical anthropology. We need to see how they stack up
- 0:44against a Reformed theological framework.
- 0:46So is this connection between the mind and body just some kind
- 0:50of evolutionary accident? Or is it a feature of
- 0:53intelligent design, a common GRACE observation that science
- 0:56is now catching up to? It really starts with things you
- 0:59already intuitively get. I mean, why does walking around
- 1:03a room help you solve a problem you're stuck on?
- 1:06Exactly. Or why do you start using your
- 1:08hands to explain something complicated, maybe sketching it
- 1:11out right? The sources we're looking at
- 1:13argue that those physical things you do, they aren't just little
- 1:17helpers for your thoughts. They're saying the actions are
- 1:20part of the thinking itself. That's the challenging claim we
- 1:23need to unpack. So let's start with the
- 1:25scientific backdrop. EC is reacting against
- 1:28something. For a long time there was this
- 1:31one powerful picture of how the mind works.
- 1:33Oh yeah, the brain is computer model.
- 1:36It was, and in some ways still is, incredibly influential.
- 1:39And what was the basic idea behind that classical view?
- 1:42It was very neat and tidy. You can think of it like a
- 1:44production line. First, you have input the body's
- 1:46senses perception bring in data from the world.
- 1:49OK, that's step one. Then that data gets sent to a
- 1:52central processor. The brain and this processor
- 1:55works by shuffling around abstract symbols like software
- 1:59running code. And these symbols are a modal,
- 2:02right? They don't have any connection
- 2:03to the sensory input they came from.
- 2:05They're just pure information. Exactly.
- 2:07Purely abstract. And only after all that internal
- 2:10calculation is done, the processor sends a command, an
- 2:13output and the body executes. It so in that model the body is
- 2:18basically just a keyboard and a monitor.
- 2:20A monitor. Perfect analogy.
- 2:21It handles the input and the output.
- 2:23But the real work, the thinking, happens in this sealed off
- 2:27central unit, totally divorced from the physical machine.
- 2:30But that model, as tidy as it is, it started showing some
- 2:33cracks. The sources point out some
- 2:35puzzles it just couldn't solve. It really did, and the biggest 1
- 2:38is probably speed. Real world skillful action.
- 2:42Think of a shortstop fielding a ground ball, or a jazz musician
- 2:46improvising. Those actions are just too fast,
- 2:49too fluid to be explained by some slow step by step internal
- 2:52calculation. If your brain had to run a full
- 2:54physics simulation before your body moved, you'd be hopelessly
- 2:58behind reality. You'd miss the ball every time.
- 3:00Every single time. And then there's the second
- 3:02puzzle, the simple fact that our physical state effects how we
- 3:05think. Right.
- 3:06If the mind is just software, why does it matter if the
- 3:09hardware is tired? That's the question.
- 3:12Why does being exhausted make it harder to reason?
- 3:16Why does stress mess with your memory?
- 3:20The classical model kind of treats the processor as if it's
- 3:23immune to things like blood sugar or hormones.
- 3:26But it's not. It's a physical organ.
- 3:28It's a physical organ in a physical body, and the third
- 3:31puzzle is what the source is called the offloading problem.
- 3:34Offloading. We are constantly using the
- 3:36world around us to help us think.
- 3:38We make lists, We draw diagrams. We use our fingers to count.
- 3:42We gesture. We offload the mental work onto
- 3:45the environment. Yes, why would we do that if our
- 3:48brains were these all powerful internal computers?
- 3:51It's like we instinctively know our internal memory is limited,
- 3:54so we share the computational burden with the world.
- 3:57And these puzzles taken together are what really opened the door
- 4:00for embodied cognition. OK.
- 4:01So that brings us to EC itself. You said it's a broad term, so
- 4:04we need to break down the different claims.
- 4:06We do. It's a spectrum, really.
- 4:08The basic question is just how the body matters.
- 4:11We can break it down into three main ideas, from the most
- 4:14accepted to the most radical. Let's start with the mildest
- 4:18one, the influence thesis. The influence thesis is pretty
- 4:21straightforward. It just says that bodily states
- 4:23reliably affect our thinking. They modulate.
