- 0:00Speaker 1: Recent event in Cedar Rapids, I received overwhelmingly positive feedback
- 0:04Speaker 1: about the work that Doge is doing my entire philosophy.
- 0:08Speaker 1: I was also proud to vote for President Trump's One
- 0:10Speaker 1: Big Beautiful Bill last week. This is a generational investment.
- 0:17Speaker 2: Come right, hear that again. That is like the old
- 0:22Speaker 2: fashioned movies with a laugh track or a grown track. Okay,
- 0:26Speaker 2: let me hear it again.
- 0:29Speaker 1: At a recent event in Cedar Rapids, I received overwhelmingly
- 0:32Speaker 1: positive feedback about the work that Doge is doing. My
- 0:36Speaker 1: entire philosophy. I was also proud to vote for President
- 0:39Speaker 1: Trump's One Big Beautiful Bill last week. This is a
- 0:42Speaker 1: generational investment.
- 0:46Speaker 3: Because somewhere in the Hollywood Eddie, they're like, scrap our
- 0:49Speaker 3: grown track, we have something better. That was ruby read
- 0:53Speaker 3: deep red America. And that just ruby read deep red America.
- 0:57Speaker 3: That was ruby red, deep red.
- 1:00Speaker 2: And those were spontaneous groans when she said Doge and
- 1:05Speaker 2: big beautiful bill. And that was just a smidgew of it.
- 1:09Speaker 2: That was one little, little tiny section of a town
- 1:13Speaker 2: hall held there by Iowa Republican Congresswoman Ashley Hintson, reading
- 1:18Speaker 2: nervously from her notes, where she was forced to defend
- 1:22Speaker 2: Donald Trump's deeply unpopular policies and her own parties, and
- 1:27Speaker 2: her own role in capitulating to him, and Elon Musk,
- 1:30Speaker 2: who's so unpopular, decides to follow the one rule in
- 1:34Speaker 2: law in Washington, which is the amount of time a
- 1:36Speaker 2: person can serve as a special government employee, so he
- 1:39Speaker 2: could leave. After Republicans spent much of the first few
- 1:43Speaker 2: months of the Trump presidency dodging doing this at all,
- 1:46Speaker 2: having town halls specifically when they had to talk about
- 1:50Speaker 2: or defend the Doge cuts, they're now receiving the same
- 1:54Speaker 2: reception as they booked to tout Trump's big beautiful bill
- 1:59Speaker 2: that grown actually sound a little bit louder in Iowa.
- 2:02Speaker 2: Of course, that big, not so beautiful bill is going
- 2:05Speaker 2: to leave millions of Americans, including many of her own constituents,
- 2:09Speaker 2: I'm sure, without health insurance, while giving the richest people
- 2:14Speaker 2: in her district or in the country tax cuts. Joining
- 2:17Speaker 2: our conversation is managing editor of The Bulwark MSNBC contributor
- 2:22Speaker 2: Sam Stein. Eddie's still here. Sam. You can fool some
- 2:26Speaker 2: of the people, I guess some of the time, but
- 2:28Speaker 2: not all of the people all of the time. When
- 2:30Speaker 2: it comes to Doge and the big not so beautiful
- 2:33Speaker 2: tax bill.
- 2:35Speaker 4: Nicole, You don't think Elon Musk has deep reverence for
- 2:38Speaker 4: the Special Government Employees Act, And.
- 2:42Speaker 2: To me is like the funniest I haven't found anything
- 2:45Speaker 2: that Elon Musk has done particularly funny. It's so bad.
- 2:48Speaker 2: But the funniest thing ever is the cover story for
- 2:52Speaker 2: why he's leaving right Like, Oh, I.
- 2:54Speaker 4: Think no, I think he really respects that law specifically,
- 2:59Speaker 4: and all the other ones he's fine trampling over, but
- 3:02Speaker 4: that one has a really important for him. No, he's
- 3:06Speaker 4: deeply unpopular. I think that's it, and I think you
- 3:09Speaker 4: see the outcomes the byproducts of it in these town halls.
- 3:13Speaker 4: I mean, DOJE is a deeply unpopular initiative that the
- 3:16Speaker 4: administration put forward. Members of Congress are dealing with the
- 3:20Speaker 4: consequences back in their district.
- 3:21Speaker 3: Now.
- 3:22Speaker 4: It's kind of interesting because there's two simultaneous conversations happening.
- 3:26Speaker 4: One is a DC conversation and one is a back
- 3:28Speaker 4: home conversation in Washington, d C. All the members of
- 3:32Speaker 4: Congress are saying, you know what we really love, DOGE
- 3:34Speaker 4: send over a recisions package where we can codify everything
- 3:37Speaker 4: that they cut. We want to double down on it.
- 3:39Speaker 4: We love Elon, and they know Elon. They want him
- 3:42Speaker 4: to spend more money on Republican politics. But back home,
- 3:46Speaker 4: when they talk about the cuts, they are getting heckled.
- 3:49Speaker 4: There's groans in the audience. Some of the initiatives that
- 3:53Speaker 4: Elon has done, members of Congress have privately assured their
- 3:56Speaker 4: constituents that they're going to try to reverse. And that's
- 3:59Speaker 4: everything from cuts to VA to government services. And this
- 4:02Speaker 4: is not even Doge but in the big beautiful bill,
- 4:05Speaker 4: the cuts to Medicaid are deeply unpopular among Trump's people.
