- 0:03Welcome back to the big life podcast it's week eight and jayden and i are experiencing
- 0:08this part of the season at very different places i'm currently playing and jayden
- 0:12has been navigating an injury,
- 0:14dude not funny but instead of doing the same game recap we always do we're going
- 0:18to talk about what a week in college soccer looks like when you're playing and
- 0:21when you're working towards getting back and then we're going to be bringing
- 0:24on page's teammate melina rembimbas
- 0:27we'll talk about her time at UNC, her move to Alabama, navigating injuries,
- 0:31her experiences within the U.S.
- 0:32National team, and what might come next with her. So do you want to start with
- 0:36our roseblood thorn, and then we can go into the college week?
- 0:39Let's do the thorn myself, bro.
- 0:44I might want to do the thorn. Why? I'm just like, I don't know.
- 0:48I just keep bringing myself down during games and like kind of hiding,
- 0:53and I feel like that's a thorn, but it's not because of anyone else it's just
- 0:56like it's something I can control and I just haven't been controlling it
- 1:00I would say a rose is I've gotten 90s on all three of my exams nice that's good my bud
- 1:08is our ranking it keeps going we are four right nice,
- 1:11okay my rose.
- 1:14I can play limited minutes so that's pretty cool I can play around 15 that's
- 1:22all I'm cleared to play though right now My thorn is that I have freaking rehab.
- 1:27And thorn is that I can play soon and I can help my teen out.
- 1:32One word to describe your week.
- 1:35This is the first word that came to mind. This is the first word.
- 1:37Okay, go. Chad Maxick. Yes.
- 1:41Oh, no one knows what that is. That was such a Gen Z turk.
- 1:45Basically, I've been really lazy. And we also like, we were on an away trip
- 1:50for five days. So I would generally play soccer, eat food and lay in my hotel bed.
- 1:55The first word that came to my mind was fun, even though we lost two games. I had fun.
- 2:00Me and my friend Allie, we were exploring. We were going everywhere.
- 2:04We rented like scooters and we were just touring because we're at Ohio and Penn
- 2:07State. So like we were just everywhere, like literally everywhere.
- 2:10We were in, like, right outside downtown Ohio or Columbus.
- 2:13Okay, what's been taking the most energy out of you?
- 2:16Probably traveling, actually. That has been taking the most energy.
- 2:20That is part of this. But, like, we...
- 2:24We chartered to, who do we play first? A&M.
- 2:28And then we took a five-hour bus ride to OU. That was miserable.
- 2:34Loki's same. But we had our charter back from Penn State, and it was nice because
- 2:38literally everyone had their own row. And I just slept and played Sudoku.
- 2:41And the flight attendants were so chill. We just had to lock in for takeoff
- 2:46and landing. But then after that, you could just lay down and do nothing.
- 2:49And everybody was vibing on the plane. But definitely the bus from Ohio to Penn
- 2:53State was slow-key horror. It was literally super cool.
- 2:57Playing. Yeah. Well, I went to training one day, and I had no shin guards in,
- 3:02and I had my earrings in. Which, if I'm on reserves, you don't have to do that.
- 3:06I just go and do my rehab over in the corner. No one cares about me.
- 3:10But then my trainer was like, you can try that.
- 3:12You can do that, see how it feels. So I was going in, but I was scared the whole
- 3:15time because I didn't have my shin guards on.
- 3:17And our coach is like, you need shin guards, and you need your earrings.
- 3:19Like everything's you like you're ready to play so like i was not tape nothing
- 3:23like whatever and then i went in and i was like oh okay i'm still cooking like
- 3:26so whatever but obviously it's different like you still have to get used to speed play but but,
- 3:32that's my win was actually integrating back which is nice and i'm still dude
- 3:36it's i don't know what's wrong with me but i still am getting frustrated with
- 3:38the fact that i cannot play like but i'm happy that i can play so i'm trying
- 3:42to take a little win but yeah.
- 3:45We do play quality soccer we just the issue with my team is We cannot score.
- 3:49We don't create chances.
