Latest / Birdland Territory / O's begin critical homestand after TB series win
Transcript
- 0:07Speaker 1: For the Orioles close, but no Cigar or that four
- 0:10Speaker 1: game sweep man they got a few outs away from
- 0:13Speaker 1: possibly taking four at the trop would have been stunning.
- 0:17Speaker 1: As it is a really good series. It kind of
- 0:20Speaker 1: turned a lot of things around here in Birdland and
- 0:22Speaker 1: welcome in the latest edition of Birdland Territory with Steve
- 0:25Speaker 1: tim and Brad so guys. A seven to six loss
- 0:28Speaker 1: Monday Night at Tropicana Field and now comes a critical
- 0:33Speaker 1: homestand Yankees four to three rays for three starting out
- 0:39Speaker 1: to stretch, wondering can they have a winning record? I
- 0:41Speaker 1: think now it's more possible than maybe we thought at
- 0:44Speaker 1: the beginning because of this series. What are your guys'
- 0:47Speaker 1: thoughts on the week ahead in Birdland at Camden Yards.
- 0:52Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 0:52Speaker 3: To me, it's it's exciting watching this offense now.
- 0:55Speaker 2: I feel like this is the offense we've been finally
- 0:58Speaker 2: waiting to see run it all cylinder and just the
- 1:01Speaker 2: approaches the team has been making one through one through
- 1:03Speaker 2: nine in the lineup to me is extremely encouraging. It's
- 1:07Speaker 2: everyone's getting involved and everybody's just having really solid at bats.
- 1:11Speaker 2: It's making it really difficult for that Tampa Bay rape
- 1:14Speaker 2: pitching staff is really good, and they made them work
- 1:16Speaker 2: the entire series and struggle for those four games. Like
- 1:20Speaker 2: we said, unfortunately they didn't get it done yesterday. But
- 1:23Speaker 2: it's very very encouraging watching what this offense is doing.
- 1:26Speaker 2: And for me, the biggest thing moving forward is what
- 1:28Speaker 2: we kind of talked about all year. Can they keep
- 1:30Speaker 2: the momentum going and they're going back home, it's going
- 1:33Speaker 2: to be probably a good crowd, especially against the Yankees,
- 1:36Speaker 2: and then you figured this weekend if they're able to
- 1:38Speaker 2: have a good series against the Yankees.
- 1:39Speaker 3: So just a lot of positives in my mind looking
- 1:42Speaker 3: forward for this team.
- 1:43Speaker 2: And it's I feel like the most positive it's been
- 1:46Speaker 2: for the last i'd say six weeks or so.
- 1:47Speaker 3: It's just been has been really consistent baseball.
- 1:51Speaker 4: Yeah, I think you have to look at this from
- 1:53Speaker 4: a glass half full perspective.
- 1:55Speaker 5: Like last night was disappointing.
- 1:56Speaker 4: You were up two runs late in the game and
- 1:59Speaker 4: you long, but he took three or four at the
- 2:02Speaker 4: trop which everyone would have signed up for heading into
- 2:06Speaker 4: that series, with how hot this race team is, with
- 2:08Speaker 4: how great of a home team they are.
- 2:11Speaker 5: But Brad, I'm with you.
- 2:13Speaker 4: I think my biggest reason for optimism right now is
- 2:16Speaker 4: this offense. And you can go back their last eight games,
- 2:20Speaker 4: they've scored fifty one runs. And I think the biggest
- 2:24Speaker 4: thing that sticks out to me about this offense, it's
- 2:28Speaker 4: not just one or two guys going right now. You
- 2:30Speaker 4: can go up and down this lineup guys Tyler O'Neill
- 2:34Speaker 4: for a while has been going. Jackson Holliday over his
- 2:37Speaker 4: last thirty three games is hitting over three hundred. Gunner Henderson,
- 2:41Speaker 4: the chase rate has gone down exponentially this month, and
- 2:45Speaker 4: he's producing. Pete is on an absolute tear. Pete is
- 2:49Speaker 4: just putting the team on his back right now, Christian
- 2:52Speaker 4: and Karnassi on strand what a godsend he's been. He
- 2:56Speaker 4: leads the team in RBI since getting called up in
- 2:58Speaker 4: the middle of July. So I think what has me
- 3:01Speaker 4: most excited is you got a handful of guys maybe
- 3:04Speaker 4: even more, that are all going at the same time
- 3:08Speaker 4: right now.
- 3:10Speaker 1: Yeah, and then you're right, that offense is clicking. And
- 3:13Speaker 1: there's the stat. You gave fifty one runs in eight games,
- 3:16Speaker 1: and during the previous seven games they scored eleven runs.
- 3:22Speaker 1: In those seven games, they were three for twenty five
- 3:25Speaker 1: with runs in scoring position these seven they were twenty
- 3:30Speaker 1: one for sixty five, so you see both many more
- 3:34Speaker 1: hits and many more chances to have those hits. That
- 3:38Speaker 1: to me is the biggest thing here. Twenty five attempts
- 3:41Speaker 1: in seven games is not a lot. Sixty five and
- 3:44Speaker 1: seven games is more like it. And those clutch hits came,
- 3:47Speaker 1: especially that seven run inning the other night, so that
- 3:50Speaker 1: was big in Berdland. Like you said, Tim, a lot
- 3:52Speaker 1: of guys contributing. It's no shock to me that when
- 3:56Speaker 1: we've been waiting for Gunner and Pete to be going
- 3:58Speaker 1: together at the same time, this output happened. And I'm
- 4:01Speaker 1: not saying it's only then, because clearly it's much more
- 4:04Speaker 1: than them, but a big run for this team. Maybe
- 4:08Speaker 1: we're finally going to see the hitting and the pitching
- 4:10Speaker 1: come together.
