- 2:20a mean good once. She's going to join us a little bit later
- 2:22on at the show with the Mayor of Monday segment that'll be in the third
- 2:25segment of the show. Yeah, the third segment, Mathless Nathan my strong
- 2:30suit, the third segment of the show that's coming up a little bit later.
- 2:32I also think that Andy Shay from The Dirty Birds is going to stop
- 2:37by the studio as well. I reference to Children's Home Society and we have
- 2:40Mary White with us from the Children's Home Society. Mary, Good morning,
- 2:44How are you? I am fun, I'm doing great today. We're happy
- 2:46to be here. Well, thank you for being here. And I want
- 2:50to talk about first of all before we get into this special program. And
- 2:53I kind of reference that they're at the top of the show, but you
- 2:54get so many different things going on with the Children's Home Society. What is
- 2:58the actual mission of the Children's Home Society? What does it the U folks
- 3:02do. Our mission is to promote the well being of all children. Our
- 3:07current efforts are directed at finding lifetime families for children, nurturing and strengthening families,
- 3:15and helping them to be strong and there for their children. And this
- 3:21month, the month of May is a pretty big month for you. It
- 3:23is. This is foster Care Awareness Month. It's also the Take It Home
- 3:28for Mother's Stay campaign. So there's a lot going on in the month of
- 3:31May. And I mentioned the foster care thing. Last week. I had
- 3:36some other folks that are doing this foster care summit which is going to be
- 3:38over in Putnam County over the River rid Church letter this week, and they're
- 3:42bringing a lot of different people in. And I say that because I've kind
- 3:46of highlighted it on the show Mary last week, the issues with foster care
- 3:50in West Virginia and how West Virginia, I mean, we have more we
- 3:53have more kids in foster care than any of the state in the Union.
- 3:55Yes, that's true. And if there's any opportune tunity to bring that to
- 4:01light and to talk about the needs of West Virginia's children. We want to
- 4:04do that. We will be at river Ridge Church and you know we're always
- 4:10out in our communities talking about the need for foster and adoptive families, but
- 4:15also the need to strengthen families so that children can remain at home safe.
- 4:21So there are two parts to that. So we really do have a foster
- 4:26care crisis in the state as far as the number of children coming into care
- 4:30the need for good foster homes until those children can go back home or otherwise
- 4:36be adopted. Um, So we work on that every day, and I
- 4:41know every other foster care agency in the state does the same and many of
- 4:46the different groups you are forced to work together. But that's a good thing.
- 4:49Oh, it is a kind of network and see what works and what
- 4:53doesn't work. Why why exactly are we in this situation in West Virginia And
- 4:57your opinion what with the with the crisis level for foster care, Well,
- 5:00I think it's a combination of things that has happened over time. We went
- 5:05from having twenty five hundred to three thousand children in foster care to nearly seven
- 5:13thousand and what time frame was that, I mean approximately, Okay, I
- 5:16would say in the last five years, the last five years, we have
- 5:19gone from from twenty five hundred to over seven thousand, four years, while
- 5:24the state's population has gone down. So you got to keep that in mind.
- 5:28And the couple of key factors and that has been the opioid epidemic,
- 5:33the ongoing drug crises in the state. Um, you know, um,
- 5:41families were falling apart, children were being removed. We still continue to see,
- 5:46you know, the fallout of the drug epidemic, and we'll probably still
- 5:51continue to see children come into care until we can do more to make that
- 5:57situation better. And then I think you have other factors. You have economic
- 6:00factors. There are lots of reasons for neglect of children, and so I
- 6:06think there's a lot of different things going on in West Virginia all at one
- 6:12time. And then COVID happened and we saw people leave the workforce, and
- 6:17the most critical infrastructure is you know, with the DHR they lost GENO employees,
- 6:26child welfare agencies have lost employees. So I think it's it's not just
- 6:30one issue, it's a lot of different things. That's sort of a perfect
- 6:36storm that's happened in the last five or six years, and but we have
- 6:42to work to get out of that. And I think we are. I
- 6:45think we're working every day to put more programs and services in place. We're
- 6:49working to hire as many people as we can across the board, every state
- 6:55employee, every private employee. We're trying to do that. So we're working
- 7:00to get to a better place for our kids in West Virginia. We're talking
- 7:03with Mary. Why did the Children's Home Society here in five eighty live five
- 7:06eight eylive brought to and parted by Riley's Tools of Saint Alban dro home for
- 7:10quality case knives, caves. Knives are the epitome of American craftsmanship and Riley's
- 7:14Tools and Saint Alban's one of West Virginia's oldest case platinum dealers with pocket knives,
- 7:17sports knives, culinary knives and specialty knives. And start to check out
- 7:21their store two oh four Main Street and Saint Albans. Now, you know,
- 7:24we do the show from the Parmar storage studio. If there's not a
- 7:27Parmar store near you now, there will be soon. But that having been
- 7:30said this month and actually through Mother's Day when people come into Parmar stores or
- 7:36for that matter, any store that's part of the Omega group, which is
- 7:41kind of like the trade organization basically for convenience and grocery stores and oil and
- 7:45gas retributors, etc. When you go into any participating Omega store, not
- 7:48just palm Are any of them, you can contribute to the Children's Home Society
- 7:53and talk about this campaign you've got going them. Oh thank you. This
- 7:56is our thirteenth year for the Taking It Home for Mother's Stay Camp, and
- 8:01at the omegaconvenience stores you will have the opportunity to purchase a bright pink flower.
