- 0:56Thank you. Now here are the hosts of the
- 1:00United We Scan podcast. Welcome back, everybody.
- 1:05Episode 58. We got a few announcements and a
- 1:09mixed bag of stuff going on tonight.
- 1:12We have a guest with us tonight, The Toasty.
- 1:16Toasty. Will be joining.
- 1:18Us. Hi.
- 1:21And I'll go ahead and let you lead off a little introduction,
- 1:24if you will. I'm a regular carrier in South
- 1:29Central Texas area. I've been with the post office
- 1:32since 2016. I'm five years regular now and
- 1:37as of pay period two of this year and I'm looking forward to
- 1:42adding some input to the podcast here.
- 1:46Thank you, James. How was your week?
- 1:53It was a lot of fun, you know. We had the winter weather come
- 1:59through here, of course, and luckily I do not drive a
- 2:02mattress or I'd have been stuck in a lot of places that I didn't
- 2:05get with my LLV. That was one of the few carriers
- 2:10that did not get stuck much. I got stuck Friday though.
- 2:14I was having a great day and then got stuck and had to wait
- 2:17two hours. Got O time for it though, so I'm
- 2:20happy about that. But yeah, waiting to get unstuck
- 2:24for two hours really sucks. No, I'm gonna say wow.
- 2:31Do you mean you're glad you weren't in a mattress up in New
- 2:34York? That too.
- 2:37But we have a mattress in our office and they can't go down
- 2:41any road that has ice on it because they won't put snow
- 2:43tires on it. And they won't, you know, take
- 2:46care of get us a vehicle that can actually make it through the
- 2:49snow like that. You know, I know that front
- 2:52wheel drive mattress fans are actually better in the snow than
- 2:55the rear wheel drive that that they gave us, but I digress.
- 3:00I did get stuck because another carrier got spun out in front of
- 3:04me and blocked the road. That was funny.
- 3:07I turned down the corner and here's a mail truck sitting
- 3:09sideways on the road, nose nose up against the ditch, tail
- 3:13sticking out over the lane. So I couldn't fit by and tried
- 3:17to push it with mine. But it was a no go because it
- 3:19was too slippery. Finally somebody came with a
- 3:22four Wheeler drive and yanked the back end of it around so I
- 3:24could get through and just taking it easy, nice and
- 3:30careful. And then I delivered my route
- 3:33every single day this entire week while other people were
- 3:36bringing stuff back. So I was really proud of that.
- 3:38May have taken me a little longer, but that's OK and not
- 3:43really much else happened. I didn't get an update on my
- 3:46grievance even though my ADR had a conversation with management
- 3:49over it. They haven't given me an update
- 3:51on it, but that's pretty much been my week.
- 3:55How about you, Josh? My week was not too bad, but the
- 4:01reference I made about with New York was apparently up in New
- 4:04York, a Metro fan caught fire. Supposedly the battery that's
- 4:09under the driver's seat ignited or exploded somehow.
- 4:16That being said, we also had a mattress in my station that the
- 4:23mechanic was there in the morning working on the brakes.
- 4:27The carrier took off to start delivering call back.
- 4:32Talk to the station manager. I don't know what exactly was
- 4:36said, how it was translated, but that was smoking from the one
- 4:40tie from the right front tire. He told her to come back.
- 4:44She came back and there's smoke flying everywhere and by the
- 4:48time I rode outside with my Gurney to start loading my
- 4:52vehicle the rotor around by the rotor is in flames.
- 4:57Luckily someone grabbed a fire extinguisher and was able and
- 5:01got it out before there was any damage.
- 5:05So, so except for fire extinguisher dust all over it,
- 5:08the fire looked fine. Bill, how was your week?
- 5:16Uneventful. Surprisingly, we're short of
- 5:19clerks, so the supervisors are throwing packages on the belt
- 5:23for the sorting machine we have in our office.
- 5:26I questioned the supervisor once on Monday in regards to all my
- 5:30forwards coming back. Gave them to them all.
- 5:33I'll take care of them Tuesday. They all came back and gave them
- 5:36back to the same supervisor. I don't understand.
- 5:39I don't. OK, Wednesday they came back
- 5:41again. I gave them to a different
- 5:43supervisor. They oh, I don't know what's
- 5:45going on. Thursday was fine and then
- 5:48Friday I got at least 4 inches of of return mail that all had
- 5:54FWD in there. I guess that meant front wheel
- 5:57drive because they didn't get forwarded.
- 6:00And I I, I directly addressed this with the postmaster.
- 6:05And the postmaster says to me, oh, they're doing something up
- 6:08at the plant. And I said, that's fine.
- 6:13How did it end up my clerk mail? Well, no, it couldn't, couldn't
- 6:18happen. I said, I'm sorry.
- 6:20I pulled it out of the hot case. How could it not be clerk mail?
- 6:24And she goes, you must be mistaken.
- 6:26I looked at her. I said that's the second time
- 6:28you called me a liar and I walked away from her because it
- 6:32is the second time. The third time I'll be getting
- 6:35an EP because I'll fly off on this person.
- 6:39They are the most incompetent, lazy management crew I've seen
- 6:45in 26 years. It's it's frustrating to the
- 6:49point of, you know, what can I say, you know.
- 6:53Well, I can't say what I want to say.
- 6:56Surprisingly, though, Amazon's been like this, you know, whole
- 6:59week as far as the parcel is concerned.
- 7:02The Spurs are still running, you know, 10 to 14 trays a day, but
- 7:05the parcels have really been, you know, in in the 40 and less
- 7:10range every day of the week. So I guess everybody's run out
- 7:14of money for Christmas or they order used up all their gift
- 7:17cards already because it when when I get one hamper, that's a
- 7:22light day for me. I hear you I my Amazon's been
- 7:26fairly late this week too. And you know it's funny what
- 7:29you're saying about getting the mail and through your clerk mail
- 7:32with with the forward sticker on them that just says forward.
- 7:35I'm assuming you're talking about flats, correct?
- 7:37The. Letters.
- 7:38The letters. Oh letters, letters, letters.
- 7:40I now I was getting my flats back and and my helicopter flats
- 7:46and my route sorted flats in front of the case that comes or
- 7:50the tub that comes to my case. I had a couple days this week
- 7:53and I was like wait a minute I thought these in for forwarding
- 7:55and they had the little forwarding barcode on all the
- 7:58flats. I was like, I've got those two
- 8:01or three times this past week like that too, so.
- 8:05I did get a bundle like that where I had eight flats and and
- 8:09they were All in all Polly's and all were written on their
- 8:12forward UTFRTS on each one not you know the the top one or
- 8:17anything like on each one And they all came back and I just, I
- 8:21just shake my head as I hope we get this during the mini mail
- 8:23survey. Right.
- 8:26Oh, yeah. I've many times I've had stuff
- 8:29that I've tossed back into that throwback or into the three M
- 8:33and it comes right back to me within a couple days.
- 8:36Like it never even got processed the way it was supposed to at
- 8:39the plant. Or it never left the office.
- 8:44That too. No, actually, I've had stuff
- 8:46coming back in my DPS, so I know it left the office if it was in
- 8:49the DPS. That's what gets me but.
- 8:54Admire you. A plant can do no wrong.
- 8:58No, never. I just have the Metroplex out of
- 9:00Detroit. Shout out to the Metroplex.
- 9:02Yeah. Yeah, you.
- 9:03I'm talking about you. Anyways, I my week wasn't too
- 9:07bad. I had another shadow day on
- 9:10Wednesday. I am trying not to be overly
- 9:13optimistic about this person, but I think I found a keeper.
- 9:22We'll see. He goes to Academy this week,
- 9:24but he was already connecting out on the route, The stuff that
- 9:28I was explaining to him in the office at the case and he was
- 9:33verbally talking. Oh yeah, this was what you were
- 9:35talking about. You know, It was already
- 9:37connecting it. On his Shadow day.
- 9:40We did talk a lot. We had some good laughs.
- 9:43I forgot a couple packages to deliver because we were talking
- 9:46and had some good laughs. So I'm like, and this is what we
- 9:49do when we forget a package or we miss one and went and had to
- 9:53go take care of those before we headed to the next part of the
- 9:56route. But other than that, yeah, it
- 10:00was Thursday was a super late. You didn't forget them, you did
- 10:03it for a training for a moment. Well, I didn't mark my packages
- 10:07either, so yeah, I forgot them. And and remember the golden
- 10:13rule. If you forget it, it's the sub's
- 10:15fault or trainees fault. If, if, if if they forget it,
- 10:20it's going to be blamed on the regular.
- 10:22He actually did. Apollo, I am so sorry to you
- 10:25that I got you preoccupied, you know, distracted.
- 10:28I'm like, Oh, no, no, it's all right.
- 10:30Yeah, It was thick fog out that day too.
- 10:32So I was actually trying to pay attention and see if there was
- 10:35actually cars coming that didn't have headlights on and thick
- 10:37fog. So because people are stupid
- 10:39like that. But so yes, people out there, if
- 10:43you're listening and you're driving and thick fog, please
- 10:45put your headlights on. Thank you.
