Transcript
- 0:01Speaker 1: Welcome to Dirty Rush, the truth about sorority life with
- 0:04Speaker 1: your hosts, me, Gia Giudice, Daisy Kent, and Jennifer Fessler.
- 0:11Speaker 2: All right, guys, we're back. Sally Carson here with Hunter Hay.
- 0:15Speaker 2: Let's talk Rush Talk.
- 0:17Speaker 3: When did celebrities start making appearances at sorority houses? Okay,
- 0:21Speaker 3: Kata from Love Island surprised ASU's Delta Zeta during work week.
- 0:25Speaker 3: And last year, I remember when Alex Earl did this.
- 0:29Speaker 3: visited UT Austin, which is awesome. Would you pop up
- 0:34Speaker 3: at a house?
- 0:35Speaker 2: Abso-freaking-lutely. I would thrive there. I would get all those
- 0:39Speaker 2: girls just drunk with me if they're of age.
- 0:41Speaker 4: That would be front and center.
- 0:43Speaker 2: Yeah, I really would. And I saw Caleb.
- 0:46Speaker 3: He also did one, and all the girls were like,
- 0:49Speaker 3: I wonder if they pay him. I wonder if the girls,
- 0:52Speaker 3: the sorority, is paying for appearances.
- 0:54Speaker 2: Probably.
- 0:55Speaker 4: Oh, a thousand percent. A thousand percent.
- 0:58Speaker 1: Well.
- 0:59Speaker 2: I want to do it.
- 1:01Speaker 4: Like, I feel like Alex Earle, like she might have,
- 1:04Speaker 4: cause she was in a sorority, right?
- 1:05Speaker 3: So Alex Earle was a Zeta and then she dropped
- 1:08Speaker 3: before she got like involved, I guess.
- 1:12Speaker 2: I would love to know more about that.
- 1:13Speaker 1: Cause I was going to say like, maybe if there
- 1:15Speaker 1: was like some type of connection, then you would be like, okay,
- 1:18Speaker 1: like more inclined to like just go.
- 1:20Speaker 4: Oh hell no. She did not just go to that
- 1:22Speaker 4: for free.
- 1:23Speaker 3: Yeah. I feel like those are like the only type
- 1:25Speaker 3: of celebs that like Alex Earle, Going is iconic. Like
- 1:31Speaker 3: I would love for her.
- 1:33Speaker 2: I would be just on the floor. Also, I want
- 1:37Speaker 2: to be your friend. He's so hot.
- 1:39Speaker 4: I don't know this Caleb guy.
- 1:40Speaker 3: Yeah. Like we, we don't, we don't care about a
- 1:44Speaker 3: lot of like, there's like some people that would come
- 1:46Speaker 3: in and I'd be like, who are you?
- 1:48Speaker 4: I feel like regardless though, anybody like showing up to
- 1:50Speaker 4: a house, like it's kind of, okay. Do you know
- 1:52Speaker 4: who this is? Like the equivalent of actually during our
- 1:55Speaker 4: era was Waka Flocka.
- 1:59Speaker 3: That is like the last person I thought you were
- 2:01Speaker 3: going to say.
- 2:03Speaker 2: Waka Flocka.
- 2:04Speaker 4: No, Waka Flocka.
- 2:04Speaker 1: Was like notoriously at fraternity parties. Really?
- 2:08Speaker 4: Like notoriously.
- 2:10Speaker 1: Oh my God. Everywhere.
- 2:11Speaker 2: It was at Bama. But yeah, I guess we did have,
- 2:15Speaker 2: we did have people come. We had like.
- 2:17Speaker 4: Random, but it was more of the fraternities, less of
- 2:19Speaker 4: the sororities.
- 2:19Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 2:19Speaker 3: And they would pay for performances, not just for you
- 2:23Speaker 3: to come up and be like, what's up girls?
- 2:26Speaker 1: No.