- 3:50So obviously, given a good team you're playing against, they're going to punish
- 3:53you. Like, that's just how it goes.
- 3:55And that's literally the definition of our season. It's like,
- 3:57we do play quality soccer, so it's hard to, when you're in the game, it's like frustrating.
- 4:01But from the outside, it's like, well, we don't create anything.
- 4:03You're watching, like, I'm not dissing on no one on either any team.
- 4:08Just, there's no, like, desire to, like, kill a team. Like, other teams have
- 4:14that, and we just don't have that out there. So, like, I guess that's all I
- 4:18really noticed is, like.
- 4:20We don't create at all. Like when I am in, I definitely feel like I do a little
- 4:25more because that's my specialty, which is just attacking, like never not defending.
- 4:30So like, it's definitely like different watching my team up.
- 4:33Struggle with things that I know I could help at. Okay, wait.
- 4:37How do you stay connected to the team when your routine looks different for everyone else?
- 4:42I mean, I feel like everyone has like a different routine, I feel like,
- 4:45but our team culture is just so good.
- 4:48I feel like even if I'm doing something different throughout the day,
- 4:51like I am the last person in the locker room almost every day just because I
- 4:57don't really, I just like to show up and then be ready to go.
- 5:00Like I don't like to be sitting in the locker room waiting, you know,
- 5:04chatting. I just get there and I'm like, all right, let's go.
- 5:06But I feel like it doesn't really matter if I do that because we're still like
- 5:10a team and we're still going to play together. Yeah, you're nice.
- 5:14Okay, what's something you noticed
- 5:16about Alabama's play this week that you couldn't fully see in the moment?
- 5:20I would say like you talk about with your team how there's not really like a
- 5:25drive to like score or whatever.
- 5:28I feel like my team, we have, like, a drive to win. Like, I don't know how to
- 5:33explain it. Like, even when we played Texas A&M, like, we didn't really play that well that game.
- 5:39But we still managed to get a goal. Even when they had all the momentum and
- 5:43everything, like, we just wanted to win more.
- 5:47And, I mean, we have 11 wins right now and one loss. So, like,
- 5:52we've found our ways to score. We've found our ways to win games that have been hard.
- 5:56And I feel like sometimes, like, I don't really see that. But as I was on,
- 6:01like, the sideline, I could see, like, I was on the sideline on some of the
- 6:04goals that were scored. And I was like, wow, like, we want to score.
- 6:07We want to win. Yeah, that's true.
- 6:10And that speaks to why you guys have won so many games. Yes,
- 6:13that is true. I saw that stat that one of your coaches posted.
- 6:17Yeah. Most NCAA wins or whatever. Yeah, because I don't think I've played 12 games.
- 6:24Talk about kind of like, you know, what is like a good day been looking like since you've been hurt?
- 6:30Since more recently, we got him back, back to campus, because obviously,
- 6:34I get hurt. I don't know if I'm
- 6:35going to travel. They end up traveling everyone, so I did make the list.
- 6:38But a good day for me would probably wake up being productive,
- 6:42like productive as hell.
- 6:44Like recently, I've been getting up really early. I've been trying to stay on
- 6:47East Coast time so that I go to sleep really early, wake up really early.
- 6:51Then I'd be like lift done early in the morning, going to film training,
- 6:55whatever team issued stuff.
- 6:56And then I would do rehab while team lifts so that I'm still making like time
- 7:00and then class. But low-key is just like making sure I push everything out that
- 7:05I have in my rehab because that's literally all I could do.
- 7:08Like before I was able to train, all I could do was rehab and like every day
- 7:13I would honestly cry because like I'm just frustrated with the fact that it's.
- 7:16Like conference started and I got injured.
- 7:18Like out of my look, like that would only happen to me.