- 4:13Speaker 2: Yeah, that would be awesome. And I think when you
- 4:15Speaker 2: talk about Pete and Gunn are going together, I think
- 4:18Speaker 2: it takes a lot of pressure off of everybody else.
- 4:20Speaker 2: You don't have to do as much, just kind of
- 4:22Speaker 2: get on base and let those guys drive you in.
- 4:24Speaker 3: And that's really what I'm seeing.
- 4:25Speaker 2: I think that's been the biggest difference watching the approach
- 4:28Speaker 2: they've had with runners in scoring position, is they're just
- 4:31Speaker 2: trying not to do too much. They're trying to move
- 4:33Speaker 2: guys over, they're trying to hit the ball the other way.
- 4:35Speaker 2: I really have seen a middle of the field approach,
- 4:38Speaker 2: and I know as a for like as a pitcher,
- 4:40Speaker 2: those are the worst approaches that you want to face
- 4:43Speaker 2: because you want to have guys that are trying to
- 4:44Speaker 2: hit the ball out of the yard pull the ball
- 4:46Speaker 2: because then they have holes when you're trying to keep
- 4:48Speaker 2: the ball up the middle and stay you know, up
- 4:51Speaker 2: the middle or opposite field. Those are their bats become
- 4:54Speaker 2: really tough, especially with runners in scoring position. And they
- 4:56Speaker 2: just did a great job with that this entire series,
- 4:58Speaker 2: and even in Minnesota they did a great job with it.
- 5:00Speaker 3: Also. It just makes it really difficult.
- 5:03Speaker 2: To get that third out when you're trying to get
- 5:04Speaker 2: out of innings without letting up runs.
- 5:07Speaker 4: And it has to give the pitchers so much more
- 5:10Speaker 4: confidence because it's only human nature to think the prior
- 5:14Speaker 4: seven game stretch that you were talking about, Steve, where
- 5:16Speaker 4: you score eleven runs, if your pitcher, I gotta be perfect.
- 5:19Speaker 4: If I make one mistake, I might end up losing.
- 5:22Speaker 4: And that happened the night in Arlington with Shane Bonds
- 5:26Speaker 4: when he went eight innings, he gave up the two
- 5:28Speaker 4: run omer and he took the loss because of it.
- 5:31Speaker 4: Where now this offense is producing and the offense is
- 5:34Speaker 4: giving themselves a ton of chances. Steve the graphic you
- 5:38Speaker 4: flashed up there, twenty one hits with runners in scoring
- 5:42Speaker 4: position where they had twenty five chances in the prior
- 5:46Speaker 4: Sex Games, they almost have as many hits as they
- 5:49Speaker 4: had chances, very similar sample size. So I think that's
- 5:55Speaker 4: a testament to this offense right now.
- 5:58Speaker 1: So the Aros went three in the series against the Race.
- 6:01Speaker 1: They went five and five on that road trip which
- 6:04Speaker 1: started poorly and finished well. They are seven and six
- 6:08Speaker 1: since the trade deadline and they begin today this homestand
- 6:12Speaker 1: starting at Camden Yard to night against the Yankees, tied
- 6:15Speaker 1: for the wild card lead, a third wild card in
- 6:19Speaker 1: the American League. So this race is going to be interesting.
- 6:22Speaker 1: The Euros finally caught other teams and now we see
- 6:25Speaker 1: if they can surpass them and keep it going. So
- 6:29Speaker 1: we got a lot to do today on the show.
- 6:31Speaker 1: We're going to touch on some of the pitchers struggling
- 6:34Speaker 1: a little bit. What's up with that. We'll check in
- 6:36Speaker 1: on that in a minute and more as we roll
- 6:39Speaker 1: on on Birdland Territory.
- 6:41Speaker 6: Hey, for those of you that are on your phone,
- 6:43Speaker 6: it's very often, or even if you don't use it much,
- 6:46Speaker 6: you should check out your wireless bill and make sure
- 6:48Speaker 6: that it is treating you well. It's summertime. You're feeling good, right,
- 6:52Speaker 6: aj But are you spending too much on your wireless bill?
- 6:55Speaker 6: And should mint mobile get involved?
- 6:58Speaker 7: Someone that has two college aged kids got they are
- 7:00Speaker 7: always on their phone, whether it's they're checking their snap,
- 7:02Speaker 7: they're checking their DMS, they're checking their Twitter. I need
- 7:06Speaker 7: fifteen dollars a month because I need unlimited quality coverage
- 7:09Speaker 7: that mintmobile provides.
- 7:10Speaker 6: They get that new wireless plan for just fifteen bucks

- 7:40Speaker 1: Com Burdland Territory. Continuing on the show today, here is
- 7:45Speaker 1: an interesting stat and I don't think a lot of
- 7:47Speaker 1: people realize this stat. Against the current AL Division leaders,
- 7:52Speaker 1: the Orils are six and four versus Tampa, four and
- 7:56Speaker 1: two versus the White Sox, five and one against Houston,
- 8:01Speaker 1: they have a six eighty two winning percentage against American
- 8:05Speaker 1: League Division leaders. And oh, by the way, they have
- 8:08Speaker 1: swept each one of those three teams this year. They
- 8:13Speaker 1: almost had two sweeps against Tampa. I don't know what
- 8:16Speaker 1: to make of that. It's crazy because then the other
- 8:19Speaker 1: question comes, well, how they have such a more record. Well,
- 8:22Speaker 1: they have their six games under against the National League,
- 8:25Speaker 1: or two and five against the Yankees, or one three
- 8:27Speaker 1: against Cleveland. You can see how the math works. But
- 8:30Speaker 1: this is a little surprising to me.