- 2:26Speaker 2: That's crazy to me. Like, If we're going to pay you, like,
- 2:29Speaker 2: sing or something.
- 2:33Speaker 1: Sing.
- 2:33Speaker 3: Okay.
- 2:34Speaker 4: Literally do something.
- 2:37Speaker 2: Okay.
- 2:38Speaker 3: Our sorority recruitment video is basically commercials now. Texas A &
- 2:43Speaker 3: M' s Alpha Chi Omega reportedly brought in a full camera
- 2:48Speaker 3: crew for work week content instead of just filming on phones.
- 2:53Speaker 3: I mean, if they're getting paid for it, I understand
- 2:55Speaker 3: paying a camera crew.
- 2:56Speaker 2: So.
- 2:58Speaker 4: No, I do, too. I do, too. Because, like, why?
- 3:01Speaker 1: I don't know. Like, if you're trying to get, like,
- 3:04Speaker 1: a really quality video, like, obviously. I mean, like, an
- 3:07Speaker 1: iPhone 17, like, it kind of does the job. But, like,
- 3:09Speaker 1: at the same time. So, whenever I was in a sorority,
- 3:15Speaker 1: we did hire.
- 3:15Speaker 2: Oh, you did?
- 3:17Speaker 4: Like, not a camera crew, but, like, a cameraman.
- 3:19Speaker 2: I feel like we would just set up a tripod
- 3:21Speaker 2: or something.
- 3:22Speaker 4: But we also had, like, an iPhone 2. So, it was, like.
- 3:27Speaker 3: The iPhones have come a long way. If they're making
- 3:33Speaker 3: a lot of money making these videos, I can understand
- 3:35Speaker 3: the camera crew. If they're not, then I'm like, okay,
- 3:37Speaker 3: iPhones work just as good.
- 3:40Speaker 2: Truly.
- 3:40Speaker 4: No, I agree.
- 3:41Speaker 2: Honestly.
- 3:41Speaker 4: And it's the user. Maybe they just need better people
- 3:44Speaker 4: to like use the iPhone.
- 3:45Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 3:46Speaker 3: Do you think Southern sororities have more budget for social
- 3:49Speaker 3: media and recruitment? The South has always dominated Greek life
- 3:52Speaker 3: and now it's dominating rush talk too. And we both
- 3:55Speaker 3: went to South Carolina schools.
- 3:57Speaker 4: So, I mean, I think that's a given.
- 4:00Speaker 1: Like a lot of people, especially the Northeast, they don't
- 4:02Speaker 1: care about sorority life or fraternity.
- 4:05Speaker 3: My sorority fees were bigger than my tuition at freaking Alabama.
- 4:11Speaker 3: I was there the year before they rebuilt all the
- 4:15Speaker 3: houses and now they're like insane. So we were paying
- 4:20Speaker 3: basically for the renovation of the house. Yep.
- 4:23Speaker 2: And they were.
- 4:23Speaker 3: I mean, my sorority fees, I remember my dad not
- 4:27Speaker 3: being happy because they were a lot of money.
- 4:30Speaker 2: On top of out-of-state tuition. It was insane. But they
- 4:35Speaker 2: had a lot. I mean, they had a.
- 4:37Speaker 3: Lot of money.
- 4:38Speaker 4: It's actually crazy to me that they like... I don't know. But, like,
- 4:42Speaker 4: to your point of, like— Southern.
- 4:45Speaker 2: Like, why do we think it's Southern schools?
- 4:48Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 4:49Speaker 1: But my parents are both from the Northeast. And they, like, honestly,
- 4:52Speaker 1: they told me. They were like, you want to be
- 4:54Speaker 1: in a sorority? Like, that's kind of paying for your friends,
- 4:56Speaker 1: isn't it? But, like, they just didn't know.
- 4:58Speaker 2: Yeah. And I was like, no, no, no.
- 5:00Speaker 4: Like, it's a really big thing.