- 4:09Speaker 4: And we know this because people like Josh Holly, who
- 4:11Speaker 4: is a conservative conservative, is out there warning everyone that
- 4:17Speaker 4: this new coalition that Trump is trying to cobble together
- 4:20Speaker 4: will fracture if they go forward with these types of cuts.
- 4:23Speaker 4: So I'm not surprised to see members of Congress being
- 4:26Speaker 4: heckled back home. This is what happens when you reverse
- 4:29Speaker 4: your promises to these people that you will not touch Medicaid.
- 4:33Speaker 4: This is what's going to happen.
- 4:35Speaker 2: Sam, We've spent I think nine years wondering why the
- 4:39Speaker 2: sort of corruption and plain sight and Trump one point
- 4:42Speaker 2: zero by today's standards, it was sort of quaint. It
- 4:45Speaker 2: was the Trump International Hotel. Now it's a foreign trip
- 4:51Speaker 2: that's advanced not by White House advanced people exclusively, but
- 4:54Speaker 2: by his sons doing business deals and announcing hotels and
- 4:58Speaker 2: golf courses. I wonder for nine years when that corruption
- 5:03Speaker 2: out in the open catches up with Trump this scene,
- 5:08Speaker 2: Maybe wonder if perhaps it has.
- 5:10Speaker 5: Watch One of the things I'm really concerned about is
- 5:15Speaker 5: the corruption in Washington, and I think that it undermines
- 5:25Speaker 5: our faith in our government, and I think it undermines
- 5:28Speaker 5: our faith in representatives. In particular. I'm thinking about the
- 5:34Speaker 5: four hundred million dollar jet that was given to mister Trump.
- 5:38Speaker 5: I'm thinking about the mean coins and the dinner at
- 5:45Speaker 5: the White House. There's lots of reasons why somebody like
- 5:48Speaker 5: you might be silent. You might be scared to say something.
- 5:51Speaker 5: Could you help me understand why you are silent about
- 5:56Speaker 5: this corruption?
- 5:56Speaker 2: Well, it appears that have heard a lot of specifics
- 6:02Speaker 2: about again, Whichrum's done in public brazenly in two point zero.
- 6:07Speaker 4: Yeah, I think you're hitting an important point here, which
- 6:11Speaker 4: is when you keep saying in public, this is both
- 6:14Speaker 4: a shocking amount of corruption objectively speaking, things that he
- 6:18Speaker 4: is doing to profit off of the presidency have never
- 6:21Speaker 4: been done before. We've never seen a scope like this,
- 6:25Speaker 4: and it was scandalous, for instance, back in the Clinton
- 6:29Speaker 4: era when donors to his campaigns were getting access to
- 6:33Speaker 4: Lincoln bedroom. In this era, you get access to the
- 6:35Speaker 4: president when you buy his meme coin. That's going directly
- 6:38Speaker 4: to his profit, to his own profit. So it's a
- 6:41Speaker 4: different layer. But because it's happening out in the public,
- 6:45Speaker 4: my suspicion is that we've almost become oddly accustomed to it,
- 6:50Speaker 4: or calloused, and it doesn't have the sort of shock
- 6:54Speaker 4: value that comes when you unearth new levels of corruption. Now,
- 6:58Speaker 4: I will say the one caveat I have here, and
- 7:01Speaker 4: my colleague JVL is written about this lot too, is
- 7:04Speaker 4: the Katari airline story. Because I think for some people,
- 7:07Speaker 4: like you know, crypto meme coins, those are kind of
- 7:10Speaker 4: esoteric and hard to follow, and we might not understand them.
- 7:14Speaker 4: But on an intrinsic level, I think people do understand. Huh,
- 7:18Speaker 4: a foreign government is gifting a four hundred dollars jet
- 7:22Speaker 4: to the president and then he's going to be able
- 7:23Speaker 4: to just use it after he's in office or even
- 7:26Speaker 4: put it in his library. And now it turns out
- 7:28Speaker 4: that maybe they in fact weren't gifting it. Maybe in
- 7:30Speaker 4: fact he was shaking down the Kataris to get the jet,
- 7:34Speaker 4: or at least that's what is being surfaced from recent
- 7:37Speaker 4: reports that Qatar is saying they did not initiate the
- 7:40Speaker 4: transfer of this. And so I think that's a lot
- 7:42Speaker 4: more relatable for people, and they can say that doesn't
- 7:45Speaker 4: seem right, that seems totally unethical, and those types of
- 7:49Speaker 4: things can feed a culture of corruption type attack that
- 7:52Speaker 4: you know worked very well for Democrats in two thousand
- 7:54Speaker 4: and six for instance.
- 7:55Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, I think it's and it was a
- 7:57Speaker 2: four hundred million dollar playing a dollar playing, that would
- 8:00Speaker 2: be the legover.
- 8:01Speaker 4: That would have been like a very expensive toy for
- 8:04Speaker 4: the kids. But no four hundred million. Let me put million, okay,