- 8:07You can sign your mother's name, your grandmother, you're a sister,
- 8:11anyone you want to honor from Other's Day and help West Virginia's children. This
- 8:16is our largest awareness campaign and the reason for that is we have over five
- 8:20hundred and thirty stores that are Omega members that are participating. So when people
- 8:26purchase that flower, they get to hear about Children's Home Society. So it
- 8:31helps us to recruit foster families, adoptive families. It helps us recruit volunteers
- 8:37and mentors and employees. So it has become our greatest awareness campaign. The
- 8:43funds are amazing that they raise, but it's all about helping people understand what
- 8:50Children's Home Society does and how they can help make a difference for West Virginia's
- 8:56children. I mean, and we see the difference that's being made every day
- 9:01through programs like this. And hats off to all the stores of Omega for
- 9:07doing this and thirteen years. At what you said, thirteen this is our
- 9:09thirteenth year. Yes, and that's a testament to not only the stores and
- 9:15their hard work, but also the customers that are willing to commit and think
- 9:18about you know, West Virginia is Mary a relatively small state. It's a
- 9:22very small state, and a lot of times in these stores when people come
- 9:26in, they know their customers. For the most part, it's not just
- 9:28everybody pulling off the inner say. A lot of times it's the same people
- 9:31that come in every day. They come in and give some coffee and something
- 9:33for their lunch, or stop on the way home and get a lottery ticket
- 9:35or whatever. And you get to know those people and sometimes you can shame
- 9:39them into it, and that's not always a bad thing. Well, I
- 9:43have been to I've traveled across the state in recent weeks, and I stop
- 9:48in at the convenience stores because it's important for us to say thank you personally.
- 9:54And the reason it works so well is because those clerks are so dedicated
- 9:58to it, and there's so happy to show you the flowers that they have
- 10:01hung up and how many they've sold, and what their goal is. And
- 10:07I've talked to clerks about, you know, their history around foster care or
- 10:13their families work to help children, and so it brings us all together.
- 10:18There's such a connection there, and they are the ones who make it happen
- 10:22every day. And the convenience stores that participate, their owners, they just
- 10:30really support it. They encourage it. And I can say this, I've
- 10:35never met a group like the West Virginia Oil Marketers and Grocers Association that truly
- 10:41is dedicated to helping West Virginia's children in so many ways. They just do
- 10:46so many different things well. And I think too, that there's a certain
- 10:52level of competition that comes in not only with the individual clerks inside the stores.
- 10:56You know, Okay, I work you know three to ten or what
- 11:00and I sold more than you did in the morning, but also between the
- 11:03different stores and the different store groups, and there are various ones that are
- 11:07part of that Omega group and that's a little competitive for them as well.