- 5:01Speaker 2: Like, believe me. It's just a Southern thing.
- 5:03Speaker 4: I was the first person in my, like, family lineage
- 5:07Speaker 4: to ever go Greek.
- 5:08Speaker 2: Ever.
- 5:08Speaker 4: Really?
- 5:09Speaker 3: Really. Yeah. I feel like it's just, yeah, she was Kayo.
- 5:13Speaker 3: My sisters were Kayo too at South Carolina.
- 5:15Speaker 2: No way.
- 5:16Speaker 4: So you were a legacy.
- 5:17Speaker 2: I broke the legacy.
- 5:19Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 5:19Speaker 2: Sorry, mom. Sorry, sisters.
- 5:21Speaker 4: I love Kayo.
- 5:22Speaker 2: I like Kayo too. I like their colors. Red and yellow.
- 5:25Speaker 4: I think red and yellow. You like red. I don't,
- 5:28Speaker 4: I think it's freaking cute.
- 5:30Speaker 2: It reminds me of Winnie the Pooh. Oh yeah.
- 5:32Speaker 3: Okay.
- 5:33Speaker 1: True.
- 5:34Speaker 2: You said McDonald's. I like McDonald's too. And Winnie the Pooh.
- 5:37Speaker 2: What's wrong with freaking yellow and red?
- 5:39Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 5:40Speaker 2: You know what?
- 5:41Speaker 4: You changed my mind.
- 5:43Speaker 3: Also, I think it's relatable to football, too. Like, football
- 5:48Speaker 3: is huge in the South. Yeah.
- 5:49Speaker 2: And not as big, yeah, other places.
- 5:52Speaker 1: And then it just bleeds over into places like College
- 5:54Speaker 1: of Charleston that don't have football teams.
- 5:57Speaker 3: Well, that's why I didn't even look at College of
- 6:00Speaker 3: Charleston to go there because of no football. Like that
- 6:04Speaker 3: just is like such a turnoff to me. And also
- 6:07Speaker 3: at Alabama, I was also turned off there by their
- 6:10Speaker 3: football because it was the year we were winning all
- 6:13Speaker 3: the time. And it was actually the year that Saban
- 6:15Speaker 3: got mad at the students for not showing up to
- 6:17Speaker 3: the football games because we just knew we were going
- 6:19Speaker 3: to win. But so that was annoying. And then also
- 6:23Speaker 3: the girls would dress in high heels and like the
- 6:26Speaker 3: color of the sort, like the sorority.
- 6:28Speaker 4: No, stop it.
- 6:29Speaker 3: And I was like, I need to be Indie frat
- 6:33Speaker 3: lots with jean shorts, cowboy boots, a four loco in
- 6:37Speaker 3: my freaking hand, and a cigarette. Like, I don't want
- 6:41Speaker 3: to participate in this anymore. So I transferred to South Carolina.
- 6:45Speaker 3: And that's what I do every football game.
- 6:47Speaker 4: And then she learned how to be a loser.
- 6:49Speaker 1: Yep.
- 6:50Speaker 3: And then I was just, you know, slamming twisted tees
- 6:54Speaker 3: in the frat lots.
- 6:56Speaker 1: No, honestly, one of my best memories was partying in
- 6:59Speaker 1: the frat lots.
- 7:00Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 7:02Speaker 4: I almost went there. I put down my deposit. Do
- 7:04Speaker 4: you know that?
- 7:05Speaker 2: No, I didn't. It was so fun.
- 7:07Speaker 1: I was like fully, fully equipped to go to USC.
- 7:11Speaker 1: And then I didn't end up.
- 7:13Speaker 2: All right.
- 7:14Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 7:14Speaker 2: Carolina.
- 7:15Speaker 4: Carolina.
- 7:16Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 7:16Speaker 4: Wait, we can't say that either. Cause that's like UNC.
- 7:19Speaker 2: South Carolina. South Carolina. Go Gamecocks.