- 4:26It so the body doesn't do the thinking, but it changes the
- 4:29conditions under which the thinking happens.
- 4:32Perfect. If you have a rush of
- 4:33adrenaline, your attention narrows.
- 4:36If you adopt A slumped, defeated posture, it can actually change
- 4:40how confidently you argue a point.
- 4:42The body's Physiology sets the stage for the brain's
- 4:45operations. That one seems pretty hard to
- 4:47argue with. The brain is part of the
- 4:49Organism, after all, it. Is it's the weakest claim, but
- 4:53it's an important first step away from the old model.
- 4:55So what's the next step up? The grounding thesis?
- 4:58This sounds like it gets closer to the core of the problem.
- 5:00It does. The grounding thesis is a much
- 5:02bigger claim. Is the body actually contributes
- 5:06to the content or the format of our thoughts?
- 5:08What does that mean? The format of our thoughts.
- 5:10It means our concepts, especially for concrete things
- 5:13like push or heavy or near, aren't just abstract computer
- 5:18code. They are anchored or grounded in
- 5:21our sensory and motor systems. So when I think about grasping
- 5:25an idea. Your brain isn't just
- 5:26manipulating 2 abstract symbols for grasped an idea, it's
- 5:30actually activating some of the same neural patterns you use
- 5:34when you physically grasp an object like a cup.
- 5:37OK, so the abstract meaning is built on the physical
- 5:40experience. Exactly.
- 5:41Abstraction is still possible, but it's built out of these
- 5:44bodily resources. We use spatial metaphors and
- 5:47motor programs as building blocks for higher thought.
- 5:51The body gives our concepts their structure.
- 5:53OK, that's a big step. But now for the really
- 5:55controversial one, the Constitution thesis.
- 5:58This is the one that really breaks down the boundary between
- 6:00mind and body. The Constitution thesis says
- 6:02that in some cases, the body's actions are not just influencing
- 6:06or grounding thought, they are an ingredient in the cognitive
- 6:09process itself. The body is part of the
- 6:11thinking. It's partly realized by bodily
- 6:13action. The sources talk about epistemic
- 6:16actions. These are things you do with
- 6:19your body to make thinking easier to solve a problem that
- 6:22would be too hard to do just in your head.
- 6:24And you give a classic example of this.
- 6:26The go to example is mental rotation.
- 6:29Imagine you're playing Tetris or maybe assembling some IKEA
- 6:32furniture. You have a piece and you need to
- 6:35see if it fits OK. You could try to mentally rotate
- 6:38the image of that piece in your head.
- 6:40That takes a lot of working memory.
- 6:42It's difficult, very. Or you could just physically
- 6:45pick up the piece and turn it with your hands.
- 6:47Right, which is what everyone does.
- 6:48Exactly. And the constitution thesis says
- 6:52that physical act of rotating the object is a cognitive
- 6:55operation. You're not thinking and then
- 6:57moving. The moving is part of how you
- 6:59think. You're using the world to
- 7:01compute the answer. It's an ingredient, not just a
- 7:04result. That's the.
- 7:05Claim and it's controversial because it means the mind isn't
- 7:09just in the skull. Which is a perfect lead in to
- 7:11the Fourier family. These terms get used almost
- 7:14interchangeably sometimes, so we need to separate them out.
- 7:17Embodied, embedded and active and extended.
- 7:21This is so important, especially when we get to the theology so
- 7:24embodied is what we've been talking about.
- 7:26The focus is on how the bodies own Sensorio motor capacities
- 7:30and internal regulation shaped thought.
- 7:32OK. And embedded.
- 7:33Embedded cognition says that thinking is always situated.
- 7:37It's adapted to a specific environment.
- 7:40Knowing how to navigate a city is embedded in the city's
- 7:43layout, but the key difference is the city itself isn't
- 7:46literally part of your mind. Context is critical, but the
- 7:49mind stays in the body. Got it.