- 8:33Speaker 3: Yeah, definitely they have a winning.
- 8:35Speaker 1: Record against these teams, but look how good it is.
- 8:38Speaker 2: Yeah, that is a very honestly surprising stat that when
- 8:41Speaker 2: you would think if you're fifteen and seven against those
- 8:44Speaker 2: three teams you have up on the screen, I mean,
- 8:46Speaker 2: you'd be well above five hundred, or at least above
- 8:49Speaker 2: five hundred, and they're still struggling to get above five hundred.
- 8:52Speaker 3: So it's just interesting.
- 8:53Speaker 2: It goes to show that it's the major leagues and
- 8:56Speaker 2: every single game counts exactly the same, and it's at
- 8:59Speaker 2: the end of the year, it's not who you beat,
- 9:01Speaker 2: it's how many times you win. So it's just it
- 9:04Speaker 2: goes to show about the marathon of the season and
- 9:06Speaker 2: it's all coming down to these last thirty something games
- 9:09Speaker 2: they have left, and you just got to hope that
- 9:11Speaker 2: they can continue. They're gonna be playing some of the
- 9:13Speaker 2: better teams in baseball and nationally again American League here
- 9:16Speaker 2: moving forward, So you just got to continue to play
- 9:18Speaker 2: good baseball against no matter who you're playing, and give
- 9:20Speaker 2: yourself a chance to get into this playoff mix.
- 9:24Speaker 4: Steve adding another stat that makes no sense, and that's
- 9:27Speaker 4: that's crazy. But the Orioles have a winning record against
- 9:32Speaker 4: teams above five hundred. So what that means is they
- 9:35Speaker 4: have a losing record against losing teams.
- 9:39Speaker 5: Which is total Bizarro Land.
- 9:42Speaker 4: But Steve, you pointed that out so many times throughout
- 9:45Speaker 4: these episodes, where you know what this Orioles team is
- 9:49Speaker 4: capable of because they've beaten all of these top teams.
- 9:53Speaker 4: They just took three or four against the Rays, who
- 9:55Speaker 4: had the best record in baseball heading into that. They
- 9:57Speaker 4: won their last series against the Yankees, a series in
- 10:01Speaker 4: LA against the Dodgers, should have swept that series. They've
- 10:05Speaker 4: beaten a lot of these top teams, and obviously the
- 10:07Speaker 4: record against teams above five hundred indicate that.
- 10:12Speaker 1: And over the years, when the Oils are floundering and
- 10:14Speaker 1: they won some games, fans would always come back with,
- 10:17Speaker 1: yet beat somebody good, and now I'll get my attention.
- 10:19Speaker 1: Well they have. They have done that. That's the point,
- 10:23Speaker 1: and that's the point we've made on the show a
- 10:24Speaker 1: couple times this year, is look at what the potential is.
- 10:28Speaker 1: If you're beating some of these teams, you have the
- 10:30Speaker 1: potential to do it more often. So maybe we're finally
- 10:34Speaker 1: going to see it. So that brings us to this
- 10:36Speaker 1: stat The Yankees took four straight from the Orioles earlier
- 10:41Speaker 1: this year by a thirty nine to ten score. The
- 10:44Speaker 1: Oriols did not have one lead in that four game series.
- 10:49Speaker 1: So not a couple week later, they came to Camden
- 10:52Speaker 1: Yards and the Oils won two out of three by
- 10:54Speaker 1: a twelve to eight score. Very different run scoring in
- 10:57Speaker 1: that second series. So they're two and five against the
- 11:00Speaker 1: Yankees and they're three and thirteen against the Yankees. Op,
- 11:04Speaker 1: so that hurts to say that one. So this is
- 11:06Speaker 1: a good time to show they can beat the Yankees.
- 11:10Speaker 1: They have a good chance. Jaron Judges not playing free,
- 11:14Speaker 1: just went on the injured list. Yes, Garrett Cole's going
- 11:17Speaker 1: to pitch for a Don's coming back apparently tonight tonight,
- 11:21Speaker 1: what better time to show you can beat the Yankees.
- 11:24Speaker 3: Yeah, completely agree, Steve.
- 11:25Speaker 2: I think right now is kind of a time you
- 11:27Speaker 2: want to face them without Judge and Daland's coming back.
- 11:30Speaker 2: But apparently he could have used one or two minor
- 11:32Speaker 2: league starts, but he wanted to come back to the
- 11:34Speaker 2: big league. So they're saying tonight they don't know what
- 11:36Speaker 2: his pitch count is going to be. To me, it's
- 11:38Speaker 2: it's a great opportunity at home to keep them momentum going,
- 11:42Speaker 2: like we've harped on over and over and maybe maybe
- 11:45Speaker 2: me almost too much at this point. But it just
- 11:47Speaker 2: really it just goes to show you just got to
- 11:49Speaker 2: especially against Indivision rivals, and when you're right there, you
- 11:52Speaker 2: control your own destiny. At this point, you're tied for
- 11:54Speaker 2: the wildcard. You just have to keep them momentum going,
- 11:57Speaker 2: get into this bullpen, get them in there early, and
- 12:00Speaker 2: really take advantage of kind of the Yankees team that
- 12:02Speaker 2: is kind of waiting for everybody to come back and
- 12:05Speaker 2: to get healthy. And I just feel like it's a
- 12:07Speaker 2: perfect opportunity to go and take at least two of
- 12:09Speaker 2: three and just keep this going and get ready to
- 12:12Speaker 2: play the Rays again this weekend coming up.