- 7:21So a good day is like just pushing myself in things that I don't,
- 7:26like to do which is rehab and lift and being happy when I'm sad so okay what
- 7:32part of your game feels like it's growing right now even if it isn't showing
- 7:36up in your stats because it's hard to get stats especially as a six so
- 7:40I feel like something that's growing is is how much I'm on our team we're very
- 7:46we're we go direct and then we possess the ball,
- 7:49I wouldn't say like we're like a clear direct team or a clear possession team
- 7:52we're like kind of in the middle,
- 7:54I want to get on the ball more I need to get on the ball more and I feel like
- 7:58I'm just trying to figure out ways that I can and control it myself and it still
- 8:03is taking time but I feel like.
- 8:07I am doing better at it in practices and I'm really working towards that hopefully
- 8:11in our next game against Ole Miss on Friday like I'll be able to be on the ball
- 8:15more and be more effective but you can't really see that in the stats,
- 8:19yeah like touches and stuff it's not it does not take on it,
- 8:23yeah well next we have my teammate Melina coming in.
- 8:27Okay, now we're bringing on someone I get to see every day, my Alabama teammate, Melina Rabimbis.
- 8:33Melina is a senior who started her college career at UNC before coming to Bama,
- 8:38and she's also been involved in the U.S.
- 8:40Youth National Team, including the U-17 World Cup roster and some U-20 training
- 8:46camps. Melina, thank you for coming on. Thank you for having me. I'm so excited.
- 8:50Okay, to start off, I heard you transferred from North Carolina,
- 8:53So what made you choose North Carolina originally and what were you expecting
- 8:57the college soccer to be like?
- 8:59Yeah, so originally I chose North Carolina because obviously the history,
- 9:03everything is just so awesome. You go on campus and you get to just see so many
- 9:08different unbelievable past players playing through that program.
- 9:12And you're just like, I want to be that.
- 9:14So when you go on a visit and you see all those faces in the locker room just
- 9:18kind of hanging around campus, you're like, holy cow, this is something I could definitely be a part of.
- 9:22And it's a once in a lifetime opportunity so getting to do that was definitely
- 9:26really cool extremely grateful for my time there,
- 9:29what I expected college soccer to be like was definitely not what it was I think
- 9:32everyone tries to prepare you and it's like it's so much faster like you're
- 9:37not going to be ready for it and you don't really know until you're in it
- 9:40and you don't actually know how fast it is until you're in it luckily enough I got to
- 9:45start in the ACC and then come to the SEC.
- 9:47So I had a little bit of a buffer, but so it was definitely,
- 9:51the SEC was definitely a little bit more tactical.
- 9:54I just got to use a lot more of my technical skills. And then coming over to
- 9:57the SEC was definitely a good prep for that.
- 10:00I had the absolute time of my life. I mean, I think getting to play,
- 10:04live out my dream of playing college soccer, an unbelievable program at an unbelievable
- 10:07school was definitely an experience I always cherish.
- 10:10Definitely like the speed of play, like you could not prepare for it.
- 10:15I mean, you know, you live and you learn, right?
- 10:17You get figured out. Yeah. What did you learn while you were there?
- 10:20Like about soccer and like about yourself?
- 10:23I think I went through a lot more self-growth my freshman fall being there.
- 10:28I had a lot of great role models that were seniors when I was a freshman who
- 10:31just kind of showed me what I wanted to become and how I could get there.
- 10:36So I think being able to learn from them, to take from them,
- 10:39and also my coaching staff obviously get to learn a lot from Anson's experiences and Damon's as well.
- 10:45I think that's probably what I took away the most. Their experiences,
- 10:47how I can apply them to my life on and off the field, I think is what I took away the most.
- 10:52And also the relationships. I think I've met a lot of really cool people that
- 10:56I still keep in contact with just like for life things that you never know when
- 10:59you may need them and you never know when they can update you on their lives
- 11:03or when you can update them on your lives.
- 11:05And just to share that experience because we did go through a lot that year
- 11:09there. So I think that's something that I always take away.
- 11:12Yeah. When did you start like with those awesome like experiences that you had there?
