- 0:10And we're only going to be going through chapter
- 0:114, 1 through 6. Before we get started, let's
- 0:14pray. Father, I want to thank you so much that
- 0:17you are so good. Lord, I do praise you for this
- 0:21day that we celebrate moms. and how you have
- 0:28called us as your people to be a holy people.
- 0:33Lord, I do ask that you would bless the moms
- 0:36who have little ones and bless the moms who have
- 0:39lost sons and daughters. Bless the moms who have
- 0:48seen their kids grow and move out of the house
- 0:51and start their own families and bless the daughters
- 0:55who are now moms. And Lord, we ask for not only
- 1:01grace for moms to accomplish what you have called
- 1:04them to do, which is to lead the kids in righteousness,
- 1:08to learn of you, but that you would also bless
- 1:16them as they are a support and a partner in life
- 1:23to their husbands. We thank you and praise you
- 1:28for your goodness, for your wisdom. We thank
- 1:31you and praise you that you have knit together
- 1:35in this secret place children. And because of
- 1:39that, you have desire for godly offspring. And
- 1:45through your wisdom, you have done that through
- 1:46the womb of a woman. We do praise you and we
- 1:51thank you. We ask that you would give us your
- 1:54wisdom as we open up your word. In Jesus' name.
- 1:56Amen. So I'm going to read verse 1 through 6.
- 2:01Before I do 1 through 6, I'm going to particularly
- 2:03read 1 Peter 3 .18 because verse 1 through 6
- 2:08is really the continuation of what Peter is saying
- 2:12here. You guys know that Peter is writing a letter
- 2:17to the dispersed believers. Throughout the area.
- 2:21They have been dispersed due to heavy persecution.
- 2:24They're living in caves. And so Peter is really
- 2:29challenging them to live holy in a very difficult
- 2:35time. And in reality, I think it's kind of fitting
- 2:41for today, though. As we're going through this
- 2:45letter. Because we live in a very... depleted
- 2:50moral country. It is sad to see the post -Christian
- 2:58nation that we've become. And I can't help but
- 3:04think that there are several different things.
- 3:05One, the joy of, or not the joy, the absolute
- 3:15desire and excitement to lavish and debauchery.
- 3:20It's crazy. But it's also this missingness of
- 3:30holiness. Of what does it truly mean to be a
- 3:38believer? And then lastly, The reality of what
- 3:47is missing in the pulpit of the church today,
- 3:51which is chapter 5. So I'll just build on that
- 3:55as we move into chapter 5 two weeks from now.
- 4:01But it all really stems from this understanding
- 4:04of how I should be living out the glory of God
- 4:09and the holiness of God in my life. And this
- 4:11is really verse 1 through 6. So in chapter 3,
- 4:17verse 18, it says, For Christ also suffered once
- 4:20for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous,
- 4:22that he might bring us to God, being put to death
- 4:27in the flesh and made alive in the Spirit. So
- 4:32Christ suffered once for sin, the unrighteous
- 4:39for the righteous. And as we get into chapter
- 4:444, 1 through 6, I'm going to read these verses.
- 4:47And I want you to kind of pay attention. Hear
- 4:49how Peter is really pulling us in this direction.
- 5:11for the rest of the time in the flesh, no longer
- 5:15for human passions, but for the will of God.
- 5:19For the time that is past suffices for doing
- 5:22what the Gentiles want to do, living in sensuality
- 5:25and passions, drunkenness, orgies, drinking parties,
- 5:28and lawless idolatry. With respect to this, they
- 5:34are surprised when you do not join them in the
- 5:36same flood of debauchery. They malign you. But
- 5:43they will give an account to him who is ready
- 5:46to judge the living and the dead. For this is
- 5:49why the gospel was preached even to those who
- 5:52are dead, that though judged in the flesh the
- 5:57way people are, they might live in the spirit
- 6:00the way God does. So as we're reading this, there's
- 6:04some things you're like, what does he mean by
- 6:06preaching even to those who are dead? We will
- 6:10address that. First principle, I hear a bird.
- 6:20I'll take it. I'll take it. But it's definitely
- 6:22a phone issue. How can we who died to sin still
- 6:29live in it? Do you not know that all of us who
- 6:32have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized
- 6:35into his death? Romans 6, 2 -3. That's principle
- 6:39number one. We were baptized into Christ's death.