- 7:52What about inactive? The inactive view is it a bit
- 7:55bolder. It says we don't just passively
- 7:57receive information for the world, we actively construct our
- 8:00experience through action. Perception and action are
- 8:03inseparable. You don't see the world and then
- 8:06decide how to act. Seeing is a form of acting.
- 8:09You see the world in terms of what you can do in it.
- 8:11Yes, that's a great way to put it.
- 8:13Cognition is about skillfully managing that continuous loop
- 8:15between Asian and world. And finally, the most radical of
- 8:18the bunch, Extended cognition. This is the one that really
- 8:22pushes the boundaries. The extended thesis claims that
- 8:25external things, a notebook, a diagram, your smartphone can
- 8:29literally become components of your cognitive system.
- 8:32So my phone could be part of my memory.
- 8:34If you reliably use it to store information, and you access that
- 8:38information as seamlessly as you would your own biological memory
- 8:42to complete a task, then yes, functionally that device has
- 8:46become part of your memory system.
- 8:48The mind actually extends beyond the skin.
- 8:50And you said this distinction is vital for a reformed analysis.
- 8:53Why? Because of where we draw the
- 8:55line for human identity, for what is subject to sin and
- 8:58redemption. OK if we say our body is an
- 9:00ingredient in our thinking. The Constitution thesis that
- 9:04lines up beautifully with a biblical view of psychosomatic
- 9:06unity. But if we say the mind extends
- 9:09into a non biological artifact like a smartphone.
- 9:12Does that mean your phone is part of the self that fell?
- 9:14Is your phone subject to SIN? Does it get redeemed?
- 9:17You see the problem? Scripture is very clear that the
- 9:21soma, the biological body, is the vessel created by God that
- 9:25is subject to the fall and awaits resurrection.
- 9:29Extending the mind beyond that biological unit risks diluting
- 9:34the unique created nature of the human person.
- 9:37So we can accept that our thinking is embodied and
- 9:39grounded without having to agree that our minds are literally
- 9:44spilling out into our technology.
- 9:46That's the boundary. The architecture is designed for
- 9:48coordination with the world, but the soul is tethered to the
- 9:52biological person, God formed from the dust all.
- 9:54Right, so let's dig into the science a bit more.
- 9:56These ideas didn't just appear out of nowhere.
- 9:58What are the historical roots here?
- 10:00You can trace them back quite a way really, as a reaction
- 10:03against that rigid computational view from the mid 20th century.
- 10:06Where do we start? In America, you had the
- 10:08pragmatists like William James and John Dewey.
- 10:11For them, knowledge wasn't about having a perfect picture of the
- 10:13world in your head, it was about being able to act successfully.
- 10:17To know something was to know how to use it.
- 10:20Thinking was tied to doing. And in Europe you had a
- 10:23different stream of thought doing similar work, yes.
- 10:25The phenomenologists Murillo Ponte is the key figure here.
- 10:28He was fighting against Cartesian dualism, that idea of
- 10:31a mind completely separate from the body.
- 10:33His argument was that we're always already in the world,
- 10:36right? Exactly.
- 10:37Our perception is shaped by our body.
- 10:39The world appears to us as a field of possible actions.
- 10:43Our posture, our physical abilities, they all structure
- 10:46how we see and understand the environment.
- 10:48And then you have the developmental psychologist.
- 10:50Right Piagia. He showed how an infant's
- 10:53understanding of the world is built up through sensorimotor
- 10:56activity, region grasping, moving.
- 10:59As the baby's motor skills develop, their conceptual world
- 11:02expands in lockstep. And Vygotsky with his idea of
- 11:06scaffolding. Yes, Vygotsky stressed how much
- 11:09we rely on external supports, language, gestures, cultural
- 11:13tools to build up our internal mental functions.
- 11:16But the biggest scientific push came from ecological psychology.
- 11:19James Gibson. Gibson was a game changer.
- 11:22He basically said the whole computational model was asking
- 11:24the wrong question. The mind doesn't need to build a
- 11:28complex internal model of the world from scratch.