- 10:50The people who are driving close to Sunset and they think they
- 10:54can see it well enough without their headlights, doesn't mean
- 10:57other people can see you exactly turn it.
- 11:00Damn lights on, you know. And then I and then come
- 11:06Thursday morning, I wrote up that the LLV that we had for
- 11:10Wednesday because the LLV assigned to the Ox ropes one
- 11:14with the jump seat in it. And so you know we just trade
- 11:17with the OX carrier that day when we need it.
- 11:20I had to write it up for transmission issues and I handed
- 11:25it to the postmaster specifically on Thursday morning
- 11:30and I then told her that yes, it was very very slow all day.
- 11:36And so when I got to the end of the route and turned back on to
- 11:40US 23 to drive a couple miles back to the office, I put the
- 11:44pedal to the floor and it still was barely at 35 miles an hour
- 11:51within 1/4 to 1/2 mile down the road.
- 11:57Yeah, yeah. So I said, yeah, I need that
- 12:00truck fixed because we actually have two more shadow days in my
- 12:04office coming up this week, Tuesday and Wednesday.
- 12:06Two more routes. And being the the OJT in the
- 12:10office, I better get mine trained because I'm going to be
- 12:14busy. You know, with a wrench you can
- 12:17just take it out of one truck and put it in another.
- 12:21Yeah, yeah. That no, our office wouldn't do
- 12:25that. They would send it to our
- 12:27contracted garage and have them do that and actually pay
- 12:31whatever they charge to do it. But they won't do that.
- 12:34They won't take it out of the one truck and move it around so.
- 12:39I'm just saying on. There I I'm very well aware it
- 12:42can be moved from truck to truck to truck.
- 12:44That's, you know, but it's. Our one supervisor does it just
- 12:49because it's even though the VMF is the one that's supposed to be
- 12:52doing it, because it's just easier for him to get in there
- 12:57with his wrench and pull it out, move it over to the other truck,
- 13:00and then put it back in. Yeah.
- 13:02No, they won't do it so. Actually, half the time they sit
- 13:07somewhere in the back of the office, not even in a truck.
- 13:10And our offices do that, but ours does not.
- 13:14Just saying. That and watch out the last time
- 13:19I had a truck that had transmission this use, so I've
- 13:22never saw it again. Yeah, yeah.
- 13:29We'll see. What happens my truck that got
- 13:30towed in back in August? You never got it back.
- 13:37No, they reassigned it to the other office.
- 13:41All right, so I'm going to start off.
- 13:43We received a voice message on our Spotify, just questioning
- 13:50some things that we talked about on the last episode.
- 13:53So I'm going to play that real quick here.
- 13:54Let me pull it up again and then I will let and then we will go
- 13:59ahead and just kind of discuss what they were talking about or
- 14:05questioning again. And that way they'll they'll
- 14:08know when they're listening this week.
- 14:09So let me go ahead and play this.
- 14:12When you're saying do the scams. On the very Last Post that you
- 14:18did and the field around the post office what?
- 14:25Exactly, are you? Scanning because I don't think
- 14:30I've ever scanned anything outside the post office other
- 14:35than out on my route. And what are you talking about?
- 14:40The red marker in marking out the bar codes on the mail?
- 14:46I don't get it. I don't understand.
- 14:50With that, what with the scanning outside of the Geo
- 14:55fence which is the perimeter of the parking lot and the
- 14:59building, if you have a package, let's say for example it's a no
- 15:05access for whatever reason or no one's home or you missed a
- 15:11package, you off the end. Of day.
- 15:17Even though you scanned it, it didn't clear off the end of day
- 15:20when you get back to the office. You for integrity purposes
- 15:26you're not supposed in the afternoon and I may vary from
- 15:30location to location. I know we were told 3:00 PM.
- 15:34Anything 3:00 PM and later cannot be scanned inside the
- 15:39post office. So when you come back in the
- 15:41afternoon you should not have any packages or barcodes that
- 15:50have not been scammed prior to you coming back in.
- 15:54What I was talking about with the red marker is what they what
- 16:00they called dead mail, stale mail, old mail, anything that
- 16:05was should have been delivered prior to the the day if I bring
- 16:14it back or if it's closed business on Saturday.
- 16:18What they wanted us to do is put a with the marker, put a line
- 16:22through the barcode. So if I get an SVM on Monday for
- 16:29an address, I'm not scanning that letter.
- 16:33And what they actually did this Saturday yesterday is they gave
- 16:37us a print out that says this is old stale mail, do not scan it
- 16:42for an SVM. So any business, you know, any
- 16:47mail that was residual from Saturday, I'm supposed to bundle
- 16:54it in that paper, that sheet of paper, and then put all the rest
- 16:58of the mail for that address. And then if I get an SVM, I'm
- 17:02only scanning the mail that's not within that, you know that I
- 17:05don't have cup in that paper. Hopefully that clears that up.
- 17:10I don't know. Do any of you guys have anything
- 17:12you wanted to add in that in this regard?
- 17:14Well I was just going to clear on it's the the thing that the
- 17:18directive that's come down to many places on the scanning
- 17:23barcode parcels after 3:00 PM in the office.
- 17:27So like I was saying for something doesn't clear on the
- 17:30end of day even though you may have had to manually enter it in
- 17:33out of the route or you did scan it.
- 17:35But for some reason it never fell off the end of day because
- 17:38you know we all know what happens from time to time and
- 17:43they you can't enter that in at the office they want you to go
- 17:46off site. It's that Geo fencing around the
- 17:48office that you need to go outside of in order to clear
- 17:51that parcel off of the end of day.
- 17:56And then and then with the SPM scans, it's just his office
- 18:01wanted them to mark off the barcode for something that was.
- 18:05So you're only scanning the current day's mail that comes in
- 18:09under that SPM and not anything that was either brought back or
- 18:13was on hold or a business closed from previous days?
- 18:18Right. And I just wanted to clarify,
- 18:21you'd said manually. And what Chris is talking about
- 18:26is in the regular scan screen, you type in the number, you're
- 18:31not going back to the main screen and going down to
- 18:34manually input. No one should ever, no one
- 18:38should ever use that because with that you have to put a date
- 18:44and time, and with that they can say you're falsifying those.
- 18:49Scans, some of the insight on this, why they're doing this is
- 18:58not because of carriers. Let's make that clear.
- 19:02The integrity scans that they're talking about is not because of
- 19:07carriers. This came about because they
- 19:10were managers that were turning around and inputting scans on
- 19:15carrier deliveries that were missed or were not delivered and
- 19:21scanning them as customer hold or no access, things like that
- 19:27and basically falsifying scans. Management mostly was the ones
- 19:32doing that. Granted, there were some
- 19:34carriers that probably were, we do not know for sure, but 99% of
- 19:39it was management falsifying information.
- 19:43So it came down from district that it's no longer going to
- 19:46happen inside the offices and management turned around and put
- 19:50it on the carriers as the onus of who has to deal with it.
- 19:55So unfortunately, they may turn around and say, well, you're
- 19:59going to have to go back out and knock on the door if you didn't
- 20:01scan it, things like that. Better make sure they're paying
- 20:04you for doing that as well. And and understand that geofence
- 20:10is an invisible boundary, creating a perimeter of your
- 20:15post office that Gans will show up as being basically falsified.
- 20:21And that's why they want you to drive like a quarter mile, half
- 20:24mile away from the building and all that.
- 20:26Unfortunately in my office they have somebody that turns around
- 20:29and says them, you know, if you want that scanned, here you go,
- 20:32here's my keys. You go do it.
- 20:34I'm not, you know, I'm not falsifying the information,
- 20:37period. Whenever you do have a situation
- 20:41where you have a package that you inadvertently missed
- 20:45specifically, like a spur that fell out of a a tray into the
- 20:48wheel well on the opposite side of the truck, your best bet is
- 20:54to scan No access. Because then you're not required
- 20:58to leave a 3849 Ford either. Which is one of the corrections
- 21:02they finally made on that. Because when they first came up
- 21:05with this system, if you put no access, they actually wanted you
- 21:10to fill out a 3849. And if I didn't have access,
- 21:14where am I going to put the 3849 folks?
- 21:17Or you know, hopefully, you know, like many of us, I always
- 21:19double check my truck before heading back to the route or
- 21:22heading back to the office and if I miss something, I try to
- 21:25deliver that before I get back to the office.
- 21:27So but yeah, it's or if you were or if you're in my office and
- 21:32you miss it and management will send you back out to to deliver
- 21:36it. So it you know.
- 21:39But basically. Yes, it is.
- 21:43Yep, sure is. I like to use the load truck
- 21:47feature and then use the package look ahead to see what I
- 21:49actually had of them, what I actually don't have.
- 21:52That helps it you're presuming that that actually works.
- 21:55Yeah, if it's working that day. If it's not, then yeah, I'll
- 21:59usually if it my last stop I'll double check all my tubs, make
- 22:02sure I didn't have anything left behind and then if I have
- 22:05something that I miss, I'll put it as no, no access to but.