- 12:15Speaker 4: It is funny to say this with how it's been
- 12:19Speaker 4: the opposite all season long, Like I'm keeping an eye
- 12:22Speaker 4: on the pitching here. How are these guys going to
- 12:24Speaker 4: bounce back? Where Shane Boz He's coming off the shortest
- 12:28Speaker 4: outing of his season where he just went three innings,
- 12:31Speaker 4: and how's he going to respond tonight against the Yankees.
- 12:34Speaker 4: Bassett he did really well pitching around some traffic at
- 12:38Speaker 4: the trop over the weekend, going up against the Yankees,
- 12:41Speaker 4: a team he's done really well against throughout his career.
- 12:44Speaker 4: And then of course Bradish who talked about not having
- 12:47Speaker 4: his best command his last time out. This offense is
- 12:50Speaker 4: in a groove. It's kind of funny to say this.
- 12:53Speaker 4: I'm expecting them to hit this series, even with Rodan,
- 12:57Speaker 4: even with Cole, I'm expecting this offense to hit where Now,
- 13:01Speaker 4: if this pitching holds up their end of the bargain,
- 13:04Speaker 4: this team's going to have a really good shot at
- 13:06Speaker 4: winning this series against the Yankees.
- 13:09Speaker 1: On paper, Surprisingly, the Orioles runs per game outscore the Yankees,
- 13:14Speaker 1: believe it or not, over the full season. The pitching
- 13:16Speaker 1: is the disparity. The Yankees not only have the best
- 13:19Speaker 1: ERA in the American League, they have the best team
- 13:22Speaker 1: ERA in Major League Baseball three twenty six. They have
- 13:25Speaker 1: the best rotation ERA in Major League Baseball, second in bullpen.
- 13:30Speaker 1: So there you go, Tim got, you know, real test
- 13:33Speaker 1: for the offense if it's cooking as it has here,
- 13:36Speaker 1: eighty one runs the last fifty or what is it,
- 13:39Speaker 1: fifty one runs the last eight games.
- 13:41Speaker 4: Well, and Steve, you know, like we were saying, the
- 13:44Speaker 4: Rays had a heck of a pitching staff themselves and
- 13:46Speaker 4: they couldn't figure out this Orioles offense. So I think
- 13:49Speaker 4: you got to give the Os offense credit. You know,
- 13:52Speaker 4: it's not like they were beating up against the worst
- 13:54Speaker 4: team in baseball. It was quite the opposite over the weekend.
- 13:57Speaker 4: So I think this is another big test for them,
- 14:00Speaker 4: and I'm excited to see it because this team, we
- 14:05Speaker 4: said it someday like that, they seem like they're in
- 14:08Speaker 4: such a good headspace.
- 14:10Speaker 5: They seem like they're playing a really loose.
- 14:13Speaker 4: Brand of baseball where I don't know if we could
- 14:16Speaker 4: have said that a couple of weeks ago.
- 14:19Speaker 1: Yeah, that's interesting, and what makes that happen? I don't
- 14:22Speaker 1: think anybody in baseball knows the answer to that question.
- 14:26Speaker 2: Yeah, it's I've always heard the expression breeds success, breed success.
- 14:31Speaker 2: It's you can't put an equation to it. There's no
- 14:33Speaker 2: perfect science to it. It's just when everybody starts to
- 14:37Speaker 2: feel good, they start. I mean, they were borderline cocky
- 14:40Speaker 2: at times this series with some of the gestures they
- 14:42Speaker 2: were making towards after some home runs and Brian Baker
- 14:46Speaker 2: gave it back to him. So that'll be interesting to
- 14:47Speaker 2: see this weekend here at Camery Yards against the Rays again.
- 14:51Speaker 2: But this is a confident bunch right now, and I
- 14:53Speaker 2: just think it's kind of that cloud of the trade
- 14:56Speaker 2: deadline is finally gone, and I think that's moved on,
- 14:59Speaker 2: and everyb knows that there's gonna be nobody walking through
- 15:02Speaker 2: the door that's gonna, you know, come to this team
- 15:04Speaker 2: or is gonna be leaving. You still have Samuel Basil
- 15:06Speaker 2: that is going to be joining this offense here soon,
- 15:08Speaker 2: which is will be another boost and I'll be nice
- 15:11Speaker 2: to have back. So I just think it's a very
- 15:13Speaker 2: confident bunch right now, and I think I think they're
- 15:15Speaker 2: finally showing what they've always talked about all season about
- 15:18Speaker 2: how much confidence they have with each other, how much
- 15:20Speaker 2: they believe in one another.
- 15:21Speaker 3: Even last night when they.