- 11:30Why not? Because the environment itself
- 11:32is already full of rich information, and perception is
- 11:35the active process of just picking up that information.
- 11:37This is where he introduces the idea of affordances.
- 11:40That's a central concept. An affordance is an opportunity
- 11:43for action the environment offers to an Organism.
- 11:47A chair affords sitting for a human, a wall of Ford's climbing
- 11:53for an insect. So perception isn't neutral.
- 11:56When I look at a cup, I'm not just seeing a cylinder, I'm
- 11:59seeing its grasp ability for my hand.
- 12:01You see what you can do with it. Perception is tuned to action,
- 12:04and that makes cognition look a lot less like symbol crunching
- 12:07and a lot more like skilled coordination with the world.
- 12:10So let's get into the specific mechanisms that make this work.
- 12:13There are five key ones in the sources.
- 12:15The 1st is perception action coupling.
- 12:17This is the bedrock. Cognition isn't a straight line
- 12:20input process output, it's a continuous high speed feedback
- 12:24loop. How does that loop work?
- 12:26You make a move, that movement changes what you sense, that new
- 12:32sensory information guide your next move, and on and on it goes
- 12:36in real time. And the intelligence is in the
- 12:39loop itself. It is.
- 12:40It's in the constant coordination and adjustment.
- 12:43Think about driving a car on an icy Rd.
- 12:46You're not solving equations, You're in a tight dynamic loop,
- 12:49making tiny adjustments with the wheel based on the feedback
- 12:52you're feeling from the tires. The intelligence is distributed
- 12:56across you and the car and the road.
- 12:58OK, that makes sense. The second mechanism is sensori
- 13:01motor simulation. Right.
- 13:03This explains how we can think about things even when we're not
- 13:05moving. The idea is that when you think
- 13:08about an action, you recruit some of the same neural
- 13:11machinery you'd use to actually perform that action.
- 13:14So if I think about kicking a ball, my motor cortex lights up
- 13:17a little. Bit it does, even if you're
- 13:18sitting perfectly still, the brain runs a kind of low level
- 13:21simulation of the physical experience.
- 13:23This is what gives our concepts their feel.
- 13:25Which really supports that grounding thesis we talked
- 13:28about. It's the mechanism behind it.
- 13:30It's why our abstract language is filled with physical
- 13:33metaphors, like a heavy topic or a sharp critique.
- 13:37We're using these Sensor My Motor simulations to structure
- 13:40abstract ideas. Right mechanism 3 is epistemic
- 13:43action. We touched on this already.
- 13:45This is when you use your body to make thinking easier.
- 13:49The actions main purpose isn't to change the world, but to
- 13:52change your own cognitive state. Like spreading out all the
- 13:55puzzle pieces on a table. Perfect example.
- 13:58You're using the table as an external memory space.
- 14:01It helps you see patterns and relationships that would be
- 14:04impossible to hold in your head all at once.
- 14:06You're outsourcing the cognitive load.
- 14:08And sketching an idea on a napkin during a meeting would be
- 14:10another 1A. Classic 1.
- 14:12You take a fleeting internal idea and make it stable and
- 14:16public so you and the other person can both work on it.
- 14:19It's a hugely powerful strategy for complex problems.
- 14:22OK, mechanism 4 gets internal interception and effective
- 14:26modulation. This is a reminder that
- 14:29cognition is regulated by our internal bodily state.
- 14:33Interoception is just the technical term for sensing
- 14:35what's going on inside your body, your heart rate, your gut
- 14:38feelings, fatigue. And those internal signals shape
- 14:41our emotions, our effective state.
- 14:43Yes, and emotion isn't some messy distraction from pure
- 14:46reason. It's a vital control system.
- 14:49It tells us what's important. How does that work?
- 14:51Well, if you feel a lot of anxiety in your stomach, that's
- 14:54an interceptive signal. Your brain immediately
- 14:57reallocates its resources. Your attention narrows to
- 15:00potential threats. Your decisions become more risk
- 15:03averse. That gut feeling is your body
- 15:05biasing what your mind pays attention to and.