- 11:11Oh. Absolutely, this year we have not only Parmar, but we have
- 11:15the little general convenience stores, the Gomarts, bfs, we have Rocks up
- 11:22in the Panhandle, we have De Fazio Oil, and this year we have
- 11:26new to the campaign is City Fuel and Ice. And so we're just so
- 11:31thrilled. And actually there's a convenience store or several in every community, so
- 11:37it's a huge outreach and it's just an amazing awareness campaign. And this is
- 11:43an opportunity too, because you know, in the world of competition, no
- 11:46matter what the business is, you know, you're you're all being competitive with
- 11:48each other and you're trying to get into Mantage whatever. This is the one
- 11:52time that they kind of put that aside because what is good for a little
- 11:56General is good for Parmar, and it's good for Gomart and all these different
- 11:58stores that you mention. I'll just kind of work together, may talk about
- 12:01some of the success stories that you've seen working with the Children's Home Society.
- 12:05I don't mean specifically, I don't mean names or anything like that, but
- 12:09just just kind of random or you know, just kind of kind of a
- 12:11generalization. What are some of the success stories that you've seen in working with
- 12:16the Children's Home Society. Okay, well, I'll just start with a little
- 12:18bit of data. Last year, we cared for, or supported in some
- 12:24fashion in fourteen thousand, six hundred and twenty nine children and families statewide.
- 12:30Every day, we have about sixty five to seventy children we care for in
- 12:35our emergency child shelters and about two hundred and fifty children in foster care.
- 12:41Our Families Strengthening programs help thousands of people children and families across the state.
- 12:48And we're really seeing some great success with our older youth and care where we
- 12:54now have what we call independent living programs, so our older youth in our
- 13:00shelters or in foster care can then go into an independent living program and they
- 13:05get a social worker and an apartment and funds to start up, and we
- 13:09help them into their adult life. We just had a young man at one
- 13:13of our locations. He will be eighteen in June. He's going to go
- 13:18into our Morgantown independent living program and he's so excited and so there's just so
- 13:24many good things. I went to an adoption last week in Summers County,
- 13:30an adoption hearing of three children. Actually there were two hearings, and those
- 13:35children are so thrilled to have a lifetime family and to not have to worry.
- 13:41And we might not necessarily understand the impact of that. No matter the
- 13:46age of the child, once they know they have that lifetime family, it
- 13:50changes everything for them. Absolutely it does. Mary White is with us from
- 13:54the Children's Home Society West Virginia. Where can people learn more about the Children's
- 13:58Homes Society, the work that you do about this campaign? Give us some

- 14:45if you get to go to a store, be sure and say thank you
- 14:48to those folks because they're really the boots on the ground making this campaign so
- 14:52successful. And they really liked the us smile and a thank you. It
- 14:56means so much to them because they're doing that in a addition to their job

- 19:00parents and preventing lawsuits from them, not for protecting the children. The process
- 19:06takes too long, and bioparents that need to lose rights immediately hang on for
- 19:10months and months. Text says there is no finer group of people than Mary
- 19:15White and her staff and the volunteers with the state with the Children's Home Society
- 19:19West Virginia. There is no greater issues, says a texture facing the state
- 19:23than our exploding foster care population. And its broken system. Marrying the Children's
- 19:29Home Society do amazing work every day to help kids and their foster and adoptive
- 19:33families across the state. Thank you to all the local businesses and individuals that
- 19:36are participating in their annual Mothers Day fundraiser. Thanks for having Mary in this
- 19:40morning. Absolutely glad to do it. Tex says most children in foster care
- 19:45per capita in the nation I heard, says a Texture, most in the
- 19:49country and was shocked. Still a huge number, but not the most displaced
- 19:52children in the country. Strictly by the numbers, we are ranked twenty first
- 19:56in the country in displaced children according to a Texture. Well, are you
- 20:02excited about a Trump Biden rematch in twenty twenty four If you said no,
- 20:10you're on alone. It's interesting. I was doing a bit of a deep
- 20:15dive over this weekend on some of various things, various news sites and whatnot,
- 20:19and according to statistics and polling, a lot of what got President Trump
- 20:27elected in twenty sixteen was the independent vote. Now, when I say the
- 20:34independent vote, it doesn't necessarily mean those that are registered independent. It could
- 20:38be somebody that has an R or D after their name, but one of
- 20:41these people that say, look, I vote for the better person, doesn't
- 20:45matter necessarily what the party is. But it's so that's basically I'm thinking about
- 20:48independent voting mindset, not necessarily somebody who is registered as an independent. People
- 20:55that say, and you know them as well as I do that, you
- 20:56know, I don't vote for the party, I vote for the person.
