- 0:02But a certain Samaritan as he journeyed came where he was and
- 0:06when he saw him he had compassion on him and went to
- 0:09him and bound up his wounds pouring in oil and wine and set
- 0:14him on his own beast and brought him to an inn and took care of
- 0:18him. Hey, listeners.
- 0:19This is Nick from scripture Central.
- 0:21And today's podcast addresses, the question, how does the
- 0:24parable of the Good Samaritan? Teach us about the Plan of
- 0:27Salvation One day, a certain lawyer sought to test Jesus and
- 0:33his teachings as he asked the Savior Master.
- 0:37What shall I do to inherit eternal life?
- 0:39Jesus is answer, was simple, utilizing the man's knowledge of
- 0:43the Old Testament scriptures to answer his own question.
- 0:46Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart and with all
- 0:49thy soul and with all thy strength.
- 0:52And with all thy mind, and thy neighbor as thyself, then in an
- 0:57attempt to justify himself, the lawyer further.
- 1:00Asked and who is my neighbor, the lawyers, to questions about
- 1:04the qualifications for eternal life.
- 1:06And the identity of one's neighbor are key to
- 1:09understanding the parable of the Good Samaritan actually
- 1:13answering both of these two questions Jesus then offered his
- 1:16most famous, Parable involving a man who while journeying from
- 1:20Jerusalem down to Jericho fell among robbers and was left for
- 1:24dead after a priest and levite passed by him without giving any
- 1:28Aid a certain Maraton came along poured on oil and wine and bound
- 1:33up. The man's wounds, took him to an
- 1:36inn and then generously offered to reward the host for his care.
- 1:40And lodging, after finishing, the story Jesus asked the
- 1:43lawyer, which of these characters was a neighbor to the
- 1:46injured, traveler the lawyer replied.
- 1:49He that sheweth Mercy on him, meaning the Samaritan, John and
- 1:53Jenni Welch of suggested that. In addition to, identifying the
- 1:57ideal qualities of a true neighbor, an answer to the
- 2:00Second question, this detailed Parable gives a summary of The
- 2:04Plan of Salvation from the wounded man's beginning, in a
- 2:07holy place to the promise of reward to The Innkeeper upon The
- 2:10Rescuers coming again early. Christian interpretations of
- 2:15this Parable likewise see in this Parable, a microcosm of the
- 2:18history of the Human family and the promised blessings given to
- 2:22the faithful through the healing powers of Jesus Christ and his
- 2:25atonement. Thus the writings of early
- 2:28church fathers such as Origen Clement of Alexandria and
- 2:32irenaeus can offer. Many important insights to
- 2:36modern Christian audiences. First the certain man who
- 2:39traveled from Jerusalem to Jericho was understood as
- 2:42representing. Adam, in addition to referring
- 2:45to Adam himself the word atom in Hebrew can also mean, man, or
- 2:50human kind. So the traveler can be seen as a
- 2:53dual representation of both Adam and humankind in general, as all
- 2:58of us at some point or another Find ourselves, spiritually
- 3:01wounded, and vulnerable. We all have come down as Adams
- 3:06and Eve's subject to the changes of mortality, right?
- 3:09The Welch's it is also noteworthy that the man went
- 3:13down from Jerusalem to Jericho such a shift from an elevated
- 3:17place of Glory Jerusalem to the lowest city on earth.
- 3:21Jericho is a fitting analogy for the fall of Adam and Eve
- 3:26concerning the similar dissent that we all take into mortality.
- 3:30Leti, John Welch, observes the language and Luke 10.
- 3:33Implies that the man goes down intentionally threw, his own
- 3:37volition, knowing the risks involved in the journey in the
- 3:41tail node forces. The man to go down to Jericho.
- 3:44And for whatever reason, the person apparently feels that the
- 3:47journey is worth the obvious risks of such travel which were
- 3:51well known to all people in Jesus day.
- 3:54The potential risk of the journey was made a reality when
- 3:57the man fell among Thieves, which stripped Tim of his
- 4:01raiment and wounded him and departed, leaving him half dead.
- 4:05Just as Adam and Eve could not redeem themselves after their
- 4:08fall. So, to was this man in a wounded
- 4:11and Fallen State unable to heal himself, or progress on his
- 4:15journey without Aid. He was, therefore, in dire need
- 4:19of a savior, as for the thieves, actually Bandits attacked, the
- 4:23man, they could be readily associated with the devil, his
- 4:27forces, evil spirits, or false. Hers.
- 4:31And in that sense, we all face various types of damaging
- 4:34thieves in our mortal Journey. While it might seem like the
- 4:37priest and levite should have rescued the man from the ravages
- 4:40of these Highway robbers. They nevertheless failed to do.