- 15:07The final one, number 5, is morphological computation.
- 15:11This one is fascinating. It's the idea that the body's
- 15:13physical structure, its shape, its weight, the way it's joints
- 15:17work, actually perform some of the computation for us.
- 15:20The body's design simplifies the control problem for the brain.
- 15:24It does. Think about how our tendons
- 15:26store and release energy when we run.
- 15:29That elastic property simplifies the work our muscles have to do.
- 15:34The brain doesn't have to calculate and control every
- 15:36single detail of the motion, because the body's physical form
- 15:40is already doing part of the work.
- 15:42The structure itself is smart. In a way, yes.
- 15:45It reduces the number of things the nervous system has to
- 15:48actively manage, making complex actions possible.
- 15:51OK, those five mechanisms give a really solid picture.
- 15:56Let's run through some of the evidence now, starting with
- 15:58language. We already mentioned the
- 16:00metaphors, but there's brain imaging evidence too.
- 16:02When people read sentences about actions.
- 16:04He hammered the nail. The motor parts of their brain
- 16:07associated with hammering show activity.
- 16:09Gesture. Gesture is huge.
- 16:11People don't just wave their hands around randomly.
- 16:13Their gestures often trace the structure of the idea they're
- 16:16trying to explain. It suggests the thought itself
- 16:18has a spatial motor like structure that they're
- 16:21externalizing. What about evidence from
- 16:24reasoning and working memory? Here you see that experts in
- 16:27complex fields like engineering or surgery rely heavily on
- 16:31practice physical actions. They point, they manipulate
- 16:34models, they sketch. They use the physical world to
- 16:37hold intermediate steps of a problem steady so their internal
- 16:41working memory can focus on the bigger picture.
- 16:43If you take away their ability to do that, their performance
- 16:46plummets. Drastically.
- 16:48Which confirms that this externalization isn't just a
- 16:51helpful add on, it's a core part of their reasoning process.
- 16:54And in development, we see this process from the very beginning.
- 16:58Absolutely. An infant's world of concepts
- 17:01changes as its motor abilities change.
- 17:04When a baby learns to crawl, its understanding of space and
- 17:07distance fundamentally reorganizes.
- 17:10Doing comes first, and it shapes knowing.
- 17:13The body is the minds first teacher.
- 17:15Finally, what about tools and scaffolding?
- 17:17This is about how we integrate objects into our cognitive
- 17:20system. When a musician becomes an
- 17:22expert, their instrument becomes transparent.
- 17:24Their attention isn't other fingers, it's on the music
- 17:26they're creating through the instrument.
- 17:28The tool becomes part of them functionally.
- 17:30It becomes integrated into that perception action loop, and the
- 17:34same goes for things like lists and maps.
- 17:36They act as external memory and workspaces, allowing us to
- 17:39perform cognitive feats like planning a cross country trip
- 17:43that would be completely impossible with our internal
- 17:45memory alone. So the scientific picture is
- 17:47pretty clear. The brain is essential, but it
- 17:49doesn't work in isolation. Thinking is an activity that
- 17:52involves the whole body and its environment.
- 17:55OK, we've laid out the science. We see how the body matters.
- 17:59Now we get to the really critical part for our deep dive.
- 18:02Why does it matter this way? Let's put this into a
- 18:04theological framework. This is the hinge.
- 18:06You're right. The first step is to affirm that
- 18:08what science is observing here is a facet of common grace.
- 18:12The creator designed it this way.
- 18:14The hand was designed to teach the mind.
- 18:16Exactly. These are valid observations,
- 18:18but we have to immediately filter the secular
- 18:21interpretations that often come with these findings.
- 18:23The big one being evolutionary materialism.
- 18:26It is. If you start from the assumption
- 18:28that there's no creator, then the human body is just a happy
- 18:31accident of survival. It's cognitive design is only
- 18:35for fitness, for passing on genes.