- 21:00And so those people are what got Trump elected at least a portion of it
- 21:04in twenty sixteen. They simply wanted a change, and at that time Canada,
- 21:11Trump offered that change. He was a break from the norm and people
- 21:21saw him as a break from the norm as far as bureaucrats go, which
- 21:26is how many people viewed the Obama years and the Bush years before that,
- 21:33and certainly how they viewed candidate Hillary Clinton. Those same voters, in turn,
- 21:44did not support Trump in twenty twenty. They it is kind of interesting.
- 21:52They went back and they saw Joe Biden as the alternative somebody that had
- 22:00in in Washington for you know, a thousand years, basically yeah, give
- 22:04her, okay, no more than seven hundred. They saw Biden as that
- 22:07alternative, you know, and right or wrong, they saw him as a
- 22:14return to normal now the question is will those independent voters support President Biden this
- 22:26time? Many say that the answer is no, which could then open up
- 22:37the door for a third party, or this no labels group as it's being
- 22:42called. And hint, hint, Joe Mansion's name, Senator Joe Mansion's name
- 22:48is being thrown around a lot there. I was watching some man on the
- 22:56street, I guess you should say, people on the street. Interviews on
- 23:00some of the news shows over the weekend, and it's they were interviewing some
- 23:10younger people, and I can tell you I think it was. I think
- 23:14it was on ABC News on the Martha Ridott Show. It's on Sunday morning,
- 23:18and I can tell you that some of the young people that they interviewed
- 23:21ain't exactly excited over a Biden Trump rematch. I mean, just think about
- 23:27it this way. If you were young, and I am not, would
- 23:33you be excited over a Trump Biden rematch? I mean I certainly would not
- 23:41be. I mean, I'm fifty two now and I'm not excited about it.
- 23:45A country of three hundred and fifty million people and this is the best
- 23:51we can do. Florida Governor Rod De Santis was showing some signs of hope
- 23:57earlier, but this battle that he's got himself into with Disney has Republicans,
- 24:07let alone Democrats Republicans attacking him now. Nicki Haley, a Republican running for
- 24:12president, said she would welcome Disney to South Carolina, her home states,
- 24:18if Governor DeSantis doesn't want them in Florida. You know, and now it's
- 24:23still early, but if it were election time now, and let's face it,
- 24:33in the world of media, it never stops being election time, I
- 24:37feel pretty confident we would be looking at a Trump Biden rematch. And if
- 24:44that's the case, I think many people are going to choose to stay home
- 24:52and getting back to this no label thing. It's an actual group, and
- 25:00they have qualified to be on the Arizona ballot, and they're working to be
- 25:04qualified to be on the ballot in all fifty states, and a lot of
- 25:10people feel that this is going to be a hindrance to Joe Biden more so
- 25:17than Donald Trump. I will say this one thing is for sure, a
- 25:25lot of average people, people like us, like me, and you feel
- 25:33that both parties have been taken over by extremists on both sides. It's the
- 25:38left is way left and the right is way right, So how do we
- 25:45fix that. Of course, many people don't think it needs to be fixed
- 25:52at all. They're happy with the directions of the party. You know,
- 25:56I have a lot of Republican friends who could be happier with the state of
- 26:02the Republican Party right now. They love the fact that the party is now
- 26:08being controlled by the farthest right wing of the party, and the same with
- 26:15the left. And I just I don't think and I'm just just be espousing
- 26:26views. I don't think that's where most people are, the far right or
- 26:30far left. I think that most people's political ideology is somewhere in the middle.
- 26:40But at this point, neither party, in my opinion, seems to
- 26:47be overly interested in the middle of this point. Um, I mean,
- 26:52look at just just look at at who they who they court and the ideas
- 26:57that thing. And I'm talking about sides, So I'm not talking about Republicans
- 27:00or just Democrats or conservative I'm talking about both sides. Maybe maybe one day
- 27:08we'll get back to that, or maybe we won't. Who knows. Fiveitty

- 27:27says it's it isn't going to be Trump Biden in a rematch, is going
- 27:32to be a matchup between Trump and dark Brandon, according to a texture,
- 27:37h let me see, Dave, America has lost its mind and common sense
- 27:42in electing Biden as president, and we are seeing the negative results of this
- 27:47election. But to see him again, it's a candidate in twenty twenty four
- 27:49is beyond belief. Thanks Dave, Well, he's going to be the candidate.