- 15:22Speaker 2: Gave up that lead, I'm watching that game thinking they're
- 15:25Speaker 2: gonna score tw runs, They're gonna win this game. That
- 15:27Speaker 2: was just me as a former player, as a fan
- 15:29Speaker 2: watching that game. There's just something about this team. They
- 15:32Speaker 2: were one hit away from tying that game back up
- 15:34Speaker 2: and taking the lead. So for me, there's just a
- 15:37Speaker 2: different different confidence and a different way they seem to
- 15:40Speaker 2: be playing in the last especially the offense side of things,
- 15:43Speaker 2: in the last six to seven days, that just looks different.
- 15:46Speaker 4: And Steve also think about how Kevin Cash was managing
- 15:50Speaker 4: that game last night. Brian Baker, he's never gone more
- 15:53Speaker 4: than an inning. He had a five out save. He
- 15:57Speaker 4: knew how important it was to avoid being swept in
- 16:00Speaker 4: a four game set to where they put Baker out
- 16:03Speaker 4: there to close out the game with five outs to go.
- 16:08Speaker 1: Sounds crazy to say it, but his team in first
- 16:10Speaker 1: place needed to prove they could beat the Orioles. Yeah,
- 16:13Speaker 1: they lost sixth straight. They weren't scoring a lot of
- 16:15Speaker 1: runs against the Oriols, even I've scored two to one
- 16:18Speaker 1: in those games, and they kind of needed to secure
- 16:21Speaker 1: that win. And as you said, he almost managed that
- 16:23Speaker 1: like it was a game in October, and Brian Baker
- 16:26Speaker 1: came up big for him. The former Oriols having a
- 16:28Speaker 1: great year. All Right, we said we're gonna touch on pitching.

- 17:42Speaker 1: So Brandon Young started Monday night for the Oriols. He's
- 17:44Speaker 1: been so good this year, but recently he's been a
- 17:47Speaker 1: little more hittable. In his last four games. His THERA
- 17:51Speaker 1: is five forty, taking his season the RA up to
- 17:54Speaker 1: three fifty two, and he's had three or four outings
- 17:58Speaker 1: have been less than six for four plus five plus
- 18:02Speaker 1: something like that. So, Brad, there's been discussion about the
- 18:05Speaker 1: innings he's over at the most innings he's ever thrown
- 18:08Speaker 1: in his life. He also mentioned a finger issue after
- 18:12Speaker 1: the game last Night's first I've heard that, So maybe
- 18:15Speaker 1: one or both it's contributing to his performance being a
- 18:19Speaker 1: little less than recently.
- 18:21Speaker 2: Yeah, I think so. I think it's kind of it's
- 18:23Speaker 2: a mental hurdle. It's a physical hurdle to kind of
- 18:25Speaker 2: get over when you've thrown the most innings your entire
- 18:28Speaker 2: life in your career, doing it at the big league
- 18:30Speaker 2: level is tough. And he's been up there pretty much
- 18:33Speaker 2: since April or the end of April. I think he's
- 18:35Speaker 2: been up in the big leagues. And when you're pitching
- 18:37Speaker 2: that many innings for the first time, it's tough, no
- 18:39Speaker 2: matter who you are, no matter how good you are.
- 18:42Speaker 2: It's a definitely mental hurdle to get over to pitch
- 18:45Speaker 2: that long in the big leagues for an entire season
- 18:47Speaker 2: and sustain success. And he's been grinding these last three
- 18:50Speaker 2: or four or five outings he's had. It's been it's
- 18:52Speaker 2: been a grind. His pitch out has kind of gotten
- 18:54Speaker 2: up there, and I think he's just been kind of
- 18:56Speaker 2: I think he's held he's held it afloat. He hasn't
- 18:59Speaker 2: really Donkey hasn't had one of those really really bad outings,
- 19:02Speaker 2: But he also hasn't had the outings we've kind of
- 19:05Speaker 2: almost grown to expect, which is kind of crazy when
- 19:07Speaker 2: you think about it to the beginning of the season,
- 19:09Speaker 2: but you know, it could be one of those things
- 19:11Speaker 2: where it just takes these couple outings and then he
- 19:13Speaker 2: finds his footing again and kind of hits his second, third,
- 19:16Speaker 2: fourth win of the season and is able to carry
- 19:18Speaker 2: that through the end of the year. But it's definitely
- 19:20Speaker 2: a tough thing to go through and throw the most
- 19:22Speaker 2: amount of innings in your life, most of them at
- 19:24Speaker 2: the big league level for the first time.
- 19:26Speaker 4: Yeah, his career high was one hundred eleven in twenty
- 19:31Speaker 4: twenty four, then he threw ninety one last year. He's
- 19:33Speaker 4: already at one hundred and thirty four in a third
- 19:36Speaker 4: innings and Brad, you know a heck of a lot
- 19:39Speaker 4: more than me. But when I'm just looking at is
- 19:41Speaker 4: his monthly splits. The couple things stand out to me.
- 19:45Speaker 4: In the month of August, his four seam fastballs legitimately
- 19:49Speaker 4: one of the best fastballs in the majors. It's getting hit,
- 19:52Speaker 4: and it's getting hit hard. A three seventy batting average
- 19:55Speaker 4: with a six thirty slug. The other thing that really
- 19:58Speaker 4: stands out to me, we know at various points this
- 20:02Speaker 4: season he's really leaned into the splitter.
- 20:05Speaker 5: Yeah, I think he's lost confidence in the splitter.
- 20:08Speaker 4: Where you look month over month, in July it was
- 20:12Speaker 4: the second most thrown pitch that he had and it
- 20:16Speaker 4: was hit three sixty that month. This month, Brad, he's
- 20:20Speaker 4: thrown at the least out of all of his pitches
- 20:23Speaker 4: and it's getting hit five hundred batting average off of that.