- 22:08Yeah, I'm just not gonna waste my time with the load truck
- 22:10feature. Yeah, I I don't either.
- 22:16The load truck feature is nice if you have a label that's
- 22:22screwed up and you can't read where it goes.
- 22:27Or UPS flaps one of their stickers over where the address
- 22:33is so you and then when you kill it, you can't.
- 22:37The Load truck gives you not only the sequence, you know what
- 22:42section 123456, but what the sequence number is and the
- 22:46physical address that it goes to.
- 22:49Yep, so the only times I use load truck is in that situation.
- 22:55Or when I have that big large heavy box in the back and I
- 23:00can't see the label. I forget exactly where it goes,
- 23:04but I can't see where the label is from the driver's seat.
- 23:08I can go to load truck, reach back and scan it from the
- 23:15driver's seat and see, OK, I know this is on the my next
- 23:20block or this isn't until my next neighborhood.
- 23:26Just as a remind to me, instead of having to get dismount and go
- 23:31to the back and turn it around, look at the label again and then
- 23:37rearrange everything and start going again.
- 23:42Because I know I've missed them a couple of times.
- 23:44Not seeing, you know, not thinking to look at the big huge
- 23:48heavy box, but looking at all the other parcels I have and
- 23:53then handing up having to loop around at the end of the route
- 23:57for the big heavy one I haven't had to.
- 24:00Freaking nature like me and not use a load truck and very rarely
- 24:04look at your package look ahead except for maybe at the end of
- 24:06the route. To make sure I don't look.
- 24:08Clear and not mark a single. Thing we you and I have talked
- 24:13about the sport. I miss them when I mark them.
- 24:16What makes you think I'm going to get it right without marking
- 24:19them? Right.
- 24:20Right, that's except. For except for on my shadow
- 24:22days. And we're talking and laughing
- 24:24and and and having a good time. And then, yeah, I tend to.
- 24:28My brain ain't functioning quite right then, but yeah.
- 24:31I oh, I only. I only mark my curbside delivery
- 24:35now because everything else is CBU, so I kind of sort them as I
- 24:41get to the locations. Yeah, I gotcha.
- 24:44My first neighborhood is only 70 addresses and at two by two by
- 24:50three grid. So when I first pull it, we are
- 24:54long waiting for the truck to warm up enough and and go
- 24:57through at least one cycle so it doesn't bottom out on me.
- 25:02When I'm trying to drive down the road and feel like it's
- 25:04going to stall, I'll sort them out real quick and line them up
- 25:08in order because I delivered them the the parcels before I
- 25:13get to the CVU to the door. My second one is the condos
- 25:18which we talked about in the past which have 200 units with
- 25:22two teeny tiny parcel Walker. So I have to drive around that
- 25:24whole neighborhood to deliver the parcels.
- 25:27So I just put them in the on the left side on the you know in
- 25:31that step well and then sort them after I deliver the mail at
- 25:37the CBU guess is? Where I I I'm.
- 25:41I'm lucky though, is because I only have two of my condos only
- 25:47are only two dismounts I have for my CB US.
- 25:51The rest of them I can access right from the truck.
- 25:54So it's a little different for me on my end.
- 25:57You know, like every route has its own individuality.
- 25:59So we're going to move on though.
- 26:02Right, Well I only have of almost 1000 addresses.
- 26:06I only have I have less than 300 curbside the rest of the CBU so.
- 26:12Yeah, see. And the mine's different.
- 26:13I have 686 curbside and only 101 CBU boxes so I get that.
- 26:20Right. Well, I've said it in the past.
- 26:22I'm truly on a on a city route. All right.
- 26:27James, you had an announcement. Two of them actually, now, but
- 26:33the very first one I want to announce is at the graciousness
- 26:38of Bill, I'm going to make the attempt to make it to Southwest
- 26:43Area Conference. Yay, in Oklahoma buddies.
- 26:48Yeah. So we're going to be there.
- 26:50And if you're going to slack, meet us there and hang out, talk
- 26:55with us. We'll be there to answer
- 26:56questions and chat with you about our candidacy for it.
- 27:01The other announcement I have for that is next week's episode
- 27:07of this podcast will be AQ and A with the candidates running for
- 27:13office. We have a Google form for you to
- 27:17ask questions, so if you want to hear your question asked and
- 27:21answered on this podcast, we're going to try and get as many of
- 27:24them in as we can. Fill out the Google Form and
- 27:29we'll try and get your question answered.
- 27:31Here on the podcast. With each of the candidates will
- 27:34be Bill for President, Kristen for Vice President, and myself
- 27:38for Director of Stewart Operations.
- 27:40So get your questions in and we'll try to answer them all for
- 27:43you. And you can find that Google
- 27:45form on our Facebook page and as well as in our Facebook group.
- 27:51I do believe I had them penned as featured in the group and I
- 27:55know they are on the page. We do have several questions
- 27:59already that have been submitted.
- 28:00So get them in guys, and we'll be happy to address them next
- 28:04week for sure. And and I did respond to the one
- 28:10we saw today that James prompted me on SO.
- 28:14Yes, we do also have on our Discord.
- 28:17On our Discord server we do have a channel just for asking
- 28:22questions to the individuals, so that is also available as well.
- 28:30And please, no more pink thong question.
- 28:34It's true. I won't deny it.
- 28:37All right. So where we going from now,
- 28:40James? I know.
- 28:43I mean the biggest thing that we want to take everybody to take
- 28:46away from this is we have people trying to listen to the craft
- 28:51and make it better for the craft.
- 28:54The biggest thing is, is if you want to ask questions of how
- 28:56we're going to do that, you need to fill out that form so we can
- 28:59announce it live on the next recording that we do.
- 29:02And if you're part of our Discord, you can actually listen
- 29:06to the the recording of the show prior to it being posted on our
- 29:12podcast platforms, on our Discord server.
- 29:14We actually have a live stage with audience members for you
- 29:19guys to listen to us, so. And this is kind of like our
- 29:23own, our own public caucus put so to say.
- 29:27So for those that are unable to go to National Convention or
- 29:30won't be able to be a delegate but still want to get the
- 29:32information and talk to the people that they're voting for
- 29:36as delegates to say, hey, check these people out.
- 29:39You know, they were asked this and this is how they answered.
- 29:42This is kind of like our own public caucus, in a way.
- 29:45This, this all goes back to, you know, the delegates.
- 29:48OK? And you know, I I filled my
- 29:52delegate form out and mailed it in.
- 29:54Everybody who wants to attend the National Convention needs to
- 29:58fill out that delegate form and send it to your appropriate
- 30:02secretary, treasurer, whatever PO Box you're operating out of
- 30:06in that state and, you know, become a registered candidate to
- 30:10be elected as a delegate. And with that, you have to
- 30:15remember you don't have to vote for all 44475022 available
- 30:23delegates. You can only vote for yourself
- 30:26and for those who reflect and you know agree or or or along a
- 30:32line with your views in regards to what direction we need to
- 30:36take this union. In the past 20 years, we've seen
- 30:41how the National Board has just been a musical chair fiasco
- 30:47where we just keep handing it down to the next person in line
- 30:51according to the loyalties of the Gang of Nine.
- 30:54For there's nine positions up there and it hasn't served us
- 30:58well. It hasn't served the craft well.
- 31:01I I still go back to the point where Ronnie Stud stood there
- 31:06and defiantly said we will not implement Rex until we have full
- 31:11transparency. Well, we don't have full
- 31:15transparency. Ronnie Stutz is gone.
- 31:17We have a new President. Transparency is still not
- 31:20available and as late as late yesterday we still had people
- 31:26asking what are the reports that they're supposed to have.
- 31:30While management's required to put the radar reports up.
- 31:33You shouldn't have to ask for them.
- 31:35But if you do have to ask for them, get your grievance form
- 31:39out your 8191 and fill it out and file.
- 31:43If it is your local steward, your area steward, your ADR.
- 31:47If you need to go to your Dr. or even your your NRO, then get it
- 31:52filed because you're entitled to that information.
- 31:56With the upcoming mini mail survey and the fact that we
- 32:00still don't have resolution to some of the first survey
- 32:07disputes, we need clarity. We need transparency in regards
- 32:13to where our values are in evaluating our route.
- 32:18You might not call it account anymore, but it's basically
- 32:21account now. We have mini Mail survey as the
- 32:26what do you call it, the non Carpenter in regards to how we
- 32:31are being paid folks. If you're not paying attention,
- 32:36if you're not on the website, if you're not on rule info net or
- 32:41or any of the multiple websites out there for rural carriers and
- 32:46rural carrier associates union and non union, OK, you're not
- 32:51taking advantage of that information that's available to
- 32:53you. You're only hurting yourself and
- 32:57unfortunately down the line you'll be hurting the person
- 33:01behind you who may be taking that route when you bid off of
- 33:04it. So look out for yourselves, look
- 33:07out for the people behind you, Look out for the people next to
- 33:10you. And with that, I I'd have to ask
- 33:14Kristen, I you know, because this is not something that's all
- 33:17going on in the PA Two district. What are they training the new
- 33:22people in regards to the Academy, with regards to recs?