- 27:52I mean, there's no doubt about it. I mean, the Democratic
- 27:55Party's not gonna put anybody up. It's it's definitely going to be Joe Biden.
- 28:00And there was a time when I thought it necessary that it may not
- 28:04be Trump, um, but what I'm seeing right now, it's it's gonna
- 28:11be Trump at this point. And you know, I mean two three four
- 28:14months ago I would have said no, it's Rond de Santas. But and
- 28:18I still I can't quite wrape my head around the fact that you know,
- 28:22everything that Trump touched in the last election turned to crap. But it's different
- 28:29in West Virginia, of course, but it's kind of where we are.
- 28:33U Text says Biden has been great for West Virginia. Just look at all
- 28:37the good jobs coming here because of his policies. According to Texter, Texture
- 28:42says, our elections will be more representative when Citizens United gets repealed and we
- 28:47have publicly funded elections. To a Texture. Locally, authorities are looking into
- 28:55an attempt at carjacking yesterday. It happened at Target out on the Corridor around
- 29:00seven thirty last night. According to can On nine one one dispatchers, South
- 29:03Charleston police were called to Target last night when an armed man tried to steal
- 29:08a woman's car. The subject is a blackmail with long hair that they said
- 29:12could have been a wig, So apparently they're looking for Rick James. He
- 29:18was also wearing a puffy purple jacket and in all seriousness, he is considered
- 29:23to be armed and dangerous. Had someone texting the show several times last week
- 29:30asking about some sort of controversy involving Ted Cruz. Going back to nationally.
- 29:34I'm all over the place this morning. Apparently, just days before January sixth,
- 29:40Senator Cruz shared with a producer from Fox News his proposal to get an
- 29:47audit going to potentially overturn the twenty twenty election results. Now, it was
- 29:52a conversation between Ted Cruz and Fox Business host Maria Barto Romo and another producer
- 29:59at Fox. The conversation was released by an attorney for Abbey Grossberg, who
- 30:03was the producer in question from Fox. Ted Cruz, of course one of
- 30:07those who refused to certify the election results, and Cruz, for his part's
- 30:15firing back saying none of this was a secret, and he says he actually
- 30:18went on on TV the next day and said the exact same thing. Now,
- 30:22for her part, the producer, Abbe Grossberg has two legal suits going
- 30:27against Fox at this time. She's a legend. She was coerced into giving
- 30:30misleading testimony in the dominion voting defamation case. The other part of the suit
- 30:37talks about the workplace culture at Fox News, specifically Tucker Carlson, who was
- 30:41fired last week. And this is why most people are saying the real reason
- 30:45why Carlson was fired. Grossberg in the suit talked about the poor working environment
- 30:49at Fox News, including sexism and demeaning minorities and those suffering from mental illness.

- 35:16right, my dear dear friend. It's wonderful. Andy Shay, owner of
- 35:27the Charleston Dirty Birdsry Andy Charleston great father too. There's lots of tables you
- 35:32have absolutely no and love them all. And and just in the off air
- 35:37conversation, we were talking Andy and I and yourself about about chores around the
- 35:42house. Andy and I apparently have a lot in common because our wives do
- 35:45most of the work around the house. And when it comes to back your
- 35:47outdoors is like even probably not enough. I don't know if it's literally all,
- 35:52but there's somewhere in between literally all and most for me. Yeah,
- 35:54well, I'm a fan of the great indoors. That's that's. I'm an
- 35:59indoor cat. I prefer to do the mowing and the weeding it. I
- 36:01prefer to do it because I just like to be outside. You know,
- 36:04you're just sick in my head. All right, So Andy, I want
- 36:07to get several things. I want to get to it the mayor, but
- 36:08I want to start to with you. Opening Night for the Dirty Birds was
- 36:13just passed Friday night on the road against Staten Island. And yeah, there
- 36:15are a lot of rain in New York this weekend. Exactly what games got
- 36:19played. It was scary rain too. I mean it was funny. So,
- 36:21I mean we only played Friday night and we got the w So I
- 36:24was joking with my buddy and a few other people. We got our first
- 36:27sweep. Yeah I want to know, but uh, we technically did sweep
- 36:30them. All right? So now, well those games are are they just?