- 20:27Speaker 5: Are you seeing anything with this sequencing is pitching?
- 20:31Speaker 2: Yeah, I think it really is just kind of losing
- 20:33Speaker 2: confidence in a little bit. And I think the reason
- 20:35Speaker 2: it starts to hit so much better is when guys
- 20:38Speaker 2: can kind of it's almost like he's getting to predictable
- 20:42Speaker 2: counts when he's throwing it when he's either super ahead
- 20:45Speaker 2: or he's trying to get it to the wipeout pitch.
- 20:48Speaker 2: When your sequence in becomes a little predictable, that's when
- 20:51Speaker 2: I feel like the average is kind of boost off.
- 20:53Speaker 2: It's not like anything has changed a ton in his
- 20:56Speaker 2: you know, metrics or anything like that. I just think
- 20:58Speaker 2: it's more of not getting hitters counts. Like especially yesterday,
- 21:01Speaker 2: I feel like he was behind a lot of the
- 21:02Speaker 2: time and he's been throwing. Yesterday, I think he threw
- 21:05Speaker 2: like only thirty forty strikes. I think it was at
- 21:08Speaker 2: one point during the game. And when that starts happening,
- 21:10Speaker 2: it doesn't matter what you throw, guys are going to
- 21:12Speaker 2: start hitting it. And for me, when I think back
- 21:14Speaker 2: to the splitter, this is a new grip. This is
- 21:17Speaker 2: something that he's kind of changed a couple of months ago.
- 21:19Speaker 2: And when you start throwing a new pitch, you might
- 21:21Speaker 2: have it for a couple months, and all of a sudden,
- 21:23Speaker 2: it's like you have a couple outings then oh wow,
- 21:25Speaker 2: that didn't feel the same.
- 21:26Speaker 3: Maybe I should do this, Maybe I should do that.
- 21:29Speaker 2: They obviously have a lot of technology that can help
- 21:31Speaker 2: them get back to feeling more confident with it.
- 21:33Speaker 3: But when you lose feel for a.
- 21:34Speaker 2: Pitch and you don't have the confidence behind it, that's
- 21:37Speaker 2: really when stuff can go south. And I just I
- 21:40Speaker 2: hope you can just kind of get back into leaning
- 21:41Speaker 2: into the four seam and just locating it better. To me,
- 21:44Speaker 2: that's that that makes everything better for him, is when
- 21:46Speaker 2: he's able to locate the four seamer and then he
- 21:48Speaker 2: kind of pitched off of that. I know it's pitching
- 21:50Speaker 2: one on one, but that's really what you got to
- 21:52Speaker 2: lean onto when you when you're getting tired, when you
- 21:54Speaker 2: don't have your confidence, when things haven't been going right.
- 21:57Speaker 3: You just got to get back to the basics, almost Steve.
- 22:00Speaker 4: I know we always bring up the joke over one
- 22:03Speaker 4: pitch away, a couple pitches away from a good outing,
- 22:05Speaker 4: but this is something that we brought up a lot
- 22:08Speaker 4: with Trevor Rodgers when he was really going through his struggles.
- 22:12Speaker 4: Look at the three home runs that he gave up yesterday,
- 22:14Speaker 4: they were all with two strikes. Porge Mateo was down
- 22:18Speaker 4: two in the count. He ended up hitting that ball
- 22:21Speaker 4: out to take the lead. So you know, you put
- 22:23Speaker 4: away those guys, it's a much, much, much different ballgame
- 22:27Speaker 4: and start.
- 22:28Speaker 5: For Brandon Young, that.
- 22:29Speaker 1: Was one that was a one pitch away from a
- 22:32Speaker 1: big difference. Because Jorge Mateo, as we know Chase, is
- 22:35Speaker 1: a lot. When you have him o two, the last
- 22:39Speaker 1: pitch you want is a hanging breaking ball, anything else
- 22:43Speaker 1: down or up he might, he's gonna chase it and
- 22:45Speaker 1: strike out. He hung one right in his wheelhouse, the
- 22:49Speaker 1: one spot he couldn't throw it. So Brandon's has gone
- 22:52Speaker 1: from seldom missing his spot to more often missing his
- 22:55Speaker 1: spot and in some cases in a critical spot there
- 22:59Speaker 1: you lose by one. You gave up a two run
- 23:01Speaker 1: homeer and a hangar to Jorge, So you know he
- 23:04Speaker 1: would love to have that one back Berland Territory with
- 23:08Speaker 1: you today, We've got some final thoughts and some other
- 23:10Speaker 1: things to pass your way in just a.

- 23:26Speaker 8: right to your phone and never missed, which you missed?
- 23:29Speaker 8: One five seven the.
- 23:30Speaker 1: Fan, And I'm not sure what to make of you
- 23:35Speaker 1: near Canoe struggles either. This came out of nowhere. He
- 23:38Speaker 1: had a stretch where fifteen games coming into Tampa, he
- 23:42Speaker 1: gave up one earned run in thirteen and two thirds
- 23:44Speaker 1: he was rolling. So people are saying this morning he's
- 23:47Speaker 1: been struggling throughout the year. That is absolutely not correct.