- 33:28Are you training people with Recs?
- 33:32Honestly, that's a good question for the Academy instructors
- 33:34themselves. I know last year they were given
- 33:39the addendum to Rex scanning. They did not have enough copies
- 33:44to give every new person at the time.
- 33:47So it was from my understanding when I last talked to an Academy
- 33:51instructor about the Rex scans and now this has been a while.
- 33:54I will definitely be going back and asking my Academy instructor
- 33:58friends to double check and I will clarify next week what I
- 34:03find out and information wise. But my last time I knew that
- 34:07with the Rex scans it was only a 1520 maybe 30 minute
- 34:13explanation. It wasn't in depth or anything.
- 34:19Now our last new RCA that came into the office I did not train.
- 34:22Our old trainer trained him on his route so but I know even on
- 34:27my shadow day I was kind of going over the scans on my
- 34:31shadow day with my new sub. Unfortunately I won't have him
- 34:36for on the job training for a couple weeks.
- 34:39Like said he will be in Academy this week and then he is
- 34:42actually already. It was a pre planned.
- 34:45We'll be out of town the following week so I will start
- 34:50training him on Saturday the 10th and on Monday.
- 34:55Yes, I will be OJT ING on Monday only because I will be gone on
- 35:01Tuesday and then we'll be picking it back up.
- 35:04He is actually going to be splitting the route with a
- 35:07borrowed RCA that has ran part of my route in the past.
- 35:12On Tuesday he will be doing part of it on his own and then
- 35:16Wednesday I will be back in the truck with him.
- 35:18But no, I was even already kind of going over the scans a little
- 35:22bit when he came in. Again, they don't have them in
- 35:26my office. Come in till half hour after
- 35:28start time, which is really, I think it sucks, honestly,
- 35:33because you can't go over that. This is, you know, grab your
- 35:35scanner, go swear you would grab our keys.
- 35:39This is what we do when we log in and go over that whole thing
- 35:42with them. That really bummed me out.
- 35:44I was actually already done casing flats by the time he got
- 35:46there. So you know, I did try and go
- 35:51over as much as I could with him as we were doing it.
- 35:56So I will definitely be going into more in depth training when
- 36:00he gets in the office again. But as far as Academy, I will
- 36:04double check with my Academy instructor friends and see how
- 36:08much of Academy is actually on the wrecks.
- 36:12And that is also one thing that I want to look at too is, I mean
- 36:17that is a daily importance of the job.
- 36:21I think it needs to be more than just a quick little overview.
- 36:27Well, in the comments Kristen, I owe you one now, said last year
- 36:32they taught nothing except the basic 6 up and until September.
- 36:36OK, the manuals had absolutely zero info about Rex.
- 36:41Gotcha. Yeah, I that's.
- 36:45And then the one thing that I heard was they, I mean a lot of
- 36:47trainer, a lot of a couple of the instructors that I know,
- 36:50we're actually printing out their own materials and taking
- 36:52them in to go over it with them. And and there's.
- 36:56A problem right there because it's management's responsibility
- 37:00and nobody's making management accountable for that.
- 37:03Now, in lieu of that, being rural carriers, we need to step
- 37:08up to make sure that if you're training somebody that you know
- 37:11that we train them on what we know what's available, you know?
- 37:15And if you're like in my office, all you got to do is walk over
- 37:19to me. I have a ton of paperwork piled
- 37:23up at my case in regards to the wreck.
- 37:26And if it goes, if you get that carrier in after two pay
- 37:29periods, comes the year round again.
- 37:32Drum it into their head about the wrecks.
- 37:34Give them, give them another copy.
- 37:35I have that sheet here, have another one.
- 37:38Doesn't hurt to have you know you know.
- 37:40One to read in the bathroom downstairs, one to read
- 37:43upstairs, one to read in your car.
- 37:46If you don't commit it to memory it you won't put it into action.
- 37:51And if you don't put it in action, it doesn't go in your
- 37:54wallet. And this is where I'm really
- 37:57this is going to be interesting for me with this new, with this
- 38:01new RCA in training. I like I said, I'm actually
- 38:04really looking forward to training him.
- 38:05He seems very gung ho on this. He learns he's more of an
- 38:11audible person. I I was asking how he best
- 38:14learns. I even on Shadow day just so I
- 38:17can get a feel for him. He also has a photographic
- 38:20memory. He it was like I said he was
- 38:25connecting stuff right out there.
- 38:26Super intelligent. I really looking forward to this
- 38:30mini mail survey coming up February 24th through March.
- 38:38What guys? 8th 8th March 8th.
- 38:43All right, yes. That first weekend of March,
- 38:47March 1st is. I will be gone for my personal
- 38:52weekend away, my tattoo Expo weekend as I go every year, and
- 38:58then March 8th weekend I will be gone for our state spring
- 39:02booster. I will be pounding in wrecks
- 39:05while I have him because then he is going to be running my route
- 39:09while I'm training the other two new RC as as well and I will be
- 39:14gone. So.
- 39:17I I can't stress enough that everybody that has you know a a
- 39:22a piece of this pie in regards to training.
- 39:25Regardless of how you know. You case your mail, how you do
- 39:28your your sortations for parcel spurs, whether you use load
- 39:32truck or not. Every time you get a trainee on
- 39:36your route, instill in them the importance of the reps and you
- 39:42know make them as as educated as you are so that the route gets
- 39:47true value evaluation. And you know you don't have to
- 39:50sit there and worry about it when you go on your you know
- 39:53tattoo weekends or your state so you know mini's conference,
- 39:58whatever. Doesn't matter, educate them.
- 40:01The only thing you're doing is is protecting yourself.
- 40:06Exactly. And and a more intelligent
- 40:09trainee is a dangerous trainee for management.
- 40:14Yes, and I I'm looking forward to it.
- 40:18He is very gung ho about this job.
- 40:20He I will talk more about him once I start getting him
- 40:24trained. But even just my one day with
- 40:26him on the Shadow, a day I was like we've got to keep her as we
- 40:31all know. We can tell almost from the
- 40:33moment we meet them whether they're going to be if they're
- 40:36going to make it or not. Am I right guys?
- 40:39Yeah. For the most part.
- 40:43For the most part. And once we got once he what in
- 40:48that case and describing after Maddie and Mattakin and and the
- 40:51whole time on the route and afterwards.
- 40:53Oh yeah, I I've got to keep her. And I like I said, I'm trying
- 40:56not to be overly optimistic, but I am thrilled.
- 41:01I'm going to be really curious. Like I said, there's another
- 41:03shadow coming in on Tuesday for Route 4 and one for our 11 on
- 41:06Wednesday. I will see how those two tend to
- 41:12be, but I think if if everybody works out, fingers crossed we
- 41:18will have 1234 really, really good.
- 41:23RCASI did let the kid know. I said, you do realize, I said
- 41:28that you are going to be the one helping these new RC as once
- 41:32they get out on these routes by themselves after I've trained
- 41:35them, said you are going to be the one that's going to be going
- 41:38out there and assisting them and rescuing them.
- 41:42And he just kind of got the big smile on his face.
- 41:45I said, you got to realize it took some of us years to get to
- 41:48that point. It only took you a couple
- 41:49months. And yeah, you should always
- 41:52advise them when they help others.
- 41:54They get a 5% boost in pay and then they look, look at you and
- 42:00you start start laughing at them, you know, no, I'm kidding.
- 42:03No, no, I won't do that to him. I won't do that to him.
- 42:06No. He's a good kid.
- 42:07He is. You won't.
- 42:08You won't even get an attaboy or anything.
- 42:11No, no. He's going on a route that you.
- 42:14Will person will give him the attaboy?
- 42:16He's going to be on a route tomorrow that he's only ran
- 42:18parts of here and there. He did part of it Saturday.
- 42:24He had a bad day. Sarah, I want you to get talking
- 42:26to that discussion, but I haven't worked out with the
- 42:28supervisor because this is the one that I did not train.
- 42:31He and I are going to go. We have been approved to go in
- 42:35early tomorrow morning. Instead of 730, we're going to
- 42:39come in at 7:15. I got a text and remind him and
- 42:44I will be assisting him getting the mail ready to go for that
- 42:47other route that he really hasn't had much experience on.
- 42:51Like I said, he's gone out and helped on it and seems to like
- 42:54it then, but when it comes to casing and whatnot he does not
- 42:56help have a lot of. So.
- 42:58This will also give me a chance to see how much more work and
- 43:01certain aspects that he needs as a newer RCA since I did not
- 43:05train him myself to see OK, where where are these other
- 43:09things that we can work on with you to get you even above where
- 43:13you're at now. So and that way he is will be
- 43:17available to help the other three once they get out on their
- 43:20own. Kind of.
- 43:23I kind of miss my bunk, buddy. James, you still there?
- 43:25Not. Here, but I was letting Kristen
- 43:28talk about training because that's an important part of the
- 43:30vice president's position, is the training and and retention
- 43:34of of carriers. Definitely.