- 11:16When did you start experiencing or like feeling like you needed change or like
- 11:20there was a you needed to change schools I think towards the end of the year
- 11:24I think I was just looking at my future and what,
- 11:27I wanted myself to kind of experience on and off the field I think on the field
- 11:32they had every tool I needed to become what I wanted to become but I kind of
- 11:36wanted that off the field experience as well in a sense of being able to grow as a person
- 11:41and a player at the same time I just felt like I wasn't really going to get that there.
- 11:44Towards the end of the year when I just did a lot of self-reflecting on how
- 11:47I wanted to grow and who I wanted to become.
- 11:51I think me and my parents kind of decided that it wasn't the place for me to
- 11:55be able to grow off the field.
- 11:58In the speech world because that's what I want to do post-soccer and just kind
- 12:03of like in life spiritually and like friendship wise besides soccer.
- 12:08When you were looking for your next school then is that like some of the factors
- 12:11that you put into your decision and like what made Alabama specifically the right fit?
- 12:18Yeah so that's actually a question I did ask. How do your players grow off the
- 12:22field when I went to the portal?
- 12:24Obviously everyone's going to give this similar or the same spiel about on the field.
- 12:28We're all going to work hard. We're all going to help develop you.
- 12:31We're all going to do all these things.
- 12:33Like every coach is going to say the same thing because they want to help you.
- 12:36So my big question was always, what do you do to help your players off the fields?
- 12:40Whether that was film, self-development, psychology related,
- 12:44sports psych related, like mental health, things like that.
- 12:47You could really tell what a program values. And I got the chance to talk to Wes pretty early on.
- 12:55And I just was like, hey, what do you want to know? Like kind of I opened up
- 12:59the floor for him to kind of ask me questions first. And he was the only one
- 13:02that asked me what I like to do off the field.
- 13:05And at that point, like that was literally what I was looking for,
- 13:08everything off the field.
- 13:09And with the combination of everything that he had to offer on the field,
- 13:13with our support staff, with his coaching staff, the combination of those,
- 13:18I think, was just the perfect fit for me.
- 13:21Also, a lot of people talk about the vibe, the feeling that you get when you
- 13:24step onto a college campus.
- 13:26And if you've never had that feeling, you wouldn't think it exists.
- 13:32And I literally was like, okay, it's not real. That feeling doesn't actually
- 13:36happen. and then I came on to campus and I was like, oh my gosh,
- 13:39this is what everyone was talking about.
- 13:41Like I got the feeling, I got the vibe. I just knew that I was supposed to be
- 13:44here. I didn't know what for, I didn't know why, but I knew that there was something
- 13:49telling me to come here and that I was going to be able to make an impact.
- 13:53Nice. Yeah. I also agree. Your coach is very like, he was a nice guy.
- 13:59But for listeners who haven't been through it, what was the transfer process
- 14:02like from your perspective so.
- 14:05I decided to enter the portal after my season was over so after we had lost
- 14:09i had no idea what i wanted so i talked to everybody i'm talking like i talked
- 14:14to schools close to home so much california i talked down south like i talked
- 14:19to in-state schools in north carolina,
- 14:21and i just like did not know what i wanted at all process is pretty much you
- 14:25enter and then as soon as you enter,
- 14:28and you like click you can contact me they normally email you and say Hey, we're interested.
- 14:33Do you either have a highlight tape or can we talk to you?
- 14:36I was lucky enough where I they no one really asked you for a highlight tape
- 14:40They just said hey, can we get on the phone?
- 14:42So I just scheduled a bunch of calls Literally kid, you know,
- 14:45I was if I wasn't in class I was on the phone with like different coaches just
- 14:49trying to figure out what the heck I wanted That's when nil started getting
- 14:52big and coaches were like, hey, is that important to you?
- 14:54Because we haven't figured that out yet and I was like no tbh.
- 14:57I just want to love soccer and,
- 14:59And I just want to grow off the field. So those are my two things.
- 15:01I want to fall in love with soccer again. And I want to grow off the field.
- 15:05Moving into the next thing, we're going to talk about like kind of some injuries
- 15:08you've had and how you've had to navigate like returning to play.
- 15:12What injuries have you had and like when? What part of that experience do you
- 15:17think that people watching games don't kind of get to see?