- 18:37And in that view, an affordance is just an opportunity to
- 18:40survive, not to fill a purpose. Right.
- 18:43It removes any sense of higher purpose or moral significance.
- 18:47But in a created framework, the body's design is for a purpose,
- 18:51to exercise dominion, to commune with God.
- 18:55This preserves the dignity and meaning behind our embodied
- 18:58nature. And this brings us to the two
- 19:00ancient errors that the biblical view of the person corrects.
- 19:03Yes, and they keep popping up in new disguises.
- 19:06The first is materialist mournism, the idea that you are
- 19:09only your physical body with no soul.
- 19:11And the second is the opposite error, Gnostic dualism.
- 19:14Right. The Gnostic view that the body
- 19:16is a prison, a piece of junk, that the real you, the Spirit,
- 19:19wants to escape. The Christian worldview rejects
- 19:22both of these and affirms what we call psychosomatic unity.
- 19:25A soul body hole. Let's ground this in Genesis
- 19:272.7. That's the foundational text.
- 19:30God forms the man from the afar in the dust of the ground, so
- 19:33the physical body is an essential part from the very
- 19:36start. Not an afterthought.
- 19:37Not at all. Then he breathes into him the
- 19:40nishma chayim, the breath of life, and the result is a
- 19:44nephesh haya, a living soul or a living being.
- 19:48The Hebrew mindset is clear. You don't have a body.
- 19:52You are a body animated by God's breath.
- 19:54Which is a perfect theological foundation for embodied
- 19:57cognition. It is, and you see this unity
- 20:00all through the Old Testament's vocabulary for the inner life.
- 20:02Right, they use physical organs to describe mental processes.
- 20:05They do the LEB. The heart wasn't just the seat
- 20:08of emotion like we think of it. It was the center of intellect,
- 20:11will, decision making, the whole inner person.
- 20:15That's so different from the Greek idea of reason in the head
- 20:18and passion in the chest. Completely different, and it
- 20:21goes even deeper. The killia, the kidneys or
- 20:23loins, were seen as the seat of deep conscience and emotion.
- 20:27The psalmist says his kidneys instruct him in the night.
- 20:29So the biblical authors would not have been surprised at all
- 20:32by the idea that gut feelings influence our decisions.
- 20:34Not the slightest for them. Wisdom and thinking we're always
- 20:38understood as deeply embodied, physically felt processes.
- 20:42OK. So let's apply this to our
- 20:43systematic framework. Creation.
- 20:46Fall. Redemption.
- 20:48What did this psychosomatic unity look like at creation?
- 20:52In the beginning, Adam had perfect psychosomatic harmony.
- 20:55His physical senses gave him a pure, undistorted knowledge of
- 20:58God and creation, and the covenant of works itself was an
- 21:01embodied command. Right, it required a physical
- 21:03act of restraint. Don't eat from the tree.
- 21:05Exactly. The integration of his mind and
- 21:07his hands was a feature of his intelligent design for ruling
- 21:11righteously. But then the fall shatters that
- 21:13harmony. How does total depravity affect
- 21:15the system? The fall corrupts everything,
- 21:17all parts and faculties of soul and body.
- 21:20Sin didn't just infect the mind, it fundamentally disordered the
- 21:24relationship between the mind and the body.
- 21:26The hierarchy gets flipped upside down.
- 21:27It does. Reason, which was meant to rule,
- 21:31now becomes a slave to the body's appetites.
- 21:33And this is where Paul's distinction between soma, the
- 21:36body, and sarx, the flesh, is so critical.
- 21:39The soma is the physical body itself, which is neutral created
- 21:42good. Yes, the body is for the Lord,
- 21:45but the Sark's is the principle of rebellion, the sin nature
- 21:49that has hijacked the body. Paul says in Romans 7 that sin
- 21:52is at war in his mellows his physical members.
- 21:55It's almost muscular. Sin gets embedded in our
- 21:58physical habits and cravings. The fallen mind, the fronematae
- 22:02sarcos, is a mindset on the flesh.
