- 0:12Sometimes the greatest obstacle to God's plan for your life
- 0:16is not the world around you, but the hesitation
- 0:20within you. Most of us imagine that the people God used most
- 0:25were fearless. We picture them stepping confidently into His
- 0:29will, never doubting, never questioning,
- 0:31never struggling. But when you pull back the curtain,
- 0:35you often discover something very different.
- 0:38Before Moses faced Pharaoh, he argued with God.
- 0:42Before Jeremiah preached to a nation, he protested
- 0:46that he was only a child. And before George Whitefield ever
- 0:50stood before crowds of thousands. Before he became the
- 0:54most influential evangelist of the Great Awakening, before his
- 0:57voice echoed across England and colonial America,
- 1:01he was simply a young man terrified that God was asking
- 1:05too much of him. Welcome to Traveler's Tales,
- 1:08produced by Enjoying the Journey. I'm your host,
- 1:12Greg Dowdy. Throughout history, God has written
- 1:15incredible stories through very ordinary people who simply chose
- 1:19to trust Him. Today, we travel back to 18th-century
- 1:23England to meet one of the greatest preachers the world has ever known,
- 1:27not at the height of his ministry, but at the moment he wrestled
- 1:31with the call of God. George Whitefield was born on December
- 1:3616th, 1714, in Gloucester, England, the son of an innkeeper.
- 1:41While attending Oxford University, he joined a small group of earnest
- 1:45young believers that included John and Charles Wesley. It was there,
- 1:49March of 1735, that he experienced genuine
- 1:53conversion through faith in Jesus Christ. Not long afterward,
- 1:57Whitefield sensed God calling him into the ministry. But unlike the
- 2:02bold preacher we often imagine, Whitefield didn't immediately embrace
- 2:06that calling. He resisted it. He feared it. He,
- 2:09he felt completely unworthy. Listen to his own words:
- 2:13I never prayed more earnestly against anything than I did against
- 2:18entering into the service of the church so soon. I have often
- 2:21been in an agony of prayer, Lord, send me not
- 2:25into the vineyard yet. Can you hear the honesty in his words?
- 2:29This wasn't laziness. It wasn't rebellion.
- 2:33It was the overwhelming realization that the work of God was far
- 2:37greater than his own ability. He knew that
- 2:41preaching Christ was no ordinary task. He understood the
- 2:44weight of eternity resting upon every sermon. Like Moses,
- 2:49Whitefield looked at himself and saw only weakness.
- 2:52Have you ever felt that way? Perhaps God
- 2:56has impressed something upon your heart. Maybe he's calling you
- 3:00to teach a Sunday school class, to witness to a co-worker,
- 3:03to serve in ministry. To reconcile a broken relationship,
- 3:07or just simply to take a step of obedience that you've been putting off.
- 3:12And every time the opportunity comes, the same thoughts rise up:
- 3:16I'm not ready. Someone else could do it better. Lord,
- 3:20not yet. You're in good company.
- 3:24Whitefield discovered what every servant of God eventually learns—
- 3:28that God is not looking for people who feel sufficient.
- 3:32He is looking for people willing to trust His sufficiency.
- 3:37Despite all of Whitefield's prayers to avoid the ministry, God's will
- 3:41prevailed. Friends encouraged him, and God continued
- 3:45to work in his heart, and finally he surrendered.
- 3:49That surrender changed not only his life, but it
- 3:52changed history. After his ordination,
- 3:56Whitefield began preaching with unusual power.
- 3:59Church buildings could no longer contain the crowds, so he took the
- 4:03gospel outdoors. Fields became sanctuaries,
- 4:07marketplaces became pulpits, hillsides became auditoriums.
- 4:12Some criticized him for preaching in the open air, but he kept preaching.
- 4:17Others mocked, but he kept preaching. Many rejected
- 4:21him, he kept preaching.
- 4:24And over the course of his ministry George Whitefield preached an estimated
- 4:2818,000 sermons. He often spoke 40
- 4:32hours each week. He crossed the Atlantic Ocean 7
- 4:36different times when such voyages were dangerous and exhausting.
- 4:40In Scotland, one gathering is estimated to have exceeded 100,000
- 4:44listeners, all without microphones or amplifiers.
- 4:48God used him as one of the central voices of what
- 4:51became known as the Great Awakening. Bringing thousands to
- 4:55faith in Christ across England and America.
- 4:59Yet perhaps the greatest victory in Whitefield's life didn't happen before
- 5:03a crowd. It happened in private.
- 5:06It happened the moment that he finally said yes to
- 5:10God's will. Late in life,
- 5:13Whitefield reflected on the work God had done in his own heart,
- 5:17and he wrote this: One taste of Christ's love
- 5:20in the heart will make amends for all. What a beautiful testimony.
- 5:25He had learned that surrender always costs something,
- 5:29but it never costs more than Christ is able to
- 5:33repay. In fact, the deeper God humbles us, the more fully he
- 5:37prepares us to be used for his glory.
- 5:40Friend, perhaps the Lord is doing that very work in your life
- 5:44today. Maybe your wilderness feels longer
- 5:48than you expected. Maybe your fears seem stronger than your
- 5:51faith. Maybe you're waiting for confidence before you obey.
- 5:56But confidence has never been God's requirement.
- 5:59Faith has. Philippians 2:13 reminds us,
- 6:03for it is God which worketh in you both to will
- 6:06and to do of his good pleasure. Now think on
- 6:10that carefully. God doesn't merely give you something to do.
- 6:14He works in you to will and to do his good
- 6:17pleasure. The God who calls you is also the God who equips
- 6:22you. The God who leads you is the God who strengthens you. And the God
- 6:25who sends you never abandons you.
- 6:29George Whitefield's favorite verses were John 3 and John 3:7:
- 6:34You must be born again. That was the heartbeat of his ministry.
- 6:38More than crowds, more than reputation, more than influence,
- 6:42he wanted people to know Christ. And even on his
- 6:45final journey to America, though physically exhausted,
- 6:49he continued preaching until the very end.
- 6:52After delivering one last message from the balcony of a church
- 6:56parsonage in Newburyport, Massachusetts, he went to bed and
- 7:00entered the presence of the Savior he had spent a lifetime proclaiming.
- 7:04His race was finished. His faith had become sight.
- 7:09And the Lord Jesus, just as Whitefield often said, had indeed gotten
- 7:14himself the victory. Perhaps that's the
- 7:17lesson we should carry with us today. God rarely chooses
- 7:21the people who think they are ready. He delights in using
- 7:25those who know they are not but trust him anyway.
- 7:30So whatever God is asking of you today,
- 7:33don't allow fear to have the final word. Lay your plans
- 7:37before him. Trust his wisdom. Above your own.
- 7:41Take the next step of obedience.
- 7:44Because the God who called George Whitefield is the same
- 7:48God who still calls His people today. And He has never
- 7:51failed a single one who trusted Him.
- 7:55Thank you for joining me today for Traveler's Tales. I want you to