- 23:51Speaker 1: His era was one ninety nine going into Campa Bay,
- 23:53Speaker 1: by the way, and in two outings he pitched a
- 23:56Speaker 1: combined two thirds one he didn't even get it out
- 23:59Speaker 1: and he gave up six runs, three runs twice, and
- 24:02Speaker 1: so I don't know what happened. He One remark he
- 24:06Speaker 1: made is he struggles against Tampa. Maybe that's what that
- 24:09Speaker 1: was as all it was. I don't know, but that
- 24:13Speaker 1: was kind of jarring to see him go from pitching
- 24:15Speaker 1: great to really struggling.
- 24:17Speaker 4: Well, I'll say this, I think it was Jacob Calvin
- 24:19Speaker 4: Meyer who tweeted out these numbers, Steve, he really struggles
- 24:23Speaker 4: against Tampa. Obviously, just this season alone, two innings, nine hits,
- 24:28Speaker 4: eight runs. But you look at the rest of his
- 24:32Speaker 4: career versus Tampa, he's got a six six four eer,
- 24:36Speaker 4: a one four to three whip and twenty and a
- 24:39Speaker 4: third career innings against the Rays. And whenever I see
- 24:43Speaker 4: some of these things, Brad, I always think back to
- 24:46Speaker 4: when we had Britain on a couple months ago, where
- 24:48Speaker 4: for whatever reason, sometimes particular guys, particular teams, for whatever reason,
- 24:54Speaker 4: just to have your number.
- 24:55Speaker 2: Yeah, it's and it's it's the most frustrating thing ever,
- 24:58Speaker 2: especially when it's you just a it's not one of
- 25:00Speaker 2: the four teams in division, because you know you have
- 25:02Speaker 2: to face them at least thirteen games this season, So
- 25:04Speaker 2: it's it is. It's just one of those things. I
- 25:06Speaker 2: think it's probably in his head at this point. I
- 25:08Speaker 2: think he just feels like he knows he struggles against
- 25:12Speaker 2: the Rays, and I think it's just getting out of
- 25:13Speaker 2: his head. But the one thing I noticed yesterday too
- 25:16Speaker 2: was that when he hit Yanni Diez on that two
- 25:18Speaker 2: seamer running in his hand was really getting on the
- 25:21Speaker 2: side of the baseball. And when yan Erko's at his best,
- 25:24Speaker 2: he is up to down. His sinker is a true
- 25:27Speaker 2: bottom out, almost like a split finger sinker. So he
- 25:29Speaker 2: throws his fastball that's ninety five ninety seven and he
- 25:32Speaker 2: goes straight north to south. Yesterday he had everything was
- 25:36Speaker 2: kind of running, and when it starts running like that,
- 25:38Speaker 2: it flattens out. It becomes way more hittable for these guys.
- 25:41Speaker 2: And I just think it's it's just a little bit
- 25:43Speaker 2: of a mechanics thing. He's got the mental side of things.
- 25:46Speaker 2: I don't pitch ball against Tampa on the back of
- 25:47Speaker 2: his mind, and then when you can't locate exactly everything
- 25:50Speaker 2: you want to do, it just becomes difficult. And you
- 25:53Speaker 2: when you are a sinkle baller and you're getting on
- 25:55Speaker 2: the side of pitches, everything just really becomes way more
- 25:59Speaker 2: east to west, and when you start doing that, it
- 26:01Speaker 2: just becomes easier to hit. And it's not like he's
- 26:03Speaker 2: getting crush around the field. It's not like he's given
- 26:05Speaker 2: up home runs. He had a ball that bounce right
- 26:07Speaker 2: from a home plate that unfortunately bounced over with their
- 26:09Speaker 2: basement's head yesterday.
- 26:10Speaker 3: But when you're a.
- 26:11Speaker 2: Sinkerballer, you live and die by the ground ball, and
- 26:13Speaker 2: unfortunately he just wasn't able to get the ground ball
- 26:16Speaker 2: that he needed yesterday. And they're just they see him well,
- 26:19Speaker 2: and I think their approach against him is really good.
- 26:22Speaker 2: It's kind of just see the ball up and just
- 26:24Speaker 2: kind of hit it where it's Pitcher're not gonna do
- 26:26Speaker 2: much damage with it, but just kind of see where
- 26:28Speaker 2: it's hit and go from there. And I think they
- 26:30Speaker 2: really do a good job one through nine in that
- 26:32Speaker 2: lineup just sticking to that approach against him.
- 26:36Speaker 1: So maybe euro Fans will hope it is about more
- 26:39Speaker 1: the opponent cano face than anything going on with him.
- 26:42Speaker 1: How here's this big series with the Yankees. They're gonna
- 26:46Speaker 1: need him in there somewhere, and do they Brad just
- 26:48Speaker 1: go right back to him in the same spot at
- 26:50Speaker 1: the same time when they need him.
- 26:52Speaker 2: I mean, I think Craig Alvern has just showing that
- 26:54Speaker 2: all year. It's kind of he's got his guys that
- 26:56Speaker 2: pitch late in the game. He doesn't really straight from
- 26:58Speaker 2: that much, but right now Am Sanders kind of seems
- 27:01Speaker 2: like he could step in and kind of push canoe
- 27:03Speaker 2: up just a little bit, get his feedback under him.
- 27:05Speaker 2: But I mean, the guy's a Swiss army knife. We
- 27:07Speaker 2: talked about him last outing and he has just been unbelievable. Yesterday,
- 27:11Speaker 2: I think that might have been the best outing we've
- 27:13Speaker 2: seen two just shut down innings right when they needed
- 27:15Speaker 2: it to get back in that game and take the lead.