- 15:21My first practice here in Alabama, I got hurt. I tore my ab off the bone.
- 15:26All my injuries were overuse injuries. let's keep that in mind so the first
- 15:29time I tore my ab I just tore like there's different layers to your ab I tore
- 15:33the sheet that's the most like the one that's in the front so like the thing
- 15:37that connects everything was the thing that I tore first,
- 15:40then I also got hip surgery in March of 2024 so I was out basically from January 5th until,
- 15:50September 1st was when I played in my first game and then at the end of my sophomore
- 15:56year I found out my other hip was torn,
- 16:00so I rehabbed that and then I didn't get surgery on I just did rehab and I was
- 16:03fine this past spring I at some point in the fall season in the winter I managed
- 16:11to tear my ab off the bone like my lower most,
- 16:15off it it was not attached anymore.
- 16:17So what do people not know about that injury when I play? Your abs are everything.
- 16:24I legitimately could not take a deep breath. I could not use the bathroom.
- 16:28I couldn't talk and walk. It was so painful.
- 16:32So I spent all spring rehabbing that. And now I think I wouldn't change a singular
- 16:37thing. I think I was meant to be able to take time away from.
- 16:42Soccer in the spring to just figure out who I wanted to be what I thought was
- 16:46important in my life so going back to the self-growth and all that that I could
- 16:49do off the field at a program like this things like that I think I wish people
- 16:53kind of knew and that there was like more,
- 16:56awareness and also the rehab process like nobody really knows how to rehab an
- 16:59app in a female I was literally gonna ask it's the hardest like what was the
- 17:04hardest part like the physical rehab or like was it also,
- 17:07the fact that you just couldn't play like you transferred and then I would say
- 17:11the first time the hardest part was not being able to even practice with my
- 17:14new team ever and being hurt I said I would definitely think that was the hardest part,
- 17:19the second time I would say It's rehabbing the same thing twice.
- 17:24And then not really knowing how to advocate for such an interesting injury that
- 17:29there isn't a lot of research on.
- 17:31I, luckily enough, met someone over the summer that's close.
- 17:35Or I know her a little bit. But over the summer, I got to meet with her.
- 17:38And I basically had to do C-section therapy, PT, like I had had to.
- 17:43How has going through injury changed how you kind of approach trainings now
- 17:48in recovery? What do you consider a good day?
- 17:52I would say I have a lot of good days. I think this is being able to like say
- 17:55I'm everything in my body is kind of fully healthy
- 17:58again as healthy as it can be is really satisfying to like feel and to experience
- 18:03or just to be able to say honestly I get to focus more on joy and being extremely present
- 18:10with me being hurt a lot of my college career like in season this is the first
- 18:14time where I really haven't been I get to do what I love after it's been taken
- 18:19away from me twice now like.
- 18:22I don't think there's many people get to say that and get to experience that.
- 18:25So my focus a lot has been on just being super joyful and how can I spread joy.
- 18:30And obviously there's a lot of pressure. I'm a senior. What's coming next?
- 18:34I don't know. But I think because I've been through those things,
- 18:37I don't necessarily feel that pressure because I'm so confident and content
- 18:41in who I am and what I want to be that I get to just focus on how I can spread
- 18:47joy and help my teammates.
- 18:48And I think that's That's the best thing about where I am right now.
- 18:51Yeah, especially with a lot of our pros going to the World Cup for the U20s,
- 18:56I want to take it back to your U.S.
- 18:57National team, youth national team experiences. So take us back to the first
- 19:02time you got involved with the U.S., the national team, and what do you remember about that feeling?
- 19:07Yeah, so I'd actually been called up my whole life, all that I can remember,
- 19:11starting at literally the little baby age when you don't know the difference
- 19:14between your right foot and your left foot.
- 19:16It's literally that I was really lucky enough to get to experience kind of the
- 19:21different ebbs and flows U.S. soccer's had.
- 19:23When you get to the U-17 level, knowing that there's a little bit more something
- 19:26on the line, there's a team on the line, there's an event on the line.