- 6:45We were buried with him. And if we have been
- 6:49put to death in Christ, our sinful nature has
- 6:53been put to death in Christ, then why should
- 6:55we live in sin? It's really the question. Romans
- 7:006, 5, it says, for if we have been united with
- 7:03him in a death like his, we shall certainly be
- 7:06united with him in a resurrection like his. The
- 7:10fact that the perfect one, the holy one came,
- 7:12put on flesh, became sin for us as the scripture
- 7:20states. He who knew no sin became sin so that
- 7:23we might become the righteousness of God. And
- 7:27if our sin has been crucified and buried with
- 7:30him, why should we continue to live in it? That's
- 7:34really what he's saying here. So in 1 Peter 1
- 7:37and 2. 1 Peter 4, 1 and 2. Since therefore Christ
- 7:41suffered in the flesh, meaning bodily, arm, equip
- 7:46yourselves with the same way of thinking. And
- 7:53this word, same way of thinking, is thought or
- 7:57purpose. And that's an important understanding
- 8:05here. It's not that I think this way. It's that
- 8:10my purpose is this way. So if we have been, if
- 8:15Christ has suffered in the flesh, then we should
- 8:19equip ourselves with the same purpose. Whoever
- 8:24has suffered in the flesh has ceased from sin.
- 8:27What's the point of Christ's return? Why did
- 8:29Christ come the first time? To do away with sin.
- 8:33That was his purpose. He didn't think about it.
- 8:37He did it. So this idea of a way of thinking
- 8:41is, it's really the way of life. It's what I
- 8:46should be doing with my life. And he clarifies
- 8:51this thought by whoever has suffered in the flesh
- 8:54has ceased, has been released or to cause to
- 8:59stop from sin. And we know what this means. We
- 9:03get it because What we have read in the scripture
- 9:08is that we have been freed from sin. We're no
- 9:12longer slaves to sin. We have been released,
- 9:17not only of the debt of our sin, which is a debt
- 9:20we could not pay, but we also have been released
- 9:23from the slavery of sin. And that sin, Christ
- 9:29has caused us to come to a stop from sin. So
- 9:35why do I do the things I do not want to do, but
- 9:37the things I hate, I keep on doing? Yes, that
- 9:41does exist. But the reality is, we aren't mastered
- 9:47by sin anymore. Christ is our master. So in verse
- 9:532, it says, so as to live for the rest of the
- 9:59time in the body or in the flesh, no longer.
- 10:03Make a tea. Or make a tea is another way to say
- 10:09it. So as to live life for the rest of the time
- 10:14in the body, never again for human passions is
- 10:18really what this term means. It's not no longer.
- 10:21I think it could have been a little bit better
- 10:24of a translation in the English instead of no
- 10:28longer. How about never again? Never again implies
- 10:31some very important things here. That we are
- 10:36not to strive for human passion, for the desire
- 10:44for the forbidden. And we talked about the sacred
- 10:47last week. Do we really seek the sacred or do
- 10:53we seek the forbidden? And we can't help but
- 10:58look at what's happening in our world today and
- 11:00go, there are so many seeking the forbidden.
- 11:05Even among those who claim they seek the sacred.
- 11:13What is the sacred? The will of God. So let's
- 11:18clarify this a little bit simply. We must live
- 11:24the rest of our lives never again for the desires,
- 11:31for the forbidden, but for the will of God is
- 11:36really what Peter is saying here. What do we
- 11:43seek? What do we desire? What do we give our
- 11:46mind and time and money and effort to? There's
- 11:53not a call among the faithful brothers and sisters
- 11:57to obedience anymore. It's more about... God
- 12:05loves you and you have to have a wonderful relationship
- 12:07with him. But Jesus clarifies what that relationship
- 12:11requires. And this has been something we've been
- 12:14talking about for almost two years now. And there's
- 12:19no way to avoid it. It's on every page practically.
- 12:23Obedience is the key. Not that we obey in order
- 12:27to be saved, but we obey because we are saved.
- 12:31I want to obey you because I want to please you.
- 12:33You saved me. That's what I want to do for you.
- 12:37And that's exactly what Jesus says. If you love
- 12:39me, you will obey me. And you've heard this a
- 12:41lot. Being united with Christ demands that we
- 12:47live like him in holiness. If we are united with
- 12:52him, then we must live as he has lived. And we
- 12:57must walk as he has walked, as Peter said previously.
