Latest / Early Edition with Ryan Bridge / Ryan Bridge: Why does no one like New Zealand?
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Why does no one like us New Zealand. Two numbers
- 0:03Speaker 1: out yesterday that prove this, one eighty seven percent. We're
- 0:07Speaker 1: still plateauing in the high eighties for tourism, that's on
- 0:10Speaker 1: pre COVID levels. And number two fifty five thousand for
- 0:13Speaker 1: the year to September that was our net migration loss
- 0:17Speaker 1: of New Zealand citizens, which is a new record. Not
- 0:21Speaker 1: only are we that unsexy to foreigners, they won't come
- 0:24Speaker 1: here and have a piece, but our own people are
- 0:27Speaker 1: off flirting up a storm with the likes of Australia.
- 0:29Speaker 1: And they're not even flirting. It's not a weekend fling.
- 0:32Speaker 1: They have left us. It's divorce. Sure, we're getting more
- 0:37Speaker 1: people in terms of overall migration, meaning an overall net
- 0:41Speaker 1: positive number. But next year, many economists predict, for the
- 0:43Speaker 1: first time in a long time, excluding COVID, we'll hit
- 0:46Speaker 1: net zero migration. And we need migrants to support our
- 0:49Speaker 1: economy here, and we need tourists to support our economy
- 0:52Speaker 1: here as well. So what's happened to us? Do we
- 0:55Speaker 1: stop brushing our hair and cleaning our teeth? Do we
- 0:57Speaker 1: look like some antipody and at the bottom of the
- 1:01Speaker 1: world That you'd rather skip over. The Aussies are rebounding
- 1:05Speaker 1: much better than us on tourism, and they're taking all
- 1:08Speaker 1: of our young workers. And you look at all the
- 1:10Speaker 1: places that are so overcrowded by tourists. They're introducing limits
- 1:15Speaker 1: in Florence. Just yesterday they announced that they're banning key
- 1:18Speaker 1: boxes to stop Airbnbs in their city. Rome, Amsterdam, Athens, Poquette,
- 1:23Speaker 1: just to name a few. They're all doing similar things.
- 1:25Speaker 1: Last year, we ranked one hundred and fifty seventh out
- 1:27Speaker 1: of one hundred and eighty countries on growth and things
- 1:31Speaker 1: haven't improved much there since we are a very expensive
- 1:35Speaker 1: place to come and we are at the bottom of
- 1:36Speaker 1: the world. The heart of the matter, though, is we've
- 1:39Speaker 1: lost a bit of our mojo. Apart from cutting spending
- 1:42Speaker 1: and focusing on the basics, which are important, what is
- 1:45Speaker 1: this country's big plan to grow our economic future and fortunes?
- 1:50Speaker 1: What industries are we targeting. Until we can answer that
- 1:54Speaker 1: big question, we'll still look a little bit ugly to
- 1:58Speaker 1: the rest of the world. For more from Early Edition