- 7:21Speaker 4: So I almost went to South Carolina.
- 7:23Speaker 3: It's still, the frat lots are still fun. Like I
- 7:26Speaker 3: went this past football season and, I was with West.
- 7:30Speaker 4: Why were you in the frat lots?
- 7:32Speaker 3: Because West had.
- 7:34Speaker 2: A deal with Captain Morgan. Okay.
- 7:38Speaker 3: And the Captain Morgan boat ship thing was in the
- 7:43Speaker 3: frat lots. So we went over there and he was
- 7:46Speaker 3: like working it.
- 7:47Speaker 2: So we went over there.
- 7:48Speaker 3: Oh, fun.
- 7:48Speaker 2: But it was a damn good time.
- 7:52Speaker 3: Do you think active members feel pressured to post PR
- 7:56Speaker 3: hauls and daily output of the days during recruitment.
- 8:00Speaker 2: And would you hate this?
- 8:02Speaker 1: I mean, you would definitely feel some sort of pressure
- 8:06Speaker 1: to post for your PR.
- 8:09Speaker 4: I mean, that's kind of expected.
- 8:10Speaker 3: Yeah. I feel like I don't like to be- Not required,
- 8:14Speaker 3: but expected. I feel even pressured now a little bit.
- 8:20Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 8:20Speaker 2: Like sometimes- That's what I'm saying. But I feel like
- 8:24Speaker 2: it's fun too.
- 8:25Speaker 3: Yeah. Yeah.
- 8:26Speaker 2: I mean, if you're dressing up. And if you like the.
- 8:30Speaker 1: Product or whatever it is, it's like you want to
- 8:32Speaker 1: be like, no, I really like this. You want to
- 8:34Speaker 1: endorse it.
- 8:35Speaker 3: Yeah. And if it's easy, like you're dressing up anyways,
- 8:38Speaker 3: you have to go to Rush. Like you're doing it,
- 8:40Speaker 3: just put your camera up and film. I don't think
- 8:42Speaker 3: it's that much of an issue. But I also feel
- 8:46Speaker 3: like it's fine to be like, one day I don't
- 8:47Speaker 3: want to do this.
- 8:49Speaker 2: And you don't do it.
- 8:49Speaker 3: Like I don't feel like anyone should feel pressured. Just
- 8:52Speaker 3: don't take a brand deal if you don't want to
- 8:55Speaker 3: do it.
- 8:57Speaker 2: You know? Yeah.
- 8:58Speaker 1: Well, cause it's also different. Like if you're doing a
- 9:00Speaker 1: brand deal, then like you have to like, yeah.
- 9:04Speaker 2: Like fun.
- 9:05Speaker 4: Your PR that you get, which like.
- 9:06Speaker 2: I don't, I don't post all my PR that I get.
- 9:10Speaker 4: No, I don't.
- 9:11Speaker 1: And it's genuinely, it's not even like the fact of like, Oh,
- 9:14Speaker 1: like I don't endorse this brand. It's just like, I
- 9:16Speaker 1: genuinely forget or just like shove it away in my
- 9:19Speaker 1: closet or whatever.
- 9:20Speaker 3: And now I do feel like as a whole sorority,
- 9:25Speaker 3: I feel like there's more pressure in a whole like
- 9:28Speaker 3: house to post because they're competing with the other houses. Okay.
- 9:33Speaker 1: But I do have like, this is not, I'm not
- 9:36Speaker 1: asking the questions, but I do have a question for
- 9:38Speaker 1: you though. Do you think that people are rushing or
- 9:43Speaker 1: going through recruitment just to become influencers like as an opportunity?
- 9:47Speaker 2: Yeah, maybe.
- 9:49Speaker 4: Cause I definitely think so.
- 9:51Speaker 1: Yeah. I think people are taking this as an opportunity
- 9:54Speaker 1: to be like, oh, well, I have, you know, this
- 9:57Speaker 1: content to post. And then either, like, they don't have to, like, even,
- 10:02Speaker 1: you know, bid a house or whatever. Yeah.