- 43:39I mean and that's what you know, I kind of you know because I I
- 43:43talk about my postmaster once in a while and and you know there's
- 43:47a couple of us, she really just it.
- 43:51It's like she doesn't want fun and people to be happy and enjoy
- 43:54their time at work with each other type thing.
- 43:56It's you know one of those miserable situations and and
- 44:01you've got myself and my work husband and his case mate and
- 44:06then his case mate sub which is the kid and we all get along
- 44:11great. We can all joke and laugh and
- 44:13have a good time when we're all in the office together and my
- 44:16new sub's going to fit perfectly in with that with with with
- 44:22sense of humor. And it it it it it's just it's
- 44:27going to be great. We're going to drive her crazy
- 44:31because you know, Locomotion will come up on the radio and
- 44:33we'll all just get in that Congo line and do locomotion around
- 44:36the office when we're waiting on partials to be thrown.
- 44:42So. Why can't you royal carriers
- 44:44just behave yourself and quit causing trouble for the
- 44:47postmaster? And you have a narcissistic,
- 44:53bipolar postmaster. You got to have fun with her.
- 44:56All right, guys, I'm. I'm off my box now.
- 45:02Well, with what Josh just said, you know the biggest thing that
- 45:06carrier should know is exactly who their designated union
- 45:10representative is. The the stewards should be
- 45:14getting out and going into these offices and meeting these new
- 45:17carriers. They should be getting involved
- 45:20with these carriers, getting up there and personal with them,
- 45:24giving them their business card, especially for area stewards
- 45:28ADRSDRS. The people that are supposed to
- 45:31be the face of this craft, in the face of this union and
- 45:36fighting tooth and nail for every carrier should be out
- 45:40there taking the time to meet the new people and telling them
- 45:44if you have questions, give me a call, things like that.
- 45:47And when they call them, they should be responding to them as
- 45:51efficiently as possible. And then when a carrier files a
- 45:55grievance, they should be fighting for every inch they can
- 45:59give that carrier and not settling for language of
- 46:04language that already exists with terms like will comply,
- 46:08will follow, will adhere to things like that.
- 46:12They should be fighting tooth and nail for these carriers and
- 46:15they should have somebody at the top who's fighting just as hard
- 46:19as they are at the bottom. Because the only way that we can
- 46:24make sure that every single carrier here is educated is to
- 46:28have training that gets them where they need to be and
- 46:33stewards who will back them up. Academy instructors, I have a
- 46:40question for my Academy instructors out there.
- 46:42As you know, I am stepping up to run for Vice President again and
- 46:48I know this kind of came across to me when I ran two years ago
- 46:51as well. When it came to Academy and
- 46:53updating if y'all could reach out, whether that be an e-mail
- 46:58direct message either to myself or the podcast page on what type
- 47:06of things that you would like to see improved in the Academy.
- 47:10The you know what what type of new materials, what type of new
- 47:14program, something that you would like to see that would be
- 47:17instituted in the academies across the board that would help
- 47:21with the training and the retention of these new Rcas.
- 47:31I you know, I'm going to ask on that.
- 47:33I mean, seriously, I want to know.
- 47:38Especially for those of us that are OJIS, we're trying to wonder
- 47:41where these kids are starting at.
- 47:43Do they? How much do they know of the
- 47:45RRECS scans? How much do they know of the job
- 47:48and everything else that goes with the job?
- 47:53And I agree, as you know, as the OJ, you know as the Oji in the
- 47:57office. I completely agree with that.
- 48:00You know, I want to know exactly what they're being taught.
- 48:02Like I said, I'm lucky enough to know who the instructor is for
- 48:05my new RCA next week, but that doesn't mean, you know, I don't
- 48:10know what the curriculum is that they have out there now, you
- 48:14know, and where, where, what. They need to fill in the gaps of
- 48:20the stuff that we do. I mean, I know Academy is
- 48:24probably not anything like it was when I went to Academy 9 1/2
- 48:28years ago. Well, a little over nine years
- 48:30ago. And and that's the first place
- 48:34that we can start educating the new carriers in in regards to
- 48:39the contract rec, you know their rights, the responsibilities and
- 48:44that's an important you know function for the Academy
- 48:46instructors to make sure that these people have access to that
- 48:50information I. Agree, it's one. 100% It's
- 48:54critical. It's critical.
- 48:58It is and especially with Rex and and that's the biggest thing
- 49:02is these Rex scans when you've got management that was, you
- 49:05know, when this first came out and it's only the six scans.
- 49:08And then you know I was lucky enough that I was able to train
- 49:12my carriers or present to my carriers the additional stuff
- 49:17and I still answer questions in my office on the additional
- 49:21scans to carriers when they ask because they may be unsure.
- 49:24It usually has to do with box holders or walking sequence or
- 49:27something of that nature. But you know, I I do I, you
- 49:32know, reminded another carrier mind make sure when you shut
- 49:35your vehicle off is when you hit return to unit because you don't
- 49:39do it when you do it in the office.
- 49:40Only because I was in the office when he came in the one day and
- 49:43I noticed that's when he hit return to DU.
- 49:45And I'm like, no, no, no, no, no, You're cheating yourself out
- 49:48of some time there, dude. Yep.
- 49:51You know before you, before you get out of the truck, before you
- 49:54take the mail to dispatch you, you hit the return to DU.
- 50:00All the time that it takes to unload your vehicle.
- 50:02At the end of the day, all your outgoing mail, All your trays
- 50:06and buckets, all of that is under return to docking unit and
- 50:11before clocking out. And you know for the new RC and
- 50:18and even some of the the established carriers, there is a
- 50:21whole list of end of shift duties on there that you know is
- 50:26available off the website for you to have at your case.
- 50:29So whenever questions or challenge, you can give it to
- 50:33the supervisor, the postmaster, whoever and show them.
- 50:36These are duties that you are required to perform at the end
- 50:40of your regular duties delivering the route.
- 50:45Yeah, you hit that button as soon as you beat the vehicle and
- 50:47park. Yep, and before you add the and
- 50:51you do all that before you do anything for PM casing or
- 50:54clocking out. One thing we're lucky is we the
- 51:00only PM casing. We the only time we use that PM
- 51:03casing in my office is for second trips when needed because
- 51:07everything that comes in that day goes out that day and we
- 51:10don't get an afternoon truck with any drop offs.
- 51:13And I can probably count on one hand how many times we've been
- 51:17allowed to curtail mail in that office in the in the five years
- 51:21I've been there. So, but yeah, it's.
- 51:25Unfortunately in Westchester we have a curtailment based on
- 51:31let's say certain factors. You know, so we we have, you
- 51:36know, people that are allowed to and others that aren't.
- 51:39And the ones that aren't allowed don't file grievances.
- 51:43And I just told them, well, that's on you because you have
- 51:46the right to say this is disparity of treatment.
- 51:50We used to be able to case our Advos the day before, but they
- 51:54stopped that about two years ago after COVID.
- 51:58Yeah, seeing our Advos have, even though they say deliver for
- 52:01the day on Tuesday, they've been coming in on Saturdays.
- 52:04They come in on Saturday, they go out on Saturday.
- 52:08Whether or not we deliver them all is up to us.
- 52:10If we want to split them half CS, I'm sorry, my Advos are
- 52:12coming in Saturday, They're going to go out on Saturday
- 52:15because I do not want to have to deal with them on Monday.
- 52:19However, with a brand new RCA coming in in an ADVO show up on
- 52:24Saturdays as they have been, I will let management know he does
- 52:29not have to take them if he doesn't want to because I don't
- 52:32want to lose him. If he, if you know, take him for
- 52:37a ride and bring him back, I will then do them on Monday.
- 52:40He ain't going to get that free pass for only maybe a couple
- 52:43months. But after that, you know that I,
- 52:47you know I'm not going to have a brand new RCA that's only been
- 52:51out of Academy and in training and only been out for, you know,
- 52:57on his own for a week, maybe two weeks tops.
- 53:01Getting stuck to having to do Advos on Saturday.
- 53:04I don't want to do that to him. I wouldn't now if he's all gung
- 53:08ho and thinks he can do it because mine have been coming
- 53:10address. We had one route yesterday.
- 53:13There's where we had two routes that were not addressed.
- 53:16Yesterday mine were addressed and even my businesses have
- 53:20started to get them before again.
- 53:22And in the past my businesses weren't getting them, it was
- 53:24just residential. So yeah, I'm not going to do
- 53:29that to a brand new RCA now. Do you?
- 53:31When you're not addressed, do you get a separate card?
- 53:34No. Wow.
- 53:37Lucky. The only ones that have gotten
- 53:40separate cards in the past, and it was not even an all the time
- 53:45thing was the City side rural never got the separate cards.
- 53:48Now in my old office, yes we got the separate cards, but in this
- 53:53office, no, we've never gotten the separate cards.
- 53:56And yeah. I think in all my years the red
- 54:02plums came once unaddressed without a card, and then I've
- 54:06had where they were addressed with a card that really sucked.