- 36:34They just scrub? Will they be made up in another Now? It's
- 36:36kind of a bummer there. One percent be brought up. A one will
- 36:37be in July up in Staten Island, and the other bee in August and
- 36:42Staten Island, so I mean they will get played, but uh yeah,
- 36:45the guy's got a chance to come back here nice and early. They're playing
- 36:47on the field yesterday. They they're getting a little work in this morning before
- 36:52they head out to High Point. And it's a lot still. We had
- 36:54eating on the show on Friday. Uh and you kind of forget in this
- 36:59world of getting places quickly that in the world of baseball in the minor leagues
- 37:05you were You're still taking the bus and it was I think sixteen hours or
- 37:07something like that. There's something ridiculous like a slow bus. I think it
- 37:10is a heck of a bus ride, but I don't know about that much.
- 37:15I think we were like eight hours, maybe eight or nine, which
- 37:16still is not you know, lightning speed type thing. But you know,
- 37:20the other part of it that is kind of goofy. Of course we went
- 37:22up there two play three games, but making that trip for one game,
- 37:27right and then coming back pretty much the next day, that is weird.
- 37:30You know. It was kind of a and it was such a great win
- 37:34too. I mean their starting pitcher was mowing us down. I mean he
- 37:37had a no hitter through five, eleven strikeouts, no walks. You couldn't
- 37:40have had a better game, really, but because it was early, it's
- 37:44our league, it was nasty weather. They pulled him after five, and
- 37:46we put up five in the next two thirds on the next guy, and
- 37:50that was the game. So, I mean, we've got this cool momentum
- 37:53and then it's like, oh man, I've got three more days off and
- 37:57the home opener for the Dirty Birds is one week from tomorrow. You got
- 38:00it May Night at the week from tomorrow, and of course we'll have as
- 38:02we normally do on opening day, We'll have manager Billy Horn and whoever else,
- 38:07the cast of thousands, whoever maybe you'll be here, and whoever else
- 38:08he brings in on opening day. That's coming up next week. And you
- 38:14just made the announcement and I'll say one of the things, and then I've
- 38:15got some questions already waiting on the mayor and she and I know she's got
- 38:17some things she wants to get into as well. The announcement was made this
- 38:21past week of at this musical festival. It's good to be coming up,
- 38:23but to go Martin Ballpark later in the year, absolutely, I mean,
- 38:25it's something really truly that I've wanted to do since I've become the owner of
- 38:30the team in Charleston, a formerly power of course, when I first took
- 38:34over and now the Dirty Birds. You know, in that first season,
- 38:37we came out of the gates with Wiz Khalifa concert a few months in and
- 38:39it was awesome and it was great, and it was just the beginning though,
- 38:43because that was at that time it was still coming off of COVID.
- 38:45The whole concert and entertainment world was still very very wonky. Last year,
- 38:51I don't want to say we took a break, but it was in preparation
- 38:53of the field replacement, everything we had going on there. So when I
- 38:58was introduced to Alan with Airstream Ventures, I mean, it was the quickest
- 39:01yes of all time, and it was like, oh my gosh, that's
- 39:05small world awesome that it's like the two of us plus the city, plus
- 39:08Tim Brady plus everyone. Really you know, had kind of been visualizing this
- 39:13and then boom, in one meeting, we were all talking about it on
- 39:15the same page right away. So with that, I mean that was really
- 39:19only a couple of months ago. I mean, in a couple of months,
- 39:22we had the deal ironed out, we had the concept ironed out,
- 39:23we had the A one priority for me was that it had to be super
- 39:28super affordable tickets. It was almost like the artist were I want to figure
- 39:32that out. Second, I want to start with the affordable tickets, not
- 39:37book the artist, and then base the ticket prices off of that. So
- 39:40we were able to What we've been able to do is combine both. I
- 39:44mean our final lineup, which we have not announced yet, we will be
- 39:46announcing over the next several weeks. I mean already it's awesome and for twenty
- 39:52dollars the tickets starting at twenty bucks. I mean, I'm really pumped about
- 39:55what we've been able to put together and the response and the reception has been
- 40:00through the roof. And and again the complete lineup is us not even been
- 40:05announced yet, that's gonna be coming soon, Yes, exactly, We'll be.