- 19:30It's a little different. I got really lucky. I had a great coach. I had a great team.
- 19:35We were as successful as we were because of the environment we created and how close we were.
- 19:41It was right after covid so we like were speed speed dating pretty much to figure
- 19:46out who we were putting on this team before like world cup qualifying and like
- 19:51that was all within the same year just trying to figure it out and.
- 19:55I like vividly remember i would be
- 19:58at a camp for like 10 days seven to 10 days and i would have like four to six
- 20:02weeks off and i'd be at another one like we were rapid firing these camps just
- 20:07because like we needed to figure it out but i had so much fun and I like truly that's
- 20:12just a testament to who our coach was and just what she prioritized
- 20:16like I enjoyed going to camps and I enjoyed playing,
- 20:21yeah well we've seen that you've been in with the U20 training camps in 2025
- 20:25so what is different about going into national team environment now compared
- 20:29to when you were younger I would say now at least in my camp experiences it was,
- 20:35you were all in the club environment before and you pretty much got to control
- 20:40the narrative you controlled how you did how you played when you were in your
- 20:43club level and then when you would come to,
- 20:47college like you then have to play in these different styles and then when you
- 20:51come together you have so many different styles and I think that's the hardest part
- 20:56of all of us being in college moving on to kind of like now where you're at
- 21:00like it's senior year like it's your last year unless you decide to take a fifth year but like,
- 21:06being a senior like and being healthy like how does this season feel different
- 21:10for you and obviously we're doing pretty well too so yeah doing pretty damn good,
- 21:14I think it feels different in the sense that I think we're having so much fun.
- 21:17I think if you were to look at our locker room, I think if you were to look
- 21:20at our bench, you would have no idea how good we are. And I don't even think
- 21:23we scratched the surface on how good we can be.
- 21:25I think the closest we've gotten was this weekend on Sunday.
- 21:29I think that's the closest we've been all year to like really being ourselves.
- 21:32And I just think that's so exciting because a lot of people say like their biggest
- 21:36fear is like failing. But I genuinely think our team's biggest fear is how good we can be.
- 21:42And I think that is so big to have that. So I think that's been the biggest change this year.
- 21:48When you think about your whole college journey, what are you most proud of
- 21:51that has nothing to do with stats? No goals, no assists. Like, what are you?
- 21:55I think I'm most proud creating the culture in our locker room.
- 21:59If I remove myself and I look at the way our team is, it's a bigger version of me and how I am.
- 22:06Last thing to wrap it up, like, after you're done with this year, like,
- 22:11do you want to go professional like do you want to have a fifth year like grad
- 22:15school like what like what is after look like if you have any idea at all it's
- 22:20a million dollar question i would love to i would love to go pro i would love
- 22:24to live out my childhood dream of playing soccer,
- 22:27and just kind of just showcase myself on a different platform and get to like
- 22:31grow my platform i think would be the coolest thing but also at the same time
- 22:36like there's no pressure on it.
- 22:37If that's not what God has in store for me, I'm okay with it.
- 22:41I'm so content with going to get my master's and being a speech therapist too.
- 22:45I think I'm at the utmost peace knowing that it's out of my control and that
- 22:50I can only control what I can control. It's my effort, my energy, and my energy.
- 22:54That's all I can do. Hey, nice. If you could tell a freshman year Molina one
- 22:59thing, what would you tell her?
- 23:02I wouldn't change a thing, but I would probably tell her to stay the course,
- 23:06and to not give up on herself and to not be afraid of herself
- 23:11because I think I put a lot of pressure on what I wanted to be
- 23:15and what I could be instead of just understanding that it was about the everyday
- 23:20the little things every day it was about the people that I got to talk to the
- 23:23things that I got to do and
- 23:25the people I got in impact it wasn't about the stats the goals the minutes it's
- 23:29never about that well thank you so much for being honest with us and sharing
- 23:33your kind of experience and journey um it's been really cool to hear like
- 23:38some things I probably wouldn't have asked you like as a teammate but like thank
