- 0:00Hey everybody, this is your GM, your bad girl,
- 0:01Dominic's your GM, who currently is not on the
- 0:03team right now, but don't you worry about it.
- 0:04Kale, here to bring you episode 14 of the Stack
- 0:07and Shed series. Now, in this series, we're covering
- 0:09all 32 teams, so everybody gets a chance to be
- 0:12talked about, all right? Now, in this series,
- 0:14we're covering a few different topics, and they
- 0:15include what went wrong, what do they need, stack
- 0:19or shed, their draft picks, one move I would
- 0:23do in their cap space. Right now, in this episode,
- 0:25we're talking about the Bears. So buckle up,
- 0:27it's going to be controversial. All right, let's
- 0:37get into it. So what went wrong in the Bears
- 0:39season? And I will venture to say it was an inconsistent
- 0:41defense that relied solely on splash plays. With
- 0:45the hiring of Ben Johnson, I knew there was going
- 0:47to be a philosophical change with this team.
- 0:49And that philosophical change was going from
- 0:51a defensive -driven team to now an offensive
- 0:54-driven team. Whenever there's a change of this
- 0:57magnitude, that means there's also going to be
- 0:59a change on how they build the roster. And that's
- 1:01what we're seeing in this offseason. From releasing
- 1:04Tremaine Edmonds to letting Kevin Byard hit free
- 1:07agency, as well as Jaquan Brisker. we're seeing
- 1:10that the Bears are serious about building up
- 1:13this offense and trying to keep the defense as
- 1:16cheap as possible. Now, we can't say this is
- 1:18the right move or the wrong move yet because
- 1:20it's still too early in Ben Johnson's tenure
- 1:23with the Bears. But looking at this defense last
- 1:25year, it relied solely on interceptions. If they
- 1:29weren't getting a pick, if they weren't forcing
- 1:31a fumble, if they weren't doing anything that
- 1:33is quote -unquote splashy, this defense is not
- 1:36doing anything. And we have the stats to back
- 1:39it up. They had the 29th ranked defense and they
- 1:42allowed 24 .4 points per game, 361 .8 yards per
- 1:46game, 6 yards per play, and 47 touchdowns. They
- 1:50were 22nd in pass defense and they allowed 227
- 1:54.2 passing yards per game, 6 .8 passing yards
- 1:57per play, and 32 passing touchdowns. They were
- 2:0027th in run defense and they allowed 15 rushing
- 2:03touchdowns, 134 .5 rushing touchdowns, rushing
- 2:07yards per game, and five rushing yards per play.
- 2:09But here's some stats that show how much this
- 2:11Bears defense relied on interceptions. So in
- 2:14the 13 games that they had an interception, they
- 2:17allowed 4 ,469 yards, 4 .7 yards per play, while
- 2:22generating 27 sacks, 23 interceptions, nine forced
- 2:26fumbles, and eight fumble recoveries. In the
- 2:29four games the Bears defense didn't have an interception,
- 2:32they allowed 1 ,681 yards, 5 .4. yards per play
- 2:36while generating eight sacks, three forced fumbles,
- 2:40and two fumble recoveries. Now if we break this
- 2:42down even more, here's the Bears defensive stats
- 2:45per game with an interception. They allow 343
- 2:49.8 yards per game. 4 .7 yards per play while
- 2:53generating two sacks a game while generating
- 2:551 .7 interceptions per game. But when we look
- 2:58at the Bears defensive stats per game without
- 3:01an interception, this is what we have. They allowed
- 3:04420 .3 yards per game, 5 .4 yards per play while
- 3:09generating two sacks per game. Although certain
- 3:11players had a really good season, as a collective,
- 3:14they underperformed. Because as we saw in the
- 3:16regular season going into the playoffs, when
- 3:19this defense didn't get an interception, guess
- 3:22what happened? They wasn't stopping the run,
- 3:24they wasn't stopping explosive plays, they wasn't
- 3:27converting on third down, and they definitely
- 3:29wasn't creating constant pressure on quarterbacks.
- 3:31Now with that being said, what do the Bears need?
- 3:34And that is a fundamentally sound defense. Now
- 3:36this can be accomplished in a few different ways.
- 3:39For starters, the coaches can emphasize a more
- 3:41balanced approach. So instead of you emphasizing
- 3:43turnovers, you can emphasize just playing better
- 3:46ball as a whole. The pass rushers being more
- 3:49consistent. The linebackers being more consistent.