- 54:13No, with halfsies, if you don't deliver them all because it's
- 54:16putting you behind or you want to bring them up, you only get
- 54:18the the full coverage once. You don't get the scan just two
- 54:21days in a row just once. That's the only downfall to
- 54:24that. But again, you're not delivering
- 54:31them all unless you have another full coverage the next day.
- 54:35Don't get me started on when I was in RCA who borrowed RCA, had
- 54:40a full coverage, only delivered half, came in the next day, had
- 54:44another full coverage on top of the half of full coverage and
- 54:48only delivered finished up. The other one only delivered
- 54:51half. And then I walk in with advos
- 54:54and other half of full coverage the next day to do.
- 54:57Don't get me started on that. So yeah, I I think if you have a
- 55:03full coverage, you do you, you do it that day.
- 55:05I mean, there are instances where if you are too far behind,
- 55:08you need and it's going to be too late putting you out because
- 55:11it's just one of those days that, yeah, you know, finish
- 55:14them up the next day, but I don't like doing that if I can't
- 55:18help it. Well, I just want to let
- 55:23everybody know if you haven't seen it, it's on the RCA
- 55:28Facebook page and Rural Carriers Facebook page that I put the
- 55:33announcement in in regards to running for president and have
- 55:38gotten quite a bit of hits on on the one and support off my own
- 55:44Facebook page too. And I just want to let people
- 55:48know that I'm not doing this for myself because of the fact that,
- 55:54you know, I'm I've more than qualified for retirement.
- 55:57I've got the money put away. I'm doing this because I go in
- 56:02on Monday and I hate the thought of going in the office and as
- 56:06soon as you get on my route, my mood changes.
- 56:09And I'm a happy person again because I love delivering my
- 56:14mail, even in bad weather and everything.
- 56:16I love seeing my people, I love seeing the customers, the kids,
- 56:19the dogs and all that. And I love the craft.
- 56:24I I love the people who go out there and go through the grind
- 56:29every day, weather, conditions, management, whatever.
- 56:34And I'm running for president because I want these people to
- 56:39be able to go to work free from hostile work environment, free
- 56:43from intimidation. They have the dignity and
- 56:47respect of the job that they're performing every day.
- 56:49While people are sitting on their ass and making decisions
- 56:52in regards to their careers and their livelihood, I do not want
- 56:59another carrier to ever suffer. Some of the the horror stories
- 57:06that I've seen on social media I I do not want to see a carrier
- 57:11ever suffer an EP like one of mine did and I got his job back
- 57:16for him but then have ADR turn around and say we got his job
- 57:21back but he can't have any back pay for 4 1/2 months as a
- 57:25grandparent, As a parent I always hated these words.
- 57:31Some assembly required batteries not included as a carrier with a
- 57:37grievance. The words I hate are settled for
- 57:42language. When we install a new director
- 57:46of steward operation I do not ever want to see a grievance
- 57:52that says settled for language. The only language I want to hear
- 57:57is the carrier will be compensated period.
- 58:04If we are going to work in this environment with these
- 58:09incompetent management with these hostile Dr. district
- 58:14managers or OICSPMSI want them to pay.
- 58:21So as present, I don't ever want to see that language on a
- 58:26grievance. That is the language of the last
- 58:28resort. And hopefully James, as director
- 58:37Robert Stewart Operations, will never, ever write that language
- 58:41into a grievance at a step three or Step 4.
- 58:46The only way I want to settle for language is if there is
- 58:50absolutely zero existing language that that grievance is
- 58:56being fought over because we have language going back over
- 59:02100 years and we're turning around and settling for a slap
- 59:08on the hand of management. I don't think so.
- 59:11Management's had enough slaps on the hands, management had enough
- 59:14finger wagging from leadership. It's time to put our boot down
- 59:18and say we've got this language. You failed to follow this
- 59:22language. Now it's time to pay the rural
- 59:25carriers for you. Failing to follow that language
- 59:29enough's enough. We've been soft handed on them
- 59:33and I've heard articles and read articles all the way back into
- 59:37the 70s where the exact same language was used by management.
- 59:44And yet we're still turning around and you and playing with
- 59:47them with kids gloves, playing touch football with them?
- 59:52I don't think so. We are adults.
- 59:55Our carriers are adults. Management is a whole group of
- 59:59adults, and you can argue some of them don't act like it, but
- 1:00:05it's time to be adults and time for us to settle it like adults.
- 1:00:11And if you made a mistake, pay up for it.
- 1:00:18Toasty, what is your take on what these two gentlemen just
- 1:00:22said? I'm right with Bill.
- 1:00:25I love the job. The job itself I enjoy doing
- 1:00:30every day. I could do it all the way
- 1:00:32through retirement age if I needed to.
- 1:00:36I absolutely love the people I work with.
- 1:00:38I love my customers. I love most of my dogs as long
- 1:00:41as they're not aggressive with me, and I want that for
- 1:00:47everyone. I want that for all our RCASI
- 1:00:50want that for our PTFSI want that for our arcs.
- 1:00:52I want everyone to come in, be able to do their job, do it with
- 1:00:56pride and integrity, and not be bothered by management,
- 1:00:59micromanaging and sitting behind a desk reading reports.
- 1:01:03Right now, our current board is just reading reports, just like
- 1:01:07management. We know the numbers are down.
- 1:01:09We know this, we know that because they're looking at
- 1:01:12spreadsheets just like management.
- 1:01:14It's time that we start putting people in office that will
- 1:01:19actually that actually know the experience, have experienced
- 1:01:22COVID, have experienced the boost in e-commerce that we've
- 1:01:26gotten since then that have experienced R Rex And my job as
- 1:01:31committee person, should I get it is to back up Bill and to do
- 1:01:36everything that he sends down to me.
- 1:01:38And I will do that. I will do that with an honesty
- 1:01:40and integrity and to the utmost ability that I have.
- 1:01:48Heard that right. You are considering running for
- 1:01:52Executive Committeeman of the National Board.
- 1:01:54Correct. Yay.
- 1:01:58Let's go toasty. I'll post something like Bill
- 1:02:04did on all the groups too, to go ahead and let people know that
- 1:02:06we're here, we're ready for this change, we're ready to step up.
- 1:02:10I I honestly don't want to step away from my route because it is
- 1:02:14a four year commitment, but like I've heard James say before, the
- 1:02:19needs of the craft or greater than my own.
- 1:02:25And that's that. That's my perfect sentiment.
- 1:02:27But you know, I I have nothing to gain, you know, in regards to
- 1:02:34working OK, financially OK. The satisfaction I get all the
- 1:02:39time and and unfortunately I I don't have a great office, but
- 1:02:43you know it, it functions OK in regards to relationship with
- 1:02:48other carriers. But that was one of the things
- 1:02:50that being a steward twice in my office I've learned that you
- 1:02:58have to disassociate your personal likes, dislikes for the
- 1:03:02people that you're representing. I want a gentleman, a $950
- 1:03:07settlement and it took nine months in the making to get it.
- 1:03:11When he got the payment and it said on their grievous payment
- 1:03:15included, he came over to me and asked me what it was from and I
- 1:03:19said it was from nine months ago, he says.
- 1:03:21Well, I forgot about that and I says I don't ever forget.
- 1:03:25And I pushed and I pushed and I pushed and I worked the local
- 1:03:28postmaster to the point where he finally just said, OK, Bill, I'm
- 1:03:33tired of fighting with you. He says if you have too much
- 1:03:36going on this argument, you know, for me to contest, I'm
- 1:03:39just paying it. And I says, here's a settlement
- 1:03:41form, He signed the settlement form and the guy got paid the
- 1:03:44next pay period. I don't personally like the
- 1:03:49person, but it didn't matter because he's one of my fellow
- 1:03:53members. He's a brother in the union.
- 1:03:56He's a brother in the craft. If he wasn't in the union, I'd
- 1:04:00still fight for him the same way because that's how much
- 1:04:03commitment I have into making sure that we are treated with
- 1:04:07justice, respect and equally as grown adults.
- 1:04:11Like, like you said, we're all adults.
- 1:04:14Don't come over and try to belittle us.
- 1:04:16Don't try to come over and intimidate us.
- 1:04:19I had a supervisor used to come over and and be little people.
- 1:04:23One day she tried it on me and I turned around and I said, I'm
- 1:04:26not your kid, Don't you ever talk to me like that again.
- 1:04:32And she just stood there and got flushed.
- 1:04:35And I said, now when you know how to talk to an adult, you
- 1:04:38come back to me. I said.
- 1:04:39Otherwise I will file for stress.
- 1:04:42I will call EAPI, walk out of this office in 5 minutes, and
- 1:04:46you'll see me in 2 weeks when I feel that you've learned your
- 1:04:49lesson. She didn't bother me for two
- 1:04:54weeks, but she never talked to me like that again either.
- 1:05:00If you don't stand up for yourself, and and more
- 1:05:04importantly, if you don't stand up for others, your office will
- 1:05:08never get better. It will never improve.
- 1:05:10The environment will never improve.