- 13:01In Ephesians 4, 20 through 24, but that is not
- 13:05the way you learned Christ, assuming that you
- 13:09have heard about him and were taught in him,
- 13:11as the truth is in Jesus, to put off the old
- 13:15self, which belongs to your former manner of
- 13:18life and is corrupt through deceitful desires,
- 13:21and to be renewed in the spirit of your minds.
- 13:26And put on the new self created after the likeness
- 13:30of God in true righteousness and holiness. There
- 13:33it is again. It does not matter how many places
- 13:36you turn. The reality of righteous and holy living
- 13:40requires obedient heart. And in 1 Peter 4, 3
- 13:45-6 it says, For the time that is past suffices
- 13:50for doing what the Gentiles want to do. And what
- 13:52he's saying is, eh. It is what it is with the
- 13:59pagans. Because that's really what the word term
- 14:01here, Gentile, can be Gentile, meaning of the
- 14:06nations, the ethos. Or the pagans, those who
- 14:11lived and worshipped false idols and did things
- 14:15that they shouldn't be doing within these temples
- 14:18of false idols. And that's what Peter is talking
- 14:20about here. For the time that has passed suffices
- 14:25for what the Gentiles want to do. They do what
- 14:28they do. Living. They perpetrate. That's what
- 14:34this word living means. It's not the word Zoe.
- 14:37It's not life. It's literally perpetrating. It's
- 14:41what they do. They perpetrate sensuality. And
- 14:45sensuality is debauchery. They perpetrate. Passions,
- 14:50meaning the desire for the forbidden. They perpetrate
- 14:52drunkenness. And that's just something that we
- 14:56must be mindful of as believers. It's not an
- 15:00option here. Orgies. Drinking parties. Now this
- 15:04is an interesting term. Because you think about
- 15:08drinking parties. I don't know why they would
- 15:09say drinking parties because drinking parties
- 15:11is part of carousing. It's just one way to carouse.
- 15:17Carousing would have probably been a much better
- 15:19term here. Because it's like, don't get drunk,
- 15:22but don't go to drinking parties. Or English.
- 15:28It's more carousing. And I can't help but think
- 15:31about carousing in our day. When we think about
- 15:38carousing, we think about the riots that happen
- 15:41throughout the cities. The noisy, obnoxious riots.
- 15:47For what? Living in such a way that you carouse
- 15:53and that you are noisy and obnoxious and you
- 15:56just want to create problems. Go to the mall.
- 16:00I guarantee you're going to see some 16, 17 year
- 16:05old loud and obnoxious. They just can't help
- 16:10themselves. That's what he means by carousing.
- 16:15And I'm not picking on teenagers just to pick
- 16:17on teenagers. I was one. I was a carouser. Not
- 16:24a good thing. And then you see this term and
- 16:28lawless idolatry. Now you would think lawless,
- 16:31which means lawlessness. And forgive the typo.
- 16:35It's supposed to be a K, not an H in wicked.
- 16:39Not witched. So I apologize about that. That's
- 16:45me typing. But really this idea of lawless idolatry
- 16:49means the wicked worship of false idols. Because
- 16:53that's what lawlessness means or lawless, to
- 16:56be wicked. And that's what Peter is saying here.
- 16:59Because if you understand why he's talking this
- 17:01way, the cities that some of the people were
- 17:04living in had pagan idol temples where they would
- 17:09go and they would do carousing. And orgies and
- 17:13all the other things they shouldn't do. So he's
- 17:16saying, don't be like them. In verse 4 he says,
- 17:21with respect to this. With respect to what? With
- 17:24respect to this list I just gave you. With respect
- 17:28to the way the pagans lived. And you used to
- 17:33live. Right? With respect to this, they are surprised.
- 17:38They're astonished. They're shocked. They think
- 17:42you're strange if you don't join them. Of course
- 17:46they're going to think you're crazy. Why? Because
- 17:50they're running headlong over a cliff and you're
- 17:54like, I'm not doing that. That's crazy. Like,
- 17:57come on. We're having a party. It's fun. And
- 18:03I know a couple of gentlemen that deal with this
- 18:06on a regular basis. This idea that these guys
- 18:11who call themselves men, who are actually little
- 18:14boys, act foolish and disrespectful and they
- 18:18talk nonsense and they talk about stuff they
- 18:19don't know and they act like they know everything
- 18:21and in reality they don't know nothing. Because
- 18:25they're just puffed up in pride and they just
- 18:28want to fulfill their desires. And that's what
- 18:31we see. And they're surprised that you don't
- 18:36join them. Like, why aren't you joining us? Why
- 18:38aren't you running with us? Why aren't you flocking
- 18:40together? After all, birds of a feather flock
- 18:43together is really what this means. I like this
- 18:50term here that he uses. Why aren't you joining
- 18:54them in the same flood of debauchery? Isn't that
- 19:00interesting? The word flood he uses here. It's
- 19:04really a tsunami is the idea, I think. But what's
- 19:09interesting about this word flood, it means a
- 19:11wide stream. Not a narrow stream, a wide stream.