- 3:52The secondary being more consistent. Now, the
- 3:54result is that the defense is going to play so
- 3:56well that it's going to put added pressure on
- 3:58offensive coordinators to find the weak spots
- 4:00in this defense. Another approach is bringing
- 4:02more dynamic playmakers for that side of the
- 4:05ball. Sure, you have Kyler Gordon. Sure, you
- 4:07have Grady Jarrett and Montez Sweat and Jalen
- 4:09Johnson. But I think you need a little bit more.
- 4:12Now, this can be accomplished via free agency
- 4:14or in the draft. Now, with that being said, the
- 4:17question we all need to ask ourselves is stat.
- 4:19or shed and I will eventually say stack and the
- 4:21reason why I say that is because what you have
- 4:23right now is a great foundation in Ben Johnson
- 4:26and Caleb Williams and some pieces on that defense
- 4:29as long as you continue to build the right way
- 4:33you're going to be fine. But if you stir away
- 4:35from the current path that you're on right now,
- 4:37I guarantee you, you're going to fall right back
- 4:40into the same cycle of dysfunction that this
- 4:42Bears team has been in for the last 20 -some
- 4:45years. Now, in no way am I saying this Bears
- 4:48team is going to make it to the Super Bowl this
- 4:49upcoming season, but I do believe they are a
- 4:52playoff team. I will give them that. Looking
- 4:54at their draft picks, they have their first,
- 4:56two seconds, a third, a fourth, and two sevens.
- 4:59Now, I want to see what the Bears are going to
- 5:01do in the first round because they have the 25th
- 5:03pick. Now, I'm not saying it's a bad pick, but
- 5:06you are in a spot where at that point, one of
- 5:09two things are going to happen. Either the board
- 5:11is going to be devoid of the talent that you
- 5:13really want, or there's going to be so many teams
- 5:15that are going to trade down that's going to
- 5:16leave you in a messy spot. Because what we're
- 5:19seeing in this draft class is that there's an
- 5:20inflation of value at positions that the league
- 5:23has not valued in the past. Now, I want to see
- 5:26what side of the ball the Bears are going to
- 5:27address first, because I feel like the offense
- 5:30is in a really good spot, and any needs that
- 5:32are on that side of the ball, I feel like you
- 5:34can address that in the second and third round.
- 5:36Now, the one move that I would do is draft a
- 5:39defense. a player. Now I'm leaning towards an
- 5:41interior defensive lineman or maybe a pass rusher
- 5:44or maybe a linebacker. I don't really want to
- 5:48do anything with the secondary yet. I would rather
- 5:51wait to do that maybe in the second, third, or
- 5:53maybe fourth round because I feel like there's
- 5:55some hidden gems there. But my question is this,
- 5:57and I want to answer from the Bears fans on our
- 5:59YouTube page at Football Junkies Pod. Should
- 6:02the Bears emphasize the front seven? the linebacker
- 6:05core, or the secondary. Because I'm leaning towards
- 6:08addressing the interior defensive line or edge
- 6:10rusher. Because what we see in the league right
- 6:13now is that you either have a guy at interior
- 6:15defensive line or edge rusher, or you have a
- 6:17collective sort of like what the Seahawks have.
- 6:20Now, if you want to take the approach that the
- 6:21Eagles have, hey, go at it. But I think if you're
- 6:24the Bears, if you just build out this defensive
- 6:26line, I think it's really going to help out.
- 6:29Because you already have Grady Jarrett. You have
- 6:31Javon Dexter. You have Montez Sweat. Looking
- 6:34at their cap situation, they have a million dollars.
- 6:37Now the question is this, what are they gonna
- 6:38do to create some cap space so that they can
- 6:41sign all their draft picks and maybe be players
- 6:44in the second and third wave of free agency?
- 6:46My guess is that they're currently trying to
- 6:48restructure some deals right now to create some
- 6:50more cap space. Maybe they're gonna try to give
- 6:52some extensions. I don't know. Hopefully they
- 6:55figure it out because you can't have a million
- 6:57dollars going into the draft. You just cannot
- 6:59do that. You have to find a way to create some
- 7:01cap space. Even if it's just, five to six million
- 7:04that's perfectly fine but only time will tell