- 1:05:13And that's what we want. We want to be able to come in,
- 1:05:17get us our mail, get us our flats, get us our parcel, get us
- 1:05:20our accountables. You have certain things that
- 1:05:23you're responsible to do. All you have to do is get the
- 1:05:26material to us. We'll work it, take it out and
- 1:05:29deliver it. It's that simple.
- 1:05:32There is no need to come over and flex your management muscle
- 1:05:36to exert your authority over us. What management doesn't realize
- 1:05:42is that they may have authority over us, but they have a greater
- 1:05:46responsibility to us. And that's what they need to be
- 1:05:53reminded of. You know, these step fours have
- 1:05:55been sitting on the table for years.
- 1:05:58I'm sorry, James. You're going to take every one
- 1:06:01of them and you're going to put them to bed ASAP.
- 1:06:06Because enough of the bullshit, the haranguing, the delays for
- 1:06:13something as simple as you violated the contract.
- 1:06:17We need to be remedied. There's no reason for one to be
- 1:06:22sitting there for six years and there is no argument that
- 1:06:26leadership can make as to why it's been sitting there for six
- 1:06:30years, 2018. I know of a step four that's
- 1:06:34been sitting since 2018. That is not right now.
- 1:06:39Leadership can turn around and say we've been fighting the step
- 1:06:42fours and so on and so forth, but just as many are coming in
- 1:06:45as the ones we're resolving, that's an excuse.
- 1:06:51If you're wanting to fight for these step fours, you need to be
- 1:06:53stepping up fighting them or moving them to arbitration,
- 1:06:58because otherwise they're just going to sit in limbo and
- 1:07:01carriers are going to wonder, are you even doing your job?
- 1:07:05And as Director of Stewart Operations, James, I also want
- 1:07:09you to get rid of the language of the settled grievances,
- 1:07:13saying this settlement will not be used in future settlement as
- 1:07:19a precedent. It isn't.
- 1:07:22Once you once you've established that settlement, that sets a
- 1:07:25precedent for anything following.
- 1:07:28Yeah, non binding settlement, yeah.
- 1:07:31Yeah. That is the biggest line of
- 1:07:33horseshit that management hides behind.
- 1:07:36And frankly, I've turned around and used the articles and
- 1:07:40arguments for previous grievances for my own because
- 1:07:45guess what? Nobody.
- 1:07:46Management will go back and read the ones I pulled them from to
- 1:07:49find out that you're not supposed to be using them.
- 1:07:54But that's OK. I'll take advantage of
- 1:07:56management's ignorance and I have quite often.
- 1:08:01Yeah it should. Any any grievance that is made
- 1:08:05is a binding contract. Unless somebody turns around and
- 1:08:12writes in there, it's a non binding contract.
- 1:08:16So whoever it is that settles them for non binding language is
- 1:08:22incompetent in and grievance arguing because once you and
- 1:08:27management sign it, it becomes a legally binding document between
- 1:08:32the steward and management. So if you're not willing to make
- 1:08:38it binding so others can use it, what are you really fighting
- 1:08:41for? You're you're giving management
- 1:08:43a, a, a, you know, a a watch, you know.
- 1:08:45Yeah. You know, I mean it's it's the
- 1:08:49settling for language. I yeah, I don't know.
- 1:08:53I mean, at least put in a cease and desist rather than just a
- 1:08:59settling for language because now they're like, oh, well, I
- 1:09:03got away with this time. I'm going to be able to get away
- 1:09:05with it next time. I mean, at least at the bare
- 1:09:08minimum, you started a paper trail on settling for language,
- 1:09:12which I have to agree is just there's a contract.
- 1:09:16You're you're intentionally violating the contract.
- 1:09:20Oh, well, yeah, the language is in there.
- 1:09:22So just don't do it anymore. How is that you're fixing
- 1:09:26anything? You're violating already set
- 1:09:30language, and then you turn around and settle for language
- 1:09:35for language that already exists.
- 1:09:36That is the biggest mistake any person can make is settling for
- 1:09:40language because it's a complete slap on the wrist and telling
- 1:09:46management it's OK don't do it again.
- 1:09:49And see, you know, for everybody listening and anybody who will
- 1:09:53be listening to this podcast, if you listen to the interaction
- 1:09:57that we have and our response to the, you know, live stage
- 1:10:01comments and the DMS, the emails that we get, This is not just
- 1:10:05about electing us to the National Board, This is about
- 1:10:09electing yourselves to the National Board because we will
- 1:10:12be available to listen to you. We will act on your concern.
- 1:10:17It's not a matter of nine people up there.
- 1:10:19They're the ones responsible for enacting an indoctrinating
- 1:10:24policy that affects over 100,000 lives.
- 1:10:28And then the people who are in those people's lives, the
- 1:10:31families, you know, the children, the grandparents that
- 1:10:35are living with them, whoever it's in fact it's affecting
- 1:10:40approximately what, 300, four, 100,000 people in regards to
- 1:10:45what our union does for us. So they're therefore we're we're
- 1:10:51not we're we're not going to be a gang of nine up there acting
- 1:10:55on our own interests. We're we're going to be there
- 1:10:57safeguarding your interests, your education, your paycheck.
- 1:11:01But we need your help too. We need to know the areas of
- 1:11:05concern that need to be addressed in which part of the
- 1:11:07country at which little post office, which large parts of the
- 1:11:10post office. And that's what we're going to
- 1:11:14do. We will be available.
- 1:11:16We will not be abstract leaders. We will be your representatives.
- 1:11:23And that's what being elected to the national board is to
- 1:11:26represent you, not ourselves. And as Jared just said,
- 1:11:32transparency. If if we can't have transparency
- 1:11:36of our own national board and we don't, how can we expect it from
- 1:11:40the post office? I agree completely with that and
- 1:11:44on top of that not only are we running for national board,
- 1:11:48we're also turning around and we are writing our own binding and
- 1:11:53non binding resolutions for our next National Convention.
- 1:11:59We're looking forward to changing things not only as
- 1:12:03leadership, but also just as members of the craft.
- 1:12:07Just as you can file your finding and non binding
- 1:12:10resolutions. We're not stopping trying to fix
- 1:12:14things just to run for office, we're still trying to fix them
- 1:12:18while running for office, and we're asking you guys to do the
- 1:12:22same. Do the same thing.
- 1:12:23Get the resolutions in there, run for delegate, vote for
- 1:12:27delegates, Get involved in your union.
- 1:12:30Find out who your designated union Rep is.
- 1:12:33If you feel the need to run to be your local union steward in
- 1:12:37your office, and it doesn't matter if you have one carrier
- 1:12:40in your office or you have 1000 carriers in your office or
- 1:12:44you're part of one of those new S&D CS.
- 1:12:47If there's a need in your craft in that office, help it out.
- 1:12:53Because we are the rural carrier union this craft.
- 1:12:58We are our brothers and sisters keepers and we need to take care
- 1:13:02of each other. Absolutely, guys.
- 1:13:05And I know we've all been on our soapboxes tonight, but I think
- 1:13:08we're going to start winding it down.
- 1:13:10Well, I'm pretty much in agreement with a lot of the
- 1:13:13recent comments now coming through that I'm.
- 1:13:16I'm not impressed with what our union has done so far.
- 1:13:20There there's been no communication, there's been no
- 1:13:23transparency. They said that they were going
- 1:13:26to start updating us with these new YouTube videos and they've
- 1:13:30posted all of two, and the last one was right around Christmas
- 1:13:34time. We're not getting a lot of
- 1:13:37information from our own union and of course we're not going to
- 1:13:40get information from the post office because it would not
- 1:13:44benefit them. It would benefit us to actually
- 1:13:47have the information we need to get something out there to go
- 1:13:52ahead and educate our current or our Co workers here and our
- 1:13:59brothers and sisters in this union.
- 1:14:01That's why Y'all started this podcast, that's why Roll
- 1:14:03info.net started their website because our union wants to put
- 1:14:09it behind a paywall. We shouldn't do that.
- 1:14:11We should create value so that people want to join the union
- 1:14:15and not get out of it like they're currently doing.
- 1:14:19I love the craft, I love the job.
- 1:14:21I love everything about it. But we do need a better union,
- 1:14:26and I think we can make it on our own.
- 1:14:28We have to step up, We have to vote in the right people.
- 1:14:31We have to go to our conventions and get these resolutions passed
- 1:14:36of what we want to see changed. We have to step up, all of us.
- 1:14:40Absolutely agree with you on that, Josh, your final thoughts
- 1:14:44tonight. Be safe this coming week.
- 1:14:47Don't get yourself overwhelmed. If you do.
- 1:14:51Take a step back. Take a deep breath.
- 1:14:54Step back in. Have a good week.
- 1:14:58See you next time. James.
- 1:15:00Well, anybody can talk a big game.
- 1:15:03Anybody can make things look good just to get themselves
- 1:15:06elected. But not a lot of people will
- 1:15:10stand in front of people and say, point out my flaws and tell
- 1:15:13me about them. Let me know the mistakes I'm
- 1:15:16making, because the only way you grow is you learn from your
- 1:15:19mistakes. People make mistakes.