- 19:17And we know what that is. Wide is the road that
- 19:21leads to destruction. And wide is the road and
- 19:23wide is the gate that leads to destruction. Many
- 19:25go thereof. And that's exactly what Peter is
- 19:27implying here. He knows that term because Jesus
- 19:30spoke that term to him. And he's really sharing
- 19:34the same thoughts. They think it's strange that
- 19:40you're not doing the same thing and joining them
- 19:43in the same wide stream of debaucherous living.
- 19:49So what do they do? They malign you or malign
- 19:52you. They insult you. They slander you. They
- 19:54defame you. They curse you. They make fun of
- 19:57you. But that's okay. Why? Verse 5, because they
- 20:03will give an account to him who is ready to judge
- 20:06the living and the dead. He is already on the
- 20:08throne. The judgment is going to come. He's ready.
- 20:15There's nothing that will hinder him from judging
- 20:17anything when he is ready. He is ready. And they
- 20:22will give an account. One way or another, they
- 20:24will give an account. Though the wicked prosper.
- 20:29They might seem like they're prospering now,
- 20:31but they will only prosper in this world that
- 20:34they live. And when they die, they realize how
- 20:36much their prosperity has brought them, especially
- 20:39to all our fun prosperity preachers. Listening
- 20:45to Justin Peters the other day, he's talking
- 20:49about a preacher who was bragging about people
- 20:53calling him up and giving him million -dollar
- 20:56checks. Interesting. Oh, brother, when you die,
- 21:04because you had not a heart of the gospel of
- 21:09Jesus Christ and the truth and the reality of
- 21:12the resurrected Savior, you are in so much trouble.
- 21:17I would not want to be that man. For this is
- 21:23why the gospel was preached. Why was the gospel
- 21:25preached? Because of the list. that he went through
- 21:28because they demand that you join them in debaucherous
- 21:35living. That's the reason why Christ came. He
- 21:39came to deal with sin, to wash away our sin,
- 21:43to take away our sin, to make us the righteousness
- 21:45of Christ before the Father. We are free, and
- 21:53this is important. And this is why he has commanded
- 21:57us in Matthew 18, Matthew 28, 19, and 20 to preach
- 22:02and to teach. This is why the gospel was preached
- 22:07even to those who are dead. Now, there's two
- 22:11thoughts on this. This could be what he was talking
- 22:16about in chapter 3 where he went and he spoke
- 22:20to the spirits of the time of Noah who were...
- 22:25Locked away in prison. Or he's talking about
- 22:28the walking dead. I lean a little bit more towards
- 22:32where. A lot more actually. I lean a lot more
- 22:36towards where. John Piper stands on this. And
- 22:40that is. Those who are dead are the walking dead.
- 22:43The ones who are dead in their trespasses and
- 22:45sins. That all of us at one time. did not know
- 22:51Christ were dead in our trespasses and sins.
- 22:54We did not have life. That though judged in the
- 23:01flesh, the way people are, they might live in
- 23:04the spirit the way God does. And I know that
- 23:10there's some debate among the theologians, our
- 23:14theologians in this area. But I can't help but
- 23:20think, That the ones who look at this particular
- 23:26scripture relate it very well to chapter 6 of
- 23:30Romans. That the reality of the gospel being
- 23:37preached, he preaches it to those who are on
- 23:43the earth dead in their trespasses and sins.
- 23:50So if you will, turn with me to Romans 6. And
- 24:01this fits so well in verses 1 through 6 of 1
- 24:04Peter chapter 4. We're only going to go through
- 24:101 through 11 in chapter 6. But pay attention
- 24:13to what Paul says here. What shall we say then?
- 24:18Are we to continue in sin that grace may abound?
- 24:24You guys know my... My coined phrase, grace is
- 24:29not the license to sin, but the power to do what
- 24:31is right. This is an important principle to understand.