- 10:05Speaker 4: But they gain all their followers.
- 10:06Speaker 3: I think it only works if you're, like, front and
- 10:08Speaker 3: center like these girls. Because when I go to, when
- 10:11Speaker 3: I see TikToks like that, I'm like, damn, she's really
- 10:13Speaker 3: pretty and she's really good at dancing. And then I'll
- 10:15Speaker 3: try to find her. to see her like style and stuff,
- 10:18Speaker 3: you know? So I feel like it only works. Like
- 10:20Speaker 3: if you're the girl that's snapping in the back, I
- 10:22Speaker 3: don't think you have much potential to rise, you know?
- 10:26Speaker 1: But what if the girl snapping in the back is
- 10:28Speaker 1: the one that's like, this is my prep round outfit.
- 10:32Speaker 4: This is my philanthropy outfit. You know, you don't know.
- 10:35Speaker 2: You never know. Cause I, I would be in the
- 10:37Speaker 2: back and I love making content, but whatever.
- 10:40Speaker 4: Um, okay.
- 10:42Speaker 3: Do you think a chapter that isn't traditionally a top
- 10:45Speaker 3: house is actually rebrands itself just by winning on Rush Talk.
- 10:50Speaker 2: Like, do you.
- 10:51Speaker 3: Think that the TikToks, if they're going viral on TikTok,
- 10:55Speaker 3: is that helping the like, not the top houses of
- 10:58Speaker 3: that campus? You know, like if you're not a top
- 11:01Speaker 3: house and you post a video and it goes viral
- 11:03Speaker 3: and your videos are freaking awesome.
- 11:06Speaker 2: Do you think that helps?
- 11:07Speaker 4: Oh, a million percent.
- 11:09Speaker 2: Yeah, I do too.
- 11:10Speaker 4: A million percent.
- 11:11Speaker 3: Because I'm sitting here watching great videos and I'm like,
- 11:14Speaker 3: I want to rush this.
- 11:16Speaker 4: That literally is marketing.
- 11:17Speaker 3: Can I go.
- 11:18Speaker 2: Back to school?
- 11:19Speaker 1: Hmm.
- 11:20Speaker 2: Anyone can go to college, right? I'll go get a
- 11:24Speaker 2: different degree. Is there an age limit on Rush?
- 11:30Speaker 4: Is there actually?
- 11:31Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 11:31Speaker 2: I need to know that. I actually... Wait, but once.
- 11:34Speaker 4: You pledge or whatever, you're a KDP for life, I'm
- 11:38Speaker 4: pretty sure.
- 11:38Speaker 2: I could be a house mom. I got excited.
- 11:58Speaker 3: Okay, work week used to mean practicing conversations, getting ready
- 12:01Speaker 3: for rush. Now it's coordinated outfits, themes, photo shoots, TikToks,
- 12:05Speaker 3: and sponsored events. If you were rushing today, would you
- 12:09Speaker 3: quit your house for this reason? Because it seems like
- 12:13Speaker 3: a lot. I think it seems more fun than when
- 12:15Speaker 3: we were.
- 12:16Speaker 4: I agree.
- 12:17Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 12:17Speaker 4: I think I would eat that up.
- 12:19Speaker 2: I think I would eat it up too.
- 12:21Speaker 3: Because not, we still, they still are in coordinating outfits
- 12:24Speaker 3: and that's what we did.
- 12:25Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 12:26Speaker 3: You know, there's still themes. We did that. We did
- 12:28Speaker 3: like Candyland, I remember. And then there's still photo shoots.
- 12:32Speaker 3: There's no TikToks and no sponsored events. But that's really
- 12:35Speaker 3: the only change. Just add a camera to what we're
- 12:38Speaker 3: already doing. I think it's more planned out, I think.
- 12:42Speaker 3: But I think I would thrive.