- 1:15:22We're only human. But at the end of the day, it's
- 1:15:26about the fight in that person to make things right, to make
- 1:15:31things better, to help and to solve issues that people have.
- 1:15:38Because no matter what happens, no matter where things go, at
- 1:15:43the end of the day, we're all in this together, Bill.
- 1:15:47Well I was thinking that in of the packet I received from our
- 1:15:51state No Thursday and it's the biannual statement in regards to
- 1:15:57you know our dues check that we give from the state membership
- 1:16:02the the the amount of dues and everything else.
- 1:16:04The resolution forms that we hand out at our meetings and I
- 1:16:08and I looked at the check and it it was for oh 1800 and some
- 1:16:12dollars which was up over the $1700.
- 1:16:16The the range that I've been getting for the last you know
- 1:16:19three payments and I looked at the the dues payment page and I
- 1:16:24says Oh my God we lost more members.
- 1:16:27Well how did I get a bigger check.
- 1:16:28Well because dues went up and and that's that's the the
- 1:16:34problem with this union is that we're losing members and we're
- 1:16:39putting the financial burden on on the rest of the craft that
- 1:16:42are our union paying dues members and and it's just
- 1:16:46sitting here and I'm going to like you, OK we're going to make
- 1:16:49more money by charging more people or less people more money
- 1:16:54for their dues. It's like paying for you know
- 1:16:56more taxes for people who are in coming in this country not
- 1:16:59paying any taxes. It just doesn't seem fair,
- 1:17:02doesn't seem right and and I can understand certain reasons why
- 1:17:08people don't want to join the union.
- 1:17:11I would like to take this opportunity and encourage people
- 1:17:14to join the union because then you have a voice and like I
- 1:17:21often have said to Carolyn in our office about politics and
- 1:17:26she, oh, I don't care about this.
- 1:17:28I don't care about that. And then, you know, we get the
- 1:17:32political mail and she screams bloody murder about it.
- 1:17:35And I said, well, but you don't care about, you know, the
- 1:17:38election. And she goes, you're right and
- 1:17:41says I haven't voted in like 20 years.
- 1:17:43And I said that's the problem. The apathy.
- 1:17:48Apathy solves nothing. Involvement does.
- 1:17:53Having a voice, using that voice, stepping up to the plate
- 1:17:58and saying the king is naked. If you don't bring your voice to
- 1:18:05the battle, if you're not in the union, you have no voice.
- 1:18:11You can rant and rave all you want on social media.
- 1:18:14It won't solve anything. If you want something done, join
- 1:18:20union. Get involved, Make the effort.
- 1:18:24If your paycheck, your livelihood, your future is not
- 1:18:29worth that, then you know that's on you and and and I understand
- 1:18:36some people have reached the level of apathy where you can't
- 1:18:40bring them back. But for those who are
- 1:18:42questioning the value of being in the union, it is better to
- 1:18:46have a say than to have others speak for you because they may
- 1:18:53not be speaking. Your voice, your concerns, the
- 1:18:57issues that you want to address, if you want them address, you
- 1:19:02have to be able to speak. If you want to be able to speak,
- 1:19:05you must be in the union. I I hate to be a union organizer
- 1:19:11here per Southeast, but the fact of the matter is that's the only
- 1:19:15way you're going to institute change.
- 1:19:19With that, everybody go. Have a good week.
- 1:19:22Hope the weather's kinder to you this week coming up than it has
- 1:19:27been in the past couple. Everybody be safe.
- 1:19:30Do your job well. Do it efficiently,
- 1:19:32professionally. Get home safe.
- 1:19:35You're in the most important delivery of the day.
- 1:19:38Get home to your loved ones. Thank you guys.
- 1:19:41Wow, I don't even know how to follow up with all that tonight.
- 1:19:47It has definitely been a mixed bag tonight, that's for sure.
- 1:19:50I again, everybody stay safe. I can't disagree with a single
- 1:19:55thing that any one of these gentlemen has said tonight.
- 1:19:58It's it's really touching and I know they are all speaking from
- 1:20:03the hearts and it's just as much as they do.
- 1:20:06You know I. I I love my job.
- 1:20:09I I love my route. I love my people.
- 1:20:11I love my dogs. I love the service I provide to
- 1:20:13my customers. I don't like the way that
- 1:20:17management treats us. You know, I I'm in this fight
- 1:20:20not just for my office not just for myself but every single one
- 1:20:23of you guys out there. Every single one of you in the
- 1:20:26craft and you know I, I've pretty much have dedicated my
- 1:20:31last few years several years to being more involved and I was
- 1:20:37really, I mean after I made the now I have a big kind of
- 1:20:40announcement to follow up with here guys since the cat's out of
- 1:20:43the bag with the family. So if I after I made the
- 1:20:47announcement New Year's that I was going to run for office.
- 1:20:51I then had a big a big announcement at home that came
- 1:20:56about that really made me think I may not even go to National at
- 1:20:59all this year. But I was told that I need to go
- 1:21:05and I should go even though I will be a grandmother either
- 1:21:11just before just after or possibly during National
- 1:21:15Convention. So cats all the bag with the
- 1:21:18family so I can put it out there.
- 1:21:19But I my daughter told me mom you need to go.
- 1:21:23That's where you need to be and we'll be OK at home.
- 1:21:27So that's my big announcement at the end and.
- 1:21:34Congratulations. Thank you.
- 1:21:36So wasn't expected. It's still, but I, like I said
- 1:21:43with further talk with the rest of the family And as of right
- 1:21:46now, a tentative 2 due date is literally the day before
- 1:21:49National Convention starts. I Have you picked?
- 1:21:54Have you picked? Have you picked your grandma's
- 1:21:55nickname yet? No.
- 1:21:58No, not yet. No.
- 1:22:01But I you know, I talked to her more.
- 1:22:04I said I won't go. I mean, I'll be.
- 1:22:05Here she goes. No, Mom.
- 1:22:07She goes. You.
- 1:22:08She goes. If I was, if the roles were
- 1:22:10reversed, she goes. I would want to go.
- 1:22:12She goes, You need to go. She goes.
- 1:22:14That's where you need to be. This is what you need to do.
- 1:22:18You need to go. So yes, I am.
- 1:22:21I'm not canceling. I had thought about it,
- 1:22:25seriously, had thought about it. So as of right now, no, I am not
- 1:22:28canceling. I am still planning on going and
- 1:22:31I'm still planning on running. So I just wanted to put that out
- 1:22:36there to everybody. That's kind of been the secret
- 1:22:40I've been trying to figure out and had to let the rest of the
- 1:22:43family members know, as we all know, the drama with my
- 1:22:46daughter. So.
- 1:22:49But again, like I said, I love my job, I love my craft.
- 1:22:51I love, you know, I the National Board is not a retirement plan
- 1:22:56for me. I want to retire from my route,
- 1:23:00but I want to be able to assist every single carrier before I
- 1:23:04get to that point where I'm ready to retire.
- 1:23:06I want to be able to stand up for every single buddy.
- 1:23:09I want to be able to implement ways of better training our RC
- 1:23:12as not just Academy, but at the end the office training as well.
- 1:23:17It, you know, throwing them to the wolves after three days,
- 1:23:20even though you know, yes, we have the contractual language
- 1:23:23now of two full pay periods on their primary route, you know
- 1:23:28that that's great. It's a starting point.
- 1:23:30But still, even after those two full pay periods, for some
- 1:23:33carriers that may only be four days, that may only be two days
- 1:23:37depending if they're on the J route.
- 1:23:39That doesn't mean that they're ready to be thrown to the wolves
- 1:23:41and thrown on another route or sent to another office
- 1:23:45completely, not even knowing fully what they are to do yet.
- 1:23:49And to me, I think we need more. And it's not necessarily the
- 1:23:52hand holding, but I think it's just as I've said it before and
- 1:23:56I actually said a couple years ago, you know, more of a
- 1:23:58mentorship, you know, seeing like I'm doing tomorrow morning
- 1:24:01with my RCA. You know, he's been in there for
- 1:24:04going out a couple months. He started just around his
- 1:24:06Christmas, was starting to pick, you know, gear up.
- 1:24:09I want to see where he's at, You know, I want to find out where
- 1:24:12he's at, what he still needs to learn, where he still needs to
- 1:24:15go to make him better. He he really enjoys the job.
- 1:24:18He loves the job. He likes the aspects of it.
- 1:24:21But how else can we get him to that level where he, you know,
- 1:24:24he should be and work to progress to that level, you
- 1:24:27know, and that's that's my goals are to find some sort of way to
- 1:24:31do that across the board, across the country for every RCA that
- 1:24:34walks in that door. So I'm at no people.
- 1:24:38I want everybody to have a good safe week out there and we will
- 1:24:43be back next week. Anyway, I can tell you where to
- 1:24:59put it, but you know that's not kosher.
- 1:25:03Yeah, I got to find something good for the like the back end,
- 1:25:06though. Man, I'm going to be a grandma.