- 24:38When grace abounds, it abounds to you that you
- 24:42may be obedient, not continue in sin so that
- 24:45you get more grace to be disobedient. By no means,
- 24:50verse 2, how can we who died to sin live in it?
- 24:57Do you hear that? If we have died to sin, as
- 25:03Peter states also in chapter 4, how can we continue
- 25:07to live in sin like the Gentiles in 1 Peter chapter
- 25:104? Do you not know that all of us who were baptized
- 25:16into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death?
- 25:19That baptism is not immersion into water, but
- 25:24really immersion into Christ. We were baptized
- 25:27into Christ Jesus. And if we were baptized into
- 25:34Christ Jesus, we were baptized into his death.
- 25:37And that the baptism of a believer, the picture
- 25:41of being crucified with Christ, being buried
- 25:45with him, is this association. We were buried,
- 25:51therefore, with him by baptism into death. By
- 25:56immersion into death. Did Christ die? Yes. Was
- 26:01he crucified on your behalf? Yes. Were you with
- 26:05him in his crucifixion as the scripture implies?
- 26:08Yes. Which means that you were buried with him.
- 26:14Through baptism into death. Through immersion
- 26:16into Christ. We are in him. He is our substitutionary
- 26:21atonement. That's what this means. Not that I
- 26:26personally, physically died. I am not the Savior.
- 26:30But he did it on my behalf, figuratively, that
- 26:34I am dead with him. And he raised me to new life,
- 26:37which we'll read in a minute. We were buried,
- 26:43therefore, with him by baptism into death in
- 26:46order that just as Christ was raised from the
- 26:49dead by the glory of God the Father, we too might
- 26:51walk in newness of life. So my association, my
- 26:59being into Christ, means I am associated with
- 27:08his death and his resurrection. For if we have
- 27:13been united with him in a death like his, we
- 27:17shall certainly be united with him in a resurrection
- 27:20like his. And he promises that, does he not?
- 27:23That we will receive. A body like his. 1 Thessalonians
- 27:31chapter 5 and 2 Thessalonians chapter 2. Let's
- 27:38keep reading. We know that our old self was crucified
- 27:43with him in order that the body of sin might
- 27:47be brought to nothing. Do you see that? So that
- 27:52we no longer So that we would no longer be slaves
- 27:56to sin. And there it is. Remember that release?
- 28:04The unshackling? There it is. To cause, to stop.
- 28:13Now, verse 8. If we have died with Christ, we
- 28:17believe that we will also live with him. We know
- 28:21that Christ, being raised from the dead, will
- 28:24never die again because death no longer has dominion
- 28:27over him. And death does not have dominion over
- 28:31you. That's why for the believer, when we no
- 28:35longer are animated, we sleep, the scripture
- 28:40says. He raises us from the grave out of our
- 28:47sleep, the scripture implies. And that term is
- 28:51interchangeable. So when we read it and we go,
- 28:55he raises us from the dead, that understanding
- 28:57for the believers, he awakens us. Remember what
- 29:03he said concerning Lazarus? He stinks. No. He
- 29:13will be alive. He's alive. Read that story. It's
- 29:19an amazing story. Verse 10, for the death he
- 29:24died, he died to sin once for all, but the life
- 29:27he lives, he lives to God. Do you see that? So
- 29:32if the death he died, he died to sin once for
- 29:35all, and the life he lives, he lives to God,
- 29:37and we have been crucified with Christ and buried
- 29:39with Christ and been raised with Christ, are
- 29:42you living to God? Are you living for yourself?
- 29:52So you also must consider yourselves dead to
- 29:56sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus. It's not
- 30:03by a coincidence or an accident that we are dead
- 30:15to sin and alive to Christ. My challenge to you
- 30:19is, Are you living that way? Father, I want to
- 30:26thank you so much for your goodness and your
- 30:28faithfulness. Thank you, Lord, for your word.
- 30:30Help us, Lord, to really walk in newness of life.
- 30:35I am so thankful for your people here in Mount
- 30:38Eaton and the consistency of their living. Continue
- 30:43to challenge us to become, to walk, not become,
- 30:49but be. the bright light on a hill. We do praise
- 30:56you and thank you for your faithfulness and your
- 30:58goodness. And we thank you that we have life
- 31:01and have it abundantly. And our abundance is
- 31:06not in the things of the earth, but in the righteousness
- 31:11of God. We thank you and we praise you. In Jesus'
- 31:15name, amen.