- 40:08Part of it was planning and announcement and excitement part of it, you
- 40:13know, was definitely a kind of artist side and the other logistics piece of
- 40:16uh, you know, maybe not everyone could keep up with us. We
- 40:20were like, go go, go go, but uh, the entertainment world
- 40:23is there papers yes, so to put it, I think, and there's
- 40:29a lot of stuff going on at the at the ballpark. You know,
- 40:31I've never seen it um and I've been here since its inception and when it
- 40:35was built. But you know, you just got off a great week with
- 40:38the Savannah Bananas. Largest crowd in the history of the stadium, uh for
- 40:45two nights, by the way, and that comes off the heels of w
- 40:49View and Marshall playing, which was insane. Did you see the photos from
- 40:52that. I did, was out of town. I didn't get to go
- 40:54to the game, but I did see the photos from it. Yet,
- 40:57Yeah, it was absolutely amazing and the Savannah Bananas was what a what a
- 41:01catch Andy to get them? See what I did there. I'm a hockey
- 41:07moment, I was practicing before sport ball sport ball, but I mean,
- 41:10what a big deal. And I guess I didn't even realize when you booked
- 41:15them what the Savannah Bananas really would mean to Charleston and for our hotels and
- 41:22for our restaurants and really getting the largest crowd we've ever had, right,
- 41:25Yeah, and it was amazing. I mean, it was so fun.
- 41:28And don't be wrong, I certainly did not know this impact, but I
- 41:31mean that was the first thing that I said to Jesse Cole because at that
- 41:35time my family is still owned the team in lex in Kentucky, and I
- 41:37think more people because I had been there since two thousand and five, knew
- 41:40me as the Lexan and guy. But I told him right away. I
- 41:44was like, man, I'm telling you. I was like, I want
- 41:45to look at Charleston. I was like, for you know, if it's
- 41:49one or the other type thing, let's talk Charleston. And you know,
- 41:52it was just so important. It was. It was really awesome because for
- 41:55their business model, a bigger stadium and more tickets sold, technically, you
- 42:00know, it would have meant more money for them. But I was so
- 42:05pumped. He believed in me, believed in what and like when they were
- 42:07just so thankful. They were so palmed the reception, they loved the community.
- 42:15I mean, it was it was amazing. And that's you know,
- 42:16that's something that we've talked about since the first time that we met Mayor,
- 42:20that the non the Dirty Birds. It's the home of the Dirty Birds,
- 42:22it's the Dirty Birds Stadium and everything, but it's those non events. To
- 42:27use a three hundred and sixty five day calendar, and I swear we have
- 42:30one hundred percent had way more people in our stadium than people who have actually
- 42:34started their season. I mean, that's amazing. When you look nationwide,
- 42:37there are dozens and dozens of professional baseball teams that have not had the crowds
- 42:42that we have, and we haven't even had our first game yet. Right,
- 42:45it's about turns too, right. Yes, In that filmy, I
- 42:49got a phone call for you. Yea, and so Andy and Miski put
- 42:51those headphones on there so you can hear the phone called that. I don't
- 42:53know if Asess Shelly going to be for you or not, but I want
- 42:55to make sure you're ready. Let's pa, let's rhyme. Let's goo to
- 42:59Dan. Dan, you're on with the mayor. Go ahead, good morning.
- 43:01I appreciate you're taking my call. Thank you, Mayor. You and
- 43:07I had a phone conversation on this show back before the first Regatta that you
- 43:12guys decided to do. I asked about doing the regatta river swim. You
- 43:16put me in touch with a lady who told me that the Regatta river swim
- 43:22wasn't going to be done the first year, but it would be done the
- 43:25second year. I have since been in touch with your office and found out
- 43:30that the regatta river swim is not going to be done. I'm wondering why
- 43:35you decided not to do it and if you might do it next year.