- 12:43Speaker 4: But that's more fun, in my opinion.
- 12:46Speaker 2: I agree. I'm like, I don't know.
- 12:48Speaker 4: I would much prefer that.
- 12:50Speaker 2: Yeah, and it's like.
- 12:51Speaker 1: And honestly, that would have maybe not made me skip
- 12:54Speaker 1: my recruitment. For my wisdom teeth removal that I said
- 12:58Speaker 1: was an emergency removal.
- 13:00Speaker 2: Oh my God. Yeah.
- 13:02Speaker 4: But I did it.
- 13:03Speaker 3: No, there would be no skipping. Especially like if you're
- 13:06Speaker 3: making videos that are going viral, that's fun.
- 13:08Speaker 2: That's fun.
- 13:09Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 13:09Speaker 2: Like if people are like loving it and like, I
- 13:11Speaker 2: don't know, it's fun.
- 13:13Speaker 4: Yeah, I agree.
- 13:14Speaker 3: Okay. We've already got major brands in like celebrity appearances
- 13:19Speaker 3: and full-blown professional productions on TikTok.
- 13:22Speaker 2: What's left?
- 13:24Speaker 3: Would you want your future daughter to rush... Oh, that's
- 13:27Speaker 3: a good question. Would you want your future daughter to
- 13:30Speaker 3: rush with a sorority rush culture like this? Yeah.
- 13:33Speaker 4: Why not?
- 13:34Speaker 2: I mean, if it makes her happy. Yeah. I want
- 13:38Speaker 2: to go with her. I would be like, you know,
- 13:42Speaker 2: filming her. You got it.
- 13:45Speaker 4: I'm like, I'm your, I'm your content manager actually.
- 13:48Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 13:48Speaker 2: Yeah. I would live vicariously through my daughter.
- 13:51Speaker 4: No, I agree with you though.
- 13:52Speaker 1: Like if that's like what she wanted, like I wouldn't
- 13:55Speaker 1: be like, Oh, you have to do it.
- 13:56Speaker 4: Be like a stage mom and be like, yeah.
- 13:59Speaker 3: And if it was like affecting her once she's like
- 14:01Speaker 3: going through it, cause rush does have a big effect
- 14:03Speaker 3: on some people like mental health wise, because I can't
- 14:06Speaker 3: imagine getting, you know, the rejection is terrible.
- 14:12Speaker 2: And there's some people that get dropped by everything.
- 14:15Speaker 3: My mom cried when I went to Alabama because rush
- 14:18Speaker 3: is so intense there. And I unfortunately was a very
- 14:22Speaker 3: bad student in high school and my grades were not
- 14:25Speaker 3: super great.
- 14:26Speaker 2: AKA why did not go to South Carolina? Very easy
- 14:28Speaker 2: school to get into. Did not get in.
- 14:30Speaker 3: I got into Alabama because anyone with a pulse gets
- 14:33Speaker 3: in there. And I, my mom was like, you're a
- 14:36Speaker 3: grade risk. You're not, they're going to, they only accept
- 14:38Speaker 3: one grade risk in these shorties. But I actually had
- 14:42Speaker 3: a really good rush. I was a great, I was
- 14:44Speaker 3: accepted as a great risk.
- 14:45Speaker 2: They didn't care.
- 14:46Speaker 1: That's the thing is like, but you're like a very
- 14:48Speaker 1: personable person and you're also like outgoing and fun and
- 14:52Speaker 1: cute and all these things.
- 14:54Speaker 4: And it's like, but it is intense. You're going to
- 14:57Speaker 4: do fine.
- 14:57Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 14:58Speaker 1: It is intense, but it's like, imagine somebody who maybe
- 15:01Speaker 1: not like, isn't as like outgoing or, you know, all
- 15:05Speaker 1: of these things like that could be detrimental to your
- 15:07Speaker 1: mental health.
- 15:08Speaker 2: Detrimental. Yeah.