- 22:05Cognition gets twisted to serve and rationalize what the body
- 22:09wants. Embodied cognition, which was a
- 22:11gift, becomes a liability under the curse.
- 22:13So this beautiful system of coordination is now geared
- 22:16towards rebellion until Christ intervenes.
- 22:18And the incarnation is the ultimate statement on the
- 22:20goodness of embodiment. The Son of God took on a human
- 22:24nature, a physical body, but without sin.
- 22:26He validates the physical. He validates it, and he lives
- 22:29out of perfect embodied obedience.
- 22:31Hebrew says he learned obedience to what he suffered physically.
- 22:34Hunger, thirst, the agony of the cross.
- 22:37He subjected his physical experience to his father's will,
- 22:40perfectly reversing Adam's embodied failure.
- 22:43And our final hope is not to a spake the body, but to have it
- 22:46redeemed. That's the key.
- 22:47The hope is the resurrection. Christ rose with a physical,
- 22:51glorified body, and Paul says we eagerly await the redemption of
- 22:55our bodies. We're not waiting to become
- 22:57ghosts. We're waiting for the day when
- 22:59our minds and bodies are in perfect, sinless sync again.
- 23:02OK, this is where it gets incredibly practical.
- 23:05If our minds and bodies are disconnected, then
- 23:07sanctification, our growth and holiness can't just be an
- 23:10intellectual exercise. It can't.
- 23:11It has to involve training the body.
- 23:13Romans 12.1 present your bodies as a living sacrifice.
- 23:17That's a physical command. So we apply the third use of the
- 23:20law, which guides believers in how to live.
- 23:23And that guidance involves physical habituation.
- 23:26If thinking and doing are linked, then obeying means
- 23:29training our physical habits. Physical actions are often the
- 23:32very means the spirit uses to shape the affections of our
- 23:35soul. So physical discipline isn't
- 23:36just a result of holiness, it can be a tool to achieve it.
- 23:40It often is. Look at Paul in First
- 23:42Corinthians 9. He says hypopiazo, I beat my
- 23:44body like a boxer. He recognizes that physical
- 23:47laziness or uncontrolled appetites can make the spiritual
- 23:50mind dull. So we train the body.
- 23:53We train it. We physically get up and walk
- 23:55away from temptation. We intentionally sit up straight
- 23:58to pay attention. We kneel in prayer to fight at
- 24:01our own pride. These are physical acts that
- 24:03retrain our mental and spiritual states.
- 24:05Let's talk about the means of grace then.
- 24:07Preaching, for a start. It's a very physical event.
- 24:10It is God chose a profoundly embodied means.
- 24:13Faith comes by hearing. It requires sound waves created
- 24:17by a human voice to travel through the air and strike a
- 24:19physical eardrum. It requires you to physically
- 24:22sit, attend, and submit your senses to the authority of the
- 24:26Word. God uses our biology to deliver
- 24:28spiritual truth. And the sacraments go even
- 24:30further, engaging the whole person.
- 24:32They do. They're a defense against a
- 24:34hyper intellectual faith. They are, as Kelvin said,
- 24:37visible words in the Lord's Supper.
- 24:39The physical sensations, the taste, the texture, the act of
- 24:43eating and drinking engage our embodied cognition to seal the
- 24:47promise to our hearts in a way that just thinking about it
- 24:49can't. You taste and see that the Lord
- 24:51is good. Literally.
- 24:53This idea of habit formation of liturgy seems so relevant today
- 24:56with our digital habits. It's a direct battle of
- 24:59liturgies. Yeah, the sources would call the
- 25:01constant phone scrolling A cultural liturgy.
- 25:04It's a repeated physical habit that trains your mind for
- 25:06distraction, fragmentation and instant gratification.
- 25:10It trains the sarks. So the physical structure of a
- 25:13worship service is a counter formation.
- 25:15It's a counter liturgy, physically standing to sing,
- 25:18bowing for confession, sitting under the preached word.