- 43:38You know, I'm not sure that I knew it was not going to be
- 43:42done, or I'll say this at least, Dan, I wasn't involved in
- 43:45those conversations, but I'm happy to circle back and ask our team when I
- 43:52got back to the office why it wasn't happening. You didn't want me to
- 43:54swim in it, did you, Dan, Well, I thought about challenging
- 43:58into a ring, not swimming. I'll do a couple different races, but
- 44:04swimming. Swimming is not going to be one of them. I'm I don't
- 44:07know why you got that answer, Dan, I'm sure that. I mean,
- 44:08there's a work out, a commission. Maybe it was brought up at
- 44:12a commission that I couldn't attend. But I promise you this, I have
- 44:16folks listening. Our chief of staff, Matthew Sutton is listening this morning,
- 44:20and I'll ask him to follow up and get an answer. If you would
- 44:23consider doing it next year, I would greatly appreciate it. Yes, sir,
- 44:28row swim that's been really popular, Dan, so I get. I
- 44:30get why you're asking. Dan. We appreciate your phone call. I mean
- 44:34I got a text before we go to break says good morning day. Please
- 44:36ask Mayor if she would reach out to Barry Hills or Edgewood and had them
- 44:39since someone over to advise the city on how to repair and maintain the greens
- 44:43at Cato Park. I've already done it. I've done it right. Yeah,
- 44:46yeah, our team is learning. We have an amazing team at the
- 44:52City of Charleston, and these folks are not they're not greenskeepers. As a
- 44:57golfer myself, that is that's the challenge Dan, if you want to call
- 45:00back, I'll challenge you a whole for a whole butt um. That is
- 45:02my sport um when I'm not when I'm not working, that's what I like
- 45:08carrying the week at mayoring um. And so I get it, and I
- 45:12and I understand your frustration sometimes when the greens are a little too dry or
- 45:17uh, you know, there's not bermuda grass everywhere. So it's as you
- 45:21well know, if you're a golfer, you're asking for a reason. You
- 45:23know, the aeration of the greens and the type of grass that we have
- 45:27and fertilizing in water. It's a science, it's not it's just not something

- 48:52oh Jim. That thrills me. Well. I was. I was a
- 48:59very sick person and I appreciate everybody's prayers and everything like that. There was
- 49:07a few days that I was I was not myself. Uh. We love
- 49:15you, we worry about you. I love you too, and I want
- 49:20to I want to thank Themanda Bear on the air for her kind words.

- 49:35She's a wonderful person. So listen, you all carry on. Thank you
- 49:39very much, said glad to talk to you. And I'll be around definitely,
- 49:46will be at the Live on the Weather and also at the regard.
- 49:52I got to try to get me some beeds this year. I got your
- 50:00be GM. I appreciate it. Thanks a lot, Texas. My guess
- 50:02is the reason there's no regatta swim's liability seems pretty chancey. We're just kind
- 50:07of talking about Yeah, yeah, I mean it's very popular. We were
- 50:12talking about that in that small area, which is great, right guys.
- 50:15You know, but you've got hundreds of boats between Court and Capital literally,
- 50:22and so our police and fire during regatta on their boats are very busy trying
- 50:25to keep people away or watching. It's because during the regatta everybody enjoys the
- 50:30riverfront, which we love. But if you're out kayaking or a lot of
- 50:34people have and we have one you put on the back of your boat,
- 50:36it is like a little float. Throw your kids out there, they jump
- 50:38off of there. That it gets really dangerous when you've got boats and jet
- 50:42skis and foats flying by, so it's it's like a highway during regatta.
- 50:47But I appreciate the fact that folks want to enjoy the river, you know,
- 50:51swimming, kayaking, all the above. Tex says, while I realize
- 50:54this is not a city project, doesn't they ever have any insight as to
- 50:57the progress of the mccorkill Avenue rebuild. It seems this project is dragging along.
- 51:01Is it on schedule, behind schedule or where are we within now that's
- 51:05okay. I'm glad if it happens in the city of Charleston. By the
- 51:07way, it's a city interest, so yes, it's a mccork was a
- 51:09state road. A lot of folks don't know mccorkill state road, but it
- 51:12is. As a matter of fact, we met with the entire team.
- 51:15We had eleven people in a meeting week before last to ask the Department of
- 51:20Highways exactly that where are we, what's being done, and what are we
- 51:23doing moving forward. There's been some paving going on over the past week.
- 51:29I know this because our chief of staff lives in Kanal City and he sends
- 51:31me photos of kayhot photos like this is being done. This isn't being done.
- 51:38But remember the asphalt plants are just opening. We talked about this offline
- 51:43paving is starting in the city of Charleston here sooner rather than later, and
- 51:45so you'll see an uptech beek all right, May I appreciate it, and
- 51:49he's always a pleasure to have You didn't know that you're going to be asked