- 27:17Speaker 2: And I just think he's done such a good job
- 27:19Speaker 2: and his stuff is it really good, And I think
- 27:22Speaker 2: they really found a gem in the rough there with him.
- 27:25Speaker 2: And I mean ninety seven ninety eight with his fastball,
- 27:27Speaker 2: a really really good change up that he started showing
- 27:30Speaker 2: yesterday a little bit more and then a wipe out slider.
- 27:32Speaker 2: And to me, when you have three league pitches as
- 27:34Speaker 2: a reliever. That's a huge weapon to have. And I
- 27:37Speaker 2: think him and Hoppy have really, really kind of shown
- 27:39Speaker 2: they can be used in bigger spots for this team
- 27:41Speaker 2: and really help out this bullpen.
- 27:44Speaker 4: Yeah, that's what I was gonna say, Brad, I mean
- 27:46Speaker 4: you think of and you can even throw Josh Walker
- 27:48Speaker 4: in there too. Where these unheralded guys, guys that have
- 27:53Speaker 4: bounced around the bit, they've stepped up since the trade deadline,
- 27:57Speaker 4: and given how Michaelay operated, we were wondering could they
- 28:01Speaker 4: add to this bullpen you end up subtracting trading Tyler
- 28:05Speaker 4: Wells to the rais.
- 28:06Speaker 5: You needed guys like this to step up, and so
- 28:09Speaker 5: far that trio has.
- 28:11Speaker 2: Yeah, and especially yesterday when it's great you brought up
- 28:14Speaker 2: Josh Harkers. I was gonna talk about him and his
- 28:16Speaker 2: outing yesterday that I feel like two months ago that
- 28:19Speaker 2: game gets out of hand, but now they are making
- 28:21Speaker 2: the pitches when they need to. The ground ball to
- 28:23Speaker 2: the gunner made a great play but kept it a
- 28:25Speaker 2: one run game. I feel like a couple of weeks
- 28:27Speaker 2: ago would have turned into a three, four, five run game.
- 28:30Speaker 2: And you kind of go, ah, that one got away
- 28:32Speaker 2: from us. But the bullpen has done a good job
- 28:34Speaker 2: of coming in putting out these fires, and they're really
- 28:37Speaker 2: just doing a good job of piecing it together. It's
- 28:38Speaker 2: not the same guy pitching every single inning. They're piecing
- 28:41Speaker 2: it together, right, And I think Craig Alvins is really
- 28:43Speaker 2: starting to find a rhythm with these guys.
- 28:45Speaker 3: To me, it's kind of up in the air, but
- 28:47Speaker 3: I know that's how baseball is now and how bullpens
- 28:49Speaker 3: are run.
- 28:49Speaker 2: They're finding the right spots for guys, and I just
- 28:51Speaker 2: think they're all kind of excelling in the right spots
- 28:54Speaker 2: when they're out there in the game whenever he puts
- 28:56Speaker 2: them out there.
- 28:59Speaker 1: Okay, Homer prediction, I've got the Oils taking two of
- 29:02Speaker 1: three from the Yankees, true to true to Steve's form.
- 29:06Speaker 1: How about the two of you.
- 29:07Speaker 2: No, I think so, Steve. I think they're they're really
- 29:10Speaker 2: I feel like they've turned a corner. I know We've
- 29:12Speaker 2: said this multiple times, but I really do feel like
- 29:14Speaker 2: they've turned a corner and they have confidence, which I
- 29:16Speaker 2: feel like we have not seen this team have in
- 29:18Speaker 2: quite some time. So I really think with the Yankees
- 29:21Speaker 2: kind of being on a little bit of a down
- 29:23Speaker 2: trajectory right now, kind of just in in waiting. I
- 29:26Speaker 2: think if you go out there tonight, you get the
- 29:27Speaker 2: first one, you have a good shot to get there
- 29:29Speaker 2: the second game, and then you gotta face Garrett Cole,
- 29:31Speaker 2: which you never know. With this offense right now, I
- 29:34Speaker 2: wouldn't put anything by them, So I like that prediction.
- 29:36Speaker 2: I think the two out of three sounds it sounds
- 29:38Speaker 2: good right now.
- 29:40Speaker 4: A lot's going to be determined in game one, then
- 29:43Speaker 4: captain obvious. Obviously you want to win game one of
- 29:46Speaker 4: the series every single time. But this seems like a
- 29:49Speaker 4: big spot for Shane bos if he can bounce back
- 29:52Speaker 4: because his prior started he went eight innings tour and runs.
- 29:55Speaker 4: If he can bounce back in rodme he has a
- 29:58Speaker 4: pitch with the Yankees June twenty eighth, So could the
- 30:02Speaker 4: O's be catching him in a good time.
- 30:03Speaker 5: This offense isn't a really good groove. If they could give.
- 30:07Speaker 4: Shamee Bo's run support again two straight starts, but this
- 30:10Speaker 4: time Bob holds up his end of the bargain, then
- 30:14Speaker 4: that puts you in an opportunity for success. Because you
- 30:18Speaker 4: look at Chris Bassett's numbers against the Yankees. He's been really,
- 30:21Speaker 4: really good throughout his career. Obviously, you miss Max Breed.
- 30:25Speaker 4: It gives you a real chance to take at a
- 30:27Speaker 4: minimum two a three.
- 30:29Speaker 1: If it comes down to the third and deciding game
- 30:32Speaker 1: on Thursday night. It's bradish and coal under now, so
- 30:36Speaker 1: that will be fun, all right, those fans, Thanks for