- 25:22These are rhythms that train the body in reverence, humility, and
- 25:26attention. That bodily training helps
- 25:28sustain the mind's faith during the week.
- 25:30OK, let's bring this all together with the Head, Heart,
- 25:32Hands application. What does this mean for our
- 25:35head? For what we believe?
- 25:36For the head, this doctrine is a direct confrontation to the
- 25:40modern Gnostic idol of self creation.
- 25:42The idea that the real me is just a feeling inside and my
- 25:45physical body is irrelevant or even an obstacle.
- 25:48Exactly. This doctrine forces us to
- 25:50believe that our bodies, their specific gender limits and form,
- 25:54are a good gift and a divine appointment.
- 25:57They ground us in reality and prevent our minds from spinning
- 26:00off into the fantasy that we can be whoever we want to be.
- 26:03It's a call to accept the reality of our creativeness.
- 26:06It is OK for the heart, what we love.
- 26:09This addresses our affections. Here we have to confront the
- 26:13idol of comfort, that deep seated desire to keep the body
- 26:16undisturbed and satisfied at all times.
- 26:19Sins of the flesh, like gluttony and sloth, are physical acts
- 26:23that train the heart to love comfort more than Christ.
- 26:27They deaden our spiritual senses.
- 26:29And the antidote is somatic reverence.
- 26:31Deliberate physical acts of worship.
- 26:33Kneeling in prayer forces a physical posture of submission
- 26:37on a proud heart. Lifting your voice and song
- 26:40physically engages your body in the act of praise.
- 26:43These physical actions can help warm a cold heart.
- 26:45Finally, the hands. What we do?
- 26:47This demands physical presence. It's a strong argument against
- 26:51the idea of a purely virtual church being the norm.
- 26:54The ecclesia is a physical gathering of bodies.
- 26:56You can't want another a screen. You really can't.
- 26:58Bearing one another's burdens often means physically showing
- 27:01up. Serving the church means
- 27:02physical effort, cleaning up, sitting with someone who's
- 27:05grieving. This doctrine gives profound
- 27:07meaning to that simple physical work.
- 27:09And the most direct application of all this is fasting.
- 27:12Fasting is the ultimate practice of embodied sanctification.
- 27:16You are intentionally denying the body's most basic demand for
- 27:19food to physically enact a greater spiritual hunger for
- 27:24God. It breaks the loop.
- 27:26It breaks the mastery of the belly.
- 27:28It's a way of training your physical members to serve
- 27:30righteousness, not appetite. You are physically demonstrating
- 27:34to your own body and mind that you do not live by bread alone.
- 27:38It's working out your obedience in your own muscles and sinews.
- 27:41This has been an incredible deep dive.
- 27:44We've seen how the science of embodied cognition, when you
- 27:47look at it through a reformed lens, confirms that we're not
- 27:50ghosts in a machine. And we're not biological
- 27:52accidents either. We are psychosomatic unities
- 27:54designed for this incredible coordination between mind, body
- 27:57and world. And that design is something to
- 28:00be redeemed and sanctified. The resurrection of Christ gives
- 28:03our bodies an incredible dignity.
- 28:04The Gospel calls us out of a life where sin uses our bodies
- 28:08for rebellion. And into a life where we
- 28:10actively present those same bodies as living sacrifices, as
- 28:13our spiritual act of worship. So as we close, and as we wait
- 28:18for that day when our bodies of humiliation will be made like
- 28:21Christ's glorious body, here's a final thought for you to
- 28:24consider. How often do you treat your
- 28:26physical life, your posture as you listen to this, your daily
- 28:30habits, where you go, what you look at as if it's spiritually
- 28:33neutral? When in fact, the ground of your
- 28:35physical existence is the very training ground God is using to
- 28:39shape what you think, what you love, and what you do.
- 28:42Every physical habit is a spiritual discipline.
- 28:44It's either training your body to serve the Lord or allowing
- 28:47the flesh to rule. Our bodies are not our own.
- 28:50We are to glorify God in our body and in our spirit, which
- 28:53are Gods.