- 4:44So it was only the Samaritan who belonged to a group of people
- 4:48despised by most Jews during Jesus lifetime, that was willing
- 4:52and able to do so unsurprisingly.
- 4:55The Good Samaritan was seen by early Christians as a
- 4:58representation of Jesus Christ. Self, although despised by many
- 5:02of his own people. He is the only one truly capable
- 5:06of rescuing humankind from its Fallen condition.
- 5:10According to the Book of Mormon, Jesus offered an atonement for
- 5:13the sins of the world, because of his bowels of Mercy, being
- 5:17filled with compassion towards the children of men.
- 5:20As for the Good Samaritan, the Greek word literally says that
- 5:24the Samaritans bowels were moved with deep inner.
- 5:28Sympathy this word, Is used in the New Testament.
- 5:31Only would authors wish to describe God's Divine emotions
- 5:35of Mercy. As part of his ministering to
- 5:39the Fallen traveler, the Samaritan poured oil and Wine
- 5:43Into The Travelers wounds. This likely refers to olive oil
- 5:47which was used in the Holy anointing of Kings and Priests
- 5:50and also correlates to the reception of the Holy Ghost.
- 5:54The wind may represent the blood of Christ washing away sin and
- 5:58purifying the soul bringing healing peace Finally the
- 6:03Samaritan took the wounded man to an inn where he could receive
- 6:06additional care? Early Christians, saw this Final
- 6:09Act of love as Christ, bringing the wounded, soul to the holy
- 6:13church, where his disciples including The Innkeeper or head
- 6:17of the church could further, watch over and care for the
- 6:20individual as the Samaritan left.
- 6:23The next day, he promised to come back and pay the Innkeeper.
- 6:26Again. Employing a somewhat unique
- 6:29word, in the New Testament, that is found only here.
- 6:32And in Luke Chapter, 19, Verse 15 referring to the time when
- 6:36the Lord would return to judge the people likewise some day in
- 6:41the near. Future Christ will, again return
- 6:44to the world and judge how well his followers have attended to
- 6:47one another's, physical and spiritual needs, and will reward
- 6:51them accordingly, although, seemingly simple on the surface,
- 6:55the parable of the Good Samaritan, brilliantly answers,
- 6:57both of the lawyers, to questions with multiple layers
- 7:01of meaning. Christ shows that obtaining
- 7:04eternal life isn't just about fostering a subjective feeling
- 7:07of Goodwill toward God, nor is it simply a matter of helping
- 7:11injured, Travelers in dire circumstances.
- 7:14Rather it is about filling our mortal lives with true
- 7:18neighborly christ-like, charity, as framed in the broader
- 7:21perspective of the Plan of Salvation.
- 7:23And to that end, the parable offers a beautiful synopsis of
- 7:27the entire plan of our fallen and wounded state of Christ.
- 7:32Merciful desire and ability to heal and of the church's role in
- 7:36nurturing. Our souls in preparation for
- 7:39Christ's return, according to Elder, Neil L Andersen.
- 7:43The savior is our Good Samaritan sent to heal the brokenhearted.
- 7:48He comes to us when others passes by with compassion, he
- 7:52places his healing balm on our wounds and binds them up.
- 7:56He carries us, he cares for us. He bids us.
- 8:01Come unto me and I shall heal. You look forward.
- 8:05Your troubles and Sorrows are very real but they will not last
- 8:09forever. Your dark night will pass
- 8:11because the sun did rise with healing in his wings.
- 8:16One of the most beautiful aspects of the Plan of Salvation
- 8:19is the ability. We have to work with Christ for
- 8:22the Salvation of others, just as he works endlessly for us.
- 8:27When understood in this way, we like the Good Samaritan, each
- 8:31have a responsibility to care for lost and wounded Souls that
- 8:35come across our path during our mortal Journey at one level,
- 8:39right? John and Jenni Welch people can
- 8:42and should see themselves as Good Samaritans acting as
- 8:46physical Rescuers. And as saviors on Mount Zion
- 8:49personally and directly aiding in the rescue of lost souls and
- 8:53all people in need. By doing as the Samaritan.
- 8:57We join with the savior in helping to bring to pass the
- 9:00salvation and eternal life of mankind just as we may be Good,
- 9:05Samaritans for others. Disciples will also want to
- 9:08think of themselves as innkeeper's who have been
- 9:11commissioned by, Jesus Christ to minister to those in need and to
- 9:15facilitate institutionally the long term spiritual recovery of
- 9:19life's injured, Travelers. In the recent words of Elder
- 9:23Garrett, W Kong brothers and sisters.
- 9:26May we each warmly welcome all to his in where plenty of room
- 9:31is always to be found. Thank you for listening to this
